Arda Turan: Confrontation (2024) Movie Script
[sportscaster] A name Turkish football is
about to present to the European stage.
In the coming years,
we hope to see him in even better places.
Arda is a true star.
[Arda] If it's about football, I believe
in myself more than anything else.
[fans] Arda Turan, hooray!
Arda Turan, hooray!
[sportscaster] Arda shoots and goal.
Arda is celebrating his goal!
He was a very intelligent player,
and understood what effort was required
10 ARDA T.
MINUTE 21
He's our most experienced player.
He always liked to say,
"Oh, I'm the best player ever."
It's Arda's style.
You have to accept him how he is.
When he arrived, I said this.
I will receive a lot of the ball.
[sportscaster] And Arda Turan...
He was once a famous football player.
[reporter]
Arda Turan was called in for questioning.
Arda made huge mistakes.
Arda Turan's career was ending.
[reporter]
Arda lost 11 million euros in value.
This is when
it will start to go backwards.
[Melih endil] It's a protest
between Arda and the fans.
There's an electricity, a tension.
It was difficult to understand
the reaction shown by his countrymen.
When unexpected things come from those
you regard as you own children.
This is really hard.
[reporter] Arda Turan was expelled
from the national team camp
due to verbal and physical assault.
I will hold each of them accountable.
When interests clash,
people show their true colours.
He goes in recklessly.
It was impossible to stop him.
He's armed and he starts shooting.
[sportscaster]
The last intervention is from Arda.
This is the first time
I'm talking about this, by the way.
[interviewer] Do you regret it?
ARDA TURAN CONFRONTATION
[Asil] Is it this way?
Let's try this way.
Yes, like this. Are they balancing?
They won't.
Let's put it like this.
You said we were gonna be on TV.
[Arda] Wow, look, Icardi scored.
- [Asil] Goal!
- [Arda] Goal!
- Did Galatasaray score five goals?
- [Arda] Yes. It is six now.
- Who scored the goals?
- [Arda] Six plus two?
[Asil] Six plus two.
- [Aslihan] Mathematics?
- Yes.
- Six plus two?
- [Arda growls]
- Look, the Lion King is here.
- [kids chatter]
- Bravo, Asil. Bravo.
- [Asil] It's a goal!
- Catch it!
- [Asil] Now, this is a goal.
Come on. Come on. Come on!
- [Arda] You can't get the ball.
- [Asil] Hey. Come on.
[Arda] I had a great childhood.
People used to park their cars
on one side of the road
and the other side
was left for pedestrians.
Kids used to play football all day long,
with only one post
and they used to have uniforms made
and started a neighbourhood squad.
That kind of wonderful place
was Bayrampaa.
BAYRAMPASA
This is where I've played football
most in my life.
We call it the lower neighbourhood.
When asked we said
we were in the lower neighbourhood.
I played football here
more than anywhere else.
This post right here,
this was a goal post.
You can still see the socket.
It was that old school, kind of thing.
There was a small house
with a garden and wall.
The other goal post was there,
between that car and the three next to it.
We were playing four by four,
five by five matches.
Goal! Goal!
[Yksel] He was a football enthusiast.
Even inside our house,
he was playing football.
He loved football a lot and was watching,
following it closely.
ARDA TURAN'S MOTHER
Of course, we didn't believe that much.
We supported him, we helped him.
[Adnan] "Son," I said, "If you read, I'll
let you play ball. If you don't, I won't."
ARDA TURAN'S FATHER
He said "OK, Dad. I'll go to school.
I'm going to go and I'll play."
In the past, when a football
hit these bars, they would shudder.
Mrs. Remziye would yell at us,
rightfully so, to avoid hitting the bars.
To stop the bars from trembling we used
to get under and hold on like this.
We were small,
so we would easily fit down there.
- Mrs. Remziye, how are you doing?
- I'm good. How are you?
I was just talking about you.
- Remember how we hit your bars?
- That was some noise.
- How are you, son?
- How are you?
- I'm fine. I just arrived.
- Welcome.
[Adnan] They play 11-11.
Wall pass, pass through the walls
of houses. Fights every day.
One day, he came in with broken glasses.
One day, he'd come in
having forgotten his glasses.
One day, the mums of friends would come.
One day, they threw glass at Arda's head.
He still has a scar,
a glass mark on his neck.
I wouldn't say I was angry.
I was a happy child,
but not without anger.
When there was a fight, I fought.
Because back then,
violence was the way to go.
What should I do?
There's a fight in the street.
If there was a fight, we'd fight.
ALTINTEPS SPORTS CLUB
[Arda]
We had three tea houses on our street.
The third one was the meeting place
for the Altntepsi Sports club.
Every afternoon, they had a break.
Everyone watched the games.
Everyone would come out to watch us,
to see us play.
While I was playing
for the Altntepsi youth squad,
lker Akba, Fatih Yayla's coach,
saw me play.
We had a little chat.
He gave me a card and asked me
which club I'd like to play for.
I said I was a Galatasaray fan.
He gave me his card
and I went to Galatasaray youth team.
I needed a consent letter,
but my parents just looked at each other,
because we had no money.
To get a letter of consent, and a medical
report, you had to spend of money.
Now I'll show you the field
where my life changed.
- I even remember where I was standing.
- You were standing right there.
[Yksel] Arda's auditioned.
They said, "Come on, we're trying out."
Everyone came and said, "Number six won.
Number six won."
I was so excited, I felt so bad.
I hugged that gentleman like this.
"He's my son. He's my son."
The late Ahmet Keskinkl came to me.
I'll never forget it.
His voice was just as low.
"Where are you from?" he said.
I said, "I'm from Bayrampaa."
He laughed, "No footballers come
from Bayrampaa."
- [man 1] Over here!
- [man 2] Go deep!
[fans chant] You're yellow and red...
[Arda] I enjoyed being a ball boy
as much as playing.
I was in love with Ali Sami Yen,
the old Ali Sami Yen.
I was in love with the compositions sung.
You're yellow and red
The star of our heart
You're yellow and red
The star of our heart
Be champion, Cimborn, take our lives
Later, transitioning from
ball boy to football player,
I always valued
wearing the Galatasaray jersey.
DIRECTOR OF GALATASARAY SPORTING CLUB ACADEMY
He was very talented and gifted
even at that age.
And his talent was beyond his years.
[Mehmet Demirkol] Arda had a physical
disadvantage in the lower age groups.
But he took it and turned it into
an advantage. He grew taller.
JOURANALISWhen you look at Arda's physiognomy,
legs are short. Buttocks are wide.
He's got a distinctive look. Could you
make a good footballer out of him or not?
He used all these physical disadvantages
to his advantage.
An extraordinary balance.
Keeping the ball
while using his hips well.
So the U21 squad,
which is just below the main squad.
The youth squad is below that.
We were playing for the 14-16.
So, we were three levels below the main
squad in terms of age groups.
Fatih Terim watched us play and invited
four of us to train with the main squad.
I was excited when I saw the Galatasaray
squad that won the UEFA Cup.
It was one of the best five days
of my life,
the day I first trained
with the Galatasaray A team.
There is a fence in Florya.
It's deliberately built.
May the youngsters aspire to come here,
work hard, and earn the jersey here.
From here, you could see a part of
the training ground from the side lines.
It was so magical.
It's just a simple fence, but crossing
from here to there can feel like
ten years, almost a lifetime.
[sportscaster] Arda, wall pass with
Zelenka, it's with Arda again.
Arda shoots and goal!
That age group, yes,
they all got promoted to the A team
and started training with them.
ASSISTANT MANAGER, EYPSPOR
But many were later loaned out,
as is common with many young players.
When he was sent to Manisa
from Galatasaray,
he said, "Dad, I'm not going."
You feel like you're experiencing
a decline.
You feel bad about yourself.
But Manisa embraces me very well.
And it did me a lot of good.
I went from being Arda the youth player,
to Arda the footballer in Manisa.
[sportscaster] Arda crosses it.
Caner hits hard and the second goal!
[Adnan] There was a match
between Manisaspor and Fenerbahe.
A young chap called Arda plays at
right-back and he plays like a winger too.
And it was a match
in which he performed incredibly well.
"At the end of the season...
PRESIDENT, GALATASARAY SC
...get your bag and come to Florya.
Your five-year contract is ready."
Then he came
and signed his contract in blank.
And he started playing for Galatasaray.
THE RISE
[sportscaster] Arda, Arda, Arda,
the goal is empty. Goal and goal.
Galatasaray extends the lead
to four with Arda.
[cheering of crowd]
Magnificent goals from Arda.
We had a game against Mlad Boleslav.
Eric Gerets was looking for a left winger.
He tried me
during one part of the training.
I did well in that limited time.
I scored and set up goals etc.
Galatasaray would earn 15 million euros
if they joined the Champions League.
I was thinking I was a big risk
for a coach
to use a young player in that situation.
But Gerets called me into his office
and told me he would play me.
[sportscaster] And Galatasaray begins
the match. Good luck, Galatasaray!
Pass, back, back to Orhan.
Orhan was about to pass it to me
when it bounced off the grass.
The ball came from the air like this.
Towards my chest.
There's a right-back behind me.
He's over 6'2".
I'm leaning on him. He's coming
to double-team in front of me.
I'm leaning on him. When the ball comes
in, I pop out of the way with my chest.
I get out of the way and start dribbling.
I'll never forget,
Ali Sami Yen went like, "Ooh"!
That was the sound.
That moment in my life,
my football career began.
[sportscaster] Orhan.
Arda, Arda, the goal is empty.
Goal and goal.
And goal, and goal, it's two now.
Arda. He's got the ball.
Inside the penalty area.
- Arda! Here comes the perfect goal.
- [cheering]
Arda! Arda!
Young Arda scores his second
and his team's fourth goal.
- [fan] Turan!
- [crowd] Arda!
- [fan] Turan!
- [crowd] Arda!
- [fan] Turan!
- [crowd] Arda!
[Arda] I was the talk of the country.
And a lot of prophecies about my future
as a footballer started.
He'll be spoiled. He'll be spoiled,
then nothing will happen.
He'll be spoiled, then a great player.
That's what a great player needs.
[sportscaster] Ayhan plays it back,
open position.
Arda in position, shoots, and it's a goal.
Arda's goal and Galatasaray..."
[Arda] It was a period when we felt very
strong in the old Ali Sami Yen stadium.
I had a fantastic season
from start to finish.
UNFORGETTABLE GOALS BY ARDA
TURAN / 2007-2008
[sportscaster] And the 2007-2008 season
champion, dear viewers, is Galatasaray.
UEFA EURO 2008 - AUSTRIA-SWITZERLAND
[reporter] In 2008...
PORTUGAL-TRKYE
GROUP STAGE, GAME 1
Portugal was again our opponent
in the group stage.
Before the match, the coach had
already decided on the squad list,
and I wasn't included.
The coach always said, "The European
Champion is the player's reward."
[reporter] "We lost two-nil to Portugal
in our first match."
A player may be disappointed for
not playing, but trusting the coach
is something else entirely.
Faith Terim instils that trust in you.
Perhaps the tactical changes
he made in the Switzerland match
are changes the need to be analysed
in Turkish football,
lessons that should be taught.
[sportscaster] We're taking a free kick,
Arda hits the post, and the ball rebounds.
Arda is in the open...
I dribbled the ball towards the opponent's
area. It's already the 90+2 minutes.
When I look another touch,
I saw the goal right in front of me.
This is my transition from being an
important player to becoming a star.
[sportscaster] Trkiye wins.
[sportscaster] A name Turkish football is
about to present to the European stage.
Arda is a true star.
Hamit passes the ball
Arda hits the ball and goal!
- Goal! Goal! Goal!
- [cheering]
Arda scored and it's a goal.
Hamit brings the ball,
Arda hits and it's two-one now.
The National Team eliminated
the Czech Republic in a magnificent battle
and secured their place
in the top eight of Europe.
CROATIA-TRKIYE
QUARTER FINAL
[sportscaster] Modri crosses,
it's dangerous, goal position.
[Fatih Terim] We conceded a goal
one minute before the end.
Everyone naturally thinks
that the match and the adventure
in the European Championship
have come to an end.
However, the match went into penalties
in an extraordinary fashion.
I left my players alone for a minute.
After the referee's last whistle
before the penalties.
I said I'll do it. Coach looked at me
and said "You?" I said, "Yes, coach!"
[Fatih Terim]
He always played beyond his age.
He was always one step ahead.
I wasn't surprised
that he wanted to shoot the first penalty.
I went to the spot, lights flashing
everywhere and my cleat got stuck.
When my cleat got stuck,
I thought I couldn't hit properly.
I said, "Arda, do it old street style."
We need to face the reality
that Arda is not a good penalty kicker.
[sportscaster] Arda, come on!
Come on, Arda! Goal!
Arda! Goal! One-nil.
Terrible shot, but the best shot
is the one that ends in a goal.
We took the lead with it.
CROATIA 2 - TRKIYE 4
[sportscaster] It's unbelievable.
we're making the miracle happen.
Our national team
reached the semifinals in Euro 2008.
A simple yellow card in the Croatia match
and I'm out of the semifinals.
Maybe the match of my life.
I really wanted to play
in the Germany match.
Just imagine, one match left,
you became European champion.
You've beaten Germany.
It's done, one match.
In Vienna, at the Olympic Stadium,
you're going to play against Spain.
Anything can happen. Of course, Spain is
a very good team, but anything can happen.
[sportscaster] Millions are watching us,
and we expect good football
in this match as well.
Kazim...
- The ball hits the post, shoot and goal!
- [cheering]
Three players in the box. Rt!
The post is empty
and the ball is in the net.
When you talk about 2008,
people feel proud and recount the success.
But when you delve deeper into 2008,
it brings sadness.
Ask anyone who was involved in 2008,
Tamer, Tuncay.
There were many talented players,
but there was a family.
That was the most important point.
TURKISH NATIONAL SQUAD FOOTBALLER
Both the coach and his team,
and the players,
believed in and embraced each other.
We were this close to the finals.
But life's like this.
That tournament was a wonderful tournament
for Trkiye and for us.
Looking back today, it was one of the
most special teams I've been part of,
one of the happiest moments of my life.
Being with them,
experiencing this success with them,
and all the opportunities
they provided me, especially the coach.
It's not easy to entrust responsibility
to a 21-year-old player, to a kid.
But my teammates, the staff,
everyone treated me like a star
and took care of me
in the best possible way.
That's why the man sitting in front
of you today has a great story,
a significant contribution
from that tournament
- Go, go, go. Go to your father.
- Mom!
- I love you, Daddy. I love you.
- Daddy.
What's that over there?
I love you. I love you.
- Hi, baby. All right, bye.
- I don't think that...
- Bye! See you next time.
- [Arda laughs]
LET THIS DREAM GO ON.
DON'T WAKE ME UP."
The newspaper were there.
Arda opens it and sees himself.
CAPTAIN, TURKISH NATIONAL SQUAD
Arda sees himself all the time.
"Isn't it very good now? How do you feel?"
He said, "Abi, it's very good.
Everything is very good."
I said, "That's it.
This is the maximum a player can reach."
The praise you've received,
the love you've received.
After this, unfortunately,
it will go backwards.
That's what makes us unique.
We lived in front of the whole country.
ARDA TURAN IS FAST OFF THE FIELD AS WELL
Everything has been public for years.
[Funda] The gossip press especially
closely follows the social circle,
private life, family life, possessions,
Cars, watches and art
of successful and talented footballers.
JOURNALISHe has always attracted their interest
for this.
JOURNALISThe media's duty is to present Arda Turan
in all his aspects.
The media is not guilty
for presenting him.
The media exist for this purpose anyway.
Arda Turan knows
that he exists for the media as well.
What did we do when we encountered
a figure like Arda Turan?
We tried to benefit
from everything Arda Turan had,
from his flesh to his milk and wool.
[journalists call out] Arda.
[Fatih Terim]
I made him captain when he was 22.
Perhaps the youngest captain
of Galatasaray in the last 50 years.
He had a very good dialogue
with the other players.
He had a very good dialogue
with the staff.
And I mean, he knew football.
Being the captain of Galatasaray
and wearing the number 10 jersey
is a great honour for me.
I hope from now on, I will try to show
a more exemplary Arda for the team,
working harder than ever
to deserve this jersey and captaincy.
CAPTAIN, GALATASARAY SC
Take the captain's armband
and step onto the field.
It's a very different
because it's also requires leadership.
Someone who can carry that responsibility
and guide his teammates
in the right direction.
Who can establish good relationships
with the coach.
A man who can present well
on and off the field.
Everyone will remember Arda
as a good captain.
I think he made mistakes
from time to time.
I also think he made huge mistakes,
but he did a lot of right things too.
There is no balance for this.
[fans chant]
Take off the jerseys, play naked!
Take off the jerseys, play naked!
Take off the jerseys, play naked!
"ARDA COULDN'T MEETHE EXPECTATIONS."
"THEY DESTROYED ARDA TURAN."
ARDA DIDN'T HEED THE BAN.
HE GOT IN HIS CAR AND LEFT."
ARDA TURAN'S WIFE
A 22-year-old man has been made
the captain of Galatasaray.
He has a lot of weight on his shoulders.
But he wasn't given professional support,
psychological support.
To be captain of a big team, a big brand.
Trkiye's biggest football club,
its responsibility is greater.
Because every step you take,
it's like this.
Every step you take
receives positive or negative criticism.
THE BURDEN WAS TOO HEAVY.
"ARDA TURAN IS THE NEW TARGEAT GALATASARAY."
[sportscaster] Here is the moment
the fight broke out.
He says, "Be a man!"
He's telling him to behave.
Yes, here is Cristian Baroni and Arda.
The argument between
Captain Arda Turan and Caner Erkin
escalated suddenly into a fight.
Caner Erkin was seen with a bleeding lip.
[sportscaster] Nerves are very tense.
Just seven-eight months ago,
teammates who competed together
in the national team jersey
are now unfortunately punching each other.
I agree with people,
but if only they'd see it from my side.
They say I'm a spoiled.
They say I'm a lout.
But the criticism is too harsh.
ARDA DODGED PENALTY, AGAIN
ARDA'S ON THE RUN
I've had so many violent incidents.
I swear to God. I'm ashamed of myself.
I mean, because I was a kid, at the age
of 19, 20, 21, I have a big dreams.
And all those defeats, all those fights,
all those disappointments.
FENERBAHE-GALATASARAY
TURKISH SUPER LEAGUE 2008
[sportscaster]
Arda prepares to take a corner.
The dialogue he had with the assistant
referee. Arda is getting a yellow card.
Fenerbahe four - Galatasaray one.
I was very sad when we lost to Fenerbahe.
I had a bad week.
I switched off the lights...
Of course, with my youth
and the pressure on me,
it wore me out not beating
Fenerbahe for a long time.
It was destroying my psychology.
It's not a good week. I couldn't sleep.
[sportscaster] Arda is down on the ground,
signalling for a substitution.
He's lying outside the field of play,
waiting for medical staff.
Galatasaray are down to ten men.
[Arda]
I'll never forget the day I fell down.
I couldn't breathe. My heart was in
my mouth. In the ambulance and stuff.
I was very scared, I mean,
for upsetting the one I love.
I was admitted to an intensive care unit
because I fainted,
half conscious or something.
My mom came.
Of course, we felt so bad at that moment.
When I saw him there,
I suddenly regretted it and felt sorry.
I wished he wasn't a footballer.
I was a very good Galatasaray player.
Fenerbahe defeats used to ruin me.
I would pass out. I was so
ridiculously upset. So unnecessary.
At the end of the day, it's football.
You represent Galatasaray.
Sometimes like this.
You made a transfer offer to Arda.
I made a very sincere offer to Arda.
I offered him 15 million euros.
- When?
- In 2011
Mr. Aziz is very loyal
Fenerbahe supporter.
I am afraid if I leave him alone with Arda
for 15 to 20 minutes,
Mr. Aziz might become a Galatasaray
supporter, so I don't allow it.
Aziz Yldrm told Arda through an agent
$5 million a year, five years contract.
$25 million.
Arda got $1 million with us at the time.
I told Adnan Sezgin, "I need a copy
of Arda's contract. Bring it in.
Just leave the numbers blank."
I called Arda. I gave him the contract.
He came back and signed the bottom.
But there are no numbers or anything.
It's all blank.
I said, "Why are these empty?
I can't talk numbers. Where you are?"
He said, "I'll accept whatever you write."
So, I made that 1 million into 2 million.
I put the term at five years.
So, out of nowhere, I'm going to get
$5 million. We had to overpay.
Thank you, Aziz Yildirim.
As a result,
the idea of leaving Galatasaray
was never realistic in my heart and soul.
I thought that it would happen one day,
of course,
but the later it happens, the better.
A person does not want to leave
what they love.
Then, after a certain time,
Atltico Madrid made a serious offer.
ARDA TURAN'S AGENThey paid Arda the highest transfer fee
in Turkish history.
It wasn't a small amount.
Arda was injured.
Maybe if he wasn't injured and played,
he could have received more money.
Mr. President Adnan Polat said
he should leave it to the new management.
With the new management,
when coach Fatih arrives,
coach Fatih called me to his house.
I went there.
He said we were going to build a new team.
We'd be successful,
and we should keep going.
- [sportscaster] Ujfalui passes. Baro!
- [cheering]
We beat Liverpool three-nil.
We were on a roll.
We played really good football.
Our squad was ready. Our leader,
our captain was so on the field.
The coach wanted me to stay,
but the management needed money,
and at that time, 12-13 million euros
was a significant amount.
I said if there is a financial need,
I can go to Europe.
As soon as I said that,
very clear answer started coming.
Of course, Arda, you can go.
The reason for Arda's departure
was Galatasaray's financial difficulties
at the time.
It wasn't an easy decision
for him or for me.
It's as if there was a problem between us
and the coach when there was none.
The coach wants me to stay.
I want to play for Galatasaray.
But the conditions...
ARDA TURNED DOWN GALATASARAY'S OFFER
I mean, what should I do?
I've lost 3 million, 4 million euros.
But should I lose 5-6 million euros
in four years?
Do you want me to lose all the time?
Or how about my future?
How about my family?
ARDA TURAN'S BROTHER
He had to leave without immediately.
We didn't even have a moment to be sad,
to think about how much we'd miss him.
"Mummy, I'm going for you. Don't be sad."
I cried a lot there. He cried too.
He said he was going for us.
"I'm going for you. Don't cry after me."
THE STARDOM
[Miguel Angel Gil]
What did I think of Arda?
Arda's talent was the first thing
that caught my attention.
After that,
there was a period at Atltico,
we were experiencing
a significant leap in growth.
We needed talent, so we started evaluating
CEO, ATLTICO MADRID
the market in general
and players in that position.
All the coaches were in agreement
that he was a very good option for us,
and that was the reason for this transfer.
[Pedro Pablo] I helped him a lot. He
had a lot of problems, like the language.
But then
he immediately was ready for anything.
ASSISTANT MANAGER, ATLTICO MADRID
He gave you everything he had.
You borrowed his stuff.
As I adapted,
the team started adapting to me.
Clothes started to change.
Cars started to change.
We started going to restaurants together
and having fun together.
So suddenly, we became very good friends.
We became a very fun team.
I wanted to get to training every day.
I spent time in the changing room.
Playing backgammon with Felipe Luis.
Felipe and I had a great bond.
[Filipe] We always played, backgammon,
tavla, in the dressing room.
And I cannot say that...
ATLTICO MADRID PLAYER
...in the documentary,
but I always win.
And it's too bad
because he play a long time
and he's little short of, you know.
But he always like to say,
"Oh, I'm the best player and everything."
- Oh, Francisco. How are you doing?
- Very good.
We have many memories here, but first of
all, Sandro is a good Atltico Madrid fan,
where I was very happy when I entered
and became close friends with the staff,
where I liked the owner very much.
I love lahmacun.
It doesn't mean
that I won't eat risotto at Ten Con Ten
or duck at a Chinese restaurant.
But who doesn't like lahmacun? So these...
Here you are, sir.
One of the most beautiful risottos
in the world.
Yes. Thank you so much.
Please enjoy.
It's made with these noodles.
I mean, it's made with noodles
and it's entered the risotto world.
It's exclusive to Ten Con Ten.
It's my favourite thing. It's amazing.
You just said, "Coach, you were
bringing lahmacun from Bayrampaa."
Now you're asking the question...
Do you see the perception?
"Coach, we know how close you are
to world cuisines."
I answered the previous question.
Please broadcast this in the documentary.
Manzano was here when I first arrived.
He was very good coach. Maybe it was an
advantage for me to have Manzano first.
Because he was a naive person
with very good human relations
compared to Cholo Simeone.
It was good for me
to spend the first six months with him.
It made it easier for me
to get used to him.
Then, of course, I had to face the reality
of Simeone and Prof Ortega.
[Diego Simeone] And honestly, in the
first match we played against Malaga,
MANAGER, ATLTICO DE MADRID
I saw how high quality he was.
However, he didn't have much impact
in terms of game dynamics.
I thought he could improve
his game dynamics.
He had character. He had personality.
Despite being an intense footballer,
he didn't show it back then.
However, from there on,
he began to identify
with watch the coach and the team wanted.
And during that period, he became
one of the most important footballers
of this era, very intelligent.
[Mehmet Demirkol] He took advantage
of Arda's Spartan side.
Of course, he took advantage
of his talent.
But very talented players
go to very big clubs
and are left out
because they don't fit the system.
It's normal.
Arda was pressured on the one hand
to fit into the system,
on the other hand, he was released.
We have a tense relationship
because of a great love.
Because he pushed me
harder and harder every day.
He did everything every day
to make me a better actor.
He knew where to push my buttons.
But he also knows how to motivate me.
If I was a manager right now,
If I had a player like Arda Turan,
I couldn't use it the way Simeone used it.
Atltico Madrid, a team
that wasn't bothered by its position,
suddenly transform into a squad
that turned every match into a battle...
tightly knit through blood and struggle,
within a culture of fair play,
willing to engage in all aspects
of the game's ugliness and dirtiness,
and emphasizing the importance
of playing together until the end.
FC BARCELONA PLAYER,
CROATIAN NATIONAL SQUAD PLAYER
An amazing team, amazing individual
players like Arda,
but there was really a team.
You can feel that they defend together.
They attack together. They...
Yeah, they have a good atmosphere
in the team. You can feel that.
So I remember when we played against them,
it was feeling like... [exhales]
Again, you have to fight,
so it will be a fight.
[sportscaster] Atltico have beaten
their Spanish Liga rivals.
They are UEFA Europa League winners
once again.
Inspired by Falcao...
CHELSEA-ATLETICO MADRID
UEFA SUPER CUP FINAL 2012
[sportscaster] The Supercopa starts.
Arda Turan hits the ball.
It goes to Radamel, Radamel...
Goal!
Colchoneros will remember this.
If you have iPlus, don't delete this,
because it's a match fans will remember.
ATLETICO MADRID-REAL MADRID
COPA DEL REY FINAL 2013
[Arda] That was the game where
we proved that we can challenge them.
It's a turning point for my hair, too.
- [sportscaster] It's over!
- [cheering]
It's over!
Atltico de Madrid wins the Cup.
Today they flipped the match
after an early goal by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Diego Costa scored. Miranda scored.
Atltico de Madrid
is the champion of Copa del Rey.
[Arda] A fan asked me
if I would cut my hair.
I said I would if we won.
Immediately, Mario is immoral.
He's waiting with a machine.
I like. It's good.
Yeah!
[man] And tomorrow?
[Arda] Hey, let's go, Atltico!
- [footballer] Go for it! Go for it!
- [cheering]
[all yell happily]
[singing]
Arda Turan, Arda Turan, Arda Turan!
Arda Turan, Arda Turan, Arda Turan!
Atltico Madrid celebrates its
championships and success in this square.
What you see behind me is Neptune Square.
There's a walking area around here.
The names of all the players are read out
one by one. And finally, our captain.
He ties the scarf where you can see it
and finishes the celebration.
We used to come this way, so many people,
at the championships,
and the celebration we won.
You couldn't see anybody. When you
looked up, you couldn't see the ground.
The people were like ants.
It was unbelievable,
the Atltico Madrid songs, the flags.
People with their children and husbands
ran towards here when they saw us coming.
We came with 1 million people,
1.5 million people.
[cheering]
But the most important celebration of all
is the La Liga championship.
ATLTICO MADRID-MLAGA
[Okan Turan] We're at the Vicente Calderon
for the Malaga match.
We made a mistake and fell behind one-nil.
Something happened,
and we ended up drawing the match 1-1.
We needed to wait to become champions.
Losing the championship at the Vicente
Calderon felt like something unbearable.
You go there and if you lose,
you give the championship.
You go to Camp Nou and if you lose,
you don't win the championship.
They won't let you go.
They won't let you out.
[Arda] We started well, but in the early
minutes Costa pulled a hamstring.
He had to leave the game.
CAMP NOU CONSTRUCTION SITE
When there were three substitutions,
then, five or ten minutes later,
Fabregas' knee.
It hit the ligament above my pelvic bone
and tore it. I couldn't breathe at all.
I stopped breathing.
And then I looked,
it was stinging, I couldn't move.
I had to leave the game.
I left the game crying my eyes out.
Mister was also crying when I left,
and the guys in the dugout, Costa's too.
Because we had suffered so much
for the championship,
so much blood had been split.
It was a very hard day for us,
you know, for Barcelona,
because we were ahead in the game,
scoring one-nil.
I was on the bench for the match.
I was coming back from injury.
[sportscaster] There goes Gabi, second
post, kicks, goal for Atltico Madrid!
Towards the end of the match,
Atltico equalized and won the League.
In terms of talent,
I think Barcelona had more talent...
FC BARCELONA PLAYER
SPANISH NATIONAL SQUAD PLAYER
...but overall,
Atltico Madrid had everything,
the desire of winning,
the objective, the talent, the sacrifice.
They had actually everything.
And I mean, the merit is here,
to win against Barcelona, Madrid.
I sat on one of the seats
and Costa sat on the seat next to me,
the one like this,
and he put his hand on my shoulder.
We started talking. There's still
30 minutes to go. It's very difficult.
Twenty-five minutes to go.
It is still very difficult.
Fifteen minutes left.
Bara will surely score.
Ten minutes, five minutes.
Three minutes, extra time.
At the end of extra time,
when the ball went to one side,
I'll never forget Simeone did this
to the fourth official.
"We've worked harder than them.
We deserved it more. Finish it."
And when he finished,
in the stadium at that time,
there were close
to a 100,000 Barcelona fans,
and we were a minority of course.
So, there were only
50 or 60 people screaming.
[sportscaster] Atltico Madrid, with Arda
Turan and Costa, are La Liga champions.
They put them to sleep. I mean, they
put them to sleep for the whole match.
I think this is Simeone's
tactical genius at its peak.
So, for us, it's really bad for you
to suffer a draw, right?
To see the last opponent
celebrating the title in your stadium.
No, it wasn't cool at all.
ATLTICO MADRID PLAYER
Going to Neptuno is very special thing.
Winning a championship
with Atltico Madrid
is a very difficult
for an Atltico Madrid fan.
To make history in the world of football,
you need to become a champion.
[Arda] Tarkan's Nutcracker
was famous all over the world.
I also wanted to connect with the people.
And I wanted to put that kiss part
with a million and a half people
at the same time.
I was wearing a Turkish flag.
[indistinct pop music plays]
[UEFA Champions League Anthem" plays]
2014 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL
[Arda] If you were to turn to me
and ask me what you'd like
to go back to in your footballing life,
I'd like those three minutes back,
if we'd won.
We were the best team in the world
at set pieces.
But Sergio Ramos hit it magnificently.
REAL MADRID 4-1 ATLTICO MADRID
A great moments
Atltico Madrid's history.
Even though we lost,
it's one of the greatest moments.
But I come into the dressing room.
I don't want to cry.
I want to be cool and be like,
"Maybe we lost. Maybe we lost."
I walked into the dressing room like this.
David Villa was lying on the floor,
and he was crying his eyes out.
I said, I mean, David's crying.
World Cup, three Champions Leagues.
So at that moment, you realize what you've
done, and nobody can console anybody.
There's sobbing.
There are those who fell against the wall,
those who fell on the floor.
For the first time in my life,
I have been around so many,
God forbid, deaths.
Of course, nothing compares to these.
But what is called a nosebleed
came to me that day.
My nostrils were aching with sadness.
After all, it's a sport.
It's a recreational sport.
You have to have fun and enjoy it.
But I believe a lot in emotions when I do
this sport, when I live this sport.
I've seen emotions tale a team to another
place or take them to the bottom.
That's why it is very important to cry,
laugh, fight,
struggle, hug your teammates.
That day was one of those days.
Winning the Champions League
is probably a very big thing,
because I know from here,
losing the Champions League
is a big thing.
It's a very big thing,
[man] All right, man, if you...
Hello.
We wanted to push you a little bit
this time.
Welcome.
Arda also embodied that "our body"
sentiment, our emotional pride.
We go to Spain. Let's go to Arda's house.
His house was open to everyone.
[Okan Turan] The house was very big.
We used to entertain a lot of guests.
My brother used to rest and sleep
very comfortably.
In the evening, when we were sitting down,
he would ask for permission to sleep.
There is a misconception that something
like this happened in our house.
Arda Turan's house is thought
to be like one of the places you visit
when you go on a touristic trip.
Of course, it's nothing like that.
- [traditional folk music plays]
- [men yell out]
[Arda] It was a very pleasant house
to live in.
It has a small lawn in front.
It had a pool.
There was a basketball court,
table tennis, billiards.
So, you could do many sports
at the same time.
CAPTAIN, GALATASARAY
TURKISH NATIONAL SQUAD PLAYER
This was a very important thing for him.
Arda lived with love and care.
When he was first transferred, all this
mates, his whole family was with him.
They never let him alone.
ARDA TURAN'S FRIEND
I was in the same house in Madrid.
I was in the same house in Barcelona.
There was always a reaction here.
They turned it into Bayrampaa.
What if we hadn't turned it
into Bayrampaa?
What did they expect from us?
Was Bayrampaa a bad thing?
They turned it into Bayrampaa. Too many
groups of friends, too many people.
No matter what profession you do,
life goes on. We only have one life.
We need to do the right things
at the right moments.
I'll never be a 24-25-year-old
Atltico Madrid footballer again.
I'm very happy I went to those dinners
with my friends, or I went on those trips.
Every year he makes these huge dinners
at his house.
He brought everyone,
all the players, all the staff,
the kit men, the physios, everybody.
And he puts like a kebab
and makes this huge dinner a lot of times.
And, you know, the dress room
just loved this guy. Everybody loves him.
[Arda] We go out at night.
I'm back at three. I'm back at two.
Spain also has a long nightlife.
That's true. It's nothing.
They're doing the right thing.
Then we became peasants, too.
We couldn't even see as far as there.
After Aslihan,
we couldn't see there either.
[Aslihan] Wait a minute.
You're the biggest hillbilly.
- We told you.
- You said it.
That's what we said.
It's not that much. It's unbelievable.
After you... Yeah, even from there...
We're making a documentary.
- At least when we're making a documentary.
- Okay, aren't you?
In my experience, in our life,
I've seen what I can call
an "opportunistic entourage."
The people I assess
as the opportunistic entourage.
Arda has always had this thing in
his life. We should have an opinion, too.
We should direct him. We should do it.
You don't exist.
This is our biggest contrast,
our biggest divergence.
It is the most unbalanced issue
and it is always a matter of discussion
in our house.
Let's hope Arda doesn't break up with
me. [laughs]
There are one or two guests
in a footballer's house.
We had 20 people in our house every day.
There'd be a match.
The whole nation would buy tickets.
As a mum, these things made me very angry.
What happened?
No one was there when he went down a bit.
I think we were treated unfairly that day.
Well, we were nervous.
There was a bit we thought
should've been a red card.
But no. You go back
and you're this close to being eliminated.
Despite the old rule of scoring on
opponent's grounds.
So they scored. After half time,
the referee was a lot nicer
towards the Barcelona players
and more distant to us. Stricter.
And that made me furious.
On top of that, Gabi was shown
a red card. In the locker room.
Cholo said, "No one can crush my team, anywhere.
We're not going to lose to them
even if we have ten men.
We'll go down properly if we have to."
After that, they stepped on my feet.
My shoe came off, but the referee said,
"Carry on."
When I saw the shoe,
I threw it at the referee.
I'm glad it didn't hit the target,
God forbid.
Pedro Pablo was also there,
just passing by.
So I asked Pedro to give me my shoe back.
Right after that, Simeone replaced me.
But was I right in my reaction? No.
[Pedro Pablo] As he's a person
with a strong character,
he took off his boot and threw it at the
referee. He was shown a yellow card.
If the referee had seen him,
he could have sent him off.
Arda targeting the referee,
none of us could believe it.
I think it's not more than the fact
that referees can make mistakes,
because they are human, too,
and such behaviour is not appropriate for
their and the club's image, especially.
But at the end of the day, inside him,
I'm sure that he's a very nice guy,
and then, obviously,
you can react in a bad way
if someone is really startling you.
It happened to everyone. It's human.
But when I saw that on the news,
I said, "It's Arda's style."
You have to accept it, how he is,
when he is good or not good.
Gerry is right. They had a very good team,
the best team in the history of the world.
We were doing everything we could
to stop them,
and when I threw my shoe,
nobody avoided me.
Everyone, all my teammates
were there for me.
Sometimes,
you have to stand up to something.
You have to stand up against injustice.
Not the way I did it. But always.
[sportscaster] Arda Turan moving forward.
Rayo's defence is early.
Arda Turan is driving that ball
and dividing the defenders.
Now he's struggling a little...
He turns it away, behind the defence line,
Arda with a header. Arda, one more time.
Goal! Goal! Goal!
Raul Garcia headed the ball down. Arda
shoots. It deflected, and it's a goal!
I think what Arda did there
was very special, very beautiful,
and he said to his manager, Simeone, or
you could ask your teammates over there.
No one can forget Arda.
You can't erase Arda.
He wasn't a legend. He is a legend.
I believe that in the hearts of all those
who lived through that period,
during the years Arda spent with us,
he will always be there.
Because, it's not only a matter of his
talent, or the way he played,
but most of all for the way he was
and the way he is.
We have an interesting relationship.
We both know a lot about each other.
When we met, we both get misty-eyed.
A father and son, brother and brother,
we have a bond between us that a Spaniard
and a Turk could never create.
I wanted to leave the team a year ago.
There were offers from all over Europe.
He asked me to stay another year,
promising to send me to any club
I wanted. He kept his word.
I immediately flew to Barcelona.
I discussed the terms there, reached
an agreement, and then called Arda.
We met at a restaurant,
just when things were going smoothly,
papers fell out of his bag.
I saw the Barcelona crest on the papers.
It was a great offer. I asked what he did.
He said he rejected it.
I said, "This is not enough for you.
I accepted this one.
Arda was surprised, of course.
I said, "Are you out of your mind? What if
they said no? It's Barcelona, damn it."
Then he stood up, walked five-ten meters.
He raised his hands in the air, prayed.
Tears came to his eyes.
I called Miguel to say thank you.
He said, "Arda, calm down. Come to Madrid.
And then we'll sort it out.
Just calm down and leave it to me."
It was election time in Barcelona.
Barcelona had a six month transfer ban.
Arda won't be able to play for six months.
It would be announced after the elections,
15 to 20 days later.
I returned to Trkiye. It was one
of the hardest periods ever for me.
I was going to Barcelona,
but I couldn't tell anyone.
I couldn't even say goodbye properly.
It was summer. It came and went.
It was so hard. I love Atltico Madrid.
They have a special place in my heart,
my teammates there, my managers,
from Manzano to Simeone, their assistants.
When I think about them,
I feel overwhelmed.
The four years I spent there
were spectacular.
For me,
it was one of the most epic squads ever.
We all saw that we could defy the big
clubs with other aspects of football.
Arda Turan,
who's transferred to Barcelona,
went to Spain today
to sign his contract with his new club.
BARCELONA
Silence! Silence!
[anchor] Now it's time for the president
of the management committee, Ramn Adel...
[fans cheering]
When you look at it like this,
it looks very nice.
It's a very beautiful city,
but it's a bit complicated.
It reminds me of a difficult journey.
And when he arrived, I said I'm going
to receive a lot of the ball.
I'll receive a lot of assists,
so, I was very happy with
Arda coming to Barcelona,
because he is an incredible player.
When we signed him, for Barcelona,
we believed that he was the kind of player
that we needed a lot,
because he could give you everything.
Defensive, offensive, talent, goals,
sacrifice, absolutely everything.
[Neymar] We were always together
when he started the games.
He played in midfield. He was a versatile
player in attack or on the wings.
However, when you have a squad
full of great players,
it's always enjoyable to have players
who can play in many positions.
It's always great
to compete for positions.
[newscaster] Vidal.
There's a cross and Arda scores!
Arda Turan scores a spectacular goal.
Two Barcelona players,
now there are three inside the box.
Another chance and he scores!
Arda Turan scores!
86th minute into the game.
Arda with the ball, again, he turns to
the post and... a spectacular goal!
[Fatih Terim] Can you imagine having
Neymar in the position he plays?
Messi there,
and Suarez completing the attacking line.
For his position,
he had to fight the biggest players.
So, it was not easy
to get in this position,
but he was able to fight with them,
you know, to take the place of them.
I had the chance to play
for the greatest team ever.
That was a great life experience.
Working with Luis Enrique taught me
so many things for my managerial career.
Working with Luis Enrique
was like going to college.
The training sessions, and play-by-play
analysis were so good
that he had me thinking
in a different way about football.
[newscaster] Here he comes, Arda Turan,
second goalpost. Goal, goal, goal, goal.
They're pacing firmly towards
the first position. Look. Arda. Goal.
Measured with a precision ruler.
Careful, Bara's coming, second goalpost.
Arda. Hat trick for the Turk.
Another goal for Bara,
scored by Arda Turan,
the third in his card,
and the fourth in...
Apart from the hat tricks I scored,
I scored two goals early
in the Super Cup against Seville.
There were plenty of chances
for the third goal
and I wasted them very easily
in the Super Cup.
Otherwise, I would have scored a hat trick
in the Super Cup final in Barcelona.
[sportscaster 1] Defend whenever you want.
[sportscaster 2] Exactly. Be careful with
that ball, going straight to Arda's boots!
And the ball ends up inside.
Little hope was left for Seville
to qualify for the playoffs.
At the end of the game,
they announced the man of the match.
When they said my name, I turned to Messi
and asked his permission to go up there.
It would be rude to accept that award
while the greatest player ever was there.
But my performance
that day was more than decent.
People I consider in my own mind
to be very important people,
many of them disappointed me when
I met them.
Andres was the opposite.
I admired him even more after I met him.
I still have the Iniesta book on my desk.
I like to see it there.
He is the artist of this game.
I'm very happy that I got to play with
him, shared the same pitch with him.
And most importantly got his respect.
CAPTAIN, FC BARCELONA
SPANISH NATIONAL SQUAD CAPTAIN
For me, Arda has always been
a very complete player...
Uh... very...
technically skilled player,
and, in that sense,
you see that admiration,
that respect he felt for me.
Uh, as I said, for me, well,
sharing training sessions, matches,
and day to day life was really beautiful,
so it was a pleasure to meet him.
In the Giants League,
Barcelona will face Paris Saint-Germain
tonight, after their 4-0 defeat.
Luis Enrique, the manager,
stated that despite the four-nil defeat...
BARCELONA - PSG 8
MARCH 2017
...they would beat them six-nil.
I knew, by the choices he made
during game plan training,
that Luis Enrique wanted me to play.
He was on the fence
about putting me out there.
Then, I was warming up when the score
was three-nil and we conceded a goal.
After the goal, I thought I'm coming on
to replace Iniesta. A great honour.
I said to Leo, "We're on the pitch and we
can change it. We can score three goals.
Let's keep going. Let's keep going."
At that moment,
Arda stepped onto the field in my place,
and I actually think he played
an important role
in securing the comeback.
[sportscaster] Neymar keeps going.
Roberto touches the ball... goal!
A tremendous decision
and with an extraordinary Neymar
who managed to do this...
[sportscaster]
He's there to aid his teammate. Arda.
Pique is right behind him.
Whoops!
What an impossible pass, huh?
- Okay, no...
- No, no, no, no.
[both laugh]
But yeah, I mean, you can see
how talented Arda was.
And it was very difficult to stop him, at
that time when he was at Atltico Madrid.
You enjoyed playing that time, huh?
Ah! I can see you...
How is your Spanish
after so many years in Spain?
[both laugh]
Really bad, really bad, really bad.
How long you've been in Spain?
- Seven and a half years. Six...
- Seven and a half?
And your Spanish...?
[in Spanish] A little, yeah.
How are you? How's it going?
I love you, brother. How's your family?
- Some wine? How about some wine later?
- With a little bit of wine, much better.
[both laugh]
THE HISTORICAL ARDA TURAN BENCH
He put his hands like this.
Arda Turan's bench was found.
LOOKING FOR THE TURAN BENCH
And they say I don't have property
in Barcelona. Here it is.
Hello. I'm Arda Turan.
I'm in Confrontation
on Amazon Prime Video.
There's no story behind the bench.
It's completely improvised.
There's a sushi restaurant
across the street that I love.
My friends, the ones you hear about,
the Bayrampaa gang, or my guests,
would come out here to have a smoke.
I'd give them a piece of my mind because
I was alone at the table, a waste of time.
When I went out with them,
while they were in the smoking area,
I used to sit on this bench
and run my mouth or have a cup of coffee.
That's how this bench became famous.
I can't believe what you're going through.
- I can't believe it either.
- [laughs]
It feels like I actually own this bench.
[chuckles]
Now, you see the guys here.
These are all students. We asked them,
and they asked our teachers
to take them to the Arda Turan bench.
It's not even a pretty bench. [chuckles]
But some people tie ribbons on it.
Like a saint is entombed here.
Really interesting. Strange folk we are.
THE FALL
[sportscaster] Seluk behind the ball.
Seluk shoots and goal!
I was so happy about that goal.
I had no idea the sorrow
it would bring me later.
But I was very happy that day.
We were shedding tears of joy.
[sportscaster] Long distance, oh!
I can't say we played well
in the second half.
We didn't start well, either.
The national squad didn't make a good
start to the Euro 2016 Championship.
There are some serious allegations
about the decline in the national squad.
[sportscaster] As captain, Arda Turan
relays the message to the authorities
that his teammates are asking for
a bonus of 500.000 Euros.
The tournament bonus, which
we did not ask for in the first place,
was an important sum for everyone.
[Caner Erkn] One of the national team
managers called Arda.
EYPSPOR PLAYER
TURKISH NATIONAL SQUAD PLAYER
He said, "We couldn't deposit your bonus,
but I'll try to sort it out today."
I went to the masseur's room that night.
It was Ramadan again.
Some of the staff there had named
their children Arda because of me.
I told him that as he had his bonus, you'd
think he'd buy his captain ice cream.
The guy's face turned pale.
No one said a word. They hadn't been paid.
Now I am the team captain,
I've received my full bonus.
Our employees were supposed to get
a 10% bonus, but they didn't received it.
Volkan en and Cenk, who had the same
play time had received different bonuses.
Burak Yilmaz received none at all.
So, with the utmost respect and manners,
I took this to the coach.
That same board member
talked to Coach Fatih.
Probably told him that he'd spoken
with Arda and told him about...
that he told him
that they'd pay the bonuses today.
Coach Fatih thought
that Arda called the guy.
What happened was not easy. It was hard.
Maybe they could have figured
something out before I was involved.
But despite everything,
because we were in the middle
of the European Championship, um,
some things were beyond repairing.
[sportscaster] Cross, Morata, and goal.
The national squad
lost three-nil against Spain.
The players and coach Fatih Terim
were all criticised harshly by the media.
In international arenas like the European
Football Championship or the World Cup,
especially if you start with a loss,
it becomes hell for national team.
Because that is when
the social lynching begins.
You gave them everything,
but their agenda is money.
You start to look for a scapegoat.
It's either the manager,
or the most prominent figure in the team.
From that point forward,
the gods have spoken.
[sportscaster] There is tension, arguments
and protests between Arda and the fans.
Although, physically, he was on the pitch,
it was like he was somewhere else.
He looked like he wanted to cry
his eyes out, but was unable to do it.
I was really surprised in this moment
about the situation Arda had.
And sometimes I feel a bit like
looking in the mirror.
Uh, when I look this, because sometimes
when you have the feeling
that you are more loved outside
than in your country. This is really hard.
Now, for a player
who had played for a long time in Spain,
it's one thing for Spanish fans
to support him,
and another thing to be booed
in front of Turkish fans,
while you're wearing the national squad
shirt, hurts you. It really hurts you.
Well, for us, for Spain,
as Spaniards, uh...
it was difficult to understand
that reaction
of his own people
or his countrymen towards him.
But, you know, you see him as a colleague,
you see him as a friend,
and, obviously, when a friend of yours...
when things aren't going well
for your friend,
it's obvious that you hurt for him
and, in that sense,
we tried to show him our love.
[Arda] What they did to me that day
was marvellous.
It was when I realized that I had
an impact on Spanish football.
It was really special for me.
Frankly, I was embarrassed for my country.
It was just the second game. We still had
a chance to advance to the next round.
At first, the
Spaniards were silent, surprised.
They tried to understand
what was going on.
Then they rebelled. Okay, we get it. And
this is Arda Turan. They supported him.
But if they were in the same situation,
they would have done the same thing.
So, no national team should be like that.
It's not a losing game. They didn't play.
The person they'd channel their anger at
would be the most prominent figure
Not that he was at fault or anything.
Because he was their greatest star,
who else could they have
held responsible for the situation?
The Arda Turan crisis in the national
squad is also a hot topic.
I'm having trouble
tolerating the national squad,
from the coach to the most feeble player.
Who the hell does he think he is?
The interesting thing about 2016,
I think, was that Fatih Terim
fought the only battle he knew he'd lose.
Coach Fatih is always on top of things.
He boasts that. He's praised for that.
Could we have managed things better?
Perhaps we could have.
Perhaps, when some things come from
the people you love the most,
no matter how much you
try to hide your emotions,
or tell yourself that you shouldn't
give in to your emotions anyway.
You start getting emotional. That happens.
Your son, not your player,
a player you see as a son could do
unexpected things to you
and you start to wonder.
I don't know. I'm not sure,
but it's possible.
When someone has a momentum
in a relationship, it's like a marriage.
Either you have to stand up to it,
to meet somewhere together.
Or someone told me that getting married
is the art of taking it easy.
I think the relationship between
coaches and star players is like that.
There's a place where you have
to take things down a notch.
Both the player and the coach. I think
there's a bit of a lack of humour there.
Especially after the failure
in the European Championship,
the whole country needed a patsy,
um, for that failure.
At least, in sports circles.
Arda was the one
who suffered the most through all that.
There, that team spirit
never quite matched that of 2008.
There could have been
a turning point there.
If we had made it out of the group,
we would have progressed
because the treatment had started.
Do you understand what I'm saying?
But when we were eliminated,
we took sides.
[Mehmet Demirkol] Unfortunately,
there were no winners. We all lost.
Because the media pretended
to cover the story...
and they covered one side of it.
Mostly.
And it was generally Coach Fatih's side.
NATIONAL DISASTER
[Mehmet Arslan] We, as five journalists,
travelled to Paris.
From there, we went to Nice.
They planned to have dinner
with Fatih Terim the day before
or a few days before the match in Nice.
And then they told me
whatever was discussed at dinner.
What was discussed was this. I'm stating
what my friends told me directly.
Burak Yilmaz and Arda Turan cannot wear
the national team jersey anymore.
One, these were the manager's words.
Two, the manager's words, I mean not
himself but someone who was present.
So far, so good,
but the story lacked a third leg
Mehmet Arslan,
why didn't you ask Arda Turan?
Yes, I was talking about the bonuses.
But whose bonuses and for what?
Someone should explain that.
How did this break out?
How did this happen? They can tell you
everything that those executives did.
I felt that I was very unfair to Arda Turan.
Because what I learned in the aftermath
made everything crystal clear.
Arda Turan hadn't asked
for a single penny for himself.
Arda Turan negotiated
to protect the rights of many team staff,
from the equipment manager to the cook,
who served the national team.
At this point, I confess
very clearly and openly. I was used.
It is one of the news stories I regret the
most throughout my journalism career.
I switched off my phone
and went to my mum in Akay.
I kept my phone off for a whole week.
I was so sad.
In the European Championship,
where we got the necessary score
from the Czech Republic,
but we failed to advance
and I became the patsy for the bonuses.
At the cottage for example,
we went there for a walk,
but some kids started coming at us.
"Aren't you ashamed
that you were playing for the money?"
Law enforcement in the area heard about it
and they took the boys in.
Arda told them to let the kids go.
He said, "They are just saying
what they've been hearing."
Today, we fought for our country,
for our jersey and for our honour.
I think we've fulfilled that mission.
That's why I am very happy.
Tomorrow, hopefully, something miraculous
happens and we make it to the Final 16.
We'll see what happens after.
I really think we deserved to be happy
and to celebrate, today.
[reporter] We have footage of you crying.
I tried not to cry. They've already made
my mother cry enough.
But I will hold them accountable.
[reporter]
You were the most hard-working player.
[Arda] God is with me.
[interviewer] The individuals
who will be held accountable,
what kind of plan do you have in mind
regarding holding them accountable?
I told the truth
except for the end of the interview.
But I don't agree
with the accountability thing. It's ugly.
I was very upset about the family
and everything, but it's wrong.
I wouldn't say the same thing again.
HIS ECONOMY
ARDA'S ECONOMY
He made a comment about the stock
market or something. I said, "Why?"
It was like he had a condition where
he comments to every mic in his face.
[interviewer]
Arda Turan evaluated the Turkish economy.
He said, "The Turkish economy is good.
There is fluctuation in the dollar.
I think interest rates should fall,"
I'm fucked. There's nothing to say.
It's just retarded.
So I have an opinion on something
I know nothing about.
It's disgraceful.
There's nothing to say. I'm full of shit.
What am I doing in an interview
with an economic magazine?
They shouldn't have asked me
for that interview.
I did an interview
so I wouldn't offend someone.
The state of the dollar,
blah, blah, blah, I fucked up.
That's what I heard. The economy
wasn't bad then. That's what I said.
So, I'm not very skilled
when it comes to money.
Whatever.
For a strong Trkiye, yes, I'm in.
Dear Arda, are you in, too?
[reporter] Footballer Arda Turan also
immediately shared a video and said yes.
Then he called out to Burak Ylmaz.
Coach Ridvan, I got your call,
I'm in for a stronger Trkiye.
Burak Yilmaz, are you in too, my brother?
It was one 100% unprecedented.
When Coach Rdvan called out to me,
I recorded that while I was travelling.
I accept any criticism about that.
Could I talk about it or discuss it?
You're right about everything. But if
you're going to bash me about saying yes,
that's where I draw the line.
How much investment have we made
in the development of athletes
in our country in every statement?
That we expect Arda Turan to act and speak
as if he were a university graduate
and steer the country in any way
with his attitude, words or acts?
Michael Jordan is still criticised by
Obama for not expressing his opinion.
If they asked for my opinion
on political issues.
That's how I think about those matters.
If saying this in public hurts people,
there's nothing I can do.
I can say I'm sorry, but I've never
criticised any of my friends
who think differently so harshly.
[Mehmet Arslan] In a place like Catalonia,
if you play for a Catalan team
and send a message to Turkish politics,
the Catalans will tear you apart.
When touched by intentions...
good or not so good,
uh, emotions can override logic.
Sometimes, it can lead
to not making the right decisions.
TO HELL WITH MONEY
[reporter] Arda Turan,
captain of the national squad,
is once again in the centre of a scandal.
Team captain Arda Turan made
derogatory remarks towards Bilal Mee,
a columnist for Milliyet newspaper.
The footballer's verbal attack quickly
escalated into a physical altercation.
"That man is probably older
than his father.
What Captain Arda did was wrong.
Since Arda Turan joined Barcelona, his
value has decreased by 11 million euros.
The journalists covering the national
squad are on the same plane as them.
Arda Turan grabs Bilal Mee by the throat
and starts shouting expletives.
And he says he'd, you know, do things
to whoever took him on that plane.
We are the ones
who make the decisions about plane.
It doesn't concern any player,
who we take and who we don't.
I know how much he loves Bilal Abi.
There's a bond between them
beyond their relationship
as journalists and footballer.
Of course, it's not something
anyone would think of.
We didn't seat them together.
There is distance between everyone.
There are sections.
It was all planned beforehand.
[reporter] Sports journalist Bilal Mee
was attacked physically and verbally.
The journalists protested the footballer
and left the room.
When the player started his speech,
reporters left as an act of protest.
I'm not here as captain
of the national squad.
I'm wrong, 100%.
More than being a mistake, it was wrong.
That's for sure.
Even now, I'd like to apologize to Bilal.
It was unnecessary. Do you understand?
I could call Bilal and have a coffee with
him and ask, "You think this is fair?
You're like a father to me.
You think there is truth to this story?"
Look, we served this country
for so long. We did our duty."
I had to deal with it through
another form of communication.
That was a mistake. That was wrong.
This is more than regret. I'm sorry.
This is more important to me. I'm ashamed.
But Bilal is embarrassed too. Believe me.
But Bilal is embarrassed too.
Because he did that to someone
he visited at home and dined with.
He went from being right
to being in the wrong position.
Because you are a national team player,
you are a Galatasaray player,
or Atltico or Barcelona player.
You cannot behave like this.
ARDA TURAN'S UGLY FAREWELL.
ARDA LEFT THE NATIONAL TEAM
CRIME AND PUNISHMENYOU ARE FIRED
"The decision to send is mine.
Clear and definitive."
I think the time has come. I want to thank
everyone I have worked with so far,
my friends, the many people
I've talked to internally, and my family.
My other friends
wanted to leave it with me.
I said it wasn't right.
This is sabotaging the national team.
How can I let it happen?
I was damaging the national team.
I wanted to leave on my own that day.
I realized my teammates were insisting.
[coughs]
There's going to be misunderstanding
in this country.
I told them I'd read it,
and I went downstairs,
but I never thought of reading it.
I decided to quit the national team.
I quit.
It's only after something like that that
they can make peace with Coach Fatih.
After the explosion point.
You explode, you release your energy.
That's how the gods fight.
[woman]
Will Arda Turan leave the Barcelona?
According the Spanish press, yes.
[man] He said, "I'm a child of
Galatasaray. If I return to Trkiye,
you know where to find me.
But I'd like to keep playing in Barcelona
till the end of my football days."
I played a lot
in Luis Enrique's last season.
In the end, I had a good season.
Then came Valverde, a new manager,
but although I was the next highest
scoring player after Messi, Neymar
and Suarez, he didn't pick me
Of course, football is not about goals.
Especially not the first thing
in Barcelona football, I know that.
But he didn't pick me.
We had Luis Suarez, and then Messi,
of course, in the attacking place.
They were... I mean, they scored a lot of
goals, and they were very important to us.
And then from all the other players
that he had, I mean, he had to choose,
Valverde, at that time and... he chose
all the players, rather than him, so...
In a squad of 22, 25 players,
that all of them, they are very talented.
It's always tough, and sometimes maybe,
um, you are not fair
with different players
and maybe that was one
of the situations with Arda.
When you're young, you can do things
that you can't do when you're older.
As you age, you need to pay more
attention, and I didn't do any of these.
I chose to trust my talent,
but it didn't work out. I made a mistake.
Arda could go wherever he wanted.
I mean, he could go wherever he wanted.
I'm not saying Miami or LA Galaxy.
He could've gone to Arsenal.
He could've gone to Chelsea.
He could have gone.
He could have gone to Bayern Munich.
Because at that point in your career,
"I want to play for Barcelona.
If I can't play, I'll go to Baakehir."
No footballer would say that.
He said there were clubs that want me.
I told him,
"Don't ever come back to Trkiye."
I literally begged him.
I told you not to come back.
You'll come back anyway. It doesn't matter
where you go back to. Don't go back.
I told him that I don't find it right
for a player
who plays or can't play in Barcelona
to return to Trkiye.
He said, "Let's part ways."
When I told this to the Barcelona
executives, they were surprised.
Because until that day, no Barcelona
player had ever said they wanted to leave.
What's the mistake?
Getting out
of top-level football so early.
And is it really a mistake?
If you don't have that love left,
you'll get out.
I came back to Trkiye because of my
mother's illness and long-term weariness,
and I thought I was doing harm
to my family, and that's how I decided.
I was worried about what was going on.
I didn't want to lose my loved ones.
Because there were serious illnesses.
Abdullah Avci called.
He really wanted him.
"You have to play, Arda."
He said, "Come here. Play on loan,
then come back."
At that time, Coach Fatih and I did not
see eye to eye at Galatasaray.
And Coach Fatih was at Galatasaray.
So, I guess that's why that didn't happen.
I personally didn't want
to play for Beikta.
We had a lot of talks.
I guess I was too expensive for them,
but I wasn't very interested either.
I couldn't play for a club
other than Galatasaray.
All the offers were for six months.
I hadn't played for six months.
I didn't think six months
was enough to step up my game.
Only Baakehir
had a one and a half year offer.
If we look at it as a team preference,
it's very wrong.
But I'm ending my career
and I want to end it with a good contract.
If that offer is from your hometown,
that's what we call hitting the lottery.
[Mehmet Demirkol] It's a great success for
Baakehir. We should congratulate them.
Arda is remembered by his latest scandals,
but we shouldn't forget what came before.
I'm so happy.
I came with a lot of belief and desire.
I hope that together we will achieve
the goals we share and think about.
The Baakehir experience
was very good for me.
I learned a lot
and they welcomed me very well.
Dear Gksel Gmda
always used to say one thing,
"Arda, you didn't come to Fenerbahe,
Beikta, or anywhere else.
Galatasaray's door is always open to you.
Even at Baakehir,
you can be a Galatasaray fan."
[sportscaster] Arda Turan is on the line.
Arda is on the ground.
The referee says Arda was the last one
to touch the ball.
A red card, a direct one.
Baakehir is down to nine men.
[woman] It's reported that Arda Turan has
been referred to the disciplinary board
due to unsportsmanlike conduct, verbal
abuse, and threats towards the referee.
The strangulation incident, it was a time
when I was under a lot of pressure.
I knew I'd be in a lot of trouble
if we lost in Baakehir,
and there was another responsibility.
I'm very sorry and wrong about that.
It was something I never wanted to do,
but I wasn't myself at that time.
My behaviour was not healthy or right.
But I still think that the penalty
was a very heavy penalty
given to me even for that day,
it was given to my name.
They gave me a 16-match penalty.
What is happening in this country today?
They don't give you a 16-match ban.
They reduced it to eight.
I said this back then.
If they wanted to enforce justice
through me, then be my guest.
Arda is someone
who lives with his emotions.
For him, logic comes after emotions.
First, his emotions lead him
and he hits a wall.
Then when his logic hits a wall,
he says, "I made a mistake."
Therefore, it's his emotions
that manage Arda Turan.
Bara's Arda is facing accusations that
could lead to a Turkish prison sentence.
He was once a famous football player.
Now he is known for something else,
Arda Turan.
[female reporter] The fight
between footballer Arda Turan
and singer Berkay
has been taken to court.
Football player Arda Turan's and singer
Berkay ahin's incident with guns,
which started in Emirgan, Istanbul
and continued in a hospital in Etiler.
Arda had broken Berkay's nose
and during the argument at the hospital
Arda Turan's gun had gone off.
Arda Turan was called in for questioning.
What did you give a statement for?
The allegations are serious.
Pointing a gun, fighting...
[reporter] Arda Turan's football career
is also at stake.
He could be sentenced to up to 11 years
in prison for three different crimes.
If he's convicted for more than two years,
he'll be banned from playing football.
Arda had made the headlines again.
It was a very unfortunate incident.
One night, at a club, he got into a fight.
And it was said that the person he got
into a fight with had harassed his wife.
So, Arda got into a fight
and went to the hospital with his gun.
He fired it. That's how the story went on.
As far as I know,
it was late in the night,
so he hadn't been there
since the beginning of the night.
He's going to nightclub. I was eight
and a half months pregnant at the time.
It was five, or half past five...
I received this call.
She told me something like that.
She told me that my husband abused her.
I told her I'd like to hear the rest of it
from my husband and I hung up.
Arda didn't know until he came home.
He had that fight.
He thinks it was
for a completely different reason.
But Arda didn't know the part
that came to me.
He found out when he came home.
And unfortunately, I was in a bad mood.
When he saw me like that,
I mean, at the point he saw it,
Arda already had a little bit more.
He became impulsive and reacted
by leaving the house.
I couldn't restrain myself.
He couldn't restrain himself either.
They all told me not to go They all stood
in my way. They told me to stop.
I'd go to the hospital over
such an ugly allegation.
He got in the car and drove off. I got in
the car after because I was worried.
I knew which roads he'd take to the
hospital. I knew it he was headed there.
I immediately called a few of my friends,
and he was driving so fast.
I told them to cut in. Just stop him.
Pull a car in front of him.
That's how ridiculous it was.
He was driving like a madman.
I had no idea what would happen next.
We were on our way there for
the wrong reasons. And packed.
[reporter] Arda Turan has been exonerated
from sexual abuse charges,
but sentenced to two years, eight months
and 15 days in prison
for carrying a gun without a permit,
assaulting with a firearm
and deliberate wounding.
I've been charged with assault and battery
and possession of firearms.
And naturally, I'm guilty
of all those charges and I was convicted.
It was wrong of me
to say anything about interest rates.
I was wrong to attack the referee.
But the biggest mistake
I made was not the bar fight.
It was going to the hospital with a gun.
Are you a mafia boss?
What's wrong with you?
What is this power intoxication?
All of these are real, true.
The court has concluded the case.
Arda Turan was sentences to two years,
eight months, and 15 days in prison,
but since the detailed ruling
has been delayed,
Arda Turan won't serve time in prison.
I don't regret it.
- Do you think it was wrong?
- Wrong.
Arda Turan's career was coming to an end.
He wasn't playing at Baakehir anymore.
Arda Turan needed to retire from football
as the Galatasaray Arda Turan.
Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim gave
the green light to Arda Turan's return.
Terim said,
"Arda deserves a second chance."
If you ask whether Arda should end
this football career at Galatasaray,
my vote is in favour of that.
It has always my biggest dream to end
my career at Galatasaray.
I wanted my children to see me retire
in a Galatasaray jersey.
I've always been a Galatasaray fan.
Galatasaray is my family, my hope,
my love. A passion in my life.
Who could say no
to retiring at Galatasaray?
Coach Fatih really went out of his way
to make that happen.
[reporter]
Arda Turan returned to Galatasaray.
I want to say something to Coach Fatih.
I am very happy to reunite
with both my jersey and my club.
He talked with Coach Fatih.
Again, out of love and respect
for Galatasaray,
he signed a, an empty contract.
I said having someone in my team doesn't
mean they have a place in my heart.
That's what I said while I was picking
players for the national squad.
But, you know,
kids make you angry sometimes.
Sometimes they surprise you,
and sometimes they make you emotional.
That guy who came to me,
kissed my hand and hugged me
was the Arda I helped growing up, loved
and who had a place in my heart.
[Arda] I kissed Coach Fatih's hand
in front of all these people.
It is one those moments in life
that I'm proud of.
Coach Fatih did so much for me.
Whatever happens in our lives,
he was always there to hold our hands
and to lead us.
His mission in his second coming to Florya
was different, obviously.
It was more like grooming him
for coaching.
We lost the title
because of really simple mistakes.
We couldn't fix the pitch, and we lost
the championship with just one goal.
Afterwards,
I suffered a very severe injury.
My deltoid ligament tore, and after that,
I could never truly return to football.
[Blent Korkmaz] After retiring football,
being invited back to Atltico Madrid,
and receiving a plaque,
shows what an important mark he left.
Europeans don't only care
about your football.
They care about your character.
And that is what makes a club.
The attitude of the club,
the attitude of the board.
So, they did the right thing.
I hope the same thing happens in Trkiye.
I hope Galatasaray will act that way.
[Arda] Without any farewell,
the things said behind my back
had really bothered me. It upset me.
When we were young, we could handle it.
We could endure it on the road,
but at the end,
after putting in so much effort,
it still bothered me to hear things said
behind my back, so I quietly withdrew.
A NEW BEGINNING
[reporter] Arda Turan,
a prominent name in Turkish football,
is making his debut as a manager.
He signed a deal with Eypspor.
[players chatter]
[players call out]
[Arda] I was grooming myself
for coaching after football.
Coach Kerem was so eager
for me to do that.
He always pushed me.
We discussed how to blend the systems
of Atltico Madrid and Barcelona,
which has always been my dream, and which
training methods to use moving forward.
[players call out]
[Arda] Good old Fatih Kulaksz,
our vice president, I had a meeting.
He said we could meet
after the Gztepe game.
And I asked him how I was supposed to lead
my team if I was scared of Gztepe.
[newscaster] Gztepe secured three points
with Kvasian's goal in the 20th minute.
Eypspor with Arda Turan taking charge,
suffered their second consecutive defeat,
dropping to fourth place with 57 points.
It was the toughest match.
The toughest match, and losing was likely.
I wouldn't have wanted to start my career
with such a match.
But he challenge himself.
He said, "No, I'll go out there."
If adrenaline has fallen into your heart,
if it has become a part of you,
you live with it constantly.
You have no other business.
One period closes, another opens.
We've become a wonderful family,
embarked on a beautiful journey together,
with all its ups and down.
The most important thing for me
is consistency from you every week.
Long-term concentration
is needed for this dream.
I love you all very much. Hopefully,
our journey ends with a championship.
This is beautiful memory
on our road to victory.
Thank you very much. You are very kind.
[players chat and call out]
[Arda] There was the challenge
of this league.
This league has dynamics and differences,
like terms
that emphasize transitioning play.
I was so disturbed
when I heard about those,
because when it comes to football,
I'm an idealist.
I mean, not the dynamics of games,
leagues, sides,
but the dynamics of football.
If you do the right things in football,
I always thought it might be good.
We don't make transfers,
but we use our own analysis room
with technological devices,
improving
our athletic performance department.
Now we are working on improving
our fields and developing our facilities.
I believe in my coaching
and in my myself in this regard.
When I was together with him
in the dressing room,
you can see that he likes
to take care about details.
He was looking to the other side,
to see what happened.
And finally, also,
I think that these big players,
they play at this level
and so many big games.
I think they can give many, many,
back to the players.
[indistinct chattering, laughter]
Because the coach wants to
be very successful,
he wants to get quick results.
EYPSPOR PLAYER
He wants to play better. He could be
dissatisfied even when we played well.
I think the coach can be a little tense,
especially in some specific games.
[in English] To right, to right sometimes.
This side, side...
Run, because spread out there,
everybody's come there.
But everybody goes
to the early, early disposition.
Not... I want run! Run, run!
[in Turkish] I need you right here.
"He's not getting angry at things
he could get angry at right now,
and he's tolerating them."
I think Arda definitely
is gonna be a huge,
best coach in Trkiye,
because he has all this passion.
The way he talks,
he talks with so much passion.
He convinces you of everything.
Well, football has to be
something complete,
something mixed, and in this case
he spent years with Simeone,
so I think he has a very good idea
of how the game's played.
From Simeone,
I learned the importance of defence.
When you still haven't conceded a goal,
you always have a chance to win.
That's why defence is the basis of the
offensive football I'm trying to utilise.
From Luis Enrique,
I learned to always analyse the game
and stick to tactics and systems.
Fatih Terim taught me to be courageous
and not deviate from my own game,
regardless of the opponent,
under the right conditions.
He has to win every match in Trkiye.
Especially when a player like Arda Turan
is appointed as manager.
He has to win every game.
After every game he loses.
He has to face the fact
that he will be criticized more severely
than any other manager in this country.
Well, now he is having a lot of success
as a coach
and I think that he can be
more successful.
Even though he was a guy who understood
the game very much.
He knew how to play well.
I'm sure that he will bring
all this emotional part,
but also all the knowledge
that he has regarding football,
all the experience he has.
He can be a very complete coach.
Inshallah, one day I will become
the head coach of Galatasaray Club.
Inshallah, one day I will also become
coach of Atltico Madrid.
I hope he finishes at the top
of the league, as a champion.
EYPSPOR IS TAKING THE FIELD
FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
[dramatic music plays]
[low chattering]
We love daddy very much.
And we're proud of him.
I love you so much, Daddy.
[indistinct chattering]
It's time to make the dream a reality.
Today, your families said
the most wonderful things.
Go out there and make them happy.
God be with you.
[fans sing] Hooray, hooray, hooray
Hooray, champion Eyp!
Hooray, hooray, hooray, hooray
Champion Eyp!
Hooray, hooray, hooray, hooray...
[sportscaster]
And the match is over, dear viewers.
Eypspor is promoted to the Super League.
They're celebrating their success
and their win.
To win the biggest trophy in Europe
by coaching the teams I played for,
that's my dream.
When I started playing,
I had these dreams back then as well
It may seem irrational now but I'm going
to do that someday, and I believe that.
When you look at the whole thing,
from Arda Turan, who was born in 1987.
The story that has come so far
is a marvellous story for me, for myself.
Could I go through it again?
I think it's very difficult.
Because it would take a lot
of struggle and energy.
But because I lived such a life,
in the end I have a wonderful wife
and two wonderful children.
My wife told me that before the interview.
That's why I have to say this.
I said, it's been a marvellous life
for me. I hope it continues like this.
ALI SAMI YEN STADIUM
APRIL 2011
All Sami Yen was also demolished.
VICENTE CALDERON STADIUM 2019
Vicente Calderon was demolished.
CAMP NOU STADIUM 2023
Camp Nou was demolished.
But hopefully, the new ones
will be more beautiful.
I hope they will continue
to carry those spirits.
I want a young Turkish player
to come here.
To play like me,
to do even better things for a long time.
To even win the Champions League
with this jersey.
But if you ask about my dream, of course,
I burn with the desire to be a coach
in this stadium one day.
I think we should dream. Dreaming is good.
about to present to the European stage.
In the coming years,
we hope to see him in even better places.
Arda is a true star.
[Arda] If it's about football, I believe
in myself more than anything else.
[fans] Arda Turan, hooray!
Arda Turan, hooray!
[sportscaster] Arda shoots and goal.
Arda is celebrating his goal!
He was a very intelligent player,
and understood what effort was required
10 ARDA T.
MINUTE 21
He's our most experienced player.
He always liked to say,
"Oh, I'm the best player ever."
It's Arda's style.
You have to accept him how he is.
When he arrived, I said this.
I will receive a lot of the ball.
[sportscaster] And Arda Turan...
He was once a famous football player.
[reporter]
Arda Turan was called in for questioning.
Arda made huge mistakes.
Arda Turan's career was ending.
[reporter]
Arda lost 11 million euros in value.
This is when
it will start to go backwards.
[Melih endil] It's a protest
between Arda and the fans.
There's an electricity, a tension.
It was difficult to understand
the reaction shown by his countrymen.
When unexpected things come from those
you regard as you own children.
This is really hard.
[reporter] Arda Turan was expelled
from the national team camp
due to verbal and physical assault.
I will hold each of them accountable.
When interests clash,
people show their true colours.
He goes in recklessly.
It was impossible to stop him.
He's armed and he starts shooting.
[sportscaster]
The last intervention is from Arda.
This is the first time
I'm talking about this, by the way.
[interviewer] Do you regret it?
ARDA TURAN CONFRONTATION
[Asil] Is it this way?
Let's try this way.
Yes, like this. Are they balancing?
They won't.
Let's put it like this.
You said we were gonna be on TV.
[Arda] Wow, look, Icardi scored.
- [Asil] Goal!
- [Arda] Goal!
- Did Galatasaray score five goals?
- [Arda] Yes. It is six now.
- Who scored the goals?
- [Arda] Six plus two?
[Asil] Six plus two.
- [Aslihan] Mathematics?
- Yes.
- Six plus two?
- [Arda growls]
- Look, the Lion King is here.
- [kids chatter]
- Bravo, Asil. Bravo.
- [Asil] It's a goal!
- Catch it!
- [Asil] Now, this is a goal.
Come on. Come on. Come on!
- [Arda] You can't get the ball.
- [Asil] Hey. Come on.
[Arda] I had a great childhood.
People used to park their cars
on one side of the road
and the other side
was left for pedestrians.
Kids used to play football all day long,
with only one post
and they used to have uniforms made
and started a neighbourhood squad.
That kind of wonderful place
was Bayrampaa.
BAYRAMPASA
This is where I've played football
most in my life.
We call it the lower neighbourhood.
When asked we said
we were in the lower neighbourhood.
I played football here
more than anywhere else.
This post right here,
this was a goal post.
You can still see the socket.
It was that old school, kind of thing.
There was a small house
with a garden and wall.
The other goal post was there,
between that car and the three next to it.
We were playing four by four,
five by five matches.
Goal! Goal!
[Yksel] He was a football enthusiast.
Even inside our house,
he was playing football.
He loved football a lot and was watching,
following it closely.
ARDA TURAN'S MOTHER
Of course, we didn't believe that much.
We supported him, we helped him.
[Adnan] "Son," I said, "If you read, I'll
let you play ball. If you don't, I won't."
ARDA TURAN'S FATHER
He said "OK, Dad. I'll go to school.
I'm going to go and I'll play."
In the past, when a football
hit these bars, they would shudder.
Mrs. Remziye would yell at us,
rightfully so, to avoid hitting the bars.
To stop the bars from trembling we used
to get under and hold on like this.
We were small,
so we would easily fit down there.
- Mrs. Remziye, how are you doing?
- I'm good. How are you?
I was just talking about you.
- Remember how we hit your bars?
- That was some noise.
- How are you, son?
- How are you?
- I'm fine. I just arrived.
- Welcome.
[Adnan] They play 11-11.
Wall pass, pass through the walls
of houses. Fights every day.
One day, he came in with broken glasses.
One day, he'd come in
having forgotten his glasses.
One day, the mums of friends would come.
One day, they threw glass at Arda's head.
He still has a scar,
a glass mark on his neck.
I wouldn't say I was angry.
I was a happy child,
but not without anger.
When there was a fight, I fought.
Because back then,
violence was the way to go.
What should I do?
There's a fight in the street.
If there was a fight, we'd fight.
ALTINTEPS SPORTS CLUB
[Arda]
We had three tea houses on our street.
The third one was the meeting place
for the Altntepsi Sports club.
Every afternoon, they had a break.
Everyone watched the games.
Everyone would come out to watch us,
to see us play.
While I was playing
for the Altntepsi youth squad,
lker Akba, Fatih Yayla's coach,
saw me play.
We had a little chat.
He gave me a card and asked me
which club I'd like to play for.
I said I was a Galatasaray fan.
He gave me his card
and I went to Galatasaray youth team.
I needed a consent letter,
but my parents just looked at each other,
because we had no money.
To get a letter of consent, and a medical
report, you had to spend of money.
Now I'll show you the field
where my life changed.
- I even remember where I was standing.
- You were standing right there.
[Yksel] Arda's auditioned.
They said, "Come on, we're trying out."
Everyone came and said, "Number six won.
Number six won."
I was so excited, I felt so bad.
I hugged that gentleman like this.
"He's my son. He's my son."
The late Ahmet Keskinkl came to me.
I'll never forget it.
His voice was just as low.
"Where are you from?" he said.
I said, "I'm from Bayrampaa."
He laughed, "No footballers come
from Bayrampaa."
- [man 1] Over here!
- [man 2] Go deep!
[fans chant] You're yellow and red...
[Arda] I enjoyed being a ball boy
as much as playing.
I was in love with Ali Sami Yen,
the old Ali Sami Yen.
I was in love with the compositions sung.
You're yellow and red
The star of our heart
You're yellow and red
The star of our heart
Be champion, Cimborn, take our lives
Later, transitioning from
ball boy to football player,
I always valued
wearing the Galatasaray jersey.
DIRECTOR OF GALATASARAY SPORTING CLUB ACADEMY
He was very talented and gifted
even at that age.
And his talent was beyond his years.
[Mehmet Demirkol] Arda had a physical
disadvantage in the lower age groups.
But he took it and turned it into
an advantage. He grew taller.
JOURANALISWhen you look at Arda's physiognomy,
legs are short. Buttocks are wide.
He's got a distinctive look. Could you
make a good footballer out of him or not?
He used all these physical disadvantages
to his advantage.
An extraordinary balance.
Keeping the ball
while using his hips well.
So the U21 squad,
which is just below the main squad.
The youth squad is below that.
We were playing for the 14-16.
So, we were three levels below the main
squad in terms of age groups.
Fatih Terim watched us play and invited
four of us to train with the main squad.
I was excited when I saw the Galatasaray
squad that won the UEFA Cup.
It was one of the best five days
of my life,
the day I first trained
with the Galatasaray A team.
There is a fence in Florya.
It's deliberately built.
May the youngsters aspire to come here,
work hard, and earn the jersey here.
From here, you could see a part of
the training ground from the side lines.
It was so magical.
It's just a simple fence, but crossing
from here to there can feel like
ten years, almost a lifetime.
[sportscaster] Arda, wall pass with
Zelenka, it's with Arda again.
Arda shoots and goal!
That age group, yes,
they all got promoted to the A team
and started training with them.
ASSISTANT MANAGER, EYPSPOR
But many were later loaned out,
as is common with many young players.
When he was sent to Manisa
from Galatasaray,
he said, "Dad, I'm not going."
You feel like you're experiencing
a decline.
You feel bad about yourself.
But Manisa embraces me very well.
And it did me a lot of good.
I went from being Arda the youth player,
to Arda the footballer in Manisa.
[sportscaster] Arda crosses it.
Caner hits hard and the second goal!
[Adnan] There was a match
between Manisaspor and Fenerbahe.
A young chap called Arda plays at
right-back and he plays like a winger too.
And it was a match
in which he performed incredibly well.
"At the end of the season...
PRESIDENT, GALATASARAY SC
...get your bag and come to Florya.
Your five-year contract is ready."
Then he came
and signed his contract in blank.
And he started playing for Galatasaray.
THE RISE
[sportscaster] Arda, Arda, Arda,
the goal is empty. Goal and goal.
Galatasaray extends the lead
to four with Arda.
[cheering of crowd]
Magnificent goals from Arda.
We had a game against Mlad Boleslav.
Eric Gerets was looking for a left winger.
He tried me
during one part of the training.
I did well in that limited time.
I scored and set up goals etc.
Galatasaray would earn 15 million euros
if they joined the Champions League.
I was thinking I was a big risk
for a coach
to use a young player in that situation.
But Gerets called me into his office
and told me he would play me.
[sportscaster] And Galatasaray begins
the match. Good luck, Galatasaray!
Pass, back, back to Orhan.
Orhan was about to pass it to me
when it bounced off the grass.
The ball came from the air like this.
Towards my chest.
There's a right-back behind me.
He's over 6'2".
I'm leaning on him. He's coming
to double-team in front of me.
I'm leaning on him. When the ball comes
in, I pop out of the way with my chest.
I get out of the way and start dribbling.
I'll never forget,
Ali Sami Yen went like, "Ooh"!
That was the sound.
That moment in my life,
my football career began.
[sportscaster] Orhan.
Arda, Arda, the goal is empty.
Goal and goal.
And goal, and goal, it's two now.
Arda. He's got the ball.
Inside the penalty area.
- Arda! Here comes the perfect goal.
- [cheering]
Arda! Arda!
Young Arda scores his second
and his team's fourth goal.
- [fan] Turan!
- [crowd] Arda!
- [fan] Turan!
- [crowd] Arda!
- [fan] Turan!
- [crowd] Arda!
[Arda] I was the talk of the country.
And a lot of prophecies about my future
as a footballer started.
He'll be spoiled. He'll be spoiled,
then nothing will happen.
He'll be spoiled, then a great player.
That's what a great player needs.
[sportscaster] Ayhan plays it back,
open position.
Arda in position, shoots, and it's a goal.
Arda's goal and Galatasaray..."
[Arda] It was a period when we felt very
strong in the old Ali Sami Yen stadium.
I had a fantastic season
from start to finish.
UNFORGETTABLE GOALS BY ARDA
TURAN / 2007-2008
[sportscaster] And the 2007-2008 season
champion, dear viewers, is Galatasaray.
UEFA EURO 2008 - AUSTRIA-SWITZERLAND
[reporter] In 2008...
PORTUGAL-TRKYE
GROUP STAGE, GAME 1
Portugal was again our opponent
in the group stage.
Before the match, the coach had
already decided on the squad list,
and I wasn't included.
The coach always said, "The European
Champion is the player's reward."
[reporter] "We lost two-nil to Portugal
in our first match."
A player may be disappointed for
not playing, but trusting the coach
is something else entirely.
Faith Terim instils that trust in you.
Perhaps the tactical changes
he made in the Switzerland match
are changes the need to be analysed
in Turkish football,
lessons that should be taught.
[sportscaster] We're taking a free kick,
Arda hits the post, and the ball rebounds.
Arda is in the open...
I dribbled the ball towards the opponent's
area. It's already the 90+2 minutes.
When I look another touch,
I saw the goal right in front of me.
This is my transition from being an
important player to becoming a star.
[sportscaster] Trkiye wins.
[sportscaster] A name Turkish football is
about to present to the European stage.
Arda is a true star.
Hamit passes the ball
Arda hits the ball and goal!
- Goal! Goal! Goal!
- [cheering]
Arda scored and it's a goal.
Hamit brings the ball,
Arda hits and it's two-one now.
The National Team eliminated
the Czech Republic in a magnificent battle
and secured their place
in the top eight of Europe.
CROATIA-TRKIYE
QUARTER FINAL
[sportscaster] Modri crosses,
it's dangerous, goal position.
[Fatih Terim] We conceded a goal
one minute before the end.
Everyone naturally thinks
that the match and the adventure
in the European Championship
have come to an end.
However, the match went into penalties
in an extraordinary fashion.
I left my players alone for a minute.
After the referee's last whistle
before the penalties.
I said I'll do it. Coach looked at me
and said "You?" I said, "Yes, coach!"
[Fatih Terim]
He always played beyond his age.
He was always one step ahead.
I wasn't surprised
that he wanted to shoot the first penalty.
I went to the spot, lights flashing
everywhere and my cleat got stuck.
When my cleat got stuck,
I thought I couldn't hit properly.
I said, "Arda, do it old street style."
We need to face the reality
that Arda is not a good penalty kicker.
[sportscaster] Arda, come on!
Come on, Arda! Goal!
Arda! Goal! One-nil.
Terrible shot, but the best shot
is the one that ends in a goal.
We took the lead with it.
CROATIA 2 - TRKIYE 4
[sportscaster] It's unbelievable.
we're making the miracle happen.
Our national team
reached the semifinals in Euro 2008.
A simple yellow card in the Croatia match
and I'm out of the semifinals.
Maybe the match of my life.
I really wanted to play
in the Germany match.
Just imagine, one match left,
you became European champion.
You've beaten Germany.
It's done, one match.
In Vienna, at the Olympic Stadium,
you're going to play against Spain.
Anything can happen. Of course, Spain is
a very good team, but anything can happen.
[sportscaster] Millions are watching us,
and we expect good football
in this match as well.
Kazim...
- The ball hits the post, shoot and goal!
- [cheering]
Three players in the box. Rt!
The post is empty
and the ball is in the net.
When you talk about 2008,
people feel proud and recount the success.
But when you delve deeper into 2008,
it brings sadness.
Ask anyone who was involved in 2008,
Tamer, Tuncay.
There were many talented players,
but there was a family.
That was the most important point.
TURKISH NATIONAL SQUAD FOOTBALLER
Both the coach and his team,
and the players,
believed in and embraced each other.
We were this close to the finals.
But life's like this.
That tournament was a wonderful tournament
for Trkiye and for us.
Looking back today, it was one of the
most special teams I've been part of,
one of the happiest moments of my life.
Being with them,
experiencing this success with them,
and all the opportunities
they provided me, especially the coach.
It's not easy to entrust responsibility
to a 21-year-old player, to a kid.
But my teammates, the staff,
everyone treated me like a star
and took care of me
in the best possible way.
That's why the man sitting in front
of you today has a great story,
a significant contribution
from that tournament
- Go, go, go. Go to your father.
- Mom!
- I love you, Daddy. I love you.
- Daddy.
What's that over there?
I love you. I love you.
- Hi, baby. All right, bye.
- I don't think that...
- Bye! See you next time.
- [Arda laughs]
LET THIS DREAM GO ON.
DON'T WAKE ME UP."
The newspaper were there.
Arda opens it and sees himself.
CAPTAIN, TURKISH NATIONAL SQUAD
Arda sees himself all the time.
"Isn't it very good now? How do you feel?"
He said, "Abi, it's very good.
Everything is very good."
I said, "That's it.
This is the maximum a player can reach."
The praise you've received,
the love you've received.
After this, unfortunately,
it will go backwards.
That's what makes us unique.
We lived in front of the whole country.
ARDA TURAN IS FAST OFF THE FIELD AS WELL
Everything has been public for years.
[Funda] The gossip press especially
closely follows the social circle,
private life, family life, possessions,
Cars, watches and art
of successful and talented footballers.
JOURNALISHe has always attracted their interest
for this.
JOURNALISThe media's duty is to present Arda Turan
in all his aspects.
The media is not guilty
for presenting him.
The media exist for this purpose anyway.
Arda Turan knows
that he exists for the media as well.
What did we do when we encountered
a figure like Arda Turan?
We tried to benefit
from everything Arda Turan had,
from his flesh to his milk and wool.
[journalists call out] Arda.
[Fatih Terim]
I made him captain when he was 22.
Perhaps the youngest captain
of Galatasaray in the last 50 years.
He had a very good dialogue
with the other players.
He had a very good dialogue
with the staff.
And I mean, he knew football.
Being the captain of Galatasaray
and wearing the number 10 jersey
is a great honour for me.
I hope from now on, I will try to show
a more exemplary Arda for the team,
working harder than ever
to deserve this jersey and captaincy.
CAPTAIN, GALATASARAY SC
Take the captain's armband
and step onto the field.
It's a very different
because it's also requires leadership.
Someone who can carry that responsibility
and guide his teammates
in the right direction.
Who can establish good relationships
with the coach.
A man who can present well
on and off the field.
Everyone will remember Arda
as a good captain.
I think he made mistakes
from time to time.
I also think he made huge mistakes,
but he did a lot of right things too.
There is no balance for this.
[fans chant]
Take off the jerseys, play naked!
Take off the jerseys, play naked!
Take off the jerseys, play naked!
"ARDA COULDN'T MEETHE EXPECTATIONS."
"THEY DESTROYED ARDA TURAN."
ARDA DIDN'T HEED THE BAN.
HE GOT IN HIS CAR AND LEFT."
ARDA TURAN'S WIFE
A 22-year-old man has been made
the captain of Galatasaray.
He has a lot of weight on his shoulders.
But he wasn't given professional support,
psychological support.
To be captain of a big team, a big brand.
Trkiye's biggest football club,
its responsibility is greater.
Because every step you take,
it's like this.
Every step you take
receives positive or negative criticism.
THE BURDEN WAS TOO HEAVY.
"ARDA TURAN IS THE NEW TARGEAT GALATASARAY."
[sportscaster] Here is the moment
the fight broke out.
He says, "Be a man!"
He's telling him to behave.
Yes, here is Cristian Baroni and Arda.
The argument between
Captain Arda Turan and Caner Erkin
escalated suddenly into a fight.
Caner Erkin was seen with a bleeding lip.
[sportscaster] Nerves are very tense.
Just seven-eight months ago,
teammates who competed together
in the national team jersey
are now unfortunately punching each other.
I agree with people,
but if only they'd see it from my side.
They say I'm a spoiled.
They say I'm a lout.
But the criticism is too harsh.
ARDA DODGED PENALTY, AGAIN
ARDA'S ON THE RUN
I've had so many violent incidents.
I swear to God. I'm ashamed of myself.
I mean, because I was a kid, at the age
of 19, 20, 21, I have a big dreams.
And all those defeats, all those fights,
all those disappointments.
FENERBAHE-GALATASARAY
TURKISH SUPER LEAGUE 2008
[sportscaster]
Arda prepares to take a corner.
The dialogue he had with the assistant
referee. Arda is getting a yellow card.
Fenerbahe four - Galatasaray one.
I was very sad when we lost to Fenerbahe.
I had a bad week.
I switched off the lights...
Of course, with my youth
and the pressure on me,
it wore me out not beating
Fenerbahe for a long time.
It was destroying my psychology.
It's not a good week. I couldn't sleep.
[sportscaster] Arda is down on the ground,
signalling for a substitution.
He's lying outside the field of play,
waiting for medical staff.
Galatasaray are down to ten men.
[Arda]
I'll never forget the day I fell down.
I couldn't breathe. My heart was in
my mouth. In the ambulance and stuff.
I was very scared, I mean,
for upsetting the one I love.
I was admitted to an intensive care unit
because I fainted,
half conscious or something.
My mom came.
Of course, we felt so bad at that moment.
When I saw him there,
I suddenly regretted it and felt sorry.
I wished he wasn't a footballer.
I was a very good Galatasaray player.
Fenerbahe defeats used to ruin me.
I would pass out. I was so
ridiculously upset. So unnecessary.
At the end of the day, it's football.
You represent Galatasaray.
Sometimes like this.
You made a transfer offer to Arda.
I made a very sincere offer to Arda.
I offered him 15 million euros.
- When?
- In 2011
Mr. Aziz is very loyal
Fenerbahe supporter.
I am afraid if I leave him alone with Arda
for 15 to 20 minutes,
Mr. Aziz might become a Galatasaray
supporter, so I don't allow it.
Aziz Yldrm told Arda through an agent
$5 million a year, five years contract.
$25 million.
Arda got $1 million with us at the time.
I told Adnan Sezgin, "I need a copy
of Arda's contract. Bring it in.
Just leave the numbers blank."
I called Arda. I gave him the contract.
He came back and signed the bottom.
But there are no numbers or anything.
It's all blank.
I said, "Why are these empty?
I can't talk numbers. Where you are?"
He said, "I'll accept whatever you write."
So, I made that 1 million into 2 million.
I put the term at five years.
So, out of nowhere, I'm going to get
$5 million. We had to overpay.
Thank you, Aziz Yildirim.
As a result,
the idea of leaving Galatasaray
was never realistic in my heart and soul.
I thought that it would happen one day,
of course,
but the later it happens, the better.
A person does not want to leave
what they love.
Then, after a certain time,
Atltico Madrid made a serious offer.
ARDA TURAN'S AGENThey paid Arda the highest transfer fee
in Turkish history.
It wasn't a small amount.
Arda was injured.
Maybe if he wasn't injured and played,
he could have received more money.
Mr. President Adnan Polat said
he should leave it to the new management.
With the new management,
when coach Fatih arrives,
coach Fatih called me to his house.
I went there.
He said we were going to build a new team.
We'd be successful,
and we should keep going.
- [sportscaster] Ujfalui passes. Baro!
- [cheering]
We beat Liverpool three-nil.
We were on a roll.
We played really good football.
Our squad was ready. Our leader,
our captain was so on the field.
The coach wanted me to stay,
but the management needed money,
and at that time, 12-13 million euros
was a significant amount.
I said if there is a financial need,
I can go to Europe.
As soon as I said that,
very clear answer started coming.
Of course, Arda, you can go.
The reason for Arda's departure
was Galatasaray's financial difficulties
at the time.
It wasn't an easy decision
for him or for me.
It's as if there was a problem between us
and the coach when there was none.
The coach wants me to stay.
I want to play for Galatasaray.
But the conditions...
ARDA TURNED DOWN GALATASARAY'S OFFER
I mean, what should I do?
I've lost 3 million, 4 million euros.
But should I lose 5-6 million euros
in four years?
Do you want me to lose all the time?
Or how about my future?
How about my family?
ARDA TURAN'S BROTHER
He had to leave without immediately.
We didn't even have a moment to be sad,
to think about how much we'd miss him.
"Mummy, I'm going for you. Don't be sad."
I cried a lot there. He cried too.
He said he was going for us.
"I'm going for you. Don't cry after me."
THE STARDOM
[Miguel Angel Gil]
What did I think of Arda?
Arda's talent was the first thing
that caught my attention.
After that,
there was a period at Atltico,
we were experiencing
a significant leap in growth.
We needed talent, so we started evaluating
CEO, ATLTICO MADRID
the market in general
and players in that position.
All the coaches were in agreement
that he was a very good option for us,
and that was the reason for this transfer.
[Pedro Pablo] I helped him a lot. He
had a lot of problems, like the language.
But then
he immediately was ready for anything.
ASSISTANT MANAGER, ATLTICO MADRID
He gave you everything he had.
You borrowed his stuff.
As I adapted,
the team started adapting to me.
Clothes started to change.
Cars started to change.
We started going to restaurants together
and having fun together.
So suddenly, we became very good friends.
We became a very fun team.
I wanted to get to training every day.
I spent time in the changing room.
Playing backgammon with Felipe Luis.
Felipe and I had a great bond.
[Filipe] We always played, backgammon,
tavla, in the dressing room.
And I cannot say that...
ATLTICO MADRID PLAYER
...in the documentary,
but I always win.
And it's too bad
because he play a long time
and he's little short of, you know.
But he always like to say,
"Oh, I'm the best player and everything."
- Oh, Francisco. How are you doing?
- Very good.
We have many memories here, but first of
all, Sandro is a good Atltico Madrid fan,
where I was very happy when I entered
and became close friends with the staff,
where I liked the owner very much.
I love lahmacun.
It doesn't mean
that I won't eat risotto at Ten Con Ten
or duck at a Chinese restaurant.
But who doesn't like lahmacun? So these...
Here you are, sir.
One of the most beautiful risottos
in the world.
Yes. Thank you so much.
Please enjoy.
It's made with these noodles.
I mean, it's made with noodles
and it's entered the risotto world.
It's exclusive to Ten Con Ten.
It's my favourite thing. It's amazing.
You just said, "Coach, you were
bringing lahmacun from Bayrampaa."
Now you're asking the question...
Do you see the perception?
"Coach, we know how close you are
to world cuisines."
I answered the previous question.
Please broadcast this in the documentary.
Manzano was here when I first arrived.
He was very good coach. Maybe it was an
advantage for me to have Manzano first.
Because he was a naive person
with very good human relations
compared to Cholo Simeone.
It was good for me
to spend the first six months with him.
It made it easier for me
to get used to him.
Then, of course, I had to face the reality
of Simeone and Prof Ortega.
[Diego Simeone] And honestly, in the
first match we played against Malaga,
MANAGER, ATLTICO DE MADRID
I saw how high quality he was.
However, he didn't have much impact
in terms of game dynamics.
I thought he could improve
his game dynamics.
He had character. He had personality.
Despite being an intense footballer,
he didn't show it back then.
However, from there on,
he began to identify
with watch the coach and the team wanted.
And during that period, he became
one of the most important footballers
of this era, very intelligent.
[Mehmet Demirkol] He took advantage
of Arda's Spartan side.
Of course, he took advantage
of his talent.
But very talented players
go to very big clubs
and are left out
because they don't fit the system.
It's normal.
Arda was pressured on the one hand
to fit into the system,
on the other hand, he was released.
We have a tense relationship
because of a great love.
Because he pushed me
harder and harder every day.
He did everything every day
to make me a better actor.
He knew where to push my buttons.
But he also knows how to motivate me.
If I was a manager right now,
If I had a player like Arda Turan,
I couldn't use it the way Simeone used it.
Atltico Madrid, a team
that wasn't bothered by its position,
suddenly transform into a squad
that turned every match into a battle...
tightly knit through blood and struggle,
within a culture of fair play,
willing to engage in all aspects
of the game's ugliness and dirtiness,
and emphasizing the importance
of playing together until the end.
FC BARCELONA PLAYER,
CROATIAN NATIONAL SQUAD PLAYER
An amazing team, amazing individual
players like Arda,
but there was really a team.
You can feel that they defend together.
They attack together. They...
Yeah, they have a good atmosphere
in the team. You can feel that.
So I remember when we played against them,
it was feeling like... [exhales]
Again, you have to fight,
so it will be a fight.
[sportscaster] Atltico have beaten
their Spanish Liga rivals.
They are UEFA Europa League winners
once again.
Inspired by Falcao...
CHELSEA-ATLETICO MADRID
UEFA SUPER CUP FINAL 2012
[sportscaster] The Supercopa starts.
Arda Turan hits the ball.
It goes to Radamel, Radamel...
Goal!
Colchoneros will remember this.
If you have iPlus, don't delete this,
because it's a match fans will remember.
ATLETICO MADRID-REAL MADRID
COPA DEL REY FINAL 2013
[Arda] That was the game where
we proved that we can challenge them.
It's a turning point for my hair, too.
- [sportscaster] It's over!
- [cheering]
It's over!
Atltico de Madrid wins the Cup.
Today they flipped the match
after an early goal by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Diego Costa scored. Miranda scored.
Atltico de Madrid
is the champion of Copa del Rey.
[Arda] A fan asked me
if I would cut my hair.
I said I would if we won.
Immediately, Mario is immoral.
He's waiting with a machine.
I like. It's good.
Yeah!
[man] And tomorrow?
[Arda] Hey, let's go, Atltico!
- [footballer] Go for it! Go for it!
- [cheering]
[all yell happily]
[singing]
Arda Turan, Arda Turan, Arda Turan!
Arda Turan, Arda Turan, Arda Turan!
Atltico Madrid celebrates its
championships and success in this square.
What you see behind me is Neptune Square.
There's a walking area around here.
The names of all the players are read out
one by one. And finally, our captain.
He ties the scarf where you can see it
and finishes the celebration.
We used to come this way, so many people,
at the championships,
and the celebration we won.
You couldn't see anybody. When you
looked up, you couldn't see the ground.
The people were like ants.
It was unbelievable,
the Atltico Madrid songs, the flags.
People with their children and husbands
ran towards here when they saw us coming.
We came with 1 million people,
1.5 million people.
[cheering]
But the most important celebration of all
is the La Liga championship.
ATLTICO MADRID-MLAGA
[Okan Turan] We're at the Vicente Calderon
for the Malaga match.
We made a mistake and fell behind one-nil.
Something happened,
and we ended up drawing the match 1-1.
We needed to wait to become champions.
Losing the championship at the Vicente
Calderon felt like something unbearable.
You go there and if you lose,
you give the championship.
You go to Camp Nou and if you lose,
you don't win the championship.
They won't let you go.
They won't let you out.
[Arda] We started well, but in the early
minutes Costa pulled a hamstring.
He had to leave the game.
CAMP NOU CONSTRUCTION SITE
When there were three substitutions,
then, five or ten minutes later,
Fabregas' knee.
It hit the ligament above my pelvic bone
and tore it. I couldn't breathe at all.
I stopped breathing.
And then I looked,
it was stinging, I couldn't move.
I had to leave the game.
I left the game crying my eyes out.
Mister was also crying when I left,
and the guys in the dugout, Costa's too.
Because we had suffered so much
for the championship,
so much blood had been split.
It was a very hard day for us,
you know, for Barcelona,
because we were ahead in the game,
scoring one-nil.
I was on the bench for the match.
I was coming back from injury.
[sportscaster] There goes Gabi, second
post, kicks, goal for Atltico Madrid!
Towards the end of the match,
Atltico equalized and won the League.
In terms of talent,
I think Barcelona had more talent...
FC BARCELONA PLAYER
SPANISH NATIONAL SQUAD PLAYER
...but overall,
Atltico Madrid had everything,
the desire of winning,
the objective, the talent, the sacrifice.
They had actually everything.
And I mean, the merit is here,
to win against Barcelona, Madrid.
I sat on one of the seats
and Costa sat on the seat next to me,
the one like this,
and he put his hand on my shoulder.
We started talking. There's still
30 minutes to go. It's very difficult.
Twenty-five minutes to go.
It is still very difficult.
Fifteen minutes left.
Bara will surely score.
Ten minutes, five minutes.
Three minutes, extra time.
At the end of extra time,
when the ball went to one side,
I'll never forget Simeone did this
to the fourth official.
"We've worked harder than them.
We deserved it more. Finish it."
And when he finished,
in the stadium at that time,
there were close
to a 100,000 Barcelona fans,
and we were a minority of course.
So, there were only
50 or 60 people screaming.
[sportscaster] Atltico Madrid, with Arda
Turan and Costa, are La Liga champions.
They put them to sleep. I mean, they
put them to sleep for the whole match.
I think this is Simeone's
tactical genius at its peak.
So, for us, it's really bad for you
to suffer a draw, right?
To see the last opponent
celebrating the title in your stadium.
No, it wasn't cool at all.
ATLTICO MADRID PLAYER
Going to Neptuno is very special thing.
Winning a championship
with Atltico Madrid
is a very difficult
for an Atltico Madrid fan.
To make history in the world of football,
you need to become a champion.
[Arda] Tarkan's Nutcracker
was famous all over the world.
I also wanted to connect with the people.
And I wanted to put that kiss part
with a million and a half people
at the same time.
I was wearing a Turkish flag.
[indistinct pop music plays]
[UEFA Champions League Anthem" plays]
2014 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL
[Arda] If you were to turn to me
and ask me what you'd like
to go back to in your footballing life,
I'd like those three minutes back,
if we'd won.
We were the best team in the world
at set pieces.
But Sergio Ramos hit it magnificently.
REAL MADRID 4-1 ATLTICO MADRID
A great moments
Atltico Madrid's history.
Even though we lost,
it's one of the greatest moments.
But I come into the dressing room.
I don't want to cry.
I want to be cool and be like,
"Maybe we lost. Maybe we lost."
I walked into the dressing room like this.
David Villa was lying on the floor,
and he was crying his eyes out.
I said, I mean, David's crying.
World Cup, three Champions Leagues.
So at that moment, you realize what you've
done, and nobody can console anybody.
There's sobbing.
There are those who fell against the wall,
those who fell on the floor.
For the first time in my life,
I have been around so many,
God forbid, deaths.
Of course, nothing compares to these.
But what is called a nosebleed
came to me that day.
My nostrils were aching with sadness.
After all, it's a sport.
It's a recreational sport.
You have to have fun and enjoy it.
But I believe a lot in emotions when I do
this sport, when I live this sport.
I've seen emotions tale a team to another
place or take them to the bottom.
That's why it is very important to cry,
laugh, fight,
struggle, hug your teammates.
That day was one of those days.
Winning the Champions League
is probably a very big thing,
because I know from here,
losing the Champions League
is a big thing.
It's a very big thing,
[man] All right, man, if you...
Hello.
We wanted to push you a little bit
this time.
Welcome.
Arda also embodied that "our body"
sentiment, our emotional pride.
We go to Spain. Let's go to Arda's house.
His house was open to everyone.
[Okan Turan] The house was very big.
We used to entertain a lot of guests.
My brother used to rest and sleep
very comfortably.
In the evening, when we were sitting down,
he would ask for permission to sleep.
There is a misconception that something
like this happened in our house.
Arda Turan's house is thought
to be like one of the places you visit
when you go on a touristic trip.
Of course, it's nothing like that.
- [traditional folk music plays]
- [men yell out]
[Arda] It was a very pleasant house
to live in.
It has a small lawn in front.
It had a pool.
There was a basketball court,
table tennis, billiards.
So, you could do many sports
at the same time.
CAPTAIN, GALATASARAY
TURKISH NATIONAL SQUAD PLAYER
This was a very important thing for him.
Arda lived with love and care.
When he was first transferred, all this
mates, his whole family was with him.
They never let him alone.
ARDA TURAN'S FRIEND
I was in the same house in Madrid.
I was in the same house in Barcelona.
There was always a reaction here.
They turned it into Bayrampaa.
What if we hadn't turned it
into Bayrampaa?
What did they expect from us?
Was Bayrampaa a bad thing?
They turned it into Bayrampaa. Too many
groups of friends, too many people.
No matter what profession you do,
life goes on. We only have one life.
We need to do the right things
at the right moments.
I'll never be a 24-25-year-old
Atltico Madrid footballer again.
I'm very happy I went to those dinners
with my friends, or I went on those trips.
Every year he makes these huge dinners
at his house.
He brought everyone,
all the players, all the staff,
the kit men, the physios, everybody.
And he puts like a kebab
and makes this huge dinner a lot of times.
And, you know, the dress room
just loved this guy. Everybody loves him.
[Arda] We go out at night.
I'm back at three. I'm back at two.
Spain also has a long nightlife.
That's true. It's nothing.
They're doing the right thing.
Then we became peasants, too.
We couldn't even see as far as there.
After Aslihan,
we couldn't see there either.
[Aslihan] Wait a minute.
You're the biggest hillbilly.
- We told you.
- You said it.
That's what we said.
It's not that much. It's unbelievable.
After you... Yeah, even from there...
We're making a documentary.
- At least when we're making a documentary.
- Okay, aren't you?
In my experience, in our life,
I've seen what I can call
an "opportunistic entourage."
The people I assess
as the opportunistic entourage.
Arda has always had this thing in
his life. We should have an opinion, too.
We should direct him. We should do it.
You don't exist.
This is our biggest contrast,
our biggest divergence.
It is the most unbalanced issue
and it is always a matter of discussion
in our house.
Let's hope Arda doesn't break up with
me. [laughs]
There are one or two guests
in a footballer's house.
We had 20 people in our house every day.
There'd be a match.
The whole nation would buy tickets.
As a mum, these things made me very angry.
What happened?
No one was there when he went down a bit.
I think we were treated unfairly that day.
Well, we were nervous.
There was a bit we thought
should've been a red card.
But no. You go back
and you're this close to being eliminated.
Despite the old rule of scoring on
opponent's grounds.
So they scored. After half time,
the referee was a lot nicer
towards the Barcelona players
and more distant to us. Stricter.
And that made me furious.
On top of that, Gabi was shown
a red card. In the locker room.
Cholo said, "No one can crush my team, anywhere.
We're not going to lose to them
even if we have ten men.
We'll go down properly if we have to."
After that, they stepped on my feet.
My shoe came off, but the referee said,
"Carry on."
When I saw the shoe,
I threw it at the referee.
I'm glad it didn't hit the target,
God forbid.
Pedro Pablo was also there,
just passing by.
So I asked Pedro to give me my shoe back.
Right after that, Simeone replaced me.
But was I right in my reaction? No.
[Pedro Pablo] As he's a person
with a strong character,
he took off his boot and threw it at the
referee. He was shown a yellow card.
If the referee had seen him,
he could have sent him off.
Arda targeting the referee,
none of us could believe it.
I think it's not more than the fact
that referees can make mistakes,
because they are human, too,
and such behaviour is not appropriate for
their and the club's image, especially.
But at the end of the day, inside him,
I'm sure that he's a very nice guy,
and then, obviously,
you can react in a bad way
if someone is really startling you.
It happened to everyone. It's human.
But when I saw that on the news,
I said, "It's Arda's style."
You have to accept it, how he is,
when he is good or not good.
Gerry is right. They had a very good team,
the best team in the history of the world.
We were doing everything we could
to stop them,
and when I threw my shoe,
nobody avoided me.
Everyone, all my teammates
were there for me.
Sometimes,
you have to stand up to something.
You have to stand up against injustice.
Not the way I did it. But always.
[sportscaster] Arda Turan moving forward.
Rayo's defence is early.
Arda Turan is driving that ball
and dividing the defenders.
Now he's struggling a little...
He turns it away, behind the defence line,
Arda with a header. Arda, one more time.
Goal! Goal! Goal!
Raul Garcia headed the ball down. Arda
shoots. It deflected, and it's a goal!
I think what Arda did there
was very special, very beautiful,
and he said to his manager, Simeone, or
you could ask your teammates over there.
No one can forget Arda.
You can't erase Arda.
He wasn't a legend. He is a legend.
I believe that in the hearts of all those
who lived through that period,
during the years Arda spent with us,
he will always be there.
Because, it's not only a matter of his
talent, or the way he played,
but most of all for the way he was
and the way he is.
We have an interesting relationship.
We both know a lot about each other.
When we met, we both get misty-eyed.
A father and son, brother and brother,
we have a bond between us that a Spaniard
and a Turk could never create.
I wanted to leave the team a year ago.
There were offers from all over Europe.
He asked me to stay another year,
promising to send me to any club
I wanted. He kept his word.
I immediately flew to Barcelona.
I discussed the terms there, reached
an agreement, and then called Arda.
We met at a restaurant,
just when things were going smoothly,
papers fell out of his bag.
I saw the Barcelona crest on the papers.
It was a great offer. I asked what he did.
He said he rejected it.
I said, "This is not enough for you.
I accepted this one.
Arda was surprised, of course.
I said, "Are you out of your mind? What if
they said no? It's Barcelona, damn it."
Then he stood up, walked five-ten meters.
He raised his hands in the air, prayed.
Tears came to his eyes.
I called Miguel to say thank you.
He said, "Arda, calm down. Come to Madrid.
And then we'll sort it out.
Just calm down and leave it to me."
It was election time in Barcelona.
Barcelona had a six month transfer ban.
Arda won't be able to play for six months.
It would be announced after the elections,
15 to 20 days later.
I returned to Trkiye. It was one
of the hardest periods ever for me.
I was going to Barcelona,
but I couldn't tell anyone.
I couldn't even say goodbye properly.
It was summer. It came and went.
It was so hard. I love Atltico Madrid.
They have a special place in my heart,
my teammates there, my managers,
from Manzano to Simeone, their assistants.
When I think about them,
I feel overwhelmed.
The four years I spent there
were spectacular.
For me,
it was one of the most epic squads ever.
We all saw that we could defy the big
clubs with other aspects of football.
Arda Turan,
who's transferred to Barcelona,
went to Spain today
to sign his contract with his new club.
BARCELONA
Silence! Silence!
[anchor] Now it's time for the president
of the management committee, Ramn Adel...
[fans cheering]
When you look at it like this,
it looks very nice.
It's a very beautiful city,
but it's a bit complicated.
It reminds me of a difficult journey.
And when he arrived, I said I'm going
to receive a lot of the ball.
I'll receive a lot of assists,
so, I was very happy with
Arda coming to Barcelona,
because he is an incredible player.
When we signed him, for Barcelona,
we believed that he was the kind of player
that we needed a lot,
because he could give you everything.
Defensive, offensive, talent, goals,
sacrifice, absolutely everything.
[Neymar] We were always together
when he started the games.
He played in midfield. He was a versatile
player in attack or on the wings.
However, when you have a squad
full of great players,
it's always enjoyable to have players
who can play in many positions.
It's always great
to compete for positions.
[newscaster] Vidal.
There's a cross and Arda scores!
Arda Turan scores a spectacular goal.
Two Barcelona players,
now there are three inside the box.
Another chance and he scores!
Arda Turan scores!
86th minute into the game.
Arda with the ball, again, he turns to
the post and... a spectacular goal!
[Fatih Terim] Can you imagine having
Neymar in the position he plays?
Messi there,
and Suarez completing the attacking line.
For his position,
he had to fight the biggest players.
So, it was not easy
to get in this position,
but he was able to fight with them,
you know, to take the place of them.
I had the chance to play
for the greatest team ever.
That was a great life experience.
Working with Luis Enrique taught me
so many things for my managerial career.
Working with Luis Enrique
was like going to college.
The training sessions, and play-by-play
analysis were so good
that he had me thinking
in a different way about football.
[newscaster] Here he comes, Arda Turan,
second goalpost. Goal, goal, goal, goal.
They're pacing firmly towards
the first position. Look. Arda. Goal.
Measured with a precision ruler.
Careful, Bara's coming, second goalpost.
Arda. Hat trick for the Turk.
Another goal for Bara,
scored by Arda Turan,
the third in his card,
and the fourth in...
Apart from the hat tricks I scored,
I scored two goals early
in the Super Cup against Seville.
There were plenty of chances
for the third goal
and I wasted them very easily
in the Super Cup.
Otherwise, I would have scored a hat trick
in the Super Cup final in Barcelona.
[sportscaster 1] Defend whenever you want.
[sportscaster 2] Exactly. Be careful with
that ball, going straight to Arda's boots!
And the ball ends up inside.
Little hope was left for Seville
to qualify for the playoffs.
At the end of the game,
they announced the man of the match.
When they said my name, I turned to Messi
and asked his permission to go up there.
It would be rude to accept that award
while the greatest player ever was there.
But my performance
that day was more than decent.
People I consider in my own mind
to be very important people,
many of them disappointed me when
I met them.
Andres was the opposite.
I admired him even more after I met him.
I still have the Iniesta book on my desk.
I like to see it there.
He is the artist of this game.
I'm very happy that I got to play with
him, shared the same pitch with him.
And most importantly got his respect.
CAPTAIN, FC BARCELONA
SPANISH NATIONAL SQUAD CAPTAIN
For me, Arda has always been
a very complete player...
Uh... very...
technically skilled player,
and, in that sense,
you see that admiration,
that respect he felt for me.
Uh, as I said, for me, well,
sharing training sessions, matches,
and day to day life was really beautiful,
so it was a pleasure to meet him.
In the Giants League,
Barcelona will face Paris Saint-Germain
tonight, after their 4-0 defeat.
Luis Enrique, the manager,
stated that despite the four-nil defeat...
BARCELONA - PSG 8
MARCH 2017
...they would beat them six-nil.
I knew, by the choices he made
during game plan training,
that Luis Enrique wanted me to play.
He was on the fence
about putting me out there.
Then, I was warming up when the score
was three-nil and we conceded a goal.
After the goal, I thought I'm coming on
to replace Iniesta. A great honour.
I said to Leo, "We're on the pitch and we
can change it. We can score three goals.
Let's keep going. Let's keep going."
At that moment,
Arda stepped onto the field in my place,
and I actually think he played
an important role
in securing the comeback.
[sportscaster] Neymar keeps going.
Roberto touches the ball... goal!
A tremendous decision
and with an extraordinary Neymar
who managed to do this...
[sportscaster]
He's there to aid his teammate. Arda.
Pique is right behind him.
Whoops!
What an impossible pass, huh?
- Okay, no...
- No, no, no, no.
[both laugh]
But yeah, I mean, you can see
how talented Arda was.
And it was very difficult to stop him, at
that time when he was at Atltico Madrid.
You enjoyed playing that time, huh?
Ah! I can see you...
How is your Spanish
after so many years in Spain?
[both laugh]
Really bad, really bad, really bad.
How long you've been in Spain?
- Seven and a half years. Six...
- Seven and a half?
And your Spanish...?
[in Spanish] A little, yeah.
How are you? How's it going?
I love you, brother. How's your family?
- Some wine? How about some wine later?
- With a little bit of wine, much better.
[both laugh]
THE HISTORICAL ARDA TURAN BENCH
He put his hands like this.
Arda Turan's bench was found.
LOOKING FOR THE TURAN BENCH
And they say I don't have property
in Barcelona. Here it is.
Hello. I'm Arda Turan.
I'm in Confrontation
on Amazon Prime Video.
There's no story behind the bench.
It's completely improvised.
There's a sushi restaurant
across the street that I love.
My friends, the ones you hear about,
the Bayrampaa gang, or my guests,
would come out here to have a smoke.
I'd give them a piece of my mind because
I was alone at the table, a waste of time.
When I went out with them,
while they were in the smoking area,
I used to sit on this bench
and run my mouth or have a cup of coffee.
That's how this bench became famous.
I can't believe what you're going through.
- I can't believe it either.
- [laughs]
It feels like I actually own this bench.
[chuckles]
Now, you see the guys here.
These are all students. We asked them,
and they asked our teachers
to take them to the Arda Turan bench.
It's not even a pretty bench. [chuckles]
But some people tie ribbons on it.
Like a saint is entombed here.
Really interesting. Strange folk we are.
THE FALL
[sportscaster] Seluk behind the ball.
Seluk shoots and goal!
I was so happy about that goal.
I had no idea the sorrow
it would bring me later.
But I was very happy that day.
We were shedding tears of joy.
[sportscaster] Long distance, oh!
I can't say we played well
in the second half.
We didn't start well, either.
The national squad didn't make a good
start to the Euro 2016 Championship.
There are some serious allegations
about the decline in the national squad.
[sportscaster] As captain, Arda Turan
relays the message to the authorities
that his teammates are asking for
a bonus of 500.000 Euros.
The tournament bonus, which
we did not ask for in the first place,
was an important sum for everyone.
[Caner Erkn] One of the national team
managers called Arda.
EYPSPOR PLAYER
TURKISH NATIONAL SQUAD PLAYER
He said, "We couldn't deposit your bonus,
but I'll try to sort it out today."
I went to the masseur's room that night.
It was Ramadan again.
Some of the staff there had named
their children Arda because of me.
I told him that as he had his bonus, you'd
think he'd buy his captain ice cream.
The guy's face turned pale.
No one said a word. They hadn't been paid.
Now I am the team captain,
I've received my full bonus.
Our employees were supposed to get
a 10% bonus, but they didn't received it.
Volkan en and Cenk, who had the same
play time had received different bonuses.
Burak Yilmaz received none at all.
So, with the utmost respect and manners,
I took this to the coach.
That same board member
talked to Coach Fatih.
Probably told him that he'd spoken
with Arda and told him about...
that he told him
that they'd pay the bonuses today.
Coach Fatih thought
that Arda called the guy.
What happened was not easy. It was hard.
Maybe they could have figured
something out before I was involved.
But despite everything,
because we were in the middle
of the European Championship, um,
some things were beyond repairing.
[sportscaster] Cross, Morata, and goal.
The national squad
lost three-nil against Spain.
The players and coach Fatih Terim
were all criticised harshly by the media.
In international arenas like the European
Football Championship or the World Cup,
especially if you start with a loss,
it becomes hell for national team.
Because that is when
the social lynching begins.
You gave them everything,
but their agenda is money.
You start to look for a scapegoat.
It's either the manager,
or the most prominent figure in the team.
From that point forward,
the gods have spoken.
[sportscaster] There is tension, arguments
and protests between Arda and the fans.
Although, physically, he was on the pitch,
it was like he was somewhere else.
He looked like he wanted to cry
his eyes out, but was unable to do it.
I was really surprised in this moment
about the situation Arda had.
And sometimes I feel a bit like
looking in the mirror.
Uh, when I look this, because sometimes
when you have the feeling
that you are more loved outside
than in your country. This is really hard.
Now, for a player
who had played for a long time in Spain,
it's one thing for Spanish fans
to support him,
and another thing to be booed
in front of Turkish fans,
while you're wearing the national squad
shirt, hurts you. It really hurts you.
Well, for us, for Spain,
as Spaniards, uh...
it was difficult to understand
that reaction
of his own people
or his countrymen towards him.
But, you know, you see him as a colleague,
you see him as a friend,
and, obviously, when a friend of yours...
when things aren't going well
for your friend,
it's obvious that you hurt for him
and, in that sense,
we tried to show him our love.
[Arda] What they did to me that day
was marvellous.
It was when I realized that I had
an impact on Spanish football.
It was really special for me.
Frankly, I was embarrassed for my country.
It was just the second game. We still had
a chance to advance to the next round.
At first, the
Spaniards were silent, surprised.
They tried to understand
what was going on.
Then they rebelled. Okay, we get it. And
this is Arda Turan. They supported him.
But if they were in the same situation,
they would have done the same thing.
So, no national team should be like that.
It's not a losing game. They didn't play.
The person they'd channel their anger at
would be the most prominent figure
Not that he was at fault or anything.
Because he was their greatest star,
who else could they have
held responsible for the situation?
The Arda Turan crisis in the national
squad is also a hot topic.
I'm having trouble
tolerating the national squad,
from the coach to the most feeble player.
Who the hell does he think he is?
The interesting thing about 2016,
I think, was that Fatih Terim
fought the only battle he knew he'd lose.
Coach Fatih is always on top of things.
He boasts that. He's praised for that.
Could we have managed things better?
Perhaps we could have.
Perhaps, when some things come from
the people you love the most,
no matter how much you
try to hide your emotions,
or tell yourself that you shouldn't
give in to your emotions anyway.
You start getting emotional. That happens.
Your son, not your player,
a player you see as a son could do
unexpected things to you
and you start to wonder.
I don't know. I'm not sure,
but it's possible.
When someone has a momentum
in a relationship, it's like a marriage.
Either you have to stand up to it,
to meet somewhere together.
Or someone told me that getting married
is the art of taking it easy.
I think the relationship between
coaches and star players is like that.
There's a place where you have
to take things down a notch.
Both the player and the coach. I think
there's a bit of a lack of humour there.
Especially after the failure
in the European Championship,
the whole country needed a patsy,
um, for that failure.
At least, in sports circles.
Arda was the one
who suffered the most through all that.
There, that team spirit
never quite matched that of 2008.
There could have been
a turning point there.
If we had made it out of the group,
we would have progressed
because the treatment had started.
Do you understand what I'm saying?
But when we were eliminated,
we took sides.
[Mehmet Demirkol] Unfortunately,
there were no winners. We all lost.
Because the media pretended
to cover the story...
and they covered one side of it.
Mostly.
And it was generally Coach Fatih's side.
NATIONAL DISASTER
[Mehmet Arslan] We, as five journalists,
travelled to Paris.
From there, we went to Nice.
They planned to have dinner
with Fatih Terim the day before
or a few days before the match in Nice.
And then they told me
whatever was discussed at dinner.
What was discussed was this. I'm stating
what my friends told me directly.
Burak Yilmaz and Arda Turan cannot wear
the national team jersey anymore.
One, these were the manager's words.
Two, the manager's words, I mean not
himself but someone who was present.
So far, so good,
but the story lacked a third leg
Mehmet Arslan,
why didn't you ask Arda Turan?
Yes, I was talking about the bonuses.
But whose bonuses and for what?
Someone should explain that.
How did this break out?
How did this happen? They can tell you
everything that those executives did.
I felt that I was very unfair to Arda Turan.
Because what I learned in the aftermath
made everything crystal clear.
Arda Turan hadn't asked
for a single penny for himself.
Arda Turan negotiated
to protect the rights of many team staff,
from the equipment manager to the cook,
who served the national team.
At this point, I confess
very clearly and openly. I was used.
It is one of the news stories I regret the
most throughout my journalism career.
I switched off my phone
and went to my mum in Akay.
I kept my phone off for a whole week.
I was so sad.
In the European Championship,
where we got the necessary score
from the Czech Republic,
but we failed to advance
and I became the patsy for the bonuses.
At the cottage for example,
we went there for a walk,
but some kids started coming at us.
"Aren't you ashamed
that you were playing for the money?"
Law enforcement in the area heard about it
and they took the boys in.
Arda told them to let the kids go.
He said, "They are just saying
what they've been hearing."
Today, we fought for our country,
for our jersey and for our honour.
I think we've fulfilled that mission.
That's why I am very happy.
Tomorrow, hopefully, something miraculous
happens and we make it to the Final 16.
We'll see what happens after.
I really think we deserved to be happy
and to celebrate, today.
[reporter] We have footage of you crying.
I tried not to cry. They've already made
my mother cry enough.
But I will hold them accountable.
[reporter]
You were the most hard-working player.
[Arda] God is with me.
[interviewer] The individuals
who will be held accountable,
what kind of plan do you have in mind
regarding holding them accountable?
I told the truth
except for the end of the interview.
But I don't agree
with the accountability thing. It's ugly.
I was very upset about the family
and everything, but it's wrong.
I wouldn't say the same thing again.
HIS ECONOMY
ARDA'S ECONOMY
He made a comment about the stock
market or something. I said, "Why?"
It was like he had a condition where
he comments to every mic in his face.
[interviewer]
Arda Turan evaluated the Turkish economy.
He said, "The Turkish economy is good.
There is fluctuation in the dollar.
I think interest rates should fall,"
I'm fucked. There's nothing to say.
It's just retarded.
So I have an opinion on something
I know nothing about.
It's disgraceful.
There's nothing to say. I'm full of shit.
What am I doing in an interview
with an economic magazine?
They shouldn't have asked me
for that interview.
I did an interview
so I wouldn't offend someone.
The state of the dollar,
blah, blah, blah, I fucked up.
That's what I heard. The economy
wasn't bad then. That's what I said.
So, I'm not very skilled
when it comes to money.
Whatever.
For a strong Trkiye, yes, I'm in.
Dear Arda, are you in, too?
[reporter] Footballer Arda Turan also
immediately shared a video and said yes.
Then he called out to Burak Ylmaz.
Coach Ridvan, I got your call,
I'm in for a stronger Trkiye.
Burak Yilmaz, are you in too, my brother?
It was one 100% unprecedented.
When Coach Rdvan called out to me,
I recorded that while I was travelling.
I accept any criticism about that.
Could I talk about it or discuss it?
You're right about everything. But if
you're going to bash me about saying yes,
that's where I draw the line.
How much investment have we made
in the development of athletes
in our country in every statement?
That we expect Arda Turan to act and speak
as if he were a university graduate
and steer the country in any way
with his attitude, words or acts?
Michael Jordan is still criticised by
Obama for not expressing his opinion.
If they asked for my opinion
on political issues.
That's how I think about those matters.
If saying this in public hurts people,
there's nothing I can do.
I can say I'm sorry, but I've never
criticised any of my friends
who think differently so harshly.
[Mehmet Arslan] In a place like Catalonia,
if you play for a Catalan team
and send a message to Turkish politics,
the Catalans will tear you apart.
When touched by intentions...
good or not so good,
uh, emotions can override logic.
Sometimes, it can lead
to not making the right decisions.
TO HELL WITH MONEY
[reporter] Arda Turan,
captain of the national squad,
is once again in the centre of a scandal.
Team captain Arda Turan made
derogatory remarks towards Bilal Mee,
a columnist for Milliyet newspaper.
The footballer's verbal attack quickly
escalated into a physical altercation.
"That man is probably older
than his father.
What Captain Arda did was wrong.
Since Arda Turan joined Barcelona, his
value has decreased by 11 million euros.
The journalists covering the national
squad are on the same plane as them.
Arda Turan grabs Bilal Mee by the throat
and starts shouting expletives.
And he says he'd, you know, do things
to whoever took him on that plane.
We are the ones
who make the decisions about plane.
It doesn't concern any player,
who we take and who we don't.
I know how much he loves Bilal Abi.
There's a bond between them
beyond their relationship
as journalists and footballer.
Of course, it's not something
anyone would think of.
We didn't seat them together.
There is distance between everyone.
There are sections.
It was all planned beforehand.
[reporter] Sports journalist Bilal Mee
was attacked physically and verbally.
The journalists protested the footballer
and left the room.
When the player started his speech,
reporters left as an act of protest.
I'm not here as captain
of the national squad.
I'm wrong, 100%.
More than being a mistake, it was wrong.
That's for sure.
Even now, I'd like to apologize to Bilal.
It was unnecessary. Do you understand?
I could call Bilal and have a coffee with
him and ask, "You think this is fair?
You're like a father to me.
You think there is truth to this story?"
Look, we served this country
for so long. We did our duty."
I had to deal with it through
another form of communication.
That was a mistake. That was wrong.
This is more than regret. I'm sorry.
This is more important to me. I'm ashamed.
But Bilal is embarrassed too. Believe me.
But Bilal is embarrassed too.
Because he did that to someone
he visited at home and dined with.
He went from being right
to being in the wrong position.
Because you are a national team player,
you are a Galatasaray player,
or Atltico or Barcelona player.
You cannot behave like this.
ARDA TURAN'S UGLY FAREWELL.
ARDA LEFT THE NATIONAL TEAM
CRIME AND PUNISHMENYOU ARE FIRED
"The decision to send is mine.
Clear and definitive."
I think the time has come. I want to thank
everyone I have worked with so far,
my friends, the many people
I've talked to internally, and my family.
My other friends
wanted to leave it with me.
I said it wasn't right.
This is sabotaging the national team.
How can I let it happen?
I was damaging the national team.
I wanted to leave on my own that day.
I realized my teammates were insisting.
[coughs]
There's going to be misunderstanding
in this country.
I told them I'd read it,
and I went downstairs,
but I never thought of reading it.
I decided to quit the national team.
I quit.
It's only after something like that that
they can make peace with Coach Fatih.
After the explosion point.
You explode, you release your energy.
That's how the gods fight.
[woman]
Will Arda Turan leave the Barcelona?
According the Spanish press, yes.
[man] He said, "I'm a child of
Galatasaray. If I return to Trkiye,
you know where to find me.
But I'd like to keep playing in Barcelona
till the end of my football days."
I played a lot
in Luis Enrique's last season.
In the end, I had a good season.
Then came Valverde, a new manager,
but although I was the next highest
scoring player after Messi, Neymar
and Suarez, he didn't pick me
Of course, football is not about goals.
Especially not the first thing
in Barcelona football, I know that.
But he didn't pick me.
We had Luis Suarez, and then Messi,
of course, in the attacking place.
They were... I mean, they scored a lot of
goals, and they were very important to us.
And then from all the other players
that he had, I mean, he had to choose,
Valverde, at that time and... he chose
all the players, rather than him, so...
In a squad of 22, 25 players,
that all of them, they are very talented.
It's always tough, and sometimes maybe,
um, you are not fair
with different players
and maybe that was one
of the situations with Arda.
When you're young, you can do things
that you can't do when you're older.
As you age, you need to pay more
attention, and I didn't do any of these.
I chose to trust my talent,
but it didn't work out. I made a mistake.
Arda could go wherever he wanted.
I mean, he could go wherever he wanted.
I'm not saying Miami or LA Galaxy.
He could've gone to Arsenal.
He could've gone to Chelsea.
He could have gone.
He could have gone to Bayern Munich.
Because at that point in your career,
"I want to play for Barcelona.
If I can't play, I'll go to Baakehir."
No footballer would say that.
He said there were clubs that want me.
I told him,
"Don't ever come back to Trkiye."
I literally begged him.
I told you not to come back.
You'll come back anyway. It doesn't matter
where you go back to. Don't go back.
I told him that I don't find it right
for a player
who plays or can't play in Barcelona
to return to Trkiye.
He said, "Let's part ways."
When I told this to the Barcelona
executives, they were surprised.
Because until that day, no Barcelona
player had ever said they wanted to leave.
What's the mistake?
Getting out
of top-level football so early.
And is it really a mistake?
If you don't have that love left,
you'll get out.
I came back to Trkiye because of my
mother's illness and long-term weariness,
and I thought I was doing harm
to my family, and that's how I decided.
I was worried about what was going on.
I didn't want to lose my loved ones.
Because there were serious illnesses.
Abdullah Avci called.
He really wanted him.
"You have to play, Arda."
He said, "Come here. Play on loan,
then come back."
At that time, Coach Fatih and I did not
see eye to eye at Galatasaray.
And Coach Fatih was at Galatasaray.
So, I guess that's why that didn't happen.
I personally didn't want
to play for Beikta.
We had a lot of talks.
I guess I was too expensive for them,
but I wasn't very interested either.
I couldn't play for a club
other than Galatasaray.
All the offers were for six months.
I hadn't played for six months.
I didn't think six months
was enough to step up my game.
Only Baakehir
had a one and a half year offer.
If we look at it as a team preference,
it's very wrong.
But I'm ending my career
and I want to end it with a good contract.
If that offer is from your hometown,
that's what we call hitting the lottery.
[Mehmet Demirkol] It's a great success for
Baakehir. We should congratulate them.
Arda is remembered by his latest scandals,
but we shouldn't forget what came before.
I'm so happy.
I came with a lot of belief and desire.
I hope that together we will achieve
the goals we share and think about.
The Baakehir experience
was very good for me.
I learned a lot
and they welcomed me very well.
Dear Gksel Gmda
always used to say one thing,
"Arda, you didn't come to Fenerbahe,
Beikta, or anywhere else.
Galatasaray's door is always open to you.
Even at Baakehir,
you can be a Galatasaray fan."
[sportscaster] Arda Turan is on the line.
Arda is on the ground.
The referee says Arda was the last one
to touch the ball.
A red card, a direct one.
Baakehir is down to nine men.
[woman] It's reported that Arda Turan has
been referred to the disciplinary board
due to unsportsmanlike conduct, verbal
abuse, and threats towards the referee.
The strangulation incident, it was a time
when I was under a lot of pressure.
I knew I'd be in a lot of trouble
if we lost in Baakehir,
and there was another responsibility.
I'm very sorry and wrong about that.
It was something I never wanted to do,
but I wasn't myself at that time.
My behaviour was not healthy or right.
But I still think that the penalty
was a very heavy penalty
given to me even for that day,
it was given to my name.
They gave me a 16-match penalty.
What is happening in this country today?
They don't give you a 16-match ban.
They reduced it to eight.
I said this back then.
If they wanted to enforce justice
through me, then be my guest.
Arda is someone
who lives with his emotions.
For him, logic comes after emotions.
First, his emotions lead him
and he hits a wall.
Then when his logic hits a wall,
he says, "I made a mistake."
Therefore, it's his emotions
that manage Arda Turan.
Bara's Arda is facing accusations that
could lead to a Turkish prison sentence.
He was once a famous football player.
Now he is known for something else,
Arda Turan.
[female reporter] The fight
between footballer Arda Turan
and singer Berkay
has been taken to court.
Football player Arda Turan's and singer
Berkay ahin's incident with guns,
which started in Emirgan, Istanbul
and continued in a hospital in Etiler.
Arda had broken Berkay's nose
and during the argument at the hospital
Arda Turan's gun had gone off.
Arda Turan was called in for questioning.
What did you give a statement for?
The allegations are serious.
Pointing a gun, fighting...
[reporter] Arda Turan's football career
is also at stake.
He could be sentenced to up to 11 years
in prison for three different crimes.
If he's convicted for more than two years,
he'll be banned from playing football.
Arda had made the headlines again.
It was a very unfortunate incident.
One night, at a club, he got into a fight.
And it was said that the person he got
into a fight with had harassed his wife.
So, Arda got into a fight
and went to the hospital with his gun.
He fired it. That's how the story went on.
As far as I know,
it was late in the night,
so he hadn't been there
since the beginning of the night.
He's going to nightclub. I was eight
and a half months pregnant at the time.
It was five, or half past five...
I received this call.
She told me something like that.
She told me that my husband abused her.
I told her I'd like to hear the rest of it
from my husband and I hung up.
Arda didn't know until he came home.
He had that fight.
He thinks it was
for a completely different reason.
But Arda didn't know the part
that came to me.
He found out when he came home.
And unfortunately, I was in a bad mood.
When he saw me like that,
I mean, at the point he saw it,
Arda already had a little bit more.
He became impulsive and reacted
by leaving the house.
I couldn't restrain myself.
He couldn't restrain himself either.
They all told me not to go They all stood
in my way. They told me to stop.
I'd go to the hospital over
such an ugly allegation.
He got in the car and drove off. I got in
the car after because I was worried.
I knew which roads he'd take to the
hospital. I knew it he was headed there.
I immediately called a few of my friends,
and he was driving so fast.
I told them to cut in. Just stop him.
Pull a car in front of him.
That's how ridiculous it was.
He was driving like a madman.
I had no idea what would happen next.
We were on our way there for
the wrong reasons. And packed.
[reporter] Arda Turan has been exonerated
from sexual abuse charges,
but sentenced to two years, eight months
and 15 days in prison
for carrying a gun without a permit,
assaulting with a firearm
and deliberate wounding.
I've been charged with assault and battery
and possession of firearms.
And naturally, I'm guilty
of all those charges and I was convicted.
It was wrong of me
to say anything about interest rates.
I was wrong to attack the referee.
But the biggest mistake
I made was not the bar fight.
It was going to the hospital with a gun.
Are you a mafia boss?
What's wrong with you?
What is this power intoxication?
All of these are real, true.
The court has concluded the case.
Arda Turan was sentences to two years,
eight months, and 15 days in prison,
but since the detailed ruling
has been delayed,
Arda Turan won't serve time in prison.
I don't regret it.
- Do you think it was wrong?
- Wrong.
Arda Turan's career was coming to an end.
He wasn't playing at Baakehir anymore.
Arda Turan needed to retire from football
as the Galatasaray Arda Turan.
Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim gave
the green light to Arda Turan's return.
Terim said,
"Arda deserves a second chance."
If you ask whether Arda should end
this football career at Galatasaray,
my vote is in favour of that.
It has always my biggest dream to end
my career at Galatasaray.
I wanted my children to see me retire
in a Galatasaray jersey.
I've always been a Galatasaray fan.
Galatasaray is my family, my hope,
my love. A passion in my life.
Who could say no
to retiring at Galatasaray?
Coach Fatih really went out of his way
to make that happen.
[reporter]
Arda Turan returned to Galatasaray.
I want to say something to Coach Fatih.
I am very happy to reunite
with both my jersey and my club.
He talked with Coach Fatih.
Again, out of love and respect
for Galatasaray,
he signed a, an empty contract.
I said having someone in my team doesn't
mean they have a place in my heart.
That's what I said while I was picking
players for the national squad.
But, you know,
kids make you angry sometimes.
Sometimes they surprise you,
and sometimes they make you emotional.
That guy who came to me,
kissed my hand and hugged me
was the Arda I helped growing up, loved
and who had a place in my heart.
[Arda] I kissed Coach Fatih's hand
in front of all these people.
It is one those moments in life
that I'm proud of.
Coach Fatih did so much for me.
Whatever happens in our lives,
he was always there to hold our hands
and to lead us.
His mission in his second coming to Florya
was different, obviously.
It was more like grooming him
for coaching.
We lost the title
because of really simple mistakes.
We couldn't fix the pitch, and we lost
the championship with just one goal.
Afterwards,
I suffered a very severe injury.
My deltoid ligament tore, and after that,
I could never truly return to football.
[Blent Korkmaz] After retiring football,
being invited back to Atltico Madrid,
and receiving a plaque,
shows what an important mark he left.
Europeans don't only care
about your football.
They care about your character.
And that is what makes a club.
The attitude of the club,
the attitude of the board.
So, they did the right thing.
I hope the same thing happens in Trkiye.
I hope Galatasaray will act that way.
[Arda] Without any farewell,
the things said behind my back
had really bothered me. It upset me.
When we were young, we could handle it.
We could endure it on the road,
but at the end,
after putting in so much effort,
it still bothered me to hear things said
behind my back, so I quietly withdrew.
A NEW BEGINNING
[reporter] Arda Turan,
a prominent name in Turkish football,
is making his debut as a manager.
He signed a deal with Eypspor.
[players chatter]
[players call out]
[Arda] I was grooming myself
for coaching after football.
Coach Kerem was so eager
for me to do that.
He always pushed me.
We discussed how to blend the systems
of Atltico Madrid and Barcelona,
which has always been my dream, and which
training methods to use moving forward.
[players call out]
[Arda] Good old Fatih Kulaksz,
our vice president, I had a meeting.
He said we could meet
after the Gztepe game.
And I asked him how I was supposed to lead
my team if I was scared of Gztepe.
[newscaster] Gztepe secured three points
with Kvasian's goal in the 20th minute.
Eypspor with Arda Turan taking charge,
suffered their second consecutive defeat,
dropping to fourth place with 57 points.
It was the toughest match.
The toughest match, and losing was likely.
I wouldn't have wanted to start my career
with such a match.
But he challenge himself.
He said, "No, I'll go out there."
If adrenaline has fallen into your heart,
if it has become a part of you,
you live with it constantly.
You have no other business.
One period closes, another opens.
We've become a wonderful family,
embarked on a beautiful journey together,
with all its ups and down.
The most important thing for me
is consistency from you every week.
Long-term concentration
is needed for this dream.
I love you all very much. Hopefully,
our journey ends with a championship.
This is beautiful memory
on our road to victory.
Thank you very much. You are very kind.
[players chat and call out]
[Arda] There was the challenge
of this league.
This league has dynamics and differences,
like terms
that emphasize transitioning play.
I was so disturbed
when I heard about those,
because when it comes to football,
I'm an idealist.
I mean, not the dynamics of games,
leagues, sides,
but the dynamics of football.
If you do the right things in football,
I always thought it might be good.
We don't make transfers,
but we use our own analysis room
with technological devices,
improving
our athletic performance department.
Now we are working on improving
our fields and developing our facilities.
I believe in my coaching
and in my myself in this regard.
When I was together with him
in the dressing room,
you can see that he likes
to take care about details.
He was looking to the other side,
to see what happened.
And finally, also,
I think that these big players,
they play at this level
and so many big games.
I think they can give many, many,
back to the players.
[indistinct chattering, laughter]
Because the coach wants to
be very successful,
he wants to get quick results.
EYPSPOR PLAYER
He wants to play better. He could be
dissatisfied even when we played well.
I think the coach can be a little tense,
especially in some specific games.
[in English] To right, to right sometimes.
This side, side...
Run, because spread out there,
everybody's come there.
But everybody goes
to the early, early disposition.
Not... I want run! Run, run!
[in Turkish] I need you right here.
"He's not getting angry at things
he could get angry at right now,
and he's tolerating them."
I think Arda definitely
is gonna be a huge,
best coach in Trkiye,
because he has all this passion.
The way he talks,
he talks with so much passion.
He convinces you of everything.
Well, football has to be
something complete,
something mixed, and in this case
he spent years with Simeone,
so I think he has a very good idea
of how the game's played.
From Simeone,
I learned the importance of defence.
When you still haven't conceded a goal,
you always have a chance to win.
That's why defence is the basis of the
offensive football I'm trying to utilise.
From Luis Enrique,
I learned to always analyse the game
and stick to tactics and systems.
Fatih Terim taught me to be courageous
and not deviate from my own game,
regardless of the opponent,
under the right conditions.
He has to win every match in Trkiye.
Especially when a player like Arda Turan
is appointed as manager.
He has to win every game.
After every game he loses.
He has to face the fact
that he will be criticized more severely
than any other manager in this country.
Well, now he is having a lot of success
as a coach
and I think that he can be
more successful.
Even though he was a guy who understood
the game very much.
He knew how to play well.
I'm sure that he will bring
all this emotional part,
but also all the knowledge
that he has regarding football,
all the experience he has.
He can be a very complete coach.
Inshallah, one day I will become
the head coach of Galatasaray Club.
Inshallah, one day I will also become
coach of Atltico Madrid.
I hope he finishes at the top
of the league, as a champion.
EYPSPOR IS TAKING THE FIELD
FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
[dramatic music plays]
[low chattering]
We love daddy very much.
And we're proud of him.
I love you so much, Daddy.
[indistinct chattering]
It's time to make the dream a reality.
Today, your families said
the most wonderful things.
Go out there and make them happy.
God be with you.
[fans sing] Hooray, hooray, hooray
Hooray, champion Eyp!
Hooray, hooray, hooray, hooray
Champion Eyp!
Hooray, hooray, hooray, hooray...
[sportscaster]
And the match is over, dear viewers.
Eypspor is promoted to the Super League.
They're celebrating their success
and their win.
To win the biggest trophy in Europe
by coaching the teams I played for,
that's my dream.
When I started playing,
I had these dreams back then as well
It may seem irrational now but I'm going
to do that someday, and I believe that.
When you look at the whole thing,
from Arda Turan, who was born in 1987.
The story that has come so far
is a marvellous story for me, for myself.
Could I go through it again?
I think it's very difficult.
Because it would take a lot
of struggle and energy.
But because I lived such a life,
in the end I have a wonderful wife
and two wonderful children.
My wife told me that before the interview.
That's why I have to say this.
I said, it's been a marvellous life
for me. I hope it continues like this.
ALI SAMI YEN STADIUM
APRIL 2011
All Sami Yen was also demolished.
VICENTE CALDERON STADIUM 2019
Vicente Calderon was demolished.
CAMP NOU STADIUM 2023
Camp Nou was demolished.
But hopefully, the new ones
will be more beautiful.
I hope they will continue
to carry those spirits.
I want a young Turkish player
to come here.
To play like me,
to do even better things for a long time.
To even win the Champions League
with this jersey.
But if you ask about my dream, of course,
I burn with the desire to be a coach
in this stadium one day.
I think we should dream. Dreaming is good.
