Colorado Christmas (2023) Movie Script

[holiday music playing]
[Melody] Now I just want you to gently push back up.
We're gonna start with your right hand,
and then we'll do your left hand. Okay?
Ready? Push up. Very good. And now your left.
Really good. Making good progress.
- Alright. Bye Mrs. Parker. - Bye ladies.
- See you next Tuesday. - Okay thank you. Appreciate it.
[music swells and continues]
Hey Jackson.
Hey Pops.
What are you doing out here?
I'm just getting ready to run her out a little bit.
Jackson, I told you a week ago to change that shoe on her rear.
- What are you doing? - Man.
I, I will do that first and then I'll come back out.
I'll see you in a minute.
All right.
You ready? Come on, let's go. Come on. Here we go.
[music continues]
Come on sweetie.
Hi girls.
- Hi Julie. - Hi Julie.
[Julie] How was your day?
It was good. I had, uh, Mrs. Parker today.
She's a sweetheart.
[Melody] How's your promotion going?
It's going great. Other than a little Zoom call fatigue.
It honestly feels like I'm doing less than I was before.
I kind of feel bad about taking the money.
But, not that bad. [laughs]
[laughs]
Hey, listen, there's a new resident in Denver.
He just moved from California.
He's single. He's a doctor. He's kind of cute.
I could watch Katie if you wanted to meet him
for coffee or whatever.
You want me to set it up?
Oh, I, I don't know, Julie.
The last time I went on a date was with Katie's dad.
There's just, there's just too much going on right now.
Are you sure? You never know.
I'll think about it.
Well, you let me know if you change your mind.
I will. Bye Julie.
Bye.
[music fades]
[India] Melody. It's India.
I wanted to touch base with you and just let you know that...
Unfortunately, it's highly unlikely
that we'll get the funding for the music program.
I'm really sorry.
I was really pushing hard for you and you know that
I'd love to bring you on,
but I know you've got some decisions to make,
so I just wanted to keep you in the loop.
Anyway, I'll talk to you soon, okay?
Bye.
[voicemail] Message deleted.
[woman] Hello?
Hey Mom, it's Melody.
Oh, Melody. It's so good to hear your voice. Are you okay?
Anything wrong?
Yeah, no, I'm, I'm fine. I just got home from work.
[Mom] Oh, good.
Listen, I really do wish you'd reconsider coming out.
Um, mom, I...
[Mom] I know the preschool isn't exactly your dream job,
but it'd be steady work,
and your father and I would be happy to watch Katie
during the day.
[Melody] Actually, mom, that's why I'm calling.
I'm thinking about moving back home.
[Mom] Oh, Melody, I'm so happy to hear that.
It really is for the best. Especially for Katie.
[Melody] I think so too.
[Mom] How is she?
[Melody] She's okay.
She's going through a little bit of a rough patch right now.
So, she's got her good days and her bad.
But I think she just...
really misses her dad.
[melancholy piano music playing]
[crickets chirping]
[concert crowd cheering]
- How you feeling darling? - Feeling good.
- Yeah? You ready to kill this? - Shoot, always.
Oh, did you get a look at that crowd?
Beautiful crowd.
Nathan says Albuquerque and Dallas
are already almost sold out.
Looks like another record breaking tour. Johnny baby.
Bring it.
- [man] John. - Yeah?
- You need to call home. - What?
You need to call home right now.
Something happen?
It's your dad, Johnny.
Johnny!
[Pensive acoustic guitar music playing]
[door opens]
- Well, well, well-- - How is he?
He's good. He's resting.
He's in his bed.
[pensive, acoustic guitar music playing]
Hey, Pop.
I'm home.
What happened?
He started staggering.
He tried to say some words but didn't make much sense.
Was he doing anything physical or exerting?
He was feeding the hogs. He likes to do that.
Feeding the hogs? Jackson, what time was that?
Nine AM.
Nine AM? That was 18 hours ago! Why didn't you call me?
I knew you were on tour. I didn't want to bother you.
On tour? Jackson, our dad had a stroke!
He had a "T...I...A...".
A What?
A a transient, aschemic...he had a "mini" stroke.
A "mini" stroke? Like a "mini" heart attack?
That makes it so much better.
It's good to see you too, John.
I'm sorry.
It's okay.
Look, the EMTs checked him out and said he was all stable.
He's just gonna take a little while to get back on his feet.
He has his home healthcare aid coming to check on him tomorrow.
Why don't you go on and get some rest?
That's probably a good idea.
Your room's pretty much the way you left it.
[birds chirping]
Pop. What are you doing up?
Hey Jackson. What's for breakfast?
Pop.
It's...It's John. Are you okay?
John?
Yeah.
[melancholy piano music playing]
- It's good to see you. - My boy's home. How you doing?
When did you get in?
I got in last night.
Ah. I'm sorry about all this.
No, what? Are you doing okay?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm doing better now.
[laughing]
Can I get you some coffee?
Yeah, that would be great.
All right. I'll get you some coffee.
Hey, make sure and use the decaf.
He can't have too much caffeine.
[eggs cracking]
Woah, what's that?
[whisking]
They're called eggs.
You know they make an egg substitute
without all the cholesterol.
Cholesterol?
And bacon? Seriously?
What's wrong with bacon?
He just had a stroke yesterday.
You trying to give him a heart attack too?
I've been eating bacon and eggs for breakfast all my life.
And look where that got you.
Would you look at that?
Been gone for five years and now he's already a culinary expert.
[laughing]
[refrigerator door closes]
Where are you going?
I'm gonna get you some healthy food.
Oh, come on John. Don't ruin breakfast now!
[country music playing]
Well. Hello there.
Maybe you can help me.
This one says low sodium, low cholesterol.
This one says low cholesterol and heart healthy.
What do you think?
You like the heart, don't you?
Katie, there you are! Don't disappear on me like that, okay?
Sorry, mommy.
I'm sorry sir. I hope she wasn't bothering you.
No, not at all. She was actually really helpful.
Uh-huh.
Come on. Stay right where I can see you. Okay.
[Christmas song playing on the radio]
Oh, hi.
Hi.
Do you wanna go ahead? You have less things than I do.
Oh, no, it's no problem.
Are you sure?
Yeah. Okay.
There ought to be a law.
What do you mean?
About playing Christmas music before Thanksgiving.
You don't like Christmas music?
Oh no. I like Christmas music. Just not six weeks of it.
And certainly not whatever this is.
[laughing] So, you don't like country music?
No, I like country music.
I just prefer more of the... traditional stuff.
[laughing] I didn't realize I just met such an authority
on country music.
Well, I have a master's in music theory,
so I like to think I know what I'm talking about.
So she likes Christmas music, but not before Thanksgiving.
She likes country music, but only traditional country music.
And she has a master's in music theory.
And she has to get to work.
Have a nice day.
[radio] That was some Christmas cheer by Johnny Colorado.
And folks, if you're in the Christmas spirit
and I know you are...
[birds chirping]
Hi, may I help... You?
You.
- Uh, y'all know each other? - Yeah.
- Yeah. - No.
Well... we met at the grocery store.
Okay.
I'm Melody.
I'm John.
Oh, you're Major's younger son.
Yeah, he's my dad.
You're the country singer.
[laughing] Yes ma'am. And you're the nurse?
Home health aide.
Home health aide. With a music degree.
Yeah. Uh, question.
Could I have sounded any more
pompous or arrogant earlier today?
I don't know.
Oh my goodness.
It's okay.
No, it's not.
[laughing]
A bird.
A bird? Okay. What else does he have?
A daughter.
- He has a daughter too? - Mm-hmm.
Well, hello again.
Hi.
You're Katie, right?
Yep.
My name's John.
Nice to meet you, John.
Nice to meet you too.
That's the man from the store.
Oh really? Oh, well you know what?
- What? - He's also my son.
- Really? - Yeah, he is.
In fact, he's Jackson's little brother.
- Really? - Uh-huh.
So what's going on?
Just came by to check on you.
Oh, well yeah, I'm getting there.
[laughing] Yeah, I'm getting there.
Katie, do you like horses?
Yes.
Do you wanna go see some?
Yes. Can I go check on the horses?
Well of course you can, princess.
You have a good time now.
Hey, slow down.
[peaceful acoustic guitar music]
My Nana and Papa have horses.
Oh yeah?
Yeah.
Looks like we've got some good looking horses here.
That's Tank. And that's B.B.
This is B.B? Well, can I let you in on a little secret?
What is it?
B.B. And I have been friends a really long time.
You have?
In fact, probably even before you were born.
Before I was born?
[laughing] That's right.
Is he your best friend?
You know, in some ways I think he probably is.
I wish I had a best friend as a horse.
[laughing] Well, it looks like he's your friend too.
I tell you what...you wanna feed him?
I've never fed a horse before.
Well, do you wanna give it a try?
Yeah.
[laughing] All right. Wanna give that to him?
[laughing] Bye Katie.
Bye Princess.
Watch your head. There you go. Clip you in here.
[car door closes]
It's nice to meet you.
Yep, [laughing] Okay. Bye.
Bye now.
[Melancholy acoustic guitar playing]
[India] Melody, I've got great news.
The district came through with the funding
and I met with the board this morning.
It was unanimous.
They wanna bring you back on board.
Call me as soon as you can.
Okay? I am so excited. I'll talk to you soon.
[voicemail] Message deleted.
- Hey kiddo. What's up? - Can't sleep.
No. Are you too excited about tomorrow?
- Can we play this or that? - Sure. Come on up.
[peaceful acoustic guitar music]
- You go first? - You go first.
Okay. Um.
- Whales or elephants? - Elephants.
Okay.
Blueberries or strawberries?
Strawberries.
Waterfalls or shooting stars?
Shooting stars.
Oh, good choice.
[laughing]
Frogs or snakes?
Oh, definitely frogs. [laughing]
Hey kiddo. Can I ask you a question?
Mm-hmm.
How would you like to go see Nana and Papa?
I really miss them.
Yeah? How would you like to see them for a very long time?
Or maybe even live with them?
Would you be there with me?
- Yes, of course. - Then, yeah.
Okay, good.
Get some sleep. Okay.
[birds chirping]
[grunting]
- These going to the shed? - Yep.
Do you need some help?
I ain't needed help for five years.
Don't need none now.
[festive holiday music playing over PA system]
- Hey kiddo. - Mommy.
- Hey Mel. - Hey Sherrie.
Thank you so much for watching her.
Are you kidding? We had such a good time.
Was she good?
They were little angels. Weren't you girls?
Yeah. [laughing]
So what'd you make?
Gingerbread cookies. This is you. This is me.
And this is John.
Wow. That's really good. Emma. That looks wonderful.
Oh, hey.
Emma's having a winter break sleepover in a few weeks
and we'd love it if Katie could come.
Can I? Can I?
- Well, okay, [laughing] - Yay!
That sounds like a date!
I think it is! You ready to go?
Thank you so much for doing all of this.
Of course.
Got it? Okay, I'll get the big one here...
We had so much fun.
We decorated gingerbread cookies
and I told Emma that I fed the horses,
but I don't think she believes me.
You really don't think so?
Did you know that B.B.'s real name is Bumblebee?
No, I didn't know that.
- Guess who told me that? - Who told you?
John.
- Is that so? - Mm-hmm
[Katie] John!
Yeah, I Get it. It was John.
No, mommy. Look. John!
[spaghetti western-style guitar sting playing]
You have got to be kidding me.
[car door opens]
John!
Good morning.
You're Johnny Colorado?
[laughing] I'm actually just John. That is my stage name.
But I thought you already knew that.
No actually,
I had no idea I was in the presence of a super-famous
country music megastar.
Trust me...around here, It's just John [laughing]
Let's go inside.
[instrumental acoustic guitar music playing]
Hey, I'm sorry to interrupt you.
Oh no, you're fine.
I just came here looking for a few things.
I didn't mean to bother you while you're working on
your next number one hit.
[laughing] Hardly. Have a seat.
[guitar music ends]
So, I feel like I should ask you for your autograph.
As long as you promise not to sell it online.
Are you kidding me?
That's the first thing I'm gonna do.
What's it worth?
Probably not as much as I'd like to think.
Hey, listen, you're really good with my pop.
I really appreciate everything you're doing for him.
Well, thank you.
So.
So...?
So what's a girl with a master's in music theory...
doing, helping my old man recover from a stroke?
It's a long story.
[soft guitar music playing]
The short version is,
my dream job was to be a music teacher and I was one.
And then we lost Katie's dad and I became a single mom.
And home healthcare was the only job that allowed me
to take her with me during the day.
So, here I am.
I feel like I had a chance to chase my dreams and I,
oh my God--
What?
Here I am talking to a country music superstar
about chasing dreams.
No. Are you kidding? I think what you've done's amazing.
I have nothing but respect for you.
Oh, come on.
No, seriously.
Like, like my mom, she sacrificed everything for us.
She gave up everything so that I could follow my dreams.
Yeah. What about you?
Did you always want to be a country music singer?
It's all I've ever wanted to be.
For as long as I can remember.
I mean...
it hasn't always been easy.
In fact, a lot of times it's been really hard.
I mean, my relationship with my only brother
isn't exactly what I'd like it to be.
I've missed out on a lot.
So do you have regrets?
I mean, I think everybody does,
but if I could go back...
So if you could go back, would you do it differently?
I would do it differently. I'd go even harder.
I love my family and I love my fans, but at the end of the day,
at the end of every day,
the only person I have to answer to is me. It's my dream.
And if I didn't do everything that I could possibly do
to chase it,
I don't think I could look myself in the eye.
Anyway. Thanks for helping my pop.
[soft acoustic guitar music continues]
[India] This is India Taylor
- Hey India, it's Melody. - [India] Melody!
Hi. How are you?
[Melody] I was calling to see if the offer still stands,
to let you know that,
I would like to take it...
Come on back!
It's all set up for you to start right after winter break.
That's right around the corner. Okay. Sounds good.
And we still have your old curriculum,
so if you want to use that,
you can start there or do whatever you like.
- It's completely up to you. - Okay.
Oh, and you may not know this,
but we have over 100 students who have chosen music
as its first elective.
So you will definitely have your hands full.
Okay. I hope I'm up for the challenge.
Of course you are.
You are the best music teacher this school has ever had.
You are too kind.
You know you are.
Now listen, hang tight, get used to the room.
I'm gonna go get some paperwork. Okay.
Okay.
[soft acoustic guitar music continues]
[crickets chirping]
[car door opens and closes]
There she is. [laughing] Oh, sweetheart.
It's so good to see you.
[soft piano music playing]
How are you?
- Great, how was your drive? - It was long.
- Good to see you. - You too.
Oh, I missed you Mom.
Oh, I love you.
Well, come on. Let's get inside.
Let's get inside. Come on.
We are very thankful and blessed to get to spend this time
with our wonderful daughter and granddaughter.
In your name we pray. Amen.
Amen.
- All right. Who wants Turkey? - I do!
Ooh, let's get you some Turkey.
Hey, put that plate over here. Would you Mel?
[soft piano music continues]
So, listen mom,
I got offered the music teaching position and I accepted it.
- You did? - Yes.
Are you sure this is what you really want to do?
Yes. I um.
You met someone?
No. I mean I did, but not like that. I...
he just...
he really inspired me to follow my dreams.
What's his name?
His name is John.
Well, I wish the best of luck to you and John.
There is no me and John, mom.
There's me, and there's John.
If you say so.
[soft piano music continues]
Hi buddy. Hi. I missed you.
I missed you.
Yeah.
[soft piano music continues]
You ready to go? You wanna give hugs?
- Goodbye kiddo. - Bye dad.
- Love you. - Love you too.
Come back soon, okay?
Yeah.
[smoke alarm beeps loudly]
Dude! What the heck?
I'll get the fire extinguisher.
Don't get the fire extinguisher. You'll just make a bigger mess.
Then how do we put it out?
Just open a window!
[pan clanging]
Oh wow. What happened here?
Jackson lost a fight with the oven.
I was trying to set it for 12 minutes,
but I think I set it for two hours.
And then completely forgot about it!
I was just trying to make cinnamon rolls.
And almost succeeded in burning the whole house down.
Well, I didn't see you in here helping out!
I'm here helping now!
Do you know what this place needs?
A housekeeper?
Some Christmas cheer!
[holiday music playing]
When was the last time you decorated for Christmas?
Uh, it was the year before my mom passed away.
[horse neighing]
- Should we put these on him? - Yeah.
I think he likes it.
I think he does too.
[holiday music continues]
So, she does like Christmas.
Of course I do. I thought I already told you that.
[light switches on]
- It's perfect. - Almost--
[holiday music continues]
How about that one?
Hmm. That one looks a little big.
I don't know if it'll fit in the house,
but I bet there's a perfect one a little further inside.
Okay. Can I help chop it down?
[laughing] Well,
I tell you what, when we find one,
you can be the one to give it the big push at the end
and yell timber.
Like this? Timber!
[laughing] Let's go find one.
[holiday music continues]
That's pretty good.
Thank you. I'm a pretty good artist.
[laughing] Yes you are.
- Yours is good too. - Well, thank you.
I like the decorations.
[laughing] Well thanks. They're horseshoes.
Horseshoes? [laughing]
Yeah, mine's a cowboy Christmas tree.
- That's pretty cool. - [laughing]
[peaceful music playing]
[upbeat acoustic guitar music playing]
That sounds nice.
Yeah, I've been tinkering with it for a while now.
But am I having a hard time getting it sound right.
Sheet music?
Well, I don't have a master's or anything,
but I do write notation for all my music.
I'm impressed.
How are you doing?
I'm doing good.
I just finished Major's PT for the day. He's doing really well.
He's actually ahead of schedule.
That's excellent.
So this must be a change of pace for you.
No jet-setting or screaming fans.
I used to love all that stuff. Honestly, I still do,
but I've mellowed out a lot. I used to be so frantic.
Really?
Yeah. I mean, if I wasn't on stage or booking my next gig
or on a plane somewhere,
I was just so worried that I was missing out on something,
you know?
Must be a guy thing.
I think you might be right.
Younger me would've been stir crazy by now.
But I think I've learned to kind of slow down,
let things be what they're gonna be, you know?
[soft piano music playing]
That's beautiful.
Yeah, it is.
It sounds familiar.
Well, it should. You wrote it.
What? That's my song?
[soft piano and guitar play together]
[music fades]
[laughing]
I had no idea it was a ballad.
I guess maybe I was just trying too hard, or forcing it before.
Well, maybe sometimes we just need to slow down
and let things be whatever they're supposed to be.
[soft acoustic guitar music begins again]
Hello?
How old were you when you learned how to ride horses?
Hmm. Probably about five.
I'm five.
You are? See great minds think alike.
Oh, okay. Thank you.
What's up?
Uh, the car won't be ready until tomorrow.
Well, that's okay. I can give you a ride.
Oh no, you don't have to do that.
- We were just gonna get a lift. - No, no, I'd love to.
- Are you sure? - Yeah.
Do you wanna ride in the truck again?
- Yeah, [laughing] - All right, take that.
Come on, let's go take that inside.
- [Katie] This is cow. - [John] That's cow, okay.
Mm-hmm.
Because he's a cow.
[laughing] Okay.
This is Uni, and this is Unicorn.
This is Beary. He's beary special.
[laughing]
Mom. Can John stay for dinner?
Oh, I don't know. Can John stay over for dinner?
I would love to.
Yay!
[laughing]
[soft guitar and piano music playing]
That's it.
That's it?
Yeah. You won.
- I won? - Yeah. Good job.
[hands slapping]
All right, kiddo, are we ready for bed?
Can we play one more?
Okay. One more, then it's time for bed.
[laughing] All right. You wanna be black or red?
Thanks again for bringing us home today.
Thanks for dinner. Tonight was really fun.
Yeah, it was a lot of fun.
I tell you what, in the morning I'll come get you and Katie.
We'll go get breakfast and I'll take you to get your car.
Is there any point in me trying to say no?
Probably not.
Okay then. I guess I'll see you tomorrow.
Okay. I'll see you tomorrow.
Drive safe now.
Okay. I'll see myself out. Have a good night.
Good night.
[soft music continues]
I could really go for some chocolate right now too.
Should we go get some sometime? Yeah. Good. Hey, all good?
- Yep. All good. - Good.
Ah listen, I wanna say thank you so much for breakfast
and for driving us all over town.
Yeah, it was no problem.
Um, I'd like to repay you somehow.
Oh no, don't worry about it.
No, seriously. Let me take out to dinner. Or..?
Dinner?
Or..?
Are you asking me on a date?
I'm, uh... [laughing]
I'm just kidding. I'd love to go to dinner.
Okay. That was not funny.
It was pretty funny. How's tomorrow?
Yeah, that would be perfect.
Okay, I'll see you tomorrow then.
Okay.
Bye princess.
[soft music continues]
What's wrong, mommy?
Nothing. Just nervous, I guess.
You shouldn't have to be nervous. It's just John.
Yeah, you're right. How do I look?
Good. And you look pretty too.
Oh, thank you sweetie. Love you. You ready to go?
Yeah.
[doorbell rings]
Hey, Julie.
You're Johnny Colorado.
[laughing] It's just John, but it's a pleasure to meet you.
I think I'm gonna go with the truck. [laughing] Okay.
Bye mom. Bye John.
- Bye princess. - Bye honey.
Thank you so much for watching her.
That's Johnny Colorado.
You have a date with Johnny Colorado?
Yes I do. Yes I do.
[Melody] So where are we going?
[John] What are you in the mood for?
[Melody] Nothing special.
[John] Then, I've got the perfect place.
We're going up the mountain.
[Melody] Up the mountain?
[soft music continues]
This is nice.
Yeah, it's a fun little place.
Table for two?
Uh, yes please.
Y'all have a reservation?
Uh, no.
I'm just foolin'. Come here John.
How you been? What you been up to?
Oh, you know, this and that.
I was wondering if we were ever gonna see you
around these parts again.
Come on Uncle Wes.
You know I'll always come see you when I'm in town.
Uh-huh...
And who's this pretty lady?
Uncle Wes, this is Melody. Melody, meet Uncle Wes.
Melody, pleasure to meet you.
Nice to meet you.
I'll give you the best table in the house. Follow me.
So tell me about your Uncle Wes.
I've known Uncle Wes as long as I can remember.
Actually, he's the one that taught Jackson and I
how to rope and ride when we were kids.
He sounds like a really good guy.
He is.
Hi. Sorry to bother you. I'm a huge fan.
Would you mind taking a selfie with me?
Sure.
Thank you.
[laughing] Absolutely.
[country music continues to play in background]
So, I bet you've been up on that stage.
Once or twice.
You're very talented.
Thank you. Despite the comments that you made the day we met.
Oh, okay. Let's, let's not talk about that, alright?
It's okay. It's really not just about talent anyway.
What do you mean?
I'm gonna let you in on a little secret.
Just about any song can become a hit if you hear it enough times.
Really?
Yeah. I mean, think about it. The first time you hear a song,
you might not like it.
The second time it starts to be a little catchy
and by the third time you're singing along to it.
That's the dirty little secret of the music industry.
So you can make any song into a hit country song.
Yeah. Pretty much.
Like?
Oh, I don't know. The Happy Birthday song.
- Okay. Prove it. - [laughing]
Well, I didn't mean--
Well, you're the one who said you can make any song
into a hit country song.
Yeah, but--
Well, yeah, but what?
Put your money where your mouth is Johnny Colorado.
All right. Hey, Dirk, you got room for one more back there?
Yeah. John, come on up.
[restaurant crowd noises]
Happy birthday to you
[crowd applause]
Happy birthday to you
[drums begin to play]
Happy birthday
Happy birthday to you
[band playing along]
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday. Happy birthday
Happy birthday to you
All your friends are here to say
we hope you have a special day
So we're singing you this birthday song
And we're making it up as we go along
Happy birthday to you
[crowd cheers and claps along]
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday, happy birthday
Happy birthday,
Happy birthday,
Happy birthday to you
[music ends, crowd applauds]
Happy birthday!
Oh, it's, it's not--
[applause continues]
[romantic piano music playing]
You're really good with your fans.
I am?
Yeah. I mean,
you don't act all irritated when
everybody's asking you for pictures or autographs.
You treat each one like they're special.
That's because they are.
Are you cold?
No.
I just love it up here this time of year.
I gotta be honest with you,
I was really nervous about tonight.
Nervous. Why?
Because you're a mega superstar.
And I am just a ranch girl from nowhere Colorado.
How am I ever gonna measure up?
Last Thanksgiving,
I had a Turkey sandwich from a convenience store gas station
in a motel room.
Last Christmas,
it was a couple hours of sleep on a bus
on the way to the next gig.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love my life,
but being home for the holidays...nights like tonight,
a girl like you, there's really not much that compares to that.
Come on.
[romantic music continues]
- Hey Julie. - Hey
It's just me.
Uh, yeah, I, I know.
Thank you again so much for watching Katie tonight.
Well, it's late.
Really?
I should probably get Katie to bed.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Take her to bed and I'll go ahead and get the wine
and I'll meet you across the street. Okay?
Um, okay.
Okay.
So you just straight up insulted him and his music
the first time you met him?
Um.
Yeah, sort of.
Wow. I didn't know who he was.
Seriously. Johnny, Colorado. You didn't know who he was?
Um, okay. I'm not "with it" like all you kids now.
You're so not cool.
I know. No, seriously. He is.
He's a really good guy.
- Mm-hmm. - He loves his father.
He's really good with his fans, very respectful.
[soft acoustic guitar music playing]
He really respects me.
And he's amazing with Katie.
She, she absolutely loves him.
Oh my goodness.
What?
- You got it bad. - No, I don't.
I don't got anything.
Hmm.
What?
I just hope you remember the little people when.
You make it big.
You know those ones that we can say, "I knew her when"...
Stop it.
[laughing]
Okay. We're almost there.
- Okay [laughing] - All right, you ready?
I'm not sure.
Open your eyes.
You really shouldn't have [laughing]
You're telling me I have to drive around town
looking like that, and you don't have to?
Well, I got one for me too. [laughing]
Oh wait, that reminds me. Close your eyes.
Okay.
I have something for you too,
but it's not quite as cool as your antlers.
Okay, open your eyes.
It's an all access backstage pass to
any Johnny Colorado show you want to go to.
If you want to come,
because I know how much you love country music.
I would love to. [laughing]
Uh, well, I guess let's make you look as ridiculous as I do.
Be my guest.
[soft acoustic guitar music continues]
[soft acoustic guitar music ends]
Good to see you Johnny.
Good to see you too.
Nathan.
Johnny.
Well, let's go inside.
Cute.
You wanna add more dates to the tour?
I think we need to strike while the iron's still hot.
Call me crazy. But it's the Colorado Christmas tour.
I feel like it should end on Christmas.
I told you he was gonna say that.
Didn't I say he was gonna say that?
Johnny, we've got some real momentum going.
I don't wanna waste it.
I think we should stick with the original plan.
Yeah. Well, the plan changed when you left the tour.
I've seen the numbers, Sierra,
with the dates that we added in Nashville.
We sold even more tickets than we did before.
All the more reason.
When's it enough?
Nathan, could we have a moment please?
Sure.
Ma'am.
I saw your truck. I like the antlers.
Very, uh, whimsical.
So who's the girl?
Melody? She's my dad's home health care aide.
Oh, I think she's a lot more than that.
Is this what you wanted to talk about?
I wanted to talk about us.
It seems what we had meant a whole lot more to me
than it did to you.
Sierra.
Just hear me out.
Look, I know those concert posters don't say
"Sierra Snow featuring Johnny Colorado".
This is your tour.
I'm just along for the ride and I know it.
Sierra, that's not true.
It is true. And you know it.
Look, I don't know how much shelf life I have left.
So every day that you're out here finding yourself or
whatever it is you're doing.
Is another day closer to obsolescence for me.
So just do me a favor and think about the extra dates.
Just think about it.
Okay. I will.
Thank you. Talk to you tomorrow?
Yeah.
Sierra. Where're y'all staying?
In town.
Listen, we've got plenty of room.
Oh no, no honey.
There're far too many people at this party already.
I'll see you tomorrow.
Hey, I'm sorry about that.
No, it's okay.
It's just...
Complicated.
No, no, it's, it's not like that at all. Can we sit down please?
I kinda left everybody hanging on to her
and I need to go back and finish it.
Okay. I get that.
And what about Sierra?
What about Sierra?
Is there something there?
No. No, there's nothing there.
Was there? I mean,
she seems to think there was, maybe.
Oh my goodness. I am, I'm so sorry.
You do not owe me an explanation.
Melody.
I'm, I'm sorry.
It's not like that at all.
I'm gonna go get Katie. We should probably get going.
Melody.
You know, it's, it's fine. It's fine. I'll see you.
I thought about what you said and to be honest,
I didn't think about how this would affect you or Nathan
or even the band.
So...
we can add some dates to the tour and when it's all over,
I'll do whatever I can to make sure that you land on your feet.
That's the Johnny I know.
Do you remember when we met?
I do.
We were electric. Gonna take on the world. Oh.
Oh boy. We sure did. [laughing]
We were young and clueless.
Can we go back to that, Johnny?
Back to when it was just us against the world?
Sierra, we can't go back.
We can only move forward.
You mean move on.
There's something I need to tell you and you need to listen.
We're not the same people we were before.
No.
Whatever it was we thought we had--
- No. - Sierra, please.
Okay, then. Write it down.
What?
I want you to write it down, Mr. Songwriter.
Why?
I want you to write it down and put it in your back pocket.
Because we are going back out on tour.
And you are gonna remember how amazing and
electric and wonderful we are.
And then if you wanna still give it to me,
you can.
Or, you can just tear it up and throw it away.
- Sierra. - Johnny do it.
I'm sorry.
[music intensifies]
[birds chirping]
[pensive music continues]
We go to Nashville tomorrow and we'll be there a couple days.
Then it's on to Dallas, Austin,
and then we're here in Denver on the 23rd.
There's a few more dates in January now,
but I'll be back before you know it.
Okay.
Is there something on your mind?
Can I be honest with you?
Please.
I don't think she's over you.
She'll figure it out.
Have you?
Melody.
I don't know what I'm saying. Go do your thing.
I'm not going anywhere.
I hope not.
[pensive music continues]
Come on Katie.
Hi!
- It's just us, Julie. - I'm just checking my mail.
Bye.
Come on sweetie. Come on.
[crickets chirping]
[pensive music fades out]
Back at it again, huh?
Yeah. Flight leaves first thing in the morning.
All right.
- Well, travel safe. - All right. I will.
Thanks.
You know, I stayed with mom the whole time.
When she was in the hospital. I never left her side.
At the end when she started to fade,
all she asked about was you.
Where's John? When's John coming?
Is is John here?
Man, it's hard to admit,
but that bothered me for a long time.
[soft music playing]
But over time I came to realize she wasn't rebuking me.
She just wanted, she wanted both of us.
She wanted her family.
[soft music continues]
I don't blame you for not being there.
I don't think she did either.
But it don't mean nothing
until you stop blaming yourself.
Be safe.
[soft music fades out]
[melancholy acoustic guitar music playing]
I'd crawl across a thousand miles of desert
on my knees
to spend just an hour
and have you close to me
I'd swim across the deepest sea
through the rising tide and waves
to wrap you in my arms and stay like that for days
I know I'm on the road most the time
And I know I'm missing moments that should be mine
This dream I'm living boy is burning through my days
Still, you're right beside me. You're my Summer golden haze
And I'm gonna lay it on the line
I'm yours. You're mine
[instrumental guitar music continues]
[Katie] Mommy, something's wrong with B.B.
[horse snorts]
He keeps trying to bite his own gut.
You think it's colic?
[horse snorts again]
Yeah, he just wants to lay down and roll.
Yeah, it's bad. If he lays down, he may not get back up.
Doc Thompson's over an hour away.
Do you think I should go get him?
Yeah, I'll stay with B.B.
You're okay. We're gonna get you better.
Okay? We're gonna get you better.
[crickets chirping]
You getting tired, sweetie?
No, I'm fine.
Are you sure? You can go lay down on the couch by the tree.
Okay, mommy.
[crickets chirping louder]
Hello?
[Jackson] It's Jackson. Listen.
The Doc's on the other side of Walnut Canyon
and the highway's shut down because of a rock slide.
So now I have to go all the way around the canyon and back.
It's going to be a while yet.
Okay.
[Jackson] How's B.B. holding up?
He's doing okay.
[Jackson] How about you?
I'll be all right.
[Jackson] All right, well,
I'll get there as soon as I can.
Okay, I'll see you when you get here.
[soft melancholy music playing]
Yeah, I bet your friends are jealous that you're out here
with me while they're all stuck inside all night.
No? Okay.
Maybe not. You know,
when I was a little girl, my parents had horses.
And you know what I learned?
That you should never have just one horse.
You should always have at least two or more.
A horse could never really rest unless they know
there was another one looking out for predators.
You know when, when I learned that,
that's when horses became my favorite animal.
I think horses are amazing.
I think humans could really learn a lot from horses.
You agree with that?
[truck approaching in the distance]
Hang on, B.B. Doc's here!
Come on.
Hey. Hey.
How's B.B.?
He's doing okay.
I tried to keep him up and moving as much as I could.
Well, I think we'll give him some Meloxicam.
That should probably do the trick.
[Melody] All right.
- Kept him upright? - Yes, I did.
You may have just saved his life. You're a lucky boy, B.B.
Thank you so much. Rest up. Thank you.
[soft music playing]
[door closes]
Hey.
Thank you.
Of course.
Where's Katie?
Oh, she's sleeping in John's room.
You should go get some shut-eye.
Hey, listen, if Katie wakes up, I'll keep her entertained.
Thank you.
[sad acoustic guitar music playing]
Melody?
Melody!
[sad music continues]
[Melody] Mom.
[Mom] Melody. What's wrong?
[sad music continues]
Things didn't go the way I expected.
[Mom] Honey. What happened?
Mom. Can I come home?
[Mom] Oh, honey, of course you can.
You can come home whenever you need to.
We'll even come out and get you if you need us to.
Hey, John.
Hey, Pop.
You done with the tour?
Not quite.
Jackson said that Doc Thompson had to come out and see B.B.?
Is that all he said?
He said he was colicky?
Yeah, he was. And it was bad.
Jackson went to get Doc Thompson and uh,
Melody stayed with B.B.
To make sure he was all right. She kept him moving.
The highway up near the canyon was closed.
So Doc didn't get here till morning.
Melody stayed with your horse 'til he got here.
She stayed out with him all night?
All night.
John,
why do you think I still wear this ring?
Huh?
Because you miss mom. She was the love of your life.
Your mom and I started this ranch with nothing.
We sold everything we had...
so we could move up here and buy this place.
And sold her piano.
And then when the ranch was doing well,
bought it back. I know the story, Pop.
Yeah, but you don't know the rest.
Couple of years ago,
I got a phone call from one of the lawyers
wanting some of mom's documents.
So as I was looking through this old box,
I came across a letter. And it was dated the day we moved.
It was from the Houston Symphony,
offering mom the position of Pianist.
Pianist. I never knew that.
She never told me. Heck, she never even told me she applied.
That would've been a dream come true for her.
Yeah. But instead,
she decided to move up here
and spend the rest of her life with me.
That type of sacrifice...of...selflessness
is so rare that when you see it,
it has a profound effect on you.
And I'll tell you something.
The last time I saw anything like that was when I saw
Melody caring for your horse.
I don't know what was said between the two of you.
Pop, Look,
it's none of my business.
It's just that I hope you realize that that girl...
is probably the best thing that's ever happened to you.
Yes.
I loved your mother.
[sentimental music playing]
She was my true love.
But she was also my best friend.
And I miss her.
You can call me sentimental.
I don't believe you get more than one.
Because when you have the best, who cares about the rest?
Now son,
it would be a real shame if you let that one get by.
[sentimental music continues]
All right. You need to get your rest.
You've got a big day tomorrow.
[sentimental music continues]
Ready? All right, let's go.
- Bye ladies. - Bye.
[door closes]
Ready for your sleepover?
Yeah.
[distant highway traffic]
[Sierra] Can we talk?
Sure.
I owe you an apology.
[sentimental music continues]
No Sierra. You don't. We--
Oh, just hear me out before I change my mind.
[sighs]
I haven't been honest with you.
In fact, I'm not sure I ever really have.
[sentimental music continues]
When we first met, it was everything I ever wanted.
I got swept up in it all. The fans, the fame.
You.
But...
I've begun to realize it was never really about us,
or about you.
It was about him.
It was about him and what he could do for me.
And I think you got lost along the way too.
The way you light up when she walks into the room.
That's real.
And as much as it hurts, I don't wanna get in the way of that.
You gave me a chance at the life I've always dreamed of.
I owe you the same.
Thank you.
What time is it?
Oh, just go, you big dummy.
[heavy sigh]
Hi Katie.
Katie, you forgot your bag.
I'll get it. Thank you so much.
- Well, good luck. - We'll be fine.
- I'll call you in the morning. - Sounds good.
- Bye Katie. Love you. - [Katie] Bye mommy.
[car door closes]
[sentimental music continues]
[Radio DJ] The Johnny Colorado Christmas tour
is coming to town.
That's right, fans.
Johnny's performing tonight with Sierra Snow
at the Denver Coliseum.
Now we still have tickets for one lucky caller.
But you've gotta wait until you hear the song.
You know the one, "Some Christmas Cheer"...
[tires squeal, car engine races]
[hopeful music swells]
Excuse me ma'am, what do you need?
Oh, I, uh, I've got this--
[unfolds paper]
Alright, right upstairs to the right.
- Okay. Thank you. - You're welcome ma'am.
You mean to tell me you have no idea where Johnny is?
I really don't.
But he was here before.
He was.
So where is he now?
I'm telling you. I don't know.
This is unbelievable.
Will you just relax? He'll be here.
It's, it's like herding cats. It's like herding cats.
[hopeful music playing]
[doorbell rings]
[hopeful music continues]
- Hi. - Hi.
[music fades out]
I'm sorry. I know I should have called,
but I just kind of wanted to surprise you.
Well, you kind of did.
Look, I'm not crazy about where we left things.
Really, because you sounded pretty clear to me.
Was there more that you wanted to say?
Well, yeah.
That's funny.
Because I thought this pretty much cleared it all up.
You couldn't say this to my face?
Melody. I don't--
Seriously, what did you come here for?
Because this really hurt.
Did you come here to see me cry?
Melody, what is going on here?
I don't know. You tell me. Or you know what? Maybe don't.
Maybe I'm just overreacting over something I thought we had.
Oh, no Melody.
I thought you were different. No, no.
- I thought I was different. - Melody, that wasn't--
But you know what?
I guess I'm just another girl looking for a selfie.
Melody. That was for Sierra.
What?
The note. It was for Sierra. Not you.
You asked me why I came here.
I came here because for the last two weeks
I've been on buses and in hotel rooms
and on stages in three different states,
and all I could think about was when I get to see you again.
I'm here because you're the first girl
in as long as I can remember
who was interested in me as a person
and not some fake country music character.
Heck, when we met, you didn't even know who I was,
and they were playing my song on the radio.
[laughing] You said you weren't gonna talk about that.
You said you weren't gonna cry.
[sentimental, acoustic guitar music playing]
I'm here because I came home last night,
only it didn't feel like home because you weren't there.
This. This feels like home.
So can we just pick up where we left off?
Yes, please.
Oh shoot.
What?
We've got a concert to get to.
What? There's no way. I'm not dressed for one.
Don't worry about it.
You're gonna be in the V.I.P. Suite with Jackson anyway.
V.I.P. Huh? I could get used to this Country star life.
Come on, let's go.
[sentimental music continues]
[Katie] What did you wanna be when you grew up?
[John] I've always wanted to be a country music singer.
[Katie] Really?
[John] Yeah. That's pretty much it.
But you are a country music singer.
[laughing] Well see, I guess it all worked out then.
What do you wanna be?
A cowgirl, so that way I can ride horses.
A cowgirl, huh? Well that sounds like a pretty good thing to be.
And a music teacher.
Really?
Yep. And I wanna be a nurse.
Isn't that what you are, mommy?
Um, well sort of.
Then that's what I wanna be.
[sentimental music fades out]
Cocktail party or camping trip?
Oh, definitely camping trip.
[laughing] Okay.
Um.
[romantic music playing]
Country music or Christmas music?
[laughing] Um, pass.
[laughing] Okay, then I get to go again.
- Okay. - Umm...
scary movie or documentary?
Are you there?
Sure.
Then, scary movie.
Really?
Yeah. That way if I do get scared,
then you can hold my hand and we can cuddle. [laughing]
Good answer.
[laughing] I know, right? Um,
harmony or melody? [laughing]
Definitely, melody.
[laughing] Good answer.
This is the best Christmas Eve ever.
It really is.
I just don't think tonight could get any better.
Is it snowing?
Is it?
John. It's snowing.
And it just got better.
[romantic music ends]
[John] All right. Who wants hot chocolate?
Major? This one's for you.
Thank you, darling.
And this one is for you.
Thank you Melody.
Come on. Have a seat.
- For you. - Thank you.
Well, if y'all don't mind, I would like to make a toast.
Now...
we may not always have been the easiest bunch to get along with,
especially to each other.
But, we're family for good or bad, thick or thin.
Better or worse.
Now, this place has been missing a woman's touch
for quite a while.
Melody...
You and little Katie here. Princess.
You came into our lives.
And you've turned this house and into a home again.
So, this is to you. Part of the family.
Here, here.
To mom, to Melody.
You two would've liked each other.
Yeah. Here, here. [laughing]
Mom, why are you crying?
[laughing] Sweetheart. They're happy tears.
Okay, well, who wants to open up some presents?
I do!
Well, what're we waiting for? Let's go! [laughing]
[hopeful piano music playing]
