Devon (2024) Movie Script
1
(narrator)In 1902,
the asylum opened
promising a new beginning
for the mentally retarded
and mentally ill.
Within days,
the conditions became volatile
with overcrowding.
Bodies began to rot
in their own fecal matter.
Patients were restrained
to their beds
in an effort
to maintain control.
As conditions worsened,
staff reported
that some patients
turned to cannibalism.
In this expose,
we explore the conditions
these children
are forced to live in,
due to the stigma attached
to their condition.
(child sobbing faintly)
(narrator)Most importantly,
we investigate
the most concerning issue
to come out of this facility
in an attempt
to answer the question.
Where are the missing children?
(banging at door)
(teenager 1) Come on!
(teenager 2) They fucking
tortured kids here, bro.
(teenager 1) They're tearing
it down, bro. Relax.
(teenager 1) William, Jared,
Carly, Kat. Help us?
(teenager 2) Oh,
what's this teddy bear?
Aren't these the people names
on the wall?
-(teenager 2) I think so.
-(teenager 1) Why the F--
There's cameras.
(teenager 2) Oh, shit,
yours is on.
-(camera beeps)
-(gasps)
(screams coming from camera)
(teenager 1) Bro, that's fucked.
-(woman whimpering, panting)
-(footsteps approaching)
(teenager 1) Bro, we need to go.
(woman screams) Get out!
(all screaming)
(woman screaming) Get going!
Get out of here!
(woman screams) Get out!
(screams)
(officer) Please state
your name for the record.
(clears throat) Allison.
(sniffles) Allison Roberts.
(officer) Ali, why are you here?
-(shakily) I don't know.
-(officer) You don't know?
How long have you been
down there?
(shakily) I don't know.
(officer) Let's start
from the beginning.
How did you all end up there
in the first place?
(breathes sharply)
All right, y'all, it is the day.
Yes, ma'am. Miss Pam.
So this is the website
that like I sent my stuff into
and we get
a $100,000 cash prize.
But the gag is, we gotta
split it like five ways.
So I only get 20,000,
but it's whatever.
She was born in '86,
so that was like approximately
like 20,000 years ago.
And...
why all of a sudden
are the parents interested
in my girl Devon?
-(mother) What are you doing?
-Huh?
(mother) It's almost noon.
Why are you still sitting here?
Oh... (stutters) No.
I was just about to leave.
(mother) You are not
ready for this.
-Yes, I am.
-(mother) No, no, you're not.
(man clicks tongue)
So, have you spoken
to your dad
since he cut you off?
(Carly) No.
And I'm not going to.
I mean, obviously
he doesn't care about me
since he totally cut me off.
-(Kat) Is that working okay?
-(Elle) I think so.
(Kat) Yeah? How do I look?
(Elle) Great. Like always.
(Kat) You're so sweet.
-(torch clicks)
-This at least works.
-What's that?
-It's... it's just--
I thought you weren't
taking this job.
Well, you know, honey,
we need
the money right now, okay?
It's fine. It's just
a couple of days.
Really? It's fine.
Why you-- you never leave
for a couple days.
-Why are you leaving now?
-(sighs) I know, honey.
I'm not crazy about
the idea either, but it's...
Wait, why did you pick this?
Why... why this one?
Honey, we-- Like I said,
we really need the money.
Seriously. This is gonna
be so easy. I can do this.
This is easy money for us.
Again, I'm not worried
about that money.
I'm worried about you.
I'll be back
before you even know it.
Yes, or no?
I'm gonna say like,
Devon... what's tea?
I'm taking this with me.
You like grandma.
-She sleeps in until like 3:00.
-(laughs)
Well, Miss, I have been sleeping
until 11 o'clock on weekends.
You've been sleeping in too.
I like, literally don't wanna
break it, but oh, well.
Yes?
(man)
No, you look like a disco ball.
(sighs) Okay, well,
I love to sparkle, so I...
-(man) Yeah, no, put it down.
-Okay.
And this?
(man)
That's actually pretty cute.
-You should take that.
-(Carly) Okay.
Devon better have my money.
That's what I'm talking about.
(sighs) I love you.
Take care of yourself.
I love you too.
I'll see you really soon.
-Please be safe.
-I will. I'll be fine.
-The paper.
-Right, right, right.
The... the camera?
-Yes.
-Don't forget the camera.
All right. Okay.
(Elle) I still--
I don't think you should go.
I just-- I-- It's not safe.
It's gonna be okay.
Hey, I promise, okay.
Like I said,
it's going to be fine.
I'm gonna be back
before you know it.
You work on your choreography,
you know.
I know you have
so much potential
and I want to send you
to your dance classes, okay?
-(Elle) Okay.
-(sniffles) Camera.
(sniffles, sighs)
(sniffles)
(car engine humming)
All right. Goodness.
Not me being
in the middle of nowhere.
How am I gonna call someone?
I ain't got no service out here.
Bye, sweetie.
I'll be... I'll be back
before you know it.
(blows kiss)
(exhales softly)
(groans) I'm literally scared.
No, I'm not. Child please.
All right, Devon, we here.
What is this?
(William) I feel like that's
a squirrel, but I also feel like
it could be like Devon's little,
little buddies.
How does this
camera work-- Even work?
Do I? Oh, I can zoom.
Oh, I can zoom. Okay.
Lemme go ahead.
Why am I the first one here
is the question. Y'all fake.
(Jared) Okay. I just need to get
myself together really quick.
So we have the email.
Um, this I guess is...
the map to this place.
Is that-- God, this place
looks like a jail.
How could somebody
send their kid here?
This is awful.
Oh Jesus.
-Oh, sorry.
-(Jared) Hi, Sorry.
-You scared me. Hi.
-(Jared) You scared me too.
-I'm Kat.
-(Jared) Sorry. Jared,
-nice to meet you.
-Nice to meet you.
Ew. Not this girl playing
in the weeds. Hey.
Hey, bitch. I just wanna know
if you're here
for Devon's parents.
I mean, I didn't really see
like a regular entrance,
so I've just kind of been
-running around. Um...
-Yeah.
Sketching myself out
a little bit.
I know, I'm trying to like,
keep calm. Um...
-So do you think I'm gonna--
-So I-- So what are you...
What are you doing here?
Like how are yo-- How did you...
-(Jared) Uh...
-...get involved in all this?
...just looking around
for jobs, I guess.
I came across this thing
and... and it,
you know, it seemed
really, really good for...
-Yeah
-...what they pay.
-What about you?
-(Kat) Um...
I mean, the money ob...
obviously helps. Um, I'm a mom.
-Oh, okay. Right.
-(Kat) They don't tell you
how expensive kids are
until you have them.
Yeah. I... I live with my mom.
-Do you?
-I've put her through the ringer
-a few times.
-Are you... are you guys close?
Yeah. It's a tough, uh,
story, but you know.
-(Kat) Okay.
-Yeah. We're... we're close now.
-We're doing pretty good.
-Good, good, good.
Wait, why am I chasing
literally a stranger?
(sighs) Um. Yeah, I think
if we just kind of...
-stay together.
-Yeah, definitely.
That's probably the best bet,
'cause I feel like
if we separate at any point,
like we're not gonna be able
to find each other again.
Yeah. You can be my mom today.
Yeah! I would love
to be your mom today.
-(Jared) What's your name again?
-(Kat) Kat.
-Jared.
-(Jared) Jared.
Nice to meet you,
new son. (laughs)
Oh, Jesus.
See, I didn't sign up
for all this.
(both scream)
Jesus, you can't be
running up on folk.
What's wrong with you,
are you here
-for the thing?
-To find Devon? Yeah, of course.
Ugh. Okay.
Well, I don't know.
I just saw some--
This bitch in this
like all white look,
but she was like doing the most.
(Kat) Would you mind--
can you hold this for a sec...
-(Jared) Yeah, no problem.
-...'cause I feel like...
honestly, I didn't even
get a chance
to look at this map yet.
I don't even know
this girl's last name.
-(Jared) It's crazy out here
-Like I meant to.
Did you get a map?
(Jared) Yeah, it's in my bag.
I... I looked at it,
but honestly, this place
is so huge. I couldn't
even tell where to start.
I feel like
the directions were--
Okay, here we go.
The directions were very vague.
(officer) Why did you have
video cameras?
(clicks tongue)
Whoever ran the online site
they sent them to us. We...
They just came in the mail.
(indistinct chatter)
-(Jared) That's all I know is--
-How old would she be now?
-She went missing--
-Twenty years ago?
-(Kat) Twenty years ago.
-Twenty years ago.
-So...
-(Kat) She was what? Lemme...
She didn't even say
in the email how old--
I mean, she looks young.
So she'd probably
be what? Like...
-(sighs)
-(Jared) I mean, I don't think
-we're--
-She'd be like middle age now.
(Jared) I don't think
we're looking for like a person.
-You know what I mean?
-I Know. I mean, I--
-Yeah, I know.
-(twigs crack)
I just like to be able
to hold back.
(Jared) I know.
I think the parents assume
she's dead by now.
They just want to see if they
missed any clues or something.
(Kat) Okay.
(Jared grunts) Let see
what's in there.
(Kat) If you're brave enough
to stick your hand in there
Oh, okay. It's like...
-(Jared) You got it.
-(Kat) It's a hallway.
This is a better way to do it.
'cause I can't really stick
my hand in there.
-(object thuds)
-(Jared) Wait. (shushes)
(Kat) Do you hear something?
Dude, that was scary.
Yeah, just-- I'm gonna
step back for a second.
I'm so scared
to stick my hand in there.
-(loud thud)
-Oh Jesus Christ.
(Jared) Okay uh...
(Kat) Okay.
I'm gonna follow-- So...
(Jared)
Weren't we supposed to meet up
-with some other people anyway?
-(Kat) Yeah.
So like, why are you even here?
(Carly) I don't really wanna
talk about it,
but I could really
use the money.
My dad cut me off.
So I'm just trying
to find info on this girl.
Get my money
and leave this place.
(chuckles) Okay.
So you do wanna talk about it?
(Carly) I need
to prove to my dad
that I can do things
without his help.
(William) You don't have to
prove shit to nobody. (chuckles)
-(Carly) Who are these two?
-(William) I dunno. Hello?
-Oh, Hi.
-(Kat) Hi.
(William) Are y'all here
for the--
Are y'all here for Devon?
-(William) Mm-hmm.
-Okay, cool.
-Yeah.
-Uh, I'm Jared.
-Nice to meet you
-William.
-Kat. Sorry...
-Carly.
-...it's weird with the camera.
-(William) I know, the camera.
Kat. Nice to meet you.
We couldn't really
find a way in.
We were just kind of--
Have you guys seen anything?
-(William) Nope. I didn't see.
-We came from that way.
Everything seemed locked up.
Any window that was open,
there was bars on it.
Right. They gave us
literally zero instructions,
-so I don't know.
-Which way did you come from?
-We came over here.
-(William) That way.
(Kat) And there was
no way to get in.
-(William) Nope. So...
-(Kat) All right.
...do you guys think like,
we'll find anything or...
I mean, I hope to find
something for this girl.
(William) For the--
And this check.
-I mean...
-Let's not forget the check.
-Period. (laughs)
-(Jared) Yeah.
That's the most
important thing. So...
Well, if I was
that girl's parents,
I would hope
that everyone here would be...
(sighs) ...here to find
anything about Devon, but...
-Oh.
-(Kat sighs) That's fine. Um.
-(William) Okay.
-(Jared) Um...
We'll make it work. Um...
I mean-- I think we're...
waiting for one
other person, aren't we?
-(Jared) Oh
-I guess,
but they could
be already inside.
-(Kat) Yeah.
-So... Listen, let's just start.
we talk... we talking too much.
I feel like, let's just
go this way.
I haven't been this way.
Y'all haven't been this way.
So let's just go that way.
(Kat) Maybe that other person
knows how to get in.
-Right?
-Or maybe they're over there.
-(Jared) Why don't we just go.
-Kat?
-(Jared) Okay, yeah.
-(Kat) Okay, yeah.
-Perfect. Onward.
-(Jared) All right.
-Y'all walking mad slow.
-(Kat) Okay.
We already went this way,
didn't we?
Yeah.
(William) Look who was right.
-Hey.
-Hello. You're late. (chuckles)
Yeah. Um, I caught
some car troubles,
-a ways back.
-Not car troubles.
-(Alison) Yeah, but...
-Shit happens
...it's all good. I'm, um...
-I'm Allie
-Carly.
-Kat.
-Jared.
William.
(officer) Did you know them
before this?
(shakily) No.
(officer) How did you meet?
(shakily) Online.
-
-(Alison) All right.
(William) This looks like
a tunnel to-- (exclaims)
-See... These bugs.
-Go ahead.
-(leaves crunching)
-(indistinct chatter)
Is it unlocked?
It is. I mean, I don't--
I'm not trying to go first.
I'm not going first.
I'm gonna put
the camera right inside.
-(door creaking)
-(Carly) Come on, push. (laughs)
(footsteps rustling)
(indistinct chatter)
(William) Like... So...
All right.
-(door slams)
-(screaming)
-(Kat) Oh. My. God.
-(William) Oh, Shit.
(Jared) Chill out,
chill out. chill out.
-(Carly) Chill out?
-(Jared) It's fine. It's fine.
Right. (chuckles nervously)
What is chill out?
-I don't understand.
-Okay.
(metal creaking)
-Oh, come on. Are you serious?
-(William) Stop playing.
I'm not playing. I can't--
-Seriously, can't get it
-No...
Open it, Jared.
-Here. Hold this.
-It's stuck! I can't open it.
(Carly) Will, you try.
(William) Are you
literally stupid?
-Why would I be-- No.
-(Kat) Here you get over here.
-(Kat) Ready?
-Ready. One. Two. Three
-(screams) Fuck!
-(William) Oh, hell no.
(indistinct chatter)
-(Jared) Relax. Relax. Relax.
-(Alison) Listen. Relax. Relax.
It's an old building.
(William) All right,
well let's move forward then.
(officer) So you walk in,
the door gets slammed,
then you're stuck?
(sobs) Yes.
We tried to get out. But...
(officer) Who slammed the door?
I don't know.
(Kat) I told my daughter
I would call her
when I first got here.
I did not have any service.
I don't know.
Do you have service?
Like look, nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
That sucks.
I mean, maybe in another
part of the building,
but it really kinda sucks that
there is literally no service.
(indistinct chatter)
(Kat) Nothing.
Nothing.
I'm going to try calling.
You don't have
any service either?
(Jared) Mm-hm.
(Alison) All right. Well, maybe
we just keep moving. All right?
(Kat) Yeah, maybe, yeah.
(Alison) If we get closer
to an exit.
(Kat) Yeah, yeah, 'cause...
Yeah, okay.
Worth a shot, I guess.
Maybe I'll just turn mine off,
to like conserve battery.
(officer) Why wouldn't you try
to leave? Why would you stay?
We tried. We couldn't get out.
Don't you get it?
There's no way out.
There's no way out.
(Jared) A little bit of mold,
but...
-I don't know.
-(Carly) Devon... look!
(Jared) So what exactly are we
supposed to be looking for?
(Carly) Okay?
-Okay. Well that's a clue.
-(Carly) We know she was here.
-So, we should be getting this.
-I mean...
That's not a common spelling
of that name, right?
(William) I thought it
was Devon when I first saw it.
(indistinct chatter)
(William) That literally smells
like armpits.
(Alison) Oh, God.
I mean, for where we are.
(indistinct chatter)
-God, there are all these beds--
-Oh, my God.
-Wait.
-Wait.
-(indistinct sound)
-Why are, there--
(Kat) What was that?
-(Alison) Did you hear that?
-(Carly) Woah.
(Jared) Here, you can
stick close by me.
(Kat) Woah.
(Jared) All right, we need
to figure out what we're doing,
'cause I don't know
how long I can be in here.
(indistinct chatter)
-(loud bang)
-(all scream)
(William) Oh shit! Oh,
uh-uh. No, ma'am.
-(Jared) Oh, no...
-(Alison) It's all right.
I am getting, like--
look at this.
-I'm getting crazy goosebumps.
-(William) No, same.
-(Jared) All right, hold on.
-(Carly) Yeah, I see.
-(Carly) And what animal...
-(Jared shushing)
-...do you guys think that is.
-(William) That's literally
-what I'm saying.
-(Jared) Hello!
I don't know. I mean, my--
This is my thought, right?
That somebody is like in here
with us and I don't know
if it's safe right now.
So I don't know
if we should just leave.
-(thuds)
-(all scream)
-(Alison) We can't leave.
-(Kat) Well, I mean just like--
All right, let's just
keep our heads. All right?
(William) Absolutely.
(Alison) We're not gonna
find out anything
just standing here guys.
(Carly) I'm not
going first. So...
(Alison) I say we keep
moving forward.
Why do I have to be
the brave one? You come with me.
(William) I can be second,
but I'll be a close second.
-(Kat) Did you push it?
-(Jared) Yeah.
Oh. Hell no, dude.
(Carly) Is there somebody
out there?
-Jared, you go.
-(William) Right, I vote Jared.
(Kat) You know what?
Somebody needs to be brave.
(Jared)
Maybe we should think about--
Maybe there are like,
bums living here or--
But also we're looking
for clues for Devon. Like...
-(Carly) Well, Devon's family.
-(William) So...
(Jared sighs) All right.
(Kat) I...
-(Carly) What was that?
-(Kat) Just...
-(William) Where--
-(Kat) I just saw somebody.
Why is there--
Okay, do you see that?
(William) What?
(Kat) There's a--
I'm not going crazy.
There was a light in that room.
I swear I saw somebody's hand.
I don't want to go
over there though.
I don't feel like safe.
(William) Oh, no.
-(thudding)
-(all scream)
(William) Uh-uh.
(Jared) All right, guys.
It's an old building,
it's probably just something
breaking or falling, come on.
(Carly) You're the one
that's bugging out.
(William) All right, y'all can't
be doing all this stuff.
(indistinct chatter)
(Jared) I can't see anything.
We only have these lights
but it's so deep
and dark. I'm sorry.
What the fuck are we doing here?
(William) What are these words?
We should be looking at
these words. They're like clues.
Why are some of
the names crossed out?
(Kat) Okay,
there's either an animal
or something back there.
And I don't know if it's safe.
-Should, we just...
-(indistinct chatter)
(Alison) It's probably
animals guys.
(William) What's going on
under there?
I feel like under there,
under that thing.
(girl moans)
(Jared) I think we need
to look somewhere else.
(Alison) Let's just
move forward.
Where?
-(camera beeps)
-Fucking battery.
(Jared) Uh, no.
I think the absolute fuck not.
-(all gasp)
-(Jared) Aw, man. Dude.
-(thudding)
-(all scream)
-(Jared) Hello?
-(all scream)
-(William) Devon, relax.
-All right. That was--
That was--
There's someone in there.
(Kat) I know. Sorry.
-(William) I mean, I don't know.
-(Carly) I'm sorry.
Do you see the glass?
(indistinct chatter)
(officer) How did you know where
to go once you were inside?
How did you know what
you were looking for?
On the map...
There was writing
and Devon's name
with like a star on it. So...
we went there
after the door closed and...
-(William) This good?
-(Jared) Yeah.
Let's just set up
a base camp here.
(indistinct chatter)
(Jared) Everyone on board?
Come on, let's move these beds.
Are these the only ones?
(Alison) We just thought
that maybe
something would be there
if it's where she was. Right?
(officer) So that's why
you thought you should...
stay in that area?
Because you saw Devon's name
on the wall?
(William) Right,
Let's just talk about our--
-Let's talk about our game plan.
-Okay? Yeah.
(Alison) Do you all
have lanterns?
We should probably
take those out.
We found what we could, just...
just to make it
through the night. All right.
(indistinct chatter)
(Carly) I don't know, guys.
I feel like we're searching
for the impossible here.
We're not gonna find
anything on Devon.
-I don't know.
-I mean, I think we will.
I think we should just pretend
and get some footage
and get out of here.
You know what? I like that idea.
-Wait. No, no, no.
-I'm down with that.
-Okay, wait...
-Let's find answers guys.
Wait, wait. Let me guess.
Let me guess.
You're not a mom, are you?
-Oh?
-(Carly) No,
I mean, okay.
Of course you're not,
because you can't even
put yourself in the mindset
of what it would be like to have
a child that goes missing.
I mean, this family--
Think about it.
This family is paying us
to stay in this place and try
to find any clue about Devon.
-I mean, I just...
-(Carly) You're right.
...don't think we should
disrespect them. That's all.
I'm sorry I got
like heated. It's just...
-(Jared) Yeah, I mean...
-I'm a mom.
I mean at least we're getting
like, help out, you know?
I mean, I feel kind of good
about being able to come in here
and do something
for once, you know?
Exactly. And like you said,
they're paying us.
-Yeah.
-So as long as we...
I mean, they're desperate.
...do our best, but...
Well, other than like,
the check, what made you all
want to do it, I mean,
I understand you're a mom.
-I think we got that.
-(both laugh)
Um, but like,
I don't know your story.
I would love to know your story.
And I don't really know
too much about you.
-So what's the tea?
-Well, let's start with you.
(William) Mm-hmm.
Well, I still live at home
with my parents.
And they just cut me off.
And so it's kind
of my first time like
being alone and working.
So I just like,
I really need the money.
(William) Mm. I feel that.
So... I don't know,
though, like...
I know what it's like to like,
not really have your parents
like care.
And I just feel like
why would Devon's parents
leave her here, you know?
They just now
wanna find answers.
That's what I also thought too.
Like all of a sudden
20 years later
now they want to be like,
"Oh, let me find..." What?
Like, what happened
all those 20 years.
Why were they not searching?
Like...
Well, you never know
what parents are going through
-with their kids, right?
-(scoffs)
-Yeah. That's true.
-I mean, I know I put my mom
through it for sure.
Yeah, I'm... I'm...
I'm kind of new into this
clean and sober lifestyle
-and, um...
-Congrats.
Thank you. Um, and I don't know,
I guess I just kind of
thought that maybe
this will be a nice way
to show my mom that I'm
able to take care of myself
and I can also pay her
back for all the times
that she's taken care of me.
So... I don't know.
What about you?
Why are you here?
(scoffs) I mean, what--
I don't have as much
of a sad story to be honest.
I just literally love money.
But no, really, I mean, I was
bartending and waiting tables
and I'm just tired of taking
other people's orders.
So, we all win.
I don't think we ever heard
why you're here.
-Oh. (chuckles)
-(tense music playing)
I think I have like a personal
connection to Devon's story.
Uh...
There's this thing
that's always nagged at me.
Almost like tormented me.
And Devon's story,
this place, finding her.
Like, maybe it'll
give me the answers
that I've been looking
for all these years.
And I can sleep again, you know.
-(Jared) Well...
-(William) Interesting.
(tense music concludes)
I'm gonna check out
some of these walls.
(Carly) Can I come?
Uh, yeah.
(Jared) Isn't this crazy?
(Carly) Yeah. It kind of
messes with me.
-The kids look so cute, and...
-(Jared) Yeah.
God, I don't even know
what I'm doing here.
It's a little...
it's kind of like weird,
you know, to open up
in front of people,
but I don't feel like...
I don't know, I feel like
we didn't really get
to know you. Like, I feel like--
I've been thinking
the same thing the whole time.
You seem very interesting
to me. Here, scoot over.
We need this tea because,
as far as I'm concerned...
-(tense music resumes)
-(indistinct chatter)
I haven't felt a rush
like this in a while.
-Trying to chase another high?
-Yeah.
You don't have to give us
your life story or anything,
-but I feel like-- (laughs)
-(William) Or you do. But...
I feel like we all kind
of like know
why each of us is here.
Like, I mean, like he said
a million times.
-Like, I'm mom.
-(William) She's a mom.
-We know. She's the mom.
-(Kat laughs)
That's like-- But I mean,
like, what...
what brought-- Like, why
do you think they picked you?
Like, what did you write
in your thing?
-You know what I'm saying?
-Yeah, what did you say?
-Yeah, what did you say?
-I only did one paragraph.
-'Cause I'm trying...
-I mean, I just--
...to figure out why they're
picking who they're picking.
I don't wanna get involved
in all that.
-(Carly) Yeah.
-Let's go find Devon's room.
Okay.
What are you gonna do
with the money?
Uh...
Like, what's
your first purchase gonna be?
I, um...
(Kat) I mean that's not
like part of it.
That's like--
But, I mean like, what...
what brought-- Like, why
do you think they picked you?
Like what did you write
in your thing?
(Jared) Oh, man.
-I do not like this--
-(metallic clattering)
-Fuck! Oh, my God.
-(Carly screams) What the fuck!
(Jared panting)
(Carly screaming in distance)
We got separated.
(officer)
You got separated. Why?
(Jared)
I was looking for something
in my bag earlier
and I found this...
This is a new backpack.
Devon's parents sent it like,
two days before I got here.
This doesn't make
any fucking sense.
There's no cell phone service.
(sniffles)
But... I'm getting out of here.
I'm a little freaked out, um...
(sniffles) ...and...
-(loud clattering)
-(Carly) Jared.
I got lost.
I've been freaking out.
(Kat) I don't understand
how she got so far ahead of us.
I don't...
(William) All right,
come this way.
I feel like
we should go this way.
(Kat) Yeah, I don't think we...
(chuckles)
...have much of a choice.
(tense music playing)
(Jared) It's creepy.
It's just like a...
like a playroom or something?
(Carly) There's toys in here.
I wonder if any of these
were Devon's.
(Jared) I don't know. I mean...
(Carly) Did the note
say anything about specific toys
that could be Devons?
(Jared) No, I--
Honestly, it was pretty vague
-for the most part.
-(Carly) Yeah.
(Jared)
I don't think they told us.
(indistinct chatter)
-(Carly) Yeah, It's so dusty.
-(Jared) Yeah.
(Carly) It's been here
a long time. The chalkboard.
(breathes heavily) Fuck.
(Kat) Okay.
(William)
We're gonna stick together.
(Kat) We're gonna stick--
stick together.
(William) I feel like
let's go this way?
(Kat) I feel like that's really
the only way we haven't...
-(William) Okay.
-(Kat) ...gone?
(static)
Oh, what the fuck?
(breathes heavily)
What the fuck is this?
(Carly) Wait.
That's really creepy.
(Jared)
I-- I mean, there's... (sighs)
...there's tons of graffiti
in here.
It could just be somebody's like
tag or something.
(Carly) I don't know.
It's really creepy.
(Jared) Yeah. Um...
(Carly) Let's just try
to find our way back.
(Kat) Okay.
(William) Here come this way,
come this way.
(Kat) Which way did we go?
Did we go that way?
(William) Uh, I don't know.
I feel like, let's just go...
(Kat) Okay, well don't run.
(Jared)
Barely even see anything.
(Kat whispers)
I dunno. I don't even know.
(Jared) They can't
have gone too far, right?
(Carly) No.
This is like...
(indistinct chatter)
(Jared) This place is creepy.
(breathes heavily) No.
What the fuck?
(indistinct distorted chatter)
(Alison breathes heavily)
What the...
(panicked breathing)
(William) We are not
supposed to be here.
Yeah, we are not
supposed to be here.
(Alison) That's goddamn blood.
What the fuck?
(Kat whispers)
I feel like we should go.
Yes, go!
I'm not going first!
(Kat whispers) That's definitely
a person, right?
(William) Yes.
(Kat) I don't want to....
(speaks indistinctly)
(Alison pants)
This-- This is not real.
This...
It's fucking Ali.
-Our Ali?
-(Kat) Our Ali.
Damn.
Wait, what... Ali.
(panting)
Did you do this?
Did you do this?
This is not a fucking joke.
(Kat) I-- I mean, like--
(Alison)
Who brought blood in here?
(William) Um. Okay,
well, let's back up.
This shit isn't funny.
(William) Whoa, whoa, whoa.
How's it becoming about us?
-(Kat) Listen, first of all--
-(William) You're the one--
Shut the fuck up.
I gotta get the fuck outta here.
(William) Why are you
in here by yourself?
(Kat) Wait, is this like Devon's
room or something? Like...
You're fucking with me.
(William) No one is
fucking with you.
-You're fucking with us.
-You're fucking with me!
(William) Yo.
(chuckling)
Something is wrong with her.
But wait, hold on.
We gotta get this.
(Kat) Okay, but...
First of all, it's wet.
So, you're telling me
she just happened
to stumble in on this?
And like, sure like maybe
it's like Devon's room but...
(whispers) You know what?
Did you look at her hands
by any chance?
-(William) No.
-(Kat) Fuck.
(William) Yo, we need
to take it from her.
I wanna see if there's red--
You know what I mean? If there's
-red shit on her hands.
-(William) There probably--
We need to take her camera
and see what she's--
She's been weird
this whole time.
We were literally just
talking shit about her.
Saying that she's
weird and then we come in here,
-she's sitting in the corner...
-(William) My intuition
-is always right.
-...rocking back and forth.
You know what
I'm saying? (laughs)
(William)
Rocking back and forth.
They did that to fuck with me.
(Kat and William laughing)
-Like, nice try.
-(William) She did this.
-(Kat) Nice try, Ali.
-Let's get her, let's get her.
I'm gonna figure out
who wrote that shit.
(William) Ali!
(Kat) I don't really want
to be this way, but...
(William) I don't trust
none of these hoes.
I mean, I think Jared's
like, okay.
Jared. (chuckles)
Jared could have gotten it,
and now he all
in Carly's goodies.
So no, he's canceled.
It's just not, no.
I'm not doing it.
I mean, I think-- Honestly,
I like Jared. I think he's...
(William) I liked Jared.
Past tense.
(both laugh)
I know. I feel like we had kind
of like a rough start.
-(William) We totally did.
-But...
I didn't like you at first.
But I feel like honestly
we kind of bonded over like,
why is this bitch
like lying to us?
Like lying directly to our face
and it's obvious.
-Exactly. Exactly.
-(Kat) It's obvious.
Her.... (whispers) ...answers
were kind of inconsistent.
-Do you know what I mean?
-(William) No, totally.
I don't know
why I'm whispering,
'cause I don't even know
where these people-- But like--
Uh-uh, she's-- she's exed.
I know it was them.
I know it was Kat.
I know it was William.
And they came in the room
and I was freaking out. And...
(indistinct chatter)
I know they put it there.
(Carly)
Oh, my GoPro died, by the way.
(officer)
So, let me ask you this.
You're stuck.
You can't find a way out.
You have no supplies
and no way to call for help.
What's your plan?
There was no plan.
I told you,
we just wanted to help.
(Jared) I mean, look,
is it absolutely
crucial-necessary
that we film everything?
(Alison) The parents asked us
to keep filming.
We have to keep filming.
And we'll have
another light source.
(Kat) I-- I-- Is it...?
I mean, we haven't had
not one clue today.
Wait, Will!
When we got here earlier,
remember you saw that--
that girl?
Wait, you saw a girl?
Why wouldn't you tell us that?
First of all, you need
to not speak for me.
-What color was her hair?
-What color was her--
What do you mean, a girl?
I didn't see a girl.
-(Carly) Girl or a woman?
-I didn't see any girl or woman.
-(Alison) How old did she look?
-(William) I don't know.
-I didn't see anything.
-What height was she?
(William) See why would you
open up your mouth?
Spirits don't like liars, okay?
So, the... the spirits
are gonna come up here
and grab you by your
ponytail if you keep lying.
Guys. It's three a.m.
There's no way it's three a.m.
It was just light.
That's what my watch says.
What does yours say?
-(Kat) No way.
-It's three a.m.
-(William) Oh.
-(Kat) No way!
(Jared) Time flew, I guess.
(Kat) I am not sleeping here.
No way. Mm-mm.
-Because whatever is out there--
-(William) Now I'm not tired
'cause now all of a sudden
everyone wants to start talking
about, "Oh, William saw this.
William saw this--"
(Kat) Well, did you
or did you not see a girl?
I did not see any girl.
-Well we can't go out there.
-(Kat) So she's lying.
I don't wanna go out there.
I never said that.
-(Kat) So she's lying.
-That was probably Carly.
(Kat) Are you lying?
Is that what he said?
You may need
to loosen the ponytail.
It might be pulling some
of your brain cells.
(Jared) All right, man.
Just chill out guys.
-I think we're all tired--
-(Carly) If anyone saw a girl
and is keeping their mouth shut
about it,
then that is a fucking
problem because we're here to,
-you know, get--
-(Alison) Okay. Everyone.
(officer) Listen. Let me just
tell you where I am, okay?
You tell me the truth,
I can work with you.
I'm telling you the truth.
(officer) But if you sit here
and lie, I cannot help you.
(indistinct chatter)
Well, I mean, I didn't
tell y'all this yet,
but I did bring
a little something
that I feel will like,
help us like
-get everything going.
-(Jared) No, no dude I can't.
I don't smoke. I don't do
any of that stuff anymore.
I can't do anything like that.
I'm not saying we need
to do something like that.
I have, um...
I have like a-- a spirit board.
So it... it... it... you see,
I mean, you like ask a question.
-Okay.
-I mean...
-I just don't see the point.
-Well, what did y'all bring?
-(Kat) I mean, I'm honestly...
-What did you bring?
...I am willing to do whatever
-we need to do, so...
-Okay. Thank you.
I just don't see the point
in searching for a ghost.
I don't believe in it.
-Ghosts--
-(William) Why are you here?
Ghosts and spirits
are just ways for people to
try to explain what they
feel is unexplainable.
It's a coping mechanism.
A waste of time, really.
(tense music playing)
Are you okay?
(ghostly voice)
You never leave me,
why are you leaving now?
(distorted indistinct chatter)
(William) All right.
Devon, are you here?
(Alison) I don't know
if you should be
playing around
with that right now.
I think we all have to
actually put our hands on it,
but I mean,
I won't make anyone do it.
Devon, are you here?
Guys, maybe we should
find somewhere else to...
He had this spirit board and...
(William) It was just the
first thing I thought of.
I know. I know
it doesn't make sense, but...
there's stuff down there.
(officer) What does that mean?
It means I don't believe
in this stuff.
(officer) What kind of stuff?
You're going to think I'm crazy.
(Alison) Hand selected, right?
(Jared) Yeah, it's pretty crazy.
(Alison) We have to feel
a little important.
We have to feel some something.
(Jared) Yeah, I definitely feel
like I have a purpose here,
but I don't know.
(Willaim) I mean, well,
I mean, we haven't really
found much yet.
-(Jared) Yeah.
-(William) But I think we will.
Yeah, we have time.
We let them in.
(indistinct chatter)
(ghostly voice) Jared.
Oh my God, we let them in.
(indistinct overlapping chatter)
(breathes deeply)
(baby crying in distance)
(eerie music playing)
(woman) Do you hear that?
(William) Oh! What the...
What?
(Jared) Uh....
This is perfect. Look.
No, no, no. Look, look, look.
You have to think as a kid,
they're trying to play with us.
And we're over here screaming.
(indistinct chatter)
(Alison) I don't think we should
freak out.
-(loud clanging)
-(all scream)
(Jared) I'm starting to freak
out a little bit.
(Kat panting)
(Jared) No, no, no, no, no, no.
I'm not doing all that.
(overlapping panicked chatter)
(Kat) Okay, um...
-I'm like trying to think.
-(indistinct panicked chatter)
(Kat) I don't know. Okay. Um...
I'm like trying to think.
I know what
it sounds like, okay.
(sniffles)
You think I don't hear myself?
(sobbing) I'm not crazy.
(Alison) Which one
of you fucking did it?
(Jared) What are you
talking about?
(Alison) You think it's funny
to fuck with me?
(Carly) Who took our stuff?
Was it you?
None of my stuff is in my bag!
(Alison) Do you think it's funny
to bring fucking blood here?
(Jared) What are you
talking about?
-What do you mean?
-(William) You have problems.
One of you sick assholes did it.
Oh, right, right, right.
There's this little kid chair.
(Alison)
None of this makes sense!
And it says "Devon,
Devon, Devon" on the wall,
and she is freaking
the fuck out about it.
We're like,
"Oh, this is good evidence."
-This is what we came here for.
-It's a clue. It's a clue.
And she's freaking out.
So...
the way she's acting is not--
-(Carly) Fuck it, I'm leaving.
-(William) I'm out, because--
I'm not-- I'm not messing.
I'm down with Carly, for once.
(Jared) Carly! Wait! Don't go!
(eerie whistling)
(Kat shushes)
Shut up. Shut up. Shut up!
(whistling continues)
(Kat) Is that a....
(whispers) I think there's
a fucking person in here.
-I don't know if this is safe.
-(William) Oh, shit.
(Alison) Someone check the door.
(William and Kat)
I'm not checking the door.
(Jared) I'll do it. Here...
(Alison) Gimme your camera.
-(squeaking)
-(mouthing)
(indistinct chatter in distance)
-(music fades)
-(door squeaking)
(Alison chuckles)
There's nothing there.
-(loud screaming)
-(dramatic music playing)
(indistinct panicked chatter)
The sound.
(panicked chatter continues)
The fucking screech.
(indistinct chatter, yelling)
(Alison) There's no way out!
There's no way out!
(Kat) Go, go, go, go, go!
We just-- We just ran.
I don't know where anyone went.
We just ran.
(tense music playing)
(Alison breathing heavily)
Guys, where did you go?
(Carly screams)
Where are you going?
(William coughing)
(officer) You say you don't know
what happened to them,
but weren't you with them?
You said you were all together.
(Alison panting) Fuck.
(Carly) Kat!
Kat! Where's Kat?
(Alison)
What do you mean where's Kat?
-(Jared) Kat?
-(William coughing)
(Carly) Fuck, we lost Ali too.
(sobbing) I don't wanna do this!
-(Carly) She went to find Ali.
-(indistinct chatter)
(William) She don't care
about Ali like that.
I know Kat more than you all do.
(Kat) If something...
If something happens to me,
I just want you to know that...
(crying) I'm proud of you,
and I love you
and I'm so sorry I wasn't...
I just felt like I wasn't
the best mother
and this is the perfect
example of that.
I just wanted
to provide for you.
(Jared) Why... why are we even
looking for them?
Why don't we just
worry about ourselves right now
and try to get out here,
all right?
(William) What do you mean?
We're... we're a group
Well she felt comfortable
running off on her own,
-so why don't we just--
-If you ran off on your own,
we would come to look for you...
-(Jared) No, that's not--
-...Jared.
Yes, that is. Uh-- Do-- Do--
Now you can't speak.
Whatever. I can't.
-(Jared) Hey, hey. Look--
-(Carly) Come back.
(Jared) Fine, fine. Whatever.
(crying) I'm so sorry.
(Elle) Mom?
-Mom?
-(Kat gasps)
(Elle) Mom?
-Mom?
-(Kat gasping, sobbing)
(Elle) Mom?
(Kat sobbing, panting)
Guys!
Please.
(whispers) No fucking way.
(breathes shakily) No.
No fucking way.
What the fuck? What the fuck?
I'm taking this with me.
Okay. You're all right.
Okay, calm down.
It's okay. It's okay. It's okay.
(child giggling)
-(ominous music playing)
-(giggling continues)
(Kat sobbing)
(shouting) Who is there?
(Elle yelling indistinctly)
(Kat) Elle?
Elle!
(William) Kat! Kat!
Kat, where are you?
Kat!
Jesus Christ. (panting)
-(Elle) Mom?
-(Kat) Elle?
-(Elle) Mom?
-(Kat) Elle!
Elle, is that you?
-(Elle) Mom?
-(Kat) Elle!
Why are you hiding from me?
(Elle) Mom? Mom?
Mom?
-(Kat) I'm coming, honey.
-(Elle) Mom?
(Kat whimpers)
(Elle) Mom?
-Mom?
-(Kat) I'm... I'm coming, honey.
(screaming) Where are you?
(sobs)
(coughs) Elle! Where are you?
Elle!
Elle! Elle! Elle!
(ominous music continues)
(distorted, indistinct chatter)
-(Elle) Mom?
-(dramatic sting)
(Kat screaming) Elle! Elle!
(indistinct yelling)
Elle. Please! Elle,
why are you running from me?
No! Elle! Elle, please. Please!
(screaming)
Please, please!
Elle?
Elle, honey.
(screams)
(Alison) Jared.
Oh, God. (panting)
Carly.
Oh, no.
Kat.
-(Kat) Oh, honey. Honey!
-(child screams)
Kat?
Kat. Kat?
Kat?
Shit, okay.
(sobs, screams) Kat!
Kat. Kat.
Shit, okay.
(William) Kat, I'm not playing.
You got three seconds. Come out.
Kat!
(Alison sobbing)
(William) Kat.
Kat?
Okay. Okay. Okay.
Kat...
Kat. Kat, if you're hiding,
it's William. You can come out.
Seriously. Kat!
Kat.
Kat!
Oh, hell no. (screams)
Oh, shit! Oh hell to the no!
Uh-uh. (screams)
Shit. Fuck. Oh, no, no, no, no.
Get back. Get back!
(pants, coughs)
What does it say?
Was that from a Ouija--
R. U.
Run?
Run?
Oh, hell no. Run? I can't run!
I can't run!
(screams)
No!
Back up, Bitch.
Back up. Back up.
Back up! I told you to back up!
(ghostly screaming)
(Jared) No, no, no! Fuck!
How do we end up back in here?
Oh, this can't be right.
I think we--
we have to be taking
a wrong turn or something.
(Carly and Jared panting)
-(Carly) Wait.
-(Jared) God.
Will you put
that thing down please?
Seriously.
Not the time for that.
(Carly) It's my only
source of light.
And besides, this is my vlog
for my fans,
as soon as I get out of here.
(Alison) What fans?
(Carly) You have
an opinion now? Let's hear it.
(Jared) Take it easy.
Take it easy.
(Carly) What is that?
-(Alison) No, don't.
-(Carly) What is it, Ali?
Jared.
Why does she have two cameras?
Why do you have a second camera?
(Kat screaming over camera)
-Where did you get her camera?
-I can't watch this.
(Alison) I don't know!
(Jared) I can't do this anymore.
-(Carly) Jared.
-(Jared) Wait, Carly, wait.
(Carly sobbing) I'm sorry.
Oh, my God!
William!
Please! Guys, where are you?
Guys? Guys!
Kat? William?
Oh, God. Please! Whoa!
(Jared) We gotta get outta here.
(Carly) Oh, my God!
And we only have each other,
so I need you to work with me.
-And for the record--
-We're not gonna make it, Jared.
(Jared) I think we are,
but we've gotta do something.
I mean, they could still
be out there.
They could still be somewhere
in here looking for us.
We have no idea.
But we've gotta do something.
We can't just sit here.
(screams, sobs)
Somebody help me!
Please! What!
(sobbing)
I just want to go home.
Please, can I just go home?
(sobbing)
Please! This isn't
funny anymore!
I can't do this anymore, okay?
Guys! Kat.
(wailing)
I can't.
(panting)
Dad, I'm so sorry!
Please come get me out of here!
Dad!
What the fuck.
Why did I come here?
Please, come get me.
Please, somebody come get me.
Please! Dad!
I'm so sorry.
You've given me everything.
(whistling)
(Carly) Hello? What?
What? What? What? Who are you!
What? What?
Dad! Dad!
Dad! (screams)
No! no!
No, no. I can't die like this.
I can't die like this. (screams)
-(static)
-(music concludes)
(Alison inhales)
We're gonna die here.
We're both just
going to die here.
We're gonna die here, Jared.
(ghostly voice) Jared.
Jared.
(Jared) We should go find them.
Come on.
Come on!
I'm gonna go look for Carly.
Stay here.
I'll be back.
(ghostly voice) Jared.
(ominous music playing)
(Jared) Hello?
-Hel--
-(ghostly voice) Jared.
-(Jared) Hello?
-(ghostly voice) Jared.
-Hello?
-(ghostly voice) Jared. Jared.
Hello?
-(ghostly voice) Jared.
-(Jared) Hello!
(ghostly voice)
It's time to come home.
-Jared, I miss you.
-(Jared) Mom?
-(ghostly voice) Jared.
-Mom?
(ghostly voice)
It's time to come home.
It's time to come home, Jared.
(sobbing) Mom, stop! Hello!
(ghostly voice) Jared.
Come home, Jared.
Come home.
-I miss you.
-Mom! (echoes)
(eerie music playing)
(sobs)
(Jared) Mom.
Mom!
(ghostly voice)
I told you not to go.
(Jared) Mom.
-Jared.
-(Jared in distance) Mom.
(Alison) Jared!
(Jared) Mom, I'm sorry.
Mom, I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
I tried really hard. I just--
-No, no, no. Please.
-(Alison screams)
Mom, I'm so sorry. (sobbing)
(ghostly voice)
It's okay, sweetheart.
It's not okay.
It's not! (sobbing)
-(Alison) Jared!
-(sobbing) No! No, no, no.
-No. No. No! Go. Go. Go!
-Jared! Jared!
-Run!
-(Alison screaming)
-Open the fucking door!
-(Jared) No, no, no.
-Please. Please.
-(Alison screaming)
-Jared!
-No. No.
(sobbing) I can't do it again.
-(Alison) Jared!
-Please.
(Alison screaming)
Open the fucking door!
(both wailing)
(sobs) Jared!
(sobs) Jared!
(screaming, wailing)
Jared!
(wailing)
(wailing)
Jared! No!
Jared, I'm so sorry.
I'm so sorry!
(wailing)
(screaming)
(sobbing) I'm so sorry.
Jared, I'm so sorry.
If anyone finds this tape,
my name is Dr. Alison Roberts.
I'm a psychiatrist...
and if someone finds this tape,
please let them know
that William Edwards,
Jared Stevens,
Kat Rose,
and Carly Carmichael were here.
They didn't vanish.
And it was my... (pants)
(teenager 1) Come on.
(Alison screams)
(Alison screaming, sobbing)
(screaming)
(screaming)
(Alison screaming)
(teenager 2)
What the fuck was that?
-(screaming) Get out!
-(screams)
(screaming) Get out of here!
(screaming) Get out!
(officer) I think you did it.
I know
because I've seen footage of you
walking around that property,
setting up cameras
all over the place.
It was your plan
-this whole time.
-(Alison) No! No!
-(officer) It was you...
-Fuck!
(officer)
...and I need you to tell me.
Okay! I did it!
(officer) You did what?
(Alison) I needed a case study
and I made a website.
All right. I needed volunteers.
They-- They got on,
I contacted them.
(officer) Case study, for what?
I am Dr. Ali, and this
is my first journal log.
I was getting my degree
in psychology.
(sniffles) I was doing
my PhD thesis.
(officer) What does that mean?
And today
is the day... (chuckles)
...that I start getting footage
for my PhD thesis.
I just wanted to know
what would happen
to our minds in there.
(officer) Well, how'd that
work out for you?
(dramatic music playing)
Tell me about Devon, Ali.
Ali.
Tell me.
There is no Devon!
There's no Devon.
There's no parents.
I made it all up.
I made it all up and I'm sorry.
And there's nothing
I can do about it now.
And I can't take it back now.
And I don't know what to do.
(sobs)
Devon, Devon, Devon.
(sobbing) I'm so sorry.
(officer) Tell me where
the bodies are, Ali.
There aren't any. (sniffles)
(officers) There aren't any?
You hid them in that building
because you know
it's gonna be torn down
-in a matter of days.
-No.
(officer) So you hid
the bodies there.
You didn't think you were
gonna get caught.
-(Alison) That's not true.
-(officer) And you got stuck.
And then those two kids
found you
and they brought you here.
I need you to tell me
that you did this.
I'm not lying.
I'm telling you the truth.
(officer) I need you to
tell me where the bodies are.
I'm telling you the truth.
I'm telling you the truth.
(sniffles)
(officer) Let me tell you
what I'm gonna do.
I'm gonna go
find the bodies myself.
I'm gonna go to that building...
(Alison) No. No. Don't go there.
-(officer) ...myself.
-Don't go there.
(officer)
I'm gonna find them myself.
If you go there, you will die.
Do you hear me? You will die!
(officer)
I tried my best with you.
Just know that.
I'm so sorry.
I'm so sorry.
(dramatic ominous music playing)
(narrator)In 1902,
the asylum opened
promising a new beginning
for the mentally retarded
and mentally ill.
Within days,
the conditions became volatile
with overcrowding.
Bodies began to rot
in their own fecal matter.
Patients were restrained
to their beds
in an effort
to maintain control.
As conditions worsened,
staff reported
that some patients
turned to cannibalism.
In this expose,
we explore the conditions
these children
are forced to live in,
due to the stigma attached
to their condition.
(child sobbing faintly)
(narrator)Most importantly,
we investigate
the most concerning issue
to come out of this facility
in an attempt
to answer the question.
Where are the missing children?
(banging at door)
(teenager 1) Come on!
(teenager 2) They fucking
tortured kids here, bro.
(teenager 1) They're tearing
it down, bro. Relax.
(teenager 1) William, Jared,
Carly, Kat. Help us?
(teenager 2) Oh,
what's this teddy bear?
Aren't these the people names
on the wall?
-(teenager 2) I think so.
-(teenager 1) Why the F--
There's cameras.
(teenager 2) Oh, shit,
yours is on.
-(camera beeps)
-(gasps)
(screams coming from camera)
(teenager 1) Bro, that's fucked.
-(woman whimpering, panting)
-(footsteps approaching)
(teenager 1) Bro, we need to go.
(woman screams) Get out!
(all screaming)
(woman screaming) Get going!
Get out of here!
(woman screams) Get out!
(screams)
(officer) Please state
your name for the record.
(clears throat) Allison.
(sniffles) Allison Roberts.
(officer) Ali, why are you here?
-(shakily) I don't know.
-(officer) You don't know?
How long have you been
down there?
(shakily) I don't know.
(officer) Let's start
from the beginning.
How did you all end up there
in the first place?
(breathes sharply)
All right, y'all, it is the day.
Yes, ma'am. Miss Pam.
So this is the website
that like I sent my stuff into
and we get
a $100,000 cash prize.
But the gag is, we gotta
split it like five ways.
So I only get 20,000,
but it's whatever.
She was born in '86,
so that was like approximately
like 20,000 years ago.
And...
why all of a sudden
are the parents interested
in my girl Devon?
-(mother) What are you doing?
-Huh?
(mother) It's almost noon.
Why are you still sitting here?
Oh... (stutters) No.
I was just about to leave.
(mother) You are not
ready for this.
-Yes, I am.
-(mother) No, no, you're not.
(man clicks tongue)
So, have you spoken
to your dad
since he cut you off?
(Carly) No.
And I'm not going to.
I mean, obviously
he doesn't care about me
since he totally cut me off.
-(Kat) Is that working okay?
-(Elle) I think so.
(Kat) Yeah? How do I look?
(Elle) Great. Like always.
(Kat) You're so sweet.
-(torch clicks)
-This at least works.
-What's that?
-It's... it's just--
I thought you weren't
taking this job.
Well, you know, honey,
we need
the money right now, okay?
It's fine. It's just
a couple of days.
Really? It's fine.
Why you-- you never leave
for a couple days.
-Why are you leaving now?
-(sighs) I know, honey.
I'm not crazy about
the idea either, but it's...
Wait, why did you pick this?
Why... why this one?
Honey, we-- Like I said,
we really need the money.
Seriously. This is gonna
be so easy. I can do this.
This is easy money for us.
Again, I'm not worried
about that money.
I'm worried about you.
I'll be back
before you even know it.
Yes, or no?
I'm gonna say like,
Devon... what's tea?
I'm taking this with me.
You like grandma.
-She sleeps in until like 3:00.
-(laughs)
Well, Miss, I have been sleeping
until 11 o'clock on weekends.
You've been sleeping in too.
I like, literally don't wanna
break it, but oh, well.
Yes?
(man)
No, you look like a disco ball.
(sighs) Okay, well,
I love to sparkle, so I...
-(man) Yeah, no, put it down.
-Okay.
And this?
(man)
That's actually pretty cute.
-You should take that.
-(Carly) Okay.
Devon better have my money.
That's what I'm talking about.
(sighs) I love you.
Take care of yourself.
I love you too.
I'll see you really soon.
-Please be safe.
-I will. I'll be fine.
-The paper.
-Right, right, right.
The... the camera?
-Yes.
-Don't forget the camera.
All right. Okay.
(Elle) I still--
I don't think you should go.
I just-- I-- It's not safe.
It's gonna be okay.
Hey, I promise, okay.
Like I said,
it's going to be fine.
I'm gonna be back
before you know it.
You work on your choreography,
you know.
I know you have
so much potential
and I want to send you
to your dance classes, okay?
-(Elle) Okay.
-(sniffles) Camera.
(sniffles, sighs)
(sniffles)
(car engine humming)
All right. Goodness.
Not me being
in the middle of nowhere.
How am I gonna call someone?
I ain't got no service out here.
Bye, sweetie.
I'll be... I'll be back
before you know it.
(blows kiss)
(exhales softly)
(groans) I'm literally scared.
No, I'm not. Child please.
All right, Devon, we here.
What is this?
(William) I feel like that's
a squirrel, but I also feel like
it could be like Devon's little,
little buddies.
How does this
camera work-- Even work?
Do I? Oh, I can zoom.
Oh, I can zoom. Okay.
Lemme go ahead.
Why am I the first one here
is the question. Y'all fake.
(Jared) Okay. I just need to get
myself together really quick.
So we have the email.
Um, this I guess is...
the map to this place.
Is that-- God, this place
looks like a jail.
How could somebody
send their kid here?
This is awful.
Oh Jesus.
-Oh, sorry.
-(Jared) Hi, Sorry.
-You scared me. Hi.
-(Jared) You scared me too.
-I'm Kat.
-(Jared) Sorry. Jared,
-nice to meet you.
-Nice to meet you.
Ew. Not this girl playing
in the weeds. Hey.
Hey, bitch. I just wanna know
if you're here
for Devon's parents.
I mean, I didn't really see
like a regular entrance,
so I've just kind of been
-running around. Um...
-Yeah.
Sketching myself out
a little bit.
I know, I'm trying to like,
keep calm. Um...
-So do you think I'm gonna--
-So I-- So what are you...
What are you doing here?
Like how are yo-- How did you...
-(Jared) Uh...
-...get involved in all this?
...just looking around
for jobs, I guess.
I came across this thing
and... and it,
you know, it seemed
really, really good for...
-Yeah
-...what they pay.
-What about you?
-(Kat) Um...
I mean, the money ob...
obviously helps. Um, I'm a mom.
-Oh, okay. Right.
-(Kat) They don't tell you
how expensive kids are
until you have them.
Yeah. I... I live with my mom.
-Do you?
-I've put her through the ringer
-a few times.
-Are you... are you guys close?
Yeah. It's a tough, uh,
story, but you know.
-(Kat) Okay.
-Yeah. We're... we're close now.
-We're doing pretty good.
-Good, good, good.
Wait, why am I chasing
literally a stranger?
(sighs) Um. Yeah, I think
if we just kind of...
-stay together.
-Yeah, definitely.
That's probably the best bet,
'cause I feel like
if we separate at any point,
like we're not gonna be able
to find each other again.
Yeah. You can be my mom today.
Yeah! I would love
to be your mom today.
-(Jared) What's your name again?
-(Kat) Kat.
-Jared.
-(Jared) Jared.
Nice to meet you,
new son. (laughs)
Oh, Jesus.
See, I didn't sign up
for all this.
(both scream)
Jesus, you can't be
running up on folk.
What's wrong with you,
are you here
-for the thing?
-To find Devon? Yeah, of course.
Ugh. Okay.
Well, I don't know.
I just saw some--
This bitch in this
like all white look,
but she was like doing the most.
(Kat) Would you mind--
can you hold this for a sec...
-(Jared) Yeah, no problem.
-...'cause I feel like...
honestly, I didn't even
get a chance
to look at this map yet.
I don't even know
this girl's last name.
-(Jared) It's crazy out here
-Like I meant to.
Did you get a map?
(Jared) Yeah, it's in my bag.
I... I looked at it,
but honestly, this place
is so huge. I couldn't
even tell where to start.
I feel like
the directions were--
Okay, here we go.
The directions were very vague.
(officer) Why did you have
video cameras?
(clicks tongue)
Whoever ran the online site
they sent them to us. We...
They just came in the mail.
(indistinct chatter)
-(Jared) That's all I know is--
-How old would she be now?
-She went missing--
-Twenty years ago?
-(Kat) Twenty years ago.
-Twenty years ago.
-So...
-(Kat) She was what? Lemme...
She didn't even say
in the email how old--
I mean, she looks young.
So she'd probably
be what? Like...
-(sighs)
-(Jared) I mean, I don't think
-we're--
-She'd be like middle age now.
(Jared) I don't think
we're looking for like a person.
-You know what I mean?
-I Know. I mean, I--
-Yeah, I know.
-(twigs crack)
I just like to be able
to hold back.
(Jared) I know.
I think the parents assume
she's dead by now.
They just want to see if they
missed any clues or something.
(Kat) Okay.
(Jared grunts) Let see
what's in there.
(Kat) If you're brave enough
to stick your hand in there
Oh, okay. It's like...
-(Jared) You got it.
-(Kat) It's a hallway.
This is a better way to do it.
'cause I can't really stick
my hand in there.
-(object thuds)
-(Jared) Wait. (shushes)
(Kat) Do you hear something?
Dude, that was scary.
Yeah, just-- I'm gonna
step back for a second.
I'm so scared
to stick my hand in there.
-(loud thud)
-Oh Jesus Christ.
(Jared) Okay uh...
(Kat) Okay.
I'm gonna follow-- So...
(Jared)
Weren't we supposed to meet up
-with some other people anyway?
-(Kat) Yeah.
So like, why are you even here?
(Carly) I don't really wanna
talk about it,
but I could really
use the money.
My dad cut me off.
So I'm just trying
to find info on this girl.
Get my money
and leave this place.
(chuckles) Okay.
So you do wanna talk about it?
(Carly) I need
to prove to my dad
that I can do things
without his help.
(William) You don't have to
prove shit to nobody. (chuckles)
-(Carly) Who are these two?
-(William) I dunno. Hello?
-Oh, Hi.
-(Kat) Hi.
(William) Are y'all here
for the--
Are y'all here for Devon?
-(William) Mm-hmm.
-Okay, cool.
-Yeah.
-Uh, I'm Jared.
-Nice to meet you
-William.
-Kat. Sorry...
-Carly.
-...it's weird with the camera.
-(William) I know, the camera.
Kat. Nice to meet you.
We couldn't really
find a way in.
We were just kind of--
Have you guys seen anything?
-(William) Nope. I didn't see.
-We came from that way.
Everything seemed locked up.
Any window that was open,
there was bars on it.
Right. They gave us
literally zero instructions,
-so I don't know.
-Which way did you come from?
-We came over here.
-(William) That way.
(Kat) And there was
no way to get in.
-(William) Nope. So...
-(Kat) All right.
...do you guys think like,
we'll find anything or...
I mean, I hope to find
something for this girl.
(William) For the--
And this check.
-I mean...
-Let's not forget the check.
-Period. (laughs)
-(Jared) Yeah.
That's the most
important thing. So...
Well, if I was
that girl's parents,
I would hope
that everyone here would be...
(sighs) ...here to find
anything about Devon, but...
-Oh.
-(Kat sighs) That's fine. Um.
-(William) Okay.
-(Jared) Um...
We'll make it work. Um...
I mean-- I think we're...
waiting for one
other person, aren't we?
-(Jared) Oh
-I guess,
but they could
be already inside.
-(Kat) Yeah.
-So... Listen, let's just start.
we talk... we talking too much.
I feel like, let's just
go this way.
I haven't been this way.
Y'all haven't been this way.
So let's just go that way.
(Kat) Maybe that other person
knows how to get in.
-Right?
-Or maybe they're over there.
-(Jared) Why don't we just go.
-Kat?
-(Jared) Okay, yeah.
-(Kat) Okay, yeah.
-Perfect. Onward.
-(Jared) All right.
-Y'all walking mad slow.
-(Kat) Okay.
We already went this way,
didn't we?
Yeah.
(William) Look who was right.
-Hey.
-Hello. You're late. (chuckles)
Yeah. Um, I caught
some car troubles,
-a ways back.
-Not car troubles.
-(Alison) Yeah, but...
-Shit happens
...it's all good. I'm, um...
-I'm Allie
-Carly.
-Kat.
-Jared.
William.
(officer) Did you know them
before this?
(shakily) No.
(officer) How did you meet?
(shakily) Online.
-
-(Alison) All right.
(William) This looks like
a tunnel to-- (exclaims)
-See... These bugs.
-Go ahead.
-(leaves crunching)
-(indistinct chatter)
Is it unlocked?
It is. I mean, I don't--
I'm not trying to go first.
I'm not going first.
I'm gonna put
the camera right inside.
-(door creaking)
-(Carly) Come on, push. (laughs)
(footsteps rustling)
(indistinct chatter)
(William) Like... So...
All right.
-(door slams)
-(screaming)
-(Kat) Oh. My. God.
-(William) Oh, Shit.
(Jared) Chill out,
chill out. chill out.
-(Carly) Chill out?
-(Jared) It's fine. It's fine.
Right. (chuckles nervously)
What is chill out?
-I don't understand.
-Okay.
(metal creaking)
-Oh, come on. Are you serious?
-(William) Stop playing.
I'm not playing. I can't--
-Seriously, can't get it
-No...
Open it, Jared.
-Here. Hold this.
-It's stuck! I can't open it.
(Carly) Will, you try.
(William) Are you
literally stupid?
-Why would I be-- No.
-(Kat) Here you get over here.
-(Kat) Ready?
-Ready. One. Two. Three
-(screams) Fuck!
-(William) Oh, hell no.
(indistinct chatter)
-(Jared) Relax. Relax. Relax.
-(Alison) Listen. Relax. Relax.
It's an old building.
(William) All right,
well let's move forward then.
(officer) So you walk in,
the door gets slammed,
then you're stuck?
(sobs) Yes.
We tried to get out. But...
(officer) Who slammed the door?
I don't know.
(Kat) I told my daughter
I would call her
when I first got here.
I did not have any service.
I don't know.
Do you have service?
Like look, nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
That sucks.
I mean, maybe in another
part of the building,
but it really kinda sucks that
there is literally no service.
(indistinct chatter)
(Kat) Nothing.
Nothing.
I'm going to try calling.
You don't have
any service either?
(Jared) Mm-hm.
(Alison) All right. Well, maybe
we just keep moving. All right?
(Kat) Yeah, maybe, yeah.
(Alison) If we get closer
to an exit.
(Kat) Yeah, yeah, 'cause...
Yeah, okay.
Worth a shot, I guess.
Maybe I'll just turn mine off,
to like conserve battery.
(officer) Why wouldn't you try
to leave? Why would you stay?
We tried. We couldn't get out.
Don't you get it?
There's no way out.
There's no way out.
(Jared) A little bit of mold,
but...
-I don't know.
-(Carly) Devon... look!
(Jared) So what exactly are we
supposed to be looking for?
(Carly) Okay?
-Okay. Well that's a clue.
-(Carly) We know she was here.
-So, we should be getting this.
-I mean...
That's not a common spelling
of that name, right?
(William) I thought it
was Devon when I first saw it.
(indistinct chatter)
(William) That literally smells
like armpits.
(Alison) Oh, God.
I mean, for where we are.
(indistinct chatter)
-God, there are all these beds--
-Oh, my God.
-Wait.
-Wait.
-(indistinct sound)
-Why are, there--
(Kat) What was that?
-(Alison) Did you hear that?
-(Carly) Woah.
(Jared) Here, you can
stick close by me.
(Kat) Woah.
(Jared) All right, we need
to figure out what we're doing,
'cause I don't know
how long I can be in here.
(indistinct chatter)
-(loud bang)
-(all scream)
(William) Oh shit! Oh,
uh-uh. No, ma'am.
-(Jared) Oh, no...
-(Alison) It's all right.
I am getting, like--
look at this.
-I'm getting crazy goosebumps.
-(William) No, same.
-(Jared) All right, hold on.
-(Carly) Yeah, I see.
-(Carly) And what animal...
-(Jared shushing)
-...do you guys think that is.
-(William) That's literally
-what I'm saying.
-(Jared) Hello!
I don't know. I mean, my--
This is my thought, right?
That somebody is like in here
with us and I don't know
if it's safe right now.
So I don't know
if we should just leave.
-(thuds)
-(all scream)
-(Alison) We can't leave.
-(Kat) Well, I mean just like--
All right, let's just
keep our heads. All right?
(William) Absolutely.
(Alison) We're not gonna
find out anything
just standing here guys.
(Carly) I'm not
going first. So...
(Alison) I say we keep
moving forward.
Why do I have to be
the brave one? You come with me.
(William) I can be second,
but I'll be a close second.
-(Kat) Did you push it?
-(Jared) Yeah.
Oh. Hell no, dude.
(Carly) Is there somebody
out there?
-Jared, you go.
-(William) Right, I vote Jared.
(Kat) You know what?
Somebody needs to be brave.
(Jared)
Maybe we should think about--
Maybe there are like,
bums living here or--
But also we're looking
for clues for Devon. Like...
-(Carly) Well, Devon's family.
-(William) So...
(Jared sighs) All right.
(Kat) I...
-(Carly) What was that?
-(Kat) Just...
-(William) Where--
-(Kat) I just saw somebody.
Why is there--
Okay, do you see that?
(William) What?
(Kat) There's a--
I'm not going crazy.
There was a light in that room.
I swear I saw somebody's hand.
I don't want to go
over there though.
I don't feel like safe.
(William) Oh, no.
-(thudding)
-(all scream)
(William) Uh-uh.
(Jared) All right, guys.
It's an old building,
it's probably just something
breaking or falling, come on.
(Carly) You're the one
that's bugging out.
(William) All right, y'all can't
be doing all this stuff.
(indistinct chatter)
(Jared) I can't see anything.
We only have these lights
but it's so deep
and dark. I'm sorry.
What the fuck are we doing here?
(William) What are these words?
We should be looking at
these words. They're like clues.
Why are some of
the names crossed out?
(Kat) Okay,
there's either an animal
or something back there.
And I don't know if it's safe.
-Should, we just...
-(indistinct chatter)
(Alison) It's probably
animals guys.
(William) What's going on
under there?
I feel like under there,
under that thing.
(girl moans)
(Jared) I think we need
to look somewhere else.
(Alison) Let's just
move forward.
Where?
-(camera beeps)
-Fucking battery.
(Jared) Uh, no.
I think the absolute fuck not.
-(all gasp)
-(Jared) Aw, man. Dude.
-(thudding)
-(all scream)
-(Jared) Hello?
-(all scream)
-(William) Devon, relax.
-All right. That was--
That was--
There's someone in there.
(Kat) I know. Sorry.
-(William) I mean, I don't know.
-(Carly) I'm sorry.
Do you see the glass?
(indistinct chatter)
(officer) How did you know where
to go once you were inside?
How did you know what
you were looking for?
On the map...
There was writing
and Devon's name
with like a star on it. So...
we went there
after the door closed and...
-(William) This good?
-(Jared) Yeah.
Let's just set up
a base camp here.
(indistinct chatter)
(Jared) Everyone on board?
Come on, let's move these beds.
Are these the only ones?
(Alison) We just thought
that maybe
something would be there
if it's where she was. Right?
(officer) So that's why
you thought you should...
stay in that area?
Because you saw Devon's name
on the wall?
(William) Right,
Let's just talk about our--
-Let's talk about our game plan.
-Okay? Yeah.
(Alison) Do you all
have lanterns?
We should probably
take those out.
We found what we could, just...
just to make it
through the night. All right.
(indistinct chatter)
(Carly) I don't know, guys.
I feel like we're searching
for the impossible here.
We're not gonna find
anything on Devon.
-I don't know.
-I mean, I think we will.
I think we should just pretend
and get some footage
and get out of here.
You know what? I like that idea.
-Wait. No, no, no.
-I'm down with that.
-Okay, wait...
-Let's find answers guys.
Wait, wait. Let me guess.
Let me guess.
You're not a mom, are you?
-Oh?
-(Carly) No,
I mean, okay.
Of course you're not,
because you can't even
put yourself in the mindset
of what it would be like to have
a child that goes missing.
I mean, this family--
Think about it.
This family is paying us
to stay in this place and try
to find any clue about Devon.
-I mean, I just...
-(Carly) You're right.
...don't think we should
disrespect them. That's all.
I'm sorry I got
like heated. It's just...
-(Jared) Yeah, I mean...
-I'm a mom.
I mean at least we're getting
like, help out, you know?
I mean, I feel kind of good
about being able to come in here
and do something
for once, you know?
Exactly. And like you said,
they're paying us.
-Yeah.
-So as long as we...
I mean, they're desperate.
...do our best, but...
Well, other than like,
the check, what made you all
want to do it, I mean,
I understand you're a mom.
-I think we got that.
-(both laugh)
Um, but like,
I don't know your story.
I would love to know your story.
And I don't really know
too much about you.
-So what's the tea?
-Well, let's start with you.
(William) Mm-hmm.
Well, I still live at home
with my parents.
And they just cut me off.
And so it's kind
of my first time like
being alone and working.
So I just like,
I really need the money.
(William) Mm. I feel that.
So... I don't know,
though, like...
I know what it's like to like,
not really have your parents
like care.
And I just feel like
why would Devon's parents
leave her here, you know?
They just now
wanna find answers.
That's what I also thought too.
Like all of a sudden
20 years later
now they want to be like,
"Oh, let me find..." What?
Like, what happened
all those 20 years.
Why were they not searching?
Like...
Well, you never know
what parents are going through
-with their kids, right?
-(scoffs)
-Yeah. That's true.
-I mean, I know I put my mom
through it for sure.
Yeah, I'm... I'm...
I'm kind of new into this
clean and sober lifestyle
-and, um...
-Congrats.
Thank you. Um, and I don't know,
I guess I just kind of
thought that maybe
this will be a nice way
to show my mom that I'm
able to take care of myself
and I can also pay her
back for all the times
that she's taken care of me.
So... I don't know.
What about you?
Why are you here?
(scoffs) I mean, what--
I don't have as much
of a sad story to be honest.
I just literally love money.
But no, really, I mean, I was
bartending and waiting tables
and I'm just tired of taking
other people's orders.
So, we all win.
I don't think we ever heard
why you're here.
-Oh. (chuckles)
-(tense music playing)
I think I have like a personal
connection to Devon's story.
Uh...
There's this thing
that's always nagged at me.
Almost like tormented me.
And Devon's story,
this place, finding her.
Like, maybe it'll
give me the answers
that I've been looking
for all these years.
And I can sleep again, you know.
-(Jared) Well...
-(William) Interesting.
(tense music concludes)
I'm gonna check out
some of these walls.
(Carly) Can I come?
Uh, yeah.
(Jared) Isn't this crazy?
(Carly) Yeah. It kind of
messes with me.
-The kids look so cute, and...
-(Jared) Yeah.
God, I don't even know
what I'm doing here.
It's a little...
it's kind of like weird,
you know, to open up
in front of people,
but I don't feel like...
I don't know, I feel like
we didn't really get
to know you. Like, I feel like--
I've been thinking
the same thing the whole time.
You seem very interesting
to me. Here, scoot over.
We need this tea because,
as far as I'm concerned...
-(tense music resumes)
-(indistinct chatter)
I haven't felt a rush
like this in a while.
-Trying to chase another high?
-Yeah.
You don't have to give us
your life story or anything,
-but I feel like-- (laughs)
-(William) Or you do. But...
I feel like we all kind
of like know
why each of us is here.
Like, I mean, like he said
a million times.
-Like, I'm mom.
-(William) She's a mom.
-We know. She's the mom.
-(Kat laughs)
That's like-- But I mean,
like, what...
what brought-- Like, why
do you think they picked you?
Like, what did you write
in your thing?
-You know what I'm saying?
-Yeah, what did you say?
-Yeah, what did you say?
-I only did one paragraph.
-'Cause I'm trying...
-I mean, I just--
...to figure out why they're
picking who they're picking.
I don't wanna get involved
in all that.
-(Carly) Yeah.
-Let's go find Devon's room.
Okay.
What are you gonna do
with the money?
Uh...
Like, what's
your first purchase gonna be?
I, um...
(Kat) I mean that's not
like part of it.
That's like--
But, I mean like, what...
what brought-- Like, why
do you think they picked you?
Like what did you write
in your thing?
(Jared) Oh, man.
-I do not like this--
-(metallic clattering)
-Fuck! Oh, my God.
-(Carly screams) What the fuck!
(Jared panting)
(Carly screaming in distance)
We got separated.
(officer)
You got separated. Why?
(Jared)
I was looking for something
in my bag earlier
and I found this...
This is a new backpack.
Devon's parents sent it like,
two days before I got here.
This doesn't make
any fucking sense.
There's no cell phone service.
(sniffles)
But... I'm getting out of here.
I'm a little freaked out, um...
(sniffles) ...and...
-(loud clattering)
-(Carly) Jared.
I got lost.
I've been freaking out.
(Kat) I don't understand
how she got so far ahead of us.
I don't...
(William) All right,
come this way.
I feel like
we should go this way.
(Kat) Yeah, I don't think we...
(chuckles)
...have much of a choice.
(tense music playing)
(Jared) It's creepy.
It's just like a...
like a playroom or something?
(Carly) There's toys in here.
I wonder if any of these
were Devon's.
(Jared) I don't know. I mean...
(Carly) Did the note
say anything about specific toys
that could be Devons?
(Jared) No, I--
Honestly, it was pretty vague
-for the most part.
-(Carly) Yeah.
(Jared)
I don't think they told us.
(indistinct chatter)
-(Carly) Yeah, It's so dusty.
-(Jared) Yeah.
(Carly) It's been here
a long time. The chalkboard.
(breathes heavily) Fuck.
(Kat) Okay.
(William)
We're gonna stick together.
(Kat) We're gonna stick--
stick together.
(William) I feel like
let's go this way?
(Kat) I feel like that's really
the only way we haven't...
-(William) Okay.
-(Kat) ...gone?
(static)
Oh, what the fuck?
(breathes heavily)
What the fuck is this?
(Carly) Wait.
That's really creepy.
(Jared)
I-- I mean, there's... (sighs)
...there's tons of graffiti
in here.
It could just be somebody's like
tag or something.
(Carly) I don't know.
It's really creepy.
(Jared) Yeah. Um...
(Carly) Let's just try
to find our way back.
(Kat) Okay.
(William) Here come this way,
come this way.
(Kat) Which way did we go?
Did we go that way?
(William) Uh, I don't know.
I feel like, let's just go...
(Kat) Okay, well don't run.
(Jared)
Barely even see anything.
(Kat whispers)
I dunno. I don't even know.
(Jared) They can't
have gone too far, right?
(Carly) No.
This is like...
(indistinct chatter)
(Jared) This place is creepy.
(breathes heavily) No.
What the fuck?
(indistinct distorted chatter)
(Alison breathes heavily)
What the...
(panicked breathing)
(William) We are not
supposed to be here.
Yeah, we are not
supposed to be here.
(Alison) That's goddamn blood.
What the fuck?
(Kat whispers)
I feel like we should go.
Yes, go!
I'm not going first!
(Kat whispers) That's definitely
a person, right?
(William) Yes.
(Kat) I don't want to....
(speaks indistinctly)
(Alison pants)
This-- This is not real.
This...
It's fucking Ali.
-Our Ali?
-(Kat) Our Ali.
Damn.
Wait, what... Ali.
(panting)
Did you do this?
Did you do this?
This is not a fucking joke.
(Kat) I-- I mean, like--
(Alison)
Who brought blood in here?
(William) Um. Okay,
well, let's back up.
This shit isn't funny.
(William) Whoa, whoa, whoa.
How's it becoming about us?
-(Kat) Listen, first of all--
-(William) You're the one--
Shut the fuck up.
I gotta get the fuck outta here.
(William) Why are you
in here by yourself?
(Kat) Wait, is this like Devon's
room or something? Like...
You're fucking with me.
(William) No one is
fucking with you.
-You're fucking with us.
-You're fucking with me!
(William) Yo.
(chuckling)
Something is wrong with her.
But wait, hold on.
We gotta get this.
(Kat) Okay, but...
First of all, it's wet.
So, you're telling me
she just happened
to stumble in on this?
And like, sure like maybe
it's like Devon's room but...
(whispers) You know what?
Did you look at her hands
by any chance?
-(William) No.
-(Kat) Fuck.
(William) Yo, we need
to take it from her.
I wanna see if there's red--
You know what I mean? If there's
-red shit on her hands.
-(William) There probably--
We need to take her camera
and see what she's--
She's been weird
this whole time.
We were literally just
talking shit about her.
Saying that she's
weird and then we come in here,
-she's sitting in the corner...
-(William) My intuition
-is always right.
-...rocking back and forth.
You know what
I'm saying? (laughs)
(William)
Rocking back and forth.
They did that to fuck with me.
(Kat and William laughing)
-Like, nice try.
-(William) She did this.
-(Kat) Nice try, Ali.
-Let's get her, let's get her.
I'm gonna figure out
who wrote that shit.
(William) Ali!
(Kat) I don't really want
to be this way, but...
(William) I don't trust
none of these hoes.
I mean, I think Jared's
like, okay.
Jared. (chuckles)
Jared could have gotten it,
and now he all
in Carly's goodies.
So no, he's canceled.
It's just not, no.
I'm not doing it.
I mean, I think-- Honestly,
I like Jared. I think he's...
(William) I liked Jared.
Past tense.
(both laugh)
I know. I feel like we had kind
of like a rough start.
-(William) We totally did.
-But...
I didn't like you at first.
But I feel like honestly
we kind of bonded over like,
why is this bitch
like lying to us?
Like lying directly to our face
and it's obvious.
-Exactly. Exactly.
-(Kat) It's obvious.
Her.... (whispers) ...answers
were kind of inconsistent.
-Do you know what I mean?
-(William) No, totally.
I don't know
why I'm whispering,
'cause I don't even know
where these people-- But like--
Uh-uh, she's-- she's exed.
I know it was them.
I know it was Kat.
I know it was William.
And they came in the room
and I was freaking out. And...
(indistinct chatter)
I know they put it there.
(Carly)
Oh, my GoPro died, by the way.
(officer)
So, let me ask you this.
You're stuck.
You can't find a way out.
You have no supplies
and no way to call for help.
What's your plan?
There was no plan.
I told you,
we just wanted to help.
(Jared) I mean, look,
is it absolutely
crucial-necessary
that we film everything?
(Alison) The parents asked us
to keep filming.
We have to keep filming.
And we'll have
another light source.
(Kat) I-- I-- Is it...?
I mean, we haven't had
not one clue today.
Wait, Will!
When we got here earlier,
remember you saw that--
that girl?
Wait, you saw a girl?
Why wouldn't you tell us that?
First of all, you need
to not speak for me.
-What color was her hair?
-What color was her--
What do you mean, a girl?
I didn't see a girl.
-(Carly) Girl or a woman?
-I didn't see any girl or woman.
-(Alison) How old did she look?
-(William) I don't know.
-I didn't see anything.
-What height was she?
(William) See why would you
open up your mouth?
Spirits don't like liars, okay?
So, the... the spirits
are gonna come up here
and grab you by your
ponytail if you keep lying.
Guys. It's three a.m.
There's no way it's three a.m.
It was just light.
That's what my watch says.
What does yours say?
-(Kat) No way.
-It's three a.m.
-(William) Oh.
-(Kat) No way!
(Jared) Time flew, I guess.
(Kat) I am not sleeping here.
No way. Mm-mm.
-Because whatever is out there--
-(William) Now I'm not tired
'cause now all of a sudden
everyone wants to start talking
about, "Oh, William saw this.
William saw this--"
(Kat) Well, did you
or did you not see a girl?
I did not see any girl.
-Well we can't go out there.
-(Kat) So she's lying.
I don't wanna go out there.
I never said that.
-(Kat) So she's lying.
-That was probably Carly.
(Kat) Are you lying?
Is that what he said?
You may need
to loosen the ponytail.
It might be pulling some
of your brain cells.
(Jared) All right, man.
Just chill out guys.
-I think we're all tired--
-(Carly) If anyone saw a girl
and is keeping their mouth shut
about it,
then that is a fucking
problem because we're here to,
-you know, get--
-(Alison) Okay. Everyone.
(officer) Listen. Let me just
tell you where I am, okay?
You tell me the truth,
I can work with you.
I'm telling you the truth.
(officer) But if you sit here
and lie, I cannot help you.
(indistinct chatter)
Well, I mean, I didn't
tell y'all this yet,
but I did bring
a little something
that I feel will like,
help us like
-get everything going.
-(Jared) No, no dude I can't.
I don't smoke. I don't do
any of that stuff anymore.
I can't do anything like that.
I'm not saying we need
to do something like that.
I have, um...
I have like a-- a spirit board.
So it... it... it... you see,
I mean, you like ask a question.
-Okay.
-I mean...
-I just don't see the point.
-Well, what did y'all bring?
-(Kat) I mean, I'm honestly...
-What did you bring?
...I am willing to do whatever
-we need to do, so...
-Okay. Thank you.
I just don't see the point
in searching for a ghost.
I don't believe in it.
-Ghosts--
-(William) Why are you here?
Ghosts and spirits
are just ways for people to
try to explain what they
feel is unexplainable.
It's a coping mechanism.
A waste of time, really.
(tense music playing)
Are you okay?
(ghostly voice)
You never leave me,
why are you leaving now?
(distorted indistinct chatter)
(William) All right.
Devon, are you here?
(Alison) I don't know
if you should be
playing around
with that right now.
I think we all have to
actually put our hands on it,
but I mean,
I won't make anyone do it.
Devon, are you here?
Guys, maybe we should
find somewhere else to...
He had this spirit board and...
(William) It was just the
first thing I thought of.
I know. I know
it doesn't make sense, but...
there's stuff down there.
(officer) What does that mean?
It means I don't believe
in this stuff.
(officer) What kind of stuff?
You're going to think I'm crazy.
(Alison) Hand selected, right?
(Jared) Yeah, it's pretty crazy.
(Alison) We have to feel
a little important.
We have to feel some something.
(Jared) Yeah, I definitely feel
like I have a purpose here,
but I don't know.
(Willaim) I mean, well,
I mean, we haven't really
found much yet.
-(Jared) Yeah.
-(William) But I think we will.
Yeah, we have time.
We let them in.
(indistinct chatter)
(ghostly voice) Jared.
Oh my God, we let them in.
(indistinct overlapping chatter)
(breathes deeply)
(baby crying in distance)
(eerie music playing)
(woman) Do you hear that?
(William) Oh! What the...
What?
(Jared) Uh....
This is perfect. Look.
No, no, no. Look, look, look.
You have to think as a kid,
they're trying to play with us.
And we're over here screaming.
(indistinct chatter)
(Alison) I don't think we should
freak out.
-(loud clanging)
-(all scream)
(Jared) I'm starting to freak
out a little bit.
(Kat panting)
(Jared) No, no, no, no, no, no.
I'm not doing all that.
(overlapping panicked chatter)
(Kat) Okay, um...
-I'm like trying to think.
-(indistinct panicked chatter)
(Kat) I don't know. Okay. Um...
I'm like trying to think.
I know what
it sounds like, okay.
(sniffles)
You think I don't hear myself?
(sobbing) I'm not crazy.
(Alison) Which one
of you fucking did it?
(Jared) What are you
talking about?
(Alison) You think it's funny
to fuck with me?
(Carly) Who took our stuff?
Was it you?
None of my stuff is in my bag!
(Alison) Do you think it's funny
to bring fucking blood here?
(Jared) What are you
talking about?
-What do you mean?
-(William) You have problems.
One of you sick assholes did it.
Oh, right, right, right.
There's this little kid chair.
(Alison)
None of this makes sense!
And it says "Devon,
Devon, Devon" on the wall,
and she is freaking
the fuck out about it.
We're like,
"Oh, this is good evidence."
-This is what we came here for.
-It's a clue. It's a clue.
And she's freaking out.
So...
the way she's acting is not--
-(Carly) Fuck it, I'm leaving.
-(William) I'm out, because--
I'm not-- I'm not messing.
I'm down with Carly, for once.
(Jared) Carly! Wait! Don't go!
(eerie whistling)
(Kat shushes)
Shut up. Shut up. Shut up!
(whistling continues)
(Kat) Is that a....
(whispers) I think there's
a fucking person in here.
-I don't know if this is safe.
-(William) Oh, shit.
(Alison) Someone check the door.
(William and Kat)
I'm not checking the door.
(Jared) I'll do it. Here...
(Alison) Gimme your camera.
-(squeaking)
-(mouthing)
(indistinct chatter in distance)
-(music fades)
-(door squeaking)
(Alison chuckles)
There's nothing there.
-(loud screaming)
-(dramatic music playing)
(indistinct panicked chatter)
The sound.
(panicked chatter continues)
The fucking screech.
(indistinct chatter, yelling)
(Alison) There's no way out!
There's no way out!
(Kat) Go, go, go, go, go!
We just-- We just ran.
I don't know where anyone went.
We just ran.
(tense music playing)
(Alison breathing heavily)
Guys, where did you go?
(Carly screams)
Where are you going?
(William coughing)
(officer) You say you don't know
what happened to them,
but weren't you with them?
You said you were all together.
(Alison panting) Fuck.
(Carly) Kat!
Kat! Where's Kat?
(Alison)
What do you mean where's Kat?
-(Jared) Kat?
-(William coughing)
(Carly) Fuck, we lost Ali too.
(sobbing) I don't wanna do this!
-(Carly) She went to find Ali.
-(indistinct chatter)
(William) She don't care
about Ali like that.
I know Kat more than you all do.
(Kat) If something...
If something happens to me,
I just want you to know that...
(crying) I'm proud of you,
and I love you
and I'm so sorry I wasn't...
I just felt like I wasn't
the best mother
and this is the perfect
example of that.
I just wanted
to provide for you.
(Jared) Why... why are we even
looking for them?
Why don't we just
worry about ourselves right now
and try to get out here,
all right?
(William) What do you mean?
We're... we're a group
Well she felt comfortable
running off on her own,
-so why don't we just--
-If you ran off on your own,
we would come to look for you...
-(Jared) No, that's not--
-...Jared.
Yes, that is. Uh-- Do-- Do--
Now you can't speak.
Whatever. I can't.
-(Jared) Hey, hey. Look--
-(Carly) Come back.
(Jared) Fine, fine. Whatever.
(crying) I'm so sorry.
(Elle) Mom?
-Mom?
-(Kat gasps)
(Elle) Mom?
-Mom?
-(Kat gasping, sobbing)
(Elle) Mom?
(Kat sobbing, panting)
Guys!
Please.
(whispers) No fucking way.
(breathes shakily) No.
No fucking way.
What the fuck? What the fuck?
I'm taking this with me.
Okay. You're all right.
Okay, calm down.
It's okay. It's okay. It's okay.
(child giggling)
-(ominous music playing)
-(giggling continues)
(Kat sobbing)
(shouting) Who is there?
(Elle yelling indistinctly)
(Kat) Elle?
Elle!
(William) Kat! Kat!
Kat, where are you?
Kat!
Jesus Christ. (panting)
-(Elle) Mom?
-(Kat) Elle?
-(Elle) Mom?
-(Kat) Elle!
Elle, is that you?
-(Elle) Mom?
-(Kat) Elle!
Why are you hiding from me?
(Elle) Mom? Mom?
Mom?
-(Kat) I'm coming, honey.
-(Elle) Mom?
(Kat whimpers)
(Elle) Mom?
-Mom?
-(Kat) I'm... I'm coming, honey.
(screaming) Where are you?
(sobs)
(coughs) Elle! Where are you?
Elle!
Elle! Elle! Elle!
(ominous music continues)
(distorted, indistinct chatter)
-(Elle) Mom?
-(dramatic sting)
(Kat screaming) Elle! Elle!
(indistinct yelling)
Elle. Please! Elle,
why are you running from me?
No! Elle! Elle, please. Please!
(screaming)
Please, please!
Elle?
Elle, honey.
(screams)
(Alison) Jared.
Oh, God. (panting)
Carly.
Oh, no.
Kat.
-(Kat) Oh, honey. Honey!
-(child screams)
Kat?
Kat. Kat?
Kat?
Shit, okay.
(sobs, screams) Kat!
Kat. Kat.
Shit, okay.
(William) Kat, I'm not playing.
You got three seconds. Come out.
Kat!
(Alison sobbing)
(William) Kat.
Kat?
Okay. Okay. Okay.
Kat...
Kat. Kat, if you're hiding,
it's William. You can come out.
Seriously. Kat!
Kat.
Kat!
Oh, hell no. (screams)
Oh, shit! Oh hell to the no!
Uh-uh. (screams)
Shit. Fuck. Oh, no, no, no, no.
Get back. Get back!
(pants, coughs)
What does it say?
Was that from a Ouija--
R. U.
Run?
Run?
Oh, hell no. Run? I can't run!
I can't run!
(screams)
No!
Back up, Bitch.
Back up. Back up.
Back up! I told you to back up!
(ghostly screaming)
(Jared) No, no, no! Fuck!
How do we end up back in here?
Oh, this can't be right.
I think we--
we have to be taking
a wrong turn or something.
(Carly and Jared panting)
-(Carly) Wait.
-(Jared) God.
Will you put
that thing down please?
Seriously.
Not the time for that.
(Carly) It's my only
source of light.
And besides, this is my vlog
for my fans,
as soon as I get out of here.
(Alison) What fans?
(Carly) You have
an opinion now? Let's hear it.
(Jared) Take it easy.
Take it easy.
(Carly) What is that?
-(Alison) No, don't.
-(Carly) What is it, Ali?
Jared.
Why does she have two cameras?
Why do you have a second camera?
(Kat screaming over camera)
-Where did you get her camera?
-I can't watch this.
(Alison) I don't know!
(Jared) I can't do this anymore.
-(Carly) Jared.
-(Jared) Wait, Carly, wait.
(Carly sobbing) I'm sorry.
Oh, my God!
William!
Please! Guys, where are you?
Guys? Guys!
Kat? William?
Oh, God. Please! Whoa!
(Jared) We gotta get outta here.
(Carly) Oh, my God!
And we only have each other,
so I need you to work with me.
-And for the record--
-We're not gonna make it, Jared.
(Jared) I think we are,
but we've gotta do something.
I mean, they could still
be out there.
They could still be somewhere
in here looking for us.
We have no idea.
But we've gotta do something.
We can't just sit here.
(screams, sobs)
Somebody help me!
Please! What!
(sobbing)
I just want to go home.
Please, can I just go home?
(sobbing)
Please! This isn't
funny anymore!
I can't do this anymore, okay?
Guys! Kat.
(wailing)
I can't.
(panting)
Dad, I'm so sorry!
Please come get me out of here!
Dad!
What the fuck.
Why did I come here?
Please, come get me.
Please, somebody come get me.
Please! Dad!
I'm so sorry.
You've given me everything.
(whistling)
(Carly) Hello? What?
What? What? What? Who are you!
What? What?
Dad! Dad!
Dad! (screams)
No! no!
No, no. I can't die like this.
I can't die like this. (screams)
-(static)
-(music concludes)
(Alison inhales)
We're gonna die here.
We're both just
going to die here.
We're gonna die here, Jared.
(ghostly voice) Jared.
Jared.
(Jared) We should go find them.
Come on.
Come on!
I'm gonna go look for Carly.
Stay here.
I'll be back.
(ghostly voice) Jared.
(ominous music playing)
(Jared) Hello?
-Hel--
-(ghostly voice) Jared.
-(Jared) Hello?
-(ghostly voice) Jared.
-Hello?
-(ghostly voice) Jared. Jared.
Hello?
-(ghostly voice) Jared.
-(Jared) Hello!
(ghostly voice)
It's time to come home.
-Jared, I miss you.
-(Jared) Mom?
-(ghostly voice) Jared.
-Mom?
(ghostly voice)
It's time to come home.
It's time to come home, Jared.
(sobbing) Mom, stop! Hello!
(ghostly voice) Jared.
Come home, Jared.
Come home.
-I miss you.
-Mom! (echoes)
(eerie music playing)
(sobs)
(Jared) Mom.
Mom!
(ghostly voice)
I told you not to go.
(Jared) Mom.
-Jared.
-(Jared in distance) Mom.
(Alison) Jared!
(Jared) Mom, I'm sorry.
Mom, I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
I tried really hard. I just--
-No, no, no. Please.
-(Alison screams)
Mom, I'm so sorry. (sobbing)
(ghostly voice)
It's okay, sweetheart.
It's not okay.
It's not! (sobbing)
-(Alison) Jared!
-(sobbing) No! No, no, no.
-No. No. No! Go. Go. Go!
-Jared! Jared!
-Run!
-(Alison screaming)
-Open the fucking door!
-(Jared) No, no, no.
-Please. Please.
-(Alison screaming)
-Jared!
-No. No.
(sobbing) I can't do it again.
-(Alison) Jared!
-Please.
(Alison screaming)
Open the fucking door!
(both wailing)
(sobs) Jared!
(sobs) Jared!
(screaming, wailing)
Jared!
(wailing)
(wailing)
Jared! No!
Jared, I'm so sorry.
I'm so sorry!
(wailing)
(screaming)
(sobbing) I'm so sorry.
Jared, I'm so sorry.
If anyone finds this tape,
my name is Dr. Alison Roberts.
I'm a psychiatrist...
and if someone finds this tape,
please let them know
that William Edwards,
Jared Stevens,
Kat Rose,
and Carly Carmichael were here.
They didn't vanish.
And it was my... (pants)
(teenager 1) Come on.
(Alison screams)
(Alison screaming, sobbing)
(screaming)
(screaming)
(Alison screaming)
(teenager 2)
What the fuck was that?
-(screaming) Get out!
-(screams)
(screaming) Get out of here!
(screaming) Get out!
(officer) I think you did it.
I know
because I've seen footage of you
walking around that property,
setting up cameras
all over the place.
It was your plan
-this whole time.
-(Alison) No! No!
-(officer) It was you...
-Fuck!
(officer)
...and I need you to tell me.
Okay! I did it!
(officer) You did what?
(Alison) I needed a case study
and I made a website.
All right. I needed volunteers.
They-- They got on,
I contacted them.
(officer) Case study, for what?
I am Dr. Ali, and this
is my first journal log.
I was getting my degree
in psychology.
(sniffles) I was doing
my PhD thesis.
(officer) What does that mean?
And today
is the day... (chuckles)
...that I start getting footage
for my PhD thesis.
I just wanted to know
what would happen
to our minds in there.
(officer) Well, how'd that
work out for you?
(dramatic music playing)
Tell me about Devon, Ali.
Ali.
Tell me.
There is no Devon!
There's no Devon.
There's no parents.
I made it all up.
I made it all up and I'm sorry.
And there's nothing
I can do about it now.
And I can't take it back now.
And I don't know what to do.
(sobs)
Devon, Devon, Devon.
(sobbing) I'm so sorry.
(officer) Tell me where
the bodies are, Ali.
There aren't any. (sniffles)
(officers) There aren't any?
You hid them in that building
because you know
it's gonna be torn down
-in a matter of days.
-No.
(officer) So you hid
the bodies there.
You didn't think you were
gonna get caught.
-(Alison) That's not true.
-(officer) And you got stuck.
And then those two kids
found you
and they brought you here.
I need you to tell me
that you did this.
I'm not lying.
I'm telling you the truth.
(officer) I need you to
tell me where the bodies are.
I'm telling you the truth.
I'm telling you the truth.
(sniffles)
(officer) Let me tell you
what I'm gonna do.
I'm gonna go
find the bodies myself.
I'm gonna go to that building...
(Alison) No. No. Don't go there.
-(officer) ...myself.
-Don't go there.
(officer)
I'm gonna find them myself.
If you go there, you will die.
Do you hear me? You will die!
(officer)
I tried my best with you.
Just know that.
I'm so sorry.
I'm so sorry.
(dramatic ominous music playing)
