[Rachel]
Sometimes the medication
can exacerbate
the symptoms of your OCD,
but if we increase the dosage,
it can help it.
-Again, sorry I was late.
-No, I understand.
A lot of the buses run late
downtown anyway.
How's work?
It's-- it's good.
[Rachel] Great.
Any changes in interests?
Not more than usual.
Um, have you been
reaching out to family?
Naomi, I imagine she's due soon.
She is. October.
How exciting is that?
A Libra baby?
It's really exciting
to become an aunt.
You should grab
some coffee with her.
[phone buzzing]
We have to try reaching out
to those in our past.
Hey-hey!
Oh, hey, girl.
Just wondered
if I could pick up the pages.
I actually haven't finished
them yet, Erica.
I'm almost done.
I have about 11 pages left.
-I'm working on it right now.
-[Erica] Here?
Uh, yeah.
No, no, don't work
on that here. [scoffs]
[James] Hey, hey, Gen.
Do you have my-- Oh, sweet.
Yes, give me, give me, give me.
[Genevieve] Uh, I actually
haven't finished those yet.
I got a bit tied up last night.
Ooh.
Ew, no, James,
not like that.
We all know you're super busy.
Could you just work
on that at home?
Like you said,
it's only ten pages.
[Genevieve] 11.
Well, yeah, but you're almost
done with that one.
[Rachel] It's good for you
to interact with people you love
or just people in general.
I don't avoid them, I just...
I don't need them.
I-- I don't know
if I'll be able to...
I...[groans]
[Rachel]
It can be a difficult disorder
to navigate alone.
Your last therapist said
you were a bit of a loner, too.
[phone buzzes]
Trevor, I'm-- I'm picking up
my notes now.
Just give me two minutes.
Oh, my God, you answered.
[woman over phone] Hello?
I-- is that you?
Are-- are you there?
Hello?
When are you coming back
to see us?
-[breathing heavily]
-[woman] Is that you?
Looks like your last
anger blackout was about...
[clicks tongue]
Sounds about right.
Well, that's great progress.
I'm assuming
you've been applying
some of your stress-managing
techniques we reviewed.
Yeah, it's helping.
[gags]
Come on. It's fine. You're okay.
[Rachel]
I think we should increase
the lithium just slightly.
And by now,
you should have already adjusted
to the symptoms,
so your side effects
will be minimum to nonexistent.
How does that sound?
Sounds fine, Rach.
-[computer chimes]
-[phone chimes]
[Barbara]
Girl, open your e-mail.
Girl, open...
your e-mail.
What is it?
This is what I was going to
tell you about at lunch.
[Genevieve] Uh, isn't it bad
if we lost a ghostwriter?
Oh, no.
It does not take that much
talent to finish this book out.
I mean, the author came in
and completely outlined
what we're supposed to do
to finish the series, so...
So then why do you think
Trevor fired them?
[sighs] Well,
maybe he didn't sound enough
like the author.
Maybe the actual author
didn't like him.
Did you read the last book?
-Yeah, I-- yeah, I did.
-Oh, my gosh.
He was so on the fence
about that ending,
and I was like,
"Just go for it."
And did you see
how long it trended?
So people liked it?
[sighs]
Well, it's not about liking.
It's about trending.
[phone chimes]
So what do you think?
About the ending?
No, about the writing.
They have to
replace this ghostwriter,
and we do not have time
to outsource this,
so it's gonna basically be
about who I want to work with.
I mean, I'll look into it,
but I have a lot--
Oh, yeah, with Erica and James
being little office work sluts?
Gen, they ask everyone
to do their work for them.
You're just the only one
who says yes,
and you know that
they are gonna jump on this.
But you need
to update your portfolio.
I know.
So let's work
together on this, okay?
Send me some samples
when you have time,
and maybe we can go over them
during lunch.
[phone chimes]
-Do you think it could be her?
-[woman] That's her.
I'd know her anywhere.
I thought Dr. Gollum moved away.
We haven't seen evidence
of her work in four years.
Unless someone else is carving
Dr. Gollum into a bloody heel
and stabbing people
in the heart with it.
I'd say that's her.
-[man] Copycat?
-No.
I'd know her work anywhere.
How would you know
her work anywhere?
Because that's my heel.
[announcer] Next week,
on A Book Titled Murder...
[blood splashing]
[man over TV]
Do you want us to start?
[woman] We'll take this
back to the lab...
I think you are on your last--
[Allen] Sounds good, Karen.
[Genevieve]
No, maybe your first.
[overlapping speaking]
[woman] You have to have
a certain personality for it.
[overlapping speaking]
[man] Gen, you are just so...
[indistinct chatter]
[indistinct chatter]
[indistinct chatter]
-[Trevor] Biscotti?
-Um, nut allergy.
What you got for me?
Um, well, I've
finished the fifth book,
and I'm almost done
with season three.
Did you need the fourth?
Oh, no.
I... [chuckles]
...I already got
the set for Christmas.
We-- we all did.
You have a fresh perspective
on the series, then.
What did you think
of the last book?
Well, it did take
a sharp turn there at the end.
Yes, it did.
Uh, how did the audience react?
Oh, they hated it.
[chuckles bitterly]
And it wrote us
right into a corner.
Dead end.
How would you feel
if Dr. Moriarty
was actually in Sherlock's head
the entire time?
I guess I would feel cheated,
like the person I grew to love
really committed
all those crimes.
Yep.
So we lose the audience,
lose the series,
lose the writer
because he thinks it's done,
and 65% of
this publishing house's revenue.
So you need a new editor.
I need a new treatment.
Did-- did you want me
to write it?
I want you to pitch it.
To me.
So how do you unsplit
a personality
and keep a series going
past its original ending?
-Dream.
-James and Erica
pitched a dream 30 minutes ago.
The only thing more overused
than an evil split personality
is a dream undoing bad writing.
Actually, it's called DID.
I have that in my notes.
Twin.
Or Dr. Gollum didn't commit
any of those crimes.
But she's our villain.
Maybe she's not.
Maybe that's how
we get out of this dead end
instead of backpedaling, we add.
Karen and Dr. Gollum
can continue their relationship
while looking for
the real killer,
and we have loads more story
to tell
as we look for the character
we haven't even created yet.
But is this realistic?
How would the world's
leading criminal psychologist
gotten as far as she has
with a split personality?
If we're being
totally realistic,
she would have had it
in book one
and could still function.
But would she have hidden it
this long?
I would.
They'd ruin her life.
They'd take everything from her.
[rumbling]
[Karen] Talk to me, Allan.
[Allen] Hey, K.
Well, there was no other blood,
or any DNA for that matter,
that was not the victim's.
[Stevie] I see the therapist
isn't getting it.
I'm very shocked.
Like you're behind on, like,
everything ever right now.
Good idea. Watch some TV.
Research.
[Stevie] Did you see
what B was wearing today?
You are wasting the fuck
out of that opportunity.
[knocking on door]
[neighbor] Turn it down.
[Karen] Wait.
I think I see something.
[Stevie] Let me out.
[Karen]
Can I see your flashlight?
-[Allen] Here.
-[Karen] What's that?
Oh, my God.
-[neighbor] Behind you!
-Turn it down!
-[knocking on door]
-[Stevie] Let me out.
You know you need me.
Admit it.
[phone buzzing]
I wouldn't answer that.
Shut up.
[Stevie] I won't do
anything bad, I promise.
-Stop!
-[neighbor] Turn it down.
Hey, can you hear me?
I'm gonna call the cops now.
[Stevie]
You're wasting your time.
-Leave her alone.
-Go away.
[Stevie] Let me out.
I can help you.
-[Stevie] Help me help you.
-Go away.
-[Stevie] Let me out.
-Go away!
[Stevie] Come on.
-It's okay.
-Go away, go away, go away.
[sighs]
[ethereal music plays]
I can hear them
echoing in my head.
[Rachel] Let's try to think
of their comments
in a more constructive way.
Perhaps they didn't mean that
you weren't creative
in the office or--
Well, you didn't hear them.
I was creative.
I was really creative.
Am.
Am creative.
How long has it been
since you've written
creatively for yourself?
I tried last night.
Did you?
How'd it go?
Go away, go away, go away.
It ended
in cleaning my apartment.
What if you wrote about
really current events,
like your life?
What do you think?
Like a diary?
It's writing,
and it's writing for you.
We can discuss what you wrote
throughout the week
if you're comfortable with it.
I have a lot of writing to do.
[woman]
Can you tell us what happened?
What's your name, sweetie?
Aimee.
[man] Is that your name, Aimee?
[woman] Do you know
who your parents are?
Aimee, do you know
how long you were wandering
before we found you?
Do you know whose
blood that is?
Has she said anything?
[man] Just her name,
over and over.
Aimee, can you hear us?
Does she have any injuries?
[man] I think we're waiting
to hear back from medical,
but there doesn't appear
to be any immediate injuries.
We need you to talk to us,
baby girl.
-Who did this to you, Aimee?
-Stevie.
[high-pitched ringing]
[sirens wailing]
[audio book narrator]
A Book Titled Murder.
Chapter Five.
Who is Dr. Gollum?
Dr. Emily Gollum
is not a doctor at all.
Or at least, not in any
of the records we could find.
Every witness we interviewed
could only describe her
in the vaguest of terms.
Thickly-rimmed glasses,
slender frame,
and long red hair.
Like yours.
That phrase keeps coming back.
Like yours.
Out there in the city,
a woman, like me,
killed a girl.
A shadow. A doppelganger.
An alter ego.
Some cops
would kill for a nemesis.
I just want to stop her.
Hi. Uh...
can I get the Cloud Nine?
[barista] 5.28.
And there's definitely
no nuts in that, right?
[barista] Dude, it's coffee.
[phone buzzing]
[throbbing]
[ducks quacking]
[audio book narrator]
I woke up in a cold sweat.
Was it a dream? A nightmare?
I couldn't be sure.
As I began to sit up,
a sharp grip of prickly rope
yanked me backwards.
The rope burned
across my wrists.
It wasn't a dream.
I was trapped.
Trapped with no recollection
of how I got there,
and no recollection
of how to get out.
I wrestled with the rope
until I had a shovel...
[man] It's a pretty nice guitar.
[audio book narrator]
I closed my eyes.
It needs
a little tuning, though.
Well, that's only if
you don't know how to play it.
Well, I don't really.
No?
[audio book narrator]
If I had been more alert...
You could show me.
Maybe at back at my place.
[girl] I could teach you
a few things, if you want.
-I can do that.
-Yeah?
[man chuckles] Yeah.
[man] ...What you taste like.
[audio book narrator]
Maybe I would just have to
wait him out.
I listened carefully
for more clues.
As his feet reached
the bottom of the stairs,
I heard the faintest sound
of a woman's voice.
"I saw you today."
Are you referring to me?
Yes, I-- I was.
Do you remember writing this?
Of course I do.
Have you had
any anger outbursts lately?
-Nope.
-Not even at James or Erica?
No, Rachel, not even at them.
I would understand if you had.
They seem to be
real pieces of work,
trying to pass off
your writing as their own.
It's just editing, anyway,
not writing.
You haven't written much.
[sighs] I know, I know.
I've been-- I've been
creatively blocked.
Oh, shit. No, the, uh...
the journal diary.
Uh, about the...
[sighs] It's been
a really long week, Rachel.
I-- I-- I thought
you were meeting my creative--
[Rachel] It's okay.
Gen, it's all right.
Has this reaction been
occurring lately?
Shit. Fuck!
[Allen] Karen,
we have no prints, no DNA.
No addresses, no pictures.
To everyone,
this person doesn't even exist.
She's like a ghost
that you just cannot even see.
But she's still out there.
How do you know this is
not just a bunch of copycats?
Because I see Gollum.
I see her.
Even if no one else can, I can.
This is her,
and she's out there,
and she's dangerous.
Start taking this seriously.
She leaves evidence
that only you can find.
You don't find
that a little odd?
A little peculiar?
What are you trying to say?
I'm just saying
that whoever this is,
they seem to have
some sort of attachment to you.
Well, that's because she...
is...
-me.
-[TV clicks]
[gasps]
[Stevie chuckles]
I see we're trying
the writing thing again.
How exciting.
Writing about Vivi.
What are you doing there?
What are you doing there?
Why can I see you?
You tell me.
You're the one seeing it.
Why-- why do you-- why--
[chuckles nervously]
Why do you look like me?
Oh, that's a stupid question.
Why wouldn't I look like you?
Shouldn't you look different?
Nope. Two peas in a pod.
Yang to your ying,
like twinsies.
[Genevieve laughs]
I'm insane.
Whatcha writing?
[sighs]
Um, my...
chapters that this...
TV series is based on.
That's different
than the one you're editing.
I'm editing, like,
five things right now.
Holy fucking shit, Gen,
you called it her essence.
You should delete that
right now.
Could you go away?
I'm just saying it sucks.
You wanna do it?
Fuck that.
Okay, then shut up and go away.
I'm helping.
I'm just teasing you.
What's your problem?
You're my problem.
No, honey, I'm not
your problem.
Are you drawing tattoos
on yourself again?
You're just not cool
enough for your posse?
You don't have enough edge?
I didn't draw it.
Seriously?
Stevie, we had--
we had an agreement on this.
No, no, no, no, no.
And never ever say posse.
Stop freaking out.
You wouldn't even know about it
if I hadn't told you.
I said nothing permanent.
Your hair covers it.
I probably have "ball sack"
written in Hebrew
on my neck forever.
My God, don't be so dramatic.
It's not Hebrew.
What about these, Stevie, huh?
What about these?
Well, those definitely
are not permanent.
I thought you knew that.
But a baby is, Stevie.
Or-- or fucking AIDS.
[scoffs] You jump right to AIDS.
A whole world
of venereal diseases
and you jump right to AIDS.
How did you do the tattoo?
When?
Remember when
you were gone for three weeks?
After a full week run,
I gave it a shot.
Plus...
we look pretty sexy with it.
You should show it off.
I work.
You try.
Maybe you're seeing me
for a reason.
Maybe you need help.
I can give you insight
into the world
you're trying to write about.
I know way more about it
than you do.
I didn't peg you
for a murder mystery fan.
Mystery? No.
But come on.
You know nothing about
the seedy, sticky, crowded,
underground world of clubs,
bars, sex, drugs, rock and roll.
You're the expert.
If your life is so exciting,
then why are you here
with me right now?
Why aren't you just taking over
and spending the money
only I work for?
If only it worked like that.
I'm tired
of my hangovers, Stevie.
Have you ever noticed
something?
You never say "we."
I do. You say "I."
That's because you aren't real.
Maybe you're not real.
Uh-oh. We never thought
about that, did we?
Well, one of us has to be real.
I get mail. I pay bills.
You don't even have a last name.
I'm Stevie.
It's more iconic that way.
Like Madonna or...
Judas.
-Stop.
-Seriously, though.
You're the one
who has to go to therapy.
Maybe you're just
too perfect to be real, Stevie.
You got me there.
Crazy, jittery, can't socialize,
dresses like she's frigid.
-Who would want to make you--
-All right, enough.
What are they calling you now?
Bipolar?
Yes, and you know I have OCD,
so stop aggravating me.
But you know it isn't bipolar.
It doesn't matter.
I mention you
and I lose everything.
Just shows how much
that therapist knows, huh?
Personally, I think
she's a manipulating psycho.
Shit.
[dance music plays]
[gasps and gags]
[choking]
[Barbara] Woo-hoo, Gen?
Are you thinking about
getting one?
Hm?
A tattoo.
Oh, that-- that--
oh.
-Definitely not.
-I don't know.
I have this, like,
little, like...
mountain-y thing and, like,
a triangle and it's, um...
Truth be told, I was pretty
wasted when I got that, so...
It was in my friend's basement.
That sounds...
Have you, um, watched
A Book Titled Murder show?
Have you watched that?
Oh, yeah, I kind of have to.
It's actually pretty good.
I-- could you give me a rundown
of what's happening
in the next--
Yeah, of course.
See, this is
what I like about you.
You're so involved,
even when you're just doing
a sample writing.
You're already wanting to know
exactly what's going on,
and that's the dedication
I need from my team.
[chuckles] Thanks.
I'm just trying to
write a good sample.
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
Okay, so...
Get ready for this.
Karen and Dr. Gollum,
we come to find out
that they are,
in fact, the same person.
We are reading the books
from her point of view.
Because in those stories,
they find a book
that literally
just says, "Murder,"
and it's written by Dr. Gollum.
-Oh.
-Or is it?
So the outline has us
taking Karen
through this journey
of her coming to terms
with the fact
that she's actually committed
all these murders,
and she's unknowingly committed
all these crimes.
-Okay.
-Mm-hmm, okay?
And, you know what?
I signed an NDA,
so don't tell anybody,
but I'm gonna tell you anyways.
There is no Karen.
[screams] There is no Karen.
Dr. Gollum has been posing
as Karen this entire time,
so that if she gets caught,
she has an insanity plea deal.
I mean, she's been working
from the inside
to cover her tracks
and assure that
she basically
can't get in trouble.
Uh-huh.
Okay, sounds interesting.
So not only are we led
to believe it's DID,
but we're led to believe
it's all made up.
-Exactly.
-For an insanity plea.
Yes.
And the best part is,
no one can get offended.
Oh, my gosh, literally just
wait until you see season six.
It is gonna be bitchin'.
Why is it so cold in here?
Gen, hon...
You're-- you're...
you're a beautiful girl.
But you look terrible.
Are you feeling okay?
Actually, no, B.
I probably shouldn't be here.
I took an EpiPen this morning.
Oh, my God!
Because of the nut allergy.
Oh. Babe, no, no.
Please go home.
Trevor's not
in the office anyways,
and you work better
when no one's bothering you.
-Okay?
-[Genevieve chuckles]
You remembered?
Yeah, duh.
I just really
don't think I can...
All right.
Baby's first pesto.
[Stevie] Guys...
-I think I can have this.
-[girls cheering]
[screams]
[whispers] Tabernac.
[woman over TV muffled speech]
...was in fact, Iranian.
The guard even said
she was speaking Farsi.
I did not think that through.
[woman over TV]
We examined the notes she left.
It says...
[speaking Farsi]
Come on, it's funny!
Fuck you.
[woman over TV]
It translates to,
"I have another book for you."
Do you want
me to tell you about it?
Nope, I got the gist.
It's Hebrew. It's sweet.
It's Italian, you idiot.
You don't even know
what you put in my body.
It means duality.
Kind of an homage to us.
The pesto?
No, the tattoo,
but I see
you found out about the pesto.
-[Stevie sighs]
-No.
I didn't find out.
Did you know that I woke up
in anaphylaxis this morning?
Really? [laughs]
No nuts, absolutely none.
I know, I know.
Okay, I'm sorry. [chuckles]
Allergic to nuts.
Won't eat them either.
Avoiding all nuts.
[Genevieve] I don't need
my imagination choking me.
Did you know
that I am three payments behind
on my therapist?
How am I supposed to pay bills?
Yeah, you should
really pay that. [chuckles]
And get some shutters.
You take all of my money.
[munching] But we document it.
You have an envoice.
Say that again.
You have an envoice.
Spell that.
[laughs]
E-N-V-O-I-C-E.
[grunts] You're so grumpy.
Uh, I'm not seeing
the problem here.
Of course not.
Because you didn't go to school.
[scoffs]
You want to get into it.
[Stevie laughs]
I'm not in your imagination.
Do you even remember
high school?
Or a childhood?
I'm not getting
into this right now with you.
I'm not getting into anything
with you right now.
Because you aren't real.
-You're in here.
-[Stevie] No, Gen.
I'm in here.
-[Genevieve sighs]
-[Stevie laughs]
[Genevieve]
You know what I do remember?
I remember a fucking orgy
I didn't take any part in.
I remember a horde of girls
passed out on a bed.
And some old guy
getting dressed.
When did you see that?
Fucking today.
While I was waiting for the bus.
Great video, by the way.
Yeah, uh, actually,
I-- I do remember that.
[sighs] Last month...
things got a little out of hand.
Um...
sorry.
What do you mean?
Things don't just get
that out of hand.
You're up. Talk.
[dramatic music playing]
Not much to explain.
Things just got
a little out of control.
It was a great party
and it spiraled.
It won't happen again.
[sighs] Sorry.
And you know...
I'll do what I want.
For someone
who believes that I don't exist,
you sure do talk to me a lot.
[Genevieve] Fucking coward.
What did you do?
You always want to bother me
and now you want
to leave me alone?
I don't know what the hell
my body has been a part of.
Stevie!
[mug shattering]
[Genevieve sighing]
[mug clattering]
[groans in pain]
[panting]
[woman screaming]
[Genevieve breathing heavily]
[groaning]
[sobbing]
[panting]
It was maybe five
or six times a month.
It's more like five
or six times a week now.
[Rachel] Okay.
Are you feeling overly stressed?
I mean, I have a lot
on my plate, Rachel,
but this isn't stress, these--
Are obsessions from your OCD.
It's very common.
It's almost what it feels like
to clean up a mess.
Like cleaning up a murder scene.
These are intrusive thoughts.
Do you feel
that we may hurt someone
without knowing it?
[dramatic music playing]
I mean, I can.
Right?
Is that what you're afraid of?
Hurting someone?
Hurting yourself?
Genevieve. Can you hear me?
Where are you?
Rachel, I forgot.
I have to help
my sister today.
Naomi,
you're speaking to Naomi.
-I-- Yep, I really need to go.
-Genevieve.
It's still your turn.
Use it wisely.
[dramatic music playing]
I really need to go.
I don't want to make her upset
and think I forgot again.
I really need to go, Rachel.
[Rachel] Genevieve.
[echoing] You know you can talk
to me about what happened.
It's the reason I am here.
[sighs]
It's my duty.
To protect you.
[Stevie] Stop it.
[exhales sharply]
Where the fuck have you been?
-Stop. Breathe normally.
-I can't.
-What did you do?
-You can. Just stop.
-[Genevieve breathing heavily]
-I-- I didn't do that.
-What is that? Wha-- what?
-You're just imagining things.
You're just working yourself up.
-[exhales] Just help me.
-I'm trying.
-If you would just calm down.
-There's blood.
There's blood everywhere.
Why-- why--
-Genevieve.
-Why was there so much blood?
-Stop.
-On my hair.
-You're making it worse.
-[Genevieve gasps]
[screaming] No!
[elevator dings]
Oh. [grunts]
[door rattling]
[suspenseful music playing]
God, Gen...
[groaning]
Oh, God.
[muttering]
[road din]
[steam hissing]
Oh, I don't miss that.
Bitter. Bitter.
Bitter.
Bitter. Bitter.
[upbeat music playing]
[narrator] Chapter seven.
The Book Entitled Murder.
I stared at the book.
A simple, thin journal,
hand bound with soft paper.
The cover was plain
red leather,
with nothing but one word
imprinted in black.
The blackest black
you would ever see.
The only thing
that was missing was my name.
The final lines,
buried in the back page
after a novel-sized defense
of the evil committed,
seemed to speak directly to me.
I wrote this book
because that girl had to die.
Don't you agree,
Dr. Emily Gollum?
[groans]
[sighs] Go fish.
["white dove" by Koda playing]
Your turn.
I had him bless these hands
just to run you out
Give me strength
when you run your mouth
I've got a home to break
Somebody showed you
all of the horror
You weren't born with it
[woman 1] I was protecting you.
You understand?
-She wouldn't stop screaming.
-[woman 2] So you killed her?
You killed a child?
We killed a child?
[woman 1]
Nobody's going to find out.
We did.
[woman 1] You made me do that.
You don't know
what we've been through.
Left to love
None of us left to love
[groans] It was your turn,
and I don't do mornings.
If I gave too much
and you took too much
But here we both stand,
a gun in your hands
There's blood on the leaves
There's blood on the sands
I feel his grace
slowly running out
Give me truth,
give me a way out
I've got a bone to pick
Somebody showed you
all of the horror
You weren't born with it
Yikes.
You're a silver-tongued
jackboot thug with
White skin but you're
no white dove and you're
Scared of us 'cause we
show you love, 'til there's
It just screams frigid.
None of us left to love
Thank you.
So I guess you're giving up
on the vegetarian thing.
-This isn't vegetarian?
-[Barbara laughs]
Um, what is this place?
Do you come here
a lot?
No, I've never actually
been here during the daytime.
How's your salad?
It's not their specialty.
So have you updated
your portfolio?
Trevor is going to start
going through applications.
What's wrong with my portfolio?
Girl, unless you have been
writing in a closet somewhere,
I was under the impression
that you hadn't written anything
since you transferred
to our department.
But your grammar, though.
Very nice.
I just haven't had
the opportunity
to write for a long time.
I should do that, right?
Yes.
And what about you?
You find time to write?
Well, you know,
the series keeps me pretty busy.
And I do get to be creative.
Except for right now,
because we're waiting for pages.
We don't have a writer,
so we don't have any pages.
Why aren't you the writer?
Hmm.
Do you love what you do?
Yeah, I mean, I'm happy.
I wish I wrote a little more
of my own material,
but I think we all wish that.
I know
that you definitely should.
-You think?
-Hmm.
I've seen your writing samples,
and they're great.
I love them.
Although, it's odd.
What?
You're a grammar Nazi now,
but earlier?
Eh.
Hmm.
Yeah, well, now I'm an editor.
[Barbara chuckles]
You should do it.
-Hmm?
-Write more. We both should.
I can tell
you're a great writer.
You've got this energy,
like nothing fazes you.
Mm. Well, that's facade.
I've gotten better
at hiding it over the years.
Keeps me
from getting in trouble.
[laughs] I feel you.
If you ever want to collaborate,
I am open to seeing
how we work together.
[chuckles] I think I'm trying
not to bring my work
into my home.
I mean, I think,
you know, I mean my work,
like, papers and writing.
I'm not saying that we would
bring my work into home.
I'm trying
not to bring my work at home.
Not you from home.
Not trying to do you.
Not do you.
I think you need a break.
I think you need a break.
Um, maybe we can
get drinks tonight.
-Rasper's?
-How'd you know?
I've seen you there before.
Great place to hang out.
Lots of pretty girls.
And sexy guys.
Pretty people in general.
Great place, great drinks,
and coke-- Coca-Cola.
I knew I saw you there.
Just the one time before.
[laughs]
A friend of mine held me down
and forced me to come.
Lucky friend.
[birds chirping]
[suspenseful music playing]
[indistinct whispering]
[dog barking]
[fingers tapping]
[Stevie sighs deeply]
[Stevie grunts]
[Stevie scoffs]
So...
how long
do these things usually last?
As long as we want them to.
But we usually take
the full hour session.
Mm, a full hour.
I guess time is relative.
I like to keep
a regimented schedule.
No matter
how much better we feel.
It keeps the rhythm.
And you employed,
so win-win, huh?
That has nothing to do
with the length
of the session, Genevieve.
But kinda, right?
I mean, the more time in here,
the more you benefit.
No?
That's what I thought.
That's why I'm here.
Keeping the rhythm.
Have some part of this
to remember and reflect on.
I noticed a little sarcasm
in your tone today.
Nothing out
of the ordinary, Rachel.
Just a typical day
in the neighborhood.
You just don't seem so stressed
like you usually are.
But more on edge.
In a defensive way.
I just want to make sure
you're feeling stable.
Don't I look stable?
I'm meaning in a place
where you feel
in control.
Oh, I am in control
all right. [sighs]
Even if I don't want to be
in this particular instance.
Are we in a state that is safe
for yourself and others?
Such an official question.
When have I heard that before?
Is that written
on the prescription bottle?
Have you had
any thoughts of suicide
or harming others?
[suspenseful music playing]
Gen?
Have you had any thoughts
of suicide or harming others?
[Stevie] No, I'm good.
I'm having a ball.
I know therapy really
isn't your favorite thing.
But you know,
this is your choice.
Yep.
Got it.
[suspenseful music playing]
[Rachel] Tell me about work.
Last time you were here,
you seemed overwhelmed,
a little less confident
and stubborn.
[laughs] You do that on purpose.
Finding the weak point
and stabbing it.
Trying to make
yourself feel real.
I don't know what
your purpose is supposed to be.
But I see your game.
I don't know
what you're referring to.
Frankly, this talk concerns me.
I'm as real as you.
Do you not think
it would be wise to see if sh--
if I was feeling dissociated
or depressed or like a waste of
human space
if you were supposed
to be helping?
Is that how you feel?
She doesn't need you.
Who is she?
-We have it under control.
-Let's take a breath.
-[laughs] Don't fucking do that.
-Drink some water.
This is why
I don't like psychiatrists.
Actually,
I don't know what this is.
Why am I talking to you?
I don't have to do this.
You're not really Rachel.
Did you go see Naomi?
[Stevie gasps]
Naomi?
What do you mean?
Well, I know it's been hard
for you to reach out to family
and you haven't been
answering her calls.
And the last session,
you said you were
planning on going to visit her.
Remember?
You're pulling her deeper.
Have you been taking
your lithium?
Uh, no.
No, I'm not taking lithium.
The shit that made me suicidal.
How do you know about that?
That was a long, long time ago.
Suicidal?
Genevieve,
this is the type of information
you're supposed
to communicate to me.
You could harm yourself
or I could lose my job.
Cut the bullshit, Rachel.
She won't replace you
and you know that.
Why does she know about Naomi?
You're exhibiting
a few behaviors
associated
with your bipolar disorder
and I also see some paranoia
from your OCD obsessions.
This isn't bipolar
and you know that.
Where did you go
to school, Rachel?
Where did you get your Talk
About Your Feelings degree?
She may think
she needs this check-in,
but I don't.
This just makes me feel
more fucking insane.
[book thudding]
[sighs]
I need you
to stop blaming your past self.
I think you need
to take a deep breath
and take some responsibility.
I'm handling this.
Step off.
-Use your stress ball.
-I'm fucking serious, Rachel.
-Step off!
-Have you tried yoga?
[sighs]
[door rattling]
[Genevieve] What did you do?
[sighs] Gen, I swear,
I didn't do anything.
I'm remembering shit
that I had no part in.
I'm seeing stuff that...
-that I didn't do.
-Gen, leave it alone.
There was blood everywhere.
Shut-- shut the fuck up.
-Did you kill those girls?
-Just stop!
J-- You-- you don't know
what you're getting into.
I want to know
what the fuck I'm getting into
because apparently we're getting
into a lot, aren't we?
[echoing] You don't like that
I'm saying the word "we" now,
well, we are in this together,
so what the fuck
did you make us do?
-Did you?
-Did I? Did I what?
Why did you leave
and come back with...
with more problems for me,
leave and come back
with more memories that--
Come back.
Shut the fuck up.
I didn't mean to. [sniffles]
I didn't mean to.
The hackers. Come back.
I don't even know
how I ended up with you.
What you actually are,
but this is my body.
Oh, is it?
Then take it back.
Just step the fuck off.
You don't want to know
where this goes,
so leave it alone.
You know the worst part?
Is that I can't
get away from you.
And you are the worst
human being I have ever met.
And now apparently a psychopath.
So what did you do?
Come back for us. Come back
for us. Come back for us.
Enough.
Enough of this fucking shit.
[Genevieve grunts]
[sighs]
[Barbara] Hmm.
[Genevieve] Oh.
[sighs]
[moans] Good morning.
Uh, good morning.
Wow.
That was incredible.
Yeah.
I hope it was for--
for you, too. [chuckles]
It was a little rough, but...
I liked it.
I'm just gonna take
a quick shower.
[Barbara] Oh, no, you don't.
You smell really good.
[Genevieve breathing heavily]
[Barbara chuckles]
[Genevieve breathing heavily]
-Bee?
-You worked overtime last night.
[laughs] Now it's my turn.
[Genevieve sobbing]
[Genevieve breathing heavily]
[knocking on shower screen]
[eerie music playing]
[Genevieve panting]
[water rumbling]
[eerie music playing]
[groans]
[dramatic music playing]
[breathing heavily]
[water rumbling]
Pick up, pick up,
pick up, pick up,
pick up, pick up, pick up.
[grunts] Rachel, I'm coming in.
[sobs] Oh, God.
I need you.
I need you. I need you.
[panting]
[dramatic music playing]
-You don't need her.
-[Genevieve sighs]
-Stop.
-You don't.
I said stop.
-Was that you in the shower?
-Gen, just go home.
You-- you--
you shouldn't be out.
You're-- you're gonna
make it worse.
[panting] I said stop.
What-- what did you do?
What-- what did you make me do?
Why Barbara?
Seriously,
I'm trying to protect you.
[sighs] Memories would suggest
otherwise, you fuck.
We don't need her.
I do. I do. I don't need you.
[elevator rumbling]
[siren wailing in distance]
[Genevieve breathing heavily]
[ominous music playing]
Oh. [panting]
Oh, my God.
Oh.
Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
I didn't do this.
I didn't do this.
I didn't do this.
I didn't do this.
I didn't do this.
I didn't do, I didn't do.
[panting]
[gunshots popping]
[ominous music playing]
[high pitched beeping]
No!
[pills clattering]
[screams]
[caretaker] Ma'am.
Ma'am.
Ma'am.
If you're looking
for the sleep clinic,
that's on the fifth floor.
-What day is this?
-[caretaker] Wednesday.
You got in the elevator,
the door shut,
they opened back up,
you're laying
on the floor asleep.
Here, girl. Let me help you up.
[Genevieve grunts]
[sighs]
-Have there been any police?
-[caretaker] Um...
I mean,
on the therapist's floor.
Rachel.
Did something happen
in this building?
[caretaker]
Well, before I got here,
there was a bunch of girls
found dead in the basement.
When did you get here?
[caretaker] 2005.
[distorted]
We think it was the super.
[tense music playing]
You sure you don't want me
to call somebody?
Hey, hey,
you all right, baby girl?
[keys jangling]
[disoriented music playing]
[phone chiming]
Oh, shit.
[phone chiming]
[dramatic music playing]
Where's Barbara?
Where have you been?
No one's seen you
in, like, four days.
I know, I know.
Everyone thought
you were hiding from her,
but you see,
I thought you guys had, like--
James.
She got fired.
You knew that though, right?
We were all, like, secretly
interviewing for her job.
Just turns out
that Trevor hasn't really loved
Barbara's work lately.
Congrats by the way.
Where can I find Barbara?
I'm kind of more her friend
than I am yours.
James, please.
Rasper's.
She said she needed a drink.
Or, like, five.
We're all headed over there
in an hour, so if you--
Where is that?
[rock music playing]
[sighs]
Bee.
-Bee, I'm--
-I'm...
still stinky.
Can I just say that I--
I am serious, Genevieve.
Don't.
[indistinct lyrics]
[indistinct lyrics]

You know you could have
just told me all this
-in the beginning.
-And I should have.
I should have. I just--
-I-- I--
-You just thought
it would ruin your chances.
[indistinct lyrics]
Yeah.
You know...
[indistinct lyrics]
I have started
to like you, like...
like really like you.
Oh, you're a snake.
Just like everyone else be.
-Bee, I--
-Hmm.
I just am not myself lately.
Like, more than normal.
Well, I don't like liars, Gen.
I guess I just
didn't peg you for one.
But if you have
nothing else to say,
I need to put a folder
on your seat.
[indistinct lyrics]
[indistinct lyrics]
"Wicked Way by Ma Baker]
You got a wicked way
Now I'm caught
on your spell
It's dark as hell,
eyes without a face
Falling tears down
the drain
Are black as rain
Ooooh
You got a wicked way,
you got a wicked way
Ooooh
You got a wicked way,
you got a wicked way
Ooooh
Ooooh
I see why you wanted to know
so much about the show now.
-Where did you get this?
-Doesn't matter.
-It's good.
-It is?
I mean, it's a little
schizophrenic but...
Not quite.
Checking the grammar?
I just...
hadn't fleshed out the ending
before I turned it in.
The ending's the best part.
Stevie. Woohoo.
Uh, is she talking to you?
Uh...
-She looks familiar.
-Stevie, over here.
I don't know her.
Yeah, I think
she's talking to you.
[indistinct lyrics]
[indistinct lyrics]
You know what?
I think I love the ending
so much now
is because it feels authentic.
It feels like you really know
what you're talking about.
Hi.
Is this a retirement party?
Something like that.
Uh, did-- did I--
did I invite you here tonight?
Well, damn, girl,
it is Wednesday
and I don't need your
permission.
You ready to go?
Uh...
Hey, I'm around.
You buying?
No. Ho.
Uh, I bought last time.
Ho.
You're right.
I was just fucking with you.
Did you take something
before you got here?
No.
I mean, yeah.
Smoked some crack.
The fuck? [chuckles]
you smoke some crack
on a freaking Wednesday night
out of nowhere?
[Miranda] Gosh, you need
to watch that shit.
That's the slippery slope
that my cousin went down.
He was not crack, Miranda.
-Yes, he was.
-No, he was imperiled.
[Miranda] No, it was crack.
Okay, okay, enough bullshit.
Let's get some drinks down.
[waitress] IDs, please.
We come here every Wednesday.
[waitress]
So why do I say this every week?
If you look under 30,
I need to see ID.
Oh, thank you.
Thank you.
You forget yours again?
-Excuse me?
-That looks like one of mine.
-Yeah, that's old.
-No, that's real.
[indistinct chatter]
How about this?
[waitress]
Yeah, right, Stevie?
Uh. [chuckles]
I-- What did--
what did you say?
Girl, listen.
Are you coming to Debs tonight?
-Uh...
-I think she's gonna
head home after this.
You have a prior engagement
if I remember correctly.
Uh, yeah, that's right.
[Carrie]
Another fucking cellar night?
We know you ain't got plans.
Oh, well, she does
for the old cellar man.
-Boom.
-Yeah,
she's gotta feed that pussy.
[Zoe] Bee, come on,
come on, leave her alone.
Whatever she does on her
own time is her own business.
[water flushing]
[bar din]
[indistinct lyrics]
[door creaks shut]
Let me see your phone.
I'm gonna give you
my number in case you need it.
Thanks.
Do you know
what they mean by the cellar?
Or-- or what--
Or where that is?
Well, it's not a speakeasy.
[chuckles] You'll see.
Don't rush it.
And don't smoke crack. [scoffs]
It's bad for you.
I, uh--
It was nice finally meeting you.
[indistinct lyrics]
[phone buzzing]
[slow piano instrumental]
[phone keeps buzzing]
There's two of us.
Like, in me.
There's two of us.
I don't have bipolar disorder
and I've known that.
I'm afraid I've done
something that can't be undone.
And I've ruined relationships
with people I love.
[Naomi] Oh, where have you been?
We didn't know
when you'd come back to see us.
I'm afraid
I've done something bad.
And I'm scared, I've done
more unthinkable things
than I can even imagine.
Do you know what you've done?
No.
She did it.
I can't see
most of the time if she's out
and I'm having flashbacks
of something I don't remember.
[sighs] And--
And I'm scared. She's--
I...
Do you know what you've done?
I think
I've hurt somebody badly.
And I'm scared, Naomi.
I don't know what to do.
I'm seeing blood.
A lot of blood everywhere.
I saw a girl
and then an elevator and--
-and a shower.
-Where's the blood?
I-- [sobs]
[Naomi] Where's Rachel?
[Naomi's voice distorts]
I thought
she was taking care of you.
[muffled, distorted mumbling]
When was the last
time I saw you?
You want something to eat, Gen?
Unfortunately,
all we have is leftover cake.
-Cake?
-[Naomi] It's her birthday soon.
[humming eerie tune]
[stomach grumbling]
[flies buzzing]
Naomi, how long
have you been here--
Shh!
You'll wake her.
[baby cooing]
[ominous music]
[panting]
[screaming]
[breathing heavily]
[baby cooing]
[screaming]
[panting]
[knocking]
[Genevieve sobbing]

[deep breathing]

[crickets chirping]
All right, Gollum.
We're in this together.
Where's the little girl?
Aimee?

Happy birthday, baby girl.
You ready, Aimee?
-Make a bubble.
-[breathes in]
-Did you make a wish?
-Mm hmm.
But I can't tell.
Do you think
Mama Eliza heard my wish?
[kisses]
You are my...
Sunshine
Good night, baby girl.
[echoing] Tell my story...
[echoing] Please
don't take Aimee away...
[man] Hey, baby girl.
[echoing] Please
don't take Aimee away...
Goodnight, Mama Rachel.
[Rachel] Goodnight, baby girl.
Eliza's gone.
She doesn't have anyone else.
You are my sunshine.
Please don't take the baby away.
[Aimee] Naomi.
Naomi.
Naomi.
Big Daddy wanted me
to bring you this.
-[Naomi] What's in it?
-It's cake.
I thought
he was with Rachel tonight.
Aimee. Aimee.
Where is Rachel
sleeping tonight?
Rachel's with me tonight.
She's gonna color with me.
You could stay
in big Daddy's room tonight.
He says you have
to eat it now, though.
[Naomi] What if I don't?
Um, I could ask him.
[Naomi] Just give it to me,
Aimee.
I could eat
your piece if you want--
No!
Okay?
I ate it.
[crying]
[camera clicking]
[screaming] No!
[Rachel] Look,
all I can remember
is the inside of the apartment
and then a back hallway
leading to the stairway.
Wasn't paying attention.
Were you planning
on getting abducted?
Will you both shut up?
Oh, happy birthday,
sweetie. Hi.
Aw, don't be sad, Aimee.
You won't be alone for long.
You'll be an aunt soon.
A Libra baby.
Isn't that exciting?
Give me your hand.
Before you go, I know you don't
like talking about it, but...
She's not gonna do it.
If it happened to Rachel
and it happened to Liza,
it'll happen to us eventually.
-Hey, you want that?
-No.
That day's a lot closer for me
than it is for you.
And being here is not
gonna be a pretty picture
for you regardless,
so knock it off.
What do you mean?
See?
How old, um,
do you turn today, baby?
Thirteen.
She ain't
a baby no more, then.
Thirteen.
Wow, that's, um...
Do you remember when I was 13?
Will it hurt him?
Oh, no, no,
it just makes him sleepy.
And once he's asleep,
you can get the key
from around his neck.
Grab the key
and come right back.
I don't know. How am
I supposed to give him these?
It's your birthday, right?
Make a cake.
But won't he get pregnant?
What?
Uh, no.
Boys don't
get pregnant from cake.
Only girls do.
Naomi, he's coming back.
I can't--
Stay with me.
I need you to stay with me.
This is important.
You know what happened
to Mama Eliza, don't you?
And Mama Rachel?
Did you see it?
You have to do it now,
while he's fixing sinks
on the other floors.
You can't get caught.
He won't touch you, but
you know what he's capable of.
[Martin] Hey, baby girl.
How are you?
What are you doing?
I'm making you a cake.
What's-- what's for dinner?
This is your dinner.
It's your birthday.
We're gonna
have cake for dinner.
Come on. Come on.
It's okay. Sit.
Enjoy.
Your cake
is gonna taste so good.
You're gonna love it.
[runaway] Aimee.
We-- we need you, big girl.
We're running out of time.
This has to happen before it's
your day again and you leave.
I don't think I'm gonna
make it that long, Aimee.
She'll be here by then.
My-- my day?
What do you mean, my day?
You mean when I go to school?
What the fuck is wrong with her?
Stop cursing at me
and stop lying.
I don't go anywhere.
It's Thursday, Aimee.
You know they come for you
on Fridays and I'm Mondays.
[man] She looks
just like her mama.
Can she stay the night?
What do you think, baby girl?
You wanna stay
with Uncle Fredrickson?
Do you want something to drink?
[Martin] Sure.
I'll take
the brown on top, okay?
[liquid pouring]
Oh, less.
Make it less.
This is a really stupid plan.
Chewed up, old sleeping pills?
And you want to do this
before he comes back from the--
There is no time for this.
I can't bring her into
this world, Aimee.
I won't let them take her.
She can't grow up here,
not like you did.
You can come with us, baby.
You can come with us.
[glasses clinking]
[Aimee] I'm sorry.
[Martin] Hmm?
Since it's your birthday cake,
you are gonna get
the very first...
taste of cake.
My daddy wanted me
to bring you this.
Something wrong?
Go ahead and eat.
[girl] What's in it?
Don't you recognize it?
That's Mommy's recipe.
Can-- can you take
the first bite?
I know it's your favorite, so...
[Martin] There you go.
Now you, baby.
[glass clinking]
[cabaret music playing]
You are...
You're getting so grown up.
You look so much like her.
There's something
you have in common.
You know that?
What's up, baby girl?
[tense music playing]

I was in the room.
[Martin coughing]
[breathing heavily]
[rapid heartbeat]
[high-pitched ringing]
Help! Please! Somebody! Anybody!
[gasping breath]
[sobbing quietly]
[Genevieve] Do you know what
they mean by the cellar?
Or-- or what-- or
where that is?
[man] Well,
it's not a speakeasy.
You'll see.
[runaway] You can get the key
from around his neck.
Grab the key
and come right back.
And I didn't.
I didn't remember
until it was far too late.
They were all gone.
I could have saved them.
I should have saved them.
That's all Aimee
was trying to do.
I was supposed to save them.
Just like I had saved Aimee
[distorted]
from Mister Frederickson
every single Friday.
But this time...
This time, all I had to do
was open the fucking closet!
[Aimee] I didn't do this.
I didn't do this.
I didn't do this.
We didn't do this. I--
I didn't do this.
[indistinct].
[Genevieve] No, no, no.
This-- this isn't real.
-You aren't ready to go up yet.
-No, no, no.
-This isn't real.
-You're number three, Gen.
The next brick in a wall
-that protects Aimee.
-No.
Lets her live
a normal life without
the constant memories of pain.
You aren't even
the one in control.
Neither am I.
[Genevieve breathing heavily]
You're not ready to go up yet.
Where do I go?
Do you want
to go back to your room?
They'll miss me at work.
They'll ask me.
You'll be at work Monday,
bright and early.
She needs you too.
-I didn't go away.
-This isn't real.
God, we aren't really here.
It's as real as we are.
Reality isn't the same as real.
It was an accident.
Big Daddy, you're crushing me.
Shh...
[shushing]
You look so much
like Mommy right now.
[inhaling deeply]
[groaning]
I bet you taste like her, too.
[slow heartbeat]
What's that?
[coughing]
[chain clinking]
[heartbeat quickens]
[choking]
[breathing raspily]
-[coughing]
-[heartbeat stops]
[blood spattering]
[sound fades]
[high-pitched ringing]
[runaway] Come back for us.
Come back for us.
Come back for us.
Come back for us.
Come back for us.
Come back for us.
It was an accident.
[Stevie] But we left.
And we didn't come back.
And that's
what I have to live with.
[voice muted]
[chain clinking]
[elevator dinging]
[sighs] Looks like
she's ready to come out.
You need time, Gen.
She can give you that.
She's here to come out
when you need
her guidance and stability.
That's her job.
[Genevieve] Does she know?
About Aimee?
Only if we let her.
But we can't.
You weren't supposed to
know about the past.
Now we need her.
For Aimee.
Now come on.
Let's let this place be.
And I'm sorry.
I didn't want you
to have to know.
I'm sorry about Barbara.
I know.
["white dove" by Koda plays]
[breathing heavily]
I got a bone to pick
Somebody showed you
all of the horrors
You weren't born with it
You're a silver-tongued
jackboot thug with
White skin
but you're no white dove
And you're scared of us
'cause we show you love
Until there's none of us
left to love
None of us left to love
None of us left to love
I had him bless these hands
just to run you out
Give me strength
when you run your mouth
I've got a bone to pick
Somebody showed you
all of the horror
You weren't born with it
I had this Idlewild feeling
in this house
Give me truth
give me a way out
I've got a home to break
Somebody showed you
all of the horror
You weren't born with it
You're a silver-tongued
jackboot thug with
White skin
but you're no white dove
And you're scared of us
'cause we show you love
Until there's none of us
left to love
None of us left to love
None of us left to love
