Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl (2022) Movie Script

(ETHEREAL MUSIC PLAYING)
(ETHEREAL MUSIC CONTINUES PLAYING)
(AUDIENCE CHEERING)
Buenas noches!
And welcome to the Hollywood Bowl!
My name is Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Together with the Oscar-nominated composer
Germaine Franco,
we are responsible
for the music of Encanto.
(CHEERING CONTINUES)
So I'm incredibly proud to be a part
of Walt Disney Animation's
60th feature film
and thrilled to help celebrate
the Walt Disney company's
100-year anniversary.
All of us working on Encanto,
the writers, the directors, the animators,
we had one goal:
To bring the journey of this amazing,
multigenerational Columbian family
to the screen
with all its complexity and talent.
We all brought our own family stories
to the table during production
with all our culture,
and quirks, and specificities.
We hope that you would see
a little of your own family
in the Madrigal family,
that you would hear a little
of your own story in these songs.
I don't think anyone anticipated
a global phenomenon and a concert
at the Hollywood Bowl.
(CHEERING CONTINUES)
Now, tonight we have an evening of firsts.
We made this film during the pandemic,
so this is the first time
the original cast
have sung these songs together
on the same stage at the same time live.
Tonight, for the first time,
we are joined
by amazing Columbian artists,
Andrs Cepeda
and the immortal Carlos Vives.
(CHEERING CONTINUES)
And selfishly, I've heard about
Hollywood Bowl concerts my entire life,
but I'm from Washington Heights,
so I wanted to tell you,
this is my first time
at the Hollywood Bowl.
(CHEERING CONTINUES)
Now, I wanted the show
to be really special tonight,
so we built a casita.
(ETHEREAL MUSIC PLAYING)
Enjoy Encanto!
(CHEERING CONTINUES)
(THE FAMILY MADRIGAL PLAYING)
Make your family proud!
Casita, oh, yeah
Drawers!
Floors!
Doors! Let's go!
This is our home
we've got every generation
So full of music
a rhythm of its own design
This is my family,
a glowing constellation
So many stars
and everybody gets to shine
Whoa, let's be clear
Abuela runs this show
Whoa, she led us here
so many years ago
Whoa, and every year
our family blessings grow
There's just a lot
you've simply got to know, so...
Welcome to the Family Madrigal
The home of the Family Madrigal
We're on our way
Where all the people
are fantastical and magical
I'm part of the Family Madrigal
CHILDREN: Oh, my gosh, it's them!
- CHILD: What are the gifts?
- CHILD 2: I can't remember all the gifts!
- CHILD 3: I dunno who's who.
- All right, all right, relax!
CHILD 2: It is physically impossible
to relax!
CHILD 3: Tell us everything!
What are your powers?
Just tell us what everyone can do!
And that's why coffee's for grown-ups
My Ta Pepa
her mood affects the weather
When she's unhappy
well, the temperature gets weird
- My To Bruno
- We don't talk about Bruno
They say he saw the future
one day he disappeared
Oh, and that's my mom
Julieta, here's her deal
Whoa, the truth is
she can heal you with a meal
Whoa, her recipes
are remedies for real
If you're impressed
imagine how I feel... Mom!
Welcome to the Family Madrigal
The home of the Family Madrigal
Hey, comin' through
I know it sounds
a bit fantastical and magical
But I'm part of the Family Madrigal
Two guys fell in love
with Family Madrigal
And now they're part
of the Family Madrigal
So, yeah, To Flix married Pepa
and my dad married Julieta
That's how Abuela
became an Abuela Madrigal
Let's go, let's go
We swear to always help
those around us
And earn the miracle
that somehow found us
The town keeps growing
the world keeps turning
But work and dedication
will keep the miracle burning
And each new generation
will keep the miracle burning
CHILD: Wait, who's a sister
and who's a cousin?
- CHILD 2: There's so many people!
- CHILD 3: How do you keep them straight?
Okay, okay, okay, okay.
So many kids in this house
So let's turn the sound up
You know why?
I think it's time
for a grandkid round-up
Grandkid round-up
Cousin Dolores can hear a pin drop
Camilo shape shifts
Antonio gets his gift today
MY OLDER SISTERS: Isabela and Luisa
One strong, one graceful
perfect in every way
- Isabela
- Grows a flower the town goes wild
- Isabela
- She's the perfect golden child
- Luisa! Luisa! Luisa! Luisa!
- And Luisa's super strong
The beauty and the brawn do no wrong
- That's life in the Family Madrigal
- Whoa
- Now you know the Family Madrigal
- Whoa
Where all the people
are fantastical and magical
That's who we are
in the Family Madrigal
- Adios
- (AUDIENCE CHEERING)
But what's your gift?
Ha! Well, I gotta go
the life of a Madrigal
Whoa
But now you all know
the Family Madrigal
Whoa
I never meant this
to get autobiographical
So just to review the Family Madrigal
- Let's go
- What about Mirabel?
It starts with Abuela
And then Ta Pepa,
she handles the weather
But what about Mirabel?
My mom Julieta can make you feel better
with just one arepa
But what about Mirabel?
My dad Agustn, well,
he's accident-prone but he means well
What about Mirabel?
Hey, you said you wanna know
what everyone does
- I got sisters and cousins and...
- Mirabel!
My primo Camilo won't stop
- Until he makes you smile today
- Mirabel!
My cousin Dolores can hear
this whole chorus a mile away
- Mirabel!
- Look! Mister Mariano
And you can marry my sister
if you wanna
But between you and me
she's kind of a prima donna
I've said too much
and thank you, but I really gotta go
Mirabel!
- My family's amazing
- Mirabel!
- And I'm in my family, so...
- Mirabel!
- Well...
- ABUELA: Mirabel!
- Oh.
- (AUDIENCE CHEERING)
(ANTONIO GRUNTS)
MIRABEL: Nervous?
You have nothing to worry about.
You're gonna get your Gift,
and open that door,
and it's gonna be the coolest ever.
I know it.
(ANTONIO'S VOICE PLAYING)
(BIRDS SQUAWKING)
ANTONIO: Uhuh-uhuh.
I understand you.
(BIRDS SQUAWKING)
- ANTONIO: Of course I can come.
- (SQUAWKS)
- (ANTONIO GIGGLES)
- (SQUAWKING CONTINUES)
(ANTONIO'S VOICE CONTINUES)
ABUELA: I knew you could do it!
A gift just as special as you.
(EMOTIONAL MUSIC PLAYING)
(GASPS) We need a picture!
Everyone! Come! Come, come, come, come!
It's a great night! It's a perfect night!
Everyone, together!
- ALL: La Familia Madrigal!
- (CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS)
(AUDIENCE CHEERING)
(WAITING ON A MIRACLE PLAYING)
Don't be upset or mad at all
Don't feel regret or sad at all
Hey, I'm still a part
of the family Madrigal
And I'm fine, I am totally fine
I will stand on the side as you shine
I'm not fine, I'm not fine
I can't move the mountains
I can't make the flowers bloom
I can't take another night
up in my room
Waiting on a miracle
I can't heal what's broken
Can't control the morning rain
or a hurricane
Can't keep down
the unspoken invisible pain
Always waiting on a miracle, a miracle
Always walking alone
Always wanting for more
Like I'm still at that door
Longing to shine like all of you shine
All I need is a change
All I need is a chance
All I know is I can't
Stay on the side
Open your eyes
Open your eyes
Open your eyes
I would move the mountains
Make new trees and flowers grow
Someone please just let me know
Where do I go?
I am waiting on a miracle, a miracle
I would heal what's broken
Show this family something new
Who I am inside
So what can I do?
I'm sick of waiting on a miracle
so here I go
I am ready! Come on, I'm ready
I've been patient
and steadfast and steady
Bless me now
as you blessed us all those years ago
When you gave us a miracle
Am I too late for a miracle?
(AUDIENCE CHEERING)
- WOMAN: Luisa, can you reroute the river?
- LUISA: Will do!
- MAN: Luisa, the donkeys got out again.
- LUISA: On it!
LUISA: (GRUNTS)
MIRABEL: (GROANS)
Luisa! (YELPS)
Wait a second!
(SURFACE PRESSURE PLAYING)
I'm the strong one, I'm not nervous
I'm as tough
as the crust of the earth is
I move mountains, I move churches
And I glow
'cause I know what my worth is
I don't ask how hard the work is
Got a rough indestructible surface
Diamonds and platinum
I find 'em, I flatten 'em
I take what I'm handed
I break what's demanded, but...
Under the surface
I feel berserk as a tightrope walker
in a three-ring circus
Under the surface
Was Hercules ever like
"Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus"?
Under the surface
I'm pretty sure I'm worthless
if I can't be of service
A flaw or a crack,
the straw in the stack
That breaks the camel's back
What breaks the camel's back? It's...
Pressure like a drip, drip, drip
that'll never stop, whoa
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip
'til you just go pop, whoa
Give it to your sister
your sister's older
Give her all the heavy things
we can't shoulder
Who am I if I can't run with the ball?
If I fall to...
Pressure like a grip, grip, grip
and it won't let go, whoa
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick
'til it's ready to blow, whoa
Give it to your sister
your sister's stronger
See if she can hang on a little longer
Who am I if I can't carry it all?
If I falter
Under the surface
I hide my nerves and it worsens
I worry somethin' is gonna hurt us
Under the surface
The ship doesn't swerve
as it heard how big the iceberg is
Under the surface
I think about my purpose
can I somehow preserve this?
Line up the dominoes
a light wind blows
You try to stop it tumblin'
but on and on it goes
But wait, if I could shake
The crushing weight of expectations
Would that free some room up for joy
Or relaxation or simple pleasure?
Instead, we measure
this growing pressure
Keeps growing, keep going
'Cause all we know is
Pressure like a drip, drip, drip
that'll never stop, whoa
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip
'til you just go pop, whoa
Give it to your sister
it doesn't hurt and...
See if she can handle
every family burden
Watch as she buckles and bends
but never breaks
No mistakes
Just pressure like a grip, grip, grip
and it won't let go, whoa
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick
'til it's ready to blow, whoa
Give it to your sister
and never wonder
If the same pressure
would've pulled you under
Who am I
if I don't have what it takes?
No cracks, no breaks, no mistakes
No pressure
(AUDIENCE CHEERING)
MIRABEL: Ta Pepa? If only Bruno...
If he had a vision about someone,
what would it mean for them?
PEPA: We don't talk about Bruno.
MIRABEL: I know.
It's just hypothetically, if he saw you...
PEPA: Mirabel, please,
we need to get ready for the Guzmns.
MIRABEL: I just wanna know
if it was generally positive
or, like, less positive...
- FLIX: It was a nightmare!
- PEPA: Flix!
FLIX: She needs to know, Pepi,
she needs to know.
PEPA: We don't talk about Bruno.
FLIX: He would see something terrible.
And then... (MAKES TICKING SOUND)
Boom! It would happen.
PEPA: We don't talk about Bruno.
MIRABEL: What if you didn't understand
what he saw?
FLIX: Then you better figure it out,
because it was coming for you.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING)
(WE DON'T TALK ABOUT BRUNO PLAYING)
We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no
We don't talk about Bruno, but...
- It was my wedding day
- It was our wedding day
We were getting ready
and there wasn't a cloud in the sky
No clouds allowed in the sky
Bruno walks in with a mischievous grin
Thunder
- You're telling the story or am I?
- I'm sorry, mi vida, go on
- Bruno says "It looks like rain"
- Why did he tell us?
In doing so he floods my brain
Abuela get the umbrellas
- Married in a hurricane
- What a joyous day, but anyway
We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no
We don't talk about Bruno
Grew to live in fear
of Bruno stuttering or stumbling
I can always hear him
sort of muttering and mumbling
I associate him with the sound
of falling sand, ch-ch-ch
It's a heavy lift
with a gift so humbling
Always left Abuela
and the family fumbling
Grappling with prophecies
they couldn't understand
Do you understand?
Seven-foot frame rats along his back
When he calls your name
it all fades to black
Yeah, he sees your dreams
and feasts on your screams
We don't talk about Bruno, no, no, no
We don't talk about Bruno
He told me my fish would die
The next day, dead
No, no
He told me I'd grow a gut
and just like he said...
He said that all my hair
would disappear
- Now, look at my head
- Hey!
No, no
Your fate is sealed
when your prophecy is read
He told me that the life of my dreams
Would be promised and someday be mine
He told me that my power would grow
Like the grapes
that thrive on the vine
ye, Mariano's on his way
He told me that the man of my dreams
would be just out of reach
Betrothed to another
- It's like I hear him, now
- Hey, sis
- I want not a sound out of you
- It's like I can hear him now
I can hear him now
Um, Bruno...
Yeah, about that Bruno
I really need to know about Bruno
Gimme the truth
and the whole truth, Bruno
Isabela your boyfriend's here
Time for dinner
- It was my wedding day
- It was our wedding day
We were getting ready
- And there wasn't a cloud in the sky
- No clouds in the sky
(OVERLAPPING SINGING)
He told me that my power would grow
- Like the grapes...
- Thunder
- ...that thrive on the vine
- I'm sorry, mi vida, go on
Bruno says "It looks like rain"
- Why did he tell us?
- In doing so he floods my brain
Abuela get the umbrellas
Married in a hurricane
What a joyous day
Don't talk about Bruno
Why did I talk about Bruno?
Not a word about Bruno
I never should have brought up Bruno
(AUDIENCE CHEERING)
Thank you! Gracias!
MIRABELA: Some of us have bigger problems,
you selfish...
- (ISABELA GASPS)
- ... entitled princess!
ISABELA: "Selfish"?
I've been stuck being perfect
my whole entire life!
And literally, the only thing
you have ever done for me
- is mess things up!
- Nothing is messed up!
You can still marry that big dumb hunk!
I never wanted to marry him!
I was doing it for the family!
(ALL CHEERING)
(WHAT ELSE CAN I DO? PLAYING)
I just made something unexpected
Something sharp, something new
Uh, Isa, this is the part where we...
It's not symmetrical or perfect,
but it's beautiful
And it's mine
What else can I do?
Wait, bring it in, bring it in
- Good talk, bring it in, bring it in
- What else can I do?
Free hugs, bring it in, bring it in
I grow rows and rows of roses
Flor de mayo by the mile
I make perfect practiced poses
So much hides behind my smile
What could I do if I just grew
what I was feeling in the moment?
Do you know where you're going?
What could I do if I just knew
it didn't need to be perfect?
It just needed to be
And they let me be
A hurricane of jacarands
Strangling figs
- Fig!
- Hanging vines
- This is fine
- Palma de cera fills the air
As I climb and I push through
What else can I do?
Can I deliver us a river of sundew?
Careful, it's carnivorous
A little just won't do
I wanna feel the shiver
of something new
I'm so sick of pretty
I want something true
Don't you?
You just seemed
like your life's been a dream
Since the moment you opened your eyes
How far do these roots go down?
All I know are the blossoms you grow
But it's awesome to see how you rise
- How far can I rise?
- How far can you rise?
BOTH: Through the roof to the skies
Let's go
- A hurricane of jacarands
- Whoo!
Strangling figs
- Go
- Hanging vines
- Grow
- Palma de cera fills the air
As I climb and I push through
What else? What else?
BOTH: What can you do when you are
Deeply madly truly in the moment?
Seize the moment, keep going
What can you do when you know
BOTH: Who you want
to be isn't perfect?
But I'll still be okay
Hey, everybody clear the way
- I'm coming through with tabebuia
- Tabebuia
- Making waves
- Making waves
- Changing minds
- You've changed mine
The way is clearer 'cause you're here
and well I owe this all to you
What else can I do?
Show them what you can do
What else can I do?
There's nothing you can't do
What else can I do?
(AUDIENCE CHEERING)
(MAGICAL MUSIC PLAYS)
ALL: I love to sing
I'm Jessi and I'm the director
of Elemental Choir.
It's a dream. It's a dream job.
Let's do one more.
They are young, but they understand
the beauty in the song we're singing.
I love Encanto because there's a lot
of family stuff that's happening.
They have some issues on the way,
but they solved
those issues during the movie.
- And it's really funny.
- Yeah.
- There's some really funny parts.
- Yeah, it's a very funny movie.
BOTH: Well...
- You go first.
- You go first.
Okay, I'll go first.
I like the part about Bruno
- like where was like kind of...
- Bruno...
Yeah, he was kind of like cast away
'cause like no one really
kind of like believed him.
JESSI: Many of them are fluent in Spanish.
Dos Oruguitas was definitely their pick.
We posted a video
of them singing it online
and could've never imagined
what would happen next.
So this is gonna be a big moment for them.
So, singers,
I just want you to know how much
I appreciate your hard work.
And I have someone very special
to tell you
just what you're going to be doing.
Hello, hello, hello.
Hi, kids. It's Lin-Manuel Miranda.
I-I wrote the songs for Encanto,
and I just wanted to tell you guys,
first of all, we saw the video
of you performing the song
and you're all amazing.
Second of all, we're doing
this big concert at the Hollywood Bowl
and, uh, the great Sebastian Yatra
unfortunately can't join us,
uh, we got the incredible Andrs Cepeda,
and I was thinking
maybe you guys could sing with us live
at the Hollywood Bowl.
(KIDS GASPING)
Welcome to the family Madrigal
See you soon.
(KIDS CHEERING)
My mind is like blown right now.
I'm so excited.
It's like a chance...
one chance of a lifetime, you know?
(MAJESTIC MUSIC PLAYING)
(INDISTINCT CHATTERING)
It's the Hollywood Bowl.
WOMAN: We're gonna practice
walking out on the stage.
- Oh, my God.
- (SCREAMS)
It's real.
Oh, my gosh, it's real.
- BOY 1: Oh!
- GIRL 1: That's so cool.
BOY 2: I want to play.
GIRL 2: This is amazing.
(OVERLAPPING DIALOGUE)
WOMAN: This is line one right here.
(INDISTINCT CHATTERING)
MAN: Kids in their lines.
- BOY 3: We gotta go.
- GIRL 3: I don't know.
MAN: Everyone looking forward.
(KIDS VOCALIZING)
First of all, couple quick announcements.
Fantastic rehearsal.
You listened to everything I said.
And you sang with beautiful tone.
I love it.
What?
(KIDS SCREAMING)
LIN-MANUEL: Hi, kids.
How are you?
Are you ready to perform
for the Hollywood Bowl?
KIDS: Yes!
You're like my hero...
GIRL: When we saw you,
everybody in the room was freaking out.
LIN-MANUEL: Really?
(OVERLAPPING DIALOGUE)
Do you feel ready?
KIDS: Yes!
This is a movie about family.
So while we're on that stage,
we're all one big family. Got it?
KIDS: Yes!
Before you go on stage,
I want you to look
to the person next to you on one side,
then to the next and say,
"I got your back."
Say "I got your back."
KIDS: Got your back.
LIN-MANUEL: Look to your left,
to your right.
Thank you, guys.
I will see you all on stage.
(KIDS CHEERING)
PEPA (GASPS): No, no, no!

(DOS ORUGUITAS PLAYING)
(IN SPANISH)
Dos oruguitas enamoradas
Pasan sus noches y madrugadas
Llenas de hambre
Siguen andando y navegando un mundo
Que cambia y sigue cambiando
Navegando un mundo
Que cambia y sigue cambiando
Dos oruguitas paran el viento
Mientras se abrazan con sentimiento
Siguen creciendo no saben cundo
Buscar algn rincn
El tiempo sigue cambiando
Inseparables son
El tiempo sigue cambiando
Ay, oruguitas no se aguanten ms
Hay que crecer aparte y volver
Hacia adelante seguirs
Vienen milagros vienen crislidas
Hay que partir
y construir su propio futuro
Ay, oruguitas no se aguanten ms
Hay que crecer aparte y volver
Hacia adelante seguirs
Vienen milagros vienen crislidas
Hay que partir
y construir su propio futuro
Dos oruguitas desorientadas
En dos capullos muy abrigadas
I was given a miracle.
I asked my Pedro for help.
Mirabel...
(ELEMENTAL CHOIR VOCALIZING)
...he sent me you.
(IN SPANISH)
Ay, mariposas no se aguanten ms
Hay que crecer aparte y volver
Hacia adelante seguirs
Ya son milagros rompiendo crislidas
Hay que volar hay que encontrar
Su propio futuro
(CROWD CHEERING)
(ALL OF YOU PLAYING)
we need a new foundation
It may seem hopeless
but we'll get by just fine
Look at this family,
a glowing constellation
So full of stars
and everybody wants to shine
But the stars don't shine they burn
And the constellations shift
I think it's time you learn
You're more than just your gift
And I'm sorry I held on too tight
Just so afraid I'd lose you too
The miracle is not some magic
that you've got
The miracle is you,
not some gift, just you
The miracle is you
ALL: All of you, all of you
- Okay, so we gonna talk about Bruno?
- That's Bruno
Yeah, there's a lot to say about Bruno
I'll start, okay
Pepa, I'm sorry 'bout your wedding
didn't mean to be upsetting
That wasn't a prophecy,
I could just see you were sweating
And I wanted you to know
that your bro loves you so
Let it in, let it out,
let it rain, let it snow, let it go
That's what I'm always saying, bro
Got a lotta 'pologies I got to say
Hey, we're just happy
that you're here, okay?
Come into the light,
triplets all reunite
No matter what happens
we're gonna find our way
Yo, I knew he never left,
I heard him every day
(VOCALIZING)
What's that sound?
I think it's everyone in town
Hey
- Lay down your load
- Lay down your load
- We are only down the road
- We are only down the road
We have no gifts but we are many
And we'll do anything for you
- It's a dream when we work as a team
- All of you, all of you
- You're so strong
- Yeah, but sometimes I cry
So do I
I may not be as strong
but I'm getting wiser
Yeah, I need sunlight and fertilizer
Come on let's plant something new
and watch it fly
Straight up to the sky let's go
The stars don't shine they burn
The constellations glow
The seasons change in turn
Would you watch our little girl go?
She takes after you
Oh
Hey, Mariano, why so blue?
I just have so much love inside
You know I've got this cousin too
Have you met Dolores?
I'll take it from here, goodbye
You talk so loud
You take care of your mother
and you make her proud
You write your own poetry
every night when you go to sleep
And I'm seizing the moment
so would you wake up and notice me?
- Dolores, I see you
- And I hear you
- Yes
- All of you, all of you
- Let's get married
- Slow down
All of you, all of you
Home sweet home
I like the new foundation
It isn't perfect
- Neither are we
- That's true
Just one more thing
- Before the celebration
- What?
We need a doorknob
We made this one for you
We see how bright you burn
We see how brave you've been
Now, see yourself in turn
You're the real gift, kid, let us in
Open your eyes
(IN SPANISH)
Abre los ojos
What do you see?
I see me
All of me
