Hearts Around the Table: Shari's Second Act (2025) Movie Script
1
[music starts] Hey
Can't help but
feeling this way
Won't let the
moment go to waste
I take a breath and just say
All right
We make it better every
day the journey starts
Hello?
Good morning! This
is Evan James.
I was wondering if I could
speak to Ms. Adams-Champlain?
Uh, no Champlain
anymore, just Adams.
[Evan] Okay, Ms. Adams...
Actually, you know what?
Just Shari.
Okay, just Shari.
You know, I will call
you whatever you like
so long as the checks clear.
[Shari] Checks?
Sorry, hold on.
Okay... Hello?
[Evan] Still there?
- Jenna!
- Hello!
[Shari] Hey, Jenna,
are you close?
I'm at post A in terminal 3.
On no, that was today? Are
you at the airport now?
Yeah. Today. Now.
Me and all my worldly belongings
I just brought back from Zurich.
Wait. I thought Josh was
coming to pick you up.
That's what he said last
week at Sunday Supper.
And you believed him?
He just texted me.
He told me that you
were coming to get me.
Unbelievable.
Okay, hold on.
Let me get rid of this
person on the next line.
Hello?
Please don't hang up. I'm
calling from the Artists' Co-op.
[Shari] Sorry, I just
have my hands full.
I'm at the airport and every...
[Evan] The Artists'
Co-op Studio.
Your application,
it was approved.
What? Really?
[Evan] Really.
An artist had to leave for
a last minute residency.
So, the studio is
available tomorrow.
Thank you. Thank you thank you!
I will be there!
[Evan] Well then,
congratulations.
Can you drop off
your paperwork today?
I will text you all
the details, okay?
Okay, great! Bye.
Hello? Hello?
Hey, Jenna. I am back.
I'm going to patch Josh in.
Okay, you might get cut off.
I'm going in the elevator.
Go for Josh.
Why did you say that
I'm picking up Shari?
Hey Shari.
Okay, what's going on?
Jenna, that's what we decided.
You would pick up Shari.
- Who decided?
- Me and Shari.
Look, Jenna, Josh. Don't
even worry about it.
I lugged this stuff all
the way from Europe.
I can manage to
get it to Angie's.
Wait! Wait wait wait wait
wait! You're here now?
She's at the airport now, Josh!
She just came back from bringing
home all her worldly belongings.
It's fine, okay.
Trust me, this luggage
is nothing compared to
the relationship baggage
that I just dealt with, so.
[Josh] You should not
be doing this alone.
I am so sorry, I can't
come and pick you up.
Jenna, can you make it work?
I'm in Washington!
Okay. I love you guys. I'm
just going to take a cab.
Okay? Well, maybe two.
Oh! Someone's on the next line.
Hey, Kiki! Josh and Jenna
are on the next line.
Let me put you through, okay.
Shari, okay, so how was
it packing all your stuff
from Europe and was it
awful seeing David again,
or was it kind of like closure?
You know what guys?
I'm just going to call
you from the cab because
I am dying to get to Angie's.
I'm so sorry.
How are you not in
Jenna's car yet?
- Jenna forgot.
- Josh forgot.
Well, I didn't forget.
But the food truck
is still hooked up
and they won't let me park
it in the park and fly.
You guys are impossible!
Well they are. I am
actually possible.
- K, love ya!
- See ya soon.
Byeeee!
Love you too. Bye.
Wow! What?
Guys...
How could we forget
to pick you up?
You're our favorite
globetrotting sister.
Especially when you're moving
back from your ex's house
halfway around the world.
No one should
shoulder that alone.
[Josh] You got a
lot of bags there.
Did you just took the
whole luggage carousel?
[Shari laughs]
Believe it or not,
I actually got rid of a lot
of things before I came.
At least you'll have more than
four pairs of pants to wear.
I am borrowing those shoes!
Oh you guys...
[welcoming words and hugs]
How did you end up with
so much stuff over there?
I thought the diplomatic
corps was meant to
move everything back for you.
Yeah, it was sort of my fault.
I think I thought that by
leaving all this stuff with
David it meant that we were
going to reconcile one day.
You know, I really thought
that when I got over there
things were going to
be different with him
and we were going to patch
up our marriage and...
And now?
And now it is over for sure.
Humiliating.
Well you can stay here
as long as you want.
We will help you unpack and
sort through all your baggage.
And luggage.
[they chuckle]
Thank you, but, um,
I actually already got
approved for a new apartment.
I'm going to be staying in
the Artists' Co-op building.
Fantastic!
Well, before you leave we
will still have time to dig
that new garden bed.
I get my keys tomorrow.
Tomorrow?
I know.
Rory was just starting to
like having you around.
What am I doing now?
Ah, nothing you.
I need one of these.
So, for sure I'm good here?
You are good here.
A little table
setting would be nice.
Pizza will be here in a bit.
Pizza?
Yes!
[Shari] I gotta swing
by the Artists' Co-op
but I'll be back
in time for pizza.
I heard pizza!
[Josh chants]
We're having pizza!
We're having pizza!
We're having pizza!
This is what I needed. This
right here, right here.
This is what I missed.
This is what I needed.
I needed this.
[knocking]
Hello?
Hello?
I guess it's just me.
Here we go.
Home sweet home.
[sizzling and popping]
Ah!
Oh, that is not a great start.
Well, at least I have
one spark in my life.
[Evan] Hello.
Hey!
Hi!
Oh, I have paperwork that
I was supposed to drop off.
They told me to come
by, take a look around.
I hope it's okay?
Yeah.
I'm Shari, by the way.
Evan.
Nice to meet you.
Um, welcome to the
building, Ms. Adams.
Shari. Just Shari.
Sorry about the mood lighting.
It's just a reality of working
in one of these
historic buildings.
They require a lot
of maintenance.
It's worth it, though. Right?
It's beautiful. Who
wouldn't want to live here?
[Evan] Yeah, well,
you'd be surprised.
A lot of people want these
old buildings torn down.
But there's so much
history and life
and inspiration in these walls.
All you really need to
know is your way around
one of these breaker boxes.
And a hammer and a wrench.
And I have you for that?
[breaker snaps]
[Evan] Ah, there you go.
Easy enough. Just
a blown breaker.
You know, when they hire such a
handsome handyman to, you know,
take care of things, it says
a lot about the building
and the owners.
Thank you!
I think so too.
The paperwork.
Can I just leave this with you?
Yeah. I'll have the
keys for you tomorrow.
Okay.
So, same time, same place?
Same time. Same place.
Okay.
Bye.
You have a good one.
Yup.
Nothing like great pizza!
Actually, this is
from a new place.
Rory, what do you think?
I'm not sure. I think I need
about seven more slices.
That's a good call.
That good, huh?
This good!
Okay, great.
Well, I have never met a
pizza that I don't like, so.
How was school this week, Rory?
It was good.
Josh says if I keep growing I
could do high jump next year.
Hmm. High jump?
That's a thing?
Oh, it's a thing.
It's a big thing.
We'll have you come
to a few practices.
I think you'll pick
it up pretty fast.
Yeah, he will for sure.
Kiki, want to share your news?
Yeah, um, well, I'm glad
you liked the pizza guys,
because I just spent
my whole savings on it.
[Jenna] Your whole savings!
What's in it?
Oh, no no no.
I bought a pizza oven
for the food truck.
Wow!
Oh, that's great!
Congratulations.
So, this is your pizza?
Yeah.
- It was amazing.
- It's so good!
Please tell me you
banned any pizza with
just vegetables on it.
Okay. Despite what
you may think,
human beings need some form
of vegetable in their diet.
This is true. We do.
They do go nicely
with meat though.
Exactly my point.
Boom!
Shari, do you want to
share your news next?
Yes.
Um, actually, I just got
approved for my own apartment.
So I'm going to be moving into
the Artists' Co-op building.
- Wow!
- That's awesome.
- That's great.
- Thank you.
And, ah, I know it's been a
rough couple of months for me,
so I want you guys to know I
appreciate your support so much.
Okay.
[Angie] Let's raise our glasses.
New chapter!
Cheers!
I think this calls
for some ice cream!
What do you think?
You think everything
calls for ice cream!
- It does.
- I want strawberry!
Oh, yes! Save some for me.
I'll take Rory's too.
What?
He just told me he doesn't
like ice cream anymore.
It's okay, Rory.
You can have mine.
[laughter]
[soft music begins]
[song "I'll Take Care of You"]
There were times I
couldn't fall asleep
without you sitting near
In those moments I
thought loneliness
was all that I could feel
I couldn't see
it at the time
but you always
pulled me through
You took care of me
I'll take care of you
When you were kids, the others
would busy themselves with TV,
and video games and sports,
and I'd find you
here, all cozied up.
Creature comforts, I guess.
And your artwork is really cool.
You have great taste.
Well, eclectic
taste, but thank you.
Each piece emotionally moves me.
Yeah, exactly.
They all speak to me.
You know, that's what good
art is supposed to do.
At least that's what my
college professor told me.
Wow, art college.
It feels like a lifetime ago.
I just remember feeling
so free to create.
But now...
No, that's still in you.
Sometimes life gets so busy,
we don't get to put
our spirits first.
Yeah, exactly.
Thank you...
For taking me in when
my life fell apart.
Again.
My door is always open.
It's kind of a core
commitment for a foster mom.
But you go above and
beyond, all the time.
You shaped us.
My love for art,
that's because of you.
Because you saw that in me.
You saw the problems coming
in my marriage, didn't you?
Yes.
But I kept that to myself.
Some things have to
be lived through.
Well, you were right.
And now here I am,
right where I started.
You know, Eddie and I
built this house together
and when he died I
couldn't imagine going on.
But then my life opened
up and got bigger.
And filled with more love than
I ever could have dreamed.
[sobbing] See?
You're the perfect example
that nobody needs a partner
to have love, right?
Ah no. No. I didn't mean that.
I believe in loving partnerships
and that we need them.
And you will have them.
We're just each on our own path.
I am definitely on
my own path now.
You certainly are.
But you have all of us
to go along with you.
Even Josh?
Even Josh.
[laughs] Even Josh.
You called?
You have such big ears.
Ah!
My large brain pushed
them out of my head.
[Shari] Oh you really do
know exactly what we mean.
So, how did your track meet go?
Oh, you know.
Not much to tell but
there's this one student.
His name is Kyle.
I mean, this kid could
be a star sprinter,
but for weeks now he's
been distracted, you know,
not living up to his potential.
Some days he's focused and
he runs from his heart,
and others, he barely
shows up at all.
Teens can be such a
mystery, even on a good day.
Yeah, but I'm the coach.
I'm supposed to have
all the answers.
Through my humble experience,
I don't think teens want
to be told the answers.
They just need someone
to show up, consistently.
And be patient.
Be very very patient.
Ah...
Well well well.
[Kiki] Just as I thought.
You are trying to get out of
doing dishes again, aren't you?
Whoa whoa whoa!
That's been his main
move since high school!
- Thank you!
- It's not a move.
I have more important
places I need to be.
Oh yeah.
Or more, like, important
sports playback to watch on TV?
Oh yeah! Exactly!
Okay, we're going to do the
dishes together tonight!
[good natured complaining]
Some things never change.
Teamwork, I suppose.
[Josh] Yeah, we'll
all do it together.
It'll be so fun.
Well, it's all yours.
Thanks.
My family is going to come
and drop my stuff later.
But I was wondering
if you have any idea
when the water in the
bathroom is going to be fixed?
Oh, yeah.
Um, we have a plumber
coming in very shortly.
Everything should be up
and running in 10 hours.
But in the meantime,
there's a cute indie
coffee shop down the road.
Ah, to use the restroom?
For the inconvenience.
First few coffees are on me.
No, I can't make you do that.
Please, I insist.
It's really nice
having you here.
An artists' co-op
wouldn't able to survive
without artists
actually living here.
And I can't survive
without coffee.
So thank you.
I really think I'm
going to like it here.
I hope so.
Do you have a lot
of stuff to move in?
I do.
It's a little all over
the place right now.
Fair enough.
So, what's your specialty?
Well, I'm still trying
to figure that out.
I went to art school and
I love painting portraits
in my sparetime,
but I'm trying to make
a career out of it.
Well, seems pretty promising.
But I will say this.
I am no model and I do
not like to sit still,
so don't get any
ideas. All right?
Fair enough.
Yeah, so, if there's anything
else you need help with,
just let me know.
Okay. Thank you.
Oh, uh, Evan?
I did have one question.
I need to grab
some art supplies,
and I've been out of
the country for so long
that I have no idea
where to start.
I know it's a little out of
the realm of caretaking duties,
but do you have any ideas?
You know, I actually
do know a spot.
Um, I'm heading to that end
of town if you want to join?
Um, yeah.
I won't say no to that.
Meet me in the
parking lot in ten.
Sounds good.
All right.
Thanks again.
Well, it's a start.
Oh!
You ready?
I didn't know there was a
dress code for the art store.
Well, my coveralls were dirty.
Come on. You look great!
This is your car?
Last I checked the ownership.
[they both chuckle]
Thank you.
[Shari] I have never seen
so many fantastic supplies
all in one place.
I'm glad you liked it.
No, it was incredible.
It was such a dream.
Thank you so much.
I owe you one.
Of course.
I have a silly question for you.
How do you choose your colors?
Ah, well, I paint portraits,
so I tend to stick to
the colors of humans.
Fair.
[they both laugh]
[Lindsay] This is
my house blend.
My pride and joy.
Hey, I thought I was
your pride and joy?
Oh Evan, you first,
then my coffee.
Shari, I'd like to introduce
you to my grandmother,
Miss Lindsay James.
Ms. James! Nice to meet you.
Yeah, she actually owns the cafe
and Shari is one of the
new artists at the co-op.
Ohhh.
Well, please call me Lindsay.
I'm an artist too.
Let me see what
you got in there.
Oh, ah, yeah.
The place was incredible.
So much to choose from I
needed a second basket.
Girl it looks like you
replenished your entire supply.
Did you leave anything
for us starving artists?
I'm starting over so I
needed to restock completely.
I have my first commission.
- That's wonderful.
- Uh huh.
Starting over? What
were you doing before?
Evan! Manners.
No, it's, it's okay.
Um, I don't really know
what I was doing before.
My husband is a diplomat
so we traveled a lot.
We stayed in some amazing houses
and they had these beautiful
important portraits.
And I think they inspired me.
So I started painting portraits
of ambassadors and
vendors at marketplaces.
Pretty much anybody
who would sit for me.
So are you stationed
back here in DC now?
Um, not stationed.
I moved back to Maryland
and my husband is
stationed in Singapore.
Well, ex husband.
I haven't really said
that out loud yet.
So now I'm moving into a
one bedroom apartment...
By myself.
Well, the co-op is
a wonderful place.
You chose a good place to grow.
That's the plan.
I'm a little bit of
a work in progress.
Aren't we all?
You know, Nana is actually
a pretty celebrated artist
in her own right.
- Oh, really?
- Uh huh.
I wouldn't say celebrated.
She used to paint
portraits and landscapes.
All sorts of things.
I went wherever inspiration
led me throughout the years.
You understand.
Yeah, well, I would love
to see some of your work.
Well, I would like that too.
But unfortunately I have
no idea where my works are.
I had to sell a
lot of my paintings
for practically pennies when
I was a struggling artist.
And I don't paint anymore.
I just don't have the
heart for it, I'm afraid.
I'm so sorry to hear that.
Let me tell you something.
Never sell yourself
or your art short.
Remember that.
Now, would you let me
see some of your work?
Oh, well, yeah, sure.
[Shari] There you go.
Oh!
She is amazing.
Thank you.
May I?
Oh yeah, of course.
Oh! Beautiful work.
All right, Kyle, let's
improve on that time. Okay?
You feeling good? You ready?
All right, here we go.
Three. Two. One.
[Josh blows whistle]
Go! Go go go go!
What's going on, buddy?
You've been a beat
behind for the last week.
Starts are usually
your strongest point.
I don't know. [sniffs]
What? Nothing's going on?
You know, the team is counting
on you for the upcoming meet.
Especially in the relay.
Yeah, I'm just tired, I guess.
What are you, staying
up too late gaming?
I do that sometimes too.
[scoffs] As if.
All right, look.
State finals could put you
on track for a scholarship.
You want that, right?
Hey, come on, you
can't give up now.
Well it won't change anything.
If I win, it won't
change anything.
Whoa, Kyle, hey!
Kyle.
[phone rings]
[Shari] Hey!
Hey Shari! So, how's
the new studio?
Is it all cosmopolitan
and bougie?
Well, I wouldn't use those
words to describe it,
but yeah, it's pretty great.
Well, when the lights work.
Oh, well, have you met
anyone else in the building?
I did meet this guy.
[Shari] He's kind of
the caretaker, I think.
I mean, he was
really nice at first
and then a little standoffish.
I don't know. It's
all very confusing.
Hmmm. Interesting.
Do tell me more.
Was he cute?
Kiki, really?
What?
Oh! Kiki. Pick a color.
Ah, yellow!
Yellow...
Yes, yes. That's
it. I love it!
Well, you sound excited.
I am. It's this studio!
Okay.
All right. Enough
about me. Tell me.
How's your food truck coming?
Oh, you know me.
I'm just, obsessions
of a caterer.
[Kiki] I've already tried
18 different combinations
of cheese, and don't even get
me started on the pepperoni.
Well, if you need anyone
to test the menu...
Oh yeah.
No, but, um, Shari, the
reason I called is, um,
I need some advice.
Okay.
But if you want
relationship advice,
I'm just telling you right
now, I am not your girl.
[chuckles] No. Um...
It's my first foster mom, Dawn.
She just passed away.
Oh, I am so sorry.
I know that she was a lot older.
That's why you came to Angie's.
Yeah, um, she and Phil
retired to Florida.
He passed away when
I was in college.
But now she's gone too.
It feels kind of weird.
We lost contact after
I moved in with Angie.
I mean, do you think I
should go to her service?
Well, do you feel like you
should go or do you want to go?
Kind of both.
Well, I'll tell you that when I
lost my parents, I was so young.
The funeral was awful.
[Shari] I don't remember
all of the people that came
but I do remember the
people that didn't.
So, I'm sure that
Dawn's family would be
happy to have your support.
[Shari] But you have to
do what's right for you.
Thank you.
It's just, I didn't really
think I could ask Angie.
Oh, I'm sure you could have.
But you know I'm
always here for you.
[Kiki] You know,
you're the best!
I'm sorry, I have to run,
but I'll talk to you soon?
Okay bye.
Bye.
Hi ladies. So sorry.
Jenna is right.
Pillows do help.
Okay.
[loud bangs]
[loud bangs]
I am trying to create here!
[Shari] Hello?
[loud whirring noise]
Oh, hey Shari.
Ah, sorry about the noise.
Did you not get the work notice?
What work notice?
I'm trying to start on
some of my own work.
And all of this noise is
not conducive to creativity.
Yeah, I'm sorry about that.
You know, I tend to keep to the
daytime hours when it's comes
to the loud work.
The artists here like to
work during the nighttime.
So they don't really mind
the noise during the day.
[loud whirring noise]
Well, other artists.
Hey, I...
[loud whirring noise]
[noise stops]
I know that you've
been really nice to me.
Okay, and the rent
is really great here,
but I'm going to need
to speak to the owner
or the head of the
co-op or something
because this isn't
going to work.
Well, you're looking at him.
Wait. What?
Why didn't you tell me
you owned this place?
I don't like being misled.
Okay, well, technically,
I didn't mislead you.
I mean, you don't remember
my voice from the call?
Just Shari.
Um...
Okay, so...
What is all this anyway?
Some kind of project?
Yeah, it's, just working
on a little display area
for the artists here so they
can showcase whatever they want.
That's actually really cool.
Thanks.
Uh, do you want to
give me a hand here?
Ah, yeah, okay.
Just grab this.
Right here?
Thanks.
Yeah.
So, if you really
own this place,
why are you doing
all the dirty work?
To cut the costs for
the artists and myself.
I do most of the
maintenance work
and the carpentry.
Whatever I can learn off of
online videos. [chuckles]
What's the catch?
- Catch?
- Yeah.
Why are you investing so much
of time and money and energy
into something so generous?
I mean, I know how
much the rent is here
so you are not making
much of a profit.
Yeah. That's for sure.
So, why do you do it?
Satisfaction?
Hmm...
Okay, look, I'll admit I have
received some pretty generous
offers to sell this place and
watch them tear it down and
redevelop the land into those
soulless, boxy condominiums.
Please don't tell me
that you are selling
and I have to look
for a new home again.
No no! I am not
selling this place.
I don't want to see
them tear this down.
My grandfather actually
built this place.
Really.
Yeah, he left it
for me in his will.
He was the architect.
Wow.
He wanted to create a
place for artists to be,
you know, creative.
My grandmother, she
started painting here
at the beginning of her career.
And then other artists came
in and they started the co-op.
That's really lovely.
Yeah, it's nothing big,
but one day I'll do a
redevelopment in a big city.
Oh, that sounds like a big plan.
I grew up with my grandparents.
They're the only family I have.
So, it's only right that
I honor their history.
So, what do you hope
to have in here?
You know, paintings, sculptures.
Really whatever anyone wants.
I just want to create a space
for amateurs and professionals.
That's really great.
[Shari] I think you
can think bigger.
What if it could be
like an adaptive space?
[Evan] Hmmm.
You know, I could help you
with a few ideas, if you want.
Well, I'm open to
any inspiration.
Well, we all need that.
Okay, I have so many ideas!
First and foremost, lighting.
We want to create a mood.
So I'm thinking spotlights
on every single canvas!
Wait, is this yours?
Ah, yes, if you like it.
If you don't, we can
just keep moving.
No, I love it. It's amazing.
Thank you.
Okay, come on. I have
to show you something.
And it's a little personal.
But I think you're
going to like it.
Okay, pick a color, any color.
Okay.
Now everything begins
with a blank canvas.
Where should we go?
Anywhere.
Now, imagine if every
visitor to the Share Space
got to contribute to one
piece of art like this.
Yeah, I miss finger painting.
Preschool was the best.
See exactly!
Kids love it,
and adults get to fall in
love with it all over again.
Yeah, I mean,
there's so many ideas
that I'm coming
up with right now.
There's so many things we
could do in that space.
Yeah.
Well, if you like this, I got
to show you one more thing.
It's a little something
that I'm trying out.
Okay.
What do you think?
Um... It's interesting.
Okay...
What do you see?
Uhm...
I will go first.
I see...
Smoldering embers
threatening to catch fire,
and storm clouds churning.
But will it stoke the
fire, or douse it?
Ah, what do you see?
Um...
I see ketchup.
[laughs] What?
Like a sandwich
that's fallen apart.
Or maybe I'm just be hungry.
No, I totally see that too.
Yeah. Like, the
crust is over there.
Yeah yeah right.
[Shari] And then
those are the pickles.
- Exactly.
- Definitely the pickles.
Uh huh.
Okay. Come on.
I know a really
great pizza spot.
[Shari] Okay, so, why don't
you grab a picnic table?
Pizza's on me.
You know you don't
have to do that.
No worry. I get a
sweet discount here.
All right. Well, next
one's on me. Okay?
Deal.
[Evan] Oh, by the
way. I love pepperoni!
Pepperoni. Okay!
- Hey Kiki!
- Hey!
One cheese, one
pepperoni, please.
Yeah, coming right up.
Is that the caretaker
slash owner guy?
Yes.
Wow! He is cute.
Stop it.
I'm going to text Jenna
about this right now.
No don't! There's
nothing to tell.
I was kidding.
But just for the record, I
think you should go for it.
Well thank you.
But you do know the
ink isn't even dry
on my divorce papers, right?
Message received and
just pizza for today huh?
- Thank you.
- Okay.
I know that's hard for you.
Very funny.
Look, thanks for listening to
me about Dawn the other day.
Yeah, of course. That's
what sisters are for.
So, how's the
studio coming along?
Oh, I still have not found
the right number of pillows.
But I will.
Hmm. Well, I'm sure that Jenna
can help you out with that.
I'm sure she can.
Well, enjoy your
pizza date with your
cute caretaker slash owner guy.
- Not a date.
- Uh huh.
Oh, I owe you Kiki!
- Aw!
- Thank you!
What!
I'm cooking up payback for you.
Just you wait till
Sunday Supper!
Hi!
[Shari] Someone
call for a pizza?
Or two? [laughs]
This is yours.
Cheese please!
Wow, this looks amazing.
I know it looks like
a lot but take a bite.
Uh huh. See.
You want another box, don't you?
Uh huh.
[they both laugh]
So, an ex husband.
Uh huh.
Who lives in Singapore?
Yep.
Okay, if you haven't
been able to tell,
I'm trying to get
to know you here.
So if could give me
like a little bit more.
Well, I think the ex
part speaks for itself.
I had an old life and
now I'm starting over.
I'm sure being
married to a diplomat
must have had its perks.
Yeah, it did.
But it was rough too.
You know, I had to
put my life on hold.
And I missed my
foster family so much.
You were in foster care?
Yeah.
My parents died in a car crash.
Oh.
Yeah.
I was a regular kid in a
regular suburban neighborhood,
living my high school
freshman life when boom,
it was all over.
Wow. I'm sorry to hear that.
Yeah, no, it's okay.
My parents just didn't
have any siblings
so there was no one
to take care of me.
But, Angie took me in.
And Jenna was
already living there.
But Josh and Kiki,
they came later.
Well, thank you for
sharing that with me.
Yeah. Thanks for listening.
Of course.
Now, I have a question for you.
Oh oh. Another one.
Yes, another one.
It's not that bad, okay?
Okay.
Um, on Saturday, do you
want to, would you care to,
join me for a little rummaging
at some antique shops.
You could find some new
things for your studio.
Um...
That kind of sounds
like a couples thing
and I just got out
of a really messy...
Oh, no no no no.
No. I promise you this
is anything but that.
Now, if I'm being
quite honest with you
my version of foraging is a
single person activity, so.
[Shari chuckles] Okay.
This is more of a
friendship type of activity.
You can do your own rummaging.
[laughs]
Okay.
- I'm in.
- All right.
Saturday it is.
[they both laugh]
[Shari] It's not a date.
[Evan] It's not a date.
[they both laugh]
So, what brings you back
to our little nook tonight?
The owner of the co-op building
asked me to go antique
shopping with him.
I see.
And you said?
Yes. Because he's a nice
guy and I need furniture.
But now I'm rethinking it.
Is this a date or am I
just overcomplicating it?
Because I can't even
consider dating right now.
My marriage just ended and
how can I be sure that
I won't get hurt again?
You can't.
But I'm not really sure
going to an antique store
constitutes as a date so,
I think you should just go and
not think too much about it.
Okay.
Okay.
What if I'm supposed
to be alone?
When I married David
I was so sure that I was
doing the right thing.
But then I realized all I was
doing was following his dreams,
and he wasn't very
interested in mine.
So how, how can I trust myself?
I have no idea what I'm doing.
A little secret.
No one does.
[Shari] Okay, this
box is donate.
And over there on the
couch, we can do keep.
Keep, yeah.
So, how about this one?
Ah, keep.
Keep. All right.
Oh!
Oh, I love this one!
Oh, now I can totally see you
at all those fancy events.
Yeah.
I don't know where I'll
ever wear that again.
I get it.
Starting all over is hard.
And I'm sorry, sorry that
you'll never go anywhere fancy
with anyone nice, ever again,
even if you live to 110.
I'm kidding!
[laughing and squealing]
You can keep all the ugly
ones. That one right there.
[Shari] Just for you.
For me...
Thank you. Thank you.
Of course.
You'll be okay.
[laughing and squealing]
[bell rings]
[Shari] This place is adorable.
It's pretty cool, right?
Yeah. Are you like some
antique picking pro?
I mean, you really do
this every weekend?
Almost. You know,
I figure my grandmother's
paintings are somewhere, right?
So I just keep my eyes
open and look when I can.
I know the odds are slim, but
it's kind of like
playing the lottery.
My version.
Well, people win the lottery.
[laughs] I mean, I don't
know anyone personally,
but I hear it happens.
Yeah, well, fingers crossed.
I think it's really
beautiful that
you do this for
your grandmother.
Yeah, if I could find
one of her paintings,
it'd be like giving her back
a younger version of herself.
I got to find one.
It's one of those things
that's just so simple
but would make her so happy.
Ah ha! [laughs]
What? You found one?
No, but check this out!
[laughter]
You can find the craziest
things at these antique shops.
Like to think, this was actually
hung in someone's house!
I would like to know
the reasons how and why
that ended up in
someone's place.
I couldn't tell you,
but I'm sure it will be in
someone else's very soon.
Well, I hope it makes them
laugh every time they see it.
[they both laugh]
You know, there's so much I'd
love to do with the Share Space.
When I first started making it,
it was for artists
and their families.
But the more I work on it,
I think I'm making it
for my grandmother.
Aw, that's really sweet.
Yeah, she loves the building.
I just hope it will
inspire her to paint again.
Yeah, I'm sure it will.
That building is so special.
There's just so much
good energy there.
It's so inspiring, you know.
I know my family would love it.
Remind me, it was two sisters
and one brother, right?
Ah! A little bit more than that.
Sometimes I lose count.
Angie's place was
kind of a safe haven
for a lot of kids growing up.
You know, we're
all so different,
but we're family, you know.
I always wanted a big family
when I was growing up.
You're lucky you have
that kind of support.
Yeah, I guess I am lucky.
We have this huge group chat.
[chuckles] You have to
see how it goes sometime.
Oh boy. I can't imagine
what kind of conversations
go on in there.
[Shari] Exactly what
the Share Space needs.
A good bench!
What do you think?
[knocks on bench]
I think we're on to something.
Yeah?
I think we might
have found our bench.
I think so too.
Hey. Kiki's almost ready!
Okay.
You know what, I actually
need some advice.
On your love life?
[scoffs] No! No.
Uhm, no, no, no not that.
It's um, it's my star sprinter.
I don't know how to reach him.
What grade is he in?
He's a sophomore.
I tried to talk to him the
other day, but honestly,
I think I approached
it the wrong way.
And now he's missed
the last two practices.
Well, is he happy
with track and field?
Yeah, I think so.
I mean, Angie,
you got to see this kid.
When he puts his heart into
it, he practically flies.
How are his grades?
What's going on at home?
I mean, he worked hard in
my math class last year,
but I don't really know much of
Kyle's life outside of school.
He does seem more tired
than last year, though.
You know, when you came to stay
with me all those years ago,
you worked very hard to hide the
pain you were feeling at home.
You weren't very good at it.
I wasn't?
If you want to find out
what's happening on the track,
you might need to look into
what's happening off the track.
Makes sense.
You're pretty smart,
you know that?
Yes, I do.
Okay.
You know, I don't think Kyle
needs an athletic coach.
I think he needs
someone to listen.
Yeah, but how am I supposed
to get him talking?
What would my 15
year old Josh need?
[Kiki] Salad is coming up!
[Shari] Yumm!
Never mind the salad.
Who's this guy you've been
spending so much time with?
Me? What?
What are you talking about?
Kiki said you had lunch
with a boy the other day.
A cute boy.
[Kiki] It's called payback.
And I do believe I
mentioned that the other day
when you made off with my pizza.
Uhm, okay, fair enough.
[Shari] This, ah, man...
Cute man.
[Shari] You guys are impossible.
This very good looking man is
the owner of the studio building
that I just moved into.
He also runs the Artists' Co-op
and I am just helping him set up
a small space in the
lobby of the building.
That's it.
Tell us more.
There's nothing more
to tell. We're friends.
They went antiquing
the other day.
Wow!
Oh! Domestic already.
See, domestic. That's
exactly what I told him.
I knew that that was too
much of a couple's thing.
Okay, I needed furniture for my
new apartment, okay, and he goes
to this antique store all
the time, so I went with him.
It was not a date.
Although we did buy a bench.
Hmm. That sounds
like a date to me!
Nooo.
I bet he bought you coffee.
A muffin.
[Jenna and Kiki
together] Date!
Guys, seriously,
I'm not in any mood
to start any kind of
relationship right now.
You should just go for it.
You deserve to be happy.
I am happy. I have you guys.
We know you're happy but she's
ended a long relationship
and you need to go through
that process of letting go.
Finding Shari again.
Yeah. Exactly! Thank you.
So, can we change
the subject now?
Actually, I was just
going to ask if you and...
[Kiki whispers] Evan.
His name is Evan.
Evan, want to go on a double
date with me and Andrew?
Wow! There's that word again!
- [they all laugh]
- [Shari's phone pings]
Oh! Saved by the bell!
Oh wow!
What? What is it?
Evan just found one of his
grandmother's paintings.
Okay and...
Um... It's up for bid
at an auction tonight.
And we have to
get that painting.
I have to change.
But we're just setting
up for Sunday Supper!
No, you guys, you
guys don't understand.
Evan's grandmother gave those
paintings up for like nothing
when she was young, and Evan
has been looking for them
his entire life!
Hence the antiquing.
So, ah, can you, can you just
tell Angie that I am so sorry.
I will catch up
with you guys later.
Mwah, mwah, mwah. Love you. Bye.
You're very excited
about someone
you're not excited about.
Yeah, it is just about
the painting, right?
Not the boy!
[Shari yells] Exactly!
Don't forget about
our double date!
[they laugh]
You know, I've
never actually been
to one of these high
end auction houses.
Have you?
No, not like this.
You know, I keep having
this reoccurring nightmare
that I am going to
accidentally raise my paddle
and bid a thousand dollars
on some ugly candlestick.
Okay, that's a
very specific fear.
I am an artist.
I have a very vivid imagination.
Look! There it is!
Oh wow!
I found it.
The needle in the haystack.
Your grandmother is
going to be so thrilled.
It's beautiful. She really
is an incredible talent.
[Evan] Yeah, this is
the farm she grew up on.
[Auctioneer] Ladies
and Gentleman,
the auction will
begin in five minutes.
Please take your seats and
have your paddles ready.
Okay, take the paddle.
I don't want to be
responsible for it.
[laughs]
All right. Ready.
Up next we have item 39.
A landscape oil on canvas
by one Lindsay James.
[Auctioneer] Bidding will
start at one thousand dollars.
[Auctioneer] I have
one thousand dollars.
Do I have one
thousand five hundred?
[Auctioneer] To the
gentleman at the back.
You're good. You got this.
Two thousand.
[Auctioneer] Two
thousand dollars.
Have I got three?
Three thousand five hundred!
[Auctioneer] Three
thousand five hundred.
Have I got four?
Ten thousand dollars to
the gentleman at the back,
Mr. Berardi.
What are you doing?
Maybe I can defer
on the mortgage
at the co-op for next month.
You can't do that.
You can't risk your
grandfather's building!
Ten thousand dollars going once.
I'll sell my car.
You need your car!
Going twice!
I can't just let this go.
Stop.
Your grandmother wouldn't
want you risking any of that.
[gavel bangs] Sold! The
Lindsay James is sold to
the gentleman at the back
for ten thousand dollars.
Thank you, Mr. Berardi.
On to lot 40.
[Shari] Okay. Okay,
you got to let this go.
Just let it go.
I was right there.
I was so close.
I know, it's not fair.
But I'm sure you'll
find another one. Okay?
[shouts] Will I?
Look, I'm sorry.
No, no, I am sorry.
I think this was
kind of my fault.
I don't think I should
have gotten involved.
Shari, it's not your fault.
I appreciate you for
looking out for me.
Ah, you know there is this
really amazing burger joint
right around the corner.
The least I can do
is buy you dinner.
Hanson's?
Oh, you know it.
I do love their fries.
Well let me let you
in on a little secret.
Those fries fix anything.
- Anything?
- Anything.
[school bell rings]
Hey, have a great night.
Kyle! Hey!
We missed you at
practice yesterday.
Listen, I'm sorry
about last week.
It was hard to see you off
your game and I screwed up.
I didn't know what to say.
It's okay, Coach.
Well, look, I was wondering if
maybe you wanted to kick around
a soccer ball at the
park on Saturday.
I can't.
I have to take care
of my little sister.
You should bring her too!
I'm sure she'd have fun.
Maybe.
Hey, do you take care
of your sister a lot?
Nights and weekends.
Dad has to work
more since Mom died.
I'm sorry.
That sounds like a lot of
responsibility for you.
You shouldn't have to
do all that on your own.
[phone ringing]
Hi David.
What's up.
Well I guess I was just
thinking I felt bad
about not helping
you pack your things.
Bad timing I guess.
Yeah, I guess.
So, what time is
it in Singapore?
10:15 am.
You're calling me
during your work day?
Um, I guess I just, I've
been thinking about you.
No David.
No what? I miss you.
You can't do this.
We tried and we tried.
And I was willing to try
again but you were the one
who wouldn't even stay
to have a conversation.
Yeah, you're right.
[Shari] I'm not in
your life anymore.
We signed papers.
And I was the one
who was holding onto
what I thought our life was.
And as soon as I figure
out how to move on,
you call me with this
whole I'm thinking of you.
You're right...
Yeah, I shouldn't have called.
Yeah, you're right
that I'm right.
Look, I know we're not
supposed to be together but,
I don't know, sometimes it's
just hard not to be around you.
Yeah. I have those moments too.
We were good once, right?
A long time ago.
But David, we just didn't
know how to be good
with each other anymore.
[scoffs]
Yeah.
Yeah, and I guess
neither one of us
is any good at
moving on, either.
I guess not.
It's going to take time,
but moving backwards
isn't good for us either.
Bye David.
Kyle!
Hey!
Hey, I'm so glad you made it.
Sasha, this is Coach Josh.
Hi Sasha. It is so
good to meet you.
Good to meet you too.
[Josh] Come here. I want
you to meet someone.
Do like drawing?
Oh, she loves her art class.
Still got to learn how to
clean up, though, right?
Hi! I'm Shari.
Now, do you know the
Artists' Co-op warehouse?
Because we're looking for a
few paintings to put in our
Share Space and I was hoping
you could help me out.
Everyone would see my painting?
- Uh huh.
- Awesome.
Yeah, come on.
Come on. Come on.
So I put you over here.
[Josh] All right. Here we go.
Now.
What do we paint?
Whatever you like!
What's your favorite color?
- Green.
- Green, okay.
Then let's start with green.
And that will inspire you.
Every artist needs a
little inspiration.
[Josh] Here we go with
the big right foot.
Yes!
Goal!
Whoa!
[Kiki] Oh, I'm sorry.
We're closed up for today.
Oh well, that's okay
because Sasha and I had
enough soda as it is.
Kyle took her home.
[Kiki] Okay. What is this?
[Shari] Just a little something
that made me think of you.
Oh wow.
[laughs] I'm so
flattered. It's perfect.
I'm going to put it right here.
It's perfect.
Purrfection. Get it?
You know what, Shari?
I have to tell you...
Well I decided that I am going
to go to Dawn's memorial.
And I booked a plane ticket.
Do you want me to come with you?
I'll be okay.
I know it doesn't
always seem like it but
I do kind of have this whole
adulting thing pretty much down.
I know you do.
But you know us Hearts. We
have each other's backs.
Yes we do.
Shari, I have to be honest.
You should be taking
some time for yourself...
and working on your commission.
Yeah, I know, but
it's not that easy.
You know, being an artist
it's not like other jobs.
You need the right time,
the right inspiration.
You can't just
turn it on and off.
And I get that.
But you used to love messing
around with your paints.
You said it was your onramp.
I just think you're getting
too wrapped up in somebody new.
[Kiki] I'm sorry.
Did I overstep?
No. I hear you.
What's the definition
of insanity again?
Doing the same
thing over and over
and expecting a
different result.
Should we get you a coffee?
I'm going to need pizza.
- You need pizza?
- Yeah.
There's a truck.
There's a truck!
And I'm a chef. And
I could make you one.
[Shari] Except, I
heard it was closed.
[Kiki] Ah! Don't
listen to those rules.
They don't count.
What do you want?
[Shari] Ah, the thing that
takes the longest to make.
[Kiki] The longest... Okay.
[phone ringing]
[phone continues to ring]
[phone stops ringing]
[text notification sound]
[Evan V.O.] Coming
in today? Coffee?
Any thoughts on colors?
[hammering]
[phone notification]
[Shari V.O.] I think you
can handle it from here on.
I've got some things I
need to take care of.
[hammering continues]
[whistle]
[Josh] All right, my
future Olympic champions.
Let's get stretching. We
start with sprints in five.
Very good. Caleb you don't
want to pull a hammy again.
[Josh] We talked about this.
Hey Coach.
Hey Kyle. Just in time
to get stretching!
Sasha, hey, I'm so
glad you came too.
Hey Sasha, you see
that girl over there?
[Josh] She's going to help
you with your homework.
She's really smart and she needs
to get some volunteer hours.
Thanks Coach.
You got it.
All right, everyone
to the starting line!
Let's go! Let's go! Let's go!
[knocking]
- Hey.
- Hey.
Sorry to interrupt.
It's okay. Um, what's up?
Oh, the art's up.
It's actually starting to
look like a real display.
Want to check it out?
I can't. I'm busy.
Sorry.
Is something wrong?
This place is just not giving
me the right work life balance.
Look, if there's something
wrong with the studio,
I can take a look around,
make some changes.
No, it's not that.
Um, I need to take a step back.
From you and your work
and the Share Space.
Okay.
And I have to finally start
focusing on my own work.
Shari, what's going
on? Is everything okay?
No. No it's not.
I am starting from scratch,
so I'm supposed to
feel like I'm free.
But instead I feel like there's
this weight on my shoulders.
I have this huge commission
that I am supposed to finish.
And this canvas is
just staring back a me
and I have no idea
what to put on it.
Maybe I was a fool to
think that I could do this
as more than just a hobby.
Hey, hey, it's okay. I get it
Look, you were there for me
the night after the auction.
Can you please let me
do something for you?
I don't think that there
is anything you can do.
I think I have to figure
this out on my own.
Okay. You know what?
I'm not going to do anything.
I'm going to leave you alone.
This one's on you.
But, there is a place I know
that might make you feel
a little bit better.
Ah, I don't know if
I'm up for this...
Look. There's no pressure here,
no expectation whatsoever.
Okay?
Just a fun night for us to hang
out and just enjoy ourselves.
Shari, how wonderful
of you to come.
Red or white?
I'm sorry?
Wine.
It's paint and sip night.
[Lindsay] Paint and sip night!
Now, go on over there
and set yourself up.
Oh, I'm not an
artist in any way...
No no no. What
did I say? March!
[Lindsay] Tonight
you're painting
something that inspires you.
[Lindsay claps]
Okay everyone, let's begin.
[chuckles]
Have you been this
secret savant all along?
Look, you better
watch it, Picasso.
Hmm. [laughs]
Remember, there is no
right, there is no wrong.
There's just what you create.
[music starts]
Here's to what we create.
- [glasses clink together]
- [Shari] Cheers.
You say that you're
not from the sun
But you shine so bright
You say you're not
from the universe
But there's stars
in your eyes
You say that you're
not from the ocean
But you soak my heart
You say that you're
not from the sky
But you're so divine
[Lindsay claps]
Bravo everyone! Brushes down.
I am beyond impressed with
what I saw this evening
and I think you will be too.
Evan, do you want to start?
Well, okay.
If you thought the
Mona Lisa was dull,
you're going to love this.
Okay, come on.
[Shari laughs]
It's like looking in a mirror!
[Lindsay] Evan,
it's very creative.
And there's a fondness there.
I love it.
Shari, would you like to share?
Sure.
Ta-da!
Wow. That's...
That's amazing.
Now you should be a painter.
[Shari laughs] Very funny.
Shari, you captured
Evan quite uniquely.
[Lindsay] And I really like what
you did with the background.
It's, it's very innovative.
Yeah, it just kind
of came to me.
Very inspired work.
Thank you. I had
a great subject.
You two make a good pair.
So, we should think
about putting these
in our Share Space, huh?
Um, you know, I should
probably get going.
I still have stuff to
do for the Share Space.
Evan, did I say something wrong?
I really did like your painting.
No, it's okay, ah...
- Evan...
- I had a great night.
Evan saw it, and in an instant,
he changed, he just left.
I don't know what I did.
Maybe it wasn't
anything you did.
I guess I did joke about
putting it in our Share Space.
Well, you have been
spending a lot of time
building it together.
Yes, but the Share Space is
his idea, it's his dream.
I just jumped onboard.
And then I told him I
needed to take a step back
and focus on my work.
Was it just about your work?
No. I needed to not jump into
another relationship right away.
Maybe he's confused too.
I mean, you did just say you
needed some space, didn't you?
I did!
But then he showed up and
saw that I was struggling.
And he took me to that
silly paint night,
and look what I did!
You are so into Evan.
[laughs]
Oh, I know, I
know. I like him.
I really like him.
And I know he likes me.
But, I just don't know
what to trust anymore.
What if he changes
his mind like David?
Shari, you can't
control or predict
how other people
are going to feel.
No, but I can
control how I react.
And I shouldn't
react to my divorce
by falling for the
first guy I meet.
Angie always says,
you can't live your life
on shoulds and shouldn'ts.
No, maybe Kiki's right.
Maybe I'm just
following old patterns.
You know, I meet
the charming guy,
I chase his dream,
I sell myself short.
Look what you did last night.
It's stunning.
I mean, all of your work
is incredible, but this...
There's something
different about this.
And that's just in you.
It felt really good.
I was just doing, not
thinking. You know?
You know you don't have
to wait around for a guy
to make you feel better.
You can design your life and
then when you find that person
that fits into it, then
you can let him in.
Not the other way around.
You need to find a way to let
go of some of your old beliefs.
Let go and rebuild.
Sounds a lot easier than it is.
Just start with you, Shari.
And then decide if Evan fits in.
[they both laugh]
How did you get to be so wise?
I don't know, but when are
you going to do my portrait?
You did one of Kiki.
[laughs] Okay, you're
next. I promise.
[music starts]
Lost a love and it broke me
Started to believe the
little stories I told myself
About myself
Like how I'm not good enough
Why I don't deserve
her love or anyone's
Including my own
So I'll go be the
shattered poet
Few will hear but
I'll know I wrote it
I still got some
emotion left in me
Say I don't need anybody
But I'm always with somebody
That don't make much sense
Where is the disconnect?
Need my heart to
be broken open
Maybe I'll love again
Lost myself for a moment
Just to find who I am
I just wanna be happy
I'm just trying to forget
Lost myself for a moment
Still haven't
broken open yet
Lost a love and it closed me
Tried to carry on without
exposing I'm not okay
Hide it away
I knew it.
Sorry, I didn't know
you were still here.
I won't bother you.
You're never a bother to me.
Congratulations on finishing
the Artists' Co-op.
It looks beautiful.
Fantastic job.
Thanks.
I couldn't have
done it without you.
And you're showing
our paintings.
Yeah. Felt like the
right thing to do.
Okay, you're doing that thing
where you're studying my face.
Why did you leave so
quickly the other night?
And why did does it feel like
you're ignoring my texts?
I mean, you're the one
who said you wanted space
from the Share Space, and me.
I know I said that but...
But then when I thought
about your past and you know,
the big D word, you're right,
maybe I didn't give you enough
time when you first got here.
You probably want some space
to figure out your new life.
Yeah, you're kind of
right about that, but...
Look Shari, I like being
around you, but I don't want
to stop you from really
starting your new life.
Evan, you helped me
reconnect to my painting.
I mean, when you told me to just
have fun with it and just throw
some paint against a canvas,
I finally stopped overthinking
and I created something
that I am so proud of.
You're not stopping me.
You inspire me.
Yeah, well, keep that going.
You know, inspiration
is a springboard, right.
So that's all this
is between us?
Just a springboard?
Shari, focus on your work.
I guess we're really
cooling things down, huh?
Yeah, I got a,
I got a call from a developer
out in San Francisco.
She wants to hire me to convert
some warehouses out there.
In San Francisco?
Yeah, it's a great
job opportunity.
It's great.
All of your big plans
are coming together, huh?
Yeah, it seems that way.
Do you really want to go?
Because, I mean, this
is your home, right?
And what about your grandmother?
No, she said that she'll
come visit in a few months.
Who knows, maybe
she'll like it, right.
Winters in San
Fran aren't as bad.
Yeah, I guess not.
I'm... I'm really
happy for you, Evan.
Yeah, thanks.
I'm just giving you
the space you need.
That's a lot of space.
And all the way
across the country.
Well, you can ask me to stay.
Honestly, I feel like
you're pushing me away.
No, I'm not pushing you away.
I'm not trying to do that.
It's just...
I can't ask you to stay.
That's literally the one lesson
that I learned this year.
Well, sounds like you really
found what you need out of work,
but not what you need
in a partnership.
I get it.
I'm sorry, Evan.
I really hope you
find what you need.
Yeah.
Guess I'm going
to San Francisco.
Next year, you could be on
the senior team with me.
That's cool.
Although I'll still be winning.
Ooh, the competition
is heating up.
Ah, Kiki, what are you doing?
It's no one's birthday.
We are celebrating.
What are we celebrating?
Letting go.
A little cake, a
little moving forward.
So, who wants a piece?
Let's let go!
[knocking at door]
[Kiki] Who interrupts a
letting go party, huh?
The more the merrier!
[Josh] It's probably Kyle's
dad here to pick him up.
- Angie.
- Hi.
Thanks again for having
Kyle over for dinner.
Of course. You're
just in time for cake.
No no no. I don't
want to be a burden.
Never!
And I heard you've been
working extra hard this week.
Yeah yeah.
Not my favorite, but we gotta
do what we gotta do, right.
Of course.
I've been trying to find a place
where I can work during the day
and see the kids a
little bit more, but, ah,
it's tough out there.
How about I connect you
with my old supervisor
at the post office.
She is good people.
[Harley] I would love that.
It would be great to catch
some of his track meets.
- Hey Dad.
- Hey.
And great to see him
out there running.
Honestly, I would
really appreciate
that if you could do that.
Yeah. Perfect. I'll text you.
Thanks for dinner.
Of course. Drive safely.
[Jenna] Okay, there's two
slices left and three forks.
What do you say?
Okay, I feel like
the letting go party
hasn't helped you let things go.
Oh, no, it has.
I mean, I've put my
failed marriage behind me.
[Shari chuckles]
And I do feel ready to
start embracing my future.
Maybe give Evan a chance.
Well, that's good!
He got a job offer
in San Francisco.
Hm. That's a long flight away.
Yeah. And he leaves next week.
What? That doesn't make sense.
[Jenna] You guys
were hitting it off.
Yeah.
I don't like it.
Yeah, neither do I.
But there's what he wants
and there's what I want.
And they're on opposite coasts.
Long distance is just so hard.
I mean, look at me and Andrew.
We were so busy in different
cities, on different continents
that we didn't even
realize that all we needed
was just to be in the
same place, together.
Yeah, but, this is so different.
[Shari] We barely
even started anything.
You know, it's nothing serious.
Look, our communication
is way off, so.
I'm going to go and
get some fresh air.
That is not someone
who is ready to let go.
Nope.
[phone rings]
Hey babe, you missed cake!
I saved you some.
Yeah, I'll bring it with me.
I'll see you soon.
What are you doing?
It's all so clear now!
Start without
me. I'll be back.
Evan?
Uh, hi.
Uh, hi. Umm...
What are you doing here?
I got this address from the
references on the
rental agreement.
I need to talk to you.
Ah, no, ah, I need
to talk to you!
[Josh] Let him in!
Look, I was confused when you
told me that you needed space,
because I'm okay with
taking things slowly.
We have all the time
in the world, Shari.
Then I got that call
from the developer.
And I don't think I totally
said what I needed to say.
Okay.
Look Shari, this
job is incredible,
and I want to take it,
but I don't want to leave
without seeing where
this relationship can go.
Maybe we're right for
each other ultimately.
Or maybe we're not.
Maybe it's too soon for you.
And maybe it's not.
Evan, I want you to know that,
I have finally
let go of my past.
So I have no
hesitation about this.
I want you to stay.
I want us to have this
gift of time together.
I want to know if we fit.
But I cannot ask you to give
up your dream job just for me.
Shari, I like being
an entrepreneur.
I get to be my own boss.
Look, this is my dream job.
All I'm missing is you.
Um, okay, well,
if you are willing to
brave my crazy big family,
there might be a piece
of cake in it for you.
- Cake?
- Yeah.
Oh, I'm all in!
Oh, wait!
I almost forgot something.
Wait! Is this my grandmother's?
Oh my gosh! This is,
this is incredible.
Where did you get this?
It's been right in
front of me all along.
And I never made the
connection when I met you.
Evan, this picture,
we cherished it.
It was so important to
this house, and to me.
Nana's not going
to believe this.
I mean, I can
barely believe this!
Thank you.
I guess, all signs
lead to right here.
Right now.
[fun chatter]
Guys...
I want to properly
introduce Evan.
This is the electrician,
the entrepreneur,
my best friend, and my muse.
But most importantly, he's the
man that truly sees my heart.
So, it was worth
letting it all go.
To find my soulmate.
Oh, I just got the
letting go cake.
[Shari and Evan laugh]
Yeah, well, I'm never
letting go of you.
I love you.
Good, because I love you too.
Welcome to my Hearts, Evan!
Thank you.
I always wanted to be a part
of a big family growing up.
Be careful what you wish for!
[everyone laughs]
[Evan] Okay, Grandma,
remember to keep your
eyes closed until I say.
Oh!
[Lindsay] I can't
believe you found one.
Thank you.
[Shari] Oh, you are so welcome.
[Evan] Of course. I
love you, Grandma.
[music starts] Hey
Can't help but
feeling this way
Won't let the
moment go to waste
I take a breath and just say
All right
We make it better every
day the journey starts
Hello?
Good morning! This
is Evan James.
I was wondering if I could
speak to Ms. Adams-Champlain?
Uh, no Champlain
anymore, just Adams.
[Evan] Okay, Ms. Adams...
Actually, you know what?
Just Shari.
Okay, just Shari.
You know, I will call
you whatever you like
so long as the checks clear.
[Shari] Checks?
Sorry, hold on.
Okay... Hello?
[Evan] Still there?
- Jenna!
- Hello!
[Shari] Hey, Jenna,
are you close?
I'm at post A in terminal 3.
On no, that was today? Are
you at the airport now?
Yeah. Today. Now.
Me and all my worldly belongings
I just brought back from Zurich.
Wait. I thought Josh was
coming to pick you up.
That's what he said last
week at Sunday Supper.
And you believed him?
He just texted me.
He told me that you
were coming to get me.
Unbelievable.
Okay, hold on.
Let me get rid of this
person on the next line.
Hello?
Please don't hang up. I'm
calling from the Artists' Co-op.
[Shari] Sorry, I just
have my hands full.
I'm at the airport and every...
[Evan] The Artists'
Co-op Studio.
Your application,
it was approved.
What? Really?
[Evan] Really.
An artist had to leave for
a last minute residency.
So, the studio is
available tomorrow.
Thank you. Thank you thank you!
I will be there!
[Evan] Well then,
congratulations.
Can you drop off
your paperwork today?
I will text you all
the details, okay?
Okay, great! Bye.
Hello? Hello?
Hey, Jenna. I am back.
I'm going to patch Josh in.
Okay, you might get cut off.
I'm going in the elevator.
Go for Josh.
Why did you say that
I'm picking up Shari?
Hey Shari.
Okay, what's going on?
Jenna, that's what we decided.
You would pick up Shari.
- Who decided?
- Me and Shari.
Look, Jenna, Josh. Don't
even worry about it.
I lugged this stuff all
the way from Europe.
I can manage to
get it to Angie's.
Wait! Wait wait wait wait
wait! You're here now?
She's at the airport now, Josh!
She just came back from bringing
home all her worldly belongings.
It's fine, okay.
Trust me, this luggage
is nothing compared to
the relationship baggage
that I just dealt with, so.
[Josh] You should not
be doing this alone.
I am so sorry, I can't
come and pick you up.
Jenna, can you make it work?
I'm in Washington!
Okay. I love you guys. I'm
just going to take a cab.
Okay? Well, maybe two.
Oh! Someone's on the next line.
Hey, Kiki! Josh and Jenna
are on the next line.
Let me put you through, okay.
Shari, okay, so how was
it packing all your stuff
from Europe and was it
awful seeing David again,
or was it kind of like closure?
You know what guys?
I'm just going to call
you from the cab because
I am dying to get to Angie's.
I'm so sorry.
How are you not in
Jenna's car yet?
- Jenna forgot.
- Josh forgot.
Well, I didn't forget.
But the food truck
is still hooked up
and they won't let me park
it in the park and fly.
You guys are impossible!
Well they are. I am
actually possible.
- K, love ya!
- See ya soon.
Byeeee!
Love you too. Bye.
Wow! What?
Guys...
How could we forget
to pick you up?
You're our favorite
globetrotting sister.
Especially when you're moving
back from your ex's house
halfway around the world.
No one should
shoulder that alone.
[Josh] You got a
lot of bags there.
Did you just took the
whole luggage carousel?
[Shari laughs]
Believe it or not,
I actually got rid of a lot
of things before I came.
At least you'll have more than
four pairs of pants to wear.
I am borrowing those shoes!
Oh you guys...
[welcoming words and hugs]
How did you end up with
so much stuff over there?
I thought the diplomatic
corps was meant to
move everything back for you.
Yeah, it was sort of my fault.
I think I thought that by
leaving all this stuff with
David it meant that we were
going to reconcile one day.
You know, I really thought
that when I got over there
things were going to
be different with him
and we were going to patch
up our marriage and...
And now?
And now it is over for sure.
Humiliating.
Well you can stay here
as long as you want.
We will help you unpack and
sort through all your baggage.
And luggage.
[they chuckle]
Thank you, but, um,
I actually already got
approved for a new apartment.
I'm going to be staying in
the Artists' Co-op building.
Fantastic!
Well, before you leave we
will still have time to dig
that new garden bed.
I get my keys tomorrow.
Tomorrow?
I know.
Rory was just starting to
like having you around.
What am I doing now?
Ah, nothing you.
I need one of these.
So, for sure I'm good here?
You are good here.
A little table
setting would be nice.
Pizza will be here in a bit.
Pizza?
Yes!
[Shari] I gotta swing
by the Artists' Co-op
but I'll be back
in time for pizza.
I heard pizza!
[Josh chants]
We're having pizza!
We're having pizza!
We're having pizza!
This is what I needed. This
right here, right here.
This is what I missed.
This is what I needed.
I needed this.
[knocking]
Hello?
Hello?
I guess it's just me.
Here we go.
Home sweet home.
[sizzling and popping]
Ah!
Oh, that is not a great start.
Well, at least I have
one spark in my life.
[Evan] Hello.
Hey!
Hi!
Oh, I have paperwork that
I was supposed to drop off.
They told me to come
by, take a look around.
I hope it's okay?
Yeah.
I'm Shari, by the way.
Evan.
Nice to meet you.
Um, welcome to the
building, Ms. Adams.
Shari. Just Shari.
Sorry about the mood lighting.
It's just a reality of working
in one of these
historic buildings.
They require a lot
of maintenance.
It's worth it, though. Right?
It's beautiful. Who
wouldn't want to live here?
[Evan] Yeah, well,
you'd be surprised.
A lot of people want these
old buildings torn down.
But there's so much
history and life
and inspiration in these walls.
All you really need to
know is your way around
one of these breaker boxes.
And a hammer and a wrench.
And I have you for that?
[breaker snaps]
[Evan] Ah, there you go.
Easy enough. Just
a blown breaker.
You know, when they hire such a
handsome handyman to, you know,
take care of things, it says
a lot about the building
and the owners.
Thank you!
I think so too.
The paperwork.
Can I just leave this with you?
Yeah. I'll have the
keys for you tomorrow.
Okay.
So, same time, same place?
Same time. Same place.
Okay.
Bye.
You have a good one.
Yup.
Nothing like great pizza!
Actually, this is
from a new place.
Rory, what do you think?
I'm not sure. I think I need
about seven more slices.
That's a good call.
That good, huh?
This good!
Okay, great.
Well, I have never met a
pizza that I don't like, so.
How was school this week, Rory?
It was good.
Josh says if I keep growing I
could do high jump next year.
Hmm. High jump?
That's a thing?
Oh, it's a thing.
It's a big thing.
We'll have you come
to a few practices.
I think you'll pick
it up pretty fast.
Yeah, he will for sure.
Kiki, want to share your news?
Yeah, um, well, I'm glad
you liked the pizza guys,
because I just spent
my whole savings on it.
[Jenna] Your whole savings!
What's in it?
Oh, no no no.
I bought a pizza oven
for the food truck.
Wow!
Oh, that's great!
Congratulations.
So, this is your pizza?
Yeah.
- It was amazing.
- It's so good!
Please tell me you
banned any pizza with
just vegetables on it.
Okay. Despite what
you may think,
human beings need some form
of vegetable in their diet.
This is true. We do.
They do go nicely
with meat though.
Exactly my point.
Boom!
Shari, do you want to
share your news next?
Yes.
Um, actually, I just got
approved for my own apartment.
So I'm going to be moving into
the Artists' Co-op building.
- Wow!
- That's awesome.
- That's great.
- Thank you.
And, ah, I know it's been a
rough couple of months for me,
so I want you guys to know I
appreciate your support so much.
Okay.
[Angie] Let's raise our glasses.
New chapter!
Cheers!
I think this calls
for some ice cream!
What do you think?
You think everything
calls for ice cream!
- It does.
- I want strawberry!
Oh, yes! Save some for me.
I'll take Rory's too.
What?
He just told me he doesn't
like ice cream anymore.
It's okay, Rory.
You can have mine.
[laughter]
[soft music begins]
[song "I'll Take Care of You"]
There were times I
couldn't fall asleep
without you sitting near
In those moments I
thought loneliness
was all that I could feel
I couldn't see
it at the time
but you always
pulled me through
You took care of me
I'll take care of you
When you were kids, the others
would busy themselves with TV,
and video games and sports,
and I'd find you
here, all cozied up.
Creature comforts, I guess.
And your artwork is really cool.
You have great taste.
Well, eclectic
taste, but thank you.
Each piece emotionally moves me.
Yeah, exactly.
They all speak to me.
You know, that's what good
art is supposed to do.
At least that's what my
college professor told me.
Wow, art college.
It feels like a lifetime ago.
I just remember feeling
so free to create.
But now...
No, that's still in you.
Sometimes life gets so busy,
we don't get to put
our spirits first.
Yeah, exactly.
Thank you...
For taking me in when
my life fell apart.
Again.
My door is always open.
It's kind of a core
commitment for a foster mom.
But you go above and
beyond, all the time.
You shaped us.
My love for art,
that's because of you.
Because you saw that in me.
You saw the problems coming
in my marriage, didn't you?
Yes.
But I kept that to myself.
Some things have to
be lived through.
Well, you were right.
And now here I am,
right where I started.
You know, Eddie and I
built this house together
and when he died I
couldn't imagine going on.
But then my life opened
up and got bigger.
And filled with more love than
I ever could have dreamed.
[sobbing] See?
You're the perfect example
that nobody needs a partner
to have love, right?
Ah no. No. I didn't mean that.
I believe in loving partnerships
and that we need them.
And you will have them.
We're just each on our own path.
I am definitely on
my own path now.
You certainly are.
But you have all of us
to go along with you.
Even Josh?
Even Josh.
[laughs] Even Josh.
You called?
You have such big ears.
Ah!
My large brain pushed
them out of my head.
[Shari] Oh you really do
know exactly what we mean.
So, how did your track meet go?
Oh, you know.
Not much to tell but
there's this one student.
His name is Kyle.
I mean, this kid could
be a star sprinter,
but for weeks now he's
been distracted, you know,
not living up to his potential.
Some days he's focused and
he runs from his heart,
and others, he barely
shows up at all.
Teens can be such a
mystery, even on a good day.
Yeah, but I'm the coach.
I'm supposed to have
all the answers.
Through my humble experience,
I don't think teens want
to be told the answers.
They just need someone
to show up, consistently.
And be patient.
Be very very patient.
Ah...
Well well well.
[Kiki] Just as I thought.
You are trying to get out of
doing dishes again, aren't you?
Whoa whoa whoa!
That's been his main
move since high school!
- Thank you!
- It's not a move.
I have more important
places I need to be.
Oh yeah.
Or more, like, important
sports playback to watch on TV?
Oh yeah! Exactly!
Okay, we're going to do the
dishes together tonight!
[good natured complaining]
Some things never change.
Teamwork, I suppose.
[Josh] Yeah, we'll
all do it together.
It'll be so fun.
Well, it's all yours.
Thanks.
My family is going to come
and drop my stuff later.
But I was wondering
if you have any idea
when the water in the
bathroom is going to be fixed?
Oh, yeah.
Um, we have a plumber
coming in very shortly.
Everything should be up
and running in 10 hours.
But in the meantime,
there's a cute indie
coffee shop down the road.
Ah, to use the restroom?
For the inconvenience.
First few coffees are on me.
No, I can't make you do that.
Please, I insist.
It's really nice
having you here.
An artists' co-op
wouldn't able to survive
without artists
actually living here.
And I can't survive
without coffee.
So thank you.
I really think I'm
going to like it here.
I hope so.
Do you have a lot
of stuff to move in?
I do.
It's a little all over
the place right now.
Fair enough.
So, what's your specialty?
Well, I'm still trying
to figure that out.
I went to art school and
I love painting portraits
in my sparetime,
but I'm trying to make
a career out of it.
Well, seems pretty promising.
But I will say this.
I am no model and I do
not like to sit still,
so don't get any
ideas. All right?
Fair enough.
Yeah, so, if there's anything
else you need help with,
just let me know.
Okay. Thank you.
Oh, uh, Evan?
I did have one question.
I need to grab
some art supplies,
and I've been out of
the country for so long
that I have no idea
where to start.
I know it's a little out of
the realm of caretaking duties,
but do you have any ideas?
You know, I actually
do know a spot.
Um, I'm heading to that end
of town if you want to join?
Um, yeah.
I won't say no to that.
Meet me in the
parking lot in ten.
Sounds good.
All right.
Thanks again.
Well, it's a start.
Oh!
You ready?
I didn't know there was a
dress code for the art store.
Well, my coveralls were dirty.
Come on. You look great!
This is your car?
Last I checked the ownership.
[they both chuckle]
Thank you.
[Shari] I have never seen
so many fantastic supplies
all in one place.
I'm glad you liked it.
No, it was incredible.
It was such a dream.
Thank you so much.
I owe you one.
Of course.
I have a silly question for you.
How do you choose your colors?
Ah, well, I paint portraits,
so I tend to stick to
the colors of humans.
Fair.
[they both laugh]
[Lindsay] This is
my house blend.
My pride and joy.
Hey, I thought I was
your pride and joy?
Oh Evan, you first,
then my coffee.
Shari, I'd like to introduce
you to my grandmother,
Miss Lindsay James.
Ms. James! Nice to meet you.
Yeah, she actually owns the cafe
and Shari is one of the
new artists at the co-op.
Ohhh.
Well, please call me Lindsay.
I'm an artist too.
Let me see what
you got in there.
Oh, ah, yeah.
The place was incredible.
So much to choose from I
needed a second basket.
Girl it looks like you
replenished your entire supply.
Did you leave anything
for us starving artists?
I'm starting over so I
needed to restock completely.
I have my first commission.
- That's wonderful.
- Uh huh.
Starting over? What
were you doing before?
Evan! Manners.
No, it's, it's okay.
Um, I don't really know
what I was doing before.
My husband is a diplomat
so we traveled a lot.
We stayed in some amazing houses
and they had these beautiful
important portraits.
And I think they inspired me.
So I started painting portraits
of ambassadors and
vendors at marketplaces.
Pretty much anybody
who would sit for me.
So are you stationed
back here in DC now?
Um, not stationed.
I moved back to Maryland
and my husband is
stationed in Singapore.
Well, ex husband.
I haven't really said
that out loud yet.
So now I'm moving into a
one bedroom apartment...
By myself.
Well, the co-op is
a wonderful place.
You chose a good place to grow.
That's the plan.
I'm a little bit of
a work in progress.
Aren't we all?
You know, Nana is actually
a pretty celebrated artist
in her own right.
- Oh, really?
- Uh huh.
I wouldn't say celebrated.
She used to paint
portraits and landscapes.
All sorts of things.
I went wherever inspiration
led me throughout the years.
You understand.
Yeah, well, I would love
to see some of your work.
Well, I would like that too.
But unfortunately I have
no idea where my works are.
I had to sell a
lot of my paintings
for practically pennies when
I was a struggling artist.
And I don't paint anymore.
I just don't have the
heart for it, I'm afraid.
I'm so sorry to hear that.
Let me tell you something.
Never sell yourself
or your art short.
Remember that.
Now, would you let me
see some of your work?
Oh, well, yeah, sure.
[Shari] There you go.
Oh!
She is amazing.
Thank you.
May I?
Oh yeah, of course.
Oh! Beautiful work.
All right, Kyle, let's
improve on that time. Okay?
You feeling good? You ready?
All right, here we go.
Three. Two. One.
[Josh blows whistle]
Go! Go go go go!
What's going on, buddy?
You've been a beat
behind for the last week.
Starts are usually
your strongest point.
I don't know. [sniffs]
What? Nothing's going on?
You know, the team is counting
on you for the upcoming meet.
Especially in the relay.
Yeah, I'm just tired, I guess.
What are you, staying
up too late gaming?
I do that sometimes too.
[scoffs] As if.
All right, look.
State finals could put you
on track for a scholarship.
You want that, right?
Hey, come on, you
can't give up now.
Well it won't change anything.
If I win, it won't
change anything.
Whoa, Kyle, hey!
Kyle.
[phone rings]
[Shari] Hey!
Hey Shari! So, how's
the new studio?
Is it all cosmopolitan
and bougie?
Well, I wouldn't use those
words to describe it,
but yeah, it's pretty great.
Well, when the lights work.
Oh, well, have you met
anyone else in the building?
I did meet this guy.
[Shari] He's kind of
the caretaker, I think.
I mean, he was
really nice at first
and then a little standoffish.
I don't know. It's
all very confusing.
Hmmm. Interesting.
Do tell me more.
Was he cute?
Kiki, really?
What?
Oh! Kiki. Pick a color.
Ah, yellow!
Yellow...
Yes, yes. That's
it. I love it!
Well, you sound excited.
I am. It's this studio!
Okay.
All right. Enough
about me. Tell me.
How's your food truck coming?
Oh, you know me.
I'm just, obsessions
of a caterer.
[Kiki] I've already tried
18 different combinations
of cheese, and don't even get
me started on the pepperoni.
Well, if you need anyone
to test the menu...
Oh yeah.
No, but, um, Shari, the
reason I called is, um,
I need some advice.
Okay.
But if you want
relationship advice,
I'm just telling you right
now, I am not your girl.
[chuckles] No. Um...
It's my first foster mom, Dawn.
She just passed away.
Oh, I am so sorry.
I know that she was a lot older.
That's why you came to Angie's.
Yeah, um, she and Phil
retired to Florida.
He passed away when
I was in college.
But now she's gone too.
It feels kind of weird.
We lost contact after
I moved in with Angie.
I mean, do you think I
should go to her service?
Well, do you feel like you
should go or do you want to go?
Kind of both.
Well, I'll tell you that when I
lost my parents, I was so young.
The funeral was awful.
[Shari] I don't remember
all of the people that came
but I do remember the
people that didn't.
So, I'm sure that
Dawn's family would be
happy to have your support.
[Shari] But you have to
do what's right for you.
Thank you.
It's just, I didn't really
think I could ask Angie.
Oh, I'm sure you could have.
But you know I'm
always here for you.
[Kiki] You know,
you're the best!
I'm sorry, I have to run,
but I'll talk to you soon?
Okay bye.
Bye.
Hi ladies. So sorry.
Jenna is right.
Pillows do help.
Okay.
[loud bangs]
[loud bangs]
I am trying to create here!
[Shari] Hello?
[loud whirring noise]
Oh, hey Shari.
Ah, sorry about the noise.
Did you not get the work notice?
What work notice?
I'm trying to start on
some of my own work.
And all of this noise is
not conducive to creativity.
Yeah, I'm sorry about that.
You know, I tend to keep to the
daytime hours when it's comes
to the loud work.
The artists here like to
work during the nighttime.
So they don't really mind
the noise during the day.
[loud whirring noise]
Well, other artists.
Hey, I...
[loud whirring noise]
[noise stops]
I know that you've
been really nice to me.
Okay, and the rent
is really great here,
but I'm going to need
to speak to the owner
or the head of the
co-op or something
because this isn't
going to work.
Well, you're looking at him.
Wait. What?
Why didn't you tell me
you owned this place?
I don't like being misled.
Okay, well, technically,
I didn't mislead you.
I mean, you don't remember
my voice from the call?
Just Shari.
Um...
Okay, so...
What is all this anyway?
Some kind of project?
Yeah, it's, just working
on a little display area
for the artists here so they
can showcase whatever they want.
That's actually really cool.
Thanks.
Uh, do you want to
give me a hand here?
Ah, yeah, okay.
Just grab this.
Right here?
Thanks.
Yeah.
So, if you really
own this place,
why are you doing
all the dirty work?
To cut the costs for
the artists and myself.
I do most of the
maintenance work
and the carpentry.
Whatever I can learn off of
online videos. [chuckles]
What's the catch?
- Catch?
- Yeah.
Why are you investing so much
of time and money and energy
into something so generous?
I mean, I know how
much the rent is here
so you are not making
much of a profit.
Yeah. That's for sure.
So, why do you do it?
Satisfaction?
Hmm...
Okay, look, I'll admit I have
received some pretty generous
offers to sell this place and
watch them tear it down and
redevelop the land into those
soulless, boxy condominiums.
Please don't tell me
that you are selling
and I have to look
for a new home again.
No no! I am not
selling this place.
I don't want to see
them tear this down.
My grandfather actually
built this place.
Really.
Yeah, he left it
for me in his will.
He was the architect.
Wow.
He wanted to create a
place for artists to be,
you know, creative.
My grandmother, she
started painting here
at the beginning of her career.
And then other artists came
in and they started the co-op.
That's really lovely.
Yeah, it's nothing big,
but one day I'll do a
redevelopment in a big city.
Oh, that sounds like a big plan.
I grew up with my grandparents.
They're the only family I have.
So, it's only right that
I honor their history.
So, what do you hope
to have in here?
You know, paintings, sculptures.
Really whatever anyone wants.
I just want to create a space
for amateurs and professionals.
That's really great.
[Shari] I think you
can think bigger.
What if it could be
like an adaptive space?
[Evan] Hmmm.
You know, I could help you
with a few ideas, if you want.
Well, I'm open to
any inspiration.
Well, we all need that.
Okay, I have so many ideas!
First and foremost, lighting.
We want to create a mood.
So I'm thinking spotlights
on every single canvas!
Wait, is this yours?
Ah, yes, if you like it.
If you don't, we can
just keep moving.
No, I love it. It's amazing.
Thank you.
Okay, come on. I have
to show you something.
And it's a little personal.
But I think you're
going to like it.
Okay, pick a color, any color.
Okay.
Now everything begins
with a blank canvas.
Where should we go?
Anywhere.
Now, imagine if every
visitor to the Share Space
got to contribute to one
piece of art like this.
Yeah, I miss finger painting.
Preschool was the best.
See exactly!
Kids love it,
and adults get to fall in
love with it all over again.
Yeah, I mean,
there's so many ideas
that I'm coming
up with right now.
There's so many things we
could do in that space.
Yeah.
Well, if you like this, I got
to show you one more thing.
It's a little something
that I'm trying out.
Okay.
What do you think?
Um... It's interesting.
Okay...
What do you see?
Uhm...
I will go first.
I see...
Smoldering embers
threatening to catch fire,
and storm clouds churning.
But will it stoke the
fire, or douse it?
Ah, what do you see?
Um...
I see ketchup.
[laughs] What?
Like a sandwich
that's fallen apart.
Or maybe I'm just be hungry.
No, I totally see that too.
Yeah. Like, the
crust is over there.
Yeah yeah right.
[Shari] And then
those are the pickles.
- Exactly.
- Definitely the pickles.
Uh huh.
Okay. Come on.
I know a really
great pizza spot.
[Shari] Okay, so, why don't
you grab a picnic table?
Pizza's on me.
You know you don't
have to do that.
No worry. I get a
sweet discount here.
All right. Well, next
one's on me. Okay?
Deal.
[Evan] Oh, by the
way. I love pepperoni!
Pepperoni. Okay!
- Hey Kiki!
- Hey!
One cheese, one
pepperoni, please.
Yeah, coming right up.
Is that the caretaker
slash owner guy?
Yes.
Wow! He is cute.
Stop it.
I'm going to text Jenna
about this right now.
No don't! There's
nothing to tell.
I was kidding.
But just for the record, I
think you should go for it.
Well thank you.
But you do know the
ink isn't even dry
on my divorce papers, right?
Message received and
just pizza for today huh?
- Thank you.
- Okay.
I know that's hard for you.
Very funny.
Look, thanks for listening to
me about Dawn the other day.
Yeah, of course. That's
what sisters are for.
So, how's the
studio coming along?
Oh, I still have not found
the right number of pillows.
But I will.
Hmm. Well, I'm sure that Jenna
can help you out with that.
I'm sure she can.
Well, enjoy your
pizza date with your
cute caretaker slash owner guy.
- Not a date.
- Uh huh.
Oh, I owe you Kiki!
- Aw!
- Thank you!
What!
I'm cooking up payback for you.
Just you wait till
Sunday Supper!
Hi!
[Shari] Someone
call for a pizza?
Or two? [laughs]
This is yours.
Cheese please!
Wow, this looks amazing.
I know it looks like
a lot but take a bite.
Uh huh. See.
You want another box, don't you?
Uh huh.
[they both laugh]
So, an ex husband.
Uh huh.
Who lives in Singapore?
Yep.
Okay, if you haven't
been able to tell,
I'm trying to get
to know you here.
So if could give me
like a little bit more.
Well, I think the ex
part speaks for itself.
I had an old life and
now I'm starting over.
I'm sure being
married to a diplomat
must have had its perks.
Yeah, it did.
But it was rough too.
You know, I had to
put my life on hold.
And I missed my
foster family so much.
You were in foster care?
Yeah.
My parents died in a car crash.
Oh.
Yeah.
I was a regular kid in a
regular suburban neighborhood,
living my high school
freshman life when boom,
it was all over.
Wow. I'm sorry to hear that.
Yeah, no, it's okay.
My parents just didn't
have any siblings
so there was no one
to take care of me.
But, Angie took me in.
And Jenna was
already living there.
But Josh and Kiki,
they came later.
Well, thank you for
sharing that with me.
Yeah. Thanks for listening.
Of course.
Now, I have a question for you.
Oh oh. Another one.
Yes, another one.
It's not that bad, okay?
Okay.
Um, on Saturday, do you
want to, would you care to,
join me for a little rummaging
at some antique shops.
You could find some new
things for your studio.
Um...
That kind of sounds
like a couples thing
and I just got out
of a really messy...
Oh, no no no no.
No. I promise you this
is anything but that.
Now, if I'm being
quite honest with you
my version of foraging is a
single person activity, so.
[Shari chuckles] Okay.
This is more of a
friendship type of activity.
You can do your own rummaging.
[laughs]
Okay.
- I'm in.
- All right.
Saturday it is.
[they both laugh]
[Shari] It's not a date.
[Evan] It's not a date.
[they both laugh]
So, what brings you back
to our little nook tonight?
The owner of the co-op building
asked me to go antique
shopping with him.
I see.
And you said?
Yes. Because he's a nice
guy and I need furniture.
But now I'm rethinking it.
Is this a date or am I
just overcomplicating it?
Because I can't even
consider dating right now.
My marriage just ended and
how can I be sure that
I won't get hurt again?
You can't.
But I'm not really sure
going to an antique store
constitutes as a date so,
I think you should just go and
not think too much about it.
Okay.
Okay.
What if I'm supposed
to be alone?
When I married David
I was so sure that I was
doing the right thing.
But then I realized all I was
doing was following his dreams,
and he wasn't very
interested in mine.
So how, how can I trust myself?
I have no idea what I'm doing.
A little secret.
No one does.
[Shari] Okay, this
box is donate.
And over there on the
couch, we can do keep.
Keep, yeah.
So, how about this one?
Ah, keep.
Keep. All right.
Oh!
Oh, I love this one!
Oh, now I can totally see you
at all those fancy events.
Yeah.
I don't know where I'll
ever wear that again.
I get it.
Starting all over is hard.
And I'm sorry, sorry that
you'll never go anywhere fancy
with anyone nice, ever again,
even if you live to 110.
I'm kidding!
[laughing and squealing]
You can keep all the ugly
ones. That one right there.
[Shari] Just for you.
For me...
Thank you. Thank you.
Of course.
You'll be okay.
[laughing and squealing]
[bell rings]
[Shari] This place is adorable.
It's pretty cool, right?
Yeah. Are you like some
antique picking pro?
I mean, you really do
this every weekend?
Almost. You know,
I figure my grandmother's
paintings are somewhere, right?
So I just keep my eyes
open and look when I can.
I know the odds are slim, but
it's kind of like
playing the lottery.
My version.
Well, people win the lottery.
[laughs] I mean, I don't
know anyone personally,
but I hear it happens.
Yeah, well, fingers crossed.
I think it's really
beautiful that
you do this for
your grandmother.
Yeah, if I could find
one of her paintings,
it'd be like giving her back
a younger version of herself.
I got to find one.
It's one of those things
that's just so simple
but would make her so happy.
Ah ha! [laughs]
What? You found one?
No, but check this out!
[laughter]
You can find the craziest
things at these antique shops.
Like to think, this was actually
hung in someone's house!
I would like to know
the reasons how and why
that ended up in
someone's place.
I couldn't tell you,
but I'm sure it will be in
someone else's very soon.
Well, I hope it makes them
laugh every time they see it.
[they both laugh]
You know, there's so much I'd
love to do with the Share Space.
When I first started making it,
it was for artists
and their families.
But the more I work on it,
I think I'm making it
for my grandmother.
Aw, that's really sweet.
Yeah, she loves the building.
I just hope it will
inspire her to paint again.
Yeah, I'm sure it will.
That building is so special.
There's just so much
good energy there.
It's so inspiring, you know.
I know my family would love it.
Remind me, it was two sisters
and one brother, right?
Ah! A little bit more than that.
Sometimes I lose count.
Angie's place was
kind of a safe haven
for a lot of kids growing up.
You know, we're
all so different,
but we're family, you know.
I always wanted a big family
when I was growing up.
You're lucky you have
that kind of support.
Yeah, I guess I am lucky.
We have this huge group chat.
[chuckles] You have to
see how it goes sometime.
Oh boy. I can't imagine
what kind of conversations
go on in there.
[Shari] Exactly what
the Share Space needs.
A good bench!
What do you think?
[knocks on bench]
I think we're on to something.
Yeah?
I think we might
have found our bench.
I think so too.
Hey. Kiki's almost ready!
Okay.
You know what, I actually
need some advice.
On your love life?
[scoffs] No! No.
Uhm, no, no, no not that.
It's um, it's my star sprinter.
I don't know how to reach him.
What grade is he in?
He's a sophomore.
I tried to talk to him the
other day, but honestly,
I think I approached
it the wrong way.
And now he's missed
the last two practices.
Well, is he happy
with track and field?
Yeah, I think so.
I mean, Angie,
you got to see this kid.
When he puts his heart into
it, he practically flies.
How are his grades?
What's going on at home?
I mean, he worked hard in
my math class last year,
but I don't really know much of
Kyle's life outside of school.
He does seem more tired
than last year, though.
You know, when you came to stay
with me all those years ago,
you worked very hard to hide the
pain you were feeling at home.
You weren't very good at it.
I wasn't?
If you want to find out
what's happening on the track,
you might need to look into
what's happening off the track.
Makes sense.
You're pretty smart,
you know that?
Yes, I do.
Okay.
You know, I don't think Kyle
needs an athletic coach.
I think he needs
someone to listen.
Yeah, but how am I supposed
to get him talking?
What would my 15
year old Josh need?
[Kiki] Salad is coming up!
[Shari] Yumm!
Never mind the salad.
Who's this guy you've been
spending so much time with?
Me? What?
What are you talking about?
Kiki said you had lunch
with a boy the other day.
A cute boy.
[Kiki] It's called payback.
And I do believe I
mentioned that the other day
when you made off with my pizza.
Uhm, okay, fair enough.
[Shari] This, ah, man...
Cute man.
[Shari] You guys are impossible.
This very good looking man is
the owner of the studio building
that I just moved into.
He also runs the Artists' Co-op
and I am just helping him set up
a small space in the
lobby of the building.
That's it.
Tell us more.
There's nothing more
to tell. We're friends.
They went antiquing
the other day.
Wow!
Oh! Domestic already.
See, domestic. That's
exactly what I told him.
I knew that that was too
much of a couple's thing.
Okay, I needed furniture for my
new apartment, okay, and he goes
to this antique store all
the time, so I went with him.
It was not a date.
Although we did buy a bench.
Hmm. That sounds
like a date to me!
Nooo.
I bet he bought you coffee.
A muffin.
[Jenna and Kiki
together] Date!
Guys, seriously,
I'm not in any mood
to start any kind of
relationship right now.
You should just go for it.
You deserve to be happy.
I am happy. I have you guys.
We know you're happy but she's
ended a long relationship
and you need to go through
that process of letting go.
Finding Shari again.
Yeah. Exactly! Thank you.
So, can we change
the subject now?
Actually, I was just
going to ask if you and...
[Kiki whispers] Evan.
His name is Evan.
Evan, want to go on a double
date with me and Andrew?
Wow! There's that word again!
- [they all laugh]
- [Shari's phone pings]
Oh! Saved by the bell!
Oh wow!
What? What is it?
Evan just found one of his
grandmother's paintings.
Okay and...
Um... It's up for bid
at an auction tonight.
And we have to
get that painting.
I have to change.
But we're just setting
up for Sunday Supper!
No, you guys, you
guys don't understand.
Evan's grandmother gave those
paintings up for like nothing
when she was young, and Evan
has been looking for them
his entire life!
Hence the antiquing.
So, ah, can you, can you just
tell Angie that I am so sorry.
I will catch up
with you guys later.
Mwah, mwah, mwah. Love you. Bye.
You're very excited
about someone
you're not excited about.
Yeah, it is just about
the painting, right?
Not the boy!
[Shari yells] Exactly!
Don't forget about
our double date!
[they laugh]
You know, I've
never actually been
to one of these high
end auction houses.
Have you?
No, not like this.
You know, I keep having
this reoccurring nightmare
that I am going to
accidentally raise my paddle
and bid a thousand dollars
on some ugly candlestick.
Okay, that's a
very specific fear.
I am an artist.
I have a very vivid imagination.
Look! There it is!
Oh wow!
I found it.
The needle in the haystack.
Your grandmother is
going to be so thrilled.
It's beautiful. She really
is an incredible talent.
[Evan] Yeah, this is
the farm she grew up on.
[Auctioneer] Ladies
and Gentleman,
the auction will
begin in five minutes.
Please take your seats and
have your paddles ready.
Okay, take the paddle.
I don't want to be
responsible for it.
[laughs]
All right. Ready.
Up next we have item 39.
A landscape oil on canvas
by one Lindsay James.
[Auctioneer] Bidding will
start at one thousand dollars.
[Auctioneer] I have
one thousand dollars.
Do I have one
thousand five hundred?
[Auctioneer] To the
gentleman at the back.
You're good. You got this.
Two thousand.
[Auctioneer] Two
thousand dollars.
Have I got three?
Three thousand five hundred!
[Auctioneer] Three
thousand five hundred.
Have I got four?
Ten thousand dollars to
the gentleman at the back,
Mr. Berardi.
What are you doing?
Maybe I can defer
on the mortgage
at the co-op for next month.
You can't do that.
You can't risk your
grandfather's building!
Ten thousand dollars going once.
I'll sell my car.
You need your car!
Going twice!
I can't just let this go.
Stop.
Your grandmother wouldn't
want you risking any of that.
[gavel bangs] Sold! The
Lindsay James is sold to
the gentleman at the back
for ten thousand dollars.
Thank you, Mr. Berardi.
On to lot 40.
[Shari] Okay. Okay,
you got to let this go.
Just let it go.
I was right there.
I was so close.
I know, it's not fair.
But I'm sure you'll
find another one. Okay?
[shouts] Will I?
Look, I'm sorry.
No, no, I am sorry.
I think this was
kind of my fault.
I don't think I should
have gotten involved.
Shari, it's not your fault.
I appreciate you for
looking out for me.
Ah, you know there is this
really amazing burger joint
right around the corner.
The least I can do
is buy you dinner.
Hanson's?
Oh, you know it.
I do love their fries.
Well let me let you
in on a little secret.
Those fries fix anything.
- Anything?
- Anything.
[school bell rings]
Hey, have a great night.
Kyle! Hey!
We missed you at
practice yesterday.
Listen, I'm sorry
about last week.
It was hard to see you off
your game and I screwed up.
I didn't know what to say.
It's okay, Coach.
Well, look, I was wondering if
maybe you wanted to kick around
a soccer ball at the
park on Saturday.
I can't.
I have to take care
of my little sister.
You should bring her too!
I'm sure she'd have fun.
Maybe.
Hey, do you take care
of your sister a lot?
Nights and weekends.
Dad has to work
more since Mom died.
I'm sorry.
That sounds like a lot of
responsibility for you.
You shouldn't have to
do all that on your own.
[phone ringing]
Hi David.
What's up.
Well I guess I was just
thinking I felt bad
about not helping
you pack your things.
Bad timing I guess.
Yeah, I guess.
So, what time is
it in Singapore?
10:15 am.
You're calling me
during your work day?
Um, I guess I just, I've
been thinking about you.
No David.
No what? I miss you.
You can't do this.
We tried and we tried.
And I was willing to try
again but you were the one
who wouldn't even stay
to have a conversation.
Yeah, you're right.
[Shari] I'm not in
your life anymore.
We signed papers.
And I was the one
who was holding onto
what I thought our life was.
And as soon as I figure
out how to move on,
you call me with this
whole I'm thinking of you.
You're right...
Yeah, I shouldn't have called.
Yeah, you're right
that I'm right.
Look, I know we're not
supposed to be together but,
I don't know, sometimes it's
just hard not to be around you.
Yeah. I have those moments too.
We were good once, right?
A long time ago.
But David, we just didn't
know how to be good
with each other anymore.
[scoffs]
Yeah.
Yeah, and I guess
neither one of us
is any good at
moving on, either.
I guess not.
It's going to take time,
but moving backwards
isn't good for us either.
Bye David.
Kyle!
Hey!
Hey, I'm so glad you made it.
Sasha, this is Coach Josh.
Hi Sasha. It is so
good to meet you.
Good to meet you too.
[Josh] Come here. I want
you to meet someone.
Do like drawing?
Oh, she loves her art class.
Still got to learn how to
clean up, though, right?
Hi! I'm Shari.
Now, do you know the
Artists' Co-op warehouse?
Because we're looking for a
few paintings to put in our
Share Space and I was hoping
you could help me out.
Everyone would see my painting?
- Uh huh.
- Awesome.
Yeah, come on.
Come on. Come on.
So I put you over here.
[Josh] All right. Here we go.
Now.
What do we paint?
Whatever you like!
What's your favorite color?
- Green.
- Green, okay.
Then let's start with green.
And that will inspire you.
Every artist needs a
little inspiration.
[Josh] Here we go with
the big right foot.
Yes!
Goal!
Whoa!
[Kiki] Oh, I'm sorry.
We're closed up for today.
Oh well, that's okay
because Sasha and I had
enough soda as it is.
Kyle took her home.
[Kiki] Okay. What is this?
[Shari] Just a little something
that made me think of you.
Oh wow.
[laughs] I'm so
flattered. It's perfect.
I'm going to put it right here.
It's perfect.
Purrfection. Get it?
You know what, Shari?
I have to tell you...
Well I decided that I am going
to go to Dawn's memorial.
And I booked a plane ticket.
Do you want me to come with you?
I'll be okay.
I know it doesn't
always seem like it but
I do kind of have this whole
adulting thing pretty much down.
I know you do.
But you know us Hearts. We
have each other's backs.
Yes we do.
Shari, I have to be honest.
You should be taking
some time for yourself...
and working on your commission.
Yeah, I know, but
it's not that easy.
You know, being an artist
it's not like other jobs.
You need the right time,
the right inspiration.
You can't just
turn it on and off.
And I get that.
But you used to love messing
around with your paints.
You said it was your onramp.
I just think you're getting
too wrapped up in somebody new.
[Kiki] I'm sorry.
Did I overstep?
No. I hear you.
What's the definition
of insanity again?
Doing the same
thing over and over
and expecting a
different result.
Should we get you a coffee?
I'm going to need pizza.
- You need pizza?
- Yeah.
There's a truck.
There's a truck!
And I'm a chef. And
I could make you one.
[Shari] Except, I
heard it was closed.
[Kiki] Ah! Don't
listen to those rules.
They don't count.
What do you want?
[Shari] Ah, the thing that
takes the longest to make.
[Kiki] The longest... Okay.
[phone ringing]
[phone continues to ring]
[phone stops ringing]
[text notification sound]
[Evan V.O.] Coming
in today? Coffee?
Any thoughts on colors?
[hammering]
[phone notification]
[Shari V.O.] I think you
can handle it from here on.
I've got some things I
need to take care of.
[hammering continues]
[whistle]
[Josh] All right, my
future Olympic champions.
Let's get stretching. We
start with sprints in five.
Very good. Caleb you don't
want to pull a hammy again.
[Josh] We talked about this.
Hey Coach.
Hey Kyle. Just in time
to get stretching!
Sasha, hey, I'm so
glad you came too.
Hey Sasha, you see
that girl over there?
[Josh] She's going to help
you with your homework.
She's really smart and she needs
to get some volunteer hours.
Thanks Coach.
You got it.
All right, everyone
to the starting line!
Let's go! Let's go! Let's go!
[knocking]
- Hey.
- Hey.
Sorry to interrupt.
It's okay. Um, what's up?
Oh, the art's up.
It's actually starting to
look like a real display.
Want to check it out?
I can't. I'm busy.
Sorry.
Is something wrong?
This place is just not giving
me the right work life balance.
Look, if there's something
wrong with the studio,
I can take a look around,
make some changes.
No, it's not that.
Um, I need to take a step back.
From you and your work
and the Share Space.
Okay.
And I have to finally start
focusing on my own work.
Shari, what's going
on? Is everything okay?
No. No it's not.
I am starting from scratch,
so I'm supposed to
feel like I'm free.
But instead I feel like there's
this weight on my shoulders.
I have this huge commission
that I am supposed to finish.
And this canvas is
just staring back a me
and I have no idea
what to put on it.
Maybe I was a fool to
think that I could do this
as more than just a hobby.
Hey, hey, it's okay. I get it
Look, you were there for me
the night after the auction.
Can you please let me
do something for you?
I don't think that there
is anything you can do.
I think I have to figure
this out on my own.
Okay. You know what?
I'm not going to do anything.
I'm going to leave you alone.
This one's on you.
But, there is a place I know
that might make you feel
a little bit better.
Ah, I don't know if
I'm up for this...
Look. There's no pressure here,
no expectation whatsoever.
Okay?
Just a fun night for us to hang
out and just enjoy ourselves.
Shari, how wonderful
of you to come.
Red or white?
I'm sorry?
Wine.
It's paint and sip night.
[Lindsay] Paint and sip night!
Now, go on over there
and set yourself up.
Oh, I'm not an
artist in any way...
No no no. What
did I say? March!
[Lindsay] Tonight
you're painting
something that inspires you.
[Lindsay claps]
Okay everyone, let's begin.
[chuckles]
Have you been this
secret savant all along?
Look, you better
watch it, Picasso.
Hmm. [laughs]
Remember, there is no
right, there is no wrong.
There's just what you create.
[music starts]
Here's to what we create.
- [glasses clink together]
- [Shari] Cheers.
You say that you're
not from the sun
But you shine so bright
You say you're not
from the universe
But there's stars
in your eyes
You say that you're
not from the ocean
But you soak my heart
You say that you're
not from the sky
But you're so divine
[Lindsay claps]
Bravo everyone! Brushes down.
I am beyond impressed with
what I saw this evening
and I think you will be too.
Evan, do you want to start?
Well, okay.
If you thought the
Mona Lisa was dull,
you're going to love this.
Okay, come on.
[Shari laughs]
It's like looking in a mirror!
[Lindsay] Evan,
it's very creative.
And there's a fondness there.
I love it.
Shari, would you like to share?
Sure.
Ta-da!
Wow. That's...
That's amazing.
Now you should be a painter.
[Shari laughs] Very funny.
Shari, you captured
Evan quite uniquely.
[Lindsay] And I really like what
you did with the background.
It's, it's very innovative.
Yeah, it just kind
of came to me.
Very inspired work.
Thank you. I had
a great subject.
You two make a good pair.
So, we should think
about putting these
in our Share Space, huh?
Um, you know, I should
probably get going.
I still have stuff to
do for the Share Space.
Evan, did I say something wrong?
I really did like your painting.
No, it's okay, ah...
- Evan...
- I had a great night.
Evan saw it, and in an instant,
he changed, he just left.
I don't know what I did.
Maybe it wasn't
anything you did.
I guess I did joke about
putting it in our Share Space.
Well, you have been
spending a lot of time
building it together.
Yes, but the Share Space is
his idea, it's his dream.
I just jumped onboard.
And then I told him I
needed to take a step back
and focus on my work.
Was it just about your work?
No. I needed to not jump into
another relationship right away.
Maybe he's confused too.
I mean, you did just say you
needed some space, didn't you?
I did!
But then he showed up and
saw that I was struggling.
And he took me to that
silly paint night,
and look what I did!
You are so into Evan.
[laughs]
Oh, I know, I
know. I like him.
I really like him.
And I know he likes me.
But, I just don't know
what to trust anymore.
What if he changes
his mind like David?
Shari, you can't
control or predict
how other people
are going to feel.
No, but I can
control how I react.
And I shouldn't
react to my divorce
by falling for the
first guy I meet.
Angie always says,
you can't live your life
on shoulds and shouldn'ts.
No, maybe Kiki's right.
Maybe I'm just
following old patterns.
You know, I meet
the charming guy,
I chase his dream,
I sell myself short.
Look what you did last night.
It's stunning.
I mean, all of your work
is incredible, but this...
There's something
different about this.
And that's just in you.
It felt really good.
I was just doing, not
thinking. You know?
You know you don't have
to wait around for a guy
to make you feel better.
You can design your life and
then when you find that person
that fits into it, then
you can let him in.
Not the other way around.
You need to find a way to let
go of some of your old beliefs.
Let go and rebuild.
Sounds a lot easier than it is.
Just start with you, Shari.
And then decide if Evan fits in.
[they both laugh]
How did you get to be so wise?
I don't know, but when are
you going to do my portrait?
You did one of Kiki.
[laughs] Okay, you're
next. I promise.
[music starts]
Lost a love and it broke me
Started to believe the
little stories I told myself
About myself
Like how I'm not good enough
Why I don't deserve
her love or anyone's
Including my own
So I'll go be the
shattered poet
Few will hear but
I'll know I wrote it
I still got some
emotion left in me
Say I don't need anybody
But I'm always with somebody
That don't make much sense
Where is the disconnect?
Need my heart to
be broken open
Maybe I'll love again
Lost myself for a moment
Just to find who I am
I just wanna be happy
I'm just trying to forget
Lost myself for a moment
Still haven't
broken open yet
Lost a love and it closed me
Tried to carry on without
exposing I'm not okay
Hide it away
I knew it.
Sorry, I didn't know
you were still here.
I won't bother you.
You're never a bother to me.
Congratulations on finishing
the Artists' Co-op.
It looks beautiful.
Fantastic job.
Thanks.
I couldn't have
done it without you.
And you're showing
our paintings.
Yeah. Felt like the
right thing to do.
Okay, you're doing that thing
where you're studying my face.
Why did you leave so
quickly the other night?
And why did does it feel like
you're ignoring my texts?
I mean, you're the one
who said you wanted space
from the Share Space, and me.
I know I said that but...
But then when I thought
about your past and you know,
the big D word, you're right,
maybe I didn't give you enough
time when you first got here.
You probably want some space
to figure out your new life.
Yeah, you're kind of
right about that, but...
Look Shari, I like being
around you, but I don't want
to stop you from really
starting your new life.
Evan, you helped me
reconnect to my painting.
I mean, when you told me to just
have fun with it and just throw
some paint against a canvas,
I finally stopped overthinking
and I created something
that I am so proud of.
You're not stopping me.
You inspire me.
Yeah, well, keep that going.
You know, inspiration
is a springboard, right.
So that's all this
is between us?
Just a springboard?
Shari, focus on your work.
I guess we're really
cooling things down, huh?
Yeah, I got a,
I got a call from a developer
out in San Francisco.
She wants to hire me to convert
some warehouses out there.
In San Francisco?
Yeah, it's a great
job opportunity.
It's great.
All of your big plans
are coming together, huh?
Yeah, it seems that way.
Do you really want to go?
Because, I mean, this
is your home, right?
And what about your grandmother?
No, she said that she'll
come visit in a few months.
Who knows, maybe
she'll like it, right.
Winters in San
Fran aren't as bad.
Yeah, I guess not.
I'm... I'm really
happy for you, Evan.
Yeah, thanks.
I'm just giving you
the space you need.
That's a lot of space.
And all the way
across the country.
Well, you can ask me to stay.
Honestly, I feel like
you're pushing me away.
No, I'm not pushing you away.
I'm not trying to do that.
It's just...
I can't ask you to stay.
That's literally the one lesson
that I learned this year.
Well, sounds like you really
found what you need out of work,
but not what you need
in a partnership.
I get it.
I'm sorry, Evan.
I really hope you
find what you need.
Yeah.
Guess I'm going
to San Francisco.
Next year, you could be on
the senior team with me.
That's cool.
Although I'll still be winning.
Ooh, the competition
is heating up.
Ah, Kiki, what are you doing?
It's no one's birthday.
We are celebrating.
What are we celebrating?
Letting go.
A little cake, a
little moving forward.
So, who wants a piece?
Let's let go!
[knocking at door]
[Kiki] Who interrupts a
letting go party, huh?
The more the merrier!
[Josh] It's probably Kyle's
dad here to pick him up.
- Angie.
- Hi.
Thanks again for having
Kyle over for dinner.
Of course. You're
just in time for cake.
No no no. I don't
want to be a burden.
Never!
And I heard you've been
working extra hard this week.
Yeah yeah.
Not my favorite, but we gotta
do what we gotta do, right.
Of course.
I've been trying to find a place
where I can work during the day
and see the kids a
little bit more, but, ah,
it's tough out there.
How about I connect you
with my old supervisor
at the post office.
She is good people.
[Harley] I would love that.
It would be great to catch
some of his track meets.
- Hey Dad.
- Hey.
And great to see him
out there running.
Honestly, I would
really appreciate
that if you could do that.
Yeah. Perfect. I'll text you.
Thanks for dinner.
Of course. Drive safely.
[Jenna] Okay, there's two
slices left and three forks.
What do you say?
Okay, I feel like
the letting go party
hasn't helped you let things go.
Oh, no, it has.
I mean, I've put my
failed marriage behind me.
[Shari chuckles]
And I do feel ready to
start embracing my future.
Maybe give Evan a chance.
Well, that's good!
He got a job offer
in San Francisco.
Hm. That's a long flight away.
Yeah. And he leaves next week.
What? That doesn't make sense.
[Jenna] You guys
were hitting it off.
Yeah.
I don't like it.
Yeah, neither do I.
But there's what he wants
and there's what I want.
And they're on opposite coasts.
Long distance is just so hard.
I mean, look at me and Andrew.
We were so busy in different
cities, on different continents
that we didn't even
realize that all we needed
was just to be in the
same place, together.
Yeah, but, this is so different.
[Shari] We barely
even started anything.
You know, it's nothing serious.
Look, our communication
is way off, so.
I'm going to go and
get some fresh air.
That is not someone
who is ready to let go.
Nope.
[phone rings]
Hey babe, you missed cake!
I saved you some.
Yeah, I'll bring it with me.
I'll see you soon.
What are you doing?
It's all so clear now!
Start without
me. I'll be back.
Evan?
Uh, hi.
Uh, hi. Umm...
What are you doing here?
I got this address from the
references on the
rental agreement.
I need to talk to you.
Ah, no, ah, I need
to talk to you!
[Josh] Let him in!
Look, I was confused when you
told me that you needed space,
because I'm okay with
taking things slowly.
We have all the time
in the world, Shari.
Then I got that call
from the developer.
And I don't think I totally
said what I needed to say.
Okay.
Look Shari, this
job is incredible,
and I want to take it,
but I don't want to leave
without seeing where
this relationship can go.
Maybe we're right for
each other ultimately.
Or maybe we're not.
Maybe it's too soon for you.
And maybe it's not.
Evan, I want you to know that,
I have finally
let go of my past.
So I have no
hesitation about this.
I want you to stay.
I want us to have this
gift of time together.
I want to know if we fit.
But I cannot ask you to give
up your dream job just for me.
Shari, I like being
an entrepreneur.
I get to be my own boss.
Look, this is my dream job.
All I'm missing is you.
Um, okay, well,
if you are willing to
brave my crazy big family,
there might be a piece
of cake in it for you.
- Cake?
- Yeah.
Oh, I'm all in!
Oh, wait!
I almost forgot something.
Wait! Is this my grandmother's?
Oh my gosh! This is,
this is incredible.
Where did you get this?
It's been right in
front of me all along.
And I never made the
connection when I met you.
Evan, this picture,
we cherished it.
It was so important to
this house, and to me.
Nana's not going
to believe this.
I mean, I can
barely believe this!
Thank you.
I guess, all signs
lead to right here.
Right now.
[fun chatter]
Guys...
I want to properly
introduce Evan.
This is the electrician,
the entrepreneur,
my best friend, and my muse.
But most importantly, he's the
man that truly sees my heart.
So, it was worth
letting it all go.
To find my soulmate.
Oh, I just got the
letting go cake.
[Shari and Evan laugh]
Yeah, well, I'm never
letting go of you.
I love you.
Good, because I love you too.
Welcome to my Hearts, Evan!
Thank you.
I always wanted to be a part
of a big family growing up.
Be careful what you wish for!
[everyone laughs]
[Evan] Okay, Grandma,
remember to keep your
eyes closed until I say.
Oh!
[Lindsay] I can't
believe you found one.
Thank you.
[Shari] Oh, you are so welcome.
[Evan] Of course. I
love you, Grandma.
