It's Our Time (2025) Movie Script

1
(gentle orchestral music)
(gentle orchestral music
continues)
(singer vocalizing)
(gentle orchestral music
continues)
- [Emilia] I remember him.
- [Ali] You're
listening to Sunnyside Up 'n Up
and that was a
song request by Aryan.
- I know Aryan!
- [Ali] Have you ever had one
of those mornings
where everything goes wrong?
You know, socks go
missing in washing machines.
Well today I'm
wearing odd socks.
- Hey, me too Ali!
- [Ali] If you're having one
of those mornings, just call us
and tell us about it.
You know my motorcycle
was running on empty today
and that's the next
song, "Running on Empty."
(busy signal ringing)
(upbeat music)
I'm running on
empty, running on Empty
(Emilia sighing)
Will somebody help me
Somebody help me
Whatever helps me
(phone ringing)
- Hey, Zoe.
- Guess what came
in my mailbox today.
- [Emilia] You're not
looking at an invitation
to our year high
school reunion, are you?
- Yeah, that
dreaded day has come.
- [Emilia] Yes,
and what did we say?
- That we'd be super successful
doing exactly what we loved
and that we'd rock up in a limo?
- Mmm.
Before we drank
those five mojitos.
- Five?
I think it was
closer to 10, babe.
- So, are we going?
- Yeah, let's
just pop in at the end.
Look, we always said
we'd follow our dreams,
so that's what we're doing.
You know life is too
short to question whether
or not we made the
right decision or not.
- And did you?
- What?
- Make the right decision.
With the baking and everything.
- Yeah, of course.
I mean, business is booming.
I can barely
keep up with orders.
I've just got into another cafe.
And they're the best
tasting muffins in Sydney,
thanks to the secret
recipe your mum gave me.
- Yeah well, she always believed
in you more than
she believed in me.
- Oh don't say that,
she believed in you too.
- What do you mean?
She always wanted me
to be a doctor or lawyer.
- Em, if she was here
today she'd be so proud of you.
How did you go with
that film grant last month?
- Oh that?
What do you think?
Same ol' same ol'.
- Well look, maybe the
script is just not there yet.
- What?
- Well okay, maybe that
stupid grant isn't for you then.
- You're always saying that.
- Yeah and I'll going to
keep saying it until you get it.
- What if my mum was right?
What if-
(hand knocking on door)
Oh hey, sorry, I've got
to go, someone's at the door.
(hand knocking on door)
- Suppose you
know what time it is?
- Geez, already?
Look No looks or buts.
Where's my money?
- Here's the thing.
I don't have it on me.
Uh, I mean, I do have it.
Just not today.
(Ken groans)
Can you come back next week?
- Why does it seem
like I've been coming back
"next week" every
month for the past two years?
- I promise I'll
have it next week, okay?
Thank you.
- Hey!
30 days.
- What?
You can't be serious.
- I'm serious, alright
(Emilia sighing)
(soft music)
(keys clacking)
(soft chiming music)
- Tonight?
(keys clacking)
(soft chiming music)
(mouse clicking)
(Emilia sighing)
(singer vocalizing)
(Emilia sighing)
(soft ethereal music)
(coins clanking)
(soft ethereal music)
(Emilia sighing)
(upbeat music)
- [Ali] Good morning you're
listening to Sunnyside Up n' Up.
I'm Ali Lin.
We have a song
request by Ben, It's "Loser."
- My God, is that the time?
(dramatic music)
A loser is what you are
A loser
is what you are, loser
- [Ali] You're listening to
Ali Lin on Sunnyside Up 'n Up.
Our next song is "Use" by Gwyn.
- Hey, hey
you're squishing them.
- I'm sorry, it's just...
(sighing)
- Look, it's
going to be fine, okay.
Look, your film is
probably not there yet.
- What do you mean?
- Well, I mean,
I read the draft you sent me.
It's kind of missing your heart.
- It's an action film!
- Yeah but what's the message?
- There's no message,
it's an action film, okay?
Look, I have to
get this up this year.
I finished film school ages ago.
It's now or never.
- Don't say never, Emilia.
You made that web series.
- Oh everyone makes web series.
- Oh okay, it still
has to have a message though.
It's missing
your heart, your soul.
Like it's missing you.
Look, you've got plenty of time.
There's no rush.
- No, I don't have
plenty of time, okay.
I need to get this up asap.
I need to get funding.
(Zoe muttering)
Why are you counting them all?
- Because Mrs.
Hunstead turns 100 today
and her kids want to make sure
that she gets
exactly 100 muffins.
- Well do you think
she'll notice if I take one?
- I know you so, I made extras.
- Thank you, you're the best.
- Alright so, about your film-
- Ah, I don't have
time to talk about this, okay.
I've got to go to Film Reach
and find out why they
rejected my application.
- Is that what you're wearing?
- What?
Yes, yes.
(Zoe laughing)
I have to go.
- Good luck!
(laughing)
(singer vocalizing)
She said a few days
- Yes, I can't
wait to hear from you.
Thank you so much for calling.
Okay, bye.
Oh God, if I have to hear
one more
Aussie indie horror pitch,
I swear to God,
I'm going to kill someone.
- Hi.
- Do you have an
appointment today?
- No.
- Tracey, I thought I told you
to clear my
schedule this morning?
You must be the new cleaner.
- Oh, no.
I'm not here to clean.
- Tracey, you sent
someone into the wrong room.
Can you come to pick
her up please, thanks.
- No, I mean technically
she didn't send me in here.
But I'm not the cleaner.
You may not remember me.
But you rejected my application.
- Nicole Ho?
- No.
- Aby Okoro?
- No, Emilia Kong, actually.
- It's certainly wasn't the one
with a giant
smiley emjoi with a trophy
on the front was it?"
(laughing)
- (laughs) I thought
that added a personal touch.
- Oh God.
- Oh, and this is just a
thank you for hearing me out.
I just wanted the
opportunity to convince you
that I think you made a mistake
rejecting my application.
- Usually when
people bring in gifts,
it's best to do it a
little more discreetly.
A box of chocolates,
a bouquet of flowers.
Is this your first bribe?
- Ah no.
No, and it's not a bribe.
It's just brunch.
(soft chiming music)
(soft music)
- I do like these muffins.
(chair creaking)
Five minutes.
- Okay, thank you.
Alright so, look, I
just really wanted to tell you-
(phone ringing)
- Yes, Tracey?
- [Tracey] He can't make it.
- Okay, just
reschedule til tomorrow.
Great.
Sorry.
- I just wanted the
opportunity to tell you-
(phone ringing)
- Hold on.
Yes Tracey, what is it?
- [Tracey] He can't make it.
- Okay, maybe we'll do Friday.
Two p.m.,
sound good?
Okay.
- I've wanted to be a filmmaker
ever since I was a kid,
and then my mum passed away and-
(phone ringing)
- Yes?
- [Tracey]
Jenny Mobbs is on line one.
- Oh yes, put her through.
Jenny, hi, how are you?
Congratulations
on getting the funding,
I knew you could do it.
(laughs)
Yeah I know, she's great, right.
I mean, she...
Um, sorry I'm just in the
middle of a meeting right now.
Maybe you can
call back in five minutes
we can discuss where
your funding is going to go.
Okay.
Okay great, bye.
- Was that Jenny Mobbs?
The Jenny Mobbs?
But she got funding last year?
- I, look, I don't
know where the funding goes.
Don't shoot the messenger.
- It's just that
her production company
is worth millions now.
- I don't make the rules.
Now let's look at
your production, shall we?
Cool.
Okay, it was Emily.
- Emilia.
- Emilia.
Emilia Kang.
- Kong.
- Sorry.
Ah here it is, yes.
So "Tit for Tat" right?
- [Emilia] Mm-hmm.
- Okay, the
development executives
take their jobs very seriously.
You're coming
across as not so serious.
- But what, no I am serious.
I stayed up all night
writing that application.
- That's exactly my point,
it takes weeks to write
these types of applications.
Months even.
And then you come in
here, with a muffin bag
and dressed as a cleaner?
Albeit, this is my
favourite type of muffin,
but that's beside the point.
- I'm not
dressed as the cleaner.
I just-
- Tracey said you had a
stain that's been bothering you.
- That's a very
unfortunate coincidence.
- Ah, yes.
Just right here.
Right next to the desk.
- Seriously?
(gentle orchestral music)
Oh great!
Good, great.
- You have big feet!
- I'm like a size six.
I'm a size six,
which is very small.
Look alright, I get it, okay?
I get why
organizations just keep...
I think you've got it!
I get why organizations want
to invest in
filmmakers who already
have a proven track record,
but what about us
emerging filmmakers, like me?
How am I ever going to
get my film off the ground
if you keep
investing in companies
that are
already making millions?
- It's just too big in scale.
It had no message.
- Why are people
obsessed with this message.
Okay, look I'm sorry I don't
have any industry connections,
alright, I wish I did.
- And I wish I could help.
But, hey, you
submitted the application.
I mean that's the first
step in becoming a filmmaker,
you've done it.
Look, how about
this, you make a web series,
maybe re-vamp
the script a little bit
and then next year we'll
reconsider you for some funding.
Okay?
- Hmm.
- Good job.
It was great.
- Thanks.
This has been great.
- Thank you.
I love these muffins.
- You are so welcome.
(soft ethereal music)
- Mmm, a good muffin.
- Oh, my muffin
mascot just canceled.
- Sorry, I'm late.
- Oh that's
alright I've just arrived,
parking around here is terrible.
- I know.
- Oh.
- Thank you,
I'll have these later.
- So, how did your meeting go?
- It could've been better.
- Yeah, okay.
- I was
mistaken for the cleaner.
- (laughs)
I told you not to wear that.
What is that?
- This is my director's outfit.
- Ah huh.
- Anyway, he says he
vaguely remembers my submission
but that it needed a message.
- See?
- It's an
action-drama film, okay!
God I can't stop
thinking about that jackass.
- Don't let that guy
live in your mind rent free!
- Speaking of rent,
I'm in desperate
need of rent money.
- Do you want to
borrow some money?
- What?
No, no you need
that for your business.
(phone chiming)
- This doesn't stop.
- Someone's busy.
- Yeah, I've
been keeping up to date
with my socials, what
with my muffin launch coming up
and everything.
I think I've posted photos
of dozens of muffins this week.
- Hey, isn't that your car?
- Is that a ranger Sam!
Check out my latest posts.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
(soft music)
Looks good.
Wait a minute.
- Oh, I was one
minute over and he was trying
to give me a parking ticket.
One minute, that's ridiculous!
Are you listening to me?
Hey.
- Do you know who that is?
- What?
Oh him, yeah.
Foodie Shan.
He's a big fan.
He likes all my posts.
- That is the funding officer
I met today at Film Reach.
- What?
No way!
- Ah huh.
Hey, maybe you could
send him a little message,
maybe asking him to
review my funding approval?
- Yeah I guess I can do that.
- Really?
- Yeah, I mean what
are friends for, right?
Don't you
remember back in high school,
you'd ask out all
the cute boys for me?
- Mmm.
Yes and they all
turned out to be losers.
(Zoe scoffing)
What?
- Well, I could invite Shannon
to my muffin launch next week
and then you could have a
second go at chatting to him.
- Yes, yes,
that would be perfect.
- But, there is
one small problem.
- [Emilia] What?
- Well, my
muffin mascot just canceled
and I need
someone to wear the suit, so-
- The suit is in
my size, isn't it?
- Yes!
You're going to look so cute.
(wind whooshing)
(upbeat music)
(gasping)
You look amazing!
- I feel ridiculous!
- Look, just
think of this as payback.
Don't you
remember the time you made me
to dress up as a
giant milk carton.
- Yes.
- Oh, he's here.
I'm going to butter him up.
- Ew.
- Just give us a few
minutes and then come on over
and slide in alright.
- Okay.
- Go shake your
muffin top around.
- Okay, well that's very funny.
- Hi.
- Oh my gosh.
Sorry, can I eat these?
- Oh yes please, yes
that's what they're there for.
Um, I'm Zoe.
It's nice to finally
meet you in the flesh.
- Shannon.
And, I just have to say, in
the flesh, I love your muffins.
The blueberry
one is my favorite.
- It's my favorite too.
So are you a baker as well?
- Um, no.
I dabble though, but I mainly
work in film and television.
- Oh wow!
That's really exciting.
- Yeah, not as
exciting as you think.
I work as a funding officer
at this indie film company.
But what you do,
I mean that's exciting.
Like you've built this
whole business, by yourself.
Now you get to
make muffins everyday.
That's incredible.
- You make
people's dreams come true.
I'd love to hear more about-
- Zoe, I just
wanted to say thank you
just so much for
letting me be your mascot today.
As you know
I really need the money
for my film because my
application was rejected.
You!
- You!
Wait, do you
two know each other?
- Yeah, yeah, Emilia and I
are besties from high school.
We go way back.
You know actually, none of this
would have happened without her
and her mum's
secret muffin recipe.
She's the one that encouraged
me to follow my dream.
You know actually you're
in film funding, she needs help,
maybe-
- Zoe no, no.
Okay, I don't want you
to worry about me
about my dream of making films.
- Okay.
Okay.
I get it.
Thank you.
That was a wonderful
performance by the way.
- Thank you.
- (sighs)
I'll think about it.
- Yes!
- But no promises.
- Thank you, thank you so much.
- And it's not because
you convinced me with that,
whatever that was.
It's just that now that I'm sad,
I can just picture that.
- I'll take it.
- Oh um, sorry,
I've just got to take this.
I'll be right back.
(both squealing)
- Zoe, from me and my
muffin top, we thank you.
- Well don't thank
me too soon alright.
We don't know
what's going to happen.
(phone chiming)
Oh, it's Shannon.
- What did he say?
- Oh no, he had to run off.
Oh but look, he's going to
set up a time to have a meeting
with you and have a chat.
- Mmm, he's going
to set up a meeting.
Well, I didn't know
you two, were so chatty.
- Well I mean we're not.
- Yeah.
- This is all for you babe.
This is completely selfless.
- Sure, sure you are.
Okay.
- Alright.
Well go ah,
shake that muffin top baby.
- Like this?
- Just like that.
- Well I'm starting to
make some people uncomfortable.
- Oh yes.
(upbeat music)
(birds chirping)
(Emilia sighing)
(soft ethereal music)
- Take one, action!
- We are gathered here today
(laughs)
to be looking at Emilia?
Are you still in here?
- Let's get out of here.
- [Mom] I need you to help
me with the church bake sale.
(line ringing)
(upbeat music)
- [Jack] Sato Talent Agency.
How may I help you?
- Ah hi.
Hello, my name is Emilia Kong,
and I'm a filmmaker.
I currently have a
feature film in development.
It's called "Tit for
Tat" and I think your client,
Serena Tran, would
be perfect for the lead.
- [Jack] What,
what production company is this?
- Uh, Emilia Kong Pictures.
It's my best script yet-
- [Jack] Is
this project financed?
- Well no, but it's,
I'm very
confident that I can get the-
- [Jack] Well if it's not
financed, we're not interested.
(dial tone humming)
- What?
Hello?
(scoffing)
(upbeat music)
(phone ringing)
Hello?
- Hey, hey ah, it's Shannon.
Hi, Emilia.
Zoe gave me your number.
Is this a good time to talk?
- Yes.
- Lee!
Lee!
What are you doing, man?
Um, sorry.
Yes, um, look, I've
looked over your application
and I think it
needs a lot of work.
- Well, I've actually
already started pre-production
for "Tit for Tat."
- Oh, is that so?
- Yeah, I've been
trying to get some named actors
attached but-
- But they only attach
themselves on financed projects.
- You guessed it.
- I'm really
sorry about what happened
at the office the other day.
- And how you
mistook me for the cleaner.
- That was an honest mistake.
- Well, could you please
make it up
to me by bringing my application
to the development funding
executives at Film Reach?
- Look, I don't know.
- Come on, Shannon.
I really need this.
If not for me, do it for Zoe.
- What's that supposed to mean?
- I sense you
two have a connection.
- You know what?
I think this was a mistake.
You're clearly
coming on too desperate
and I don't appreciate it.
I don't think Zoe would either.
- Okay, you think just
because you follow
Zoe's Instafan account
you know her better than I do?
Zoe and I have been
friends since school and I know
for a fact that she'd really
appreciate you helping me.
- My advice to you
is to take a deep breath,
and re-vamp the project, okay?
- What?
What's that supposed to mean?
- Look, I've got
another call coming in.
Okay, bye.
(upbeat music)
- Want some?
(hand knocking on door)
- [Ken] Knock, knock.
- Who is it?
- [Ken] It's Ken.
- Ken who?
- Can you hurry up
with that rent money?
(upbeat music)
(singer vocalizing)
Sometimes I
feel like a bit too much
Whatever I do
will never be enough
Whoa
- Welcome to our class of
2009 to your 15-year reunion.
(crowd cheering)
Now tonight's
first award goes to...
(Dean slurping)
Dean, dean!
- Sorry, guilty as charged.
- Do you need a
snorkel to drink that, mate?
You haven't changed.
But we love you Dean.
Tonight's first award goes
to the person who's traveled
the furthest to get here.
Any takers?
- Western Sydney.
- Good start.
- Newcastle.
- Newcastle
- Blue Mountains.
- Newcastle.
Going once, twice
and sold Rhonda in red.
(crowd cheering)
(crowd cheering)
Next award is
for the latecomers.
(record scratching)
Those two hotties over there!
(crowd cheering)
- Hi, ah thank you, wow.
What a welcome.
(crowd cheering)
- It's so exciting.
(crowd cheering)
- Thank you.
(camera shutter clicking)
(upbeat music)
Here's to arriving
late and not getting noticed!
- Stop it.
- Wha, ha hi.
Why if it isn't
the terrible two.
- Wow, funny.
Are you still
cutting grass, Jackson?
- You betcha.
I've got my very own business.
Jackson's Mowing.
I also studied at
uni and have a B.A.
with high
distinctions, mind you,
and I'm thinking about
franchising,
franchising.
(clearing throat) Yeah, well-
- A B.A.?
More like a
Bachelor in Assholeology.
- Don't forget
the distinction too.
- I know, once an
asshole, always an asshole.
- Some people don't change.
- Hey, Emilia, ah what's that?
I think you
forgot to cut this off.
- Oh.
- The tag!
- Oh, that's nothing.
I think I just
forgot to cut it off.
- Here, here, check it out.
Pick a card.
Any card.
- No, we're good, thanks.
- Hey Emilia Kong,
hi, you have not changed.
- Thank you.
Oh, Andrew.
- Hey, how are you?
- Good.
Ah, so what are you up to now?
- I'm at the
radio station with Ali,
you know just doing
some behind the scenes stuff.
- Oh my God, I love Ali!
I listen to her like every day.
- Every day.
- What have you been up to?
- Ah well I
make films and Zoe here
has her own muffin business.
- I heard Ali's having Jenny
Mobs on her show next week.
- Jenny Mobs?
- Rhonda Lipkins?
Yeah?
I hate to break it to you, you
do not look happy to be here?
- Yes it's me!
I am happy, it's just the
extra botox I got for tonight.
- Who's Jenny Mobbs?
- Jenny Mobs,
the filmmaker from Newtown.
- She doesn't ring a bell.
But have you heard
this hot shot filmmaker
called Emilia Kong.
(Emilia laughs)
- C'mon.
Everyone knows Jenny Mobs.
She makes
these cool arthouse films
and has won a bunch of awards.
- I think arthouse
films are overrated.
- Emilia, you must know her.
Aren't you into films?
- Yeah, I know her.
I mean not personally.
But um, she gets
funding almost every year,
so I guess they
must be good films.
(all cheering)
- Hi.
- My goodness, congratulations.
I listen to you every morning!
- Do the voice!
Do the voice.
- Yes, yes.
- Hi, I'm Ali Lin and you're
listening
to Sunnyside up 'n up.
- [All] Yay!
- Ali, do you remember me?
It's Jackson.
Here pick a card, any card.
I remember.
I remember Ali's first
day at high school. (laughs)
- Yeah, I remember you.
You said, "Hands off
my basketball you ugly Jap!"
- Oh, I don't remember that.
- Hey everyone,
everyone, have a bag!
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
Oooh, Rhonda's jungle red.
- I'm not
sure if you guys heard,
but sadly Brad and I divorced.
- Oh, sorry to hear that.
- But the
good news is, I was able
to start up
my dream beauty business
from the divorce settlement.
Isn't that great?
- Congratulations.
- I think that would
be a good color for you.
Uh huh.
(laughing)
- Hey, Ali.
Do you think I
could be on your show?
I mean I'd love to
promote my beauty business.
- Yeah sure,
just call me at the studio.
Hey, do you have the time?
- Oh, I'm so sorry.
Sorry.
- You can splash
me anytime, Andrew.
- Oh, um, you've got
a podcast on at two p.m.
- Yeah I do.
My motorcycle
is getting repaired.
- Repaired.
- So you can give me a lift.
- Yes, I'll give her a lift.
- See ya.
Thanks, nice seeing you.
- Bye.
- I'll be back.
- Bye.
(upbeat music)
- (gasping) Oh my God,
that was my favourite song!
(both screaming)
(upbeat music)
Say peace, not cheese
Communication is what
we need
Say peace, not cheese
Communication is all we need
Say peace, not cheese
Communicate is all we need
Say peace, not cheese
Communication is all we need
Communication across
all nations
Communication across
all nations
(phone ringing)
- [Zoe] Hey.
- [Emilia] Are you asleep yet?
- No, just
making a midnight snack.
- How great was
it to see everyone?
- Yeah Ali, and Rhonda,
what a scream!
- She kept going on
about that filmmaker Jenny Mobs.
- (scoffing)
Don't be jealous, babe.
- I'm not jealous.
It's just that
she keeps getting funding
and she's making millions
and I don't think it's fair
that I get nothing.
- Yeah, you're
going to get your chance.
Trust me.
- I hope so
because I have to pay rent.
- I am always right.
But hey you and
Aryan hit it off, huh?
- Yeah, he's already
messaged me and also Jackson.
- Stop it, you are on fire.
- (sighing) Hey, how serious
are you about this Shannon guy?
- What do you mean?
- I saw you
texting him all night.
- Why, I mean I
wasn't texting with him,
I was just-
- Zoe, you know
how I feel about him.
- Yeah, and I know
how he feels about you too.
- What?
What did he say about me?
- Alright, look don't
get mad but he kind of said
you were rude and demanding
on the phone the other day.
- What?
I was not.
I just, I just wanted Film Reach
to approve my application.
- But they rejected it, Em!
It's not his fault,
you just got to work
on your script a bit more.
- I thought you were behind me.
- I am behind you.
It just needs more you.
- I know
you're falling for the guy,
but there's something
not quite right about him.
- Look everyone
deserves a chance.
- You're right.
Everyone does deserves a chance.
And he didn't even
give me a chance with my film.
- Look, I'm really tired
okay, I'm going to go to bed.
We'll talk tomorrow, okay?
(soft music)
(Emilia sighing)
(soft ethereal music)
- [Preacher] Let us pray.
- Emilia, are you listening?
- Yes.
- You're supposed to be praying.
(mom sighing)
(camera beeping)
(camera beeping)
- Why have you got that here?
- Give it back.
- That's all you
do, film this, film that.
I told you, there's
simply no future in filmmaking.
- Because you want me
to be a lawyer or a doctor?
Why can't you just let me be me?
Why care?
- Because I'm your mother!
- I wish you weren't.
- Don't talk to me like that!
There's no future
in filmmaking, Emilia.
- I hate you!
- I heard that.
How dare you!
Right, when we get
back home, you're grounded.
No more filming
Emilia, is that clear?
(Emilia sighing)
(soft ethereal music)
(phone buzzing)
(phone chiming)
- [Jackson] Hey Emilia,
it's Jackson from high school,
the reunion the other night.
Give me a call okay?
(soft upbeat music)
(keys clacking)
Hey Emilia, it's Jackson,
you mustn't be
getting my messages.
Maybe your phone's
broken, I don't know.
Anyway we should hang, okay?
(phone buzzing)
(phone ringing)
(dial tone humming)
(phone clicking)
(line ringing)
- Hey you, I'm
actually doing Cheddar.
- Cheddar?
- Yeah, for my toastie.
- Ah yes, I'm doing cheddar too.
- What?
- (chuckling) Yeah!
- No way!
You're pulling my leg.
- Mm-mm.
I'm not.
I'm putting my cheese and
tomato into the press right now.
- Oh cheese and tomato?
That's a little tame, isn't it?
- Oh yeah, what's in yours?
- Jalapeos!
- Oooh.
Sounds spicy.
- Because I'm a spicy dude.
Of course.
Um hey, what are
you doing on the weekend?
- I don't know.
What are you doing?
- Oh well,
usually I go to the markets,
and take the dog for a walk.
Um, I'm looking after this old
little shih tzu called Rusty.
Yeah, he's so so cute.
Um, but you should come.
The invite's open.
- Does Rusty like muffins?
- Of course
he's a fan of muffins.
- (laughs)
Okay sure, why not.
Um, but actually, I was calling
because I want to talk to you.
I'm a little bit
worried about Emilia.
She seems really down and
I'd really like to help her.
- Oh, why don't you
give her some muffins then?
- No, I'm being serious.
Filmmaking is her life.
Her mum never
wanted her to be a filmmaker
and then when she died-
- Recently?
- No, but it just hit
her really hard, you know.
- I'm sorry.
- Do you think there
is even the slightest chance
that her film can get funding?
(Shannon sighing)
(hand knocking on door)
- Who is it?
- [Ken] It's your favorite Ken.
- Oh hello, Ken.
- How's that rent coming along?
Oh, don't tell me,
the dog ate your wallet.
Oh no that can't be right,
because there's no pets
allowed, you don't have a dog.
Mmm, I've heard
them all, Emilia.
So there.
- Let me explain.
- Ruff ruff ruff.
- God, I need funding.
(upbeat music)
- Come on, I don't have all day.
Can you powder my nose?
I feel like a
sardine in a can of oil.
Careful, you're
rubbing off the contour!
Prop!
Where's my prop?
- [Clapper] Shot one, take one.
- Oh wait, stick?
(Serena grunting)
- [Clapper] 39,
shot one, take two.
(Serena grunting)
- [Director] Cut!
- Fan!
(upbeat music)
- Still nothing's come through.
- Is this helping?
- Walk with me.
It's the paps!
Cover me!
- No, no.
I'm not the paparazzi.
- Then why are
you dressed like that?
It's so last year.
Pink is the new black.
- Hi, my name is
Emilia Kong and I'm a filmmaker.
I've written a script actually
and I'd really love for you
to play the lead.
It's called "Tit for Tat" and
it's about a man and a woman,
they get involved
in a little road rage-
- Is it paid?
- What?
- Ms. Tran
only does paid work.
- Well, it's, um-
(phone chiming)
(phone chiming)
No way.
Ah yes.
Yes!
It is paid.
It's a really good role.
Really meaty, it's the lead.
And you get to show
off your acting chops.
Chop, chop.
(laughing)
Chop, chop!
- Hmm.
- What's does,
what does that mean?
- That means to
send it to her agent.
- Really?
Ah thank you, thank you Ms.
Tran.
Thank you.
- Fan!
- Thanks.
Yes, okay.
(upbeat music)
(phone ringing)
Hello?
- Ah, so you're not
mad at me anymore, huh?
- Why would I be mad at you?
- I don't know, you haven't
been picking up your phone.
- Ah, I've been
avoiding calls all day.
Jackson's been calling.
Hey, guess what
happened to me today?
- What?
- My application
finally got approved.
- No way!
- And guess what?
I got Serena Tran
attached as the lead!
- What?
The Serena Tran?
- Yes.
Eat your heart out, Jenny Mobs.
I got a super star in my film.
(sighs)
I guess you were right.
I guess I didn't need that
no-good funding officer anyway.
- Hey.
Play nice.
- I'm just saying if I were
in his shoes, I would've helped,
but, it doesn't matter anymore.
Because I got funding.
I got funding.
- Yeah, alright, anyway.
I'm going to bed.
Goodnight.
- [Emilia] Goodnight.
(soft music)
(upbeat music)
- Serena, you're just here.
Lachlan I'll get
you to stand here.
Okay.
Serena, now
remember in this scene,
you're trying to pay
Lachlan back for sticking
that note on your windscreen.
Pay him back hard.
- How hard?
- Just hard.
Revenge is best served cold.
- What's served cold?
I only eat food
served at exactly 63 degrees.
- Okay, this is
going to be a long day.
Alright, fighting stances.
- Got it.
- Great.
Action!
(upbeat rock music)
Cut.
Let's go again.
(both grunting)
Amazing.
(both grunting)
Excellent, Serena.
(both grunting)
Yep, great, same.
- Stop that!
- Cut!
Yep.
And just another one.
Cut!
Faster!
(both grunting)
Great.
(both grunting)
Straight into another one.
(both grunting)
Perfect, I'll hang onto that.
(soft music)
(timer dinging)
(phone ringing)
- Hey, how are you doing?
- Completely knackered.
- How were rehearsals?
- It was good.
(sighing)
Serena is very different
to what I was expecting.
- In a good way?
- She's a challenge.
- Well, aren't all actors?
Look, you've just got to
show her
that it's not just
about the individual.
You know, it's about teamwork.
- Yeah, you're right.
Actually you've
just given me an idea.
Alright I've got to go.
Goodnight.
(dial tone humming)
- Okay.
(soft music)
(phone chiming)
(phone chiming)
(phone chiming)
(phone clicking)
(phone ringing)
- [Robert] Emilia Kong?
- Speaking.
- [Robert] My
name is Robert Bankston
and I'm with the
Film Reach office.
- Oh, hi, I just
wanted to say I am so grateful
for the opportunity and-
- No.
I'm sorry, there's been
something of a mistake of sorts.
- What are you talking about?
- Somehow
your application made it
to the top of our shortlist.
But upon further investigation,
it seems you have a connection
to one of our employees.
- Ah, what?
You think I bribed
someone to get to shortlisted?
- [Robert] It appears to be so.
- But I didn't bribe anyone.
- Does the name
Shannon Edmunds ring a bell?
- Shannon?
- Ah, there's the connection.
I have to advise you Ms. Kong
that on this occasion you will
not be receiving any
funding for your application.
- What?
Ah, but I've already
started rehearsals and I'd have
to shut down production
and how am I
suppose to pay everyone?
- You do what you
have to do, Ms. Kong.
Goodbye.
- Wait!
(dramatic music)
(eggbeaters whirring)
- [Ali] Hey, have you
ever had one of those days?
- Yes, today is
one of those days, Ali!
- [Ali] Well,
I'm having one of those days.
And what makes me
feel good is a hug.
So hug the closest
living thing to you.
If you're outside,
hug that nearest tree.
Now doesn't that feel good.
Now this song will
put a smile on your dial,
"Unity, Peace to the World."
You're listening to
Ali Lin on Sunny Side Up 'n Up.
- Guess you heard
about what happened.
- I'm so sorry, Emilia.
I just can't
believe Shannon purposely
shortlisted my application
to get me in trouble.
- What are you talking about?
Shannon didn't try to
purposely hurt you in any way.
- Why are you defending him?
- Because he got a two-month
suspension at work for trying
to help you.
He told you your
script and your application
weren't ready
but you didn't listen.
But he tried to help you anyway.
- Well I had
to shut down production
and I don't
even know how I'm going
to pay the cast and crew.
- Why did
you even start production
when you didn't
have the funding, Em?
Where is my best friend?
Can you bring her back
because I don't
know who you are.
She is kind and
caring and reliable.
And you are just
thinking about yourself.
Do you know why
he finally helped you?
Because I asked him to.
And you know what he got for it?
He got suspended from work
and now he's not
even talking to me.
- Zoe, I didn't know.
- Yeah well, now you do.
(somber music)
(soft music)
- [Mom] What is
she doing with her life?
Daydreaming it all away.
- [Dad] Leave her alone.
It's just a hobby.
- [Mom] First it's just a hobby.
She spends an hour here,
an hour there, then after weeks
of wasting time like
that, what does she have
to show for it?
Meanwhile other
kids are studying hard
to make their mums proud.
Filmmaking is so unstable.
- [Dad] But at
least she'll be happy.
- [Mom] No one can be
happy on an empty stomach.
(upbeat music)
- Hi, I'm Emilia Kong,
I'm a filmmaker.
I've always been
inspired by Jackie Chan movies
ever since I was a kid,
and even though filmmaking
wasn't the career that my
parents wanted me to choose.
It's always
made me really happy.
My biggest regret is
holding a grudge against my mum.
I know now that
she just didn't want me
to struggle like she did.
(camera shutter clicking)
Anyway I hope you can donate
to my crowd funding campaign
so that I can make my movie,
"Tit for Tat" and
dedicate it to her.
Thanks.
(soft music)
- [Ali] Hi, it's Ali Lin
here on Sunnyside Up 'n Up.
Good morning to you.
This morning we're opening
the lines up for, "Let it out!"
Call us now and
let things off your chest
or if you'd like a
song request, call in now.
(soft music)
- Hi.
- Hey.
- I don't really
wanna talk right now, so-
- You don't have to talk, okay?
Just eat.
I'm so sorry.
I really
didn't mean for you to get
in trouble
at work and I would have
never have
asked you do what you did-
- Hey, no, no no.
It's not your fault.
It's not your fault.
You never directly asked me
to shortlist
Emilia's application.
And it was my decision.
Once I heard about
her mother, I felt for her.
- [Zoe] I know.
- [Ali] I've got a
special request from Emilia
for Zoe and Shannon.
Zoe and Shannon,
if you guys are listening,
this one's for you.
I'm sorry, so sorry
Didn't mean to hurt you
Sorry
- I've got an idea.
- This idea
isn't going to give you
another two-month
suspension, is it?
- I don't think so.
- [Zoe] Your favorite.
(upbeat music)
- I've heard them
all, Emilia, so there.
(upbeat music continues)
(phone ringing)
- Hello?
- [Zoe] Are you
listening to the radio?
- What?
- [Zoe] Quick!
Turn it on.
- [Ali] And that was
"Say Please, Not Cheese."
Now I have a
special announcement to make.
I'd like all of
you listeners out there
to check out our
new website because one
of my high
school friends, Emilia Kong,
her heartfelt video
pledge has just gone viral.
(soft music)
(timer dinging)
- You asked Ali to help me?
- Don't thank me.
Thank Shannon.
- Shannon?
- Mm-hmm.
I told you he's not a bad guy.
- I'm sorry.
- Me too.
- I never should have
let my film come between us.
(phone chiming)
What?
(register dinging)
- Oh my God, Rhonda just
donated $10,000 to your film.
And she wrote, "Go make
your film, make your mum proud!"
- What?
- The good news is I was able
to start
my dream beauty business
from the divorce settlement.
Isn't that great?
- Well I guess people
just loved your heartfelt video.
- What a scream!
- I know this new hot shot
filmmaker called Emilia Kong.
(Emilia laughing)
- Oh my God!
Jackson just donated 5,000.
- Here pick a card, any card.
- No, we're good, thanks.
- Maybe he's not
as bad as we thought.
- I guess people can change.
(register dinging)
- Here's to the
power of community!
- Yeah.
We really need to take Ali
out for lunch to say thank you.
- Definitely
we'll do that next week.
We've got plenty of time.
- Hey, that's my spot!
- [Man] What are you doing?
I was here first.
- Let me in!
- I was here first, woman!
- You want to start, huh?
- Hey, get your Love that!
- Stop that!
(both grunting)
- It's coming along.
- Glad you like it.
(birds chirping)
(soft music)
- [Andrew]
It's Sunnyside up Up FM.
I'm Andrew Lin,
Ali Lin's cousin.
- Andrew?
- [Andrew]
I'm very sad to announce
to all our dedicated
listeners this morning,
the sudden
and unexpected passing
of much beloved
Sunnyside radio host Ali Lin,
my best friend and cousin.
At approximately 10 p.m. last
night, Ali was traveling home
on her much-beloved
motorcycle called Oscar,
she was hit by another vehicle.
Following over 12 years
of dedicated radio announcing,
she'll be sadly
missed, not only by myself,
but from everyone here
at Sunnyside Up n Up FM.
I'd now like to play her
favorite song, it's called,
"Feeling Free."
(upbeat music)
- So sorry for your loss.
- I'm so sorry.
- I'm so sorry.
(upbeat music continues)
Feel, feeling free
That's
what our lives should be
Come take my hand
- I can't believe we were
going to take Ali out to lunch.
- I know.
I just just can't
believe how wrong we were.
You know.
I thought we had so much time,
but we just, we don't.
- First my mum and now Ali.
- Alright, thank
you everyone for coming.
So Ali was my first cousin
and she was also my best friend.
We grew up together
and we also worked
very closely together as well.
I'm just so grateful that
she was able to use God's gifts
to make so many people happy.
We were so grateful
to wake up every morning
listening to her voice,
and even though
this was her last ride,
she's going to live
on forever within us.
I just want to
pass it over to Aryan now,
a high school friend of
hers to say a couple of words.
(somber music)
- Hi.
Ali and I
reconnected a few years ago
over an art lesson and we've
been good friends ever since.
I remember this
art lesson vividly.
The teacher
asked us to draw balls.
Eight balls to be exact.
Not small, not big.
Just balls of the same size,
hanging one underneath
the other, one by one.
"These balls will
guide you", he said.
And Ali made this drawing,
she had the best sense of humor.
A Hawaiian shirt
at a funeral, thanks.
She gave me this.
She always loved the
arts, drawing, entertainment.
She was a wonderful
creative with a big heart
and I will miss you.
Thank you.
(somber music continues)
(Emilia sighing)
- Hi, I'm Andrew Lin and
your listening
to Sunnyside Up 'n Up.
The next song is sure
to put a smile on your dial.
Here it is.
The more the
know, the less I care
(hand knocking on door)
I know, I love to overshare
The things you're
saying made me hear the truth
(hand knocking on door)
- Rent this month isn't
due for another two weeks.
Remember, you
gave me extra time.
- I'm not here about that.
I found this on the porch.
(soft music)
(phone ringing)
- Hello?
- I got your package, dad.
- I heard what
happened to your school friend.
I'm so sorry.
I thought that
may cheer you up a bit.
- My first camera.
- You left it
here when you moved out.
- You kept it all this time?
- That's what mum
would have just wanted.
- She never wanted
me to be a filmmaker.
She hated my filmmaking.
- Mum just wanted the best
for you because she struggled.
If she was here with us today
she'd be very proud of you.
- Thanks, dad
- [Dad] I love you, darling.
- I love you, too, dad.
(soft music continues)
- [Mom] Dear Emilia, the
next time you use this camera,
I want you to know that
even though we don't see eye
to eye sometimes,
I want you to be happy.
Filmmaking makes you happy.
Keep following your dreams.
Love, Mum.
(soft music continues)
(soft ethereal music)
- [Emilia] I'm
sorry mum, I love you.
(soft ethereal music)
(soft music)
(upbeat music)
(both grunting)
- Can we cut to
the POV of the fight?
- Okay, I'll see what I can do.
(both grunting)
- Muffin delivery.
- Thank you.
- How's it going?
- Yeah, I think it's, I
think it's looking pretty good.
- I expect
nothing less from you.
(woman grunting)
- That's good,
that's really great.
- Awesome.
(boat horn blowing)
(soft music)
- Here we go,
does anyone need a top up?
- Yep.
- I'm good.
- There you are.
Wonderful.
- Thank you.
- Great.
- Okay.
- Well, congratulations
on finishing your film.
- Thank you.
Well, I mean I did have
a lot of help from everyone.
- Well except
that one guy who tried
to maybe derail your entire film
and also called you a cleaner.
- Mmm-hmm.
Yes, except that one guy.
(laughing)
No, no, I must
admit, you and I did get off
on the wrong
foot, and maybe the way
I went about making my
film wasn't always right.
- I'll say.
- And I'm sorry for
thinking the worst of you.
- That's okay, it happens a lot.
So, yeah.
- Alright so guys,
Emilia has some amazing news.
Her film has been picked
up and is going to be playing
at Joy House Film festival.
- Hey, there we go.
- Congratulations.
- Thank you and I would
like you both to be there.
- Oh, I've got to check my...
Of course.
- So what's the
film called again?
- "Tit for Tat."
- What is it about?
- Let's just say
it's about holding grudges.
Alright let's
make a toast, to Emilia.
And her new film.
- [All] Cheers!
(glasses clinking)
(soft music)
(people laughing)
(crowd cheering)
(soft tense music)
(car horn honking)
- Hey mate, that's my spot.
- What are you doing?
I was here first.
- Let me in!
- I was here first, woman.
- You want to start, hmm?
(tense music)
- Hey.
Hey, stop.
(woman grunting)
(both grunting)
(tense music)
(both grunting)
(both grunting)
(crowd cheering)
(crowd awwing)
(tense music)
(tense music)
- I forgot something.
I'll be back.
- Hey, you're our
lucky 100th customer!
Congratulations.
- Hey, hey, I was here first.
(tense guitar music)
- Oh it's you!
- It's you!
- That's just going to be $5.
I'll take it out
from your gift card?
- Wait!
- What?
- I'm sorry.
I'm sorry about
the other day as well.
Can you put his
items on the card?
- Oh, of course.
Yep.
Merry Christmas.
- Thanks.
- Life's too
short to hold grudges.
Merry Christmas.
- Merry Christmas.
(man sighing)
(upbeat music)
(crowd cheering)
- [Host] And the winner
of this year's
Joy House Film festival
is Emilia Kong for "Tit
for Tat."
(crowd cheering and applauding)
(upbeat music)
- Thank you for this award.
It's dedicated to my mum.
She taught me to start
each day with a clean slate.
And thank you Zoe,
for being the best
friend I could ever ask for.
This is our time to shine.
(crowd cheering)
(upbeat music)
(hand knocking on door)
- So Ms. Kong
is today D day?
- No, today is the day.
- "The day"?
Huh?
- Here is my rent for the
next two months, in advance.
- "Ken, rent!"
- Mm-hmm.
(Ken laughing)
I just want you to know,
I'm not one to hold a grudge.
You have a pleasant evening.
(clicking tongue)
(phone ringing)
- Emilia speaking.
- [Robert] Hi Emilia,
it's Robert from Film reach.
Your friend,
Zoe, explained everything
and invited me to
see your film last night.
- She did?
- I was really,
really impressed.
I'd really like to meet
and discuss your next film.
Are you free next Monday?
- Yes, sounds good.
(upbeat rock music)
Baby
Oh, oh, oh, oh baby
(singer vocalizing)
Oh baby
(singer vocalizing)
(upbeat music)
It's our time
Time for us to shine
You and me
together till the end of time
It's our time
Time for us to shine
You and me together
Till the end of time
You were there with me
You cared for me
You had my back
You had my back
Trying hard to not get lost
In thoughts that made
me drown
You helped and believed
in me
Helped
me turn my life around
It's our time
Time for us to shine
You and me
together till the end of time
It's our time
Time for us to shine
You and me
together till the end of time
You were there for me
You cared for me
You had my back
You had my back
Frenemies above us
Thought they were my friends
Gave them all everything
And thought it would
all last
It's our time
Time for us to shine
You and me together
Till the end of time
It's our time
Time for us to shine
You and me
together till the end of time
I'm here with you
You were there for me
I've got your back
I've got your back
I know
who my friends are now
You and far between
You know what I mean
- [Director] Action!
(Serena grunting)
You and me are a team
- Sorry!
- Let's go again.
- Ali, do you think I could
be on your show, I mean I'd love
to promote my beauty business.
- Sure just give me
a call at the studio.
That's great.
- Sorry I don't have my glass.
- Sorry, he forgot his glass.
- Ah.
- Still rolling.
Okay.
Good.
It's our time
Time for us to shine
You and me
together till the end of time
It's our time
Time for us to shine
You and me together
Till the end of time
It's our time
Time for us to shine
You and me
together till the end of time
It's our time
Time for us to shine
You and me
together till the end of time
