Little Wizards of Oz (2018) Movie Script

1
The production wants to
specify that this film is a fiction
that is to say a work of pure fantasy, and
therefore all the characters and events
are solely the fruit of the imagination
of the screenwriters and the director:
any reference to existing
people or real events
is purely coincidence.
A film by Luigi Cozzi
The Little Wizards of Oz
Shall the reality mix with
fairy tales, sometimes, or
the reality itself is,
occasionally, a fairy tale?
Once upon a time, there was an American
journalist named Frank Baum who
exactly in 1900, published
a young-adult novel
The wonderful wizard of Oz
illustrated with the lovely sketches
by the cartoonist William Denslow
which obtained a huge success
from the public and critics.
That was the first of a series
of 14 books written by Baum
and based on the fabulous
world of Wizard Of Oz.
The first book of the saga was soon
transformed into a theatrical musical
which obtained in turn a big approval.
At that point cinema becomes interested
in The wonderful wizard of Oz
too, and a lot of movies
were based on the book
some of them were realized in the
early days of the silent movies
but the most famous film version was
without a doubt, the
one played in Hollywood
by the actress Judy Garland, in 1939.
The story told by Baum in his
first Oz's book is simple
but at the same time rich
of symbols and meanings.
Dorothy, an orphan girl,
lives in a farm in Kansas
with her loved uncles, until an awful
sudden tornado swallows
up her little house
with the little girl inside, and carries
it in a strange heathland full of magic
hazards and unbelievable beings:
the Oz's fabulous world.
The little girl finds out
early that the only one
who can, maybe, help her
to go back home in Kansas
was the mysterious lord of Oz
the very powerful wizard
living in the amazing city
made by emerald.
So Dorothy begins an adventurous journey
through that land of enchantment
with the aim of reach the city of emerald.
During her long and difficult journey
she becomes friends with
three, unique creatures
which offer to help her:
a scarecrow without a brain
a lion lacking in courage
and a tin man devoid of a heart.
This is an overview of the
story told by the novel
The wonderful wizard of Oz
a fairy tale which is well known, from
many decades, also here in Italy
where children usually read
this book at primary school
because of the relevance and
actuality of its contents.
Kids? One, two and three! Hold it down?
- Engine, rolling.
- Rolling.

My name is Nicole Novelli.
The Wizard of Oz nowadays.
Once upon a time, there was a
little girl named Dorothy
who lived in Tokyo, in Japan.
She used to live with her
grandparents and her dog, Alice.
One day, a very violent
earthquake hit her house.
Fortunately, her grandparents
and her were saved
but the dog wound up in a ravine,
together with the rubble.
While she was looking for
her dog, Dorothy slipped
and ended up to the
ravine's bottom as well.
The rubble squashed the East Witch.
The North Witch congratulated Dorothy
and gave her some shiny red shoes.
Furthermore she created a
protective bubble around her
so that no one could hurt her.
Once upon a time, there
was a girl named Dorotea
she was kind and always
ready to help other people.
She had brown hair and she was tall
she used to wear bright colored clothes
and she lived in Rome.
One day she went into a long sleep
and when she finally woke up, she
found herself in an enchanted place.
She was confused.
An inhabitant told her she was
in the Gnomorelli's land.
In the city of Lyon, in
France, is where Dorothy used to live
a scholar, pretty and nice to everyone.
One day she was walking along
the street of a small town
intent on looking in shop windows
when she noticed a little wooden toys shop.
In New Zealand, there used to live
a little girl named Dorotea.
One day, a tsunami arrived and it
brought her to a very strange city.
She asked a fairy: "How can I
go back to New Zealand?"
The fairy answered:
"You have to go to the King!"
Once upon a time, there was a little girl
named Dorothy and her puppy Toto.
Dorothy locked herself in her room
with Toto, watching television.
Suddenly, a huge bubble
came out of the television
and caught Dorothy and Toto and
brought them up in the sky.
After a many hours flight, they
land in the city of Mareo
who lived under the sea.
The inhabitant of Mareo helped
them find their way to Milan.
One day came an unexpected hurricane.
The uncles went into hiding in the cellar
but Dorothy was trapped
in the house because
of the anti-theft system
that locked the doors.
When the hurricane ended,
Dorothy and her puppy
found themselves in a marvellous land
where all the inhabitants ran up to her
while she was jumping to find
a signal for her iPhone.
Once upon a time, there was a
ten year old little girl
who used to live in Paris with her uncles.
Her name was Dorotea.
One day came a hurricane and
their mansion flew away.
When Dorotea woke up
she found herself in a fantastic world
where trees were made of cream
there was a chocolate river
and men were made of coloured jelly beans.
But there were also four witches
two were nice and two were bad.
Rome: A little girl named Dorothy, who
lives with her parents and her dog Jack
is getting ready for school.
While she is walking to her school,
an earthquake suddenly breaks out.
Into chaos she falls down.
While she is picking herself up again she
finds out she is in a wonderful place.
She meets a fairy.
Once upon a time, there was a
girl named Dorothy
who used to live with her uncles
and a puppy named Toto.
Dorothy lived in a little
mansion on the mountain
equipped with a hot air balloon
in order to survive the earthquakes.
One day, unfortunately,
there was a major earthquake
which made the house sink
together with Dorothy and Toto.
The house sank for millions of miles.
Suddenly it stopped, with a
deafening thud, it landed.
Dorothy, scared, looked out the
window and saw, in front of her
some buildings suspended in mid-air
cars shaped like a sphere
and she realized they were all robots.
Excuse me, where are you going?
At the headmaster office.
Do you have an appointment?
Yes, they summoned me. They are
waiting for me, I am Miss Pantanella.
Once upon a time, there was a child
named Dorotea, who lived in New York
with her uncles, and her robot dog, Toto.
One day, a strong wind came which made
trees float and blew bushes in the air.
Suddenly, a fierce wind gust
caught her and Toto, too.
The little girl and the dog
lingered in that fierce wind
and, magically, they landed
in a land called "Happy Bay".
All of a sudden the girl
heard somebody talking.
She turned over and saw a
Scarecrow who was drinking
a tea sitting at the
table of a coffee shop
together with the Tin-man
and their trusted friend, the Lion.
So you are the new Italian
teacher substitute, Miss Carla?
- Carla Pantanella.
- Pantanella, yes. Have a seat.
- Thank you.

does anybody want to tell me how far
you've arrived with the coursework?
Go.
We read the beginning of the Wizard of Oz
and the teacher told us to summarize
it with our words, in this topic.
Great. Can you bring me the book, please?
Do you know that I read the Wizard
of Oz when I was a child, like you?
It was one of my favourite books.
So, everyone wrote a topic about
the beginning of the book
explaining it in their own words, right?
Yes, more or less.
Okay. Well, now take your topic
and sit here, at my desk.
Excellent.
Let's read to your classmates
what you wrote, so we
can see how you summarized the beginning.
All right?
And you, children, make sure
you pay attention to her
because you're going to read your
topics too, okay? Good. Let's start!
Once upon a time, there was
a girl named Dorothy.
She used to live in a
little house in Dubai.
It was very nice, over there.
Once upon a time, there was Lucy,
a 16 year old girl
who used to live with
a dog named Charlie
her three brothers, her
mother and her father.
They lived in the Los Angeles suburb.
One day, while she was
eating with her parents
a long sandstorm began
and Dorothy fell asleep in her
bed with her puppy, Blu.
She landed in a strange city where
everybody was happy because, touching down
she killed the Wicked Witch Of The East.
Lucy woke up in the gnome's land
where everybody cheers for her because
her house reached the ground
and killed the West Villain, who,
in the past, enslaved the gnomes.
And then she met a strange lady
she was a fairy, the North
Fairy, who said to her:
"Hello and thank you. Who are you?"
"I'm Dorothy and I want to
go back to my city, Dubai."
The fairy answered that the only one who
could help her was the Wizard of Oz.
She gave her red shoes and
a kiss on her forehead.
Then Dorothy began her journey.
In order to get to the Wizard of
Oz, Dorothy had to take a bus.
Just ahead, she met a scarecrow.
He was impaled.
Dorothy detached him and asked:
"Who are you?"
"I'm a scarecrow, where are you going?"
"I'm traveling to the city of Mc Donald.
Over there I will find the Wizard of Oz
who will bring me back to Dubai".
At the second stop, Dorothy met a tin man.
At some point the Tin-man
started to speak.
He was alive, but he had turned rusty.
Dorothy took the Tin-man's oilcan
in order to remove the rust.
He, as well, asked her
where she was going.
And Dorothy answered that she
wanted to go to the Wizard Of Oz.
With the aim of asking him if
he could bring her back home.
Children, my time has ended
did you like my lesson?
Yeses!
Well, well. Before I go I want you to come
here in order to leave me your topics.
Then you can, tidily, return to your seat.
Yes!
And what about you? Are you
going to give me your topic?
Just a minute, teacher,
I'm correcting something.
Hurry up!
I want to take your topics home
with me, so I can read them calmly.
Who knows, maybe I'll get to
know you better, right?
Here we go
- I finished, teacher.
- Very well, Okay.
Goodbye, children, I will
see you again tomorrow.
Don't forget to do your homework.
Who are you?
Hello, I'm Carla Pantanella,
the new Italian teacher.
You are the English teacher, aren't you?
Exactly, teacher Pugliese.
It's a really amazing class and I
was thinking that we can get better
acquainted and talk about children.
You can give me some advice...
Since you're asking, my advice
is to have respect for your colleagues
and to leave the class as soon as the bell
rings. This is what the regulation says.
Children...
Take out your books so we can
start learning about serious things.
Take to page 23, hurry up.
Luca...
Luca. I'm home.
Luca...
Luca. I'm back.
I got a call about an emergency.
Don't wait up. Luca.
So, Veronica Alberini's topic.
Let's see what she wrote.
The Wizard of Oz these days.
Dorotea was a child who used
to live in the United States
with her aunt, her uncle,
and her little dog Toto.
One day, while she was watching
television, she heard that in her country
they were organizing the first
trip to the moon.
Dorotea decided to leave
with her dog Toto
and, while on board a spaceship,
she landed on the moon.
Suddenly the spaceship started
to make strange noises.
Dorotea realized that
the spaceship was broken.
She started to cry desperately
when, unexpectedly, she felt
something on her shoulder.
It was a Martian mouse.
She asked her new friend for
help. He led her and Toto
to a wonderful moon castle
where a fairy with magical powers lived.
The fairy understood.
She opened her magic computer
but suddenly the computer's electrical
contacts stopped working
and the wicked witch, who
hated the people of Earth
cast a spell in order to prevent
the fixing of Dorotea's spaceship.
Fortunately, the Martian Mouse
had a magic ring
which had the power to break spells.
The spaceship was repaired so that
Dorotea could get back to earth
and hug her uncles again.
Hello!
Luca, it's you.
Yes, when are you coming back home?
Ah... it's just because
I was waiting for you.
Yes I'll tell you all about
my first day at school.
But where are you?
Yes.
Yes... yes, yes, I love you too. Bye.
Oh my God... it's so late!
Miss Pantanella, did you
start the coursework?
Well, actually
the students told me that their
teacher started to read a book
The Wizard of Oz, and that they
made some topics about it.
So I started from there.
I decided to develop this
theme and then go on.
For this reason, I developed a
project which could help
them in terms of text
comprehension and writing
but it could also be an
incentive for their creativity.
Look.
Those are the topics made by children.
They rewrote the beginning of The
Wizard of Oz with their own words.
I found them extremely interesting.
In fact, I decided to let
them read their topics aloud
in the classroom, before they
They rewrote the beginning
following their creativity.
This tells us a lot about their
personality and their interests
I believe that it's very
instructive, don't you think?
- Miss Pantanella?
- Carla...
Yes
I appreciate your enthusiasm
but for the rest of the week, I
want you to focus on what
the teacher left on
the course book for you.
Be based on that and don't
listen to the students
they are just children.
If you don't control them, they are
going to take advantage of you.
Anyway I'm going to read the topics and
I'll let you know my opinion, all right?
- Yes, all right.
- You can go now.
- Good morning.
- Thank you.
Miss, come, come here just
for a second, come to see.
I learned a new trick.
A new magic trick?
Eh, yes, they are my secret passion.
Well not so secret, actually. But anyway
I know a lot of them. This one is amazing.
Can I show it to you?
Sure, surprise me.
Take one card.
And now
put it in the deck again.
In the deck...
It's okay.
Drum roll...
No. No.
But why not?
No.
Oh jeez!
Are you sure?
Really?
Yes.
I've never failed at this trick.
I've been practicing for days, you know.
Come on, I'm sure that if you continue to
work on it, you will do much better.
Please, don't beat yourself up.
Goodbye, Mr Gianni.
Goodbye, Miss.
You are the new Italian teacher?
Carla Pantanella.
Yes, yes, I'm Carla.
Eugenio... Eugenio Facchini,
I teach science here.
Pleased to meet you, Madam
or Miss?
Miss, just Miss, for now.
A beautiful lady,
like you, shouldn't be alone.
No, I'm not alone, I have
a boy
a partner.
Forgive my intrusiveness, but
I can't help it, you know.
Perhaps it's because no one
takes me seriously here.
Look, it's the truth!
I think that the headmaster never considers
my proposals during the teacher's meetings.
When my turn comes, she always
takes out her mobile phone
and starts to play during my speeches.
No, I'm sure you are exaggerating!
I'm telling you the truth, it's that
this headmaster only cares about
coursework and rules, not about science.
You don't have to give up, all right.
You know, maybe you're right.
I don't have to give up. Sooner or later
the headmaster will listen to me
Thank you Carla.
Not only did the Lion do park our,
All his four friends did too
but Dorothy was very inexperienced.
So the Lion, the house-scare,
Uncle Ciccio Bello
told her that in four days
they will give her a lesson.
After two days, Dorothy
went to her friends
and asked: "Tomorrow is
the big day, isn't it?"
"Oh I'm sorry" said the Lion
while he was texting with his brother.
I'm sorry, I'm finishing
assigning children's homework.
Are you kidding? Don't worry!
Actually if you have any
problem, I'm right here.
The early days are always
difficult, I've been through it.
Don't tell me, I'm living it.
How are you doing in Rome,
It's chaotic, isn't it?
The thing I fear most is the traffic.
They all seem like they are crazy.
I don't know what I'd do
without the sat nav.
Sometimes I get lost too,
even though I've lived
here for years, so don't get
in your head about it.
I'll try not to think about it.
One of these afternoons, I'll bring you to
try the best chocolate in Rome.
But why not this afternoon,
I go crazy for chocolate!
Hello.
Hello
was it hard to find this place?
No, it takes 20 minutes to get here.
Well, let's go.
It was a hard decision to move
and give up everything, you know.
But, as they say, we do it for love, right.
Yes, you'll see that he
just has to get used to it
and don't you think
that you're the only one
that has to change
something in your life!
Yes, yes, certainly you're right
I don't want to blame him, but
I'd like it if he figures out
how I feel sometimes.
You were right, it's wonderful.
Carla, I want you to meet Romeo, the
owner, "Er mejo der Colosseo".
For chocolate, at least.
Nice to meet you, Romeo. I'm Carla.
She's a new colleague, she's smart!
The owner is very nice.
He's a big one.
He was my boyfriend in high school.
And why did it end, after school?
We figured out that we were just
friends and so we are, even now.
I have some problems maintaining
relationships, I'm OK being alone.
And I don't strive to try.
- Would you like a special Rome tour?
- Yes!
Yes, let's go.
Luca
Luca, I'm home. Sorry, I'm late.
Luca
Luca, I'm home.
Don't wait for me for dinner. Luca.
Carla.
Good morning.
Good morning. You look good.
Yes I do. I'm ready to
deal with the headmaster.
Have you talked to her yet?
I didn't feel ready, But today I do.
This time she has to listen to me.
Science counts as much as math.
I am an honorable professional.
Of course, no one doubts that.
The headmaster does, just
because she's a grammar
school type much more than
a science school one.
- She doesn't understand certain things.
- Come on, let's go.
You really gave me a lot
of courage, last time.
This is the very last time I can do it.
Good morning, headmaster.
I'm going.
Miss Pantanella, how is
your classroom going?
I have to say that I'm excited.
We are perfectly on time with
the coursework, and I'm also
very pleased with the results
of oral tests and class papers.
How far have you gotten
with the coursework?
Those are the last children's topics.
You can take a look, if you want.
They are always about
The Wizard of Oz
the children seem to like
this fairy tale a lot.
But you have to be focused on
the coursework, as I told you.
I'm going to do that
but I need to win the trust of the students
and I'm using the Wizard of Oz to succeed.
It's loved by all the
children. I used to love it too
when I was a child,
thanks to my grandmother.
Your grandmother?
Yes, yes.
She used to tell me about Dorothy's story.
She said that it was a fairytale
full of values, which teaches
how strength only lies in unity.
Yes, it's true, but
children can't talk about
fairytales during their
exams, they have to
demonstrate that they studied.
Can I come with you to the
classroom to see the children?
Sure, sure.
But what's going on here?
What is all this noise?
Gianni... enough of these
sideshows tricks.
You should be their guardian, yet
you are more irresponsible than them.
School is something very serious.
You are a janitor, not a wizard.
I'm sorry, headmaster.
You're absolutely right
your argument makes absolute sense.
I have to quit these stupid things
it's time for me to hang up the stick.
Have a good day.
You can start your lessons.
Good day.
Today I'd like to propose for you to start
reading another chapter
of this wonderful book
in order to write, with
your own words, a topic
about every character's personal journey.
But, this time, you'll have new roles.
You're going to push your
creativity and imagine
yourselves and your classmates
as the story characters.
Each of you, alternately. You're also
going to see this school as the fantastic
world of Oz, which we are going to
discover now through reading.
Do you understand? Do you want to
travel with me in the world of Oz?
- Yeses!
- Well
do you want to start right now?
Yes!
Let me see
here it is!
You! Come here. Sit here, next to me.
What should I do?
Dorothy. You are Dorothy,
the main character of our book.
- Me?
- Yes.
I'm going to read the text, then I'm going
to give you the book
when Dorothy is speaking.
Because you are Dorothy now, you
have to speak like she does.
Do you understand?
Great.
Now we have to find out who your three
companions in these adventures will be.
So...
Which one of you guys
wants to be... the Lion?
Me! Me! Me!
You, come here.
Sit here, next to my desk.
Okay, now, who wants to be...
the Tin-man?
Me! Me! Me!
You, come stand here
next to your classmate.
And, lastly, which one of
you wants to be the Scarecrow?
Me! Me! Me!
You, come here.
Now children, I will start reading. And
you, darling, pay attention
because you're on at my signal. Here
we are, The Wizard of Oz, chapter ten.
All of them were on the road
happy to walk on the grass, soft and fresh.
The landscape was really, really wonderful.
A little later, they
reached a sizable farm.
Dorothy plucked up courage
and knocked on the door.
A strange man with a pipe let them in.
Where are you headed?
We are going to the City of Emeralds
in order to find the great Oz.
Oh, really? And are you sure that
the great Oz is going to see you?
Why not?
It is said that he doesn't allow
anyone to be at his presence.
I've been to the City of Emeralds
several times
It's certainly an amazing
and enchanting city
but I never succeed in
meeting the great Oz
or ever heard about
someone who saw him.
Does he never go out?
No, never. He always sits in the
great throne room, in his palace.
Even his servants don't know his face.
What does he look like?
It's hard to say. Oz is a great wizard,
so he can take on the features he desires.
Someone says he looks like an elephant
someone else says he's like a cat,
someone else thinks he's like a bird
others says that he showed up in the
form of a kind fairy or a naughty sprite.
Well, no one in the world
really knows what Oz looks like.
It's strange, but we have to see him
otherwise our journey
would not make sense.
But what is the point of meeting Oz?
I want a brain.
It would be easy for him, for that matter.
He has more brain than he needs.
I want a heart.
Neither that will make him
uncertain, Oz has a huge
collection of hearts, in
all shapes and sizes.
And I want the courage.
Oz has a vase full of courage
in the throne room
closed by a gold cover, to ensure
that it doesn't spill.
He would be happy to give
you a bit of courage.
I would like for him to take me
me to Kansas, to my home.
But where is this, Kansas?
I don't know, but it is
my home, wherever it is.
So, my friends, nothing could be
easier. Oz can do everything.
Then I'm sure he will find Kansas.
Beforehand, you'll have to get a hearing
with him, and it's not going to be easy
because the great wizard doesn't like to
be seen and he always follows his whims.
Yes?
No, nothing. I just want
to speak with you.
I wanted to say that it was a
wonderful day and that I love my job.
We're going to celebrate this
evening, I'm going to make lasagna.
But we haven't had dinner
together in over a week!
No, the truth is that you don't care
about the sacrifices I've made for you
you don't care about us. No you don't
have feelings, you are heartless.
How bad are these topics if
you're crying like that?
It's the first time
I've heard a joke from you.
Life gives us a lot of surprises.
Yes.
I've never seen you here.
Do you come here often?
No, no. Today is my first time.
It's such a beautiful day.
Anyway, I live nearby and
I'm going home.
Do you want to come with me?
I'll make you a cup of tea.
Yes.
Here you go.
Thank you.
So, how did it end between you two?
Well
after the happiness of the first years
the relationship wilted.
Just like a flower without water.
He became so distant and numb.
So I retreated in the joy
of teaching and working.
Until one day I decided that I would never
again suffer for anyone else, but me.
But your situation is completely
different from mine, like you told me.
I don't know, I really don't know anymore.
The very first day your face was so full
of joy, you were so happy to start.
You scared me.
It reminded me how I was
the first day of school.
Don't make the mistake
of holding on like I did.
Try to see things with more detachment.
Time will give you an answer.
So children, we shall now continue with
the reading of our wonderful book.
Here we are.
You, come here next to the desk.
Stay here close to me.
Starting today, you
will be the new Dorothy.
Dorothy number two.
Yes, Dorothy number two is okay.
Now, we have to find out who your new
companions in adventures are going to be.
Me... me... me...
You, at the bottom,
come here, close to me.
You, come here next to the Scarecrow.
You, come, come next
to your classmates.
And now that we're all
good, we can start reading.
Well...
So let's start.
Chapter eleven.
After a while, they reached the
yellow paved road which will lead
them to the City of Emeralds where
the great Wizard of Oz lives.
The following morning, after breakfast,
a guard with a green beard
went to Dorothy in order to bring
her to the great and powerful Oz.
Are you the one who asked
to see Oz, the terrible?
Sure, if he wants to see me.
So come with me.
So the two of them got going towards
the Wizard of Oz throne room together.
I am Oz, the great and
terrible Wizard of Oz.
Who are you? And why do you
address to my majesty?
I'm Dorothy, the little and weak
Dorothy and I'm here to beg for your help.
Where did you get those red
shoes that you are wearing?
I took them from the
East Wicked Witch, when
my house killed her, falling down on her.
And what do you want from me?
I want you to take me back to Kansas,
to my Aunt Emma and Uncle Enrico.
Ha ha ha! Why should I do that for you?
Because I am a poor child and
you are mighty and a wizard.
But you were strong enough to
kill the East Wicked Witch.
But it was just a coincidence,
I do not have any credit.
Well, listen. You have no right
to demand that I take you
back to Kansas, unless you do
something for me in return.
In my country, you have to
pay for everything you get.
I know you want me to use my magic
powers to bring you back home
but first, you have to do something for me.
Help me and I'll help you.
What do I have to do?
Kill the West Wicked Witch.
But I don't know how!
You've killed the East Wicked
Witch and you wear her red shoes
which have magic powers.
Now there is just one wicked witch left.
When you tell me that she's dead,
I will take you back home, but not before.
With a twinge in her chest,
Dorothy left the throne room
and went back to the Lion, the
Scarecrow and the Tin-man
who were anxious to know what
the great Oz said to her.
There's no hope for me because Oz
said he will only take me back home
if I kill the West Wicked Witch,
but I could never do that.
Her companions were very sad for her, but
they could not do anything to help.
Dorothy left them and went to her room,
where she cried until she fell asleep.
The morning after, the guard with
the green beard went to the
Scarecrow and said to him:
"The great Oz is waiting for you."
The Scarecrow was admitted to the great
throne room where he saw a beautiful lady.
I'm Oz, the great and terrible Oz.
Who are you, and why are
you coming to my majesty?
I'm a simple scarecrow stuffed with straw,
for that reason, I do not have a brain.
I came here in order to beg you
to put some brain in my head
instead of straw, so that I can be
like every other man in your kingdom.
Why do I have to do that for you?
Because you are wise and powerful,
and no one except you can help me.
I never give something without
taking something in return.
But I can promise you
that if you'll kill the
West Wicked Witch, I will
provide you with a large
amount of brain, a brain
so quick that you'll
become the wisest
man in the Oz kingdom.
Oh boy, it seems that you asked Dorothy
to kill the West Wicked Witch too!
I don't care who Kills her.
As long as the witch is alive,
I will not grant your wishes.
Now go away and don't appear before
me again.
You will not gain the brain
you care so much about.
The Scarecrow returned forlorn to his
friends and told them what Oz asked of him.
Dorothy was very surprised
to hear that the great wizard
wasn't a big head, as she had seen,
but a beautiful lady.
The morning after, one of the
guards with the green beard
came to the Tin-man and brought
him to the big throne room.
Oz didn't appear like a head or
a beautiful lady, but rather
with the appearance of a
horrible and ferocious monster.
I'm Oz, the great and terrible Oz. Who are
you? Why are you coming to my majesty?
I am a lumberjack, entirely made of tin,
so I don't have a heart and I cannot love.
I'm begging your majesty to
give me the gift of a heart
so that I will be like every other man.
If you really want a heart,
you have to earn it.
How?
You're going to help Dorothy
kill the West Wicked Witch.
When she is dead, you may
come to me and I'll give you
the biggest, kindest, and sweetest
heart of all the kingdom.
The great Oz is waiting for you.
I'm Oz, the great and terrible Oz.
Who are you?
Why are you coming to my majesty?
I am the cowardly
Lion, afraid of everything.
I'm here to beg you to give me
the courage so that I can really be the
king of the animals, as men call me.
And why do I have
to give you the courage?
Because you're the
greatest among all the
wizards and only you
can fulfill my request.
Give me proof of the West Wicked Witch's
death, and I will give you courage.
As long as the witch lives, you
will be doomed to live as a coward.
So, what are we going to do now?
We can just find the
West Wicked Witch and kill her.
What if we fail?
In such a case, I'll never be brave.
And I will never be smart.
And I will never have a heart.
And I will never see Aunt Emma
and Uncle Enrico again.
I think we have to try
even if I don't want to kill anyone,
not even to see Aunt Emma again.
And I'm going to come with you, even if I
don't have the courage
to kill a living soul.
I'll come with you too, but I won't be
able to help you because I'm so stupid.
And I don't have the heart
to kill the witch either
but if you go, I'll go with you.
Do you smell something strange?
Yes, it smells like smoke.
Where is it coming from?
There's something burning.
I hate fire.
Oh god, the cake in the oven!
The doorbell.
Welcome.
Please come in, good evening.
Please, come with me. Have a seat.
- Is there something burning?
- Yes.
I put a cake in the oven, but I started to
read children's topics and forgot about it.
- Luckily, we took care of that.
- Keep it.
Thank you.
Nice home, do you live alone?
No, with my boyfriend
but he's at work right now.
That's a shame, I would like to meet him.
Yes, maybe another time.
Let's open the desserts!
May I ask you something?
Sure.
This is my first assignment as substitute
and for such a long time, I thought
that the teaching staff could be more
unified, that it could be like a family.
It may be, but unfortunately some people
bring their frustration at school.
Like the general, for instance...
Who is the general?
The headmaster.
I call her this because she thinks
she's the superior of a sort of army.
For her, education is a war.
And what do you think about
the assistant principal?
Pugliese? That woman is full of evil.
No I don't think so.
She must have skeletons
in the closet, it's like
she's protecting herself in a shell.
Every day.
Good morning teacher.
Good morning children. How are you doing?
Well, thank you.
Have you done your homework?
- Yes...
- no!
Who said no?
I didn't make a thing.
Okay, we're going to finish it later.
So, here we are.
Now, who are we going
to choose to continue
our wonderful book?
Who wants to be Dorothy?
Let's see who will be our Dorothy...
There she is, our Dorothy,
a chocolate lover?
Come here.
Well...
So you are Dorothy the third
the Dorothy of this chapter, the twelfth,
looking for the West Wicked Witch.
I start.
Get ready. And you, children,
pay attention because
you'll have to do a topic
on this chapter later.
Come on, let's start.
Shortly after Emerald City
was behind their back
and moved along,
the new western path
gradually became more
irregular and mountainous.
In that strange West
country, there weren't
houses or farms, and the
land was not cultivated.
It was a dark realm, where the bleak
manor of the West Wicked Witch stood.
Do you feel safe, little Dorothy?
Safe with your friends, the
Lion, the Tin-man and
the Scarecrow. But you don't
know that I can see you!
And you don't know that,
with my magic powers
I can bring you here.
Here you are, little brat.
Now you are completely in my power.
Away from your three friends.
Who are you?
Me?
Yes... I am the West Wicked Witch.
Oh, yes... yes.
Since I can't kill you because you
are protected by the forces of good
always powerful over the bad ones,
you will be my little slave from now on.
Here you have a broom to wipe,
water, and a rag to clean up the floor.
Hurry up and make this space shine,
if you want something to eat.
You are old and mean and you don't
have the right to treat me like this.
Yes, yes, I'm very bad, but I want to
treat you worse than that
but first, I have to fix up
your three stupid friends.
No!
No!
No! No! Not the water, no! Stand still!
No, it's the only thing I'm afraid of!
No! No!
Look what you've done.
I'm melting!
I'm sorry.
Did you know that only
water can kill me?
Stupid!
Well, I'm going to be completely
melted in a moment
and you are going to be
the owner of this castle!
I used to be so bad in my life
but I never thought that a
little child like you
could kill me and put an end
to my bad actions.
It's over!
Now it's my turn to clean up!
Whoa. You are a bomb, not a teacher!
Thanks. Looks who's talking,
Brigitte Bar dot of Quadraro block!
Listen, before we get her, tell me about
the beastly encounter at the park.
With Pugliese?
I was sitting in the park,
grading children's homework.
I had just argued with Luca and she
came up to me in a jogging suit.
Wait, Pugliese in a jogging suit?
Oh, wow!
- We were right.
- Meaning?
She's not evil, she's just lonely.
- Let's go get her.
- Yes.
You are so beautiful!
Are you out hunting men?
Yes, we're going to conquer them all.
Go!
It's a problem that most parents have.
They are too permissive,
you can't leave a child
surfing the web alone, it's unacceptable.
50 year old values no longer exist.
Children used to help their
parents at home once.
There was respect for the family.
But now... now they just demand.
You're right. Buy me this,
buy me that, Take me there.
It seems like everything is owed to them.
That's the reason we have to help
parents, that's where they struggle most.
I've always seen teachers
as superheroes.
If we use our superpowers to infuse
the righteous teaching
and righteous values, we'll have a future
society better than the present one.
We can build better people
than the ones we have now.
Do you understand what I'm saying?
I've never thought of it like that!
Neither do I.
But I think you are right.
Well I propose a toast to this lunch
and to this great team of teachers!
To the super-heroines!
This is to us!
Eugenio.
- Good morning.
- Good morning.
Good morning.
So it's the day of the great conclusion!
It is.
I want to ask you something, a
personal favour, if possible.
What?
Come see us during the last
minutes of the lesson.
Can you?
Yes, I'll come. I'm curious
to watch you work.
I'll be waiting for you, then.
Now it's time to finish
reading our Wizard of Oz.
We have to read the last chapters, but
we need a new Dorothy, Dorothy 4.
Who wants to be her?
Here we have our new Dorothy
sit next to me.
OK, so let's start!
After the West Wicked Witch melted
little Dorothy joined the Tin-man,
the Scarecrow and the Lion.
All together, they came back to
Emerald City and were immediately
brought into the throne room
to meet the powerful Oz.
I'm Oz, the great and terrible Oz.
We are here so that you can
honor your promise.
Which promise?
You promised to take me back to Kansas
after the West Wicked Witch's death.
And you promised me a brain.
And you promised to give me a heart.
And you promised me the courage.
Are you sure the
West Wicked Witch is dead?
Yes, I melted her with a bucket of water.
Oh, how fast you have been! Well,
come back tomorrow, I have to think now.
We are not going to wait another day.
You've had enough time.
You have to remain loyal to
the promises you've made.
At this point, the disappointed
and dejected
Lion left the others in order to
have a look behind the throne.
Hidden by a cloth, he found
a strange little man who was
operating some unusual tools.
Thanks to these tools, he could make all
the different Oz faces appear in the arr.
They were just an illusion. And so...
Look what I've found!
And who are you?
I? I am the real Wizard of Oz.
But you are Gianni the janitor.
So, are you the Wizard of Oz?
Yes I'm the great and
terrible Wizard of Oz.
But I'm also Gianni the janitor.
Please, don't reveal my secret. I'm
begging you, I'll do anything you want.
I thought Oz was a huge
head without a body.
And I thought Oz was a beautiful lady.
And I thought for sure Oz was a fireball.
You are a swindler, a barker.
Yes, you were wrong. I cheated you
with a special machine that I've built.
What you saw were just
projections that I produced, illusions.
You mean, you are not a wizard?
Keep your voice down, otherwise
the people outside will hear you.
Do you understand?
They believe I'm a great
wizard, a sorcerer.
But you are not.
No, my little one. I'm
a poor, ordinary man.
You are less than an ordinary man.
Yes
exactly, a barker.
It's terrible, I'm not
going to have my heart?
And my courage?
So you can't give me a brain?
Please. Don't talk
to me about these stupid things.
Think about me instead. You have
found me out, I've been exposed.
Nobody else knows that you are a barker.
No! Absolutely not.
Except you four, and myself.
I cheated them so well, I didn't
believe someone could find me out.
It was a serious error, allowing
you in the throne room.
Well, you should be ashamed.
Why yes, I am ashamed.
I'm ashamed often, in the
morning, in the evening
But what do you want to do?
There was no way out.
I was mistaken for a great wizard.
So I pretended to be him,
I didn't want to disappoint them.
So can you give me a brain?
But you don't need it. Every
day you learn something.
Think about a newborn baby. He has
a brain, but he can't use it.
Only experience can make you smart.
Intelligence comes with experience.
The more you stay on the earth,
the more time you'll have the
possibility to collect experiences
and become intelligent.
What about my courage?
But you are a really brave animal.
What you lack is self-confidence.
There isn't an animal in the entire world
that isn't scared when it is in danger.
The real courage is to face
danger despite having fear
and I think that you
have this sort of courage.
And my heart, then?
Well, about that, I think that you're
making a mistake, wishing for a heart.
A heart hurts those who hold it.
If you knew what this feels like,
you would know how lucky you are.
And what about me?
How can I go back to Kansas?
How is it possible that I
don't act like a barker when
people ask me to do something
that they know is impossible?
It was simple to make the Scarecrow,
the Lion and the Tin-man happy
when they believed that
my powers were unlimited.
But how can I take
Dorothy back to Kansas?
We need a big amount of fantasy to do that.
I also know that I don't have it, poor me!
Maybe you don't have that
much fantasy, but I do.
I'm fairy Glinda and my fantasy
Is infinite, like my goodness.
Can you tell me how I can
return to Kansas, to my family?
Sure. Your magic shoes will do that.
If you only knew their power,
you could've gone back
to your family the same day
you came in to Oz's reign!
But then I wouldn't have achieved this
prodigious brain of mine from Oz.
And I would not have received this
valuable heart of mine as a gift.
And what about me? I would have
died as cowardly as I was when I was born
without being recognized as the
king of all the forest.
I'm glad to have helped my friends, but
now that all of them have achieved
what they were looking for, I would
be happy to go back to Kansas.
Your shoes are equipped with
a wonderful magic power.
One of their most remarkable powers
is that they can move whoever is
wearing them anywhere in the world
just by making three simple steps.
Each one of them don't last more than the
blink of an eye.
All you have to do is
click the heels three times
and order the shoes to
take you wherever you want.
If so, I will ask the shoes to take
me back to Kansas immediately.
The good fairy gave Dorothy a kiss goodbye.
Dorothy thanked her
for all the kindness she
showed towards her
and her three friends.
After she said goodbye to the fairy and to
her old friends, she clicked her
heels three times saying:
"magic shoes, take me
to Aunt Emma immediately".
In just a second, little Dorothy
found herself in Kansas
in front of her house, where her
family was waiting for her.
Her big adventure had finally,
and happily, come to an end.
So, teacher, it's me.
Why were you looking for me?
I just want to show you the strength that
fairytales can infuse.
Children, you should know
that, when I was a child
my grandmother and I used to
play like we did:
she read the Wizard of Oz one chapter
at a time and little by little
I became Dorothy, just like some
of you girls did in this period.
Once, at the end of the year recital
I played little Dorothy and
I learned so many things.
So I hope you have learned a lot
living through this wonderful story
with me and your classmates.
But, as in the book where Dorothy has
to go back home, I
have to leave now, too.
Tomorrow, your tenured teacher
will be coming back.
Yes it's true.
With today's lesson, your substitute
teaching period here has concluded.
Noooo!
Miss Pantanella
I want to say that I changed my
mind about your coursework.
I will propose to introduce it in
next year's program, for the entire school.
That's great!
You were awesome
I didn't understand it at first, but
I have to give you credit for all
you've done and especially for how
you lead the class, and the children.
I will put in a good word
for you at the ministry so
you can get a tenured
position as soon as possible.
Who knows, you might come to
work at this school again.
Thank you, I can't thank you enough!
Goodbye.
It's you! Come in.
To what do I owe this unexpected visit?
Listen, it's been a long time
that I've wanted to speak to you.
In my view, there are a lot of things
at this school that we should
improve, but this time I want
you to listen to me carefully.
Sure
tell me.
Are you really going to listen to me?
I believed that...
You didn't believe? No, you were wrong.
I listen to all, the only important thing
is to speak to my face, without fear.
I appreciate you coming to me
today to speak with me.
Tell me.
I just
want to say that...
I think you are a really good
headmaster and I'm very happy
to work here for you.
No, no, now enough with
compliments, I'm just a woman
who tries to do my best in
my very complicated job.
Or maybe you thought I was a witch.
No, I'm not a witch.
Gianni.
Hello Miss Pantanella,
I heard that this will be your
last day of substitute teaching.
I'm so sorry about it.
I will miss you, especially
your magic tricks, Gianni.
Thank you but I'm terrible,
a disaster... as a wizard!
Listen, do one more trick for
me, before I go.
Are you serious?
Sure, let's try!
Let's try, but I don't believe
in it so much, you know.
So, come on... choose a card
I'm not looking
I'm not looking, put it back in the deck.
Let's see.
This one!
But how did you do it, Gianni? It's exactly
the one I choose, how is it possible?
Really?
Yes!
I did it!
Yes!
This time, the trick succeeded!
I am a wizard!
- Yes I'm a wizard!
- Sure you are.
Sure you are. You shouldn't lose
your self-confidence.
If you don't lose it you will become
the greatest wizard ever, like Oz.
The powerful Oz, Oz the terrible.
Me like Oz?
Are you kidding me?
But why not? Anyone could be Oz.
The important thing is to believe in it.
The will moves the world.
Goodbye Gianni.
