Saving Savanna (2020) Movie Script

1
[Birds chirping]
[Calm piano plays]
Savanna: This wasn't an impromptu decision.
I waited.
For someone to say something.
For someone to notice
how much I was struggling.
But no one did.
No one noticed.
And that's the worst part.
So I did the only thing I could...
I jumped.
[Police sirens] EMT: Stay with me!
[Medical equipment beeping]
Nurse: Oh. You're awake!
I wouldn't do that if I were you.
Nurse: You need to rest.
Savanna: What happened?
Nurse: Don't strain yourself.
You've been through a lot recently.
I know you probably want
to know what's going on.
Let me get the doctor.
He'll be able to tell you more.
But I'll be back with some water.
Dr. James: Hello, miss winslow.
I'm Dr. Henry James,
I'll be your doctor during your stay.
How are you feeling?
Savanna: Sore.
Dr. James: Yes. Well, you're
probably going to be that way for a bit,
but rest assured, you will
live and make a full recovery.
Savanna: Im going to live?
Dr. James: Yes. Of course.
Savanna: I'm going to live.
Dr. James: Miss winslow, are you alright?
Savanna: I'm going to live!
Dr. James: Of course
I'm going to live. How?
It was a miracle you
were found when you were.
Savanna: How is it a miracle?
Dr. James: If you were found
any later, you wouldn't be here alive
at this moment.
Savanna: What if that's
exactly what I wanted?
Dr. James: Miss winslow...
Savanna: Please, leave me alone.
Dr. James: Alright.
I'll be back in a few
hours to check on you.
Dr. James: I didnt see any pertinent
information for miss winslow. Why is that?
Nurse: The address that
we had for her was...
Well, apparently she
doesn't live there anymore.
Dr. James: What about contact?
Does she have a family member
or friend, we can call?
Nurse: The last number that's
listed in any of her medical records.
It's from five years ago.
Dr. James: So you mean
to say she has no one?
Absolutely no one?
Nurse: It seems like it.
What do you plan to do, doctor James?
Dr. James: She clearly didn't
plan to make it after the fall.
Now that we know is intentional,
she needs to talk to someone...
Soon.
Nurse: I hope we can
find someone to help her.
Dr. James: If she's willing, I know someone
who'll would be eager to help.
Nurse: I know you'll do
your best to help her.
Dr. James: Let's just hope she's willing.
Savanna: (In head) You're going to live.
Nurse: Just thought I'd check in
on you before I leave for the night.
Savanna: (In head) You're going to live.
Nurse: I brought you a pillow.
Savanna: (In head) You're going to live.
Savanna: (In head) You're going to live.
Nurse: I know it can get
pretty uncomfortable...
Savanna: (Realizing) I'm going to live.
Nurse: I'll see you in the morning.
Get some rest.
Savanna: (To herself) I'm going to live.
Dr. James: Good morning, miss winslow.
How are you feeling?
Savanna: (Bitter) Like I'm alive.
Dr. James: That's to be expected.
Savanna: Is there a reason
you're here this early?
Am I ready to be released yet?
Dr. James: No.
You're not going to be released just yet.
We need to keep you under
observation for a bit longer.
Savanna: I'm fine.
Dr. James: Are you really?
Savanna: Fine enough.
Dr. James: You should eat.
Savanna: Im good.
Dr. James: No, you're not.
You haven't eaten anything
since you came in.
You need to eat.
Savanna: I'm not hungry.
Dr. James: (Sternly) Doctor's orders. Eat.
Savanna: Okay.
Dr. James: So, miss winslow...
Savanna: (Interrupts) It's Savanna.
Dr. James: Very well.
Dr. James: Savanna.
I saw in your records you
didn't have a valid address
listed or contact information
for a family member or a friend.
Can you tell me why that is?
Savanna: Its because there isn't anyone.
Dr. James: There must be someone.
A boyfriend or a college friend?
A parent.
Someone must be worried about you.
Savanna: It should be true, shouldn't it?
I'll have to disappoint you, doctor.
Dr. James: Okay, well,
what about an address?
What should I put for that?
Savanna: Nothing.
Dr. James: Nothing? Savanna: Nothing.
I don't have a home.
Not anymore.
Dr. James: (Sighs) Okay.
We're going to go on a little excursion.
Savanna: What do you mean?
Dr. James: I'll be right back.
Savanna: What am I
supposed to do with that?
Dr. James: You're going to ride in it.
Savanna: Where are you taking me?
Dr. James: Were going on a little trip.
Careful.
Watch your step.
Alright,
here we go.
Dr. James: And we're here.
Savanna: What are we doing here?
Dr. James: I think it's important
for you to talk to someone.
Savanna: Talk to someone?
What? Like a shrink?
Dr. James: More like a therapist.
Savanna: Why? What would
that even do for me?
Dr. James: You need to talk to
someone about what's going on.
Savanna: It's nothing that I can't handle.
Dr. James: Ms. Winslow...
Savanna,
sometimes
sharing life's burdens
can help make life more bearable.
Besides, doctor Samuels
is a well-trained therapist.
If you need someone to speak
to, she's the person to talk to.
She'll understand what's going on.
Savanna: You really think she's that good?
Dr. James: I do.
She cares about her patients
a lot.
Her methods can be a bit
different at times, but they work
really well.
Savanna: Really?
Dr. James: Really.
And besides,
if you don't like it, you
can leave at any time.
It's your choice.
Savanna: It's my choice. Yes.
Dr. James: Just think about it.
You don't need to decide right now.
I just wanted to show you
where her office was, just in case.
Savanna: Alright.
Dr. James: Okay, good.
Let's get you back to your room.
Savanna: (To herself) I'm going to live.
Dr. Samuels: Good evening, miss winslow.
I'm doctor Samuels.
I hear Dr. James brought you
by my office earlier.
[Savanna nods head] Dr. Samuels: Great.
I just wanted to come by
and introduce myself in person.
And to tell you personally, if you
want to come by my office anytime.
Well, I let you get
some rest, miss winslow.
Dr. Samuels: It's normal, you know;
to feel overwhelmed,
to feel sad and lonely.
Upset.
It's normal.
Just means you're a human being.
Sometimes...
Sometimes what we really need
is for someone to know we're not okay.
Someone to listen to us.
If you want.
Miss winslow,
I'll listen.
[Pensive piano music]
Savanna: (Thinking) I'm going to live.
But what does that mean?
I'm alive.
Nurse: Hey. It's going to be okay.
Savanna: How is it gonna be okay?
Im alive. Im alive.
[Savanna sobs]
Savanna: (Stoically) They
said I'm going to live.
Savanna: I'm going to live,
but every breath hurts.
Savanna: It feels like I'm suffocating.
[Off screen muffled conversation
between two female voices]
Gianna: (Bubbly) Oh, sorry.
I almost ran you over.
I haven't seen you around here before.
Dr. Samuels: Who are
you talking to, Gianna?
Oh, miss winslow.
I'm glad you came.
Savanna: (Unsure) I can come back later.
Dr. Samuels: It's okay. Gianna was
just leaving. Gianna: Yeah. No worries.
I have to head home anyway, so...
Savanna: (Unsure) If you're sure.
Dr. Samuels: (Off screen) Sure.
Gianna: It's all good.
Gianna: I'll see you later, doc.
Dr. Samuels: (Off screen) See you.
Dr. Samuels: Come on in.
Please.
Sit anywhere you like.
So, what do you think?
Savanna: About what?
Dr. Samuels: My office.
Savanna: (Hesitant) It's eclectic.
Shabby chic almost.
It's nice.
Dr. Samuels: Is that it?
Savanna: The color makes
it feel less sterile.
Dr. Samuels: That's it.
I was hoping that.
So, now that we've gotten
the pleasantries out of the way.
Do you want to tell me why you came?
Savanna: You said to stop by any time.
Dr. Samuels: I meant at Ms. Winslow.
Savanna: Savanna.
Dr. Samuels: Savanna.
Okay.
Savanna, do you want to tell me
what pushed you to come here today?
Savanna: I don't know.
I just...
Dr. Samuels: (Prying)
Wanted someone to listen?
Savanna: I don't know.
Dr. Samuels: Well...
You can tell me anything.
Talk about what you like to do.
Tell me how you're feeling.
Savanna: How I'm feeling?
Dr. Samuels: Yes. What's
going through your head?
Or, you can tell me about the other day...
I hear you weren't feeling too well?
Savanna: Yeah, that's putting it mildly.
Dr. Samuels: Or we could talk
about what landed you in the hospital.
Savanna: I dont...
Dr. Samuels: You don't have
to talk about any of that.
It's up to you.
Savanna: (Hesitates) I
just have to talk to you?
Dr. Samuels: You don't have to
do anything. I hope you will though.
You might find it takes the
weight off your shoulders.
Savanna: (Reluctantly) Okay.
[Awkward silence]
Dr. Samuels: So, what else do you think
I should do to this office?
Savanna: What do you mean?
Dr. Samuels: What else
should I do to the office?
Dr. Samuels: I like the greenery, but
it doesn't get as much light as it should.
Savanna: You could get a cactus.
Dr. Samuels: Cactus?
Dr. Samuels: I hadn't thought of that.
Savanna: Yeah. They don't
require much maintenance.
Dr. Samuels: That's good.
I don't really seem to have
enough time to care for them.
Savanna: Why is that?
Dr. Samuels: I'm not here very much.
Savanna: But you've been
here pretty frequently.
Dr. Samuels: Yeah, Im
on an as needed basis.
Usually I'm out in the field.
Savanna: The field?
Dr. Samuels: Some people
find it hard to get to me.
So, I go to them.
Savanna: Why? Why do that?
Dr. Samuels: For different reasons...
I like to let them know
they have someone to talk to.
Someone to listen.
Savanna: What's it like?
Dr. Samuels: Whats what like?
Savanna: What's it like
to do what you love?
To have a purpose.
What's it like to...
Wake up in the morning and
know exactly what you want to do?
I mean, what's it like to go to bed at
night feeling proud and accomplished?
What's it like, Dr. Samuels?
Because I've never felt that way.
Savanna: Ive never felt that way.
Dr. Samuels: Well, you could
learn to feel that way.
Savanna: I don't think that's
possible at this point.
I just wanted it to end.
Dr. Samuels: Are you talking
about the day you fell?
Savanna: I didn't fall, Dr. Samuels.
I jumped.
Dr. Samuels: Well, how
do you feel about it now?
Savanna: I don't know.
Dr. Samuels: Was it worth it?
Savanna: I don't know.
I don't know what I'm supposed to do.
I jumped, okay?
And that was supposed to be it.
But yet here I am, alive.
I used to have a lot of friends.
You could call them that.
I was always out of the house,
shopping,
eating, partying.
You name it.
I was always out of the house
with these friends.
But, you know, one day I woke
up and realized that I was the one
calling them all the time,
asking them to do things.
So I waited...
And I waited.
I just wanted to see if theyd miss me.
Yeah, but no one called.
No one cared.
Dr. Samuels: What about your family?
Savanna: What family?
My step mom who hates me.
And my dad, who just wants to please her.
See, they're never around.
I have a better chance
at seeing Santa claus.
I sold everything, you know.
My condo,
my car.
I was so prepared.
I was so tired of waiting.
So to be sitting here right now...
Alive...
It's overwhelming.
So overwhelming.
To the point where I just wanted to stop.
I don't know what I'm supposed to do.
I have nothing.
I am nothing.
Dr. Samuels: That's where you're wrong.
Savanna, you're not nothing;
but until you believe that
it's going to be difficult.
Savanna: (Sighs) Then
what do you suggest I do?
Dr. Samuels: What do
you want to do, Savanna?
Savanna: I don't want to feel like this.
Dr. Samuels: Says here in your file
that you're going to be discharged soon.
You have a choice.
Savanna: I do?
Dr. Samuels: Sure.
Continue on the way you
have been, or work with me.
Savanna: What are you saying?
Dr. Samuels: Im saying
I'd like to help you.
I'd like to get you on the right path.
You give me six months,
and you get room and board.
Savanna: What's the catch?
Dr. Samuels: There's no catch.
You just accompany me in the field.
Savanna: Why help me like this?
Dr. Samuels: Savanna, life is stressful
and overwhelming, and can be bad.
But sometimes it's good.
Sometimes we just need a reminder.
Can I give you this?
Savanna: What is it?
Dr. Samuels: Well, its
something tangible and physical.
It's a reminder for me.
Things I've been through,
and what I've gone through.
That I'm still here.
Maybe it can be the same for you.
[Deep sigh]
[Nature sounds]
[Door creaks]
Dr. Samuels: Come on in.
[Tentative, hopeful
piano music lowly plays]
Dr. Samuels: You coming in?
Here. This is yours.
Savanna: Thanks.
Dr. Samuels: So I'm probably
going to start dinner in a little bit,
but would you like to see your room first?
Savanna: Sure.
Dr. Samuels: Great. Come on.
[Door creaks]
Dr. Samuels: I know it's kind
of empty, but it's yours.
Savanna: Thanks.
Dr. Samuels: Since it's yours, you can decorate
it however you want while you stay here.
Savanna: Really?
Dr. Samuels: Yeah. I'd like
to see what you do with it.
Savanna: It's a blank canvas.
Dr. Samuels: So you have
full use of the common areas.
Youll have to do some chores.
I'll lend you some clothes.
Just make a list of things you
need, and we'll go to the store.
I'm going to get dinner.
Let me know if you need anything.
Savanna: Okay.
Where should I write it?
Dr. Samuels: There's a
pen and paper in the desk.
[Overwhelmed sigh]
Savanna: What is this?
[Door shuts]
Dr. Samuels: Oh, you're just in time.
Do you mind putting out the
silverware at all the plates?
Savanna: Three place settings?
Dr. Samuels: Yeah. Poor gian...
[Hurried footsteps] Gianna: Hi, doc.
Hi. Um...
I'm not saying that I did anything...
Dr. Samuels: (Frantic) What?
Gianna: You may want to check on
glanna: The quiche. Because
its not supposed to be lopsided.
Gianna: Hi.
Savanna: Uh, hi.
Gianna: I don't know if you remember me.
Savanna: You're that
girl from the hospital.
Gianna: Yes.
[Clanking of silverware]
Savanna: (Awkwardly) Uh, so...
Gianna: So...
Um, I'm not always this...
Dr. Samuels: Dramatic?
Gianna: That's not what I was going to say.
Dr. Samuels: How about theatrical?
Melodramatic?
Dr. Samuels: (Exasperated)
Oh, come on, doc.
Now we're never going to be
able to be friends with...
Savanna: Savanna.
Gianna: I don't even know
my new best friends name.
Savanna: Best friend?
Gianna: Now she doesn't
want to be friends with me.
Gianna: (Dramatically) Uh, Im ruined, doc.
Dr. Samuels: See what I mean?
Gianna: Ruined.
This is all your fault.
Dr. Samuels: The quiche is not ruined.
Gianna: Can I have more?
It's not big enough for me.
Dr. Samuels: Thank you very much.
Savanna?
No more for you.
[Frustrated sigh]
[Silverware clanking]
Gianna: So, Savanna,
how do you like this place?
Savanna: It's nice.
Gianna: Just nice?
You don't think it's cool or...
Fantastic?
Savanna: I mean, I've only
been here for a few hours.
Gianna: Excuses, excuses.
Oh, I forgot our drinks.
Dr. Samuels: I hope you're not
having second thoughts about staying.
Savanna: No, I... Gianna is just...
Dr. Samuels: Overwhelming.
Savanna: But that's fine. I...
I don't mind.
Dr. Samuels: Good. I'm glad.
She means well.
Shes got a big heart.
Like most people she's had her hardships.
Gianna: Yours... and yours.
Gianna: And I have to get my own.
Dr. Samuels: Thank you.
Gianna: I got us lemonade.
Fill me in. What did I miss?
Dr. Samuels: Nothing. Just peace and quiet.
Which I enjoyed for a little while.
Gianna: (Sarcastic laughter)
You're so funny, doc.
Dr. Samuels: (Laughs) I know right?
Gianna: (Playfully) I was going
to give you some lemonade, but
I guess not.
Actually, none of you
are getting any lemonade.
Because you snorted.
You're supposed to be on my side.
What happened to our friendship?
Dr. Samuels: I want lemonade.
Gianna: Fine! All for me.
[Light knock on door]
Gianna: Hey! Savanna: Hey.
Gianna: You can come in.
Savanna: I didn't want to intrude.
Gianna: It's not an intrusion.
Savanna: What's this?
Gianna: Mm. Got that one
when I went spelunking in Virginia.
That's also where I found out
they may be a bit claustrophobic.
Savanna: Really?
Gianna: Yeah.
I may have made all the
bats fly at my group.
With the decibel level that my voice hit.
My tour guide hated me after that.
Savanna: What about this?
How'd you get this one?
[Gianna sighs]
Gianna: I got that one
during a not so great time.
Savanna: What happened?
Gianna: You really want to know?
Savanna: If you don't mind.
Gianna: Um...
I had just failed the
biggest test of my life.
That sounds so stupid
when I say it out loud.
But the test really mattered for my future.
For me.
I had studied so hard throughout school.
I got straight a's.
I studied all the time.
I didn't party, I didn't get into trouble.
I had no friends.
Yeah. I was that student.
And at first,
I didn't mind the pressure.
Kept me in check.
[Deep sigh]
But soon
all I could think about was
how perfect I had to be.
Every grade had to be perfect.
I had to be perfect.
And I started to feel
this anxiety and stress
like you wouldn't believe.
I didn't know what to do.
That's why when I failed
the test that I had been
preparing for, I thought that was it.
My whole life was over.
So I thought before I took my final bow,
I could have one last night
of doing what I wanted to do.
No pressure, no pretenses.
And I did.
I did everything that I wanted to
without regret.
Savanna: But what about the camera?
How did you get it?
Gianna: Well, after I had one
of the craziest nights of my life,
[hopeful piano music fades in]
Gianna: I found that I still felt
stuck.
And I didn't know how to deal with it.
So I went home,
opened up my parents
medicine cabinet, and...
Yeah. I just shovel pills down my mouth.
And the next thing I remember, I'm
waking up in the hospital meeting doc.
I don't know.
At the time, I just felt
like I was such a...
Savanna: Disappointment?
Gianna: Yeah.
Disappointment.
You know, you're just
expecting to get it over with,
but you dont.
Savanna: Instead, you're
alive and you don't know
how to deal with that.
Gianna: Yes, exactly.
Savanna: What about this?
What's the story with this one?
Gianna: Hm.
I got the snow globe
maybe two summers ago.
I was going through a bit of a rough
time, and I needed an escaped, so
I stole my mom's car.
I was using cash, and I drove
for three days straight.
I mean, except for gas and food.
[Sighs]
When I got there...
I dont know...
I remember parking and
walking towards the bridge.
And as I started walking,
this little voice inside my head
kept telling me to look
out over the bridge.
I remember thinking to myself,
I could just hop out over the
side and no one would notice.
I had to force myself to
turn around and keep walking.
Just walk.
If you can make it across
the bridge, you'll be fine.
That's what I kept telling myself.
[Gianna chuckles]
And I think I got about halfway across
before I broke down.
But you know, I guess that
was the release that I needed.
Savanna: You really have a story
for each of these items, don't you?
Gianna: Well, of course.
When I tell people about
each of these items,
it reminds me that I've
lived; That I made it through.
And that's also why I
started taking pictures.
You know,
every time I look at these items
and images, the memories,
it reminds me that
there's another day.
And sometimes
that's all I really need.
That sounds really cheesy.
Savanna: No,
I get it.
Gianna: I'm glad.
[Interrupting knock on door]
Dr. Samuels: Hi, sorry to interrupt.
I have some clothes and
toiletries for you to.
Savanna: Thanks.
Dr. Samuels: Don't mention it.
Oh, and before I forget, I'd like
you to accompany me tomorrow
when I visit a patient.
Savanna: Tomorrow?
Dr. Samuels: Yeah, tomorrow. It'll be okay.
Don't worry.
Gianna is going to go with us, too.
Savanna: Okay, but...
What do I do on these visits?
Gianna: Oh. It's not difficult.
We just...
We get to talk to people and then
we help out where we're needed.
It's all really simple.
Dr. Samuels: Yeah.
Like Gianna said, it's not hard at all.
Savanna: Okay, if you say so.
Dr. Samuels: I think you'll do well.
Who knows? You might even
find out you enjoy it.
Gianna: You know,
you really don't have
anything to worry about.
Savanna: Yeah, I know I
shouldn't worry, but...
Gianna: Youre worrying?
Savanna: Yeah.
Gianna: Well, if it's of any
comfort, I will be there as well.
Savanna: Well, that's good.
[Gianna claps hands] Gianna: Oh! Does that
mean we're finally best friends?
Savanna: (Teasing) Uh, I don't know.
We've only known each
other for a few hours.
Gianna: (Dramatically) Oh! My heart.
Oh, my heart.
Why must you be like this?
My friend, my only friend.
Why must you be so mean?
Savanna: Good night, Gianna.
Gianna: Oh!
You're just going to leave me here?
[Door clanks shut]
Traitorous friend!
Savanna: (Whispering) What
have I got myself into?
I'm alive.
I wonder...
But who cares?
Gianna: (Off screen) Savanna, wake up!
Well be leaving in 30 minutes.
Gianna: (Off screen)
Savanna, did you hear me?
Savanna: (Grumbling) I heard you.
Gianna: (Kindly) I was just checking.
You didn't answer, so I
wanted to see if youre okay.
[Ruffling sheets]
[Birds chirping]
[Door slams shut]
Gianna: Savanna, you don't
have a thing to worry about today.
Because the guy we're going
to visit is really nice. Right?
Savanna: What's his name?
Gianna: Seamus. Seamus Callaghan.
Dr. Samuels: Seamus is a really lively guy.
Gianna: You could say that.
Dr. Samuels: Yeah, yeah,
he's got a lot of energy.
Gianna: And he has the best stories.
Savanna: Better than yours?
Gianna: Hm. You know, I'm not sure
if anyone has better stories than mine.
Savanna: That's a bold claim.
Gianna: It's not a claim if it's true.
Dr. Samuels: Were here.
Gianna: Yay! [Claps hands excitedly]
Let's go see Seamus.
You guys ready?
Dr. Samuels: Oh yeah. Gianna: Ready?
Gianna: Ready?
Gianna: You're Seamus, my dude.
Seamus: Is that my favorite pipsqueak?
[Deep sigh] Gianna: Pipsqueak?
You must be going blind, old man.
Seamus: Not if I go deaf first.
Could you be any louder?
Dr. Samuels: Hey, Seamus.
Seamus: Hello, doc, how are you?
Dr. Samuels: Im alright. How are you?
Seamus: Who's this?
Dr. Samuels: Well, Seamus, let
me introduce you to Savanna winslow.
She's going to be helping
me out a little bit.
Savanna: Nice to meet you.
Seamus: A handshake?
Seamus: I don't think I've
done one of those in years.
Last time is when I conned my
way into the governors ball in 82.
Savanna: You conned your way
into the governor's ball?
Gianna: (Dramatically) Oh, my god!
You just had to ask him.
Now he's never going to shut up.
Seamus: (Jokingly) Pipsqueak. Shut up.
Let the adults speak.
I had this friend named Jerry.
He was a real piece of work.
Played life kind of fast and loose.
Plans? He never had em. Decisions?
He never made em.
But hed do one thing really well.
He could get people to do
things he wanted them to do.
Where was I?
Dr. Samuels: Seamus, how
about we take this inside?
Seamus: That's a great idea.
My knees are starting to
creak like a rusty hinge.
[Dr. Samuels chuckles]
Savanna: (Whispering)
Is he always like this?
Gianna: Every time.
But he means well.
Savanna: Well. That's something.
Gianna: It certainly is.
Seamus: I'll fix you
ladies something to drink.
And then I'll show you.
Dr. Samuels: You don't
have to do that, Seamus.
Seamus: I could do it.
Dr. Samuels: Well, I know you can.
Im just looking out
for you, you know that.
Seamus: Doc, I'm not dead yet.
Dr. Samuels: I know, but
you're supposed to take it easy
after your last accident, right?
Seamus: You know, I can't just
sit around, wait for the end to come.
Dr. Samuels: How do we go to
the kitchen and talk for a few minutes.
Girls?
How about you put together that bookshelf?
Gianna: No problem, doc.
Well...
Looks like we got stuck
with manual labor this time.
Savanna: Looks like it.
Gianna: I think we'll need some tools...
I'll go get them from the garage,
and we can get started when I get back.
Savanna: Okay.
Gianna: Awesome.
Gianna: I've got the tool kit.
What are you looking at?
Savanna: Nothing, really.
Gianna: If you say so.
Savanna: We probably get started, right?
Gianna: Yeah, I guess.
Do you have any idea how to
build one of these things?
Savanna: No idea.
The closest I ever came to
building anything was my website...
And that was just dragging
and dropping assets.
Gianna: You have a website?
Savanna: Did.
Gianna: (Cautiously) Before your accident?
Savanna: Yeah.
Gianna: Well, looks like today's the day
that we're both going to
build one of these things.
Savanna: Looks like it.
Gianna: Alright, then,
let's get started.
[Tools clank together]
[Upbeat piano music fades in]
Gianna: We did it!
We successfully built that thing.
Savanna: I'm actually
surprised it's standing.
Gianna: Why are you surprised?
I knew we could do it.
Savanna: (Sarcastically) Oh, I dont know.
I mean, after you hit your hand
with the hammer for the fifth time,
I was sure we'd have to
take you to the hospital.
[Gianna snorts]
Gianna: I'm much tougher than I look.
And no bookshelf is going
to get the better of me.
Savanna: So you running around the family
room with your hand cradle to your chest
and tears streaming down your
face because you pinned your hand
between the bookshelf and the wall
isnt considered losing to the bookshelf?
Gianna: Hm. Definitely not.
Savanna: Whatever you say.
Seamus: You guys built it!
Savanna: Yeah. We did.
Dr. Samuels: How? How did you do that?
Gianna: Be proud!
We did not succeed without sacrifices.
Seamus: Pipsqueak,
you might consider not doing
projects like this in the future.
Gianna: You may be right, old man.
You may be right.
Seamus: Listen, I really
appreciate what you guys did for me.
It looks wonderful.
Savanna: You're welcome.
Seamus: Um...
Would you mind moving that
to the bedroom in a little while?
Savanna: Sure.
Seamus: Oh, doc, I forgot...
Gianna: You know...
I'm glad you came today.
Savanna: Really?
Gianna: If you hadn't been here, I
would have had to do this all by myself.
Savanna: So that's the real reason.
Gianna: In all honesty,
it's just nice to have
someone to talk to you.
Don't you think?
Savanna: Yeah.
Yeah, I agree.
[Door creaks]
Seamus: And that's when I decided that
skydiving that wasn't for me. And sound medic.
Gianna: Well that was a little dramatic.
And after that, its nothing
the John couldn't help.
Gianna: (Gagging sound) Come on, old man.
That was more information than I needed.
Dr. Samuels: (Jokingly) Seamus,
what are we going to do with you?
Seamus: I'm just being myself.
You know, when you get to be my age,
you find a lot of things that
you thought were insurmountable,
are really unimportant.
Besides, doc, you're the one
that told me to always be myself.
Dr. Samuels: (Sarcastically)
Oh, now you listen.
Seamus: (Laughs) What can I say?
Gianna: We'll be seeing you, old man.
Seamus: Yeah, I'm sure you will.
Seamus: (Joking) Pipsqueak,
you can't seem to leave me alone.
Gianna: (Sarcastically) I can't.
I just can't.
Dr. Samuels: Seamus, you take care.
Call me if you need anything.
Seamus: I won't call you
for anything unimportant.
Dr. Samuels: Nothing's too small.
You call me.
Seamus: You've made your point.
Seamus: Thank you for coming.
I know that doc has a tendency
to bring people along.
She can't help it.
She's a good woman.
Shes been through a few things in life.
Came out alive.
I think that's the reason
she helps so many people.
Savanna: She always seems
so put together, though.
Seamus: Yes. She does, but...
But I found the people who have a big smile on
their face, are usually the ones who suffer most.
Savanna: I never thought
about it like that.
Seamus: What do I know? I'm just an old man
that's been through a few things in life.
Savanna: Good night, Seamus.
Seamus: Good night, kid.
[Bag rustles]
Savanna: (Reading) Savanna,
sometimes writing down convoluted
thoughts and emotions can
help untangle their web.
Write to anyone.
About anyone.
This is your book.
I hope it helps.
Sincerely, doc.
Savanna: (Voiceover) It's
funny how the night works.
For some...
It's where they thrive,
where they feel the most alive.
For people like me, though,
the night is terrifying.
Even if you are laughing and smiling and...
Happy hours ago.
In the night...
In the night it's like that brief
moment of happiness, of clarity,
of breathing, didn't matter.
Instead,
once the lights dim and
the darkness settles in,
and youre left alone
with your thoughts, your regrets
and your loneliness
all slowly suffocating you.
It's these moments that
constantly weigh you down,
constantly whisper in your mind
about how sweet the end could be.
That's how I found myself
standing on that bridge.
That's why I jumped.
Because for a little
while my mind was quiet
and the darkness didn't scare me.
Maybe one day
I'd learn how to feel alive.
Not just in the daylight,
but in the night as well.
[Birds chirping]
Dr. Samuels: (Off screen)
Girls well be leaving in 30.
Gianna: (Off screen) Dang it!
Dr. Samuels: (Off screen) You okay?
Gianna: Yeah. Im okay.
You just startled me, doc.
[Nature sounds]
Gianna: Old man would
love that, wouldnt he?
Savanna: Were seeing Seamus today?
Dr. Samuels: No, not today.
No, we're seeing someone else.
Were going to see Whitney.
[Claps hands] Gianna: Oh,
were seeing Whitney today?
Dr. Samuels: Yes.
Gianna: (Contemplative) I
wonder if she's still annoyed with me.
Dr. Samuels: Well, I might be if you wrote,
Whitney loves Ryan all over my homework.
Gianna: She was never going
to make the first move.
Dr. Samuels: Oh, why did you do
that to her? She's such a sweetheart.
Gianna: She's a teenager.
You know how they are.
Everything is a bigger
deal than it really is.
Savanna: Is she nice, at least?
Dr. Samuels: Of course.
Savanna: Well, that's all I need to know.
[Car engine] [Nature sounds]
Gianna: You ready?
[Car door closes]
Whitney: (Off screen) You came.
Dr. Samuels: Of course we did.
How are you?
[Whitney chuckles]
Whitney: Gigi, we have
so much to talk about.
Gianna: Oh, yeah?
Is this about...
Ryan?
Whitney: Shut up!
But yes, it is about Ryan.
Gianna: No way!
Yes! He lent me his pen in class
and then told me he'd see me around.
[Chuckles giddily] Can you believe it?
Gianna: Well, look at you.
Where is whit whit,
and what have you done with her?
Whitney: Shut up, gigi.
Gianna: And what did you say to him?
Whitney: I said, we'll see.
And rolled away just
like you said I should.
Gianna: I'm so proud of you, whit whit.
Whitney: Do you think I did well?
You know I don't know how to flirt.
Gianna: Do I think you did well? I
couldn't have done better even if I tried.
Whitney: Oh, man, you must think I'm crazy.
Savanna: No, not at all.
And I'm sure Gianna has
done crazier things.
Gianna: Of course I have.
How do you expect people to remember me?
Dr. Samuels: Of course she has.
Alright, girls. Lets go inside.
Whitney: You guys will come back soon?
Gianna: Of course we will, whit whit.
Whitney: And you'll come with them, right?
Savanna: Someone has to
save you from Gianna.
Gianna: Hey! Whitney: Exactly.
Dr. Samuels: We got a big day tomorrow.
We better head out.
Gianna: If we must, doc.
If we must.
Dr. Samuels: We'll see you
again soon, sweetheart.
Whitney: Thank you guys so much for coming.
Savanna: What's on your mind?
Whitney: It's nothing much, really.
It's just.
It's just lonely when you guys aren't here.
Gianna: It is, huh?
Savanna: I mean, where are your parents?
Are they around?
Whitney: They work a lot, so
they're never really home.
Savanna: I'm sorry for bringing it up.
Whitney: It's okay. You didn't know.
I don't blame them.
It's just...
Gianna: You wish they were here more.
Whitney: Yeah, cause then
I could get out more.
Svanna: Maybe we can take you out, right?
Gianna: Yeah.
Whitney: (Chuckles) Really?
Savanna: Yeah. Why not?
Whitney: Thank you.
Savanna: It's no big deal. Really.
Gianna: Well, we got to get going.
Are you going to be okay here?
Whitney: Of course I will.
I'm Whitney Larsen.
Gianna: Theres the whit whit I know.
We'll see you later. Bye, Whitney.
Whitney: See you guys soon.
[Door creaks]
[Throat clears off screen]
Gianna: You scared me.
Savanna: (Off screen) Sorry.
I didn't mean to.
Gianna: That's okay. What's up?
Savanna: Is Whitney really
home by herself all the time?
Gianna: Yeah, usually.
Savanna: Doesn't she have
any friends her own age?
Gianna: No. I don't think she really
gets along with everyone at her school.
Apparently, she's hard to hang out with.
Savanna: That must be hard.
Gianna: Yeah.
Savanna: So she doesn't get out much then?
Gianna: No. In the mornings,
she has to make her way down
to the school bus by herself.
And she also gets ready by herself.
Savanna: She's strong.
Gianna: Of course she is. Shes whit whit.
Savanna: What about you?
Gianna: What do you mean?
Savanna: You've mentioned
your parents before.
Gianna: Yeah.
They're alive.
But I don't think I'll be
going back home anytime soon.
Savanna: Why not?
Gianna: This is my mom.
Savanna: She looks like you.
Gianna: Everyone says that.
Savanna: So why not go back?
Gianna: Um...
I've been here for about a year,
and I feel like I've only just started
discovering what I want out of life.
I think if I leave now...
Savanna: You'll go back
to how you used to be?
Gianna: Yeah.
You know,
my mom is very successful
and very intelligent.
Vice president of her company, Yale,
and the list just keeps going on.
But after she and my father got divorced,
I just wanted to make her proud.
I wanted to be just like her.
But I'm not.
I'm not as smart as she is.
It's hard for me to make friends on my own.
And you know, I suck at being a handyman.
I just didn't want to disappoint her.
You know, I wanted her to be proud of me.
Oh, but it's so hard, Savanna.
It's so tiring.
It's so tiring.
Savanna: So, maybe it's a good
thing you're here with doc.
So that when you do go back,
there will be no denying
who the real Gianna is.
Savanna: Thanks, Savanna.
[Running faucet]
Savanna: Morning.
Dr. Samuels: Morning.
How'd you sleep?
Savanna: I couldn't. Not really.
Dr. Samuels: Want to talk about it?
Savanna: I don't know
what there's talk about.
I just couldn't sleep.
Dr. Samuels: Tell me what
was going through your head.
Savanna: I don't know.
I was sad.
I just keep feeling like I'm suffocating.
And every time I think that I
might be able to get through this
something just reminds
me of how stuck I feel.
Dr. Samuels: When do you
feel like this the most?
Savanna: Nighttime.
Definitely.
Savanna: It just sucks.
Yesterday was a pretty good day.
I felt like I could breathe, you know?
And I felt like something I did mattered.
But then last night, I...
I don't know, I'm so stupid.
Dr. Samuels: You're not. You're not stupid.
Savanna: Thanks for saying that,
doc, but you don't have to lie to me.
Dr. Samuels: I'm not lying to you.
I'm not just saying things, Savanna.
Ever since we met, you've
been putting yourself down.
Its like youre your own worst enemy.
Youve got to learn to encourage yourself.
You can't wait for others to do it.
Savanna: You know, that's
great in theory, but I...
Dr. Samuels: I know... how
do you put it into practice?
Savanna: Exactly.
Dr. Samuels: Well...
It's not easy,
but I think with practice you could learn.
What did you think you
would do when you came here?
Savanna: I don't know.
Listen in on your sessions?
Dr. Samuels: And have you been?
Savanna: No.
Dr. Samuels: What have
you been doing instead?
Savanna: Helping your patients.
Dr. Samuels: Right.
Helping them physically.
Tangibly.
My job is to help my
patients with their minds,
but sometimes they need physical help too.
Our culture likes to put
people in nice, neat,
non-confrontational containers.
You like to value people for their use.
Intelligent people for their minds;
funny people for their humor;
beautiful people for how they look.
But what if an intelligent
person was funny,
or a beautiful person was
more than just their looks?
What then?
Savanna: I don't know.
Dr. Samuels: Then they wouldn't
fit in their little boxes anymore.
People aren't their labels.
They're complicated and multifaceted.
Sometimes they don't do
what we think they should.
That's okay.
Savanna: But how does that help?
Dr. Samuels: It's two-fold.
Savanna: (Off screen) Yeah?
Dr. Samuels: My patients
get help mentally and physically,
and you benefit.
Savanna: But how do I benefit?
Dr. Samuels: You learn something,
change your focus.
Change your perspective.
Savanna: What does that mean?
Dr. Samuels: Life is hard...
Difficult...
We know that sometimes we lose sight,
get in a funk,
miss the silver lining...
That's when the darkness sets in.
What I want you to know is
if you change your focus,
if you change what you're focusing on,
you could change your
whole perspective on life.
Understand?
Savanna: I think I do.
Dr. Samuels: It's not going to be easy.
It's easier to let things fall around us.
But I think you can do it.
[Door closes]
Gianna: What are thinking about?
Gianna: Sorry, I didn't want
to scare you. Savanna: Its fine.
Savanna: It's fine. Don't worry about it.
Gianna: What had you so deep in thought?
Savanna: I don't know...
Just something doc was telling me earlier.
Gianna: Yeah?
Savanna: Yeah.
She told me I have to change my
focus in order to change my perspective.
Gianna: That sounds about right.
Savanna: You think it's possible?
Gianna: I think so.
I mean, it worked for me.
You know, once I stopped focusing on
everything that I thought went
wrong or that I say all that in life,
I could start to focus on
things that really matter to me.
Savanna: So you're a real walking testament
to doc's way of doing things, huh?
Gianna: I guess you could say that.
Look, just don't...
Don't think too much about it.
I think,
you know, once you start to
enjoy new experiences in life,
you start to get some clarity.
Savanna: (Whispering) Maybe you're right.
Savanna: (Voiceover) Dear Savanna,
you've discovered that you
kind of enjoy this place.
Being surrounded by these people.
You got roped into another task today,
but you don't really mind.
You actually kind of enjoy it.
Today, you just talked.
No filter. No pretenses.
You completely expressed what you thought,
and it was freeing.
Today, you laughed like full belly,
stomach aching, laughed.
You're still not used to this yet,
and it's an odd feeling,
but it's a feeling you could get used to.
Today, you volunteered to help someone,
and you really meant it.
It feels weird, doesn't it?
Not only does it feel strange
to want to help someone,
but it's a weird feeling not
being the one that needs help.
Dear Savanna,
you're getting better, aren't you?
Gianna: (Groaning) Oh, my stomach hurts.
Seamus: Stop your whining.
Gianna: I think I ate too much food.
Seamus: No one told you
to eat eight pieces.
Gianna: You did! You told me to.
Seamus: I didn't tell you to.
Gianna: (Grumbling) Fine. You
dared me to. Its the same thing.
Seamus: Youve got no one to
blame but yourself, pipsqueak.
Gianna: Do you hear him, doc?
Dr. Samuels: Me? No.
I didn't hear anything.
Gianna: Doc, you're
supposed to be on my side.
Dr. Samuels: Gianna, you
know I can't take sides.
Gianna: You.
Savanna: What?
Gianna: Don't you think the old
man has been treating me terribly?
Savanna: This chicken is so good, right?
Gianna: Savanna!
Savanna: What kind of spices do they use?
Dr. Samuels: It's good.
Gianna: This isnt over, old man.
Seamus: Whatever you say, pipsqueak.
Whatever you say.
Dr. Samuels: What do you say? Why
don't we get this movie night started?
[Gianna snores]
Seamus: You don't have to get up.
Savanna: (Off screen) No, let me help you.
Let me take it for you.
[Birds chirping]
Seamus: Thank you, kid. I appreciate it.
Savanna: It's okay.
We did invade your privacy.
Seamus: I don't mind.
I like a lively house from time to time.
Besides, sometimes it's just too quiet.
Savanna: Yeah?
I think you'd like a quiet house.
Especially after Gianna visits.
Seamus: Well, silence
isnt always the best.
Sometimes it can be deafening.
Savanna: Really?
Seamus: Really.
You start to think about
anything and everything.
You think about things you did.
You think about things you didn't do.
And you start to think about
people you really miss too.
The mind works in a kind of strange way...
There in the silence,
if you let it in,
you forget all the good things.
You start to remember only the bad things.
You know what I mean?
Savanna: Yeah, I do.
Seamus: That's why I enjoy so much
having you all over.
It gives me a little insight as to what
life would have been like if
my wife and I had daughters.
[Seamus chuckles]
Savanna: (Jokingly) You
know, maybe Gianna is right.
You are mean.
Seamus: Only to her.
You know, my wife and I wanted kids.
My wife insisted on two girls and one boy.
And I don't care how many times I told her
you just can't plan for things like that.
She insisted on it.
Two girls, one boy.
Because she said, and I quote,
girls are always smarter.
Savanna: You know, she
sounds like a firecracker.
Seamus: Yeah, she was.
She was as spontaneous as she was kind.
I miss her a lot.
Savanna: Hey, Seamus.
Seamus: Yeah, kid? What's on your mind?
Savanna: Thanks for letting us come over.
It means a lot.
You know, before doc took me in...
Before I jumped off the bridge...
I had a lot.
You know, physical things,
but I didn't have anything really personal.
You know?
The people that I knew...
My friends, my family...
I was already invisible to them.
You know, it already felt
like I didn't matter.
And it seemed like no
matter how hard I tried
to get them to see me, you
know, just to look at me...
It never worked.
You know, it got to the
point where it just felt like
it didn't matter anymore
and that I didn't matter.
So I sold my car.
I sold my house.
I got rid of anything that
would tie me to the people
who just didn't care about me.
And I jumped.
I was convinced that death
would be better for me.
Then I woke up in the hospital.
And it felt like I had failed.
I couldn't even to death right.
That's what I thought.
But then I met doc,
and Gianna and you and Whitney,
and you guys treated me like I mattered.
You guys saw me.
Thank you, Seamus.
Seamus: No. Thank you, kid.
Thank you.
Gianna: Do you like this one better?
Savanna: Sure.
Gianna: Hey, you didn't even look at it.
Savanna: Which one are you comparing it to?
Gianna: These two.
Savanna: This one.
Gianna: Good choice.
Savanna: Are you putting it on your wall?
Gianna: Yeah.
It's a memory, and I want
to remember it frequently.
Savanna: It's a good one.
Gianna: But where to put it?
Savanna: Right there.
Gianna: This one?
Savanna: Can I keep this one?
Gianna: Yeah. Savanna: Thanks.
Gianna: What are our best friends for?
Savanna: (Sarcastically) Ha ha.
[Knock on door]
Savanna: Come in.
Dr. Samuels: Hey. I wanted to see
if you wanted to get something to eat.
Savanna: Yeah, sure. What do you wanna eat?
Dr. Samuels: Can I see that?
Savanna: Here you go.
Dr. Samuels: Haven't seen this in a while.
Savanna: Doc, is that your sonogram?
Dr. Samuels: Yeah. Yeah. It is.
Savanna: You never mentioned you had kids.
Dr. Samuels: I don't.
Savanna: What happened?
Dr. Samuels: Let's go sit.
Savanna: Okay.
Dr. Samuels: So I was
married a long time ago.
I met a man, and in a couple
of months, we got married.
Savanna: Just a couple months?
Dr. Samuels: Yeah. I
was young and impulsive.
And, it was really good for a while.
He was considerate and hed
cook for me... even fill my gas tank.
Hed even push me to do the things I love.
Savanna: You really loved him.
Dr. Samuels: In some ways, I still do.
Savanna: So what happened?
You're not wearing a ring.
Dr. Samuels: No, we're not married anymore.
Savanna: What happened?
Dr. Samuels: Well, a lot of things, but
I got pregnant.
He was so happy.
We were so happy.
We... bought furniture and
clothes and accessories...
We were so happy to start our family.
And then I had complications
with the pregnancy.
And I didnt take it well;
And he didn't either.
It was a strain on our marriage.
Then one day, I lost the baby.
I was devastated.
Took it out on him
and he took it out on me.
Savanna: I'm so sorry that
you had to go through that.
Dr. Samuels: And then...
One day, I get a phone call
that he's been in an accident.
[Shaky breaths]
He died instantly.
And I lost my baby
and my husband.
It was too much.
It was just devastating.
I was filled with anger and grief and
so many emotions warring in that.
I wanted it to stop.
I decided to make it stop.
I went to the bathroom and I got a razor.
Both arms.
Savanna: You tried to kill yourself?
Dr. Samuels: Yeah.
I did.
Savanna: What happened?
I mean, clearly your
attempt wasnt successful.
Dr. Samuels: When I woke up,
there was a woman there.
Like a candy stripper.
She'd visit me a lot.
I used to tell her I
was ashamed of my scars.
I didn't want people to see them.
She said the nicest things she said,
everybody has scars.
Why should you be ashamed of yours?
Your stories... and your
story might help someone.
And then she gave me these bracelets.
And she said to give one to
someone else who needs it more than me.
That's how I knew what you've gone through.
Savanna: How come you
didn't give one to Gianna?
Dr. Samuels: Giannas different.
She didn't mean end up in a hospital.
That was a whim.
But you.
I knew from when I first saw you,
you wanted it to be over.
I didn't know if you would
stop until you succeeded.
I knew you needed what's
behind these bracelets.
To know that someone cares.
I care.
Savanna: Thank you, doc.
[Gianna yawns]
Savanna: Morning, sunshine.
Gianna: What's got you so peppy?
Savanna: I couldnt tell you.
I just woke up this
morning and felt lighter.
Gianna: I'm glad you're feeling better.
Savanna: Thank you.
What?
Gianna: I don't know if
you drink it like that.
Savanna: We all don't like
coffee with our milk, gi.
Gianna: Touch.
Savanna: What are you eating?
Thats your breakfast?
Gianna: Mhm. Cheers.
Dr. Samuels: (Off screen) Savanna. Savanna.
Sorry. Can you go to seamus?
I have to finish this call,
and I don't want him to...
Gianna: What about me?
Dr. Samuels: Once you get
changed, then you can go to.
All right.
Savanna: Yeah. Let me grab my phone first.
Dr. Samuels: Alright. Thank you.
Thank you. Very much.
Gianna: I gotta go.
[Nature sounds]
[Savanna knocks on the door]
[Savanna knocks harder on the door]
Savanna: (Off screen) Seamus.
[Door creaks open]
Savanna: Seamus!
Seamus, wake up!
Seamus.
Seamus! Wake up!
Seamus.
Seamus! Wake up!
Seamus.
Seamus, please wake up.
Seamus, please wake up.
Seamus, please wake up.
[Somber piano music]
Savanna: (Voiceover) Seamus.
Oh, Seamus.
When I saw you lying there,
all I could think about
was how I must have looked.
Was I is still and pale as you?
Was there anyone who
would have cried for me?
That night you told me that we
reminded you of what you could have had;
But I have long since
considered you my family.
I wish I could have told you that sooner.
Seamus,
I cried for you.
We all do.
Each of your surrogate children.
[Hopeful orchestral music]
Savanna: (Voiceover) Seamus,
it's because of you that I was
able to learn something valuable...
How to truly enjoy the moment.
Thank you, Seamus, for showing me
that I don't have to be born into a family.
I can make one.
Seamus,
I will never forget you.
It's funny what perspective brings.

ready to end it all.
I was suffocating in silence.
Alone.
My life changed when
one person took notice.
How can I not help someone else?
