The Abigail Broukes Mysteries (2023) Movie Script
And it
was her upstairs neighbors front
door camera that picked up the scream
when their takeout
food was delivered,
giving investigators what they needed
to nail down the time of the attack.
11:03 p.m.
Who was in the
building at that time?
And what did they stand to gain?
Tune in next week
with me, Abby Brooks,
as we inch closer to figuring out who
was behind the attack on Johnna Benson.
Only on what happened
here last night.
Who reads this stuff
when they move out?
Okay, worry about that later.
You are more loved than you
could ever know, Papa.
The Lord himself goes before you and
will be with you to the right of me.
Chapter thirty one, verse eight.
Hey, Miss Weston.
Good morning.
Oh, good morning, Abby.
This is a beautiful day.
Oh. Oh.
Hmm. I really need a new pair of
Gardening gloves.
My favorite ones are
back ordered. Mm.
Oh. So, how are you settling in?
You must be pretty much unpacked
by now. Yeah.
Yeah, it's coming along.
I still can't believe
I actually live here.
Oh, I remember how much you love
that Bancroft estate
when you were just
a little girl.
Your favorite place
to trick or treat.
Well, your house always
gave out better candy.
Nobody has time for those
fun size candy bars.
It is so good
to have you back
around here, darling.
And your papa.
I am sure that he is thrilled.
You see, it is a special
thing getting to live
close to your flesh and blood.
I thank God for bringing
you back to Prescott.
Oh,
I've got something for you.
Yeah,
just in case.
And I've also got a box of clothes to
donate to the church's clothing drive.
Now, would you mind?
Rented it up to your papa
when you see him next?
Of course. All right.
Well, I'm going to get
back and feed these girls.
And Henrietta has laid a few
eggs in case you want to few.
Oh, I'm okay. Thank
you, Miss Weston.
Oh, and.
I have got a lamp for you.
It's beautiful.
I'll drop it on your porch.
Okay. Thank you.
You have a good day.
You as well.
Good morning, Abby.
Morning, Penny.
So I heard the news.
You okay?
Marie Seems great.
Exactly, the kind of
wife Ross, deserves.
Is not really how you feel.
I don't know. I don't
know how I feel.
The whole thing is weird.
It's like we were together
a third of my life.
Abby, what happened
wasn't your fault.
Logically, I know
that. But emotionally,
I feel like my body didn't do the
one thing it was supposed to do.
One in four pregnancies
end that way.
I know, but why did the
one have to be mine?
I don't know sis.
Hey, I'm going to hear Papa
preach this weekend.
There's like, four services.
I can go any time that works
for you if you want to come
Oh, this weekend I'm really
busy, you know, at the house.
I would really love to see you.
I'm going to see him eventually.
Just when things slow
down a little bit.
You want to get a coffee?
My treat.
I'd love to, but I told Meg I'd help
her make cookies for the bake sale.
Oh, fun.
But maybe I could
set up a dinner.
You, me and Papa.
We haven't all been together as
a family in far too long.
Yeah. Yeah, I'd like that.
Okay, cool.
Love you.
Love you
Hi, this is Abby Brooks.
I host the What happened
Here Last Night podcast.
I'm calling for
Hannah Waterhouse.
She's on another call.
Can I ever call you back?
Of course.
Oh, do you happen to know if
[Phone Hangs Up]
Okay
Hi. Can I get an
oatmilk latte, please?
Lightly sweetened.
Thank you.
Hey, good morning.
I will just do a
drip coffee, please.
Black.
Thank you.
Mm hmm.
I ordered an oatmilk latte,
lightly sweetened.
Oh, I think that was mine.
Matt.
Abby. Hi! Hey!
Good to see you. I know.
I think I just took
a huge gulp of your coffee.
Yeah, No, I think you did, too.
Sorry. Can I get you another one?
No, no, no, no.
Don't worry about.
It's not like we didn't share a
million juice boxes when we were kids.
Right?
I heard you were back in town.
You bought the old Bancroft
estate. Mhmm
A beautiful place and somebody's
dream home.
If I'm not mistaken.
Find any secret passageways yet?
Oh, I think those are
just silly rumors.
Were they?
I remember you begged me
to go to that historic
tour of homes with you,
and we were, what, like 14? Yes.
I owe you a thank you for that.
It made me feel comfortable
buying it without seeing it again.
Even if it did come with a bunch
of stuff from the previous tenant,
I'm actually surprised
that I got it.
A realtor said there was multiple offers
because it hadn't sold since it was built.
Well, I'm glad
that I could help.
How's your husband
like Prescott?
She's not my
husband anymore. Oh.
I'm sorry to hear
that. It's okay.
It's for the best.
Hey, I think it's really cool.
You ended up an
investigative reporter.
True crime podcaster.
Basically like a grown up spy.
Says the real life cop.
All those spy games we played when we
were kids must have rubbed off on us.
Only a little.
[Police Chatter on Radio]
Hey, I got to get back to work.
But I'm sure I've seen
you around. Right.
That is highly likely.
And let me know if you find any
bookshelves that open into secret rooms.
Not as likely.
Miss Weston
Miss Weston
Are you home?
[Gasps]
[Police Sirens]
Hey!
Hey.
What's going on?
Sorry.
Not exactly the
welcome to the neighborhood
Prescott likes to give.
Miss Weston?
Is she okay?
Penny, She found Miss Weston.
She uhh...
Is that?
She was fine a
couple of hours ago.
I spoke to her this morning.
Yeah? Yeah.
Likely heart attack.
I can't believe this.
It's very unexpected.
Look, you should.
You should get home.
We got to finish up here.
I'm really sorry
for your loss, Abby.
Matt!
Matt!
Officer MacAdams.
She didn't have
gardening gloves. What?
Miss Weston.
She didn't have gardening gloves.
She told me this morning.
So what is this doing in front
of her house?
Abby...
Someone's been in our house.
That planter. It's
been knocked over.
What?
See, it's facing
the wrong direction.
Someone went into her house.
That might be a bit of a stretch, don't
you think? Miss Weston could have done it.
This glove, this.
This is evidence.
That Miss Weston
liked gardening?
I already told you she
didn't have gardening gloves.
Whoever dropped it knocked over that
planter, went into her house and.
And what?
And killed Miss Weston?
What's the motive?
Though, if it was a murder,
which I'm not saying it is, well,
what would someone have to gain by killing
an elderly woman that everyone loved?
I don't know...
yet, but that's why we need to look into it.
Please, Matt.
Miss Weston was my friend and
I bet if you search her house,
you will not find a shoe
matching that print.
Okay.
Yeah, fine.
I'll have it photographed and
bagged as potential evidence,
and then I will look into it.
And I mean me.
I will look into it.
I know how your brain works.
Promise me you're not going to do any
weird investigative journalist stuff.
I don't know what
you're talking about.
Abby, leave the investigation
up to the professionals.
I mean. Technically,
I am a professional.
You know what I mean?
Do I though?
I will let you know
when I have something.
And I will circle back.
If I don't hear from you.
I'm sure you will.
Marion Weston,
sole heir to the Weston Railway
Fortune is building.
Two estates in Prescott with her
recently inherited
fortune worth $23 million.
There's your motive.
Marion Weston in front of the Bancroft estate
built by Weston, named after her grandfather,
Bancroft Weston was the last project
finished before she shut down her operation.
I wonder why she never told me
that she built my house
Hi, my name is Abby Brookes,
and I was wondering
if it would be possible to get
ownership history records on my home.
You can fill out the online form
and provide proof of residence
to have those records sent to you
from the county clerk's office.
Would it be faster if
I did it in person?
Unfortunately, no.
Each form has a series of approvals.
Right.
Thank you.
Thank you so much
for being here.
I really appreciate it.
Thank you.
This doesn't feel real.
No it doesn't.
Thank you all for coming tonight
to celebrate the life
of our beloved neighbor and
friend, Marion Weston.
She meant so much
to so many people in Prescott.
She was loving and kind
and one of the most generous
people I've ever known.
She touched this community
in so many ways,
and I will miss her wonderful banana bread
that she made every Sunday without fail.
And while she will
be greatly missed
and honored that we are
joined by her son, Theo,
and daughter in law Cami.
Did you know Miss Weston had a
son? No
And we.
The Prescott community,
will welcome them with open arms.
Did you want to say anything?
I didn't really know my brother.
We had
We had recently reconnected.
But I can tell
through her letters
that she was an
incredible person
and getting to meet you all
and see how much you loved her.
It confirms that for me.
I think I forgot
to turn off my curling iron.
So I'm going to be right back.
Wait, what?
Abby!
Sir!
Wait, Sir. Sir.
Interesting.
Playing spy again?
[Laughter]
Okay.
That was weird, right?
Do you want a glass?
What was weird was
you hiding in the bushes,
spying on your neighbors.
No, I mean the Bible verse and the knocked
over planter and the long lost son.
And the fact that she gave me a
lamp, and the verse was about a lamp.
I don't know, Abby.
Just promise me you won't go
pointing fingers at anyone
without proof.
- I'll see you tomorrow.
- See you tomorrow.
- I love you.
- Love you.
Ephesians.
It's a clue.
Why else would
she have given me the lamp? Hmm?
She wanted me to find
this business card.
That looks like trash.
One man's trash is
another woman's clue.
Maybe she just thought
you would like it.
Maybe. Or it means something.
She had a framed
verse about a lamp.
Look at the frame.
Look at the lamp.
Maybe her Bible study
was looking through Psalms.
I thought the same thing.
So I checked the
church's website.
They're working through
Ephesians, not Psalms.
Miss Weston wanted me to find this
Bible verse, this business card.
I say we search her house.
We? No no no no no
We are not kids playing spies.
Abby, this is not
a game. I know.
Do you? Yes.
Matt, please.
There's something going on here.
What's the motive?
Miss Westons fortune.
I didn't know Miss
Weston had a fortune.
A few searches on genealogy
sites confirmed it.
Miss Weston was the sole heir
to the Weston Railway fortune.
When her father passed away,
He left her everything.
Over $23 million.
Need more motive than that?
Okay.
What makes you believe
there's something in the house?
The verse. The two
matching lamps.
If I can just figure out
what this business card is for,
we'll have a lead.
Well, you can't just bring into
someone else's house.
What if I told you that I had a
key and written permission?
I would say, What
do you need me for?
Well, I don't,
but it would be nice
to have somebody on the outside.
And you always were
the better spy.
Fine.
But we are not partners, Abby.
I am doing this as a friend.
Do not get too excited.
- I'm not. - I'm serious.
- I'm not.
I got to get out of here.
Where are you off to?
Church, I'm going to go to the
late service. Want to join me?
Oh, no. I have a
big meeting thing.
Suit yourself.
I'll see you around, Brooks.
See you later, MacAdams.
That's Officer MacAdams to you.
Of course.
Relationships.
We all have them.
Relationships
with our spouse, with our kids,
with our family, with our
friends, with our neighbor.
And that's what God is
looking for from you too.
If you look through the books
of the Bible, you'll see that
God created unique relationships
with each of the authors.
There's an intimacy, a safety, trust,
and God wants that with you, too,
for you to
really know Him,
for you to trust him
and his plan.
Abby.
Papa.
Oh it's so great
to see you, kiddo.
Oh, How's the house?
It's. It's all right.
Oh, so sad to hear
about Miss Weston.
Yeah.
She was such a light
in this community.
She was a really
special woman. Mm hmm.
And you.
You are just as on fire for the
Lord as the day I left Prescott.
I say more so. Wow.
Can I ask you something?
Anything.
Psalm chapter
119, verse 105.
Your word is a
lamp to my feet and
A light to my path.
Yes. Mm hmm.
What does this verse
mean in context?
Well,
there are lots of references
to the word of God illuminating
the way for those who
are lost or stumbling.
Like Psalm chapter eighteen, verse twenty
eight, "" for thou wilt light my candle.
The Lord, My God will
enlighten my darkness. ""
They remind you that in darkness,
seeking out the light of the Lord
will guide you to your next
great step, if you will.
And if you don't
know where to start.
Prayer is always a good place.
Why do you ask?
I was just curious.
You should know.
And I'll see you
soon, though. Yes.
Self mentioned dinner. Yes.
I'd love it.
[Unintelligible Arguing]
Hi!
Hi..
What are you doing?
I dropped my keys
and can't seem to find them.
Do you want some help?
Sure. Thanks.
I'm Abby, by the way.
I'm your mother's...
I guess now, your neighbor.
It's not mine yet.
We're still dealing
with logistics.
It's a beautiful house.
Your mother did a great job
maintaining it.
Yeah,
it's a bit much for me.
For us.
She loved her flowers
and the chicken coop out back.
She had a name for
each one of them.
I can't seem to get
that thing open.
There's a slot to feed them,
but the door to the coop is locked.
And then the key
seems to be missing.
So you're from.
Avondale. It's
about an hour out.
I'll head back in the morning.
What do you do there?
I'm an accountant.
Why? Just getting
to know my neighbor.
So cool that you and Miss Weston
reconnected after all these years.
You know, I think
that I'm going to..
Found them!
Thanks.
Of course. Happy to help.
See you around.
I know
listenership is down a bit this
season, but I have a great.
Let me stop you
right there, Abby.
I'm going to be frank.
Your first season was a hit.
One of the best shows on this
podcasting network to date.
However, you have not been able to
replicate that success this season.
Which is why I say
we should. Pivot.
We have a new case we
want to assign you.
Missing girl upstate
looks like another slam dunk of
something you can easily solve on air.
What does that mean?
It's just a more solvable case.
Usual cast of suspects.
Plus, we've been
talking to the sheriff
and she said she will give you the
inside scoop up close interviews.
Or we could do something
a little closer to home.
A case I've been investigating
with a local cop.
I'm listening.
My neighbor was found dead in
her home a couple of days ago.
They said it was from natural
causes, but I'm not so sure.
Her planter by the front
door had been knocked over.
There was a gardening
glove in her yard.
She gave me this
business card in a lamp.
And the other night,
during her vigil,
there was literally a dark
figure stalking her house.
I'll tell you what.
I'll give you a week to come
up with something compelling.
Suspects, motive, opportunity.
Prove this was a murder.
If you can't, we're going to go
with the missing girl case upstate.
Okay.
Deal.
[ABBY VOICEOVER] My neighbor, Miss Weston,
was recently found dead in her Prescott home.
And while most believe it was
a death by natural causes,
I think there's
more to the story.
With the help of my old friend,
a local Prescott cop,
I'll be looking into her death
to see if I can find out what
really happened to Marion Weston.
I can't believe I'm
going to say this,
but it's go time.
Okay.
I'm in.
You know, I could
get fired for this.
You're not doing anything wrong.
You were sitting in your car
talking to your friend
What do you know about the long
lost son, Theo?
Not much. Accountant
in Avondale.
Life seems nice.
I haven't really had the chance
to meet her yet.
So you never left Prescott?
No.
I don't know.
I thought about it.
It just never happened.
Why not?
Never really had a reason to.
I've got everything I need here.
My parents are here.
I got a good job here.
Bought a condo, got a goldfish,
got everything I need.
You find what you're
looking for in the city.
I don't know what
I am looking for.
Then what are we
doing right now?
No, I know what I'm doing here.
I just don't know what I'm
doing out there.
I feel like
I don't really have a playbook.
Oh. What?
Have you bought the mission?
What? Why?
Abby.
Abby, Theo's cars pulling out
of the driveway right now.
Oh!
Abby!
Abby, get out now!
Abby.
Abby.
Abby.
Mr. Weston.
Morning. What can I
do for you, officer?
I just wanted to check in and make
sure Prescott was treating you well.
I'm in a bit of a
hurry. Of course.
Yeah, I know.
Also wanted to see
if you had seen a stray cat.
The neighbor next door.
She's got quite a few of them.
Looks like a little lost cat farm.
She had a lot of them.
So orange one that is missing.
Goes by Remy.
She's actually really
worried about him.
He gets away, and I'm just.
I'm checking around
the area to see.
I just.
She hadn't seen him.
I told her I'd knock, make some rounds.
So you say you haven't seen him,
and I guess you
haven't seen him.
Stray cat.
That was the best you
could come up with.
Look, that was too close, Abby.
You're a cop.
I panicked.
He, he could have found you.
Yeah, but he didn't.
But he could have.
But he didn't.
And we found another clue.
Psalm Chapter twenty
three, verse five
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil
and my cup overflows
Miss Weston is
leading us somewhere.
Or she has a penchant for
keeping the word of God close.
I doubt it.
What are the odds
that she gives me a lamp?
And then the next clue
is hidden in a matching lamp?
If it is a clue,
slim, I will give you that.
Wait a minute.
Table oil cup.
Kitchen. Mrs. Weston's kitchen.
We need to search
Ms. Weston's kitchen.
I think you need to stay away
from the house for a little while.
At least until we can
learn a little more.
Some more about what?
I'm serious, Abby.
I don't want you getting
yourself wrapped up
in something that
you can't untangle.
I'll be careful.
I promise.
Sorry.
I got to go.
Let me know if
you need anything?
Anything? Yeah.
I like having you back, Brooks.
I like being back.
Car twenty two.
I'm in route.
Cammie. Hi.
It's Abby, right?
Yes. You're back from
Avondale already?
Oh, Theo told me, right?
Yeah, it was just a quick trip.
Just have some work
stuff to take care of.
Right, of course.
Well, I hope you guys get time
to explore Prescott.
It's such a cool place.
Are you planning on
staying? I don't know.
It's Theo he...
Yes. I can't imagine what
you guys are going through.
If you need anything,
I'm just up the way.
Thanks.
Of course.
And Theo is he..?
Oh, he's.
Let's go now.
It was really nice to
officially meet you, Abby.
Nice to meet you, too.
Have a good night.
[Unintelligible Arguing]
[Unintelligible Arguing]
Hey, Matt.
You might want to come down here
and do a wellness check on Cami.
So everybody's good here.
If you need anything,
give us a call.
Have a good night.
Let's go
Are they gone for the night?
Yeah, they said they're
heading back to Avondale.
I'm going back in.
No, I don't think
that's a good idea.
I'll be quick.
I have to figure
out what Miss Weston
wanted me to find before
someone else finds it first.
Any luck?
Nope.
Well, thanks for
walking me home.
I'm just doing my civic duty.
I should probably get
back to the station.
Right.
Yes, of course.
I'll see you at church
again this weekend?
Kind of like going home, right?
Call me if anything comes up.
I will.
Okay
Have a goodnight.
Goodnight.
What did you want me
to find, Miss Weston?
Hi!
Thank you, Parker.
And great job on the math test.
Your studying is
really paying off.
Whoa, you're almost sold out.
What can I say?
Sunflowers make people generous.
Oh, you're being modest.
What's your secret?
Promise not to tell.
Scout's honor.
Sunflower butter gives the
cookies a nuttier flavor
and makes them richer.
Here.
Oh, oh okay.
It's on the house.
Thank you.
Hey, Abby.
This is Zeke.
His classroom is
right next to mine.
Zeke, meet my sister, Abby.
It is so nice to meet you!
You as well.
I've heard quite
a lot about you.
Ah, good things I hope?
Well, I can say for a fact
that your sister's really happy
that you're back in Prescott
Happy to be back.
Well, I better get back
to making my rounds.
I don't want Principal Jones to
think I'm sleeping on the job.
Nice to meet you.
Thank you for the cookie.
You're welcome
He's cute!
What?
No!
Ew
Are you going to buy a cookie
or are you just here to make me
as uncomfortable as possible?
What are sisters for?
Can I help you with something?
Actually, yes.
How well did you get to know Ms.
I'd say about as well as anyone
here did. Why?
Well, I got the unofficial green light
from my distributor to look into her death
as a potential next season.
How you manage that?
It's a long story.
Do you know of anybody who would be after
her fortune besides the long lost son?
I mean, her ex-boyfriend was
always a bit shady, in my opinion.
Miss Weston had an ex
- boyfriend. Oh, yeah.
He runs that mechanic shop right
off the alley on Main Street.
Do you know if she
was ever married?
Um. I don't.
But public records would show that.
You should check the library.
They might have old copies.
You're a genius, sis.
That's what they tell me.
Thank you.
All right.
One for the road.
Pleasure doing
business with you.
Thank you.
Hey, Penny.
Abby. Hi. What can
I help you with?
Do you know if Miss Weston was
ever married?
Not to my knowledge.
I did hear a rumor that there was a guy
shortly after she finished that house,
but he was long gone before
Theo was born, putting him up
for adoption was one of the hardest
things she ever did in her life.
Regretted it until her last day.
Well, why did she do it?
From what I heard, she said he deserved
a family with both a mother and a father.
And she got a lot of pressure
from her family
having a baby out
of wedlock and all.
The whole situation
was just so sad.
Well, she must have
been happy, right?
Reconnecting with him
after all these years.
I know she took an ad out in the
paper every weekend.
A regional one, writing to
him, trying to make contact.
I'm just glad it finally worked.
Excuse me, please.
Hey!
Wait!
Anything?
Nothing.
I need to go back
into the house.
The table, oil. cup, clue.
Abby...
There's someone else trying
to get into this house Matt.
And Miss Weston
gave me a key for a reason.
We need to stay ahead of
whoever else may be onto this.
Okay.
I can get a proper search
warrant in the morning.
We'll make sure that no stone
or knickknack is unturned.
Thank you.
Hey uh...
What are you doing tonight?
I was planning on
working on my podcast pitch.
Why? What's up?
I just
wanted to see if you wanted to
grab a bite to eat
at the usual spot.
Yeah, I've been here a million
times. It's never for dinner.
Oh, you're missing out.
Am I?
It's Fantastic
Thank you. Thank you.
You've never had the pizza here?
Mmh mmh
So you've heard of an everything
bagel, right?
Yeah. Okay,
so I call this the everything pizza.
Okay.
Each topping is paired with
this complimentary counterpart.
So you've got your meat lover section,
your Hawaiian section, barbecue chicken,
veggie lover.
That way you can kind of
get the best of all worlds.
- It's brilliant.
- Yeah.
Dive in.
- Cheers.
- Cheers.
What do you think?
It's amazing.
Ten out of ten
Who is that?
No one.
I've known you since
you were seven.
You're a terrible liar.
One of my better qualities.
Spill.
We uh, we started dating
right out of college.
She's a pediatric
nurse in Greenville.
Parents live up on Milton.
We were together for years.
I proposed and everything.
What happened?
Nothing.
A lot of things
that I don't know.
I could never be enough for her.
How is that possible?
You're charming and handsome.
You clearly have
great taste in pizza.
I mean, you're any
girl's dream guy.
You know?
Well, thank you for saying that.
You know, I'm
sorry that we kind of lost touch
It happens.
You know, life gets in the way.
Only if you let it.
Mmm...
I know what you mean... though.
I feel that way about Ross.
It's like
he should have been perfect.
But when I lost the baby.
It's like we couldn't pretend it
was okay anymore.
Abby, I'm.
I'm so sorry.
I didn't handle it well.
I threw myself into work.
I shut him out.
I took it out on everyone.
I'm not proud of who I was then.
I'm sure everyone understands.
Yeah, but that
doesn't make it okay.
Are you proud of who are now?
Uh, TBD.
Is that why you came back here?
I don't know why
I came back here.
It's like everything hit the fan,
and all I could think was get home.
- The lamp... guided you back?
- Yeah.
Something like that.
How do you do it?
Do what?
Keep your faith.
You're a cop, for goodness sake.
After everything you've seen day in
and day out, how do you still believe?
I'd be lying if I
said it was easy.
My faith has been tested
more times than I can count.
You familiar with Mark
Chapter nine, verse twenty four?
I believe
help my unbelief.
it's about
knowing something that's true,
but having a hard time truly
believing it in your heart.
You can see it in front of you
with your own two eyes and
that verse I...
I use it as a prayer.
Help me with my unbelief in times
when I'm feeling disconnected.
Does it work?
You know, sometimes answering
prayers can take a while
and that can be challenging.
But I found that the Lord,
reveals himself to those who seek him.
I mean, that's nice in theory,
but I'm not sure that's how things
actually work in the real world.
I know from experience it is.
I know it's hard to
see right now, but
God has a plan for
you that's bigger than
you can even imagine.
Under a small vintage lamp
on the table in the corner,
I found the first clue,
and that led me to a second.
Another Bible verse
mentioning household items.
Psalm chapter 23, Verse five.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil.
My cup overflows.
Table. Oil. Cup.
Kitchen. Right?
But I searched the kitchen in Ms..Weston's
home and nothing. Back to square one.
Was Ms. Weston leading me somewhere,
or was all of this meaningless after all?
If I were Miss Weston,
what would that verse mean?
Table, oil.
Let's try this.
Dear God. Hi.
Sorry, it's been a while.
I don't want to start.
Have you had a chance
to review the samples yet?
I did.
And?
I'm not sure it's
totally working.
I agree with the cop character.
It just seems like this lady left
Bible verses around her house.
What about her fortune?
The lamp.
The business card.
I'm sorry, Abby.
There's just not enough there.
No!
Give me more time, please.
Something is going on.
I can feel it.
Fine.
A few more days.
But we need to finish this
Johnna Benson season strong.
I can't have it falling to the
wayside because you found something
shiny and entertaining.
Of course, all of the
reporting is done.
I just have to
report the episodes.
I want them in my inbox ASAP.
And with the
suspects narrowed down to the
building's maintenance team,
it was only a matter of time before
detectives would close in on them.
Hey sis!
What was the name of the mechanic shop
where you said Miss Weston's ex worked?
Hi!
Excuse me.
Can I help you?
Yes. I'm looking for...
Well, I don't know his name,
but he dated my friend.
Nico.
Someone here for you?
Oh, no he's not..
Hey, Nico.
Where are we at on the carburetor for Mrs.
Gale's truck?
It's on backorder, boss.
Excuse me.
[Sigh]
Excuse me.
One of the gentleman
will help you outside, ma'am.
Oh, I don't have car troubles.
What do you know
about Marion Weston?
I know that you two were.
I saw you the
night of the vigil.
Who are you?
I just want to ask
you a few questions.
- Get out of my shop.
- But... - Now!
Wait, he threatened you?
Well, it wasn't a threat, per
se, but was a little bit scary.
You okay?
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm okay.
But I do think we
need to look into him.
I saw a stack of past
due bills on the counter
and when I drove around to
other mechanics in the area,
they were doing double
the business Grey's was.
Plus, I found these.
You think you knew
about the fortune.
Based on his reaction?
I bet he does.
Abby Brooks.
Hello, Miss Brooks.
I'm calling to let you know that
the county clerk's office got back to me
with the history records of the house.
We'll be mailing the copy to you
this week.
Can you just tell me who owned
the home before I bought it?
They usually don't do
that over the phone.
Please. It's a bit
of an emergency.
It looks like the house was owned
by the Weston Railway Trust.
According to the reports,
there were various tenants.
But the house has been vacant
for the past few years.
Only had one owner,
Marion Weston.
Thank you.
Of course. Have
a good afternoon.
Matt,
If Miss Weston owned my house, that clue
might not have been about her kitchen
But about mine.
Have you guys been
in contact with
Miss Weston's estate attorney?
It's not usually
our department. Why?
Last time Theo was in town,
he mentioned something
about logistics.
I'll look into it.
What is this?
Oh, that was on Theo's key ring.
I'm sorry.
Any idea what it means?
Yeah.
This is the Freemont
Medical Conference.
Leah used to go every year.
The number four.
That's the day.
If you want other days,
there'd be other numbers.
Why would an accountant
go to a medical conference?
That's a good question.
So it looks like
their curriculum is
locked.
It's not available on the site.
I'll put in a request
when I get back to the station.
Are you finding anything?
Nothing.
We are coming up short again.
Sorry.
Another dead end.
[YOUNG ABBY VOICEOVER]
Dear God.
I want to start off
by saying thank you.
Thank you for my sister Sophia.
And for my papa.
I know my family
isn't traditional.
I love them.
I ask, Lord, that you help me
with my math test.
It is tomorrow,
and I'm so nervous.
What if I make mistakes?
Love, Abby.
I know a lot has happened.
And it's been a while
since we last spoke.
Since I spoke.
But I want to
thank you for taking such
good care of Papa and Sophia.
Their lives have
been really blessed,
and I can't thank you
enough for how happy
they are.
If I could have an an
ounce of what they have.
Yes, this is Officer MacAdams with
the Prescott Police Department.
I'm looking to obtain a copy of
the schedule of events for this
year's Fremont
Medical Conference.
Thank you.
So I'm kind of stuck,
and I have no idea what
Miss Weston meant by that verse.
When was the last time you read
the Book of Psalms?
I can confidently say
it's been a while.
[laughter]
You want to give
me the CliffsNotes?
Yeah.
That Psalm has themes of
assurance and care from God.
If a flock of sheep is guided
by a skilled shepherd,
they are protected and provided
for in the same way.
David praises God in this
Psalm for giving him peace.
There's a knowing that God
always protects and provides.
You know, there's nothing
you could ever do to make me
love you less.
I know change is scary,
but that doesn't
mean it's not good.
No, I mean, I need a drink.
No, that's only a
temporary relief.
I was kidding.
I got to go to work.
But please stop by any time
I love you kiddo.
I love you too.
[ROSS ON PHONE]
Hey.
Hi.
[ROSS ON PHONE]
I've been trying to reach you.
I know. I.
I'm sorry.
Things have just it's been...
[ROSS ON PHONE]
Yeah, I know
So, what's up?
[ROSS ON PHONE] It's kind of
silly, actually, but
[ROSS ON PHONE] did you happen to
grab my grandfather's cufflinks
[ROSS ON PHONE] when we
packed up the apartment?
[ROSS ON PHONE] They were in
your jewelry box last I remember.
Right, yeah.
I'm happy to check for them.
[ROSS ON PHONE]
Thank you.
[ROSS ON PHONE] I hate to ask but,
I want to wear them for the wedding.
[ROSS ON PHONE]
So thank you for checking.
Yeah, of course.
I'll check when I get home.
Talk to you later.
What did you find?
Nothing good.
Oh.
John Gray's got a rap sheet
longer than a drugstore receipt.
Guys that work for him.
Not any better. Are you going to
bring him in for questioning?
You have nothing
to question him on.
Well, maybe if you tell the chief
they might have to do an autopsy.
Theo didn't want one.
We have to try.
If you file a concerned
Citizens report,
we might be able
to do something.
My offer still stands.
You want to join me?
Well, hi.
Hey.
Good to see so many familiar
faces in the congregation today.
I know the Lord is pleased
with this attendance.
I want to start off today's sermon
with Hebrews chapter four, verse two.
For good news came to
us just as to them.
But the message they
heard did not benefit them
because they were not united
by faith with
those who listened.
For We who have believed entered
that rest,
just as God has said.
Table, Oil, Cup
As in my anger, I swore
they shall not enter my rest.
Though his works were finished
at the foundation of the world.
Nothing!
How much do you know about
Miss Westons last day?
Not a lot, why?
I think the clue was leading us
to Miss Weston's last supper.
If you will.
I'll see what I can find.
You guys are going
to get us in trouble.
Sorry!
Shall we pray?
Yes.
Dear Heavenly Father,
thank you for my two
beautiful granddaughters for this
time together and for this food.
Let it bless and
nourish our bodies.
In Jesus name, we pray.
Amen.
Amen.
Amen.
This looks amazing.
Couldn't have done
it without Soph!
Hey, you made the sauce.
True
Wait.
Is this...?
Nana's secret sauce?
Oh, you kept it.
Mm hmm.
I don't have a lot of memories of her,
but getting to cook with her recipes,
read her handwriting, it's,
I don't know...
special.
Having someone from the past
connected to you.
You remind me a lot of Cora.
You have her eyes, her spirit.
She never took no
for an answer either.
She would be very proud of the
women you two have grown up to be.
I know I am.
Oh, I am so thankful
you both are here.
Life's best journeys
lead you home.
What was that?
What? Zeke calling you?
Well, after school hours.
Oh, it's nothing.
Okay, fine.
He asked for my help planning
the school play this year.
He usually heads up the whole
thing, but I guess he's a bit
overworked and needs
an extra sort of hands.
Or he wants to
spend time with you.
You're going to do it?
I don't know.
You should totally
do it. Give me your phone.
Is that too much?
No. Okay.
You won't regret it.
He's excited for us
to work together.
So, do we start planning the
wedding now or do we do it later?
With the first clue
being so obvious,
and the second clue
seemingly being a dead end.
And we will pick this up later.
Hey.
According to her phone records and
the last address entered into her GPS,
Miss Weston's last
supper was at a soup kitchen.
Yeah.
Welcome.
Soup?
You're welcome.
- Hi. Can I help you?
- Hi. Yes, I'm Abby Brooks.
I called about Marian Weston.
Of course.
God rest her soul.
Came here the night
before she passed.
Gave us the biggest blessing
the Lord could give.
What do you mean?
This kitchen has been
around for decades.
But the past few years
it's been hard for us.
The night before she passed,
she gave us this baby.
May I?
Oh, go ahead.
Doesn't look like much but...
what was inside was exactly
what we needed more
than we needed.
Whoa.
That is a generous donation.
Proverbs chapter
twenty two, verse five.
Thorns and snares
are in the way of the crooked.
Whoever guards his soul
will keep far from them.
We're on the right track.
- Thank you.
- Oh. No, no.
You go ahead and
keep that, dear.
I believe the Lord speaks to us
through Scripture.
And he clearly guided
you to that verse.
Thank you.
Yeah, you're welcome.
Oh. Oh, I'm so sorry.
Thorns and snares.
Thorns and snares.
What has thorns and snares?
I want us to be really sure
before making any moves. Okay?
Of course.
I can't have anything
happening to you.
I will be careful.
- I promise.
- Okay.
[Radio Chatter]
Oh, I got to go. Sorry.
It's okay.
Okay. I'll see you later.
- Yeah, see you later.
- All right.
Thorns and snares,
thorns and snares.
And we have promising leads in
John Grey and Theo and...
I think we... we're
really on to something.
Look, Abby, the idea
has a unique angle
with a good hook,
but that's if it was a murder.
But there's no evidence of that.
Just some Bible verses.
That are leading me somewhere.
Do you have this week's episode
for the Johnna Benson case?
Yeah. I sent it to you.
No, you didn't.
Oh, Hannah, I'm so sorry.
I'm sending it now.
Abby, we cannot have you making
mistakes like this.
I know. I'm so sorry.
It won't happen again.
I can guarantee...
With listenership dipping
I need you to focus.
Drop the Weston story.
Finish the Benson story.
But, Hannah.
This is not up for discussion.
Finish out the season and we
will be in touch with next steps.
Are you firing me?
We're just exploring, taking the
show in a different direction.
This season's ratings are low.
They're low because the Benson
case isn't a real mystery.
It was basically already solved
before I started investigating it.
And the listeners know
that we need to give them what they want
which is us actually helping somebody.
And we could do that with
Miss Weston's case.
We have the opportunity
to make a real difference here.
Finish the season, Abby.
And then we consider this
partnership officially terminated.
Dear Lord, look,
I don't know how to do this
anymore, but I feel so lost.
Everything is
working with Matt
and seeing his faith
and the faith of
Miss Weston and
my grandfather's.
They, they trust you so much.
And I want that.
That relationship.
But I don't know where to start.
So... help me with my unbelief.
Our competition is back.
Hands where I can see them.
We kept our relationship
private because
it's a small town.
People talk.
But there was something
going on with her at the end.
She got cryptic
before she passed.
I just.
I just want to find
out what happened.
Come on, John.
I'll take you home.
Thorns and snares.
You were on to
something, John Grey.
Oof
What in the world
were you thinking?
Matt, I can explain!
No, there's nothing here, Abby.
You heard John Grey!
That guy has a rap
sheet a mile long.
He's not a reliable source.
But, what about the clues?
The verses!
No, it's not a clue!
It's just something left behind
by a senile old lady.
[CHIEF OF POLICE]
Matt, over here!
Stay here.
Chief.
Chief, I had every right
to think
every right to think that there
was something going on here
This is it.
What just happened?
I just got put on desk duty.
Matt, I...
And this is real life, Abby.
There are consequences!
No. I know!
There's nothing here.
- Matt, please.
- There is nothing here.
We're done.
No, but we're so
close. We are so close!
- We're done.
- But, Matt, please.
It's Officer MacAdams.
You've reached
Officer Matt MacAdams.
Sorry. Take your call.
Please leave me a message.
I'll get right back to you.
Hey, it's me again.
I just.
Call me back, please.
I really need to talk to you.
The podcast distributor pulled
the plug, so I'm out of a job.
And Matt, I mean,
he won't talk to me,
and I'm no closer to actually figuring
out what happened to Miss Weston.
I just.
I feel so lost.
You know, God gave
you these gifts, Abby.
Everything you're experiencing
is not a mistake.
When was the last
time you prayed?
Every time I do I
feel ridiculous?
Like I'm speaking into the void?
Like God's not listening?
No, he's always listening.
It sounds to me
like you need to slow down.
Give the Lord space
to speak to you.
The Lord himself goes
before you and will be with you.
He will never leave
you, nor forsake you.
Do not be afraid.
Do not be discouraged.
Oh uh, just a moment.
I'm sorry, that's
my two o'clock.
No, no.
The church will be empty
until choir practice tonight.
Just saying.
Thank you
[PHONE BUZZ]
Dear God...
I... I...
There, there dear.
Are you familiar
with Deuteronomy?
Chapter thirty one,
Verses eight. Nine.
The Lord himself goes before you
and He will be with you.
He will never leave you.
Nor forsake you.
Do not be afraid
and do not be discouraged.
You know, this is the first place I come
to and I feel lost or a bit off path.
It helps me to recenter
and the Lord never fails
to guide me in the
right direction.
That would really come
in handy right now.
Well, there's a
difference in our lives.
When we're following
our own self
verses following the
guidance of the Lord.
If there's something
on your heart,
something gnawing that you.
That's the Lord.
He's trying to tell you and
guide you in the right direction.
Don't ignore it dear.
If you forgive others
when they sin against you,
Your Heavenly
Father will also forgive you.
Matthew Chapter
six, verse fourteen.
You're really good at this,
aren't you God?
Hey, um..
Can you meet?
And I shouldn't have
taken it out on you.
I know that you were hurting
just as much as I was,
and I wish I could have gotten out
of my own way, out of my own grief
to love you through yours.
You did the best you could Abby.
I'll never fault you for that.
I'm just...
I'm so sorry for all of it.
I forgive you.
And I'm sorry for my
part in this, too.
I could have been kinder.
I could've shown more
grace. It's just...
I really wish I could
have been what you needed.
Even if we were perfect.
I don't think it would have
changed the outcome.
The grief, It allowed us to see the
cracks that were already there long before
we lost the baby.
I want you to be happy, Abby.
You deserve love
just as much as anyone else.
These are for you.
Thanks.
So, have you and
Mary set a date yet?
Oh, don't get me started.
I'm aware of that.
I'm doing the best
job that I can. No.
If I did it, then we
would already have it.
And we'd be done
with this already.
Penny, do you have a minute?
What's on your mind, Abby?
Do you know
what this business card is for?
Where on earth did you get this?
It was in a lamp.
I'd recognize this
logo anywhere.
This law firm.
Rebecca Gardner.
Terrible woman.
I never met her, but she scammed my
cousin Lucy out of thousands of dollars.
What? How?
She was in an accident.
A hit and run.
She's fine, thank goodness.
But her attorney,
Rebecca Gardner,
convinced her to settle out of
court. She did.
But she never received
the settlement money.
She tried to fight it,
but they had records.
Proof somehow that they paid my
cousin when they never did.
She tried to
sue, but didn't
have the resources.
They bled her dry.
Do you think Miss Weston was
working with Rebecca Gardner?
Oh, gosh.
I certainly hope not.
If so, that money
she was setting aside for Theo
is likely long gone.
So we'll put men's business
here, women's business
there, and all those pieces that
are a little worse for wear.
We'll put here to donate to that
company that reuses fabrics.
Great.
This is a ton of
donations, Papa.
Been collecting them
for over a year.
Job fairs next weekend.
And I want to make sure that everything
we need to help anyone in our community
better their working life include
a proper interview outfit.
I think that's really cool.
- Can I ask you guys something?
- Yeah.
Have you ever...
This is going to sound insane,
but have you ever been visited
by an angel?
Yeah, many times.
Really?
If you've been visited by one
that is a good thing.
They are messengers sent
from God to help you.
Well, helpful they were.
I met with Ross.
How'd it go?
Really well.
Yeah.
Let's just say the message from
God was loud and clear.
The chicken coop.
What?
I will be right back.
I am. I'm so sorry.
I'm so sorry,
Matt.
Look, I know you're
upset with me,
and I totally understand,
but I figured out what the last verse meant
I'm heading to Miss Watson's
house now!
[Abby Panicking]
[ABBY VOICE MESSAGE] I figured
out what the last verse meant.
[ABBY VOICE MESSAGE] I'm heading
to Miss Watson's house now.
[ABBY VOICE MAILBOX] Hi, you've reached
Abby Brooks. Please leave a message.
Hey, Carson...
Can you let the chief know I'm going to
do a well check at Miss Westons house?
[Abby Panicking]
Shhhh...
Shhhh...
[Abby Breathing Heavily]
Where is it?
Wha..What?
I know you know where it is.
A new will. Marian made one.
I found this letter in the coop.
I know you know where it is.
I don't know.
I don't know what
you're talking about.
Cami? Where's Cami?
What did you do to her?
Can you stop?
Stop,
stop.
She might let you live
if you let me know
where the will is.
Please, please,
please.
I don't want to
hurt anyone else.
What?
[Abby Gasps]
Rebecca...
I need that will Abby.
And I know you know where it is.
I am done playing games.
I will do whatever it takes.
Okay Becky, calm...
Let's calm down.
Police!
Hands up!
No, no, please.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Please, Please, No!
I'm so sorry.
I'm sorry.
Let me cut you free.
I'm not Theo.
No, but you are under arrest.
After years of searching.
Miss Weston finally made contact with
who she believed to be her real son.
They began corresponding via
letters, but one day,
Miss Weston noticed
something was off.
The handwriting had changed.
And when the writer claiming to
be Theo, asked
Miss Weston to send
the letters to a P.O.
Box and said of the address,
Miss Weston started
to have her doubts.
She mailed the next letter to
his address but got no response.
So she tried the P.O. box and communication
resumed, but she knew something wasn't right.
She also had her doubts about
her estate attorney,
Rebecca Gardner.
She filed a complaint
against Rebecca
after reviewing her financial statements
where she found some discrepancies.
Which led to an investigation that
ultimately shut down her firm.
Rebecca knew about
Miss Weston's communication with her
biological son and about her millions.
So she set up a plan.
Intercept the letters.
And since they had never met in
person, find a fake Theo and get rid of
Miss Weston, to
steal her fortune.
She blackmail her ex-boyfriend,
a doctor with a bit of a shady past
into using his medical background
and posing as fake Theo.
To get rid of Miss Weston so they could
claim the money she set aside for her son.
And if he helped her,
they'd split the fortune.
Or so Rebecca told him.
Miss Weston was communicating
with the fake Theo for months.
She had her doubts, so she tried to
contact Theo using the old address.
But they were
intercepted by Rebecca.
She'd shared this information
with John Grey.
He was doing what he could to help her,
even if he didn't know all of the details.
And she wanted to
return the favor.
Miss Weston was suspicious.
So she hid the whereabouts of her
fortune in a place no one would find it.
Even her crooked estate manager.
In her first home in Prescott.
Along with the addresses for who
she believed to be her real son.
And set me up with everything.
I would need to
track it all down.
If I had a little faith.
Your drive up was okay?
You guys didn't
hit any traffic or anything?
Thank you guys for being here.
This is so exciting.
Guys!
This is Theo, the real Theo.
How nice to meet you, son.
Welcome to Prescott.
You sure it's the
right one this time?
You and I both know
you saw the DNA test.
Hey, I'm sorry for doubting you.
Oh, it's okay.
I truly doubted myself.
What got you back on track?
Well, let's just say I
got a not so subtle hint.
You know, now that you'll likely
have some free time on your hands,
What do you say about dinner?
I know a great pizza spot.
Only if you promise me
that we get one of every topping
in the correct grouping.
Deal
[Phone Buzzing]
Oh. Oh.
Take that.
- Sorry. - No. - I'll be quick.
- Take it. Go ahead go.
Real quick.
Hannah. Hi.
I just read an article
on the Weston case.
You were right.
I should have trusted your gut.
Listen, I think.
We were a bit rash
in removing you from the lineup.
We'd love to have you.
Actually Hannah I...
I want my own show.
One that I'm in charge of.
One about faith?
About how it leads people to do
incredible things, have incredible
breakthroughs,
and maybe even solve a mystery.
Or two.
I love it.
It's a great way to reach a niche
market with a solid hook that I think
you would be perfect for.
I also loved Officer
MacAdams insights.
He had a great voice
and you two had chemistry.
He'd be a great recurring guest.
What do you think?
I think I can pull some strings
to make that happen.
Wonderful I'd love to
help with distribution.
Let's find a time
to talk Monday.
Sounds good.
Good news.
The best.
I wanted to do
that for a decade.

And to those who know your name.
Put their trust in you.
For you.
Oh, Lord.
Have not forsaken
those who seek you.
Psalm chapter nine, verse ten.
Thank you, Lord, for
all the guidance.
Keep it up, please.
I need it.
Music Continues
was her upstairs neighbors front
door camera that picked up the scream
when their takeout
food was delivered,
giving investigators what they needed
to nail down the time of the attack.
11:03 p.m.
Who was in the
building at that time?
And what did they stand to gain?
Tune in next week
with me, Abby Brooks,
as we inch closer to figuring out who
was behind the attack on Johnna Benson.
Only on what happened
here last night.
Who reads this stuff
when they move out?
Okay, worry about that later.
You are more loved than you
could ever know, Papa.
The Lord himself goes before you and
will be with you to the right of me.
Chapter thirty one, verse eight.
Hey, Miss Weston.
Good morning.
Oh, good morning, Abby.
This is a beautiful day.
Oh. Oh.
Hmm. I really need a new pair of
Gardening gloves.
My favorite ones are
back ordered. Mm.
Oh. So, how are you settling in?
You must be pretty much unpacked
by now. Yeah.
Yeah, it's coming along.
I still can't believe
I actually live here.
Oh, I remember how much you love
that Bancroft estate
when you were just
a little girl.
Your favorite place
to trick or treat.
Well, your house always
gave out better candy.
Nobody has time for those
fun size candy bars.
It is so good
to have you back
around here, darling.
And your papa.
I am sure that he is thrilled.
You see, it is a special
thing getting to live
close to your flesh and blood.
I thank God for bringing
you back to Prescott.
Oh,
I've got something for you.
Yeah,
just in case.
And I've also got a box of clothes to
donate to the church's clothing drive.
Now, would you mind?
Rented it up to your papa
when you see him next?
Of course. All right.
Well, I'm going to get
back and feed these girls.
And Henrietta has laid a few
eggs in case you want to few.
Oh, I'm okay. Thank
you, Miss Weston.
Oh, and.
I have got a lamp for you.
It's beautiful.
I'll drop it on your porch.
Okay. Thank you.
You have a good day.
You as well.
Good morning, Abby.
Morning, Penny.
So I heard the news.
You okay?
Marie Seems great.
Exactly, the kind of
wife Ross, deserves.
Is not really how you feel.
I don't know. I don't
know how I feel.
The whole thing is weird.
It's like we were together
a third of my life.
Abby, what happened
wasn't your fault.
Logically, I know
that. But emotionally,
I feel like my body didn't do the
one thing it was supposed to do.
One in four pregnancies
end that way.
I know, but why did the
one have to be mine?
I don't know sis.
Hey, I'm going to hear Papa
preach this weekend.
There's like, four services.
I can go any time that works
for you if you want to come
Oh, this weekend I'm really
busy, you know, at the house.
I would really love to see you.
I'm going to see him eventually.
Just when things slow
down a little bit.
You want to get a coffee?
My treat.
I'd love to, but I told Meg I'd help
her make cookies for the bake sale.
Oh, fun.
But maybe I could
set up a dinner.
You, me and Papa.
We haven't all been together as
a family in far too long.
Yeah. Yeah, I'd like that.
Okay, cool.
Love you.
Love you
Hi, this is Abby Brooks.
I host the What happened
Here Last Night podcast.
I'm calling for
Hannah Waterhouse.
She's on another call.
Can I ever call you back?
Of course.
Oh, do you happen to know if
[Phone Hangs Up]
Okay
Hi. Can I get an
oatmilk latte, please?
Lightly sweetened.
Thank you.
Hey, good morning.
I will just do a
drip coffee, please.
Black.
Thank you.
Mm hmm.
I ordered an oatmilk latte,
lightly sweetened.
Oh, I think that was mine.
Matt.
Abby. Hi! Hey!
Good to see you. I know.
I think I just took
a huge gulp of your coffee.
Yeah, No, I think you did, too.
Sorry. Can I get you another one?
No, no, no, no.
Don't worry about.
It's not like we didn't share a
million juice boxes when we were kids.
Right?
I heard you were back in town.
You bought the old Bancroft
estate. Mhmm
A beautiful place and somebody's
dream home.
If I'm not mistaken.
Find any secret passageways yet?
Oh, I think those are
just silly rumors.
Were they?
I remember you begged me
to go to that historic
tour of homes with you,
and we were, what, like 14? Yes.
I owe you a thank you for that.
It made me feel comfortable
buying it without seeing it again.
Even if it did come with a bunch
of stuff from the previous tenant,
I'm actually surprised
that I got it.
A realtor said there was multiple offers
because it hadn't sold since it was built.
Well, I'm glad
that I could help.
How's your husband
like Prescott?
She's not my
husband anymore. Oh.
I'm sorry to hear
that. It's okay.
It's for the best.
Hey, I think it's really cool.
You ended up an
investigative reporter.
True crime podcaster.
Basically like a grown up spy.
Says the real life cop.
All those spy games we played when we
were kids must have rubbed off on us.
Only a little.
[Police Chatter on Radio]
Hey, I got to get back to work.
But I'm sure I've seen
you around. Right.
That is highly likely.
And let me know if you find any
bookshelves that open into secret rooms.
Not as likely.
Miss Weston
Miss Weston
Are you home?
[Gasps]
[Police Sirens]
Hey!
Hey.
What's going on?
Sorry.
Not exactly the
welcome to the neighborhood
Prescott likes to give.
Miss Weston?
Is she okay?
Penny, She found Miss Weston.
She uhh...
Is that?
She was fine a
couple of hours ago.
I spoke to her this morning.
Yeah? Yeah.
Likely heart attack.
I can't believe this.
It's very unexpected.
Look, you should.
You should get home.
We got to finish up here.
I'm really sorry
for your loss, Abby.
Matt!
Matt!
Officer MacAdams.
She didn't have
gardening gloves. What?
Miss Weston.
She didn't have gardening gloves.
She told me this morning.
So what is this doing in front
of her house?
Abby...
Someone's been in our house.
That planter. It's
been knocked over.
What?
See, it's facing
the wrong direction.
Someone went into her house.
That might be a bit of a stretch, don't
you think? Miss Weston could have done it.
This glove, this.
This is evidence.
That Miss Weston
liked gardening?
I already told you she
didn't have gardening gloves.
Whoever dropped it knocked over that
planter, went into her house and.
And what?
And killed Miss Weston?
What's the motive?
Though, if it was a murder,
which I'm not saying it is, well,
what would someone have to gain by killing
an elderly woman that everyone loved?
I don't know...
yet, but that's why we need to look into it.
Please, Matt.
Miss Weston was my friend and
I bet if you search her house,
you will not find a shoe
matching that print.
Okay.
Yeah, fine.
I'll have it photographed and
bagged as potential evidence,
and then I will look into it.
And I mean me.
I will look into it.
I know how your brain works.
Promise me you're not going to do any
weird investigative journalist stuff.
I don't know what
you're talking about.
Abby, leave the investigation
up to the professionals.
I mean. Technically,
I am a professional.
You know what I mean?
Do I though?
I will let you know
when I have something.
And I will circle back.
If I don't hear from you.
I'm sure you will.
Marion Weston,
sole heir to the Weston Railway
Fortune is building.
Two estates in Prescott with her
recently inherited
fortune worth $23 million.
There's your motive.
Marion Weston in front of the Bancroft estate
built by Weston, named after her grandfather,
Bancroft Weston was the last project
finished before she shut down her operation.
I wonder why she never told me
that she built my house
Hi, my name is Abby Brookes,
and I was wondering
if it would be possible to get
ownership history records on my home.
You can fill out the online form
and provide proof of residence
to have those records sent to you
from the county clerk's office.
Would it be faster if
I did it in person?
Unfortunately, no.
Each form has a series of approvals.
Right.
Thank you.
Thank you so much
for being here.
I really appreciate it.
Thank you.
This doesn't feel real.
No it doesn't.
Thank you all for coming tonight
to celebrate the life
of our beloved neighbor and
friend, Marion Weston.
She meant so much
to so many people in Prescott.
She was loving and kind
and one of the most generous
people I've ever known.
She touched this community
in so many ways,
and I will miss her wonderful banana bread
that she made every Sunday without fail.
And while she will
be greatly missed
and honored that we are
joined by her son, Theo,
and daughter in law Cami.
Did you know Miss Weston had a
son? No
And we.
The Prescott community,
will welcome them with open arms.
Did you want to say anything?
I didn't really know my brother.
We had
We had recently reconnected.
But I can tell
through her letters
that she was an
incredible person
and getting to meet you all
and see how much you loved her.
It confirms that for me.
I think I forgot
to turn off my curling iron.
So I'm going to be right back.
Wait, what?
Abby!
Sir!
Wait, Sir. Sir.
Interesting.
Playing spy again?
[Laughter]
Okay.
That was weird, right?
Do you want a glass?
What was weird was
you hiding in the bushes,
spying on your neighbors.
No, I mean the Bible verse and the knocked
over planter and the long lost son.
And the fact that she gave me a
lamp, and the verse was about a lamp.
I don't know, Abby.
Just promise me you won't go
pointing fingers at anyone
without proof.
- I'll see you tomorrow.
- See you tomorrow.
- I love you.
- Love you.
Ephesians.
It's a clue.
Why else would
she have given me the lamp? Hmm?
She wanted me to find
this business card.
That looks like trash.
One man's trash is
another woman's clue.
Maybe she just thought
you would like it.
Maybe. Or it means something.
She had a framed
verse about a lamp.
Look at the frame.
Look at the lamp.
Maybe her Bible study
was looking through Psalms.
I thought the same thing.
So I checked the
church's website.
They're working through
Ephesians, not Psalms.
Miss Weston wanted me to find this
Bible verse, this business card.
I say we search her house.
We? No no no no no
We are not kids playing spies.
Abby, this is not
a game. I know.
Do you? Yes.
Matt, please.
There's something going on here.
What's the motive?
Miss Westons fortune.
I didn't know Miss
Weston had a fortune.
A few searches on genealogy
sites confirmed it.
Miss Weston was the sole heir
to the Weston Railway fortune.
When her father passed away,
He left her everything.
Over $23 million.
Need more motive than that?
Okay.
What makes you believe
there's something in the house?
The verse. The two
matching lamps.
If I can just figure out
what this business card is for,
we'll have a lead.
Well, you can't just bring into
someone else's house.
What if I told you that I had a
key and written permission?
I would say, What
do you need me for?
Well, I don't,
but it would be nice
to have somebody on the outside.
And you always were
the better spy.
Fine.
But we are not partners, Abby.
I am doing this as a friend.
Do not get too excited.
- I'm not. - I'm serious.
- I'm not.
I got to get out of here.
Where are you off to?
Church, I'm going to go to the
late service. Want to join me?
Oh, no. I have a
big meeting thing.
Suit yourself.
I'll see you around, Brooks.
See you later, MacAdams.
That's Officer MacAdams to you.
Of course.
Relationships.
We all have them.
Relationships
with our spouse, with our kids,
with our family, with our
friends, with our neighbor.
And that's what God is
looking for from you too.
If you look through the books
of the Bible, you'll see that
God created unique relationships
with each of the authors.
There's an intimacy, a safety, trust,
and God wants that with you, too,
for you to
really know Him,
for you to trust him
and his plan.
Abby.
Papa.
Oh it's so great
to see you, kiddo.
Oh, How's the house?
It's. It's all right.
Oh, so sad to hear
about Miss Weston.
Yeah.
She was such a light
in this community.
She was a really
special woman. Mm hmm.
And you.
You are just as on fire for the
Lord as the day I left Prescott.
I say more so. Wow.
Can I ask you something?
Anything.
Psalm chapter
119, verse 105.
Your word is a
lamp to my feet and
A light to my path.
Yes. Mm hmm.
What does this verse
mean in context?
Well,
there are lots of references
to the word of God illuminating
the way for those who
are lost or stumbling.
Like Psalm chapter eighteen, verse twenty
eight, "" for thou wilt light my candle.
The Lord, My God will
enlighten my darkness. ""
They remind you that in darkness,
seeking out the light of the Lord
will guide you to your next
great step, if you will.
And if you don't
know where to start.
Prayer is always a good place.
Why do you ask?
I was just curious.
You should know.
And I'll see you
soon, though. Yes.
Self mentioned dinner. Yes.
I'd love it.
[Unintelligible Arguing]
Hi!
Hi..
What are you doing?
I dropped my keys
and can't seem to find them.
Do you want some help?
Sure. Thanks.
I'm Abby, by the way.
I'm your mother's...
I guess now, your neighbor.
It's not mine yet.
We're still dealing
with logistics.
It's a beautiful house.
Your mother did a great job
maintaining it.
Yeah,
it's a bit much for me.
For us.
She loved her flowers
and the chicken coop out back.
She had a name for
each one of them.
I can't seem to get
that thing open.
There's a slot to feed them,
but the door to the coop is locked.
And then the key
seems to be missing.
So you're from.
Avondale. It's
about an hour out.
I'll head back in the morning.
What do you do there?
I'm an accountant.
Why? Just getting
to know my neighbor.
So cool that you and Miss Weston
reconnected after all these years.
You know, I think
that I'm going to..
Found them!
Thanks.
Of course. Happy to help.
See you around.
I know
listenership is down a bit this
season, but I have a great.
Let me stop you
right there, Abby.
I'm going to be frank.
Your first season was a hit.
One of the best shows on this
podcasting network to date.
However, you have not been able to
replicate that success this season.
Which is why I say
we should. Pivot.
We have a new case we
want to assign you.
Missing girl upstate
looks like another slam dunk of
something you can easily solve on air.
What does that mean?
It's just a more solvable case.
Usual cast of suspects.
Plus, we've been
talking to the sheriff
and she said she will give you the
inside scoop up close interviews.
Or we could do something
a little closer to home.
A case I've been investigating
with a local cop.
I'm listening.
My neighbor was found dead in
her home a couple of days ago.
They said it was from natural
causes, but I'm not so sure.
Her planter by the front
door had been knocked over.
There was a gardening
glove in her yard.
She gave me this
business card in a lamp.
And the other night,
during her vigil,
there was literally a dark
figure stalking her house.
I'll tell you what.
I'll give you a week to come
up with something compelling.
Suspects, motive, opportunity.
Prove this was a murder.
If you can't, we're going to go
with the missing girl case upstate.
Okay.
Deal.
[ABBY VOICEOVER] My neighbor, Miss Weston,
was recently found dead in her Prescott home.
And while most believe it was
a death by natural causes,
I think there's
more to the story.
With the help of my old friend,
a local Prescott cop,
I'll be looking into her death
to see if I can find out what
really happened to Marion Weston.
I can't believe I'm
going to say this,
but it's go time.
Okay.
I'm in.
You know, I could
get fired for this.
You're not doing anything wrong.
You were sitting in your car
talking to your friend
What do you know about the long
lost son, Theo?
Not much. Accountant
in Avondale.
Life seems nice.
I haven't really had the chance
to meet her yet.
So you never left Prescott?
No.
I don't know.
I thought about it.
It just never happened.
Why not?
Never really had a reason to.
I've got everything I need here.
My parents are here.
I got a good job here.
Bought a condo, got a goldfish,
got everything I need.
You find what you're
looking for in the city.
I don't know what
I am looking for.
Then what are we
doing right now?
No, I know what I'm doing here.
I just don't know what I'm
doing out there.
I feel like
I don't really have a playbook.
Oh. What?
Have you bought the mission?
What? Why?
Abby.
Abby, Theo's cars pulling out
of the driveway right now.
Oh!
Abby!
Abby, get out now!
Abby.
Abby.
Abby.
Mr. Weston.
Morning. What can I
do for you, officer?
I just wanted to check in and make
sure Prescott was treating you well.
I'm in a bit of a
hurry. Of course.
Yeah, I know.
Also wanted to see
if you had seen a stray cat.
The neighbor next door.
She's got quite a few of them.
Looks like a little lost cat farm.
She had a lot of them.
So orange one that is missing.
Goes by Remy.
She's actually really
worried about him.
He gets away, and I'm just.
I'm checking around
the area to see.
I just.
She hadn't seen him.
I told her I'd knock, make some rounds.
So you say you haven't seen him,
and I guess you
haven't seen him.
Stray cat.
That was the best you
could come up with.
Look, that was too close, Abby.
You're a cop.
I panicked.
He, he could have found you.
Yeah, but he didn't.
But he could have.
But he didn't.
And we found another clue.
Psalm Chapter twenty
three, verse five
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil
and my cup overflows
Miss Weston is
leading us somewhere.
Or she has a penchant for
keeping the word of God close.
I doubt it.
What are the odds
that she gives me a lamp?
And then the next clue
is hidden in a matching lamp?
If it is a clue,
slim, I will give you that.
Wait a minute.
Table oil cup.
Kitchen. Mrs. Weston's kitchen.
We need to search
Ms. Weston's kitchen.
I think you need to stay away
from the house for a little while.
At least until we can
learn a little more.
Some more about what?
I'm serious, Abby.
I don't want you getting
yourself wrapped up
in something that
you can't untangle.
I'll be careful.
I promise.
Sorry.
I got to go.
Let me know if
you need anything?
Anything? Yeah.
I like having you back, Brooks.
I like being back.
Car twenty two.
I'm in route.
Cammie. Hi.
It's Abby, right?
Yes. You're back from
Avondale already?
Oh, Theo told me, right?
Yeah, it was just a quick trip.
Just have some work
stuff to take care of.
Right, of course.
Well, I hope you guys get time
to explore Prescott.
It's such a cool place.
Are you planning on
staying? I don't know.
It's Theo he...
Yes. I can't imagine what
you guys are going through.
If you need anything,
I'm just up the way.
Thanks.
Of course.
And Theo is he..?
Oh, he's.
Let's go now.
It was really nice to
officially meet you, Abby.
Nice to meet you, too.
Have a good night.
[Unintelligible Arguing]
[Unintelligible Arguing]
Hey, Matt.
You might want to come down here
and do a wellness check on Cami.
So everybody's good here.
If you need anything,
give us a call.
Have a good night.
Let's go
Are they gone for the night?
Yeah, they said they're
heading back to Avondale.
I'm going back in.
No, I don't think
that's a good idea.
I'll be quick.
I have to figure
out what Miss Weston
wanted me to find before
someone else finds it first.
Any luck?
Nope.
Well, thanks for
walking me home.
I'm just doing my civic duty.
I should probably get
back to the station.
Right.
Yes, of course.
I'll see you at church
again this weekend?
Kind of like going home, right?
Call me if anything comes up.
I will.
Okay
Have a goodnight.
Goodnight.
What did you want me
to find, Miss Weston?
Hi!
Thank you, Parker.
And great job on the math test.
Your studying is
really paying off.
Whoa, you're almost sold out.
What can I say?
Sunflowers make people generous.
Oh, you're being modest.
What's your secret?
Promise not to tell.
Scout's honor.
Sunflower butter gives the
cookies a nuttier flavor
and makes them richer.
Here.
Oh, oh okay.
It's on the house.
Thank you.
Hey, Abby.
This is Zeke.
His classroom is
right next to mine.
Zeke, meet my sister, Abby.
It is so nice to meet you!
You as well.
I've heard quite
a lot about you.
Ah, good things I hope?
Well, I can say for a fact
that your sister's really happy
that you're back in Prescott
Happy to be back.
Well, I better get back
to making my rounds.
I don't want Principal Jones to
think I'm sleeping on the job.
Nice to meet you.
Thank you for the cookie.
You're welcome
He's cute!
What?
No!
Ew
Are you going to buy a cookie
or are you just here to make me
as uncomfortable as possible?
What are sisters for?
Can I help you with something?
Actually, yes.
How well did you get to know Ms.
I'd say about as well as anyone
here did. Why?
Well, I got the unofficial green light
from my distributor to look into her death
as a potential next season.
How you manage that?
It's a long story.
Do you know of anybody who would be after
her fortune besides the long lost son?
I mean, her ex-boyfriend was
always a bit shady, in my opinion.
Miss Weston had an ex
- boyfriend. Oh, yeah.
He runs that mechanic shop right
off the alley on Main Street.
Do you know if she
was ever married?
Um. I don't.
But public records would show that.
You should check the library.
They might have old copies.
You're a genius, sis.
That's what they tell me.
Thank you.
All right.
One for the road.
Pleasure doing
business with you.
Thank you.
Hey, Penny.
Abby. Hi. What can
I help you with?
Do you know if Miss Weston was
ever married?
Not to my knowledge.
I did hear a rumor that there was a guy
shortly after she finished that house,
but he was long gone before
Theo was born, putting him up
for adoption was one of the hardest
things she ever did in her life.
Regretted it until her last day.
Well, why did she do it?
From what I heard, she said he deserved
a family with both a mother and a father.
And she got a lot of pressure
from her family
having a baby out
of wedlock and all.
The whole situation
was just so sad.
Well, she must have
been happy, right?
Reconnecting with him
after all these years.
I know she took an ad out in the
paper every weekend.
A regional one, writing to
him, trying to make contact.
I'm just glad it finally worked.
Excuse me, please.
Hey!
Wait!
Anything?
Nothing.
I need to go back
into the house.
The table, oil. cup, clue.
Abby...
There's someone else trying
to get into this house Matt.
And Miss Weston
gave me a key for a reason.
We need to stay ahead of
whoever else may be onto this.
Okay.
I can get a proper search
warrant in the morning.
We'll make sure that no stone
or knickknack is unturned.
Thank you.
Hey uh...
What are you doing tonight?
I was planning on
working on my podcast pitch.
Why? What's up?
I just
wanted to see if you wanted to
grab a bite to eat
at the usual spot.
Yeah, I've been here a million
times. It's never for dinner.
Oh, you're missing out.
Am I?
It's Fantastic
Thank you. Thank you.
You've never had the pizza here?
Mmh mmh
So you've heard of an everything
bagel, right?
Yeah. Okay,
so I call this the everything pizza.
Okay.
Each topping is paired with
this complimentary counterpart.
So you've got your meat lover section,
your Hawaiian section, barbecue chicken,
veggie lover.
That way you can kind of
get the best of all worlds.
- It's brilliant.
- Yeah.
Dive in.
- Cheers.
- Cheers.
What do you think?
It's amazing.
Ten out of ten
Who is that?
No one.
I've known you since
you were seven.
You're a terrible liar.
One of my better qualities.
Spill.
We uh, we started dating
right out of college.
She's a pediatric
nurse in Greenville.
Parents live up on Milton.
We were together for years.
I proposed and everything.
What happened?
Nothing.
A lot of things
that I don't know.
I could never be enough for her.
How is that possible?
You're charming and handsome.
You clearly have
great taste in pizza.
I mean, you're any
girl's dream guy.
You know?
Well, thank you for saying that.
You know, I'm
sorry that we kind of lost touch
It happens.
You know, life gets in the way.
Only if you let it.
Mmm...
I know what you mean... though.
I feel that way about Ross.
It's like
he should have been perfect.
But when I lost the baby.
It's like we couldn't pretend it
was okay anymore.
Abby, I'm.
I'm so sorry.
I didn't handle it well.
I threw myself into work.
I shut him out.
I took it out on everyone.
I'm not proud of who I was then.
I'm sure everyone understands.
Yeah, but that
doesn't make it okay.
Are you proud of who are now?
Uh, TBD.
Is that why you came back here?
I don't know why
I came back here.
It's like everything hit the fan,
and all I could think was get home.
- The lamp... guided you back?
- Yeah.
Something like that.
How do you do it?
Do what?
Keep your faith.
You're a cop, for goodness sake.
After everything you've seen day in
and day out, how do you still believe?
I'd be lying if I
said it was easy.
My faith has been tested
more times than I can count.
You familiar with Mark
Chapter nine, verse twenty four?
I believe
help my unbelief.
it's about
knowing something that's true,
but having a hard time truly
believing it in your heart.
You can see it in front of you
with your own two eyes and
that verse I...
I use it as a prayer.
Help me with my unbelief in times
when I'm feeling disconnected.
Does it work?
You know, sometimes answering
prayers can take a while
and that can be challenging.
But I found that the Lord,
reveals himself to those who seek him.
I mean, that's nice in theory,
but I'm not sure that's how things
actually work in the real world.
I know from experience it is.
I know it's hard to
see right now, but
God has a plan for
you that's bigger than
you can even imagine.
Under a small vintage lamp
on the table in the corner,
I found the first clue,
and that led me to a second.
Another Bible verse
mentioning household items.
Psalm chapter 23, Verse five.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil.
My cup overflows.
Table. Oil. Cup.
Kitchen. Right?
But I searched the kitchen in Ms..Weston's
home and nothing. Back to square one.
Was Ms. Weston leading me somewhere,
or was all of this meaningless after all?
If I were Miss Weston,
what would that verse mean?
Table, oil.
Let's try this.
Dear God. Hi.
Sorry, it's been a while.
I don't want to start.
Have you had a chance
to review the samples yet?
I did.
And?
I'm not sure it's
totally working.
I agree with the cop character.
It just seems like this lady left
Bible verses around her house.
What about her fortune?
The lamp.
The business card.
I'm sorry, Abby.
There's just not enough there.
No!
Give me more time, please.
Something is going on.
I can feel it.
Fine.
A few more days.
But we need to finish this
Johnna Benson season strong.
I can't have it falling to the
wayside because you found something
shiny and entertaining.
Of course, all of the
reporting is done.
I just have to
report the episodes.
I want them in my inbox ASAP.
And with the
suspects narrowed down to the
building's maintenance team,
it was only a matter of time before
detectives would close in on them.
Hey sis!
What was the name of the mechanic shop
where you said Miss Weston's ex worked?
Hi!
Excuse me.
Can I help you?
Yes. I'm looking for...
Well, I don't know his name,
but he dated my friend.
Nico.
Someone here for you?
Oh, no he's not..
Hey, Nico.
Where are we at on the carburetor for Mrs.
Gale's truck?
It's on backorder, boss.
Excuse me.
[Sigh]
Excuse me.
One of the gentleman
will help you outside, ma'am.
Oh, I don't have car troubles.
What do you know
about Marion Weston?
I know that you two were.
I saw you the
night of the vigil.
Who are you?
I just want to ask
you a few questions.
- Get out of my shop.
- But... - Now!
Wait, he threatened you?
Well, it wasn't a threat, per
se, but was a little bit scary.
You okay?
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm okay.
But I do think we
need to look into him.
I saw a stack of past
due bills on the counter
and when I drove around to
other mechanics in the area,
they were doing double
the business Grey's was.
Plus, I found these.
You think you knew
about the fortune.
Based on his reaction?
I bet he does.
Abby Brooks.
Hello, Miss Brooks.
I'm calling to let you know that
the county clerk's office got back to me
with the history records of the house.
We'll be mailing the copy to you
this week.
Can you just tell me who owned
the home before I bought it?
They usually don't do
that over the phone.
Please. It's a bit
of an emergency.
It looks like the house was owned
by the Weston Railway Trust.
According to the reports,
there were various tenants.
But the house has been vacant
for the past few years.
Only had one owner,
Marion Weston.
Thank you.
Of course. Have
a good afternoon.
Matt,
If Miss Weston owned my house, that clue
might not have been about her kitchen
But about mine.
Have you guys been
in contact with
Miss Weston's estate attorney?
It's not usually
our department. Why?
Last time Theo was in town,
he mentioned something
about logistics.
I'll look into it.
What is this?
Oh, that was on Theo's key ring.
I'm sorry.
Any idea what it means?
Yeah.
This is the Freemont
Medical Conference.
Leah used to go every year.
The number four.
That's the day.
If you want other days,
there'd be other numbers.
Why would an accountant
go to a medical conference?
That's a good question.
So it looks like
their curriculum is
locked.
It's not available on the site.
I'll put in a request
when I get back to the station.
Are you finding anything?
Nothing.
We are coming up short again.
Sorry.
Another dead end.
[YOUNG ABBY VOICEOVER]
Dear God.
I want to start off
by saying thank you.
Thank you for my sister Sophia.
And for my papa.
I know my family
isn't traditional.
I love them.
I ask, Lord, that you help me
with my math test.
It is tomorrow,
and I'm so nervous.
What if I make mistakes?
Love, Abby.
I know a lot has happened.
And it's been a while
since we last spoke.
Since I spoke.
But I want to
thank you for taking such
good care of Papa and Sophia.
Their lives have
been really blessed,
and I can't thank you
enough for how happy
they are.
If I could have an an
ounce of what they have.
Yes, this is Officer MacAdams with
the Prescott Police Department.
I'm looking to obtain a copy of
the schedule of events for this
year's Fremont
Medical Conference.
Thank you.
So I'm kind of stuck,
and I have no idea what
Miss Weston meant by that verse.
When was the last time you read
the Book of Psalms?
I can confidently say
it's been a while.
[laughter]
You want to give
me the CliffsNotes?
Yeah.
That Psalm has themes of
assurance and care from God.
If a flock of sheep is guided
by a skilled shepherd,
they are protected and provided
for in the same way.
David praises God in this
Psalm for giving him peace.
There's a knowing that God
always protects and provides.
You know, there's nothing
you could ever do to make me
love you less.
I know change is scary,
but that doesn't
mean it's not good.
No, I mean, I need a drink.
No, that's only a
temporary relief.
I was kidding.
I got to go to work.
But please stop by any time
I love you kiddo.
I love you too.
[ROSS ON PHONE]
Hey.
Hi.
[ROSS ON PHONE]
I've been trying to reach you.
I know. I.
I'm sorry.
Things have just it's been...
[ROSS ON PHONE]
Yeah, I know
So, what's up?
[ROSS ON PHONE] It's kind of
silly, actually, but
[ROSS ON PHONE] did you happen to
grab my grandfather's cufflinks
[ROSS ON PHONE] when we
packed up the apartment?
[ROSS ON PHONE] They were in
your jewelry box last I remember.
Right, yeah.
I'm happy to check for them.
[ROSS ON PHONE]
Thank you.
[ROSS ON PHONE] I hate to ask but,
I want to wear them for the wedding.
[ROSS ON PHONE]
So thank you for checking.
Yeah, of course.
I'll check when I get home.
Talk to you later.
What did you find?
Nothing good.
Oh.
John Gray's got a rap sheet
longer than a drugstore receipt.
Guys that work for him.
Not any better. Are you going to
bring him in for questioning?
You have nothing
to question him on.
Well, maybe if you tell the chief
they might have to do an autopsy.
Theo didn't want one.
We have to try.
If you file a concerned
Citizens report,
we might be able
to do something.
My offer still stands.
You want to join me?
Well, hi.
Hey.
Good to see so many familiar
faces in the congregation today.
I know the Lord is pleased
with this attendance.
I want to start off today's sermon
with Hebrews chapter four, verse two.
For good news came to
us just as to them.
But the message they
heard did not benefit them
because they were not united
by faith with
those who listened.
For We who have believed entered
that rest,
just as God has said.
Table, Oil, Cup
As in my anger, I swore
they shall not enter my rest.
Though his works were finished
at the foundation of the world.
Nothing!
How much do you know about
Miss Westons last day?
Not a lot, why?
I think the clue was leading us
to Miss Weston's last supper.
If you will.
I'll see what I can find.
You guys are going
to get us in trouble.
Sorry!
Shall we pray?
Yes.
Dear Heavenly Father,
thank you for my two
beautiful granddaughters for this
time together and for this food.
Let it bless and
nourish our bodies.
In Jesus name, we pray.
Amen.
Amen.
Amen.
This looks amazing.
Couldn't have done
it without Soph!
Hey, you made the sauce.
True
Wait.
Is this...?
Nana's secret sauce?
Oh, you kept it.
Mm hmm.
I don't have a lot of memories of her,
but getting to cook with her recipes,
read her handwriting, it's,
I don't know...
special.
Having someone from the past
connected to you.
You remind me a lot of Cora.
You have her eyes, her spirit.
She never took no
for an answer either.
She would be very proud of the
women you two have grown up to be.
I know I am.
Oh, I am so thankful
you both are here.
Life's best journeys
lead you home.
What was that?
What? Zeke calling you?
Well, after school hours.
Oh, it's nothing.
Okay, fine.
He asked for my help planning
the school play this year.
He usually heads up the whole
thing, but I guess he's a bit
overworked and needs
an extra sort of hands.
Or he wants to
spend time with you.
You're going to do it?
I don't know.
You should totally
do it. Give me your phone.
Is that too much?
No. Okay.
You won't regret it.
He's excited for us
to work together.
So, do we start planning the
wedding now or do we do it later?
With the first clue
being so obvious,
and the second clue
seemingly being a dead end.
And we will pick this up later.
Hey.
According to her phone records and
the last address entered into her GPS,
Miss Weston's last
supper was at a soup kitchen.
Yeah.
Welcome.
Soup?
You're welcome.
- Hi. Can I help you?
- Hi. Yes, I'm Abby Brooks.
I called about Marian Weston.
Of course.
God rest her soul.
Came here the night
before she passed.
Gave us the biggest blessing
the Lord could give.
What do you mean?
This kitchen has been
around for decades.
But the past few years
it's been hard for us.
The night before she passed,
she gave us this baby.
May I?
Oh, go ahead.
Doesn't look like much but...
what was inside was exactly
what we needed more
than we needed.
Whoa.
That is a generous donation.
Proverbs chapter
twenty two, verse five.
Thorns and snares
are in the way of the crooked.
Whoever guards his soul
will keep far from them.
We're on the right track.
- Thank you.
- Oh. No, no.
You go ahead and
keep that, dear.
I believe the Lord speaks to us
through Scripture.
And he clearly guided
you to that verse.
Thank you.
Yeah, you're welcome.
Oh. Oh, I'm so sorry.
Thorns and snares.
Thorns and snares.
What has thorns and snares?
I want us to be really sure
before making any moves. Okay?
Of course.
I can't have anything
happening to you.
I will be careful.
- I promise.
- Okay.
[Radio Chatter]
Oh, I got to go. Sorry.
It's okay.
Okay. I'll see you later.
- Yeah, see you later.
- All right.
Thorns and snares,
thorns and snares.
And we have promising leads in
John Grey and Theo and...
I think we... we're
really on to something.
Look, Abby, the idea
has a unique angle
with a good hook,
but that's if it was a murder.
But there's no evidence of that.
Just some Bible verses.
That are leading me somewhere.
Do you have this week's episode
for the Johnna Benson case?
Yeah. I sent it to you.
No, you didn't.
Oh, Hannah, I'm so sorry.
I'm sending it now.
Abby, we cannot have you making
mistakes like this.
I know. I'm so sorry.
It won't happen again.
I can guarantee...
With listenership dipping
I need you to focus.
Drop the Weston story.
Finish the Benson story.
But, Hannah.
This is not up for discussion.
Finish out the season and we
will be in touch with next steps.
Are you firing me?
We're just exploring, taking the
show in a different direction.
This season's ratings are low.
They're low because the Benson
case isn't a real mystery.
It was basically already solved
before I started investigating it.
And the listeners know
that we need to give them what they want
which is us actually helping somebody.
And we could do that with
Miss Weston's case.
We have the opportunity
to make a real difference here.
Finish the season, Abby.
And then we consider this
partnership officially terminated.
Dear Lord, look,
I don't know how to do this
anymore, but I feel so lost.
Everything is
working with Matt
and seeing his faith
and the faith of
Miss Weston and
my grandfather's.
They, they trust you so much.
And I want that.
That relationship.
But I don't know where to start.
So... help me with my unbelief.
Our competition is back.
Hands where I can see them.
We kept our relationship
private because
it's a small town.
People talk.
But there was something
going on with her at the end.
She got cryptic
before she passed.
I just.
I just want to find
out what happened.
Come on, John.
I'll take you home.
Thorns and snares.
You were on to
something, John Grey.
Oof
What in the world
were you thinking?
Matt, I can explain!
No, there's nothing here, Abby.
You heard John Grey!
That guy has a rap
sheet a mile long.
He's not a reliable source.
But, what about the clues?
The verses!
No, it's not a clue!
It's just something left behind
by a senile old lady.
[CHIEF OF POLICE]
Matt, over here!
Stay here.
Chief.
Chief, I had every right
to think
every right to think that there
was something going on here
This is it.
What just happened?
I just got put on desk duty.
Matt, I...
And this is real life, Abby.
There are consequences!
No. I know!
There's nothing here.
- Matt, please.
- There is nothing here.
We're done.
No, but we're so
close. We are so close!
- We're done.
- But, Matt, please.
It's Officer MacAdams.
You've reached
Officer Matt MacAdams.
Sorry. Take your call.
Please leave me a message.
I'll get right back to you.
Hey, it's me again.
I just.
Call me back, please.
I really need to talk to you.
The podcast distributor pulled
the plug, so I'm out of a job.
And Matt, I mean,
he won't talk to me,
and I'm no closer to actually figuring
out what happened to Miss Weston.
I just.
I feel so lost.
You know, God gave
you these gifts, Abby.
Everything you're experiencing
is not a mistake.
When was the last
time you prayed?
Every time I do I
feel ridiculous?
Like I'm speaking into the void?
Like God's not listening?
No, he's always listening.
It sounds to me
like you need to slow down.
Give the Lord space
to speak to you.
The Lord himself goes
before you and will be with you.
He will never leave
you, nor forsake you.
Do not be afraid.
Do not be discouraged.
Oh uh, just a moment.
I'm sorry, that's
my two o'clock.
No, no.
The church will be empty
until choir practice tonight.
Just saying.
Thank you
[PHONE BUZZ]
Dear God...
I... I...
There, there dear.
Are you familiar
with Deuteronomy?
Chapter thirty one,
Verses eight. Nine.
The Lord himself goes before you
and He will be with you.
He will never leave you.
Nor forsake you.
Do not be afraid
and do not be discouraged.
You know, this is the first place I come
to and I feel lost or a bit off path.
It helps me to recenter
and the Lord never fails
to guide me in the
right direction.
That would really come
in handy right now.
Well, there's a
difference in our lives.
When we're following
our own self
verses following the
guidance of the Lord.
If there's something
on your heart,
something gnawing that you.
That's the Lord.
He's trying to tell you and
guide you in the right direction.
Don't ignore it dear.
If you forgive others
when they sin against you,
Your Heavenly
Father will also forgive you.
Matthew Chapter
six, verse fourteen.
You're really good at this,
aren't you God?
Hey, um..
Can you meet?
And I shouldn't have
taken it out on you.
I know that you were hurting
just as much as I was,
and I wish I could have gotten out
of my own way, out of my own grief
to love you through yours.
You did the best you could Abby.
I'll never fault you for that.
I'm just...
I'm so sorry for all of it.
I forgive you.
And I'm sorry for my
part in this, too.
I could have been kinder.
I could've shown more
grace. It's just...
I really wish I could
have been what you needed.
Even if we were perfect.
I don't think it would have
changed the outcome.
The grief, It allowed us to see the
cracks that were already there long before
we lost the baby.
I want you to be happy, Abby.
You deserve love
just as much as anyone else.
These are for you.
Thanks.
So, have you and
Mary set a date yet?
Oh, don't get me started.
I'm aware of that.
I'm doing the best
job that I can. No.
If I did it, then we
would already have it.
And we'd be done
with this already.
Penny, do you have a minute?
What's on your mind, Abby?
Do you know
what this business card is for?
Where on earth did you get this?
It was in a lamp.
I'd recognize this
logo anywhere.
This law firm.
Rebecca Gardner.
Terrible woman.
I never met her, but she scammed my
cousin Lucy out of thousands of dollars.
What? How?
She was in an accident.
A hit and run.
She's fine, thank goodness.
But her attorney,
Rebecca Gardner,
convinced her to settle out of
court. She did.
But she never received
the settlement money.
She tried to fight it,
but they had records.
Proof somehow that they paid my
cousin when they never did.
She tried to
sue, but didn't
have the resources.
They bled her dry.
Do you think Miss Weston was
working with Rebecca Gardner?
Oh, gosh.
I certainly hope not.
If so, that money
she was setting aside for Theo
is likely long gone.
So we'll put men's business
here, women's business
there, and all those pieces that
are a little worse for wear.
We'll put here to donate to that
company that reuses fabrics.
Great.
This is a ton of
donations, Papa.
Been collecting them
for over a year.
Job fairs next weekend.
And I want to make sure that everything
we need to help anyone in our community
better their working life include
a proper interview outfit.
I think that's really cool.
- Can I ask you guys something?
- Yeah.
Have you ever...
This is going to sound insane,
but have you ever been visited
by an angel?
Yeah, many times.
Really?
If you've been visited by one
that is a good thing.
They are messengers sent
from God to help you.
Well, helpful they were.
I met with Ross.
How'd it go?
Really well.
Yeah.
Let's just say the message from
God was loud and clear.
The chicken coop.
What?
I will be right back.
I am. I'm so sorry.
I'm so sorry,
Matt.
Look, I know you're
upset with me,
and I totally understand,
but I figured out what the last verse meant
I'm heading to Miss Watson's
house now!
[Abby Panicking]
[ABBY VOICE MESSAGE] I figured
out what the last verse meant.
[ABBY VOICE MESSAGE] I'm heading
to Miss Watson's house now.
[ABBY VOICE MAILBOX] Hi, you've reached
Abby Brooks. Please leave a message.
Hey, Carson...
Can you let the chief know I'm going to
do a well check at Miss Westons house?
[Abby Panicking]
Shhhh...
Shhhh...
[Abby Breathing Heavily]
Where is it?
Wha..What?
I know you know where it is.
A new will. Marian made one.
I found this letter in the coop.
I know you know where it is.
I don't know.
I don't know what
you're talking about.
Cami? Where's Cami?
What did you do to her?
Can you stop?
Stop,
stop.
She might let you live
if you let me know
where the will is.
Please, please,
please.
I don't want to
hurt anyone else.
What?
[Abby Gasps]
Rebecca...
I need that will Abby.
And I know you know where it is.
I am done playing games.
I will do whatever it takes.
Okay Becky, calm...
Let's calm down.
Police!
Hands up!
No, no, please.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Please, Please, No!
I'm so sorry.
I'm sorry.
Let me cut you free.
I'm not Theo.
No, but you are under arrest.
After years of searching.
Miss Weston finally made contact with
who she believed to be her real son.
They began corresponding via
letters, but one day,
Miss Weston noticed
something was off.
The handwriting had changed.
And when the writer claiming to
be Theo, asked
Miss Weston to send
the letters to a P.O.
Box and said of the address,
Miss Weston started
to have her doubts.
She mailed the next letter to
his address but got no response.
So she tried the P.O. box and communication
resumed, but she knew something wasn't right.
She also had her doubts about
her estate attorney,
Rebecca Gardner.
She filed a complaint
against Rebecca
after reviewing her financial statements
where she found some discrepancies.
Which led to an investigation that
ultimately shut down her firm.
Rebecca knew about
Miss Weston's communication with her
biological son and about her millions.
So she set up a plan.
Intercept the letters.
And since they had never met in
person, find a fake Theo and get rid of
Miss Weston, to
steal her fortune.
She blackmail her ex-boyfriend,
a doctor with a bit of a shady past
into using his medical background
and posing as fake Theo.
To get rid of Miss Weston so they could
claim the money she set aside for her son.
And if he helped her,
they'd split the fortune.
Or so Rebecca told him.
Miss Weston was communicating
with the fake Theo for months.
She had her doubts, so she tried to
contact Theo using the old address.
But they were
intercepted by Rebecca.
She'd shared this information
with John Grey.
He was doing what he could to help her,
even if he didn't know all of the details.
And she wanted to
return the favor.
Miss Weston was suspicious.
So she hid the whereabouts of her
fortune in a place no one would find it.
Even her crooked estate manager.
In her first home in Prescott.
Along with the addresses for who
she believed to be her real son.
And set me up with everything.
I would need to
track it all down.
If I had a little faith.
Your drive up was okay?
You guys didn't
hit any traffic or anything?
Thank you guys for being here.
This is so exciting.
Guys!
This is Theo, the real Theo.
How nice to meet you, son.
Welcome to Prescott.
You sure it's the
right one this time?
You and I both know
you saw the DNA test.
Hey, I'm sorry for doubting you.
Oh, it's okay.
I truly doubted myself.
What got you back on track?
Well, let's just say I
got a not so subtle hint.
You know, now that you'll likely
have some free time on your hands,
What do you say about dinner?
I know a great pizza spot.
Only if you promise me
that we get one of every topping
in the correct grouping.
Deal
[Phone Buzzing]
Oh. Oh.
Take that.
- Sorry. - No. - I'll be quick.
- Take it. Go ahead go.
Real quick.
Hannah. Hi.
I just read an article
on the Weston case.
You were right.
I should have trusted your gut.
Listen, I think.
We were a bit rash
in removing you from the lineup.
We'd love to have you.
Actually Hannah I...
I want my own show.
One that I'm in charge of.
One about faith?
About how it leads people to do
incredible things, have incredible
breakthroughs,
and maybe even solve a mystery.
Or two.
I love it.
It's a great way to reach a niche
market with a solid hook that I think
you would be perfect for.
I also loved Officer
MacAdams insights.
He had a great voice
and you two had chemistry.
He'd be a great recurring guest.
