The Jane Mysteries: Too Much to Lose (2024) Movie Script
1
[Performed by Jodie Sweetin]
Every day I wake up
then as I get dressed
I tell myself today I'm
going to try my best
Because today is the day that
I put my star up in the sky
So everybody can
see how I shine
And yesterday I couldn't reach
but now I caught some zees
So I string them
all together
Like a big circus trapeze
Then I'll swing
myself real high
Put my star up in the sky
So everybody can
see it every night
And I know that
every Jack and Jill
Has a rolling up a hill
Others keep it on
their windowsill
The passersby
Well I'll just put
my star up in the sky
Yeah I'll just put
my star up in the sky
[song ends]
[strums a few funny cords]
Dare I say we're ready
for the main stage
at the Crystal Crown?
Well, you know, it might be a
little bit different once we're
in a grand ballroom
performing in front of
like a thousand people.
You're right. We'll
be much better.
We should prepare an encore!
Ohhh, yes! Two encores.
Whatever it takes.
I want to put on such
an incredible show
that the donors can't
possibly resist making
ridiculously generous donations
to the Children's Hospital.
Well unfortunately,
at a charity event,
it's not about how
incredible the show is
it's about the donors showing
up for those who need it.
At least that's what
Harold used to say.
And he should know.
He threw the best charity
galas this town has ever seen!
I love how you're carrying on
Uncle Harold's
philanthropic work.
But I imagine doing all
this planning without him
must be a little hard.
Actually, it's a really
nice way to keep him close.
These kids and their families
face such heavy
uncertainty every day.
I mean, look at these faces.
How could anyone not
want to help these kids?
- [knocking at the door]
- [Sadie] Oh!
That'll be the journalist
from the Old City Times.
She reached out and
said she wanted to
create some buzz for the event.
That's great!
You go spread the good news
and I'll clean up in here.
Actually, she wanted
to interview you.
Me?
[Margret] Thanks again
for meeting with me.
Of course. We were hoping
to get word out about
the Children's Hospital
Gala however we can.
Please, make
yourself comfortable.
So, you've been running the
Foundation for Righting Wrongs
for a while now?
Yes, yeah.
And your Uncle Harold left
it to you after his passing?
Yeah, he did.
In fact, it was
Harold's altruism
that really inspired the Gala.
But you have no previous
experience in detective work?
No, actually my background is
in performance, singing, which
I will be doing this weekend at
the Children's Hospital Gala.
And you've already brought
justice to many cold cases,
right?
Right again. Yeah, you've
really done your research!
How does a singer with no
experience as an investigator
pull that off?
You know, I thought
this interview was about
the Children's Hospital Gala.
And I have a very busy
week getting all that done.
So if you would like to do an
interview about the Foundation,
we can schedule
that for next week.
I'm sorry but this can't wait!
Ms. Da Silva, please, I
really need your help.
My co-worker, she's
been missing...
Wait wait wait.
This whole interview was a ruse?
I had to talk to you.
I know you would
do the same thing
if you were in my situation.
Your undercover work
is kind of legendary.
You do anything for a case.
How do you know that?
I'm a journalist and
I've done my research.
I may be new, but I
know what I'm doing.
Jane, it has to be you.
You don't take no for an answer
and neither did my friend Irene.
I'm worried that it might have
gotten her into some trouble.
Well, if you needed
the Foundation's help,
why not just contact
the Foundation directly?
Go through the proper channels?
I did!
But this isn't a cold case,
it's a missing persons case.
And we need to find her, now!
Wait, so your friend
Irene is missing?
Completely disappeared!
Please, you need to
find her quickly.
We're all so worried about her.
She's your co-worker?
My mentor, Irene March,
investigative journalist
with the Old City Times.
Irene always shows up for work.
She prides herself on being
the woman who's always a
step ahead in the news room.
Well, it sounds like you
need to contact the police,
file a missing persons report.
I did. But they've
haven't been much help.
They went to her house
yesterday, did a wellness check.
When they saw that she wasn't
there and her car was gone,
with no signs of forced entry,
they said it didn't warrant
further investigation.
Why do you think I could help?
You've solved cases that
the police couldn't solve
in over 15 years!
Irene would call that gumption.
Thank you, Margret,
but I have so much to do
this week for the Gala.
Irene devoted her whole career
to breaking high profile cases
and exposing the bad guys.
She's been fighting
for other people
who can't fight for
themselves for years.
Now we need to fight for her.
She's a worthy cause too.
And I agree.
I just, I don't know that
I'm the person to help.
Please just hear me out.
Sure, I'll listen.
Here, why don't you explain
the situation to me?
She's been missing
for almost two days.
I saw her leave our office
building early Thursday morning.
I tried to congratulate
her on winning $100,000
on a TV game show the day
before but I couldn't catch up.
Do you think that winning all
that money had something to do
with her disappearance?
The first thing Irene taught
me in the newsroom is,
there are no coincidences.
- [John] Hey!
- [Jane] Donuts?
Oh! Not necessary,
but very welcome.
Well, I appreciate you
looking into a case
you're not assigned to.
Oh, well, lucky for
everyone there's no
homicide investigation
filling my day.
As long as I don't
step on any toes,
I'm sure the missing persons
unit could use the help.
All right. So,
what have we got?
Okay, well, the
wellness check here,
it indicates Irene
March lives alone.
Nothing really unusual,
no sign of break in.
Now they didn't gain access
to the interior of the house.
But a neighbor said Irene
mentioned wanting to go away
because she was
stressed from work.
Huh.
So then the question is why
disappear without a trace?
Uh huh.
Is there anything in there about
her appearance on a game show?
Yeah.
Yeah, she won some money on
a game show called Pun Hero.
Pun Hero?
Yeah, the game show about
puns. Do you ever watch it?
I can't really say
that puns are my thing.
You?
Oh yeah. I enjoy a good pun.
And so did Irene, apparently.
Her win on the show
was a really big deal.
She upset the current
champion, Edgar Salmon,
who lost almost $300,000.
Wow, that's a lot of money.
Whooo, wow.
Yeah, that sounds
like motive to me.
Motive? For what?
Hey, don't get ahead
of yourself here, okay.
There's no evidence of
foul play here at all.
Yeah, but can't an absence
of evidence be evidence?
Uh, well, yeah, I mean...
People who win large sums of
money like to sometimes lay low
because they just
want to get away
from people looking
for handouts.
Okay. That's plausible.
Or, you know, she could be
off vacationing for a week
enjoying her prize money.
We also can't forget Irene is
an investigative journalist.
She could have uncovered
something that put her at risk.
Yeah.
Or she could be researching
a story undercover.
I mean, anything is possible.
But the officer who put
this report together
doesn't think anything
nefarious happened at all.
So what, they're just going to
wait for her to turn back up?
I mean, a person is missing.
Shouldn't the police be
following every lead?
Yeah, I'm sure they are.
But Irene is an
adult in good health.
You know, it's plausible
she could be anywhere.
Most people in these cases
show up after a few days.
But you should know that
some of Irene's exposs
didn't paint the police
in a very good light.
Well, if the police aren't
doing their jobs I can see why
the Foundation is
inundated with requests.
Well, luckily they have you.
Us. They have us.
All right. Well, I'll let Sadie
know that we have a new case.
We'll find her.
I doughnut doubt it.
You've been holding onto that
one in for a while, haven't you?
Look, I'll look into
Irene's phone records
and bank records for you, okay.
Ah, well, for the
record, you're amazing.
I don't think that
was even a pun.
[John] We'll work on that.
Okay. All right.
I'll see you later.
[exciting game show music]
Welcome to the finale of
our game show Pun Hero!
The game that's pun-doubtedly
obsessed with wordplay.
I'm your host, Chet Filson.
[applause]
Welcome back, our
reigning champion,
Edgar Salmon.
Thank you, Chet.
It's a pleasure
to be back again.
And hello to our newcomer,
it's Irene March!
I am so delighted to be here
at this pun-nacle of humor!
I've always had a pun-chent
for telling jokes.
My sister doesn't
like it though.
She only laughs at
pun-in-a-million.
Irene, you are definitely not
pun-familiar with this game.
Who will be our winning
wordsmith tonight?
Will Irene March
be a step ahead?
Or will it be another swish
for our friend, not the fish,
Edgar Salmon.
Whose nine day winning streak
could really pay off tonight.
If he becomes the first Pun
Hero to win ten games in a row.
Don't worry Chet,
I am pun-stoppable.
Are you sure, Edgar? This
is a serious pun-dertaking.
[Chet] There you
have it. Stay tuned!
Anything can happen
here on Pun Hero!
Oh. It looks like Irene
wasn't so lucky after all.
[multiple message notifications]
[Jane] It goes to
the top of what?
[Sadie] Oh good! It's working.
What's working?
I started a social
media campaign for you
on the Foundation's account.
To spread word that
Irene is missing.
Hashtag IreneMarchMissing.
It'll help if more people
are on the lookout for her.
Well, people are not
only on the lookout,
they're crying conspiracy!
Well, you'll have to
weed through the messages
to see which ones are
worth following up,
but it's good to have a
public forum for tips.
Someone out there
knows something.
It seems like a lot
of people out there
think they know a lot of things.
I'm not sure if I should
be thanking you for this
or cursing you.
Fair enough.
You can silence the alerts and
just focus on the facts for now.
Thank you.
Every minute counts in
a missing persons case.
And the sooner you find Irene
the sooner you can
help me prep the Gala!
I'll start at her office
first thing in the morning.
But, for tonight, what
can I do for you, Sadie?
The Times has been downsizing
since the news moved online.
Irene always advocated for
the paper to remain in print.
She was old school like that.
This is her office right here.
Looks like Irene really knew
how to craft a headline.
Yeah.
And she didn't seem to shy
away from any controversy.
She was seasoned, reporting
crime for 30 years.
Irene knew what she was doing.
Hmmm...
Do you think she could
be undercover somewhere?
Undercover wasn't Irene's thing.
She didn't back down
or hide from anyone.
She liked to look people in the
eye when she took them down.
How were relations
in the office?
She was cordial with everyone,
but Irene is a tough
woman to get to know.
She was a firm believer
in the power of words
and she never minced them.
I can't imagine that
sat well with everyone?
A trusted, devoted journalist
with a strong sense of ethics
and a reputation for
exposing fraud goes missing.
I mean, anyone that Irene
wrote an expos about
could hold a grudge
or want revenge.
I suppose that
could be possible.
I'll do some research before
we overwhelm our suspect list.
Yeah.
Is this Sadie's Charity Gala?
Why would Irene have this?
Press releases are delivered
to the whole office.
[knocking]
Hi. Is Irene back?
No.
I saw some people in her
office and thought maybe she...
Wait, who are you?
[Sophie] She's not
been fired has she?
No! No.
This is...
I'm an old friend of Irene's.
We had lunch plans today,
but Margret just informed
me of her disappearance.
If only the police would step up
and take her disappearance
more seriously.
You don't think the police
are doing their job?
I think the story Irene
published about the
old Police Chief isn't
helping move things along.
That can't be true.
Don't worry. My sources and
I have an ear to the ground.
I owe Irene that much.
She wouldn't give up on a story
like this and I won't either.
We'll bring Irene home soon.
- [phone rings]
- Oh, excuse me.
Well, if you want to go
through Irene's old exposs
and see if you
can find anything?
Will do. I'll let you know
when I see you tonight.
All right. It's a date.
[Jane] What are you doing?
I used to bird-sit for Irene.
And she'd always leave me a key.
Bird-sit?
Oh yeah.
Irene loves Perry as if
he was her own child.
[Jane] Keep the lights off.
I brought a flashlight.
[Margret] Oops!
That shouldn't be there.
Oh my gosh!
[Jane] Someone has definitely
been here looking for something.
[Parrot] Peek-a-boo!
Peek-a-boo!
[both gasp]
Hi Perry!
I see you! Peek-a-boo!
- [Jane] Hi Perry.
- [Perry squawks]
[Perry] Be quiet bird!
I see you! I see you!
[Jane] Stay right there!
The police are on their way!
[Margret] Are they?
How did you...
[Craig] Please! Whatever
you want, just...
Who are you? What
are you doing here?
I'm, I'm Craig, Irene's nephew.
Did Irene ever mention a nephew?
Ah... She did mention
a nephew actually.
She said she wanted to...
Never mind, I'll tell you later.
Let's see some ID.
Oh yeah.
I don't have any on
me. I walked here.
Oh, well that's convenient!
I didn't think I'd needed to
prove my identity to someone
that broke into my aunt's house!
We didn't break in.
I knew where the key
was from bird-sitting.
You're the co-worker
who bird-sits Perry?
Oh, she trusted you.
Yeah, and how are we
supposed to trust you, Craig?
I don't know...
My photos are
hanging on her wall?
He's right.
Oh! Look at the one
with your braces.
Oh yeah...
That only proves
that he knows Irene.
What are you doing
here right now?
Aunt Irene hasn't been
returning any of my texts.
My mom wanted me
to check in on her.
So you're wandering around
her house in the dark?
Jane, I think he's
telling the truth.
I didn't want to touch the
light switch or anything.
This could be a crime scene.
Clearly something happened here.
I should be asking
why you're here!
Ah... Hi. I'm Margret.
Your Aunt Irene is my mentor
at the Old City Times.
I haven't been able to
get a hold of her either.
It's not like her.
I'm worried so I hired
Jane and her Foundation
to help me find her.
Do you think something bad
could have happened to Irene?
[Perry] Peek-a-boo! Squawk!
Irene would never leave
Perry alone for this long.
Something's not
right. I know it.
Yeah, something is
definitely odd here.
I think we should
call the police.
And let's try to get a hold
of Detective John Cameron.
He works with us
at the Foundation.
He'll know what to do.
Okay, I swear, I haven't
done anything! Okay?
Call my mom, she'll
confirm everything!
Craig, it's fine. You
can put your arms down.
Like you said, this is
a potential crime scene.
We need to call the police.
You believe me?
I mean, you seem like
a pretty honest guy.
You can tell the police
everything you know.
And if you're telling the truth,
everything should be fine.
But someone was definitely
here looking for something.
And we need to figure
out what that was
if we're going to help
your Aunt Irene. So...
Take a look around, see
if anything is missing.
[Craig] Hey, check this out.
Who writes letters anymore?
Let me see that.
It's signed Edgar Salmon.
That game show guy?
Yeah.
[Jane reads note] Irene...
The only thing worse than your
wordplay is your sense of humor.
You're dead to me.
Edgar sounds pretty
vicious there.
Definitely. That's a threat.
Yeah.
When was the last time
you talked to Irene?
A week ago. But my mom talked
to her Thursday morning
Well, if your mom was the
last person to talk to her,
she might have some
really good insight.
Do you think we
could call your mom?
Uhhh... Yeah. I think we
could definitely do that.
But, um, I mean, is
that really necessary?
Craig, come on. I was
just starting to like you.
Please take Mom with
a grain of salt.
Her and Irene aren't exactly on
the best terms at the moment.
Just sister stuff because
they're identical twins, so.
You know how that goes.
They've always been competitive
and this game show windfall
is a touchy subject.
[phone rings]
Oh, honey, not right now.
They're about to call
the lottery numbers.
It's important, Mom.
I'm with someone who needs
to ask you a few questions.
[Craig] She's a detective.
Oh, you're in trouble...
Hi there, my name is Jane.
When was the last time
you talked to Irene?
Thursday morning.
I called to congratulate her
on her big game show cash win,
but she didn't want
to talk about it,
ungrateful as always.
But did anything seem
off about her to you?
No. She was her usual
paranoid, self important self.
[Jane] Paranoid? How so?
My twin has always had the
flair for the dramatic.
[Ida] She always thinks people
are looking at her funny.
I told her not to
have such a big head.
Did you talk about
anything else?
[Ida] Yeah. I asked if she
was going to pay me back
the $45,000 that she owes
me, I lent her years ago.
She didn't like that.
She's always been
the stubborn one.
Always has to have
the last word.
So, Irene didn't want
to repay her debt?
No. She said it was the
last thing on her mind.
She had more important
things to think about.
Did she mention what?
Well, you're at her house, why
don't you ask her yourself?
She'll run her
mouth off for you.
[Craig] She's not here, Mom.
Her place has been ransacked.
The police are on their way.
Well, she's always
home at night.
So, where is she?
Well, that's what we're
hoping to find out for you.
She's okay, though, right?
We're looking into it, Mom.
So...
What are your thoughts on Craig?
Don't go getting a crush
on a potential suspect!
It's just that,
Irene had mentioned
that she wanted to set
me up with her nephew.
So, she must have thought
he was a good person.
And a good match for you.
Okay, so here's what we know.
Irene and her sister have a
pretty strained relationship,
but I don't know, Craig and his
mom don't seem like the type
that would do anything
to Irene for $45,000.
I mean, it's not
that big of a payout.
But, Edgar Salmon lost $300,000
when Irene beat him on Pun Hero.
Uh huh. And he sent her
this threatening letter.
Sounds like a sore loser.
Well, I'm going to find out.
[John] Okay, I think
I got it all now.
But please tell me you
didn't just break and enter.
No, we did not break and
enter, okay. We have a key.
Okay. Got it. So now
we have a crime scene.
Yeah. Missing persons
unit should take a look at
the letter from Edgar
Salmon on the table.
All right. We'll need
a statement from you.
Of course. I'll come
down to the station.
Thanks, John.
[John] See you.
Margret, did Irene happen to
mention any of the stories that
she was working on
before she disappeared?
That's the thing.
No one knows.
[Margret] Irene
was very careful.
She had secret sources,
off the record chats.
She kept all of her information
locked down until she had all
of her ducks in a row and was
ready to publish an article.
What about her records?
I mean, her computer?
She always kept it with her.
If it's not here,
it's missing too.
Hello.
Edgar Salmon, thanks
for coming in today.
Of course, of course.
Let's hope this doesn't
take too long, though.
I've got a very
important meeting
with a very big
Hollywood producer. So.
Do you know why I asked
you to come in today?
Of course. The
police need my help.
Probably have a lot of questions
about my record breaking,
star making winning streak on
America's favorite game show.
Hmmm.
Does Irene March ring a bell?
Unfortunately.
Now, um, what is your
relationship with her?
[Edgar] Non-existent.
When did you last see her?
Wednesday. She marched
out of the studio.
You know, Irene's been
missing for four days.
Well, hopefully she's
drowning in all the money
she stole from me.
You know what? I
don't need to be here.
I came in voluntarily, so...
[John] We appreciate you coming.
Wow! Edgar Salmon?
The Edgar Salmon?
In the flesh.
Wow! I'm such a huge fan.
Do you think I can get a selfie?
Of course! You're so sweet.
Great.
Perfect. Thank you.
You're welcome. Now remember
to tag and follow me
when you post that.
Oh! You know I will!
I have to say, though,
I was really disappointed
that you didn't win.
I mean, I thought
you deserved it.
You're telling me.
I was the punniest.
That show was rigged for Irene!
Rigged? How do you
think they did it?
Well, those small town
producers, they didn't want to
pay me the money that
I was going to win.
So they lobbed Irene all
these softball questions.
Probably gave her some
of the answers too.
You might want to...
So you sent her a
threatening letter?
I left that letter
after the show.
And she was no threat.
Her wordplay was subpar.
Why are using her name
in the past tense?
Because she's dead
to me! In the past.
Some big Hollywood producer,
they bought the rights
to Pun Hero and
they're going to make a
celebrity all-star version
with moi as the star.
Wow! That's incredible!
Do you think I could get
your autograph then too?
Absolutely.
I promise I'll keep it until
you're, like, way super famous.
Well, that won't be long.
Certainly they'd want
Irene's involvement too?
[Edgar] We'll see about that.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I
have a very important meeting
with a big time...
Hollywood producer!
[Edgar] That's right.
[John] Good luck with that.
Oh, I don't need
luck, Detective.
I'm Edgar Salmon.
Bye.
Wow!
[phone rings]
This is my Captain.
Oh, yeah yeah.
[John] Captain Pogue, sir.
Yes, what can I do for you?
Sir, yes sir, I understand.
Irene March's case is being
handled by missing person unit,
but someone needed to
talk with Edgar Salmon.
I mean, he clearly has
a grudge against her.
[John] Yes sir.
Irene March is not my case.
Irene March is not my case.
Sorry.
[Jane] Congratulations Edgar,
you've just moved up to
the number one suspect!
[Sadie] Exciting!
What pushed him to the top?
And don't forget Ida had
motive with that debt.
Right, but the way that
Edgar talked about Irene
in the past tense and
with such disdain,
I mean, there's something
very strange going on there.
Plus I've looked
into Ida and Craig,
and both their
records are clear.
[phone alert]
Sadie, I've got to turn
these notifications off.
I've gotten 37 in the last hour.
I appreciate you setting up
this social media campaign,
but I just don't think that...
What? What is it?
[Jane reads] Irene got what
she deserved and you will too.
[Jane] It could just be
some empty threat, you know.
Some troll who likes
to say mean things
behind the safety
of their screen.
Irene's case is high profile.
The media have picked up on it
and it's all over the place.
The deeper you get the
more visible you'll be.
You could be a target now too.
Okay. I'll talk to John,
but I'm not backing out now.
Hey...
Do you think maybe you
can trace the person
that sent the message?
I'll do my best, but don't
forget to talk to John.
Yeah. I know, Sadie, I know.
Plus I still have a ton
of prep to do for the Gala
and these centerpieces
may just be the end of me.
I'm so sorry I haven't
been here more.
How's everything going?
Harold is inspiring me
but I must admit to feeling
a little overwhelmed.
Thank goodness for
the events team.
I mean, they're working wonders.
I promise this is all going
to pay off soon, Sadie.
If I could just get this
seating chart figured out,
it'll deserve its
own press release.
Oh! Did you notice if Irene
purchased a ticket to the Gala?
Not that I know
of. Why do you ask?
I just saw the press
release on her desk,
thought it was a coincidence.
Well, I'm glad to hear
that it was delivered
to the news outlets.
I mean, ticket sales have been
nowhere near what I anticipated.
I was starting to wonder if
I'd forgotten to send it out!
Sadie, you're building
a wonderful event, okay.
Have faith. People will come.
All right. Now
let's attack this.
Uh huh.
Oh, John! Fancy
meeting you here.
Are you borrowing a
scarf from Sadie, too?
Very funny. But no.
Sadie actually had these
clothes sent over for me.
She's insisting I look
good for the Gala.
I'd say mission accomplished!
That suit looks...
Looks good, yeah.
But?
Ah, but, it's a little boring?
But we could try
something like a tux, huh?
Don't let me guess.
Sadie sent you here to make
sure I dressed myself properly.
No. Sadie sent me here to
give you some fashion advice,
which is exactly what I'm doing.
But what I really need
from you is some good news.
Any updates on the case?
Well, Edgar is firmly on the
missing persons unit's
suspect list now.
Oh, okay. That's good.
Anything else?
[John] Nothing I can share
with you, I'm afraid.
Right.
Yeah, I'm sorry about that.
I hope I didn't get
you in too much trouble
for helping me
out earlier today.
No, nothing to be sorry about.
I'm a police
officer. It's my job.
I'm here to help Irene.
But unfortunately, I was
told not to further interfere
on a case that's
not in my division.
Oh, that makes sense.
Fortunately, I looked
into her records
before I was told
to not overstep.
Yes!
Did you find anything good?
Yeah. She received several
incoming phone calls from an
unregistered number about a
week before her disappearance.
Unregistered number...
Someone's trying
to hide something.
Yeah, maybe, but I don't
think from who you think.
Irene's bank account
received a $150,000 deposit
the day the game
show host was taped.
Wow. That's, that's
a lot of money.
[John] Yeah, it
is a lot of money.
Especially for a journalist
in a declining profession.
Yeah, it's way more
than her prize money.
Do you think it
could be hush money?
[John] Yeah, it could be.
But who would want
to keep Irene quiet?
I don't know, but Margret is
going to look at some people
that might still
be holding grudges.
I'll check in with her today see
if she's turned up anything yet.
All right. How's
this for boring?
Oh!
No, that's not boring at all.
Do I look okay?
Yeah, yeah. You
look, you look nice.
Nice?
You know what I mean.
Do I?
I think, um, I think
this is the one.
Yeah, me too.
[phone notification]
Oh, um, that's
Margret. I should go.
But...
You look really good.
Why thank you.
[Chet] I can't believe it!
Did you see what she did there?
With her response pancake
Irene March flattened
the competition and
has taken the win!
[applause, cheering]
[Chet] I'm sorry, Edgar.
That means your
dough will not rise.
You won't be taking home
the grand cash prize.
[Chet] Tell us, Irene, what
will you do with your winnings?
Chet, I feel like I'm in
the land of milk and money.
It'll help me to use
words to reveal injustice
and work on stories of
great importance. Wow!
[applause]
That's an odd thing to
say, don't you think?
I mean, I wonder what
Irene meant by that?
She almost seems defiant.
Like she's gathering
all of her energy,
getting ready for a fight.
Yeah. Or like she's
sending someone a message.
But who?
And what's the message?
I mean, there's
definitely something
between the lines there.
Irene always wanted to
start her own justice column
to expose inequities
without anyone to edit her.
She wanted to say it all
and say it her own way.
Maybe that's what she
was planning to do.
[Craig] I need to see
Margret Olsen! Now!
It's important.
Oh, Margret! Jane!
Is that Craig?
It's okay, he's with me.
Hey.
She texted me!
What?
I got a text from Irene
about fifteen minutes ago.
Well, what did she say?
She didn't say
where she is, but...
She said, Hi Craig. Thanks
for checking in with me.
I'm fine and just laying low for
a few days until tempers cool.
Tempers cool?
At least she's okay.
Something doesn't feel
right. She calls me Craig.
Well, that is your name.
Aunt Irene has never called
me Craig in her entire life.
Always Curly.
Irene's either in danger
and sending me a code,
or it's not her texting.
What do we do?
Well, Irene didn't
say where she is,
but it got me thinking about
the phone tracking app.
I never thought to check because
Irene would never leave
something like that on.
She's far too careful for that.
Right. But I
checked and it's on.
She must have known she
was headed into danger.
Well, where is she?
The GPS shows the
phone's location
is at a downtown address.
Thats the game show studio!
Call John.
Thirsty this morning, huh?
Uh huh.
[phone rings]
Hi Jane.
Hey.
One second, okay?
Uh huh.
Jane, look, I'm sorry. I
was asked to stand down.
I can't overstep on an
active missing persons case.
Well, it might not be a missing
persons case much longer.
We've located Irene.
Really? That's great.
Where's she been?
I'm headed to the Pun Hero
studio right now to find out.
The studio?
Okay. Look, stay
alert. Keep me updated.
And make sure and tell the
missing persons unit too. Okay?
Will do.
Okay, I'm ready.
We are too.
I found the floor plans of
the Pun Hero studio online.
So we should be able to
guide you through the space
pretty easily.
First things first,
you've got to get inside.
Gotcha.
We'll be here, right in
your ear when you need us.
[Jane] Okay.
So, ah, looks like we've
have a ticket entrance
for the general public, but
security is kind of lax.
We, oh. Never mind.
We have a guard.
We're going to
need another plan.
Maybe ask if the
guard has seen Irene?
Hi!
I'm here to meet a friend
of mine, Irene March.
She was a contestant
on the show last week.
Look familiar?
Okay, ah, well, she
told me to meet her here
so can I just pop backstage
real quick and look around?
Look, I hate to do this, but my
sick and dying grandmother is a
Right...
Okay, well, thank you so much.
You're great at your job.
That's not going to work.
I'll head back, away
from Mr. Charisma here.
[they both chuckle]
Okay, okay, I didn't feel
great about that last untruth,
but it didn't work, so no harm.
You're a legend! Don't
stress. We've got your back.
The backstage door should
be a couple of yards ahead.
[Jane] Okay.
Okay, I'm in. It's clear.
Yes! Nice work!
Where to now?
Okay, so you're
backstage of the studio.
Dressing rooms are on your left,
hair and makeup
are straight ahead.
[Margret] What are
you seeing, Jane?
Not what we're looking for.
Okay, let's the try the
hair and makeup room.
It should be the next room over.
[gasps]
[Margret] Jane! What is it?
It's just a
mannequin. It's fine.
[loud noise]
I'm supposed to be here.
[big sigh]
Jane?
That was close.
Don't worry. Let's keep moving.
There is no sign of
Irene anywhere backstage.
[Craig] Straight ahead should
be a door to the soundstage.
Okay.
She's got to be here somewhere.
Irene!
Irene!
Are you sure that the
phone is at this address?
Yes! Keep looking.
Hi! Remember me?
The selfie for sick grandma...
Okay, for the record
the door was open.
I did not break or enter.
Well, I mean I entered but
I didn't break anything.
[together] Ugh!
[Margret] You were so close!
Well, at least the security
guard was nice enough to just
give me a warning.
But we still don't
have Irene's phone.
[Jane] It's got to be
in the main studio.
And that's the only place I
didn't get to fully check!
[police sirens]
Oh wow. That sure
sounds intense.
[police sirens]
Yeah, it looks like it too.
[Jane] They're pulling
into the studio.
I'm going to check it out.
Oh no.
Jane?
[message notification]
[big exhale of breath]
What is it?
It's John.
They've found a body.
[indistinct conversation]
Can I take a look
at this, please?
Oh man...
My source said the cleaner found
a woman's body in the dumpster.
Yeah. Yeah, I heard that too.
I'm just hoping it's not her.
If it is Irene, it
will be such a loss.
She's one of the
good ones. The best.
Don't worry. If it's a
homicide, the police will be
doubly motivated
by public pressure
to find whoever did this to her.
And I'll be sure
to keep this story
on the front page until they do.
I just, I wish we knew if
it was her or not, you know.
I don't know what to.
Stay here and wait
or keep looking.
This is impossible!
Jane, forgive me, but I've
always gotten the feeling that
you haven't been totally
forthcoming with me.
If you have any information
that could help Irene,
it's best not to
keep it to yourself.
Call me anytime.
I'd love to hear your
perspective on things.
Off the record, of course.
So, was everything before
this on the record?
I'm afraid it's
confirmed. It's Irene.
We were so close.
I mean, why couldn't we
have found her sooner?
Don't be hard on yourself.
I've got to tell
Margret. And Craig.
And I've got a story to file.
Her body should be on the way
to the medical examiner by now.
[sobbing] I can't believe this.
This isn't right.
She was a force of nature,
loved by so many people.
I know.
Through her articles she helped
people she never even met.
If this could happen to her,
it could happen to
me, you, any of us.
Well, let's not think
like that right now, okay?
What do we do now?
Can anything we found
out help the case?
Well, ah, officers are
at the scene right now
combing for any clues.
John ordered an autopsy.
Sadly all we can
do is just wait.
Oh no. I have to call my mom.
She's going to be devastated.
I'll drive you home.
You shouldn't be alone.
Oh... What about Perry?
He shouldn't be alone
any longer either.
I mean, parrots
are social birds...
Don't worry about
that. It's okay.
I'll get Perry. I'll
take care of him.
You two take care of each other.
Try to get some rest.
We'll know more soon.
[Perry] Peek-a-boo!
Peek-a-boo! Squawk!
Perry, I'm not in the
mood to play games, okay.
[Perry] Play games!
Play games! Squawk!
[Jane chuckles]
Perry the parrot...
Something tells me
you're going to be
an interesting roommate.
[Jane] Oh!
[Perry] I see you! I see you!
I see you!
Huh.
Well.
The police and the
intruder missed this
and that's their loss.
[Perry] I see you! I see you!
Shhh! I'm going to put it back
when I'm done with it. Relax.
Come on.
[Perry] I see you! I see you!
Enough out of you, Perry.
[Perry squawks] I
see you! I see you!
1-1-1-1.
1-2-3-4.
Ahh!
[Perry] Ahhhh!
[squawks and whistles]
Do you have any
helpful suggestions?
Peek-a-boo! Peek-a-boo! Squawk!
I'm done with the
games right now, Perry!
Ah. I thought I'd find
the coffee pot in here.
Oh, you look frazzled.
Anything I can help with?
Yes, please. Do you want
to take a lucky guess
at Irene's computer password?
You stole a computer
from a dead woman?
No! I just borrowed it!
I figured while the police are
figuring out how Irene died,
I can try and look into what
trouble she got mixed up with.
If I could ever figure
out this stupid password!
[Perry] Ahhhh! [whistles]
What's this guy's name?
[Perry squawks]
People often use pet names.
Oh, yeah! That's good thinking!
Urgh!
Peek a boo! Peek a boo! Squawk!
[laughs] He's hilarious.
He's infuriating.
I am so close, I
can feel it, Sadie.
I don't think Irene would
have hidden this computer
unless there was something
really, really important on it.
[Perry squawks]
[message notification]
Are you still getting
those notifications?
No. No, this one's from John.
He said that the preliminary
exam is almost done
at the morgue.
He wants me to meet
him down there.
Ugh...
Suddenly banging my
head against a wall
guessing computer passwords
all night doesn't seem so bad.
Not all is lost, my dear.
Sometimes a dead end can
turn you back in a direction
where you missed something
important the first time around.
Oh, by the by...
I wasn't able to find out
who posted that online threat
to you, but it's clearly
from a fake account.
Look. The profile uses a picture
stolen from another account,
and has no friend connections.
I mean, it likely exists
just to troll accounts
and make cowardly
online threats.
What is wrong with people?
Don't they have anything
better to do with their time?
Apparently not.
They also viewed stories
I posted about the Gala.
I mean, thankfully they
didn't write anything nasty
in the comments.
They're certainly nosing
about where they shouldn't be.
Thanks for looking
into that, though.
Happy to help.
Now I really do need to
get back to the Gala.
I have only a few days left and
many, many doors to knock on.
Still?
I have no choice!
People who said they'd happily
pledge donations haven't yet.
Maybe they just
need to be reminded?
I hate bothering people, but I
will knock on every door I have
to to raise the money I promised
the Children's Hospital.
Well, good luck Sadie.
Right back at you.
[Perry] Back attcha! Squawk!
Sadie, what's wrong?
[sobbing] It's all such a
mess! And it's all my fault.
What happened?
I just got an earful
from our biggest donor.
At least she was our
biggest donor last year.
She said she bought tickets and
that she made a healthy donation
and that I didn't even have the
courtesy to acknowledge her.
But I didn't receive
anything from her.
I would have remembered
her donation.
I've been refreshing
the page all the time.
How did that happen?
I have no idea!
I personally thank
everyone who supports us,
no matter what size
their donation.
Somehow my numbers are way off.
You know how technology is,
I'm sure it's just a glitch.
A glitch!
She's accusing me of
mishandling the money.
You? Fraud?
That's crazy.
What if the same problem
happened to my other donors?
You know what, Sadie.
We are going to look
into this together, okay.
And we are going to figure
out where the money went.
Yes but how can the
money be missing?
[Sadie sniffles]
It's too late.
[Sadie sniffles]
I'll have to cancel the Gala!
And we'll loose
all the deposits.
[Sadie sobs]
I'll donate the remaining
budget to the hospital.
It's the best I can do now.
Sadie, I'm so sorry.
I should have been here more.
It's okay. I just
want to be alone.
Are you sure you don't
want to wait outside?
No I'm okay. It's just
the last time I was
here was to ID my mom.
It was not a great day.
I'm sorry.
Like, you don't
have to stay, okay.
No, really, I'm okay.
If we could just talk
about anything else.
All right.
Did you hear about the
guy who had an accident
at the upholstery factory?
No! What happened?
Don't worry, he recovered.
[Jane laughs]
Wow!
That, that was terrible!
I know!
But also perfect. Thank you.
Hey, my pleasure.
Lots more where that came from.
Well, why don't you just
keep those holstered for now.
Okay. For now.
[they both chuckle]
Hey, I was thinking since
we're both going to the Gala,
do you want to...
Maybe go together?
Is this you trying
to distract me,
or are you actually
asking me out on a date?
I'd say a little of both.
Well, ah, I'd love to.
But unfortunately Sadie's
having to cancel the Gala.
Oh no. Why?
I mean, she put so much
time and effort into it.
I know.
She's got some issues to
work out with the donors.
But you could ask me out
on a date again sometime.
Maybe when we're
not in a morgue.
You got it.
[door opens and closes]
John! I was hoping not
to see you again so soon.
Same.
You know, I'd love not too
see you at least a week, Zach.
Yeah, worst part of my job!
[they both chuckle]
Zach, this is Jane.
She's Harold's successor at the
Foundation for Righting Wrongs.
I see they've got you partnered
with this guy over here, huh.
Yeah, it's the worst
part of my job.
[Zach laughs]
Zach and I met the day
he started working here.
I actually showed him
where those drawers where.
He's like the big brother
I never asked for.
And I can't seem
to get rid of him.
Lucky you.
All right. Let's
get this over with
so we can get all some
closure here. Okay?
Okay, Irene March...
Well, I'm sorry to report,
but it looks like we've
have a homicide here.
Cause of death - excessive
blood loss due to
multiple gunshot
wounds to the chest.
So she was shot?
Yeah. Multiple times,
at close range.
[Zach] Which leads me to believe
that she knew the killer.
Yeah, it seems personal.
[Zach] Yup. And the killer was
just as likely as tall as her.
I just... I can't stop thinking
about how awful that must be
to die alone in a dumpster.
Oh, well, she was
killed somewhere else
and then put in the dumpster.
We're still confirming
the location
of where she was
shot and bled out.
We're testing some
trace evidence
from the studio building.
Well, there were no
defensive wounds.
So, she died quickly,
didn't suffer.
What kind of timeline are
we looking at here, Zach?
Well, Irene had been dead
for at least five days
before she was found.
So, by my estimation, she
probably died Thursday.
Wait, so that means that
the killer texted Craig
from Irene's phone after
she was already dead?
Yeah. It's pretty
twisted, right?
That's beyond disturbing.
Well, I hate to leave you
both on such a happy note,
but, John, I emailed
you the report.
If you have any questions
just give me a call. Okay?
Will do. Thanks, Zach.
Why would someone bring Irene's
body back to the Pun Hero stage?
And why send a text from a phone
that's so easily traceable?
Well, someone wanted
Irene to be found.
I mean, you have to be pretty
cold blooded to shoot somebody
at point blank.
Yeah, well, whoever's behind
this is not playing around.
Listen, Jane...
Like, I'm sorry, but I just,
I have to ask you to...
What, to step back?
John, come on. You know
I'm not doing that.
Look, it's not safe.
The police are on it
and I'm on it. So...
Don't you trust that I
know what I'm doing by now?
I trust you! I don't trust
some sociopath who sends texts
from a dead person's phone.
Are we seriously having
an argument right now
after we just agreed
to go on a second date?
Is it so bad that I
want you to be safe
so that we can actually
go on a second date?
No! I want to be safe!
Trust me, I'd love to be safe so
I can go on many dates with you!
- Well, great!
- Great!
Okay, fine. Fine.
I'll go to the Foundation office
and I'll go do
some computer work.
Are you happy?
Yes, that would be great.
Great.
But you need to
keep me in the loop!
[Sophie] You should be
keeping all the news outlets
in the loop as well John.
Sophie, you're not
supposed to be here.
I'm here for Irene.
Someone is trying to
silence the truth tellers
and I won't let that happen.
Irene's story
deserves to be told.
That's admirable Sophie, but...
Please, John, just a soundbite
on any leads the
police are following.
No! I'm not available
for comment. Sorry.
That's too bad.
You know this relationship
could work both ways.
Sophie, if you have
any information
that can help us track
down Irene's killer...
You know I can't
reveal my sources.
Hmm.
I assume you fully understand
obstruction of justice?
Fine.
I have a source who confided
that Irene was going to meet
with Edgar Salmon at the studio
the night she disappeared.
Well, thank you Sophie.
I'll check into it.
And I get to ask
the first question
at the next press conference?
Sure.
Call me.
She's so annoying.
But she could
prove to be useful.
I mean, she seems pretty
committed to getting answers.
She seems like a bulldog.
Never mind her.
All clues are pointing
back to Edgar Salmon.
It looks like maybe it's
time to bring him in
as an official suspect.
All right, I'll do that.
Okay. But keep me in the loop.
I will.
[Margret] Hi Jane.
Hey, I thought I called Craig.
You did.
Craig is helping Ida take
the chicken out of the oven.
Craig!
[Margret] Jane's on
the phone for you.
You're at Ida's house?
Yeah. Craig wants to
be here for his mom.
And Irene did mention she
that she wanted to set
Craig and I up, so we
thought we'd honor her wishes
by getting to know each
other better a bit better.
Aw. That's lovely.
Here.
Hey Jane. Did
something come up?
Hey, yes, so I found
Irene's computer,
but I need help cracking
the password to get in.
Do you have any ideas?
Did you try Perry's name?
I tried the bird's name,
I tried your nickname,
wordplay, obvious
number combinations.
Nothing.
[Ida] Your guess
is as good as mine.
She would have gone
for something clever.
Something so obvious no
one would ever guess.
Yeah. I'm beginning
to feel that way.
Hey, remember that
scavenger hunt
she made for my 10th birthday?
The answer for the clue I
couldn't solve ended up being on
the back of the instruction
sheet the whole time.
It took you ages
to figure that out!
[they both chuckle]
[Ida] Yeah, she always
loved her games.
You know what?
Craig, you don't need to be
worrying about this right now.
Okay?
You all go and
enjoy your dinner.
Say a cheers to Irene for me.
[Craig] Thanks, Jane.
Okay bye.
Okay. Something obvious that
no one would ever guess...
Password?
[Perry] Password!
Password! Squawk!
Perry, I don't want to
play games right now, okay.
Wait. Are you
playing a game or...
Peek-a-boo! I see you!
Squawk! [whistles]
[gasps] Yes!
Oh no...
[Jane] Sadie!
You're awfully perky.
No time for wallowing, okay.
I need you to hear this.
Irene was investigating
someone named Angela.
She was setting up fake fund-me
accounts for phony charity
events and then collecting
the money for herself.
That's horrendous!
It gets worse.
I recognized one of the people
that she was raising money for.
Amelia?
[Sadie] John's niece?
Yeah. This is the same
photo that you have up on
the Children's Hospital
Gala event page.
Well, anyone can easily
download it. I mean...
What awful person would
use it for their own gain?
Do you remember
that fake account
that was nosing
around your socials?
The troll?
Uh huh.
You don't think...
I do.
I think Angela sent me
the threatening message
and then she hijacked your Gala.
That's why you haven't
been getting the numbers
you expected.
The donors are being
siphoned to a bogus site.
Uh huh.
Irene had detailed notes on
the whole scam, the perpetrator
and these innocent families that
have no idea that their photo
and their stories
are being used.
Irene knew about this?
[Jane] Uh huh.
Why wouldn't she come forward?
It looked like she was
getting ready to come forward
about the fraud,
but then she didn't.
There must have
been a good reason.
Maybe she was waiting
for a smoking gun?
Or, or maybe Irene wasn't who
we thought she was at all.
John told me that on
the day she disappeared
there was a $150,000 deposit
into her bank account.
That's a lot more than
she won on the game show.
Yeah, a lot more.
Was it hush money?
Irene's computer
had files with dirt
on all sorts of people
for all manner of things.
I mean, maybe, maybe she
was blackmailing them.
Well, that could certainly
get her into trouble.
But stealing from sick children?
I mean, that's lower than low.
Yeah.
And it doesn't fit with what
we know to be true about Irene.
Her journalism was the
height of integrity.
Unless she had everyone fooled.
She could be less than
innocent in all of this.
That's definitely possible.
Now we can't jump
to conclusions.
You know, I think it's time
I did a little research
on Angela of my own.
Well, you'll be on her radar and
if Angela's capable of murder,
you need to keep a low profile.
What about this?
It's a little on the
nose, don't you think,
for an undercover job, ?
It's a cape! It's
very classic.
Fashion meets function.
Tons of non-detective
types wear them these days.
Yes, very 1930's detectives
from old black and white movies.
Exactly.
Next you'll be
wanting one of those
tweed caps with the ear flaps.
Ooh, a deerstalker!
Tell me Uncle Harold had one.
You're going on a stakeout,
not trick-or-treating,
Sherlock Holmes.
Fine.
All right, Ms. Angela Dandee.
Let's see what you're up to.
You understand how this
looks, don't you Edgar?
I don't care how.
It's the truth!
I didn't do anything to Irene.
I never even saw her
outside of taping the show.
You have no alibi.
I told you, I was
at the lookout.
Do you not write this down?
Where no one saw
you or your car.
[John] No one can
confirm your whereabouts
when Irene was murdered.
That is not my fault!
Call the producer for
Celebrity Pun Hero. Okay?
She's the one who told me to
be at the lookout that night!
Well, actually, we've been
trying to locate a producer
named Laura Wasserman.
Apparently she doesn't exist.
Oh, so because she didn't
show up, she doesn't exist.
I don't think so, Detective.
You know, the number you gave us
was a local unregistered number.
No other producer on Pun Hero
knows anything about a spinoff.
And no other contestant
was contacted about
an all-star episode.
Clearly, I was the first call!
Do you know who I am?
There is no Celebrity
Pun Hero without me.
No.
There is no celebrity
all-star Pun Hero, period.
Why would I lie?
I'm not a murderer. I
wouldn't hurt a fly.
I don't know Edgar,
but it's not adding up!
You said Pun Hero cheated you.
So why would you agree
to be in a spinoff?
I'm a punny guy, Detective.
I'm a, I'm a middle
aged punny man.
And I liked being on television.
I like being a somebody.
Most of my life I felt invisible
and I liked being recognized,
people cheering
for me, liking me.
Is that so bad?
No.
That's the first thing you've
said that I actually believe.
[Jane] Where are you Angela?
[phone rings]
Oh, hey John!
[John] Is now a bad time?
No, no! I'm just...
At the office, doing some...
Some computer work
like we talked about.
Well, I just finished
up with Edgar Salmon.
He has motive, and definitely
some holes in his story, but
my gut says no.
Really?
Sure, he's an arrogant
nerd, but a killer...
No.
Okay, then I guess we keep our
eye out for other suspects.
[John] So is the
Gala really canceled?
Yeah, yeah. Sadie
is just devastated.
What happened?
Can I talk to her?
You know, now is
not a great time.
She's resting and kind of
wants to be by herself.
But there are some
things about the Gala
that I need to tell you.
All right. What's up?
I'm going to send you some
documents from Irene's computer.
I need you to take
a look them and then
I'm going to call
you later. Okay?
[John] Okay.
Okay.
Oh! Oh! My coffee spilled!
I gotta go! Okay, bye.
Sophie's in on it!
What's this?
Your smoking gun!
Look, I asked you
to stay out of this.
I stayed out of your
investigation, all right.
This has to do with mine.
Okay. What do you
think you've uncovered?
Did you look at the
documents I sent you
from Irene's computer?
Yes, and I sent some
officers over to
pick up Angela Dandee right now.
Well, I don't think that
Angela's the mastermind
behind all this.
Then who?
Sophie.
Sophie Flores?
Uh huh. Yeah.
I think she's been pulling
the strings the whole time.
That is, that is
a big accusation.
Well, I saw Sophie slip
this envelope to Angela.
And you have it... how?
It fell out of Angela's purse.
Um hmm.
Look, Sophie is not digging
around about Irene's murder
trying to find a news story.
She's digging around
because she's trying to
stay ahead of the investigation.
Yeah, but why kill Irene
in the first place?
I mean, Sophie wasn't mentioned
in the coverage of the scandal.
It might have been
news to Irene too.
Maybe there was a confrontation.
So killing Irene meant Sophie's
involvement in the Gala scam
would remain unknown.
Uh hmmm. And Sophie's
name still stays
on all the top news stories
covering Irene's murder.
Huh! Well, I am impressed
you put this together.
But we still need proof that
Sophie was tied into the scheme.
Well, I sent Sophie a
message and said there's been
some big developments that
we need to chat about.
Okay, but you can't
confront Sophie.
I mean, you just told me
that may be the reason
Irene was murdered.
Well, I'm meeting with
her in 30 minutes, John,
whether you help or not.
But I could really
use the assist.
Okay, what do you need?
Well, I'm thinking of using
one of Irene's tactics
to catch Sophie in the act.
I'm going to wear a wire.
I could be the one
to wear the wire.
No. She would never
confess to the police.
Sophie gave me her card.
She wants to talk to me!
Come on, John.
We're wasting time.
By the time your officers
go pick up Angela,
Sophie is going to
know something is up.
Okay.
Turn around.
[John] Okay, I'll need
a code word for you
to let me know if you need out.
How about doughnut?
Are you Sophie doesn't
suspect anything?
I mean, she's smart.
I'm sure she's done a
little research on me.
But I've you and
Margret on my side.
All I have to do is
stay one step ahead.
Okay. Look, you won't be
able to hear anything,
but I'll be listening
to you all the time.
And if you need anything,
I'll be there ASAP.
Okay. Doughnut.
Promise me you won't
come until you hear it.
And promise me
you'll be careful.
I'll do my best.
Okay.
Oh wow! Look at the time!
I'm going to be
late for my date.
[Sophie] Date?
Wow, things are moving fast
between you and Irene's nephew.
I know. I never would
have expected it,
but being with Craig
just feels right.
Romance that springs
from tragedy.
There's a great story there.
Are you working late tonight?
News never sleeps. There's
a killer on the loose.
Somebody's got to get
to the bottom of it.
Did you want me to
lock up on my way out?
- No, I'll do it.
- Okay.
- Have a great date!
- Thanks.
[Sophie] Well, Irene. I
suppose this is my office now.
[Jane] Okay, John.
Can you hear me?
That's right.
You can't answer.
Okay, I just want to say,
this is absolutely terrifying
and I highly regret forcing
you to let me do this.
It's going to be okay.
It's like stage fright.
I'll be fine.
Hey Sophie?
Jane! There you are.
So glad we're finally
getting a chance to chat.
Yeah. I'm sorry, I'm
not much of a hugger.
Feel free to have a
seat, if you'd like.
I'm good. Thanks.
So, you and I both
want the same thing.
So it only makes sense
that we work together
to find Irene's killer.
I agree.
So why did you want to meet
tonight? What's the scoop?
Well, uh...
It's about Edgar.
Are they going to charge him?
It's looking like it.
He's suspect number one.
The evidence is
piling up against him.
Wow. What do they have on him?
Well, he lost $300,000
to her, publicly.
And then he sent her
that threatening letter.
And your source said that Irene
was supposed to be meeting
with Edgar before
she disappeared.
But, you know, it's really
interesting, though,
the one thing that doesn't
line up is his alibi.
Because on Saturday night
he said he was with you.
Me? Well, that's a lie.
I was meeting with my
source on Saturday night.
Really? Who is this
secret source of yours?
I can't disclose that.
It's for their safety.
But clearly Edgar is lying.
Someone is.
Did Irene ever mention
a charity event
at the Children's
Hospital to you?
[Sophie] No, nothing.
That's odd because her computer
was full of documents detailing
your relationship
with Angela Dandee
and your involvement in the
Children's Hospital scam.
That's impossible.
You're crazy.
No. You know what's crazy?
Edgar didn't kill
Irene. You did.
[scoffs] Wow, Jane,
you're very creative.
Write that one
yourself, did you?
You murdered Irene because
she found out about
your involvement in the
Children's Hospital scam.
And then, you set up Edgar,
who was the perfect suspect
with built in motive.
Thanks for thinking of me
Jane, but I can't take credit
for that fantastical
story you just made up.
You are a crime writer who
created the perfect crime.
You're the one who isn't
who they say they are, Jane!
You're not Irene's
friend, you're just some
amateur detective wannabe.
And you're obsessed with me and
you're manipulating
Detective Cameron.
And you're making some
serious allegations here.
I have a source who
says you killed Irene.
Enough with your
sources, Sophie.
We all know it's a
lie! Just give it up!
Jane, what are you doing?
Stand back.
[Sophie] Put the knife away!
No! Noooo!
[smashes]
[static]
Your detective
can't save you now.
Well, he already
heard everything.
He heard you accuse me
of a crime with no proof
and then attack me with a knife.
But he won't be hearing
anything else from you.
[Sophie] Because I had to
kill you in self defense.
So. The farce is up, Jane.
You're about to become
the news story now
and I'll print the exclusive!
Okay, okay! All
right! You're right.
You got me.
I'm, I'm just an
amateur detective
and I have no idea
what I'm doing.
I don't even know
how I got this far.
How I pieced all of it together.
But, just humor me,
okay? Just one question.
Irene had $150,000 deposited
into her bank account
when she disappeared.
Was she blackmailing
you or was she in on it?
Irene was a liar! She
didn't want the money.
She pretended to work
alongside Angela,
but she was only
collecting evidence.
When she discovered
my involvement,
she agreed to take the $150K
to keep quiet about it all,
but then she used the money
as proof of the scheme
and to expose me.
I knew the second she said that
junk about the power of words
on the game show that
she'd turn on us.
She wasn't going to keep
quiet like she said she would.
Doughnut!
What?
[gun shot]
[gun shot]
[struggling]
Nice work!
Thanks.
Hands behind your back here.
You know, we got your friend
Angela in handcuffs too.
Yeah, you always got to
stay one step ahead, Sophie.
Come on. Let's go.
Jane! Thank goodness
you're okay.
[Craig] How are you feeling?
Well, a little tired
but mostly relieved.
I think the police have
a really strong case
against Angela and Sophie
thanks to Sophie's confession
and Irene's detailed notes.
In the end, Irene won.
She always got the last word.
Yeah.
Well, again, I'm so sorry
for your loss, Craig.
Please give my
regards to your mom.
At least we know the
truth about what happened
and she can grieve for
her sister in peace now.
Yeah. Well, I hope you
all get some time to
find some peace and heal.
I know it's what Irene
would have wanted.
Thank you for finding
us some answers.
Of course.
And you can rest assured,
Irene was a whistleblower
not a blackmailer.
She had a strong moral
compass and was just
investigating the investigators.
With my portion of
the inheritance,
we're going to develop a new
digital newsfeed devoted to
exposing those who exploit
others and serving justice.
Just like Irene
had always wanted.
We?
Irene brought Craig
and I together,
so we're going to build the
network and run it as partners.
Well, it sounds like Irene is
leaving behind quite the legacy.
Oh. I brought some
treats for Perry.
Thanks. He's going
to love them.
He's settled in at my mom's.
She says Perry is
quite the good company.
Oh. This is for Sadie.
A check for the
Children's Hospital.
Once I reported about the
Hospital charity scandal people
across the city reached out and
donations started flooding in.
Wow. Thank you.
I guess there still is some good
news to report on in the world.
Thankfully, it's not
all trolls out there.
If you'll excuse me I have
a Gala I need to get to.
Although there has been
a slight change of venue.
See you later.
[upbeat music: "Star Up"
performed by Jodie Sweetin]
When the clouds turn gray
and raindrops start to fall
I tell myself today
I got to give my all
Coz today is the day that I
Put my star up in the sky
And ain't no rainstorm
going to tell me otherwise
You're right, she is pretty.
Well, if you think she's pretty,
wait till you talk to her.
She's even more smart!
I knew it.
So my star is going fly
Gonna make you
wait up high
Say hello and say good bye
My darling
And I know that
every Jack and Jill
Has a star rolling
up that hill
Others keep it on
their windowsill
For passersby
I'll just put my
star up in the sky
I'll just put my
star up in the sky
- [song ends]
- [cheering and clapping]
[cheering and clapping]
Hey.
Oh, hey.
I was hoping to get a
moment alone with you.
- Oh really?
- Yeah.
When you were wearing the
mic pack the other night
you mentioned something about
wanting to reschedule our date?
Well, I figured with the
Gala canceled, you know...
Right. I don't think
we should reschedule.
Oh. Okay.
I think this is
the perfect date.
[they both chuckle]
I mean, for starters
you look incredible.
Thank you.
And with the kids I get
to see you be brilliant
in a whole different light.
You really go above and
beyond everything you do.
Yeah, it's too bad, I mean,
you've really set the bar
really high for yourself
for a second date.
Hmmm. Well, that is a
challenge I'm willing to take.
And I have to say you look
pretty nice yourself, you know.
That tux really,
ah, it suits you.
Come on. That was a great pun.
That was truly terrible. High
praise for a pun, though.
Indeed. And the night is young.
And what do you
say? You wanna...
Maybe clown around with
me for a little while?
How did you...
See. Always come prepared.
Oh, yeah.
Let's go.
[Performed by Jodie Sweetin]
Every day I wake up
then as I get dressed
I tell myself today I'm
going to try my best
Because today is the day that
I put my star up in the sky
So everybody can
see how I shine
And yesterday I couldn't reach
but now I caught some zees
So I string them
all together
Like a big circus trapeze
Then I'll swing
myself real high
Put my star up in the sky
So everybody can
see it every night
And I know that
every Jack and Jill
Has a rolling up a hill
Others keep it on
their windowsill
The passersby
Well I'll just put
my star up in the sky
Yeah I'll just put
my star up in the sky
[song ends]
[strums a few funny cords]
Dare I say we're ready
for the main stage
at the Crystal Crown?
Well, you know, it might be a
little bit different once we're
in a grand ballroom
performing in front of
like a thousand people.
You're right. We'll
be much better.
We should prepare an encore!
Ohhh, yes! Two encores.
Whatever it takes.
I want to put on such
an incredible show
that the donors can't
possibly resist making
ridiculously generous donations
to the Children's Hospital.
Well unfortunately,
at a charity event,
it's not about how
incredible the show is
it's about the donors showing
up for those who need it.
At least that's what
Harold used to say.
And he should know.
He threw the best charity
galas this town has ever seen!
I love how you're carrying on
Uncle Harold's
philanthropic work.
But I imagine doing all
this planning without him
must be a little hard.
Actually, it's a really
nice way to keep him close.
These kids and their families
face such heavy
uncertainty every day.
I mean, look at these faces.
How could anyone not
want to help these kids?
- [knocking at the door]
- [Sadie] Oh!
That'll be the journalist
from the Old City Times.
She reached out and
said she wanted to
create some buzz for the event.
That's great!
You go spread the good news
and I'll clean up in here.
Actually, she wanted
to interview you.
Me?
[Margret] Thanks again
for meeting with me.
Of course. We were hoping
to get word out about
the Children's Hospital
Gala however we can.
Please, make
yourself comfortable.
So, you've been running the
Foundation for Righting Wrongs
for a while now?
Yes, yeah.
And your Uncle Harold left
it to you after his passing?
Yeah, he did.
In fact, it was
Harold's altruism
that really inspired the Gala.
But you have no previous
experience in detective work?
No, actually my background is
in performance, singing, which
I will be doing this weekend at
the Children's Hospital Gala.
And you've already brought
justice to many cold cases,
right?
Right again. Yeah, you've
really done your research!
How does a singer with no
experience as an investigator
pull that off?
You know, I thought
this interview was about
the Children's Hospital Gala.
And I have a very busy
week getting all that done.
So if you would like to do an
interview about the Foundation,
we can schedule
that for next week.
I'm sorry but this can't wait!
Ms. Da Silva, please, I
really need your help.
My co-worker, she's
been missing...
Wait wait wait.
This whole interview was a ruse?
I had to talk to you.
I know you would
do the same thing
if you were in my situation.
Your undercover work
is kind of legendary.
You do anything for a case.
How do you know that?
I'm a journalist and
I've done my research.
I may be new, but I
know what I'm doing.
Jane, it has to be you.
You don't take no for an answer
and neither did my friend Irene.
I'm worried that it might have
gotten her into some trouble.
Well, if you needed
the Foundation's help,
why not just contact
the Foundation directly?
Go through the proper channels?
I did!
But this isn't a cold case,
it's a missing persons case.
And we need to find her, now!
Wait, so your friend
Irene is missing?
Completely disappeared!
Please, you need to
find her quickly.
We're all so worried about her.
She's your co-worker?
My mentor, Irene March,
investigative journalist
with the Old City Times.
Irene always shows up for work.
She prides herself on being
the woman who's always a
step ahead in the news room.
Well, it sounds like you
need to contact the police,
file a missing persons report.
I did. But they've
haven't been much help.
They went to her house
yesterday, did a wellness check.
When they saw that she wasn't
there and her car was gone,
with no signs of forced entry,
they said it didn't warrant
further investigation.
Why do you think I could help?
You've solved cases that
the police couldn't solve
in over 15 years!
Irene would call that gumption.
Thank you, Margret,
but I have so much to do
this week for the Gala.
Irene devoted her whole career
to breaking high profile cases
and exposing the bad guys.
She's been fighting
for other people
who can't fight for
themselves for years.
Now we need to fight for her.
She's a worthy cause too.
And I agree.
I just, I don't know that
I'm the person to help.
Please just hear me out.
Sure, I'll listen.
Here, why don't you explain
the situation to me?
She's been missing
for almost two days.
I saw her leave our office
building early Thursday morning.
I tried to congratulate
her on winning $100,000
on a TV game show the day
before but I couldn't catch up.
Do you think that winning all
that money had something to do
with her disappearance?
The first thing Irene taught
me in the newsroom is,
there are no coincidences.
- [John] Hey!
- [Jane] Donuts?
Oh! Not necessary,
but very welcome.
Well, I appreciate you
looking into a case
you're not assigned to.
Oh, well, lucky for
everyone there's no
homicide investigation
filling my day.
As long as I don't
step on any toes,
I'm sure the missing persons
unit could use the help.
All right. So,
what have we got?
Okay, well, the
wellness check here,
it indicates Irene
March lives alone.
Nothing really unusual,
no sign of break in.
Now they didn't gain access
to the interior of the house.
But a neighbor said Irene
mentioned wanting to go away
because she was
stressed from work.
Huh.
So then the question is why
disappear without a trace?
Uh huh.
Is there anything in there about
her appearance on a game show?
Yeah.
Yeah, she won some money on
a game show called Pun Hero.
Pun Hero?
Yeah, the game show about
puns. Do you ever watch it?
I can't really say
that puns are my thing.
You?
Oh yeah. I enjoy a good pun.
And so did Irene, apparently.
Her win on the show
was a really big deal.
She upset the current
champion, Edgar Salmon,
who lost almost $300,000.
Wow, that's a lot of money.
Whooo, wow.
Yeah, that sounds
like motive to me.
Motive? For what?
Hey, don't get ahead
of yourself here, okay.
There's no evidence of
foul play here at all.
Yeah, but can't an absence
of evidence be evidence?
Uh, well, yeah, I mean...
People who win large sums of
money like to sometimes lay low
because they just
want to get away
from people looking
for handouts.
Okay. That's plausible.
Or, you know, she could be
off vacationing for a week
enjoying her prize money.
We also can't forget Irene is
an investigative journalist.
She could have uncovered
something that put her at risk.
Yeah.
Or she could be researching
a story undercover.
I mean, anything is possible.
But the officer who put
this report together
doesn't think anything
nefarious happened at all.
So what, they're just going to
wait for her to turn back up?
I mean, a person is missing.
Shouldn't the police be
following every lead?
Yeah, I'm sure they are.
But Irene is an
adult in good health.
You know, it's plausible
she could be anywhere.
Most people in these cases
show up after a few days.
But you should know that
some of Irene's exposs
didn't paint the police
in a very good light.
Well, if the police aren't
doing their jobs I can see why
the Foundation is
inundated with requests.
Well, luckily they have you.
Us. They have us.
All right. Well, I'll let Sadie
know that we have a new case.
We'll find her.
I doughnut doubt it.
You've been holding onto that
one in for a while, haven't you?
Look, I'll look into
Irene's phone records
and bank records for you, okay.
Ah, well, for the
record, you're amazing.
I don't think that
was even a pun.
[John] We'll work on that.
Okay. All right.
I'll see you later.
[exciting game show music]
Welcome to the finale of
our game show Pun Hero!
The game that's pun-doubtedly
obsessed with wordplay.
I'm your host, Chet Filson.
[applause]
Welcome back, our
reigning champion,
Edgar Salmon.
Thank you, Chet.
It's a pleasure
to be back again.
And hello to our newcomer,
it's Irene March!
I am so delighted to be here
at this pun-nacle of humor!
I've always had a pun-chent
for telling jokes.
My sister doesn't
like it though.
She only laughs at
pun-in-a-million.
Irene, you are definitely not
pun-familiar with this game.
Who will be our winning
wordsmith tonight?
Will Irene March
be a step ahead?
Or will it be another swish
for our friend, not the fish,
Edgar Salmon.
Whose nine day winning streak
could really pay off tonight.
If he becomes the first Pun
Hero to win ten games in a row.
Don't worry Chet,
I am pun-stoppable.
Are you sure, Edgar? This
is a serious pun-dertaking.
[Chet] There you
have it. Stay tuned!
Anything can happen
here on Pun Hero!
Oh. It looks like Irene
wasn't so lucky after all.
[multiple message notifications]
[Jane] It goes to
the top of what?
[Sadie] Oh good! It's working.
What's working?
I started a social
media campaign for you
on the Foundation's account.
To spread word that
Irene is missing.
Hashtag IreneMarchMissing.
It'll help if more people
are on the lookout for her.
Well, people are not
only on the lookout,
they're crying conspiracy!
Well, you'll have to
weed through the messages
to see which ones are
worth following up,
but it's good to have a
public forum for tips.
Someone out there
knows something.
It seems like a lot
of people out there
think they know a lot of things.
I'm not sure if I should
be thanking you for this
or cursing you.
Fair enough.
You can silence the alerts and
just focus on the facts for now.
Thank you.
Every minute counts in
a missing persons case.
And the sooner you find Irene
the sooner you can
help me prep the Gala!
I'll start at her office
first thing in the morning.
But, for tonight, what
can I do for you, Sadie?
The Times has been downsizing
since the news moved online.
Irene always advocated for
the paper to remain in print.
She was old school like that.
This is her office right here.
Looks like Irene really knew
how to craft a headline.
Yeah.
And she didn't seem to shy
away from any controversy.
She was seasoned, reporting
crime for 30 years.
Irene knew what she was doing.
Hmmm...
Do you think she could
be undercover somewhere?
Undercover wasn't Irene's thing.
She didn't back down
or hide from anyone.
She liked to look people in the
eye when she took them down.
How were relations
in the office?
She was cordial with everyone,
but Irene is a tough
woman to get to know.
She was a firm believer
in the power of words
and she never minced them.
I can't imagine that
sat well with everyone?
A trusted, devoted journalist
with a strong sense of ethics
and a reputation for
exposing fraud goes missing.
I mean, anyone that Irene
wrote an expos about
could hold a grudge
or want revenge.
I suppose that
could be possible.
I'll do some research before
we overwhelm our suspect list.
Yeah.
Is this Sadie's Charity Gala?
Why would Irene have this?
Press releases are delivered
to the whole office.
[knocking]
Hi. Is Irene back?
No.
I saw some people in her
office and thought maybe she...
Wait, who are you?
[Sophie] She's not
been fired has she?
No! No.
This is...
I'm an old friend of Irene's.
We had lunch plans today,
but Margret just informed
me of her disappearance.
If only the police would step up
and take her disappearance
more seriously.
You don't think the police
are doing their job?
I think the story Irene
published about the
old Police Chief isn't
helping move things along.
That can't be true.
Don't worry. My sources and
I have an ear to the ground.
I owe Irene that much.
She wouldn't give up on a story
like this and I won't either.
We'll bring Irene home soon.
- [phone rings]
- Oh, excuse me.
Well, if you want to go
through Irene's old exposs
and see if you
can find anything?
Will do. I'll let you know
when I see you tonight.
All right. It's a date.
[Jane] What are you doing?
I used to bird-sit for Irene.
And she'd always leave me a key.
Bird-sit?
Oh yeah.
Irene loves Perry as if
he was her own child.
[Jane] Keep the lights off.
I brought a flashlight.
[Margret] Oops!
That shouldn't be there.
Oh my gosh!
[Jane] Someone has definitely
been here looking for something.
[Parrot] Peek-a-boo!
Peek-a-boo!
[both gasp]
Hi Perry!
I see you! Peek-a-boo!
- [Jane] Hi Perry.
- [Perry squawks]
[Perry] Be quiet bird!
I see you! I see you!
[Jane] Stay right there!
The police are on their way!
[Margret] Are they?
How did you...
[Craig] Please! Whatever
you want, just...
Who are you? What
are you doing here?
I'm, I'm Craig, Irene's nephew.
Did Irene ever mention a nephew?
Ah... She did mention
a nephew actually.
She said she wanted to...
Never mind, I'll tell you later.
Let's see some ID.
Oh yeah.
I don't have any on
me. I walked here.
Oh, well that's convenient!
I didn't think I'd needed to
prove my identity to someone
that broke into my aunt's house!
We didn't break in.
I knew where the key
was from bird-sitting.
You're the co-worker
who bird-sits Perry?
Oh, she trusted you.
Yeah, and how are we
supposed to trust you, Craig?
I don't know...
My photos are
hanging on her wall?
He's right.
Oh! Look at the one
with your braces.
Oh yeah...
That only proves
that he knows Irene.
What are you doing
here right now?
Aunt Irene hasn't been
returning any of my texts.
My mom wanted me
to check in on her.
So you're wandering around
her house in the dark?
Jane, I think he's
telling the truth.
I didn't want to touch the
light switch or anything.
This could be a crime scene.
Clearly something happened here.
I should be asking
why you're here!
Ah... Hi. I'm Margret.
Your Aunt Irene is my mentor
at the Old City Times.
I haven't been able to
get a hold of her either.
It's not like her.
I'm worried so I hired
Jane and her Foundation
to help me find her.
Do you think something bad
could have happened to Irene?
[Perry] Peek-a-boo! Squawk!
Irene would never leave
Perry alone for this long.
Something's not
right. I know it.
Yeah, something is
definitely odd here.
I think we should
call the police.
And let's try to get a hold
of Detective John Cameron.
He works with us
at the Foundation.
He'll know what to do.
Okay, I swear, I haven't
done anything! Okay?
Call my mom, she'll
confirm everything!
Craig, it's fine. You
can put your arms down.
Like you said, this is
a potential crime scene.
We need to call the police.
You believe me?
I mean, you seem like
a pretty honest guy.
You can tell the police
everything you know.
And if you're telling the truth,
everything should be fine.
But someone was definitely
here looking for something.
And we need to figure
out what that was
if we're going to help
your Aunt Irene. So...
Take a look around, see
if anything is missing.
[Craig] Hey, check this out.
Who writes letters anymore?
Let me see that.
It's signed Edgar Salmon.
That game show guy?
Yeah.
[Jane reads note] Irene...
The only thing worse than your
wordplay is your sense of humor.
You're dead to me.
Edgar sounds pretty
vicious there.
Definitely. That's a threat.
Yeah.
When was the last time
you talked to Irene?
A week ago. But my mom talked
to her Thursday morning
Well, if your mom was the
last person to talk to her,
she might have some
really good insight.
Do you think we
could call your mom?
Uhhh... Yeah. I think we
could definitely do that.
But, um, I mean, is
that really necessary?
Craig, come on. I was
just starting to like you.
Please take Mom with
a grain of salt.
Her and Irene aren't exactly on
the best terms at the moment.
Just sister stuff because
they're identical twins, so.
You know how that goes.
They've always been competitive
and this game show windfall
is a touchy subject.
[phone rings]
Oh, honey, not right now.
They're about to call
the lottery numbers.
It's important, Mom.
I'm with someone who needs
to ask you a few questions.
[Craig] She's a detective.
Oh, you're in trouble...
Hi there, my name is Jane.
When was the last time
you talked to Irene?
Thursday morning.
I called to congratulate her
on her big game show cash win,
but she didn't want
to talk about it,
ungrateful as always.
But did anything seem
off about her to you?
No. She was her usual
paranoid, self important self.
[Jane] Paranoid? How so?
My twin has always had the
flair for the dramatic.
[Ida] She always thinks people
are looking at her funny.
I told her not to
have such a big head.
Did you talk about
anything else?
[Ida] Yeah. I asked if she
was going to pay me back
the $45,000 that she owes
me, I lent her years ago.
She didn't like that.
She's always been
the stubborn one.
Always has to have
the last word.
So, Irene didn't want
to repay her debt?
No. She said it was the
last thing on her mind.
She had more important
things to think about.
Did she mention what?
Well, you're at her house, why
don't you ask her yourself?
She'll run her
mouth off for you.
[Craig] She's not here, Mom.
Her place has been ransacked.
The police are on their way.
Well, she's always
home at night.
So, where is she?
Well, that's what we're
hoping to find out for you.
She's okay, though, right?
We're looking into it, Mom.
So...
What are your thoughts on Craig?
Don't go getting a crush
on a potential suspect!
It's just that,
Irene had mentioned
that she wanted to set
me up with her nephew.
So, she must have thought
he was a good person.
And a good match for you.
Okay, so here's what we know.
Irene and her sister have a
pretty strained relationship,
but I don't know, Craig and his
mom don't seem like the type
that would do anything
to Irene for $45,000.
I mean, it's not
that big of a payout.
But, Edgar Salmon lost $300,000
when Irene beat him on Pun Hero.
Uh huh. And he sent her
this threatening letter.
Sounds like a sore loser.
Well, I'm going to find out.
[John] Okay, I think
I got it all now.
But please tell me you
didn't just break and enter.
No, we did not break and
enter, okay. We have a key.
Okay. Got it. So now
we have a crime scene.
Yeah. Missing persons
unit should take a look at
the letter from Edgar
Salmon on the table.
All right. We'll need
a statement from you.
Of course. I'll come
down to the station.
Thanks, John.
[John] See you.
Margret, did Irene happen to
mention any of the stories that
she was working on
before she disappeared?
That's the thing.
No one knows.
[Margret] Irene
was very careful.
She had secret sources,
off the record chats.
She kept all of her information
locked down until she had all
of her ducks in a row and was
ready to publish an article.
What about her records?
I mean, her computer?
She always kept it with her.
If it's not here,
it's missing too.
Hello.
Edgar Salmon, thanks
for coming in today.
Of course, of course.
Let's hope this doesn't
take too long, though.
I've got a very
important meeting
with a very big
Hollywood producer. So.
Do you know why I asked
you to come in today?
Of course. The
police need my help.
Probably have a lot of questions
about my record breaking,
star making winning streak on
America's favorite game show.
Hmmm.
Does Irene March ring a bell?
Unfortunately.
Now, um, what is your
relationship with her?
[Edgar] Non-existent.
When did you last see her?
Wednesday. She marched
out of the studio.
You know, Irene's been
missing for four days.
Well, hopefully she's
drowning in all the money
she stole from me.
You know what? I
don't need to be here.
I came in voluntarily, so...
[John] We appreciate you coming.
Wow! Edgar Salmon?
The Edgar Salmon?
In the flesh.
Wow! I'm such a huge fan.
Do you think I can get a selfie?
Of course! You're so sweet.
Great.
Perfect. Thank you.
You're welcome. Now remember
to tag and follow me
when you post that.
Oh! You know I will!
I have to say, though,
I was really disappointed
that you didn't win.
I mean, I thought
you deserved it.
You're telling me.
I was the punniest.
That show was rigged for Irene!
Rigged? How do you
think they did it?
Well, those small town
producers, they didn't want to
pay me the money that
I was going to win.
So they lobbed Irene all
these softball questions.
Probably gave her some
of the answers too.
You might want to...
So you sent her a
threatening letter?
I left that letter
after the show.
And she was no threat.
Her wordplay was subpar.
Why are using her name
in the past tense?
Because she's dead
to me! In the past.
Some big Hollywood producer,
they bought the rights
to Pun Hero and
they're going to make a
celebrity all-star version
with moi as the star.
Wow! That's incredible!
Do you think I could get
your autograph then too?
Absolutely.
I promise I'll keep it until
you're, like, way super famous.
Well, that won't be long.
Certainly they'd want
Irene's involvement too?
[Edgar] We'll see about that.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I
have a very important meeting
with a big time...
Hollywood producer!
[Edgar] That's right.
[John] Good luck with that.
Oh, I don't need
luck, Detective.
I'm Edgar Salmon.
Bye.
Wow!
[phone rings]
This is my Captain.
Oh, yeah yeah.
[John] Captain Pogue, sir.
Yes, what can I do for you?
Sir, yes sir, I understand.
Irene March's case is being
handled by missing person unit,
but someone needed to
talk with Edgar Salmon.
I mean, he clearly has
a grudge against her.
[John] Yes sir.
Irene March is not my case.
Irene March is not my case.
Sorry.
[Jane] Congratulations Edgar,
you've just moved up to
the number one suspect!
[Sadie] Exciting!
What pushed him to the top?
And don't forget Ida had
motive with that debt.
Right, but the way that
Edgar talked about Irene
in the past tense and
with such disdain,
I mean, there's something
very strange going on there.
Plus I've looked
into Ida and Craig,
and both their
records are clear.
[phone alert]
Sadie, I've got to turn
these notifications off.
I've gotten 37 in the last hour.
I appreciate you setting up
this social media campaign,
but I just don't think that...
What? What is it?
[Jane reads] Irene got what
she deserved and you will too.
[Jane] It could just be
some empty threat, you know.
Some troll who likes
to say mean things
behind the safety
of their screen.
Irene's case is high profile.
The media have picked up on it
and it's all over the place.
The deeper you get the
more visible you'll be.
You could be a target now too.
Okay. I'll talk to John,
but I'm not backing out now.
Hey...
Do you think maybe you
can trace the person
that sent the message?
I'll do my best, but don't
forget to talk to John.
Yeah. I know, Sadie, I know.
Plus I still have a ton
of prep to do for the Gala
and these centerpieces
may just be the end of me.
I'm so sorry I haven't
been here more.
How's everything going?
Harold is inspiring me
but I must admit to feeling
a little overwhelmed.
Thank goodness for
the events team.
I mean, they're working wonders.
I promise this is all going
to pay off soon, Sadie.
If I could just get this
seating chart figured out,
it'll deserve its
own press release.
Oh! Did you notice if Irene
purchased a ticket to the Gala?
Not that I know
of. Why do you ask?
I just saw the press
release on her desk,
thought it was a coincidence.
Well, I'm glad to hear
that it was delivered
to the news outlets.
I mean, ticket sales have been
nowhere near what I anticipated.
I was starting to wonder if
I'd forgotten to send it out!
Sadie, you're building
a wonderful event, okay.
Have faith. People will come.
All right. Now
let's attack this.
Uh huh.
Oh, John! Fancy
meeting you here.
Are you borrowing a
scarf from Sadie, too?
Very funny. But no.
Sadie actually had these
clothes sent over for me.
She's insisting I look
good for the Gala.
I'd say mission accomplished!
That suit looks...
Looks good, yeah.
But?
Ah, but, it's a little boring?
But we could try
something like a tux, huh?
Don't let me guess.
Sadie sent you here to make
sure I dressed myself properly.
No. Sadie sent me here to
give you some fashion advice,
which is exactly what I'm doing.
But what I really need
from you is some good news.
Any updates on the case?
Well, Edgar is firmly on the
missing persons unit's
suspect list now.
Oh, okay. That's good.
Anything else?
[John] Nothing I can share
with you, I'm afraid.
Right.
Yeah, I'm sorry about that.
I hope I didn't get
you in too much trouble
for helping me
out earlier today.
No, nothing to be sorry about.
I'm a police
officer. It's my job.
I'm here to help Irene.
But unfortunately, I was
told not to further interfere
on a case that's
not in my division.
Oh, that makes sense.
Fortunately, I looked
into her records
before I was told
to not overstep.
Yes!
Did you find anything good?
Yeah. She received several
incoming phone calls from an
unregistered number about a
week before her disappearance.
Unregistered number...
Someone's trying
to hide something.
Yeah, maybe, but I don't
think from who you think.
Irene's bank account
received a $150,000 deposit
the day the game
show host was taped.
Wow. That's, that's
a lot of money.
[John] Yeah, it
is a lot of money.
Especially for a journalist
in a declining profession.
Yeah, it's way more
than her prize money.
Do you think it
could be hush money?
[John] Yeah, it could be.
But who would want
to keep Irene quiet?
I don't know, but Margret is
going to look at some people
that might still
be holding grudges.
I'll check in with her today see
if she's turned up anything yet.
All right. How's
this for boring?
Oh!
No, that's not boring at all.
Do I look okay?
Yeah, yeah. You
look, you look nice.
Nice?
You know what I mean.
Do I?
I think, um, I think
this is the one.
Yeah, me too.
[phone notification]
Oh, um, that's
Margret. I should go.
But...
You look really good.
Why thank you.
[Chet] I can't believe it!
Did you see what she did there?
With her response pancake
Irene March flattened
the competition and
has taken the win!
[applause, cheering]
[Chet] I'm sorry, Edgar.
That means your
dough will not rise.
You won't be taking home
the grand cash prize.
[Chet] Tell us, Irene, what
will you do with your winnings?
Chet, I feel like I'm in
the land of milk and money.
It'll help me to use
words to reveal injustice
and work on stories of
great importance. Wow!
[applause]
That's an odd thing to
say, don't you think?
I mean, I wonder what
Irene meant by that?
She almost seems defiant.
Like she's gathering
all of her energy,
getting ready for a fight.
Yeah. Or like she's
sending someone a message.
But who?
And what's the message?
I mean, there's
definitely something
between the lines there.
Irene always wanted to
start her own justice column
to expose inequities
without anyone to edit her.
She wanted to say it all
and say it her own way.
Maybe that's what she
was planning to do.
[Craig] I need to see
Margret Olsen! Now!
It's important.
Oh, Margret! Jane!
Is that Craig?
It's okay, he's with me.
Hey.
She texted me!
What?
I got a text from Irene
about fifteen minutes ago.
Well, what did she say?
She didn't say
where she is, but...
She said, Hi Craig. Thanks
for checking in with me.
I'm fine and just laying low for
a few days until tempers cool.
Tempers cool?
At least she's okay.
Something doesn't feel
right. She calls me Craig.
Well, that is your name.
Aunt Irene has never called
me Craig in her entire life.
Always Curly.
Irene's either in danger
and sending me a code,
or it's not her texting.
What do we do?
Well, Irene didn't
say where she is,
but it got me thinking about
the phone tracking app.
I never thought to check because
Irene would never leave
something like that on.
She's far too careful for that.
Right. But I
checked and it's on.
She must have known she
was headed into danger.
Well, where is she?
The GPS shows the
phone's location
is at a downtown address.
Thats the game show studio!
Call John.
Thirsty this morning, huh?
Uh huh.
[phone rings]
Hi Jane.
Hey.
One second, okay?
Uh huh.
Jane, look, I'm sorry. I
was asked to stand down.
I can't overstep on an
active missing persons case.
Well, it might not be a missing
persons case much longer.
We've located Irene.
Really? That's great.
Where's she been?
I'm headed to the Pun Hero
studio right now to find out.
The studio?
Okay. Look, stay
alert. Keep me updated.
And make sure and tell the
missing persons unit too. Okay?
Will do.
Okay, I'm ready.
We are too.
I found the floor plans of
the Pun Hero studio online.
So we should be able to
guide you through the space
pretty easily.
First things first,
you've got to get inside.
Gotcha.
We'll be here, right in
your ear when you need us.
[Jane] Okay.
So, ah, looks like we've
have a ticket entrance
for the general public, but
security is kind of lax.
We, oh. Never mind.
We have a guard.
We're going to
need another plan.
Maybe ask if the
guard has seen Irene?
Hi!
I'm here to meet a friend
of mine, Irene March.
She was a contestant
on the show last week.
Look familiar?
Okay, ah, well, she
told me to meet her here
so can I just pop backstage
real quick and look around?
Look, I hate to do this, but my
sick and dying grandmother is a
Right...
Okay, well, thank you so much.
You're great at your job.
That's not going to work.
I'll head back, away
from Mr. Charisma here.
[they both chuckle]
Okay, okay, I didn't feel
great about that last untruth,
but it didn't work, so no harm.
You're a legend! Don't
stress. We've got your back.
The backstage door should
be a couple of yards ahead.
[Jane] Okay.
Okay, I'm in. It's clear.
Yes! Nice work!
Where to now?
Okay, so you're
backstage of the studio.
Dressing rooms are on your left,
hair and makeup
are straight ahead.
[Margret] What are
you seeing, Jane?
Not what we're looking for.
Okay, let's the try the
hair and makeup room.
It should be the next room over.
[gasps]
[Margret] Jane! What is it?
It's just a
mannequin. It's fine.
[loud noise]
I'm supposed to be here.
[big sigh]
Jane?
That was close.
Don't worry. Let's keep moving.
There is no sign of
Irene anywhere backstage.
[Craig] Straight ahead should
be a door to the soundstage.
Okay.
She's got to be here somewhere.
Irene!
Irene!
Are you sure that the
phone is at this address?
Yes! Keep looking.
Hi! Remember me?
The selfie for sick grandma...
Okay, for the record
the door was open.
I did not break or enter.
Well, I mean I entered but
I didn't break anything.
[together] Ugh!
[Margret] You were so close!
Well, at least the security
guard was nice enough to just
give me a warning.
But we still don't
have Irene's phone.
[Jane] It's got to be
in the main studio.
And that's the only place I
didn't get to fully check!
[police sirens]
Oh wow. That sure
sounds intense.
[police sirens]
Yeah, it looks like it too.
[Jane] They're pulling
into the studio.
I'm going to check it out.
Oh no.
Jane?
[message notification]
[big exhale of breath]
What is it?
It's John.
They've found a body.
[indistinct conversation]
Can I take a look
at this, please?
Oh man...
My source said the cleaner found
a woman's body in the dumpster.
Yeah. Yeah, I heard that too.
I'm just hoping it's not her.
If it is Irene, it
will be such a loss.
She's one of the
good ones. The best.
Don't worry. If it's a
homicide, the police will be
doubly motivated
by public pressure
to find whoever did this to her.
And I'll be sure
to keep this story
on the front page until they do.
I just, I wish we knew if
it was her or not, you know.
I don't know what to.
Stay here and wait
or keep looking.
This is impossible!
Jane, forgive me, but I've
always gotten the feeling that
you haven't been totally
forthcoming with me.
If you have any information
that could help Irene,
it's best not to
keep it to yourself.
Call me anytime.
I'd love to hear your
perspective on things.
Off the record, of course.
So, was everything before
this on the record?
I'm afraid it's
confirmed. It's Irene.
We were so close.
I mean, why couldn't we
have found her sooner?
Don't be hard on yourself.
I've got to tell
Margret. And Craig.
And I've got a story to file.
Her body should be on the way
to the medical examiner by now.
[sobbing] I can't believe this.
This isn't right.
She was a force of nature,
loved by so many people.
I know.
Through her articles she helped
people she never even met.
If this could happen to her,
it could happen to
me, you, any of us.
Well, let's not think
like that right now, okay?
What do we do now?
Can anything we found
out help the case?
Well, ah, officers are
at the scene right now
combing for any clues.
John ordered an autopsy.
Sadly all we can
do is just wait.
Oh no. I have to call my mom.
She's going to be devastated.
I'll drive you home.
You shouldn't be alone.
Oh... What about Perry?
He shouldn't be alone
any longer either.
I mean, parrots
are social birds...
Don't worry about
that. It's okay.
I'll get Perry. I'll
take care of him.
You two take care of each other.
Try to get some rest.
We'll know more soon.
[Perry] Peek-a-boo!
Peek-a-boo! Squawk!
Perry, I'm not in the
mood to play games, okay.
[Perry] Play games!
Play games! Squawk!
[Jane chuckles]
Perry the parrot...
Something tells me
you're going to be
an interesting roommate.
[Jane] Oh!
[Perry] I see you! I see you!
I see you!
Huh.
Well.
The police and the
intruder missed this
and that's their loss.
[Perry] I see you! I see you!
Shhh! I'm going to put it back
when I'm done with it. Relax.
Come on.
[Perry] I see you! I see you!
Enough out of you, Perry.
[Perry squawks] I
see you! I see you!
1-1-1-1.
1-2-3-4.
Ahh!
[Perry] Ahhhh!
[squawks and whistles]
Do you have any
helpful suggestions?
Peek-a-boo! Peek-a-boo! Squawk!
I'm done with the
games right now, Perry!
Ah. I thought I'd find
the coffee pot in here.
Oh, you look frazzled.
Anything I can help with?
Yes, please. Do you want
to take a lucky guess
at Irene's computer password?
You stole a computer
from a dead woman?
No! I just borrowed it!
I figured while the police are
figuring out how Irene died,
I can try and look into what
trouble she got mixed up with.
If I could ever figure
out this stupid password!
[Perry] Ahhhh! [whistles]
What's this guy's name?
[Perry squawks]
People often use pet names.
Oh, yeah! That's good thinking!
Urgh!
Peek a boo! Peek a boo! Squawk!
[laughs] He's hilarious.
He's infuriating.
I am so close, I
can feel it, Sadie.
I don't think Irene would
have hidden this computer
unless there was something
really, really important on it.
[Perry squawks]
[message notification]
Are you still getting
those notifications?
No. No, this one's from John.
He said that the preliminary
exam is almost done
at the morgue.
He wants me to meet
him down there.
Ugh...
Suddenly banging my
head against a wall
guessing computer passwords
all night doesn't seem so bad.
Not all is lost, my dear.
Sometimes a dead end can
turn you back in a direction
where you missed something
important the first time around.
Oh, by the by...
I wasn't able to find out
who posted that online threat
to you, but it's clearly
from a fake account.
Look. The profile uses a picture
stolen from another account,
and has no friend connections.
I mean, it likely exists
just to troll accounts
and make cowardly
online threats.
What is wrong with people?
Don't they have anything
better to do with their time?
Apparently not.
They also viewed stories
I posted about the Gala.
I mean, thankfully they
didn't write anything nasty
in the comments.
They're certainly nosing
about where they shouldn't be.
Thanks for looking
into that, though.
Happy to help.
Now I really do need to
get back to the Gala.
I have only a few days left and
many, many doors to knock on.
Still?
I have no choice!
People who said they'd happily
pledge donations haven't yet.
Maybe they just
need to be reminded?
I hate bothering people, but I
will knock on every door I have
to to raise the money I promised
the Children's Hospital.
Well, good luck Sadie.
Right back at you.
[Perry] Back attcha! Squawk!
Sadie, what's wrong?
[sobbing] It's all such a
mess! And it's all my fault.
What happened?
I just got an earful
from our biggest donor.
At least she was our
biggest donor last year.
She said she bought tickets and
that she made a healthy donation
and that I didn't even have the
courtesy to acknowledge her.
But I didn't receive
anything from her.
I would have remembered
her donation.
I've been refreshing
the page all the time.
How did that happen?
I have no idea!
I personally thank
everyone who supports us,
no matter what size
their donation.
Somehow my numbers are way off.
You know how technology is,
I'm sure it's just a glitch.
A glitch!
She's accusing me of
mishandling the money.
You? Fraud?
That's crazy.
What if the same problem
happened to my other donors?
You know what, Sadie.
We are going to look
into this together, okay.
And we are going to figure
out where the money went.
Yes but how can the
money be missing?
[Sadie sniffles]
It's too late.
[Sadie sniffles]
I'll have to cancel the Gala!
And we'll loose
all the deposits.
[Sadie sobs]
I'll donate the remaining
budget to the hospital.
It's the best I can do now.
Sadie, I'm so sorry.
I should have been here more.
It's okay. I just
want to be alone.
Are you sure you don't
want to wait outside?
No I'm okay. It's just
the last time I was
here was to ID my mom.
It was not a great day.
I'm sorry.
Like, you don't
have to stay, okay.
No, really, I'm okay.
If we could just talk
about anything else.
All right.
Did you hear about the
guy who had an accident
at the upholstery factory?
No! What happened?
Don't worry, he recovered.
[Jane laughs]
Wow!
That, that was terrible!
I know!
But also perfect. Thank you.
Hey, my pleasure.
Lots more where that came from.
Well, why don't you just
keep those holstered for now.
Okay. For now.
[they both chuckle]
Hey, I was thinking since
we're both going to the Gala,
do you want to...
Maybe go together?
Is this you trying
to distract me,
or are you actually
asking me out on a date?
I'd say a little of both.
Well, ah, I'd love to.
But unfortunately Sadie's
having to cancel the Gala.
Oh no. Why?
I mean, she put so much
time and effort into it.
I know.
She's got some issues to
work out with the donors.
But you could ask me out
on a date again sometime.
Maybe when we're
not in a morgue.
You got it.
[door opens and closes]
John! I was hoping not
to see you again so soon.
Same.
You know, I'd love not too
see you at least a week, Zach.
Yeah, worst part of my job!
[they both chuckle]
Zach, this is Jane.
She's Harold's successor at the
Foundation for Righting Wrongs.
I see they've got you partnered
with this guy over here, huh.
Yeah, it's the worst
part of my job.
[Zach laughs]
Zach and I met the day
he started working here.
I actually showed him
where those drawers where.
He's like the big brother
I never asked for.
And I can't seem
to get rid of him.
Lucky you.
All right. Let's
get this over with
so we can get all some
closure here. Okay?
Okay, Irene March...
Well, I'm sorry to report,
but it looks like we've
have a homicide here.
Cause of death - excessive
blood loss due to
multiple gunshot
wounds to the chest.
So she was shot?
Yeah. Multiple times,
at close range.
[Zach] Which leads me to believe
that she knew the killer.
Yeah, it seems personal.
[Zach] Yup. And the killer was
just as likely as tall as her.
I just... I can't stop thinking
about how awful that must be
to die alone in a dumpster.
Oh, well, she was
killed somewhere else
and then put in the dumpster.
We're still confirming
the location
of where she was
shot and bled out.
We're testing some
trace evidence
from the studio building.
Well, there were no
defensive wounds.
So, she died quickly,
didn't suffer.
What kind of timeline are
we looking at here, Zach?
Well, Irene had been dead
for at least five days
before she was found.
So, by my estimation, she
probably died Thursday.
Wait, so that means that
the killer texted Craig
from Irene's phone after
she was already dead?
Yeah. It's pretty
twisted, right?
That's beyond disturbing.
Well, I hate to leave you
both on such a happy note,
but, John, I emailed
you the report.
If you have any questions
just give me a call. Okay?
Will do. Thanks, Zach.
Why would someone bring Irene's
body back to the Pun Hero stage?
And why send a text from a phone
that's so easily traceable?
Well, someone wanted
Irene to be found.
I mean, you have to be pretty
cold blooded to shoot somebody
at point blank.
Yeah, well, whoever's behind
this is not playing around.
Listen, Jane...
Like, I'm sorry, but I just,
I have to ask you to...
What, to step back?
John, come on. You know
I'm not doing that.
Look, it's not safe.
The police are on it
and I'm on it. So...
Don't you trust that I
know what I'm doing by now?
I trust you! I don't trust
some sociopath who sends texts
from a dead person's phone.
Are we seriously having
an argument right now
after we just agreed
to go on a second date?
Is it so bad that I
want you to be safe
so that we can actually
go on a second date?
No! I want to be safe!
Trust me, I'd love to be safe so
I can go on many dates with you!
- Well, great!
- Great!
Okay, fine. Fine.
I'll go to the Foundation office
and I'll go do
some computer work.
Are you happy?
Yes, that would be great.
Great.
But you need to
keep me in the loop!
[Sophie] You should be
keeping all the news outlets
in the loop as well John.
Sophie, you're not
supposed to be here.
I'm here for Irene.
Someone is trying to
silence the truth tellers
and I won't let that happen.
Irene's story
deserves to be told.
That's admirable Sophie, but...
Please, John, just a soundbite
on any leads the
police are following.
No! I'm not available
for comment. Sorry.
That's too bad.
You know this relationship
could work both ways.
Sophie, if you have
any information
that can help us track
down Irene's killer...
You know I can't
reveal my sources.
Hmm.
I assume you fully understand
obstruction of justice?
Fine.
I have a source who confided
that Irene was going to meet
with Edgar Salmon at the studio
the night she disappeared.
Well, thank you Sophie.
I'll check into it.
And I get to ask
the first question
at the next press conference?
Sure.
Call me.
She's so annoying.
But she could
prove to be useful.
I mean, she seems pretty
committed to getting answers.
She seems like a bulldog.
Never mind her.
All clues are pointing
back to Edgar Salmon.
It looks like maybe it's
time to bring him in
as an official suspect.
All right, I'll do that.
Okay. But keep me in the loop.
I will.
[Margret] Hi Jane.
Hey, I thought I called Craig.
You did.
Craig is helping Ida take
the chicken out of the oven.
Craig!
[Margret] Jane's on
the phone for you.
You're at Ida's house?
Yeah. Craig wants to
be here for his mom.
And Irene did mention she
that she wanted to set
Craig and I up, so we
thought we'd honor her wishes
by getting to know each
other better a bit better.
Aw. That's lovely.
Here.
Hey Jane. Did
something come up?
Hey, yes, so I found
Irene's computer,
but I need help cracking
the password to get in.
Do you have any ideas?
Did you try Perry's name?
I tried the bird's name,
I tried your nickname,
wordplay, obvious
number combinations.
Nothing.
[Ida] Your guess
is as good as mine.
She would have gone
for something clever.
Something so obvious no
one would ever guess.
Yeah. I'm beginning
to feel that way.
Hey, remember that
scavenger hunt
she made for my 10th birthday?
The answer for the clue I
couldn't solve ended up being on
the back of the instruction
sheet the whole time.
It took you ages
to figure that out!
[they both chuckle]
[Ida] Yeah, she always
loved her games.
You know what?
Craig, you don't need to be
worrying about this right now.
Okay?
You all go and
enjoy your dinner.
Say a cheers to Irene for me.
[Craig] Thanks, Jane.
Okay bye.
Okay. Something obvious that
no one would ever guess...
Password?
[Perry] Password!
Password! Squawk!
Perry, I don't want to
play games right now, okay.
Wait. Are you
playing a game or...
Peek-a-boo! I see you!
Squawk! [whistles]
[gasps] Yes!
Oh no...
[Jane] Sadie!
You're awfully perky.
No time for wallowing, okay.
I need you to hear this.
Irene was investigating
someone named Angela.
She was setting up fake fund-me
accounts for phony charity
events and then collecting
the money for herself.
That's horrendous!
It gets worse.
I recognized one of the people
that she was raising money for.
Amelia?
[Sadie] John's niece?
Yeah. This is the same
photo that you have up on
the Children's Hospital
Gala event page.
Well, anyone can easily
download it. I mean...
What awful person would
use it for their own gain?
Do you remember
that fake account
that was nosing
around your socials?
The troll?
Uh huh.
You don't think...
I do.
I think Angela sent me
the threatening message
and then she hijacked your Gala.
That's why you haven't
been getting the numbers
you expected.
The donors are being
siphoned to a bogus site.
Uh huh.
Irene had detailed notes on
the whole scam, the perpetrator
and these innocent families that
have no idea that their photo
and their stories
are being used.
Irene knew about this?
[Jane] Uh huh.
Why wouldn't she come forward?
It looked like she was
getting ready to come forward
about the fraud,
but then she didn't.
There must have
been a good reason.
Maybe she was waiting
for a smoking gun?
Or, or maybe Irene wasn't who
we thought she was at all.
John told me that on
the day she disappeared
there was a $150,000 deposit
into her bank account.
That's a lot more than
she won on the game show.
Yeah, a lot more.
Was it hush money?
Irene's computer
had files with dirt
on all sorts of people
for all manner of things.
I mean, maybe, maybe she
was blackmailing them.
Well, that could certainly
get her into trouble.
But stealing from sick children?
I mean, that's lower than low.
Yeah.
And it doesn't fit with what
we know to be true about Irene.
Her journalism was the
height of integrity.
Unless she had everyone fooled.
She could be less than
innocent in all of this.
That's definitely possible.
Now we can't jump
to conclusions.
You know, I think it's time
I did a little research
on Angela of my own.
Well, you'll be on her radar and
if Angela's capable of murder,
you need to keep a low profile.
What about this?
It's a little on the
nose, don't you think,
for an undercover job, ?
It's a cape! It's
very classic.
Fashion meets function.
Tons of non-detective
types wear them these days.
Yes, very 1930's detectives
from old black and white movies.
Exactly.
Next you'll be
wanting one of those
tweed caps with the ear flaps.
Ooh, a deerstalker!
Tell me Uncle Harold had one.
You're going on a stakeout,
not trick-or-treating,
Sherlock Holmes.
Fine.
All right, Ms. Angela Dandee.
Let's see what you're up to.
You understand how this
looks, don't you Edgar?
I don't care how.
It's the truth!
I didn't do anything to Irene.
I never even saw her
outside of taping the show.
You have no alibi.
I told you, I was
at the lookout.
Do you not write this down?
Where no one saw
you or your car.
[John] No one can
confirm your whereabouts
when Irene was murdered.
That is not my fault!
Call the producer for
Celebrity Pun Hero. Okay?
She's the one who told me to
be at the lookout that night!
Well, actually, we've been
trying to locate a producer
named Laura Wasserman.
Apparently she doesn't exist.
Oh, so because she didn't
show up, she doesn't exist.
I don't think so, Detective.
You know, the number you gave us
was a local unregistered number.
No other producer on Pun Hero
knows anything about a spinoff.
And no other contestant
was contacted about
an all-star episode.
Clearly, I was the first call!
Do you know who I am?
There is no Celebrity
Pun Hero without me.
No.
There is no celebrity
all-star Pun Hero, period.
Why would I lie?
I'm not a murderer. I
wouldn't hurt a fly.
I don't know Edgar,
but it's not adding up!
You said Pun Hero cheated you.
So why would you agree
to be in a spinoff?
I'm a punny guy, Detective.
I'm a, I'm a middle
aged punny man.
And I liked being on television.
I like being a somebody.
Most of my life I felt invisible
and I liked being recognized,
people cheering
for me, liking me.
Is that so bad?
No.
That's the first thing you've
said that I actually believe.
[Jane] Where are you Angela?
[phone rings]
Oh, hey John!
[John] Is now a bad time?
No, no! I'm just...
At the office, doing some...
Some computer work
like we talked about.
Well, I just finished
up with Edgar Salmon.
He has motive, and definitely
some holes in his story, but
my gut says no.
Really?
Sure, he's an arrogant
nerd, but a killer...
No.
Okay, then I guess we keep our
eye out for other suspects.
[John] So is the
Gala really canceled?
Yeah, yeah. Sadie
is just devastated.
What happened?
Can I talk to her?
You know, now is
not a great time.
She's resting and kind of
wants to be by herself.
But there are some
things about the Gala
that I need to tell you.
All right. What's up?
I'm going to send you some
documents from Irene's computer.
I need you to take
a look them and then
I'm going to call
you later. Okay?
[John] Okay.
Okay.
Oh! Oh! My coffee spilled!
I gotta go! Okay, bye.
Sophie's in on it!
What's this?
Your smoking gun!
Look, I asked you
to stay out of this.
I stayed out of your
investigation, all right.
This has to do with mine.
Okay. What do you
think you've uncovered?
Did you look at the
documents I sent you
from Irene's computer?
Yes, and I sent some
officers over to
pick up Angela Dandee right now.
Well, I don't think that
Angela's the mastermind
behind all this.
Then who?
Sophie.
Sophie Flores?
Uh huh. Yeah.
I think she's been pulling
the strings the whole time.
That is, that is
a big accusation.
Well, I saw Sophie slip
this envelope to Angela.
And you have it... how?
It fell out of Angela's purse.
Um hmm.
Look, Sophie is not digging
around about Irene's murder
trying to find a news story.
She's digging around
because she's trying to
stay ahead of the investigation.
Yeah, but why kill Irene
in the first place?
I mean, Sophie wasn't mentioned
in the coverage of the scandal.
It might have been
news to Irene too.
Maybe there was a confrontation.
So killing Irene meant Sophie's
involvement in the Gala scam
would remain unknown.
Uh hmmm. And Sophie's
name still stays
on all the top news stories
covering Irene's murder.
Huh! Well, I am impressed
you put this together.
But we still need proof that
Sophie was tied into the scheme.
Well, I sent Sophie a
message and said there's been
some big developments that
we need to chat about.
Okay, but you can't
confront Sophie.
I mean, you just told me
that may be the reason
Irene was murdered.
Well, I'm meeting with
her in 30 minutes, John,
whether you help or not.
But I could really
use the assist.
Okay, what do you need?
Well, I'm thinking of using
one of Irene's tactics
to catch Sophie in the act.
I'm going to wear a wire.
I could be the one
to wear the wire.
No. She would never
confess to the police.
Sophie gave me her card.
She wants to talk to me!
Come on, John.
We're wasting time.
By the time your officers
go pick up Angela,
Sophie is going to
know something is up.
Okay.
Turn around.
[John] Okay, I'll need
a code word for you
to let me know if you need out.
How about doughnut?
Are you Sophie doesn't
suspect anything?
I mean, she's smart.
I'm sure she's done a
little research on me.
But I've you and
Margret on my side.
All I have to do is
stay one step ahead.
Okay. Look, you won't be
able to hear anything,
but I'll be listening
to you all the time.
And if you need anything,
I'll be there ASAP.
Okay. Doughnut.
Promise me you won't
come until you hear it.
And promise me
you'll be careful.
I'll do my best.
Okay.
Oh wow! Look at the time!
I'm going to be
late for my date.
[Sophie] Date?
Wow, things are moving fast
between you and Irene's nephew.
I know. I never would
have expected it,
but being with Craig
just feels right.
Romance that springs
from tragedy.
There's a great story there.
Are you working late tonight?
News never sleeps. There's
a killer on the loose.
Somebody's got to get
to the bottom of it.
Did you want me to
lock up on my way out?
- No, I'll do it.
- Okay.
- Have a great date!
- Thanks.
[Sophie] Well, Irene. I
suppose this is my office now.
[Jane] Okay, John.
Can you hear me?
That's right.
You can't answer.
Okay, I just want to say,
this is absolutely terrifying
and I highly regret forcing
you to let me do this.
It's going to be okay.
It's like stage fright.
I'll be fine.
Hey Sophie?
Jane! There you are.
So glad we're finally
getting a chance to chat.
Yeah. I'm sorry, I'm
not much of a hugger.
Feel free to have a
seat, if you'd like.
I'm good. Thanks.
So, you and I both
want the same thing.
So it only makes sense
that we work together
to find Irene's killer.
I agree.
So why did you want to meet
tonight? What's the scoop?
Well, uh...
It's about Edgar.
Are they going to charge him?
It's looking like it.
He's suspect number one.
The evidence is
piling up against him.
Wow. What do they have on him?
Well, he lost $300,000
to her, publicly.
And then he sent her
that threatening letter.
And your source said that Irene
was supposed to be meeting
with Edgar before
she disappeared.
But, you know, it's really
interesting, though,
the one thing that doesn't
line up is his alibi.
Because on Saturday night
he said he was with you.
Me? Well, that's a lie.
I was meeting with my
source on Saturday night.
Really? Who is this
secret source of yours?
I can't disclose that.
It's for their safety.
But clearly Edgar is lying.
Someone is.
Did Irene ever mention
a charity event
at the Children's
Hospital to you?
[Sophie] No, nothing.
That's odd because her computer
was full of documents detailing
your relationship
with Angela Dandee
and your involvement in the
Children's Hospital scam.
That's impossible.
You're crazy.
No. You know what's crazy?
Edgar didn't kill
Irene. You did.
[scoffs] Wow, Jane,
you're very creative.
Write that one
yourself, did you?
You murdered Irene because
she found out about
your involvement in the
Children's Hospital scam.
And then, you set up Edgar,
who was the perfect suspect
with built in motive.
Thanks for thinking of me
Jane, but I can't take credit
for that fantastical
story you just made up.
You are a crime writer who
created the perfect crime.
You're the one who isn't
who they say they are, Jane!
You're not Irene's
friend, you're just some
amateur detective wannabe.
And you're obsessed with me and
you're manipulating
Detective Cameron.
And you're making some
serious allegations here.
I have a source who
says you killed Irene.
Enough with your
sources, Sophie.
We all know it's a
lie! Just give it up!
Jane, what are you doing?
Stand back.
[Sophie] Put the knife away!
No! Noooo!
[smashes]
[static]
Your detective
can't save you now.
Well, he already
heard everything.
He heard you accuse me
of a crime with no proof
and then attack me with a knife.
But he won't be hearing
anything else from you.
[Sophie] Because I had to
kill you in self defense.
So. The farce is up, Jane.
You're about to become
the news story now
and I'll print the exclusive!
Okay, okay! All
right! You're right.
You got me.
I'm, I'm just an
amateur detective
and I have no idea
what I'm doing.
I don't even know
how I got this far.
How I pieced all of it together.
But, just humor me,
okay? Just one question.
Irene had $150,000 deposited
into her bank account
when she disappeared.
Was she blackmailing
you or was she in on it?
Irene was a liar! She
didn't want the money.
She pretended to work
alongside Angela,
but she was only
collecting evidence.
When she discovered
my involvement,
she agreed to take the $150K
to keep quiet about it all,
but then she used the money
as proof of the scheme
and to expose me.
I knew the second she said that
junk about the power of words
on the game show that
she'd turn on us.
She wasn't going to keep
quiet like she said she would.
Doughnut!
What?
[gun shot]
[gun shot]
[struggling]
Nice work!
Thanks.
Hands behind your back here.
You know, we got your friend
Angela in handcuffs too.
Yeah, you always got to
stay one step ahead, Sophie.
Come on. Let's go.
Jane! Thank goodness
you're okay.
[Craig] How are you feeling?
Well, a little tired
but mostly relieved.
I think the police have
a really strong case
against Angela and Sophie
thanks to Sophie's confession
and Irene's detailed notes.
In the end, Irene won.
She always got the last word.
Yeah.
Well, again, I'm so sorry
for your loss, Craig.
Please give my
regards to your mom.
At least we know the
truth about what happened
and she can grieve for
her sister in peace now.
Yeah. Well, I hope you
all get some time to
find some peace and heal.
I know it's what Irene
would have wanted.
Thank you for finding
us some answers.
Of course.
And you can rest assured,
Irene was a whistleblower
not a blackmailer.
She had a strong moral
compass and was just
investigating the investigators.
With my portion of
the inheritance,
we're going to develop a new
digital newsfeed devoted to
exposing those who exploit
others and serving justice.
Just like Irene
had always wanted.
We?
Irene brought Craig
and I together,
so we're going to build the
network and run it as partners.
Well, it sounds like Irene is
leaving behind quite the legacy.
Oh. I brought some
treats for Perry.
Thanks. He's going
to love them.
He's settled in at my mom's.
She says Perry is
quite the good company.
Oh. This is for Sadie.
A check for the
Children's Hospital.
Once I reported about the
Hospital charity scandal people
across the city reached out and
donations started flooding in.
Wow. Thank you.
I guess there still is some good
news to report on in the world.
Thankfully, it's not
all trolls out there.
If you'll excuse me I have
a Gala I need to get to.
Although there has been
a slight change of venue.
See you later.
[upbeat music: "Star Up"
performed by Jodie Sweetin]
When the clouds turn gray
and raindrops start to fall
I tell myself today
I got to give my all
Coz today is the day that I
Put my star up in the sky
And ain't no rainstorm
going to tell me otherwise
You're right, she is pretty.
Well, if you think she's pretty,
wait till you talk to her.
She's even more smart!
I knew it.
So my star is going fly
Gonna make you
wait up high
Say hello and say good bye
My darling
And I know that
every Jack and Jill
Has a star rolling
up that hill
Others keep it on
their windowsill
For passersby
I'll just put my
star up in the sky
I'll just put my
star up in the sky
- [song ends]
- [cheering and clapping]
[cheering and clapping]
Hey.
Oh, hey.
I was hoping to get a
moment alone with you.
- Oh really?
- Yeah.
When you were wearing the
mic pack the other night
you mentioned something about
wanting to reschedule our date?
Well, I figured with the
Gala canceled, you know...
Right. I don't think
we should reschedule.
Oh. Okay.
I think this is
the perfect date.
[they both chuckle]
I mean, for starters
you look incredible.
Thank you.
And with the kids I get
to see you be brilliant
in a whole different light.
You really go above and
beyond everything you do.
Yeah, it's too bad, I mean,
you've really set the bar
really high for yourself
for a second date.
Hmmm. Well, that is a
challenge I'm willing to take.
And I have to say you look
pretty nice yourself, you know.
That tux really,
ah, it suits you.
Come on. That was a great pun.
That was truly terrible. High
praise for a pun, though.
Indeed. And the night is young.
And what do you
say? You wanna...
Maybe clown around with
me for a little while?
How did you...
See. Always come prepared.
Oh, yeah.
Let's go.
