Toby Keith: American Icon (2024) Movie Script
Nashville, please welcome
Carrie Underwood.
I was getting kind of tired
of her endless chatter
And nothing I could say
ever seemed to matter
So I took a little drive
just to clear my head
I saw flashing neon
up ahead
It looked like the place
to find some satisfaction
With a little less talk
and a lot more action
I paid a man at the door
and pushed my way to the bar
Shouted for a drink
over a screaming guitar
A drunk on the stool
tried to mess with my head
But I didn't even listen
to a word he said
I know somewhere amid
all this distraction
Was a little less talk
and a lot more action
A little less talk
if you please
A lot more lovin'
is what I need
Let's get on down
to the main attraction
With a little less talk
and a lot more action
Nashville!
We are all here for one reason,
this incredible man,
the Big Dog Daddy,
my Oklahoma friend and brother.
This is a celebration
for Toby Keith,
his music, his heart, his life.
Everyone on this stage tonight
loves Toby,
and I know you all do, too,
so raise 'em up.
Tonight, we're giving him
a party he'd be proud of,
and we're gonna do it
with a little less talk
and a lot more action.
Well, she was fighting
them off at a corner table
She had a long neck bottle
She was peeling the label
The look on her face,
it was perfectly clear
She said somebody
please get me out of here
The look she shot me
Through the glass
refraction said
A little less talk
and a lot more action
A little less talk
if you please
A lot more lovin'
is what I need
Let's get on down
to the main attraction
With a little less talk
and a lot more action
A little less talk
A lot more action
Let's get on down
to the main attraction
With a little less talk
and a lot more action
Get on down
to the main attraction
With a little less talk
And a lot more action
Yeah
Yeah
This is "Toby Keith:
American Icon,"
with performances by...
Now to kick off
a night of stories,
songs, and celebration,
please welcome Jelly Roll!
Bridgestone!
We have a whole night
of memories and music,
all of it to celebrate
a true original,
an icon, Mr. Toby Keith!
And, man, let me tell y'all,
there is a lot to celebrate.
We can celebrate
the music first.
We're talking about
33 number one singles.
We're talking about
44 million albums sold.
We're talking about
10 billion streams,
and that's with a B, baby.
Most importantly,
we are talking about songs
that will live forever,
but there were so many
other sides to Toby.
He went from the oil fields
to stadiums,
from boardrooms to Baghdad.
And this is the most Toby-est
stage you have ever seen.
We got members
of the military up there.
And of course,
we got the hometown bar rocking
with my friend, Priscilla Block.
Last but not least,
Toby's family.
How about a hand,
most importantly,
for the family tonight?
Toby loved his family,
his country,
and helping those in need.
Y'all are keeping that going
tonight because the proceeds
from this event are going to
Toby's OK Kids Korral
and Monroe Carell Jr.'s
Children's Hospital
at Vanderbilt.
Now let's bring out a man
who knew and loved Toby.
Make some noise for one
of the last outlaws left,
Mr. Eric Church!
I... about...
I'ma take you back in time.
I was starting my career,
and I...
we were having a hard time
getting anybody in country music
to let us come play shows
with them,
and Toby Keith was the guy
that called and said,
"Hey, why don't you go
play shows with me?
There is no way
I'm standing here today
if it wasn't for Toby Keith.
And this next song,
I think of a lot.
I have two young boys.
I may think of it a lot
tonight as I try
to wander down to Broadway
like I shouldn't do.
And I can promise you this,
I'm not as good as I once was.
But tonight...
tonight, I'm gonna be,
I promise you that.
She said I seen you
in here before
I said I've been here
a time or two
She said hello
my name is Bobbi Jo
Meet my twin sister
Betty Lou
And we're both feeling
kind of wild tonight
You're the only cowboy
in this place
And if you're up
for a rodeo
I'll put a big Texas smile
on your face
I said, girls, I ain't
as good as I once was
I got a few years
on me now
But there was a time
back in my prime
When I could
really lay 'em down
And if you need
some love tonight
Hey, I might have
just enough
I ain't as good
as I once was
But I'm as good once
as I ever was
Ah, yeah, baby
I still hang out with
my best friend Hardy
Yeah, I've known him since
we were kids in school
Last night,
we had a few shots
Got in a tight spot
hustling a game of pool
With a couple
of redneck boys
And one great big bad
biker man
I heard David yell
across the room
Hey, buddy, how about
a helping hand?
I said, Dave
I ain't as good
as I once was
My, how the years
have flown
But there was a time
back in my prime
When I could really
hold my own
But if you want
to fight tonight
Guess them boys
don't look all that tough
I ain't as good
as I once was
But I'm as good once
as I ever was
I used to be hell on wheels
Back when I was
a younger man
Now my body says
you can't do this, boy
But my pride says,
oh, yes, you can
I ain't as good
as I once was
That's just the cold
hard truth, baby
I still throw a few back
And talk a little smack
when I'm feeling bulletproof
So don't double dog
dare me now
'Cause I might have
to call your bluff
I ain't as good
as I once was
But I'm as good once
as I ever was
May not be good
as I once was
But nobody was better
than Toby Keith was
Yeah
Tonight, Lainey, Luke,
Ashley, Darius,
and more of Toby's
friends and family
gather to honor
a country legend.
Oh, I should've been
a cowboy
Plus, Toby's moving
final performance
and a historic finale
as country's biggest stars
honor the Big Dog Daddy.
One of my first big tours
was opening for Toby Keith
back in 2007.
Toby was the real deal
and never made excuses.
He just was really
in his own lane,
and that's always good
for other artists to see
is somebody that just
really knows who they are
and really chases it
with all gusto
and is authentic to themselves.
Bridgestone,
give a warm welcome to one
of country's biggest voices,
Darius Rucker.
Thank y'all.
When I first came to Nashville
Toby was one of the first guys
to reach out to me
and tell me how welcome I was
and how he was glad I was here.
He was a class act.
I'm honored to be here.
I thank you guys
so much for that.
So I want to sing
my favorite Toby Keith song.
Just a girl born in Dixie
Washed in the blood
And raised on the banks
Of the Mississippi mud
She always had a thing
About falling in love
with a bad boy
And you could
see it all coming
But her daddy never dreamed
She'd grow up that fast
You know what I mean
The way a girl gets
when she turns 17
Kind of crazy
Well, she's a rebel child
And a preacher's daughter
She was baptized
in dirty water
Her mama cried
the first time
They caught her with me
They knew
they couldn't stop her
She holds tight to me
and the Bible
On the back seat
of my motorcycle
Left her daddy
standing there
Preaching to the choir,
you see
God love her
Both me and God love her
She kissed her mama goodbye
Said I'll be sure
to phone you
She called her
from a truck stop
In Tucson, Arizona
With amazing grace
She made California line
And then my gypsy life
Started taking its toll
The fast lane got empty
And out of control
And just like an angel
She saved my soul
from the devil
Yeah, she's a rebel child
And a preacher's daughter
She was baptized
in dirty water
Her mama cried
the first time
They caught her with me
They knew
they couldn't stop her
She holds tight
to me and the Bible
On the back seat
of my motorcycle
Left her daddy
standing there
Preaching to the choir,
you see
God love her
Oh, me and God love her
Well, she holds tight
to me and the Bible
On the back seat
of my motorcycle
Left her daddy
standing there
Preaching to the choir,
you see
God love her
Oh, me and God love her
God love her
God love her
Here are two
of the hottest stars
in country right now
with a whole new take
on a Toby classic.
Make some noise for
Riley Green and Ella Langley!
Here you come
knocking on my door
Baby, tell me
what you got on your mind
I guess them college boys
All went home
for the summertime
Yeah, you're looking right,
looking good
Looking like a woman should
So why is it
so hard to find
A place to lay
your pretty little head
Down once in a while?
You run on
a little tough luck, baby
Don't you sweat it
'Cause everything
is waiting inside for you
You know I got it,
so come and get it
Who's your daddy?
Who's your baby?
Who's your buddy?
And who's your friend?
And who's the one guy
that you come running to
When your love life
starts tumbling?
I got the money
if you got the honey
Let's cut a deal
Let's make a plan
Who's your daddy?
Who's your baby?
Who's your buddy?
Who's your man?
You run on
a little tough luck, baby
Don't you sweat it
Everything
is waiting inside
You know I got it
So come and get it
Who's your daddy?
Who's your baby?
Who's your buddy?
And who's your friend?
And who's the one guy
that you come running to
When your love life
starts tumbling?
I got the money
if you got the honey
Let's cut a deal
Let's make a plan
Who's your daddy?
Who's your baby?
Who's your buddy?
Who's your man?
Who's your daddy?
Who's your baby?
Who's your buddy?
Who's your man?
Thank you, Toby Keith,
for all you did
for country music.
We appreciate you.
Toby Keith is a legend!
I only hope to have half
the career he did.
Coming up, Jelly Roll,
Ashley McBryde, and Luke Bryan.
Wearing my six-shooter
You know, they always
called Merle Haggard
the Poet of the Common Man.
I believe Toby picked up
that title from Merle
for the next generations.
Toby, just know that...
We will always love you
Once again, superstar
and humanitarian Darius Rucker.
The only thing bigger than
Toby's talent
and personality was his heart.
His fans and friends
consider ourselves lucky
to have had him, but there
are thousands of others
who feel truly blessed
that Toby was around.
When disaster struck,
troops were far from home,
or children were in need,
Toby was there.
Here's just a small part
of his extraordinary work.
The OK Kids Korral,
it's my greatest achievement
ever outside of my family.
We started our foundation
when a band member
lost their daughter to cancer.
She was diagnosed just after
she turned two
and died just before
she turned three.
So my husband felt
the need to do something.
It took me ten years
to get the money,
but we built the OK Kids Korral.
It's a 16-room Ritz-Carlton
meets Disney World.
We take care of about
300 families a year,
and it's directly across
the street from
the Children's Medical Center.
Toby always had a vision
with the OK Kids Korral.
He wanted the kids to be able
to come and forget
that they're being treated
and having to be
at the hospital all the time.
So it became a home away
from home for these kids.
While children are
undergoing treatment,
families stay here
free of charge
during that
entire cancer journey.
We know that during
a cancer diagnosis,
it is really important
to have family around you
to help you through it.
You can tell how much
OK Kids Korral meant to Toby
when he was in this building.
OK Kids Korral
has taken care of me as well
and my family
in the hardest of times.
Whoa!
On December 7th, his birthday,
doctors came in and told us
that he had leukemia.
If we had to stay in a hotel...
we've been here 30 times...
we would burn through
everything we have.
There is all walks of life
that come in
and out of this door
that are dealing with
the same thing that you are.
You become part of a family.
That's pretty important.
He just lit up every time
he came down here.
And the kids,
they don't know who Toby is.
The parents do.
The kids don't care.
You know, he's just Toby.
The first thing I thought of
when I got cancer was,
"Who's gonna take care
of the Korral?
"Who's gonna raise the money?
Who will carry that torch?"
In the United States,
childhood cancer
affects 42 kids a day.
There's always gonna need to be
an OK Kids Korral.
We thank God all the time
that he decided
to put Toby Keith on this earth.
Toby has big shoes to fill,
but we're all ready
to take on that effort.
Nashville, make some noise
for Ashley McBryde.
Anything Toby Keith sang,
you could believe it because
he only wrote what he believed,
because being a songwriter
is about being truthful.
Whew.
And, Toby, you are truth.
I never ask you
where you're going
I never ask you
where you've been
I've never called
and checked your story
You stayed out
with all your friends
I never tried
to catch you lying
I didn't want
to know the truth
I'd rather go on
loving blind, girl
Than go on loving
without you
I wish I didn't know now
what I didn't know then
I wish I could start
this whole thing over again
I'm not saying that you
would ever be true
I just don't want
to know how it ends
You'd still have my heart
in the palm of your hand
I'd still look like a fool
in front of your friends
Hey, I wish somehow
I didn't know now
What I didn't know then
I've always said
what I don't know
Couldn't hurt as bad
as leaving you
I guess I knew
what I was thinking
It ain't an easy thing
to do
Well, I guess
I should be going
I sure found out
too much to stay
And please don't say
you're sorry
I might wait another day
I wish I didn't know now
what I didn't know then
I wish I could start
this whole thing over again
I'm not saying that you
would ever be true
I just don't want to know
how it ends
You'd still have my heart
in the palm of your hand
I'd still look like a fool
in front of your friends
I wish somehow
I didn't know now
What I didn't know then
You'd still have my heart
in the palm of your hand
I'd still look like a fool
in front of your friends
Hey, I wish somehow
I didn't know now
What I didn't know then
Hey, I wish somehow
I didn't know now
What I didn't know then
Coming up, Lainey makes
a grand entrance
and performs with Jamey Johnson.
Beer for my horses
Toby was a good guy,
a good friend,
and a good songwriter.
He wrote "Beer for My Horses."
And we had a great record
out on that.
And I just loved him a lot.
Please welcome the Heartland's
queen of comedy, Leanne Morgan.
Hello, hello, everybody.
I am honored to be here,
my darling.
I am a fan, just like y'all.
I'm a big Toby Keith fan,
and if I weren't up here,
I'd be out there with y'all.
I was raised 35 miles from here
in a town of 500 people
that grows dark-fired tobacco.
And I would see
country music stars,
huge country music stars
just walking around shopping.
I saw Porter Wagoner
at the mall in broad daylight
in a sequin jacket and a hat
with a little cowboy hat
propped up on his little...
I don't know if that was
a perm or a wig.
I don't know what that was.
And then, y'all,
I got to see Barbara Mandrell
and Louise Mandrell.
I know.
They were at Dillard's
buying bras and panties.
And I was just starstruck,
and my heart
was beating out of my body,
and they had fannies
the size of walnuts
and were buying tiny panties,
but all that meant
so much to me.
And then I grow up,
and I get to be here,
and I want to tell y'all
that I got to see Toby Keith,
one of his last performances
at the People's Choice
Country Awards,
and he blew me away.
He genuinely wanted to make
this life a little bit better,
to make people smile,
and I think we can all say,
mission accomplished.
And now I get to bring out
another big,
multi-talented artist.
She's a singer,
songwriter, actress,
and she's always so cute
in her little britches.
Make some room out here for
that darling Lainey Wilson.
Saddle up, Nashville!
We gonna go for a ride!
Whoo!
Y'all welcome to the stage,
my friend, Mr. Jamey Johnson!
Well, the man come on
the 6:00 news
Says somebody's been shot,
somebody's been abused
Somebody blew up a building
Somebody stole a car
Somebody got away
Somebody didn't get too far
They didn't get too far
What you got, Jamey?
Well, Grampy told my pappy
back in my day, son
A man had to answer for
the wicked that he'd done
Take all the rope in Texas,
find a tall oak tree
Round up all
of them bad boys
Hang them high
in the street
- For all the people to see
- Come on, get up!
That justice is
The one thing
you should always find
You've got to saddle up
your boys
You've got to draw
a hard line
When the gun smoke settles,
we'll sing a victory tune
And we'll all meet back
at the local saloon
We'll raise up our glasses
against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men
And beer for my horses
We got too many gangsters
doing dirty deeds
Too much corruption
and crime in the streets
It's time
the long arm of the law
Put a few more
in the ground
Send them all
to their maker
And he'll settle them
all down
You can bet
he'll settle them down
Whoo!
Well, justice is
The one thing
you should always find
You've got to saddle up
your boys
You've got to draw
a hard line
When the gun smoke settles,
we'll sing a victory tune
And we'll all meet back
at the local saloon
We'll raise up our glasses
against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men
and beer for my horses
Singing whiskey for my men
And beer for my horses
Justice is the one thing
you should always find
You've got to saddle up
your boys
You've got to draw
a hard line
When the gun smoke settles,
we'll sing a victory tune
And we'll all meet back
at the local saloon
We'll raise up our glasses
against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men
and beer for my horses
Singing whiskey for my men
And beer for my horses
We love you, Toby!
Man, Toby was a cowboy
in the best sense of the word.
Always a gentleman
and always down to help
those who needed it the most.
That's why tonight's event
benefits not one,
but two great organizations
helping children
in need of critical care...
Toby's OK Kids Korral
in Oklahoma
and Monroe Carell Jr.
Children's Hospital
at Vanderbilt, which is near
and very dear to my heart.
I wanted to show y'all some
of the great work
that they are doing right here
in Nashville.
When a 75-foot tree
came crashing down
on Judge and Jeff,
my whole world
came crashing down with it.
After two weeks of Judge
being in a coma
and in intensive care
at Monroe Carell Jr.
Children's Hospital
at Vanderbilt, our care team,
who had become like family
to us,
told me he was stabilized.
And that he was ready to start
his rehabilitation journey.
To see Judge now
running and swimming,
hiking is a total
dream come true.
Go ahead and snap that QR code
and keep the good work going.
Funds from tonight's show
will continue the work
OK Kids Korral does in Oklahoma
and will help Monroe Carell
Jr. Children's Hospital
at Vanderbilt
build the first inpatient
rehabilitation center
for kids in all of Tennessee.
Y'all, your support matters.
It truly does.
More from Carrie Underwood,
plus Tyler Hubbard
and a powerful performance
by Krystal Keith and Luke Bryan.
Toby reflected
the best of Oklahoma.
A lot of people dream
of making it big
so they can leave
their hometown.
Toby wanted to make
his hometown bigger,
and when he made it big,
he took the whole state
with him.
When I was around him, he was
a badass country singer,
but I found out later on he had
a really big heart,
as big as Oklahoma.
Toby's talent and ambition
took him around the world,
but his heart
never left Oklahoma.
One of my favorite
conversations with Toby
took place on his tour bus
one night
at the Grand Ole Opry.
That conversation
was largely centered
on our similar hometown roots.
We spoke of how we both
grew up, our families,
and why we both love
the Sooner State so much.
He took Moore, Oklahoma,
with him wherever he went.
You heard it in his songs.
You could feel it
in his swagger,
and you saw it
in his charity work.
Toby would be the first one
to tell you that Oklahoma
made him the man that he was.
And I'll be the first
to tell you
that he more than made
his mark on Oklahoma as well.
Are we ready?
No matter where I go,
if they ask me where I'm from,
I'll say Moore, and if they
want to know where it is,
I'll tell them it's a southern
suburb of Oklahoma City.
It's home to me.
The earliest memories I have
of music are crawling around
on the floor and listening
to my 23-year-old mom
singing Patsy Cline
and how powerful it sounded.
Some music was always woven in,
but I started football
at such a young age.
By the time I got
to ninth grade,
I had already played
seven years.
Just fresh out of high school,
playing semi-pro ball two years.
And then my dad
had a big job waiting
for me in the oil fields.
It was just hard work,
and it made a man out of me.
And then about '83,
the oil boom crashed.
And I mean,
we really hit hard times.
Music was just a hobby.
So I was writing songs
to thrill myself.
And I'm standing there 21,
22 years old going,
"What am I gonna do
with my life?"
The band said,
"Let's take it on the road."
And it was about ten years
before I really wrote
something that was worthy
to play in front of somebody.
So I became a songwriter.
Should've been a cowboy
I should've learned to rope
My first three or four albums,
I was doing
what they told me to do.
You don't look unnatural at all.
- Really?
- No.
But I was still kind of
a B artist,
but I had a album
that I really believed in.
I was like, "I'm gonna start
dressing out of my closet,
start singing my song."
And then my career went...
boom... into the stratosphere.
How do you like me now?
If you keep just doing
what you do
and stay true to it,
every now and then,
it jumps up and rewards you.
How do you like me now?
Everywhere I go,
from Iraq to Japan,
people know that I am
a face of Oklahoma.
I never felt good about
moving to another city
and living there.
When I'm on tour, I'm out
in the rest of the U.S.,
and when I'm home,
I'm raising my family.
And that's the best thing
that's ever happened to me.
What you got?
Whiskey for my men
Beer for my horses
I'm an Okie.
I take a lot of pride
in that, man.
How you Okies doing tonight?
Please welcome a Georgia boy
who became a brother to
our Oklahoma son, Luke Bryan.
How we doing, Nashville?
What an honor to be here
celebrating the best ever.
Toby Keith was just a...
he was just a badass dude.
Hold on.
Let me grab something.
So this hat, this hat has
been hanging in my closet
for probably 15 years,
and my sister down in Georgia
bought me this hat
when I was playing bars
and doing about
ten Toby Keith songs a night.
I used to wear
this hat every night,
and ever since I lost my sister,
I hadn't put this hat on stage
in a lot of years,
and I was walking out
the house, and I said,
"You know what, I'm...
"I'm just an old country boy
from Georgia,
but Toby Keith certainly
made me want to be a cowboy."
And I'm gonna be
a cowboy tonight.
This is for you, Toby!
I bet you never heard
old Marshal Dillon say
Miss Kitty, have you ever
thought of running away?
Settling down,
would you marry me?
If I ask you twice and
begged you pretty please
She'd have said yes
in a New York minute
He never tied the knot
His heart wasn't in it
He just stole a kiss,
and he rode away
He never hung his hat up
at Kitty's place
Should've been a cowboy
Should've learned
to rope and ride
I'd be wearing
my six-shooter
Riding my pony
on a cattle drive
Stealing the
young girls' hearts
Just like Gene and Roy
Singing those
campfire songs
Oh, I should've been
a cowboy
I might have had a sidekick
with a funny name
Running wild
through the hills
Chasing Jesse James
Ending up on
the brink of danger
Riding shotgun
for the Texas Rangers
Go west, young man
Haven't you been told?
California is full of whiskey
and women and gold
Sneaking out all night
beneath the desert stars
With a dream in my eye
and a prayer in my heart
Should've been a cowboy
Should've learned
to rope and ride
Wearing my six-shooter
Riding my pony
on a cattle drive
Stealing the
young girls' hearts
Just like Gene and Roy
Singing those
campfire songs
Oh, I should've been
a cowboy
Hey!
I should've been a cowboy
Should've learned
to rope and ride
Wearing my six-shooter
Riding my pony
on a cattle drive
Stealing the
young girls' hearts
Just like Gene and Roy
Singing those
campfire songs
Oh, I should've been
a cowboy
Oh, I should've been
a cowboy
I should've been a cowboy
Let's all be cowboys tonight.
Come on.
Thank you!
Thank you, Toby!
Coming up, Brett Favre,
Jelly Roll,
HARDY, and Brantley Gilbert.
And next, Jordan Davis
and Clay Walker.
Toby was a role model
for a lot of us
up here for so many reasons.
He had his own record label,
his own mezcal,
and he had his own bar
before anybody up here.
We're gonna celebrate that
right now.
Jordan Davis, you want to
kick it off for us?
We got winners
We got losers
Chain smokers and boozers
And we got yuppies
We got bikers
We got thirsty hitchhikers
And them girls next door
dress up like movie stars
Mm-hmm
I love this bar
Get up!
Now we got cowboys
We got truckers
Broken-hearted fools
and suckers
And we got hustlers
We got fighters
Early birds
and all-nighters
And them veterans
talk about
Their battle scars
Mm-hmm
I love this bar
Come on, now!
I love this bar
It's my kind of place
Just walking through
the front door
Puts a big smile on my face
It ain't too far
Just come as you are
Mm-hmm
I love this bar
Clay Walker, everybody!
Yeah, we got divorcees
and a big bouncer man
An old jukebox
and a real bad band
We got waitresses,
and we got barflies
A dumbass and a wise guy
If you get too drunk
Just sleep out in your car
Reason number 672 why
Mm-hmm
I just love this bar
I love this bar
It's my kind of place
Just strolling through
the dance floor
Puts a big smile on my face
No cover charge
Come as you are
Mm-hmm
I love this bar
Take it away, Clay.
Mm-hmm
We just love this old bar
Come get you a shot, buddy.
God bless you, Toby.
Nashville, one more time,
give it up for Jelly Roll.
I would like to
dedicate this to Tricia,
Shelley, Krystal, Stelen,
and Toby's entire family.
Toby inspired me to be
a better American,
a better human,
a better songwriter,
and with songs like this,
most importantly,
he inspired me
to be a better father.
Under an old brass
paperweight
Is my list of things
to do today
Go to the bank
and the hardware store
Put a new lock
on the cellar door
I cross them off
as I get them done
But when the sun is set
There's still more than
a few things
Left I haven't got to yet
Go for a walk,
say a little prayer
Take a deep breath
of mountain air
Put on my glove
and play some catch
It's time that I
make time for that
Wade the shore, cast a line
Look up
a long-lost friend of mine
Sit on the porch
and give my girl a kiss
Start living, that's
the next thing on my list
Wouldn't change
the course of fate
Cutting grass
just had to wait
'Cause I've got
more important things
Like pushing my kid
on a backyard swing
I won't break my back
for a million bucks
I can't take to my grave
So I put off for tomorrow
What I could get done today
I go for a walk,
say a little prayer
Take a deep breath
of mountain air
Put on my glove
to play some catch
It's time that
I made time for that
Wade the shore, cast a line
Look up an old,
lost friend of mine
Sit on the porch
and give my girl a kiss
Oh, start living
That's the next thing
on my list
Raise a little hell,
laugh till it hurts
Put an extra five
in the plate at church
Called up my folks
just to chat
It's time that
I make time for that
Stay up late and oversleep
Show her
what she means to me
Catch up on all the things
I've always missed
Start living, that's
the next thing on my list
Under an old brass
paperweight
Is my list of things
to do today
We love you, Big Dog Daddy.
Next, Tyler Hubbard
and friends proceed to party,
HARDY, and Brantley Gilbert.
Now give it up for
Super Bowl champion,
Hall of Famer, and dear friend
of Toby's, Brett Favre.
Toby and I first met
in the latter part
of the '96-'97 season when
he sang the national anthem
at our championship game.
It was a sunny 29 degree
below zero day.
Whoo!
And although I was used to it,
Toby definitely wasn't.
We ran on the field.
I slapped Toby
about as hard as I could
slap him on his rear end,
and he later told me
that it hurt so bad,
he almost started crying.
Well, that moment
many years ago solidified
our friendship for life.
Now we're gonna miss you,
brother,
but your music
is going to live on
in parties,
barbecues, tailgates,
fairs, and festivals.
Now here with the men
who wrote this anthem,
the Beavers brothers
and the Warren brothers,
help me give it up
for Tyler Hubbard.
Yeah, red Solo cup,
you're the best receptacle
At barbecues, tailgates,
fairs, and festivals
And you, sir, do not have
a pair of testicles
If you prefer drinking
from glass
Yeah, red Solo cup,
you're cheap and disposable
And in 14 years,
you are decomposable
And unlike my home,
you are not foreclosable
- Freddie Mac can kiss my ass
- Let's go!
Red Solo cup
Come on!
I fill you up
Let's have a party
Let's have a party
I love you, red Solo cup
Hey!
I lift you up
Proceed to party
Proceed to party
Yeah, I really love
how you're easy to stack
But I really hate
how you're easy to crack
When beer runs down
the front of my back
Well, that, my friend,
is just yucky
Come on.
I have to admit that
the ladies get smitten
How sharply my first name,
first name
Is written on you
with a Sharpie
When I get to hitting
on them to help me get lucky
Let's go!
Red Solo cup
Hey!
I fill you up
Let's have a party
Let's have a party
Come on!
Red Solo cup
Hey!
I fill you up
Proceed to party
Proceed to party
Jordan Davis, everybody.
Well, I've seen you
in blue
And I've seen you in yellow
But only you, red,
will do for this fella
For you are the Abbott
to my Costello
And you are the fruit
to my loom
Here we go
Red Solo cup, you're more
than just plastic
You're more than amazing
You're more than fantastic
And believe me
that I'm not the least
Bit sarcastic when I say
Red Solo cup,
you're not just a cup.
- No way.
- No!
- You're a friend.
- A friend.
Speaking of friends,
let's bring a few more friends
on out here.
How about it?
Y'all ready?
HARDY and Jelly Roll,
get out here.
Red Solo cup
Hey!
I fill you up
Let's have a party
Let's have a party
I love you, red Solo cup
I lift you up
Proceed to party
Proceed to party
- I love you, red Solo cup
- That's right
I fill you up
Let's have a party
Let's have a party
Oh, yeah!
That's right.
Solo cup, oh
Solo cup
My little Solo cup
That's right
Toby Keith, we love you, buddy.
Solo cup
Solo cup
Here's to Toby.
Yeah, thank you guys so much.
Still to come, Trace Adkins,
HARDY, Brantley Gilbert,
and a special performance
by Toby's daughter,
Krystal Keith.
My body's
weathered and worn
Y'all make some noise for
HARDY and Brantley Gilbert.
You and I had the opportunity
to record a song with him,
and it was an honor
for us to record that song.
It's an honor for me
to be here tonight.
I just want to thank you guys
so much for sharing
your husband and your dad
and your brother
with folks like us.
And the rest of the world
is a better place for it.
We gonna try to sing
a little bit for you,
- Ms. Patricia.
- Let's have a little fun.
Make some noise, Nashville!
Yeah, I was always
the crazy one
Broke into the stadium
And I wrote your number
on the 50-yard line
You were always a perfect one
and a valedictorian
So under your number,
I wrote
Call for a good time
I only wanted
to get your attention
But you overlooked me
somehow
Besides, you had too many
boyfriends to mention
While I played
my guitar too loud
How do you like me now?
How do you like me now?
Now that I'm on my way
You still think I'm crazy
standing here today?
I couldn't make you love me
But I always dreamed
about living in your radio
How do you like me now?
Get 'em, boy.
Yeah, and I took off
to Tennessee
I heard that you
made fun of me
Never imagined
I'd make it this far
And you married
into money, girl
Ain't it a cruel
and funny world
As he took your dreams
and he tore them apart?
He never comes home
And you're always alone
And your kids hear you
crying down the hall
That alarm clock
starts ringing
Who could that be singing?
It's me, baby,
with your wake-up call
What?
How do you like me now?
How do you like me now?
That I'm on my way
You still think I'm crazy
standing here today?
I couldn't make you love me
But I'll always dreamed
about living in your radio
How do you like me now?
Oh, get it, boys.
Yeah,
how do you like me now?
That I'm on my way
Do you still think I'm crazy
standing here today?
I couldn't make you love me
But I always dreamed
about living in your radio
How do you like me now?
Tell me, baby
All right, preach on
We told y'all
that Toby had one more
great performance for you,
and we are about
to share it right now.
Toby went into the studio
with HARDY
to record a cover
of Joe Diffie's
"Ships That Don't Come In."
It turned out to be
his last studio session.
No one has ever seen
this footage until now.
Backed by Kenny Greenberg
and some of the best musicians
in Nashville,
here is Toby himself doing
"Ships That Don't Come In."
I could tell
he had a tough life
By the way
he sat and stared
And me, I'd come
to push and shove
So I pulled up a chair
We talked of
roads untraveled
We talked of love untrue
Strings that
come unraveled
We were kings
and kindred fools
And just when
I'd hit bottom
That old man
raised his glass
Said at least
we've had our chances
There's those
who never have
So here's
to all the soldiers
Who have ever died in vain
The insane locked up
in them cells
And the homeless
down on Main
To those who stand
on empty shores
And spit against the wind
And those who wait forever
For ships
that don't come in
So here's
to all the soldiers
Who have ever died in vain
The insane locked up
in them cells
And the homeless
down on Main
To those who stand
on empty shores
And spit against the wind
And those who wait forever
For ships
that don't come in
When I was just a...
you know, a baby artist
coming up in the music industry,
Toby was the first major artist
to give me a chance,
and I think it was because
I was a fellow Okie.
I looked up to Toby,
and I learned
a lot from being around him.
Once you were in there,
you were a lifetime member.
There'll never be
another Toby Keith.
Now, it is my honor to bring
someone very special out here.
We have talked about
Toby's music,
his charity, his legacy,
but nothing meant more to him
than his family.
They are the guiding light
behind this event,
and they wanted
to share a few words.
Please welcome Toby's daughter,
Shelley Covel.
I just want to say thank you
to these tremendous artists
and to all of you
for coming together,
celebrating my dad and
continuing his charitable work.
I think he would be having
a heck of a time,
especially knowing that all
of this music,
energy, and love benefits
his OK Kids Korral
and Monroe Carell Jr.
Children's Hospital
at Vanderbilt.
My dad knew that your worth
isn't measured by
what you have,
but by what you give.
It's a lesson he taught us,
and I imagine
all of you as well.
We're all committed
to continuing
dad's legacy through
the Toby Keith Foundation.
Your support today
and in the future
will help us do that.
Now I'm honored to introduce
two absolute legends,
who are also
some of my dad's closest
long-time collaborators...
Scotty Emerick and Mac McAnally,
joined by my sister,
Krystal Keith.
Don't let the old man in
I want to live me some more
You can't leave it
up to him
He's knocking on my door
I knew all of my life
That someday it would end
Get up and go outside
Don't let the old man in
Many moons I have lived
My body's
weathered and worn
Ask yourself
how old would you'd be
If you didn't know
the day you were born
Try to love on your wife
And stay close
to your friends
Toast each sundown
with wine
Don't let the old man in
Mm, mm
Mm
Many moons I have lived
My body's
weathered and worn
Ask yourself
how old would you be
If you didn't know
the day you were born
When he rides up
on his horse
And you feel that cold,
bitter wind
Look out your window
and smile
Don't let the old man in
Look out your window
and smile
Don't let the old man in
Coming up,
General James L. Jones,
Parker McCollum,
and Trace Adkins
salute Toby Keith
and our troops.
Well, I just want to say
that me,
along with millions
of other fans,
miss Toby Keith.
He was such
an influential artist,
such a great patriot
and loved our military
and wrote great songs about them
and supported them,
and God bless you, Toby.
Please welcome
the former Supreme
Allied Commander of Europe
and all NATO forces,
General James L. Jones.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I first met Toby in 2001
when he offered to do
a free concert for marines
in Washington, DC.
He told me that he'd written
a song that was a little edgy
and that in it
he mentioned his father,
who was seriously wounded
in combat
and who'd recently passed away.
He asked me if it would be OK
to try it out
on the audience that evening.
With 3,000 United States Marines
and sailors waiting
with great anticipation...
I told him he could sing
"Mary Had a Little Lamb"
and he'd get a standing ovation.
And the rest is history.
Standing ovation by the troops.
Toby's decision to launch
"Courtesy of the
Red, White, and Blue"...
A song that brought a smile
to millions of fans,
but especially
to the men and women
who wear our nation's cloth.
But Toby Keith
will be remembered
for far more than
his music alone.
16 USO tours, 18 countries,
132 military installations
before countless numbers
of military personnel
far from home
and in dangerous locations.
And now I'm honored
to share a film
that shows the scope of Toby's
dedication to our troops.
Thank you.
How about a warm welcome for
the great American patriot
Mr. Toby Keith?
My dad was a soldier, so
my heart, first and foremost,
was always with the Army.
But getting out here
and meeting all the military,
I've got a whole new respect
for the whole organization.
We just like to bring
a piece of home here
and hope everybody gets
to take time off from the war
and kick back a little bit
and have some entertainment,
just like they would have
at home.
It didn't take very long at all
to realize how appreciative
they are when somebody does
take the time
out of their life
to come over here.
As times progressed,
you get more comfortable
with coming over,
and then your attention
turns more to just making sure
you shake
as many hands and thank
as many people as you can.
That's our job.
Y'all ready to party tonight?
Even if my career at home,
if it was to ever
hit the shore and be done,
I would still find ways
to come do this.
It's just part of my lifestyle.
Thank you, Baghdad.
Give it up for the soldiers
of the 101st
Airborne Division Air Assault.
Ladies and gentlemen,
please welcome
a patriot,
a true country legend,
Trace Adkins!
There's not a whole lot left
for me to say tonight,
I don't think.
I've known Toby for a long time,
and I just remember
that every show he did,
the last thing he said before
he walked off the stage
was never apologize
for being patriotic.
The love and respect that he had
for the men and women
that serve this country,
it was marrow-deep.
It was profound.
It was genuine.
It was real.
And I always respected him
so much for that.
I was proud to have known him
and called him a friend.
Thanks, dog.
We miss you.
I'm just trying
to be a father
Raise a daughter and a son
A lover to their mother
Everything to everyone
Up and at 'em
bright and early
I'm all business in my suit
Yeah, I'm dressed up
for success
From my head down
to my boots
I don't do it for the money
There's bills
that I can't pay
I don't do it for the glory
I just do it anyway
Providing for our futures,
my responsibility
Yeah, I'm real good
under pressure
Being all that I can be
I can't call in sick
on Mondays
When the weekend's been
too strong
I just work straight
through the holidays
Sometimes all night long
You can bet
that I stand ready
When the wolf
growls at the door
Hey, I'm solid
Hey, I'm steady
Hey, I'm true down
to the core
And I will
always do my duty
No matter what the price
I've counted up the cost
I know the sacrifice
Oh, and I don't want
to die for you
But if dying is asked of me
I bear that cross
with honor
'Cause freedom
don't come free
I'm an American soldier
An American
Beside my brothers
and my sisters
I will proudly take a stand
When liberty is in jeopardy
I will always do
what's right
I'm out here
on the front line
Sleep in peace tonight
American soldier
I'm an American
Soldier
I'm an American soldier
An American
Beside my brothers
and my sisters
I will proudly take a stand
When liberty is in jeopardy
I will always do
what's right
I'm out here
on the front lines
Sleep in peace tonight
American soldier
I'm an American
An American
An American
Soldier
An American soldier
Never apologize
for being patriotic.
Next, Parker McCollum
leads an all-star
red, white, and blue finale.
What an amazing night.
I think we did Toby proud.
How about y'all?
Had a heck of a time.
We did a lot of good
for Toby's OK Kids Korral
and Monroe Carell, Jr.
Children's Hospital
at Vanderbilt.
So let's keep it going.
Snap that QR code on the screen.
It's never too late to give.
Now we're gonna close
things out the way
that Toby always does.
And here to lead us,
please welcome
Texas's own Parker McCollum!
What an incredible honor.
Pretty unbelievable
to be here tonight
to get to honor
a great American patriot
and unbelievable family man
and one of the greatest
country music
singer-songwriters to ever live.
It is my absolute honor
to play this song
for you guys right here.
Please help me out
if you know this one.
American girls,
American guys
We'll always stand up
and salute
We'll always recognize
When we see
Old Glory flying
There's a lot of men dead
So we can sleep
in peace at night
When we lay down our heads
My daddy served in the Army
Where he lost his right eye
But he flew a flag
out in our yard
Till the day that he died
He wanted my mother and my
brother and my sister and me
To grow up and live happy
In the land of the free
Now this nation that I love
Has fallen under attack
A mighty sucker punch
came flying in
From somewhere in the back
So if we can see it clearly
through our big black eyes
Man, we lit up your world
Like the 4th of July
Hey, Uncle Sam put your name
at the top of his list
And the Statue of Liberty
started shaking her fist
And an eagle will fly
Yeah, it's gonna be hell
When you hear
Mother Freedom
Start ringing her bell
Yeah, it feels like
the whole wide world
Is raining down on you
Oh, brought to you courtesy
of the red, white, and blue
Oh, justice will be served
And the battle will raise
This big dog gonna fight
when you rattle his cage
You'll be sorry
that you messed with
The U.S. of A
'Cause we'll put a boot
in your ass
It's the American way
Hey, Uncle Sam put your name
at the top of his list
And the Statue of Liberty
started shaking her fist
And an eagle will fly
Then it's gonna be hell
When you hear
Mother Freedom
Start ringing her bell
Yeah, it'll feel like
the whole wide world
Is raining down on you
All brought to you courtesy
Of the red, white, and blue
Whoa
Of the red, white, and blue
Oh
Of the red, white, and blue
Oh
Of the red, white, and blue
Oh
Of the red, white, and blue
Oh
Of the red, white, and blue
Carrie Underwood.
I was getting kind of tired
of her endless chatter
And nothing I could say
ever seemed to matter
So I took a little drive
just to clear my head
I saw flashing neon
up ahead
It looked like the place
to find some satisfaction
With a little less talk
and a lot more action
I paid a man at the door
and pushed my way to the bar
Shouted for a drink
over a screaming guitar
A drunk on the stool
tried to mess with my head
But I didn't even listen
to a word he said
I know somewhere amid
all this distraction
Was a little less talk
and a lot more action
A little less talk
if you please
A lot more lovin'
is what I need
Let's get on down
to the main attraction
With a little less talk
and a lot more action
Nashville!
We are all here for one reason,
this incredible man,
the Big Dog Daddy,
my Oklahoma friend and brother.
This is a celebration
for Toby Keith,
his music, his heart, his life.
Everyone on this stage tonight
loves Toby,
and I know you all do, too,
so raise 'em up.
Tonight, we're giving him
a party he'd be proud of,
and we're gonna do it
with a little less talk
and a lot more action.
Well, she was fighting
them off at a corner table
She had a long neck bottle
She was peeling the label
The look on her face,
it was perfectly clear
She said somebody
please get me out of here
The look she shot me
Through the glass
refraction said
A little less talk
and a lot more action
A little less talk
if you please
A lot more lovin'
is what I need
Let's get on down
to the main attraction
With a little less talk
and a lot more action
A little less talk
A lot more action
Let's get on down
to the main attraction
With a little less talk
and a lot more action
Get on down
to the main attraction
With a little less talk
And a lot more action
Yeah
Yeah
This is "Toby Keith:
American Icon,"
with performances by...
Now to kick off
a night of stories,
songs, and celebration,
please welcome Jelly Roll!
Bridgestone!
We have a whole night
of memories and music,
all of it to celebrate
a true original,
an icon, Mr. Toby Keith!
And, man, let me tell y'all,
there is a lot to celebrate.
We can celebrate
the music first.
We're talking about
33 number one singles.
We're talking about
44 million albums sold.
We're talking about
10 billion streams,
and that's with a B, baby.
Most importantly,
we are talking about songs
that will live forever,
but there were so many
other sides to Toby.
He went from the oil fields
to stadiums,
from boardrooms to Baghdad.
And this is the most Toby-est
stage you have ever seen.
We got members
of the military up there.
And of course,
we got the hometown bar rocking
with my friend, Priscilla Block.
Last but not least,
Toby's family.
How about a hand,
most importantly,
for the family tonight?
Toby loved his family,
his country,
and helping those in need.
Y'all are keeping that going
tonight because the proceeds
from this event are going to
Toby's OK Kids Korral
and Monroe Carell Jr.'s
Children's Hospital
at Vanderbilt.
Now let's bring out a man
who knew and loved Toby.
Make some noise for one
of the last outlaws left,
Mr. Eric Church!
I... about...
I'ma take you back in time.
I was starting my career,
and I...
we were having a hard time
getting anybody in country music
to let us come play shows
with them,
and Toby Keith was the guy
that called and said,
"Hey, why don't you go
play shows with me?
There is no way
I'm standing here today
if it wasn't for Toby Keith.
And this next song,
I think of a lot.
I have two young boys.
I may think of it a lot
tonight as I try
to wander down to Broadway
like I shouldn't do.
And I can promise you this,
I'm not as good as I once was.
But tonight...
tonight, I'm gonna be,
I promise you that.
She said I seen you
in here before
I said I've been here
a time or two
She said hello
my name is Bobbi Jo
Meet my twin sister
Betty Lou
And we're both feeling
kind of wild tonight
You're the only cowboy
in this place
And if you're up
for a rodeo
I'll put a big Texas smile
on your face
I said, girls, I ain't
as good as I once was
I got a few years
on me now
But there was a time
back in my prime
When I could
really lay 'em down
And if you need
some love tonight
Hey, I might have
just enough
I ain't as good
as I once was
But I'm as good once
as I ever was
Ah, yeah, baby
I still hang out with
my best friend Hardy
Yeah, I've known him since
we were kids in school
Last night,
we had a few shots
Got in a tight spot
hustling a game of pool
With a couple
of redneck boys
And one great big bad
biker man
I heard David yell
across the room
Hey, buddy, how about
a helping hand?
I said, Dave
I ain't as good
as I once was
My, how the years
have flown
But there was a time
back in my prime
When I could really
hold my own
But if you want
to fight tonight
Guess them boys
don't look all that tough
I ain't as good
as I once was
But I'm as good once
as I ever was
I used to be hell on wheels
Back when I was
a younger man
Now my body says
you can't do this, boy
But my pride says,
oh, yes, you can
I ain't as good
as I once was
That's just the cold
hard truth, baby
I still throw a few back
And talk a little smack
when I'm feeling bulletproof
So don't double dog
dare me now
'Cause I might have
to call your bluff
I ain't as good
as I once was
But I'm as good once
as I ever was
May not be good
as I once was
But nobody was better
than Toby Keith was
Yeah
Tonight, Lainey, Luke,
Ashley, Darius,
and more of Toby's
friends and family
gather to honor
a country legend.
Oh, I should've been
a cowboy
Plus, Toby's moving
final performance
and a historic finale
as country's biggest stars
honor the Big Dog Daddy.
One of my first big tours
was opening for Toby Keith
back in 2007.
Toby was the real deal
and never made excuses.
He just was really
in his own lane,
and that's always good
for other artists to see
is somebody that just
really knows who they are
and really chases it
with all gusto
and is authentic to themselves.
Bridgestone,
give a warm welcome to one
of country's biggest voices,
Darius Rucker.
Thank y'all.
When I first came to Nashville
Toby was one of the first guys
to reach out to me
and tell me how welcome I was
and how he was glad I was here.
He was a class act.
I'm honored to be here.
I thank you guys
so much for that.
So I want to sing
my favorite Toby Keith song.
Just a girl born in Dixie
Washed in the blood
And raised on the banks
Of the Mississippi mud
She always had a thing
About falling in love
with a bad boy
And you could
see it all coming
But her daddy never dreamed
She'd grow up that fast
You know what I mean
The way a girl gets
when she turns 17
Kind of crazy
Well, she's a rebel child
And a preacher's daughter
She was baptized
in dirty water
Her mama cried
the first time
They caught her with me
They knew
they couldn't stop her
She holds tight to me
and the Bible
On the back seat
of my motorcycle
Left her daddy
standing there
Preaching to the choir,
you see
God love her
Both me and God love her
She kissed her mama goodbye
Said I'll be sure
to phone you
She called her
from a truck stop
In Tucson, Arizona
With amazing grace
She made California line
And then my gypsy life
Started taking its toll
The fast lane got empty
And out of control
And just like an angel
She saved my soul
from the devil
Yeah, she's a rebel child
And a preacher's daughter
She was baptized
in dirty water
Her mama cried
the first time
They caught her with me
They knew
they couldn't stop her
She holds tight
to me and the Bible
On the back seat
of my motorcycle
Left her daddy
standing there
Preaching to the choir,
you see
God love her
Oh, me and God love her
Well, she holds tight
to me and the Bible
On the back seat
of my motorcycle
Left her daddy
standing there
Preaching to the choir,
you see
God love her
Oh, me and God love her
God love her
God love her
Here are two
of the hottest stars
in country right now
with a whole new take
on a Toby classic.
Make some noise for
Riley Green and Ella Langley!
Here you come
knocking on my door
Baby, tell me
what you got on your mind
I guess them college boys
All went home
for the summertime
Yeah, you're looking right,
looking good
Looking like a woman should
So why is it
so hard to find
A place to lay
your pretty little head
Down once in a while?
You run on
a little tough luck, baby
Don't you sweat it
'Cause everything
is waiting inside for you
You know I got it,
so come and get it
Who's your daddy?
Who's your baby?
Who's your buddy?
And who's your friend?
And who's the one guy
that you come running to
When your love life
starts tumbling?
I got the money
if you got the honey
Let's cut a deal
Let's make a plan
Who's your daddy?
Who's your baby?
Who's your buddy?
Who's your man?
You run on
a little tough luck, baby
Don't you sweat it
Everything
is waiting inside
You know I got it
So come and get it
Who's your daddy?
Who's your baby?
Who's your buddy?
And who's your friend?
And who's the one guy
that you come running to
When your love life
starts tumbling?
I got the money
if you got the honey
Let's cut a deal
Let's make a plan
Who's your daddy?
Who's your baby?
Who's your buddy?
Who's your man?
Who's your daddy?
Who's your baby?
Who's your buddy?
Who's your man?
Thank you, Toby Keith,
for all you did
for country music.
We appreciate you.
Toby Keith is a legend!
I only hope to have half
the career he did.
Coming up, Jelly Roll,
Ashley McBryde, and Luke Bryan.
Wearing my six-shooter
You know, they always
called Merle Haggard
the Poet of the Common Man.
I believe Toby picked up
that title from Merle
for the next generations.
Toby, just know that...
We will always love you
Once again, superstar
and humanitarian Darius Rucker.
The only thing bigger than
Toby's talent
and personality was his heart.
His fans and friends
consider ourselves lucky
to have had him, but there
are thousands of others
who feel truly blessed
that Toby was around.
When disaster struck,
troops were far from home,
or children were in need,
Toby was there.
Here's just a small part
of his extraordinary work.
The OK Kids Korral,
it's my greatest achievement
ever outside of my family.
We started our foundation
when a band member
lost their daughter to cancer.
She was diagnosed just after
she turned two
and died just before
she turned three.
So my husband felt
the need to do something.
It took me ten years
to get the money,
but we built the OK Kids Korral.
It's a 16-room Ritz-Carlton
meets Disney World.
We take care of about
300 families a year,
and it's directly across
the street from
the Children's Medical Center.
Toby always had a vision
with the OK Kids Korral.
He wanted the kids to be able
to come and forget
that they're being treated
and having to be
at the hospital all the time.
So it became a home away
from home for these kids.
While children are
undergoing treatment,
families stay here
free of charge
during that
entire cancer journey.
We know that during
a cancer diagnosis,
it is really important
to have family around you
to help you through it.
You can tell how much
OK Kids Korral meant to Toby
when he was in this building.
OK Kids Korral
has taken care of me as well
and my family
in the hardest of times.
Whoa!
On December 7th, his birthday,
doctors came in and told us
that he had leukemia.
If we had to stay in a hotel...
we've been here 30 times...
we would burn through
everything we have.
There is all walks of life
that come in
and out of this door
that are dealing with
the same thing that you are.
You become part of a family.
That's pretty important.
He just lit up every time
he came down here.
And the kids,
they don't know who Toby is.
The parents do.
The kids don't care.
You know, he's just Toby.
The first thing I thought of
when I got cancer was,
"Who's gonna take care
of the Korral?
"Who's gonna raise the money?
Who will carry that torch?"
In the United States,
childhood cancer
affects 42 kids a day.
There's always gonna need to be
an OK Kids Korral.
We thank God all the time
that he decided
to put Toby Keith on this earth.
Toby has big shoes to fill,
but we're all ready
to take on that effort.
Nashville, make some noise
for Ashley McBryde.
Anything Toby Keith sang,
you could believe it because
he only wrote what he believed,
because being a songwriter
is about being truthful.
Whew.
And, Toby, you are truth.
I never ask you
where you're going
I never ask you
where you've been
I've never called
and checked your story
You stayed out
with all your friends
I never tried
to catch you lying
I didn't want
to know the truth
I'd rather go on
loving blind, girl
Than go on loving
without you
I wish I didn't know now
what I didn't know then
I wish I could start
this whole thing over again
I'm not saying that you
would ever be true
I just don't want
to know how it ends
You'd still have my heart
in the palm of your hand
I'd still look like a fool
in front of your friends
Hey, I wish somehow
I didn't know now
What I didn't know then
I've always said
what I don't know
Couldn't hurt as bad
as leaving you
I guess I knew
what I was thinking
It ain't an easy thing
to do
Well, I guess
I should be going
I sure found out
too much to stay
And please don't say
you're sorry
I might wait another day
I wish I didn't know now
what I didn't know then
I wish I could start
this whole thing over again
I'm not saying that you
would ever be true
I just don't want to know
how it ends
You'd still have my heart
in the palm of your hand
I'd still look like a fool
in front of your friends
I wish somehow
I didn't know now
What I didn't know then
You'd still have my heart
in the palm of your hand
I'd still look like a fool
in front of your friends
Hey, I wish somehow
I didn't know now
What I didn't know then
Hey, I wish somehow
I didn't know now
What I didn't know then
Coming up, Lainey makes
a grand entrance
and performs with Jamey Johnson.
Beer for my horses
Toby was a good guy,
a good friend,
and a good songwriter.
He wrote "Beer for My Horses."
And we had a great record
out on that.
And I just loved him a lot.
Please welcome the Heartland's
queen of comedy, Leanne Morgan.
Hello, hello, everybody.
I am honored to be here,
my darling.
I am a fan, just like y'all.
I'm a big Toby Keith fan,
and if I weren't up here,
I'd be out there with y'all.
I was raised 35 miles from here
in a town of 500 people
that grows dark-fired tobacco.
And I would see
country music stars,
huge country music stars
just walking around shopping.
I saw Porter Wagoner
at the mall in broad daylight
in a sequin jacket and a hat
with a little cowboy hat
propped up on his little...
I don't know if that was
a perm or a wig.
I don't know what that was.
And then, y'all,
I got to see Barbara Mandrell
and Louise Mandrell.
I know.
They were at Dillard's
buying bras and panties.
And I was just starstruck,
and my heart
was beating out of my body,
and they had fannies
the size of walnuts
and were buying tiny panties,
but all that meant
so much to me.
And then I grow up,
and I get to be here,
and I want to tell y'all
that I got to see Toby Keith,
one of his last performances
at the People's Choice
Country Awards,
and he blew me away.
He genuinely wanted to make
this life a little bit better,
to make people smile,
and I think we can all say,
mission accomplished.
And now I get to bring out
another big,
multi-talented artist.
She's a singer,
songwriter, actress,
and she's always so cute
in her little britches.
Make some room out here for
that darling Lainey Wilson.
Saddle up, Nashville!
We gonna go for a ride!
Whoo!
Y'all welcome to the stage,
my friend, Mr. Jamey Johnson!
Well, the man come on
the 6:00 news
Says somebody's been shot,
somebody's been abused
Somebody blew up a building
Somebody stole a car
Somebody got away
Somebody didn't get too far
They didn't get too far
What you got, Jamey?
Well, Grampy told my pappy
back in my day, son
A man had to answer for
the wicked that he'd done
Take all the rope in Texas,
find a tall oak tree
Round up all
of them bad boys
Hang them high
in the street
- For all the people to see
- Come on, get up!
That justice is
The one thing
you should always find
You've got to saddle up
your boys
You've got to draw
a hard line
When the gun smoke settles,
we'll sing a victory tune
And we'll all meet back
at the local saloon
We'll raise up our glasses
against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men
And beer for my horses
We got too many gangsters
doing dirty deeds
Too much corruption
and crime in the streets
It's time
the long arm of the law
Put a few more
in the ground
Send them all
to their maker
And he'll settle them
all down
You can bet
he'll settle them down
Whoo!
Well, justice is
The one thing
you should always find
You've got to saddle up
your boys
You've got to draw
a hard line
When the gun smoke settles,
we'll sing a victory tune
And we'll all meet back
at the local saloon
We'll raise up our glasses
against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men
and beer for my horses
Singing whiskey for my men
And beer for my horses
Justice is the one thing
you should always find
You've got to saddle up
your boys
You've got to draw
a hard line
When the gun smoke settles,
we'll sing a victory tune
And we'll all meet back
at the local saloon
We'll raise up our glasses
against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men
and beer for my horses
Singing whiskey for my men
And beer for my horses
We love you, Toby!
Man, Toby was a cowboy
in the best sense of the word.
Always a gentleman
and always down to help
those who needed it the most.
That's why tonight's event
benefits not one,
but two great organizations
helping children
in need of critical care...
Toby's OK Kids Korral
in Oklahoma
and Monroe Carell Jr.
Children's Hospital
at Vanderbilt, which is near
and very dear to my heart.
I wanted to show y'all some
of the great work
that they are doing right here
in Nashville.
When a 75-foot tree
came crashing down
on Judge and Jeff,
my whole world
came crashing down with it.
After two weeks of Judge
being in a coma
and in intensive care
at Monroe Carell Jr.
Children's Hospital
at Vanderbilt, our care team,
who had become like family
to us,
told me he was stabilized.
And that he was ready to start
his rehabilitation journey.
To see Judge now
running and swimming,
hiking is a total
dream come true.
Go ahead and snap that QR code
and keep the good work going.
Funds from tonight's show
will continue the work
OK Kids Korral does in Oklahoma
and will help Monroe Carell
Jr. Children's Hospital
at Vanderbilt
build the first inpatient
rehabilitation center
for kids in all of Tennessee.
Y'all, your support matters.
It truly does.
More from Carrie Underwood,
plus Tyler Hubbard
and a powerful performance
by Krystal Keith and Luke Bryan.
Toby reflected
the best of Oklahoma.
A lot of people dream
of making it big
so they can leave
their hometown.
Toby wanted to make
his hometown bigger,
and when he made it big,
he took the whole state
with him.
When I was around him, he was
a badass country singer,
but I found out later on he had
a really big heart,
as big as Oklahoma.
Toby's talent and ambition
took him around the world,
but his heart
never left Oklahoma.
One of my favorite
conversations with Toby
took place on his tour bus
one night
at the Grand Ole Opry.
That conversation
was largely centered
on our similar hometown roots.
We spoke of how we both
grew up, our families,
and why we both love
the Sooner State so much.
He took Moore, Oklahoma,
with him wherever he went.
You heard it in his songs.
You could feel it
in his swagger,
and you saw it
in his charity work.
Toby would be the first one
to tell you that Oklahoma
made him the man that he was.
And I'll be the first
to tell you
that he more than made
his mark on Oklahoma as well.
Are we ready?
No matter where I go,
if they ask me where I'm from,
I'll say Moore, and if they
want to know where it is,
I'll tell them it's a southern
suburb of Oklahoma City.
It's home to me.
The earliest memories I have
of music are crawling around
on the floor and listening
to my 23-year-old mom
singing Patsy Cline
and how powerful it sounded.
Some music was always woven in,
but I started football
at such a young age.
By the time I got
to ninth grade,
I had already played
seven years.
Just fresh out of high school,
playing semi-pro ball two years.
And then my dad
had a big job waiting
for me in the oil fields.
It was just hard work,
and it made a man out of me.
And then about '83,
the oil boom crashed.
And I mean,
we really hit hard times.
Music was just a hobby.
So I was writing songs
to thrill myself.
And I'm standing there 21,
22 years old going,
"What am I gonna do
with my life?"
The band said,
"Let's take it on the road."
And it was about ten years
before I really wrote
something that was worthy
to play in front of somebody.
So I became a songwriter.
Should've been a cowboy
I should've learned to rope
My first three or four albums,
I was doing
what they told me to do.
You don't look unnatural at all.
- Really?
- No.
But I was still kind of
a B artist,
but I had a album
that I really believed in.
I was like, "I'm gonna start
dressing out of my closet,
start singing my song."
And then my career went...
boom... into the stratosphere.
How do you like me now?
If you keep just doing
what you do
and stay true to it,
every now and then,
it jumps up and rewards you.
How do you like me now?
Everywhere I go,
from Iraq to Japan,
people know that I am
a face of Oklahoma.
I never felt good about
moving to another city
and living there.
When I'm on tour, I'm out
in the rest of the U.S.,
and when I'm home,
I'm raising my family.
And that's the best thing
that's ever happened to me.
What you got?
Whiskey for my men
Beer for my horses
I'm an Okie.
I take a lot of pride
in that, man.
How you Okies doing tonight?
Please welcome a Georgia boy
who became a brother to
our Oklahoma son, Luke Bryan.
How we doing, Nashville?
What an honor to be here
celebrating the best ever.
Toby Keith was just a...
he was just a badass dude.
Hold on.
Let me grab something.
So this hat, this hat has
been hanging in my closet
for probably 15 years,
and my sister down in Georgia
bought me this hat
when I was playing bars
and doing about
ten Toby Keith songs a night.
I used to wear
this hat every night,
and ever since I lost my sister,
I hadn't put this hat on stage
in a lot of years,
and I was walking out
the house, and I said,
"You know what, I'm...
"I'm just an old country boy
from Georgia,
but Toby Keith certainly
made me want to be a cowboy."
And I'm gonna be
a cowboy tonight.
This is for you, Toby!
I bet you never heard
old Marshal Dillon say
Miss Kitty, have you ever
thought of running away?
Settling down,
would you marry me?
If I ask you twice and
begged you pretty please
She'd have said yes
in a New York minute
He never tied the knot
His heart wasn't in it
He just stole a kiss,
and he rode away
He never hung his hat up
at Kitty's place
Should've been a cowboy
Should've learned
to rope and ride
I'd be wearing
my six-shooter
Riding my pony
on a cattle drive
Stealing the
young girls' hearts
Just like Gene and Roy
Singing those
campfire songs
Oh, I should've been
a cowboy
I might have had a sidekick
with a funny name
Running wild
through the hills
Chasing Jesse James
Ending up on
the brink of danger
Riding shotgun
for the Texas Rangers
Go west, young man
Haven't you been told?
California is full of whiskey
and women and gold
Sneaking out all night
beneath the desert stars
With a dream in my eye
and a prayer in my heart
Should've been a cowboy
Should've learned
to rope and ride
Wearing my six-shooter
Riding my pony
on a cattle drive
Stealing the
young girls' hearts
Just like Gene and Roy
Singing those
campfire songs
Oh, I should've been
a cowboy
Hey!
I should've been a cowboy
Should've learned
to rope and ride
Wearing my six-shooter
Riding my pony
on a cattle drive
Stealing the
young girls' hearts
Just like Gene and Roy
Singing those
campfire songs
Oh, I should've been
a cowboy
Oh, I should've been
a cowboy
I should've been a cowboy
Let's all be cowboys tonight.
Come on.
Thank you!
Thank you, Toby!
Coming up, Brett Favre,
Jelly Roll,
HARDY, and Brantley Gilbert.
And next, Jordan Davis
and Clay Walker.
Toby was a role model
for a lot of us
up here for so many reasons.
He had his own record label,
his own mezcal,
and he had his own bar
before anybody up here.
We're gonna celebrate that
right now.
Jordan Davis, you want to
kick it off for us?
We got winners
We got losers
Chain smokers and boozers
And we got yuppies
We got bikers
We got thirsty hitchhikers
And them girls next door
dress up like movie stars
Mm-hmm
I love this bar
Get up!
Now we got cowboys
We got truckers
Broken-hearted fools
and suckers
And we got hustlers
We got fighters
Early birds
and all-nighters
And them veterans
talk about
Their battle scars
Mm-hmm
I love this bar
Come on, now!
I love this bar
It's my kind of place
Just walking through
the front door
Puts a big smile on my face
It ain't too far
Just come as you are
Mm-hmm
I love this bar
Clay Walker, everybody!
Yeah, we got divorcees
and a big bouncer man
An old jukebox
and a real bad band
We got waitresses,
and we got barflies
A dumbass and a wise guy
If you get too drunk
Just sleep out in your car
Reason number 672 why
Mm-hmm
I just love this bar
I love this bar
It's my kind of place
Just strolling through
the dance floor
Puts a big smile on my face
No cover charge
Come as you are
Mm-hmm
I love this bar
Take it away, Clay.
Mm-hmm
We just love this old bar
Come get you a shot, buddy.
God bless you, Toby.
Nashville, one more time,
give it up for Jelly Roll.
I would like to
dedicate this to Tricia,
Shelley, Krystal, Stelen,
and Toby's entire family.
Toby inspired me to be
a better American,
a better human,
a better songwriter,
and with songs like this,
most importantly,
he inspired me
to be a better father.
Under an old brass
paperweight
Is my list of things
to do today
Go to the bank
and the hardware store
Put a new lock
on the cellar door
I cross them off
as I get them done
But when the sun is set
There's still more than
a few things
Left I haven't got to yet
Go for a walk,
say a little prayer
Take a deep breath
of mountain air
Put on my glove
and play some catch
It's time that I
make time for that
Wade the shore, cast a line
Look up
a long-lost friend of mine
Sit on the porch
and give my girl a kiss
Start living, that's
the next thing on my list
Wouldn't change
the course of fate
Cutting grass
just had to wait
'Cause I've got
more important things
Like pushing my kid
on a backyard swing
I won't break my back
for a million bucks
I can't take to my grave
So I put off for tomorrow
What I could get done today
I go for a walk,
say a little prayer
Take a deep breath
of mountain air
Put on my glove
to play some catch
It's time that
I made time for that
Wade the shore, cast a line
Look up an old,
lost friend of mine
Sit on the porch
and give my girl a kiss
Oh, start living
That's the next thing
on my list
Raise a little hell,
laugh till it hurts
Put an extra five
in the plate at church
Called up my folks
just to chat
It's time that
I make time for that
Stay up late and oversleep
Show her
what she means to me
Catch up on all the things
I've always missed
Start living, that's
the next thing on my list
Under an old brass
paperweight
Is my list of things
to do today
We love you, Big Dog Daddy.
Next, Tyler Hubbard
and friends proceed to party,
HARDY, and Brantley Gilbert.
Now give it up for
Super Bowl champion,
Hall of Famer, and dear friend
of Toby's, Brett Favre.
Toby and I first met
in the latter part
of the '96-'97 season when
he sang the national anthem
at our championship game.
It was a sunny 29 degree
below zero day.
Whoo!
And although I was used to it,
Toby definitely wasn't.
We ran on the field.
I slapped Toby
about as hard as I could
slap him on his rear end,
and he later told me
that it hurt so bad,
he almost started crying.
Well, that moment
many years ago solidified
our friendship for life.
Now we're gonna miss you,
brother,
but your music
is going to live on
in parties,
barbecues, tailgates,
fairs, and festivals.
Now here with the men
who wrote this anthem,
the Beavers brothers
and the Warren brothers,
help me give it up
for Tyler Hubbard.
Yeah, red Solo cup,
you're the best receptacle
At barbecues, tailgates,
fairs, and festivals
And you, sir, do not have
a pair of testicles
If you prefer drinking
from glass
Yeah, red Solo cup,
you're cheap and disposable
And in 14 years,
you are decomposable
And unlike my home,
you are not foreclosable
- Freddie Mac can kiss my ass
- Let's go!
Red Solo cup
Come on!
I fill you up
Let's have a party
Let's have a party
I love you, red Solo cup
Hey!
I lift you up
Proceed to party
Proceed to party
Yeah, I really love
how you're easy to stack
But I really hate
how you're easy to crack
When beer runs down
the front of my back
Well, that, my friend,
is just yucky
Come on.
I have to admit that
the ladies get smitten
How sharply my first name,
first name
Is written on you
with a Sharpie
When I get to hitting
on them to help me get lucky
Let's go!
Red Solo cup
Hey!
I fill you up
Let's have a party
Let's have a party
Come on!
Red Solo cup
Hey!
I fill you up
Proceed to party
Proceed to party
Jordan Davis, everybody.
Well, I've seen you
in blue
And I've seen you in yellow
But only you, red,
will do for this fella
For you are the Abbott
to my Costello
And you are the fruit
to my loom
Here we go
Red Solo cup, you're more
than just plastic
You're more than amazing
You're more than fantastic
And believe me
that I'm not the least
Bit sarcastic when I say
Red Solo cup,
you're not just a cup.
- No way.
- No!
- You're a friend.
- A friend.
Speaking of friends,
let's bring a few more friends
on out here.
How about it?
Y'all ready?
HARDY and Jelly Roll,
get out here.
Red Solo cup
Hey!
I fill you up
Let's have a party
Let's have a party
I love you, red Solo cup
I lift you up
Proceed to party
Proceed to party
- I love you, red Solo cup
- That's right
I fill you up
Let's have a party
Let's have a party
Oh, yeah!
That's right.
Solo cup, oh
Solo cup
My little Solo cup
That's right
Toby Keith, we love you, buddy.
Solo cup
Solo cup
Here's to Toby.
Yeah, thank you guys so much.
Still to come, Trace Adkins,
HARDY, Brantley Gilbert,
and a special performance
by Toby's daughter,
Krystal Keith.
My body's
weathered and worn
Y'all make some noise for
HARDY and Brantley Gilbert.
You and I had the opportunity
to record a song with him,
and it was an honor
for us to record that song.
It's an honor for me
to be here tonight.
I just want to thank you guys
so much for sharing
your husband and your dad
and your brother
with folks like us.
And the rest of the world
is a better place for it.
We gonna try to sing
a little bit for you,
- Ms. Patricia.
- Let's have a little fun.
Make some noise, Nashville!
Yeah, I was always
the crazy one
Broke into the stadium
And I wrote your number
on the 50-yard line
You were always a perfect one
and a valedictorian
So under your number,
I wrote
Call for a good time
I only wanted
to get your attention
But you overlooked me
somehow
Besides, you had too many
boyfriends to mention
While I played
my guitar too loud
How do you like me now?
How do you like me now?
Now that I'm on my way
You still think I'm crazy
standing here today?
I couldn't make you love me
But I always dreamed
about living in your radio
How do you like me now?
Get 'em, boy.
Yeah, and I took off
to Tennessee
I heard that you
made fun of me
Never imagined
I'd make it this far
And you married
into money, girl
Ain't it a cruel
and funny world
As he took your dreams
and he tore them apart?
He never comes home
And you're always alone
And your kids hear you
crying down the hall
That alarm clock
starts ringing
Who could that be singing?
It's me, baby,
with your wake-up call
What?
How do you like me now?
How do you like me now?
That I'm on my way
You still think I'm crazy
standing here today?
I couldn't make you love me
But I'll always dreamed
about living in your radio
How do you like me now?
Oh, get it, boys.
Yeah,
how do you like me now?
That I'm on my way
Do you still think I'm crazy
standing here today?
I couldn't make you love me
But I always dreamed
about living in your radio
How do you like me now?
Tell me, baby
All right, preach on
We told y'all
that Toby had one more
great performance for you,
and we are about
to share it right now.
Toby went into the studio
with HARDY
to record a cover
of Joe Diffie's
"Ships That Don't Come In."
It turned out to be
his last studio session.
No one has ever seen
this footage until now.
Backed by Kenny Greenberg
and some of the best musicians
in Nashville,
here is Toby himself doing
"Ships That Don't Come In."
I could tell
he had a tough life
By the way
he sat and stared
And me, I'd come
to push and shove
So I pulled up a chair
We talked of
roads untraveled
We talked of love untrue
Strings that
come unraveled
We were kings
and kindred fools
And just when
I'd hit bottom
That old man
raised his glass
Said at least
we've had our chances
There's those
who never have
So here's
to all the soldiers
Who have ever died in vain
The insane locked up
in them cells
And the homeless
down on Main
To those who stand
on empty shores
And spit against the wind
And those who wait forever
For ships
that don't come in
So here's
to all the soldiers
Who have ever died in vain
The insane locked up
in them cells
And the homeless
down on Main
To those who stand
on empty shores
And spit against the wind
And those who wait forever
For ships
that don't come in
When I was just a...
you know, a baby artist
coming up in the music industry,
Toby was the first major artist
to give me a chance,
and I think it was because
I was a fellow Okie.
I looked up to Toby,
and I learned
a lot from being around him.
Once you were in there,
you were a lifetime member.
There'll never be
another Toby Keith.
Now, it is my honor to bring
someone very special out here.
We have talked about
Toby's music,
his charity, his legacy,
but nothing meant more to him
than his family.
They are the guiding light
behind this event,
and they wanted
to share a few words.
Please welcome Toby's daughter,
Shelley Covel.
I just want to say thank you
to these tremendous artists
and to all of you
for coming together,
celebrating my dad and
continuing his charitable work.
I think he would be having
a heck of a time,
especially knowing that all
of this music,
energy, and love benefits
his OK Kids Korral
and Monroe Carell Jr.
Children's Hospital
at Vanderbilt.
My dad knew that your worth
isn't measured by
what you have,
but by what you give.
It's a lesson he taught us,
and I imagine
all of you as well.
We're all committed
to continuing
dad's legacy through
the Toby Keith Foundation.
Your support today
and in the future
will help us do that.
Now I'm honored to introduce
two absolute legends,
who are also
some of my dad's closest
long-time collaborators...
Scotty Emerick and Mac McAnally,
joined by my sister,
Krystal Keith.
Don't let the old man in
I want to live me some more
You can't leave it
up to him
He's knocking on my door
I knew all of my life
That someday it would end
Get up and go outside
Don't let the old man in
Many moons I have lived
My body's
weathered and worn
Ask yourself
how old would you'd be
If you didn't know
the day you were born
Try to love on your wife
And stay close
to your friends
Toast each sundown
with wine
Don't let the old man in
Mm, mm
Mm
Many moons I have lived
My body's
weathered and worn
Ask yourself
how old would you be
If you didn't know
the day you were born
When he rides up
on his horse
And you feel that cold,
bitter wind
Look out your window
and smile
Don't let the old man in
Look out your window
and smile
Don't let the old man in
Coming up,
General James L. Jones,
Parker McCollum,
and Trace Adkins
salute Toby Keith
and our troops.
Well, I just want to say
that me,
along with millions
of other fans,
miss Toby Keith.
He was such
an influential artist,
such a great patriot
and loved our military
and wrote great songs about them
and supported them,
and God bless you, Toby.
Please welcome
the former Supreme
Allied Commander of Europe
and all NATO forces,
General James L. Jones.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I first met Toby in 2001
when he offered to do
a free concert for marines
in Washington, DC.
He told me that he'd written
a song that was a little edgy
and that in it
he mentioned his father,
who was seriously wounded
in combat
and who'd recently passed away.
He asked me if it would be OK
to try it out
on the audience that evening.
With 3,000 United States Marines
and sailors waiting
with great anticipation...
I told him he could sing
"Mary Had a Little Lamb"
and he'd get a standing ovation.
And the rest is history.
Standing ovation by the troops.
Toby's decision to launch
"Courtesy of the
Red, White, and Blue"...
A song that brought a smile
to millions of fans,
but especially
to the men and women
who wear our nation's cloth.
But Toby Keith
will be remembered
for far more than
his music alone.
16 USO tours, 18 countries,
132 military installations
before countless numbers
of military personnel
far from home
and in dangerous locations.
And now I'm honored
to share a film
that shows the scope of Toby's
dedication to our troops.
Thank you.
How about a warm welcome for
the great American patriot
Mr. Toby Keith?
My dad was a soldier, so
my heart, first and foremost,
was always with the Army.
But getting out here
and meeting all the military,
I've got a whole new respect
for the whole organization.
We just like to bring
a piece of home here
and hope everybody gets
to take time off from the war
and kick back a little bit
and have some entertainment,
just like they would have
at home.
It didn't take very long at all
to realize how appreciative
they are when somebody does
take the time
out of their life
to come over here.
As times progressed,
you get more comfortable
with coming over,
and then your attention
turns more to just making sure
you shake
as many hands and thank
as many people as you can.
That's our job.
Y'all ready to party tonight?
Even if my career at home,
if it was to ever
hit the shore and be done,
I would still find ways
to come do this.
It's just part of my lifestyle.
Thank you, Baghdad.
Give it up for the soldiers
of the 101st
Airborne Division Air Assault.
Ladies and gentlemen,
please welcome
a patriot,
a true country legend,
Trace Adkins!
There's not a whole lot left
for me to say tonight,
I don't think.
I've known Toby for a long time,
and I just remember
that every show he did,
the last thing he said before
he walked off the stage
was never apologize
for being patriotic.
The love and respect that he had
for the men and women
that serve this country,
it was marrow-deep.
It was profound.
It was genuine.
It was real.
And I always respected him
so much for that.
I was proud to have known him
and called him a friend.
Thanks, dog.
We miss you.
I'm just trying
to be a father
Raise a daughter and a son
A lover to their mother
Everything to everyone
Up and at 'em
bright and early
I'm all business in my suit
Yeah, I'm dressed up
for success
From my head down
to my boots
I don't do it for the money
There's bills
that I can't pay
I don't do it for the glory
I just do it anyway
Providing for our futures,
my responsibility
Yeah, I'm real good
under pressure
Being all that I can be
I can't call in sick
on Mondays
When the weekend's been
too strong
I just work straight
through the holidays
Sometimes all night long
You can bet
that I stand ready
When the wolf
growls at the door
Hey, I'm solid
Hey, I'm steady
Hey, I'm true down
to the core
And I will
always do my duty
No matter what the price
I've counted up the cost
I know the sacrifice
Oh, and I don't want
to die for you
But if dying is asked of me
I bear that cross
with honor
'Cause freedom
don't come free
I'm an American soldier
An American
Beside my brothers
and my sisters
I will proudly take a stand
When liberty is in jeopardy
I will always do
what's right
I'm out here
on the front line
Sleep in peace tonight
American soldier
I'm an American
Soldier
I'm an American soldier
An American
Beside my brothers
and my sisters
I will proudly take a stand
When liberty is in jeopardy
I will always do
what's right
I'm out here
on the front lines
Sleep in peace tonight
American soldier
I'm an American
An American
An American
Soldier
An American soldier
Never apologize
for being patriotic.
Next, Parker McCollum
leads an all-star
red, white, and blue finale.
What an amazing night.
I think we did Toby proud.
How about y'all?
Had a heck of a time.
We did a lot of good
for Toby's OK Kids Korral
and Monroe Carell, Jr.
Children's Hospital
at Vanderbilt.
So let's keep it going.
Snap that QR code on the screen.
It's never too late to give.
Now we're gonna close
things out the way
that Toby always does.
And here to lead us,
please welcome
Texas's own Parker McCollum!
What an incredible honor.
Pretty unbelievable
to be here tonight
to get to honor
a great American patriot
and unbelievable family man
and one of the greatest
country music
singer-songwriters to ever live.
It is my absolute honor
to play this song
for you guys right here.
Please help me out
if you know this one.
American girls,
American guys
We'll always stand up
and salute
We'll always recognize
When we see
Old Glory flying
There's a lot of men dead
So we can sleep
in peace at night
When we lay down our heads
My daddy served in the Army
Where he lost his right eye
But he flew a flag
out in our yard
Till the day that he died
He wanted my mother and my
brother and my sister and me
To grow up and live happy
In the land of the free
Now this nation that I love
Has fallen under attack
A mighty sucker punch
came flying in
From somewhere in the back
So if we can see it clearly
through our big black eyes
Man, we lit up your world
Like the 4th of July
Hey, Uncle Sam put your name
at the top of his list
And the Statue of Liberty
started shaking her fist
And an eagle will fly
Yeah, it's gonna be hell
When you hear
Mother Freedom
Start ringing her bell
Yeah, it feels like
the whole wide world
Is raining down on you
Oh, brought to you courtesy
of the red, white, and blue
Oh, justice will be served
And the battle will raise
This big dog gonna fight
when you rattle his cage
You'll be sorry
that you messed with
The U.S. of A
'Cause we'll put a boot
in your ass
It's the American way
Hey, Uncle Sam put your name
at the top of his list
And the Statue of Liberty
started shaking her fist
And an eagle will fly
Then it's gonna be hell
When you hear
Mother Freedom
Start ringing her bell
Yeah, it'll feel like
the whole wide world
Is raining down on you
All brought to you courtesy
Of the red, white, and blue
Whoa
Of the red, white, and blue
Oh
Of the red, white, and blue
Oh
Of the red, white, and blue
Oh
Of the red, white, and blue
Oh
Of the red, white, and blue
