Welcome to Glenbogle.
Although it's not Glenbogle.
It is Glenbogle, isn't it? No, it's- Ardverikie is the real house.
- It's not Glenbogle, Dawn.
- Honestly, I'm afraid Glenbogle is fictitious.
Woman: Well, Glenbogle or not, the scenery certainly Looks like the setting for the BBC drama "Monarch of the Glen.
" ( theme music playing ) Even though I'm Scottish, I don't know this area very well, But what I do know is this is the make-believe Glenbogle.
Or as it's really known, the Ardverikie Estate In the Spey Valley of the Highlands.
But does a drama location Live up to its fiction when it's your holiday spot? Loch Laggan Beach pops up in the drama on a regular basis, But, as it's a private estate, if you want to frolic on these sands, You need to rent one of the cottages or the gatehouse.
Not recommended if you have a fear of stairs Or if you have small children because this nifty little spiral staircase Works its way from the top to the bottom of the tower.
For anyone with a Rapunzel fixation though, it is a priority.
Be warned, it books out very early in the year.
It only I'd know this house was so popular, I'd have put some more lipstick on.
Even if you are staying on the estate, The house we all know as Glenbogle House is strictly out of bounds.
It's a private residence.
Here's a little tip from us for you- If you drive along the main road past the estate gates, Eventually you'll come to a loch and if you look across, You'll get a glimpse of the house.
Isn't that impressive? But where's Glenbogle village? I asked "Monarch of the Glen's" Laird, Alastair Mackenzie.
How much of the local area has actually been used for filming? Um, quite a lot of it, yeah.
Last week we were filming in Newtonmore.
It was a scene where Hector, Golly and myself Were getting a haircut at the local barbers.
And they built this set that said "Gentlemen's Hairdressers" And we had people coming up, trying to make appointments For a haircut.
Someone very smart has put together this brochure Which you can get in any of the shops or the local tourist office.
And it shows you where to find all the buildings that are used in the drama.
Now in here it says that you can find Glenbogle Town Hall Which in fact turns out to be Kingussie Town Hall.
And 10 miles down the road, This was Glenbogle's funeral directors.
In reality, Laggan Craft Shop.
Well, you definitely need a car up here.
The Glenbogle village scenes are actually locations In four different villages spread over 15 miles From the estate.
That's just the drama locations.
Then there's a load of scenery they haven't got around to filming yet.
I checked in with the Glen's irascible Hector.
- Amazing barracks, aren't they? Extraordinary.
- They're so impressive.
They've been here for - since the Jacobite times I think.
- Really? I've only been here once before.
- Quite impressive.
And of course, very sinister at night.
If you've got the rest of the day off, what do you plan to do? I don't shoot, I don't fish, I don't like walking up hills, so I'm very limited.
And I'm the oldest man in the company So occasionally I get up to Kingussie Golf Course, which I love.
- So there is a golf course.
- I'm a terrible golfer.
But it gets me going- like having a dog.
And for the non-golfers, Loch Insh, a 40-minute drive from the estate, Invites the brave to splash around.
I caught up with Dawn Steele Better known as Lexie, the housekeeper with attitude.
Have you ever done any kind of activity like this down here? I've never actually done that, all I've done is sit up there and have some lunch.
But it's nice to kind of- you sit up there And you can see everything that's happening.
It's more families that are here.
But I've never had the guts to get that wetsuit on And get out there just yet.
The most important question, what is there to do at nighttime? There's the odd karaoke evening, and The Tipsy Lairds Have been known to get up and sing a few tunes.
( laughing ) So, fairly quiet nights in the local area.
During the summer, Newtonmore 15 miles from the estate Hosts a weekly pipe band, and you can always eat out In the restaurant there, or one of the small hotels.
There are plenty of outdoor activities in the area, But if you're not the active type, there's always spectator sport.

So, you a fan of shinty then, Hamish? Yeah, insofar as when we're up here It's difficult to get away from it.
So if you know what's good for you, you're a fan.
( laughing ) I mean, look at them! Don't mess with the shinty players.
If someone was to come on holiday here, Have you got a top tip for something they definitely need to remember to bring, Or something they need to do while they're here? To bring a book, because when you come up here, There's all this to charge around and do and be part of.
But it's really quite important to try to let it be.
So that anything that's gonna keep your- Peace, would be what I'd say.
And a final word from Glenbogle's matriarch.
- This is Loch Laggan, it's beautiful, isn't it? - Isn't it lovely? - Have you been in there? - No, but Richard was in there last year.
He had to do some sequences where he was supposed to be drowning.
Archie comes and rescues him, but I have never been in the loch.
- Was he frozen? - Well, it's very dangerous.
Because if you stay in too long, there comes a moment when you actually Could get hypothermia and die, so the nurse was standing by, And as soon as he said, "oh, I don't feel cold anymore," She said, "you must come out immediately," because that's when it's dangerous.
Everyday, the scenery becomes different.
It just suddenly seems as if we've never seen it before.
It is so beautiful.
Let's be honest though, a holiday in the area of a drama location Doesn't necessarily mean you'll be tripping over the elite players all the time.
This is Coologh and she's a bit of a star Because she had a very important role in "Monarch of the Glen.
" And if you want a guaranteed way To meet a very important cast member, like Coologh here, Then it's going to cost you about £12 for a pony trek.
Hey, Coologh, any chance of an autograph? - ( pony snorts ) - ( laughs )
