1 Some things I've never told you.
About my father.
[suspenseful music.]
He left us when I was six years old.
[muffled gunshots.]
He was a bad man.
He was deep undercover for the NYPD.
He got in too deep.
Forgot which side he was fighting for.
Then one night, in 1996, he didn't check in.
They found his body in the East River two days after my eighth birthday.
Some said his death was a tragedy.
Others said he got exactly what he deserved.
And all my life, I hated him for it.
For leaving us, for going bad, and all my life, I was trying to cover up this stain.
Now I don't know what to think.
What happened? I spoke to him.
Your father? [thunder rumbles.]
When? Last night.
- In a dream? - It wasn't a dream.
Then what was it? [Bahamas' "Lost in the Light" playing.]
Happy birthday.
[chuckles.]
[cell phone ringing.]
I'm seriously thinking about calling myself "The Kissing Bandit.
" - Thoughts? - Sure.
Detective Sullivan.
Yeah.
Okay.
What what's the location? Uh, yeah, how many deceased? Holy crap.
Yeah no, sorry.
Um, yeah, I'll be there in 30 minutes.
So? - What? - "The Kissing Bandit.
" Even countin' sheep I love it.
- Mm-hmm.
Yeah? - Yeah.
What're you thinking, Detective? Natural causes? Yeah, 'cause everybody dies naturally dumped in a swamp.
Push out the canvass another mile Dog-walkers, bird-watchers.
There's got to be someone old as these bones still around.
You got it, Detective.
All right, go see Sullivan and Johnson.
Everything all right, Lieutenant? Oh, yeah.
Knee-deep in the marsh, what's not to love? [chuckles.]
Happy birthday, kid.
Thanks, Satch.
So how's pretty boy? - Daniel? He's fine.
- Mm.
I'm meeting his parents in a few days.
First meeting with the parents, huh? That is big, right? You might not want to hear this, but I think your pops would really actually like this guy.
You're right, I don't want to hear it.
- It's been 20 years, Raim.
- No, that how long it's been? At some point, you're gonna have to catch the man a break.
Make peace.
I'll do that.
[dramatic music.]
Re-anticipate this massive electrical storm, which we've been reporting about over the past few days.
Mom, you don't live here anymore.
You don't need to cook.
- And you're working graveyard? - Oh, stop.
Come here, birthday girl.
Happy birthday.
Look at you, Nurse of the Year.
- Where's Daniel? - No clue.
I sent him and Gordo out to the garage for beer an hour ago.
Hey, hey, hey.
You want to finally tell me why you were blowing up my phone all day? You can't freak.
- You're pregnant.
- What'd I just say? All right, you don't want to tell me, don't tell me.
I found a ring.
In his dopp kit.
[laughs.]
Holy crap.
That's what I said.
Yeah.
Come here.
Who left the watt cables? You realize that thing hasn't worked in 20 years, right? Don't give up on me, Gordo.
What're you doing? Yep, she's pissed.
Hey, Raim.
Hey, you know what I was thinkin'? Labor Day, 1999, Eddie O'Neal asked if you were a boy or a girl.
- You kicked his ass.
- Seriously? - You're playing that card? - Mm-hmm.
Did you really think I'd be okay with this? Do you really think this was my idea? I tried to tell him.
Hey.
Did you know that there was a ham radio in the garage? I did.
Oh, I used to love these things when I was a kid, you know? Before the Internet or cell phones.
I mean, you could talk to anyone in the world with one of these things.
I'm gonna get this thing working, and then you and Gordo Daniel stop.
The ham's in the garage because I want it in the garage.
It was my father's.
Gordo, you understand? I understand there's cake and I like cake and I really would like to like that cake - Gordo.
- Yeah.
Gonna go.
Okay, no ham radio.
Guess we've got cake.
[all.]
Happy birthday to you Happy birthday dear Raimy - There we go with - [all.]
Happy birthday to you [cheers and applause.]
My dad loved that ham.
We used to spend hours in the garage trying to bounce signals off the moon.
- Find the space shuttle "Discovery.
" - He used to say if you did it right, you could talk to astronauts on the space shuttle.
He was my hero.
My friend.
[young Raimy giggling.]
And then he went undercover to save the world.
- He and my mom broke up, and - Please, Daddy, don't go.
And then he died.
And I realized he was something else entirely.
[thunder rumbling.]
That's the most you've ever told me about your father.
- That's not true.
- Yeah it is.
[thunder crashing.]
[wind howling, thunder crashing.]
[electricity crackling.]
[radio static.]
[thunder rumbling.]
CQ? CQ calling CQ, this is WQ2YV.
Is this frequency clear? This is WQ, CQ.
Calling CQ, this is WQ2YV.
Is this, uh, is this frequency clear? [radio static.]
This is WQ2YV.
- Uh, Whiskey, Quebec - Hello? [radio static.]
Hello? Hey! Hey, what's, uh, what's your call? I'm sorry, I didn't even know this thing was working.
Ah, it's no problem.
Where you from? Queens, New York.
Get out! Bayside, born and bred.
Right here.
[chuckles.]
You a Mets fan? Was.
I don't follow baseball much anymore.
Yeah, but still, you got to love watching the Yanks get slapped around, right? The Yankees? Who doesn't? Yeah, I mean, Maddux was was incredible tonight.
[radio static.]
Okay? Greg Maddux? As in, Atlanta Braves, Greg Maddux? Uh, as in game two.
Come on, Queens, you're breaking my heart here.
Naw, naw, I get it.
Yanks/Braves, World Series.
In 1996.
There you go.
As in game three, Bernie Williams jacks a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth.
Yanks take the Series in six.
[laughs.]
But you don't follow baseball.
Okay, yeah, no.
Let's do it.
I'm good for 20 on that.
It's not a prediction.
Queens, you seem nice, you do, but my eight-year-old daughter has a better chance of talking to shuttle astronauts than the Yanks do at taking the Series.
Your daughter what was that part about your daughter? [radio static.]
Oh, she, um she turned eight today.
So I guess she's on my mind, you know? What's your name? [thunder rumbles.]
Frank.
Frank from Queens.
Yup, finally we agree on something, huh? Who the hell is this? Sorry, what? [radio static crackling.]
Hello? [radio crackling.]
Hello! Hello? Queens, you out there? Eh.
Or not.
[radio static.]
[Oasis' "Wonderwall" playing.]

Wonderwall I said maybe So what do you think about these Nightingale murders? It's a It's a bitch, I know that.
Brass starting to freak out.
Press calling it the next Son of Sam.
He's the one targeting nurses? Yeah, for now.
But Jules is gonna be just fine.
She's smart.
How was the party? Aw, come on, you know how Jules does it.
Raimy was smiling from ear to ear.
It was a nice party, you know.
Look, man.
Word is, you've been swinging by the house.
I don't know the details, but Jules asked me to ask you to stop.
Yeah, no, I get it.
I get it.
I think Raimy's starting to ask questions that she just can't answer.
You've been under for two years, Frank.
Two years.
I wouldn't be the only one happy to see you back in the world.
I'm working on it.
You coming out? When? You can't tell me when.
I get it, but that's good, man.
Real good.
You stay safe, man.
All right.
- Jeter on with an infield hit.
- You got him, man! And Bernie Williams gets a hold of one in the right field! Bernie Williams gets a two run shot in the bottom of the eighth! This is WQ2YV calling an unidentified operator out of Queens, New York.
- Hey, it's me.
- Queens, hey.
How the hell did you call that homer? It happened 20 years ago in 1996.
Earth to Queens, it is 1996.
Game four, Yanks come back from 6-0, Wade Boggs pinch walks the winning run in the top of the tenth.
They run the table from there.
Are you screwing with me? Me? [chuckles.]
Frank from Queens.
Daughter who tries to talk to astronauts, and you're not trolling me? I'm so I'm not what-ing you? Frank what what is your last name? Sullivan.
Not that it's any of your business.
Okay, you know what, Queens? You're weirding me out right now.
Wait, wait, what what's your call sign? I told you my call sign, it's WQ2YV.
[dramatic music.]
What's your daughter's name? I [laughs.]
.
You know what? I'm out.
My name is Raimy Elizabeth Sullivan.
My father's name was Francis Joseph Sullivan.
I live at 810 Browning in Bayside, Queens, where I have lived my whole life, which is the same house where my father, Frank, after he left my mother, Julie Come on, who the hell is this? Right now.
Used to leave me birthday presents In a coffee can.
You burnt the box.
What? You burnt the box! Tell me you did not just burn the box.
Frank! Frank! I want you to listen to me right now.
If you come on this frequency again, if you contact me again, and so help me God, if you go near my family, I will hunt you down and I will kill you! - Do you copy that? - Frank! Dad? [Banners' "Start a Riot" playing.]
My name is Raimy Sullivan.
and I'm looking to talk to space shuttle "Discovery.
" [both chuckling.]
- Hey! - Hi! What is this? I will march down an empty street I want you to stick this flag where only I can see it.
It's gonna be our little super-secret communication system, okay? When are you coming back? Please don't go! Daddy! - Daddy, Daddy! - Come on, come on.
Okay, your body.
It's a female.
Most likely late 20s, early 30s.
Probably dumped in the marsh about 20, 25 years ago.
But that's not what sent the tingle up my leg.
You still get tingles up your leg, Marco? I do, yes.
But only if it's an attractive set of remains.
Got two sets of rosaries here.
One bound around the wrist, the other bound around the ankles.
A ritual killing? I worked a serial murderer who was active for a hot minute back in the '90s.
Called him the "Nightingale Killer".
Sure.
Targeted nurses.
He used rosaries? Well, it wasn't made public, but, yes.
All three victims the same.
Maybe there were four.
[dramatic music.]
- Hey, Ricky.
- So? Don't hold out on me, bro.
Is the deal going down or not? We're on, man.
Love it, man.
Come on.
What's up, Jay? This is the guy.
This hookup's good to go.
Holy crap, you got to Little Jay? Did he take the bait? He wants a case.
Tomorrow night.
12 keys? We can do that.
Yeah, okay.
We can do that.
[exhales.]
I got you! [sighs.]
I got to make some calls.
Hey, Stan.
You, um you believe in that "Twilight Zone" stuff? I don't know what that means, Frank.
Eh, you know, like, uh time travel, communicating with the future.
You think that stuff's possible? Bro, you take down Little Jay, that's the head of the snake.
We get to go home and I really want to go home, so please tell me you're squared away.
No, I'm good, man.
I'm good.
Raimy! Raimy.
[grunting.]
What're you doing? It's him, Daniel! Raimy, what're you talking about? What happened? The ham radio.
The other night a voice came on.
But the ham radio doesn't work It works.
It works for me.
I I don't have answers, I really don't.
But we talked a couple of times.
- He said his name was Frank.
- He said his name was Frank? No, there were other things, I trust me, neither one of us believed it at first, either.
He's smart.
He's leaving clues only I would know.
This is your father? Look at the date on the newspaper.
It's October 22.
- This says 1996.
- Yes! 20 years ago today.
Because time is moving parallel.
It's the same day, but he's in '96, and I'm now it proves he's the one on the ham.
- Daniel this is what I do - I know.
I know, which is why - It just sounds a little - Crazy? Thank you, yes.
I'm aware of that.
Raimy, Raimy, you're not crazy, okay? And, look, there definitely I mean, sure, yeah, there are theories, okay? - What theories? - I don't know.
I'm not a scientist, I'm an architect, I can't I'm a cop bear-hugging a coffee can, you're good.
Okay, uh okay.
Well, you're talking about communicating across time.
I mean, there's elements of quantum mechanics that that explain this a string theory.
There's Einstein "spooky action at a distance.
" They just proved that to be right.
Look, the point is Raim.
You're not the first person to believe this.
[sobs.]
[radio crackling.]
CQ? CQ? [radio static.]
CQ, this is WQ2YV.
[radio static.]
Yeah, um, uh I'm here.
Don't take this the wrong way or anything, but this might be the worst picture you've ever taken.
[laughs.]
Dad? Yeah, I'm I'm here.
It's me.
I don't know where to start with this.
When are you? 2016.
Whoa.
I know.
So you're 28.
- Your birthday was yesterday.
- I am.
You're older than me.
I am.
- And I'm a cop.
- No way! You're a cop? Get out of here.
So you're telling me that in 20 years, I'm gonna be on the job with my daughter? Hello? No.
No, what? I'm retired? You're dead.
You die tomorrow.
[engine revving.]
[tires squealing.]
October 23, 1996, game four of the Series.
You were killed at 9:12 p.
m.
Tomorrow night tomorrow night where? - United Shipyard.
- In Queens? - There was a chase.
- [gunshots.]
You were shot first outside of berth 34.
The kill shot at 9:12 was on the access road.
This doesn't make any sense, I mean, how can you possibly even know Forensics, Frank.
There was a crime scene, shell casings, a body.
They pulled you out of the East River, you and another guy.
- Who? - Ricky Corrado.
- Who does it? - You tell me.
Like I'm the one in the future? What the hell does that even mean? I'm not eight years old, Frank.
You don't have to pretend.
You crossed the line, it got you killed.
But I what whoa! Hold on a second.
Tell me how you really feel here.
I I'm dirty and now I'm dead? You know what? - Good luck tomorrow.
- Whoa, whoa, whoa! Hold on, who the hell do you think you are right now? You're seriously asking that? Maybe if you hadn't abandoned us, you'd know.
I'm not dirty.
And wherever you heard that, that's a lie, okay? Then what're you doing tomorrow night? The job.
The job and every cop - in the sting can vouch - I read the file, no one ever said - there was a sting that night.
- Oh, yeah, I wonder why, huh? Because we're undercover.
Because it's a secret.
Raimy I know what kind of father I've been, okay? And I know what I've lost.
I lost your mother and I lost you.
I know what I've lost, okay? I do, I and I know what I got to do to get it back.
Dad, please don't go.
Raimy, I know you mean well.
I do.
But you, I mean this this version of you, you're you're a long ways from here, kiddo.
I can't go walking up to my front door and knocking on it with nothing to show but a bunch of pain that I've caused.
I can't walk away from this.
I'm sorry.
ME's got a match on those remains.
It's a nurse who went missing back in '96.
Susie Cairone.
- Cairone? - What? My mom worked with her; I remember when she went missing.
We calling this a Nightingale kill? Not that there's anything we can do about it.
Can I ask you a question? Shoot.
You remember any talk back in the day about my dad arranging a sting the night he got killed? Naw, that's news to me.
I was thinking about running down some of the guys - from his old operation.
- Why? This was your idea.
Just looking for a little closure of my own.
And you want from me You want names.
First thing's first.
Frank, this is Chester, he's your hookup.
This is Rainman, he'll have eyes on you in the apartment.
Chester's gonna be holding the product here.
It's your basic auto car garage bushwack one entrance, one exit.
Frank brings Little Jay and pals, makes sure Little Jay trades the cash for Chester's fine product, and then you duck, 'cause we're coming in hot and nasty.
Questions so far? - I'm set.
- No.
Frank? I'm good.
Runners will go with a 3-2 pitch.
Jones scores, and it's 6 to nothing, Atlanta.
Chester Lee? Raimy Sullivan, detective, 21st.
You're a ways from the nest, aren't you? Oh, I'm not here officially.
My father was Frank Sullivan.
I was hoping you could help me better understand what happened the night he was killed.
You want drama? You have the bases loaded - [shushing.]
- 2 outs.
Top of the tenth inning, and a 3-2 count on Boggs.
What's it say in the write-up? Write-up doesn't say anything.
'Cause everything I had to say - it's in the write-up.
- He walked 'em! He walked 'em! That's what I'm talkin' about, right? The Yankees lead 7-6.
You left the force in 2002.
Yes, I did.
You'd racked up enough misconducts to be let go for cause, but they let you leave quiet.
Keep your pension.
Someone gave you the easy way out, and I'm just curious why.
Maybe it's 'cause I'm blessed.
I agree.
Attempted rape, perversion of a minor, all just swept away.
Tell me, how do your kids feel about Daddy's time on the job? Don't do this, Detective.
Because I had to read in every paper in New York what a bad guy my father was.
Starting the day after he was shot.
Yo, we picking up Little Jay here? Yup.
Look, I am just trying to find out the truth.
Was my father dirty? Not a clue.
Was there a sting arranged - the night he was killed? - No.
Well, why did somebody tell me there was a sting - that night if there wasn't? - I'm just not going there.
Who are you protecting? Stan Moraino? Deputy Chief Moraino.
I mean, he's the one who ran the operation, right? He's the one who protected you.
He provided you with this cush job for what? - For your silence? - Man, you do not want to be - messing with these people.
- Why would someone assume there was a sting if there wasn't? Maybe because that's what someone was told.
Told? You mean led to believe.
My father was told there was a sting.
I never said anything about your father.
There wasn't a sting.
Was there? Sullivan hey, hey, hey.
Ah! Come on, man! It was a setup.
Take it easy, all right? Somebody want to tell me what's going on here? I'll tell you what's up.
You're a cop.
Raimy, we're meeting my parents in an hour.
Go to the radio, tell my dad it's a setup.
[phone ringing.]
Don't trust Chester Lee, don't trust Stan Moraino, okay? [phone ringing.]
Can you do that? Can you tell him that, Daniel? Daniel? - [phone ringing.]
- Daniel! Rainman, talk to me.
He's at the shipyard.
All right.
Get your ass over here.
This is messed up, bro.
[tires screeching.]
Hey, Raim.
Raim? WQ2YV.
WQ2YV, come in! Dad, are you there? I'm a cop? If I'm a cop, what does that make you, huh? - Are you really that dumb? - Shut up! Okay, okay, look, if I was a cop, if I was, you think it's gonna end like this with you just shooting me right here? You don't think that Little Jay's gonna come at you? Huh? You don't think other cops are gonna come at you, Ricky? Other cops? Like the ones working for Little Jay? Or the ones that sold you out? Dad, come in! Dad, are you there? I let you into my house, man! My daughter's christening.
[groans.]
Trust me, man.
This this is good for you.
You were shot first outside berth 34.
This is the easy way out.
Run with me.
Come on, Ricky, it doesn't need to end like this.
- What? - Run with me.
[gunshot, screaming.]
[gunshots.]
[muffled gunshot.]
[engine revving.]
[tires screeching.]
[gunshots.]
[tires squealing.]
[gasps.]
[radio static.]
[panting.]
[applause.]
- There she is! - There she is.
[clapping.]
Can you believe my little girl's a cop? Huh? Hey, are you okay? Hey, whoa, whoa.
Raim, slow down.
Can you feel it? Everything's different.
My father wasn't murdered.
Okay, uh wait, what? You don't remember? I remember the accident.
Uh your dad died in a car accident five years ago.
Just after his 43rd birthday.
Tell me you remember that, kiddo.
I I remember.
I remember it both ways.
Life when he was murdered, and life life when he wasn't.
Everything's changed, Gordo.
[train clacking.]
[somber music.]
You're one lucky guy, Frank.
Needless to say, you're blown, pal.
And they're rolling up the whole operation.
What happened out there? It's hard to say.
Hey.
Hey.
Come here.
Give your dad a hug.
I love you.
You did good, kiddo.
[elevator dings.]
Can you hold the elevator, please? Oh, Cairone, where's the fire? Oh, I'm slammed.
I'm just orienting a new RN with her head up her Whatever.
[chuckles.]
And I heard about Frank.
Yeah.
He he's good.
You know, a little out of it, but, you know? He'll live, right? Yeah.
- Here, let me take those.
- Oh, no, no.
Yes, stop, we're going to three anyway, come on.
[shimmering tone.]
[tense music.]
Totally owe you codeine.
I'm joking.
[mouthing.]
Not joking.
Daddy was happy to see you.
Mm-hmm.
[shimmering tone.]
[shimmering tone.]
Nurse's station.
It's great, you know, we've got a good place.
And, um I am so, so sorry.
I'm late.
Hi, I'm Raimy.
I'm truly so excited to be meeting both of you.
[easy listening music.]
Um, can we talk this way? - Yeah.
- Yeah.
- Are you angry with me? - What? Because, you know, all that other stuff there's an explanation, it's - I'm sorry if I scared you - Um, miss, miss.
Um, I think there's been a misunderstanding.
Miss? Yeah, look, I think you may be mistaken.
Or confused.
You and I don't know each other.
Okay? Stop! Daniel.
Your name is Daniel Lawrence, we live together in Bayside, Queens.
- Say you know who I am.
- How do you know my name? I'm your girlfriend! My mother is Julie Sullivan.
She was your nurse when you got into a car accident two years ago she introduce us.
Your arm went through the window.
Tell me your arm went through the window - in a car crash a couple years ago! - Okay.
Okay.
I don't know your mother, okay? I've never been to Queens and I don't know you.
I'm sorry.
Daniel.
The person you've dialed is unavailable.
Please leave your message after the tone.
- [beeps.]
- Mom? Why is your voicemail all messed up? You have to call me right now.
I'm coming over.
[cell phone ringing.]
Detective Sullivan.
Did he say what it's about? No, fine, I Just give me 20 minutes.
Under water Go over this, okay? I'll All right, I'll talk to you later.
[sighs.]
Okay, look, uh there's no easy way to say this.
We've ID'd the remains from the marsh.
Susie Cairone.
The nurse missing from '96, we talked about this.
No, I needed to talk to you in person about this.
- We spoke this afternoon.
- Forensics came back an hour ago.
I'm sorry, Raimy, it's your mom.
[tense music.]
What? Look, I know it's cold comfort after 20 years.
But at least we found her.
Go home.
Okay? - How? - Go home.
You understand me? That's an order.
Nightingale can wait till tomorrow.
The Nightingale hasn't killed in 20 years.
[sighs.]
I'm gonna get you some water.
Well, have you looked there? No, I no, I know you're doing everything you can.
I just if you get any leads, if you hear anything, Satch, just call me, okay? That's all I'm asking you.
Daddy! Hey, I got to call you back.
Come here.
Come here, baby.
Hey Don't cry.
Don't cry, come here.
Come here, let me see you.
Hey, hey.
Don't don't cry.
Okay? We're gonna find her.
Just eleven weeks after undercover NYPD detective Frank Sullivan survived an assassination attempt, authorities are reporting that his ex-wife and nurse, Julie Sullivan, has disappeared.
Unofficially, sources in the NYPD are telling me that all signs point to the Nightingale Killer, though no final determination has been made.
Obviously, Kyle, as more details come to light, we will keep you and our viewers posted on all the latest.
WQ2YV, come in.
Frank! Frank, I need you to get on the ham.
I need you to get on the ham right now.
WQ2YV.
I'm trying to reach the space shuttle "Columbia.
" This is WQ2YV.
This is the same.
Who is this? My name is Raimy Sullivan.
Are you an astronaut? Hello? I'm I'm here.
No, I'm I'm a friend of your dad's.
I'm a friend of Frank's.
He's in the hospital.
I know.
Hey I need you to do something for me.
I need you to tell your dad that his friend on the radio needs him now.
I've gone on too long Can you tell him that? Who will save my soul After all the things that I've done wrong I don't belong I don't belong Save my soul Who will save my soul?
To introduce to you, the leader of the free world, the President of the United States of America, Mr.
William Jefferson Clinton! Today is gonna be the day That they're gonna throw it back to you And by now you should've somehow Realized what you got to do I don't believe that anybody The Yankees are down two games to none with game three of the World Series moving to Atlanta this evening.
In other news, a recent rash of homicides targeting New York City area nurses has been tagged "The Nightingale Murders.
" More on all of this la - Morning, Mrs.
Sullivan.
- Morning, Gordo.
Raimy, come on, Gordo's here! - Move it.
- Be right down! I don't believe that anybody Feels the way I do About you now And all the roads We have to walk are winding And all the lights That lead us there are blinding Peanut, it's time for school! Get a move on! There are many things that I Would Like to say to you But I don't know how 'Cause maybe - Hey, Gordo! - Hey, Raims.
Hey, where's your bag? - My pony.
- Oh.
The one that saves me And after all Okay, no bodega, no candy, all right? Gordo, her life is in your hands.
