Hobitit (1993) s01e01 Episode Script

Bilbo

The Hobbits Jounin Ensio & Spiny Norman Strider Gollum Directed by Part I Bilbo Is it possible that there is still a Hobbit, who doesn't know the tale of the ring? Very well.
I shall tell it.
One last time.
Well then As you well know, the elves forged a long time ago in Eregion, by the order of the dark lord Sauron, the Rings of Power.
The Magic Rings, as we call them.
They were many a kind, but Sauron forged one other ring, in secret, to control all the others, so that their power was chained to the One, and they were its servants.
When the elves heard of this, they took off their rings.
And so a great war started between Sauron and the elves.
The elves escaped from Sauron, and managed to save three rings.
But the rest fell into Sauron's hands, and he shared them amongst the peoples of Middle-Earth, with the intention of dominating all those with lust for power.
Many bad things among men and dwarves were caused by those rings and one by one they succumbed to Sauron's power.
But this tale is a long one.
If I told you the whole story, we'd still be sitting here as spring turns to winter.
Suffice to say that the high king Gil-Galad, and Elendil of the Numénors defeated Sauron and took the Ring from him.
The Ring passed to Isildur, the son of Elendil, who fell in battle.
And the Ring fell into the Great River.
And a very long time after that, but still a very long time ago, by the Great River, there lived a Hobbit-like people, to which belonged two friends, Sméagol and Déagol.
One day, they decided to go to the Gladden Fields by boat.
Sméagol went sniffing around the shore, while Déagol stayed in the boat to fish.
Suddenly a damn big fish snatched his hook, and pulled him underwater, to the very bottom.
There he let go of the fishline, because he saw something shiny in the bottom.
Holding his very breath he grabbed it, and swam to the shore.
What did you find? Give it to me, will you? Why? Because today is my birthday, and I want it.
None of my concern.
Besides, I've already given you a present.
The most expensive that I could afford.
I found this ring, and I will keep it.
Or so you think.
No-one ever found out the fate of Déagol.
Sméagol hid the body well.
He started to use the Ring, for his own nasty and treacherous purposes.
He developed very sensitive eyesight and hearing.
It's no wonder that he fell into disfavour, and eventually, his own people cursed him, and chased him away.
He became Gollum.
Precious! It's our precious.
We found it.
Precious PRECIOUS! The common history of Bilbo Baggins and the Ring started, on one April morning, in 1341 according to the Shire calendar.
Bilbo decided, to his own, permanent surprise, to leave with Gandalf the Grey and 13 dwarven kings, in search of a great treasure.
The great inheritance of the Kingdom under the Mountain.
The journey was succesful, and the dragon which guarded the treasure was slain, but during the trip, there was an incident.
High in the Misty Mountains, the group was attacked by orcs.
And so Bilbo got separated from the group, down in the orc caves beneath the Mountains, and in the midst of battle, he hit his head, and lost consciousness.
When he opened his eyes at last, he didn't know if they were really open, because the darkness was just as black as with eyes closed.
You can only imagine how damn frightened he was.
He didn't see anything, he didn't hear anything, and could only feel the cold, rocky surface.
He stood up a little, crawled around, groping his way until he found the wall of the corridor.
That way, he crawled his way forward a little while, until suddenly his hand touched something small and cold.
It was a small metal ring.
And this moment was the turning point of his life even though he didn't know it at the time.
He put the ring into his pocket without a second thought.
He couldn't find any use for it, then.
After that he sat down on a cold rock and fell into deep despair for a long period of time.
He searched his pockets.
His hand touched a small sword.
He drew it, and it started to shine with a pale light before his eyes.
Because it was an Elvish sword, Sting.
Forged in Gondolin for all those orc wars, which so many songs tell about.
He started to feel a little better so he moved on.
Well well, what did we find precious? Precious! A delicious fine snack, at last.
Who are you? What's it then? I am Bilbo Baggins, sir.
"Sir.
" I got separated from the dwarves and Gandalf, I don't know where I am, and I don't care as long as I can get out! What does it have in it's hand? - A sword.
Forged in Gondolin.
Maybe we sit down, and discuss a bit.
Would it like some riddles, would it like, precious so would it like, or what would it like? Sure, why not.
You ask first.
What has roots nobody sees, is taller then trees, up, up it goes, and yet never grows? Easy.
It's a mountain.
It guesses quite deftly, right precious.
Very deftly indeed.
Mister is a very fine opponent if it takes the challenge, or does it take? You see, we ask first, right precious.
And when it doesn't know, we eat it.
And if it asks, and we don't know, then we give it anything it wants.
We could, like show the way out.
It's a deal.
Thirty white horses on a red hill, first they champ, then they stamp, then they stand still.
Easy, easy, easy, easy, EASY! Child's play.
Teeth! Teeth, of course! Voiceless it cries, wingless flutters, toothless bites, mouthless mutters.
Well, it, it's, it's easy, it's "Easy.
" Wind! Wind, of course! An eye in a blue face, saw an eye in a green face.
"That eye is like this eye,", said the first eye, "but in a low place, not in a high place.
" It's of course the SUN! And a daisy! But what about this: It cannot be seen, cannot be felt, cannot be heard, cannot be smelt, it lies behind stars and under hills, and empty holes it fills, it comes first and follows after, ends life, kills laughter.
The dark.
A box without hinges, key or lid, yet inside golden treasure is hid.
Treasure? - Treasure.
Something precious? PRECIOUS? - Yes yes.
Well? What is it? The right answer is not a kettle boiling over, as that sound implies.
Give it a little time Precious, precious, precious I mean: Eggs.
But how's this: This thing all things devours: Birds, beasts, trees, flowers.
Gnaws iron, bites steel, grinds hard stones to meal.
Slays king, ruins town, and beats high mountain down.
Smaug the dragon? Orc hordes? If it doesn't know, we eat it, we eat it, precious.
Man? - Not a man, no! Give me a little time time That's it, it's time! Now it asks one question, the very last question, the ultimate question! What do I have in my pocket? What? What's in my pocket? "What do I have in my pocket?" But that is not FAIR! We're not interested in what it has in its filthy pocketses! What do I have in my pocket? All right.
It gives us three guesses then.
Very well.
The first one? Hands.
- Wrong.
Knife.
- Wrong.
Third and last? Well? Come on, I'm waiting.
Time is running out.
Some piece of string, or nothing at all! Both wrong.
You lose.
Well? What about the promise? I want to get out.
You have to show me the way out.
Oh dear.
Have we promised Baggins that sort of thing? Maybe we have, maybe we haven't, because we cannot quite remember.
But we are really thinking, what it might have in its pockets, yes, that's what we're thinking.
Never mind that, a promise is a promise.
So full of hate, so impatient.
Listen now, "my friend", you can't simply walk to the exit, we first need to get something "handy", so that it will be "safe", to walk in that corridor, right? Okay, but hurry up.
Yes, yes! In hurry we are! Now we need our precious, precious! Where is it? Where IS it? It's gone! What's the matter? - Precious! Precious! What have you lost? It mustn't ask.
It's none of its business.
We don't know where it is Neither do I know where I am.
Come out of there! Guide me out.
I won.
You promised.
You didn't know the last question.
The last question What does it have in its filthy pocketses? We want to know what it HAS in its pockets! First it must tell what it has in its pockets! The answers are guessed, not given.
Besides, I asked first what you lost.
What does it have in its pockets? Well, let't see PRECIOUS!! Precious! PRECIOUS! Filthy Baggins! Gone! It found our precious! It stole it! It won't get away.
We will find it.
Baggins! Miserable, filthy Baggins! PRECIOUS! And that is how the One Ring found its way here.
It very radically changed our peaceful way of life.
But note, that even though Bilbo was tempted to kill Gollum then pity held his hand back.
Even though he kept the Ring, on which his hopes were based, he did not use it to kill that vulnerable, miserable creature.
Well That's that.
But you didn't say a word about Frodo.
- Yeah.
His time will come soon enough.
