La Palma (2024) s01e01 Episode Script
Cry Wolf
1
[adventurous orchestral music playing]
[music building]
[music fades]
[pop music playing over speakers]
La Palma is the westernmost
of the Canary Islands
and also the most beautiful
- This one's nice.
- [captain] That's why people call it
- You like it?
- I don't like that one. Take another.
Uh
Uh, no, hang on. Did I lose an earring?
- [woman] Yeah. That one's gone.
- I did? [sighs] Where is it?
[captain continues indistinctly]
[giggles]
[laughing] Please. Can you stop?
[chuckles] You know a little flirting
is fine if you get a free tour.
Sure, but you know he's
gonna wanna sleep with you, right?
He's gonna think
you wanna run away and get married.
- He won't think I wanna get married
- Dream of moving south
Having ten kids.
Yeah, I could do that.
Sure, I'll just have ten of the captain's
kids and move south. [chuckles]
- First one in!
- I've gotta find the earring first.
[woman] Whoo!
What?
[foreboding music playing]
[woman] Ida?
[passengers murmuring]
[woman] Ida?
Ida!
- [passengers talking at once]
- [woman] Ida!
[foreboding music continues]
Ida!
- [captain] We have to leave right now.
- [passengers shouting]
Stop. Stop! She's under the boat.
Just stop the boat.
[all screaming]
[tense music playing]
[female presenter] Ever since 1949,
the peaceful and quiet island of La Palma
has been a ticking time bomb.
[male presenter] During the eruption
in 1949,
there'd been a series
of very strong earthquakes,
and a fault zone had developed
along the crest of the volcano.
[female presenter] We're talking about
the entire flank of the mountain
moving together as one piece
down towards the ocean.
[male presenter] It seems to already be
close to failure.
The crucial question
is not a matter of if,
but of when.
[music fades]
["Feliz Navidad"
by José Feliciano playing]
[singing in Spanish]
[horn honks]
Ah. [sighs] Feel it?
Wow.
- Perfect.
- [woman] Thank you. Merry Christmas.
[driver] Merry Christmas.
When are we going swimming?
Oh, really soon.
We have to get a room first.
Come. Come, come, come.
["Feliz Navidad" continues playing]
Same plastic Christmas tree.
Is it? Hey, look at that.
Exactly the same. That makes me happy.
[song fades]
- [man 1] Yes! [laughs]
- Hey!
- Ah, there you are. It's great to see you.
- [man 2 laughs]
- [man 1] Merry Christmas.
- Merry Christmas.
Okay, who is this?
Last year, you were this tall, and now
you're a grown woman all of a sudden.
- [girl sighs]
- [man 1 laughs]
And what happened to you?
I've just been working out a little.
[man 1] It looks like Fredrik got himself
a new woman.
[all chuckling]
Okay. Well then, I guess I'll see you
out and about, so, um
- [Fredrik] Yeah.
- Have a great time.
- Yeah, talk later. Enjoy.
- [man 1] Yeah. Bye.
- Hi.
- [woman] Hello.
- Welcome to our hotel.
- [Fredrik] Thank you very much.
Actually, we've come here every Christmas
for seven years now.
[speaking Norwegian]
Close enough.
So did you The rental car,
it should have been at the airport.
- A rental car?
- Yeah, José always fixed that.
Yes, I can fix a rental car for you
if you want.
[Fredrik] You can? Super.
We have a new José.
- [woman] Yeah.
- [Fredrik] Yeah.
- Enjoy your holiday.
- [Fredrik] Thank you.
Well, if sleeping with your kids
in the same room is called a holiday
- More like a boot camp, actually.
- [woman laughs] Yes.
Uh, one minute. We had a situation here,
and I think I might be able to fix you
another apartment.
- An apartment?
- [man] Yeah.
A special apartment
for a special lady.
It's at the end of this corridor here.
Top floor.
All right.
Oh! [chuckles]
- Whoa!
- It's different than before?
Oh, it's not, Tobias.
Just have a look with me. Hurry. Come on.
- Let's take a little tour, okay?
- [Tobias] What?
[gasps] Oh, hey, look. There's a desk
where you can draw. Sound good?
"A special room"
- "For a special lady."
- [girl chuckles]
- [woman] He was just being polite.
- [Fredrik] Sure.
- Oh my, my.
- [woman] Oh wow!
[girl] Shit.
You know, I can give him back
the room key if you really want to
- No! No way.
- [woman laughs]
[Fredrik] Bikini?
Yeah, is it a bit much?
No, it's perfect.
It's been a while
since I've seen you wear it.
[draws breath sharply] Yeah.
- [Fredrik] It's great.
- Special bikini for a special lady.
[Fredrik] For a very special lady.
[chuckles]
[woman] Ice grippers?
- That's what Dad brought on this trip?
- You like? [laughs]
- They were in the back here.
- [woman sighs]
And cold cream.
[laughs] Oh boy!
- Thank God I control Tobias's pills.
- [Fredrik] It's for the best. Oh yes.
Somebody left this on the floor.
Let's see.
- Oh yeah.
- [woman] Okay.
Should we try to get in the pool
in less than three minutes?
- Can we do it?
- [Fredrik] Sure.
[woman] Okay. [chuckles]
If you can do it in three minutes,
Dad will buy you a
[mysterious music playing]
LA PALMA
GEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE
- Hi.
- [man] Buenos días.
- Morning.
- [receptionist] Hola.
[man 1] There were also
a swarm of tremors yesterday
[woman] Hello.
They went from the inside of the mountain
all the way to the west coast.
[man 2] Hey there, girl.
There has been a lot of activity there
for a while, right?
- Haukur, can you take a look at it?
- Sure.
[typing on keyboard]
[computer beeps]
- [taps keyboard]
- [beeps]
- Hello.
- [man inhales deeply]
[sighs]
LA PALMA DAILY
[unsettling music playing]
[man] Where were the earthquakes
you were talking about today?
On the southeast coast of La Palma.
At Bonita Beach.
Why?
TRAGIC ACCIDENT ON TOURIST BOA
Is there a problem, or
Álvaro.
Is there a problem?
No, no.
[unsettling music continues]
- Uh, Haukur?
- [Haukur] Yeah?
That measuring equipment
you helped me set up,
it was new, right?
Yeah, sure. State of the art.
Are you sure?
What is the problem?
Mm. It just
It appears that I might've lost
the connection,
and the last signal is from yesterday.
- That's weird.
- [woman] Yeah?
- Look. Nothing happens.
- [computer beeping]
Well, it's not the equipment.
That's perfect because I looked it over.
[woman] Of course.
Yeah, it's probably
you that
- [laughs] Me?
- Yeah.
Yes.
- [Haukur] You're being a rookie.
- Right.
- [Haukur] Again.
- Yeah. So should we go and check it?
[dramatic music playing]
[music fades]
[man] Let's take a picture.
- [woman] 'Cano-campers.
- [Haukur laughs] Yeah.
Are you ready for tonight? Darts and beer?
- Tonight?
- Tonight, yeah.
Uh, last week, I came in last,
so I really guess I got nothing to lose.
[Haukur] You have talent. I can tell.
[woman sighs] Talent?
Anyway, I have to go home to my brother.
He needs me more than you do.
Come on.
- [Haukur] I thought he was doing better?
- [woman] He can still get pretty manic.
Always a new project.
[Haukur] So what is it
you're researching in the caves?
[woman] Well [clears throat]
I wanted to test whether changes
in the level of groundwater could indicate
changes in the physics of the mountain.
[Haukur] Okay, um, like the water making
the mountain unstable?
[woman] Yeah.
The transmitter is still here, but
What do you think?
- It looks fine.
- [woman] Yeah?
[sighs] Yeah.
You sure?
[Haukur] Well, I'll check it,
but it looks fine.
How far in is your equipment?
Uh, it's a couple hundred meters. [sighs]
Yeah.
- This is all fine.
- [woman] Yeah?
Yeah, it looks good.
- [woman] Okay.
- Let's get in there.
- [woman] Be careful though.
- Yeah.
[Haukur grunts]
- [Haukur sighs]
- [woman] Come on!
You know I don't like tight places,
and this fucking helmet is too small,
and you keep telling me
to speak fucking Danish.
[speaks Danish]
[Haukur speaks Danish]
[tense music playing]
[Haukur] What's wrong?
There was no running water
last time I was here.
I'll get a test.
Do you wanna hold it?
Thanks.
[tense music building]
[Haukur] Fuck.
Oh shit.
We need to check the air quality in here.
Can you help me up?
[woman] What?
[beep]
[Haukur] There's an unusually high
concentration of carbon dioxide.
It's not gonna be dangerous to us, but
it must have been higher recently,
otherwise the bats would have survived.
Walk slowly.
[Haukur breathing heavily]
[woman] No, no, no, no, no. [sighs]
Fuck's sake!
Seriously? I'm starting my doctorate
by destroying expensive equipment.
That's great work, Marie!
[Haukur] Oh shit.
[rattling]
- Marie?
- [Marie] What?
[Haukur] That is a seriously big crack.
[tense music building]
[woman] Oh!
[girl] It was a tourist boat
that sank yesterday.
- [Fredrik] Huh?
- [girl] Two Norwegians died.
- Look.
- [mother] Oh no!
Maybe we can talk more about that later
once Tobias has gone to sleep.
You know, Dad and I have talked about
exploring more of the island this year.
We'd talked about taking
that hike on the mountain.
- When do you guys wanna do that?
- Doesn't have to be first.
Can we
get more settled in
[mother] Yeah, but now you're talking
like you always do. We had a deal.
Yeah. See, here comes the food.
- Perfect. Thanks.
- Ah!
[Fredrik] Ay, ay, ay.
Look at that, Tobias. Looks delicious.
- [mother] Wow, that looks nice!
- [Fredrik] Oh yeah.
Is Spanish beer better,
or does it just taste better
'cause we're in Spain, hmm?
- [mother] Tobias?
- It's not the same as the picture.
No, all right. You know,
we've dealt with this before. Let's see.
[mother] We'll fix it.
- [Fredrik] There. We have
- [mother] That's right.
[Fredrik] We'll put this over here
just like that,
and then we'll need a tomato there,
and we'll need to turn it around.
They're not supposed to touch.
- Like that. Yeah.
- No, that won't do.
[Fredrik] Better?
That's super.
The first signs that the volcano has
started to come alive
are earthquakes and gas.
Gas that's toxic.
In some ways,
it's as if the volcano is telling us,
"I am awake now." [chuckles]
And after that, there is ash.
Lots of ash.
The ash is almost like, um,
black snow everywhere.
And sometimes, but not always,
there is lava.
So repeat after me.
- Gas.
- [children] Gas.
Ash.
[children] Ash.
- Lava.
- [children] And lava.
Stay there, okay? I'll be right back.
[Marie] This entire crack,
it was not there a week ago.
[Haukur] You can see the dead bats.
I measured high concentration
of carbon and sulfur dioxide in the air,
so something must have happened recently.
[Marie] Your rainy seasons have become
longer and more powerful.
And because of climate change,
the temperatures are rising.
So does the cloud layers, which means
it rains more in the mountains.
All of this water, it's removing
the friction between the stone layers.
- So this crack
- Mountains move all the time.
And that gas
you are talking about, Haukur,
you of all people should know
that there are small pockets of gas
in all volcanic areas.
We're talking about
an entirely new gap inside the cave.
Who knows what it could lead to?
Earthquakes? Avalanches
[Álvaro] Okay, that's enough!
You talk about climate change,
cracks, and mountains moving?
And all this after being here for a month?
Do you want to finish your doctorate
and succeed as a hydrologist?
[Marie] Yes, of course.
[Álvaro] Then stop adapting
reality into theory.
It's the other way around.
And be prepared to spend years on it,
even the rest of your life.
Do some more homework,
and then we can talk about it.
[sighs]
Come on. Let me show you something.
[Álvaro] Antonio.
- [on phone] Yes?
- Hello. This is Álvaro Pérez.
Álvaro. Haven't heard from you
in a long time.
I'm sorry. I'll get right to it.
Have you done the autopsy on those people
who died in the accident yesterday,
on the boat?
We just received the last body
half an hour ago.
We'll start the autopsies today.
Why do you ask?
Um
I wanted to ask
if you could call me once you're finished.
I'm curious about something to do with it.
Okay. I'll call you.
As you know,
there was an eruption here in 1949.
[Marie] Mm-hmm.
And that created a crack
several kilometers long,
so big you can walk in it.
Okay.
And?
Well And 20 years ago,
these British scientists
theorized that a new eruption could cause
the entire mountainside
to slide off into the sea.
We're talking
500 cubic kilometers of rock.
It's the equivalent of, uh
of Manhattan.
If that crashes into the sea, then
Then you get a tsunami.
Yeah.
[foreboding music playing]
And that tsunami is not
a terribly popular topic around here.
But, Haukur, there is way more groundwater
in that mountain now than it was then,
which means that
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba.
You don't have any evidence of that.
- People still have a right to know.
- [Haukur] Know?
Know what?
Know that something might happen?
Take a seat, please.
Look.
- [sighs] People have a right to know.
- [Marie] Thank you.
That's what Álvaro thought
during the eruption in 2021.
- Really?
- [Haukur] Yeah. He, uh
he went public.
He said there was a real danger
that the mountain could slide.
It caused mayhem.
Almost lost his job.
So he's not gonna do that again
until there's a a tsunami
literally on his doorstep.
But I mean, he was wrong then?
Wrong? [chuckles]
Wrong? Right? I mean, who knows? Uh
For it to happen,
so many factors must occur simultaneously.
I mean,
it would have to be the perfect storm.
And that theory might be wrong.
[Marie] Haukur?
[Haukur] Yeah?
How big would it be?
[Haukur] How big would what be?
The tsunami.
[blows lips]
YouTube it. [chuckles]
[male presenter] In 1949, a crack had
developed alongside the volcano.
[female presenter] That geological rift
is the main reason why this volcano could
one day set off a massive tsunami.
[male presenter] Within 20 or 30 minutes,
all of the wave could
spread out from La Palma
and start a long journey
across the Atlantic Ocean
with catastrophic consequences.
[unsettling music playing]
[gasps softly]
[unsettling music building]
[music fades]
[clears throat]
- Hi!
- [man] Hey!
What are you up to?
Uh, are are you actually cooking?
Yeah.
- Wow!
- Are you all right?
[Marie] Yeah, just a lot of work.
I've been saying that all along.
All you do is work.
- That isn't true.
- And look at this.
- It's like you only eat instant noodles.
- That also isn't true.
- Sure it is.
- No!
[man] Your diet is gonna give you scurvy.
I'm mostly just impressed
that my brother knows how a kitchen works,
'cause I actually didn't think you did.
[man] Yeah, that's a gold star for me
when I go back to the psychologist.
Oh! But hey, hey, hey.
There's something you need to see.
- Come look.
- [Marie] Hmm?
- [man] I found my next diving project.
- Yeah.
- You can actually make your bed.
- Yeah, yeah. But just look at this.
See? Here's a turtle forum
talking about La Palma.
There's something happening here now
that's special.
It seems like they're gathering,
and so somebody shared pictures.
- And there were hundreds of comments.
- What are they saying?
Well, people are really fascinated by them
being here all together
and traveling in the same direction.
That's unusual, apparently.
But Anyway, I have to go.
I thought I might pick up some vegetables,
if you wanted to have a
proper dinner?
- [Marie] Yes.
- [clicks fingers] Nice!
Do you think
I could borrow some money from you?
Yeah, of course.
How much do you need?
[man] Well, maybe a hundred?
If that's okay?
A hundred euros to buy vegetables?
Yeah, well, I do owe a little
to the boat guy for a couple of rides,
but I'll get a job
as soon as I go back to Norway,
and then I promise you I'll pay you back.
[Marie] Mm. Well, I guess that's fine,
even though you're spending all my money.
Thanks. See you later.
[sighs deeply]
- [Álvaro] Burns?
- [man] Gas.
- Gas?
- Extremely hot gas.
We found lethal levels of carbon dioxide
and sulfur dioxide in the lungs.
It had to have heated the water so much
that the glass bottom
of the tour boat cracked.
Thank you.
I owe you.
Álvaro.
What did we learn as kids?
Gas and ash Lava.
Should I be worried about this?
No. Everything's fine.
[solemn music playing]
[music fades]
- [mother] Hi.
- Hi. Got you a chair.
Actually, I'm just about to go for a jog
but thought you might like a walk first?
Right. Uh, I just ordered Thank you.
some snacks, so, uh
Hang on a sec.
- I'll come with.
- [mother] That's great.
I'll, uh, just It won't take long.
Mm! Thanks. Thanks.
Oh wow. That's not a glass of beer.
That's a vase.
Should I go on that walk alone,
do you think?
That's a good idea.
But I'll come tomorrow.
Hey, send some pictures!
[mother] I left my phone in the room.
[exhales deeply]
- [girl 1] What's with your brother?
- [girl 2] Oh!
- [girl 1] I wasn't trying to scare you
- It's all right.
[girl 1] What were you doing
with his food and stuff?
Oh, no, uh, he he won't eat food
whenever the picture
isn't exactly what's on his plate.
[laughs] Really?
Yeah, he's, uh, on the spectrum,
so he's got a lot of things like that.
[sighs] Oh well.
I guess we all are, right?
So, for example, I I have to go left
if the option is there.
Like, if there are
two elevators, for example,
then I'll wait for the left one,
even if the right is free.
[chuckles] Right.
It's really annoying,
but but I can't get admitted for it.
- Not yet.
- [chuckles]
But, hey, a few of us are
going to play some volleyball.
But we're only five,
so we're short one. You in?
Uh
Uh [sighs]
That that that'd be very cool,
but I I've I've gotta look after
my little brother.
Oh. Well, come if you change your mind.
- [girl 2] Yeah.
- Also, I get to play left side.
- [both chuckle]
- [girl 2] Okay.
- [sighs]
- [hopeful music playing]
[music stops]
What was that?
What?
- [Fredrik] What was that?
- Oh, that.
No, they were just a player short
for volleyball.
Why don't you do it?
I've gotta look after Tobias.
[laughs] Stop messing around.
I can watch him from here.
- Come on.
- Yeah?
Hey, you're 17 and always with us.
- [girl] Yeah.
- [Fredrik] Go play. Have some fun.
Yeah, okay.
- Okay?
- Okay.
[both sigh]
[Fredrik] Volleyball is
three touches, right?
- Three touches?
- [Fredrik] Tops.
- With the ball?
- [Fredrik] Finger taps, and this one.
Okay.
- [Tobias] Where are you going?
- [Fredrik] Sara has plans on her own.
But
you know what that means.
Ready?
Don't look.
First one to find it.
[unsettling music playing]
[girl shouts] Yeah!
- [mother] Thank you.
- [man] No worries.
Tobias?
Tobias?
Tobias!
[girl] Hey!
You playing?
Cool. Come.
- Come on.
- [Fredrik] Tobias?
- Have you seen Tobias?
- No.
- He must have come here. Help me look.
- What?
Tobias!
[tense music playing]
Tobias?
[Fredrik] Tobias!
Tobias!
[man] What's wrong?
Have you seen Tobias? He's gone.
What do you mean?
Tobias!
[man] Tobias!
[Sara] Tobias!
[man] No.
[Fredrik] Uh [sighs]
[Sara] But but what if he went
in the water?
The currents could be strong, and
He's still around here, okay?
- [Sara] Tobias!
- [Fredrik] Tobias!
[tense music continues]
Tobias!
Is that him over there?
Up on the rocks?
- [Sara] Tobias!
- [Fredrik] Tobias!
Tobias!
Tobias, my boy.
Oh! God, you can't leave
like that, all right?
Hey.
Was it because I left?
No, no, no, no, no.
No, everything's fine.
No.
Where are they going?
[gentle music playing]
[music stops]
[panting]
- [pop music playing over speakers]
- [cheering]
- Yeah! Whoo!
- Whoo!
Okay, no pressure. Just do it again.
[music continues in background]
[people cheering in background]
[Haukur] Marie?
- We're starting the next round.
- Haukur, come here a minute.
- [Haukur] What?
- Just sit down.
So what is this incredibly boring stuff
you want me to look at?
Well, I analyzed
the water samples from the cave today.
[Haukur] Mm-hmm.
[Marie] Rainwater should take 30 years
to get from the top of that mountain
down into those tunnels.
And as it flows through the rocks,
it gets loaded with minerals.
The samples from today
shows no minerals at all.
[Haukur] Hmm.
And because it's deficient in minerals,
that means it's taken a lot less time
to travel through the mountain.
Yeah, weeks.
Maybe
maybe even days.
Which
could imply that the crack we saw today
goes all the way up through the mountain.
- Can I?
- [Marie] Please.
[Marie sighs]
[exhales quietly]
What?
You see, the place we were today
in the caves,
that is directly beneath the crack
from 1949.
So
so what if I'm right?
Well, if you're right,
it's not a theory anymore, is it?
And we we will drown, you and I.
And those people out there. And
Just, um Okay.
Let's just let's just go up
to the mountain now
and check if anything's
even happened to the crack.
Just
just to make sure that we are
that we are we're completely wrong.
[dramatic music playing]
- [Haukur] Would you grab the case?
- [Marie] Yeah.
- Okay. Where to?
- [Haukur] I'll take that.
We're going up here.
[mysterious music playing]
- [boy] Ready to serve? Come on!
- [girl] Yes.
- Oh!
- [boy] Oh! Yeah!
- Wow! Fantastic!
- [girl laughs]
- Whoa!
- [boy] You got it. Come on!
[reflective music playing]
- Hey!
- [mother] Mm-hmm!
Hi. [sighs]
- I ran up to that other beach.
- Okay.
It was gorgeous.
It was surrounded by
those tiny, designer boutique-y hotels.
Seriously, it was just
a totally different vibe.
- That's fantastic.
- [sighs contentedly] Yeah.
I, uh, opened the wine. Do you want some?
Sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Yes, perfect.
- Why not? Sure.
We have to celebrate that we're here.
And we made the flight this year too.
[chuckles]
Yeah, so [sighs]
You know, you've really been crushing it.
Working out almost every day.
Going to sleep at ten for six months.
Impressive.
Mm-hmm.
Cheers.
Cheers.
And now that we have a room alone
[both chuckle]
How was your afternoon?
Let me see. Our afternoon. Uh
- It was really good. Wonderful.
- Hmm. That's good.
Yeah, yeah. Give the boy a pool,
and he's totally happy.
[laughs]
- Did you see what he was drawing?
- Yeah.
- That star chart.
- Yeah.
I saw him drawing some turtles as well.
Just imagine the universe he has
in his head.
It's incredible.
Wonderful.
[knocking on door]
- Did you order any
- No, I didn't.
- No, I can get it.
- No, no, no. Please, just relax.
[door opens]
- [man] How are you? You good?
- [mother] Yeah. Yeah.
- [man] You left this downstairs.
- [mother laughing]
I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to. I didn't
- [man] Oh, and that place
- [mom] Okay. Where is it?
- Where are we now?
- [man] In this area.
- See? Right here.
- That's nice.
- [man] And
- [Fredrik] Hi there.
- [man clears throat] Hi.
- So did you fix the car?
Um, that's why I'm here.
I've just called all the offices,
but they are fully booked all week.
You called now?
- [man clears throat]
- But I said this morning we needed a car.
- Yes, but
- We have plans tomorrow with the kids
- Just listen
- No, you listen to me, you sneaky little
- Fredrik, it's not a big deal.
- No, but he's in the wrong.
- I'll complain about this.
- [mother] Fredrik!
- This is such bad service.
- I called my brother.
He sells cars, and he will lend you a BMW
for the same price.
Good horsepower and everything. Okay?
Yeah, of course. That's, uh
Yeah, that's great. That's, uh Thank you.
You can pick up the keys tomorrow morning.
- Sorry for interrupting you.
- [Fredrik] No, no.
That's, uh
[inhales deeply, sighs]
It's really good.
That's, um
He upgraded us
to a very nice apartment and a BMW,
and you're complaining like that?
- [Fredrik] Yeah.
- [mother] What's your problem?
[Fredrik] No, sorry,
but that guy needs to calm down a bit.
[mother] He needs to calm down?
He's helping us.
He was hitting on you. You could see him.
I saw you earlier.
[mother sighs]
I'm going to Tobias's room.
- [mysterious music playing]
- [Haukur breathing heavily]
[Marie] Are you okay?
[Haukur, sighing] Yeah.
I'm getting too old for this shit.
[Marie] No.
[Haukur] Okay.
Here we go.
[Haukur grunting]
What the fuck?
[dramatic music playing]
[Haukur] You were right.
It's opened all the way through.
We need to measure this.
[music fades]
They're sleeping,
both of them.
- Maybe for the best.
- [Fredrik] Right.
[Sara sighs]
[Fredrik inhales and exhales deeply]
You and Mom Is something going on?
No. Hey, that's nothing.
It's fine.
You're not like you used to be.
What do you mean?
Well, uh,
before, when we used to stay here
you would just sit outside on the balcony
and be talking for hours into the night.
[chuckles softly]
It was nice to fall asleep to that.
In a way.
Yeah.
[sighs deeply]
No, but it's nothing to
There's not much to
I don't know, Sara,
how much you and I should talk about this.
Come on, Dad.
I can deal with it.
You know I can deal with it.
I just wanna know what's happening.
[sighs]
Yeah.
What's happening. [chuckles]
I
I don't know. It's, uh
You know, when I met your mother,
she was, uh, in a really tough place,
right, after your father ran off,
and really upset, very down. A bit lost.
And she probably needed, um,
a man like me.
Teacher. Nice and safe.
Loves soccer and good food.
Steady-going.
[chuckles]
But, yeah, I was a bit of a scatterbrain,
so she saved me, too, absolutely.
[chuckles]
But the truth is that
sometimes things change.
So right now, I I
[chuckles]
Right now, I don't know for sure.
Does that worry you?
Yes. [clears throat]
A little, I guess.
Like, you You're my dad, you know?
Really.
[Fredrik] Okay, okay.
And you?
- Hmm?
- [Fredrik] Are you okay?
Yeah. Why wouldn't I be?
No, I don't know.
You came with us on holiday.
You're nearly home every weekend.
Shouldn't you be out there having fun?
- Maybe find a sweetheart?
- [both laugh]
[sighs] And what do
- And what do you know about that, huh?
- [Fredrik] No! What do I know?
Well,
don't drink too much of that.
You know Mom wants you to go running
and drink grape juice.
[laughs] Yeah, that's
Have you tasted grape juice?
- No.
- [Fredrik] No, exactly. [laughs]
I'm good. I'm good.
[Sara, sighing] Okay.
[rumbling]
- [man] Anna, you coming?
- Yes. I'm getting my things.
- [man] Blue Monkey Bar?
- Oh no. Please, guys.
The Blue Monkey? No. It's awful. [laughs]
[tense music playing]
[chuckles]
[beeping]
[Anna] What the fuck is this?
Look.
Is all this from a few minutes ago?
[beeping continues]
[Haukur] Just make sure
they're properly facing each other.
[Marie] Is this okay?
- Yeah, looks good.
- [Marie] Okay.
And when you're ready,
you can flip the switch.
[Marie] All right.
[Álvaro] The people on the boat
were killed by gas.
We have an impending
level five earthquake.
What?
And high levels of gas rising
in the mountain.
- How deep is it?
- One kilometer or so.
It's building up quickly.
We're getting a gas emission, Álvaro.
Got to call the Civil Guard.
There might be people up there.
- We're getting some information.
- Yeah?
See those numbers there?
[Marie] But So
It's moving.
[Haukur] Yeah. Not by much,
but it's slipping out.
- Shit, okay. I'll call Álvaro.
- Hmm.
[Marie clears throat]
[line ringing]
- It will start any moment now.
- [phone ringing]
[Álvaro] It's Marie.
- Marie?
- Álvaro, hi.
I am with Haukur in the mountains, and
What?
the crack from 1949 is expanding.
We have the measurements
and everything right here.
Listen. You have to leave your equipment
and get down from there now.
A gas emission is imminent.
Do you hear me?
A gas emission is imminent.
[beeping continues]
[rumbling]
[Marie] Run!
Haukur! Run! Come on!
[Haukur grunts]
[both panting]
[dramatic music playing]
- [Marie] Haukur!
- [Haukur groans]
- Shit!
- [Marie] Come on!
[dramatic music building]
[both panting]
- Hey!
- [Haukur] Run!
- [Marie] It's the volcano-campers!
- [Haukur] Come on! Come on!
Marie! No, no, no!
Marie, we c
[Marie] Hey!
You have to [coughing]
You have to get out of here!
[woman] What?
The gas is poisonous. Come on!
- [coughing]
- [Marie] No, just leave it!
- Leave it!
- Come on! We gotta go!
[all coughing]
[Marie] Do you have water?
Give me your water. Give me this.
- [Haukur] Marie! Run!
- [Marie] Put water on it.
[all coughing]
[Marie] It's gonna be okay.
And just run, okay?
Run!
[dramatic music continues]
[groans, coughing]
[gasping]
[panting]
[grunts]
[beeping]
[mysterious orchestral music playing]
[music fades]
[adventurous orchestral music playing]
[music building]
[music fades]
[pop music playing over speakers]
La Palma is the westernmost
of the Canary Islands
and also the most beautiful
- This one's nice.
- [captain] That's why people call it
- You like it?
- I don't like that one. Take another.
Uh
Uh, no, hang on. Did I lose an earring?
- [woman] Yeah. That one's gone.
- I did? [sighs] Where is it?
[captain continues indistinctly]
[giggles]
[laughing] Please. Can you stop?
[chuckles] You know a little flirting
is fine if you get a free tour.
Sure, but you know he's
gonna wanna sleep with you, right?
He's gonna think
you wanna run away and get married.
- He won't think I wanna get married
- Dream of moving south
Having ten kids.
Yeah, I could do that.
Sure, I'll just have ten of the captain's
kids and move south. [chuckles]
- First one in!
- I've gotta find the earring first.
[woman] Whoo!
What?
[foreboding music playing]
[woman] Ida?
[passengers murmuring]
[woman] Ida?
Ida!
- [passengers talking at once]
- [woman] Ida!
[foreboding music continues]
Ida!
- [captain] We have to leave right now.
- [passengers shouting]
Stop. Stop! She's under the boat.
Just stop the boat.
[all screaming]
[tense music playing]
[female presenter] Ever since 1949,
the peaceful and quiet island of La Palma
has been a ticking time bomb.
[male presenter] During the eruption
in 1949,
there'd been a series
of very strong earthquakes,
and a fault zone had developed
along the crest of the volcano.
[female presenter] We're talking about
the entire flank of the mountain
moving together as one piece
down towards the ocean.
[male presenter] It seems to already be
close to failure.
The crucial question
is not a matter of if,
but of when.
[music fades]
["Feliz Navidad"
by José Feliciano playing]
[singing in Spanish]
[horn honks]
Ah. [sighs] Feel it?
Wow.
- Perfect.
- [woman] Thank you. Merry Christmas.
[driver] Merry Christmas.
When are we going swimming?
Oh, really soon.
We have to get a room first.
Come. Come, come, come.
["Feliz Navidad" continues playing]
Same plastic Christmas tree.
Is it? Hey, look at that.
Exactly the same. That makes me happy.
[song fades]
- [man 1] Yes! [laughs]
- Hey!
- Ah, there you are. It's great to see you.
- [man 2 laughs]
- [man 1] Merry Christmas.
- Merry Christmas.
Okay, who is this?
Last year, you were this tall, and now
you're a grown woman all of a sudden.
- [girl sighs]
- [man 1 laughs]
And what happened to you?
I've just been working out a little.
[man 1] It looks like Fredrik got himself
a new woman.
[all chuckling]
Okay. Well then, I guess I'll see you
out and about, so, um
- [Fredrik] Yeah.
- Have a great time.
- Yeah, talk later. Enjoy.
- [man 1] Yeah. Bye.
- Hi.
- [woman] Hello.
- Welcome to our hotel.
- [Fredrik] Thank you very much.
Actually, we've come here every Christmas
for seven years now.
[speaking Norwegian]
Close enough.
So did you The rental car,
it should have been at the airport.
- A rental car?
- Yeah, José always fixed that.
Yes, I can fix a rental car for you
if you want.
[Fredrik] You can? Super.
We have a new José.
- [woman] Yeah.
- [Fredrik] Yeah.
- Enjoy your holiday.
- [Fredrik] Thank you.
Well, if sleeping with your kids
in the same room is called a holiday
- More like a boot camp, actually.
- [woman laughs] Yes.
Uh, one minute. We had a situation here,
and I think I might be able to fix you
another apartment.
- An apartment?
- [man] Yeah.
A special apartment
for a special lady.
It's at the end of this corridor here.
Top floor.
All right.
Oh! [chuckles]
- Whoa!
- It's different than before?
Oh, it's not, Tobias.
Just have a look with me. Hurry. Come on.
- Let's take a little tour, okay?
- [Tobias] What?
[gasps] Oh, hey, look. There's a desk
where you can draw. Sound good?
"A special room"
- "For a special lady."
- [girl chuckles]
- [woman] He was just being polite.
- [Fredrik] Sure.
- Oh my, my.
- [woman] Oh wow!
[girl] Shit.
You know, I can give him back
the room key if you really want to
- No! No way.
- [woman laughs]
[Fredrik] Bikini?
Yeah, is it a bit much?
No, it's perfect.
It's been a while
since I've seen you wear it.
[draws breath sharply] Yeah.
- [Fredrik] It's great.
- Special bikini for a special lady.
[Fredrik] For a very special lady.
[chuckles]
[woman] Ice grippers?
- That's what Dad brought on this trip?
- You like? [laughs]
- They were in the back here.
- [woman sighs]
And cold cream.
[laughs] Oh boy!
- Thank God I control Tobias's pills.
- [Fredrik] It's for the best. Oh yes.
Somebody left this on the floor.
Let's see.
- Oh yeah.
- [woman] Okay.
Should we try to get in the pool
in less than three minutes?
- Can we do it?
- [Fredrik] Sure.
[woman] Okay. [chuckles]
If you can do it in three minutes,
Dad will buy you a
[mysterious music playing]
LA PALMA
GEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE
- Hi.
- [man] Buenos días.
- Morning.
- [receptionist] Hola.
[man 1] There were also
a swarm of tremors yesterday
[woman] Hello.
They went from the inside of the mountain
all the way to the west coast.
[man 2] Hey there, girl.
There has been a lot of activity there
for a while, right?
- Haukur, can you take a look at it?
- Sure.
[typing on keyboard]
[computer beeps]
- [taps keyboard]
- [beeps]
- Hello.
- [man inhales deeply]
[sighs]
LA PALMA DAILY
[unsettling music playing]
[man] Where were the earthquakes
you were talking about today?
On the southeast coast of La Palma.
At Bonita Beach.
Why?
TRAGIC ACCIDENT ON TOURIST BOA
Is there a problem, or
Álvaro.
Is there a problem?
No, no.
[unsettling music continues]
- Uh, Haukur?
- [Haukur] Yeah?
That measuring equipment
you helped me set up,
it was new, right?
Yeah, sure. State of the art.
Are you sure?
What is the problem?
Mm. It just
It appears that I might've lost
the connection,
and the last signal is from yesterday.
- That's weird.
- [woman] Yeah?
- Look. Nothing happens.
- [computer beeping]
Well, it's not the equipment.
That's perfect because I looked it over.
[woman] Of course.
Yeah, it's probably
you that
- [laughs] Me?
- Yeah.
Yes.
- [Haukur] You're being a rookie.
- Right.
- [Haukur] Again.
- Yeah. So should we go and check it?
[dramatic music playing]
[music fades]
[man] Let's take a picture.
- [woman] 'Cano-campers.
- [Haukur laughs] Yeah.
Are you ready for tonight? Darts and beer?
- Tonight?
- Tonight, yeah.
Uh, last week, I came in last,
so I really guess I got nothing to lose.
[Haukur] You have talent. I can tell.
[woman sighs] Talent?
Anyway, I have to go home to my brother.
He needs me more than you do.
Come on.
- [Haukur] I thought he was doing better?
- [woman] He can still get pretty manic.
Always a new project.
[Haukur] So what is it
you're researching in the caves?
[woman] Well [clears throat]
I wanted to test whether changes
in the level of groundwater could indicate
changes in the physics of the mountain.
[Haukur] Okay, um, like the water making
the mountain unstable?
[woman] Yeah.
The transmitter is still here, but
What do you think?
- It looks fine.
- [woman] Yeah?
[sighs] Yeah.
You sure?
[Haukur] Well, I'll check it,
but it looks fine.
How far in is your equipment?
Uh, it's a couple hundred meters. [sighs]
Yeah.
- This is all fine.
- [woman] Yeah?
Yeah, it looks good.
- [woman] Okay.
- Let's get in there.
- [woman] Be careful though.
- Yeah.
[Haukur grunts]
- [Haukur sighs]
- [woman] Come on!
You know I don't like tight places,
and this fucking helmet is too small,
and you keep telling me
to speak fucking Danish.
[speaks Danish]
[Haukur speaks Danish]
[tense music playing]
[Haukur] What's wrong?
There was no running water
last time I was here.
I'll get a test.
Do you wanna hold it?
Thanks.
[tense music building]
[Haukur] Fuck.
Oh shit.
We need to check the air quality in here.
Can you help me up?
[woman] What?
[beep]
[Haukur] There's an unusually high
concentration of carbon dioxide.
It's not gonna be dangerous to us, but
it must have been higher recently,
otherwise the bats would have survived.
Walk slowly.
[Haukur breathing heavily]
[woman] No, no, no, no, no. [sighs]
Fuck's sake!
Seriously? I'm starting my doctorate
by destroying expensive equipment.
That's great work, Marie!
[Haukur] Oh shit.
[rattling]
- Marie?
- [Marie] What?
[Haukur] That is a seriously big crack.
[tense music building]
[woman] Oh!
[girl] It was a tourist boat
that sank yesterday.
- [Fredrik] Huh?
- [girl] Two Norwegians died.
- Look.
- [mother] Oh no!
Maybe we can talk more about that later
once Tobias has gone to sleep.
You know, Dad and I have talked about
exploring more of the island this year.
We'd talked about taking
that hike on the mountain.
- When do you guys wanna do that?
- Doesn't have to be first.
Can we
get more settled in
[mother] Yeah, but now you're talking
like you always do. We had a deal.
Yeah. See, here comes the food.
- Perfect. Thanks.
- Ah!
[Fredrik] Ay, ay, ay.
Look at that, Tobias. Looks delicious.
- [mother] Wow, that looks nice!
- [Fredrik] Oh yeah.
Is Spanish beer better,
or does it just taste better
'cause we're in Spain, hmm?
- [mother] Tobias?
- It's not the same as the picture.
No, all right. You know,
we've dealt with this before. Let's see.
[mother] We'll fix it.
- [Fredrik] There. We have
- [mother] That's right.
[Fredrik] We'll put this over here
just like that,
and then we'll need a tomato there,
and we'll need to turn it around.
They're not supposed to touch.
- Like that. Yeah.
- No, that won't do.
[Fredrik] Better?
That's super.
The first signs that the volcano has
started to come alive
are earthquakes and gas.
Gas that's toxic.
In some ways,
it's as if the volcano is telling us,
"I am awake now." [chuckles]
And after that, there is ash.
Lots of ash.
The ash is almost like, um,
black snow everywhere.
And sometimes, but not always,
there is lava.
So repeat after me.
- Gas.
- [children] Gas.
Ash.
[children] Ash.
- Lava.
- [children] And lava.
Stay there, okay? I'll be right back.
[Marie] This entire crack,
it was not there a week ago.
[Haukur] You can see the dead bats.
I measured high concentration
of carbon and sulfur dioxide in the air,
so something must have happened recently.
[Marie] Your rainy seasons have become
longer and more powerful.
And because of climate change,
the temperatures are rising.
So does the cloud layers, which means
it rains more in the mountains.
All of this water, it's removing
the friction between the stone layers.
- So this crack
- Mountains move all the time.
And that gas
you are talking about, Haukur,
you of all people should know
that there are small pockets of gas
in all volcanic areas.
We're talking about
an entirely new gap inside the cave.
Who knows what it could lead to?
Earthquakes? Avalanches
[Álvaro] Okay, that's enough!
You talk about climate change,
cracks, and mountains moving?
And all this after being here for a month?
Do you want to finish your doctorate
and succeed as a hydrologist?
[Marie] Yes, of course.
[Álvaro] Then stop adapting
reality into theory.
It's the other way around.
And be prepared to spend years on it,
even the rest of your life.
Do some more homework,
and then we can talk about it.
[sighs]
Come on. Let me show you something.
[Álvaro] Antonio.
- [on phone] Yes?
- Hello. This is Álvaro Pérez.
Álvaro. Haven't heard from you
in a long time.
I'm sorry. I'll get right to it.
Have you done the autopsy on those people
who died in the accident yesterday,
on the boat?
We just received the last body
half an hour ago.
We'll start the autopsies today.
Why do you ask?
Um
I wanted to ask
if you could call me once you're finished.
I'm curious about something to do with it.
Okay. I'll call you.
As you know,
there was an eruption here in 1949.
[Marie] Mm-hmm.
And that created a crack
several kilometers long,
so big you can walk in it.
Okay.
And?
Well And 20 years ago,
these British scientists
theorized that a new eruption could cause
the entire mountainside
to slide off into the sea.
We're talking
500 cubic kilometers of rock.
It's the equivalent of, uh
of Manhattan.
If that crashes into the sea, then
Then you get a tsunami.
Yeah.
[foreboding music playing]
And that tsunami is not
a terribly popular topic around here.
But, Haukur, there is way more groundwater
in that mountain now than it was then,
which means that
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba.
You don't have any evidence of that.
- People still have a right to know.
- [Haukur] Know?
Know what?
Know that something might happen?
Take a seat, please.
Look.
- [sighs] People have a right to know.
- [Marie] Thank you.
That's what Álvaro thought
during the eruption in 2021.
- Really?
- [Haukur] Yeah. He, uh
he went public.
He said there was a real danger
that the mountain could slide.
It caused mayhem.
Almost lost his job.
So he's not gonna do that again
until there's a a tsunami
literally on his doorstep.
But I mean, he was wrong then?
Wrong? [chuckles]
Wrong? Right? I mean, who knows? Uh
For it to happen,
so many factors must occur simultaneously.
I mean,
it would have to be the perfect storm.
And that theory might be wrong.
[Marie] Haukur?
[Haukur] Yeah?
How big would it be?
[Haukur] How big would what be?
The tsunami.
[blows lips]
YouTube it. [chuckles]
[male presenter] In 1949, a crack had
developed alongside the volcano.
[female presenter] That geological rift
is the main reason why this volcano could
one day set off a massive tsunami.
[male presenter] Within 20 or 30 minutes,
all of the wave could
spread out from La Palma
and start a long journey
across the Atlantic Ocean
with catastrophic consequences.
[unsettling music playing]
[gasps softly]
[unsettling music building]
[music fades]
[clears throat]
- Hi!
- [man] Hey!
What are you up to?
Uh, are are you actually cooking?
Yeah.
- Wow!
- Are you all right?
[Marie] Yeah, just a lot of work.
I've been saying that all along.
All you do is work.
- That isn't true.
- And look at this.
- It's like you only eat instant noodles.
- That also isn't true.
- Sure it is.
- No!
[man] Your diet is gonna give you scurvy.
I'm mostly just impressed
that my brother knows how a kitchen works,
'cause I actually didn't think you did.
[man] Yeah, that's a gold star for me
when I go back to the psychologist.
Oh! But hey, hey, hey.
There's something you need to see.
- Come look.
- [Marie] Hmm?
- [man] I found my next diving project.
- Yeah.
- You can actually make your bed.
- Yeah, yeah. But just look at this.
See? Here's a turtle forum
talking about La Palma.
There's something happening here now
that's special.
It seems like they're gathering,
and so somebody shared pictures.
- And there were hundreds of comments.
- What are they saying?
Well, people are really fascinated by them
being here all together
and traveling in the same direction.
That's unusual, apparently.
But Anyway, I have to go.
I thought I might pick up some vegetables,
if you wanted to have a
proper dinner?
- [Marie] Yes.
- [clicks fingers] Nice!
Do you think
I could borrow some money from you?
Yeah, of course.
How much do you need?
[man] Well, maybe a hundred?
If that's okay?
A hundred euros to buy vegetables?
Yeah, well, I do owe a little
to the boat guy for a couple of rides,
but I'll get a job
as soon as I go back to Norway,
and then I promise you I'll pay you back.
[Marie] Mm. Well, I guess that's fine,
even though you're spending all my money.
Thanks. See you later.
[sighs deeply]
- [Álvaro] Burns?
- [man] Gas.
- Gas?
- Extremely hot gas.
We found lethal levels of carbon dioxide
and sulfur dioxide in the lungs.
It had to have heated the water so much
that the glass bottom
of the tour boat cracked.
Thank you.
I owe you.
Álvaro.
What did we learn as kids?
Gas and ash Lava.
Should I be worried about this?
No. Everything's fine.
[solemn music playing]
[music fades]
- [mother] Hi.
- Hi. Got you a chair.
Actually, I'm just about to go for a jog
but thought you might like a walk first?
Right. Uh, I just ordered Thank you.
some snacks, so, uh
Hang on a sec.
- I'll come with.
- [mother] That's great.
I'll, uh, just It won't take long.
Mm! Thanks. Thanks.
Oh wow. That's not a glass of beer.
That's a vase.
Should I go on that walk alone,
do you think?
That's a good idea.
But I'll come tomorrow.
Hey, send some pictures!
[mother] I left my phone in the room.
[exhales deeply]
- [girl 1] What's with your brother?
- [girl 2] Oh!
- [girl 1] I wasn't trying to scare you
- It's all right.
[girl 1] What were you doing
with his food and stuff?
Oh, no, uh, he he won't eat food
whenever the picture
isn't exactly what's on his plate.
[laughs] Really?
Yeah, he's, uh, on the spectrum,
so he's got a lot of things like that.
[sighs] Oh well.
I guess we all are, right?
So, for example, I I have to go left
if the option is there.
Like, if there are
two elevators, for example,
then I'll wait for the left one,
even if the right is free.
[chuckles] Right.
It's really annoying,
but but I can't get admitted for it.
- Not yet.
- [chuckles]
But, hey, a few of us are
going to play some volleyball.
But we're only five,
so we're short one. You in?
Uh
Uh [sighs]
That that that'd be very cool,
but I I've I've gotta look after
my little brother.
Oh. Well, come if you change your mind.
- [girl 2] Yeah.
- Also, I get to play left side.
- [both chuckle]
- [girl 2] Okay.
- [sighs]
- [hopeful music playing]
[music stops]
What was that?
What?
- [Fredrik] What was that?
- Oh, that.
No, they were just a player short
for volleyball.
Why don't you do it?
I've gotta look after Tobias.
[laughs] Stop messing around.
I can watch him from here.
- Come on.
- Yeah?
Hey, you're 17 and always with us.
- [girl] Yeah.
- [Fredrik] Go play. Have some fun.
Yeah, okay.
- Okay?
- Okay.
[both sigh]
[Fredrik] Volleyball is
three touches, right?
- Three touches?
- [Fredrik] Tops.
- With the ball?
- [Fredrik] Finger taps, and this one.
Okay.
- [Tobias] Where are you going?
- [Fredrik] Sara has plans on her own.
But
you know what that means.
Ready?
Don't look.
First one to find it.
[unsettling music playing]
[girl shouts] Yeah!
- [mother] Thank you.
- [man] No worries.
Tobias?
Tobias?
Tobias!
[girl] Hey!
You playing?
Cool. Come.
- Come on.
- [Fredrik] Tobias?
- Have you seen Tobias?
- No.
- He must have come here. Help me look.
- What?
Tobias!
[tense music playing]
Tobias?
[Fredrik] Tobias!
Tobias!
[man] What's wrong?
Have you seen Tobias? He's gone.
What do you mean?
Tobias!
[man] Tobias!
[Sara] Tobias!
[man] No.
[Fredrik] Uh [sighs]
[Sara] But but what if he went
in the water?
The currents could be strong, and
He's still around here, okay?
- [Sara] Tobias!
- [Fredrik] Tobias!
[tense music continues]
Tobias!
Is that him over there?
Up on the rocks?
- [Sara] Tobias!
- [Fredrik] Tobias!
Tobias!
Tobias, my boy.
Oh! God, you can't leave
like that, all right?
Hey.
Was it because I left?
No, no, no, no, no.
No, everything's fine.
No.
Where are they going?
[gentle music playing]
[music stops]
[panting]
- [pop music playing over speakers]
- [cheering]
- Yeah! Whoo!
- Whoo!
Okay, no pressure. Just do it again.
[music continues in background]
[people cheering in background]
[Haukur] Marie?
- We're starting the next round.
- Haukur, come here a minute.
- [Haukur] What?
- Just sit down.
So what is this incredibly boring stuff
you want me to look at?
Well, I analyzed
the water samples from the cave today.
[Haukur] Mm-hmm.
[Marie] Rainwater should take 30 years
to get from the top of that mountain
down into those tunnels.
And as it flows through the rocks,
it gets loaded with minerals.
The samples from today
shows no minerals at all.
[Haukur] Hmm.
And because it's deficient in minerals,
that means it's taken a lot less time
to travel through the mountain.
Yeah, weeks.
Maybe
maybe even days.
Which
could imply that the crack we saw today
goes all the way up through the mountain.
- Can I?
- [Marie] Please.
[Marie sighs]
[exhales quietly]
What?
You see, the place we were today
in the caves,
that is directly beneath the crack
from 1949.
So
so what if I'm right?
Well, if you're right,
it's not a theory anymore, is it?
And we we will drown, you and I.
And those people out there. And
Just, um Okay.
Let's just let's just go up
to the mountain now
and check if anything's
even happened to the crack.
Just
just to make sure that we are
that we are we're completely wrong.
[dramatic music playing]
- [Haukur] Would you grab the case?
- [Marie] Yeah.
- Okay. Where to?
- [Haukur] I'll take that.
We're going up here.
[mysterious music playing]
- [boy] Ready to serve? Come on!
- [girl] Yes.
- Oh!
- [boy] Oh! Yeah!
- Wow! Fantastic!
- [girl laughs]
- Whoa!
- [boy] You got it. Come on!
[reflective music playing]
- Hey!
- [mother] Mm-hmm!
Hi. [sighs]
- I ran up to that other beach.
- Okay.
It was gorgeous.
It was surrounded by
those tiny, designer boutique-y hotels.
Seriously, it was just
a totally different vibe.
- That's fantastic.
- [sighs contentedly] Yeah.
I, uh, opened the wine. Do you want some?
Sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Yes, perfect.
- Why not? Sure.
We have to celebrate that we're here.
And we made the flight this year too.
[chuckles]
Yeah, so [sighs]
You know, you've really been crushing it.
Working out almost every day.
Going to sleep at ten for six months.
Impressive.
Mm-hmm.
Cheers.
Cheers.
And now that we have a room alone
[both chuckle]
How was your afternoon?
Let me see. Our afternoon. Uh
- It was really good. Wonderful.
- Hmm. That's good.
Yeah, yeah. Give the boy a pool,
and he's totally happy.
[laughs]
- Did you see what he was drawing?
- Yeah.
- That star chart.
- Yeah.
I saw him drawing some turtles as well.
Just imagine the universe he has
in his head.
It's incredible.
Wonderful.
[knocking on door]
- Did you order any
- No, I didn't.
- No, I can get it.
- No, no, no. Please, just relax.
[door opens]
- [man] How are you? You good?
- [mother] Yeah. Yeah.
- [man] You left this downstairs.
- [mother laughing]
I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to. I didn't
- [man] Oh, and that place
- [mom] Okay. Where is it?
- Where are we now?
- [man] In this area.
- See? Right here.
- That's nice.
- [man] And
- [Fredrik] Hi there.
- [man clears throat] Hi.
- So did you fix the car?
Um, that's why I'm here.
I've just called all the offices,
but they are fully booked all week.
You called now?
- [man clears throat]
- But I said this morning we needed a car.
- Yes, but
- We have plans tomorrow with the kids
- Just listen
- No, you listen to me, you sneaky little
- Fredrik, it's not a big deal.
- No, but he's in the wrong.
- I'll complain about this.
- [mother] Fredrik!
- This is such bad service.
- I called my brother.
He sells cars, and he will lend you a BMW
for the same price.
Good horsepower and everything. Okay?
Yeah, of course. That's, uh
Yeah, that's great. That's, uh Thank you.
You can pick up the keys tomorrow morning.
- Sorry for interrupting you.
- [Fredrik] No, no.
That's, uh
[inhales deeply, sighs]
It's really good.
That's, um
He upgraded us
to a very nice apartment and a BMW,
and you're complaining like that?
- [Fredrik] Yeah.
- [mother] What's your problem?
[Fredrik] No, sorry,
but that guy needs to calm down a bit.
[mother] He needs to calm down?
He's helping us.
He was hitting on you. You could see him.
I saw you earlier.
[mother sighs]
I'm going to Tobias's room.
- [mysterious music playing]
- [Haukur breathing heavily]
[Marie] Are you okay?
[Haukur, sighing] Yeah.
I'm getting too old for this shit.
[Marie] No.
[Haukur] Okay.
Here we go.
[Haukur grunting]
What the fuck?
[dramatic music playing]
[Haukur] You were right.
It's opened all the way through.
We need to measure this.
[music fades]
They're sleeping,
both of them.
- Maybe for the best.
- [Fredrik] Right.
[Sara sighs]
[Fredrik inhales and exhales deeply]
You and Mom Is something going on?
No. Hey, that's nothing.
It's fine.
You're not like you used to be.
What do you mean?
Well, uh,
before, when we used to stay here
you would just sit outside on the balcony
and be talking for hours into the night.
[chuckles softly]
It was nice to fall asleep to that.
In a way.
Yeah.
[sighs deeply]
No, but it's nothing to
There's not much to
I don't know, Sara,
how much you and I should talk about this.
Come on, Dad.
I can deal with it.
You know I can deal with it.
I just wanna know what's happening.
[sighs]
Yeah.
What's happening. [chuckles]
I
I don't know. It's, uh
You know, when I met your mother,
she was, uh, in a really tough place,
right, after your father ran off,
and really upset, very down. A bit lost.
And she probably needed, um,
a man like me.
Teacher. Nice and safe.
Loves soccer and good food.
Steady-going.
[chuckles]
But, yeah, I was a bit of a scatterbrain,
so she saved me, too, absolutely.
[chuckles]
But the truth is that
sometimes things change.
So right now, I I
[chuckles]
Right now, I don't know for sure.
Does that worry you?
Yes. [clears throat]
A little, I guess.
Like, you You're my dad, you know?
Really.
[Fredrik] Okay, okay.
And you?
- Hmm?
- [Fredrik] Are you okay?
Yeah. Why wouldn't I be?
No, I don't know.
You came with us on holiday.
You're nearly home every weekend.
Shouldn't you be out there having fun?
- Maybe find a sweetheart?
- [both laugh]
[sighs] And what do
- And what do you know about that, huh?
- [Fredrik] No! What do I know?
Well,
don't drink too much of that.
You know Mom wants you to go running
and drink grape juice.
[laughs] Yeah, that's
Have you tasted grape juice?
- No.
- [Fredrik] No, exactly. [laughs]
I'm good. I'm good.
[Sara, sighing] Okay.
[rumbling]
- [man] Anna, you coming?
- Yes. I'm getting my things.
- [man] Blue Monkey Bar?
- Oh no. Please, guys.
The Blue Monkey? No. It's awful. [laughs]
[tense music playing]
[chuckles]
[beeping]
[Anna] What the fuck is this?
Look.
Is all this from a few minutes ago?
[beeping continues]
[Haukur] Just make sure
they're properly facing each other.
[Marie] Is this okay?
- Yeah, looks good.
- [Marie] Okay.
And when you're ready,
you can flip the switch.
[Marie] All right.
[Álvaro] The people on the boat
were killed by gas.
We have an impending
level five earthquake.
What?
And high levels of gas rising
in the mountain.
- How deep is it?
- One kilometer or so.
It's building up quickly.
We're getting a gas emission, Álvaro.
Got to call the Civil Guard.
There might be people up there.
- We're getting some information.
- Yeah?
See those numbers there?
[Marie] But So
It's moving.
[Haukur] Yeah. Not by much,
but it's slipping out.
- Shit, okay. I'll call Álvaro.
- Hmm.
[Marie clears throat]
[line ringing]
- It will start any moment now.
- [phone ringing]
[Álvaro] It's Marie.
- Marie?
- Álvaro, hi.
I am with Haukur in the mountains, and
What?
the crack from 1949 is expanding.
We have the measurements
and everything right here.
Listen. You have to leave your equipment
and get down from there now.
A gas emission is imminent.
Do you hear me?
A gas emission is imminent.
[beeping continues]
[rumbling]
[Marie] Run!
Haukur! Run! Come on!
[Haukur grunts]
[both panting]
[dramatic music playing]
- [Marie] Haukur!
- [Haukur groans]
- Shit!
- [Marie] Come on!
[dramatic music building]
[both panting]
- Hey!
- [Haukur] Run!
- [Marie] It's the volcano-campers!
- [Haukur] Come on! Come on!
Marie! No, no, no!
Marie, we c
[Marie] Hey!
You have to [coughing]
You have to get out of here!
[woman] What?
The gas is poisonous. Come on!
- [coughing]
- [Marie] No, just leave it!
- Leave it!
- Come on! We gotta go!
[all coughing]
[Marie] Do you have water?
Give me your water. Give me this.
- [Haukur] Marie! Run!
- [Marie] Put water on it.
[all coughing]
[Marie] It's gonna be okay.
And just run, okay?
Run!
[dramatic music continues]
[groans, coughing]
[gasping]
[panting]
[grunts]
[beeping]
[mysterious orchestral music playing]
[music fades]
