Mission to Burnley (2023) s01e01 Episode Script
A Bad Day
1
ALAN PACE: 'We're a group
of partners, friends,
that have known each other
for quite some time,
that came together
on the back of
my desire to acquire
a football club
and run it as
our principal business.'
Bring it on.
STUART HUNT: 'We are members
of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter Day Saints,
frequently known as
the Mormons.'
MORGAN EDWARDS: 'That's our DNA.
That is the foundation
of how we came together,
how we work together.'
Yeah, baby!
MIKE SMITH: 'In many ways,
that's really kind of
what faith is all about.
It's something
bigger than ourselves.'
Nice job. Go again, go again.
ALAN: 'Being totally invested,
both emotionally
as well as financially,
is very hard.
Very hard.
And I think that means
that it's always gonna
be challenging for us.'
(CROWD CHANT) Come on, Burnley!
Come on, Burnley!
(WHISTLING AND CHEERING)
(TITLE THEME)
I
I need you
I won't give up
I won't give up.
(CHEERING)
(MUSIC ENDS)
REPORTER: 'Surprise news.
Burnley sacking Sean Dyche
after nearly ten years
in charge.'
'Burnley Football Club
have confirmed
-that they have parted.'
-'Sean Dyche has been sacked.'
-'Sean Dyche no longer.'
-'Surprised many.'
'Respected by players, staff,
supporters and the wider
football community.'
'Probably near
the top five managers
in Premier League history.'
'Chairman Alan Pace
has made the decision
to relieve him on his duties.
Dyche the longest serving
manager in the Premier League.'
'in the Premier League
for the past five seasons
with a modest budget
and famously took them
to Europe in 2017.'
'He was walking on water
for them. Miracles.'
'They are really struggling
in the relegation zone.'
'Four points from safety,
with eight games remaining.'
FAN: 'It's the wrong time to
sack him. It's the wrong time.'
-'Why now, why Friday morning?'
-'On this Good Friday morning?'
'I thought it was April Fool's.
I couldn't believe it.'
'Of all the things I expected
to talk about this morning,
it wouldn't be this man.'
'I can't see what
the owners are thinking.'
'It's just an
horrendous decision.'
'I think it'll just rip
the heart and soul out
of the football game.
There's no need for it
right now.'
ALAN: Somebody said the other
day my legacy was going to be
determined in the next 14 days.
And I went, whoa!
I hope not.
Because if you determine
everything based off of what
I do in the next 14 days
or, you know, wow,
I should definitely disappear
so that I don't make a mistake.
PUNDIT: 'Looking at the picture,
there's West Ham this week.
Southampton. Wolves.
They've got Villa
to come, Spurs.
These are all tricky but there's
still that fighting chance.
-'Eight games to go.'
-'Sure.'
STUART: 'We are in
a heavy and deep
and volatile relegation battle.'
A place that we wish
we weren't in, but we are.
MORGAN:
'We felt coming into this,
we're just gonna
come in and make money.'
If we're relegated, that
imparts some pressure on us.
'We have to stay up.
Winning and losing
is kind of everything now.
It really is.'
FEMALE REPORTER:
'Under 23's coach Mike Jackson,
assisted by Academy Director
Paul Jenkins,
have been asked to take
charge of the team.'
MIKE: 'It was a big shock
for everybody, obviously,
with the gaffer leaving.'
But it was just about what
can we do now to try and, er,
try and galvanise everybody
and get some points.
ASHLEY: 'We are
the underdogs all the time.
I think we thrive off that.'
When people write us off,
we just come good
and just get on
with our business.
(CROWD CHEERING)
COMMENTATOR:
'An invaluable away point.'
'What a few days as well
for Burnley Football Club.'
-Yeah, end of a strange week.
-Can you survive?
I think I'm one of the only
Burnley fans that think we can.
COMMENTATOR:
'Inside for Roberts.
He shapes to shoot.
Oh, what a strike!
Collins with the header.
What a win this is for Burnley.
They're not giving up on
Premier League survival.'
(CHANTING)
'When Dyche left, we all thought
Burnley were gonna be doomed.'
'Can they survive?
Is there Premier League
football next season?'
-'Er, yes, I'm going yes.
Let's go yes.'
-'Go on.'
'What a win. They are
out of the bottom three.'
'They've got a real
togetherness and a real hunger.
I fear for the other teams
below them.'
-'It's stressful, this.'
-'It is a little.
They've got to get
something from today.'
'Goal! Burnley are level!
It could be massive!'
-(CROWD ROARS)
-'Brownhill!
Burnley lead!
Josh Brownhill's got it!
It's three successive wins
in the Premier League!'
ALAN: 'Unbelievable.
A tremendous amount of relief.'
I can't say that
we planned it that way.
MICAH: 'I think Burnley
will stay up.'
Momentum in football
is so massive
and I just believe
they'll do it.
REPORTER: '22 days ago, and
Mike Jackson was given the task
of holding the fort following
Sean Dyche's departure.
Burnley were four points
adrift in the bottom three.
They now sit two points
above the relegation zone.
If they can complete a swift
League double over Villa,
their survival will be
almost certainly assured.'
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
MAN: All the best for the game.
ALAN: 'I don't really think
that we are going down.
I think we have a great
opportunity right in
front of us.'
And it's all because this team
has really come together
and really shown their heart.
-Hello. How are you?
-I'm good. How are you?
-We need to change your cleats.
-(LAUGHS)
-We don't call 'em cleats.
-Oh, sorry.
You need to change your studs.
-We gotta have the correct term.
-I wondered what you meant.
Listen, I have to try
and translate from
you guys all the time.
Getting one of them every
once in a while from me is OK.
-I beg your pardon?
-Oh, yeah! (LAUGHS)
We'll see you later.
It's a lot louder than
the last time we came in.
-Yeah.
-It's a lot busier.
Nice to see we're sold out on
pretty much everywhere
for today, so
-Hi, Chairman.
-Hi. How are you?
-Are you alright?
-I'm good. How are you?
-How are you doing?
-I'm good. How are you?
-Good, thank you.
-Nice to see you.
Great to see you again.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
ALAN: Did you guys already eat?
-WOMAN: Yes.
-OK.
-How are you?
-I'm good. Are you?
-Stressed.
-Yeah, I can imagine.
-It's match day.
-It is. It is.
You know, we've got
a manager search on,
so it brings out
much more anxiety.
Yeah, I know. Surprise.
Nice that you could
join us, though.
-Thanks for having us.
-Ah!
-Good luck.
-Thank you.
-Have you had a good week?
-Yeah, it's been busy.
-Interviewing?
-Yeah, I think we're close.
-Did a few?
-I think we're down to three.
And I think what we'll do,
I was saying to Mike,
I'll hopefully have a document
out for everybody to take
a look at,
and we'll do a call either
Tuesday or Wednesday.
Just kind of go through it,
let people ask questions.
Who is it, Kompany?
Um (BLEEP)
-And what's he like?
-He's actually quite impressive
as an individual.
-I've never met him, but
-I mean,
that's the only thing is like,
I was very impressed.
I was very impressed.
Very impressed as an individual.
-I mean, I didn't
expect to like.
-Yeah.
I was like And Mike said,
you know, "I'm not so sure."
I was like,
"Well, I don't know either."
But that's why you go
and you meet people.
-And find
-He's the one, Kompany
-(BLEEP)
-Who?
-Oh, yeah. I know, yeah.
-Yeah.
-He's good.
-He's very similar to Sean,
so I'm not sure
if that's gonna work.
-See you in a bit.
-See you in a little bit.
See you later.
-OK, sir, good luck.
-Don't cause any trouble.
I have you right here.
(CROWD CHANTS AND ROARS)
ALAN: 'You can't be involved
in something like this
and not think about
the others that have come
either before you, will come
after you, or are, you know,
reliant on what you do.'
(CROWD ROARS)
'My father lived here
in the early Sixties.
He served as a missionary
for our Church.
He urged me that
if I ever had the opportunity
to be able to live, especially
in this part of England,
that it would be
something amazing.'
(CROWD ROARS)
(CROWD CHANTS)
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
'This was a dream.
But that dream came from him.'
COMMENTATOR: 'A miserable
afternoon for the Clarets.
Totally outplayed.'
'I thought we had
quite a bit of the ball.
We were doing what we thought we
would be able to do in the game,
but we just couldn't finish
them off in that first half.'
My God, tell Steve
we're too late.
-How are we doing?
-Hi, Alan. You OK?
-You guys OK for us to come in?
-Of course, yeah.
-How are we feeling?
-Yeah, a tough one.
-A tough one?
-Yeah.
We've actually played
some good football.
There's a lot
of good to be proud of.
There was nothing
to complain about.
No one's unhappy. It's alright.
Keep your chins up.
Look, we don't like to lose,
right? But keep your chins up.
-Hang in there.
-No, we will.
Sure it'll be better than to
take it from Tottenham at home.
(LAUGHTER)
-See you later, guys.
-See you later. Thanks.
TV: 'Joining me now is
Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves,
the MP for Leeds West. We've
heard throughout the programme
that inflation is at
a 30-year high.
The TUC are calling for'
Let's go, lads. Let's
start the job. Let's go.
'This group, it's got ability,
you know, it's got character.'
They put themselves out there
in high-pressure situations
where everyone's said,
you've gotta get something
from this game, from that game.
So they've been living in that
world now for the last month.
COMMENTATOR: 'Burnley gave it
absolutely everything.
Spurs are the winners
by a goal to nil.'
-'How do you rate your chances?'
-'I'm not gonna lie,
I'm very worried.'
'I am disgusted
with that today.'
'That was not good enough.
Hopefully we can get
a result at Villa.'
There's so much energy
and thought
to go into the games
that are remaining.
'Why would you think about
something that's not happened,
might not happen?'
'To be quite honest,
I've lived it previously
and so I know the consequences
of relegation'
from the Premier League
and I know, you know,
that weighs a lot
on your shoulders.
We now need to up the tempo!
'It's gonna be a challenge.
It's gonna be a challenge,'
but the belief's there
that we can get over the line.
COMMENTATOR:
'It's a big point for Burnley,
but it should
have been all three.
They will be kicking themselves
they couldn't convert
their chances.'
'Are Burnley staying
in the Premier League?'
FAN: 'If we go down now, they've
only got themselves to blame.'
-'Are you accepting relegation?'
-'No. Well, I hope not.'
-'Of course, mate. Of course.'
-(FAN LAUGHS)
This is the vital bit
to the end of the season.
This could ride on
so many people's lives,
so many people's jobs
throughout the club.
My life, really.
My family's life.
'Burnley's a small town.
There's only 90,000 people
that live here.'
The economic value of what
a football club can bring,
'it's so important.
You're talking about your local
pubs and your local restaurants
or your cafes, you know, and
you've got a full house at Turf,
now that's gonna bring
investment and it's gonna bring
economic value to the town.
You know, you're sitting in
League Two, with 5,000 people,
it's going to be impacted.
The feelgood factor
of the town as well,
that's the other thing.'
If the football team can give
that to the people of the town,
then that'd mean everything.
And that's what we're
trying to do.
STUART: 'Ever since the decision
to part ways with Sean,
we always kind of had
this inner feeling that it
was going to come
to the last game.'
And now we have one final game
against Newcastle on Sunday.
ALAN: Every game
matters this weekend.
It's all on the line and it's
the last game of the year.
When was the last time
you saw that?
Every single team mattered
at the last game of the season.
And now what goes
on with Leeds, right?
We have to
match their result
or better.
MORGAN: I think most of us,
in our career, faced
a lot of stress
-and we can literally
do nothing, right?
-Yeah.
Mid-career, we underwrote
a leveraged buyout deal
for a billion seven,
a very well-known
consumer brand.
They insisted we pre-fund it
and so we did.
Then we found out about three
weeks later, after we'd sold it,
total fraud.
That was my firm's money.
They could absorb it. This one
really troubles me more
because this one, it's us,
right? It's our investors.
-Yeah.
-JOHN: There's
the people side of it too.
There's a huge social aspect,
community aspect to this
that really impacts the folks
in the town or community
and the players, you know?
It's it's a lot to think
about from that perspective.
When it comes down to it,
the last real reality show
is live sport, right,
and we can't control that.
-In the end, what happens?
-It's not in our hands.
It's what happens, right?
We keep moving forward
one step after another.
-We started this journey with
a lot of faith, right?
-Yeah.
We keep coming with that same
faith that whatever it is,
it will work out.
You know, in my heart,
I feel like we've got this one.
-How are you doing?
-OK.
(SHE LAUGHS)
I appreciate everything,
even if we go down.
And while that's
not gonna happen,
we're staying in this league
for a long time.
Three points today. Sorry?
It's got to be three.
Three points, right?
Yeah. Let's go. Good job, guys.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
(LAUGHS) Alan,
you've got us all sucked in.
I was gonna say,
that's pretty high praise.
-No pressure, Alan.
-None at all.
I don't feel it anyway,
so don't worry.
I can tell, right?
Just another day at the office.
(SIGHS)
ALAN: 'It's just a huge weight
which people will probably
never understand.
And I can feel it
when it's creeping in.
Anxiety and fear and worry,
wanting to be alone
and crawl under a rock
or something just to make the,
you know, the fear go away.'
-OK.
-Alright?
Yeah. All good?
-How are you?
-Nervous.
Aren't we all?
That's what makes it fun.
(CROWD CHANT) Come on, Burnley!
Come on, Burnley!
Come on, Burnley!
Come on, Burnley!
COMMENTATOR: 'The tension
palpable around Turf Moor.
A packed house
who know that Burnley
must better or equal
a Leeds result,
or else they face the drop.'
(DREAMLIKE CHANTING)
'There's a VAR check
in progress.
Now, Newcastle have got
a penalty here.
Oh, that's slick.
Newcastle double their lead.'
Leeds are winning one-nil.
-(CROWD ROARS)
-'Cornet pulls one back.
Now then, just a little
over ten minutes to go
for Burnley to
rescue themselves.
The crowd have heard something,
haven't they?
Brentford are level.
Brentford one, Leeds one.
Now, if Burnley score again,
Leeds United will be relegated
and Burnley would stay up.'
(CROWD ROARS)
'And the full-time whistle goes.
Burnley one, Newcastle two.
And with that,
Burnley are relegated
from the Premier League.'
(LAUGHS)
(INHALES DEEPLY)
Oh.
And in some ways, there's
some good that can come
from this, right?
Yeah.
I mean, without being too,
sort of, dramatic about it,
-it's your club now. Yeah.
-Yeah.
You manage a new team.
Get back in on our own merits.
-Yeah.
-And we're not on anyone
else's coattails anymore.
We're gonna do this our way.
-I was thinking the same thing.
-Yeah.
(LAUGHS)
REPORTER: 'Should friendly fans
really press the panic button?'
'If you're a Burnley fan,
you should be looking
in between the cracks.
These guys are not
white knights of Burnley.
This is an American leverage
purchase, right,
which has real jeopardy
attached to it.
Before they bought
that football club,
they had 42 million quid
in the bank.
They had a category one academy,
they had Sean Dyche
and Premier League football.
Now there are £102 million
in debt.
The academy's been downgraded.
They've got to pay
a £65m loan back.
They've got no permanent boss
and they're in the Championship.
These guys have got
a wake-up call coming.'
FAN: 'Flabbergasted again.
Just absolutely shocked.'
FAN: 'Put us in a load of debt.
This isn't how
Burnley do business.'
'This is not a game now, Pace.
This is not a game.
There's media people saying
we're gonna end up in League One
at this time next year.'
'I don't think these
Americans understand Burnley.'
There's a lot of comments
all over social media.
"Pace out", "Yankee rat".
Yeah, lots of lots of
things about being American.
It truly has been the most
stressful period
in our entire marriage.
'He's always had
stressful positions
in the work that he's done.
But this is above and beyond,'
to the point that
I actually have asked
several times, is this worth it?
ALAN: 'If it wasn't for
our ability to come here,
reflect, and also seek
inspiration, I'd be lost.
We believe that we have
a saviour that came'
to atone for our sins
and for the errors that
we make here on this Earth.
'The hurdles that we have to
overcome is aligning our will
with our Heavenly
Father's will.'
I changed my prayers.
'And I said, OK,
if we're not meant to be
in the Premier League, help me
to understand where we go.'
ALAN: Yes, I did.
That's a bigger conversation.
OK. She's wants
to talk about all
-Right.
-So noon on Thursday, but
we'll go through more stuff.
Let's Yeah.
-Is there just hot water?
-There is. It's in a cup.
-Thank you.
-It's good to see you, Alan.
-It's nice to be here.
-I haven't seen you
for a while.
Been working on a few things,
the new manager, and
At least we know it's a he.
That's a big clue!
-(SHE LAUGHS)
-OK.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUSE)
So thank you, first and
foremost, for getting together.
I know there's
a lot of disappointment,
both in our fan base and
internally with what
happened on Sunday.
OK?
We, all collectively in here,
can't control
what happens out there.
It's the most frustrating part
of whatever you wanna do
around sport, is you don't
get to control what happens.
But it can't be that we
get into the doldrums of,
oh, my goodness, we just went
down, this is it, this is over.
We have to react to it.
So really, what
all starts now is how do
we react to what's happened?
OK?
Our priority right
at the moment has to be
on getting the team back
to the Premier League.
You know, it's not lost
on social media
and on everybody else
that our team has aged.
And we need to refresh. And I'm
looking forward to that change.
I can promise you,
we're not going anywhere.
We've got a long journey
still ahead of us.
Thank you.
Oh, I did prom I did
promise I will answer questions.
Yes, go ahead.
We're close. OK.
Yeah, that'sthat's as best
we're gonna get for right now
without giving you who.
'I've met with and spoken to
a number of individuals.
I've kind of bucketed
the overall conversations
into three categories
in regards to
kind of what they
could bring to us.
We're down to probably
three individuals.'
So your tone's changed
a little bit
after being in Belgium
a couple of times.
Like after, I mean, we spent
a lot of time with a few others.
I thought we were kind of
going a different direction.
I don't know. It just
It's so different from
the others that we've been
talking to, you know.
Dynamic.
-Creative.
-Mm-hmm.
Thoughtful. Um
I won't It's not visionary,
but it's evolutionary.
You know, willing to,
like, change.
-I was blown away.
-Really?
I was supposed to
catch the train back,
and I missed four trains, so
So something good
was going on, right?
I think he took on board
the vision of
what we're trying to do and how
we're trying to accomplish it.
But I would say it became
a combined vision very,
very quickly
as to how my thinking evolved
just in talking with him.
We haven't met
someone like this.
Does he fit with us? You think
he's gonna gel with us?
I mean, can he Can he see
and communicate
like we need to
I mean, are we gonna be
able to be close to him?
Yes, I do think he fits with us.
-I think he probably asked
the same question of us.
-The other way around.
On the other way around
and wondering, you know, look,
are these just a bunch of
weirdos that have come to
come into English football?
The judgement's still
out on that, right?
Yeah, yeah. Probably
more than we would like.
I mean, there's
no question about
his reputation on the pitch,
right? So he comes
strong leadership, strong
work ethic. He's a legend.
But, you know, I think
there's still some
thoughtfulness and prayer
that has to go into it.
But I'm
I'm leaning at this
this is what we're
supposed to do.
It feels right.
(CAMERA SHUTTERS CLICK)
MAN: Good afternoon.
-Good afternoon. How you doing?
-Welcome to Burnley.
Thank you.
-Nice to see you.
-Nice to see you.
REPORTER:
'Burnley have a new manager,
and that man is Vincent Kompany,
the former Manchester City
captain, a title winner
as a player.'
'Would this be a brave move?
A bold move?'
-'A bit of both, I imagine.'
-'Yeah.'
'It's certainly
a left-field move, isn't it?'
-'I think it's risky, me.'
-'Do you?'
'You're bringing in a manager
with no Premier League
experience.'
'It's fair to say, he didn't
pull up trees at Anderlecht
when he was over in Belgium.'
Jeff, I can walk but I
don't know where I'm going.
Sorry, mate. Sorry.
Don't worry about it.
We can do it in the canteen.
-It's more relaxed.
-Don't worry.
Just everybody there with
a coffee. I'll go to
the office first.
Straight on. Yeah.
How are you doing, Mike? Good?
-Good to see you. Are
the other fellas alright?
-Yeah, yeah.
-Yeah, welcome, man.
-Thank you, thank you.
-You made it.
-It's good to be here.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
Right, I think I've seen
everyone, so
First and foremost, you know,
I wanted to say how proud I am,
how happy I am to be part of
this place, to get the chance,
to get the privilege to,
you know, work with you guys.
The main thing I wanted to say
is when you come into
this place,
you can straight away feel
that there is something,
there is something special here.
There is a part of me that says
I wanna protect this
as much as I can.
But the ambitious part of me
as well says I wanna improve it.
And we'll give you a lot
more information than
other teams and other clubs
have got to deal with.
That's who we are. That's what
we want to bring to this club.
Just use it. Use it to become
better. Use it to improve.
Success is not just winning
trophies, you know?
Success is overachieving
on the resources you have.
So, we'll go
straight into business.
We'll go into the meeting room,
I'll explain to you
what we'll do in training.
We take a group
outside on the pitch,
group one and two
switch for tomorrow.
And then we're on a normal
schedule from Thursday onwards.
Yes, lads? Let's go.
VINCENT: 'I've been used to
being around young players.'
That was the nature of my job
when I was in Anderlecht,
and now I'm finding a group
that's a bit more experienced.
-(WHISTLE BLOWS)
-Guys, get in four groups.
Get your position
and you stay
VINCENT: 'I'm looking
for good people.'
-(WHISTLE BLOWS)
-Let's go!
'When you have good people,
then that is a start
to having a good team,
and then the rest
comes after that.'
Go, go, go, go! Go, go!
So hard facts. With relegation,
we're gonna get
a Championship payment.
So that's not going to be
a lot of money.
So it's important to start
the season with a decent
amount of cash such
that we're liquid and healthy
and able to fund
the rest of our season.
So July, August
will be important from
a trading perspective
to make sure we support
the cash levels we've got,
but maybe some player tradings.
ALAN: It'd just be
such a shame to have
so much of what we've
done in the last 18 months
of bringing in people
to just turn around
and actually have to redo it.
So that's why you're the
chairman. It's a hard decision.
Well, let's see. I think
the hard decision comes when
Vince comes in and says,
this is what we have to have.
Do you think he's gonna
want to keep most of the guys
or will he want a makeover
We don't know him well
enough yet.
I mean, from the stuff
that we've gone through,
I think it was very clear
that we needed
to make some significant change.
The idea right now is
to come up with obviously
a lot more goal threat
upfront than we've had
because we're playing
a different style of football.
What's it gonna cost
in the Championship?
-It's probably
-Five? Ten?
Somewhere between there. Yeah,
probably eight to ten maybe.
Wow. That's a big number
for us now, right?
From what you just said,
I don't know that we can do it.
If you wanna refresh the squad
and we wanna start from
a position of cash strength,
I'd say you've
got to raise that
from probably the transfers.
The real question is gonna be
what's this new team
gonna look like?
I I have no idea.
(LAUGHS)
It's gonna be cheaper,
I guess, right?
(LAUGHS)
BORIS JOHNSON ON TV: 'Thank you
very much for coming in today.
Early today, Sue Gray
published her final report
which I commissioned to get
to the bottom of things
and to set the record straight.
She's identified a number
of failings,
some official,
some political'
ALAN: Sound OK? Can you hear us
OK? Or do we sound too far away?
OK. All thumbs up. So we're
gonna go ahead and get started.
Sorry about this moving around
a little bit.
We felt that it was
important to take a dive
into the changes
in the financials.
The first thing I wanna really
address is just what happens
if we're relegated.
If you finish 17th,
you get 102 million
from the League.
If you're relegated,
your parachute payment
is 46.5 million,
so you lose
56 million of revenue,
no matter what, at a minimum.
I wanna talk about debt now,
at January 2022.
So at the beginning of this
year, we still had 65 million.
It's an interest-only loan
so long as you're not relegated.
So what are we
gonna do about that?
We've sold 16 million dollars'
worth of players.
On top of that, we no longer
have to pay their salaries.
These are typically our highest
paid guys. On the coaching side,
we've also made a serious
move in rotating out.
But we do have legacy costs
for Sean and his team.
When all is said and done,
that leaves us
basically flat with cash.
ALAN: So with that, this is the
first time for all of you to get
to meet Vince in person.
We'll let, you know,
Vince walk us through
how the squad's developing,
how he thinks about it.
Yeah, first and foremost,
we are pleased to meet
most of you for the first time.
If I can simplify everything,
it's really just about
one thing.
It's the most valuable
product that we have,
it's what happens
on the football pitch.
It's 90 minutes once a week,
twice a week,
and everything has to be
culminating towards that.
It's the absolute priority
and it's the only priority.
Basically, we need to fill
the team with tradable assets.
That's the name of the game.
You can do as much as you want
around the club
to generate revenue.
Nothing will generate
anywhere close
except for the TV money
from the Premier League.
But every year
in the Championship,
the only way to generate
revenue is to sell players,
like substantially.
But the fine margin between
having a very healthy
squad financially and a squad
who's able to perform,
that's, I think, where it
comes in a little bit my
It's the passion that I have.
So I have a passion for
performance and winning games.
I wake up every morning
with only one idea,
it's how we can
win on the weekend.
But as well, I don't mind
winning in the long run.
'I just wanted to hear you say
exactly what you've said,
-which is "I'm here to win".'
-No worries about that.
Turnover is really dangerous
in this business
because it makes or breaks you.
It's an opportunity that I saw,
which is the reason why
I went to Burnley as well,
because I saw it as an
opportunity, because for me
to impose my style
of football and my ideas,
it's much easier with
a high turnover of players
than with a low
turnover of players.
But I'll take a bullet,
it's not a problem,
but it's just that the whole
ship needs to stay calm.
That's so important,
and we have a plan
and if something goes wrong,
we just need to make sure we
understand why it's gone wrong
and we adapt and we improve.
Yeah?
-Right, thank you.
-Thanks, guys.
Thank you, guys.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
-Hi, lads. Are you OK?
-What's the brief?
What's the aim? What's
the chairman said to you
that you need to be achieving?
The ambition is always
as you come down to go back up.
You've only got
five weeks, though.
How difficult is it to blend
a squad together in five weeks?
I think that's the hardest part.
'The Championship, it's brutal.
It's relentless.'
It's the most difficult league
in the world to get out of.
VINCENT: 'Success,
that's the very end of it.
The beginning is hard work.'
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
Come on, go again!
'We're looking at him,
thinking, I need to up my level
because they're
watching everything.
VINCENT: Control
the tempo of the ball.
-When you get the chance
to break, break.
-Let's go!
'The standards that
the gaffer sets are so high.'
He demands so much from us.
Everything is depending
on your angles.
'The detail he goes into'
in meetings and on the pitch
is unbelievable.
Make sure you split them.
'I'm not sure he sleeps.
I really ain't.'
The hours he works, that's
who he is. He's different.
-Let's go, let's go!
-(WHISTLE BLOWS)
Here we go.
'The first week we were here,
I asked him,'
do you want us to keep
all the same traditions
and all the same stuff
as the last group we had?
I think it was keen to keep
a lot of the same values we had.
So, it was my birthday, it was,
like, the first week here
and I bought in four trays
of Krispy Kreme doughnuts
(LAUGHS) ..and
put them in the kitchen.
And, like,
I didn't see 'em all day.
And I was like,
where's these doughnuts?
The nutritionist was like,
you can't have doughnuts.
The manager called a meeting.
He said you shouldn't be eating
doughnuts at training ground.
So I gave them all to the staff.
But, yeah, I was a bit
embarrassed at the time.
Try and break the line
with your pass.
VINCENT: 'I'm really fixated on
the perfection side of things.
Almost the artistic side.
I want my team to
play in a certain way.
I want creative players
who feel free and enjoy the game
and score. Create chances.
To be more disciplined,
faster, more aggressive.'
If you get a chance to score,
you score. Here we go.
'Let's be honest, we're going
to have some tough times ahead.'
It's not going to be just
a straight path to success.
'It's not rocket science.
The hardest part about football
is just keeping people calm.'
I'll remind you of that.
(CROWD CHEERS)
-You're looking smart today.
-And you.
-Are you alright?
-Yes, alright.
REPORTER: 'It's been a busy
summer for Vincent Kompany.
The former Manchester City
captain has brought in
nine players so far.
It's a new dawn.
He'll be hoping
these fresh faces
can take Burnley straight back
into the Premier League.'
(PHONE LINE RINGS)
-'Hi, Alan.'
-Hi, Vince. How are you?
'Yeah, I'm fine. How you doing?'
I'm doing OK.
We're about to have a ceremony
here in just a little bit,
but I wanted to give you
a shout real quick before
you guys get started,
so I know we both have
big days today.
(LAUGHS)
'Yeah, Yeah.
Oh, yeah. Course.
You've got that wedding.'
-(LAUGHS)
-'Yeah, I was like,
I was thinking, yeah,
I think the ceremony,
-the pre-match ceremony. Yeah.'
-(LAUGHS)
'But if it's a wedding,
no, you're right.
I think yours
is more important.'
Well, yours is still
very important to us.
Don't get this wrong.
-How are you feeling?
-'Good, good, good, good.
Prepared for sure. And
and then the only thing
you don't control is,
you know, first time
in the Championship,
you know, how your players
are going to react.
-But that'spart of the game.'
-Yeah. Well, look,
it all starts here.
So this is the beginning.
So very much looking forward
to seeing how it goes.
But we're in this one together
and we know you got it.
-So
-'Thank you. Appreciate it.'
MAN: Throughout this audience,
people come from far and wide
to be here today, and, uh,
it's a glorious venue
and a wonderful opportunity
to be with you on this
very special day.
(THUNDER RUMBLES)
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
Come on, boys. Come on!
COMMENTATOR:
'It's a new era, a new dawn.
We're all fascinated
to see how they'll play
under Vincent Kompany.'
Go on, Burnley!
(CROWD CHANTS) Come on, Burnley!
Come on, Burnley!
(CROWD GASPS)
(SHOUTING)
COMMENTATOR:
'Maatsen with the finish! Oh!'
-(CROWD ROARS)
-'That's a sublime move!
Burnley lead.
It'll be Twine
with the free kick.
Oh, he's struck the post. Oh!'
And we almost scored again.
(CROWD CHANTS)
-(WHISTLE BLOWS)
-Yeah!
'A huge statement from Burnley
and from Vincent Kompany
and his first game in charge.
After relegation, that is a big
result on the opening day.'
Yes, come on! Yeah!
Whatwhat a night.
Vincent, congratulations.
This could be a dream start.
-Clean sheet. You must be happy.
-Yeah, I couldn't have
asked for more.
Come on!
VINCENT: 'We were hungry.
We werewe were motivated.
Aggressive.
We controlled every
aspect of the game.'
PUNDIT: You've spoken about not
losing the positive elements
of Burnley over the years
and keeping that togetherness
and how important
that's gonna be for you
for the rest of the season.
That's one thing that this club
has got more than anything.
It's good people behind
the scenes and a team
that's really used
to putting the hard work.
'We're not there,
don't get me wrong.
But it's one step
in the right direction
showing what we could do.'
(CROWD ROARS)
'I do not want to freak out
the rest of the organisation.'
We may or may not get out
of the Championship this year.
Open your mouth! Your team's
getting battered
and we're saying nothing!
Don't fuck about!
'Transfer deadline day.'
I finished up the numbers.
Way over.
Our position is clear.
The deal is off.
The stress level here is unlike
anything that I've ever done.
Why is he allowed to go
through the back of me?
VINCENT:
'We've got to get better.'
(END TITLES THEME)
ALAN PACE: 'We're a group
of partners, friends,
that have known each other
for quite some time,
that came together
on the back of
my desire to acquire
a football club
and run it as
our principal business.'
Bring it on.
STUART HUNT: 'We are members
of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter Day Saints,
frequently known as
the Mormons.'
MORGAN EDWARDS: 'That's our DNA.
That is the foundation
of how we came together,
how we work together.'
Yeah, baby!
MIKE SMITH: 'In many ways,
that's really kind of
what faith is all about.
It's something
bigger than ourselves.'
Nice job. Go again, go again.
ALAN: 'Being totally invested,
both emotionally
as well as financially,
is very hard.
Very hard.
And I think that means
that it's always gonna
be challenging for us.'
(CROWD CHANT) Come on, Burnley!
Come on, Burnley!
(WHISTLING AND CHEERING)
(TITLE THEME)
I
I need you
I won't give up
I won't give up.
(CHEERING)
(MUSIC ENDS)
REPORTER: 'Surprise news.
Burnley sacking Sean Dyche
after nearly ten years
in charge.'
'Burnley Football Club
have confirmed
-that they have parted.'
-'Sean Dyche has been sacked.'
-'Sean Dyche no longer.'
-'Surprised many.'
'Respected by players, staff,
supporters and the wider
football community.'
'Probably near
the top five managers
in Premier League history.'
'Chairman Alan Pace
has made the decision
to relieve him on his duties.
Dyche the longest serving
manager in the Premier League.'
'in the Premier League
for the past five seasons
with a modest budget
and famously took them
to Europe in 2017.'
'He was walking on water
for them. Miracles.'
'They are really struggling
in the relegation zone.'
'Four points from safety,
with eight games remaining.'
FAN: 'It's the wrong time to
sack him. It's the wrong time.'
-'Why now, why Friday morning?'
-'On this Good Friday morning?'
'I thought it was April Fool's.
I couldn't believe it.'
'Of all the things I expected
to talk about this morning,
it wouldn't be this man.'
'I can't see what
the owners are thinking.'
'It's just an
horrendous decision.'
'I think it'll just rip
the heart and soul out
of the football game.
There's no need for it
right now.'
ALAN: Somebody said the other
day my legacy was going to be
determined in the next 14 days.
And I went, whoa!
I hope not.
Because if you determine
everything based off of what
I do in the next 14 days
or, you know, wow,
I should definitely disappear
so that I don't make a mistake.
PUNDIT: 'Looking at the picture,
there's West Ham this week.
Southampton. Wolves.
They've got Villa
to come, Spurs.
These are all tricky but there's
still that fighting chance.
-'Eight games to go.'
-'Sure.'
STUART: 'We are in
a heavy and deep
and volatile relegation battle.'
A place that we wish
we weren't in, but we are.
MORGAN:
'We felt coming into this,
we're just gonna
come in and make money.'
If we're relegated, that
imparts some pressure on us.
'We have to stay up.
Winning and losing
is kind of everything now.
It really is.'
FEMALE REPORTER:
'Under 23's coach Mike Jackson,
assisted by Academy Director
Paul Jenkins,
have been asked to take
charge of the team.'
MIKE: 'It was a big shock
for everybody, obviously,
with the gaffer leaving.'
But it was just about what
can we do now to try and, er,
try and galvanise everybody
and get some points.
ASHLEY: 'We are
the underdogs all the time.
I think we thrive off that.'
When people write us off,
we just come good
and just get on
with our business.
(CROWD CHEERING)
COMMENTATOR:
'An invaluable away point.'
'What a few days as well
for Burnley Football Club.'
-Yeah, end of a strange week.
-Can you survive?
I think I'm one of the only
Burnley fans that think we can.
COMMENTATOR:
'Inside for Roberts.
He shapes to shoot.
Oh, what a strike!
Collins with the header.
What a win this is for Burnley.
They're not giving up on
Premier League survival.'
(CHANTING)
'When Dyche left, we all thought
Burnley were gonna be doomed.'
'Can they survive?
Is there Premier League
football next season?'
-'Er, yes, I'm going yes.
Let's go yes.'
-'Go on.'
'What a win. They are
out of the bottom three.'
'They've got a real
togetherness and a real hunger.
I fear for the other teams
below them.'
-'It's stressful, this.'
-'It is a little.
They've got to get
something from today.'
'Goal! Burnley are level!
It could be massive!'
-(CROWD ROARS)
-'Brownhill!
Burnley lead!
Josh Brownhill's got it!
It's three successive wins
in the Premier League!'
ALAN: 'Unbelievable.
A tremendous amount of relief.'
I can't say that
we planned it that way.
MICAH: 'I think Burnley
will stay up.'
Momentum in football
is so massive
and I just believe
they'll do it.
REPORTER: '22 days ago, and
Mike Jackson was given the task
of holding the fort following
Sean Dyche's departure.
Burnley were four points
adrift in the bottom three.
They now sit two points
above the relegation zone.
If they can complete a swift
League double over Villa,
their survival will be
almost certainly assured.'
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
MAN: All the best for the game.
ALAN: 'I don't really think
that we are going down.
I think we have a great
opportunity right in
front of us.'
And it's all because this team
has really come together
and really shown their heart.
-Hello. How are you?
-I'm good. How are you?
-We need to change your cleats.
-(LAUGHS)
-We don't call 'em cleats.
-Oh, sorry.
You need to change your studs.
-We gotta have the correct term.
-I wondered what you meant.
Listen, I have to try
and translate from
you guys all the time.
Getting one of them every
once in a while from me is OK.
-I beg your pardon?
-Oh, yeah! (LAUGHS)
We'll see you later.
It's a lot louder than
the last time we came in.
-Yeah.
-It's a lot busier.
Nice to see we're sold out on
pretty much everywhere
for today, so
-Hi, Chairman.
-Hi. How are you?
-Are you alright?
-I'm good. How are you?
-How are you doing?
-I'm good. How are you?
-Good, thank you.
-Nice to see you.
Great to see you again.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
ALAN: Did you guys already eat?
-WOMAN: Yes.
-OK.
-How are you?
-I'm good. Are you?
-Stressed.
-Yeah, I can imagine.
-It's match day.
-It is. It is.
You know, we've got
a manager search on,
so it brings out
much more anxiety.
Yeah, I know. Surprise.
Nice that you could
join us, though.
-Thanks for having us.
-Ah!
-Good luck.
-Thank you.
-Have you had a good week?
-Yeah, it's been busy.
-Interviewing?
-Yeah, I think we're close.
-Did a few?
-I think we're down to three.
And I think what we'll do,
I was saying to Mike,
I'll hopefully have a document
out for everybody to take
a look at,
and we'll do a call either
Tuesday or Wednesday.
Just kind of go through it,
let people ask questions.
Who is it, Kompany?
Um (BLEEP)
-And what's he like?
-He's actually quite impressive
as an individual.
-I've never met him, but
-I mean,
that's the only thing is like,
I was very impressed.
I was very impressed.
Very impressed as an individual.
-I mean, I didn't
expect to like.
-Yeah.
I was like And Mike said,
you know, "I'm not so sure."
I was like,
"Well, I don't know either."
But that's why you go
and you meet people.
-And find
-He's the one, Kompany
-(BLEEP)
-Who?
-Oh, yeah. I know, yeah.
-Yeah.
-He's good.
-He's very similar to Sean,
so I'm not sure
if that's gonna work.
-See you in a bit.
-See you in a little bit.
See you later.
-OK, sir, good luck.
-Don't cause any trouble.
I have you right here.
(CROWD CHANTS AND ROARS)
ALAN: 'You can't be involved
in something like this
and not think about
the others that have come
either before you, will come
after you, or are, you know,
reliant on what you do.'
(CROWD ROARS)
'My father lived here
in the early Sixties.
He served as a missionary
for our Church.
He urged me that
if I ever had the opportunity
to be able to live, especially
in this part of England,
that it would be
something amazing.'
(CROWD ROARS)
(CROWD CHANTS)
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
'This was a dream.
But that dream came from him.'
COMMENTATOR: 'A miserable
afternoon for the Clarets.
Totally outplayed.'
'I thought we had
quite a bit of the ball.
We were doing what we thought we
would be able to do in the game,
but we just couldn't finish
them off in that first half.'
My God, tell Steve
we're too late.
-How are we doing?
-Hi, Alan. You OK?
-You guys OK for us to come in?
-Of course, yeah.
-How are we feeling?
-Yeah, a tough one.
-A tough one?
-Yeah.
We've actually played
some good football.
There's a lot
of good to be proud of.
There was nothing
to complain about.
No one's unhappy. It's alright.
Keep your chins up.
Look, we don't like to lose,
right? But keep your chins up.
-Hang in there.
-No, we will.
Sure it'll be better than to
take it from Tottenham at home.
(LAUGHTER)
-See you later, guys.
-See you later. Thanks.
TV: 'Joining me now is
Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves,
the MP for Leeds West. We've
heard throughout the programme
that inflation is at
a 30-year high.
The TUC are calling for'
Let's go, lads. Let's
start the job. Let's go.
'This group, it's got ability,
you know, it's got character.'
They put themselves out there
in high-pressure situations
where everyone's said,
you've gotta get something
from this game, from that game.
So they've been living in that
world now for the last month.
COMMENTATOR: 'Burnley gave it
absolutely everything.
Spurs are the winners
by a goal to nil.'
-'How do you rate your chances?'
-'I'm not gonna lie,
I'm very worried.'
'I am disgusted
with that today.'
'That was not good enough.
Hopefully we can get
a result at Villa.'
There's so much energy
and thought
to go into the games
that are remaining.
'Why would you think about
something that's not happened,
might not happen?'
'To be quite honest,
I've lived it previously
and so I know the consequences
of relegation'
from the Premier League
and I know, you know,
that weighs a lot
on your shoulders.
We now need to up the tempo!
'It's gonna be a challenge.
It's gonna be a challenge,'
but the belief's there
that we can get over the line.
COMMENTATOR:
'It's a big point for Burnley,
but it should
have been all three.
They will be kicking themselves
they couldn't convert
their chances.'
'Are Burnley staying
in the Premier League?'
FAN: 'If we go down now, they've
only got themselves to blame.'
-'Are you accepting relegation?'
-'No. Well, I hope not.'
-'Of course, mate. Of course.'
-(FAN LAUGHS)
This is the vital bit
to the end of the season.
This could ride on
so many people's lives,
so many people's jobs
throughout the club.
My life, really.
My family's life.
'Burnley's a small town.
There's only 90,000 people
that live here.'
The economic value of what
a football club can bring,
'it's so important.
You're talking about your local
pubs and your local restaurants
or your cafes, you know, and
you've got a full house at Turf,
now that's gonna bring
investment and it's gonna bring
economic value to the town.
You know, you're sitting in
League Two, with 5,000 people,
it's going to be impacted.
The feelgood factor
of the town as well,
that's the other thing.'
If the football team can give
that to the people of the town,
then that'd mean everything.
And that's what we're
trying to do.
STUART: 'Ever since the decision
to part ways with Sean,
we always kind of had
this inner feeling that it
was going to come
to the last game.'
And now we have one final game
against Newcastle on Sunday.
ALAN: Every game
matters this weekend.
It's all on the line and it's
the last game of the year.
When was the last time
you saw that?
Every single team mattered
at the last game of the season.
And now what goes
on with Leeds, right?
We have to
match their result
or better.
MORGAN: I think most of us,
in our career, faced
a lot of stress
-and we can literally
do nothing, right?
-Yeah.
Mid-career, we underwrote
a leveraged buyout deal
for a billion seven,
a very well-known
consumer brand.
They insisted we pre-fund it
and so we did.
Then we found out about three
weeks later, after we'd sold it,
total fraud.
That was my firm's money.
They could absorb it. This one
really troubles me more
because this one, it's us,
right? It's our investors.
-Yeah.
-JOHN: There's
the people side of it too.
There's a huge social aspect,
community aspect to this
that really impacts the folks
in the town or community
and the players, you know?
It's it's a lot to think
about from that perspective.
When it comes down to it,
the last real reality show
is live sport, right,
and we can't control that.
-In the end, what happens?
-It's not in our hands.
It's what happens, right?
We keep moving forward
one step after another.
-We started this journey with
a lot of faith, right?
-Yeah.
We keep coming with that same
faith that whatever it is,
it will work out.
You know, in my heart,
I feel like we've got this one.
-How are you doing?
-OK.
(SHE LAUGHS)
I appreciate everything,
even if we go down.
And while that's
not gonna happen,
we're staying in this league
for a long time.
Three points today. Sorry?
It's got to be three.
Three points, right?
Yeah. Let's go. Good job, guys.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
(LAUGHS) Alan,
you've got us all sucked in.
I was gonna say,
that's pretty high praise.
-No pressure, Alan.
-None at all.
I don't feel it anyway,
so don't worry.
I can tell, right?
Just another day at the office.
(SIGHS)
ALAN: 'It's just a huge weight
which people will probably
never understand.
And I can feel it
when it's creeping in.
Anxiety and fear and worry,
wanting to be alone
and crawl under a rock
or something just to make the,
you know, the fear go away.'
-OK.
-Alright?
Yeah. All good?
-How are you?
-Nervous.
Aren't we all?
That's what makes it fun.
(CROWD CHANT) Come on, Burnley!
Come on, Burnley!
Come on, Burnley!
Come on, Burnley!
COMMENTATOR: 'The tension
palpable around Turf Moor.
A packed house
who know that Burnley
must better or equal
a Leeds result,
or else they face the drop.'
(DREAMLIKE CHANTING)
'There's a VAR check
in progress.
Now, Newcastle have got
a penalty here.
Oh, that's slick.
Newcastle double their lead.'
Leeds are winning one-nil.
-(CROWD ROARS)
-'Cornet pulls one back.
Now then, just a little
over ten minutes to go
for Burnley to
rescue themselves.
The crowd have heard something,
haven't they?
Brentford are level.
Brentford one, Leeds one.
Now, if Burnley score again,
Leeds United will be relegated
and Burnley would stay up.'
(CROWD ROARS)
'And the full-time whistle goes.
Burnley one, Newcastle two.
And with that,
Burnley are relegated
from the Premier League.'
(LAUGHS)
(INHALES DEEPLY)
Oh.
And in some ways, there's
some good that can come
from this, right?
Yeah.
I mean, without being too,
sort of, dramatic about it,
-it's your club now. Yeah.
-Yeah.
You manage a new team.
Get back in on our own merits.
-Yeah.
-And we're not on anyone
else's coattails anymore.
We're gonna do this our way.
-I was thinking the same thing.
-Yeah.
(LAUGHS)
REPORTER: 'Should friendly fans
really press the panic button?'
'If you're a Burnley fan,
you should be looking
in between the cracks.
These guys are not
white knights of Burnley.
This is an American leverage
purchase, right,
which has real jeopardy
attached to it.
Before they bought
that football club,
they had 42 million quid
in the bank.
They had a category one academy,
they had Sean Dyche
and Premier League football.
Now there are £102 million
in debt.
The academy's been downgraded.
They've got to pay
a £65m loan back.
They've got no permanent boss
and they're in the Championship.
These guys have got
a wake-up call coming.'
FAN: 'Flabbergasted again.
Just absolutely shocked.'
FAN: 'Put us in a load of debt.
This isn't how
Burnley do business.'
'This is not a game now, Pace.
This is not a game.
There's media people saying
we're gonna end up in League One
at this time next year.'
'I don't think these
Americans understand Burnley.'
There's a lot of comments
all over social media.
"Pace out", "Yankee rat".
Yeah, lots of lots of
things about being American.
It truly has been the most
stressful period
in our entire marriage.
'He's always had
stressful positions
in the work that he's done.
But this is above and beyond,'
to the point that
I actually have asked
several times, is this worth it?
ALAN: 'If it wasn't for
our ability to come here,
reflect, and also seek
inspiration, I'd be lost.
We believe that we have
a saviour that came'
to atone for our sins
and for the errors that
we make here on this Earth.
'The hurdles that we have to
overcome is aligning our will
with our Heavenly
Father's will.'
I changed my prayers.
'And I said, OK,
if we're not meant to be
in the Premier League, help me
to understand where we go.'
ALAN: Yes, I did.
That's a bigger conversation.
OK. She's wants
to talk about all
-Right.
-So noon on Thursday, but
we'll go through more stuff.
Let's Yeah.
-Is there just hot water?
-There is. It's in a cup.
-Thank you.
-It's good to see you, Alan.
-It's nice to be here.
-I haven't seen you
for a while.
Been working on a few things,
the new manager, and
At least we know it's a he.
That's a big clue!
-(SHE LAUGHS)
-OK.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUSE)
So thank you, first and
foremost, for getting together.
I know there's
a lot of disappointment,
both in our fan base and
internally with what
happened on Sunday.
OK?
We, all collectively in here,
can't control
what happens out there.
It's the most frustrating part
of whatever you wanna do
around sport, is you don't
get to control what happens.
But it can't be that we
get into the doldrums of,
oh, my goodness, we just went
down, this is it, this is over.
We have to react to it.
So really, what
all starts now is how do
we react to what's happened?
OK?
Our priority right
at the moment has to be
on getting the team back
to the Premier League.
You know, it's not lost
on social media
and on everybody else
that our team has aged.
And we need to refresh. And I'm
looking forward to that change.
I can promise you,
we're not going anywhere.
We've got a long journey
still ahead of us.
Thank you.
Oh, I did prom I did
promise I will answer questions.
Yes, go ahead.
We're close. OK.
Yeah, that'sthat's as best
we're gonna get for right now
without giving you who.
'I've met with and spoken to
a number of individuals.
I've kind of bucketed
the overall conversations
into three categories
in regards to
kind of what they
could bring to us.
We're down to probably
three individuals.'
So your tone's changed
a little bit
after being in Belgium
a couple of times.
Like after, I mean, we spent
a lot of time with a few others.
I thought we were kind of
going a different direction.
I don't know. It just
It's so different from
the others that we've been
talking to, you know.
Dynamic.
-Creative.
-Mm-hmm.
Thoughtful. Um
I won't It's not visionary,
but it's evolutionary.
You know, willing to,
like, change.
-I was blown away.
-Really?
I was supposed to
catch the train back,
and I missed four trains, so
So something good
was going on, right?
I think he took on board
the vision of
what we're trying to do and how
we're trying to accomplish it.
But I would say it became
a combined vision very,
very quickly
as to how my thinking evolved
just in talking with him.
We haven't met
someone like this.
Does he fit with us? You think
he's gonna gel with us?
I mean, can he Can he see
and communicate
like we need to
I mean, are we gonna be
able to be close to him?
Yes, I do think he fits with us.
-I think he probably asked
the same question of us.
-The other way around.
On the other way around
and wondering, you know, look,
are these just a bunch of
weirdos that have come to
come into English football?
The judgement's still
out on that, right?
Yeah, yeah. Probably
more than we would like.
I mean, there's
no question about
his reputation on the pitch,
right? So he comes
strong leadership, strong
work ethic. He's a legend.
But, you know, I think
there's still some
thoughtfulness and prayer
that has to go into it.
But I'm
I'm leaning at this
this is what we're
supposed to do.
It feels right.
(CAMERA SHUTTERS CLICK)
MAN: Good afternoon.
-Good afternoon. How you doing?
-Welcome to Burnley.
Thank you.
-Nice to see you.
-Nice to see you.
REPORTER:
'Burnley have a new manager,
and that man is Vincent Kompany,
the former Manchester City
captain, a title winner
as a player.'
'Would this be a brave move?
A bold move?'
-'A bit of both, I imagine.'
-'Yeah.'
'It's certainly
a left-field move, isn't it?'
-'I think it's risky, me.'
-'Do you?'
'You're bringing in a manager
with no Premier League
experience.'
'It's fair to say, he didn't
pull up trees at Anderlecht
when he was over in Belgium.'
Jeff, I can walk but I
don't know where I'm going.
Sorry, mate. Sorry.
Don't worry about it.
We can do it in the canteen.
-It's more relaxed.
-Don't worry.
Just everybody there with
a coffee. I'll go to
the office first.
Straight on. Yeah.
How are you doing, Mike? Good?
-Good to see you. Are
the other fellas alright?
-Yeah, yeah.
-Yeah, welcome, man.
-Thank you, thank you.
-You made it.
-It's good to be here.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
Right, I think I've seen
everyone, so
First and foremost, you know,
I wanted to say how proud I am,
how happy I am to be part of
this place, to get the chance,
to get the privilege to,
you know, work with you guys.
The main thing I wanted to say
is when you come into
this place,
you can straight away feel
that there is something,
there is something special here.
There is a part of me that says
I wanna protect this
as much as I can.
But the ambitious part of me
as well says I wanna improve it.
And we'll give you a lot
more information than
other teams and other clubs
have got to deal with.
That's who we are. That's what
we want to bring to this club.
Just use it. Use it to become
better. Use it to improve.
Success is not just winning
trophies, you know?
Success is overachieving
on the resources you have.
So, we'll go
straight into business.
We'll go into the meeting room,
I'll explain to you
what we'll do in training.
We take a group
outside on the pitch,
group one and two
switch for tomorrow.
And then we're on a normal
schedule from Thursday onwards.
Yes, lads? Let's go.
VINCENT: 'I've been used to
being around young players.'
That was the nature of my job
when I was in Anderlecht,
and now I'm finding a group
that's a bit more experienced.
-(WHISTLE BLOWS)
-Guys, get in four groups.
Get your position
and you stay
VINCENT: 'I'm looking
for good people.'
-(WHISTLE BLOWS)
-Let's go!
'When you have good people,
then that is a start
to having a good team,
and then the rest
comes after that.'
Go, go, go, go! Go, go!
So hard facts. With relegation,
we're gonna get
a Championship payment.
So that's not going to be
a lot of money.
So it's important to start
the season with a decent
amount of cash such
that we're liquid and healthy
and able to fund
the rest of our season.
So July, August
will be important from
a trading perspective
to make sure we support
the cash levels we've got,
but maybe some player tradings.
ALAN: It'd just be
such a shame to have
so much of what we've
done in the last 18 months
of bringing in people
to just turn around
and actually have to redo it.
So that's why you're the
chairman. It's a hard decision.
Well, let's see. I think
the hard decision comes when
Vince comes in and says,
this is what we have to have.
Do you think he's gonna
want to keep most of the guys
or will he want a makeover
We don't know him well
enough yet.
I mean, from the stuff
that we've gone through,
I think it was very clear
that we needed
to make some significant change.
The idea right now is
to come up with obviously
a lot more goal threat
upfront than we've had
because we're playing
a different style of football.
What's it gonna cost
in the Championship?
-It's probably
-Five? Ten?
Somewhere between there. Yeah,
probably eight to ten maybe.
Wow. That's a big number
for us now, right?
From what you just said,
I don't know that we can do it.
If you wanna refresh the squad
and we wanna start from
a position of cash strength,
I'd say you've
got to raise that
from probably the transfers.
The real question is gonna be
what's this new team
gonna look like?
I I have no idea.
(LAUGHS)
It's gonna be cheaper,
I guess, right?
(LAUGHS)
BORIS JOHNSON ON TV: 'Thank you
very much for coming in today.
Early today, Sue Gray
published her final report
which I commissioned to get
to the bottom of things
and to set the record straight.
She's identified a number
of failings,
some official,
some political'
ALAN: Sound OK? Can you hear us
OK? Or do we sound too far away?
OK. All thumbs up. So we're
gonna go ahead and get started.
Sorry about this moving around
a little bit.
We felt that it was
important to take a dive
into the changes
in the financials.
The first thing I wanna really
address is just what happens
if we're relegated.
If you finish 17th,
you get 102 million
from the League.
If you're relegated,
your parachute payment
is 46.5 million,
so you lose
56 million of revenue,
no matter what, at a minimum.
I wanna talk about debt now,
at January 2022.
So at the beginning of this
year, we still had 65 million.
It's an interest-only loan
so long as you're not relegated.
So what are we
gonna do about that?
We've sold 16 million dollars'
worth of players.
On top of that, we no longer
have to pay their salaries.
These are typically our highest
paid guys. On the coaching side,
we've also made a serious
move in rotating out.
But we do have legacy costs
for Sean and his team.
When all is said and done,
that leaves us
basically flat with cash.
ALAN: So with that, this is the
first time for all of you to get
to meet Vince in person.
We'll let, you know,
Vince walk us through
how the squad's developing,
how he thinks about it.
Yeah, first and foremost,
we are pleased to meet
most of you for the first time.
If I can simplify everything,
it's really just about
one thing.
It's the most valuable
product that we have,
it's what happens
on the football pitch.
It's 90 minutes once a week,
twice a week,
and everything has to be
culminating towards that.
It's the absolute priority
and it's the only priority.
Basically, we need to fill
the team with tradable assets.
That's the name of the game.
You can do as much as you want
around the club
to generate revenue.
Nothing will generate
anywhere close
except for the TV money
from the Premier League.
But every year
in the Championship,
the only way to generate
revenue is to sell players,
like substantially.
But the fine margin between
having a very healthy
squad financially and a squad
who's able to perform,
that's, I think, where it
comes in a little bit my
It's the passion that I have.
So I have a passion for
performance and winning games.
I wake up every morning
with only one idea,
it's how we can
win on the weekend.
But as well, I don't mind
winning in the long run.
'I just wanted to hear you say
exactly what you've said,
-which is "I'm here to win".'
-No worries about that.
Turnover is really dangerous
in this business
because it makes or breaks you.
It's an opportunity that I saw,
which is the reason why
I went to Burnley as well,
because I saw it as an
opportunity, because for me
to impose my style
of football and my ideas,
it's much easier with
a high turnover of players
than with a low
turnover of players.
But I'll take a bullet,
it's not a problem,
but it's just that the whole
ship needs to stay calm.
That's so important,
and we have a plan
and if something goes wrong,
we just need to make sure we
understand why it's gone wrong
and we adapt and we improve.
Yeah?
-Right, thank you.
-Thanks, guys.
Thank you, guys.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
-Hi, lads. Are you OK?
-What's the brief?
What's the aim? What's
the chairman said to you
that you need to be achieving?
The ambition is always
as you come down to go back up.
You've only got
five weeks, though.
How difficult is it to blend
a squad together in five weeks?
I think that's the hardest part.
'The Championship, it's brutal.
It's relentless.'
It's the most difficult league
in the world to get out of.
VINCENT: 'Success,
that's the very end of it.
The beginning is hard work.'
(WHISTLE BLOWS)
Come on, go again!
'We're looking at him,
thinking, I need to up my level
because they're
watching everything.
VINCENT: Control
the tempo of the ball.
-When you get the chance
to break, break.
-Let's go!
'The standards that
the gaffer sets are so high.'
He demands so much from us.
Everything is depending
on your angles.
'The detail he goes into'
in meetings and on the pitch
is unbelievable.
Make sure you split them.
'I'm not sure he sleeps.
I really ain't.'
The hours he works, that's
who he is. He's different.
-Let's go, let's go!
-(WHISTLE BLOWS)
Here we go.
'The first week we were here,
I asked him,'
do you want us to keep
all the same traditions
and all the same stuff
as the last group we had?
I think it was keen to keep
a lot of the same values we had.
So, it was my birthday, it was,
like, the first week here
and I bought in four trays
of Krispy Kreme doughnuts
(LAUGHS) ..and
put them in the kitchen.
And, like,
I didn't see 'em all day.
And I was like,
where's these doughnuts?
The nutritionist was like,
you can't have doughnuts.
The manager called a meeting.
He said you shouldn't be eating
doughnuts at training ground.
So I gave them all to the staff.
But, yeah, I was a bit
embarrassed at the time.
Try and break the line
with your pass.
VINCENT: 'I'm really fixated on
the perfection side of things.
Almost the artistic side.
I want my team to
play in a certain way.
I want creative players
who feel free and enjoy the game
and score. Create chances.
To be more disciplined,
faster, more aggressive.'
If you get a chance to score,
you score. Here we go.
'Let's be honest, we're going
to have some tough times ahead.'
It's not going to be just
a straight path to success.
'It's not rocket science.
The hardest part about football
is just keeping people calm.'
I'll remind you of that.
(CROWD CHEERS)
-You're looking smart today.
-And you.
-Are you alright?
-Yes, alright.
REPORTER: 'It's been a busy
summer for Vincent Kompany.
The former Manchester City
captain has brought in
nine players so far.
It's a new dawn.
He'll be hoping
these fresh faces
can take Burnley straight back
into the Premier League.'
(PHONE LINE RINGS)
-'Hi, Alan.'
-Hi, Vince. How are you?
'Yeah, I'm fine. How you doing?'
I'm doing OK.
We're about to have a ceremony
here in just a little bit,
but I wanted to give you
a shout real quick before
you guys get started,
so I know we both have
big days today.
(LAUGHS)
'Yeah, Yeah.
Oh, yeah. Course.
You've got that wedding.'
-(LAUGHS)
-'Yeah, I was like,
I was thinking, yeah,
I think the ceremony,
-the pre-match ceremony. Yeah.'
-(LAUGHS)
'But if it's a wedding,
no, you're right.
I think yours
is more important.'
Well, yours is still
very important to us.
Don't get this wrong.
-How are you feeling?
-'Good, good, good, good.
Prepared for sure. And
and then the only thing
you don't control is,
you know, first time
in the Championship,
you know, how your players
are going to react.
-But that'spart of the game.'
-Yeah. Well, look,
it all starts here.
So this is the beginning.
So very much looking forward
to seeing how it goes.
But we're in this one together
and we know you got it.
-So
-'Thank you. Appreciate it.'
MAN: Throughout this audience,
people come from far and wide
to be here today, and, uh,
it's a glorious venue
and a wonderful opportunity
to be with you on this
very special day.
(THUNDER RUMBLES)
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
Come on, boys. Come on!
COMMENTATOR:
'It's a new era, a new dawn.
We're all fascinated
to see how they'll play
under Vincent Kompany.'
Go on, Burnley!
(CROWD CHANTS) Come on, Burnley!
Come on, Burnley!
(CROWD GASPS)
(SHOUTING)
COMMENTATOR:
'Maatsen with the finish! Oh!'
-(CROWD ROARS)
-'That's a sublime move!
Burnley lead.
It'll be Twine
with the free kick.
Oh, he's struck the post. Oh!'
And we almost scored again.
(CROWD CHANTS)
-(WHISTLE BLOWS)
-Yeah!
'A huge statement from Burnley
and from Vincent Kompany
and his first game in charge.
After relegation, that is a big
result on the opening day.'
Yes, come on! Yeah!
Whatwhat a night.
Vincent, congratulations.
This could be a dream start.
-Clean sheet. You must be happy.
-Yeah, I couldn't have
asked for more.
Come on!
VINCENT: 'We were hungry.
We werewe were motivated.
Aggressive.
We controlled every
aspect of the game.'
PUNDIT: You've spoken about not
losing the positive elements
of Burnley over the years
and keeping that togetherness
and how important
that's gonna be for you
for the rest of the season.
That's one thing that this club
has got more than anything.
It's good people behind
the scenes and a team
that's really used
to putting the hard work.
'We're not there,
don't get me wrong.
But it's one step
in the right direction
showing what we could do.'
(CROWD ROARS)
'I do not want to freak out
the rest of the organisation.'
We may or may not get out
of the Championship this year.
Open your mouth! Your team's
getting battered
and we're saying nothing!
Don't fuck about!
'Transfer deadline day.'
I finished up the numbers.
Way over.
Our position is clear.
The deal is off.
The stress level here is unlike
anything that I've ever done.
Why is he allowed to go
through the back of me?
VINCENT:
'We've got to get better.'
(END TITLES THEME)
