6 YEARS LATER
[unlocking door]
[light switch clicks]
[intriguing music playing]
[buzzing]
[intriguing music continues]
[woman over headphones] Prayer number 14.
[panting]
[man over headphones]
I am light. I am love.
I am health.
I am Christ. God looks after you.
God listens to you.
Don't live in the past.
Don't dream about the future.
Focus your mind on the present.
I am light. I am love.
I am health.
I am Christ.
[panting]
[man over headphones]
We are our own thoughts.
We become what we think.
- Morning, Sergio. I was looking for you.
- I am light. I am love.
- I am health.
- [director] I've got good news.
The judge has just issued
your release order.
[panting]
Nine months off your sentence.
You can't complain.
[inhales]
You should gather your things.
You'll be leaving soon. Your lawyer is
[atmospheric music playing]
[woman] Thanks.
Sergio, I'm sorry.
I would've liked
to have told you myself, like always.
But it looks like someone beat me to it.
Your probation period starts now.
The judge issued the release order early
thanks to an opportunity
at the greenhouse.
He thinks it'll help you rejoin society.
Well, your tutor,
his name is Natanael Torroja,
he'll be reaching out to you shortly
on this cell phone.
[rumpling envelope]
[woman] You can only receive calls.
You'll go back to your parents' house.
It's yours now.
You inherited it in spite of
everything.
You need to sign off on your release.
That's okay, isn't it?
Did you understand everything I just said?
Okay.
Considering the special condition
of the inmate,
this silence will be interpreted
as agreement.
We've done it before, right?
So that's it.
Sign here.
RELEASE PERMI
[woman] All righty, then.
There's only one more thing we need to do.
ANKLE MONITOR
[atmospheric music playing]
ACCESS CONTROL
[subway rails squealing]
[PA system tone]
[PA] Now approaching the station.
Connect here for train and tram services.
[train brakes hiss]
[inaudible]
[tense music playing]
[tense music continues]
[door system beeping]
[unsettling music playing]
[phones ringing]
NOA'S GRADUATION
SERGIO'S FAMILY
[woman 1] He's already here.
Monday, April 16th, 2022.
The subject goes back to the family home.
We begin the program
of daily monitoring and behavior analysis.
Silence is Sergio Ciscar's way
of dominating us.
We might think he does it
to avoid being attacked, but no.
He does it
so that we all keep an eye on him.
He's a malignant narcissist.
If he knew we were watching him now,
he would enjoy it.
[machinery beeping]
Our job is to determine
his current psychological state
and his potential level of threat.
Sergio is extremely intelligent.
He has an IQ of 154.
His mother, Blanca Polo,
was a psychiatrist.
As soon as she realized
her son's immense capability,
she focused on his education.
FAMILY PHOTOS
Something went wrong almost immediately.
MULTIPLE SKULL FRACTURES
[woman 1] Sergio alternated
academic success
with a progressive
emotional detachment from his family.
He became the Balcony Killer
six years ago.
Since then, he's been silent.
Since his parents' death,
he hasn't spoken once.
Not in the trial,
not with his tutors, not with anyone.
[floor creaking softly]
[clock ticking]
The idea is to make Sergio face the past.
And assess his self-control.
In order to do that,
we've installed cameras
in every room in the house.
[tense music playing]
[clock ticking]
[woman 1] And in every entrance
to the building.
In the hallway.
In the doorway.
And in the elevators.
We also have access to all
the traffic cameras throughout the city.
And finally, in order
to carry out street monitoring,
we'll use button cameras.
He almost got you in the subway.
We've also installed
a heart rate monitor in the ankle device
that Sergio is currently wearing.
[click]
[beeping]
[beeping faster]
[beeping continues]
[whispering] His little sister's bedroom.
[heartbeat pounding]
She was the only person
that he really cared about.
After the crime,
he couldn't get in touch with her.
He tried to, through his lawyer but
[man 1] Yeah, I know the case.
Yeah, you think so?
[beeping continues]
- [click]
- [beeping stops]
Do you know Sergio?
Because I've been observing him for years
and I wouldn't be able to make
a complete psychological profile.
Look at this.
Reconstruction
of the alleged double homicide
that took place
the night of March 23rd, 2016.
The physical and visibility conditions
of the night of the crime
are reproduced
according to the police report.
The procedure is performed
in the presence of the son of the victims,
the accused, Sergio Ciscar.
Are you ready?
That night you got home
around twelve o'clock, correct?
Your parents were asleep.
We know from the traces of blood that you
and your mother met in the office.
Was your mother angry
because you were late?
Did the argument start right away?
He really hasn't spoken in six years?
He talks with who he wants, when he wants.
Which wasn't me.
It was my first professional job.
I helped the forensic examiner
create a psychological profile of Sergio.
[man 2] Sergio, we need to know
what happened. This isn't a game.
[man 3] Don't harass the suspect.
It's his right to cooperate or not.
That Aguirre?
I thought another judge was on the case.
[Aguirre] Sergio
Aguirre would kill for a famous case.
[Aguirre] we're all here to help you.
Even the attorney,
as difficult as that is to believe.
Did your parents do something to you?
Did they abuse you?
Sorry to interrupt
this therapy session, Your Honor,
but we're here to do
a reconstruction of the crime.
If that's all right with both of you.
[scoffs]
- You have to pity him.
- [scoffs]
- [Aguirre] Proceed.
- [attorney] Right.
According to data collected
in the investigation,
this is the most likely
sequence of events.
Mother and son are face to face
with the table in between them
when at one point in the conversation,
Sergio grabs the box cutter.
He attacks her directly.
She raises her hands to defend herself,
and Sergio makes the first cut
at the top of her left wrist.
Next, there is a struggle
in front of the wardrobe
[clicks]
after which, the mother retreats
until she reaches the door
and supports herself with her left hand.
She then runs to try to reach the exit.
But Sergio catches up with her
and throws her against the furniture
making her fall.
From there, she then proceeds
to crawl into the living room,
leaving traces of blood
in various locations,
on the floor and on the furniture.
The assailant follows her,
intending to attack her once more,
but he slips on his mother's blood.
From the floor,
he takes several stabs at her,
causing deep cuts
to her ankles and tendons.
- She continues to retreat
- [woman 2] Vicious.
and tries to reach the balcony
to escape the attacks.
But Sergio stands back up
[clattering]
advances toward her,
attacks her again.
She is wounded, and she falls.
[man 1] Has Sergio confirmed this version?
[woman 1] No, never.
The prosecutor's version
was officially accepted
because of his silence.
[tense music builds]
And the father?
He went to the balcony
when he heard all the noise.
Sergio pushed him as well.
It was recorded by a CCTV camera.
[woman 2] Holy shit.
[gasping]
- [exhales]
- [phone buzzing]
[buzzing]
[buzzing]
[buzzing]
Tell him I'm busy.
Sure.
Hi, Beñat, it's Greta.
Ana's very busy right now. She can't talk.
[door closes]
We've got a visitor.
[Ana] Morning.
Sub-Inspector Cabrera, right?
Sub-Commissioner.
- Ana Dussuel.
- Dussuel.
[Cabrera] So, where's my desk?
[Ana] Your desk? Why would you need one?
[Cabrera] This will do. [sighs]
I can see everything from here.
I already committed
to send you in-depth reports every week
and to arrange online meetings.
Yeah, I imagine you had to make
a lot of commitments to get all this.
Why are you here?
I'm just here to
ensure the security of you
and your mad science project here.
Because everyone is watching him, but
someone should be watching you.
[scoffs softly]
[suspenseful music playing]
[exhales]
[tense music playing]
- [Greta] Is that an ampoule?
- [Ana] Mm.
[tense music continues]
[continues slamming on desk]
[tranquil music playing]
[intercom ringing]
[beep]
He already has visitors?
[intercom beeps]
[man] Hello.
Hey, you're here, congratulations.
Come, God waits for no one.
- [Sergio] I'm coming.
- [man] Sorry, do you have a white shirt?
- Yes.
- [man] Bring it.
Ah, so he does speak.
Who's the lucky guy?
His name's Natanael.
He's an evangelical priest.
He's the tutor that was
assigned by the judge.
He specializes in ex-convicts,
drug addicts,
victims of human trafficking
[Cabrera] Psychopaths,
junkies, prostitutes
There's no money in that?
[door creaking]
It's good to see you. Huh?
It finally happened.
See?
Keep it up. Glory to God.
Glory be.
Are you nervous?
[man] Mm.
God doesn't hurt.
Come on, come on, let's go.
[engine starts]
[intriguing music playing]
[intriguing music continues]
[mechanical chirring]
[bell ringing]
[pulls brake]
[intriguing music continues]
Put the deck feed up on screen four.
[whirring]
Ah!
I have something for you.
So you'll never be alone.
- [rips envelope open]
- [metal clinking]
You like it?
- Yeah.
- Really?
[chuckles proudly]
That's for you too.
- For me?
- Mm.
What are they saying?
If it were up to me, I would have to go
for the chain and the cross.
With those, you can talk
to God as often as you like.
And you'll never have any problems
with the connection or the signal.
[Sergio chuckles softly]
We're almost there.
- [bell ringing]
- [engine starts]
[exhales]
[honks horn]
[whispers] Come on, come on, come on.
[honks horn loudly]
- [horns honking]
- Shit! You gotta be fucking kidding me.
[Ana clicks tongue then exhales]
Ana.
Don't worry. We
have cameras all over the greenhouse.
We'll get visuals soon,
it's not important.
It's very important.
We can't lose sight of him
for even one second.
Not one.
[Greta sighs]
["All Gone" by Scarlett
playing over store speakers]
[phone chimes]
UNKNOWN NUMBER
IT'S SERGIO, I'M OUT. SHALL WE MEET AT 4?
[tense music playing]
[tense music continues]
Greta. The audio access you wanted.
[Greta] Thanks.
[tense music continues]
[Natanael] Good morning, my angel!
[Natanael chuckles]
[computer beeps]
- Oh my God, so handsome!
- Silvia, my wife.
[Silvia] God bless you.
- Come on, let him go freshen up a bit.
- Sure.
You're really going to love the church.
There'll be a Mass
after everyone finishes work today.
- Mm-hmm.
- You did bring a shirt?
A white one, yes, just like God likes it.
Let's go. Let me iron it for you.
[Natanael] Go on. Welcome.
REBORN IN CHRIST ASSOCIATION
Hey.
[birds chirping]
What?
- Mm?
- [man] I don't like him.
Doesn't matter what he's done.
What matters is
that he has God in his heart.
- I still don't like him.
- Yeah.
I have to admit that I also had my doubts
when I started visiting with him.
But he's got a good heart.
Mm?
Just like yours.
Give him time, okay?
All right, back to work.
[whispering] Sergio, Sergio.
What are you doing in there?
In order to celebrate God,
first we have to be worthy of his grace.
And we believe that the best gift
we can give him is our hard work.
Take off the cap and the cross.
You can leave them there for now.
Gorka will tell you what to do.
[Natanael] How is
everything back there, good?
I'm glad. Guillén, come with me.
God will never forgive you
for killing your own mother.
[Natanael] Gorka!
Do not offend our Lord.
I don't want violence here at all!
Work in peace!
And that goes for all of you.
Continue.
[suspenseful music playing]
HELP CENTER
Boo!
[chuckles]
Mm.
Listen to this plan.
I'll swap your bland lentils at your place
for a round of tacos
at the Mexican spot in the square. Huh?
- Who could say no to that, huh?
- No, I can't.
Why?
It's Leire's birthday
and we're getting drinks right now.
I got out of work early for you.
I'm going home
to get some money before we go out.
But we'll go this weekend.
You're sure? That you can't?
I already have a reservation, Marta.
Saturday, we'll go get those tacos.
[intriguing music playing]
Hi, Dad.
[sports match playing over TV]
[intriguing music continues]
[father] There's food for you
in the microwave.
I already ate! Thank you!
JESUS LOVES YOU
[clicks tongue]
Where you going? It's being fumigated.
I'll tell him.
[ominous music playing]
FUMIGATED AREA
[ominous sting]
[clang]
[ominous music continues]
[exhales]
[scraping]
[breathing heavily]
[exhales sharply]
- [bang]
- [gasps]
[gas hissing]
[ominous music continues]
[coughs]
[gasping]
[coughing]
[loud clang]
[gasps]
[coughing]
[coughs]
[ominous music continues]
[gasps and coughs]
[gasping]
[gas hissing]
[ominous music continues]
[gas hissing]
[Greta] It's one
of the greenhouse workers.
Less than 24 hours
and already back to his old ways.
We don't know what happened.
We don't know if Sergio
is involved in the accident.
[scoffs] The accident?
All those people
are thinking the same thing I am.
That the Balcony Killer has a new victim.
I'm sorry, but it doesn't look
like anyone died.
Not yet.
[suspenseful music playing]
[suspenseful music continues]
[car approaching]
I'll talk to some friends
at the police station
and that jerk at the greenhouse.
In the meantime,
let's try not to have any more accidents.
Thank you.
[Ana sighs]
[gentle music playing]
Hello.
Who's that girl?
No idea. Been there a while.
For you.
What is that?
What's in her hand?
[Ana] Can't we enlarge the image?
[man] It wouldn't do any good.
The resolution's not good enough.
Follow her.
[tense music playing]
IT'S SERGIO
[Greta] Maybe that priest Natanael
gave him a different phone.
It doesn't matter.
What matters is
finding out who he's texting.
[suspenseful music playing]
[click]
[camera shutter clicks]
[clicks]
[clicks]
[Greta] Her name is Marta. She's 22.
Works at Primark and she's just rented
a flat to move in with her boyfriend.
And her relationship to Sergio?
[Greta] She's some kind of superfan.
Most people just wrote him letters
and that was it.
But she visited him
in the detention center more than once.
She even got a private visit.
Did they have sex?
[Greta] I guess so.
[Ana] When was that?
[Greta] Six months ago.
I don't think her boyfriend knows.
And where did you get
all this information?
I assume it's confidential.
I have some contacts
in the juvenile court.
- [Ana] We need her number.
- [knocking]
[Ana] Yeah.
We know what phone number he was texting,
and you're not gonna believe it.
The actual owner isn't important, but
that phone number belonged to his sister.
- To Noa?
- [man] Yes.
And this girl had it?
[man] Sergio lost touch
with his sister after the murders.
How did she get that number?
[man] Now that, I don't know.
Good work on this. Thank you.
[door opens]
[door closes]
[techno music playing over speakers]
I only have the smaller size in blue.
Do you like that one?
I don't know.
Well, you look amazing.
If your boyfriend saw you
wearing this dress, what would he say?
[Marta laughs]
He'd say, "Take it off."
But he's an animal.
And if Sergio saw you?
[tense music playing]
Sergio Ciscar. You met him, right?
Come in.
How is this legal?
[Ana] We got a permit from a judge.
But what really matters
is whether it's necessary.
I think it is,
especially for Sergio.
[tense music continues]
[water running in shower]
[Ana] Feelings of attraction to criminals,
murderers, abusers, they have a name.
It's called hybristophilia.
Nobody really knows why some people
have an attraction to criminals.
You're not alone.
Almost every human being feels
some sort of attraction to the forbidden.
But not everyone can fall in love
with someone like him.
I'm in love with my boyfriend Eneko.
With Sergio, it's
- Well
- [Ana] I know what it is.
It's the attraction
to a criminal who's incarcerated.
It's called passive hybristophilia.
The situation is under control
because it's Platonic.
But everything changes once he's free.
Right?
[scoffs]
[Marta] I want to get back
to my boyfriend.
And my life.
- But it's true, I'd like to help Sergio.
- I know you do.
And if you help me,
you can do both those things.
I need you to keep meeting Sergio.
Your relationship is very special.
It's possible you're the only person
that he can open up to.
And that would help us know
what's going on inside his head.
Marta, help me help Sergio.
You're the boss
and you took the first watch?
At least you're hardworking.
Marta.
I'm sorry, but I think
you'd better go. Come on.
Please, just think about
what I told you, okay?
She's the only person
who can get intimate with Sergio.
[scoffs]
And you want to collaborate?
Uh you want me to call the judge or what?
If they cancel this program,
I believe we'll all come to regret it,
knowing what Sergio could do one day.
Or maybe we should all
be regretting it already.
[suspenseful music playing]
[Cabrera] Ana.
Marta
[Cabrera exhales]
[suspenseful music continues]
Where are you going, you idiot?
[Cabrera] What if she tells Sergio?
[suspenseful music continues]
[Cabrera sighs]
[elevator dings]
[suspenseful music continues]
[breathing shakily]
[suspenseful music builds]
[doorbell rings]
[sighs]
You know, if he throws her
off the balcony, it'll be on you.
[footsteps approaching]
[Sergio unlocking door]
[brooding music plays]
Hello.
[tense music builds]
[music fades]
[inaudible]
