[Batsheva] So, Mom, when we first
got married, Ben and I had come to you,
we didn't exactly know
how things worked in the bedroom
You know, we came from a place
where sex is so taboo,
and nobody talks about it
My bridal teacher
wouldn't even say the word "sex,"
like, really knew nothing, and you gave us
some really helpful advice
So, now we've been married
for seven years
Ooh, I love this conversation
We don't wanna know personally

You sure you don't want me to tell you
about really great sexual experiences?
I love you, but that's a little too gory
for your daughter and son-in-law

[announcer] Miss Julia Haart!
My name is Julia Haart,
and I am the CEO of Elite World Group,
the largest conglomerate
of modeling agencies in the world
Pretty much every major model,
Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford,
you name them,
has come through Elite World
Ooh, love of my life!
[Julia] I'm married to an amazing man
I have four incredible children
Three of them live here in Manhattan,
and my little one, Aron,
we share custody, my ex-husband and I
I know I have oysters on the table
There's also kosher things coming
[Silvio] Next time, with bacon
- Let's do one step at a time
- Oh, my God!
[Julia] It's really hard to imagine
that just a few years ago,
I was living in an extreme
ultra-Orthodox Jewish community,
yeshivishe heimishe,
from my entire life
until the time I was 40
There are a lot of Jews
who live perfectly regular lives
It has nothing to do
with Judaism or religion
This has to do with fundamentalism
I love being Jewish, but I do believe
whether it's Jewish fundamentalism,
Muslim fundamentalism,
Christian fundamentalism,
it is so dangerous
The women in our community
are second-class citizens
We only exist in relation to a man
A woman can't sing,
because a man might get attracted to her
You can't ride a bicycle,
because your knees might show
and some man
might have bad thoughts about you
The women in our community
were covered from head to toe,
and it was your mother's responsibility
to teach you modesty
Your entire purpose
is not to attract attention
Think about where we came from,
that we're sitting at this table
[Batsheva] Mm-hmm
Do you remember when I first took off
my wig? How, like, angry at me you were?
Yeah
[Julia] If any of your body parts
were uncovered,
there's a very special form of hell that
is reserved for both you and your mother
In this hell,
your mother would dip your clothes
in acid, put them on your body,
and so throughout the day,
your body would decompose from the acid
And then, the next morning,
it would start all over again
for thousands of years
or however many years hell lasts
When you learn this as a child,
and everyone around you believes it,
you believe it
I remember in school, I was taught
that men are better than women
[Julia] Yeah
[Miriam] Guys are just better than girls,
that's how it is
I think that mindset's crazy
We said it every morning from the time
you were a baby. What do you say?
"Thank you, God,
for not making me a woman."
Thank you very much
In our community,
a woman basically has one purpose,
to follow her husband
and to be a baby-making machine
A man can divorce a wife
for burning his food,
but a woman, even if she's being beaten,
cannot divorce her husband
Marriage was prison
I hated being married
But I had no education, I had
no way to support myself. How do I leave?
So I thought, okay, what is the one thing
you can do without a degree?
You can sell
It took me many years,
but I started to sell
life insurance and annuities
without my husband knowing about it
And I slowly, slowly started building
my little escape fund,
and I just packed up and left
No plan, wasn't organized
I just couldn't sit there
for another millisecond
Ben and I have been married
almost eight years
Well, I walked out two months
after you got married
- [Ben] Two days!
- [Julia] Two days
- We got married on a Wednesday
- We left Thursday
- And took off ten days later, Sunday
- [Julia] And then I took off
- [Ben] Right. Then you took off
- [Julia laughing]
[Julia] So when I left, Batsheva was
already married, she was living in Israel,
Shlomo was away in yeshiva,
so there was only Miriam and Aron at home
Miriam came and moved in with me,
and Aron was really little,
he was seven years old,
and so half the time he's with me
and half the time he's still in Monsey
I'm very lucky to have been married
to be married to Batsheva
- Not "have been," to be married
- [all laughing]
We're very much
on the same level religiously, and
[Shlomo] Are you guys?
[Ben] Very much,
on a lot of things we are,
and a big thing, you'll see
when you're in a relationship one day,
is that communication is basically,
arguably the most important thing
[Julia] Batsheva is my oldest daughter
She'd been brought up
in that world the longest,
so of course for her,
it was extremely difficult
Ben and I are at a different level
than you, and I think that's okay
Ben is my husband and best friend
He's a real estate agent in the city
We got married when we were 19 years old
Getting married that young is very common
Right after I got married, my mom decided
she no longer wanted
to be religious at all,
and that was really challenging for me
because I was brought up one way,
and she was basically saying,
"I don't believe
in any of that, I'm going."
I still live
a very religious Jewish lifestyle,
but I am obviously not where I used to be,
and I've found my own way in the religion
[Miriam] I was taught
"One way or the highway."
[Julia] Yeah. One way or the highway
But I think that's crazy. At the least
[Julia] My daughter Miriam
is very much like me in the sense that
we're both not religious at all
Somebody asked, like, what a lesbian was,
and my teacher said that doesn't exist
Means I'm not breaking any rules
Growing up in my community,
I really, really had a hard time
All I wanted to do was run around
and play sports and I couldn't as a woman
I was around constant sexism
I wasn't able
to explore my sexuality at all
So my mom took me
out of the community when I was 13,
so I'm very much in debt to her
and grateful for everything she's done
Let's toast
Julia's been doing so much
I'm in awe of you, my love

- [Miriam] To Ima!

Since the day I took over this company,
it's all about, "The talent is the voice."
When I left Monsey,
I was almost 43 years old,
and I needed to figure out
a way to make money
Ever since I can remember,
I've always loved fashion
So when I left my community,
the first thing I wanted to do
was start a fashion brand,
and I chose shoes
because even in my community,
even though I got flak,
I kept on saying, "Show me a law
that says I can't wear high-heeled shoes."
So my entire life, I've been wearing
high-heeled shoes because I'm tiny
But then what I realized is
I couldn't make shoes for women
that were uncomfortable
So I wanted to free all women
from suffering for beauty
So I started the shoe brand Julia Haart
In one year, I was being sold
in seven countries
And then La Perla bought my shoe brand
I became creative director
of the world's most premier
renowned lingerie brand
I did to clothing the same thing
that I had done to shoes,
is I made it comfortable
Why do we women suffer for beauty?
Because way back when,
some dude had some idea
of what a woman's shape should be
Women were wearing corsets
that literally broke their rib cages,
and made it
impossible for them to breathe
Sorry, that's where I came from,
I don't want anything to do with that
The idea that any woman should suffer
for anything was outrageous to me
So when I was first asked to become
CEO of Elite, we made a deal
Deal was, if I'm taking over,
I'm taking over
We're doing it my way
I want to change and modernize
the entire modeling industry
Our models are not treated like bodies
They are treated with respect
Rob, can you do the combination?
Yes!
If you fuck with Julia,
she will bulldoze you
If you stand in her way,
if you try to block her or her vision,
