Playing over two decades

'cause of my dedication to my work,
I think it's a huge part of the reason
why I'm still able to play at this level.

I dreamed about being
the best basketball player in the world,
as every other ten-year-old did.
Kobe was he was everything for me.
I just felt the connection.
I used to watch all his games
and highlights on YouTube,
and he really inspired me
to wanna go after and chase my dream.
I got to meet Kobe. Got his autograph.
You know, as a kid, going to school,
one day, we had to write a one-page essay
on what we wanted to be when we got older.
She got to me and I said, you know,
"My favorite player is Kobe Bryant.
I wanna be in the NBA."
She kinda laughed and was like,
"You need to be more realistic."
And I remember going home and crying
and telling my mom I was embarrassed.
And I'll never forget. She kinda
just wiped the tears off my eyes.
And she was like, "Remember this moment."
[Brandy] I've always been competitive,
and I think the thing
that Jayson and I have in common is,
whenever someone doubts us
or tells us we're not capable
or that, you know, something we can't do,
it just flicks a switch,
and, you know, from then on,
it's like, "All right, I'll show them."
[Tatum] Growing up in St. Louis,
my parents had me when they were 19.
They, you know, never were together.
But, you know, my dad,
he was the person
that, you know, introduced me to the game.
[man] When Jayson was born,
I put that basketball in his hand.
We were on our way home from the hospital,
and I said, "Hey, I don't really know
what fatherhood is, you know,
but I know that I play a sport,"
and I was like, "Hey,
this ball is gonna bond us together."
I was like, "I'm not gonna just teach you
how to grab a rebound or dunk the ball."
"I'mma teach you everything. And how
I'mma teach you, you might not like it."
[Tatum] My dad pushed me
to work as hard as I did.
We had our ups and downs.
[Brandy] Jayson was trying to decide
which high school he wanted to go to,
and we chose Chaminade.
Hi, my name is Jayson Tatum,
and one reason I came to Chaminade
was because of sports,
mainly basketball.
[Hanlan] I've known Jayson
for over a decade.
We've been working together
since he was a high school freshman.
[Brandy] When I reached out to Drew,
he told me no.
Like, "I don't work
with people that young."
And I was like,
"Listen, I will take out a payday loan."
"I will borrow money. I'll make payments."
"I don't know what I'll do,
but just give him a shot."
And he was like, "If he gets through
the workout without quitting,
then I'll work him out."
[Hanlan] The first workout, all I did was
basically just run him to the ground.
I mean, 30 minutes
of non-stop, high-intensity drills.
I got a call from Brandy, and she said,
"Man, Jayson said that was
the hardest workout he's been through,
but he said something really cool
you'd be proud of."
"He said, 'Mama, they're gonna have to
carry me off the court before I gave up.'"
And that's when I knew
that he really had something here and here
that was gonna allow him to, you know,
really take his game to a special level.
He was number one in the country.
And he was still, every single morning,
meeting me at 6:00 a.m.,
making, you know, 500 shots
by the time most of his competitors
were, you know, waking up.
He saw how much his mom sacrificed for him
to give him all the best opportunities
that he could possibly have.
The thing I've always loved about Jayson
was he put all of his eggs in one basket.
There was no plan B.
[Tatum] 'Cause I had dreams
of playing in the NBA.
Never let anybody tell you
what you can and can't be.
With the third pick in the 2017 NBA Draft,
the Boston Celtics select
Jayson Tatum from Duke University.
[cheering]

[Tatum] When I first got here, I was 19.
I was just happy to be in the NBA.
I wasn't thinking about
leaving my mark here in Boston.
I just wanted to play basketball.
[commentator] Tatum.

He can do it all.

and being on Boston,

that comes with that.
Whether you turn on the TV
and watch it or not,
you're always gonna hear it. Those clips,
those comments are always there.

and talks and battles with my coaches,
and I get it,
but I also understand me, and I get me,

being 18, 19, 20, 21 years old

and being able to do what you wanna do
and not be able
to just walk into a movie theater
and not be able
to just go to an amusement park
or not be able to hang out
with your friends and go out and just
be a kid?

Everyone thinks he's, like,
the legend of basketball.
But all we think is, like, he's our dad,
and he's, like, just,
like, a normal person.
I can only turn like this right now.

The James household is
a fun household, I think.

on what we wanted to be when we got older.

I wanna be in the NBA."
She kinda laughed and was like,
"You need to be more realistic."
And I remember going home and crying
and telling my mom I was embarrassed.
And I'll never forget. She kinda
just wiped the tears off my eyes.
And she was like, "Remember this moment."
[Brandy] I've always been competitive,
and I think the thing
that Jayson and I have in common is,
whenever someone doubts us
or tells us we're not capable
or that, you know, something we can't do,
it just flicks a switch,
and, you know, from then on,
it's like, "All right, I'll show them."
[Tatum] Growing up in St. Louis,
my parents had me when they were 19.
They, you know, never were together.
But, you know, my dad,
he was the person
that, you know, introduced me to the game.
[man] When Jayson was born,
I put that basketball in his hand.
We were on our way home from the hospital,
and I said, "Hey, I don't really know
what fatherhood is, you know,
but I know that I play a sport,"
and I was like, "Hey,
this ball is gonna bond us together."

[Tatum] My dad pushed me
to work as hard as I did.
We had our ups and downs.
[Brandy] Jayson was trying to decide
which high school he wanted to go to,
and we chose Chaminade.
Hi, my name is Jayson Tatum,
and one reason I came to Chaminade
was because of sports,
mainly basketball.
[Hanlan] I've known Jayson
for over a decade.
We've been working together
since he was a high school freshman.
[Brandy] When I reached out to Drew,
he told me no.
Like, "I don't work
with people that young."
And I was like,
"Listen, I will take out a payday loan."
"I will borrow money. I'll make payments."
"I don't know what I'll do,
but just give him a shot."
And he was like, "If he gets through
the workout without quitting,
then I'll work him out."
[Hanlan] The first workout, all I did was
basically just run him to the ground.
I mean, 30 minutes
of non-stop, high-intensity drills.
I got a call from Brandy, and she said,
"Man, Jayson said that was
the hardest workout he's been through,
but he said something really cool
you'd be proud of."
"He said, 'Mama, they're gonna have to
carry me off the court before I gave up.'"
And that's when I knew
that he really had something here and here
that was gonna allow him to, you know,
really take his game to a special level.
He was number one in the country.
And he was still, every single morning,
meeting me at 6:00 a.m.,
making, you know, 500 shots
by the time most of his competitors
were, you know, waking up.
He saw how much his mom sacrificed for him
to give him all the best opportunities
that he could possibly have.
The thing I've always loved about Jayson
was he put all of his eggs in one basket.
There was no plan B.

of playing in the NBA.
