The Hero (2013) s01e01 Episode Script

Courage

Hola, America.
I'm at the top of the world Central America, Panama.
This will be the site of the greatest adventure competition you'll ever get to experience from your couch.
Get ready, America, 'cause we're looking for a hero.
[ Indistinct shouting .]
America, I brought these people together from all walks of life.
Anybody speak English? I'm gonna test them physically [ Gagging .]
Go! Johnson: Mentally Plus or minus one.
[ Voice breaking .]
I can't do this.
Morally Woman: You can be bought, and you're weak! [ Crying .]
I hate this game.
But what I want to find out I think a real hero is someone with courage Whoo! This is nuts! I'm not gonna fail.
strength This is a rock show.
Go strong or go home.
self sacrifice I know my limitation.
and integrity.
I don't trust him.
That's why he has to go.
We'll test all those traits and more, but in the end, you will decide who deserves the title of the Hero.
Woman: Let go, Shaun! Why should you, over him? I know I'm good for the team.
Each week, tens of thousands of dollars can be added to the grand prize $50,000! That's a ton of money.
or they could take it for themselves.
Everyone's got a price.
With up to $1 million in play, every choice matters.
Someone took the offer.
The game's different now.
You are no one to judge my character.
Who has the heart? [ Crying .]
You're such a good person.
Johnson: And ultimately, America, you will decide what a hero is.
Okay?! My journey doesn't end until America says it ends.
Johnson: You will judge their decisions If you make me a bad guy, I can be a real bad guy.
their humility That's the last time I'm backing down.
and their honesty.
You [Bleep.]
snake! Your vote determines who wins the grand prize.
Yeah! I'm gonna go get teargassed now, kids.
I love you.
[ Coughing .]
There can only be one.
Who will be the Hero? My name is Athena, and I'm currently an NFL cheerleader for the new england patriots.
I could get used to this.
My childhood made me a fighter.
I grew up fatherless, on welfare, nothing's ever been handed to me Oh, man.
so I wouldn't cross me.
I have quite the temper.
Charles: Anyone here? My name is Charles, I'm from L.
A.
, and I'm a police officer.
Hi.
Charles.
I'm Charles.
Nice to meet you.
Being a police officer, I lay my life on the line every single day I go to work.
I can't think of anything more heroic than that.
What's up? Welcome to my house.
My name is Darnell, been married for about six years now.
As far as heroes go, I guess I'm a hero in my own right so far as with my family.
Damn.
I'm a hero to all the short guys out there go, short people 'cause we winning.
The super friends.
Wow.
Where is everybody? It's just me? My name is David Parkus, and I'm a trauma surgeon.
I'm the old guy.
I'm 50.
Darnell: You don't look 50, man.
You kept yourself in good shape.
Charles: It's 'cause he moisturizes.
[ Chuckling .]
Yeah, right.
I came here to prove something to myself.
I had a really tough year and a half.
I got married for the first time, and it didn't work out.
She cheated, and my wall's up.
It's gonna be hard for me to fully trust anyone on this show.
Hey, what's up, man? I'm Marty.
Marty.
David.
I'm Marty.
I'm, like, crazy, you know? And a lot of my friends are like, "you're nuts, man.
" So, this is, like, where we're staying? Mm-hmm.
Bam! Oh! I just can't wait! I just want to friggin' climb trees and, like, fight [Bleep.]
monkeys and [Bleep.]
like I just want to go.
It's gonna be so sick.
Yes! [ Chuckles .]
Charles: Come on in.
Hi.
How you doing? I'm your host The Rock.
I look different, I know.
I hope this guy is not the host of the show.
Like [Scoffs.]
I want to see The Rock.
What's your name? Lydia walks into the house, and she brushed me off.
Ugh! It just rubbed me the wrong way.
Holy crap.
My name is Rachel.
As a single parent, I work seven days a week.
Look at this! So I am here to make a better situation for a beautiful little boy that I miss so much.
I love your hair.
Damn.
How many people are coming? Hi.
Hi.
I'm Charles.
Hi, Charles.
So good to meet you.
My name is Patty.
I'm from Ashland, Massachusetts.
I'm a crier.
Sorry now.
[ Crying .]
Oh, my God.
Are we living here? I have three awesome children Connor, Alex, and Madeline and they are my entire world.
Are you gonna be the crybaby on the show? I'm sorry.
I won't be obnoxious after today.
I promise.
I'm fairly tough.
I'm fairly tough until this.
I'm afraid of heights, so I'm just gonna peek like that.
[ Chuckles .]
I'm a little worried about this Patty.
We're on a show called "the Hero," and Patty won't even go out to the balcony.
What's going on, everybody? My name is Shaun, and I'm a professional wrestler/ sports entertainer.
Charles: Shaun is big.
Look at him.
[ Chuckling .]
Look at Shaun.
What do you eat? Raw cows.
[ Laughing .]
Look at him.
When I was growing up, I always wanted to be the Hero, I always wanted to be the good guy.
But for some reason, people see me and they're like, "aw, that's" you know, "you're a dick.
" So, tell me what you do.
What do you do? Um, I'm a ballerina.
[ Helicopter blades whirring .]
Oh, my God! [ Gasps .]
Ah! What was that? Holy cow! [ All shouting .]
That's The Rock! I know him! Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Rachel: I mean, obviously, when you think of The Rock, you think of two words "big" and "damn!" Attention, heroes.
You're about to dive headfirst into a life-changing adventure.
Millions of Americans will be watching to see if you got what it takes.
Well, I've got up to a million dollars in play that says you do, and it all starts now.
Now, there are nine of you.
But for this first team challenge, I only need six.
Welcome to "the Hero.
" Time to bring it.
[ Contestants cheering .]
Patty: I think I just peed myself! Johnson: America, these nine contestants aren't heroes yet, but I'm gonna test their courage, strength, integrity, and more to see if they have what it takes to be one.
In the end, you will help me decide who is the Hero.
All right, read it out loud, Marty.
Damn.
"And each week, the goal of this game "is to narrow your field from 9 to just 1.
That one person goes on to the Hero's challenge.
" It's kind of like the last man standing.
"This hero will attempt to win $50,000 "for the team to put in the grand prize pot.
"However The hero has the option "to take this money for themselves going against the group's will.
" No.
You're an idiot if you do that.
We have to decide, who can we trust to put the money in the pot each week? That's pretty beast.
I'm starting to understand that this game is about trust.
I don't think that it's wrong to keep the $50,000.
Being greedy's not good.
That's not a hero.
I think it's brave of Lydia to say that she's gonna keep the $50,000.
But when it comes to vote time, will I vote to put Lydia in ever in the Hero challenge? No.
There no team in keeping $50,000.
I'd be like, that girl wants it for herself.
That's not a hero.
A hero is someone honest and with integrity, and in that moment, I was being honest.
Student loans hello? Down payment on a house.
The rest of the people in that room were being dishonest.
I saw the looks on their faces.
They have no intention of putting that money in the pot.
Shaun: "Only six can go to the team challenge.
" "If you are successful in the team challenge, "your time allotted to complete the solo hero's challenge will be doubled.
" Patty: "And $10,000 will be given to the American red cross.
" [ Cheers and applause .]
Every time we succeed, we don't just help ourselves.
We're putting a big chunk of change in the pocket for the red cross to help a lot of people.
Man, every single person involved with the red cross they are all heroes.
"You have tonight to decide.
"Tomorrow get to tower bank.
The team challenge: Swing.
Hand to hand.
" That sounds like upper-body strength is necessary.
Marty: Yeah.
Athena: Only six people go out every week.
You have to be in the team challenge to even be eligible for the Hero's challenge.
Who thinks that it's gonna involve heights? I do.
No, I think the key word is "swing.
" Marty: You're not swinging on the ground.
Unless you're, like, at a swing dance you're like, "whee!" I was gonna say, it could be a dance.
It could be a dance.
I can dance.
I have no idea what we're doing, but all I know is that I'm gonna be out there.
Who doesn't want to do it if it has to do with heights? Lydia: I'm gonna say you should sit out just because of your huge fear of heights.
Just in case it is, you know? Patty: Of course, they all were telling me I shouldn't do it, and I was quick to agree.
However, if it's swing dancing, I am gonna howl.
I'm a great competitor.
I'm not a great climber, so I'll be out this time.
I'll be a team player.
I'll take one for the team the first go-round.
I guarantee you, you know, I'm not sitting again.
Rachel: So, how many girls and how many guys are we taking? Three and three.
Charles, I think you should go.
I've rappelled before, you know, Mountain-climbed.
Dave's got to go.
I have to go.
I think you should stay.
I have to go.
Shaun, I just think we should take someone lighter.
Shaun: It comes down to me and Marty, and the strongest link in the chain is not gonna be sent? That's actually a choice? I want to go.
I want to be in that.
I've rappelled before.
I'm two strongest guys, right? Both of you two can't go.
I got to go.
10 seconds why should you go? I have experience with heights.
I have experience with rock-climbing.
I've rappelled before.
And you, Shaun? Pretty much exactly what he just said.
I think our strength for this one's gonna be Shaun, and Marty will be a good anchor for the next one.
No, I'm a [Bleep.]
anchor for this one.
Like, that's why I'm here.
Are you okay with that? I guess you guys can vote.
Whatever.
I don't care.
He doesn't like it obviously, I won't go Patty: Yeah, see, I'm sorry.
I look at Marty and think his drive and determination is something that would bring success.
So you guys think three girls, three guys? 'Cause I don't mind staying back if you want to do four guys.
I don't care.
Marty: All right, so, we got six.
I think that'll be a good team.
Athena: I think stepping down and just seeing how it goes tomorrow was the right decision.
But you will see me next week, and you will see me kill it.
Charles said he's in.
I'm in.
Lydia's in.
I'm in.
Dave the doc is in.
I'm in.
Rachel the killer is in? Definitely in.
Shaun is in.
That's right, everybody.
I'm [Bleep.]
in.
Marty is in.
Rachel: Put your hands in.
On three "beast.
" One, two, three All: Beast! Johnson: All right, America, tower bank big, mean, unforgiving, and they're going off it Marty: Ahh! Let's do this! Right over the edge.
Lydia: "Four of you must rappel off the roof of tower bank" to retrieve a code.
" Are you kidding me? Johnson: First, two pairs of contestants must swing across the face of the tower, connect hands, and get a code.
Two will sit out in the first stage.
Me and Lydia will do the next part.
We're a team.
We'll just do the next one.
Then, in stage 2, three of them must take the code to the pinnacle of the tower.
You do all that in 30 minutes, and they successfully complete the team challenge, and $10,000 goes to the American red cross.
Do they have the raw courage to go off that building? Are they a hero? You tell me, America.
Whoo! Oh, my God.
No! Make sure you look down.
It looks sick! Shut the [Bleep.]
up.
Patty: I am counting the minutes.
And I do see Darnell and I see Athena, and I'm wondering, "do they feel like failures?" Truth is, I was chicken.
Me staying home is not something a hero would have done.
[ Telephone ringing .]
Hello? Hey, Patty.
It's rock.
Come on up to the roof, and let's chat.
But try and slip away so nobody sees you.
[ Crying .]
Okay.
When Dwayne tells me to come up to the roof, I don't know what's going on.
[ Crying .]
And the word the "roof" went through me like a lightning bolt 'cause I knew I had to go up high.
[ Sighs shakily .]
The roof? Oh [Bleep.]
[ Voice breaking .]
I can't do this.
Patty.
Oh [Bleep.]
Come on up.
I can't.
I see two flights of unfinished stairs, 60 stories high.
I'm not gonna fail.
I'm not gonna hey, Patty.
What's wrong? I'm so afraid of heights.
Wow.
I'm not lying.
I cannot climb those stairs.
I'm not gonna fail.
I'm not gonna fail.
I am not gonna fail.
I'm not gonna fail.
I'm not gonna fail.
I'm not gonna fail.
I'm not gonna fail.
Come on, Patty.
I'm not gonna fail.
You're not gonna fail.
I'm not gonna fail.
I'm right here.
I'm not [Bleep.]
gonna Yes! [ Crying .]
Thank you.
You did it.
I have never climbed stairs like that, and I don't care how small it is for everybody else.
For me, I won.
I really won.
I already became a hero to four people at home 'cause they know what that took.
So, how you doing? I failed.
I didn't volunteer for the first mission 'cause I thought it was gonna be about heights.
Well, speaking of heights, take a look really quickly over there.
See that black, tall skyscraper? I do.
Okay, right now, four of your teammates are preparing to go right over the edge and scale down that building.
[ Grunts .]
I got something for you.
Oh, shit.
[ Chuckles .]
Oh, no.
This is a good "oh, shit" moment.
Here's what I got.
[ Breathing heavily .]
$25,000 that you can take.
No one will know just me and you.
They'll know that someone, one of their teammates, took the money, but they won't know who.
Now, the consequences of that if you take the $25,000, the two teammates who decided to stay back and not rappel down the side, well, you're gonna force them down the side.
The archnemesis of integrity temptation.
[ Chuckles .]
There's only a one-in-nine shot of winning the grand prize, so these temptations may be their only chance to take home some cash.
What would you do? So, what's it gonna be? Want the cash? I got something for you, $25,000 that you can take.
Now, the consequences of that if you take the $25,000, The two teammates who decided to stay back and not rappel down the side, well, you're gonna force them down the side.
Making them do that will make it more difficult to successfully complete the team challenge in time.
Thus risking the advantage in the Hero's challenge.
Okay.
Patty: I work three jobs to support the family, so it's hard as hell to give up easy money.
So, what's it gonna be? Want the cash? Oh, I'm not I'm not gonna be an [Bleep.]
I can't.
I'm sorry.
I'm not taking money off somebody.
I'm not.
I didn't want to screw with the team challenge.
Being a hero is doing the right thing when nobody's looking.
I need the money more than anything, but I'm not doing that.
I could pay my mortgage with this money, but you know what I can only be me.
I don't want to go back down.
Will you walk down with me? Of course I'm gonna walk down with you.
Okay, down always makes me worse.
Come on.
[ Whimpers .]
Johnson: Heroism can come at any place, any time.
Is it heroic for someone to jump off the side of a building gung ho, "let's do this"? Let's do this! Dave: Go to your left.
You bet it is.
It's also heroic when someone who is deathly afraid of heights takes one step and says "I will not fail" and they didn't.
Marty: I'm coming, bro.
I'm moving.
Shaun: We got to get our timing.
Where are you? Where are you? Marty: I have to hang off tower bank and swing and try and grab Shaun to get some codes.
Dave: This ain't gonna happen.
Shaun's starting to inch a little here, and Marty's doing these Tarzan swings, but they're not in sync, and they're just wasting time.
Walkie.
Let's go, boys.
Let's go.
It's rock.
I'm right here behind the glass.
Marty, you're killing it.
You're kicking ass.
Shaun, you're stinking up the place.
Let's go.
You got to keep going.
I'm getting bored.
All right, I'm getting it.
Let's go, Shaun! Swing! All right, we're getting there.
Johnson: 15 minutes left.
You wasted half the time.
Marty: I'm swinging like a wild spider monkey, you know? And Shaun's holding on like a little Mary.
We got to get our timing, man.
Our timing's way off.
I can't go too much more, you know? Shaun: This is the most frightening thing I'd ever done in my life.
I still don't really think I have an issue with heights.
I think I have an issue with certain death.
Johnson: Shaun, let's go! Those muscles are getting fatigued! Sometimes bigger isn't better.
Unless you're me.
10 more minutes! Let's go! Come on! Right there.
Almost almost, guys.
Come on.
This is it.
IGot you! Got it.
Yeah, boys! All right! You guys are a beautiful couple! Yes! All right, the code 4-2-5.
Both: 4-2-5.
Now get your asses back up to the top.
Let's go.
We got to make up a lot of time.
Charles: The only good thing Shaun did on this challenge was show us what not to do.
Rachel.
Look at me.
We're good? Let's do this.
You only have eight minutes left to finish this and get on to the next stage of the challenge.
Be heroes.
Save the day.
Let's go! We immediately make eye contact, and we try to start the dance.
Don't stop yourself, all right? I can't see.
Ugh! Go, go, go! Swing! Go! Lydia: Come on, guys! You can do it! Marty: You're doing good! There you go! Rachel and Charles they're doing everything right.
6 minutes left.
Come on, come on.
[ Grunts .]
Doing great, Rachel.
I can see you.
I'm right here with you.
When you have The Rock in your ear, you can do anything.
Go, go! One more! Got it! [ Contestants cheering .]
There you go! There you go! Hell yeah! Your code is 3-7-0.
My partner's badge number easy.
You guys just might have saved this challenge.
Get your asses back up.
Let's go.
Good job.
Good job.
Johnson: Congratulations.
You guys did great, but you burned a lot of time.
So here's the deal you take the codes to the top of the world, enter it in the tablet.
Oh, wow.
There's this big glass sculpture, and we're supposed to climb to the top.
We're like, "oh, my God.
" Now, there's six of you.
You got to whittle it down to three.
Now, keep this in mind the three who you choose will be the only ones eligible for the Hero's challenge, okay? That's awesome.
That's what I'm talking about.
Charles: This is a huge decision because one of the three gets to go on the first solo hero challenge.
I want to be up there.
I'll do anything.
We know, we know.
I want to be up there.
And I'm telling you, if I get in that hero's challenge, I'm putting it in the pot.
If we all agree to put it in the pot, we'll put it in the pot.
But let's keep it real, seriously.
We know you're not putting it in the pot.
If everybody says they're gonna put it in the pot, I will put it in the pot.
But if I find out somebody don't put it in the pot, I'm gonna find you I swear to God, I'm gonna find you.
Guys, guys, guys.
This is a different girl from yesterday.
Guys, guys.
No, I said I said Charles: Hold on! We got to pick a team.
We got to pick a team.
I think I should be on that, honestly.
Yeah, we know.
I want Dave to go because he had faith in me to make this challenge, all right? I agree that Dave should go.
Everyone good with Dave? Dave.
Oh, yeah, Dave, definitely.
Number two.
I'm saying I want to go because I want to be a part of this challenge.
I want to contribute to this charity.
Are we gonna do those two because they sat out? Is everyone okay with that? I'm okay.
You okay with that? Yes.
Marty: You have to be an idiot to put someone that blatantly says she's gonna take money and not put me in the final three after I just killed the challenge.
Like, that's just stupid.
I should be on that.
I was swinging like a champ.
We know.
We know.
You should be on everything, Marty.
I beat that up.
How about we say you two decide? I already did it.
I did it.
But let me remind you, our timing was off, but who was getting that timing back on this guy.
I was swinging like a beast, so who got our timing back? Yeah, but I was keeping the swing.
Rachel: Guys, guys, put your egos aside.
I was keeping the swing, though.
Actually, if we had to pick and we are me and Lydia both think that Charles was the smoothest out there.
You guys talk real loud and you kind of bullied us out of some stuff, so I'm just telling you, this is how I feel.
Like, this is our time.
We're good to go.
We got limited time.
Let's go, guys.
Just 'cause my partner was a frickin' hanging log doesn't mean that I didn't do my best.
I should be in there.
You got the code? 3-7-0? 4-2-5-3-7-0.
Charles: A lot of time was definitely burned, so we got to do everything and more to finish this challenge in the allotted time.
Charles: You got it? Work it! Work it! I love it.
I'm coming! I can see Lydia has fear in her eyes, but she is not giving up.
Come on, Lydia! Good job! Good job! Lydia: I'm telling myself, "don't look down, don't look down.
" I might freeze, because we are going all the way to the top.
Work it! Push it right here! Go, Dave! Whoo! 4-2-5-3-7-0.
4-2-5-3-7-0.
We all had the code in our head.
It was perfect teamwork.
This is it.
Enter.
Enter! Yeah! Nice! Whoo! Whoo! "Team successful"! $10,000 red cross, baby! Whooooooo! Rachel: Where's my baby Patty cake? They're back! How'd you do? Patty: I get to decide right now if I am going to share what happened on the rooftop.
Everyone's here? They're doing part 2 of it.
The truth is, I can't lie.
I'm not made that way.
I received a phone call today from The Rock.
He offered me $25,000.
And I also refused.
Seriously? I couldn't do it.
There's so many layers going into this competition already.
That's class.
People are being offered money out of nowhere.
We're breaking nine to six, six to three, three to one.
Patty: He definitely said nobody would know if we took the money or not.
That's the temptation.
That's testing your character.
It's only gonna get more wild, I think, from here.
It's called "the Hero.
" Obviously, if you're pocketing money for yourself, a hero wouldn't do that.
Listen, this is still a game, y'all.
Davey! Hi! Darnell: What it is, y'all? What it is? What it is? Dave: We won! Oh, nice! [ All cheering .]
The three came back.
It's down to hero's challenge.
We have three people, and only the six of us get to vote on who's going on that hero's challenge.
Why do you think you should be the Hero? We don't know what the next challenge is gonna be.
But out of the three of us, I think Dave should go for the Hero.
I'm thinking, like, "okay, it's gonna have to do with rope" and rappelling 'cause that's what we've been doing all day," so I think Dave should go.
I agree with that.
You agree, too? Charles: Dave has the most rappel experience.
He's the guy with the best chance to win that $50,000.
It's a good gamble.
Really? Dave: I am super-surprised that they think I will put the money in the pot.
I'm not that great a guy.
In my personal life, have I ever cheated on someone? Yes.
But if someone has to step up, I'm willing to take that role.
We don't know what it is.
That's quick, y'all.
That's real quick.
Darnell: I feel like Charles is being two-faced.
It just seemed like he was playing the politics of the game it just didn't feel right.
All right, but at the end of the day, us six decide, not you three.
Patty: This decision is enormous because we got to trust that the $50,000 is going to be put in the pot.
Someone can lie and say, "I took the challenge, "and I failed," and the $50,000 goes in their pocket.
We'll never know.
Thanks, man.
I didn't sleep at all last night.
Today we have this huge decision that we have to make, and right now I don't trust anyone.
Lydia: If I get put in that hero's challenge, I'm ready, because no matter what situation I'm put in, I am a survivor.
I was orphaned at the age of 3, so as a child, I had to adapt very quickly to every situation in order to survive it.
The hero's challenge, man that's probably gonna be some serious, serious stuff.
I want to go in the Hero's challenge, but my teammates need to have trust and faith in me, so I told them about one of the craziest days in my life.
It was crazy, guys, I flew into L.
A.
X.
At the end of this line at Singapore airline, and right across was El Al, the Jewish airline, you know, and in walks this Egyptian guy, and he just starts, "boom, boom, boom," blowing away all the people in that line.
Everyone was screaming and running.
And I used to play football and I wrestled, so I just tackled the guy, man.
I just tackled him.
Patty: I mean, this guy lived the show that we're on, and I think any woman would be very lucky to have him.
I wasn't trying to be a hero.
You just kind of you know, you react to things and Shaun: The whole terrorist story or whatever it kind of strange.
Offer it up "oh, well, by the way, at L.
A.
X.
One time you won't believe what happened.
" I started doing cpr on the guy.
I don't know enough about Dave to say whether I trust him or not.
I think anybody's capable of lying when it comes to money.
Johnson: It's time for the six to vote for which one contestant is going to go to the Hero's challenge, but the war room is more than that.
I need you to see, America, how they're gonna interact with each other, how they're gonna interact with me, who gets angry, who remains cool.
In every moment, their heroism is being tested.
They may not know it, but trust me they are.
[ Applause .]
Ah.
Welcome, heroes.
Welcome, welcome, welcome.
All right, we started with nine.
Now we're down to three Lydia, Charles, and Dr.
Dave.
Now we got to make a decision which one of these three do you trust to go on this awesome task? Just remember whoever you choose, if they succeed, then they'll have the option to keep that $50,000 for themselves or add it back into the pot.
Right now, the pot's at a quarter of a million dollars.
By the end of today, it could be $300,000.
Let's find out a little bit about what we've learned so far.
Marty, Shaun, you guys did pretty good yesterday.
Tried.
Tried our best.
It looked like you were spider-man.
Yeah.
You were rolling.
Shaun, a little bit of Abercrombie and bitch going on.
[ Laughter .]
What was the strategy? The strategy was, just timing is everything, and our timing was way off from the start.
I mean, you obviously need momentum, and you need to be able to get to the middle, so I'm like, "all right, I got to beast it.
" I think that's what makes us a good team, actually, because you got a guy who is, as he says, "beasting" and then now I'm basically taking little details and making sure the details are in place, so Well, speaking of details, Patty, you stayed put.
You know my story.
That was hell for me just going up that flight of stairs.
So when it is my time, I don't know how I'm gonna get up there.
I'll literally carry you on my back.
I swear to God.
Like, you can close your eyes, and I'll carry you on my back like a backpack.
My dream at the end of this show is, I physically have to carry you on my back, and you don't have to give me the title that's in here.
All right, you guys ready to move on? Ready to move on.
Before we vote, I want to give you a hint on the Hero's challenge.
The hint is "don't be afraid of the dark.
" Ho-ho-ho.
Six, do you have anything you'd like to ask the three? Okay, are you afraid of the dark, David? Listen, guys, I'm not afraid of the dark.
The question is, what are we doing in the dark? I mean, we're not just walking in a dark room.
Something crazy's gonna happen.
He's got some stunt pulled.
I mean, this is all about what you have inside and I got no quit and I'm willing to do whatever, so it's your call.
I got excited when he said, "don't be afraid of the dark," 'cause I was afraid of the dark when I was a kid.
I didn't come here to smash the challenges I'm good at.
I came here to smash the challenges that I'm afraid of.
Yo, that's interesting you say that, man, because yesterday, you were like you know, matter of fact, I want to ask both of you, now that you know what it is, would you still defer today? Because yesterday, you both were ready to say, "it's the doc.
" I was just about to say, like, I wouldn't pick Charles because he's afraid of the dark.
See, I would put me now, but when you put me in a situation where I'm uncomfortable, you get a whole new, different kind of Charles.
But it's just so weird, because yesterday, you were so quick to say "he's the best man for the job.
" You had no idea I said don't twist my words.
You said, "he's the best man for the job" that's exactly what you said.
Don't twist my word.
I said, when we thought the challenge was rappelling, he's the best man for the job.
That's fine.
It's just that you're juiced now, and even now, you're ready to give it away.
Listen up.
Listening up, cop.
I'm saying, even now, he might not finish as best I'm gonna do it.
See, to me, Dave is going in, in my mind, because you guys both opted out, and you shouldn't opt out.
I was honestly pissed off probably more than anyone 'cause I was like, "I proved myself.
" That's why I'm here.
I'm not here to sit out.
I'm not here to opt out.
But if we're a team, and it's not even just about I don't care.
I know I'm good for the team.
But if you suck and you lose I'm not gonna suck.
I just proved that.
I'll do anything.
I'm gonna be able to do anything.
Yo, we believe that you're brave and have a big heart, but you got to be smart.
Johnson: Lydia.
The bottom line is this, Marty you're there, you're not there.
I didn't agree with that.
I didn't agree to it.
What do you got, Rachel? As soon as you guys walked in the door, you didn't even say, "I want this hero challenge.
" You know what I said? I said, "this is for the team.
" That's what I said.
Athena: You didn't say that.
No, she did not.
No.
I didn't say that to you.
I was in the room.
I'm sorry.
I didn't say that to you.
I said it to them before we even got there she said before we got there that okay, if you're such a team player, drop the attitude.
Iso done with that.
No, I have an attitude because I don't appreciate your condescending tone to me and you making these little snap remarks when you haven't even let me finish speaking.
Marty: When you talk about team, you're the first one that was arguing with everyone about pocketing 50 grand.
You said "arguing" and you were the one that was arguing with everyone.
Guys, guys.
Lydia.
I explained I don't see why it is wrong.
All right, guys.
America's watching.
Let's vote.
All right, well, we started with nine.
Now we're down to three Lydia, Charles, and Dr.
Dave.
Now we got to make a decision who are you gonna choose? It's that time.
America's watching.
Let's vote.
All right, guys.
I hope you entrusted the right person.
A lot's riding on the line.
This week's hero is [ Chuckles .]
Thank you, guys.
I'm really honored, man.
Thank you for voting for me.
I won't let you guys down.
I promise.
I'm gonna kick some butt, I promise.
Thank you, guys.
Well, we're just getting started.
Later on today, you meet me at noriega's bunker.
[ Chuckling .]
Okay, okay.
Ooh, man! Time to bring it.
Bring it.
Dave: A lot of people have confidence in me and expect me to win this thing.
If I come back and tell them I lost, well, either they're gonna think I suck or probably think I took the money.
That's it.
That's what I'm looking for.
I don't really think I'm a hero.
I try and be a good person, but I'm not sure I'll do the right thing and put the money in the pot.
$50,000 is a lot of money.
Man.
High up here, man.
[ Echoing .]
Whoa.
God dang, it's deep.
Man, it's dark in here.
What's up, doc? Whoa.
Hey, rock.
What's up? Be careful.
Be careful.
How you doing, man? Yeah, there's a big shaft right there.
All right, well, this bunker used to belong to Manuel noriega, as you know, one of the world's most ruthless and brutal dictators ever.
Now, somewhere down there is $50,000 locked onto a generator.
I'm gonna give you a code that you got to remember.
Okay.
Okay? 2-6-3 I kept repeating it and repeating it because the whole challenge would be dead if I can't remember the number.
2-6-3-7-8-3 4-8-9.
Missing one more.
2-6-3-7-8-9 No, 2-6-37-8-3 0-4-8-9.
Got it? I hope.
All right, follow me.
Dr.
Dave, that's where you're gonna go.
I want to remind you because you guys succeeded, you've got 20 minutes.
If you had failed, you would have only had 10.
Get down there and get that money and come right back up.
I can do it.
Doctor, one more thing.
Not so quick.
Let me see the flashlight.
I knew there was something.
Let me see these.
Oh, man.
All right, heroes aren't afraid of the dark.
[ Chuckles .]
I got one thing for you.
Here.
Put those on.
[ Inhales sharply .]
All right.
Do it.
That's all I got, huh? Come on.
All right.
[ Grunts .]
[ Grunts .]
Going into a dark cave you don't know what you go into.
[ Grunts .]
There's a box here.
I don't care who you are that's scary.
My heart was pumping I'm not lying.
There's an opening.
There's something.
[ Grunts .]
Yeah, it looks like Oh.
This is where I started.
Damn it.
Like a dummy, I went right back to the shaft that I came down.
This is hard.
I can't see anything.
I can't see anything.
[ Thud .]
Oh, whoa.
Okay.
Okay.
All right, where am I? Okay.
There's another opening I can squeeze through.
God, this maze is crazy.
This is called "the Hero," and it's called "the Hero" for a reason, man.
These challenges are for real.
I can't see anything.
The Rock wants someone with heart, someone who's got something inside.
That's what he's looking for, and he's gonna test every fear that we have.
He's gonna bring it out of us with these challenges.
It's so dark.
Okay.
Okay, w-where am I? [ Coughs .]
Is this it? Is this it? This is it.
Something's moving.
Something's on my leg.
Damn! Tarantulas damn! I knew one was on my neck.
Tarantulas seriously? I hate tarantulas.
I have dirt in my mouth, tarantulas all over me, and it's pitch-black.
All I'm thinking is, "I don't want to let my teammates down," 'cause I know they're back in that house thinking about me.
[ Laughter .]
Athena: Oh, my God! This is how we do it! Whoo! Whoo! [ Laughter .]
All: Back, kick, back, knee, back [ Grunts .]
All: Ohh! Dave: Ah.
Feels like an opening here.
Maybe this is it.
Oh I think I made it.
There's the tablet.
All right.
All right.
If I can't remember this code, I can't unlock the box and I can't make it back and the whole thing's ruined.
Oh [Bleep.]
the code.
2-6 Got to move.
I'm running out of time.
Come on, come on, come on, come on.
0, 0, 0.
All right, what do I do? Oh [Bleep.]
the code.
2-6 [ Panting .]
3 7 Come on.
Please tell me I remember.
8-3 Come on, come on, come on, come on.
0, 0, 0.
Come on, come on, come on.
8 Come on, 9, 9, 9.
That's got to be it.
That's got to be it.
Come on.
Please.
Bam.
[ Beep .]
Yes! Okay, 6-3-9-2.
Thank God I don't know how I did it, but I memorized those nine numbers, and I put those nine numbers in, and it gave me the code for the padlock and open it up.
It's the money! All right! Whoo! That's 50 g's.
All right, let me get out of here.
There was a headlight, and I was so thankful 'cause I don't want to go back through this maze in complete darkness.
[ Clatter .]
Ugh! I'm wasting so much time! Damn! Oh, man.
I hate tarantulas.
Damn! All right.
Aah! I had one of those crawl on my neck! Come on, Dave.
Come on.
Come on.
God, I lost the money! Damn! The money fell out! [ Panting .]
You know, I was screwed.
Oh, man, this is slowing me down.
I can't leave without the money, you know? Damn.
I was right there.
[ Grunting .]
Come on.
Not gonna quit.
Come on.
[ Breathing heavily .]
So, I run out and I see The Rock, man, and he's expressionless.
I have a sinking feeling inside because I feel like I was down there for a long time.
I hope I didn't blow it.
[ Grunting, panting .]
Did I do it, man? Did I do it? All right, Dr.
Dave.
You want to know your official diagnosis? Yes, sir.
You just won $50,000.
Yeah! [ Laughs .]
Are you kidding me?! Thank you, man! Great job! I didn't want to let you down, the team great job.
Great job.
That was sick, man.
Look.
You earned that.
Let me see that.
Yeah, man, kind of caught a chain fence, man.
Yeah, you did.
[ Laughs .]
That was crazy, dude.
So, $50,000.
Feels great, man.
What does it mean to you? What would $50,000 mean? Means the world.
I got debts, like everybody else.
It'd help pay it off.
But, you know, I guess I got a big decision to make here.
You do.
Well, here's the thing.
If you decide to keep the money, it's just between us.
It's up to you.
$50,000.
Man, $50,000 would be sweet to keep.
That's a lot of money.
That's a ton of money.
You're taking a big chance by giving up the money because if you do that, you only have a one-in-nine chance of winning it back.
That's a lot of money, man.
That's my money.
All I got say is, I'm keeping it.
I don't care who you are there's a little devil on your shoulder that's like, "Dave, take the money.
" My decision is, I'm gonna stick with it.
I'm gonna put this in the pot.
You're not keeping it? No, I'm not.
$50,000 back in the pot.
Yeah.
I'm gonna keep my word.
I think that's more important right now.
Man of integrity.
Maybe down at the end of the game, if America votes me as a hero, I'll get it back.
We'll see how it goes.
You earned it.
Get your ass in here, man.
Thank you.
Congratulations.
All right, now, go back, tell your teammates.
All right.
Thank you.
It was just more important for me to do this the right way and leave here feeling good about myself.
When you got nowhere to go but up, you go up.
And I'm up now.
I'm leaving with a smile.
[ Voice breaking .]
I mean that.
Well, America, looks like we got our first hero.
Athena: Dave! Oh, my God! You're bleeding! Athena: When Dave came back from his challenge, he looks tattered and torn and beat up.
And I did like I said I'm gonna put it in the jackpot.
[ Cheers and applause .]
Shaun: He put the money in the pot.
It's just, everybody's method with this whole thing is just kind of silly.
Everybody thinks that they're So righteous.
You think just because they're good people, they're turning down the money I'm not buying.
To me, they're turning down the money because they want to look good to everybody, every one of you sitting at home so then they can win the bigger money.
This is greed.
This is not generosity.
