The Job (2013) s01e01 Episode Script
The Palm
1 Male announcer: More than 12 million Americans are looking for jobs.
It's been really difficult.
It's definitely not easy out there.
Announcer: But with so many candidates applying for each job opening, the odds are stacked against them, and the employer has all the power.
Something's wrong with your resume, you don't have enough experience.
It's just on and on and on.
Announcer: Tonight, everything changes.
Five candidates will attempt to win over their dream employer.
I'm from a small, small town in Idaho, so this opportunity would be out of my reach normally.
Announcer: But it won't be easy.
I don't need to know your sign of the zodiac.
You have your mom as a reference.
I notice that you're conversational in Spanish.
Uh, quiero es traba trabajar.
Announcer: If a candidate makes a good impression, they'll find themselves in a once in a lifetime dilemma because waiting in the wings are three other highly desirable companies who want to pounce and snatch up a candidate with a job offer of their own.
There's no way you're gonna get this job.
I'm officially offering you a position.
Announcer: For the first time, the job candidate can choose the job they want.
I'm gonna personally take you under my wing.
If I offered you a job right now, would you say yes? Umannouncer: Tonight on the job, our candidates are interviewing at the legendary restaurant, the palm.
So if you've never been to the palm before, you're walking into a party that's been going on for 88 years.
The palm is a fourth-generation, two-family owned and operated restaurant.
It is a leader in the fine dining industry.
We're basically in every major city in the United States of America, and tonight, we're gonna hire one assistant manager.
There's no better company than the palm to be with.
You've got a front row seat to have seen celebrities walk through your door.
It could be a movie star.
It could be a president.
It could be a famous athlete.
When you're an employee of the palm, we don't view you as an employee.
We view you as part of the family.
Announcer: Only one of these five highly qualified candidates can win their dream job I have a large family.
I have six kids.
I don't intimidate easily.
You know, I might look really laid back and chilled out, but when it comes down to it, I'm ready to go.
Announcer: Or will another company try to lure them away? The nerve-wrecking, nail-biting interview of their lives starts now.
This is the job.
[Cheers and applause.]
Hello, everyone, I'm Lisa ling, and welcome to the job.
We're coming to you from New York City, and the biggest issue here and across the country, we all know, is jobs.
The restaurant industry employs 12.
9 million people nationally.
That's 10% of the American workforce.
And tonight, five experienced and very qualified candidates will interview for a massive opportunity at one of America's greatest restaurants, the palm.
So please welcome, from the palm, co-chairman and co-owner, Wally ganzi.
[Applause.]
General manager, Janice sheil.
And finally, executive vice president, Bruce bozzi Jr.
Welcome.
[Applause.]
Bruce, why did you want the palm to be part of the job? Well, the palm has a strong tradition.
We've been going strong since 1926, so we're always looking for great, great talent to carry on the legacy and the tradition of our company.
And Wally, what is the position you're offering, and why is it such an important one to the palm team? Well, today, we're hiring for an assistant manager's position, and this job is so important because an assistant manager, in many cases, will be the first person that a customer will come in contact with.
So first impression's the key.
All right, it's time to meet our candidates.
Up first from mounalua, Hawaii, Anthony hollinrake.
[Applause.]
Aloha.
My name is Anthony hollinrake.
I'm originally from Hawaii.
I currently live in California.
I'm the lead server for the restaurant I work with.
Oh, man, I bring a great passion for the food and beverage industry.
I love food.
I love service.
I love people.
I have great role models in my parents, my father being first and foremost one of the best role models a young man can have growing up, and this opportunity with the palm it'll allow me to, you know, make my parents proud and set a good example for my younger siblings.
Next from Chicago, Illinois, Maggie nachman.
[Cheers and applause.]
Welcome, palm family.
My name is Maggie nachman.
I recently relocated to New York city to find my dream job.
I've been working in the restaurant industry for five years.
I've hostessed, I've bartended, I've waitressed, I've worked in all departments.
But there was one key factor missing, and that was the family.
So if you will please accept me, I want to give you my 110% dedication to your company.
[Applause.]
Our third candidate from rigby, Idaho, Ryan pickett.
[Applause.]
Hello, everyone.
My name is Ryan pickett, and I'm from rigby, Idaho.
After my parents moved to the U.
S.
from Argentina, they decided to start a restaurant, and there I grew to love people, food, and service.
And loving the industry so much, I decided to start my own restaurant, and it went splendidly for three years, and then I was diagnosed with cancer.
And I was forced to sell out.
Now, I want to make a comeback, and what a better way to do it than a world-class family restaurant started by immigrants, similar to my parents' story.
[Cheers and applause.]
But Ryan, how is your health now? - Two years cancer-free.
- Aw, great.
[Cheers and applause.]
Next from Mountain Brooke, Alabama, jann Robinson.
[Applause.]
Hi, I'm jann Robinson.
Roll tide.
I'm from Mountain Brooke, Alabama.
I'm an 18-year veteran of the food and beverage industry having owned my own restaurant and events and catering service, but my restaurant closed in 2002.
My husband was sick at that time, and after my husband died, I'm basically a single mother now.
So the palm is a good place for me to start over and move forward.
[Cheers and applause.]
And tonight's final candidate, from Brooklyn, New York, Alex carabano.
[Cheers and applause.]
[Laughs.]
My name is Alex carabano.
I'm from Brooklyn, New York.
I've been in the restaurant business for six years.
Actually, a vegan restaurant, uh, family-run.
I do everything in this restaurant from scheduling, inventory, dishwashing, waitering, whatever is needed to give the customers the best experience.
And I feel like I'm at a point where I want to take it to a higher level.
You know, I love the restaurant you guys run, and I would love to be a part of it and learn from you guys and to help your restaurant grow as well.
[Applause.]
Alex, do you do you eat steak yourself? Do you eat beef or I do not, but, you know, I have no problem with people eating meat.
It's just my choice.
All right, thank you to our panel and our very impressive candidates.
Now, these five candidates were selected from thousands of applicants, and tonight, they'll compete for their dream job at the palm.
But just like in the real world, there's great competition for great talent, and it's time to reveal a big secret that we've been keeping from our candidates.
In addition to the palm, we've invited three guest companies to observe our candidates in action.
They're all from the restaurant industry right here in New York City, and later in the show, will have a chance to jump on a candidate that they themselves would like to hire.
So please welcome westville [Applause.]
Yb & company by chef Julian medina [Applause.]
And Maison prive.
[Applause.]
Thank you so much for being here.
We'll hear more from them in a little while.
Now, let's get down to business, and what better way to give the palm an opportunity to evaluate our candidates than to have them execute the actual tasks they'd be performing if hired? So let's see what happened during the candidates' trial by fire shift at the palm.
Take a look.
Hi, welcome to the palm.
We've got a very busy night ahead of us, so let's rock it out.
Tonight, you'll be responsible for the five different positions that an assistant manager would have.
This is a huge, huge deal, to have an opportunity to work at one of the most prestigious places in New York.
And I want to make the most of this because this doesn't happen every day for someone from a small town in Idaho.
The door is the most important place in the restaurant.
You also need to make sure to know your table numbers, and remember composure.
Never look stressed.
The next thing we're going to cover is wine service.
Whoever is gonna taste it, you want to just give them a small taste first.
You put the diffuser into the decanter.
Gives it a nice show.
Now, you always want to serve from the right side.
When they were going over the stations, my mind was ready to explode.
You want to serve from the left, clear from the right.
It's hard to learn everything in such a short period amount of time.
We're now gonna go to the back of the house.
At the palm, we call it the heart of the house.
The person at this station will be running food this evening, and don't forget, you are the last set of eyes before this plate is set in front of our guests.
Based on your performance tonight, only four of you will advance to the next phase.
The stakes are high.
One of us is going home.
I don't think it's gonna be me.
I'm looking at my competition And I don't feel intimidated.
I'm just gonna focus on me and what I have to do.
How are you? Welcome to the palm.
Is everything tasting all right? Janice wanted us to figure out positions.
So we decided Maggie will be working the front door greeting, jann will be seating the customers, Ryan would be working the floor with me, and then Alex will be expediting our food.
Okay.
Going to the bar.
Good evening, gentlemen, we have our parados tonight.
- Yeah, that's good.
- Sure.
Wonderful.
How's everything been so far? - Good.
- Terrible.
[Laughs.]
Anthony's appearance on the floor is - Not sexy.
- Not good.
Definitely not sexy.
- May I serve? - He's been a great host, so we will be back.
[Laughter.]
Oh, right on.
Do enjoy, gentlemen.
If there's anything you may need, just let me know.
But wine service, he was pretty good.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
Jann, I need you to seat Mr.
and Mrs.
wolfe.
- Table number? - 30.
- 30? - Yes.
- We have someone at 30.
- I'm sorry.
Table uh, table number 40.
I apologize, jann.
40.
[Laughs.]
Welcome to the palm.
Okay.
If you give us one more moment, jann will be right back to seat you.
I have not, but I can double-check where she is.
There was just so much people, and everyone's looking at you, and you're always trying to do better and better and better.
And it's it was it was hard.
It was definitely a challenge.
- Wally ganzi.
Sure, and that was for - Joy Jones.
Ganzi.
That's right, and she was she is waiting at at the um your party okay, so Ms.
ganzi is waiting she is waiting for you at the bar.
- Thank you.
- I feel a little scared.
Someone is going to be going home based on tonight's performance, and I'm nervous.
[Applause.]
Okay, when the job comes back, we're gonna find out who will be out of the running for the assistant manager's position at the palm.
And later in the show, our three guest companies will have a chance to jump on a candidate that they themselves would like to hire.
This is the job.
[Cheers and applause.]
For an interview, first impressions are everything.
If your hair isn't groomed, your shoes are not shined, and your nails are dirty, I'm probably gonna think you're lazy and disorganized on the job.
Welcome back to the job.
From New York City, I'm Lisa ling.
These five candidates have just set out on an interview for one of the most coveted jobs in the restaurant industry at the palm.
And it's all happening in front of the company's top executives, Wally ganzi, Bruce bozzi Jr, and Janice sheil.
Now, before the break, we watched as Anthony, Maggie, Ryan, jann, and Alex were put on the floor as assistant managers at one of the palm's most popular locations right here in New York City.
Now, remember, one of our candidates will be eliminated based on how they handled this assignment, so let's see how it all went down.
Thank you very much.
Enjoy your meal.
Tonight at the palm, we will work different stations throughout the restaurant as an assistant manager.
It's a very, very busy night tonight, but I like crowds.
I like people.
Are you enjoying your meal? [Laughs.]
My Southern hospitality goes everywhere I go, so I'll bring it here to New York as well.
Anthony, you're now gonna be at the door.
- Yes, ma'am.
- Follow me.
Hi, how are you? , how are you? Good.
Tonight, one of our owners, Wally, is here.
I'm anxious to see if the candidates recognize him and their reaction to him being here with us this evening.
Good evening.
How are you tonight? Hi.
Good.
We have reservations, six At, I think, 6:30, 6:45.
The last name is ganzi, g-a-n-z-I.
Um is your whole party here? Uh, there may be a couple waiting at the bar.
If not, we would like to be seated though, if that's possible.
Perfect.
- If you want to take - Thank you.
A quick peek in the bar, and then we'll make sure your table is ready to go for you, sir.
Okay.
The gentleman that was behind the front desk was inappropriately dressed, and I asked, "is my party here?" And he said, "why don't you go look for them?" Not good.
I'm originally from rigby.
The it's a little small town, the birthplace of television.
- I know rigby very well.
- Oh, do you? Both: Yes.
- Small world, isn't it? - Yeah.
- Yeah.
You know, I feel really comfortable in the front of the house because people can see, like, "hey, you know, I can tell this guy anything.
" Thank you.
I think tonight my chances are pretty good.
Is everything tasting all right? Yes.
Alex, you're gonna be on the floor, and you're gonna be doing wine service.
Wine service.
I'm excited.
I'm ready to move, ready to salsa this place up, show 'em a little Latin flavor.
Oh, there we are.
- Hi.
- Hi.
Let me come around.
Excuse me.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Is that right or left? I'm sorry, guys.
If I can just squeeze in.
- Oh.
- This is the 2010 martino.
- That's it.
- I'm gonna I'm sorry, guys.
I'm gonna squeeze in here.
So, for you first, ma'am? Yeah.
He brought it in the wine cooler.
- Dropped it at the table.
- Yeah, and it was - already opened.
- Oh! - Yeah.
- Alex's wine service is atrocious.
It's like he's in a diner pouring jug wine, touching customers' glasses.
Thanks.
Just not good at all.
[Applause.]
Well, Wally, Bruce, and Janice, how do you think our candidates did? Anthony and Maggie the transition at the door.
It's very important to pass information, so at one point you were passing the Baton.
Was there anything communicated between the two of you as you were switching jobs? Quite honestly, no.
Um We kind of just we were rolling with the punches that night.
I wish, you know, we didn't stumble on the owner's table.
That was a little intense.
Yeah, that moment was not a good moment.
- It was not at all.
- Not so much only because Wally is the owner.
Because in our eyes, anyone who walks in is a vip.
Anthony, I have a question for you about the way you were dressed that night at the restaurant versus the way you're dressed today.
I mean, you're dressed you look fantastic.
You look great.
[Laughs.]
Now, if the palm job was so important to you, why would you come in dressed like that? I didn't not come up with the intentions to, you know, not impress at all, and hindsight's 20/20.
If I could go back, I'd pick up a suit.
[Laughs.]
Maggie, you seemed a little challenged at the restaurant.
Can you tell me enlighten us on that a little bit? Yes, I it was a it was a challenge, and You know, it was just you're trying to focus on making people happy, and you're smiling, and you're at the computer, and you're trying to memorize table numbers.
You know, and there was people coming in through that door nonstop.
It like, there was just no break, and, you know, that just proves to me and, you know, and to your company that You're a very busy restaurant! And I wouldn't be I couldn't be more happy to to work there.
Jann, I'll tell you.
I don't know where you learned it, but you have "restaurant eyes," and that's a great compliment.
You were watching everything that was going on that I could see.
Thank you.
Alex, there's a lack of experience with fine dining that you bring to the table, and I think the wine service was a little awkward.
The bottle was open, you're picking up the glass, you know, kind of guzzle glug, glug, glug into the yeah, I definitely do not have a, uh, extensive knowledge or experience in wine and spirits, but I love to drink wine.
So that [Laughter.]
- That's a plus.
- I'm good with that one.
[Laughter.]
Ryan, you had an incredible presence 'cause I looked at you, and I thought, boy, this must be one of my new managers.
- [Laughs.]
- I-I really I forgot where I I am.
Didn't you know? [Laughter.]
- Very good.
- Yes.
Great.
[Cheers and applause.]
All right, we're at the point in the show where someone must be eliminated, so Bruce, Wally, Janice, who will not be coming to work for you at the palm? [Suspenseful music.]
Well, we feel there's two that fall into this category at the moment, and, um it's Anthony And Maggie.
You know, Maggie, you were overwhelmed on the floor, at in the front.
Under pressure, you got flustered.
Anthony, you were certainly challenged in the dress, and, um and you were challenged at the door.
It's important in our business that you don't send them into the bar, you escort them.
But we feel that being overwhelmed and under pressure and not being able to sort of keep it together is something that we can't afford, so the person who will not be coming to work at the palm Is Maggie.
Oh, my gosh.
[Exhales.]
I'm just a little in shock right now, but thank you for the opportunity, and I will be dining at the palm, of course.
Um, I'm just a little shocked.
[Applause.]
Thank you so much.
Ooh.
This is always hard, but that means the four of you, Anthony, Ryan, jann, and Alex, you are still in the running for the assistant manager's position at the palm.
And when the job comes back, our top four candidates will be scrutinized under the enormous pressure of an industry quiz, which will prove how much they really know about the palm.
And later in the show, our three guest companies will have the chance to jump on a candidate that they themselves would like to hire.
The interview continues next on the job.
[Applause.]
When you're interviewing for a job, make sure you don't start off with asking, "when is my first vacation? "How much money am I gonna make? What are my hours?" That is a real no-no.
Welcome back to the job.
I'm Lisa ling, coming to you from New York City.
Our top four candidates, Anthony, Ryan, jann, and Alex are competing for a major career opportunity at the palm restaurant in front of the company's top decision makers.
Also joining us tonight are three guest companies.
They are watching our candidates and waiting for their chance to get in on the action and potentially present a job offer of their own.
Now, before showing up for any job interview, it's crucial that you do your homework, and now is the time that we find out if our candidates have done theirs in a rapid fire round of questioning, our panel will grill the candidates on all the essential knowledge needed if you want to make it at the palm.
Bruce, the first question comes from you.
Alex, please step forward.
Your three questions start now.
Top neck, little neck, and cherry stone are three types of what food? Tomato? [Chime.]
If a customer leaves the staff a 30% tip on a bill of $300, how much would the tip be? Um, $90? [Ding.]
When describing a bottle of wine, the varietal indicates what fact about it? Age.
[Chime.]
Thank you.
[Applause.]
Jann, please step forward.
Jann, your three questions start now.
Name one of the two foreign countries where palm restaurants are located.
London, england.
[Ding.]
Which of these products would most likely be dry-aged? Beef, lobster, or chicken? Beef.
[Ding.]
Literally meaning "to the tooth," what Italian phrase describes pasta that is cooked but still firm? Al dente.
[Ding.]
Thank you.
[Applause.]
Anthony, please step forward.
[Sighs.]
Used in many mixed drinks, simple syrup is made by combining equal parts water and what? Sugar.
[Ding.]
Made from chopped parsley, garlic, and olive oil, what sauce is a traditional Argentinean accompaniment to grilled meats? Uh, chimichurri.
[Ding.]
Name one of the top three grades of beef.
Usda prime.
[Ding.]
Thank you.
[Applause.]
Ryan, please step forward.
Used as a measure of quality, "marbling" refers to the amount of what in meat? Fat.
[Ding.]
- Which of the following is not a type of pasta: Farfalle, pecorino, or cavatelli? Cabarino.
[Chime.]
If a party's bill came to $575 and they presented you a palm gift card worth $250, what would be the balance of their bill? $325.
[Ding.]
Thank you.
[Applause.]
Palm panel, how did our candidates do on the quiz? Well, um, Anthony and jann, you both of you did great.
Thank you.
[Cheers and applause.]
Ryan, so far, you've been doing really well.
Uh, in regards to the cabarino, did you mean pecorino? No, honestly, I didn't know.
I should have said, "I don't know.
" Alex, what I talked to you before about the for example, top neck, little neck, and cherry stones are clams.
- Clams.
- Okay? And I was concerned about meat with you when I said to you, you know, about being a vegetarian working in a steakhouse.
And I wasn't kidding about that.
It seemed like it could possibly be a conflict.
You've got some learning yet to do, but you seemed to express the desire to do that, which is great.
So, palm panel, have you decided who will not be continuing on with us? Well, we have narrowed it down to Alex and Ryan.
Um, Alex, your eagerness to learn, your attitude, your personality is great.
The wine is an issue.
We feel a little bit that it's a lack of fine dining experience that you'd bring to the table.
Ryan, your experience is an asset, and your confidence is an asset, and potentially, it might also be a little bit of a liability.
So the person who will not be coming to work at the palm Is Alex.
- Oh, Alex, thank you so much.
- No problem.
Thank you.
[Applause.]
Thank you, guys.
Good luck.
Brooklyn! [Chuckles.]
Well, congratulations to the three of you.
You are all one step closer to getting the job at the palm, but right now, Wally, Bruce, and Janice, you now have the opportunity to protect either Anthony, Ryan, or jann in the event that one of our guest companies, westville, yb & company by chef Julian medina, or Maison prive would like to make a job offer of their own.
So Bruce, if you would, write down the name of the candidate who, if you had to make the hiring decision right now, would be at the top of your list for the job at the palm, and seal it in the envelope in front of you.
So candidates, again, this is not a guarantee that you will get the job, but right now, one of you is protected from being poached by our guest companies.
- All sealed up? - Done.
When we come back, the pressure builds on our final three candidates, and one of them may be forced to choose between a possible job at the palm and a guaranteed job at one of our guest companies.
This is the job.
[Applause.]
Whether you're on an interview or the job, it's not the mistakes.
Everyone makes mistakes.
It's the recovery.
It's how you bounce back.
That's the true test.
Welcome back to the job.
I'm Lisa ling.
Now, before the break, Wally, Bruce, and Janice, we asked you to write down the name of one of the candidates to protect in the event that one of our guest companies would like to make a job offer of their own.
But before one of them makes an offer, they'll get to see our candidates go through one last pressure-cooker challenge.
So Bruce, what would you say the most iortamp quality is that you're looking for in a candidate? Well [Clears throat.]
At the palm, it's all about family.
It's all about teamwork.
It's imperative to know who you work with, knowing people's names and their positions.
And I can't stress how important this is because, on a Friday night, when it's really busy, you can't say, "hey, you, uh, you know, I need my steak," or you need to know people's names.
Okay, so what is the test that you've come up with to test our candidates? All right, so tonight we have seven employees that worked with Anthony, Ryan, and jann at the palm.
We are going to ask them to name three and tell us the positions they worked that evening.
I thought it was the palm choir.
[Laughter.]
They look like they're about to belt out in song, but all right, let's put their memories to test.
So can we have Anthony come join us on stage? [Applause.]
- Hi, Anthony.
- How's it going? It's good.
So, you know, at the palm, we're all about family and friendship and teamwork, so it's imperative that you know the people you worked with.
And I would like you to name three and tell us the positions they worked that evening.
Okay.
Good evening.
Nice to see you guys again.
The gentleman, his name is Is Bryan? Uh, he was the front manager at the door that night we were at the palm.
[Ding.]
Behind him, we have Alex, the g.
M.
For the location.
[Ding.]
This young man is one of the line cooks, Mike.
[Chime.]
- Thank you.
Palm panel, how did Anthony do? You got two completely right.
You got Bryan and Alex, the general manager and the assistant general manager.
And Paul you did not get his position right or his name right at all.
He is the sous-chef.
Sorry.
Okay, can Ryan please join us on stage? [Applause.]
- Hi, Ryan.
- Hello.
You've worked with these employees, and I would like you to name three and tell us the positions they worked that evening.
- Certainly.
- Thank you.
I believe lower left is Michael, executive chef? [Ding.]
The center we've got Alex, the general manager.
[Ding.]
I believe this handsome devil let me see.
[Laughter.]
He was one of the assistant managers.
He was on the floor, and I'm going to say Bryan.
[Chime.]
- All right.
Does he get any points for the complimentary way he was referring to? He-the charm goes a long way.
[Laughter.]
Lisa, the charm does you're in the right business.
[Laughs.]
So, Bruce, how did Ryan do? You got two right completely right.
You have chef Michael on the lower left.
Alex, the general manager, you did get correct, and David is our assistant manager.
He works the floor.
You got part of it correct.
Thank you.
Okay, can we have jann please join us center stage? [Applause.]
Hi, jann.
So, the challenge will be for you to name three palm employees that you worked with and the position they worked.
You would like their name and their position? Yes, ma'am.
- [Laughs.]
- [Laughs.]
[Laughter.]
[Cheers and applause.]
[Laughs.]
- [Laughs.]
- I will start.
This first gentleman was my chef friend in the kitchen.
- The name? - I do not I have only one name.
You have one name, all right.
[Laughter.]
She's honest.
My gentleman here was one of my right hand men in the kitchen expediting.
The next gentleman is Alex, the manager.
[Ding.]
And the last gentleman also was in the kitchen with me expediting.
And that's all I have for you.
[Laughs.]
All right.
[Applause.]
I appreciate it.
Thank you, panel, candidates, and palm staffers.
You were great! [Laughs.]
[Applause.]
I'm sure the palm bosses have a lot to discuss, but before we hear from them, things are about to get more interesting.
Westville, yb & company by chef Julian medina, and Maison prive, do any of you have an offer to make to any of our candidates? And if so, please press the button in front of you.
[Suspenseful music.]
[Air horn blasts.]
[Cheers and applause.]
Jay from westville, known for serving fresh, eclectic American cuisine in a relaxed environment.
One of our candidates has impressed you.
Talk to us.
You're all very impressive.
In any event, one of the candidates really stands out to me.
Anthony.
[Cheers and applause.]
Anthony, you seem like a pretty casual guy.
Uh, westville's a very casual restaurant.
I understand you showed up the very first night at the pal.
Anthony, you can't do it there, but you can come utterly underdressed to westville.
[Laughs.]
[Cheers and applause.]
Jay, what is the position you're offering to Anthony? The position would be ultimately to get into management, but the most important thing for any managerial candidate would be to go through every station so they really know what it takes to work with us, so they really know what other people are going through in their day.
And so they really get to learn the culture of the place.
Bruce, what do you think about these developments? Anthony, you started off a little bit shaky in our eyes, and you've proven yourself just to be incredible.
So you have so much.
And I it doesn't surprise me that Jay is after you because I think you're great.
Thank you.
However, I have to be honest.
You know, in this envelope that I have, I have our leading contender.
Your name is not that name.
So, Anthony, you're not the front-runner for the job at the palm, which doesn't mean that you still can't get the job, and you have a guaranteed offer from Jay at westville.
So huge, huge decision, but we'll need your answer as soon as we come back.
And this is the job.
[Applause.]
When interviewing, never speak poorly of previous employers or their organizations.
It reflects poorly on you, not them.
Welcome back to the job.
Before the break, Anthony was presented with a major career opportunity at one of tonight's guest companies, westville.
Been thinking long and hard about this, huh? Yeah.
First off, thank you so much, Mr.
Strauss.
A pleasure.
[Exhales.]
I-I do think I will be taking Mr Jay's offer.
[Cheers and applause.]
- Wow.
Thank you.
Thank you.
And so, Anthony, what provoked you to make this decision? The fact that it's a young company, and I'm I'm a young dude, and I'm ready to grow.
And I think I'm gonna probably make my dad cry, and then, um yeah.
It's why do you think you'll make him cry? I'm pumped! Well he's such such a good example for me.
I gotta live up to it.
So [Applause.]
Whoo! - I hope you're ready.
- [Laughs.]
[Cheers and applause.]
I'm gonna send you down to go meet your new boss, so head on down that way.
So it's all come down to Ryan and jann, but only one of them will be offered a job at the palm.
Now, anyone who has ever been through a highly competitive interview process knows that you have to face some very difficult and unnerving questions, and that's exactly what our final two candidates are about to experience, because this is the final interview.
Bruce, Wally, Janice, once again the candidates are all yours.
Jann, this position at the palm would require you to move to New York.
Is it really possible for you to take your six kids out of school and move them into the city? Thank you for asking that question.
Um, yes, it is.
I have a wonderful support system.
I have great children.
Sacrifice it's no stranger to me.
But I believe working for the palm and being here in New York would be an awesome beginning for all seven of us.
Ryan You are a small town boy from Idaho.
Have you ever been to New York before, and are you really willing to move here? I have not been to New York, but I have lived in other large cities, and coming here and working, I'll be spending more time at the palm than I will at my house or my apartment or at the park.
Whether I'm in New York or Paris, that's my home.
All right.
[Applause.]
This question is for both of you.
Each of you have been through very trying experiences.
How have these experiences influenced your professional aspirations? Having gone through my experience has made me a stronger person, a better sister, daughter, mother, woman in general to my community and to the world at large.
It's caused me to to fight, to pursue, to be an example for my children, but to just strive past the things that happened in life.
Things do happen, but you get up the next day, you put a smile on your face, and you persevere regardless.
Ryan? Cancer is an ugly thing, and fighting it, learning about people who survive and don't survive, it's so difficult.
And to me, it really made me value family.
Professionally, I want to be somewhere that I can have a family.
I still don't have one, and I want to make sure that my professional aspirations allow me to enjoy the important things in life: Family, friends, and good company.
[Applause.]
All right, well, thank you.
All right, that is the end of the interview.
Both of you are from such diverse backgrounds.
You've had so much happen to you in your lives, but really qualified, and this would be a really tough decision for me.
I wish both of you so much luck.
[Applause.]
A job offer is next.
[Cheers and applause.]
Welcome back to the job where Ryan and jann have just completed the final part of this grueling interview process.
One of them will win their dream job as assistant manager at one of the palm's New York locations.
So, Bruce - [Laughs.]
Everybody wants to know, who gets the job at the palm? [Exhales.]
Well, I am so nervous right now.
[Laughter.]
This has been a very, very hard decision for Janice and Wally and myself.
This has been a great opportunity for us, sitting here on the job, getting to know you.
We never would have met anybody like you in the normal sort of structure of how we post a job and recruit.
Um, I just want to say, you know, the strength and weaknesses that you that you bring to the table the weaknesses are so small.
I mean, you're both really incredible.
So, that being said, the person who will be coming to work for us at the palm in New York City has been the front-runner really from the beginning.
And that person is Jann.
[Cheers and applause.]
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
Congratulations.
[Cheers and applause.]
Jann, congratulations.
Is there anything you'd like to say to your new bosses? [Laughter.]
- [Clears throat.]
- Aw.
[Laughs.]
I speak for myself and many others when I say thank you for giving me, a woman, an opportunity a mother, an opportunity.
'Cause often times we're overlooked, we're passed over.
And I believe that some of the reason why I'm here today because I've been passed over so many times.
So I do thank you for giving me an opportunity.
Yeah.
[Cheers and applause.]
- Thank you.
- Thank you! Ryan, what are you gonna do after this? Go home.
[Laughter.]
I'm going to continue studying my mba.
I'm going to continue looking for opportunities.
Ryan, I don't think that's what you're gonna do.
You impressed us impressed me so much here as I was listening.
We are reopening probably one of the most glamorous palms that we're gonna be doing in Boston, and we would like to offer you a job as an assistant manager.
[Cheers and applause.]
Wow.
- Give me that, give me [Laughter.]
[Cheers anplause.]
Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart, and God bless you.
[Cheers and applause.]
Well, candidates, come on, join us.
It has been another fantastic night at the job.
To learn more about any of tonight's candidates, or if your company would like to make a job offer of its own, go to CBS.
Corn/thejob.
So thanks for watching! Join us next time on the job, America.
And I'm Lisa ling.
Good night! [Cheers and applause.]
Congratulations.
