Dark Heart (2018) s01e02 Episode Script

Suffer The Children (Part 2)

There's been a murder.
I wouldn't have rung normally, but this one's unusual.
Fun and games in here.
Ray Collins, arrested two and a half years ago on suspicion of sexual assault of children under 13.
I struggled to cope with the guilt of what he did.
It's a scar that never fades.
We're dealing with two accused yet unconvicted paedophiles, both attacked with unusual brutality.
This could just be the start.
She's my daughter, and we will all be scarred by this for the rest of our lives.
She used the same words.
Mr Regis, it is my responsibility to inform you, you are free to go.
Revenge diminishes us.
When you decide you have the right to enact your own punishment, where does it lead? Hi.
Oh, sorry, man.
Did I wake you up? No, no.
No, you're good.
I made some coffee.
You want some? Er Sure.
Do you want some milk? Some sugar? No, thanks.
So, how're you getting on with Hal? Erm Harry.
Oh! Great, man.
He's a really good boy.
Yeah.
Yeah, he's great.
They can be hard work, though, sometimes, can't they, kids? Yeah.
He comes to stay here quite a bit, to give his mum break, and, I mean, he can be a right little sod.
The amount of times that I have nearly You know? But that's the deal, isn't it? As a parent, or uncle, or anyone, really, who's in charge of kids.
You've gotta be better than that.
Yeah.
So there's no obvious connection in the three cases at the CPS, and the lawyers handling the Statham, Collins and Dawlish cases were all different.
And? And Statham was attacked in early 2015.
Why would the assailant then wait over two years before attacking two more in as many days? I don't know.
I just I just think it's significant that all three were attacked in ways that inflicted fairly uniquely appalling violence.
I'm saying why does it necessarily have to be one person rather than one idea done by several people? You got any theories who? Yeah.
I think we have to keep looking at family connections.
Friends of friends, maybe an organised group of vigilantes.
Absolutely.
I'm just saying, I see a very distinct rage here.
See one or recognise one? Sorry, that just Sorry.
If I'm right, we have a man in jail in Nico Kashell who can tell us who owns that rage.
Right, I have to go visit my old governor.
I've got to be there at three o'clock.
In the meantime, can you get me or can someone get me Kashell's home address, please? Yeah.
Do you want me to set up an interview with his wife? No.
Just the address for now.
I could never have done such horrible things to anyone, Lisa.
Let alone a child! Which is why the case is collapsing, because I've been the victim of an injustice.
And all I'm asking now is if we could just put the last six months behind us and get on with the rest of our lives! You know what surprises me more than anything, Mark? More than you being out, even? It's you thinking I would ever want to spend a moment more with you than these few minutes now.
I sat in court.
I heard the charges.
I wept for that poor child and her family.
I wished you could go to prison for life.
I'm so ashamed of ever having had any feelings for you.
And I want you to leave, now.
I only wanted a place to kip, anyway.
I'll see you around, Lisa.
I promise you that.
Hm.
Bitch! Hello, William.
All right, boss? Hey! Oh! Yeah, yeah.
Good to see you.
All right.
Don't overdo it.
In you go.
Oh, thank you.
Sorry about the, er mess.
I was never one for the old domesticity.
Sandra used to do all that.
Yeah.
Sorry to hear about that.
Yeah, well They all piss off in the end, don't they? Can hardly blame them, really, can we? Coffee? Er, no.
Tea? No, I'm fine, honestly.
Little sharpener.
I have to be back in town at five, so How are you? Yeah, I'm-I'm good.
Two years clear now, so fingers crossed.
It's great to hear that.
Sit.
So fire away.
You wanted to hear about the Statham case.
Yeah.
Yeah, I just want to see if there's a link between that and two new cases.
One GBH, one murder, both known convicted paedophiles.
A link? Yeah.
What, you mean It can't be the perpetrator.
Statham's man's doing an eight-stretch, isn't he? Nico Kashell, yeah.
Actually, if we can if we can come back to him.
First, I just want to ask you, why do you think the CPS didn't prosecute Statham for the sexual assault? Well, the evidence wasn't brilliant.
Why waste time trying to convict a 30-70 case when you can convict half a dozen 80-20 cases for the same money? Oh, OK.
And in terms of Kashell do you think it was definitely him who attacked Statham? He confessed, Will.
Yeah, but, you know, people confess for all sorts of reasons, don't they? It's not always cos they did it.
His car was photographed half a mile from Statham's house an hour before the attack.
We found carpet fibres similar to the carpet found in Statham's house inside Kashell's car.
On the passenger side.
I'm not saying that he wasn't involved in some way.
I just I don't buy him being the actual assailant.
His little girl had been raped by this man.
He destroyed their lives.
And the rage? Well, the rage he felt when they dropped the charges - the rage we all felt I believe 100% he could have done what he did.
Give it up, fella.
Eh? Cos the shape, the order you're looking for doesn't exist.
The world is random chaotic and cruel.
And you know that better than most.
'Guv, it's Josie.
'I've just texted you the Kashell home address, 'but his wife's not back until six.
' 'Let me know if you want me to set up an interview.
' If Kashell's wife had known I was coming, she could have wiped it.
Wiped what? You don't even know there's anything on it.
If I'm right, and Kashell is doing someone else's time, then his wife must have known.
My guess is she would have been in on it, so emails, address books, contacts are a good place to start.
Except anything you find you won't be able to use cos you got the information illegally.
Josie, there are going to be more deaths unless we catch the killer, so does that really matter? Yes.
Fine.
I'll do it myself.
OK, fine.
I'll do it.
I need to speak to the brief from the CPS who handled the Statham case.
Can you set up a meeting? Yeah.
So I went through all her contacts, and not surprisingly, there was no number listed under Debbie Collins or Gail Watkins.
I went back and tried the initials DC and GW, and that's when I found a number for a Derek Collier.
Did you ring it? And? Debbie Collins answered.
Yes! Ha! Was there any Gail Watkins connection? Not that I've found yet.
So you think it was actually them together, or? We'll have to run down both their alibis, but it seems unlikely, doesn't it? I mean, they're both small women physically.
I doubt even together they could have overpowered any of those men.
It's not impossible, I guess.
Maybe they paid someone.
Maybe, but maybe they didn't want money.
Maybe a sense of justice done was enough.
Justice done for who? For the families, yeah, but why would someone else do that for them, commit such brutal assaults? Cos they could.
Cos they were unhinged.
Cos they understood that pain.
'It had nothing to do with a lack of evidence.
' If we think any case stands half a decent chance of success, particularly one as serious as Statham's, we take it to trial, and in this instance, we authorised charges.
So why didn't it go? This is all in the files.
It was the parents.
They withdrew their cooperation.
What do you mean? Sorry - they withdrew their cooperation? Yes, they didn't want their daughter to testify or to be examined by counsel.
Despite all the special measures we put in place, they thought it would be too traumatic for her.
Might have still secured a conviction but it would have made it extraordinarily difficult.
OK.
OK.
I need to talk to you about couple of other cases.
Oh, no, I'm sorry, I've got to go to a conference.
Or you could just come down the station.
Which cases? So, the parents in the Collins, Dawlish and Statham cases all caused them to collapse themselves by withdrawing the cooperation of their children from the police and the CPS within the same three-month period.
And why would anyone do that? Exactly.
It's completely counterintuitive, unless you come at it from a different angle and ask yourselves if maybe they wanted to keep the suspects out of prison.
Shit! They thought prison was a let-off.
Exactly.
I think this group of parents collectively decided on a far worse punishment for their children's abuser.
And how did they justify their sudden non-cooperation to the CPS? They just They just said it would be to traumatic for the kids.
We need to speak to Debbie Collins again.
Yes, and we need to get a warrant for Nico Kashell's house.
It's time to pay his wife a visit.
So am I under arrest? No.
Greta, you're not under arrest.
But I am gonna ask you some questions and I do have to caution you and tell you that you don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something you later rely on in court, and anything you do say may be used in evidence, OK? Yes.
OK.
Why would you disguise Debbie's name unless you didn't want people to know that you were connected to her? I don't know.
Maybe I was worried when her husband got attacked.
Worried that we might think you were involved? Maybe.
Are you? No.
So when did you last speak to her? Er I don't know, maybe a year ago? And how did you know her? There was a group I went to for families who'd been affected by abuse.
Was it this one? Yeah.
Did you meet Gall Watkins there? Er I only went a couple of times.
I really don't remember.
Who ran it? Er It was a circle, you sat in a circle of chairs and just talked.
I don't think anyone Someone must have booked the hall, mustn't they? I guess.
Well, whose number's this? It was just an answering service so that you could let them know if you were going.
Where was it? Some sort of old council building, I think it was.
It was behind Warren Street.
Greta, this file of phone contacts was amended on the day that Ray Collins was murdered.
In fact I mean, look at that, it was only two hours after our estimated time of his death.
I have a daughter who was sexually abused and a husband serving eight years in a high security prison, so perhaps you'll understand why I don't weep for men like Collins, but I didn't kill him.
Debbie did call me to tell me what had happened, but when he died, I was in church with my daughter.
Thanking God for giving us all the strength we needed to survive.
She might have been telling the truth about her alibi, but she's lying about other stuff.
They all are.
We keep the pressure on.
'So, we just wanted to talk to you' about something you said last time we spoke.
You said, "I struggle to cope with all the guilt at what he did, "what his lawyer did, what the CPS did to our family.
" And I find that a bit odd.
Cos actually, it was you who withdrew your cooperation and caused the case to collapse, wasn't it? Who told you that? I spoke with the CPS.
Did they tell you why I withdrew cooperation? Why don't you tell me? Because your lot messed up.
You interviewed one of my girls without a responsible adult.
Because my solicitor said the defence would have made mincemeat of her.
Well, why not just have her be interviewed again? I'm guessing you don't have kids.
So you don't know what it's like, watching someone you love more than anything else in the world have to dredge it all up again and again and again.
That's why.
Hm.
Tell me about your relationship with Greta Kashell.
I don't have a relationship with Greta Kashell.
Yeah, but you know she is, don't you? I met her a few times.
Where? At a support group I went to occasionally, but we're not friends.
I've met her We've spoken maybe twice in as many years.
And Gail Watkins? Same.
At SCAR? Yes.
Debbie, we have a warrant to search your house.
When we do, we're going to go through your phone records and your computer and your diaries and your address books.
You really think it was us? Was it? No.
Did you ask someone to do it for you? No.
Do you know who did it? No.
Debbie, this is your chance, this is your opportunity to tell us your side of the story.
Because I think in your heart you want to talk to me.
I think you are involved in these events somehow, and I think you regret it.
I think you regret it very much.
I think you wanna talk.
No.
I have nothing further to say.
The assault and murder last week of as yet unnamed man.
It's been confirmed by local residents that both men have been arrested previously in connection with allegations of child sex abuse.
Now, other news, and in the City, the FTSE 100 is up Staffe.
A result from the search of Debbie Collins' house.
This was found in a kitchen drawer.
It's got Greta Kashell in there and Gail Watkins and a number of other names which I'm guessing are other parents that she met at the support group.
Can I OK, OK, we need to run this through Intel, PNC, CMS, Custody and Command And Control.
I want to know what the crimes against their kids were, whether the suspects were prosecuted, where all the suspects are now and where all those parents were when Statham, Collins and Dawlish were attacked.
Ah, yeah, we're getting closer, we're getting closer.
This is good work, Dave.
Oi.
Present.
We all clubbed together.
You shouldn't have.
That's what I said.
It's just man flu.
Er, so the answering service number, did you get any joy from BT? Yeah, name and an address.
Unfortunately, the name's John Smith, line and bills were registered to a serviced office in the city.
What about how they paid? I'm waiting to hear back from the billing department.
They said it might take a couple of days, so Jesus, all right! Almost making me feel guilty.
Almost.
Right, I'm off to the SCAR meeting hall.
Call me on the billing as soon as.
OK.
Just to be clear, this isn't what you give sick people.
It hasn't been for about 20 years.
It tastes nice, though, doesn't it? I'll let you know, girls, all right? Well, as I said, they always paid in cash, I remember that.
So when was the last time they came? What? The SCAR group, when was the last time they met? Oh, I don't know.
Here's the paperwork.
I should have chucked this out.
In fact, I only saw it was still there when you rang.
Do you think if we asked you to take part in a video ID, you'd be able to recognise any of the people that were here? Maybe the ones that paid you the rent? Oh, I don't know, really.
Long time ago.
Maybe.
OK.
Well, we'll give you a shout when we're done.
Thanks a lot for your help.
Give me that.
It's just a kid's drawing.
Will? This is printed on a HOLMES page.
Our HOLMES? Yeah.
Only a copper would be able to print this out.
Yeah.
RINGING Staffe.
Shit.
When? OK.
Nico Kashell just tried to top himself.
Shit! I'm beginning to have a very unpleasant thought.
Kashell would have known Bob Jessop pretty well.
He'd have had a lot of contact with him through the investigation.
Whoa, that is quite a thing.
Do you seriously think Jessop could be involved? I dunno.
This way.
I dunno, I hope not, but I'm going to consider it a possibility anyway.
I guess.
Just keep this between us, yeah? Of course.
DI Jessop.
What about him? Well you must have got to know him through the investigation.
I met him twice.
Our relationship was with the family liaison officer.
Hardly knew Jessop.
Who attacked Statham, Nico? Cos it wasn't you, was it? Did you pay someone? Did Jessop introduce you to someone? I mean, you're an accountant, for Christ's sake! How did you-how did you get hold of chloroform, huh? How did you get into his house? Guv.
Just stop lying to us, you little prick! Guv! 'We will all be scarred by this for the rest of our lives.
' 'I dreamed about killing him a million times.
'I thought about what I'd do, to make him suffer.
'The rage he felt when they dropped the charges - 'the rage we all felt' He's not a happy bunny.
What? I went through the list and checked all the names.
Of the other victims' cases, they all went to trial, no halted cases, no parents pulling out OK.
OK.
Except then, this morning, I saw an update on HOLMES relating to one of the surnames in Debbie Collins' diary, another parent whose daughter was allegedly assaulted by a man named Mark Regis.
This guy? Yeah.
So it turns out that Regis was released two days ago, when the victim's family suddenly withdrew their cooperation.
Do we have an address for him? His bail address was his wife's, but she just told me she chucked him out.
Did she have any idea where he went? No.
Well, we need to find him, now.
Yeah, can I have the number for my local police station, please? That's OK.
Hello? And Harry's really loved spending time with you, so thank you.
What time are you pushing off tomorrow? Paolo's got a job interview about three o'clock, then he'll come back here and we'll probably push off then.
I mean You can You could stay tomorrow night if you want.
I can cook you something.
He's got to meet a friend in town, so Well, why don't the three of us go out, you, me and Harry, catch a film? It's probably just best that I go with him.
Well, I'm gonna miss you both.
He's asked me to marry him.
He wants to have more children, a brother or sister for Harry a-and you know how much I wanted a real family, Will.
And he's the loveliest person when he doesn't drink, I promise you.
Dinner! Well, if, um if that's what'll make you happy I'm happy for you.
Mm, smells delicious.
Thank you.
What is this? Risotto.
Mushroom.
Hey.
You've been ignoring my calls.
Er, yeah, sorry.
Work's been insane.
Well, I was just calling to say if you do need me tomorrow, I'm still around.
How about if I need you now? 'We can certainly expect some thunder and heavy rain, 'lasting well into the afternoon, 'with scattered showers carrying on until the night' 'Heavy showers and high humidity levels.
'This will last well into the evening' 'It was the last attack.
'Police believe that further assaults may be possible 'and have asked members of the public' Fuck! So is this the case? Or tomorrow, or? Christ knows.
Hardly even know my own name at the moment.
My latest wild theory is that Bob Jessop did it.
How's old Bob? Yeah, if you think I'm in bad shape I heard Sandra left him.
How did you hear that? You know.
She rang me after you and me split.
We stayed in touch.
I've always liked Sandra.
She didn't deserve what he did.
What did he do? Had an affair.
What? You're joking me? Somebody actually let Bob Jessop put his penis inside them.
I thought you knew.
Oh, my God! Who was the unlucky lady? Some woman from the CPS.
Yeah? He met her on a case.
A Ruth Ruth someone.
Boss, it's me.
It's Will.
I need to talk to you.
I know you were seeing Ruth at the same time that she was handling the Kashell case.
I can see your light from the street, sir.
I know you're in there.
Open the door, sir! Suppose you'd better come in, then.
Argh! I told you to walk away, lad! Yeah? Boss? Yeah? You all right? Yeah.
What's up? Bob Jessop just sent us a note.
It's a confession to the attacks.
I'm on my way.
'It was dropped in by him at two in the morning' and it's a full confession to Statham, Collins and Dawlish.
We've got a team checking the airports and the ports, but that was only opened at eight, so he'll have a head start.
If you're gonna run why not just run? And why all this? Unless it's a distraction.
You said we've got people searching the ports for Jessop, searching the airports.
Have we got anyone looking for him? Mark Regis? Oh, shit! We've got an address for him now, so I'm coming.
And, you know, I'm sure I'm wrong, Jessop's our man and Regis is fine but it's just best to check, OK? What's that? It's a list of SCAR attendees.
The one we found at Debbie Collins' house.
Richard and Rebecca Allerton? Yeah? What was their story? Er, their daughter was raped three years ago.
There was a full investigation but no-one was caught.
Er OK.
OK, um, you guys I'll meet you downstairs, all right, I'm just going to make a call.
'Rick.
' Hello, Will.
'Hi.
Where are you?' Oh, just, er, out.
'Do we need to talk?' What about? 'You and your missus.
' Why would we need to talk about me and Becca? I've just seen a couple's name on a list.
Richard and Rebecca Allerton.
'That's a good spot.
'We never did get married in the end.
' Er Right, you got a pen and I'll give you an address? Poplar DLR You go on.
Something else has come up.
Is everything OK? It's fine.
I'll meet you there.
Hello, sir.
You called our station.
Yeah, I did.
Thanks for coming, officer.
My pleasure entirely, Mark.
This one here.
Yeah.
Mr Regis? Mr Regis, it's DI Pulford and DC Chancellor from the police.
We just want to make sure you're OK.
Mr Regis? Mr Regis, are you down here? Rick? Rick? Hello, mate.
Do go through.
Oh, Jesus Christ! Fun and games, eh? MARK GROANS Rick, what are you doing? This is insane! Do you know what Mark here did to his victims, the details? Yeah, I read the files.
He raped her, Will.
I didn't.
When she was 11 years old.
And then, he told her if she went to the police he'd find out where she lived and then rape and kill her mother.
Been a bit of a star at school up till then.
Six months later, she's cutting herself, smoking weed.
Now, my little Siany chose pills.
Becca found her in time.
I'm so sorry, Rick.
I didn't know any of that till today.
No, well, why should you? Private matter.
Yeah, so, the thing is, it's not enough, is it, just to lock them up? Not even to kill them.
What they really need to understand is the pain so then they can tell the others like them what it's like and then maybe, maybe they'll stop.
Yeah.
I mean, I'm not gonna lie, it's hard to get it right, and one of the fuckers went and died on me, so I'm gonna go easy on old Mark here.
Please, please don't.
Rick.
Rick! What do you reckon? Both feet? Foot and a hand? What about Becca and Siany? Huh? How are they gonna cope? How are they gonna cope with the pain of you been taken away for a life sentence? Ah.
Already lost me, I'm afraid.
You were wrong about the man flu.
Tumour.
Metastasised, stage IV as of three weeks ago.
There is no stage V.
'Guv, it's Josie.
' Just wondering where you are.
Call me.
Did he say anything about where he was going, Ray? 'No, but Oh, hang on.
'Yeah, there's a post-it on his desk.
'An address in Poplar.
' It was actually at the Marsden where I met Bob Jessop, and we got chatting, as you do.
Found out we were both old bill, and then one day, he started to tell me about the Kashell case.
Course, then I told him all about Siany, and he suggested we try SCAR cos Greta and Nico went there, and then we did.
You know? We all knew it wasn't enough.
And then well, one day Bob had this idea for a rougher type of justice.
After I did what I did to Statham, I was asked to stop, but then last month I found out I only had a few weeks and I thought, "No, fuck it, let's have some fun.
" And then when you rang just now, well, I thought, "Yeah "this is my chance "to give something back.
" Something back? A chance for you to see what it looks like, what it feels like, proper revenge.
You think I could do something like this? If you had the people who killed your parents here in this room right now, yes, mate, I do.
But, eh, there's no point arguing the toss.
Let's just find out what it feels like.
No.
Gov? Gov! Sorry, sweetheart.
Will! Arrgh Got it.
Cheers.
They've got Jessop.
Where? Dover.
How much do you think they did know? The other families? Enough.
Bring 'em in.
All of them.
Listen, um if you and Paolo ever need any time to yourself, I mean, then Harry can always come and stay at mine.
I mean, I'll take leave, I'll do whatever needs to be done just to make sure that his well-being was our number one priority.
We'll be fine.
Thank you.
Bye, Uncle Will.
