Emergence (2019) s01e02 Episode Script

Camera Wheelbarrow Tiger Pillow

1 Previously on "Emergence" A plane crashed on the beach, and then was cleaned up pretty much instantaneously.
I found a kid at the crash site I'm being told wasn't even on the plane.
She says she doesn't remember anything.
So, what are you gonna do? Keep a kid you just found? Dad, I didn't know what else to do.
Piper? Did you forget your new name already? I didn't hear you.
There's a man and a woman in here, and they say they're the girl's parents.
They are not who they say they are.
- [POUNDING ON DOOR.]
- Police! I'm armed! [WHIMPERS.]
Mom, what's happening?! [OBJECTS CLATTERING.]
Piper! [SIREN WAILING.]
[WHIMPERING.]
Uh, this was found on the guy.
No no circuitry, no nothing magnetic.
Maybe you can find out what this is.
I did find out they removed the black box and human remains from the crash site.
You're a reporter.
Why don't you report this? You never write it until you have the whole story.
- There's somebody outside.
- What? What did you say? In the yard.
Go to Mia's room.
Go on! - MIA: Who's out there? - Nobody.
Piper, what exactly did you see? Well, I thought I saw somebody.
Well, maybe you just saw a shadow.
Yeah.
Maybe.
Okay, um I think we should all just try to go back to bed.
I'm gonna sleep with Piper in her room.
Because she's scared.
Sure she is.
Stop it, Grandpa.
Okay, we are going up the stairs to bed now.
Go, go, go.
I'm sorry.
It's okay.
It's been a scary couple days for everybody.
Right? Try to get some sleep.
Well, what about you? I'm fine.
Don't worry about me.
Okay.
Come on.
[LEAVES RUSTLING.]
Mia, you're gonna be late! I don't have anything to wear.
Completely untrue.
Mia's lunch is ready.
Everybody's had breakfast.
Coffee? Ohh, gosh, the service in this hotel is so good! Did you get some sleep? Mm, a little in the shower.
How about you? Were you able to fall back asleep last night? I was too nervous.
[DOORBELL RINGS.]
Why don't we see if we can do something about that, huh? Mia! Sometime this year, please! - Good morning.
Thanks for coming.
- Hey, no problem.
Uh, so, brand-new security cameras Night vision, WiFi-ready And I got Sam Torres coming over to upgrade the security system.
Great.
Thank you.
MIA: Mom, where's my blue shirt? You own like seven blue shirts! Any news on the plane crash? Uh, not really.
NTSB's sticking with their unmanned drone story.
NTSB doesn't have their own trucking equipment.
Uh, probably not.
So, who hauled away the debris? They hired local.
I'll I'll ask around.
Yeah.
I need the coroners to expedite the autopsies of the fake parents.
Tell them to focus on anything that might tell us who they actually are.
[SIGHS.]
Where's Dad? He's gonna make me late.
Do you have your homework? It's literally your one and only job, honey.
Okayyyyyy.
Okay.
- Hey, Mr.
Sawyer.
- Oh, hey, Chris.
Piper.
You remember my friend Chris, right, who works with me? He is gonna be hanging out with you guys today just to be extra safe.
- Yeah.
- Yeah, that sounds like a great idea.
- Yeah.
- [DOOR CLOSES.]
I'm here! Mia, come on! We're gonna be late! Let's go! Thanks, Dad.
Uh, what what's going on? Uh, nothing.
We had a little bit of excitement over here last night.
But everyone's fine.
Um, Piper, why don't you go try on the clothes we got for you, okay? Pick out something to wear today.
- Okay.
- Okay.
What's all this? Uh, security upgrade.
Yeah, I don't think this is gonna solve our problems.
"Our" problems are gonna be solved as soon as I can find out who that kid is, right? Answer that question, we answer everything else.
Oh.
Got it.
We're gonna let the kid stay here with kidnappers and strange people chasing her.
What is the alternative, Alex? Whatever's going on, it is not that little kid's fault.
Ed, I get it.
And I'm I'm not trying to sound like a jerk.
I like the kid.
She's sweet.
But come on, man! She's bringing danger into our lives.
So, what, are we just gonna abandon her? - [WOOD CREAKING.]
- We're just gonna dump her with some county agency so she's even less safe? - [WOOD SNAPPING.]
- I'm not saying that, but none of us are talking about what happened that night.
Ed, you were there.
You saw it.
Oh, I don't know.
I don't know what I saw, Alex.
Well, I saw a washing machine walk across the floor by itself.
Wait, uh, what what happened? This cannot be our lives, Jo.
It's temporarily our lives, alright? Temporary.
We're gonna find out who she is, and once I do that - [WOOD CREAKING, SNAPPING.]
- she can go back home.
[WOOD SNAPPING.]
What was that? Piper? Hello.
Hi.
Whatcha doing? Nothing.
Well, that looks like it fits.
I like it.
Is Alex still here? No.
He, um He took Mia to school.
You know, he likes you very much.
He's just a little worried.
Okay.
Are you worried? [CLICKS TONGUE, SIGHS.]
You know, I don't really like spending a lot of time worrying 'cause it doesn't help.
Are you worried? I just don't want people to be mad at me.
Mm.
Mm-hmm.
I get that.
I am never gonna make you go any place you don't want to go.
No matter what.
Okay.
Remember the doctor from the hospital? My friend Abby? - Yeah.
- Yeah? - She was nice.
- Mm-hmm.
So, she's gonna come visit today.
Um, I guess she's got some tricks that might help you with your memory.
So, might be fun.
I agree.
It also might be super boring.
Hey.
Will you give it a shot? Okay.
Okay.
I'll see you tonight, okay? BENNY: Were you hired to clean up the wreckage from the plane crash at the beach? Get out! What did you do with the debris? Did you destroy it? Get your ass in your car and off my property! Hey! What's going on, Yousef? I caught a trespasser, Chief.
Chief Evans can vouch for my credentials and, uh, my character.
Alright, let's not overstate.
How'd you find this place? Oh, you know, just by being great at my job.
You? You know this guy? He's a reporter, and he's occasionally useful.
See? A ringing endorsement.
So, come on.
Tell us how you cleaned up that plane crash.
We can keep this between us, okay? How'd you get the contract? Some government guy called me in the middle of the night.
Said they needed the wreckage hauled away before the tide came in.
Double OT, so I took it.
Where'd they have you take the plane? About six miles that way, and then about 30,000 feet under the ocean.
Dumping in the ocean must have cost them extra, right? I mean, like, you really made a killing off those guys.
Hey.
Our tax dollars at work, you know? Plus whatever else you're gonna make on the salvage, right? What was that, now? Oh, yeah, Yousef's got a great eye.
He always keeps good stuff for himself.
Come on.
You gonna make me wait till it's up on eBay? What did you get? [SCOFFS.]
It's just the one thing.
You kept the air band radio.
Go on.
Touch it.
- [ELECTRICITY CRACKLES.]
- [LAUGHS.]
Hurts, right?! It's so painful.
It's still carrying a charge? Yeah, it lights up whenever anything conductive with a little juice gets near.
I've never seen anything like it.
[STATIC CRACKLING.]
Hold on.
One more time, please.
[STATIC CRACKLING.]
That's a phantom frequency.
You want to try that again with less Hardy Boys, or? Oh, sure.
It's a frequency between frequencies.
Drug cartel pilots use them to communicate right under the DEA's nose.
Spent seven months living in the jungle for that story.
- Didn't even get nominated.
- You got a box? [SEA GULLS CALLING.]
[CHRIS MCDERMOTT'S "EVEN THE DEVIL GETS RIGHT SOMEDAY" PLAYS.]
Old Blue Jay made a crack in the sky The trees drip rain Cold leaves cry The sun will come back To wash it all dry When we all come out and play I believe Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy I believe Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy I believe Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy Even the devil gets right someday Even the devil gets right someday BENNY: So, you, uh, planning on finding out whoever's on the other side of that radio? No, I'm gonna use it as a paper weight.
I could help.
I could, uh, reach out to some of my sources.
Aren't you already helping me with something? Oh, yeah.
Your, uh, mysterious card.
So, I had it x-rayed, radial-imaged.
No one could make heads or tails of it.
Where'd it come from? A car with a couple dead bodies.
Well, it's not all bad news.
You'll like this one.
My editor tells me that if I don't find a story here soon, they're gonna be pulling me out.
So, if you, uh, do find anything about my radio frequency, you let me know.
Oh, yeah.
Probably not, though.
You're welcome.
Camera.
Wheelbarrow.
Tiger.
Pillow.
Think you can remember those? - Yep.
- You decide on a color? Blue.
With a red door.
What did you have for breakfast yesterday? Pancakes.
Six pancakes.
Piper's a bottomless pit.
You like that name? I love it.
What were those four things again? Camera, wheelbarrow, tiger, pillow.
Okay.
Think we are up and running.
Check it out.
All right.
Oh, nice.
Nice job.
That Uh, let's move that one a little bit to the left there.
Okay.
Alright.
Okay.
We're done for today.
Oh, I've got something else for you.
This is your memory journal.
Hmm? Anything that comes into your head, even if it's something tiny, I want you to write it down, okay? Okay.
Thanks, Abby.
You're welcome.
Third thing on that list? Tiger.
What do you think? She's forming new memories, which is good.
- She seems very happy.
- Yeah.
I don't love this "keep a secret kid" plan.
What is Jo thinking? She's thinking about keeping her safe.
- How are you? - Me? I'm great.
Yeah? Labs? I've got more white blood cells than I know what to do with.
Good.
Sleep.
You look tired.
Aw.
Oh, um, have Jo bring her by.
I've got to re-run some tests from the night - she came to the hospital.
- Okay.
Server had a meltdown, and we lost a bunch of data.
Oh, now, see? That's like I always said Computers.
They're gonna be the death of us all.
[LAUGHS.]
[PENCIL TAPPING.]
[TAPPING INTENSIFIES, ECHOING.]
MAN: Don't! ED: Come on, time for dinner! Coming! Coopers down in Mattituck, had a lawn ornament stolen outta the front yard.
Approximate value $75.
It was a gnome.
They request hourly patrols.
Yeah, I'm gonna have to go ahead and deny them that one.
Then Dennis Ross got contacted by persons unknown online claiming he had an inheritance to collect, wired them 2,500 bucks, no inheritance.
Tell him not to send them any more money.
That's a scam.
Oh, the coroner's out sick, so your autopsies on the fake parents are delayed.
Tell them if it's not done by tomorrow, I'm gonna go in there and do it myself.
Air band radio's in your office, on loan from Suffolk County Aviation Unit.
- Thanks, Daphne.
- Mm-hmm.
Hey, Chief, uh, you got a sec? Yep.
Come on.
Uh, aviation radio? - Yeah.
- What's it for? Whoever was on this frequency was talking to the plane - just before it went down.
- [STATIC CRACKLING.]
And you're You're still thinking Piper was on that plane.
I don't know.
But they do.
How's the house? Uh, wired up and locked down.
Uh, Frankie's covering overnight.
- I'll relieve him in the morning.
- Great.
Hey, uh, Ed mentioned something that Abby told him.
Hospital had some kind of a data loss? You hear anything about that? No, I did not.
Were Piper's records affected? Abby said they were all gone.
Am I just being paranoid? No.
Look into that.
I'll have someone else watch the house tomorrow.
Oh, no, it it's cool.
I do I don't mind.
I can do both, you know? - Okay.
- Multitasking.
Is Um, also, uh, your dad mentioned tomorrow was enchilada night, so Oh, yeah.
That makes sense.
Okay.
Oh, uh, uh, turkey sloppy joes tonight.
- Real good.
- Thanks! You knew that already.
- Hey.
- MIA: Hey, Mom.
What's the homework situation? I did most of it at school.
Just some reading.
Piper has some homework, too.
From Abby.
Memory journal.
Oh! I haven't had any memories to write down yet.
Yeah, well, Abby says that anything can trigger memory, like an object or a song or a smell.
Well, in that case, Piper, I have something to show you.
Uh, do you know what that is? MIA: Oh! Oh, I know.
It's one of those phone-charger thingies.
I want to hear what Piper thinks it is.
Is it one of those phone-charger thingies? No, it's not a phone charger.
Oh, wait, it's a hotel-room key.
No, no, you use that to scrape the ice off your windshield.
I saw that on "Shark Tank" - a couple weeks ago.
- Okay, so helpful.
- Thank you.
All of you, really.
- Yeah.
- You're welcome.
- Alright, guys.
Come on, wash up.
Wash up for dinner.
Five minutes.
[SIGHS.]
I think I made a mistake.
What? How so? She loves it here.
Yeah, she's a pretty happy kid.
Yeah, maybe she's too happy.
Maybe she's so happy that even if she does remember something [WHISPERING.]
she's not gonna tell us.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, maybe you're right.
We should get rid of her.
- Okay.
- Find a farm upstate.
Plenty of land, room for her to run.
- [LAUGHS.]
- Set her free.
[LAUGHING.]
That's not what I'm saying.
Here's what we know.
Some pretty bad people are after her.
Sometimes these people crash airplanes and try to kidnap little girls.
Now, if that was my life, I would not be in any hurry to remember it either.
It'll happen or it won't.
But taking care of that little kid That is not a mistake.
[INSECTS CHIRPING.]
[THUDS.]
Hey, kiddo.
Hello.
[GRUNTS.]
Are you just gonna stare at that thing all day? I have to write down something.
Well, why don't you take a break and give me a hand? What are we doing? Uh, well I think we're gonna turn this room into a real bedroom for you.
So I thought we'd clear out some of this old junk and make room for some of your new junk.
Start with the magazines there.
You don't have to throw stuff away.
No.
I want to.
Really.
I mean, maybe I won't even be here that long.
Oh.
[SIGHS.]
Yeah, maybe.
You know, what we really need in here is a new paint job.
What's your favorite color? Green.
Just had a memory, didn't you? [CHUCKLING.]
Go ahead.
Write it down.
[CHUCKLES.]
[SIGHS.]
Hey, there.
Sir? You got a minute? Yeah, uh, not really.
Are you aware the property values in this neighborhood are really taking off? In fact, I, uh, actually know some buyers who would be willing to offer you a generous price, in cash.
Yeah, I'm sorry, but I'm, uh I'm not the owner.
I know.
I understand that you've been under the weather, but you need procedures in place for exactly these scenarios, Dave.
You've had these bodies for days now.
I also had a 4-year-old with the flu who decided to cough directly into my mouth.
I basically ate the flu, Jo.
Okay, and That's actually really a vivid description.
Well, look, what I can do now is see if there are any tattoos, scars, other identifying features, and I'll get started on the autopsy immediately.
Oh, whoa! Oh, my God, what happened? What is that? Those are your autopsies.
Oh, my God! [GAGS.]
- Oh - [CELLPHONE RINGS.]
Evans.
BENNY: They're after the metal card.
- Benny? - Someone broke into my room.
I don't think anything's been taken.
They're cleaning up.
I'm telling you, they're after the card.
Where is it? My house.
[CELLPHONE RINGS.]
[RINGING STOPS.]
ED: I'm gonna take this stuff to the garage.
And I'm gonna need your help getting supper started, okay? PIPER: Okay.
[DEVICE CLICKING.]
[CLICKING QUICKENS.]
[CLICKING QUICKENS.]
[KEYS JINGLING.]
[TOY BUZZING.]
[TOYS WHIRRING, BEEPING.]
[WHIRRING, BEEPING CONTINUES.]
[OBJECT CLATTERS.]
[SIREN WAILING.]
[TIRES SCREECH.]
[WHIRRING, BEEPING CONTINUES.]
[WHIRRING, BEEPING CONTINUES.]
[SCREAMING.]
[ELECTRICITY HUMMING.]
[ELECTRICITY CRACKLES.]
Piper?! It's me.
It's just me.
Piper.
Okay.
Okay.
Shh.
It's okay.
[SIGHS.]
JO: Yeah, okay.
Yeah, just take a look while you MIA: Piper! I was so scared.
Are you okay? Are you okay? I'm sorry.
Mia, why don't you take Piper upstairs? I know our guys took custody, I just want to know where it ended up.
Yeah, thanks, Daphne.
Hey, listen, I really I don't have a lot of time for "I told you so," so if you can just write your thoughts down - I promise I'll - Are you okay? Yeah, we're fine.
We're just shaken.
Okay, good.
I haven't been sleeping.
I-I've been worried about you guys.
And so I'm gonna sleep here until things die down.
Alex, I really don't think that's a good idea.
Everyone I love is in this house.
So I'm gonna stay.
Besides that I-I recall that couch being very comfortable.
[SNIFFLES.]
Alright.
Alright.
Listen, I need to get into this, tonight.
And I-I-I don't know how late I'll be, so Don't worry.
I'll be here.
Okay.
[SIGHS.]
I screwed up.
I'm sorry.
No, we all got too comfortable.
I do think I know where this guy's headed next, though.
Where? Well, he's getting rid of everything associated with Piper.
The hospital records, the bodies.
He took that metal card from my house.
Which means there's one thing still left out there.
Alright, I think we beat him here.
Yeah, I want to be sure, though.
So, pull my car around back, okay? - Just keep an eye out for him.
- Yeah.
[METAL CLATTERING.]
[CLATTERING CONTINUES.]
[METAL CREAKING.]
[CLATTERING, CREAKING CONTINUE.]
What the hell? [CLATTERING, CREAKING CONTINUE.]
- [RADIO CRACKLES.]
- CHRIS: Chief? - Go ahead.
- He's here.
[METAL CLATTERING, CREAKING.]
[POWER WHIRS.]
[CLATTERING, CREAKING CONTINUE.]
JO: Police.
Don't move.
The gun in your waistband Take it out.
Slowly.
You got it.
Slide it over to me.
[GRUNTS.]
Chris, I need backup.
Freeze! Put your hands up! Hey.
Back away from the car! Keep your hands up! Hey! [GUNSHOT, BULLET RICOCHETS.]
[GRUNTS.]
JO: Hey! [KEYS JINGLE.]
You going somewhere? Mia said I could have a sleepover in her room tonight.
Oh, well you know, that sounds fun, but she snores.
Where did you go? I found the man who was in the house today.
He won't be back.
Why? His face got broken.
Oh.
Yeah.
Listen, Piper, I wanted to talk to you about some of the things that have been going on, um, even before today, things that I can't explain, and I thought, uh, maybe you could.
I know.
Sometimes, when I get scared, things happen.
Weird things.
Bad things.
Okay.
Like today, when the man was here, some stuff in the closet started to move.
And the lights broke.
I think that was because of me.
That's not even the worst part.
I think I made that plane crash.
Something is wrong with me.
That Piper, come here.
Look at me.
I don't know why these things are happening, okay? And it is scary.
I am scared, too.
But you know what? Now I understand a little bit better why all these people are looking for you.
It's 'cause you're special.
I don't want to be special! - Oh, I know, honey.
- [SNIFFLES.]
There's nothing we can do about it.
Don't tell Mia.
Or anybody.
I won't.
I promise.
You have a sleepover to get to, right? Oh.
I forgot.
I broke it.
Sorry.
You had this? I should have told you.
That's alright.
Thank you for for telling me.
Is the sleepover happening? Yes.
Yes, they're settled in.
Those two got tight quick.
- Yeah, I know.
- [CHUCKLES SOFTLY.]
Mia's really rolling with it.
She's been super patient.
Patience has nothing to do with it.
Mia loves her.
And that Piper, she really just kind of finds a place for herself, doesn't she? Mm-hmm.
How long are you staying? I don't know.
Until people stop breaking in.
Until you tell me to get the hell out.
Whichever comes first.
[BOTH LAUGH.]
Yeah.
They're gonna keep coming.
How do you know this? It took them no time to find us.
They're bold.
They don't care if it's day or night.
We could run for the rest of our lives, and it wouldn't matter.
So, what can we do? Well, their biggest advantage is that they operate in the shadows.
So I'm gonna shine a light on them.
Okay.
[CHUCKLES.]
I am gonna not get too comfortable here on your couch bed.
Yeah, um It is It is It is a couch, but not a bed, where I'm sleeping tonight.
[BOTH CHUCKLE.]
- Good night.
- Good night.
JO: What do you think? BENNY: It might be some kind of data storage.
I can look into it if you like.
No, I've got something else for you.
Were you serious about needing a story to save your job? Yeah.
Very.
Well, I have one for you.
There was a survivor from the plane crash.
You're joking.
A 10-year-old girl.
But you're not gonna write about that.
You're gonna tell the story about how she survived a car crash.
I'm confused.
- This - Her name is Piper.
She's staying with me and my family.
Why? For her protection.
I see.
She must be a very special girl.
Yeah, maybe, but you're not gonna write about that, either.
Are you just gonna dictate my whole piece to me, - or maybe just let me do my job? - I'm just telling you the way that it has to be, okay? This isn't gonna be about how special she is.
It needs to be simple.
Ordinary girl meets extraordinary tragedy, finds a ray of hope.
That kind of thing.
How much farther? A couple of miles ought to do it.
It's getting late It's getting dark Who is she? I mean, where did she come from? She doesn't remember.
And until I can figure that out I need these people to stay the hell away from us.
But in the end of the night But I don't understand.
Why go public with a news story, then? Because I've had it with other people controlling the situation.
So don't you worry From now on, I'll decide what's brought to light.
Just rest your head And what stays in the dark.
'Cause in the end of the night We'll be together again Yes, in the end of the night [CLICKING.]
When I can be with you [CLICKING CONTINUES.]
[ELECTRONIC CRACKLING, BEEPING.]
