Part II The Road Bilbo returned from his adventure on June 22nd 1342 according to the Shire calendar.
He was 51 years old.
After that, nothing extraordinary happened in the Shire until mr.
Baggins approached his 111th birthday.
Bilbo was rich, and very strange.
He had been the subject of discussion in the Shire, ever since he had returned from his adventure.
The riches he had brought from his journey had become quite fabulous.
It was commonly believed, that the hill of Bag End was filled with treasure.
But true friends Bilbo did not have.
Except for Gandalf the Grey, the wizard, who had led Bilbo to the dragon Smaug.
Gandalf's reputation in the Shire was based upon the fact that he handled fire, smoke, and light so well.
But his real objectives were much more dangerous and difficult.
But we knew nothing about that in the Shire.
To us, he was merely another highlight of the parties.
But the most dear to Bilbo was Frodo Baggins, his nephew, who lived in Bag End with him.
In those times, I tended the Bag End garden with my old Gaffer, and was on really good terms with Bilbo and Frodo.
Fortuitously, Bilbo and Frodo had the same birthday: September the 22nd.
And this year, something very special was to be expected because Bilbo would turn 111, and Frodo 33.
My dead friends My dear friends Quiet! My dear friends, dear Bagginses, Boffins, dear Tooks and Brandybucks, Grubs, Chubes, Burrows, Hornblowers, Bolgers, Bracegirdles - Good Bracegirdles! Goodbodies, Brockhouses, Proudfoots - Proudfeet! That's right.
Proudfoots.
And dear Sackville-Bagginses - "And dear Sackville-Bagginses" Today is my 111th birthday.
Today I turn eleventy-one.
I hope you enjoy yourselves as much as I do.
I won't keep you long.
I have invited you here for a reason.
To tell the truth, for three different reasons.
First of all, to tell you, how much I like all of you.
Even though I don't know half of you as well as I should, and I don't like you for even half of what you deserve.
Second to celebrate my birthday! And I mean our birthday for today is also the birthday of my heir and nephew, Frodo.
Today he comes of age, and starts to govern his inheritance.
A total of 144 years.
Thank you very much for coming to our little party.
Third, and last I would like to make an announcement.
Regrettably I have to inform you, that this is the end.
That I'm going now.
That I'm now I'm going now.
Goodbye! That old fool.
I've always said he's mad.
We demand an explanation! Explanation! This must be some sort of misunderstanding Maybe Bilbo was a little tired Gandalf may explainGandalf! Pass the wine, will you.
Gandalf! I was just wondering whether you would come.
Nice to see you visible again.
You have done well to keep the Ring hidden for all these years.
So do you still wish to go through with this? I do, Gandalf, I do.
I am old.
I feel thin.
Do you understand? Sort of stretched.
I need some change.
I wish to see mountains.
You'll keep your eye on Frodo, won't you? I will.
Two eyes, as often as I can.
He'll like it here.
I leave everything to him.
Everything? Including the Ring? Y-yes, it's Where is it? It's in that box, on the table.
But now I'm going.
Bilbo! The Ring is still in your pocket! Yes, so it is.
What's it to you? It's mine! I found it! It's mine, you hear? It has taken hold of you.
Let it go.
Stop possessing! That way you can free yourself, and be ready to go.
If you wish to have it, then say so.
But I won't part with my precious.
Don't you understand? I do what I want with it! It's like an eye that keeps staring at me.
It never leaves me alone.
I'm not a thief.
It's not my intention to rob you, but to help you.
You should take the Ring.
It's safer that way.
Put it in the box.
It will be safe there, until Frodo comes.
Don't give it to me! That's that.
I will go now.
Goodbye.
Is he gone? Yes.
He is finally gone.
Don't you worry.
There's nothing to be afraid of not any more.
He left you this.
The Ring.
I wonder why It might come in handy, though.
Goodbye.
I'll be on my way now.
Gandalf? I hoped that you would help me I'll be back as soon as I can.
Frodo Keep it safe.
And keep it hidden.
It took a long time before Frodo saw Gandalf again.
He lived alone and enjoyed his life as the new owner of Bag End.
But rumours told that there were strange things happening abroad.
There were more and more refugees appearing.
They were restless and some of them whispered about the enemy and the land of Mordor.
It was twelve years after Bilbo had gone, when Gandalf returned.
Everything alright? You look the same as before.
So do you.
Frodo, the Ring is dangerous.
Much more dangerous than I could've imagined.
In what way? - In many ways.
Show me the Ring.
"ONE RING TO RULE THEM ALL ONE RING TO FIND THEM ONE RING TO BRING THEM ALL AND IN THE DARKNESS BIND THEM" This is the One Ring.
The Ring, which Sauron lost, long ago.
He desires for it greatly But he mustn't have it.
Yes, Sauron has risen again and has returned to his black tower in Mordor.
He is growing stronger.
But one thing he's missing: The One, which would give him the knowledge and power to cover all the lands with a second darkness.
He's missing the One Ring.
But couldn't this be destroyed? Violence is not enough to damage this Ring.
There's only one way Someone has to travel to the fiery mountain in Mordor the Crack of Doom, and throw it there, in the place where it was forged.
But You are wise and powerful.
You take it.
Do not tempt me.
The power of the Ring would be even more treacherous and even more powerful with me.
It would take even deeper hold of me.
No, I don't want to become like Sauron.
There's only one way.
The Ring can no longer be hidden in the Shire.
For your own sake, and the sake of others you have to leave Bag End, and abandon the name of Baggins.
When you leave, go by the name of mr.
Underhill.
Of course I want to save the Shire, if I can.
But I feel so small and severed and hopeless I'll help you as much as I can We must act quickly The enemy is on the move.
Sam Gamgee?! How long have you been eavesdropping? I justdon't understand Master! Don't let him turn me into a frog or some other creature I meant no harm Don't be stupid, Sam! I've got a worse punishment for you Youshall go with Frodo.
Me? I get to see elves, and everything? Damn! You must leave soon, and unnoticed.
Go East, towards Rivendell.
But Aren't you coming with us? No.
I must go to Isengard to meet with Saruman the White.
We need help.
Goodbye! But the summer went by, and Gandalf didn't return.
So Frodo decided to sell Bag End and his fortune, to the Sackville-Bagginses.
And we prepared to leave.
Two special friends of Frodo half forced themselves along.
Peregrin Took, or Pippin, and Meriadoc Brandybuck, or Merry.
You have to go and therefore we have to go too.
You need more than one friend on your dangerous journey! It's settled, then.
