Schoolhouse Rock

1
[tense music playing]
[Danielle] Down there, totally unaware
we're watching them
[Sara] Yeah! Y'all ready to swim?
[Danielle] are Sara and Eric Davis
and their five kids.
-[boy] Put the floaty in the back seat?
-[Sara] Yes.
[Danielle] They're leaving right now
for some fun in the sun
at their cousin's pool.
[man on radio] Family is in the car.
Time to move in.
[suspenseful music playing]
What they don't know
is while they're all having a good time,
we are about to renovate their home
inside and out.
In one day!
Sara's mom, Karen, submitted
her daughter's family for our show,
but they have no idea they were chosen.
I wanna nominate
my daughter and her family.
They're wonderful people,
they're loads of fun.
But her house is the issue.
We have been married 16 years.
[Eric] Always amazes me
how fast time flies.
-[Sara] Yeah, it's crazy.
-Yeah, it's crazy when you're in love.
[laughs]
[Sara] We are parents of five kids
ranging from 17 to 7.
-Why don't you set these around the table?
-[girl] Both hot sauce.
[Sara] Our family has never just been
only about us.
[girl] Thank you, Lord, for this food.
Thank you for this amazing day.
[Sara] We're currently the children's
church pastors at our church.
[all] Amen.
It's very humbling and very cool
that people see something in our family
that makes them say, "How can we do it
like you guys have done it?"
Our house, there's a lot of love,
but there's a lot of wear and tear.
I was growing and learning.
So, yeah, you're gonna see stuff like
There's no excuse for sticky floor tiles
to be screwed into the wall.
[Eric] Because the oven
makes them melt off!
And from a distance?
-I've never done a backsplash.
-You can still see from a distance.
[Eric laughs] Okay, okay.
We built these together.
Pinterest said it was a four-hour project
and it took us three weeks.
There's a lot of original 1982 stuff.
The siding has never been replaced.
The boys are all in the largest room.
-It's definitely crowded.
-[boy] What are you doing? Boink!
[Sara] There's no organization.
We would like to see
more space if that's possible.
That probably just looks like
someone coming in
who knows how to make the space work.
Girls are currently on a bunk bed.
Tiny, tiny room.
[Trinity] A little harder sharing a room
with someone who's ten years younger.
It'd be amazing
if I could get my own room.
[Zion] I don't like sleeping alone.
[laughs] That doesn't mean
that we have to share a room.
-Yes, it does.
-Not always.
-Yes. Always.
-No. Okay.
[Sara] This is our schoolroom.
Everybody here
has technically their own cubby.
But, really, a cubby for a whole
school year is not realistic.
As parents, as homeschool teachers,
as a family, we're good in those areas.
Our house has suffered.
Our house, we're not so good at.
They're just real special people
all the way around. They give a lot.
They don't expect a lot.
And to do this would be
such a huge blessing for them.
[Danielle] Karen's sole job today
is to keep the family away from the house
from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Any longer than that,
the family's gonna know something is up.
So our team has just 12 hours
to make over the entire house.
This is not just one room or two rooms
and a little flower outside.
No. They're gonna leave this morning
and come home to a completely new house.
[squeals] Game on! Here we go!
["Take Me Away" by Clooney playing]
I'm out walkin'
Mindin' my business ♪
When a guy struts by, what?
Who the hell is this? ♪
We've got an army of people
ready to tear this house apart.
The clock starts now. Let's go!
But I'm not moving nothing! Hey!
[upbeat music playing]
[indistinct chatter]
Oh, boy.
There's a lot going on here.
I can't wait to get this off. Let's go.
[Erik] There's clearly a lot of work
to do outside too.
So y'all can get busy in here.
[Adair] Phew. Let's get it.
The idea that they do school in here
We have so much work to do.
[titters] I know!
I'm freaking out, but I'm also excited.
-We have so much work to do.
-I know.
-[Nick] Whoo-hoo!
-[Erik] Don't go puncturing the house.
-[Nick] I'm not.
-[Erik] That's a "no bueno."
[Nick] Dude.
[Erik] There's a lot of work to do
on this siding.
[intriguing music playing]
This family is the definition of a unit.
-[Adair] The family's beautiful.
-The house needs some work.
-The house needs a lot of work.
-[Paige] A lot of work.
A little overwhelming, to say the least,
but exciting.
[Erik] I think we should
break it down step by step.
All right, so, we're gonna
walk through the entire house.
Nick, start us on the outside.
I got it.
So first thing, we're getting rid of that
rotted, peeling paint on the siding,
replacing it with this new vertical look,
which complements number two.
We are gonna build this massive overhang.
We replace those Adirondack chairs
with these egg chairs,
-so it's kind of quartered off for them.
-Wow.
[Nick] This is their space to relax.
The front yard is gonna be planted
with all these grasses.
This is Sara and Eric's space,
and this is gonna come first in our build.
I don't know how we're going to do that
and not block the front door right now.
I think it's really beautiful.
I commend you guys.
But this is the only entrance.
That's gonna be a major issue
if you guys are blocking the whole front.
I need to be able to get in there.
I have demo happening in there.
I have electrical, I have plumbing.
-You and I are gonna have to work on that.
-This sounds crazy.
Okay. But just keep going.
This sounds crazy.
[Erik] Uh, I'm just
not gonna think about it for a moment.
-Talk to me about the inside of the house.
-Okay.
Take me to the kitchen.
I wanna see the kitchen.
First thing I notice in the kitchen,
they have a flush mount light in your face
as you're doing the dishes.
-That needs to change.
-[Paige] Comfortable.
They are really into DIY,
but they just don't have the resources
to do the full DIY renovation experience.
That's really nice of you to say.
The way that she said it,
that was really, really nice.
All new flooring in the kitchen,
all new appliances, new hood.
Storage here with open shelves.
They love an open shelf. You have it here.
How are you having breakfast, dinner,
lunch, anything together as a family
with a table that only seats
four, maybe five?
-Banquette seating is what I'm proposing.
-[Erik] Yup. Okay.
[Adair] And the living room.
It's a gathering place for everyone.
This family loves to be together.
Right now, the have okay seating.
But what we really should focus on here
is more seating, make it more comfortable.
All right, so we are
in the boys' bedrooms.
It needs lots of work,
but I like the vibe,
this community
that they have going on in here.
[Paige] We are creating a pre-built,
three-person bunk bed
that has some loft style to it.
We're also creating more organization
and a place for them to sit and hang out.
Trinity, the oldest,
and Zion, the youngest,
are not only sharing a room,
they're sharing a bunk bed.
And I remember being this age,
I feel it's super important that
Trinity in Zion have their own spaces
Specifically Trinity, but Zion too.
So I made the decision that
it was so important for me,
personally, to separate Trinity and Zion,
that I've now turned their bedroom
into just Zion's room.
We are making this
an eight-year-old's dream.
And thankfully, Erik, no builds.
[laughs] Thank you.
[Paige] Now we're moving into
what used to be the schoolroom
and is now Trinity's very own bedroom.
[Erik] Okay, right off the jump,
how do you propose that we
actually allow them to have school?
So take me to the backyard, please.
There's nothing in the backyard.
Why would we go there?
-[Adair] Drum roll!
-Yeah, drum roll.
[Erik laughs]
[Paige] A full schoolhouse
in the backyard.
This is a pre-built, it's the entire
reason that it's on a trailer.
I want them to come out and just go,
"Wow. That is so cool."
"I can't wait to go
to school every single day."
First of all,
nobody's ever said that ever.
[laughter]
[Erik] Uh, but do we know anything about
the landscape, the footprint of the house?
The driveway, how we're getting in,
is there fencing?
We know that it's a slope,
and we know that it's kind of steep.
[Erik] The biggest concern
is getting it to the place.
We need to figure out
how we're gonna do that.
You and I need to discuss
exactly what you have in mind
so that we can work within the limitations
of building a house on a trailer.
But I need to sit down with each of you
to discuss timeframes,
because I can't do this and the front
and the kitchen simultaneously.
We're gonna figure it out.
But right now that's the thing
that's giving me agita.
[upbeat music playing]
[Nick grunts]
This is crazy.
Phew!
[Danielle] You're doing great, everybody.
Keep it up! Keep it up!
You got this.
Hold it down. Hold it down.
But don't slow down.
[laughs]
-[Erik] There you go.
-Oh, my gosh. This is crazy.
We gotta get all the siding
off of this house.
We need to replace the siding,
but before we even do that,
Nick's got this whole idea
for an overhang and a tower,
give Eric and Sara
the seating area out front.
-So essentially we have this giant box.
-Okay.
We're gonna set it
right on the house via forklift.
We'll bring the forklift right
down the hill. Just drive it right up.
'Cause the other alternative was
that we build the box right on the house,
-which we don't have time to do that.
-No.
[upbeat music continues]
Okay, let me explain something to you.
Let me explain how hard
these guys have been working,
and how much time they do not have.
So, do you see this red portion?
This represents the facade
that has to get on this house.
There's going to be a big old forklift
that is going to block
the entrance and exit of that home.
If we don't get this handled,
it's gonna push this whole schedule back
into the next day, and the next day,
and the next day.
And we don't have all them days!
So I'm gonna go check on the team.
[upbeat music continues]
We got the cladding going on
on the outside of the tower right now.
Two cuts going on,
and then on the front, we've got another
I heard none of that
because I have sawdust in my eye.
[blowing] You'll be all right.
We need you to move faster.
We are, we're moving as fast as we can.
It'll be all right, man.
[tense music playing]
This is This is nuts.
Isn't that major?
This is major. We can't have
this blocking us for too long.
If y'all don't get this moving,
then he can't get to moving either,
and there's gonna be furniture
just out here in the yard.
In the yard!
What's happening with this French cleat?
We're about to finish
putting the French cleat up
so we can get the box on.
-[upbeat music playing]
-[Erik] So here's the situation.
-You wanted a way to get the door faster.
-Yes.
So I came up with a ridiculous way
to get in the door faster.
-Okay.
-[Erik] So what we're gonna have
is four of these
quarter-inch-steel French cleats.
-How heavy? Oh!
-Oh, yeah. No, they're not light.
This is gonna hold 1,000 pounds?
I don't know that anybody's
hung a 1,000-pound-cabinet on
Somebody Somebody has to be the first.
So what's gonna happen is,
we're gonna attach one to the house.
-Mm-hmm.
-We're gonna attach one to the box.
[Adair] Mm-hmm.
And then when we slide the box on top,
they're just gonna
lock in place like that.
-It's gonna be beautiful.
-Yes!
This should take our time down
from roughly two hours
down to maybe 15 minutes.
-'Cause we're just gonna come in
-Fifteen minutes?
-Roughly.
-Are you sure?
No, I'm not sure of anything.
We gotta get out of this doorway
before Adair has a heart attack.
[Nick] Are you serious, though,
that this this is all we need?
[Erik] I'm absolutely serious.
That's just neat. All the way out!
Do you see the sweat?
I'm sweating because if this doesn't work
I'm beading up. I'm beading up.
I'm beading up. It's coming.
[Nick] There we go.
Adair, it's gonna go up on the forklift,
and then we're gonna drop it in place,
Nick and I are gonna shimmy.
We've only got about a quarter of an inch
of play laterally right now.
So it's really tight.
-[Danielle] It's going down, Adair.
-[Adair] It's going down.
This is a little bit bananas.
[Erik] Nick, in just a sec,
we're gonna be up top.
We're gonna see
how close it lines up first.
We're probably Looks like
we're gonna have to come your way a bit.
[Nick] All right, that's fine.
Have faith. I feel good about this.
-He looks like he knows what he's doing.
-[Nick] It's so thin.
-It's thin and it has to
-It is so thin.
I'm concerned they didn't measure twice.
Looks like it's not gonna make it.
-Now we have the front door blocked.
-Uh-huh.
If this does not work
I mean, we're gonna be so far behind.
[Nick] The problem is
it's at an angle right now.
And the granite countertops are waiting.
They can't get in.
That's the next thing to go in.
[sighs] Oh, my gosh.
[Erik] I'm gonna try to put weight on it.
Oh, no. it's not fitting.
-[Danielle] Oh, my God.
-[Nick] Come on.
It should be really tight.
[Erik] If you get a pry bar
and just pry it a little bit.
[Danielle] Y'all, for real, I really
hope he doesn't hurt himself. This is
[all exclaiming]
-He's got it!
-[worker] Hold it down there!
-[Adair] There we go! Yes!
-[Danielle] Yes!
[Erik] We good. We good. Let's get that.
-Randall, get out of here.
-They did it!
-I told you it would work.
-[Danielle] We are back in the house!
Back to work.
Go, team. They did it.
They did it. They did it. They did it.
Now let's keep going.
[upbeat music playing]
[Danielle] Erik said the overhang install
would take 15 minutes,
but it took an hour.
We're 45 minutes behind inside,
and it is insane in there.
[Adair] What's next in here?
[Paige] Ahh!
-[Erik] What's the word?
-Oh, my God! It looks amazing.
There's so much happening right now.
It's wild.
[Danielle] Is this not bananas?
It's bananas.
All of this is because of you.
You nominated your lovely family.
So where are they now?
They're at her brother's house,
in the pool having fun.
-[boy] I did it! I touched the bottom!
-[Sara] Awesome.
They have no idea
and they're gonna be so surprised.
They're just wonderful people.
They do a lot for others,
and they're so giving.
And your daughter, she also homeschools.
She homeschools, five kids.
The room where they homeschool,
it's a chaotic mess.
What are the land and climate
of Egypt like? Who remembers?
[Sara] We didn't want a life
where we had kids
and then worked 40, 50 hours a week
and didn't ever see them.
So when our oldest was entering
third grade, we decided to bring her home.
And we've homeschooled
all of the rest after that.
So now we see each other all the time,
but we like it.
[Eric] She's got such patience,
to be a teacher
and to be a mom in the same house,
to impart values in a fun way
that the kids look forward to doing it.
-[upbeat music playing]
-[indistinct chatter]
[Erik] Watch yourselves.
-Fresh paint, fresh carpet.
-[Paige] Okay, be careful.
-Careful. There's staples and everything.
-[Erik] Lot of things going on. Beautiful.
Nice! Oh, my God, that looks so good.
Right? I just can't believe
that two of them shared this room.
-Can you believe it?
-It's wild.
[Danielle] This looks so cool!
Yeah, this is driving me crazy.
-Are you stressed? How can I help?
-I'm a little stressed.
Um, you wanna hold?
We decided to put these dividers up
-because it helps to bring some warmth.
-Yes!
It also looks
really similar to the floors.
-Yes!
-And then it gives it a different feel.
I like it a lot.
-I can actually screw stuff.
-[Adair] You can screw stuff?
-Well, let me take that back.
-I'm like I'm like, "Wait."
I did do this one time,
'cause you know I'm a theater girl,
and I screwed
somebody's finger by accident.
-So maybe not.
-Yeah. I'll just hold it up.
["Make Some Noize" by Clooney playing]
Everybody get up
Come on and give them some love ♪
[Paige] To put it in the simplest terms,
Erik and I created a schoolhouse,
but we were having
a lot of trouble in the warehouse
figuring out how we were gonna
get it into the backyard.
[Erik] We've talked about the schoolhouse.
This is the pitch of the Davis' driveway.
You created this area specifically
[Erik] Specifically to run the test
to see if we can actually
get the schoolhouse down the driveway.
We've created a prop schoolhouse
that's the same size and dimensions,
same weight as the schoolhouse.
We have it on the trailer
that we're going to use
to transport the actual schoolhouse
to the site.
-[Nick] Cool.
-Okay!
[Erik] All right. Let's do it.
[dramatic music playing]
-[Erik] You're on track.
-[Nick] We're good! We're fine!
-[Erik] Easy, easy, easy.
-[Adair] Okay. All right. Slow.
-Slow.
-[Nick] Yep.
[Erik] Keep coming. Keep coming.
Push it, push it, push it.
-Whoa, whoa, whoa!
-[all exclaim]
[Erik] Bring it back.
This is exactly what I was afraid of.
[Adair] What else can we do?
[Erik sighs]
The forklift is our next best option.
Be careful.
[Nick] It could work
if you angle it enough.
-[Erik] Yup. Take your time.
-[Nick] I just don't know if Oh!
-[Erik] Nice and slow.
-[Nick] Yeah! Look, there we go!
[suspenseful music playing]
[Nick] That thing's
20 feet off the ground.
-[Paige] I'm holding my breath.
-[Nick] Yeah. Yeah.
[all exclaiming]
[Erik] Oh
There's too much forward weight
on the forks,
so as he started to come down the pitch,
it just tumbled right off.
That means back to the drawing boards
and figure out what the next solution is,
because, at the moment, I don't have one.
I was hoping that would work.
-[tense music playing]
-[clock ticking]
[Erik] All right. Come on.
Erik has come up with the brilliant idea
[dramatic music playing]
of taking the structure and craning it
over the house into the backyard.
And my biggest concern is that, like,
if the wind picks up,
we're gonna be in a lot of trouble.
If this structure starts swinging,
we could hit electrical lines,
we could hit the house.
You could take out
everybody's power on the block.
Period.
Oh, my God. Erik, you are crazy.
How many feet in the air
do you think this is gonna go?
A lot of feet. The biggest issue
that we have facing us right now
is that when this is in the air,
there can be nobody underneath
this structure when it's moving.
'Cause Lord willing
and the creek don't rise,
if that thing does fall,
then we do have an issue.
So if you need me, I got you.
Because I can scream.
-I want your best theater scream.
-[loudly] Everybody!
-Gotta come from here.
-It's from the diaphragm.
This is my contribution.
-Projection, to the back of the house.
-[loudly] Everybody! Get out of the way!
-That was pretty good!
-I think that was pretty good.
They're not gonna
hear that over the crane, though.
[laughing] I will say this.
It is bigger than I expected it to be.
Oh, you think?
This thing looks like a carnival ride.
[Erik] All right! Hey, we got liftoff.
Oh, this is the exciting part.
[Paige] I'm sorry, I can't
I'm distracted by the amount of swinging
that's already happening.
-It's going like this.
-[Erik] It is swinging. It is.
-[Danielle] If y'all hit Grandma's house
-Now, we're going off!
If y'all hit this house
Erik's loving this. Paige is stressed out.
I'm like
All right, hold on.
We're fully on top of the house right now.
-Oh, my God. We're gonna do it.
-[Danielle] Oh, my God!
-We need to say a prayer right now.
-[Paige and Erik laughing]
[Danielle] This is really
Like, with my two eyes, I am watching this
schoolhouse go over a freaking house.
Okay, I'm backing up a little bit.
Where's my construction hat at?
[Erik] Back it up a little,
maybe a couple of steps.
Oh, my God!
-[Erik] It's so good. It's so good.
-[Paige] Whoo! Yes! Oh, my God!
[Danielle] We're gonna be able to actually
physically touch this in two seconds.
-[Erik] Yep.
-[Adair] You guys! Holy crap!
[Erik] Come on! Come on! Come on!
[Danielle] We'll give it to you.
They didn't break the house
The house is still intact ♪
-[Erik exclaiming]
-[Danielle laughing]
-My God. That was intense.
-[Danielle exclaiming]
-Thank you.
-[uplifting music playing]
[sighs]
-Like
-Like, legit.
You literally
I did not think you could do this.
And you made it happen for me,
so thank you.
As moved as I am right now,
and we're having a moment
[laughing] We still gotta put a porch on,
a vestibule on, we gotta slide on.
-No more moments!
-[Erik] Time to get back to work.
["All Clear" by Invigilators playing]
So we just finished
this crazy crane business.
All of this, we've still got to do.
We have a whole house to decorate,
a schoolhouse to finish,
and an entire front yard to plant.
We made up some time with that crane,
but we're still 30 minutes behind.
We got work to do here. Do you hear me?
[Paige] Nick, what's next?
Is there any more miscanthus?
Here. Catch.
Good job.
I find that the annuals
do better closer to the edge.
Just so they don't get wrapped up
in the grasses.
-[Paige] Oh, good to know.
-Yep.
-[Nick] So, see this, Paige?
-Yeah.
This is the muhly grass.
It's got that nice purple-pink on it.
That's gonna be in this section.
-We gotta clear it out.
-Okay.
Oh, my gosh! This is amazing!
I need help. Stand right over here.
-All right? It's not too heavy.
-Okay. I think I can do this.
-Hold on, let me get my foot
-Watch the wall now.
-I got a splinter already.
-No way.
-I got a splinter already.
-No, come on.
-You didn't get a splinter. Just that
-Okay. Anyway, I'm ready.
Oh, shnike
[Benjamin] I sleep right there.
Levi sleeps right there sometimes,
and Judah sleeps right there.
I'm the messy one.
Yeah, he's the messy one.
-[Levi] That's me.
-[Benjamin] They both snore a lot.
[Levi] We all do. 'Cause we are men.
-[Adair] Okay, slide it in.
-Oh, my God.
-[Adair] Okay. You got that?
-Yeah, I got it.
I was checking to see if you had it.
-[Adair] I'mma shimmy it out.
-Okay.
[Adair] I'mma put the screws in
and I'mma get on to the next part.
-And we're good. We're golden.
-I think you are good. I believe in him.
Ha! You believe in me.
-I believe in Adair ♪
-Thank you.
That he's gonna get it done ♪
[dramatic music playing]
[Erik] We're gonna get the pod up here.
I wanna get this done.
We need to move on to the next thing.
We have to attach the slide.
[Erik] Say, yay. A little bit more.
Watch your hand, Aaron.
-Yep.
-[Aaron] That's it!
Beautiful.
[upbeat music playing]
-[woman] Are they ready?
-They have to be ready.
All right,
remember the walls are still wet in here.
-[man] Gotcha. Yeah.
-Away from the wall for now.
-Let me know if I'm moving too fast.
-[upbeat music continues]
I almost twisted my ankle.
All right, boys. Let's move it in.
I'm so excited.
Look at how cool this looks!
[Erik] Do it, man. Pull it up.
[Paige] Y'all got it?
[man] Kinda. Okay.
[Erik] Get that corner in.
Yeah. Watch your fingers.
We're a little off-center down here, Erik.
[Erik] That's all right.
We'll get the top in first.
[man] Hold on, boys.
Let us get all situated.
-[Erik] Are we lined up on that wall? Ah!
-[Paige] Erik.
We're pushing up against the wall
right here on the edge of the slide.
-[Erik] I know it.
-Did we cut the holes right?
I mean, we cut 'em as right as we could
when we were dry fitting it.
Sometimes things don't line up
the exact same way.
[nervously] Great.
[Erik] We'll get it there,
we just need a minute.
[drill whirring]
[Paige] Hurry up, Erik.
-Are you sure this isn't upside down?
-Yup.
Awesome.
It will go in. I'm just worried
about the alignment on the interior.
