Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent (2024) s01e02 Episode Script
Good Neighbours
[NARRATOR]: In Toronto's war on crime,
the worst offenders are
pursued by the detectives
of the specialized criminal
investigations unit.
These are their stories.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
I hope we didn't keep
you waiting too long.
All's well that ends well.
I can arrange a security detail
- to accompany you in transit.
- Nope, that won't be necessary.
I can only account for your safety here.
Once you step outside those doors
Thank you.
[SOFT TENSE MUSIC]
Patient's left pupil is dilated.
Severe nausea. Sending
him for a CT scan,
just wanted your input first.
Don't send him until I've
had a chance to assess.
I'll stop by in the hour, okay?
Dr. Embers? There's
someone here to see you.
Says he's your brother.
[MAN]: What'd I just say?
I'm fine where I am, okay?!
I don't need to sit down!
Dennis.
Whoa. Dennis.
What are you doing here? Are you okay?
I'm fine. I'm fine.
Dennis.
I have been worried about you.
You haven't answered my calls.
Can we talk, just us, somewhere?
Yes. Yes, please.
[FIREWORKS BLASTING]
[SOFT PIANO MELODY]
[KNOCKING]
[SIGHS]
[AGGRESSIVE KNOCKING]
- What is going on?
- Dennis, we've had enough.
- You can't just walk
- You need to hear us out.
- Okay, is this about next week?
- Why else would we be here?
You got it all wrong. Just
give me a minute to explain.
Not unless you've changed your mind.
Actually, I wanted to
talk to you about that.
Why don't you just sit down,
I'll grab you a drink, okay?
Hun, get out here!
What's taking so long?
Seconds away.
[FIREWORKS BLASTING]
[LOUD POPPING MIXED
WITH FIREWORK BLASTS]
- Did you hear that?
- It's just the fireworks,
which you're gonna miss, so hurry up!
Never rush a martini!
[CHUCKLING]
- Oh my God.
- Oh!
Oh my God. Here, here.
Here, here, take [STAMMERING]
Where is my phone?!
[THEME MUSIC]
- [CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKING]
- Dennis Embers,
owner of the unit. Over
here we have Harold Chen.
In the kitchen, we got Derek Kapoor.
And out here on the
balcony, we got Amanda Green.
All tenants in this building.
We count 15 shell
casings. 9 millimetres.
No weapon has been located.
No forced entry on the door.
Any witnesses?
None, and surveillance is limited.
But, you know, we'll
get the footage soon.
Thanks, Riley. First up is Dennis.
Closest to the entry.
Two shots to the chest.
The shooter had him
backed into a corner.
The shooter had complete
control of that situation.
Like shooting fish in
a barrel. But then
We're looking at many more fish.
Three targets.
Open space, multiple obstructions.
Shooter starts losing
control of the situation.
Spraying bullets, it's chaos.
So they all ran for cover.
A final victim, Amanda,
shot in the doorway,
stumbles outside. The subject follows,
shoots her in the back three times.
The subject was a terrible shot.
He nearly took out the baby grand.
[DISSONANT PIANO NOTE]
Does that sound off to you?
I spotted a cochlear implant on Dennis.
- Maybe it was that?
- Unlikely.
Those implants amplify
pitch rather than distort it.
Any signs of robbery?
No sign the shooter went
through Dennis' belongings, no.
And all the victims still
have their wallets, jewelry.
Including this.
- [RILEY]: Hi, what do you got?
- Gold face?
Swiss movement. Handcrafted.
By far the most expensive
thing in the place.
So if it wasn't a robbery,
why did the shooter target these four?
Graff, Bateman?
One of my officers just
spoke to the neighbour.
Turns out all four of
our victims were members
of the condo board. Maybe
our shooter held a grudge?
A recent eviction?
How many people on the board?
Nine in total. That leaves five.
If I wanted to wipe out my condo board,
I'd turn up to a scheduled meeting
and take them all out at once.
[DOOR BUZZING]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
Last night, Amanda and
I were planning on going
to see Dennis together. Then Oh.
Then I got called in last minute
to babysit our granddaughter.
Why were you visiting Dennis?
We wanted to change
his mind about the sale.
Of his condo?
Of all of our units.
A developer, Pinecorp,
they want to buy our entire building,
but they need the unanimous
vote of all the condo owners
for the deal to go through.
And Dennis didn't want to sell.
Amanda and I didn't want
to sell either, but
but then Pinecorp raised the offer,
they started sending us gifts
Like that watch here.
I saw one just like it in Dennis' unit.
Well, eventually, we
decided to go for it.
Um, we were
We were going to use the money to, um
to buy a farm in Caledon.
But Dennis was immovable.
He said he'd oppose the sale,
and the vote's next week.
So your wife went to appeal to him,
convince him to change his mind.
Why were Harold and Derek with her?
They're board members.
They also wanted to sell.
Everyone was in. Except for Dennis.
And who else knew about
this meeting last night?
Just the four of us.
Don't you mean the five
of you, including Dennis?
No.
Dennis had no idea we were coming over.
He'd been avoiding us for weeks.
The motive for killing Dennis is clear.
Somebody wants him gone to
allow the deal to go through.
But Dennis didn't expect a visit
from his three neighbours last night.
He was caught off guard.
What is the shooter was too?
So you think these three
were in the wrong place
- at the wrong time?
- We do.
Look at how each of
the victims was killed.
Subject shoots Dennis
twice in the chest.
It's efficient, clean.
Dennis drops to the ground,
revealing three witnesses
further back in his condo.
Shooter panics, sprays
them all with bullets,
the shots become much less accurate.
So in order to catch
whoever killed all four,
we need to focus on the
real target: Dennis Embers.
It's an old building.
I only have security feeds
of the lobby and garage.
Anyone catch your eye?
Everyone who went in
and out of the condo
during the shooting are
residents of the building.
So either the shooter
lives in the building,
or he used an entrance that
isn't under surveillance.
Which would be the
back service entrance.
No cameras there.
But I did find this on the lobby camera,
11:18 AM yesterday.
Everyone on surveillance
was either a resident
or buzzed in, except
Only visitor who didn't get
buzzed into the building.
We lose him inside until
he slips out eight minutes later.
But the timing doesn't
match the murders.
Can you run this through
facial recognition?
I already did. No hits.
He's not a convicted criminal.
Maybe he's a late bloomer.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
How could this happen?
I recognized the family resemblance.
You two seemed quite close.
Camp Rosseau.
I was a counsellor when he was a camper.
Can't believe Dennis kept all these.
Dr. Embers, did Dennis ever mention
a company called Pinecorp to you?
Yes, he told me about their offer.
He said he would never sell to them.
Any reason why?
It was our childhood home.
Our mom died when we were
in our twenties, and
I guess the condo
reminded Dennis of her.
So your mother bequeathed the unit
to just Dennis, not to the both of you?
I was a neurology resident,
I already owned a house.
It was her way of
balancing out the scales.
Dennis needed a lot of help.
Did Dennis ever settle into a career?
Well, he worked at a concert hall,
and then at a music
store, but he struggled
financially, emotionally.
For a while, he was in
a good, stable place.
A few months ago, he
started acting different.
He retreated, stopped
answering my calls.
- Any idea why the change?
- No.
But yesterday, he came in
here, asking me for cash.
I was worried about him.
But when I tried to get him
seen by a physician, he lost it.
Security had to take him outside.
Did he mention what he
needed the money for?
[PA ANNOUNCEMENT]:
Code blue, room 3-0-4.
- Code blue, room 3-0-4.
- Oh, that's me, I'm sorry.
Oh, here. If you think of anything else,
don't hesitate.
Thank you.
Mark just got access
to the condo intercom.
One person buzzed into
Dennis' unit yesterday.
Pravat Doshi. Project
Manager of Pinecorp.
I was making my final
pitch to Dennis for why
he should see to us. I mean, I was
- begging him to take the deal.
- But Dennis wouldn't sell.
No, I mean, he had this
whole thing about it
being in the family for decades,
and it was like a whole sob story.
And you thought money
would change his mind?
Look, it's hard to cry
when you're in a Ferrari.
So now with Dennis out of the picture,
looks like the deal will go through.
Are you relieved about that?
I'm devastated.
- [BATEMAN SCOFFS]
- And how was his mood,
his demeanour, the
last time you saw him?
Anything out of the ordinary?
No, about the same.
Oh, his girlfriend did barge
in on us in the meeting.
Yeah, she was a bit stressed.
I just can't believe someone would
I'm sorry, this is just a
lot to take in right now.
Eden.
How long were you two in a relationship?
Two years. He ended things last month.
And why did you break up?
It was so strange.
Around three months ago,
Dennis started complaining
about hearing this
high-pitched noise in his condo,
but I was over there a lot
and I never heard anything.
Dennis wore a cochlear implant, correct?
Could it have been malfunctioning?
I went with him to get it
checked out at the doctor,
and they said it was working perfectly.
They thought the problem
was maybe psychological.
Was Dennis suffering from delusions?
I got really bad. He
wasn't himself anymore.
And then he just he ended things.
And why were you at his
place the day he died?
He said he wanted to try again,
so I went to hear him out.
You said that, um,
Dennis started hearing the
noises inside his condo.
Did he ever hear them anywhere else?
Actually, no.
He only heard them when he was home.
[DISSONANT PIANO MELODY]
Why would Dennis's piano be
tuned down three semitones?
Oh, forgive me, but I'd
argue that most pianos
in the real word are
not perfectly tuned.
Yeah, but maybe he did it
on purpose to compensate
for the high-pitched
noise he was hearing.
The sonic equivalent of
adding sugar to bitter coffee.
So, you think the noise was
real. And was Eden lying?
No, she just couldn't hear it,
like we can't hear it right now.
Doesn't mean it's not real.
- Who are you calling?
- Mark.
We're just gonna need to
source a spectrum analyzer
so we can measure the sound frequencies.
Well, or
we could just use this.
My sound app.
Wow.
That's an impossibly
high-pitched noise.
But I can't hear anything.
Neither do I.
Normally, you'd have to be under
20 to hear something like that.
Presbycusis. As we age, the
small hairs in our inner ear
become damaged, then
we're no longer able
to hear anything above 12 kilohertz.
But Dennis wore a cochlear implant.
Yeah, which bypasses that
part of the inner ear,
transmitting directly
into the auditory nerve.
Which is why Dennis could
hear it and no one else could.
[STATIC FROM SOUND APP]
What have we got here?
- [HIGH-PITCHED SCREECH]
- Okay.
[SCREECHING STOPS]
Was that what Dennis was hearing?
Even worse, if you can imagine.
How hard is it to get
your hands on one of these?
Pretty easy. Hundreds
of convenience stores
use them to deter loitering teenagers.
They still have young enough
ears to hear 17 kilohertz.
So this machine was on non-stop,
emitting a high-pitch screech
that only Dennis could hear.
Oh, that's torture.
Yeah. Whoever planted it
wanted to push Dennis
out of the building.
- Mm-hmm.
- Dennis didn't want to leave
so easily. Eden said he first started
hearing the noise three months ago.
Meaning that whoever did this
could also be our shooter.
Maybe they got impatient
waiting for Dennis to break
and took a more direct
approach. Thank you.
All 38 residents in that building
would've wanted Dennis out.
He was the only thing standing
in their way of making millions.
Mmm. We need to shrink our suspect pool.
Dennis had a weight-bearing
post installed
in his living room.
The roof above his unit had cracked.
I put a call out for the building's
maintenance records to
find out who installed it.
Yep, they could've
also planted the device.
They definitely would've
had access to Dennis' condo.
They're not the only
ones who had access.
Just got the blueprints from the condo.
That heating vent connects
to several other units,
but only one of them belongs
to the head of the condo board,
Jessica Lewis.
My daughter and I have been
living here since she was born.
And with the dog, we need more space.
Look, I get it. I would love to move
- into a bigger place with my kid.
- Right?
The money from the
sale would've meant
That you could've moved.
And Dennis was standing
in the way of that?
So you plant a device in his unit
to torture him until he leaves
the building. That's nice.
I'm sorry.
I feel bad about it now. I do.
How did you know the
device would trigger Dennis?
The grocery store down
the block uses them.
Dennis complained to me once about it.
I filed it away, I guess.
Now, the wiring for the machine,
it was no small feat to install.
Did you have any help?
What do you mean?
What's his name? I love animals.
- [CHUCKLES NERVOUSLY]
- Duke.
Hello, Duke.
Hey, you.
Oh, your daughter must really love him.
Uh-huh.
The only drawback is
the shedding, right?
I guess you get use to it.
Pravat from Pinecorp certainly did.
He must like you a lot.
You and Duke.
Jessica and I have been seeing
each other for a year now.
After a few dates, I realized
her building was a dump
sitting on a gold mine,
so Pinecorp made an offer.
A deliriously generous
offer, I might add.
Like [CLICKS TONGUE]
But you hit a roadblock when Dennis said
he'd vote against the sale.
Why should one man stand
in the way of everyone
- getting rich, hmm?
- Hmm.
I merely suggested
to Jessica that she
find a way to help persuade
Dennis to leave the building.
But the plan didn't work.
Dennis endured three excruciating months
of that noise. And now,
with the vote on the sale
coming up in a matter of days,
you're under pressure to save the deal.
You're wrong, by the
way. It did work. Okay?
Just last week, Dennis snapped.
He couldn't take the noise anymore.
He came by here to make the deal.
He said he'd vote for the
sale of the building if I
you know, gave him a signing bonus.
Just check the security
cameras. He was here. Okay?
So the morning you visited Dennis
I was delivering the money. 200K.
He's not a very good negotiator.
I'd have easily tripled
it, but he was in a rush.
So, why did you lie to us earlier?
Uh Okay, um
Pinecorp is a publicly traded company.
And, um, I
I would lose my job if anybody found out
that I was I was handing out
I think the word you're
looking for is "bribes".
We'll be in touch.
There was no trace of
the money at Dennis'.
But he did have one
other visitor that day.
Eden.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
- Can you pop the trunk?
- Sure.
Eden Turner?
You're packing pretty light
for a trip to Cambodia.
- I'm impressed.
- I'm surprised
you're still going
without your boyfriend.
Dennis was booked on
the seat next to yours.
[CAR LOCK CHIRPS]
Jessica Lewis?
You're the head of
the condo board, right?
I'm sorry, do I know you?
Carl Embers. I'm Dennis' brother.
I'm so sorry.
I heard you're still
pushing through the vote
to sell the building.
I just wanted to let you
know that I plan to honour
my brother's wishes to keep
the apartment in the family
and will be voting against the sale.
Well, it's all there.
I know how this looks. I do.
It looks like your boyfriend got killed
and you got caught fleeing the country
with a bag full of his money.
I don't know where to start.
Well, the truth is usually
easiest to remember.
Okay. [BREATHING RAPIDLY]
Dennis called me last
week to get back together.
He said he was about
to come into some money,
and he wanted us to leave
Toronto and start again.
In Cambodia. Known for
its beautiful beaches,
the ruins of Angkor Wat,
and I'm missing something.
No extradition treaty.
[SIGHS]
What was Dennis running from?
He wouldn't say. The
day that he was killed,
I went to his place to pick up
the money. He was paranoid.
He thought that security
would stop him at the airport,
so he asked me to hide
the cash in my luggage.
So then, why go through
with his plan once he's gone?
Because I'm terrified.
Dennis was running from someone.
He comes into money and
then he ends up dead?
That can't be a coincidence.
If Dennis' death had anything
to do with this money,
I didn't want to wait
around and find out.
Alright, let's say that
Eden didn't kill him.
Why was Dennis running
in the first place?
Why was he in such a rush?
Well, that's where
it falls apart, right?
If I was Dennis and I
wanted to leave town,
I'd sell the condo and wait
for the deal to be closed,
you know? Then I'd take
off with my millions
from the sale rather
than two hundred thousand.
But Dennis took whatever
he could get upfront.
Eden said he was running
away from someone.
Or something. Something
that could be found
in his unit after he left.
Now, these are work
logs from the building.
That weight-bearing
pole in his living room?
Maintenance never installed it.
So he put it in on his own?
Why would you go to all
that trouble yourself?
Maybe he didn't want
someone poking around
where they shouldn't.
Dennis knew what was causing
the roof above his unit
to collapse. Something heavy.
I'll put a team of forensics on standby.
Okay. So we are here,
right above Dennis's unit.
And that would place the column
under here.
Look at these azaleas. The
leaves are all curled and
the stems have a purple tinge.
That's the effects
of high alkaline soil.
Okay. Didn't know you had a green thumb.
We had a herb garden on
the balcony growing up.
There's many reasons
for high alkaline soil.
Lack of water.
Surplus calcium, or
concrete.
Looks like we hit bottom.
Maybe a false bottom.
That's a solid two feet off the ground.
Why?
When we removed the
earth, we found this.
The bottom two feet of the bed
were haphazardly filled with concrete.
Whoever did this was in a rush.
You see how the earth is fused
with the top layer of concrete?
They didn't wait long enough
for the concrete to dry
before shovelling the earth back on top.
How long would it have
taken someone to do this?
Approximately 10-12 hours.
Well, when you said you found something,
we were expecting a
little more than some dirt
stuck to concrete. No offence.
Rude. But fair.
I was saving the best for last.
Give us a minute.
Well, well, well.
I think we just found
what Dennis was hiding.
Dennis knew about this
body in the flowerbed.
He wanted it to remain buried.
That's why when the weight of
it caused his roof to crack,
he fixed it himself.
He didn't want anyone
coming to dig up his secret.
It also explains why
he didn't want to sell.
He knew if Pinecorp bought the building,
the body would be
unearthed in demolition.
But eventually he caved,
and planned to be in Cambodia
by the time this turned up.
Well, that didn't work out.
Questions still remains, though,
how does whoever's in there
connect with the shooting?
Maybe the shooter was
avenging the death of the body
in the concrete. Killed
Dennis as payback.
"Every block of stone
has a statue inside it,
and it's the task of the
sculptor to discover it."
Michelangelo had it easy.
We, on the other hand, do not.
The bones are fused with the concrete.
One wrong move and we
could shatter the skull,
along with the teeth that
we need for dental records.
Anything we can go from in the meantime?
Victim is female. 5'4".
X-ray found a helix
piercing in her right ear.
Judging from the state of decomposition,
she was killed about 20 years ago.
I know it's not a lot to go off of.
Actually, it might be all we need.
Okay.
This is from 20 years ago, 2003.
Work permits to reinstall
the fire escape on Dennis' building.
There is a note here on concrete repair.
That's how Dennis buried the body.
He didn't bring up the
equipment for the concrete
- because it was already there.
- What month is that?
- November.
- Okay, November 2003.
Missing persons.
Okay.
We got three women who match
the height of the deceased
found in the concrete.
But only one with the
same helix piercing.
Maeve Waters, 16.
I know that face.
Dennis' photo album.
Dennis knew Maeve from camp.
Dennis was Maeve's camp friend.
He was a godsend to her the one summer
she went to Camp Rosseau.
I cannot imagine that he would ever
want to hurt her.
All her letters home mentioned Dennis.
They bonded over their love of music.
Maeve played the violin
and he played the piano.
He was the only thing
she liked about camp.
Did you ever meet Dennis?
No. They lost touch once
the school year began.
I have no idea why she would've seen him
the night she went missing.
Well, Maeve was last seen
at a concert at Roy Thomson Hall.
Dennis worked there
part-time as an usher.
They must have run into each other.
Are these your daughter's photos?
They're incredible. Excellent eye.
Dynamic composition.
Well, anything she'd set her
mind to, she would master.
That's an expensive camera,
though, for a teenager.
I mean, back then, these
would have gone for
four or five grand.
Did she buy it herself?
It was a gift from a boyfriend, I think.
Is there any possibility that Dennis
gave the camera to
her? Were they dating?
I don't think so.
And do you know when she got the camera?
No.
September 2003.
That's about two months
before Maeve's disappearance.
You can see how the
images changed this month.
This is higher quality glass.
More bokeh, sharper depth of field,
- the mark of a great Leica.
- Sandra?
In here!
That's my husband.
Kenneth. I want you to meet
Detectives Graff and Bateman.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
My client won't be answering
any questions today.
You can show us as much
film as you'd like, though.
Well, we only have this one clip,
because the second time he
went back to the building,
he was armed, and went
through the back door
where there are no security cameras.
I have never been in the
same room as Dennis Embers.
- Kenneth, we discussed
- No. I have nothing to hide.
That was the only time I
set foot in the building.
I just wanted to talk to Dennis.
Just like you wanted
to talk to John Hucks,
Maeve's former English teacher?
He told me that back in
2004, you had a "conversation".
It ended with you breaking his nose.
I had a lot of anger the
years after Maeve disappeared.
John was far too
interested in my daughter,
so I talked to him and
I-I took things too far.
That's why this time, with Dennis,
I wanted to make sure
I got things right.
I just wanted information from him.
What made you think Dennis
had any information to give?
Last week, I got an email
from a random address.
It said Maeve's body was hidden
at 1220 Rosedale Valley Road.
When I looked up the
residence, I saw Dennis' name.
Maeve's old friend.
In the building her body is buried.
Couldn't have been a coincidence.
Why didn't you come to
us with this information?
These past 20 years,
I'd grab onto any theory
of what happened to Maeve.
I shared every shred with the police.
Over time, they stopped listening.
I had to make sure this was solid first.
You took your own road to get to us,
but now you're here.
If you really want help
catch Maeve's killer,
you can start by giving us that email.
The email sent to Kenneth was placed
on a scheduled-send
delay of nine minutes.
What good does a nine-minute delay do?
Not much, unless it was a mistake.
You think the sender meant
to schedule it for nine days
rather than nine minutes?
Nine days, weeks,
months, take your pick.
I was able to track
the sender's IP address:
789 Yonge Street.
Toronto Reference Library.
They have great events. What?
Well, your friends at TPL
just sent over the camera feed
from the time the email was sent.
Dennis.
Why would he sell himself out?
Yeah, thanks.
Da Silva just ruled Maeve
Waters' cause of death
as manual strangulation.
Hyoid bone was shattered.
Which would require
35 pounds of pressure.
Two hands around her neck.
Maeve was probably looking
at her killer when she died.
Most likely a crime of passion.
Just got off the phone
with Kenneth's alibi.
He was at his mother's retirement home
at the time of Dennis' murder.
He's not our condo shooter.
So we now have Dennis
for Maeve's murder,
but we've exhausted all our
suspects for the condo shooting.
Unless we've been
looking at this all wrong.
What if Dennis had help
burying Maeve's body?
Da Silva said he would have
taken Dennis up to 12 hours.
Even if he started the process at night,
it would have stretched into morning.
- Somebody could've spotted him.
- But if Dennis had help,
those 12 hours become six.
Work's done at night. No witnesses.
So, whoever helped
Dennis bury Maeve's body
is also our shooter?
It's possible. 20 years later,
Dennis develops a conscience,
tips off Maeve's father about the body.
If the accomplice
knew he was gonna talk,
maybe he'd wipe him out
before he said too much.
Okay. That's a start.
This time, try to come
back with a suspect
that doesn't have an alibi.
Those ones usually work better!
Direct from Camp Rosseau.
Over 500 photos from the summer of '03.
Now, if Dennis had a close friend,
you'd think they'd be captured
in the same frame together
at least once, but
he's only ever pictured
with Maeve or Carl, his brother.
It's Carl. With Dennis.
Look what's slung over his shoulder.
Maeve's camera.
The same camera she was
given by an ex-boyfriend.
Carl and Maeve were in a relationship.
Oh, Dr. Embers, a word?
It's about Tuesday night.
Hmm?
Um
During the emergency craniotomy,
you left before I finished the surgery.
I lost the patient.
The hospital is doing
an investigation, and
I'm sorry, but I'm gonna
have to let them know
that I don't know where
you were that night.
I was at the hospital the whole night.
- I can't lie to
- You lost a patient.
Welcome to medicine, it happens.
Now, you tell that lie to the board,
I will ensure that no
hospital will hire you
for the rest of your
insignificant career.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
So the Embers brothers
bury Maeve's body.
But which one killed her?
Strangulation isn't a team sport.
My bet's on Carl.
What's stopping Carl from
pinning it all on Dennis?
Dead men don't speak.
And they're terrible
at defending themselves.
Carl and Maeve dated briefly at camp.
She ended things. He's got motive.
Any defence lawyer worth their salt
will argue it would have
been impossible for Carl
to have killed Maeve all
the way from Montreal.
He was studying at McGill.
So he must've come home unexpectedly.
"Must have" is worlds
apart from "indisputable".
But let's set that aside for a moment.
So, Carl and Dennis are both complicit.
They bury Maeve's body on the roof.
Cut to this month,
Carl learns that Dennis
is gonna skip town
'cause he sold the condo,
which will unearth Carl's secret,
so he kills Dennis to inherit the condo
and keep the body buried. Am I close?
You're in the ballpark.
If you can prove Carl
is our condo shooter,
then the pieces also fall
into place with Maeve's murder.
Carl kills his younger brother
to cover up his past crimes.
But then you encounter
another road block.
Carl also has an alibi for
the night of the shooting.
He was on call at Harbourfront Memorial.
That alibi has to be fabricated.
Then pull at the seams.
[AMBULANCE SIREN BLARING]
Look I told the officers before, okay?
Dr. Embers was on call.
He was supervising me the whole night.
Even during the operation
where you lost a patient?
I made a mistake,
alright? It was my fault.
An emergency craniotomy.
Now wouldn't an operation of that scale
require a senior attending surgeon?
But when things went south,
Dr. Embers didn't step in.
Why? Because he wasn't there.
Hassan.
If you tell us the truth,
he'll be gone from your life.
He stepped out for
three hours that night.
And I'm sorry I didn't
say that before, but
Dr. Embers, he can
be so intimidating.
But whenever other people
are around, he just
he turns it off.
I feel like I'm losing my mind.
You're not. So how does he treat you
when no one else is around?
I just want to be clear.
We're agreeing to
sell Dennis' condo now?
Yeah. Get rid of it.
Well, you didn't have
to hire me to vote yes,
but I'm happy to take your money.
I told you what the police
found in Dennis' unit.
I'm sorry. It's it's awful.
It's for the best that it's torn down.
Vote is in an hour.
Are you sure? Perhaps
I don't know how much clearer
I need to be. Seriously.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
[CHILDREN LAUGHING IN THE DISTANCE]
Yep.
Thank you so much for your time.
I just got out of a deep dive
into Carl's time at McGill.
He was in residence at Douglas Hall.
- Was that your dorm?
- No. I was at McConnell.
But check out that article.
Okay. "Gas leak found at Douglas Hall.
All residents forced to evacuate."
One guess. What day did
they find that gas leak?
November 4th, the day of Maeve's murder.
Carl had to leave his residence.
I just talked to his
roommate from that year,
he remembers Carl getting on
the first train home to Toronto.
Placing him at the scene of the crime.
- Yep.
- Okay, here's what I got.
Dennis didn't have a cochlear implant
in any of these camp photos,
meaning he might not have been
born with a hearing impairment.
So I looked into his medical
records and found this.
Dennis was 16 when he got his implant
after suffering extreme
blunt head trauma.
He presented to the
ER with a cracked head
and broken arm. The doctor
on call suspected abuse.
Family Services were notified,
they investigated, but
they cleared the mother.
And you suspect it was Carl.
Look at how tense Carl's forearm
is across Dennis's shoulder.
He's not hugging him,
he's clamping down on him.
Although Dennis' mouth is smiling,
his eyes are terrified.
Sibling physical abuse.
Often overlooked, chalked
up to boys being boys.
I haven't gotten to the best part.
Look at the date of the X-ray.
[SCOFFS]
[DOOR BUZZING]
Thank you for coming down.
We just need your
signature on a few things
to release your brother's condo.
Take a seat.
Can I get you a coffee or anything?
No, just show me where to sign.
Oh, I wanted to give this back to you.
Oh, since we're in the process
of returning your property
Leica M6.
Maeve put your gift to good use.
She took some beautiful photographs.
Carl, it's okay.
We know that you and Maeve dated
and we know that you came
home the night she was killed.
It must've been awful.
You get off that train, you
walk in that door into what?
I can only imagine.
[SIGHS]
By the time I got there,
she was already gone.
And Dennis asked you to help him
bury the body on the roof?
Yeah. He was, uh
very scared.
And he didn't know what he had done
until it was
too late.
And he begged me to
to help him.
And he was my brother, you know?
My little brother.
Do you know how he killed her?
Mm-hmm. He said he strangled her.
Okay. That lines up.
We'll have to get a written statement.
Just one more question, um
I know it's not your field, but
I was hoping you could give
me help in reading this.
Dennis' X-ray. I'm no doctor, but
that looks to me like a clean break.
You know? [CHUCKLES]
Doesn't take a professional
to read the date.
September 1st, 2003.
Correct me if I'm wrong,
but wouldn't the treatment
for a severe radius fracture
be to put the arm in a cast
for at least four months?
It would be impossible for
him to have strangled Maeve,
wouldn't it, doctor?
I think you may have
got some details wrong
about the night Maeve was killed.
How about we start
again from the top?
November 4th.
While you're on a train home to Toronto,
your brother's running into
your ex-girlfriend at a concert.
They were good friends at camp,
but that night, they hit it off.
Went back to the condo.
And later, you do walk in on them,
but Maeve was very much alive.
And judging by what happened next,
let me guess, they were in bed together.
[GRAFF SIGHS]
Your little brother
with your ex-girlfriend,
the girl who dumped you.
That must've been so humiliating.
She didn't stand a chance.
And then you force your
brother to help bury her body.
[CLEARS THROAT]
None of this is true, so I'm done here.
Um, next time you want to talk to me,
my lawyer will be present.
Your lawyer can talk to you in holding.
After the admission you just gave,
we have enough to take you in.
- I haven't admitted anything.
- Actually, you did.
But you were so caught
up in self-preservation,
you failed to notice.
We have you on record
admitting to helping
bury a body. That's accessory
after the fact to murder.
Oh, I can hear your lawyer's
closing remarks right now.
Yeah, they'll play up your
character as a defence.
How after Maeve's death,
you became a changed man,
you went into medicine as penance.
You devoted your life to helping others.
You swore the Hippocratic oath.
You became Dr. Embers.
You got the stunning
house, the loving wife,
and two adorable girls.
You had made the perfect world.
Until Dennis decided to destroy it.
Unless you killed Dennis,
you would inherit the condo.
You could block the deal yourself.
Because if you didn't,
your life would be obliterated.
Your family.
Your work.
Such important work.
Just this week alone,
you saved four lives.
But also this week, you took four lives.
Four innocent lives.
After you killed your brother,
you murdered Derek Kapoor.
He just got married last month.
Harold Chen. He was his parents'
caregiver for eight years.
And Amanda Green.
She just became a grandmother.
You didn't know they were
gonna be there, did you, doctor?
[SIGHS]
I
I just wanted Dennis.
But they saw my face
and it was too late.
I didn't know what else to do.
You didn't know what else to do?
How about, "First, do no harm"?
Sometimes, the dead do speak.
[THEME MUSIC]
the worst offenders are
pursued by the detectives
of the specialized criminal
investigations unit.
These are their stories.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
I hope we didn't keep
you waiting too long.
All's well that ends well.
I can arrange a security detail
- to accompany you in transit.
- Nope, that won't be necessary.
I can only account for your safety here.
Once you step outside those doors
Thank you.
[SOFT TENSE MUSIC]
Patient's left pupil is dilated.
Severe nausea. Sending
him for a CT scan,
just wanted your input first.
Don't send him until I've
had a chance to assess.
I'll stop by in the hour, okay?
Dr. Embers? There's
someone here to see you.
Says he's your brother.
[MAN]: What'd I just say?
I'm fine where I am, okay?!
I don't need to sit down!
Dennis.
Whoa. Dennis.
What are you doing here? Are you okay?
I'm fine. I'm fine.
Dennis.
I have been worried about you.
You haven't answered my calls.
Can we talk, just us, somewhere?
Yes. Yes, please.
[FIREWORKS BLASTING]
[SOFT PIANO MELODY]
[KNOCKING]
[SIGHS]
[AGGRESSIVE KNOCKING]
- What is going on?
- Dennis, we've had enough.
- You can't just walk
- You need to hear us out.
- Okay, is this about next week?
- Why else would we be here?
You got it all wrong. Just
give me a minute to explain.
Not unless you've changed your mind.
Actually, I wanted to
talk to you about that.
Why don't you just sit down,
I'll grab you a drink, okay?
Hun, get out here!
What's taking so long?
Seconds away.
[FIREWORKS BLASTING]
[LOUD POPPING MIXED
WITH FIREWORK BLASTS]
- Did you hear that?
- It's just the fireworks,
which you're gonna miss, so hurry up!
Never rush a martini!
[CHUCKLING]
- Oh my God.
- Oh!
Oh my God. Here, here.
Here, here, take [STAMMERING]
Where is my phone?!
[THEME MUSIC]
- [CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKING]
- Dennis Embers,
owner of the unit. Over
here we have Harold Chen.
In the kitchen, we got Derek Kapoor.
And out here on the
balcony, we got Amanda Green.
All tenants in this building.
We count 15 shell
casings. 9 millimetres.
No weapon has been located.
No forced entry on the door.
Any witnesses?
None, and surveillance is limited.
But, you know, we'll
get the footage soon.
Thanks, Riley. First up is Dennis.
Closest to the entry.
Two shots to the chest.
The shooter had him
backed into a corner.
The shooter had complete
control of that situation.
Like shooting fish in
a barrel. But then
We're looking at many more fish.
Three targets.
Open space, multiple obstructions.
Shooter starts losing
control of the situation.
Spraying bullets, it's chaos.
So they all ran for cover.
A final victim, Amanda,
shot in the doorway,
stumbles outside. The subject follows,
shoots her in the back three times.
The subject was a terrible shot.
He nearly took out the baby grand.
[DISSONANT PIANO NOTE]
Does that sound off to you?
I spotted a cochlear implant on Dennis.
- Maybe it was that?
- Unlikely.
Those implants amplify
pitch rather than distort it.
Any signs of robbery?
No sign the shooter went
through Dennis' belongings, no.
And all the victims still
have their wallets, jewelry.
Including this.
- [RILEY]: Hi, what do you got?
- Gold face?
Swiss movement. Handcrafted.
By far the most expensive
thing in the place.
So if it wasn't a robbery,
why did the shooter target these four?
Graff, Bateman?
One of my officers just
spoke to the neighbour.
Turns out all four of
our victims were members
of the condo board. Maybe
our shooter held a grudge?
A recent eviction?
How many people on the board?
Nine in total. That leaves five.
If I wanted to wipe out my condo board,
I'd turn up to a scheduled meeting
and take them all out at once.
[DOOR BUZZING]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
Last night, Amanda and
I were planning on going
to see Dennis together. Then Oh.
Then I got called in last minute
to babysit our granddaughter.
Why were you visiting Dennis?
We wanted to change
his mind about the sale.
Of his condo?
Of all of our units.
A developer, Pinecorp,
they want to buy our entire building,
but they need the unanimous
vote of all the condo owners
for the deal to go through.
And Dennis didn't want to sell.
Amanda and I didn't want
to sell either, but
but then Pinecorp raised the offer,
they started sending us gifts
Like that watch here.
I saw one just like it in Dennis' unit.
Well, eventually, we
decided to go for it.
Um, we were
We were going to use the money to, um
to buy a farm in Caledon.
But Dennis was immovable.
He said he'd oppose the sale,
and the vote's next week.
So your wife went to appeal to him,
convince him to change his mind.
Why were Harold and Derek with her?
They're board members.
They also wanted to sell.
Everyone was in. Except for Dennis.
And who else knew about
this meeting last night?
Just the four of us.
Don't you mean the five
of you, including Dennis?
No.
Dennis had no idea we were coming over.
He'd been avoiding us for weeks.
The motive for killing Dennis is clear.
Somebody wants him gone to
allow the deal to go through.
But Dennis didn't expect a visit
from his three neighbours last night.
He was caught off guard.
What is the shooter was too?
So you think these three
were in the wrong place
- at the wrong time?
- We do.
Look at how each of
the victims was killed.
Subject shoots Dennis
twice in the chest.
It's efficient, clean.
Dennis drops to the ground,
revealing three witnesses
further back in his condo.
Shooter panics, sprays
them all with bullets,
the shots become much less accurate.
So in order to catch
whoever killed all four,
we need to focus on the
real target: Dennis Embers.
It's an old building.
I only have security feeds
of the lobby and garage.
Anyone catch your eye?
Everyone who went in
and out of the condo
during the shooting are
residents of the building.
So either the shooter
lives in the building,
or he used an entrance that
isn't under surveillance.
Which would be the
back service entrance.
No cameras there.
But I did find this on the lobby camera,
11:18 AM yesterday.
Everyone on surveillance
was either a resident
or buzzed in, except
Only visitor who didn't get
buzzed into the building.
We lose him inside until
he slips out eight minutes later.
But the timing doesn't
match the murders.
Can you run this through
facial recognition?
I already did. No hits.
He's not a convicted criminal.
Maybe he's a late bloomer.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
How could this happen?
I recognized the family resemblance.
You two seemed quite close.
Camp Rosseau.
I was a counsellor when he was a camper.
Can't believe Dennis kept all these.
Dr. Embers, did Dennis ever mention
a company called Pinecorp to you?
Yes, he told me about their offer.
He said he would never sell to them.
Any reason why?
It was our childhood home.
Our mom died when we were
in our twenties, and
I guess the condo
reminded Dennis of her.
So your mother bequeathed the unit
to just Dennis, not to the both of you?
I was a neurology resident,
I already owned a house.
It was her way of
balancing out the scales.
Dennis needed a lot of help.
Did Dennis ever settle into a career?
Well, he worked at a concert hall,
and then at a music
store, but he struggled
financially, emotionally.
For a while, he was in
a good, stable place.
A few months ago, he
started acting different.
He retreated, stopped
answering my calls.
- Any idea why the change?
- No.
But yesterday, he came in
here, asking me for cash.
I was worried about him.
But when I tried to get him
seen by a physician, he lost it.
Security had to take him outside.
Did he mention what he
needed the money for?
[PA ANNOUNCEMENT]:
Code blue, room 3-0-4.
- Code blue, room 3-0-4.
- Oh, that's me, I'm sorry.
Oh, here. If you think of anything else,
don't hesitate.
Thank you.
Mark just got access
to the condo intercom.
One person buzzed into
Dennis' unit yesterday.
Pravat Doshi. Project
Manager of Pinecorp.
I was making my final
pitch to Dennis for why
he should see to us. I mean, I was
- begging him to take the deal.
- But Dennis wouldn't sell.
No, I mean, he had this
whole thing about it
being in the family for decades,
and it was like a whole sob story.
And you thought money
would change his mind?
Look, it's hard to cry
when you're in a Ferrari.
So now with Dennis out of the picture,
looks like the deal will go through.
Are you relieved about that?
I'm devastated.
- [BATEMAN SCOFFS]
- And how was his mood,
his demeanour, the
last time you saw him?
Anything out of the ordinary?
No, about the same.
Oh, his girlfriend did barge
in on us in the meeting.
Yeah, she was a bit stressed.
I just can't believe someone would
I'm sorry, this is just a
lot to take in right now.
Eden.
How long were you two in a relationship?
Two years. He ended things last month.
And why did you break up?
It was so strange.
Around three months ago,
Dennis started complaining
about hearing this
high-pitched noise in his condo,
but I was over there a lot
and I never heard anything.
Dennis wore a cochlear implant, correct?
Could it have been malfunctioning?
I went with him to get it
checked out at the doctor,
and they said it was working perfectly.
They thought the problem
was maybe psychological.
Was Dennis suffering from delusions?
I got really bad. He
wasn't himself anymore.
And then he just he ended things.
And why were you at his
place the day he died?
He said he wanted to try again,
so I went to hear him out.
You said that, um,
Dennis started hearing the
noises inside his condo.
Did he ever hear them anywhere else?
Actually, no.
He only heard them when he was home.
[DISSONANT PIANO MELODY]
Why would Dennis's piano be
tuned down three semitones?
Oh, forgive me, but I'd
argue that most pianos
in the real word are
not perfectly tuned.
Yeah, but maybe he did it
on purpose to compensate
for the high-pitched
noise he was hearing.
The sonic equivalent of
adding sugar to bitter coffee.
So, you think the noise was
real. And was Eden lying?
No, she just couldn't hear it,
like we can't hear it right now.
Doesn't mean it's not real.
- Who are you calling?
- Mark.
We're just gonna need to
source a spectrum analyzer
so we can measure the sound frequencies.
Well, or
we could just use this.
My sound app.
Wow.
That's an impossibly
high-pitched noise.
But I can't hear anything.
Neither do I.
Normally, you'd have to be under
20 to hear something like that.
Presbycusis. As we age, the
small hairs in our inner ear
become damaged, then
we're no longer able
to hear anything above 12 kilohertz.
But Dennis wore a cochlear implant.
Yeah, which bypasses that
part of the inner ear,
transmitting directly
into the auditory nerve.
Which is why Dennis could
hear it and no one else could.
[STATIC FROM SOUND APP]
What have we got here?
- [HIGH-PITCHED SCREECH]
- Okay.
[SCREECHING STOPS]
Was that what Dennis was hearing?
Even worse, if you can imagine.
How hard is it to get
your hands on one of these?
Pretty easy. Hundreds
of convenience stores
use them to deter loitering teenagers.
They still have young enough
ears to hear 17 kilohertz.
So this machine was on non-stop,
emitting a high-pitch screech
that only Dennis could hear.
Oh, that's torture.
Yeah. Whoever planted it
wanted to push Dennis
out of the building.
- Mm-hmm.
- Dennis didn't want to leave
so easily. Eden said he first started
hearing the noise three months ago.
Meaning that whoever did this
could also be our shooter.
Maybe they got impatient
waiting for Dennis to break
and took a more direct
approach. Thank you.
All 38 residents in that building
would've wanted Dennis out.
He was the only thing standing
in their way of making millions.
Mmm. We need to shrink our suspect pool.
Dennis had a weight-bearing
post installed
in his living room.
The roof above his unit had cracked.
I put a call out for the building's
maintenance records to
find out who installed it.
Yep, they could've
also planted the device.
They definitely would've
had access to Dennis' condo.
They're not the only
ones who had access.
Just got the blueprints from the condo.
That heating vent connects
to several other units,
but only one of them belongs
to the head of the condo board,
Jessica Lewis.
My daughter and I have been
living here since she was born.
And with the dog, we need more space.
Look, I get it. I would love to move
- into a bigger place with my kid.
- Right?
The money from the
sale would've meant
That you could've moved.
And Dennis was standing
in the way of that?
So you plant a device in his unit
to torture him until he leaves
the building. That's nice.
I'm sorry.
I feel bad about it now. I do.
How did you know the
device would trigger Dennis?
The grocery store down
the block uses them.
Dennis complained to me once about it.
I filed it away, I guess.
Now, the wiring for the machine,
it was no small feat to install.
Did you have any help?
What do you mean?
What's his name? I love animals.
- [CHUCKLES NERVOUSLY]
- Duke.
Hello, Duke.
Hey, you.
Oh, your daughter must really love him.
Uh-huh.
The only drawback is
the shedding, right?
I guess you get use to it.
Pravat from Pinecorp certainly did.
He must like you a lot.
You and Duke.
Jessica and I have been seeing
each other for a year now.
After a few dates, I realized
her building was a dump
sitting on a gold mine,
so Pinecorp made an offer.
A deliriously generous
offer, I might add.
Like [CLICKS TONGUE]
But you hit a roadblock when Dennis said
he'd vote against the sale.
Why should one man stand
in the way of everyone
- getting rich, hmm?
- Hmm.
I merely suggested
to Jessica that she
find a way to help persuade
Dennis to leave the building.
But the plan didn't work.
Dennis endured three excruciating months
of that noise. And now,
with the vote on the sale
coming up in a matter of days,
you're under pressure to save the deal.
You're wrong, by the
way. It did work. Okay?
Just last week, Dennis snapped.
He couldn't take the noise anymore.
He came by here to make the deal.
He said he'd vote for the
sale of the building if I
you know, gave him a signing bonus.
Just check the security
cameras. He was here. Okay?
So the morning you visited Dennis
I was delivering the money. 200K.
He's not a very good negotiator.
I'd have easily tripled
it, but he was in a rush.
So, why did you lie to us earlier?
Uh Okay, um
Pinecorp is a publicly traded company.
And, um, I
I would lose my job if anybody found out
that I was I was handing out
I think the word you're
looking for is "bribes".
We'll be in touch.
There was no trace of
the money at Dennis'.
But he did have one
other visitor that day.
Eden.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
- Can you pop the trunk?
- Sure.
Eden Turner?
You're packing pretty light
for a trip to Cambodia.
- I'm impressed.
- I'm surprised
you're still going
without your boyfriend.
Dennis was booked on
the seat next to yours.
[CAR LOCK CHIRPS]
Jessica Lewis?
You're the head of
the condo board, right?
I'm sorry, do I know you?
Carl Embers. I'm Dennis' brother.
I'm so sorry.
I heard you're still
pushing through the vote
to sell the building.
I just wanted to let you
know that I plan to honour
my brother's wishes to keep
the apartment in the family
and will be voting against the sale.
Well, it's all there.
I know how this looks. I do.
It looks like your boyfriend got killed
and you got caught fleeing the country
with a bag full of his money.
I don't know where to start.
Well, the truth is usually
easiest to remember.
Okay. [BREATHING RAPIDLY]
Dennis called me last
week to get back together.
He said he was about
to come into some money,
and he wanted us to leave
Toronto and start again.
In Cambodia. Known for
its beautiful beaches,
the ruins of Angkor Wat,
and I'm missing something.
No extradition treaty.
[SIGHS]
What was Dennis running from?
He wouldn't say. The
day that he was killed,
I went to his place to pick up
the money. He was paranoid.
He thought that security
would stop him at the airport,
so he asked me to hide
the cash in my luggage.
So then, why go through
with his plan once he's gone?
Because I'm terrified.
Dennis was running from someone.
He comes into money and
then he ends up dead?
That can't be a coincidence.
If Dennis' death had anything
to do with this money,
I didn't want to wait
around and find out.
Alright, let's say that
Eden didn't kill him.
Why was Dennis running
in the first place?
Why was he in such a rush?
Well, that's where
it falls apart, right?
If I was Dennis and I
wanted to leave town,
I'd sell the condo and wait
for the deal to be closed,
you know? Then I'd take
off with my millions
from the sale rather
than two hundred thousand.
But Dennis took whatever
he could get upfront.
Eden said he was running
away from someone.
Or something. Something
that could be found
in his unit after he left.
Now, these are work
logs from the building.
That weight-bearing
pole in his living room?
Maintenance never installed it.
So he put it in on his own?
Why would you go to all
that trouble yourself?
Maybe he didn't want
someone poking around
where they shouldn't.
Dennis knew what was causing
the roof above his unit
to collapse. Something heavy.
I'll put a team of forensics on standby.
Okay. So we are here,
right above Dennis's unit.
And that would place the column
under here.
Look at these azaleas. The
leaves are all curled and
the stems have a purple tinge.
That's the effects
of high alkaline soil.
Okay. Didn't know you had a green thumb.
We had a herb garden on
the balcony growing up.
There's many reasons
for high alkaline soil.
Lack of water.
Surplus calcium, or
concrete.
Looks like we hit bottom.
Maybe a false bottom.
That's a solid two feet off the ground.
Why?
When we removed the
earth, we found this.
The bottom two feet of the bed
were haphazardly filled with concrete.
Whoever did this was in a rush.
You see how the earth is fused
with the top layer of concrete?
They didn't wait long enough
for the concrete to dry
before shovelling the earth back on top.
How long would it have
taken someone to do this?
Approximately 10-12 hours.
Well, when you said you found something,
we were expecting a
little more than some dirt
stuck to concrete. No offence.
Rude. But fair.
I was saving the best for last.
Give us a minute.
Well, well, well.
I think we just found
what Dennis was hiding.
Dennis knew about this
body in the flowerbed.
He wanted it to remain buried.
That's why when the weight of
it caused his roof to crack,
he fixed it himself.
He didn't want anyone
coming to dig up his secret.
It also explains why
he didn't want to sell.
He knew if Pinecorp bought the building,
the body would be
unearthed in demolition.
But eventually he caved,
and planned to be in Cambodia
by the time this turned up.
Well, that didn't work out.
Questions still remains, though,
how does whoever's in there
connect with the shooting?
Maybe the shooter was
avenging the death of the body
in the concrete. Killed
Dennis as payback.
"Every block of stone
has a statue inside it,
and it's the task of the
sculptor to discover it."
Michelangelo had it easy.
We, on the other hand, do not.
The bones are fused with the concrete.
One wrong move and we
could shatter the skull,
along with the teeth that
we need for dental records.
Anything we can go from in the meantime?
Victim is female. 5'4".
X-ray found a helix
piercing in her right ear.
Judging from the state of decomposition,
she was killed about 20 years ago.
I know it's not a lot to go off of.
Actually, it might be all we need.
Okay.
This is from 20 years ago, 2003.
Work permits to reinstall
the fire escape on Dennis' building.
There is a note here on concrete repair.
That's how Dennis buried the body.
He didn't bring up the
equipment for the concrete
- because it was already there.
- What month is that?
- November.
- Okay, November 2003.
Missing persons.
Okay.
We got three women who match
the height of the deceased
found in the concrete.
But only one with the
same helix piercing.
Maeve Waters, 16.
I know that face.
Dennis' photo album.
Dennis knew Maeve from camp.
Dennis was Maeve's camp friend.
He was a godsend to her the one summer
she went to Camp Rosseau.
I cannot imagine that he would ever
want to hurt her.
All her letters home mentioned Dennis.
They bonded over their love of music.
Maeve played the violin
and he played the piano.
He was the only thing
she liked about camp.
Did you ever meet Dennis?
No. They lost touch once
the school year began.
I have no idea why she would've seen him
the night she went missing.
Well, Maeve was last seen
at a concert at Roy Thomson Hall.
Dennis worked there
part-time as an usher.
They must have run into each other.
Are these your daughter's photos?
They're incredible. Excellent eye.
Dynamic composition.
Well, anything she'd set her
mind to, she would master.
That's an expensive camera,
though, for a teenager.
I mean, back then, these
would have gone for
four or five grand.
Did she buy it herself?
It was a gift from a boyfriend, I think.
Is there any possibility that Dennis
gave the camera to
her? Were they dating?
I don't think so.
And do you know when she got the camera?
No.
September 2003.
That's about two months
before Maeve's disappearance.
You can see how the
images changed this month.
This is higher quality glass.
More bokeh, sharper depth of field,
- the mark of a great Leica.
- Sandra?
In here!
That's my husband.
Kenneth. I want you to meet
Detectives Graff and Bateman.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
My client won't be answering
any questions today.
You can show us as much
film as you'd like, though.
Well, we only have this one clip,
because the second time he
went back to the building,
he was armed, and went
through the back door
where there are no security cameras.
I have never been in the
same room as Dennis Embers.
- Kenneth, we discussed
- No. I have nothing to hide.
That was the only time I
set foot in the building.
I just wanted to talk to Dennis.
Just like you wanted
to talk to John Hucks,
Maeve's former English teacher?
He told me that back in
2004, you had a "conversation".
It ended with you breaking his nose.
I had a lot of anger the
years after Maeve disappeared.
John was far too
interested in my daughter,
so I talked to him and
I-I took things too far.
That's why this time, with Dennis,
I wanted to make sure
I got things right.
I just wanted information from him.
What made you think Dennis
had any information to give?
Last week, I got an email
from a random address.
It said Maeve's body was hidden
at 1220 Rosedale Valley Road.
When I looked up the
residence, I saw Dennis' name.
Maeve's old friend.
In the building her body is buried.
Couldn't have been a coincidence.
Why didn't you come to
us with this information?
These past 20 years,
I'd grab onto any theory
of what happened to Maeve.
I shared every shred with the police.
Over time, they stopped listening.
I had to make sure this was solid first.
You took your own road to get to us,
but now you're here.
If you really want help
catch Maeve's killer,
you can start by giving us that email.
The email sent to Kenneth was placed
on a scheduled-send
delay of nine minutes.
What good does a nine-minute delay do?
Not much, unless it was a mistake.
You think the sender meant
to schedule it for nine days
rather than nine minutes?
Nine days, weeks,
months, take your pick.
I was able to track
the sender's IP address:
789 Yonge Street.
Toronto Reference Library.
They have great events. What?
Well, your friends at TPL
just sent over the camera feed
from the time the email was sent.
Dennis.
Why would he sell himself out?
Yeah, thanks.
Da Silva just ruled Maeve
Waters' cause of death
as manual strangulation.
Hyoid bone was shattered.
Which would require
35 pounds of pressure.
Two hands around her neck.
Maeve was probably looking
at her killer when she died.
Most likely a crime of passion.
Just got off the phone
with Kenneth's alibi.
He was at his mother's retirement home
at the time of Dennis' murder.
He's not our condo shooter.
So we now have Dennis
for Maeve's murder,
but we've exhausted all our
suspects for the condo shooting.
Unless we've been
looking at this all wrong.
What if Dennis had help
burying Maeve's body?
Da Silva said he would have
taken Dennis up to 12 hours.
Even if he started the process at night,
it would have stretched into morning.
- Somebody could've spotted him.
- But if Dennis had help,
those 12 hours become six.
Work's done at night. No witnesses.
So, whoever helped
Dennis bury Maeve's body
is also our shooter?
It's possible. 20 years later,
Dennis develops a conscience,
tips off Maeve's father about the body.
If the accomplice
knew he was gonna talk,
maybe he'd wipe him out
before he said too much.
Okay. That's a start.
This time, try to come
back with a suspect
that doesn't have an alibi.
Those ones usually work better!
Direct from Camp Rosseau.
Over 500 photos from the summer of '03.
Now, if Dennis had a close friend,
you'd think they'd be captured
in the same frame together
at least once, but
he's only ever pictured
with Maeve or Carl, his brother.
It's Carl. With Dennis.
Look what's slung over his shoulder.
Maeve's camera.
The same camera she was
given by an ex-boyfriend.
Carl and Maeve were in a relationship.
Oh, Dr. Embers, a word?
It's about Tuesday night.
Hmm?
Um
During the emergency craniotomy,
you left before I finished the surgery.
I lost the patient.
The hospital is doing
an investigation, and
I'm sorry, but I'm gonna
have to let them know
that I don't know where
you were that night.
I was at the hospital the whole night.
- I can't lie to
- You lost a patient.
Welcome to medicine, it happens.
Now, you tell that lie to the board,
I will ensure that no
hospital will hire you
for the rest of your
insignificant career.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
So the Embers brothers
bury Maeve's body.
But which one killed her?
Strangulation isn't a team sport.
My bet's on Carl.
What's stopping Carl from
pinning it all on Dennis?
Dead men don't speak.
And they're terrible
at defending themselves.
Carl and Maeve dated briefly at camp.
She ended things. He's got motive.
Any defence lawyer worth their salt
will argue it would have
been impossible for Carl
to have killed Maeve all
the way from Montreal.
He was studying at McGill.
So he must've come home unexpectedly.
"Must have" is worlds
apart from "indisputable".
But let's set that aside for a moment.
So, Carl and Dennis are both complicit.
They bury Maeve's body on the roof.
Cut to this month,
Carl learns that Dennis
is gonna skip town
'cause he sold the condo,
which will unearth Carl's secret,
so he kills Dennis to inherit the condo
and keep the body buried. Am I close?
You're in the ballpark.
If you can prove Carl
is our condo shooter,
then the pieces also fall
into place with Maeve's murder.
Carl kills his younger brother
to cover up his past crimes.
But then you encounter
another road block.
Carl also has an alibi for
the night of the shooting.
He was on call at Harbourfront Memorial.
That alibi has to be fabricated.
Then pull at the seams.
[AMBULANCE SIREN BLARING]
Look I told the officers before, okay?
Dr. Embers was on call.
He was supervising me the whole night.
Even during the operation
where you lost a patient?
I made a mistake,
alright? It was my fault.
An emergency craniotomy.
Now wouldn't an operation of that scale
require a senior attending surgeon?
But when things went south,
Dr. Embers didn't step in.
Why? Because he wasn't there.
Hassan.
If you tell us the truth,
he'll be gone from your life.
He stepped out for
three hours that night.
And I'm sorry I didn't
say that before, but
Dr. Embers, he can
be so intimidating.
But whenever other people
are around, he just
he turns it off.
I feel like I'm losing my mind.
You're not. So how does he treat you
when no one else is around?
I just want to be clear.
We're agreeing to
sell Dennis' condo now?
Yeah. Get rid of it.
Well, you didn't have
to hire me to vote yes,
but I'm happy to take your money.
I told you what the police
found in Dennis' unit.
I'm sorry. It's it's awful.
It's for the best that it's torn down.
Vote is in an hour.
Are you sure? Perhaps
I don't know how much clearer
I need to be. Seriously.
[OMINOUS MUSIC]
[CHILDREN LAUGHING IN THE DISTANCE]
Yep.
Thank you so much for your time.
I just got out of a deep dive
into Carl's time at McGill.
He was in residence at Douglas Hall.
- Was that your dorm?
- No. I was at McConnell.
But check out that article.
Okay. "Gas leak found at Douglas Hall.
All residents forced to evacuate."
One guess. What day did
they find that gas leak?
November 4th, the day of Maeve's murder.
Carl had to leave his residence.
I just talked to his
roommate from that year,
he remembers Carl getting on
the first train home to Toronto.
Placing him at the scene of the crime.
- Yep.
- Okay, here's what I got.
Dennis didn't have a cochlear implant
in any of these camp photos,
meaning he might not have been
born with a hearing impairment.
So I looked into his medical
records and found this.
Dennis was 16 when he got his implant
after suffering extreme
blunt head trauma.
He presented to the
ER with a cracked head
and broken arm. The doctor
on call suspected abuse.
Family Services were notified,
they investigated, but
they cleared the mother.
And you suspect it was Carl.
Look at how tense Carl's forearm
is across Dennis's shoulder.
He's not hugging him,
he's clamping down on him.
Although Dennis' mouth is smiling,
his eyes are terrified.
Sibling physical abuse.
Often overlooked, chalked
up to boys being boys.
I haven't gotten to the best part.
Look at the date of the X-ray.
[SCOFFS]
[DOOR BUZZING]
Thank you for coming down.
We just need your
signature on a few things
to release your brother's condo.
Take a seat.
Can I get you a coffee or anything?
No, just show me where to sign.
Oh, I wanted to give this back to you.
Oh, since we're in the process
of returning your property
Leica M6.
Maeve put your gift to good use.
She took some beautiful photographs.
Carl, it's okay.
We know that you and Maeve dated
and we know that you came
home the night she was killed.
It must've been awful.
You get off that train, you
walk in that door into what?
I can only imagine.
[SIGHS]
By the time I got there,
she was already gone.
And Dennis asked you to help him
bury the body on the roof?
Yeah. He was, uh
very scared.
And he didn't know what he had done
until it was
too late.
And he begged me to
to help him.
And he was my brother, you know?
My little brother.
Do you know how he killed her?
Mm-hmm. He said he strangled her.
Okay. That lines up.
We'll have to get a written statement.
Just one more question, um
I know it's not your field, but
I was hoping you could give
me help in reading this.
Dennis' X-ray. I'm no doctor, but
that looks to me like a clean break.
You know? [CHUCKLES]
Doesn't take a professional
to read the date.
September 1st, 2003.
Correct me if I'm wrong,
but wouldn't the treatment
for a severe radius fracture
be to put the arm in a cast
for at least four months?
It would be impossible for
him to have strangled Maeve,
wouldn't it, doctor?
I think you may have
got some details wrong
about the night Maeve was killed.
How about we start
again from the top?
November 4th.
While you're on a train home to Toronto,
your brother's running into
your ex-girlfriend at a concert.
They were good friends at camp,
but that night, they hit it off.
Went back to the condo.
And later, you do walk in on them,
but Maeve was very much alive.
And judging by what happened next,
let me guess, they were in bed together.
[GRAFF SIGHS]
Your little brother
with your ex-girlfriend,
the girl who dumped you.
That must've been so humiliating.
She didn't stand a chance.
And then you force your
brother to help bury her body.
[CLEARS THROAT]
None of this is true, so I'm done here.
Um, next time you want to talk to me,
my lawyer will be present.
Your lawyer can talk to you in holding.
After the admission you just gave,
we have enough to take you in.
- I haven't admitted anything.
- Actually, you did.
But you were so caught
up in self-preservation,
you failed to notice.
We have you on record
admitting to helping
bury a body. That's accessory
after the fact to murder.
Oh, I can hear your lawyer's
closing remarks right now.
Yeah, they'll play up your
character as a defence.
How after Maeve's death,
you became a changed man,
you went into medicine as penance.
You devoted your life to helping others.
You swore the Hippocratic oath.
You became Dr. Embers.
You got the stunning
house, the loving wife,
and two adorable girls.
You had made the perfect world.
Until Dennis decided to destroy it.
Unless you killed Dennis,
you would inherit the condo.
You could block the deal yourself.
Because if you didn't,
your life would be obliterated.
Your family.
Your work.
Such important work.
Just this week alone,
you saved four lives.
But also this week, you took four lives.
Four innocent lives.
After you killed your brother,
you murdered Derek Kapoor.
He just got married last month.
Harold Chen. He was his parents'
caregiver for eight years.
And Amanda Green.
She just became a grandmother.
You didn't know they were
gonna be there, did you, doctor?
[SIGHS]
I
I just wanted Dennis.
But they saw my face
and it was too late.
I didn't know what else to do.
You didn't know what else to do?
How about, "First, do no harm"?
Sometimes, the dead do speak.
[THEME MUSIC]
