I feel like I could do.

Mark: This is the first challenge
where they're sending someone home,
and we definitely need
to bring our A game.
We need to work together.
We need to communicate.
We need to work fast.
And we definitely need to win.
Welcome back to "Lego Masters," the greatest
Lego-building competition in the world.
Last week, Team Aaron and Christian
won the coveted Golden Brick.
And now with that magical piece
in their possession,
they're safe from elimination,
but only if they choose to use it.
- Nice to have it in your back pocket.
- I agree.
We want to avoid using this
as long as we possibly can.
And hopefully produce a build
that does not need it.
At the end of this challenge, the team
with the last place build is going home.
Let's talk about
what you're going to build.
Look around. I don't think you
need to be a rocket scientist
to figure out the theme.
All: Space.
Space.
Wrong.

Yeah, sorry, you were right.

Because this week,
each team will tell a space-themed story,
and at the end of that story,
we're gonna smash it into pieces.

It doesn't get much better

You don't smash Lego.

Well, in this case, you do.
He has attachment issues.
All right, you're gonna be judged
on your creation and how it looks
when it shatters and splatters, so make
sure you factor that into your design.

by our Brick Masters,
Lego lead designers
Jamie and Amy.
Brick Masters, what should they
keep in mind for a build like this?
This challenge is really an
opportunity to tell an amazing story
around the moment of the smash.
Jamie: And it is really important
that the build not only looks great,
but smashes in the most
spectacular way.
How are we going to destroy
your builds?
That's a really good question
that I've just asked myself.
This seems like the time
in a competition show
where we would wow people
with a guest star, right?
- But we're not gonna do that.
- Aww.
Actually, yes,
we are gonna do that.
- Oh!

I wanted you to come by 'cause
I need you to smash something.
Will, I'm an actor
with a PhD in neuroscience.

you want me to smash some Lego stuff?

We've got three incredible ways
to smash your creations.
First we're gonna bust them
with a space ball bat.
( laughing )

a little hard to resist,
so I already kind of did that.
But we can just watch it

Next we're gonna use explosives
to make a big bang.

we're going to gravity drop them
from high above
our studio stratosphere.
And by that,
she means the balcony.

Mayim, have you ever been this
excited about anything in your life?
- No.
- I haven't.
It's so great.
You have, like, an alien
and an astronaut
that are both,
like, clinging to each other.
And they're like, "Aah!"
Jamie:
When creating a Lego model,
the initial planning is some of the
most critical part of the build.
We're gonna do alien intestines.
The teams may not be able
to fully control the explosion,
but they can definitely have an influence
over the story that they're telling.
But since it has to break apart,
what if it was like a volcano?
And that's where their
creativity comes into play.
So we have two bright colors, but the
one's not showing up until it explodes.
Yeah, that's a good idea.
Sam: Last challenge we had
miscommunication and anger.
And we do not want to be
in the bottom two again.
This is a chance for
you guys to kind of reset.
- Yes.
- A new challenge.
How do you feel about
the challenge this week?
I feel good because I am
obsessed with space.
Yeah, you know, I find that all my
exes, they must love space.
They were always asking
for space.
- Jessica: I'm Jessica.
- Sam: I'm Sam.
We left our corporate jobs to pursue
our dreams of becoming artists.
Sam: We met through
the Lego community,
and we have never built
together before.
Jessica: If we go in there
with a positive attitude,
we're gonna crush
the competition.
Something cute,
but still-- but still spacey.
We are going to create space cats
that are attacking planet Earth.
And they come across
this dog park.
I've done stuff like this before.
I think this will work.
Oh. Someone's running.
So, thank you for joining me
here, by the way.
There's no one I'd rather spend
11 hours with than you.
- It's a lot of time.
- Yeah. Well, they gotta build.
So, I just spend my time
doing this kind of stuff.
- Are they rolling?
- Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're rolling.
- Oh, we're rolling?
- Yeah, we're rolling.
- I didn't realize.

- I'm sorry. I didn't realize.
- This is reality television.
That's a camera, that's a
camera, that's a camera.
So, some people are still planning
while others are already collecting.
Yeah, they sketch it out.
You see these guys, they plan it out.
- They argue over stuff.
- Have there been any fights yet?
No fights, but there have been
a few disagreements.
- Okay.
- And then when you go and you say like,
"Hey, are you guys getting
along?" They're like, "We are."
- Two kids sitting on a couch
- Yeah.
- playing a video game,
and then do, like, a TV. - Yeah.
So Mark and I have the big bang,
and we are creating a video game
battle that sort of comes to life.
Then the explosion is game over.
- Yeah.
- How cool.
What's the sort of inspiration
for this?
It was my daughter,
my eight-year-old in my brain,
it inspired me to think what if
the girl's spaceship is a unicorn?
- Oh, that's cool.
- Yeah.
Incorporating my daughter
and her ideas
and the things that she loves,
it makes me want to do twice as awesome
on this build
as I could otherwise.
First thing that comes to my mind
is, like, a space station.
We got the big bang. And we're going to
build a crescent-shaped space station.
One of the loaders has lost control and is
now spiraling towards the space station.
- Pah! It's gonna be great.
- ( rumbling )
Cool. It'll be a really--
really different shape, I think.
Aaron, is that gonna be
like a space Ferris Wheel or?
You know,
it's funny you say that.
Mel: We are creating a big purple
monster that eats planets
- Both: named Legor.
- ( laughing evilly )
Tell me how competitive are
you guys with the other teams?
I mean, there's no way that you
take two dudes from the streets
and tell us that we can't beat
people in the Lego competition.
Do you know how much we would
get clowned in the hood?
Nah, it's not going down
like that, Will.
- Nuh-uh, no, unh-uh.
- Not at all.
Kara, how are you feeling?
We, um, we are communicating.
Right. You're communicating well.
Well, you keep talking for her.
- Yes.
- Okay. Jess-- Jess.

- Still laughing through that tight smile.
- She's the puppet master.

- I've been seeing it in my mind,
and I'm just kind of doing it.

we work together,

This week we have 11 hours for the Space
Smash Challenge and we got gravity drop.
And we are building a planet that
has a core that's ready to explode.
The plan is
to have this exposed,
but to still keep
the cylinder shape.
So that way when it smashes,
there's no support over here.
So it's gonna break
a lot easier.
- Corey: Hey, what's up? I'm Corey.
- Travis: And I'm Travis.
Being five years older,
my dad always told me
that I had to protect
my brother.
When I was six,
I was diagnosed with leukemia.
And being practically bedridden,
I wasn't able to go outside
like my other friends was doing.
I felt like I failed him.
And it's hard thinking
about it now being, you know,
we're older and he's healthy.
But at that time, it was tough.
Having my brother coming over to the
hospital to play Lego with me was a treat.
We started building
whatever we could imagine.
We've been building Lego
for about 20 years,
and we're gonna do this
competition and we're gonna win.
And we're excited.
So when it falls, all the elements
inside the core is leaking out.
- Leaking out, yeah. - And that's
what's causing everything to explode.
- Hey, guys.
- Hey, overachievers.

- I can't wait to see
what it's gonna be 'cause I
think that how y'all work, right?
You can't tell what it is
until the very end.
An important part of any challenge or
competition is the element of surprise.
We have a strong plan,
but we want to be extra hush-hush.
Yeah.
A lot of what I'm showing Amy
is how to design these tentacles
using SNOT pieces.
Will: Lego Learn about
Tyler and Amy's SNOT.
I know what you're thinking.
Is this another PSA about flu season?
It'SNOT.
Lego SNOT stands
for Studs Not On Top,
which means you're building
with your pieces
facing upside down
or to the side.
It helps you achieve a smoother,
more realistic build,
and that's nothing to sneeze at.
- ( man sneezes )
- You're fired.
I'm kidding.
( no audible dialogue )
I got to get more, Jessie.
- How tall is it?
- 15 and a half.
So we're going to
make Volcopolis,
a city that is built
on top of a volcano.
It has a monster
living underneath,
which is eventually going to
explode the whole volcano.
We can do this.
Look how fast this is going up.
Flynn:
I am an anxious tornado
and Richard is always cool.
Which is great, because
it super balances me out
and it works really well for us.
I feel like this is
building to our strengths.
Well, I think I could
get it done faster.
We could have had it done
already if you just start.
Um, like,
is that all you want done?
That's your dog park? Are you gonna
start building on top of there?
Yes.
Have you been seeing what's
going on with Sam and Jessica?
- Yeah. - It just seems like they
can't agree on anything right now.
- They haven't really built anything.
- No.
Jamie: So early to already
be having that conflict.
We've seen it cost them before.
Yes, I get it.
Fence all around. Done.
- Okay. - You drew it. You don't
need to write it five times.
Okay. Again, let's be
a little kinder, okay?
- Hey, guys. Nestor and Manny.
- How's it going?
- Hi, how are you doing?
- How are you guys? Good to see you guys.
- Sorry to interrupt.
- That's fine.
Manny: My dad and I
are building this planet moon
and this alien lives in it.
I want to create something
that when the space ball bat
hits it,
- it won't break.
- Oh.
- Yeah. - You know, I got a bad
elbow, so that's gonna hurt,
- just gonna be honest with you.
- No, no.
I'm gonna create
some alien intestines,
so hopefully, you know, the whole
sphere that's holding it will break.
- Everything else would just drop.
- That's pretty cool.
- So you guys would just pick up on
what's gonna drop. - That's cool.
- You had me at alien intestines.
- Right?
Onward and upward.
So Amie and I got
the gravity drop,
and we are making a spacecano
- Called Planet
- Both: Volcalia.
So we're actually kind of
doing the same thing
that I do a lot
for 3-D printing.
You use kind of like
a in-fill structure
kind of like a honeycomb, so it still
has structure support for this volcano.
- Oh, feels good. - But it doesn't
weigh as much or take up as many bricks.
And then we're just gonna
fill it with sparkles.
- Hey, Kara and Jessie.
- Both: Hi.
What is your story
that's out of this world?
Jessie: It is a spaceship that
is being attacked by an alien.
So once the bat hits
our creation,
we want to look like
the alien is exploding
and his insides are coming out.
Just think about one complete
story that only gets better
- Yes.
- when it's destroyed.
Okay.
- Hey, Aaron.
- Yeah?
You might need to use that
Golden Brick for this challenge.

definitely puts us under the microscope.
Everyone wants to swoop in
and get it from us.

- Slow and steady, but fast.

I look around the room
and there's a lot built.
I think if we just focus on the
task, we can definitely do it.
Like, right now,
you're pushing down a sidewalk
where you don't know where
anything going around it is.

If you don't have a plan

I'm not counting

some team dynamic issues
building our space cat
attacking a dog park.
We just have to kind of
figure out how to communicate
and do the best
that we can possibly do.
I don't feel like you're being part of
the team. You're not doing anything.

- What's going on? - I'm really trying to
just map it out the best that I can do.
Um, and I hope that we can
come together as a team
and make something
that's awesome.

So at the end of the day,
you have to have each other's backs.

We're gonna build a crescent-shaped
space station that's under construction.
And I'm running into a really
tough engineering problem.
We're building a build
that's designed to break,
but it's breaking too much.

I think I have to have a
little more stability in there.
- It's a bit too finicky.
- Whoa.
I'd be panicking right now,
but maybe, you know,
you work well with your back
up against the ropes, right?
I do my best, yeah.
Most other teams
are building something
that's really round and compact
and full of things.
Our vision is to have a lot
of dispirit explosions
that make for a more dynamic
final product.
- Oh, and I saved my one by fours.

- Fantastic. - I have to say
looking at this, I am curious to see
how is that going to actually
disintegrate when the pieces are so large?
I know we're taking a little
bit of a risk with this design,
but I think we can
prove him wrong.
- I think it will work, you know?

You have some really nice
geometry there,
- but it's also using Technic
- Right.
which is one of our
strongest methods of building.
- I know, I know.
- Our Brick Masters can be pretty brutal.

We're seeing quite a change

and we just completely
removed that level.
And that's what I'm a little bit concerned
when I'm seeing the current direction
is you have quite a lot of
area that it would be very hard
for even a professional
baseball player
to be hitting below
a certain point.
I just want to make sure that,
you know, when Will comes in,
this is gonna be
an awesome moment.

into the mouth of the alien.

our hero destroying the monster.
We still want to beat you,
but you're doing great.
Everybody's working towards making
something really incredible
to smash.

Amy: Amy and Tyler have been
keeping their cards
a little bit close
to their chest.
Yeah, they've been
very secretive.
Amy: But it really
screams out "space"
and they've got
some great scale there.
The canister will drop
into the alien's mouth
- and explode.
- I'm liking it.
What do you think about
Sam and Jessica
and how they've progressed?
Amy: Once they get
the head on that cat,
then I think they'll
really have something.
It's starting to come together,
but they really wasted
a lot of time
because they just
weren't working together.
- T-minus one hour!

Will: Ho, ho!

When I get up to here,
we'll turn it.

so that the point of impact
is more concentrated.

trying to make those

when I went over
to speak with them,
it did feel a little flimsy.

We've got to make
a decision quickly.
If they can't manage
to put it all together,
they might be in the bottom two,
and someone's going

- Oh!
- Jessie: This is a disaster.
The spaceship is completely
destroyed before it's destroyed.
The worst thing we can do
is panic right now
That's the absolute
worst thing we can do.

Amy:
We got the gravity drop.
We have our hero
and the monstrous villain
from the depths of space.
Our hero has got
a trick up his sleeve--
this highly explosive canister
that will bring him
ultimate victory.
This is epic.
It commands a presence.
So, well done for accomplishing
something at that scale.
What I'm impressed with the most
is your building
techniques look easy,
but they're actually
deceptively hard.
When you're making all of these
different curve shapes coming up
and keeping them stable,
that's really difficult.
- You did a great job with it.
- Thank you.
Now it's time to destroy
your beautiful creation.

Tyler: So our plan all
along was to have the bomb
drop into the monster's mouth,

Going into this build,
we knew the we were
going to have to destroy it.
So there is a certain amount
of satisfaction and pleasure
in seeing it actually explode
the way you've been
imagining it.
Sam and Jessica, you're up.
Sam: This is the first
elimination challenge,
and we do not want to be
in the bottom two again.
What's the story here?
Jessica:
Intergalactic space cats
are invading planet Earth
and they have stumbled
across a dog park.
Sam: And Will is going to be
the hero of the universe
and use the space bat
to save the planet
and knock the cat
out of this world.
( meows )
I know you guys were having a little
bit of trouble working together,
so it's ironic that your theme
is cats and dogs.
He was definitely the cat.
Oh, meow.
When a story where you want to
have the cat knocked off,
you want to leave something
behind that we care about.
And unfortunately
when I see the tan building,
it just doesn't
have enough detail
to make me want it
to actually survive.
I kind of want
the whole thing to go off.
It's really clear that you guys
struggled with time here.
When you look at
some of the other builds,
yours is on
a much smaller scale.

But as you can see,
the core is leaking

I think you guys were clever
to have the build open
so that you saw that molten core
as it smashed to the ground.
Overall, it was great.
Richard and Flynn, you're up.
Richard: Humans have found
a rocky, desolate planet.
And what they actually discover
is it's not just a mountain.
It's a volcano.
The alien inside
is going to sacrifice itself
and blow up the mountain
to rid its planet of humans.
- Quite a story.
- It is.
I am curious to see
how it actually explodes
because you've given quite
a large base on the bottom.
( sighs )
Flynn: The fate of how
our model explodes
is literally in Will's hands.
Like, that just terrifies me.
I'll give it my all.
Especially since
someone's going home.

of the unicorn to your daughter?
Absolutely,
but I think she'll be sad
that we had to blow it up.

It's just so different.
The way you've crafted
the spaceship
and the robot themselves
are really well articulated.
And then the fact that
you've actually broken it up
and polished all of these
little details,
I think it's quite clever.

Jessie: An astronaut left the
keys out to the space craft,
so an alien had found the key.
It decided to attack.
So within moments
it's going to fully explode.

This is always the scary part.

I feel nervous for them.
( bricks creaking )

Sam: Okay, okay.
Carrying these bricks
makes me feel anxious
trying to get the build
from point A to point B.

hate to disappoint Jessie.
And I am just hoping that its final
flight, it will be something pretty.

it all kind of started
to fall apart.
And now I feel like
the explosion has happened
before the bat
even comes into play.

And that means that
if this doesn't go well

I think we've made
a calculated risk.
We have the big bang.
This is a new
human space station
that is currently under
construction on the crescent.
This little cargo carrying vehicle
has spiraled out of control,
and that's not going to
go very well for anybody.
I'm still trying to understand
why you've chosen to have
so much negative space
when the challenge is all about
making a big explosion.
This lattice structure, we think,
is going to look really impressive
when it all falls apart.

All we can hope is that
that risk doesn't sink us.
