Lucky 7 (2013) s01e02 Episode Script
Inside Job
Previously on "Lucky 7" I need your lottery pool money.
Don't worry, Matt.
We got your back.
You know the combo to the safe.
We make it look like a robbery.
Everything okay? Aah! As long as we stick together, they got nothin'.
Ted never came home last night.
Suspicious, right? You're really sweet.
I just want to take things slow.
The final number is 7! I'm not part of the winning ticket, but I'm happy for all of you.
Give the neighborhood something to cheer about.
Will you stop worrying? Inside job is the first place you look.
He'd be a bad cop if he didn't.
It's like a it's like a procedural step.
I keep thinking we left something behind.
Like what? Fingerprints, DNA hell if I know.
Our fingerprints are all over the place.
That's the beauty of it, dummy.
We work here.
We haven't heard from Minetti in two days.
You think that's okay? I'm sure he's off chasing the dude who knocked off those other two joints.
That's why we used the same M.
O.
, isn't it? Hey, you ever think that maybe, by some miracle, your brother's plan actually worked out the way it was supposed to? Tell that to Bob.
Look, Bob's gonna be out of the hospital in a couple days, and he's gonna start counting his millions.
This whole robbery thing is just gonna be a bad memory.
Yo, we just won the lottery.
Our luck is changing! Guys! We have a major problem.
What do you mean you lost the lottery ticket? I know I brought it to work, because I didn't want to leave it at home, and I was gonna put it in my locker, but I didn't, because we just had the robbery, and so I hid it somewhere extra safe so that I wouldn't forget.
It's in a baggie.
Who cares about the damn ticket? Everybody knows we won.
Didn't you read the letter they gave us? Unless we formally submit the winning ticket to the lottery board, we don't get a penny.
You guys looking for this? If someone asks you where you're from? Zip my lip and think of mom.
But if you feel you have to share? Say we moved from Delaware.
And if they ask about your daddy? Say he moved and act real saddy.
Good girl.
Is someone gonna find us 'cause of the lottery? No, honey.
I'm never gonna let that happen.
Promise.
I think I found a new name for her.
You ready? Angelina.
Really? Yeah.
She's gorgeous.
She's smart, she's talented, she's rich, she's generous.
I mean, she's got, like, 27 damaged orphan children or something.
Yeah, I don't know.
Isn't that kind of fancy? You're right.
I got a better one.
Charlize Lavecchia Korzak.
Wow.
Charlize.
Yeah.
She's only like the most beautiful woman in the world.
Ever.
Well, that is kind of fitting, since we've got the most beautiful baby.
That's what I'm saying.
Yeah.
Here you go.
So, you find out yet? Which of those traitors voted against you? Ah.
What's it matter now? Oh, it matters.
If someone turns on you like that, votes you out of your rightful, hard-earned money, you ought to know.
Especially if it was your own brother.
Nicky would never vote against me.
Why? 'Cause he's got such a conscience? He let you close on your own, knowing of all the other robberies in the neighborhood.
- You could have been killed.
- But I wasn't.
Well, I don't see him losing any sleep over what happened to Bob.
If it was Nicky in that store and you weren't there, you'd never be able to live with yourself.
It's karma, Samira.
Don't you see? In America, they say no free rides.
Pretty sure you're the only one who says that, dad.
Well, I'm not saying it anymore.
How can I after we won the lottery? - "We"? - Our blessings must be shared.
Or what comes around will go right back around.
The light is green, you moron! So, every Friday, my passengers will ride free, all day.
Free-ride Fridays.
Except to airports and Staten Island.
And also tolls.
That's great.
Dad, listen, I'll probably be out late tomorrow.
The lottery board is throwing us a huge party at Gold Star.
They're closing down the whole block.
Wonderful.
I'll call Naveed.
You two will have a great time.
You never even asked if I liked him.
What's there not to like? He shares our values and has his own career.
That's important now that you come from a rich family.
Trust me.
There are men out there who will only want you for your money.
You took Ted back? Sure.
He just needed a couple of days to get his head straight.
You know, we haven't been communicating so good, so he took some time to figure things out.
Yeah, like how to explain all those texts to the cable guy.
There was a problem with the fibers or the optics or something, and they fixed it.
Well, you guys seem happy.
I would just hate to see you get your heart broken and find out he only came back for the money.
Look, I'm not saying that everything's perfect, just that this is a chance for us to start new.
You know, spice things up a little.
My diet's going great.
Maybe we can even do a little shopping before the block party tomorrow.
I am not the shopping type.
Oh, my dad wants Naveed to come.
Is he still pushing the arranged-marriage thing? Yeah.
The weird part is, though, that Naveed is actually pretty funny and smart and cute.
Mrs.
Dibinsky, we're ready for your close-up.
Oh.
How do I look? Like 9 mill after taxes.
Hey, ain't you that guy from the news? Hank Langley, WABC-TV, channel 7.
We're doing a piece on you guys for tomorrow's broadcast.
Just a local thing, though, right? Yeah, well, you never know.
These wish-fulfillment stories, they can get picked up across the country.
Yo! We're gonna be famous! That's awesome! Is this on? Denise, America wants to know How will you spend the money? You know if you've got your husband and your health, everything else is just icing on the cake.
I updated the re-stock.
Pumps three and four are low, so I pushed the tanker delivery up a day.
Strawberries.
Huh? - What'd you have for breakfast? - Eggs.
No toast? No jam? Just eggs, scrambled.
Hmm.
I don't know what the hell's going on, but ever since I got hit on the head, I've been smelling strawberries everywhere.
Pretty weird, right? Yeah.
Listen, Bob, about the robbery There's been something on my mind I need to talk to you about.
Hey, don't go getting all mushy on me, all right? There's nothing you could have done to change it.
Sometimes, things happen for a reason.
There he is.
Detective Minetti taking a bite out of crime a bagel at a time.
There's been some new developments.
I thought I'd drop by and run some details by you, but, uh, before we do Matt.
Huh? Could I steal you for a quick sec? Sure.
Sure, of course.
So, I've been going over everything your interview, all the evidence, what have you.
Well things aren't quite adding up.
Oh, is that so? Yeah, there's a few inconsistencies in your story.
We want to make sure to get the facts straight 'cause, you know, we're circling in on a suspect.
You mind coming down to the station later to talk things through? You know, one last time? Growing up, my dad was always talking about how America is the "land of opportunity.
" And we'd kind of roll our eyes.
So, this has been pretty funny, 'cause now he's walking around, saying, "See? What did I tell you?" Hey, amigo, I saw you in the paper.
How's it feel being New York's biggest loser? Stuff rots your brain, you know.
"I won the lottery!" Yeah, I think it might be a little too late for you.
But everybody's so happy.
Uh, what am I gonna buy first? Well, my mom wants to fix the kitchen.
Both my brothers have tuitions, and one of them needs a new computer.
No, I I meant you.
What do you want? Oh, me.
Well, um, I'm just starting to figure that out, actually.
Yo, you're like a natural or something, you know.
Thanks.
Are you mad at me? What would I be mad about? Look, if it's hey.
If it's about that date that I went on, that was just a favor for a friend.
All right, look if I messed up, tell me what I got to do here, you know? I'll do it, whatever it is, to, you know grease the wheels.
Nice try, Romeo.
Hey, Mr.
Clemente, I was wondering if we could get a few words.
About what? 'Cause, you know, I wasn't in the lottery pool.
Yeah, I I know.
See, that's why we want to talk to you.
We're interested in how it feels not to win.
No hablo ingles.
Hey, papi.
Bianca's on the phone.
She sounds upset.
So at this point here, what's he saying? I think he said, "stay down on the floor.
" Well, we had a body-language expert analyze the footage, and she seemed to think he's asking a question, something like, "what are you doing on the floor?" Could be.
He made me get up right after.
So he never told you to get down? I'm I'm not sure.
All I can tell you is, you see a guy in a mask with a gun, your knees start to get wobbly.
Yours got wobbly pretty quick.
Uh "Take me to the safe.
" "I got this gun, and I ain't afraid to use it.
" "Is someone coming?" And then here.
Did he say anything here? Yeah, quite a conk.
Let me play it again if that'll help your memory.
No.
No, that's enough.
He di he didn't say anything.
He just did it and ran out.
Well, all right, then.
Good.
I just wanted to get all that straight, because here's the thing.
We brought in a suspect.
We want you to identify him.
We'll do a body-type and voice lineup.
When? How about now? You finger a perp, you can put all this behind you.
Uh, I'm gonna need to call my girlfriend, tell her I'm gonna be late.
All you got to do is pick a guy.
It's not that simple.
Yeah, it is.
If you're wrong, you're wrong.
If you're right, we're golden.
Come on, Nicky.
We're in this together, bro.
We got to back each other up like I have always done for you.
Now, we're almost out of this, so just man up.
Do what needs to be done.
Hey, Leanne! You have time now? Nope.
Clean-up, aisle three.
You know what, Denise? You were right.
They are throwing a big shindig for us tomorrow night, and we need to look good.
Let's go shopping, the three of us.
Immediately.
Like, right now.
Yeah, but you said that we Yeah, forget what I said.
I'll call a cab.
Okay.
I'll get my stuff.
Yes! Manhattan, here we come! Look, if you're still mad at me about that date thing, just let me make it up to you.
That place I was telling you about DJ Foosh let's go there tonight.
We'll blow a little dough.
I will work out a full-on apology in English or Urdu or freakin' pig Latin, if that's how you want it.
It's not just the date.
I saw you at the hospital with the police.
My ma lost her purse.
They were just helping out.
Stop lying! You're trouble, Nicky, and I'm not interested in trouble.
Yeah, well, what are you interested in? That Indian doogie howser I saw you with? Naveed is a doctor! And a very nice guy.
Yeah, he's really nice to your dad.
That's a really interesting future you got planned out.
I don't care what you think, and I'm not going out with you.
Yeah, I know, 'cause you're afraid.
But not of me.
You're afraid of not being the perfect little immigrant girl, of not doing exactly what your daddy says.
You're afraid of going after something that you actually want for once in your life Hey, honey, you ready? Shopping time.
All ready, Denise.
Let's go.
Suspended for one week.
What happened? He's not talking to me.
It's a man thing.
All right.
Let's hear it.
Ever since you lost the lottery, when someone messes something up, like gets an "F" or spills a tray in the cafeteria, kids call that "pulling a Clemente.
" They do, huh? And, in gym, when I missed a lay-up Joshie ferguson said I went "full Clemente.
" So I punched him.
Apparently, he punched you back.
We are not losers.
Okay? Everybody has their ups and downs, and some people like this Jason ferguson - Joshie.
- Joshie They don't know how to be nice about that.
When you miss a shot, you puff out your chest and you say, "next time, I'm gonna sink that sucker.
" You don't get it, papi.
They're all laughing at me.
Okay.
I got to get back to work.
We will talk about this later.
And no more hitting never.
That is not an option.
Come here.
Okay? May I help you? Uh, no, we're just looking.
Oh, yes! Are you a personal shopper? I am.
The three of us would like to spend a few hours and a few thousand dollars here.
Really? Well, you need to make an appointment in advance, so why don't you call and schedule that? Okay? Excuse me? I could give you a hand.
We'll take it.
Oh, this pile here, you mean? And that one, and that one, and that one over there.
All of it.
We'll take all of it.
"Show me the safe.
" "Open it up.
" "Is someone coming?" "Got this gun, ain't afraid to use it.
" I don't know.
Kind of tough to be certain.
You know, don't put too much pressure on yourself to be 100% positive.
Yeah, but if they're not guilty of robbing the Gold Star Then they're guilty of something else, all I'm saying.
Take a look at number five again.
He looks pretty good.
Five, step up.
"Open it up.
Is there anyone else here? I have a gun, and I'm not afraid to use it.
" $9,227.
Credit card? No worries, ladies.
This is on me.
I got an advance from my credit company, so we Will Pay in Cash.
$10,000.
Okay.
Uh, I'll get you change for $773.
No, sweetie, you keep it.
For you and your family in Brooklyn.
Oh! Take them out for something special.
We don't we don't get tips, usually, especially for that much money.
Theresa, you've been so nice and helpful, you deserve it.
It's too bad all salespeople aren't like you.
Thank you.
You're right there, Matt.
Just call it out.
If it feels right, it probably is.
Just have a little faith in yourself, kid.
All you've got to do is say the word.
Nope.
I can't.
Not him.
None of these guys are him.
Sorry, but I know what I know.
All right, let's get them out of there.
Okay, guys.
Let's go.
Sorry I couldn't put an end to it.
Yeah.
Me, too.
Get out of here.
Well, that didn't work.
I figured I could induce the kid to lie.
He's got more conscience than I bet on.
What do we do now? Take another look at his brother, Nicky.
It's the gals from Gold Star going back on the clock after what appears to be a Fifth Avenue shopping expedition.
I should really get back to work, guys.
Hey, Leanne, tell us, how long do you plan to keep your job? You know, I haven't really thought about it.
Can I squeeze by here? Oh, sure, sure, sure.
Just just one quick question.
Your daughter is she now the most popular kid in school? Will you stop?! Look, I don't like cameras, okay? I don't want to do your crummy interview! Did you hear me? Get that thing out of my face before I shove it up your Everything all right? You went kind of hard at that guy.
He's just trying to tell a good story.
Well, maybe not everbody wants their story told.
I guess it depends on what your story is.
You know sometimes I feel like you and I It's like we get each other.
Me, too.
Well, this is not one of those times.
Yo, what's up with her? Camera shy, I guess.
Hey, so, uh How'd it go with Minetti? I handled it.
That's great.
That's great, bro.
So we're all good, then.
Somehow, it doesn't seem "all good.
" Maybe we should come clean.
- Are you crazy? - If not to the cops, then at least to Bob.
What, you think he's just gonna forgive us? I can't sleep at night, Nicky! I hold my little girl or look in my son's eyes, I feel like a fake! How do you think I feel? I'm the one that hit him! Yeah, I admit it, all right? I panicked.
I did not want to go back to prison.
Bob trusted me.
When nobody else would, he gave me this job, and this is how I pay him back.
Look.
We did this together, all right? It's not like it's your fault.
No, it is.
There's something I didn't tell you.
Those guys that I went to jail for, I owe them a lot of money.
For what? Getting caught with their dope.
Thing is, I I convinced you to do the robbery, 'cause I knew you needed the money, but I needed it more.
Why are you telling me this? Maybe I don't want to be that guy anymore.
Matt's little brother, the screw-up.
This lottery thing it's like a second chance.
It's like the universe is telling me to to s to start doing the right thing.
Telling the truth is one of those things.
But it's not just about us anymore, Matt.
If we come clean, it ruins everything for everybody, especially Bob.
And what is the point in that? Hey.
You know, I've been thinking.
Not that it matters now, but you didn't vote against me, did you? Look at me.
We're blood.
Would a brother vote against his own brother? Hey.
What's in the bag? I'll give you a hint not strawberries.
Pastrami? Mm.
You're in the ballpark.
Baby, I have loved you, but never more than I do right now.
I am so over this hospital food.
- Ah! We have to talk.
- About what? About getting you to do something you've never done in all the years I've known you.
You'll resist.
You'll say you won't.
But if you want to wash a klein's corned-beef sandwich down Ooh.
With an egg cream from Zoba's And top it all off with a black and white cookie from Berman's, you'd better say yes.
To? A vacation.
One week in Bora Bora, in a little hut above the water.
With no TV? Cool, relaxing ocean breeze.
I'll hate every second of it.
Is that a yes? Eat your cookie.
- Mr.
Harris.
- Hey, doc.
We need to talk.
I didn't think you were gonna make it.
I had to be sure they were totally asleep.
I feel like a rebellious teenager.
A rich rebellious teenager who can now do whatever she wants with whoever she wants.
Let's dance.
Hey, you want to get out of here? Where to? Yo, I always dreamed of owning my own place, you know? Like a a club.
Real upscale.
It feels like anything's possible now, you know? Like, whatever we want.
I think I know what I want.
I don't know if I'm good enough.
What, at the violin? You're so talented.
You've never even heard me play.
All right, e every Tuesday night, when you're waiting for your dad to pick you up after work, sometimes I, uh I hide out in the garage.
Spying on me? What? No! Come on.
I'm not spying on you.
Just listening to you practice.
You play this one song I like a lot.
Which one? It goes real high like a like a siren, and you hit this one note, and all the oil cans start buzzin' like they're playing along.
Can I kiss you? There's got to be like 1,200 bucks here, Korzak! You out of your mind?! Look, can we just talk about it? No! Stop it! Please! Stop! Get off! I can get you the rest of your money, all right?! It won't be a problem now.
Shut up! Now that you won the lottery, we've adjusted the terms.
Yeah, you're gonna keep paying us till we tell you it's okay.
How's that sound, Nicky? - How's that sound?! - All right, all right, all right.
Douche.
Are you okay? I'm all right.
I've had worse.
Stay away, "Slumdog," if you know what's good for you! Yeah! She's got a hell of a jump shot.
About yesterday, I I didn't mean to push.
I didn't mean to snap.
Thing is, after we talked, I got to thinking about about the bunch of us, working here together all these years, e everybody knowing everything about everyone.
Everyone except you.
You never talk about your family, your home, or about Emma's dad.
And the way you've been avoiding the cameras, I don't know stuff is starting to not add up here.
What do you want from me, Matt? How about the truth? Oh, you always tell the truth? I know whatever happened, whatever you're going through No, you have no clue what I'm going through.
I know you're going through it alone! - I can handle it! - Can you?! Because it doesn't look that way.
Emma's not my daughter! I mean, she is my daughter, but she's not it's hard to explain.
Try.
I'm not her biological mother, okay? No, not okay.
I I I don't understand.
I fostered her since she was a baby.
When she came to me, she was sick.
Her birth mother was a drug addict.
I tried to adopt her.
Everything was set to go through, and then Her mother wanted her back.
And I found out she was still using.
But the system is so screwed up, they were gonna take Emma, anyway.
I just I couldn't let her go back to that.
So y you kidnapped her? I saved her.
You'd have done the same.
Police back home have been looking for us ever since.
Where's home? What difference does it make? If this lottery thing exposes us, we'll be found.
Keep a secret too long, it eats away at you.
It feels good to tell someone.
Mommy, I won! Great job, honey! Hey Hey, maybe we should just go home.
What? Why? You see that black eye our son's got? We got a cub scout thing.
Career day's coming up.
How can I show my face in his class? Baby, what is going on with you? The loser jokes, the teasing what if this is just the beginning? What if he'll never be able to live this lottery thing down? I just wanted him to be proud of me, but that's never gonna happen.
Look, you got nothing to be ashamed of.
I cursed the family name forever.
Look, can't we at least just talk about last night? Not right now.
- You're pissed.
- I'm not pissed.
I just can't talk.
They could have killed you! You don't kill a guy you're trying to get money from.
I should never have gone out with you.
- Oh, don't say that.
- I can't do this.
We're from two different worlds.
Your lemonade.
Thanks.
Naveed, this is Nicky.
We work together.
Cool.
Nice to meet you.
Pretty nasty shiner you got there, man.
What happened? I, uh, got into a fight over a girl.
You can't win 'em all, right? Hey, looking good, Denise.
Oh, whoa! Is that jelly? Oh, crap.
A little soda water, it'll come out, right? Screw it.
We'll buy you a new one.
I have got a personal shopper now.
Bob, you're here.
They let me out for the party.
Looks like the whole neighborhood turned out.
Yeah.
Listen, can we talk somewhere private? Sure.
Why don't we go inside? And get everybody I got something to say first.
I got some news yesterday, and I wanted you all to hear it from me first.
And don't go getting all mushy on me, either.
The doctors ran some tests, and, well, they found something.
Is it serious? I don't know if "serious" is the right word.
It, uh come on, Bob.
What is it? Well, it's it's, um How can I put this? Um It's, um It's a brain tumor.
Let's not ruin this great party, because as bad as it may sound at first, a wonderful thing happened here.
If those doctors hadn't been poking around in my noggin like that, they probably never would have found that tumor.
I could have dropped dead six months from now with no warning.
Now I got a fighting chance.
So to that guy who robbed this shop and conked me over the head with that bottle if he was here right now, I'd kiss that son of a bitch.
Hey, it's on, guys.
We saved Bob.
Yo, we saved Bob's life.
- Nicky - Why you always got to be so negative, bro? Embrace it.
It's like I told you.
Our luck is changing.
Lottery winners are familiar to all of us.
We see them everywhere, touched by fortune a few lucky people who share an uncommon bond.
They beat the odds when the odds were unbeatable.
They didn't show us yet.
Yeah, what a bummer.
But in this particular group, one person stands out.
Not a winner, perhaps, but certainly no loser by any means.
A hardworking mechanic who opted out of the pool several months ago, never imagining that the group would eventually go on to win.
Antonio Clemente the one left behind.
But as you'll see, he radiates a positivity and energy that is simply contagious.
What the hell? My father loved baseball.
I played baseball because of my father.
I remember going to Shea Stadium with my dad.
He'd been out of work for a year.
But he managed to scrape up enough money together because he wanted me to see the first great Latino major leaguer.
- Then, in the eighth inning That guy, he hits a home run so deep, so hard, that he almost knocked the head off Mr.
Met.
And my father, he's jumping up and down, and he's screaming, "mira palla! "That's what I'm talking about, Antonio! "That's him! That's Roberto Clemente! We are made of the same stuff that he is!" Number 21, the great Roberto Clemente.
Look what he accomplished.
Look what happened to him.
That's what I teach my kids.
Every day, I say to them, "don't worry.
There's something for us right around the corner.
" Words for us all to live by.
And considering the track records of lottery winners the perils and pitfalls they often face Well, the others may be considered the winners for the time being, but we'll check in with them a year from now.
And we'll also check in on grease monkey and mensch-about-town Antonio Clemente The eternal optimist of Ditmars Boulevard.
Whoo! What a great piece! I loved it! All right, Antonio.
Yeah, man.
Zeppole for everybody! Nice going, papi.
You got game.
Ooh.
So, uh, what did you want to talk to me about? It's nothing.
Doesn't even matter anymore.
Look at it.
The neighborhood all out, kids playing, everybody happy, laughing.
It's how I always imagined it.
You made it sound like the tumor's no big deal.
Oh, it's nothing, honey.
They'll fix it.
It's not nothing, Bob.
It could be everything.
Life turns on a dime, you know? And no denying I I've gotten some breaks, also made some mistakes, like anybody.
At the end of the day, all you can hope for is more good in your life than bad.
That's what I hope for, anyway, for me and my family, and, most of all, for my kids.
Whether you're a working stiff or a millionaire, I don't guess that ever changes.
Not much more to say than that.
Happy Birthday.
Parking citation.
Nicky Korzak.
His car got ticketed five blocks from Gold Star An hour after he says he drove to Brooklyn for his date.
We were right.
It was an inside job.
So how do you want to play it now? We turn the brothers against each other.
Ted! Coming down? I got wine! Hey, baby? You seen my cellphone? Maybe I left it in the kitchen.
