Making the Cut (2020) s01e02 Episode Script

Haute Couture

1
###
Alright, I heard Martha is struggling.
Where is she?
- She went outside.
- Martha left?
Does anyone know what's going on?
Okay, designers. Come on down!
- Hello.
- Hi.
- Hi, guys.
- Yes!
I'm just so excited for you guys.
Paris is the city of love.
And it's the city of haute couture.
Yes!
And we would be remiss to come to Paris
and not embrace the art of couture.
- Yes.
- Yes.
I have to add, though, haute couture
is the highest end of fashion.
It is constructed by hand
from start to finish,
made from high-quality, expensive,
and often unusual fabric.
Haute couture shows are meant
to give the designer an opportunity
to put their skills on display.
You mean to show off.
Yes, in a way.
More like show the world
the attention to detail
and craftsmanship that exists in their brand.
So, for your next collection,
we want you to show off.
We want you to create two looks.
One must be a couture-inspired,
artistic showstopper.
Yes.
The second look should be
a sellable interpretation of that look.
Two days from now,
you will be presenting your collections
in a fashion showcase
at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs
Oooh!
which is part of the Louvre Palace.
- It is an iconic fashion venue
- Oh, my God!
that has hosted
many fashion shows and exhibits.
- This is so exciting!
- I know it.
I'm really excited about the assignment,
especially after the judges have given me
all of their feedback,
to pump it up and make it even, like,
more crazy, more me.
I'm definitely up for the challenge.
As you know, the winning designer
will have his or her sellable look
sold exclusively
in the Making the Cut store on Amazon.
- I would want to win every week.
- Exactly!
And then take the million dollars
in the end.
- Right.
- And there's more.
For this assignment,
the winner will receive a feature
in Carine Roitfeld's fashion publication,
CR Fashion Book.
Carine Roitfeld is one of the most prominent
fashion figures in the business,
and the CR Fashion Book
is an amazing publication
which showcases the hottest,
newest, freshest designers.
This could be a total career changer
for any one of us.
We want you to explore Paris
soak up the romance,
soak up the glamour.
Good luck, everybody,
and I'll see you at the showcase.
- Thank you.
- Thank you!
###
- We're outside, we're alive.
- It's so good.
# Look around and see where we are #
# Is this Heaven, is this Mars #
# 'Cause I lose touch when you touch me #
# So, touch me again #
Wow.
Yves Saint Laurent
is my favorite designer.
There's a lot of inspiration here.
So, I'm really excited about that.
It feels like I'm getting a peek inside
the part of history that excites me most
in, like, the 20th century.
There's like a kinship.
It's like a spiritual walk for me,
seeing all this stuff.
I keep on thinking couture is like
big, beautiful, ruffly dresses.
I go there, and I see
the most beautiful outerwear
I've seen in my life.
This seals the deal for me,
for my idea for this challenge.
I was inspired by the Louvre,
like the pyramid itself.
I will kind of create like a negative space
into brown.
I will then screen an insertion
into something, like a hole, kind of,
which is like a weird word, but a hole.
I mean, if I'm shaping the future
with my fashion,
I think it's important that I am part of
the young generation that I design for.
And I don't believe in, like,
waiting for, like, what,
until I'm 30, and I'm, like, all
no offense dusty and crusty,
and I have, like, a house
and a boyfriend and a dog,
and I don't want to give everything up now?
I think I'm the youngest in the competition.
I did my fashion studies,
my Bachelor and my Master,
in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
It's one of the biggest fashion schools
in the world.
But now, I work at the hamburger place
to make extra money to fund my fashion.
I can sew a dress and make you a burger!
My brand's name is Sander Bos,
and, basically, it just started with me
having $200 in my bank account,
and I was like, look, I'm going to run it.
And it kind of went from there,
and it started growing and growing.
Yeah, and we're basically all over Europe.
I think my aesthetic is balls to the wall.
Congratulations!
You are so beautiful!
Heidi and Tim were talking about romance,
and it's so funny that we just come here,
and seeing a young, beautiful couple
taking pictures for their marriage.
And she had a beautiful dress.
I mean, it's not my style,
but that inspired me.
And the minute I took some pictures,
Josh, this cool guy with all these tattoos,
was crossing,
and it gave me a little, nice twist,
like mixing the very haute couture
with the edgy Berlin style.
It feels like being in the right moment
at the right spot.
We're at the Louvre, by the pyramids,
and all I see are all of these, like,
little diamonds, creating it,
and I'm just obsessed.
For my brand, I think an haute couture look
would be, you know,
a bunch of sequins, a bunch of sparkle,
just a lot of embellishment,
lots of volume, drama.
I see something already.
# Outside, inside, we don't stop #
# Go, go, worldwide, we don't stop #
Sable.
I should resist the urge.
Feathers can get you into trouble.
# Steal the show everywhere we go #
# Got a super ego but not a hero #
Are you doing sparkles for this?
- Yeah.
- Do it! Oh, my God.
- I just feel like
- Do it.
Usually, the couture thing
is not at all my thing,
because I don't have a customer for this,
but after winning the first assignment,
I can be a bit more risky,
so I think I will use sequins.
- I never did it before, but I no
- I think it's perfect.
If you say so, I'll do it.
# From the hoods to the block,
we don't stop #
Ooh, like, what are you? What are you?
So, because this is couture,
I feel like I need to use nicer fabrics
He thinks it's very interesting.
more embellishments, like,
more just intricate work.
So, my sketches had
a little bit of lavender in it,
so, when I saw this, I was like,
"Yeah, we're gonna go that direction."
And, I mean, this is so me.
This is LSU Tigers,
but, like, high-fashioncouture.
We're gonna put a little gingham in there.
Go big or go home.
Don't want to be going home.
It was very close last time.
Today, it's all about my mother,
because I recently,
not even two weeks ago, lost her.
And, uh, she always believed in me.
So, today, I want to challenge myself
into making something
that I never did.
So, it's gonna be elegant,
like my mother was.
Her presence is fading into a memory.
I will have to accept that, and, um
and transform that into strength,
because she would want me to be strong.
###
- Hello, good sir. Hey.
- Hi, y'all. Hey.
That's a fun shape.
Like, something Björk would wear.
This is me doing haute couture,
so it's like, I'm already, like,
a little bit on the fantasy side of fashion.
- You're gonna go there.
- Bitch, clearly.
I'm just gonna keep kind of playing around
with what I bought
and figure out how I want to do it.
I didn't realize
how much purple was in it.
That is just a lot of purple leopard.
Originally, this Ella shoe leopard print
was, like, really cool and really fun
and very me,
but once I see it all laid out,
this is not gonna make something cool.
I scrapped the purple and gold.
Time is ticking for Martha,
so there's really no time
to just kind of spin in circles.
Working with sequins is my way
of pushing me harder,
because I think it's important
to show a development.
Who told me
that you worked in a circus?
Like the costume designer?
Stilt walker. Fire dancer.
That's how I learned how to sew.
We were traveling on tour,
and they were like,
"No one's gonna fix your costume."
Like, there was a machine,
a sewing machine on the bus.
I was never classically trained.
I never went to school.
I wish I did, you know?
But I actually started off in the circus.
On tour is where I learned how to sew.
And after that, I started my brand,
SKINGRAFT.
Born and raised in downtown Los Angeles.
I've been doing it for, like,
almost 15 years.
It's dark, it's directional,
it's kind of progressive streetwear.
I make everything in leather.
That's how I do it.
Leather, leather, leather.
It's strong, it's kind of freaky,
it's in your face.
And it used to just be for, like,
circus performers.
Now, watching celebrities
and taste makers wear my designs
has been so thrilling and has helped
to build SKINGRAF
into a recognized brand.
What I do is big.
I think big. I do collections. I do shows.
I do pop shops. I do campaigns.
This is how I've succeeded as a designer.
This is super exciting for me right now.
I feel like I'm at
this very pivotal moment in my life.
Five years ago, I wasn't ready.
I'm ready now.
I'm working on my couture look
right now.
It needs to be perfect,
because I feel like I almost had a win
in the last assignment,
so, I feel like I've got to go
even harder this time.
###
Oh my God, we have an hour left.
I have to have everything ready
for the seamstress pickup.
Ahhh!
But I can do it.
I scrapped the purple and gold,
and now, I'm looking at my other stuff,
and I really, really love this blue gingham.
My idea with it is to make a top.
I need to get something out
to the seamstress.
I have no idea what I'm going to do
for my second look.
I'm really struggling with that one,
but I'll figure it out.
###
This is so exciting.
- I know, the Moulin Rouge.
- I know.
I think the last time I was here,
I was maybe 17.
Honestly, Tim, I feel like
with a bit of training,
I could possibly do that.
Heidi, I have no doubt about that.
###
- It's so romantic to do this with you, Tim.
- I know.
Oh, my God. This is titillating.
You retained the word.
Tim, you know
I have to do this, right?
- You have to do this.
- I have to.
Fabulous.
###
# It all starts #
# With one spark #
Hey, hey, hey!
- Pants.
- Wow! My trousers is done!
- Mine too!
- Congratulations, everybody.
- That is hot.
- It came together.
# to guide the way #
# Be who you are #
Our assignment is to create two looks
based on haute couture.
One look needs to be a showstopper,
and the other look needs to be
a sellable look.
I've got this, like,
fun gingham top
but I've got to make two looks.
So, I decide to go back to the fabric store.
Mm, it's really, really pretty.
I'll make 60 euros for you for one fabric.
Perfect.
Merci!
I need the fabric to really speak for me.
Do you have anything else
with, like, a bunch of texture?
I love pink
I know that I can make something great
with these fabrics.
And I just, like, have to get re-inspired.
Good morning, everyone.
- Hello.
- Good morning. - Hi.
- Sabato. Hi.
- Hi, Tim. How are you today?
I have to say,
I love the entire head-to-toe look.
Oh, thank you, Tim.
I'm not the best, I'm sorry,
but I'm challenging myself today.
Well, it's not a sewing competition.
But I want to do it.
That's my challenge today.
If my mother, she would see it,
she would say, "You can do it."
You can do it.
But, you know, Tim, a couple of weeks ago,
I lost my mother.
- Oh, I'm so sorry.
- And that's devastating.
It is devastating.
I've lost both my parents.
- Yeah. So, you understand.
- I do.
- But I lost my parents, but my mom
- Yeah, it's very special.
It's very special.
So, what it is, is my mother, she comes from
a very conservative southern Italian family.
So, they didn't want her to marry my father.
Oh.
- So, she never had a wedding dress.
- Oh, so she eloped.
So, I see my mother's wedding dress.
I love that.
That she never had.
- I love that.
- It's very special.
Esther!
So, tell me what you're doing.
So, the first one will be a dress,
and it will have a fabric
I never used before.
- What is it?
- Sequins.
- You have sequins?
- Yes.
I loved it, so, and it's graphical.
It will have a long skirt like this,
and then on top of that,
there will be black too.
Okay. Alright. It's couture.
And then, the second look
comes with trousers.
This is my second,
more commercial look there.
The sequins,
I don't know how to sew them.
So, I'm a bit nervous about
if I will be able to finish in time.
Okay, so, I'm working on
my couture look right now.
All the seams here were sewn inside out,
and then I fringed all of them.
So, for my accessible look,
I'm just gonna make a dress version
or a jumpsuit version.
Like, I haven't really decided yet, but
- Think about that more accessible piece.
- Okay.
- But don't overthink it.
- Okay.
I am rapturous about this look.
When you think about accessibility
and relatability and reduction
Reduction, yeah.
This is a serious contender.
She's been let loose and free
- Got it.
- and she has escaped that.
- I think they're good companion pieces.
- I pushed it here
And you should. It's the couture outfit.
Less is more more is more.
And that fits in with the couture.
This was to be a garment
that she was going to wear
because she wants to make
her fiancé jealous who's left her.
I love this. It's a real "screw you."
Martha, this looks like you.
I'm really pumped about it.
So, this will be the top for this
once this is finished and this is tucked,
and then there's some of this coming off.
Your thoughts?
This looks like she's going
to the Oscars
- Mm-hmm
- This
looks as though she dressed up a little
to go milk the cows.
- This is the gingham. Yeah.
- Yeah. You don't like the gingham.
- Well, it brings it down.
- Yeah. Yeah.
- And this is so up.
- No, this is so up. I yeah.
I see that, for sure.
And I'm just so happy to see Martha.
What's that?
Oh, this fabulous
they only had one yard, so
- Well, this looks very you.
- Yeah.
But I just like this over anything
is so me.
Like, this might be my other look.
So, the second look,
the more accessible look, will be a dress?
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
- Alright. You have a lot to do.
- Mm-hmm.
- Okay, carry on.
- Okay. Thank you.
Thank you.
I have a few hours left and, like,
I better pull it together,
because I can't sew.
Jonny.
- Hi, Tim.
- I am intrigued.
So, I'm taking my idea of a leather jacket,
and I'm draping this long, silk-satin
kind of caped-winged back to it.
I feel really excited about it.
What's the more accessible look?
The fitted kind of leathery, rubbery pant.
It will be topped
with this chic kimono-type top,
long and black.
Is there something that takes
the kimono jacket away
from just being a kimono?
Um, just kind of the way I'm cutting it.
It has these, like, big vents
on the side and
- Okay.
- it's, um
it's reminiscent of how I would dress.
- Yeah.
- Okay.
- Alright, Jonny. Thank you.
- Thank you.
Wow, Sander.
It's a calm look for today.
So, talk to me.
We're thinking about positive-negative space.
Yeah, positive-negative space.
- And these donuts go all the way around.
- Yeah, they go all the way around.
- It goes all the way around.
- Oh, it's noisy.
- What's inside, pattern paper?
- Paper, yeah.
Okay. So, let's talk about
the more accessible look.
- It's a short dress and kind of has, like
- Oh, this is a dress?
- Yeah, it's very short.
- I'll say.
As Heidi would say, or ask,
is this Fallopian?
- What is "Fallopian"?
- Meaning, you can see the vagina?
No! No, no, no, no.
It should hit like I put it on,
and with me, it hits right here.
I'm looking at where it hits you.
Oh.
It's short.
And the only real association that I see
that connects these two looks
is the color.
It is the color and the idea of having
the cutouts with things coming out of it,
so therefore, the feathers.
Yeah, there's some DNA that they share.
- Alright, Sander.
- Thank you.
Thank you.
Alright, designers. I can't wait to see
our fashion showcase.
Alright, I'll see you tomorrow, everyone.
Work hard.
Bye.
I scrapped the gingham, which, like,
the seamstress has worked
the entire night on,
but now my couture look is going to be
the metallic, fringy fabric,
and there's just going to be
a strapless dress.
And then, for my more accessible look,
I end up choosing
to work with this pink fringe fabric.
I can't sew, so I need to see
if I can pull this off.
Hey, Rinat. The new Celine bag.
###
# Yo, I said I do it like this #
# And my brother who wanted this #
# Got a lot of mothers and lovers
I want to kiss #
# 'Cause I'm bliss
You don't want to end up on my list #
# I'm a killer #
- These are big, yeah.
- Kind of.
Putting it on their body got me
more excited about the aesthetic
and more real about
how much work has to get done.
# Na na na na na na na
Na na na na #
I have trousers.
They are tight, but they do fit.
# Said I go, go, go #
Oh, that is hot, Sander.
Sander's work is it's amazing.
I appreciate that someone can take the risk
to do something like that.
We're gonna see a little bit of your ass.
- Is that okay?
- That's okay.
I'm so happy I'm
showing legs, baby.
I don't think it's too short.
The model doesn't think it's too short.
I mean, her hoo-ha is not out.
But I'll give it a few inches
just for Tim's you know satisfaction.
Okay, put your arms down.
I was a bit freaked,
because the accessible look
wasn't really fitting correctly.
My couture look is so good.
# Steppin' on a stage #
Category is
# and everybody in the crowd's
like, "Go, go, go" #
# 'Cause when I get a mic
and I start to flow #
Yes, I love it! Ooh!
I'm definitely
looking around the room.
I love fringe.
I'm comparing myself
to all the people around me,
and I'm seeing everyone else sewing,
like, further ahead of me.
I really do start to second guess
everything that I am doing.
I love my fabric, but I'm just, like, trying
to figure out where to go from here.
Not being a sewer and not really knowing
how that whole process works
I'm a little worried for Martha.
- Having a moment?
- Yeah.
I mean, I've been having a moment
for like five days.
Okay. What's up?
I have two dresses,
exactly the same fabric.
Like, same idea, just awesome fabric.
Like, I can't sew them.
And I'm not going to touch it.
I don't want to.
I think Martha is feeling
the pressure of not being able to sew.
I think, since her style is so eclectic,
there's ways to work around it.
Well, it doesn't help being next to Esther.
She's doing this big, beautiful,
gorgeous gown.
So good.
- No, it's not.
- It's so good.
# Ooh #
# Once upon a time, I thought
we'd make it to the show #
I don't know.
I just kind of, like,
hit this breaking point.
You don't realize your breaking point
until you hit it.
And this environment
is just not great for me,
so it just doesn't make sense
for me to be here.
I am dying. I'm done.
We are working against the clock
right now,
so, I feel so much for Martha.
I know what that feeling feels like,
where you're, like, spinning out.
Alright, I heard Martha is struggling.
Where is she?
- She went outside.
- Martha left?
She went
people followed her right now.
Does anyone know what's going on?
###
Martha, tell me what's happening.
I would love to be able to make
a Martha dress for y'all,
but I can't do that, because I can't sew it.
So, like, I can only just pin it in cool ways
'cause it's cool fabric, so it
But the seamstresses are here to sew.
If you pin with precision, they can sew it.
I know, but, it's just, it takes me so long.
Everyone else is so much further ahead.
Don't look at everyone else.
I don't know, I feel like I'm just, like
It's been very dramatic, and I just
I don't know.
You are your own worst enemy.
I just see an individual
who's filled with fabulous ideas,
and it makes me sick to think
that you would just throw your hands up
and say, "I'm out of here."
One runway show at a time.
I'm worried for Martha.
She's just, like, getting in her head.
There's not much
that I can do tonight.
I've got to get these things
to the seamstress
to hem the gown, the couture gown.
- Oh, my God, I'm so excited!
- - Aww!
Tim has the best surprise for me.
I get to perform with the Moulin Rouge!
###
- Heidi
- Oh, my God.
- Look at this.
- Hi, everybody.
Hi!
Tim, I have to say, off the get-go,
this is the most exciting thing
that you've done for me.
How did you make this happen?
I had the ladies help me.
Yes!
Pa da da ba!
Are these my feathery wings?
Yes, they are.
###
Heidi, it's a standing ovation!
- Yay!
- Fabulous!
I think I'm gonna have to go
to the hospital now.
###
Morning!
Good morning.
Show day.
Yes!
It's ready.
I just have to add some things to it.
I got my tech pack back
with the finished garment,
and for this one, I asked her to hem
two layers of the fringe,
and then I didn't take off any of the body
and volume,
just because I kind of like it chunky.
And my other I didn't send the other,
'cause I really I like the frayed edges.
I think that adds to it.
So, I didn't want to hem this one,
and that was a strategic choice.
After my outside Tim talk from yesterday,
I'm feeling optimistic.
Fastest fingers, fastest fingers.
###
I still have a lot to do, so
again, I need every second.
Alright, so I've just got to pin this,
and then we're good. Alright. Cool.
Maybe a little more red.
Big bun. Yeah.
So, they'll just go just like this.
Do you have more safety pins, Martha?
Yeah, I'm gonna bring
all that I have. I have a bunch.
###
# All I want to say to you #
# Is I'll do me, and you do you #
# You know I got to be true #
# Am I getting through to you? #
Like, if you feel like your butt's showing,
like, make sure to pull it down.
- I just hope this stays up.
- Yeah.
Pray. Pray. Pray.
- Thank you, guys. Let's kill it.
- Thank you. Let's kill it, yes.
Boom!
Bonjour, bonjour, bonjour.
Welcome to our fashion showcase.
And welcome to
the Musée des Arts Décoratifs,
part of the Louvre Palace.
Each designer created two looks
one couture-inspired, and the other,
more accessible and sellable.
And let us introduce you
to our lovely judges.
Creative director of Altuzarra,
Joseph Altuzarra.
Unquestionably one of
the most influential figures in fashion,
Carine Roitfeld.
Entrepreneur and creative director
of House of Harlow 1960,
Nicole Richie.
Supermodel and fashion icon Naomi Campbell.
This showcase is about couture and romance.
- Yes.
- Alright? Let's start the show.
###
I'm nervous.
I am, too.
Wow.
It's breathtaking.
That's couture.
Love.
This is very pretty.
There's something very modern about it.
I love the look, the hairdo.
I think it's very chic.
There is a point of view.
- This really makes sense as a sister.
- Yes.
I love it. I love everything.
And the two of them make sense together
I love how it makes
the waist look tiny. Tiny, tiny.
I would love this dress to be a bit longer,
so we don't have
- And then no pants.
- And no pants.
Pants, I agree. Hear, hear.
Oh, my God!
- # We were staying in Paris #
- Oh, my God!
# To get away from your parents,
and I thought, wow #
# If I could take this in a shot right now #
# I don't think that we could work this out #
- # Out on a terrace #
- This is beyond gorgeous.
# I don't know if it's fair,
but I thought, how #
- It's pretty.
- # Could I let you fall by yourself #
- I really like it.
- It's very flattering.
# If we go down, then we go down together #
- Beautiful.
- # Let's show them we are better #
This I love.
I love both.
# Let's show them we are better #
# We're staying in Paris #
These lines are beautiful
down the front.
I love the spider's web.
# Getting there with a frown
and a cigarette #
# Posting pictures of yourself
on the internet #
# Out on the terrace #
- Beautiful job.
- Oh, thank you.
Beautiful.
There's an interesting shoulder.
There's like an athletic quality.
I definitely think a lot of people
could wear this.
- Yeah. I do too.
- I love it.
It's way too short.
No, I love it.
It's beautiful.
Really? I was so nervous
about this look.
Why?
I just, like,
doubt myself.
I die for this.
This is couture.
That fringe is really labor-intensive.
I think it would look good
on anyone, frankly.
Yeah.
- I think even I could pull it off.
- I would love to see it on you.
- Great for men and women.
- It's so chic.
# If we go down, then we go down together #
I think there's obviously a fit issue,
there's construction issues
There's many issues.
# If we go down, then we go down together #
What's the next one?
I think it just feels quite old.
I'm not putting my mother in that outfit.
- This poor girl has no split.
- No.
I mean, it's my nightmare
not to have a split.
It looks so painful.
If you fit this onto your model,
and you see that she's walking like this
- You would split it.
- Because it's not modern.
- But then look at this one.
- Much better.
I think this is quite nice,
the way this is done here.
It's flattering on her.
But you know what I love about this dress,
what my favorite thing is?
Is the way it's fitted to the body.
# Let's show them we are better #
# If we go down, then we go down together #
Very elegant.
Very simple, but probably
very difficult to do, no?
Yeah, simple is more difficult,
because it has to be perfection.
# Let's show them we are better #
# We're staying in Paris #
# If we go down #
My mother, I always feel
her presence, every moment.
I'm going to dedicate this to her.
She would be so proud.
Ahh it's so pretty in the back.
Bellissima .
Your mother would be
so proud of you.
# Let's show them we are better #
# We're staying in Paris #
- Aww, that's breathtaking.
- Yeah, isn't it?
- This I love.
- Me too.
The shape is beautiful.
The color is beautiful.
I think the simplicity gives you
a lot of chic to that dress.
Almost like a t-shirt material.
- That's what I don't like about it.
- Oh, yeah.
I like this too. I don't know how
they go together, to be honest with you.
Well, I love the top.
No, the jacket is nice,
but I always have to say,
I probably have four of those in my closet.
- And this?
- No.
It kind of looks like a bath mat.
A jersey with anything, like,
you just have to have it be what it is.
Yeah, and leave it alone,
but not stick the thick fabric over it.
Next.
Don't they're still walking.
What is this?
Oh, no, no, no. No, no, no.
It's very simple.
I mean, this, unfortunately, to me,
just looks like he's wearing a robe.
I think the cutting is nice.
It is forgettable.
There is something interesting,
but not for couture, really.
But there is something interesting.
I like the mix.
He's known for these,
like, rock 'n' roll jackets.
That's his vibe,
and that's the kind of stuff he does.
- Well, then, this is who he is.
- Well, he's true to who he is.
It's not my aesthetic,
and it's not couture in any way.
- Yeah.
- They have to understand
that they have to have respect.
- But is it your least favorite of the day?
- It's pretty down there.
You did it.
- You did it.
- Oh, God.
I know what I've been through
the past couple days,
and I just I feel really proud of myself.
You would never know
that I'd just pinned these up,
and they all just came together.
This looks like it was just
wrapped around the body.
- I like this dress.
- The finishing is not great.
- I don't like brown, and I don't mind it.
- It's sloppy.
You see this lining right there?
It's not done well.
But at least she has imagination.
- I can make that dress.
- I think it's fun.
I don't like it.
- What do we have here?
- We know immediately who that is.
Hideous, with sprouts
coming out of your shoulders.
I think it's done well.
I think the finishes are nice.
- Nicole.
- The cutting's good.
I think it's cute.
I mean, it's spectacular.
- But it's wearable.
- Yeah.
It's too loud.
But it's done well. I like it.
I'm sorry, I don't like it at all.
I'm excited about what's coming next.
Well, well, well.
What do we call this?
There is no name for it.
Not everything needs to have a name.
- Yes.
- Donut.
The only thing I don't love
is the hole in between the legs.
The birth canal.
I'm here for it,
but other than that
I love this one.
I'm not into it.
Alright, everyone. Let's go mingle,
and let's look at some amazing fashion.
I know you guys don't like this,
but I like it.
The only thing I don't love
is this here in the middle.
Yeah.
It was too obvious
of a donut hole. Yeah.
This is also stripe sequins,
which I find the detail is really pretty.
- Chic, chic, chic.
- It's very pretty.
Okay, here we have something
you don't want to look up close.
Up close, she does not look good.
It's very messy. Oh, wow.
What is that?
- It really doesn't look good up close.
- No.
We want to feel this fabric.
It is light.
- Wow, this was what Yeah, it's nice.
- I love this.
- It's also done so well.
- This is light. Also light.
Yes, it is.
This is a
Yeah, it's like a neo cream.
- Very nice.
- This is very nice.
I like it. Is it a jeans?
This is nice.
I actually like the pants
with the seam like that, on the outside.
- This is very nice.
- I love it.
Can I see the back?
- Beautiful. I like the simplicity of it.
- I do too.
That's what I love about it.
See, you can tell, like,
there's no breast start.
I'm a little sad about it.
Oh, my God, it's Heidi?
There are also, like, safety pins through it.
Is there any sewing on it?
This is a design competition,
so you have to design clothing,
not just wrap fabric around models.
So, there's no zipper.
No buttons, no zipper.
- It was just fabric that was wrapped around.
- Oui.
Well, I want to see this.
Can I see this?
It's just wrapped.
With safety pins.
- Safety pins?
Yeah, look.
- Not good.
- It's not good.
We have to talk to Martha.
It's a little lazy.
I can't wait to ask her
what happened here.
Any of us could go home.
So, I'm a little on edge.
Going into elimination on edge
is not where you want to be.
- Hello there!
- Hi!
Well, great fashion show, designers.
Thank you.
As you know, we're here to find the designer
who can create the next great global brand.
The designer behind the brand
is just as important
as the clothes that walk the runway.
We're looking for a fashion designer
and an entrepreneur.
As you know, the winning look
will be available immediately on Amazon,
in the Making the Cut store.
The winner will also receive a feature
in Carine's CR Fashion Book,
one of the biggest fashion publications
in the world.
And I want to remind you that at any time,
one or more of you can go home.
We discussed each of your mini collections.
Based on the fashion show,
we made some decisions,
but they're not necessarily final.
We have some thoughts
and some questions for some of you.
A conversation can change everything.
Sander. Come on over.
- Hi, guys.
- Hello.
Hello.
So, tell us about what you showed us today.
Well, we went for the inspiration
to the Louvre,
and I saw the new shape of the pyramid,
kind of like the modern-day had sculpted
into something
that was classical and traditional.
And I took the same approach
with my haute couture dress.
So, I worked with the positive silhouette,
and then, basically, the negative silhouette,
I wanted to highlight it
between the legs and between the two arms.
And then I rolled into
the more sellable look,
which kind of also translated the idea
of the distortion of the silhouette,
but then more in a kind of younger way
and a little more wearable.
For me, couture is about to be perfection.
I think with your dress, I talk the big one,
you make an entrance dress.
You cannot miss you. This is impossible.
But I don't like so much the noise
the dress makes when you are walking.
But this is a very French point of view.
I loved the couture one.
I thought it was really cool.
- Thank you.
- Because I also told you guys,
make one showstopper
- Guilty.
- And that was a showstopper.
That is so memorable.
I mean, I definitely will not forget this.
I also love how gutsy you were.
I mean, yes, some people made
the donut reference in the front,
but, still, it had so many beautiful detail
here and there.
I don't know, I really liked it.
Your outfit was not for me, but I appreciate
the workmanship that went into it.
I actually liked your accessible piece.
Um, I thought the fit was really nice.
You have such an amazing imagination.
I think it's going to be trying to understand
how to apply that to a real customer.
I actually didn't love
your accessible look that much,
because I also think it's very hard
to live and wash this dress
because of all the feathers.
Okay, judges. Have any of you
changed your mind?
No.
Sander
you're making the cut.
Thank you!
Martha, we'd like to talk to you next.
- Hello.
- Hello. - Hi.
Martha, tell us about the mini collection
that you created.
Yeah, so, the two fabrics that I chose,
I got the second day,
because I chose different fabrics
and a whole different look originally.
- You hated it and you scrapped it?
- Yeah.
- So you lost a day?
- Yep.
Last critique that y'all gave me,
y'all said really go for it and pump it up,
so I really wanted to switch it up
and go big or go home for this one.
So, once I found those two new fabrics,
I just wanted to make sure
that I could pin it and get it looking good
and kind of do my vision.
- Did you just say "pin it"?
- Yes.
We saw that.
- Yeah.
- Can I see your dresses?
- Sure.
- Thank you.
Okay.
Which one would you like to see?
The first one. The first that came out.
Yeah, so I just saw
the pin has already come out.
'Cause I pinned it up on her.
- So, is this sewn at all?
- No.
- No sewing.
- No sewing. Zero.
- So, this is just fabric and pins.
- Mm-hmm.
I have to say,
I thought they were fun.
They're definitely memorable pieces.
But now seeing that it's just
a piece of fabric wrapped around,
I'm kind of like hmm.
With couture,
there's a certain respect you have to have.
I mean, it goes back centuries,
and it's just
I feel like you disrespected
the whole entire word and
and this assignment,
because we can all pin a wrap.
You really just kind of hid behind
choosing colorful fabrics, you know?
That's not what this competition is.
That's not why you're here.
That's not representative of the skill
and the capabilities
that we all know that you have.
And it doesn't really represent you well
as a businesswoman either.
I loved what I put out there,
because I was so happy that I just did it
and got it, and they ended up
looking so good on them,
and I was just very proud
that it came together
and I had something for them to walk in.
Tim, do you want to share
any insight with us?
Well, I don't believe I'm betraying
a confidence by saying
that Martha has
you have a lot of self-doubts.
Yeah.
And those self-doubts tend to derail you.
- And those derailments affect the outcome.
- Yeah.
Clearly, you know how to dress yourself,
and you know what your style is,
and you know who your woman is.
And so, doubting yourself
and doubting who you are
can be one of the worst things
that could happen to you
- Right.
- as a designer.
And that's concerning.
Judges, have you changed your mind?
- No.
- No.
Martha
I'm sorry, but you're not making the cut.
Totally understand. Thank y'all so much.
This was so great.
Bye, y'all.
This was so, so hard and so grueling.
I mean, I could have done something amazing,
and I just, like, couldn't,
'cause I, like,
could not get out of my head.
I'm sad to leave, but I can't wait to go home
and see my kids.
It's hard to see someone go,
but as a reminder,
more than one person can go at any time.
Jonny, we want to talk to you next.
Hi.
Hi, there. So, Jonny,
tell us about your fashion show,
your two looks
that you sent down the runway today.
Uh, my first look, I wanted to take
the idea of a leather jacket
and transform it into my fantasy of what
that could look in a couture silhouette.
So, I draped this, like,
long silk cape in the back
and matched it with this, like,
very heavy jersey, fitted, draped skirt.
Once you walk, it kind of pssh open up.
And my second look
was an oversized cotton kimono, with,
like, a leather, fitted motorcycle pant.
I'm going to be
very honest here again.
I wasn't impressed with your outfits, both.
Start with the second.
That, for me, is like what I wear
when I go to the hairdresser.
And the same with the jacket.
It's just a bit too street for me.
It was not inspiring.
I think you don't understand
the word couture.
For me, it was not couture.
It's a respect towards the word couture.
You can envision it your way,
but you have to keep it at a certain level.
I think that my construction
definitely suffered today.
I kind of feel like that was
the plus point about yours.
I thought the construction actually was
pretty good.
- I don't think there was anything
- Bad.
wrong.
- You know, it's not like
- But it's just blah.
No, no, no, there's nothing wrong,
it's just it's just not new.
And I think stepping into
such a crowded space as leather,
it's really finding your identity
within that.
Yeah, because I think the challenge is
there's so much noise,
you know, there are so many designers,
how do you stand out?
Maybe it is time for you to part
from that jacket
that you've been doing for so long.
I feel like there's more inside of you
that you have to bring out.
Yeah.
Memorable is what you want.
People to remember.
My approach to this was
do what you love, and kill it.
I didn't kill it.
But I did what I love,
and I do have a strong voice.
And I have an entrepreneurial spirit.
And I have had a lot of success
with my brand.
And with the access to a global market,
I am confident that I can introduce
something new and exciting to the world.
Judges, have any of you changed your mind?
No.
Jonny
You're making the cut.
- Yes!
- Whoo!
You're going to remain in the competition.
You know, I got my ass handed to me
by Naomi Campbell.
You know? It's like, hey, she's seen it all,
she's done it all, she's worn it all.
So, read me. You know?
If you see the imperfection, read me.
I don't care. I can handle it.
Esther. Let's chat.
Hallo, hallo.
- Hi.
- Hi, Esther.
Esther, we feel like we know a bit
about your brand already.
Tell us about what you showed us today.
So, I went to the Louvre,
and then I took pictures
of this couple getting married.
And then, Josh just passed my pictures.
So, this is my inspiration, actually,
with the mix of both of them.
I loved both your outfits.
I felt a lot of strength from your woman.
Very empowered,
confidence, all the things
that we want women to feel.
And your line was clean,
the aesthetic, I loved the hair.
It was elegant and graceful
but yet very modern.
This is, for me, a perfect example
of a new way of couture.
Your execution is so strong.
Even when you're telling me about the wedding
and then seeing Josh,
I see those two blended together.
- It's very cool.
- Thank you.
Your dress for me is total couture,
both of them.
Honestly, I can really see them immediately
on the runway,
and you already have the idea
for the makeup and the hair.
This is a total look.
Esther
You are today's winner.
Again!
Congratulations!
Thank you. I'm really happy.
- This means a lot to me.
- Isn't this exciting?
Yeah, it's crazy.
This look is available right now
on the Making the Cut store on Amazon.
Thank you.
You'll also receive a feature
in Carine's CR Fashion Book.
- Congratulations.
- - Thank you.
Happy to have you in our pages.
- Thank you. Looking forward.
- Thank you to you.
- Thank you, Esther.
- Thank you.
To win two challenges
after each other, feels a bit crazy,
but it feels it feels amazing.
Long time ago, the young 12-year-old Esther
wanted to become a fashion designer,
thinking of Paris and the Paris Vogue.
And now, I have this feature
in Carine Roitfeld's book.
It means a lot to me,
and I know it will mean a lot for my
for my future.
Ji, come forward.
We're not quite done.
Aww, okay.
Hi.
I have a surprise for you.
Yeah?
We had a member from Amazon Fashion
at the show today,
and she was so taken by your look
that they want to also make it available
on Amazon.
So, everyone can buy
your white dress right now as well.
Awesome.
See, you never know who's watching
and what's happening around here.
- Thank you so much.
- Thank you.
Thank you.
Yeah!
Crazy that this white dress
is now available worldwide,
and millions of people will see it
and be able to buy it.
Even that is just career-changing.
Okay, everybody.
You're also making the cut.
You're going to remain in the competition.
Drinks on me.
This season on Making the Cut
# Yes, it's a million-dollar life #
# Yes, it's a million-dollar #
This is adorable.
The movement on this
is beautiful.
Yes! Stepped it up.
- Beautiful.
- - I love that it gives you
that surprise in the back.
# We don't apologize #
It feels like they had a vision.
He's showing us what he's good at.
Oh, my God. Look what you did.
###
There's a million dollars at stake.
I'll split the million dollars with you.
Oh, my God,
you think you're gonna win.
And they're not going to give it
to any designer
The stress is getting to me.
who doesn't demonstrate
that they have fight.
Oh, wait one sec.
I just feel a little, like, betrayed.
And I mean an intense fire in your belly.
You have to have this.
You can't do anything else
unless you do have this.
I've had a problem with you
for every assignment.
I have to be very honest.
We all think of the fashion industry
as being about glamour,
but we also know it's about a lot of grit.
You don't realize
your breaking point until you hit it.
Maybe certain people
can't handle the pressure.
This studio's not big enough for all of us.
I have not seen anything
that I personally want to have.
But I think it's gone to recipe of disaster.
I don't know who would want to have it.
And I believe in you.
Esther, don't be afraid.
Everything you want
is on the other side of here.
I know you have the fight.
I have to put my foot down to the judges.
I know you have the fire.
Wow!
That is beautiful.
So, cut through the noise!
# I want to be a star #
Fear is very necessary to grow.
I have to give this 2,000%,
because I am fighting for my life right now.
Winning this could change my life.
I feel like I've kind of been
in this cocoon process,
kind of preparing myself for, like,
this metamorphosis.
Don't send me home!
###
I'm already, like, a little bit
on the fantasy side of fashion.
- So, you're gonna go there.
- Bitch, clearly.
###
I loved both your outfits.
I felt a lot of strength from your woman.
- It's a fantasy, though, and I love it.
- It is so beautiful.
###
Makin' the fool.
I've been pushing my boundaries
and really proving to myself
that I can do anything.
I'm fine, no matter what the judges will say.
If any of you have changed your mind
- I've changed my mind.
- I've changed my mind.
I want to give you another chance.
###
Congratulations, you're making the cut.
###
I'm going to build
a new generation of fashion.
