- Hey! - FREDDY: Typical.
Big noter.
GIDGET: Hi.
If we lose sponsors because of an inappropriately dressed floozy, you can explain your sense to the board.
Are you kidding, Edwina? Gidget's a definite plus for our sponsors.
Who's that continental-looking man? Carlo Liotti, talent management and I suspect he has his eye on Gidget.
Ha, talent manager.
Is that what he calls it? (SCREAMING AND CHEERING) WOMAN: We love you! Duane! Duane! WOMAN 2: Duane! OK, you don't want to take my advice.
- How about you give me my money back? - Bugger off.
No, you either give me my money or my car back.
DUANE: No way, I like it too much.

To open the show tonight with his song, "Hangin' Five", zooming up the charts - Duane Gordon.
("HANGIN' FIVE" BY THE DELTONES PLAYS) (CHEERING) Ah well, it's early in the morning And it's time to make a start And I put my polished surfboard on the rack upon my car I head down to the surf side, where the waves are breakin' fine I'm gonna catch a mountain but I won't go down the mine You've got to walk the plank - (PEREGRINE SINGING ALONG) Ride the hook Corner left and right and keep it nice and tight And now the time is growing near You're movin' down the wall Now, steady as she goes You've got your toes upon the nose And now you hangin' five, hangin' five Hangin' five toes - (PEREGRINE SINGING ALONG) Upon the Malibu (CHEERING) And now you've hit the beach and you're feeling mighty fine You turn your board around for the second time You make out the back The swells are coming fast The first ones are too small (BUZZING) (CROWD GASPING) (BUZZING) (TENSE MUSIC PLAYS) (GASPING AND CLAMOURING) (GASPS) They're dead! (AUDIENCE GASPING) (CLAMOURING) Eric! AUTOMATED VOICE: We apologise for this break in transmission.
And we'll restore normal (60'S-INSPIRED THEME MUSIC PLAYS) (CHATTER) BLACKMAN: Gentlemen, can you move over, please? Let the ambulance through, please.
Look, you cannot You must stay here, thank you very much.
Nobody moves past this line.
Nobody is allowed in the studio at all! MAN: We want an explanation.
There will be a statement tomorrow by the studio.
Until such time, please wait (SPY MUSIC PLAYS) (EXHALES) (INDISTINCT BACKGROUND CHATTER) ERIC: You're here.
Oh, thank god you're OK.
Anyone would think you still care about me.
Hey.
God, this is awful.
Duane Gordon and that poor girl.
I did the wiring.
Oh, Eric! It was all by the book.
(EXHALES) Two people are dead.
Something's gone horribly wrong.
Quick, show me before the cavalry arrives.
Hm? (CAMERA CLICKS) Is the power off at the mains? Yeah, yeah.
I switched it off before.
(CAMERA CLICKING) Did you do something to this cord? Just plugged it into the board.
(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYS) It looks like it's been tampered with.
You sure that you checked it was safe to use? Yeah.
Of course I did.
(CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS) These marks Did you notice these when you set the rig up? Not that I remember.
- Why? - Oh! Quick, behind here.
We have to get rid of that hideous death machine.
Until we gather evidence, Mrs Maddox, I'm afraid it will have to stay exactly where it is.
Two young people are dead and all because of superficial tasteless entertainment.
BILLY: This show means everything to young people, Edwina.
They adored Duane.
Have you seen what's happening out there? Rupert new he was good for business.
Constable Connor, could you please direct Mrs Maddox to where she'll be interviewed? I'm perfectly comfortable where I am.
It is very important that interviews be done separately.
I'd like to start with Mr Carson, so if you could please wait with Constable Connor.
Police.
You're all the same.
(ERIC SIGHS) EDWINA: Oh, god.
So, Mrs Maddox, she's clearly not a fan of the show.
Edwina hates TV, music and anyone under 18.
But she owns the station.
Inherited from her husband, Rupert Maddox.
Thankfully, the board of directors think differently.
So, Duane was popular? Of course.
He was our biggest star.
He's made this place a lot of money.
The electrician that turned on this machine, could you tell me his name? (EXHALES) Eric Wild.
Wild by name, wild by nature.
Duane clearly didn't want the thing started, so, I wouldn't have taken the risk and turned it on.
I didn't.
They were arguing and I guess Wild just wanted the last word.
- Mmm.
- Poor Gidget.
Wrong place, wrong time.
He's stitching me up.
- PEREGRINE: Eric! - That is not what happened.
You're lying.
You told me to flick the switch.
You gave me the nod.
Eric Wild, the boyfriend? Ex-boyfriend.
This goose is lying through his teeth.
- Tell him the truth.
- Come down.
If you two could please just wait to the side, I'll be with you once I'm finished with Mr Carson.
(BLUES MUSIC PLAYS) (CLICKING) (CLICKING) It's the cop you were with when I first arrived in town.
You seem to know him pretty well.
Well, in this line of work, cops are an occupational hazard.
Mr Wild.
I'll just wait over here.
Thanks.
God, you might as well stand closer if you're going to eavesdrop.
- Who me? - Yeah.
Save your boyfriend repeating himself.
My understand, Mr Wild, that you built the surf machine.
I did.
It wasn't my idea.
That was Carson's.
That Billy Carson.
But you tested it? Yeah.
When I arrived first thing this morning.
Well, how come you didn't notice that the cord had been tampered with? Because it wasn't when I last saw it.
Someone's tampered with it and it wasn't me.
What were you arguing with Duane about? Ah, dancing.
I was just trying to give him some moves.
- Dancing? - He's very good.
You're going to have to do much better than that.
According to my witness statements, he told you to bugger off.
- He also treated me - How? I sold him something.
What exactly? (EXHALES) My car.
- What? - The details would help, Mr Wild.
He paid me with a check and it bounced.
I went to have it out with him and he just laughed in my face.
Right.
So, that's when I really wanted to punch his lights out.
OK, I think he's said enough.
If you have something to add, Ms Fisher, you can go line up with Constable Connor.
But I think you should talk to Billy Carson about why he lied? He did tell Eric to turn on the machine.
That's suspicious, isn't it? And what about Mrs Maddox, she doesn't like the police.
Why? I'm going to have to question you again once I've examined the crime scene, so What's your address? Uh, 85 Tivelly Road, South Yarra.
That's your address, Ms Fisher.
It's a temporary arrangement.
Don't even think of leaving town.
Excuse me.
Police.
- FREDDY: Freddy Miles.
- (INDISTINCT DISTANT CHATTER) I told the truth.
And gave a damn good motive for murdering somebody.
I wanted to flatten the guy.
I didn't want to kill him.
You sold the station wagon? Duane offered me really good money none of which he actually had.
OK.
You can't stay at my house, Eric.
You're not my boyfriend any more.
We talked about this when you first went to town.
Just for one week.
A week? No! Please, I've been staying in the change room here.
Three days.
Yes, thank you.
(KISSING) Thanks.
Oh, I need to go for a smoke.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER) EDWINA: Where are we going to do? The press are (INAUDIBLE) And you have to deal with that.
We have to make sure Mr Carson? I wanted to ask you some questions about what you just said to the police.
And you are? Well, I'm a private detective.
You need to leave.
Doesn't it worry you, that one of your employees might have been responsible for the deaths of two people? Leave, Ms Whoever You are, before I get security to throw you out.
OK.
I'm going for now.
(UPTEMPO, FRENETIC MUSIC PLAYS) (SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY) How long did you know Gidget for, Mr Liotti? CARLO: Two, maybe three weeks.
But as soon as I see her, I know she's special.
I wanted her.
To manage her? Is that what you're saying? CARLO: I had big plans for Gidget.
I tell her, "You don't need Duane.
You only need me.
Tell him to get lost," I tell her.
Sounds like you didn't like Duane.
(CHUCKLES) What time did you arrive for the performance? (OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYS) You think I killed him? The investigation is in its early days.
People, they're angry about this? Hm? Beautiful young woman, dead? Yes.
And of course, a young man.
You better catch the person who killed Gidget before something bad happens to them.
I hope that's not a threat.
I'll be in touch, Mr Liotti.
Don't jump to any conclusions about Eric.
You mean, apart from the fact that he flicked the switch on the electricity that killed two people? But that's not a motive.
Being owed a lot of money is.
Short fuse doesn't help.
How do you know that Gidget wasn't the target? "In rehearsals, Gidget was meant to be at the back dancing in the waves.
We had a boom mic in that area for sound, but when we went live she couldn't resist jumping into the limelight.
Look where that got her Sound engineer, Freddy Miles.
- So, that crime was premeditated.
- OK.
So, Gidget's not the target if she jumped on to the surfboard at the last minute.
But what about that spiffy-looking foreign bloke you were just speaking with? No, this isn't the way.
Look, Mr Liotti, for the record, is Italian.
Yes, well Mr Liotti seemed to have to have a special soft spot for Gidget.
Maybe he was jealous of Duane.
Love makes people do crazy things.
And you know those hot-headed types.
Like your boyfriend? Ex-boyfriend.
What do you see in that guy, anyway? Is that an official police question? No.
Strike it from the record.
And I will be looking into Mr Wild's past.
Fine.
(FUNKY MUSIC PLAYS) (SIGHS) - Bills.
Bills.
- (HAMMERING) More bills.
(HAMMERING CONTINUES) What are you doing? I'm sunbathing naked in Tahiti.
What do you think? We put aside money for the plumbing.
Which I donated to the Aboriginal Midwives Association.
Ah! Another due electricity notice.
Oh, that money went to, uh, single mothers Yes.
or widows.
We're running out of money, Birdie.
And we need to repair the roof.
How much will that cost? 768 pounds, 4 shillings in threepence.
I'll keep that in mind.
(SPY MUSIC PLAYS) (INDISTINCT MUTTERING) JULIE: Wait, wait, wait, wait.
At least give him his dignity.
MAN: Sorry, ma'am.
Oh and his robe.
It was his favourite.
FREDDY: When did Duane ever fuss over anyone? JULIE: It's more respect, Freddy.
BLACKMAN: OK, folks.
Move along.
Show's over, come on.
So insensitive.
Of course, he is.
He hated Duane.
It means you lot too.
Come on.
Move out.
Thank you.
I'm off the hook? Let's go.
Ah, listen, there's something I need to tell you.
Eric? My station wagon was hot.
- It wasn't my fault - Oh! But I don't think the cops know.
Yet.
Oh, god.
You've been in this job for one week.
How Get in the car.
(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYS) (CAR DOORS SLAM SHUT) (ENGINE STARTS) PEREGRINE: Thanks to your little invention, I managed to take these photographs.
Oh.
I'll develop them later tonight.
What's this? Chewing gum with wires? It's a very important listening device, if you don't mind.
It's a work in progress.
(BELL RINGS) Coming.
- Coming.
Don't touch it.
- Oh.
What's this on your wrist, Peregrine? Oh! It looks like, um Fine crystals.
Like after a day at the beach.
I did put my arm in that pool.
Oh, stop.
It could be poisonous.
I don't think so.
It taste's like salt.
Just a moment.
I'll let Birdie know you're here.
You don't need to announce me.
I can announce myself.
Bossy Birnside! Where are you? What's she doing here? BIRDIE: Uh-uh.
Edwina Maddox.
I thought I recognised those dulcet tones.
For what do we owe this pleasure? I thought you'd already know.
You always have your shnoz in other people's troubles.
Oh, that's rich.
Coming from someone who reported me to the school principal.
Joining the Communist Party of Australia was not appropriate for a student of a Church of England Girls' Grammar School.
Oh, seriously, seriously.
You can not still be terrified about my politics.
They've gotten me this far, I can tell you that.
Oh, really.
Where's that? Defiantly single? No husband.
No children.
No family left, apart from a little brother you've brainwashed into believing you're the bee's knees.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Forgot to have four daughters like you.
Although, they're scattered all over the world, aren't they? And yet, I seem to have quite a few women still to in my life.
Ooh, yes.
In your quaint little club which hasn't been redecorated since 1929.
- This could go on forever.
- Mmm.
Now, what are you doing here? I've heard rumours that you have a new detective, a Phrynese stand-in.
Oh, she's much more than a stand-in.
Edwina Maddox meet Peregrine Fisher.
She's family.
Ah, I thought it must be you.
It wasn't hard.
You're just like your aunt - a bull in a china shop.
You mean she goes where angels fear to tread? It's no surprise, I'm not a fan of the police, Bernadette.
They gave my dear Rupert a terrible time.
That's only because he was so outspoken.
He was so courageous.
I hate to admit it Winnie, but you chose well in the marital stakes, if one must choose.
It's almost a year and I still miss him desperately.
Then why on Earth, aren't you carrying all his causes? You don't lack the resources.
Because I don't want to become a target to the police and the press.
I don't want them trolling through my life, making up lies and trying to discredit me the way they did Rupert.
Well, two young people have lost their lives in your television station, so you are a target, whether you like it or not.
Which is why I need to solve this tragedy as quickly as possible.
If you can promise me that you can beat the police to solving this crime, I'm happy to pay your price.
Samuel, do you want to tell Edwina exactly what that price is? (INHALES DEEPLY) 768 pounds, 4 shillings and threepence.
That's highway robbery.
Please keep me informed.
Of course.
To be honest, I never warmed to Duane Gordon and I find this whole celebrity palaver completely uncivilised.
Well, it's your company.
Why didn't you just end his contract? According to Billy Carson, he made us a fortune.
God knows how the station will manage now.
So, you have no idea how your company stands? No.
Rupert never involved me in the business side of things.
Perhaps he thought I was too stupid.
Oh, I doubt that, Winnie.
Rupert was a smart man.
He knew what he was marrying.
Maybe he just needed to be married.
Hmm.
Bye.
Au revoir.
(DOOR CLOSES) She's hiding something.
I think Billy Carson might be hiding something too.
What were you doing at the television station, anyway? I was just helping an old friend.
Who? (SIGHS) My ex-boyfriend, Eric, is under suspicion.
For the murder? And what's your opinion? Well, he didn't do it.
Good.
So, it's win-win.
You get to help your old flame and whining Winnie pays for our new roof.
I'm sure I can do that, Mr Liotti.
I appreciate very much.
Arrivederci.
Um, pleasure.
(PHONE RINGING) Carlo Liotti's made a complaint about you harassing him at the TV station.
I've done nothing of the sort, sir.
There will be no questioning, no interrupting, not even any smiling in his direction.
Do you understand what I'm saying, son? Yeah, I do, but No buts.
Out.
(DISTANT PHONE RINGING) Sir.
(PHONE RINGING) I found this at the crime scene.
I thought it might be Italian.
Yes, you're right.
"You've betrayed me and you'll be sorry".
That sounds like a threat, doesn't it? Why is it written in Italian? Well, at a wild guess, I'd say it's got something to do with that Italian bloke I saw lurking around.
- He says that he's a talent manager.
- Mm.
But maybe he was more than that to Gidget and that she betrayed him with Duane and then jealousy drove him to kill them both.
Unfortunately, Italians are quite passionate to a vendetta.
Mm.
Oh, Peregrine, ah, for the pool water.
If it is salt water, we need to know.
I'm on it.
Another flower delivery, from, uh, your secret admirer.
- (SIGHS) Still they come.
- Yeah.
Well, you could turn it into a science experiment.
The, uh, floral culture of dried flowers.
(SIGHS) I'd prefer not to be receiving them, but I just can't bring myself to throw out nature's gifts.
I have a good, uh, Chinese potpourri recipe you could use.
From Daphne? Yeah, she wouldn't mind.
She refused to waste anything of beauty.
Your wife sounded lovely.
She was.
Samuel? Thank you for not being nosey about my gifts.
Of course.
I should BLACKMAN: Yeah, Mrs Maddox has already told me that you're, uh, the private investigator.
So, you're like a cop? Unofficial cop with a greater range of skills - Mm.
- .
.
bit like yourself.
Well, you stop bad things from happening, and I find out who did the bad things.
- (CHUCKLES) - Maybe we could be a team? Mm? (BOTH CHUCKLING) Well, there have been a few strange going-ons of late.
Such as? Well, someone broke into the studio a couple of weeks ago and left a terrible mess.
- Did they steal anything? - No.
Nothing.
That's the weird thing.
But they did burn cigarette holes into some of Duane's outfits and Duane pointed a finger at Freddy Miles.
- The sound recordist? - Yeah.
You think that he did it? No.
He just wasn't one of Duane's favourites.
Well then, neither was I.
- Hmm.
Interesting.
- Mm.
Thank you.
Oh, no problem, Sherlock.
(BOTH LAUGHING) Oh, ah Miss Thomas, the costume and makeup girl, she was the one who told me all about Duane's clothes.
(CHUCKLES) Mm.
They were Duane's absolute favourite costumes.
Everyone knew that.
It's so malicious, burning cigarette holes in his clothes.
It's awful.
Just awful.
I'm so sorry, I've upset you.
I'm I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this.
I know.
We're all jangled.
They were the heart of this place.
Well, it's understandable, you must have worked so closely with both Duane and Gidget.
(EXHALES) Duane liked my work so much, he was going to make me his exclusive hair and makeup artist, wherever he went.
You know, his dream was to go to the UK.
So, Duane would have left 'The Beat Show'? Duane was ambitious.
And this little show wasn't big enough for him.
Excuse me, I've got to get back to work before I get the sack.
BILLY: How come this light's still here? From Billy Carson? Yes, he's always pushing people.
Did Billy push anybody in particular? Did he push Duane? BILLY: Are you kidding me? JULIE: He pushed everyone but he's already giving Freddy Miles, our sound recordist, a hard time.
And was there a reason for that? Freddy's not always on the ball.
It's true.
Sometimes I think Mr Carson just enjoys watching people suffer.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER) (OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYS) If you want to be happy, come along with me Oh, yeah, uh-huh I want to hold you close, beneath the bamboo tree Oh, yeah Uh-huh.
I'm dying for one of those.
Oh, yeah.
Of course.
Ah, thank you.
(SINGING CONTINUES) Mm.
Oh.
(LIGHTER CLICKS) Haven't seen you around the studio before.
Oh, I'm not very memorable.
Mm.
Unlike Duane Gordon.
Look at those fans.
He sure is going to be missed.
(CHUCKLES) Not by everyone.
Oh, that's right.
Of course.
(CHUCKLES) Famous people always have public lives and private lives, don't they? Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
You can say that again.
He was a spoiled brat.
Well, I'm not surprised.
Apparently, Billy Carson was paying him an absolute fortune.
And let him have what ever he wanted.
Didn't mean Duane was going to stick around though, did it? I heard about him going to the UK.
Worst kept secret.
That will teach him for talking to Gidget.
Hm? Hm? (STAMMERING) D D Duane wanted to take Gidget with him but she blabbed to Billy and Billy hit the roof.
- Really? - Mm-hm.
Do you remember exactly what he said? Anyway, I've got set up some levels.
Nice talking to ya.
- You too.
- Bye.
('MAMMA'S GONE TO SLEEP AGAIN BY THE CHANTRELLES PLAYS) Hey, hey, hey, get up in the morning At the crack of dawn Get Mamma outta bed Pappa's got a lookin' Why ain't Mamma cooking? Mamma's going to stay Sorry, I kept you waiting.
(SIGHS) Come inside.
Um, not if one of my murder suspects is in there.
What did you call me here for? I've got a job to get back to.
Well, so do I.
Edwina Maddox just hired me as her private investigator.
You don't think that's a conflict of interest, because of you know who? No, I don't.
There's plenty of people who could have murdered Duane.
Billy Carson said the security guard, Blackman, loathed him.
And Blackman himself admitted to me that he wasn't one of Duane's favourite people.
Neither was Freddy Miles.
And then there's the Italian stallion.
- Carlo Liotti? - Him.
Maybe Gidget and Duane had a fling and Carlo got rid of him.
And then there's Billy Carson himself.
But Duane was making him a fortune.
Yes, but Billy found out that Duane was going to do him a dirty and move to the UK.
And Julie Thomas also told me that Billy Carson liked to see people suffer.
Maybe it was a sadistic thing.
(PANTING) Finished? Don't you think any of that's important? Don't you think any of that counts? I'm looking into Billy Carson.
I get the impression that his emotions often get the better of him.
Just like somebody else that I know.
Well, I'm glad that you're looking into Billy Carson.
I will as well.
Good.
Good.
PI Fisher.
(ROCK MUSIC PLAYS) This looks like an approximation of sea water.
Approximately 35 grams of salt to a thousand grams total mass.
Which means? It means this is water about (INHALES) A million times more conductive than tap water.
PEREGRINE: But the voltage would have been quite low.
Well, it's actually got more to do with amperage and how heat relates to total surface area.
It's very, um Well, let's not get into all that, shall we? The point is, the combination of electricity, salt and the volume of water make it lethal.
Salt? Everybody uses salt.
How am I going to track that back to the murderer? Hm.
Ah! Ah, that's why I came up.
There were photos you took.
I've developed them.
They might help.
This electrical cord has definitely been cut by something sharp.
It hasn't just perished.
Mm.
And what of these marks? Oh, I noticed these weird, green smudges when I was by the pool.
But they might not be anything.
The studio floor's covered in scuff marks, see? VIOLETTA: It's a song.
It's a song! The note from the crime scene.
(SINGING IN ITALIAN) Tanto tempo Ma Mi hai tradito e te ne pentirai Ai, ai, ai, ai Mi hai tradito e te ne pentirai You sing so well.
(CHUCKLES) Thank you.
The note.
It's a song, "Mi hai tradito e te ne Pentirai", "You betrayed me and you'll be sorry".
The most famous Italian pop song in the last five years.
In Italy.
It could still be meant as a sort of, um, veiled threat.
Well, that discounts Eric.
He wouldn't know an Italian pop song if it slapped him in the face.
(LAUGHTER) So, who is your front runner? Ah, Gidget's Italian admirer if that note's anything to go by.
Mm.
But, Duane wasn't universally loved by everybody at the studio.
Julie Thomas, makeup artist, was pretty keen to ride on his coattails.
But Freddy Miles the sound recordist and, uh, Alex Blackman, security, both thought that Duane was the devil in disguise.
And is there any Italian links there? (SIGHS) I don't know yet.
But what do you know about Billy Carson? Well, Julie Thomas said that Billy Carson liked to watch people suffer.
Also, apparently he hit the roof when he found that Duane was going to the UK.
And who are you inclined to believe? Well, Eric.
But he has the most obvious motive of them all.
Duane had one over Eric because Eric sold him a stolen car.
Well, you like a bad boy, Peregrine? Don't we all.
(SCOFFS) Well, I have moved on.
But anyway, it doesn't look good for Eric.
He got very angry because Duane's check bounced and then Duane wouldn't give him back the car.
But the question is, why was Duane Gordon bouncing checks if his career was flourishing like you said it was? Who exactly was this young man? Mmm.
(STEALTHY MUSIC PLAYS) (SIGHS) Damn it.
- Come on.
- (APPROACHING FOOTSTEPS) Pays to be nice to the caretaker.
Mm.
Hm.
Thank you.
Cheese and rice.
You don't think that Duane was just an untidy bachelor, do you? STEED: Ha, I would say not.
Maybe our golden boy wasn't naturally golden.
Hydrogen peroxide.
Well, blondes have more fun.
Oh, I wouldn't say that.
EDWINA: Birdie! Birdie! What progress is there with the investigation? Well, these things take time.
Which I haven't got.
Place is swarming with police.
There has been a murder.
Which I am paying you to solve.
We're losing sponsors and Billy Carson, my manager, is about to go under.
Why do you say that? Well, his nerves are shot and he's gone into a complete tailspin.
So, I need you tell me if there's anything in these that might explain why.
What are these? Our accounts.
Billy refused to hand them over, so I I stole them.
(CLEARS THROAT) Well, it's not theft if it's your own company, but I do applaud your attitude.
Now, I don't know what Billy's been up to and what it's got to do with these murders.
But I'll be damned if I'm going to stand by and watch Rupert's legacy go up in flames.
So, you're going to run towards the fire? With your help.
About bloody time, Winnie.
(BLUES MUSIC PLAYS) (SCREAMING) (YELLING) (UP-TEMPO FRENETIC MUSIC PLAYS) STEED: Peregrine! Oh, whoa! (GRUNTING) (GROANING) (YELLING) (GROANING) I don't think you're ready to join my team, Blackman.
(PHONE RINGING) (PHONE RINGING) Uh, um.
You can't come in here.
Why not? I'm a witness.
What if Sparrow see's you? Well, he's not here right now, is he? You made a nice mess at Duane's.
I didn't do it.
It was like that when I got there and the backdoor was open.
(SCOFFS) I swear on my mother's grave.
Duane Gordon's headshots.
They'd be worth selling, I'd say.
Is that what you were doing and Duane found out? (DISTANT PHONE RINGING) Care to explain, Mr Blackman? Oh, well I don't know about you private investigators, but security guards, we don't get paid that much.
I need to supplement for my family.
So, yeah, OK.
I I nick a couple occasionally and then Duane died and I knew he had a stash of them.
Stealing from dead people? That's pretty low.
Yeah, but I'm not low enough to kill anyone.
I'm going to let you go.
Uh! Still might press theft charges once we're done here.
Get out of here.
(BLACKMAN SIGHS) That's it? You're just letting him go? You think he's our killer? You think you that he'd murder Duane just so he could flog a bunch of photographs? Duane threatened to have him sacked.
Well, he probably threatened your boyfriend with the same fate because of their business transactions.
Look, I don't want to talk about Eric.
Good, 'cause neither do I.
(PHONE RINGING) There was not evidence of a forced entry at the front or back.
Someone let themselves in with a key.
And smashing Duane's photographs, cigarette burns to Duane's clothes, it feels like a personal grudge to me.
Duane knew whoever made that mess.
And I would hazard a guess that was the same person that murdered him.
So, Duane knew his killer very well.
- Duck! - (GASPS) (COMICAL MUSIC PLAYS) Sir.
(STEED LAUGHS) ('BLUE AS TWILIGHT' BY ART PEPPER QUARTET PLAYS) ('BLUES AT TWILIGHT' BY ART PEPPER QUARTET CONTINUES) (INDISTINCT BACKGROUND CHATTER) What do you think Duane was doing hanging out here? Do you need to ask? Look at this place.
Good music.
Beautiful people.
Oh, those Italians, they really know how to relax.
- They certainly do.
- Mm.
Oh, we should have brought Violetta with us.
I get the impression that sometimes our lovely Violetta prefers to forget her continental heritage.
Mm.
Now, if I knew the signal, I'd be able to get us some illegal after-hours liquor.
- Birdie.
- Oh.
Some rules are ridiculous.
And don't be fooled by those cute little lemonade glasses and straws.
I'm going to get us a drink.
(LAUGHS) (INDISTINCT BACKGROUND CHATTER CONTINUES) Ah, buonasera, boys.
(CLICKS TONGUE) Oh, hello.
(BAND CONTINUES PLAYING 'BLUES AT TWILIGHT') (INDISTINCT BACKGROUND CHATTER CONTINUES) (INDISTINCT CHATTER) FREDDY: Ooh! Here we go.
(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYS) (OMINOUS MUSIC INTENSIFIES) (GASPS) I know you from the TV studio.
What is your name? That depends who's asking.
You're in my establishment.
As the host, ask the question.
As my guest, you answer.
It is good manners, yes? My name's Peregrine Fisher.
And what do you do at the studio, Peregrine Fisher? Ah, a bit of everything while I learn the ropes.
Good answer.
Come.
(JAZZ MUSIC CONTINUES) Well, when your baby says that she's grown tired of you And you start to leave CARLO: (SINGING) But just before you do She begins to toke all up and starts to ball Oh, that's my friend.
She's having a wonderful time.
Well that's the best time of The very best c.
white.
bgblack - Birdie.
Help.
Then she'll ask forgiveness for the things I'm not a stupid man.
I've seen you with that ciuco who built the surf machine.
Um When you see him, you tell him to come and speak to me.
We need to have a little talk.
(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYS) Mm.
We need to leave right now.
Oh, things are just starting to get a little bit interesting.
For you, maybe.
Come on, quickly.
BIRDIE: Ciao.
That sounds like a threat to me.
Well, make no mistake, it was a threat.
Well, at the very least, I hope his crooning wasn't too awful.
SAMUEL: As two become one.
Well, let's hope that the genus is similar, so they don't perish.
You don't believe in opposites attract? (DISTANT HORN BLARING) It hasn't worked for me in the past.
We've both been unlucky in love.
BIRDIE: Is Peregrine in yet? SAMUEL: Um, must be having a late start.
Mm.
Not suprising after her unfortunate run in with that man last night.
Carlo Liotti and he's the manager of that girl that got electrocuted.
- Peregrine met Carlo Liotti? - Mm.
At the Gattino Nero, last night.
Then he's probably doing much more that being a showgirl's manager? He's one of those men.
One of what men? Ndrangheta.
The Mafia.
The Honoured Society.
Call it what you will.
(SIGHS) I had my suspicions.
I can't say I've heard of any of them.
From Calabria in Italy.
They make their money from fear and extortion and they will stop at nothing if they are crossed.
Charming.
And where does this Carlo fellow fit in? The Liotti clan has been a powerful family for many years.
Very powerful.
Excuse me, I've forgotten something inside.
Violetta seems to know a lot about that gentleman.
She does indeed.
(CUTLERY CLINKING) (MUSIC PLAYING ON RADIO) (POURING) (CLATTERING) Good morning.
Morning.
Aww, didn't have enough time with this one.
Oh, well, given that it was stolen that might not be such a bad thing.
Hey, I told you it wasn't my fault.
I didn't know it was stolen till after I bought it.
I paid really good money for it.
Eric, your missing car might be the least of your problems right now.
(SIGHS) I I need to warn you about something.
Last night, I went to this club and there was the (DOORBELL) Stay away from the windows.
(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC PLAYS) PEREGRINE: It's you.
STEED: There's been a new lead in the investigation.
We got a forensic report back on the pool water.
G'day.
Mr Wild, what could you tell me about this? It's a bag of salt.
It's found in your tool box at the studio.
(APPROACHING FOOTSTEPS) (ZIPPING) - Who hates you, Mr Wild? - Apart from you? Oh, hopefully not enough to set you up for murder.
My guess is that the murderer chose you as their fall guy from day one.
Duane had more reason to kill me than vice-versa.
Get rid of me and he gets rid of his debt.
Yeah, I agree.
And it takes a desperate man to run up debt with a studio electrician.
I'm also a very good mechanic who can dance.
And sell stolen goods? - He didn't know it was stolen.
- Yeah.
So, don't point the finger.
He's just doing his job.
- Whose side are you on? - No-one's.
Anyway (SIGHS) Edwina Maddox said Duane was being paid a helluva lot more than he was worth.
So, why would someone making that much money have debts he can't afford? - Ah, fast cars.
- Fast women.
(SIGHS) Drinking.
Gambling.
Freddy Miles has a connection to that gambling den.
What gambling den? It's a long story.
If Duane had debts, he wouldn't tell me.
He didn't like looking like a loser.
It was all about keeping up appearances.
So, Mr Gordon didn't owe you any money? Mm? Mm-mm.
That's a joke.
He knew I never won anything.
Bloody owed me more than money, though.
Need you to elaborate.
I could always do you for obstruction, Mr Miles.
That's your choice.
He introduced me to that gambling place.
And Italian cigarettes? Mm-hm.
Yeah.
Them too.
The card games were all a bit of fun at first, but then I couldn't stop.
That sounds like a recipe for disaster.
So, you ran up debts.
Am I on the right track? How did you pay them? With no thanks to Duane.
Said he didn't loan money to gamblers, but he made me one.
He ruined my life.
JULIE: Excuse me.
Freddy? They need you out there.
Yeah, we done here? For the moment.
There was a lot of anger there.
- I still think he's hiding something.
- Mm.
Until we solve the case, I want to take that as a given of everyone.
Even me? You especially.
Where you going? PEREGRINE: Somewhere.
(LOUD ROLLING) (STEALTHY MUSIC PLAYS) (SPY MUSIC PLAYS) (SLIDING DOOR OPENING) (PEREGRINE GASPS??? (DOOR SLIDING) I told you, I haven't got it.
LORENZO: You know the arrangement.
(GRUNTING) PEREGRINE: Hey! Hey you get off! (SHRIEKS) (GRUNTING AND SHRIEKING) Next time, you won't have a woman to save you.
Don't forget what I said.
(PEREGRINE PANTING) What was that all about? - It's nothing.
- Do you need a doctor? (PANTING) I'm fine.
I'm fine.
Leave me alone.
(PANTING) SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC PLAYS (HEAVY BREATHING) (GASPS) (BLUES MUSIC PLAYS) Oh, yes.
Oh, yes, yes.
I've got a lot to learn from you.
Thank you, Dawn.
What did you find out about that terrible show? Well, that terrible show wasn't making you much money.
But Billy claimed it was.
Well, the sponsors are paying good money but the outgoings are huge.
500 pounds a month to this entity called Spin City Records.
Do you know anything about them? Never heard of them.
Well, let's got for a little spin ourselves then, shall we? (ROCK MUSIC PLAYS) I thought I recognised this address.
What, you know this place? That club, Gattino Nero, it's currently run by Carlo Liotti.
The talent scout? Or what ever he is.
So, why would the studio be paying money to Carlo Liotti and Spin City Records? I've no idea.
Uh, I can't believe how much rubbish Duane left in Eric's car.
Mm.
Duane's check book.
Oh, I saw that.
Notice how Duane paid 500 pounds every month to something called, 'Spin City'.
- Mm.
- Come again? Uh, Spin City.
It sounds like a recording studio, maybe.
- Maybe Duane was cutting a record.
- I've just been there with Edwina.
It's connected to Gattino Nero, Liotti's place.
And Rupert, Edwina's husband, was also paying money to Spin City.
Well, I doubt he was cutting a record.
VIOLETTA: Sounds like extortion to me.
That is how The Honoured Society makes their money.
So, Duane and Rupert had something to hide? Now, the question is what? Well, something against the law, I suspect.
(CHUCKLES) Duane's rap sheet is getting more and more colourful Illegal activities, bouncing checks, unpaid bills, gambling debts I doubt that Rupert had anything to do with something like that.
Well, one way or another, all roads lead back to Carlo Liotti and Spin City.
He's our common denominator.
(CAR HORN BLARING) Yeah, I think I might be able to help you with that.
Um It is 85 Tivelly Road, South Yarra, that might be your best bet.
Yeah.
Uh, not a problem Mr Liotti.
Arrivederci.
Any idea why Sparrow would be giving Peregrine's address to Mr Liotti? (PHONE RINGING) Adventuress' Club.
Detective Steed.
No, I haven't been home since this morning.
Why, I left Eric there.
(TENSE MUSIC PLAYS) (GASPS) I need you to cover for me.
What ('CLAUDETTE JONES' BY PETER & THE SILHOUETTES PLAYS) (GUNSHOT) Whoa! Hey! Stronzo! (GRUNTS) (GUN CLICKS) (GUN CLICKING) (GRUNTING) (CAR TYRES SCREECHING) Eric! ('CLAUDETTE JONES' BY PETER & THE SILHOUETTES CONTINUES) Quick, get in.
- Go, go, go! - (TYRES SCREECH) (CAR STALLS) Oh! (HEAVY BREATHING) (GUN COCKS) (CAR WHINING) Come on! Come on! What's happening? (CAR WHINING) Oh! Get down! (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC PLAYS) (HEAVY BREATHING) (APPROACHING FOOTSTEPS) (GASPING) Peregrine.
I think I ran out of petrol.
(SIGHS) Must have seen you arrive and took off.
Yeah.
Friend of Carlo's, perhaps.
Same friend who attacked Billy Carson at the TV station? Yes.
You heard about that? - Carson refuses to lay charges.
- Oh.
Isn't this the wagon you sold to Duane? Yeah, well he never paid me, so legally it's mine.
(CLEARS THROAT) Except I found out it was nicked.
And this is your official reporting of a stolen vehicle? PEREGRINE: Yes.
Thank you, Mr Wild, for your honesty.
I'll send someone to pick it up.
(ERIC SIGHS) (MENACING MUSIC PLAYS) Sir.
Steed.
Just a minute of your time.
Counting down.
A friend of Peregrine Fisher's just been shot at.
As a result, she and her friend could have been killed.
What's that got to do with me? I suspect that Mr Liotti had something to do with that.
I told you to stay away from him.
And I have, sir.
But I'm talking about attempted murder, something needs to be done about him.
Is that it? Sir? You're way out of your depths, Steed.
Off you go.
Sir, my duty as a policeman is to protect people.
Some strange day comes when that's no longer my highest priority, I'd be handing in my badge.
Good to know.
Sir.
ERIC: Still don't know we had to cough up about that car.
PEREGRINE: Sshh! We very rarely allow men extended access, Mr Wild, but since you've been shot at, we've made an exception.
As long as we're not harbouring the murder suspect.
Not the prime murder suspect.
Violetta, I thought maybe you could help me figure this out What does it say? The attacker dropped it.
This watch has 'Crotone' engraved on it.
Crotone is a port city in Calabria, where the Liotti clan emigrated from.
Why would Carlo Liotti want to kill this lovely young man? Because he thinks that Eric murdered Gidget Mitchell.
Oh, great.
So, I'm finally in the clear with your cop mate and some criminal wants to blow my head off? No, it's OK.
You'll be safe here.
Is there anything else that you can tell us about the Liotti clan that might be helpful, Violetta? I suppose I should tell you.
Carlo and I we were engaged.
I knew him when he was a young man, when he swore he would never get mixed up in the family business which was, of course, crime.
Carlo's family began feuding with another family and Carlo was forced to take sides.
I couldn't have my parents mixed up in that dangerous life, so I ended the engagement.
And I suppose Carlo wasn't too pleased about that? I had to cut myself off, start afresh and I thought he would forget about me.
Maybe somehow, this is all because of me.
Well, if I hadn't have come here Violetta, it's not your fault that Carlo Liotti is involved with that television station and I am very glad that you made your way to us.
So am I.
Now, let's get back to it.
(UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYS) VIOLETTA: Here's something.
Duane sang a piano accordion duet with his twin from the age of five.
Twin? - What do you know about a twin? - Nothing.
That's the first I've heard of it.
Maybe a visit to Deaths, Births and Marriages, perhaps.
Absolutely.
What if someone of the show knows more about his family? He's pretty friendly with that makeup woman.
Oh, I suspect that she's told me everything she's going to tell a detective.
Well, maybe we need someone who's not a detective to talk to her.
Mm.
According to 'The Melbourne Gazette', 'The Beat Show' is holding open auditions tonight to find new talent.
Maybe that could be a way in? I could go in.
Well, I can sing.
You've heard me.
Admittedly, not rock and roll, but I could expand my repertoire.
What if Carlo Liotti's there? He's a very dangerous man, Violetta, you said so, yourself.
It's time I show him, I'm not running anymore.
Oh, be very careful then.
I'll be her chaperone.
And I am finally happy with this new listening device that I've been working on.
Oh, great, Samuel! Ah! I'm sorry, Miss.
I can't tell you who Duane Gordon's twin is.
Well, why not? According to our records, Duane Gordon doesn't exist.
(LADIES SINGING IN HARMONY) Do, do, do, do Do, do, do, do (CONTINUES SINGING) - They're good, aren't they? - They're OK.
Maybe Duane Gordon was a stage name.
And somebody around here must have some clue about who he really was.
I'll see what I can find out.
- Good luck.
- Yeah.
Hello.
Mr Miles - Bit busy.
- Just a quick question.
Yeah.
No need to hurry.
At Gattino Nero, did you ever hear about anything connected to extortion? (APPLAUSE) Uh, no, don't know anything.
(APPLAUSE) Can I get The Badges? We have The Badges.
If you know something and you're not telling me or the police, you know you could be charged with withholding evidence? Mm.
Yep.
Yeah, I know something bad went down at that place.
Did it have something to do with Duane? - I reckon so.
- And what makes you say that? They go crazy if anyone mentions it.
What exactly was 'it'? I don't know.
But I heard it ruined his birthday and I know the cops were involved.
STAGE MANAGER: And roll play black.
You didn't hear that from me.
(PLAYING 'NO GO NO DOUGH' BY LEONARD WEISMAN) This is the story of my first date My dad said he'd drive me, so I wouldn't be late I was so nervous that I didn't know Oh my gosh, I forgot my dough Need some dough, so I can go Freddy, stop! What? Need some dough for the drive-in show I need some dough, so I can go (MUSIC PLAYS IN DISTANCE) - It's nothing.
- I'm worried about that.
- Shut the door.
- You can't be drinking on the job.
(BADGES CONTINUE PERFORMING 'NO GO NO DOUGH' IN DISTANCE) JULIE: What is your problem? What is going on? It's the tape.
What tape? The sound recording before the show.
I taped everything that was going on.
Everything? Why? Because that's what I always do to check my levels and make sure everything's running OK.
For God's sakes, throw it away.
They'll find out.
They've got eyes and ears everywhere.
Freddy, you didn't hurt Duane or Gidget, did you? Well No.
No, of course not.
But there's some things I said on the tape which will make it sound like I did.
I was always having a go at Duane.
Get rid of it.
Help me.
They won't look at you.
- JULIE: Where is it? - FREDDY: In my pocket.
- Give it here.
- Go.
Ah Very structurally sound.
I'm going to, um take that one with me.
(UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYS) Freddy didn't say.
He just said the police were involved.
That could be some kind of a raid.
Wouldn't have been the first one on Gattino Nero.
Freddy and the makeup girl were talking about a sound recording from the night of the murder.
Do you know where that is? I have to go.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Repeat, auditionees to Studio Two.
(GUITAR STRUMMING) (APPLAUSE) FREDDY: Thank you.
Thank you.
Next up Violetta Fellini.
(CLEARS THROAT) What are you singing? 'Tintarella di Luna'.
In English? In English it's called 'The Tanning of the Moon'.
Christ, spare me.
I hope it's good for your sake.
Now remember, you're helping with our decision put them on the show or not.
So, clap your heart out if you like, Violetta Fellini singing 'Moon Tan'.
(APPLAUSE) In English, no foreign languages on this show.
- The whole song? - Yep.
And roll playback.
(PIANO PLAYING 'TINTARELLA DI LUNA' BY MINA) (STAMMERS) All the patches have been tanned Redskins are a little bit purple The girls are those who take the sun But there is this one girl who takes the moon Tanning of the moon, tan Moon, moon, tan Milk coloured moon tan The the rooftops On the roof tops like a pussy cat And the moon is full.
- Um - (MUSIC STOPS ABRUPTLY) Thanks, Miss Fellini.
(WOMAN CLEARING HER THROAT) Now to the verdict of the audience.
What do you think of that? (CHUCKLING) Come on.
(SINISTER MUSIC PLAYS) CARLO: When you see Bill, you tell him he needs to come and see me.
OK? Thanks.
- Oh, it's you.
How'd you go? - (PANTING) Are you alright? You look rattled.
And you look like a thief.
(RELIEVED SIGHING) Bingo.
(SIGHS) Come on.
BILLY: Not so fast, ladies.
Miss Fellini, must have friends in high places.
You made it through the audition process, so you're on the show 2pm tomorrow.
Julie will look after your hair and makeup.
Don't be late.
(CHUCKLES) Give the foreign chick a make over.
Maybe dye her hair blonde.
Can't have the mum and dads at home thinking we've roped in a bunch of migrants.
Yes, Mr Carson.
Friends in high places? Carlo.
Oh.
Come on.
(BIRDS CHIRPING) You look like you could use a coffee.
I've got some new information.
A good morning to you too.
I spent the whole night trawling through police files just trying to find something relating to Duane and Gattino Nero and couldn't find a thing.
Oh, Sparrow strikes again.
- So, I went to the library - ERIC: The library? You're a real action man.
to look up some old newspapers.
I found a small article in 'The Fitzroy Times' about some goings on at an Italian club.
Gattino Nero.
People arrested but there's no names, there's no pictures.
But it's rumoured to involve high-profile television identities.
Was there a date on the article? Freddy mentioned that something happened on Duane's birthday.
Date of the article was January 25th last year.
But I'm going to his flat for another search.
Well, I'm coming with you.
(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYS) (BLUES PLAYING) Sorry.
Well, it certainly seems personal.
Mmm.
But why? And what were they looking for? Per.
- What? - (GASPS) An Italian passport and travellers checks.
Carlo's? No.
It's in the name of Gino Giordano.
This passport's a few years old, but that face is very familiar.
Oh, it's him! Billy Carson didn't like ethnic people in his show.
- The peroxide.
- Yes.
And the travellers checks.
Julie said that Duane was going to the UK.
(EXHALES) There's no record of Duane ever existing because Duane Gordon was actually Gino Giordano.
(LIVELY, UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYS) Where are you from? My parents are from Catanzaro in Calabria.
Well, let's make the most of these exotic looks.
No, Mr Carson wants me to look less exotic.
He's just old fashioned.
Maybe, but he is very nice.
He could have banned me, I butchered the song I was singing.
That's because you sang it in English.
It's an Italian song, isn't it? Maybe try it the way it's meant to be.
You really think that's a good idea? It's a mistake to turn your back on your culture.
Don't worry.
An Italian song with an Italian look, you'll knock everyone's socks off.
Can I ask you a question about Duane? You're not another fan? No.
You ask a lot of questions.
Right now, I don't want to think about Duane.
Sit back and relax.
I'm going to make you look like Sophia Loren.
(ENGINE REVVING) SAMUEL: Birdie.
Birdie! Birdie.
Your uh Your visitor.
Haven't you got someone to do that messy work for you? I'm the only person who has ever worked on this magnificent piece of machinery.
And it gives me great pleasure knowing that.
So, what's this about some raid on Gattino Nero? Lemonade? So, we've been piecing it all together the money from the accounts and, uh, Billy, Duane and Rupert all paying money to Spin City.
So, what are you trying to say? Well, when Gattino Nero was raided three men were arrested, not just Duane and um We think that they were all part of the same crowd.
What kind of crowd? I suspect that um Rupert was having a special relationship with Billy Carson.
You can't believe rumours.
Did you know, Winnie? (SENTIMENTAL MUSIC PLAYS) When the police raided that awful club, they were delighted that Rupert was found with Billy.
He tried to tell that me, that the, um that he had been accused of gambling.
Mm.
Well, wasn't gambling.
Was it? And Carlo Liotti protected them for a price.
500 pounds a month was extortion money to hide their secret.
Well 40 years of marriage.
We raised our daughters built a beautiful home.
We had lovely holidays.
All those photographs of us smiling was all built on a lie.
Oh, Winnie.
It's not something that he could change.
And it doesn't mean that he didn't love you.
Thank you.
Right.
(CHUCKLES) (CHUCKLES) What the hell? What happened to the blonde idea? I tried, it didn't work with her hair.
She looks like Sophie, bloody, Loren.
Hey, this will be fun.
You better be good.
MALE VOICE: (IN ITALIAN) Tu non vieni in Inghilterra con me.
FEMALE VOICE: (IN ITALIAN) Ma io sono il tuo specchio, non lei.
(WINNIE ATTEMPTING TO TRANSLATE) Per favore.
She's on, she's on.
(CHEERING) (PIANO PLAYING 'TINTARELLA DI LUNA' BY MINA) (SINGING IN ITALIAN) Abbronzate tutte (CLEARS THROAT) Oh, she's nervous.
(MUTTERING) JULIE: (WHISPERING) You got this.
(MUTTERING FROM AUDIENCE CONTINUES) WOMAN: Oh my gosh.
She sure is.
(APPLAUSE) Bellissima! Bellissima! Brava.
Brava! (APPLAUSE) (WHISTLING) Um, I'm not sure, I'll check.
Is there are Peregrine Fisher here? Yes, that's me.
Oh.
Hello? - BIRDIE: Peregrine.
- Birdie.
BIRDIE: News on a couple of fronts.
Rupert and Billy were in a relationship.
Rupert and Billy? Yes, yes, yes.
It's confirmed by Edwina.
Now, regarding Freddy's tape, he did argue with Duane but more intriguing is something he seemed to have accidentally recorded.
MALE VOICE: (IN ITALIAN) Tu non vieni in Inghilterra con me.
FEMALE VOICE: (IN ITALIAN) Ma io sono il tuo specchio, non lei.
Now, according to Edwina and her vast Italian skills Si.
The male voice says, "You're not coming to England with me".
And then the female voice replies, "But I am your mirror, not her".
That voice, it sounds like 'Thomas' means twin in ancient Greek.
Gino was a twin, we thought it was male, but we were wrong.
The photos of the crime scene, the marks on the floor near Eric's work equipment.
How did I miss this? (GASPS) Peregrine? (RAPID FOOTSTEPS) Peregrine? Peregrine?! (SINGING IN ITALIAN) Tintarella di luna.
(LAUGHING AND SINGING) That was a first for 'The Beat Show'.
I couldn't have done it without you or this dress.
Ooh.
Let me snip you out of it.
Where are my scissors? - Here.
- Oh.
(FOREBODING MUSIC PLAYS) This is from the electrical cord.
I always told Duane that Italian songs could work.
(PANTING) (FRENETIC MUSIC PLAYS) (LAUGHING) Hey, Stanley.
I heard you met your girlfriend in a revolving door? Yes, and I've been going round with her ever since.
(LAUGHTER) There she is now.
(PANTING) VIOLETTA: (SHRIEK) Help! - Help me! - Violetta.
Help! Help me! Help! Stop! No! Please! Help! Help me! Help! I'm truly so sorry, but I have to do this now that you know.
No, no.
You have a choice.
You do have a choice.
PEREGRINE: Julie! Let her go! I know that Gino was your twin brother.
I know why you did it.
You don't.
You don't know.
I did so much for him and he just threw me to the side.
He didn't even want to look like me anymore.
Gino had to change the way he looked, to hide his culture, to be accepted.
You know that Billy Carson wouldn't have let him on the show otherwise.
You wanted him to stay Italian, didn't you? You wanted him to be true to himself.
- Never change, you said that.
- Shut up! Shut Please, don't hurt my friend.
Hurting her won't change anything.
You've already lost enough.
Please, Julie.
Please.
- Are you OK? - Yes.
I never wanted to lose him.
No, of course you didn't.
You were the brother-sister act since you were kids.
You were always hoping that Gino would ask you to perform with him, instead of Gidget.
But he never asked you, did he? He's going to make me his exclusive hair and makeup artist, wherever he went.
His dream was to go to the UK.
It was just the two of us.
It was always me and Gino.
But then he said he was leaving you.
- That's enough.
- Hey! He was going to England alone without you and that's when you snapped.
Your shoes left green marks around the pool from the broken eyeshadow you must have stepped in.
The same marks you left when you planted the salt that set up Eric.
You wrote the note, didn't you? And you staged a break-in at the studio.
You burned cigarette holes in Gino's clothes, all to divert attention away from yourself.
Well, it worked.
And then you ransacked his house, hoping to destroy any evidence that linked you as brother and sister.
But there was nothing there! He'd completely forgotten about me.
He loved being famous more than he loved me! Julie, Gino wasn't just doing it for the fame.
He was doing it for the money.
- He was being blackmailed, Julie - No.
by Carlo Liotti.
Him and Billy Carson and Rupert Maddox, he was protecting himself.
Protecting himself from what? Gino wasn't in love with Gidget like everybody thought.
He had a secret.
A secret he shared with Billy and with Rupert.
No-one knew about them.
It wasn't like that.
Come on.
(VOICE SHAKING) I knew my brother, he wasn't like that.
No! He wasn't like that! I'm sorry.
(SOMBRE MUSIC PLAYS) What have I done? I'm sorry.
- (SOBBING) What have I done? - Come here.
No! (JULIE SOBBING) What have I done? (SOBBING) (SOMBRE MUSIC CONTINUES) EDWINA: Your money, Mr Liotti.
The lost police file on your husband and his friend.
So, you'll agree to stop your henchmen from ever brutalising Billy for payment and to never make contact again? And, if his preferences or my husband's are ever made public, I will expose your corruption.
It is an honour to do business.
(DOOR CLOSES) (EXHALES) Oh, well done, Winnie.
(BOTH LAUGHING) CARLO: Violetta.
You sing beautifully - as you always did.
- Thank you.
No more flowers, Carlo.
Understand.
Goodbye, Carlo.
(ERIC GRUNTS) I would have got you to the airport faster.
Yeah, especially in that fancy sportscar that you won't let me drive.
I wish you were coming with me, Per.
No, this is your fork in the road.
You go and have some fun.
Mm? I'm so proud of you.
Look after yourself, OK? You too.
(SIGHS) Mm.
(CAR ENGINE STARTS) (KNOCKING) After all that excitement, I think our stomachs might need settling.
Ah, Ama-row? Amaro.
My father's special recipe.
Salute.
Salute.
Mm?! (COUGHING) (LAUGHING) My father always said, "Beware the man who gulps his liquor he lives dangerously.
" Is this true? Well, in some respects.
Perhaps not when it counts.
I don't feel so unlucky in love anymore.
Neither do I.
I've got to tell you I'm feeling so blue Should we say goodbye to the past? I just did.
Alright now! Everybody's got a baby Everybody's got somebody Everybody's got a baby but me Oh, yeah! Everybody gets some lovin' Everybody getting - Peregrine! Detective Steed.
Have I done something wrong? Are you here to arrest me? I'm here to apologise to your ex-boyfriend.
With beer? Is that how blokes do it? (CHUCKLES) Well, you just missed him.
He's gone off to start a new life.
Well, what about you? What are you doing? I was just going for a drive.
Would you like to come? Sure.
Get in quick.
Go on, get in, before I change my mind.
I've got to tell you I'm feeling so blue And if you stack it, I will never forgive you.

As if I'm going to take advice from you.
Trying to be helpful.
- Just like this.
- That's enough.
