Shot in the Dark (2017) s01e02 Episode Script
Crash and Burn
- Are they in there? - Yeah.
Better get out, man.
Better get out.
I can't see anybody else.
Stay with me, buddy.
You okay? Hey.
Stay with me.
Stay with me.
Very good, there you go.
Keep your head still, man.
Keep your head still.
You'll be okay.
Help is on the way, okay? Was there anybody else in the car with you? You're okay.
You're gonna be okay.
Just don't move your head.
Help is on the way.
You're coming up on an auto fire on the freeway.
Rog.
Where at? - 110 and Gage.
- Oh, it's right there.
Okay, I'll come down and say hi.
That's a good-going fire.
Ah, shit.
That's ripping, man.
Fuck.
Fuck, if there's people in that, they are donezo.
I hope he's okay.
- Hey.
Hey, you all right? - He's out.
You all right? Hey.
- Is he breathing? All right.
- He's breathing.
He has a pulse.
We need to back up.
- Hey, back up.
- Okay.
I've got his neck.
- Ready? - Yeah.
Okay, let's put him down.
- Hey, stop! - It's all right, buddy.
Stay with me, man.
You're gonna be all right.
- You're gonna be all right.
- Hang on.
They're here.
- Hey, help's coming.
- Help's here.
Help's here.
I know you can hear me.
Paramedics are here.
Hey, we need someone here.
At least one.
All right.
Let me get in there.
He's still alive.
What's going on, buddy? Can you talk to me? Yeah? Talk to me.
Can you talk? - You okay? - I pulled him out the car.
I just passed.
I got off at Manchester, came back around.
By the time I came up the ramp, it was blazing.
So, you got him out.
- Doesn't look like anyone else is inside.
- No.
Couldn't see anybody.
We were there.
We saw the whole thing happen.
- Did you get it on tape? - Yeah.
The whole lot.
Including the car bursting into flames.
My God, I've never got out of my car and run over as quick in my life.
Let's go.
Austin? - You okay? - Yeah.
Oh, fuck.
- Did you pull him out of the car? - Yeah.
- Are you burned? Are you hurt? - No, it's just smoke.
- Did you get it on tape? Holy shit.
- They got the crash on tape.
Steve, you got him pulling the guy out? They picked him up and brought him this way.
- You got shots of them? - I got them.
- They've got the crash on tape, though.
- Yeah? I'm curious.
I want that footage.
Let me put my camera away.
Let me talk to Austin.
Austin.
Steve's got the shot of you guys going in, with pulling the guy out.
You wanna put that in with your stuff? What do you wanna do? If you've got the thing on tape, you're on point.
The story is what matters.
If we can help tell that story, we're at your disposal.
What do you want? We can split it down the middle.
- Wanna do that? - Whatever you want.
Let's do that.
I'll send it in.
- What a day.
- Certified hero now.
Oh, fucking hell.
That guy's got the rest of his life to thank you for it.
If I didn't do it, somebody else would've.
Fuck, look at that.
That's a bad one.
I just need one victim.
One victim.
There's the shot I need.
There's a baby car seat in the middle of the road.
Kind of brings it home.
That's the last thing I wanna have happen to my kid.
Apparently, it's a 1-year-old.
That is my worst nightmare.
Absolute worst nightmare.
People tell me, "I want to be a stringer.
" I've told a lot of people that the job is not what they think it is.
It's not all fun and games.
It's a hard job to do.
It's not about driving fast.
It's about journalism and telling our story, and telling the stories that need to be told.
And I've told numerous people, "Choose another career.
Go down a different route.
" - Hello? - Holy fuck.
What? I just saved somebody's life.
Bullshit.
Yeah, I saved his life.
I pulled him out of the car.
You what? I pulled him out of a burning car.
Out of a burning car? I got the whole thing on tape.
- Bullshit.
Are you all right? - Oh, I guess so.
No, I'm not, honestly.
The whole car burst into flames.
You're fucking joking.
We're still here.
I've gotta give a statement.
- I'll come and meet you somewhere.
- All right.
Holy shit.
He is upset.
I've never heard him like that before.
I can't believe the stuff we have to go through.
It can be really dangerous.
- Are you burned at all? - I think my hair is singed.
Yeah.
A bit of smoke.
Nothing that bad.
- Thanks for what you did.
- No problem.
- Are you Austin? - Yes.
- Thank you, on behalf of that gentleman.
- Not a problem.
- You're welcome.
- You'll be hearing from me again.
- Oh, shit.
- "Oh, shit" is right, Austin.
"Oh, shit" is right.
This is the story of the night.
This is a national story.
This is gonna be on every station, 'cause everybody is gonna want this.
The more clients you sell to, the more money you're gonna make.
Might be an obscene amount of money.
Might be a good story going on.
Somebody was robbed for his wallet, no big deal, but it sounds like they took his dog, too.
That's a story.
We're gonna go to that, and if they have a dog in that car, we are golden retriever.
I've done this before when it comes to lost children.
Um, I don't think I've ever done this with a dog, but one of the things I can do to not make me look like an asshole is I can be helpful.
I can ask them for a picture of the dog, and I can get this on TV as soon as 5 a.
m.
I can help out in this situation and earn a buck or two at the same time.
And I'm an animal owner, and I don't mind helping.
'Cause even if we don't get the owner, the dog is the story.
There it is.
Come on, dude, please have a dog.
Hey, sir.
Just media over here.
Is there a dog in there? - Dog? - Is there a dog in the vehicle? - You can film.
Do it there.
- I understand.
I'm getting a story.
Somebody was robbed - and their dog was taken.
- We're in the middle of an incident.
- Once it calms down, I can talk.
- I understand.
That was just a simple yes or no.
I'll ask this guy.
Is there a dog in there? - Is there a dog in the car? - A dog? Yeah.
Didn't you guys recently have a 211 where a guy took a dog and a wallet? - No, this is different.
- Gotcha.
Somebody was on the phone, while on the phone with their girlfriend, the girlfriend heard: "Give me your wallet and your dog.
" And I thought I might be getting two calls.
This is related, but we didn't hear the dog part.
Gotcha.
It sounds like it was more road rage.
So, we're figuring it out.
It's not what we wanted it to be.
It's really not.
I don't see a dog pop up.
Damn.
You gotta be shaking still.
I've never heard you sound like that.
Ever.
Fucking hell.
He's already been hit by two cars.
I bet you were nervous as hell.
I didn't know if anybody was in there.
CHP said they were out.
Oh! - Fuck me.
- Shit.
You have got to be kidding me.
- That's it.
- You have got to be kidding me.
Yeah.
No doubt in my mind you saved a life.
How many other people would jump in like that? - Not many.
- No.
If anybody says to me, "How can you do that? You just watch people die and don't help.
" Exactly.
I'm shaking for you.
It's unbelievable.
Next at 11, a driver rescued after explosions on the 110 Freeway.
See how video journalists rushed to help.
Another videographer captured the driver being pulled away from the car.
Talk about cameramen being at the right place at the right time.
The way I have it set up, is so I can go be a stringer.
I don't have to chase money.
Lisa and my mom take care of the part that I don't wanna do, which is the business.
Hey, everybody.
- How are you? - Good.
- Good to see you.
- Good to see you.
What are you doing? - Working.
- How am I doing? - You want the truth? - No.
- Should we sugarcoat it? - No.
- You were the top dog.
- Sounds about right.
Enough business talk.
Where's the kids? Lisa is the cutest little thing I've ever seen.
I shouldn't have fell in love with her when I did.
She was 19.
I was 25.
I never really gave our relationship an honest chance, so, we broke up in 2005.
And in order to get over me, she got married, had two kids and moved to Texas.
Found out she was getting divorced when I came out of a relationship, and I was like, "We're both in a position where we can be honest with each other.
" And we are.
It's a blessing.
I have a couple add-ons, but they're my kids.
Not to take anything away from their dad, but I look at them and they're my kids.
And here we are making a family.
Don't know how close you are to Santa Clarita, but there is a working commercial fire.
Copy that.
I'm heading up to the fire.
We're on our way to a structure fire.
They can be dangerous, but if there's a fire, you gotta check it out.
Fire is visually awesome.
This is gonna be a visual story.
Pretty is what sells.
That is the moneymaker.
If it's as big as it says it is, we're gonna see it from a distance.
Let's park out of the way.
I won't go around those cops.
See all that smoke? Yeah.
Fox Feed and Tackle.
Equestrian and pet supplies.
Whew! Oh, my God.
One of the things I like to do is shoot fire.
If it's a big fire, the networks like that establishing shot.
I try to get pro-looking stuff, then I get point-of-view, because I work in an industry that, the more creative you are, the better.
Morning.
You just missed it.
Missed it? How come the firefighters are still here? I love it when they say that.
All he did now was make me work harder.
Little bitch.
Wanna fuck with me? In my world of stringing, there's competition.
But I don't like when stringers tell me, "Oh, it's over," or "Where you been?" or "You're late.
" I didn't see him on the other side.
I didn't see him on the side of the hill.
I didn't see him anywhere, except that front little area.
But he probably got some good flames.
But he didn't work the story.
I'm gonna try to make my way out of here.
He's probably not used to competitors, especially me.
He knows who I am.
I don't know who he is.
Red 5 back in the vehicle.
Fucking tell me I missed it.
"It's over.
" We'll see who gets the stuff on TV in the morning.
Hello, Scott.
- Hi, how are you? - I'm good.
Gonna be the barn fire in Santa Clarita.
I don't like when stringers tell me I missed stories.
They get there, "Where were you?" All it does is make me work harder.
I make a lot doing what I do, so I'm gonna give it away to you.
Free, no charge.
- Thank you.
We appreciate it.
- You're welcome.
Bye.
When they arrived, several outbuildings were burning, so they called in more crews.
In the end, 150 firefighters responded to this blaze.
They were able to knock the fire out in about an hour.
No one was hurt.
The cause is under investigation.
There's a BMW under a semi with two other vehicles in the right shoulder.
CHP is saying not injury.
On a vehicle under a big rig, I doubt that, but you never know.
Wow.
Wow! Look at that.
Are you fucking kidding me? Go, go.
Go up.
Up.
We don't want you guys here.
Go up.
- What? - We don't want you here.
- We're doing an investigation.
- Do you want us? - Go up.
Stay by your cars.
- It's a car under a trailer.
We see what it is.
There's no injuries.
- It's not a crime scene.
- It is until we determine it's not.
It's a traffic incident.
If you want me to go further south or north, fine.
If you have a sergeant I'd like to see your credentials.
Yeah, of course.
- Take them off, please.
- Yeah.
OnScene.
- We wanna take care of people.
- No, I understand.
- If you want us to go south - Go further south.
Okay, that's fine.
No worries.
Never had an issue with CHP.
Ever.
Hey, so, I've got a BMW underneath the trailer of a catering truck.
The whole trailer is balancing on top of the car.
And the driver is fine.
Non-injury.
I don't even think it's DUI.
Yeah, he's just an asshole driving a BMW too fast.
That's what it looks like.
It's a testament to German ingenuity, is what it is.
Hey, boss.
I don't normally talk to the victims at incidents, but you should be dead now.
You're lucky.
- Yeah.
- Seriously, man.
I know a bunch of stations that would love this, 'cause it is definitely a weird incident.
Normally, this would've been a physical rescue.
This could've gone so unbelievably differently.
And I'm amazed nobody got hurt.
I'm absolutely amazed.
Here's a sight you don't see very often.
A car underneath a big rig, and miraculously, nobody was hurt.
The CHP says alcohol was not a factor in this accident between that white BMW and that large catering truck.
Distracted driving and speed are possibilities.
Stringing.
Stringing.
I don't have a retirement plan.
I wanna have it figured out by 40 and out by 45.
I'm 42, and I have it figured out.
I don't want to be out.
I'm having fun.
Traffic collision involving a motorcycle at Manchester and Central.
Red 5 en route.
TC involving motorcycle.
Update.
We have two victims.
Oh, we got a double.
We got a double going.
We're about two minutes out.
Go.
Go.
Motorcycle riding's not a death wish, but crashes are like gangster shootings.
The news looks at it as in, it happens all the time, it's not news.
But when it comes to double motorcycle fatality, that stuff makes the news, and they're usually not good.
There he is.
That's not good.
That's not good.
They're hurting.
But they're both moving.
They're both alive.
It's surreal.
It looks like two people just laying there.
Were they both on the bike, or did the bike hit the girl? - They were both on the bike.
- Both? - You see it? - I didn't.
I think one of them saw it.
Where's her helmet, was she wearing one? I believe she wasn't.
Did they fall, or did somebody hit them? I think someone hit them.
The car's over there.
You can see the damage.
But I don't see a driver.
If it is a hit-and-run, now we got a story.
415, man with a gun, Ventura and Vineland.
- Standby for additional.
- Fuck.
Shit.
Man with a gun about a block away.
If he opens fire or takes a hostage, this will sell.
Shit, this could get ugly.
We're gonna be there before the cops.
That is pure luck.
The right place at the right time.
Vineland, in front of the gates.
Hispanic, 30s, brown jacket.
I have the best luck in the industry.
It pisses my brothers off.
I can be driving out in the middle of nowhere, and a bank gets robbed across the street.
My luck's incredible.
It's around here somewhere.
Those people are pointing over this way.
Incident 4599 Where is he? This'll be interesting, getting him pulling that gun out.
He's not here.
There he is.
Apparently, this guy has a gun.
Fuck.
This isn't gonna go well.
He's gonna fight with this guy.
Watch.
He's wearing a black sweater, white shirt, black pants.
Object in the window above.
Let's just go around this way, then.
Fuck.
It's a man with a gun.
You know what? Fuck this shit.
Don't wanna risk this with a kid.
He's standing there waiting.
Fuck.
This woman, she's lucky to be alive after crashing.
She wasn't wearing a helmet.
- Did you guys see the car? - It's right there.
Waiting for the second ambulance.
They sometimes put two in one but that's not what they're doing.
See how she keeps holding her jacket? I've seen it multiple times.
When in a situation like that, you grab the closest thing to you.
She's looking up at the sky, she has no friends nearby, that jacket is the closest thing she knows right now.
It's like Linus and his security blanket.
You grab it, 'cause it's yours.
The news isn't trying to teach a lesson, it tries to make money, but it's a lesson.
Real simple, man.
Wear a helmet.
She should've been wearing the helmet.
If there's one helmet, he doesn't like her that much.
Here we go.
Hispanic man with a gun.
Shit.
It's been five minutes, there's still no cops.
There he is, here.
As much as I wanna get a story, I don't wanna be the story.
If the cops are coming up behind us, this is gonna get bad quick.
I'm gonna get out.
The cops are coming.
Wow.
I'm shaking.
That could've gone bad quick.
That's the first time I've been concerned for my safety in the last few years.
Before my kid was born, I would've been out there with the camera on him, but at this point in my life, it's not worth it.
My wife will be happy when I tell her I put my vest on.
Or I don't tell her about the call.
With one shot of the guy getting arrested and no other coverage, that's not gonna sell.
When I first started doing it, I was crazy.
Wouldn't care less about what happened.
Didn't have any fear.
I'd walk into anything.
Walk into a burning building, doesn't bother me.
Now appreciating life a lot more I have a lot of fear.
I might not show it on the outside, but I have a lot of fear.
I wanna go home, provide for my family.
I don't want to die out there.
Three-car rollover, DUI, on Aliso and Broadway.
You gotta be fucking kidding me.
Here we go.
Oh, shit.
Yeah, okay, here we go.
I'll take that.
We'll be responding over to a vehicle that is rolled over on Broadway and Aliso.
Fuck.
Move.
What the fuck you doing? Fuck, man.
Okay, let's go.
Somebody do something.
We're here.
From what I can see, it looks like I'll be the first stringer there.
I'll stick back here first, get a look at the scene.
Then we'll get up, probably get kicked out.
Three-car TC, one of them rolled over.
All three cars have significant damage.
We also need to see if a DUI was involved.
Visually, a great story, upside-down car, downtown, lot of pretty lights.
It looks like we got a driver over there.
That's who police are talking to.
Hey, how's it going? Can I park here and walk over? - Park right here.
- Sweet.
Thanks, guys.
Got the friendly cops.
See the white flashing? I'm pretty sure that's Zak.
Alrighty.
Zak and I were close when he first came out.
I taught Zak a lot.
But in the past, there has been negative tension between Zak and I.
He's on his sticks.
It's not a story where I need to be on my sticks.
Sticks don't look good on TV.
Scott's here, walking through everything.
Let's see how long that lasts.
Scott's a founding member of OnScene.
I've never heard the real story.
A disagreement with the guy who brought me on.
And now it's somebody, you know, not quite half his age, but somebody younger is doing with OnScene what I don't think any of them could've done.
They're just not capable.
- You guys are climbing mountains? - Good evening.
Hello, Zak.
How are you? When Zak took over OnScene, he expanded.
He had a conversation with Josh, an old friend of mine.
He told Josh he wanted to put me out of business.
Josh said, "Scott's a roach.
He ain't going anywhere.
" I confronted Zak.
"Putting me out of business?" He's like, "I didn't say that.
" I'm like, "You did.
" It's a business.
We sell news.
We have to make a living.
We cover news because we are journalists at heart, but we have to feed ourselves.
We can't do it for fun or for free, because we wouldn't be able to, physically.
No way to do it.
That's what it comes to.
Do it faster and better than they're doing it.
That's all it comes down to.
Oh, we got the guy doing the FSB.
With a DUI, we want the field sobriety test on tape, because TV stations like that.
Yeah, that's not looking too good.
You don't wanna laugh, especially if your car's flipped in an intersection and there's people with injuries.
It's pretty goddamn serious.
- I missed that shot, the angle - Can't see.
He got it right there, though.
That sucks.
That's the money shot.
You get anxiety because you wanna get the shot and not miss the shot.
Competition's a big deal.
- How's it going? - Hey.
- Good to see you.
- Uh-oh.
Watch.
Here he comes.
Mr.
CEO.
Give them my card, let them know who I am.
Lemme give you a card.
We're on TV sometimes.
- Okay.
No problem.
- All the time.
I'm Zak with OnScene.
I'm the boss.
Here we go.
Hi, sarge.
How you doing? Good to see you.
Here's my card.
I've been doing this 17 years.
I haven't made a friend yet.
Not what I'm here for, to make friends.
- All right.
It's good seeing you.
- You too.
You know, shows his pretty white face.
Shows them his business card.
The word was Zak used to tell officers and firefighters that I give stringing a bad name.
I don't know what he has against me, but he's dangerous.
I know exactly what he's capable of.
He's done some shady things.
Just comes down to talking shit, and in the world that I grew up in, there's consequences to your actions.
Police say three vehicles were involved, one of them overturned.
Four people were in the vehicle that did flip over.
All four taken to a local hospital.
Just had minor injuries, fortunately.
One of the drivers was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence.
