Sins of Our Mother (2022) s01e02 Episode Script

Dark Spirits

1
Okay, is he awake
and responsive or unconscious?
Unconscious.
Okay,
and are you wanting to start CPR?
No, I don't know how to do that.
I can walk you through it.
Now what I want you to do
is you're gonna put one hand
- in the center of his chest.
- Okay.
You're gonna interlock
your fingers, keeping your arms straight,
and you're gonna press down
hard and fast into his chest.
Can you see anything?
Any response
Uh, he's not responding at all.
And there's nobody
else there, just you and him? Correct?
Correct.
He's, what,
married to your sister? Where is she?
I don't know. I think she's,
uh, taking her son to school.
Police
and medics are on their way.
Thank you.
Let me know when
they get inside. Is the front door open?
Yeah.
It's unlocked.
Okay. Can you come out?
- Walk outside with your hands empty?
- Sure.
Are you able to do that?
Hands up and empty?
Yep.
Come out this way, man.
- You don't have no weapons?
- No weapons on me.
- Alright. Come on out this way.
- Yep.
- You have a seat right here on the curb.
- Yep.
No one else is in the house.
- Have a seat.
- Yep.
- Get the team in.
- Yeah.
- Have a seat.
- Hey team, scene is secure.
We got the gentleman out.
Uh, have fire roll in.
Chandler Police Department!
Anybody inside, make yourself known!
Ten minutes.
Hey team,
we got one subject down.
Apparent gunshot wound to the chest.
The firearm's
in the front bedroom
laying on the ground next to a case.
You wanna stay here,
I'll see if I can get this guy's info.
One, two, three, four shots.
Did you get the guy inside's name?
- No, I haven't had anything yet
- Charles Vallow.
Charles Vallow? Spell that?
V-A-L-L-O-W.
What happened today?
How did it get to this?
I had been
in Phoenix for about a year.
Turning general assignment stories,
mainly hard news.
July 2019, there was a shooting.
And at first, Charles Vallow
was a man that was shot and killed
in self-defense, allegedly.
We started investigating.
We were the only ones
in this Phoenix market
really taking interest in the case.
I realized that
this was something different.
I never thought
it would turn into what it is now.
- You have some ID on you, sir?
- Yeah.
What's going on? What happened?
Well, he came at me with a bat.
- Was he living here or visiting?
- No.
He came to pick up his son.
- Okay. Is the son inside?
- No.
My sister took him to school.
- It was just you at the house?
- Yes.
And he came, how long
What time did he come
to pick up pick up the son?
Uh, I don't know, 20 minutes ago, maybe?
Okay. And so you get in an argument?
What is it over?
Well, it was over my sister.
He was He was, uh,
getting physical with her,
and so my niece came out with her bat.
And then he took the bat from her.
I thought
you said your niece left?
She did, but this was before.
He was getting close,
and she came out to defend my sister
with her bat.
- Your niece.
- Yes.
- Okay.
- She poked at him, he took it away.
Okay.
I I stepped in and told them
they needed to separate.
- Right.
- So then my sister leaves with my niece.
And how long ago did they leave?
It's been like an hour? Ten minutes?
- Twenty minutes maybe? I don't know.
- Okay.
I think he came in a rental car,
and I think my sister's in it.
Meanwhile,
Lori takes Charles's rental car.
Takes JJ to Burger King
and drops him off at school.
$7.39.
And then buy flip-flops
for herself and Tylee at Walgreens
before finally returning to
the home where this all happened.
Where are you both at?
- The living room, and then
- Okay.
I turned around.
And he hit me in the back
of the head with the bat.
So, I went to my room and got my gun.
Okay, and you
brought a gun with you?
- Yes.
- You always bring one?
I have a concealed carry.
I always Just to be safe.
Hi, who are are you?
- His wife.
- Okay.
Just stand over there
for just a second, guys.
And then, uh
I just went to the living room.
"What is your problem?"
- With the gun?
- Yes,
and I said, "Put that bat down,"
and he wouldn't do it.
And he came at me with the bat again,
after he'd already hit me in the head, so
I shot him to stop him.
Okay, then what happened?
That was it.
Let me see your head.
You got a laceration.
You want me to call paramedics?
No, I'd really like some water, though.
This is like about an inch,
a little bigger than an inch.
Let me get your information.
- Does your husband live here, or no?
- No, he lives in Houston.
- Gotcha, okay.
- We're separated.
Gotcha. How long have you guys lived here?
- I'm sorry?
- How long have you lived here?
- Like three weeks.
- Oh, jeez. Yeah, okay.
That's why the neighbors
don't know us.
- Gotcha.
- Like, "Hi, neighbor! Sorry!"
Are you working?
- Uh, no.
- Okay.
And you're still about five-six?
One twenty?
What?
Hello, young lady.
And let me get your information.
How old are you again?
- Sixteen.
- Do you have a driver's license?
- I do, it's inside.
- Nice.
You're a new driver?
You like that?
- Well, almost 17.
- Almost?
Ah, so you're an old hat then.
And you live here with Mom?
When we first got
body camera video, she is clearly smiling.
She doesn't even ask if Charles is okay.
Thank you, ma'am.
Okay, hang tight, guys.
Your husband just died.
like they don't care. They're so hurtful.
I think what high school looks like,
they're popping things
Lori just
seemed to be ready for this.
Like she expected this to happen.
Because why would she act so nonchalant?
She was answering questions.
She was cooperating.
- Your brother lives there with you?
- No.
He had stayed with me
last night because I was worried
he was gonna come over
and cause trouble with me.
- Okay.
- And
just wanted someone else there,
like my brother there,
because I trust my brother and
Lori said that Charles was
gonna take JJ to school Friday
and bring him And pick him up.
He took JJ out to put him
in the car and he forgot his phone.
And she saw some things
on his phone that really upset her.
And he came back to get his phone.
And she said
that's when they got in a fight,
and she wouldn't give him his phone,
and she was running with it.
And that's when Tylee
woke up and got the bat.
They were screaming at each other,
and that woke Alex up.
I didn't do anything
with the baseball bat.
I kind of just held it there.
And he was getting
really close to my mom,
so I kind of stuck it out,
like, between them.
And they were both just yelling,
and he was like,
"If you hit me with that baseball bat,
you're gonna go to jail."
And I just kind of stood there
with the baseball bat.
Your mom told you to go.
Did you see what happened
with your stepdad and uncle?
- No.
- Okay.
She heard the shot out there.
I guess there were two shots.
She heard them.
But she said they didn't sound real loud,
like it didn't freak her out.
The kids had been outside by that time,
and I heard the gunshot.
Mm-hmm. So, you heard the shot?
I didn't see the shot, I heard it.
And I came back around
and I saw he was on the ground.
- Okay.
- And I was freaking out.
- Yeah.
- And so I was just freaking out.
I just went in to mom mode.
I'm like, I've gotta go
to get JJ to school.
I've gotta get to the kids. I just
I'm like, I gotta get to the kids.
When she went outside with your brother,
you never came back inside?
Oh, I went to go get my mom's purse
- Okay.
- from inside
so that we could have, like,
her wallet and everything.
So when I went in, I kind of,
like, just tuned everything out,
ran to my mom's closet, ran back.
So, I didn't see anything,
I didn't hear anything.
When did you go back in and get her purse?
- Um, after my mom came out.
- Okay.
Did you you or your brother
say anything at some point
about calling the police or calling 911?
Do you remember?
- Yeah, he called me.
- Okay.
And he said,
"Are you taking JJ to school?"
And I said, "Yeah, we need to call
the police," and he said, "Okay."
Tylee didn't see anything
after Charles grabbed the bat from her.
I can't picture a scenario where
she would make that up to help her mother.
People say,
"Well, she'd do whatever Lori told her."
I don't think that's true at all.
She's a teenager.
You put your gun back in your room.
- Yep.
- Where'd you set it at?
- Uh, just on the floor.
- Okay.
So you set it on the floor,
um, get your phone.
- Yep. Yep.
- Call 911.
And then when did you
realize Lori had gone?
Did you call her?
- No.
- Okay.
When you just read the police report
on what happened in Chandler,
it just looks like
a self-defense shooting.
It was a argument
that turned into a shooting
in self-defense by Alex.
And that's it.
Alex, Alex. All right, we're gonna walk
over to the room where your sister is.
Sure.
They said, you know,
you can go ahead and go.
And they never brought
him in for questioning again.
They told him they'd have to
go through the DA and clear it,
but they were satisfied
at the time it was self-defense.
No one else is in the house.
- Okay, have a seat.
- Yep.
Later, we found out Alex called 911
43 minutes after he called Lori.
Chandler Police Department!
Anybody inside, make yourself known!
And we learn
that he never really performed any CPR
or gave any medical attention to Charles.
The autopsy shows that
he was shot the second time
while he was laying on the ground.
Hey team,
we got one subject down.
Apparent gunshot wound to the chest.
So, I was at work.
My mom calls me.
I don't remember
what the conversation was.
She just kind of broke it like,
"So, Charles died this morning."
She goes, "He had a heart attack."
"He came over to get JJ,
had a heart attack, and died."
And I was like, "Are you okay?
Is Tylee okay? Is JJ okay?"
Like, I was freaking out.
Colby called me and said, "I need to
tell you something, Charles is dead."
And I was like, "Are you serious?
That's, like, crazy. What happened?"
And he said,
"I got off the phone with my mom,
and she said that
Charles had a heart attack."
And, he was like, so just shooken up,
that I don't even think things that
I was saying were registering to him.
Like, he was just in his thoughts.
I remember getting off the phone with him.
And I had called my mom and I told her
and she was like, "Are you serious?"
And I was like, "Yeah, this doesn't
feel right." I remember telling her that.
This doesn't sound right to me.
I felt so uneasy.
I'm, like, foggy at that point.
I walk in the house,
and I see Alex on the couch.
And he's wearing a bandage
around his head.
I will never forget
just the feeling in that house.
Tylee's at the door, and she just
cries and just falls into my stomach.
I go, "Where is Mom at?"
Like, "What is what is going on?"
And I walk outside and I go,
"What happened?"
And she's like,
"Charles and Al got in a fight
and Al shot him."
And I just went, "What?"
And I went in the house.
And Al said that something about,
"He hit me with a bat,
so I shot him twice."
And I was like, "What?"
This is my dad, this is really
the father figure of my life
who's been there for as long
as I can even remember back to.
And the fact that she would
lie about how Charles died
still blows my mind.
Shortly after,
Lori texts Charles's sons.
How do you tell your stepsons
that their father has died
over text message?
And she doesn't respond for hours.
She says she's waiting
on the medical examiner.
She never says
that he was shot by Alex Cox.
She tells JJ's school
that Charles committed suicide.
So there's three different stories.
I remember after he got home,
he was, like, pale.
That's when I was like, okay,
right now, this second, this is it.
Like, I don't want anything to do
with your entire family after this.
That was hard.
There's so much running through my mind.
Like, was it Lori? Did Alex take the fall?
Like, why would she
say he had a heart attack
and then, like, tell Colby
in person that it was different? Like,
why is Alex staying at her house?
Like, he never, from what I know,
ever stayed the night there.
So why was he just
magically there that night specifically?
I was like, "That doesn't sound right."
Claims Department, this is Robin.
May I have the name of the insured?
L. Charles Vallow.
And what was the cause
of his passing?
Um
Well, he was shot.
Are you aware of who the
primary beneficiary of the policy is?
Um, it's me.
Within a couple days
of Charles being shot and killed,
Lori files a claim
with his life insurance company,
but finds out she is
no longer the beneficiary
of Charles's $1 million policy.
Right after Charles was killed,
my mom was acting really crazy.
She just said,
"I've gotta be really careful."
"People are after me."
And she made it seem like she had enemies.
And then my mom calls me and tells me
that she's moving somewhere cold.
And, "We'll be back a lot,
we'll be back every couple weeks."
She told me she got a job
and that Ty was gonna try to go to school.
So it seemed like
they were trying to build this life.
They were actually
going somewhere for a reason.
The last time I saw her
they were packing.
And it was hard
hard to say goodbye to Ty-Ty.
She was crying.
And she just looked really upset.
And I asked what's wrong. She didn't talk.
She didn't tell me where they were going.
I don't even know what she knew.
I remember just giving her,
like, this pathetic hug,
and her just not really talking,
'cause she was so upset.
She didn't say much.
Tylee always put on a brave face.
I said,
"Are you gonna be okay, little doll?"
And she just burst into tears.
And I was just talking to her
and I said, "What's wrong?"
She said, "I'm okay, Mimi,
I've got everything I need."
She said, "I just needed to cry."
So
we just sat there
and hugged for a long time.
And they just
left Arizona the next morning.
I mean, it was that fast.
It seemed like Tylee was also following
this idea that they were either in danger
or something was happening.
So, my mom was just playing
every card on everybody. Like,
she played everybody in a certain way
to make sure that everything felt okay.
And that was it.
I was so worried about them.
But my focus isn't on them,
because Kelsee had got pregnant.
Because of her health stuff,
she was high risk.
I was really, really sick in the beginning
of my pregnancy to where I couldn't eat.
I lost 15 pounds.
But when Riley was born,
it was the best day of our lives.
Mama.
I don't know if
she's obsessed with red,
but watch this girl
when she sees this. Ready?
Riley.
I was literally at work all day,
and I was taking care of Riley the second
I got up and the second I got home.
She's brand-new. Four months.
Did not come with a receipt.
We're keeping her forever.
And, Kelsee and I have
our own marriage stuff,
we have our own everything.
I was so focused on my baby and my wife
and making sure I can provide
for them and figure life out for myself.
I kind of cut myself off from
everyone and was focused on my family.
I hadn't talked to Tylee on the phone,
I hadn't heard her voice.
I just got random texts.
So, Tylee's birthday,
September 24th, I text her.
And it's like, "Happy birthday."
"Hope you guys are doing good.
Love you so much. Blah, blah, blah."
And she just said,
"Thanks, Colbs. I love you."
All lowercase.
The feeling was weird,
because she didn't sound like Tylee.
I even texted her, I remember
I was like, "Hey, are you mad at me?"
Like, "Did I do something wrong?
Or do you need some space?"
Like, "I don't want to bug you.
I just love you and I wanna talk to you."
I called my mom and confronted her.
And she acted really weird about Tylee,
but she tried to convince me
that Tylee was in school, having new
A new life, friends, trying to move on.
She's like, "She'll just
call you when she has a chance."
So she tries to
reassure me and put it away.
Those texts didn't feel right,
and that's when I called it out.
I was like,
"Tylee, this does not sound like you."
"You don't speak this way.
You don't use punctuation here. Like,
so, why don't you call me and talk to me."
And that's when she stopped.
I remember
Lori shut her phone off.
'Cause we tried to call her,
she shut her phone off.
I was really worried about the kids.
I started investigating,
because something just seemed so off.
I would research Lori's name,
and then I found their podcast,
and I was listening to that.
But then I remember Charles was
sending e-mails before he was murdered.
She
she's
lost her mind. I I
I never read them.
Colby and I weren't interested in that.
We thought it was really
dramatic and not our business.
He was freaking out.
And at that time,
it looked like a guilty person.
I I was convinced that
he had cheated, at least.
I was like, "I'm not saying anything.
This is between you and my mom."
"You're adults. I have
too much going on in my life
to worry about your marriage with her."
"You guys need to figure this out."
So I went back
and I started reading
all the e-mails Charles had sent us.
I was like, I just have to
see what he was saying.
That's when I found
these family history documents.
The e-mail itself
was actually a forwarded e-mail to Lori.
Charles wrote, "She calls
her own daughter a dark spirit."
"Please help her. Charles Vallow."
My throat fell in my stomach.
It was just like the list
of our friends and family,
and they are listed
as light and dark spirits.
We were like, "What does that mean,
light and dark spirits?"
She thinks I'm a dark spirit.
Whatever that means.
And I saw my name on there,
and I was a 3 dark spirit.
This is totally not okay.
Like, someone
sat there and made this list
as if they are, like, God or something,
making a list of who's good, who's evil.
To see like, my wife is dark,
my brother's dark, my cousin's dark.
Everyone on this list
is basically someone
that didn't love and adore my mom.
And, scrolling down,
I saw Tylee's name on there
and she was a 4.1 dark spirit.
So, how does she
pose a threat to your children?
I don't know
what she'll do with them.
If she'll flee with them or hurt them.
And then I saw the guy
who had sent the e-mail to Lori,
and I was like,
"Who the hell is Chad Daybell?"
Chad created this rating system.
Assigning numbers
to people as dark or light.
He claimed he can distinguish
evil spirits from good spirits.
He's making this appear
like it's a scientific system,
and it's valid.
If you are very dark,
your spirit has left.
Your body's now in limbo.
You're a zombie now.
And the only way to
free your spirit is to kill the body.
Chad said
there were 20,000 zombies.
I I believe the goal was
to eradicate the 20,000 zombies.
We got one subject down,
apparent gunshot wound to the chest.
We're not sure
what a zombie really is,
and also a zombie's
kind of a fictitious idea.
The part of that that makes sense
to me is, because it's so nebulous,
it gives Chad Daybell more power.
And if you want to know
who the 20,000 zombies are,
you got to go to the big man,
you gotta go to Chad.
Whatever murders he was
involved in were perfectly justifiable.
If these were zombies,
then they needed to be eliminated
so that he could realize his vision.
Hey there. Are you Brandon?
- Yeah.
- So, what's going on?
Someone shot my window out.
Give me a bit more.
Yeah, so I was just pulling in.
- I noticed a Jeep Wrangler.
- Okay.
So as I was kind of pulling in,
they lifted their, like, back window.
- Okay.
- I saw a muzzle. They shot.
Did it look like a, a rifle type?
Yeah, it looked like a
rifle or something. There was a muzzle.
There was like
some kind of muzzle thing on it.
And, they just lifted up
the back gate and shot.
October 2nd, 2019,
Brandon Boudreaux was pulling
into his driveway in Gilbert, Arizona.
And he's shot at.
At the time, Brandon is in the process
of getting divorced
from Lori Vallow's niece, Melani,
who appeared to be following
both Chad and Lori in this group.
Do you have any enemies?
Any Anybody that you?
- I just went through a divorce.
- Okay.
There was some
crazy stuff that happened with her aunt.
I would hope that has
nothing to do with this.
The only people that could even
that I could even think of
would be that group, but
The family?
He never gets a real
clear look at the shooter,
but he identifies the shooter's car,
a gray Jeep Wrangler.
Brandon believes it was Alex Cox.
And another source had
told me Lori called Alex her hit man.
Here's Al. There's the target.
What's that bullet?
That is a .50 caliber, semi-automatic.
And it's going into this humongous gun.
It's legal.
The Rexburg Police
did recover that Jeep
registered to Charles Vallow.
Charles had already been dead since July.
While I have no proof of this,
what the Lord has told me
was that Lucifer
told Chad that he and Lori
were the Davidic king and queen who
would start the Church of the Firstborn,
which is a lie.
Christ will start
the Church of the Firstborn,
not Chad Daybell and not Lori.
It's weird stuff.
He was He was into weird stuff.
Although, people would look
at me and think I'm weird. Um
But I know I work for the light side,
and I know Chad works for the dark side.
Lucifer was talking
in his ear to puff up his ego,
his vain ambition and pride.
And I believe that's
exactly how Lucifer got to him.
Chad Daybell was
wrong about a lot of stuff.
I mean, he seemed like
he'd been a good father,
and I I only saw him
treat his wife, Tammy, well,
even though he had questionable
things that I I saw going on.
Like, it's one thing if you suspect
somebody is having
an adulterous relationship,
it's a whole different deal
to accuse them of murder.
But the last time I saw him in person,
I asked about Tammy.
His eyes glazed over.
It was like he went into some kind
of trance and he was saying weird things.
He said, "I had a vision.
I saw Tammy in my truck."
"She went off the road, hit a pole"
And he could see
her spirit leave her body.
October 9th, 2019,
Tammy arrives home.
A man in a ski mask comes up to her,
shoots at her.
While she isn't hit,
she screams, calls for Chad.
She says Chad ran around to
the back after, uh, she screamed and was
trying to talk to this suspect
in a ski mask with a paintball gun.
The last time I saw him,
Chad said to me something
very disturbing and very alarming.
He leaned forward and he goes
"I just don't think my plan can move
forward till the spouses are dead."
And I looked at him and I said, "What?"
October 19th, Tammy dies.
Forty-nine-year-old healthy
woman passed away in her home.
It's hard not to see a pattern here
of financial gain as a motivation.
Charles Vallow, one million dollar
life insurance policy.
But Lori finds out
she's no longer the beneficiary.
And then learning how much money
Chad Daybell made off his wife
Tammy's life insurance policy.
Chad maxed it out,
and he made $430,000 after her death.
So they had the money,
and their end-of-the-world preparations
were quickly moving forward.
It seemed like Chad believed
certain people had to marry on Earth
in order to be sealed
for eternity in the afterlife.
Chad did give me a blessing one time
saying that I would get married again.
The way that they presented it was that
in order for people
to finish their mission,
they always had to have
somebody that was going to be
equal in their spirituality
and equal to them.
So then they started saying,
"Alex will be part of that for you."
"He will be the person who will
be able to help you with your mission."
And they were saying
that we should be together.
I was praying, and I was asking,
and I just got this feeling that,
okay, I think that
it's time for me to marry him.
November 29th,
Alex got married to Zulema Pastenes.
Even took her last name.
Lori's niece, Melani Boudreaux,
ends up meeting someone pretty quickly.
His name is Ian Pawlowski.
Melani and Ian Pawlowski
got married two weeks after they meet.
Lucky Little Wedding Chapel
I think is where Um, where we picked.
And then Alex and Zulema
just were there as our witnesses.
This group was unusually tight.
They ended up getting married
within one day of each other,
and were witnesses
at each other's weddings.
One of the most alarming
beliefs was that the world would end
on July 22nd, 2020.
It appears all these couples
are getting married to each other
to meet this July 2020 deadline.
Lori, um, wanted to check on JJ,
wanted to know that he's okay.
Meanwhile,
Kay Woodcock, JJ's grandma,
she can't get in contact with Lori,
she can't see her grandson,
so she's worried.
Lori, please
let us know that JJ's okay.
Please just let us know.
We need to see him.
Kay is desperate.
It's now November, and she hasn't
seen JJ in more than two months.
Kay Woodcock
gives a call to Gilbert Police.
And, like, "I haven't seen my grandson.
They just moved from Arizona."
"I had a 36-second FaceTime call
with him in August, that's it."
"Something's wrong."
Lori never called us.
Okay.
And she still hasn't talked to me.
She gets into Charles's e-mail
and sees that an
Amazon order was made in his name,
but Charles was already dead.
So, Kay suspects Lori
ordered this malachite ring
using Charles Vallow's account.
And the shipping address
is in Rexburg, Idaho.
Now Kay and Larry
actually have an address.
I was contacted
by Gilbert Police Department.
I was asked to do a
welfare check on a seven-year-old boy
by the name of Joshua Jackson Vallow.
Myself and Detective Hope
went to Lori Vallow's residence.
Lori?
We ended up
making contact with Alex Cox.
There was
someone else standing at the door.
And that was Chad Daybell.
I informed
Mr. Cox why I was there,
which was to do a welfare check on JJ.
Uh, he just looked at Daybell
and didn't answer my question initially.
I asked Alex if JJ was home,
and he stated that Joshua
was with his Grandma Kay in Louisiana.
I told Mr. Cox that was unlikely,
because Kay was the one who
originally called in the welfare check.
I asked Mr. Cox where I could find Lori,
and he stated that
she was in Apartment 107,
which was Melani Boudreaux's apartment.
Lori's niece.
And we find out that
Alex Cox and Melani Boudreaux,
they had also moved to
Rexburg, Idaho, right after Lori does.
They are all in the same complex.
I broke contact.
I felt there was something more
going on with the whereabouts of JJ,
so I wanted more officers over there.
Lieutenant Ron Ball,
Detective Dave Stubbs,
and Officer Kellen Whetten responded.
- Hi. Are you Lori?
- Hi. Yes.
Lori, I'm Lieutenant Ball
with the police department.
Are you all alone or can I help, or?
Um, my brother is here.
Okay, so
We had two detectives over here trying to
Looking for you.
And they ran into
probably one of your brothers.
My brother
and his friend, probably.
- Who's that?
- They've been moving. Chad.
Okay.
What's his last name?
Daybell.
- D-A-Y-B-E-L-L?
- Mm-hmm.
He's an author.
Isn't that the Chad Daybell that
Didn't his wife pass away recently?
I think so.
I don't tell people the truth about
where we are and what we're doing.
People are constantly
knocking on my door looking for me,
and I just don't want to be found, so
I look like a suspect,
but I am a good person.
Raised all of my kids, I've done
everything I'm supposed to do in life.
But everyone is
causing me trouble right now.
So JJ would be where?
He's with one of
my friends in Arizona.
Her name is Melanie Gibb.
- Okay, so he can call?
- Yeah.
Melanie doesn't answer.
Rexburg Police
can't get in contact with her.
They go back to Lori's home.
Uh, we're unable to
get a hold of your friend down
Melanie? Well,
they were going to Frozen 2 today,
so they may be at the movies.
Could you get a hold of her,
at some point?
Can you please call back the officer
that's been trying to call you?
Okay. Sure.
The next day, police get a
search warrant and go back to Lori's home.
But what they find
is that the whole house is empty.
She's gone. Alex is gone.
And the kids are nowhere to be found.
The police came
to our door and they said,
"Do you know where Tylee Ryan is?"
They asked if we knew
where her and JJ were,
and we didn't know.
I was really worried.
I call my mom.
I'm like, "Mom, two detectives just
came to my door looking for my siblings."
"What is going on?"
She's like, "I'm gonna take care of it.
Don't worry about it at all."
Like, "I'll deal with it.
It's not a big deal."
I called Tylee's number multiple times.
Tried to text it, bounced back.
I call my mom the next day,
and her phone's dead.
And she sent an e-mail
that said something like,
"I love you, just know
that we're safe, we're okay."
The Rexburg Police Department
in Idaho sent out a news release,
saying that there were two missing kids,
and they were worried about their safety.
This case quickly became a national story.
The search is growing more desperate
tonight for two missing kids from Idaho.
seven-year-old JJ Vallow
and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan.
The media was playing
catch-up to this crazy story
that was unfolding months prior.
If you have any information
about these missing children
JJ Vallow's grandparents
are offering a $20,000 reward.
He always says, "Papa."
If I could just have that back one time.
Please, God,
give it to me one time.
It felt like a movie.
The media started showing up at the door,
knocking, leaving cards.
Everyone contacting me on my
work phone and calling me and finding me.
One guy showed up
at the door and was like,
"I really want talk to you.
This is a really, really great story."
I was like, "This is not a story to me."
I was, like, trying to be nice,
but I was mad.
I felt helpless.
And I just tried so hard
to figure out, what do I do?
Mom, I just
I love the kids so much.
But I love you too, no matter what.
And everybody can hate on me
for saying that, but I really don't care.
I love you because you're my mom.
I'm putting up videos
for my mom and my family,
praying somehow Tylee saw it and then
she would know that I'm looking for her.
I want you to end it.
Just show them on FaceTime to the police
Everyone was saying
something about me specifically.
Some of the comments being, like,
I was somehow involved, or I'm sketchy,
that I know how to lie perfectly,
or I'm doing this for the police.
Like, I'm talking about craziest stuff
you've ever heard someone say about you.
I've been thinking about you every day,
every single day. That's not just
Everyone had a theory about it.
And I'm like, "I promise you,
from the bottom of my heart"
Like, this was my
desperate attempt for my family.
I'm praying that we
make it through this as a family.
I'm always here for you.
I always want you both to know that.
And I love you so much.
As the search continues,
questions remain about the death
of Chad Daybell's late wife, Tammy.
The 49-year-old's body was
exhumed from her grave
in Springville, Utah.
Fremont County ends up
exhuming her body on December 11th.
I thought that if he had done anything,
Alex would probably tell me.
Like, if they exhume this body,
are they gonna find anything?
So, I remember that they were saying
that she had become a zombie.
So, in the back of my mind,
here I am thinking
they said the same thing about Charles.
And I'm thinking, you guys are
not gonna do something, physically,
to people who are turning into zombies?
He sat back and pressed
his back towards the headboard.
And he goes, "No." That's it.
There's no answer after that.
So then I stand up
and I start walking away,
because I don't know
what to think at this point.
And that's when he said,
"I think I am being their fall guy."
And I'm like,
"The fall guy for what? Tell me."
"What is it that they're going
they're trying to pin on you?"
"What did What did they do?"
And he just wouldn't say anything else.
Right after Tammy is exhumed,
the day after,
Alex dies in Zulema's house.
Um, they told us the first night,
when we called the mortuary,
he had blood clots in his lungs.
He had thrombosis
blood clots in his lungs.
That does run in our family.
My grandparents
called me and told me.
I could hear the pain in their voices.
I didn't know that he'd moved to Rexburg.
I didn't know he was married.
All that was just like, boom, boom, boom.
And I remember sitting there
something felt wrong.
It's like, that's a lot of deaths.
That same night, we come home,
and there's an article printed
about my mom running away
from Idaho with her new husband.
And I'm like, "What are you doing?
You're married?"
Like, that was my thing.
Like, "You're married? Seriously?"
Summer saw it
on TV and she called me,
and she said, "Mom, Lori married Chad."
"She got married in
Hawaii all these months ago."
And I said, "Well, at least we
didn't have to get a present."
I don't I didn't know what to think.
I knew Tylee wouldn't like it.
I said, "Tylee is not gonna
want another stepfather."
That is just It was just not good news.

been seen since September,

They've been missing four months.

I mean, there's people around
the country praying for your children,

Next thing I know, they're on camera,
