The Gymkhana Files (2018) s01e02 Episode Script

The Motor City

1
- I go and start talking
to people, and they're like,
oh, what do you do?
I'm like, aw, you know,
I make these videos about cars,
they're called Gymkhana.
They don't know. No recognition.
This guy Ken Block,
rally racing, no recognition.
'Cause they're not in the
world, they don't live
Keep talking and then
eventually they're like,
wait, you guys shut down
that bridge in San Francisco.
- I mean, Five was rad.
You know, we shut
down the Bay Bridge.
- There were elements
like that in the video
that I was just really
stoked on because
- We jumped Russian Hill.
- We tried to make
this look kind of wild.
- That's like,
that's that weird thing
that just connects with people.
- Everyone has a favorite.
I mean, everyone's like,
I like Gymkhana Seven.
Gymkhana Two.
I like Gymkhana Five.
- I think the forever goal
is to beat Gymkhana Five.
- You know, it's like,
how are we gonna top this?
So that's why we're
like, five locations.
(dramatic music)
Five different vehicles.
Five completely different
concepts.
But the stakes are like
We go through all this work
and we make a whole show
following the process.
So it's like, hey, check it out,
here's all the skeletons in the
closet and how we make this.
So we're exposing
ourselves to that,
and then,
if the end result isn't
as good as we're
promoting it to be
that's embarrassing.
- The first time
I ever came here,
I was just driving cross-country
for a magazine article.
At the time, it was just
a cool place to shoot cars
'cause everything
was just abandoned
and there was no one
here to bother you.
But then we came back here
to scout Gym Three in 2010, Ken?
- [Ken] Something
like that, yeah.
- Yeah, and the city
told us, "No, thank you."
They really wanted us to
focus more on downtown Detroit
and not the Detroit ruins.
- There were blogs
of photographers
putting out photos
of the urban decay
and that's the
stuff I loved and
- [Scotto] And that's why
we wanted to come here.
- Yeah, and you know,
I think the story of
Detroit is so cool
that the automotive industry
and then times changing,
and to me,
you can't show this place
without the cool urban decay.
And they didn't wanna
show it at all, really.
- We're returning now,
six years later,
with the exact same concept
as we had last time.
Okay, Ken, so up ahead
on your right hand side
we'll be passing
a rather steep wall
I'd like you to drive over.
- You know when you're
driving down the highway
and you see concrete
at an angle,
and if you have a really
good imagination
or you're like a 12
year old, you're like,
man, I wish I could hit
that in a truck full speed,
like Dukes of Hazzard style.
- We can't push
things much further
without them getting into
the world of ridiculous stunts.
We don't do loop-de-loops,
we don't do barrel rolls.
That's just not who we are.
But at the same time,
I wanted to bring
something new to Detroit.
- [Ken] Oh boy, I don't even
think if I get the cars loose,
they will even stick.
- [Scotto] Looks
pretty far down, man.
- [Ken] Were we supposed to
stop?
- [Scotto] Well, we were
gonna go look at it
from the top and come back,
but we're already here,
- so we can
- Yeah.
- [Ken] I mean,
I have my hazards on.
- [Scotto] We're safe.
- So it's totally safe.
- Yeah.
- [Scotto] So for this trick,
I need Ken to transition
onto the wall.
Kind of drift around like an
alley-oop or vertical donut.
The art department needs
to build a transition
to get him up onto the wall.
They can either make
a ramp or a slight kicker.
We've used both in our films.
This is an example of a ramp.
This is a kicker.
Ramp, kicker,
ramp, kicker.
- So we are building two ramps
for a sequence we're
doing on the 75 Freeway.
Yeah, we've had like
48 hours to this point
to build two massive
ramps which have legs
and a lot of stuff going on.
- And Ken is very
skeptical of the trick.
It's a good angle
on a snowboard.
He doesn't know how
the car is gonna behave
or what he's gonna
get away with
- I'm just telling you,
it may not go well.
- I mean, it would be
pretty sick looking,
and it would give us
one really unique trick
here in Detroit.
- I think you should
have a backup.
- Yeah.
- When we showed up in
Detroit and it's day one,
it's a rain day.
It's never fun to start
a shoot with a rain day.
- For the past year, I've
been having a shoulder issue,
and I can't do a
pushup right now.
So I went in to get the MRI
and they put me in the machine,
and I got in and the edge of
where you can see is here,
and I freaked out and made
them take me back out of it.
And I don't have necessarily
a claustrophobic,
like if you put me in a
small space or whatever,
I'm like, I'm in a small space.
But as long as I
can move my arms
and if there's an
escape route, great.
But, one of my
biggest nightmares
is if you rolled
me up in a carpet,
and this was literally
that in a medical form.
(laughs)
So I tried four times
to get in there
and I got in there one
time for six minutes,
and they got one scan done.
I tell myself in my mind,
just get in there
and just do it.
But the physical revulsion
of being in that situation
kept me from staying in it.
I couldn't, I tried
four different times.
They even made me fast the
night before so I hadn't eaten,
so I felt kind of queasy.
I'm like, okay,
I'll try and eat.
Went and ate, I felt better.
I'm like, okay,
I think I can do this.
And I got back in there,
and as I was going back in,
my shoulder really
rubbed against the side
of the MRI machine,
and I'm like, ahhh!
Yeah, I felt like I failed.
- [Melissa] Copy check.
- [Jeremy] Copy, we are
starting to pull out
if you're ready ready.
- [Ken] Yeah, we're on
the move, guys, yep.
- [Pierre] I was going to
suggest go get umbrellas
so we can walk outside.
- [Jeremy] Yeah, Nate
was talking about
- [Pierre] Is that an option?
- [Jeremy] Yeah.
So, Nate, John, if we
could stop on the way,
that would be great.
- [Nate] Uh, okay.
- [Jeremy] If not, we can talk
about our first piece
of business underneath
for the launch
while someone goes
to get umbrellas.
- [Nate] Yeah, we do have
cover set under the bridge.
- [Jeremy] Let's start
under the bridge.
- [Nate] Copy, copy.
- Thank you.
- Thanks, Jeremy.
- [Jeremy] You got it.
- This hasn't been
confirmed by Jeremy yet,
but the city's making us stop
shooting every day at 3 p.m.
So our days are
We only have two days
and they're really short.
- Compress it down.
- Wait until you see
Wait until you see the shit
we've got in store for this car.
Derek's gonna just be like,
oh, you're joking, mate.
Ken was like, well,
if we total the car,
I guess we total the car.
- [Jeremy] For the fist
one, is that not passing?
- [Scotto]
No, the fist is mellow.
- [Jeremy] Oh the ramp?
- [Scotto] The ramp.
- [Jeremy] It's steep as shit!
- [Scotto] It's so fucking
steep.
- [Jeremy]
There's no transition.
- (laughter)
- [Diego] Any news
on those umbrellas?
- [Scotto] All right so you
guys wanna get in the cars
and we'll do, everyone's like,
yeah I'll get in the car.
(laughter)
So again, this is our
start position right here,
once he launches, go forward.
By the time he hits
the corner he'll
probably be almost sixth gear.
So this full circle here.
The cruising radius tightens,
tightens, tightens.
- [Jeremy] I think
I'm gonna hop the curb.
- Yep. Then inside here.
We're going off-roading
right here, over the curb.
There'll be a little ramp set
up,
slide over this.
Similar to Buffalo.
Thanks I appreciate that,
Jeremy.
You know,
it rained the first day
and it's like,
ah, like come on,
you know, we gotta spend
money and that's never fun.
I want to spend that money
on doing cool stuff,
on building a ramp,
or doing this,
or getting this crazy location,
what I don't wanna spend it on
is us sitting in a hotel,
waiting the rain out.
I mean one of the things
that's happening here,
which has never
happened anywhere else
we've ever filmed,
is they're not
closing down the other lane
of traffic anywhere we go.
- [Gil] Oh wow.
- [Ken] What do you mean?
- It's usually
- [Gil] How do you do that?
- Usually they do it
because of car accidents.
- [Ken] For safety.
- Because people are like,
what's that guy doing?
Boom, right into the
back of another car.
- Wait, so on Michigan Avenue
- No, no, Michigan Avenue
will be fully closed,
but the highway, the freeways,
anything that's got like
a jersey barrier in the middle.
- So wait when we
do the wall ride?
- There will be cars
on the other side.
- People are going
to crash and die.
- On the other side
- People are going, there's
gonna be a jackknifed truck.
Detroit is, it's
a nice place to visit.
- We were waiting on
approval for the permit,
based on preliminary,
pre-scout information.
- [Other man] Uh, Nathan
is working furiously
on it as we speak.
- Obviously after the scout
we've added a couple of requests
which I probably won't add.
Yes.
And then we'll ask
forgiveness later.
- [Other man] Yeah sorry for
the delay, I don't wanna
- We have to go
back with the DPD
because they wouldn't
come out to our scout
because we didn't
have a permit.
- Okay, got
- [Man On Phone]
I'm gonna answer.
- [Woman On Phone]
Okay, I'm gonna actually
have to make you call
you back in a little bit,
our system just crashed.
- [Other man] Okay, would you
prefer that we cut a check
and just deliver it by hand?
- Yeah, that's not happening,
I can tell you that.
- Tomorrow's locations,
are they gonna dry out?
- If it stays windy
through the night.
- [Gil] It's just all
about making smoke.
- [Scotto]
Well, we were planning
- And like, better
grip and car control.
(laughs)
- [Gil] You got this.
- [Scotto] Overrated.
(engine idling)
(engine revving)
- There's one moment
over the next two days
that I'm very concerned about,
the highway moment.
But I saw Derek
last night, he's like,
oh yeah, the stunt guy
showed me photos, yeah, so.
We did this one,
on Gymkhana Four,
I think it's one of my
favorite shots of all time,
the entire crew was on lunch
and we just went to go
do a pick up of one shot
and it was all supposed
to be on-car rig work,
but the steady cam guy
was still standing there,
so he was like, well
I'm just gonna roll on it
and it's one of the
best shots we ever got
because Ken just came so
violently through this corner.
- And just comes like
booking in and just
- If you look at it,
the full rig is on the car.
Like it clearly wasn't
supposed to be in the film
but it was just this
moment that we caught.
Just giving Ken
that perfect playground
to be able to do
that is what helps,
so it's like,
not only it being dry,
but us staying on time,
keeping him in the car,
keeping him hot, keeping him
moving and all of that stuff.
- I'm Jeremy, I'm your
assistant director
for the next couple days.
So first of all welcome back
guys, thank you for being here.
(clapping)
First thing that we're
gonna do today will be
Ken launching from
the chains here,
shooting out of the tunnel
to a right turn
and shutting down,
so this will be our
primary shooting area here.
At least until mother
nature is a little kinder.
- Safety issues around the
vehicle, it's moving fast,
try not to get between
it and anything else.
Always be on your toes,
always be watching the car.
Never not watch the car.
If you're behind the car,
tires throw rocks,
get yourself
some safety goggles.
Lastly, this vehicle
runs on methanol.
Interesting thing about it
is you do not see the flames.
- But like a regular gas fire,
you obviously see it
and you know to do
something about it,
but a methanol fire is clear,
so that's all part of why
we're taking extra precautions
to try and minimize
my potential death.
- In the incident that
there is an issue,
Eli will be the first
responder to the vehicle
in full fire suit.
What Matthew?
- No social media.
- Oh yeah, thanks.
That's how we always end it,
but I'm happy you jumped ahead.
I'm happy you mentioned that,
'cause I was gonna say that.
No social media, Bmoore, just
'cause it's not of the car,
don't let people know
you're in Detroit.
- (laughter)
- Bmoore.
- You know we're all motorheads
that shoot this stuff,
so it's like an adrenaline pump
being made,
and we know, holy crap,
we got that.
Especially when Ken
gets close to us,
and you know there's
a sense of comfort there.
You know, I trust him,
he trusts me.
- Obviously we want to keep
this as safe as possible,
we've done this
for ten years without
any sort of major issue,
let's keep it that way.
- [Man] We'll get Mr. Block
here warmed up, he's awake.
- Good morning.
- Good morning.
- And we'll have some fun.
- [Scotto] Just don't
look at him in the eyes.
(laughter)
- Thank you guys, thank you.
It's actually gotten worse.
Like this was completely dry
when I came here this morning.
It's all damp in here.
- We can't even finish
this shot.
- Right.
- Because the minute
he leaves here, it's wet.
So we're doing
this just to do it,
because we got
everybody here, but.
We're just watching
money just
(laughter)
- [Jeremy] Guys, let's clear,
we're gonna try to dry
this area out please.
And Richard,
just watch yourself,
our little drying machine's
gonna come through here.
- It's fine, it'll look fine,
it'll look fine.
- [Ken] Everything's fine.
- Everything's fine.
The rain's fine, it's all fine.
The fact that this is the
only place we can shoot today,
we're shooting all
of Gym Ten right here.
We're gonna build a donut box,
and then a figure eight,
and we're just gonna keep
moving it, you'll never know.
Yeah, it's Gym Ten, the tunnel.
- [Narrator] Gymkhana Ten,
the tunnel.
- So we'll have
them do a walk-up,
and it's gonna be like an over
the chain, walk like that.
Action.
- The weather hasn't
been nice to us today.
But it's changing.
It was raining this morning,
it was drizzling an hour ago,
and now it's stopped.
We're hoping for some wind,
so that it will help dry
the street.
Without the dry street,
this car can't go.
- We can't afford
for it to lose control.
- [Man] Reset.
Wet streets also mean
no smoke, no smoke
means no fun.
- Visor down.
Can we do a profile,
helmet shot?
Like a perfect box
window like this?
- And then you can
drive the car.
- Yay!
(chuckles)
(engine starts)
- [Jeremy]
Everybody's set, standing by?
- [Man On Walkie Talkie]
All operators are standing by.
- [Jeremy] Copy that,
we're gonna hook up
our effect.
We're gonna roll GoPros here,
so everybody stand by
for picture please.
- [Scotto] In case
you were wondering Ken,
this does look
really fucking sick.
- [Ken] Oh, I can imagine,
it looks great from here.
- So Ken, I'm gonna release you,
if for any reason
the release doesn't work,
I'll call just call
"stop, stop, stop," okay?
- [Ken] Copy. How far
do you want me to drive?
- At least exit the tunnel,
so you clear
the camera up there.
- [Ken] Copy.
- [Scotto] Everyone ready? Over.
- Good.
- [Jeremy] All right,
here we go guys,
picture's up.
- Exciting. We're actually
getting to do something.
- [Jeremy]
Rolling cameras please.
- Three, two, one,
action, action.
- [Ken] When we first
built the Hoonicorn,
we really built one of the
most unique all-wheel drive
vehicles in the entire world.
- I did in fact sit
in it, as Ken drove it.
Boy, does it feel fast.
(loud revving)
- When we built
that car for Gym Seven,
it just had 800 horsepower,
it was really good.
- The Hoonicorn was
already stupid fast.
But then we decided
to add 600 horsepower,
twin turbos, and methanol.
There's plenty of really
high horsepower cars
around the world,
but there aren't' a lot of
1400 horsepower cars that get
driven on an everyday road.
- It's crazy man, it is,
I've been in the passenger seat
you know,
on medium hot,
shaking it down,
and it's frightening.
It's the fastest car
I've ever been in.
It's a drag car.
And he does corners in it.
- I'm fighting
its effort to kill me.
(laughs)
(clicks)
- [Scotto] It looks so trippy.
- What? What?
- Look at that.
Hell yeah, that's rad.
- So guys we are officially
moving on to our next section.
The Segway trick has become
synonymous with Gymkhana.
- No one had ever said,
let's showcase
and show an all-wheel
drive donut.
So the idea of doing it
around a moving object
was what I came up with.
Shit.
That was actually revolutionary
in the motorsport world.
Something totally original.
- Something about it,
like it's gimmicky,
it's funny.
- Around another human
that could technically die
if I hit them, really badly.
- But then at the same time,
you kinda wanna watch
the guy on the Segway
get wrecked by a car.
- [Derek] Stand by for
a hot lock please, hot lock.
Matty.
(shutter clicks)
- Wow.
This is
(laughs)
- All right, here we go.
All right, ready, ready guys.
The car's on the move
in three, two, one.
Action, action!
(revving loudly)
(tires squealing)
- Okay, so the first take
is really good.
I don't really think
you'll get much closer.
And it's clean lines,
and the drone take
looks really good.
I'm just reviewing
all the shots,
but I just don't know
if we need to do this again.
- Well, as much
as I love to do it,
if we can move on
and we have a good take
and it's a clean run,
I'd say let's just move on.
- I mean you startled me
because I didn't think
you'd be that close on
the second wrap-around.
I was like, oh he's
going right in,
right from the start,
okay great no warm-up.
And I just love how it looks
with just no marks on the street
and you're really close
and I think my work
is just spectacular
as usual on this.
(laughs)
- [Ken] Uh, yes, so yeah.
- [Derek] Hey, Brian Scotto?
- [Scotto] Go for Scotto.
- [Derek] Hey you guys
still discussing,
or what are you thinking?
- [Scotto] I think
we're gonna move on.
- [Derek] Awesome.
- [Jeremy] Start getting ready
for that wall back transition.
- You know, inherently,
sliding a car around is
not evil.
But, kids doing things
on the street,
like street drifting and so on,
ends up putting such
a bad connotation on
everything with the
rest of motorsport.
- I'm gonna put you over where
that Enterprise truck is.
- And it got tagged
the word "hoon,"
which is this negative
word in Australia,
it's like, you don't
wanna be called a hoon.
And we took it and sort of
flipped it, and it was like,
there's nothing wrong with
doing that type of stuff,
it's just doing
it on safe areas,
so if you're out on a
race track sliding around,
that's not a bad thing.
- Or maybe even,
below the hydrants?
If you dropped the camera there,
like in that little
suicide spot kind of?
- I grew up in New York City,
in the early '90s,
half my friends are in jail,
the other half are dead,
and I got out of it
because I got into cars
and had something fun to go do.
- [Jeremy] The car's on
the move in, three, two, one,
action, action.
Left rear wheel
looks like toast.
- [Derek] Can you see if
that rim is damaged, Brian?
- [Scotto]
Yeah the rim's blown,
we're gonna need a new wheel,
new tire, back left.
- If you were like
three inches earlier,
you would've been fine.
- [Scotto] Okay keep it
locked guys, we're still on.
- It looks like just the wheel.
Then we'll be back in.
- The weird thing is about
this is like, it's not,
it's such a wide open thing,
there isn't a lot of landmarks,
and everything's low
and looks the same.
So I don't have
anything to like,
oh there's where I should
lock up, you know?
- [Derek] All right.
Guys, let's all clear.
- [Jeremy] We're gonna
fire and go to one,
picture's up please.
- Suicide cam GoPro.
Good luck.
That looks like a good spot,
right about there.
Over there.
(tires squealing in distance)
- [Derek] All right,
keep it locked please guys.
We're going again guys,
right away please.
- [Scotto] Three, two, one,
action, action.
Fuck.
That's his other wheel down,
other wheel down.
- [Matthew] Same spot Derek,
got a different pair of
- [Jeremy] We're gonna need
another back left wheel.
Back left wheel.
- Watch yourself guys,
watch your back please.
- If you don't take risks
the videos don't look good,
so we're looking for
some risks from him,
so we try to push a bit more.
- I didn't get the oversteer
as quick as I wanted so,
dumb little mistake, but
it just sucks that like,
this simple thing
that's totally wide open
just cost us two rear wheels.
(sighs)
That was just a stupid mistake.
Silly.
Anyway, sorry for
costing some time.
I didn't think it was
gonna be this hard,
I just need to be tighter.
- [Matthew] You think
that's supposed to be there?
That'd be a cool shot.
- Yeah.
- Yeah, it is here, maybe it is.
- I'd leave it.
- Yeah let me check with Jeremy.
Jeremy, copy?
- [Jeremy] What's up Matty?
- There's a Hero Four GoPro
sitting in the middle
of the road here,
facing directly to the sky,
is it supposed to be here?
- [Jeremy] Go ahead and
put that on the sidewalk
to your left, right
behind that other GoPro.
- Yeah, did it fall off the car?
- [Jeremy] No, he
had it like suicide,
so he was trying to
get the car to hit it,
which it looks like
was successful.
- I don't know, it didn't,
I mean we wrecked,
how many did we
wreck on Gym Five?
- Forty.
- No, fourteen.
- Altogether.
- Yeah, on Gym Four
we wrecked fucking 23.
- [Jeremy] Holy shit.
- Yeah you guys got some
catching up to do, mate.
- Is it right there?
- Where'd it come from?
- Right here.
- We set a bar
so high ten years ago
and we've just been
chasing that bar.
We've risen the bar
and we've lowered it
and we've done different things,
but a franchise is like
the most difficult thing
in the world to do because
it's easy to do two movies.
You know, how do you do ten?
Hopefully we get a really
good first trick out
in the morning
and it's really solid.
Because I think yesterday
we had that with Segway.
We were super stoked,
I think that that came off
way better than we
thought it was going to
and then he ends up hitting
a curb on the simplest thing.
That wasn't even really
a major moment,
he was just transitioning.
- Yeah, I mean
(sighs)
I mean this sucks.
- And then it happened again.
That has never happened before.
And I think for him that
started to get into his head.
- This is not a great way to
start off a five-segment shoot.
- It's just like
anything you do,
you don't want your star
athlete to be sitting there,
thinking, oh I fucked up
and now I don't
wanna do that again.
- [Matthew] We're looking
for that picture so,
you know, we need to be
a bit radical with the lines,
but the car,
it's raining a bit,
there's bit of
pollution on the roads,
there's a bit of
oil on the roads,
so we don't get a chance
to practice on it.
So Ken has to go in hot.
- I mean to really even try
a reverse entry wide,
it would really high
to commitment,
but might look really rad too,
because it would be
a different version of that.
We could try that first
and see how that works out.
- [Scotto] The two things that
I like that you said there
was "high commitment"
and "really rad."
So that's what
I'm looking for here.
- I mean it's just
so big and so wide,
I don't know what
the car's gonna do.
I just don't know, especially
with now water on the ground.
So, I suppose we
could just try it.
- Do you wanna get
into it and then if
we feel like we need
to visually change it up,
- we go for it?
- Okay.
- [Jeremy] And then, gentlemen,
can I get you inside of your
rig?
Thank you.
- [Scotto] All right,
let's get Ken in the car
and let's do this.
- Fire department, ready, ready?
- [Fireman]
Fire's ready, ready.
- The car's coming
around the block guys.
- [Scotto] You guys standing
by for tire warm-up?
It looks so violent.
It also looks
really unpredictable.
- [Derek] Can I tell
you when they're ready?
- You ready to go?
- Yeah.
- [Scotto] Okay,
here we go guys,
three, two, one,
action, action.
- [Man]
Okay. Car is resetting.
- [Scotto]
That was unexpected.
Was that super slippery?
- [Ken]
Yeah, very slippery.
- What are you thinking, Ken?
- [Ken] Uh, I think let
me try another run or two
and see what I can get.
Well, that was backwards.
That made a little bit of smoke.
- [Scotto] We gotta
wait for smoke to clear,
but you actually made
a W in the street,
that's how backwards you are.
You actually came
to a complete stop
and then burned out forward.
- That's a good thing right?
- Yes, that's a good thing.
The last shot is what
we're looking for,
we just gotta
tighten that up now.
- Did you see that?
He was like this with his hand
out the window of the drone.
- Hey, Brian? You pointing
at the drone was amazing.
- [Ken] I was hoping
the drone was looking at me.
That looked really good.
I'm pretty stoked about that.
- Ready?
- [Ken] I had
some sort of misfire.
- Cut. Jay, we got
a misfire on the engine.
- Got it.
So we're going cold for a sec?
- [Scotto] So we're not
ready at the fist yet,
so you and I are going to
go to the highway right now
and just put eyes on that
and see if we wanna change it.
- [Ken] We're gonna go
to the highway while they
work on the car?
- [Scotto] Yeah, let's go.
- There's a concrete
embankment on the 75 freeway.
And it's at a 25-degree angle.
So if he drives a car into it,
you know the car's
so low to the ground,
he's gonna bottom it
out and wreck the car,
so we have to build
a transition ramp
so he can get off the freeway
and go on to the embankment
without ruining his car.
The thing is pretty huge,
it's like 40 feet wide
and it's about 35 feet long.
- And it's a pretty
aggressive angle,
but we save it for
last, we're like,
if we bend the car
in half, whatever,
we have a segment in the can.
This was gonna be like a bonus
that really made Detroit pop.
Hey, it's Scotto.
We're five minutes out.
- You guys are on the highway.
Are you questioning in your head
how all this works right now?
No, not at all.
This makes total sense.
So we're gonna put the
lounge chairs there.
I really love this patio.
Did we file a permit
for this deck extension?
It's horrible.
There's some major
miscommunication between
me, TJ, and Matthew, where,
it's just not even usable.
- Me and Matt designed the ramp
and then we didn't have any
experienced ramp builders,
construction guys
there, like in LA,
I have my guys that
come in and do it,
we draw it out, we give
them the schematics.
- In certain situations,
that way of thinking
is the right way
to do it, you know,
it's like Hollywood,
it's big, it's like,
you know.
- But see, when we're
working with films
and stuff like that, the
guys are very precise.
- Everything's
super over-thought.
- Camera angle.
- This is a little
bit different.
- They're a lot
of handheld stuff.
- A little bit more loose.
- They almost have their own
language of communication,
when they're setting up things,
and I just have to watch that.
- In the least
possible Hollywood way.
- 'Cause he's gonna
stay along the bottom,
and then slide in like this,
so this puts him too
high up on the ramp.
- Yeah, I think it
was just tricky,
just a different
way of thinking.
- Who knows, I might
get fired tomorrow.
- [Scotto Voiceover]
Like this is just
the complete wrong direction,
it's not even like, oh, let's
shift it down a little bit,
which is what we went
over there to look at,
was if there was
a last minute change,
but this isn't
a last minute change,
this is like a entire re-design.
That's a monstrosity, it's huge.
It's not at all what
we were looking for.
I can't see how they're gonna
to have this fixed in time.
Or before we get weather.
Yeah.
- [Derek]
Derek to Jeremy?
- Go ahead, Derek.
- [Derek]
We're two minutes out
from being good to go.
- Copy that.
- [Matthew] We are good
to go, we are good to go,
so when you're ready,
we're ready, copy.
- Less than a mile and a half
from having precipitation.
And it's been like that
for three hours now.
And hopefully it stays that way.
- For us, the shutting
down of cities
and having unique cities
and having unique access
like this has just
become expected.
Like, most people
think Gymkhana Five,
how did you shut
down the bridge?
That was never even in
our mind at all, whatsoever,
that we could shut
down the Bay Bridge.
The city offered it to us.
We were like,
fuck yeah we wanna do that!
Like, why would we
not wanna do that?
So that's when we scripted
out the entire opening scene,
and how I walk up to
the car and everything.
- [Jeremy] Picture's up.
- So when we talked
about the mix of things
that we wanna do
for Gymkhana Ten,
we knew that access had to
be in there at some point,
to represent kind of that
history of what we've done.
The coolest part of downtown
Detroit is the Joe Lewis fist.
It's in one of the
busiest parts of town,
it's a major road,
and it's a very
cool intersection.
It makes actually for
a perfect driving situation.
- Here we go guys.
- [BMoore] Camera's ready ready.
- [In unison] And three,
two, one, action, action.
- That looked really good.
- [Ken] Glad to hear that,
should I go back to P One?
- Return to P One while
we review real quick.
Hey Magic, did you get
that lock-up moment?
It looked like it
happened up top.
You wanna review it real quick,
tell me how it looks,
see if we get all
four wheel lockup?
- [Magic] Gimme just a moment.
Yeah, looks good,
I definitely got it.
- We got it, it looks dope,
I just wish the shot
just a little bit wider.
So, we're gonna go for it again,
but otherwise I would just
keep everything the same.
- [Ken] Copy that, well I'm
ready as soon as you're ready.
- Here we go guys.
- All right Ken,
that looked great,
we're gonna move on.
So, take the helmet off,
have a refreshing drink.
Enjoy yourself. Good job.
- [Ken] Thanks.
- And they're
finishing up the ramp,
and it's like 2:30
in the afternoon,
it starts to rain.
So we hop in one
of the rental cars,
drive onto the freeway,
get out,
we're inspecting it,
looking at it,
like in a drizzle.
We have this much daylight left,
if it dries out,
we can still go for it.
- [Scotto] It's pouring,
so we're just gonna hang out
and wait for a minute.
- It just keeps raining,
and raining, and raining.
- [Scotto] But like,
even when the rain stops,
we have to wait for it to dry.
So we're easily
30, 40 minutes out
from being able to do anything.
- It's a wood ramp,
it's soaked through.
The concrete to get
up to it, it's soaked.
You know, it's a
1400 horsepower car,
on tires that are made to slide.
We just didn't get it.
- Ahhh!
- This was also the beginning
of Ken's frustrations
and Brian's frustrations
and a little bit of
tension between the two.
- [Scotto] The
issue is that this
- No, we got a good amount
of stuff here in Detroit.
I think we have what we need.
That would have
been a nice bonus.
But it is what it is.
- We always knew it was
something that was risky.
- We are gonna move on.
All right, I'm leaving
in six minutes.
- All right, see ya.
