Tonight, everything changes.
Five candidates will attempt to win over their dream employer, but it won't be easy.
If you really wanted this job, why would you come in dressed like that? You have your mom as a reference.
I noticed that you're conversational in Spanish.
Uh, quiero es traba trabajar.
If a candidate makes a good impression, they'll find themselves in a once-in-a-lifetime dilemma, because waiting in the wings are three other highly desirable companies who want to pounce And snatch up a candidate with a job offer of their own.
There's no way you're gonna get this job.
I'm officially offering you a position.
For the first time, The Job candidate can choose The Job they want.
I'm gonna personally take you under my wing.

Good evening, everyone, I am Lisa ling, and welcome to The Job.
All over the country, getting a great job has never been harder, and nowhere is that truer than here in New York City, the global business capital for finance, fashion, and media.
But tonight, we are going to be part of the solution.
In this city, where more than 350 magazines are published, five highly qualified candidates from all kinds of backgrounds, from all across the country, will interview for their dream job at Cosmopolitan, the best-selling monthly magazine in America and the biggest women's magazine in the world.
Please welcome, from Cosmopolitan, executive editor Joyce Chang Senior editor Jessica knoll And in the middle, a giant in the magazine business, editor-in-chief joanna coles.

Lisa, my mission is to find the brightest and best women or men across America to work for America's best magazine.
Joyce, what qualities are you looking for in an editorial assistant at Cosmo? We're looking for a team player, and someone with great creative energy, and who has a great eye.

I am rachele trainor.
I'm from white hall, Maryland, and I grew up on a dairy goat farm there.
I kind of found my love for fashion when I was 11 or 12, and I went to school for it out in Denver, Colorado.
I landed an internship at Marie Claire magazine.
While working there for only a short period of time, my mom became ry ill, so I decided to go home and be with her.
Now that everything is okay, I've been looking for work, and to get to a magazine like Cosmo would really make me realize that this is why my road has led me to where I am.

Hi, everyone.
My name is Carlos bell, and I'm from Washington, D.
C.
, but I currently live in New York.
At a very early age, I'd always been interested in art, so when I found this discovery that fashion could be art, like, I needed to get an internship.
I had my first internship at gq magazine.
I didn't have enough money to move to New York, so I stayed in D.
C.
for two more weeks and commuted back and forth via bus.
From gq, I went to teen vogue and Elle.
Throughout my career, you know, I've done a lot of internships, and I think I strategically placed myself in a arena where I could take a editorial position, so, you know, I would just love to work for Cosmo.

Hi, I'm Brenda clevenger from Kansas City.
I've been an entrepreneur for 25 years.
I went to college to become a journalist.
My first job was at the Jones store, writing fashion copy about men's underwear.
I moved back to Kansas City and delved into fashion and started blogging for midlife women, and have poured my heart and soul into that, and this would be a phenomenal extension.
Next up, diandra barnwell from Albuquerque, new Mexico.
I'm diandra barnwell, and I'm from Albuquerque, new Mexico.
I just recently graduated from the fashion institute of design and merchandising.
I was fortunate enough, when I was younger, to grow up in Europe.
That experience really ignited my passion for fashion, art, and all things culture.
You don't have to come from a big city.
You don't have to come from a lot of money.
But if you're willing to sacrifice, take a risk, and stand up for who you are, dreams do come true, and today is the beginning of mine.
And finally, from Chicago, Illinois, Kristina leng.
Hi, everyone.
My name's Kristina leng.
I'm 26 years old, from Chicago, Illinois.
I'm an ex-division one college ice hockey player/ fashion design major.
Over the last few years, I have seriously struggled on finding my path in life.
Currently, I'm working as a bartender, server, promotional model, and stylist just to get by, and I'm just very thankful to be here, competing for this amazing position.
So these final five were selected from thousands of applicants, and tonight, they will compete for their dream job at Cosmopolitan.
Now, just like in the real world, there's competition for great talent, and it's time to reveal a secret that we've been keeping from our candidates.
We've invited three guest companies to The Job tonight to observe our candidates.
Later in the show, these three additional companies will have the chance to pounce on the candidate that they themselves would like to hire.

They're all from the fashion and media industries, and they're all looking for their next great employee.

Let's see what happened when we we sent them to work with Jessica and Joyce for one day at Cosmo.
Just a few months ago, I was sitting in school.
I was taking my finals, getting ready for graduation.
And now, I'm here in the Cosmo offices.
I need to be pinched, 'cause I feel like I'm dreaming.
Hi.
Welcome to Cosmo.
Today, your assignment is going to be something that a real editorial assistant here at the magazine would do.
What your assignment is, you're going to be hitting the streets for our "what's on your mind?" Page.
You can talk to as many people as you want and ask them what's on their mind.
You'll have professional photographers supplied to you.
So you'll come back, you'll pick your favorite picture, and then, you'll have some time to write copy and captions for that picture.
It's a cut-throat business, the magazine business.
Based on your work today, one of you will be eliminated.
Elimination is so nerve-wracking to me.
I had no idea that, you know, somebody would be eliminated after this assignment.
Like, hopefully, it's not me.
You know, I'm gonna try my best, so Good luck, and we can't wait to see what you bring us.

I need to do what I'm all about, and that is asking people questions, getting really great answers, and writing it.

Do they last longer? Pretty much like toys, yeah.

Joyce and I are about to hit the streets and see how the candidates are doing, and I'm excited to see what they're up to.
So how would you describe yourself? I think I look for things that I can change up over time, but that I think Oh, great.

Interestingly enough, I think she is art directing the shot.
I think the Cosmo editors are gonna like the uniqueness of having a lovely 25-year-old with gentlemen that didn't know her posing with her, and say, "hey, here's a girl that went the extra mile, and she's the one.
" She's bringing a guy into the story.
This is now creepy.
See, now, she has her professors lurking around, leering at her.

Um, this is not a Cosmo shoot.
You're looking good, Alison.
When Joyce and Jessica walked up, it excited me that they'd seen the poor taste and people that Brenda, you know, picked.
A little bit closer.

At the end of the day, this is a magazine.
You have to be able to edit the best choices, and I don't think that Brenda knows how to do that.
Okay, when we come back, our three guest companies, they are closely watching our candidates, waiting to jump on one of them and make a job offer of their own.

You know, I can talk for days, weeks, years, decades, but to put all that into 30, you know, words, it's impossible.
I really hope they like this.
Okay, joanna, I can't wait to hear how you and your team thought our candidates did.
Now, remember, one of our candidates will be eliminated based on how they handled this assignment.
Well, I think you all discovered it's not quite as easy as it looks, is it? No.
We put all your pictures into a layout.
- Now, diandra, darling,- Let's get the grammar right.
Let's get the spelling right.
You've got two words in your caption spelt wrong.
You have the word "aesthetics" wrong and you have the word "synchronization" wrong.
We are a magazine.
Spelling matters.
Jessica, what did you feel about Kristina's picture of the dancer? You know, I like that you posed her.
I like that you got her looking very confident.
In terms of the caption that you wrote, "chalk full of attitude," it should say "chock full of attitude.
" Not "chalk" like chalk on a you know, chalkboard.
Joyce, you actually watched Brenda sort of stage directing this or art directing it.
It was one of the best girls that we saw of the day, it was one of the best shots, and then, it went so wrong.
I had fallen off the Cosmo radar.
Um, I'm not a regular subscriber anymore, since I'm 50.
I understand that, but The Job is at Cosmo - Mm-hmm.
- So what I would have expected is for you to bother to go to the newsstand, sit down, and read that most recent issue cover to cover.
What about rachele's shot? The language is really off.
It's just very flowery - Mm-hmm.
- And that's just so not the tone of Cosmopolitan, and that is a huge part of The Job as an editor is, like, you've got to be able to pick up that tone.
Right, so that brings us to Carlos.
I liked the way you handled the people that you came across on the street, and I am thrilled, Carlos, because we are going to use this image in an upcoming issue of Cosmo.

I mean, people would just laugh at us and think we were fools.
Brenda, I thought you were very sympathetic to the people you stopped, even though I know you felt anxious about doing it, and I loved the way you referenced Helen gurley brown in your letter.
But for me, it's a deal-breaker that you didn't read the magazine before you came to do the assignment, and I feel that we can't offer you an office at Cosmo at this moment.

I'm very proud of being a young woman, and that often comes along with the territory of having fun.
You want to go out with your friends and your girlfriends, but at the same time, I do have family on Facebook.
I'm very conscious of who I am and who I represent.
And I feel that it's always important to maintain myself at a certain caliber.
And it's always the highest caliber possible.
So no, I don't think so.

As far as what I bring to this job, it's just me, and it's the versatility that comes along with me and my background.
Yes, I've worked in fashion.
I've had various positions, whether it was fashion production assistant or fashion stylist.
I'm a fashion writer on the side.
I've also done different production work, and I feel that my diversity and my versatility, not only in my background, but in my personal life, is what's gonna make me stand out and set me apart.
Okay, I like the way we heard you speak like that.
It felt to me like you dropped the prom queen facade, and suddenly, we got to this real passion and this sense of you.
Rachele.
When being different than diandra, um, I have been able to dabble in a couple of different areas of fashion, starting at Marie Claire.
And, um Do you remember me from when you were at Marie Claire? - Yes, I do.
And - I guess I'm trying to figure out why I don't remember you.
II kinda just put my head down and worked, and don't take this wrong you're intimidating.
So I guess I never thought to have the guts to walk in and be, like, "hi, joanna, I'm rachele, and, um" So let me ask you something.
You were offered the chance of a full-time position at Marie Claire.
You were two weeks off graduating, and you didn't talk to anybody about how that could work for you? Yes, timing was bad then because I was just getting into my career at that point.
My mother became ill with a brain tumor and something going on with her heart.
So it wasn't just the flu, where it was, like, "I have to run home.
" It was a little more serious than that.
Well, well done for making a decision that put your family first.
I think a lot of young women wouldn't have had the strength of character to do that, and it feels like you made the right decision for you.

Uh, relies on someone living in New York.
Are you both prepared to leave the life that you obviously have behind, and start afresh, alone, in New York City? I'll be honest with you, joanna.
This would be, absolutely, the biggest risk that I've taken thus far.

While working there for only a short period of time, my mom became ry ill, so I decided to go home and be with her.
Now that everything is okay, I've been looking for work, and to get to a magazine like Cosmo would really make me realize that this is why my road has led me to where I am.

So you'll come back, you'll pick your favorite picture, and then, you'll have some time to write copy and captions for that picture.
It's a cut-throat business, the magazine business.
Based on your work today, one of you will be eliminated.
Elimination is so nerve-wracking to me.
I had no idea that, you know, somebody would be eliminated after this assignment.

Joanna, do you have any idea what you would have done if you had a guaranteed job offer on the table at 22 years old? I'm a firm believer that you have to really ask yourself the hard questions and go for what you actually want, and if you don't get it, then to find something else.
But archetypeme is a guaranteed offer, and I'm not in the position to do that yet.
And you're up against two really good candidates.
So, diandra, are you going to accept The Job at archetypeme or hold out for the possible job at Cosmo? In the end, I'm so thankful to get any recognition from archetypeme, but my loyalty lies with Cosmopolitan.

Now, anyone who's ever been through a highly competitive job interview process knows that, ultimately, you have to face some very difficult questions.
This is the final interview.
Take it away with our first question.
So, diandra, let's start with you.
If I go to your Facebook page, will I find anything that might make me question hiring you? Actually, joanna, no.
I'm very proud of being a young woman, and that often comes along with the territory of having fun.
You want to go out with your friends and your girlfriends, but at the same time, I do have family on Facebook.
I'm very conscious of who I am and who I represent.
And I feel that it's always important to maintain myself at a certain caliber.
And it's always the highest caliber possible.
So no, I don't think so.
So no topless photos? Absolutely not.
Rachele, what about you? I actually am one in a million.
I don't have Facebook and I don't have Twitter.
Are you up to speed on social media then? That makes you sound a bit of a dinosaur.
No.
I am up to date.
I, uh, do pinterest and other social media.
I just don't do Facebook.

My question is a tough question.
What do you bring to this job that the person standing next to you can't? I'll start with you, diandra.
As far as what I bring to this job, it's just me, and it's the versatility that comes along with me and my background.
Yes, I've worked in fashion.
I've had various positions, whether it was fashion production assistant or fashion stylist.
I'm a fashion writer on the side.
I've also done different production work, and I feel that my diversity and my versatility, not only in my background, but in my personal life, is what's gonna make me stand out and set me apart.
Okay, I like the way we heard you speak like that.
It felt to me like you dropped the prom queen facade, and suddenly, we got to this real passion and this sense of you.
Rachele.
When being different than diandra, um, I have been able to dabble in a couple of different areas of fashion, starting at Marie Claire.
And, um Do you remember me from when you were at Marie Claire? - Yes, I do.
And - I guess I'm trying to figure out why I don't remember you.
II kinda just put my head down and worked, and don't take this wrong you're intimidating.
So I guess I never thought to have the guts to walk in and be, like, "hi, joanna, I'm rachele, and, um" So let me ask you something.
You were offered the chance of a full-time position at Marie Claire.
You were two weeks off graduating, and you didn't talk to anybody about how that could work for you? Yes, timing was bad then because I was just getting into my career at that point.
My mother became ill with a brain tumor and something going on with her heart.
So it wasn't just the flu, where it was, like, "I have to run home.
" It was a little more serious than that.
Well, well done for making a decision that put your family first.
I think a lot of young women wouldn't have had the strength of character to do that, and it feels like you made the right decision for you.

This job this opportunity Yes.
Uh, relies on someone living in New York.
Are you both prepared to leave the life that you obviously have behind, and start afresh, alone, in New York City? I'll be honest with you, joanna.
This would be, absolutely, the biggest risk that I've taken thus far.
It's not the biggest risk.
You just turned down a job.
Second-biggest risk.
Excuse me.
You're right.
Lapse of judgment.
But there's a quote, I think it's neale Donald walsch, that said, "life begins at the end of your comfort zone," and that is what I'm doing today.

When I got out of college, I moved to New York, so I have lived here.
I will be here in a second.
When you live in New York, it gets in your blood, and you can't leave.
You have to come back.
I want to be here.
Lisa, I find this an incredibly difficult decision.
I think we have two exceptional young women who've had to make all sorts of decisions earlier in their life than perhaps most people do.
And I actually feel quite humble to have met you both.
And this is a tricky very tricky decision.

Rachele, you took a huge risk going back to finish your college degree and then having to leave the workplace to go and look after an ill parent.
So what does it come down to? Oh, God, hold my hand.
