The Republic of Sarah
You know there are a dozen more
of those mining company cidiots
showing up every day?
- Danny?
What are you doing here?
You work for Lydon Industries?
Your brother?
A sizable deposit of coltan
has been discovered
right here in Greylock.
Josh, hi, sweetie.
Goodbye, Danny.
Corinne, wait.
- I did. Longer than I should have.
I'm not gonna do that again.
This morning, Governor Taggert
signed eminent domain paperwork
which gives Greylock's
public space
to the state
of New Hampshire.
You're gonna wipe Greylock
off the map.
I know how we can stop
the drilling.
What if it didn't belong
to New Hampshire?
Are you insane?
- No, AJ.
Greylock was never
legally claimed by anyone.
The way to save our town
is to turn it into a country.
Sarah Cooper, we're
placing you under arrest.
What are you doing here?
Four hours
from Greylock to Concord
and that's the welcome I get?
I told you I didn't want
anybody seeing me like this.
Oh, save it, Shawshank.
I'm not going anywhere.
There's no way
I'm gonna let my best friend
it in federal prison
by herself.
How you doing?
Let's see. I've been
arrested for a crime
which carries
a 20-year sentence,
the prosecutor on my trial
has never lost a case
and the judge set my bail
at a million dollars.
So, you know, peachy.
Hey, it could be worse.
How on Earth could it be worse?
The judge could have set your
bail at two million dollars.
I'm so screwed.
This is a disaster, Grover.
I think you're in good shape.
Okay.
Fair enough.
Your card is the real disaster.
Sarah Cooper,
you just cleared bail.
Head to Discharge
for immediate release.
Bae, don't look at me.
I don't have a million bucks
lying around.
So who does?
It was nothing.
Just a little
creative accounting
with my retirement funds.
And the house as collateral,
of course.
Thank you.
- You better not flee the country
before the trial,
or I'll be homeless.
I'm not fleeing
anything.
If the FBI was hoping
for a pushover,
they picked a fight
with the wrong girl.
If you're gonna fight,
you're gonna need a lawyer.
A good one.
You aren't seriously considering
letting your mother
be your lawyer.
My mother spent six years
as an A.D.A.
before she got into politics.
She's still a member
of the state bar.
She's a very capable woman.
When she's sober.
If she's sober.
A public defender would be in
way over her head
with something like this,
and there aren't exactly
a bunch of people putting
their hands up
to pay for a ritzy lawyer.
Okay, so we take out a loan,
or we hold a fundraiser
to pay for a lawyer.
You want to buy an attorney
with a bake sale?
This is serious, Sarah.
Which is exactly why I need
someone who will fight
tooth and nail,
do whatever it takes to win.
The kind of person
who would go on TV
and tell the whole world
about her three D.U.I.s
and difficult family history
just to protect me.
Less than
one month ago, Sarah Cooper
was just a high school
history teacher.
This morning, however,
she steps into
a federal courthouse to assume
a new title: defendant.
Well, when Lydon Industries
and the state of New Hampshire
conspired to flatten
a whole town, my daughter
stood up and stopped them.
That's not a criminal.
That's a hero.
Reactions to Cooper's story
run the gamut
from condemnation to support.
Cooper's lawyer
has presented evidence that
the town of Greylock was never
claimed by the United States.
Well, the fact is,
nations have to come
from somewhere.
What do people think--
God snapped his finger one day
and-and, poof,
the U.N. appeared?
You belong in prison!
Does anyone
really expect America
to just hand over a chunk
of its territory?
"We don't need this anymore,
it's all yours."
After two months at the center
of the news cycle,
the story
of the small New Hampshire town
that defied a nation
has finally come to an end.
The jury returned a verdict
of "not guilty"
for Sarah Cooper
on her sedition charge.
And, in a shocking move,
the judge then recommended
the American government
give up control of Greylock.
Ms. Cooper.
Ms. Cooper! Ms. Cooper,
do you feel vindicated
by the court's decision?
Turning Greylock
into a new country
was never the point
of all of this.
The point was to protect
our right to decide
how we want to live
our own lives.
Because as far
as we're concerned,
whether it's Greylock
or anywhere else
people should rule the palace
and not the other way around.
- Governor Taggert!
Governor Taggert.
Governor Taggert,
what do you think
about Ms. Cooper's acquittal?
I think Sarah's unwavering
commitment to her citizens
is something we
all can aspire to.
The coltan in Greylock
would've meant
a lot of money to New Hampshire.
From the moment I joined
Sarah's mother in
the state senate
in, what, 1998
and became governor
six years ago,
I've been fighting to protect
my constituents' rights.
I think we should applaud
Sarah for doing the same.
She's proven herself
to be a leader.

Nope. Try harder.
- Grover. Please.
No, I won't sell!
- Please?
Then Greylock will take
the land by eminent domain.
What?
If there was
any other way, you know
I would do it, but I have
to get the power back on.
And to do that,
I have to take your house.
Grover, talk to
Deal.
The third mine is yours.
I'll get started right away.
You okay?
- Nope.
I met Josh the other day.
I don't want to sound crazy,
but is there any chance that
No. No.
He's not your son.
He's exactly
the right age, Sarah.
Count backwards from how old
he is today, add nine months,
and you land right before
Corinne and I broke up.
You and Corinne didn't
break up. You abandoned her.
It's just, talking to him,
I had this feeling that we're
He's not your son.
Right. Of course.
Yeah.
Sorry I asked.
When you didn't
answer your phone,
I figured you might be here.
Bailey Pond is where
Patience and I
had our first kiss.
Sophomore year,
after the Fall Ball.
I remember that night.
Yeah, she and I came back here
every year for our anniversary.
And when I finished the house,
I used a branch
from the tree
right over there
to make the welcome sign
outside the front door.
Our front door.
I know you're angry.
You have every
right to be.
Tell me what I can do
to make you feel better,
and I'll do it.
Anything.
I get it, Sarah-- you're doing
what's best for Greylock.
I get it.
Just because I understand
your decision
doesn't mean I have to like it.
Ovarian cancer
took Patience from me
one year, ten months,
three weeks and six days ago.
The house is the only thing
I have left of her.
It's more than a house.
It's
it's a history.
And now that's getting
taken away from me, too.
You want to make me feel better?
Leave me alone.
I can't
I can't do that, Grover.
I want to
I want to help.
I want to be as good a friend to
you as you've always been to me.
Okay, you are
a good friend, Sarah.
And you're a good leader.
But you can't be both
at the same time.
Hey.
Power's on all over town.
Greylock is officially
back from the dead.
Wish I could say
the same about you.
I'm fine.
You sure?
Because after a whole day
of lying in this bed,
I kind of hoped
you'd be done by now.
Done with what?
- Feeling sorry for yourself.
I have to bulldoze
Grover's house, AJ.
I'm sorry it's not all
rainbows and
sunshine in here.
You know you're the leader
of this town now.
Greylock is counting on you.
Maybe they should
count on someone else.
They don't want
someone else.
Look I didn't want to tell
you this during your trial,
because I know
how stressed you were.
But while you were away, William
tried to retake the town.
Like, with a tank?
No, with a petition.
He didn't even get close.
Because Greylock wanted you.
You're the one that
protected them from Lydon.
You're the one
that saved this town.
You're the superhero
they all needed.
So quit moping.
Put your cape back on.
Hi, everyone.
This is Sarah.
If you're seeing me right now,
then it's probably obvious
that the power's back on.
It wasn't easy.
Sadly, for us, electricity
doesn't grow on trees.
So I had to make
some hard decisions.
Greylock will work
with Lydon Industries to build
three coltan mines in town.
These mines
will pay for our power,
as well as
anything else we need.
They will put money
into our economy
and they will provide jobs
to local workers.
Lydon will be
on a very short leash
while they're here--
one wrong move,
and it will be bye-bye,
corporate scumbags.
In order to build these mines,
we have to demolish two homes.
I've already reached out
to the families,
and I can assure you I will do
my best to take care of them.
Everyone in Greylock
is important.
I'm not gonna let anybody
fall through the cracks,
especially those we ask
to make sacrifices.
Let me close by saying this.
I'm not perfect.
I'm never going to be.
But as long as I'm your leader,
I will work my ass off
to take care
of each and every one of you,
and I will do whatever it takes
to make it right when I fail.
I promise.
Thank you.
What is this?
I'm still grounded.
I can't go anywhere.
- We brought this
because we thought, since
you can't go to Montreal,
we'd bring Montreal
to you.
French fry mush and windmills.
Hey, I'm
I'm sorry
I was such a bitch.
And I'm sorry that
I didn't stick up for you.
I will from now on.
Friends?
Friends.
Hey, enough flirting,
you two.
We got to get to the presentation.
- Okay.
All right, say bonjour
to Montreal.
First, we start at the
Notre-Dame Basilica, where
I'll just
- Okay.
Corinne.
Hi.
- Hi,
Danny. I'm
I'm so sorry to, uh,
barge in on you. I-I
I just know that you're gonna be
in Greylock for a while,
with all of the mining stuff.
And I guess I hoped
that we could talk,
you know, before we start
running into each other
at the grocery store.
D, is that housekeeping?
Could you grab me
another pil
- Oh.
Sorry.
Hi.
- Um
Piper, this is
this is Corinne.
Uh, she's-she's
an old friend
from high school.
Um, Corinne,
this is
this is Piper,
my, um
my fiancée.
Fiancée.
Wow.
So nice to meet you.
Um
You're obviously busy,
so we'll just
we'll catch up another time.
You were right last night.
I can't be both your
friend and your leader.
So if I can't make you
feel better as your friend,
I'll make you feel
better as your leader.
What is this?
It's the deed to Bailey Pond.
It was a municipal plot,
but I had it converted
to private land this morning.
Your private land.
That deed means
you can rebuild
in a place that's full
of happy memories.
You feel
you feel bad
for taking away my land,
and your solution
is to take away more land?
Hmm.
I don't want Bailey Pond.
It's part of what makes
Greylock special.
It belongs to all of us.
If it had been private land
when I met Patience,
we never would have
made those happy memories
you're talking about.
I'm sorry, Grover. I was
- Enough, Sarah!
I don't want to talk to you!
Sarah.
We have a problem.
New Hampshire
National Guard.
I spotted them during my patrol.
Are we being invaded?
I think they're more
interested in keeping us out.
They already blocked off two
other roads that lead south.
Make this quick. I have to be
in Clarksville in half an hour.
Hey. Hey, Governor.
What is this?
What's going on?
Securing our border.
Haven't you heard?
Greylock is no longer
part of the United States.
Thank you.
This is an international
boundary now.
And like any
international boundary,
it has to be protected.
We can't just have people
wandering in and out
of the United States.
So I'm afraid
that your border
with New Hampshire
must remain closed
until the American
government establishes
diplomatic relations
with Greylock.
And our allies in Quebec
feel the same way.
They're gonna shut down
your northern border.
No more quick trips
for a tank of gas,
for a gallon of milk.
No more airports.
No more hospitals.
No more help.
You want to be
a sovereign nation,
