The Society (2019) s01e02 Episode Script
Our Town
1 [SOMBER MUSIC PLAYING.]
[BIRDS SQUAWKING.]
[BECCA.]
For ten days now, we've locked ourselves in our houses - [DOG WHIMPERS.]
- and cried ourselves to sleep.
Asked, "What is this place that looks like home?" And, "Why are we here?" What we know for certain is that the sun came up not too long ago, at 5:41 a.
m.
Which is how it should be, heading towards the summer solstice.
But at the train station, the 7:10 to New York never arrived.
Neither did the 7:25.
No trains arrived yesterday.
Or the day before.
Or the day before that.
Some people believed that we would wake up from this, and the dream would be over, and that everything would, again, be like it was before.
Ten days is a long time to believe that.
- - But the sun just keeps coming up every day, and you can't cry forever.
You have to put your shoes on, you have to eat, you have to have hope.
Don't you? Because who knows? Maybe tomorrow.
What are you talking about? Like, naked people dancing around an open flame? Okay, now you're gonna be disappointed.
It's not like that.
Gretchen, you okay? [GRETCHEN.]
Yep.
What are you doing? I'm waiting.
Waiting for what? Today is the day we were supposed to get home from the school trip, so I'm waiting.
- Gretchen - Maybe my mom and dad will come looking for me.
Maybe all of our parents.
Maybe the buses will come back to take us all home.
Well, I think if that happens, you know, like someone would notice, and you don't have to sit here.
Yes, I do.
Okay.
[STUDENTS CHANTING.]
Om [CHANTING CONTINUES.]
If it's something we did, tell us.
Or if there's something we need to do, give us some clue.
Useless.
Never would have pegged Lexie as a conduit to the heavens.
You have to admit, they're fair questions given the circumstances.
Hey, there's a game of Fugitive tonight.
It's gonna be the biggest one yet.
You in? Yeah, sure, whatever.
- [GIRL.]
Hey, you guys! - [BOY 1.]
Look! [GIRL.]
Whoa, check it out! [BOY 2.]
What the hell? [BOY 3.]
What the fuck? [ALLIE.]
What is that? Shit.
[INDISTINCT WORRIED CHATTER.]
[LEXIE.]
We asked for a sign! - [BOY.]
What does it mean? - [GORDIE.]
It doesn't mean anything! It's a fucking solar eclipse.
It's not a sign, it's a predictable astronomical event.
Just don't stare at it and and we'll be fine.
They can't actually believe that they can move the planets and the stars.
Makes them feel better.
Doesn't have to do more than that.
I hope it works for them.
I'd like to find a way to feel better.
I like the eggs.
Coffee, too.
I feel better already.
All right, uh, we're headed back to town hall to see what's hidden in those files.
Why this place is exactly like home, except with no parents and no smell.
Maybe it was our parents who stank.
[LAUGHS.]
Yeah, that would explain it.
A parallel universe.
Uh, we're in a a parallel universe.
- [DOOR OPENS.]
- [GORDIE.]
Or - maybe, I don't know.
- [DOOR CLOSES.]
[APPROACHING FOOTSTEPS.]
Where have you been? Scoping out a new house.
That big place on Carlyle is empty.
The Gerschensons'? Fuck if I know.
It's mine now.
Oh, plus, got some new kicks.
[CASSANDRA.]
You can't do that.
Why not? My old heel's coming loose.
You can't move into someone else's house.
Do you want to prove Harry's point, that we can just start taking things from each other? The place is empty, it's nobody's house.
- [ALLIE.]
Will.
- What? Easy for you to say, you're not fucking homeless.
You're not homeless.
This place is yours as much as it is ours.
That's kind, with without really being true.
[CASSANDRA.]
Mm-hmm? - Will.
- What? Okay, I'll think about it.
Keeping the shoes, though.
Those shoes are pretty cool.
Okay, so we have all agreed.
We need to check out the water and the power plants.
And figure out how much food we have, like a food census.
I can do that, yeah.
Me, too.
Together.
Um, maybe we should be more low-key.
- Some people could freak out.
- [CASSANDRA.]
No, no.
There's no reason to freak out, we're just doing inventory.
No, no.
I'm the problem.
I get their backs up.
Just went too fast when we first got here.
No, you didn't.
Yes, I did.
I obviously did.
Okay, this can't look like it has anything to do with me.
I need to lay low for a while.
[HELENA.]
Hey, where were you? You were already gone when I left this morning.
Nowhere.
Out.
The grave again? It's okay.
It's not your fault.
You know that.
Who cares if it's my fault? She's dead.
I watched her die, - and I can't stop thinking about it.
- Luke.
There's nothing around here to fucking do but think.
Or drink.
I know.
I'm sorry.
Hey.
- What? - [HELENA CHUCKLES.]
I'm speaking at church this afternoon.
Okay.
That's a mood killer.
You should come.
Bring the guys, the Guard, or whatever you call yourselves.
Will you bring them with you? I mean, I can try, but I just don't think it's at the top of their list of things to do today.
[SIGHS.]
So you just, like, decided? Have you seen that weird pagan ritual that Lexie and Eric are doing on the green? No.
People want answers.
They need comfort.
We have to know where to look.
Yeah, well, I'm looking.
Come to church.
[ESPRESSO MACHINE HISSES.]
[HARRY.]
What d'you do last night? Nothing.
Hung out.
You should stay over tonight.
After the party.
Who said I'm coming to your party? Well, it can't be that great spending the night alone in your own house.
I'm I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
It was stupid of me to say that I don't belong to you.
I do.
I'm sorry you're afraid of being alone.
I'm not.
I just want you.
I mean, honestly, it's crazy.
Ever since the middle of the tenth grade, all we've ever wanted was an empty house.
And now we have two of them.
Yeah, our timing is shit.
You walked out of the church with me the day we got here.
I called your name and you came.
- You made me choose.
- And you chose me.
I chose the idea.
That we get to keep what we have.
[SIGHS.]
I have a lot.
I'm lucky.
I want to keep it.
I think.
Maybe.
I don't even know now.
Under the circumstances.
Hey.
You You have me.
Keep me.
There's a game of Fugitive tonight.
Be my partner.
What a waste of time.
[SCOFFS.]
Yeah, well, there's time to waste.
[ZIPPING SOUND.]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER INSIDE HOUSE.]
[LAUGHTER INSIDE HOUSE.]
Elle.
What do you want? - N-nothing, just some company, I guess.
- Oh.
Well, we're busy.
What What are you guys doing? [CHUCKLES.]
We're busy.
Hello? I'm going.
Why don't you try one of your friend's houses? [ALLIE.]
Seems bigger when you think about counting it all up.
[WILL.]
Just wait till we get to the warehouses out on Boundary.
You know what I think we should do? Split up.
You choose.
I'll take the smaller stores on Wendell if you stay here.
All right.
Hey, inconspicuous, remember? I know how to be invisible.
That's how it used to be.
Sad, huh? [IN SIGN LANGUAGE.]
It still looks like that.
Pretty much.
More cars.
More assholes.
My brother's got a semi-automatic pistol.
There's progress for you.
Do you think it was always hypocritical fucking cesspool, or is that a new feature? It's New England.
Those roots go way back.
What's wrong? Uh I don't feel good.
Um I got to go home.
You want me to come with? No, no, no.
Stay, I'll be okay.
[FOOTSTEPS RECEDING.]
[GAGGING.]
[VOMITING.]
[COUGHING.]
[SPITTING.]
[PANTING.]
[GWEN.]
Okay.
Uh, fuck, marry, or kill? My version, my rules.
You pick one.
If you marry them, you can still fuck them, I guess, it just won't be the same.
And no current boyfriends.
Interesting.
So you're obviously not marrying Clark.
Eat shit, Madison.
Okay, first up.
Uh, Luke.
Um Shouldn't we wait for Kelly to get back? Luke.
Well, marry.
Definitely.
I'm thinking fuck.
Uh, Gordie.
Can we just say none of the above? Okay.
Uh Campbell.
- Kill.
- Kill.
- Kill.
- [ALL.]
Definitely.
How about Harry? What? Kelly's not here.
[ALL.]
Fuck! [ALL LAUGH.]
Did I ever tell you I met a guy? Over my spring break in Haiti at my public service program.
We built houses together.
Don't tell Clark.
His name was Seth.
Uh, we were both gonna go to Wesleyan.
He still is, I guess.
We can't kill them all.
We might have to marry them one of these days.
I mean who else is there? [GRUNTS.]
[CLARK.]
Missed.
You guys, maybe we're dead.
You know? And this is, like, Heaven.
- [JASON.]
Could be Hell.
- [GRIZZ.]
Optimist! Whatever.
It's not the worst kind of Hell.
Yeah, it's like first circle.
Maybe second.
Thing is, we don't really know the parameters, right? Like, have we been moved? Or has everyone else been moved? Does the world exist somewhere else, or is this Earth? I mean, we're guessing in the dark here.
Whoa.
My head fucking hurts now.
It's just your hangover, Clark.
Hair of the dog, bro.
[GRIZZ.]
Hey, maybe we're in the Matrix.
Or Narnia.
[CLARK.]
Nope.
No talking animals.
Although, I've been trying to walk through my closet just in case.
See what's on the other side.
[JASON.]
We're the other side.
Shit.
[LUKE.]
Shit.
Hey.
Hey, guys.
Saint Anselms.
- Come on.
Saint Anselms, remember? - [LUKE.]
Saint Anselms.
The greatest - [CLARK.]
I remember.
- [JASON.]
Get up.
Get up! - [CLARK GROANS.]
- [GRIZZ.]
No, man, come on.
- Get up.
- I'll do it, yeah, fine.
- [JASON.]
The greatest - [CLARK SIGHS.]
comeback in the history of ever.
That's right.
Line up.
[LUKE.]
Down six, last play of the game.
- [JASON.]
I got you, line up.
- [LUKE.]
Line up on the left.
Down! Set, hut! [LUKE.]
Oh, just past the reach.
Cut, cut, cut! Cut! He's got wicked speed! He goes to the corner! Yeah! [CLARK.]
Yes! He did it! Woo! The impossible! [JASON.]
Come on, get up.
This is serious, guys.
- [LUKE GROANS.]
- Twenty-four, twenty-three.
The score that'll never be forgotten.
Champions.
We are champions and nothing can take that away, ever.
Come on.
Take us out.
All right.
All right.
Centurions on three.
Ready? Centurions on me! Centurions on three! One, two, three! [ALL YELLING.]
Centurions! "Then you will call on me and come " Sorry.
"Then you will call on me and come and pray to me.
And I will hear you.
" [CELL PHONE CHIMES.]
That was Jeremiah 29:11 to 13.
It's one of my favorite Bible verses.
It always makes me feel a little better.
Um [SIGHS.]
- I think most of us are here - [DOOR OPENS.]
because we miss our parents.
- Or our brothers and sisters.
- [DOOR SHUTS.]
Because we're afraid.
We don't know when things are gonna go back to normal.
When someone is gonna come and rescue us.
If anyone's gonna come and rescue us.
I don't have an answer to those questions.
[DOOR OPENS.]
If my mom was here, I'd ask her, but [DOOR CLOSES.]
[SIGHS.]
The only thing I know for sure we can control is ourselves.
What we do.
If God still exists and I think He does then we need to show Him that we're still worthy of His love.
If we can do that - maybe we'll be saved.
- [DOOR OPENS.]
Because getting drunk and, I don't know, breaking things, it might make us feel good in the moment, but in the long run? It's making us feel worse.
- [WHISPERS.]
Hey.
- Hey.
Message not for you? Yeah, I'm not much for church services.
[CHUCKLES.]
I think people are doing pretty well under the circumstances, don't you? You and I, we're the lucky ones, of course.
Comparatively, you've got Allie, I've got Sam.
You were right, though.
I'll admit it.
We can't go on like this, we have to figure some things out.
You know? Make some rules.
Oh, yeah? Yeah.
Idle hands.
It's gonna be a problem eventually.
Right.
But the question is, is who's gonna decide, you know, the rules? Who has all the power? That should be interesting.
Hey.
Is Sam still staying at your house? Yeah.
Aw.
That's really sweet.
That's really nice.
All the cousins, huh? Maybe I should come over one night to visit.
Is that a no? [WILL SPEAKS UNDER HIS BREATH.]
Hey.
[KELLY.]
Hey.
What are you doing here? You texted me.
You said you want to see me.
That was last night.
Sorry, I just saw it today.
I went looking for you, and then Gwen said she passed you heading this direction, so, um What are you doing? Counting how much food we have.
Yeah, just in case.
[KEYBOARD CLACKING.]
Food rationing.
You know, people won't like that.
Yeah, well, it's better than starving.
You could've asked me for help.
You've been taking Harry's side in things.
It's been ten days.
I'm not the same person I was, okay? Are you? And if things need to be done, I want to do them.
And there are no sides anymore.
Yeah, I'm not so sure about that.
You type, I'll count.
- [DOOR OPENS.]
- [BELL JINGLES.]
[DOOR CLOSES.]
Hey.
Hey! Are you really going to eat all of that right now? I dunno.
Then put some back.
["CATHEDRALS" PLAYING.]
- Thank you for shopping with us.
- [DOOR BELL JINGLES.]
In the shadows Of tall buildings Of fallen angels On the ceilings Oily feathers In bronze and concrete Faded colors Pieces left incomplete The line moves slowly Past the electric fence Across the borders Between continents In the cathedrals Of New York and Rome There is a feeling That you should just go home And spend a life [ALLIE.]
You planning a trip? A weekend jaunt to the coast.
Hmm, yeah, I don't blame you.
It's a nice town, but it can get old pretty fast.
Hmm.
We're playing Fugitive tonight.
[ALLIE.]
Ooh.
You should come play with us.
It's gonna be the biggest one yet.
Party at my house after.
You asking me? You can be my partner, if you want.
I need a lookout.
She's with Will.
At the supermarket.
Who? The person you asked first.
I don't care.
You? No.
We're in the same boat.
Why not the same car? You can't be an asshole to my sister and then nice to me.
It doesn't work that way.
Tell her I said that she can come, too.
You say too many things you don't mean.
Hi.
I thought you were researching alternate universes.
Um, Bean can handle that.
Today, I was at the hospital library reading up on heart rhythms, and I went to your doctor's office and look what I found.
You want to listen to my heart? I've been trying to practice, but it's hard to hear your own heart.
I'm the patient, after all.
Okay.
[EXHALES SLOWLY.]
[CLEARS THROAT.]
- Well? - Don't move so much.
[WHISPERS.]
Oh.
And don't breathe.
I mean, it's rustling all the fabric.
- All I can hear is your shirt.
- Yeah.
This is ridiculous.
[CHUCKLES.]
[FLOORBOARDS CREAK.]
[KETTLE WHISTLES.]
[GORDIE SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY.]
[CASSANDRA.]
Okay, cool.
See you later.
Bye.
[CASSANDRA.]
Hi.
You're home for lunch? You totally manipulate him.
What? No, I don't.
Yes, you do.
You promise him things you would never have given him.
Except for the fact that you need him.
Except for the fact that you're scared.
Why don't you just tell him about Yale? Just tell him about admitted students weekend last month.
Can he hear that when he listens to your heart? There is no Yale.
Exactly.
[HARRY.]
Kelly.
What are you doing? Nothing.
Nothing? You're sitting in the middle of the grocery store in the afternoon surrounded by cans of beans and and a laptop.
If you already knew, why'd you ask? I'm serious.
Were you following me? - No.
- Then who told you we were here? No one.
I just came to get some shit for my party.
What the fuck are you guys doing? We're counting food.
To see how much we have.
Cassandra's idea? My idea.
We need to know how much we have, so we don't run out and make a stupid mistake.
- So you asked him.
- Jesus, Harry [WILL.]
Just do it with us.
We could use the help.
No.
No, that's okay.
[SIGHS.]
It's Fugitive in an hour.
You coming? Still no.
So, it's him over me? I'm not choosing anyone.
I'm choosing work over play.
High school's over, Harry.
[SCOFFS.]
I don't have anything more to show you.
I'm just starting to look through your files.
Um That's okay, isn't it? For me to look through your files? - Yeah.
- I know it's private information.
No, it's fine.
I can sign a release form if you want.
[BOTH CHUCKLE.]
Anything I should know? Um Well, you're up to date on your vaccinations and that's good.
Um, you had chickenpox when you were four.
Oh, yeah.
I remember that.
I'm figuring out your medication and the only one I don't know is, uh Loestrin.
That's the pill.
Oh.
Oh, yeah.
Better safe than sorry.
Yeah, definitely.
Um So, yeah, you probably shouldn't smoke then.
- Probably not.
- No.
Gordie you don't need to do this for me.
You know? What are you talking about? Well, I just Maybe you shouldn't be spending all your time worrying about me.
[CHUCKLES.]
Well, what else would I be worrying about? Big things, things that are about all of us.
Like, how do we get home? Well, if we got home, you wouldn't need me anymore.
Gordie Look, how about I make you a deal? Um I save you, and then you can save all of us.
Mostly me.
[CHUCKLES.]
Aah! What do you need the car for? Game of Fugitive in an hour.
What are you doing at Dad's office? [SIGHS.]
I'm trying to figure out why we're here.
In this place.
First one is a letter from some guy named Pfeiffer demanding $1.
5 million for the smell removal.
The other is a response, refusing to pay.
Signed by Dad and Uncle Rodgers dated the day before we were taken.
So what? So, it could mean something.
The smell, us being taken on the buses.
They're related in some way.
Maybe, I don't know.
You have to destroy those.
No way.
Fucking destroy them.
You want us to be blamed for this? What does that mean? I want to know the truth.
You're a fuckin' moron.
You and I may hate each other, but we still share our father's last name.
You think things aren't gonna get bad around here? Just wait.
If we're stuck in this place, things are gonna get so bad so fuckin' fast.
And you want to tell people that our family had something to do with this? [INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
Harry.
[HARRY.]
Cassandra! I haven't seen you in a while.
[CASSANDRA.]
Yeah, I've been keeping to myself.
Counting food.
I'm sorry? Right.
I was in the supermarket.
I saw.
Saw what? People counting food, you said? Like, to see how much we have? That's a really good idea.
Did you help them? No.
No, I'm busy.
I bet.
Have fun tonight.
Okay.
[CHUCKLES.]
[SIGHS.]
[BIRDS CAWING.]
[HARRY.]
Okay, okay, we're gonna - [CROWD CHATTERING.]
- Hello, hey! [CHUCKLES.]
Okay.
We're gonna wait a few minutes before we divide up sides, see who else shows up, so just hang out.
Hey, you, uh, playing? No.
No, I don't think so.
Why not? I'm not really in the mood for games.
Yeah.
Well, um Everyone's scared, you know.
This makes it better, temporarily.
I was the kid that cried on the first day of school, like, every year.
So, it takes me a little while to get used to things.
I keep thinking that God's punishing me.
Why do you think it's about you? I don't know, I just do.
There's this line from a play I like.
It goes "I don't think God punishes people for specific things, I think He punishes them in general for no reason.
" That's life, right? We make the most of it.
[ENGINE ROARS.]
[POLICE SIREN CHIRPS.]
[TIRES SQUEAL.]
[JASON.]
Some entrance, bro.
What do you think? Keys were inside.
- Who knew? - Uh Okay.
Okay! We're gonna divide up.
Half of us are fugitives.
You know who you are.
The rest are cops.
Fugitives are on foot, cops are in the cars.
Safety is the church, jail is the gazebo on the green.
Fugitives, you have three minutes to make a run for it.
The whole fucking town is fair game.
[CROWD CHEERING.]
All right, divide up.
Come on.
[CHEERING.]
[JASON.]
Yeah! Fugitives.
Your three minutes starts now! [AIR HORN BLASTS.]
[BOY.]
Go, go, go! Run, man! Come on! Hey! Fugitive! Get moving.
[INTENSE MUSIC PLAYING.]
- [BOY.]
Gazebo is jail? - [HARRY.]
Yes.
You showed up.
Well, who said I was playing? I could just be here to watch.
Yeah, naturally.
- Why'd you change your mind? - [ENGINES START.]
I just need a distraction.
And you have a fast car.
[HARRY CHUCKLES.]
[ENGINES ROAR.]
[CAR ALARM BEEPS.]
[HORNS HONK.]
[ENGINE REVVING.]
[ENGINE REVVING.]
[TIRES SQUEAL.]
[PULSING TECHNO MUSIC PLAYING.]
[CAR HORNS HONKING.]
[POLICE SIREN WAILS.]
Let's go! From Luke.
Fugitives spotted on Winpool.
- [CAR HORNS HONKING.]
- [GIRL SQUEALS.]
[TIRES SCREECHING.]
[HORN BLARES.]
[BOY.]
Woo! Yah! [LAUGHING.]
[PANTING.]
[RUNNING FOOTSTEPS.]
- [GRUNTS.]
- [THUDS.]
Woo! Yeah! [DISTANT CAR HORN HONKING.]
Hey.
Hey, I was coming back to see you.
[IN SIGN LANGUAGE.]
Yeah, I'm beat.
And hungry.
Well, did you find anything? Not yet.
Maybe tomorrow.
Walk home with me? Yeah.
[IN SIGN LANGUAGE.]
You okay? Yeah, it was nothing.
It was probably something I ate, you know.
Maybe [BOY YELLS.]
[BECCA.]
Asshole! What the fuck? Come on.
Let's just go home.
[KELLY.]
Where'd you learn to do this? In six foster homes over ten years.
I had to fend for myself, so I learned to cook with whatever I could find.
Mm.
Canned jalapenos.
Even Spam is good with these.
[CHUCKLES.]
I wish someone had taught me.
Nah, you're lucky you didn't need to know.
No.
I'm not.
Crack open a couple beers for us, or wine? Maybe a bottle of wine.
Are you hungry? I'm not very, no.
Um Cassandra, I have a question.
Um, are you sleeping with someone? Yes and no.
Yes, but with someone I'm probably never going to see again.
So, no.
It was this guy that I met when I was visiting Yale.
Right.
Are you in love with him? No.
I only saw him twice.
So not yet.
So, no.
Okay.
I'll take a little more than that.
[DISTANT CAR HORN HONKS.]
- [ELLE SCREAMS.]
- [BOTH LAUGH.]
- You scared the shit out of me.
- I'm sorry.
Okay.
You can take me to jail.
I'll take you someplace better than jail.
Fugitive spotted on Maple.
[ALLIE.]
Oh, there! [TIRES SQUEAL.]
Hey.
- [HORN BLARES.]
- [TIRES SQUEAL.]
Fuck.
- Allie! Allie! - [SLAMS CAR DOOR.]
Allie! Allie.
[ALLIE GROANS.]
[CLARK.]
Oh, shit, man.
I I didn't see her.
[LAUGHS.]
My heart is beating so fast! - [LAUGHS.]
- [EXHALES.]
Jesus.
What are you doing? We have fugitives to catch! Jesus.
[ALLIE.]
Come on! Not a bad day's work.
No.
I've never tried to count up everything in a supermarket before, but I feel pretty good about it.
[BOTH CHUCKLE.]
Cassandra will be pleased.
You can't do that without asking.
Sorry.
Can I? Not yet.
Is that why you let me do this with you? No.
Okay.
Good.
Nine a.
m.
tomorrow? We have aisles to go.
Nine a.
m.
tomorrow.
["GO TO TOWN" PLAYING.]
If you're down, boy, really down Baby let me watch you go to town It's your one chance, baby Never or now Yeah Let me see you go to town, baby Go to town, yeah Baby let me watch you go to town It's your one chance, baby Never or now No, I didn't.
Hand to God.
No.
I did not do that.
[BOTH CHUCKLE.]
[SIGHS.]
How old was I? I don't know, like, eight or something.
Okay, well, I can't take responsibility for anything I did when I was eight.
Mm-hmm.
I was such a dork.
No.
No, you were peculiar.
And intense.
Thanks.
What was that? I don't know.
I just didn't know you.
Like, at all.
[DISTANT THUNDER RUMBLING.]
We should go.
We should go inside.
[MOANS SOUNDING ON LAPTOP.]
No.
You don't get off on this? It doesn't look like that woman's having any fun.
I'm gonna go home.
Don't.
We can have fun.
[SCOFFS.]
I don't want to have fun.
[SIGHS.]
Why did you pick me? Why do you keep picking me? You don't know me.
'Cause I like you.
I think that we're kind of the same, don't you? No.
We are.
Neither one of us has many friends.
Why don't people like you? I don't know.
I won't touch you.
Promise.
[THUNDER RUMBLING.]
You ever done this before? Sure.
Sometimes.
[SLOW EXHALE.]
That was it? Yeah.
Yeah, that was so great.
[ELECTRICITY CRACKLES.]
[THUNDERCLAP.]
[GWEN.]
Hey, what happens when they go out for good? Who fixes them? I'm serious.
Who turns them back on? Maybe they never go back on.
- Hey, you got any flashlights? - I don't know.
Maybe somewhere.
Well, iPhone ones.
Battery's never gonna last.
All right, expedition to the hardware store for flashlights.
Who's in? [GWEN.]
Oh, shit.
[GIRL.]
We should get home.
Before it gets really bad out there, before the streetlights go out.
Well, you can all stay here.
If you want.
Well, I'm going home.
[THUNDER RUMBLING.]
No, I can't No, no, no.
I can't.
I can't.
If I drink too much, I pass out, I swear.
[BOTH LAUGH.]
- What? - You're chatty.
- [CHUCKLES.]
No, I'm not.
- Yeah, you are.
I'm not.
- You're funny.
- I'm not funny.
I'm not funny.
Not many people know that about you.
And I like watching you.
[CHUCKLES.]
I'm not even doing anything.
Okay.
[CLEARS THROAT.]
Okay, so do something.
I Like what? I don't know, like Like, I'll tell you what to do and then and then you do it.
No.
Mm-mm.
And then you tell me what to do and I'll do it.
Like Simon Says.
Touch your nose.
[CHUCKLES.]
I know where this is going.
It goes wherever we want it to go.
- You can stop at any time.
- Well, then what's the point? Hmm? Touch your head.
Touch your knees.
Touch your knees.
Touch your breast.
Hey.
Hey.
You're safe.
And I'll always keep you safe, always.
That's why I picked you.
Because you need me.
We need each other.
Touch yourself.
Where? [SOFT MOAN.]
You see? We get to make the rules now.
Now you.
[MOANING.]
Elle.
It's nice to meet you.
[DOOR CLOSES.]
- Hey.
- [BEAN.]
You blew me off all day today.
Oh, I'm sorry.
I'll be there tomorrow.
I was doing my own research.
There's some spaghetti in the fridge if you want.
When you told everyone the thing this morning was a scheduled eclipse, how did you know? I didn't, actually.
I I just figured.
Because you were wrong.
I looked it up.
The next scheduled eclipse in North America is not until 2024.
Take a look.
What does that mean? I don't know.
That we're not on the same Earth.
Not exactly the same, anyway.
Not the same solar system.
So, where are we? [LOUD CLATTERING.]
[TIRES SCREECH.]
Oh! Come on, come on, come on! Hey! Hey, hold up! You gotta give us some.
- Get your own.
- Dude, you can share.
You can eat my asshole, Jason.
[GRUNTS.]
[SCREAMING AND GRUNTING.]
[BOY.]
Hey! Little shit! [WILL.]
Break it up! [JASON.]
Fuck you, Will! [JASON CONTINUES SHOUTING.]
[GLASS SHATTERS.]
[ALL YELLING AND GRUNTING.]
Hey! [EXPLOSION.]
[THUNDER RUMBLING.]
Even on our own Earth, you can't understand it, it's too big.
Multiple universes, you said.
Not a word of this to anyone.
Not yet.
Rain still falls down instead of up.
That's a comfort, huh? [CELL PHONE VIBRATES.]
[CROWD YELLING AND SCREAMING.]
[BOY GRUNTS.]
[GLASS SHATTERING.]
["IN A BLACKOUT" PLAYING.]
I live in a nameless town No need to wander around I live in a nameless town Blackout [GLASS SHATTERS.]
[BECCA.]
In the town where we live, the sun set today at 8:47 p.
m.
Summer solstice.
Long days.
But our nights are about to get a lot longer.
