Episode 2

[soft music plays]
[indistinct chatter]
[Alanna] Please eat some stuff.
There's so much
[Alanna] Hi Alfia, how are you?
Thank you for coming.
You look gorgeous.
You know Have you met the girls?
That's You know, Alaviaa.
Aryaana, Srushti.
-Hi
-Hi.
Can we get a chair, please?
[Alanna] In the start, all the girls
were just talking to each other,
and she was, at one point,
just standing there.
I was definitely surprised
to see her there.
[Alaviaa] I felt kind of bad because
I feel like she's walking into this
Four girls who, you know,
are so close to each other.
Idea of Alfia
I thought she was very pretty.
And I like pretty people.
Hi! Are you from here?
I'm from Bombay.
-From Bombay?
-From Bombay.
I get really awkward, and I think
the first thing I said was,
"Hi, this is Srushti.
Where are you from?"
[chuckles, indistinct murmurs]
-Srushti said, "Where are you from?"
-[Alanna giggles] Srushti
I think I come across as such a bimbo.
I don't know why.
I Maybe I am. I don't even know.
[upbeat music plays]
[Hardik] This is too much, right?
I have you, I'll be fine.
Hi!
I'm Alfia. I'm 24 years old.
When this opportunity came to me
through a friend, Hardik,
I wanted to meet the girls once
[Alfia] to see whether
I'd be able to fit in.
Which I have my doubts about.
Kids, we need to get
a hashtag for Alanna and Ivor.
We have "Aliv."
I don't like "Aliv."
It sounds stupid.
[Alfia] While I was sitting there,
and I was shaking under the table,
[Alfia] I also realized that I'm
an outsider to that whole group,
and it's going to be really,
really difficult.
-Hardik!
-Yeah?
What are you going to call
her now, since you call me Alfie?
That was a discussion
I was supposed to have with you.
Because Alaviaa Jaaferi
and then Alfia Jafry.
I don't know why
everybody's name is so similar.
Aryaana, Alaviaa, Alfia, Alanna.
Like, where are all the other names?
The only one who has it easy is Srushti.
But Srushti also hates her name.
She calls herself Christie in LA. So
-Do you wanna drink?
-Yeah.
I can get it for her.
I don't drink,
so I'll have something to drink
that'll refresh my head right now.
-Okay, cool.
-Because you're religious, no?
Yeah. Of course, I am quite religious,
but it's not for me also.
Your parents?
My parents have never
stopped me from doing anything.
I need to know the recipe.
It has Oh! wait, why? You cook?
-You do?
-I'm really passionate about cooking.
I want to become
the Indian "Nigella Lawson."
It's a dream, a small dream.
[Alanna] There was also a moment
where we wanted to shoot.
And we called Aditi,
who's not a part of CollabTribe.
And we forgot to call Alfia.
Do you wanna come in?
Then I was like, Alfia come.
I think it'll take time for the girls
[Alanna] to get used to
now that there's a new person.
I think after a few minutes,
I think everyone
warmed up towards each other.
[giggling]
[Alanna] Four of our girls
have come in phases.
We had Srushti, that was the OG,
the first.
[Alanna] Then we had Aryaana come in,
and then we had Alaviaa come in.
And there's always this one week that
they hate the new girl for no reason.
Absolutely like, who's this new girl?
[upbeat music fades]
[groovy music plays]
You're probably gonna order vegetarian.
I'm not that hungry.
I ate something already.
-What did you eat?
-Upma.
God! I don't know how
people eat upma and stuff.
It's a Maharashtrian dish.
-It's not a Maharashtrian dish.
-It's a Maharashtrian dish.
-I just can't have all this for breakfast.
-[Aryaana] It's not Maharashtrian.
The texture kind of freaks me out
a little bit.
[Aryaana] Srushti, Alaviaa, and I
We hadn't caught up in a really long time.
Alanna couldn't make it because
she had her wedding stuff to plan.
Did you enjoy at Alanna's bridal shower?
Wasn't it like so aesthetically perfect?
-She's always like that.
-[Aryaana] Alanna
-Yeah, it's Alanna.
-How did you expect anything different?
Didn't feel like we were in Bombay.
Do you think Alfia felt awkward?
-She was nervous, she said.
-She was so nervous.
And it's so understandable though.
-I would have been terrified.
-Yeah.
If people don't know us
and you just look at us
through social media,
I think we come across
as really intimidating.
I remember her
Instagram used to be public.
-Hmm. I have no idea.
-Because
I remember someone mentioning
how she had gotten married.
And I saw it online.
-Wait, how old is she?
-She's younger.
Wait, when did she get married?
I don't remember, this is like
I barely know her.
This is something I heard.
I wouldn't bring it up with her
unless she tells us herself because
-I don't think she still has a husband.
-I don't think she has a husband, guys.
[Aryaana] It sounded serious.
So I don't know if that's
something to be gossiping about.
Because, love to gossip, but
I think I looked her up when
-That's crazy.
-Like my name
Like, there was that confusion
-because there was an article about her.
-Yeah.
-But it was in my name.
-Yeah.
And then I saw her, and
her Instagram was public and she had her
Like she was in her lehenga
and everything.
Should we Google her?
-Now?
-Go ahead.
I don't think there's going
to be any of this on Google.
Was the guy like someone
famous or something?
-Wait!
-[indistinct chatter]
There are pics.
[Alaviaa] I don't think
she's still married.
-She's not.
-[Alaviaa] But she didn't mention like
-her seeing anyone.
-We'd have met.
-[Srushti] There are photos.
-I told you.
Is that what you saw?
I mean, I remember
her Instagram being public.
She is getting Taking pheras.
-I mean, this is a proper wedding photo.
-[Alaviaa] Or maybe her
Wait, so, did she go through
with the wedding?
That's crazy!
I don't know what to think about that.
I don't know what's the story behind it.
But if there are photos, then it's true.
But yeah, super wild.
But this is uploaded two years ago.
-She's younger, for sure.
-She's not underage, so that's good.
Srushti, no one's getting married
before 18.
-Oh, yeah! No, I thought it was 21.
-No, but you're right. It's probably
I thought the limit was 21. Sorry.
That's crazy. That means that
there's a crazy story behind it.
Do you all know what Alfia is pursuing?
Cooking, she said.
-She said she wants to be the
-She doesn't wanna act?
Indian Nigella.
-Which is a pretty big deal.
-Yeah.
-She's huge.
-Yeah.
[Srushti] If you bring
all five of us together,
don't you think we all kinda complete
everything that a person needs?
I mean, yeah,
we kind of have everything in-house
-In-house
-at this point.
-Is what I was trying to say.
-[Alaviaa] Yeah.
Like, if you want a brand partnership
for your music video,
won't Alanna be
the perfect person you'll go for?
-Mm-hmm. That's true.
-If you want like,
you know, to source something,
she can help you.
And if you want to eat,
now there's Alfia. I guess.
"Now if you wanna eat, there's Alfia,"
she said. [chuckles]
[groovy music fades]
[birds chirping]
-[funky city music]
-[train horn honks]
[indistinct chatter]
Aren't we looking amazingly matched?
These shoes don't match.
The ones that do, I can't walk in.
[in Hindi] It's okay.
[in English] I feel like
it's about Alanna today.
Exactly!
[man 1] Hey, go and get a pagdi!
[in Hindi] I'm just saying.
[woman 1 in English] Do what you feel.
I don't want you looking
at your wedding pictures
afterward and saying,
"Oh, but I should have opened my hair."
Please eat, Alanna. Since morning,
-she is only surviving on Red Bull.
-I only had Red Bull and IV.
I want to be fed every day.
[woman 1 chuckles]
[sighs] This is real.
This is actually happening.
I'm the luckiest. Hands down!
No questions about it.
[woman 2] Listen, when do you want
to start your photo shoot?
-At, 02:00 p.m.
-[woman 1] 2:00 p.m.?
What's the time? Are we running late?
[photographer] Light! Look here now.
Okay, for Manish, he wants a from down
to top shot of the lehenga.
Have you ever seen his feed?
You go down!
[Alanna] Filming during the wedding
was like drawing the line
between "this is actually
our wedding" and content.
When we hired a photography team,
they said that their usual turnaround is
three weeks to three months.
And this was the first project
that they took on
where we were pushing out content
the same day.
[woman 3] Girls' side is gold.
[man 1] Chikki, you have to
change the color.
-What's the
That's the girls' side.
Brother, we have to change.
My fault.
The baraat is coming now.
[traditional wedding music]
[videographer] Everyone, walk.
["Kudmayi" plays]
[Alanna] I had actually
no tears left, I think,
by the time I walked down the aisle
because Ahaan and I were standing
in the hallway for 15 minutes,
and both of us just looked at each other,
and we were just crying and crying.
["Kudmayi" continues playing]
[Ivor] She looked absolutely beautiful.
And I knew, I already knew,
like, she was gonna look stunning.
-Aw!
-So
And you know,
it was just like the best moment ever.
They come close to the most
ideal couple I can see in my life.
[Srushti]
They're absolutely perfect together.
[Alaviaa] Even before they got married,
they were like a married couple.
I feel like they complement
each other really well.
The priest did not like that
-[Ivor] That we kissed?
-we kissed before the wedding.
-Really?
-Yeah, he was very
-Oh, my gosh.
-Because
this is my family priest.
He's been there since I was born.
-And we've not kissed once, but ten times.
-Yeah, I know.
-Ten times is
-Because I couldn't hold it back.
I was like, "Get over here.
I just want to kiss you."
[priest in Hindi] Today, we all are here
for Alanna and Inder's wedding.
Ivor!
[indistinct chatter]
-Inder!
-Inder!
-Ivor.
-Inder!
My whole life, I have told my
parents I never wanted an Indian wedding.
[cheering, applauding]
And I remember going home
to my mom and telling her,
I think I've changed my mind.
[Aryaana] All these foreign people
that were there were enjoying it.
It made me appreciate
my own culture so much more than I did.
I got to give y'all headbutts.
-Headbutts.
-Headbutts.
-Right?
-[cheering, applauding]
[speaks indistinctly]
God bless!
[gentle song plays]
[Alaviaa] The decor, the food,
everything was super pretty
and super Instagrammable.
[starstruck song playing]
[Alaviaa] The wedding was really fun.
So everyone was there.
The who's who of Bollywood.
So I met a lot of people
that I hadn't seen in a while.
And it was really fun
to actually see everyone under one roof.
I had like, the sickest time.
[groovy dance song plays]
[Alanna] My family and all his friends
have bust out
I'm not just saying it
because this is my wedding,
but one of the most insane performances
I have at least seen in my life.
-You guys killed it.
-[Ivor speaks indistinctly]
I didn't know
I didn't think White people could dance.
[Ivor] Ahaan's like a star, man.
-He's like a mini Elvis mixed with
-He is.
-I don't know, like what he is!
-He's like a Michael Jackson.
-Yeah. So good.
-And Ananya, Ananya killed it, too.
-I mean, she
-So, Ananya, of course.
-But she's been dancing forever.
-Yeah.
[Alanna] My family's known the Khan family
for quite a while.
And I was actually very, very,
very touched.
When I hugged him, I hugged like,
my dad's friend, my mom's friend.
[Ivor] I just felt like the energy
of the entire wedding
was so amazing the entire time.
Like, there was so much
love throughout the room.
[Alanna] We had
a lot of old friends, new friends,
and family from all across, come together.
And that's just the
That's the best thing about weddings.
[groovy dance song fades]
[indistinct chatter fades]
[upbeat music]
[Hardik] Figure out a way
to get in touch with them.
Find out if you can get
a par exit of our equity.
And then get a figure in mind
and just push them to sell.
-How are you?
-Good.
Did you enjoy the wedding?
-First, I want to ask if you had fun.
-[Alfia] Yes.
Did you get to spend time with the girls?
-Somewhat Yeah.
-Little bit.
So, I'm finally meeting Alfia today.
I do know a little about her from Hardik
but I kind of wanted
to meet her in person.
So, let's just get straight into it.
First of all, are you ready to come to LA?
I'm not very excited.
-Let me be very honest.
-Why?
I don't know, I feel like
I met everyone, and the reason
-I actually wanted to speak to you.
-Yeah.
Because it's very important for me to also
know what is expected of me, right?
-Yeah.
-It can't be all rosy
and I get to do whatever
the hell I want to do. You know?
I think your life is going
to be different because of this.
-Yo!
-What's up?
Dude, I'm so stressed.
What do you want to do as your vertical,
now when we go back to the States?
Honestly speaking,
I'll tell you what your strengths are.
Like, you're very good
at getting people together.
You're very good at organizing events.
And now, since we are
starting this whole thing again,
we need someone with your
energy who can push the girls
to do these kinds of events.
[Alaviaa] So, I kinda just wanted
to understand
what more I can do.
You know, I started my company here.
So, I'm hoping to,
you know, handle that while I'm there,
but also try to build a life
outside of India.
But I think they also
need to realize that,
they have to make the most of being there,
in terms of even meeting people,
which I don't think,
-I know that. So, I'm gonna
-they have done.
obviously try my best,
but I also need you to push them.
We have the sickest house possible.
-The sickest house.
-Yeah.
You just make it an entirely, juicy place
-where they can have these crazy gigs.
-Yeah.
Well, I definitely need to think about it.
So you were kind of in the industry,
-I would say.
-Yeah.
I'm sure you've
Have you been offered movies?
-Yeah.
-What made you say no?
It was not my thing.
-Very honestly
-[Alanna] Just not your thing?
I don't disrespect anyone who does it,
but it's not for me.
It doesn't satisfy my soul.
It doesn't make me happy.
I want to eventually
have my own cooking show.
I want to travel the world.
And that's about it.
Why didn't you do this?
The way, like, my brother and sister
love cinema and love it, and live for it.
I just don't feel that.
Like, Ananya and Ahaan.
They have something in them
-that I just don't have.
-[Alfia] Yeah.
There's so much more, right?
We live in a little bubble here.
-The Bollywood Bubble.
-Yeah.
-There's so much more out there.
-Yeah.
Why is your Instagram account private?
I don't know how to put this nicely,
but I've been married.
I've been divorced.
I'm just gonna say it, right?
I heard you ran away from the mandap.
-Is that true?
-Mandap, that I No.
-I was there for the whole wedding.
-See, I've heard too many stories.
But I wanna reconfirm
because again people exaggerate.
My wedding happened.
My reception happened.
But yes, I had a breakdown.
You did? You realized, "What have I done?"
It's very exaggerated. "Oh, she ran."
Is it a bloody joke?
-No, I understand.
-But I did go missing
from my cocktail.
-Because I needed
-Where did you go?
I went back to the hotel. [scoffs]
How did this even play out?
I come from a conservative Muslim family.
I've been raised
with the feeling that eventually,
you have to get married
and that's the fairy tale.
And I believed in that dream.
So, I met this person
and whatever. Things
Families liked each other.
Everything worked out.
Also, when I met him, I was 18.
Oh, my God!
I was so young.
You don't know what you're doing.
And my parents have always
had a lot of faith in my decisions.
So this was your decision?
Yeah, like, I said yes.
It's not like someone was holding
a whip over my head and saying,
"No, no, you have to get married."
And also, with the divorce,
it was my decision.
I don't want to blame anyone.
Because I selfishly chose my happiness.
-And I am owning whatever I did.
-Yeah.
I mean, I'd have never
gotten my divorce so easily.
It's not a joke to get a divorce, right?
If it wasn't the family supporting me,
more than my own.
[in a shaky voice] I absolutely
own my decisions.
They never told me that
try to work it out.
They never forced anything upon me.
No matter
I was married for a couple of months.
But And I lived in that house,
even though we didn't live together.
We didn't even spend one night together.
[melancholic music]
To be divorced at 22.
It's not been easy. This
Everyone was hurt.
But I knew what I had to do
for myself.
And I'm very
proud of
where I am in life today.
I'm okay.
I'm okay with what I've done because
if I wasn't happy,
I wouldn't be able
to keep anyone else happy.
I actually went private
a year and a half ago.
What was bothering me was
the noise of my own people.
The space that you're in now, do you
think you're comfortable going public?
-Because we need that.
-Yeah.
Actually, I had this whole plan.
I, in fact, wanted to start fresh.
Start a whole new feed.
Every day, I want to post.
I want to be a little updated
version of Nigella Lawson.
I'm so happy. I love you.
[both laugh]
I wish all the girls were like this.
Please.
In terms of shoots.
Now, I know, I've heard
you're a little reserved
with the way you dress and stuff.
We do a lot of group shoots.
A lot of them require
We're styled.
We do a few things in like,
bikinis and we will have
We will be styled in different
ways for our CollabTribe shoots.
Are you comfortable doing that?
No.
I don't do bikinis.
[tense music]
It's not who I am.
There will be some times,
that we have to experiment a little bit.
I would never do it.
There is going to have
to be some meeting in the middle.
There will be things
that come in as a group
that might involve a lot of money,
and I think that we're
going to have to work with that.
But you can't do everything for money?
-I mean, I work
-But this is my company.
And we have to do these things.
I actually see how much money
goes and how much money is going
just to get you from Mumbai to the US,
and you guys living there.
So, I think, at the end of the day,
it is about the money
because that is the end goal.
Hi.
Hi, how are you?
-Hi.
-What's up?
Okay, anyway, I need to go. But
-Who are you meeting?
-I will call you.
-Where are you going?
-Why do you have to go?
-I need to go eat.
-Okay, bye.
So what's up?
The backbone of CollabTribe.
What's going on?
-[chuckles]
-I feel like it's, uh
I'm going to be subjected to some
boring ass conversations about money.
-Hardik talking about
-I'm kidding
-Calling money boring.
-I'm kidding
-That's all he talks about.
-I'm kidding, I'm all ears.
Alfia's great though.
-She has some energy, she has this
-[Hardik] I like her.
Let her come to LA.
Let's just see how she amalgamates
-into this whole process.
-[Srushti] Has she ever been?
We've put half a million dollars
into this entire movement
-of creating this aspiration.
-More!
But I don't think the girls
realize the scale of
what Hardik is investing
in these girls' careers.
And I think that's also the way he is.
He's so chill and like, "I'm your friend."
So. yeah, I hope that everyone realizes
the amount of money
we're investing in this.
What are we looking to
reinvest in? Is there a ceiling?
You guys can easily be
making ten to twelve mil a year.
So what's half a million
in comparison to what
you guys are capable of?
Honestly, I don't even
know how much 12 million dollars are.
I don't know. I don't understand.
The only thing that we
need to focus on is building
eyeballing attention to you guys.
You also sell an aspirational
value to the other billion people
who can do the same way.
I mean, even if you have to put in another
million or a couple of million dollars,
that's nothing in comparison
to what each individual can make
and what this company can generate
if it's built into an
intellectual property, right?
And it can be a CollabTribe 2.0.
[Alanna] So, this is our second shot.
I don't like the feeling that
I'm wasting my time or energy.
So, I'm going to put in my 100 percent.
And I hope that all the girls do, too,
because I don't like failing.
And if it doesn't happen this time,
I'm out or they're out.
[Srushti] We only fail if we do try.
And I feel like the first time,
nobody tried.
[Srushti]
So if she's saying that she's out
if we fail again, I'm saying
that she never tried the first time.
Like, she didn't.
[regal entrance music]
-Hi, Mom!
-Hi, my darling.
-[in Hindi] Greetings!
-Greetings!
-[in Gujarati] I'm leaving for LA.
-Why?
Tell Dad that I left
otherwise he will keep calling me.
Yeah, okay!
But why do you keep
going to LA again and again?
Work, Mom! I am trying to build
CollabTribe there.
[in English] My mom's very simple.
She absolutely has no idea
what I do in life.
[in Marathi] Srushti!
Keep these spices in your bag.
Mom, I don't
have space in my bag.
-I can't take boxes with me, Mom.
-But the spices
-[in English] You have to open it.
-[in Marathi]Your grandmother sent these,
take these with you.
[in English] Twenty-five.
That's fine I think.
-No.
-No?
Two kilos up.
We all are going to LA
and then we have like a thing that we do.
-For social media
-Very social work.
-Not social work, social media.
-Social media.
[in Gujarati] But yeah! We should also
do good social work for people.
[in English] Maybe you can
call it social work as well.
But it's something like that.
[in Gujarati] When are you
getting married?
-I am getting all tensed.
-[in English] Bye, Mom.
-Please!
-Okay.
[in Marathi] What's this?
[in Hindi] Bye, son.
[in English] Bye, Mom.
[funky song plays]
[Hardik] I think I've come up with great
business ideas in the swimming pool.
I'm a fan of the view and swimming,
so I think
[Aryaana] When he showed me photos,
I said, "This is not real.
This is a render."
He said, "No, it's real."
And I said, "This is fake."
I got it even without seeing it.
I just saw the pool and the picture
and I just got it.
I make highly impulsive decisions.
Sometimes,
I make highly irrational decisions.
I don't think I would call it as
the Hardik Zaveri business model,
more so ever than
the Hardik Zaveri way of life.
This is the dream content house.
[Alanna] It's like, every single spot
in this house is so aesthetic.
[Srushti] I feel like there are so many
spots and spaces to actually shoot
or even hang around.
I feel like aesthetic places just kinda
give me ideas and make me feel better.
That makes me perform better.
Where have you found these,
yoga challenge pics?
-I just looked them up online.
-Is it a trend?
-I love it.
-It is a trend.
This is the first video
we are filming in this house, so
But let's do an intro.
Hi, guys!
Hello, everybody!
Um, Aryaana's found some crazy,
couple of inspo pics.
Srushti and I will not
be able to do any of this.
Me and Srushti were just
trying to enjoy this house
before everyone came.
-Can you take my weight?
-Yeah.
When we do content together,
it tends to do better.
Hold my legs.
Oh, I don't think so. [screams]
Oh, fuck.
Bro! Bro, that's not on.
-[chuckles]
-Aryaana, that was not on this whole time.
Who said I'm awful at yoga?
I never attempted it.
Oh, my God!
[both scream]
I could be great if I tried.
Okay, hold.
I think the legs are on the back,
not on my butt.
Not on my butt.
If you were to just cancel out
the video and just listen to the sound.
I don't even want to know
what that's going to sound like.
[Aryaana] Srush, you have to
go like, way lower.
I don't even know how
to get on top of you.
[Srushti] Can you take my legs up?
[Aryaana] Bums are not touching.
Go for it.
-[Aryaana] Ouch!
-[Srushti] Wait. Are we in the thing?
Don't Don't you dare.
-[groans]
-[Aryaana] No!
I had fun doing it.
-[Aryaana] Not on my butt
-[chortles]
I don't know why it looks like that.
You have a sick mindset.
[gritty hip-hop track playing]
[honking]
What is this?
What a sick truck!
[Hardik] Ta-da!
Have you added another
one to your collection?
There's a bow on it.
This is my wedding present for you both.
-Shut up
-No, no way.
Oh, my God! Dude, this is insane.
Let's hug.
Seven months ago,
Ivor and Hardik had a conversation,
and he showed Hardik a
picture of a truck that he liked.
He said, "Oh, my God,
how sick is this truck!"
And never did he think,
six months down the line
that this truck was going
to be in his driveway.
It's huge.
-I need a stepping stool.
-[indistinct chatter]
-Ow! Oh, my God! I hit my head.
-[Ivor] You alright?
-Yes.
-[Hardik] You like it?
-I love it.
-Yeah, baby, you look good in this thing.
-Wow!
-[Hardik] It's high time
to get your driving license now.
[Alanna] He also said that if
I get my driving license here,
he's going to give me a red Ferrari.
So I'm going to hold him to that.
Let's see.
Damn, now we can go
off-roading and stuff, huh?
-[Alanna speaks indistinctly]
-I gotta check this out.
I'm a little overwhelmed.
-It's a VA?
-[Hardik] Yep.
-What's the lift on it? Like eight inches?
-[Hardik] 16.
Also, Als!
I've done a little bit
of family planning for you guys.
For you, when you have kids.
So this is also a double truck cab,
so it has space behind also for the twins
that you guys are gonna have.
-Yeah. Triplets.
-Twins and a full family in the back.
What happens if we have triplets?
Bro! This is just
We gotta drive this. You gotta get in.
-Come on.
-I'll get in?
-Yeah, we gotta drive.
-Go take a lap.
Just send me the location
Hardik, you gotta get in, too, man.
What do you mean?
It's your thing. Have fun.
-Come back fast.
-Be there in a second, dude.
-This is crazy.
-[Ivor speaks indistinctly]
[Hardik] Both of them love going skiing,
they love doing camping stuff,
they love traveling the countryside.
And me being me, gifting them that
kinda foresee bringing me a lot of joy.
[Ivor] Jesus! This is insane.
This thing is so high.
I feel weird accepting this.
I feel like it's too much.
How many friends do
you have that you're like,
"Oh, I like this car" and then like
-Yeah, none.
-Like, next month
-it's in your driveway.
-None.
-Crazy.
-Yeah.
Feel like he deserves another hug.
Should we go in?
-How are we going to one-up this?
-I don't know. [chuckles]
I still think he's very extra.
[Alanna] Even my parents
haven't gifted me a car,
and this guy came out of nowhere,
and just gifting us a truck
was crazy to think about.
[groovy music]
[in Hindi] Go and tell the helper
to bring all the food outside.
All three of you take one
dish each and bring it here.
Thank you.
It is not like a normal day.
It's neither Eid
nor New Year, so why?
[man in English] It's Alfia's
New Year resolution
-What?
-[in Hindi] that she will cook regularly.
-Here it is.
-[in English] What has she cooked?
-[in Hindi] Oh wow!
-It's nihari and biryani.
[in Hindi] The first plate is for Daddy.
[in English] My father is Rumy Jafry.
He's a writer and a director.
He's made over 55 films.
[inhales deeply] Ah!
[in Hindi] I swear, it smells delicious.
[in English]
Basically, Jodi No.1, Biwi No.1,
Hero No.1. All the "No.1s," Dad.
And that's why he named me also Alfia.
Because I'm a number one.
That's what my name means.
-[in Hindi] There you go, try it out.
-Yeah, have it.
[in English] So sweet!
And I knew I had to do
all the buttering up
so that he would be okay with me going.
And "Miya Bhai" food
for a "Miya Bhai" father.
[Alfia] What else does he need?
[in Hindi] How is the food?
It's great.
Now, tell me, I don't get it.
The delicious food, your grandmother,
your brother is here, and your mummy.
It appears as if your intentions
and asks are different.
[goofy music]
If I ask something,
will you please give it to me?
-What do you want?
-There is one opportunity.
I have a friend named Hardik.
I met him through Nirvan.
You know Nirvan, right?
Yeah, I have known Nirvan
since he was a child.
We met through Nirvan as he is
Nirvan's close friend.
-The one who is in America?
-Yes.
He owns a company named CollabTribe.
He helps talented people grow.
You know that I have been passionate
about cooking for a long time.
You know that
I wanted to try YouTube as well.
But I really don't know how to do it.
My social media has also been private
for almost a year and a half.
He's going to help me come out
and do what I really want to do, but
in LA.
My desire for a show
like Nigella Lawson's
He will help me achieve it.
Hmm.
Rumy, let her go.
Poor kid, for two years,
since the lockdown
she has been sitting at home.
[in English] So, I think
you should tell her yes.
[Alfia] My grandma is someone
She's always told me as a child,
"You kill someone, you come to me."
So my first go-to person was grandma.
-Let her go.
-[in Hindi] You are her mom.
You want me to send my daughter
to LA, America alone?
How will she manage?
[in English] She'll go.
-She will do it.
-[in Hindi] I will have to do it, Dad.
I will never do anything
that will make you all feel
that trusting me was a mistake.
It's easier to discuss sitting
here on the terrace.
Think practically.
When she lives there alone,
how will she manage her insulin
on her own?
-She will manage.
-[Alfia's mom in English] She will do it.
[Alfia] So, I got diabetes
at the age of eight.
So, right now, I'm on insulin,
which I have to take
five to six times a day, and it's fine.
[in Hindi] We all wish
for our kids to succeed.
But to send your daughter alone,
to a new country, is never an easy task.
You need to be very strong for that.
The lifestyle, the parties,
the culture,
everything is different there.
So, we are worried as your parents.
It's easier said than done.
Will you be able to manage on your own?
-Are you sure?
-Yes.
You have to make a promise though.
We shouldn't be worried about your health.
We should be assured that
our daughter is happy and secure.
I also want to go to Goa.
[all laugh]
Alright, go wherever you wish to go.
On one condition. I'll hold your hand,
and you will say, "Let me go."
"Go, Simran, live your life."
Set me up, too, okay?
[dramatic music plays]
[in English] I thought I'd be welcomed
very differently.
You should be happy.
Are you sure you know what
you're getting yourself into?
Do you also need help with wardrobe?
-You keep telling me, "Be a leader!"
-[Hardik speaks indistinctly]
But you don't let me be one.
That's so unfair.
He needs to just chill.
Seriously? What the hell? [chuckles]
That's so hectic.
What pisses me off is
don't defend bullshit.
I've come in a poly bag or what?
[dramatic music fades]
