The Wanderer (2022) s01e02 Episode Script

Abu Dhabi: The Thrill of Adventure

1
In the last episode, I was on the hunt for everything culture in Abu Dhabi.
This time around I'm looking for all the best once in a lifetime adventures the city has to offer.
In true Wanderer fashion, I'm not quite sure where to go or where to start.
But this right here, feels pretty good.
Oh, thank you.
Production have stitched me right up with this one.
I was chilling on the beach minding my own business
and they've sent me skydiving.
Thanks guys!
We are not calm up here.
How are you feeling, Beto?
Man, I'm feeling nervous.
You're feeling nervous?
Look at my hand.
I mean, it's funny,
but it really, really not.
Boom! Banana!
Boom!
Woooo!
Famous last words, Nick?!
Is it?
I mean, you saying that has
instilled so much fear into me.
Mum, dad, brother
I love you.
This is one of those moments where your whole body is filled with anxiety.
My entire life depends on a couple of hooks and a crazy Brazilian man.
Don't go without me!
If he jumps without me
I'll never talk to him again!
My face here says it all.
I'm about to jump out of a flying aircraft 13,000ft in the air.
Nothing can prepare you for this feeling.
Unreal!
That was
honestly incredible.
I'm lost for words.
My hands!
They pay me to do this everyday, man.
This guy's got the best
job in the world.
Unreal!
Thanks for coming.
Thank you guys.
I mean, I was not thanking you
earlier, but wow!
Obviously I've never felt anything
like that before in my life.
Tick that one off the bucket list for sure.
As if that wasn't enough, my instructor Beto told me that if I wanted to find more adrenaline,
I should go to Yas Marina and have a Formula One experience.
I've heard that F1 cars are
notoriously difficult to drive,
so I couldn't quite believe
this was something any tourist
with a driving license could do.
Now, if you want to move
this car is not the same as normal cars.
Keep the clutch down,
raise the revs up to 3000
Add more gas, you need to ride the clutch.
As far as once in a lifetime experiences go, this is right up there. Whether you're a Formula One fan or not,
no one can deny the intense power this V8 engine makes down the straights.
That was insane!
I felt like Lewis Hamilton out there.
That was unreal, honestly!
I'm so sweaty!
What an experience that was.
Honestly, I can't put that into words.
I'm vibrating.
Yas Marina circuit, done!
I've had an amazing last couple of days.
Super high octane, super high energy.
And I'm looking for something that
might be a little bit more slow paced.
Some more kayaking here
in the Eastern Mangroves.
Let's tap and see a review.
Okay, so seek and you will find,
hire a kayak and explore
the flora and fauna
of the eastern mangroves is unlike
freshwater forests, and is a safe
haven for fish and birds alike.
Take your time to wander
amongst the mangroves
and you'll feel properly refreshed.
Now, that sounds absolutely perfect
for what I need.
I need a bit of Zen.
This is where I'm going to go.
Mizan!
How are you doing man?
Good, how about you?
Yeah, good thank you.
So talk to me.
Where are we? What are we doing today?
Basically, we're going into
the mangrove channels now.
Have you got some of them in the UK?
Mangroves?
I don't think so. No, no, no.
Okay.
We've got swamps and we've got bogs
but nothing like this.
Nothing like this mangrove?
No.
I honestly think it's incredible how
one minute you can be
in the middle of a city, hustle and
bustle, shopping centers, big malls,
and then you take a quick car
journey out here
and you're just surrounded
by incredible landscapes, nature.
This is the only part
where I can actually relax.
You'll struggle to find that anywhere
else in the world, you know?
Yeah yeah.
When you come in the early morning,
you will feel the birds,
The birds' sound.
What a way to wake up!
You don't need an alarm clock to wake up
to the natural sound of the birds.
It's beautiful.
It's hard to put into words
what it feels like
to be completely immersed
in this beautiful nature.
Just a short drive outside the city.
But after all the madness in the last
24 hours,
this is exactly what I needed
to reset the body and the mind.
How many kilometers of mangroves
is there?
This is all around in this area,
It's like about ten kilometers.
Ten kilometers?!
Yeah it's the largest one.
Look at that.
Heron!
That was a male, right?
This was the female actually.
I think it's probably about time
we had a race.
You want to race?
I could have a race, yeah!
Alright.
Well done my friend.
Thank you so much.
No problem.
It's been an absolute pleasure.
Thanks very much.
Had a lovely time.
Thank you for coming.
I really hope to see you someday again.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
No problem.
What a place.
Mizan was an amazing guide, with loads of knowledge about the national park and wildlife.
It was so relaxing to get out of the city and enjoy some nature.
So when I'm away,
It's very important for me to keep
my routine to keep me grounded.
And often times when you're traveling,
your eating's out of whack,
your exercise isn't on point.
So for me, running really
clears my head,
gets me reset, moves the body,
and it's just the perfect way to end the day,
a bit of active meditation.
Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, is the biggest indoor theme park in the world,
and one of the top attractions in the city, so I had to check it out.
Feel like I'm a little kid.
Cartoon Junction, Gotham City.
I'm going to go Cartoon Junction
because this is my childhood.
Look at this place!
It's literally like you're inside a cartoon.
I want to live here.
I would actually live here.
Here we go.
Gotham City.
I wonder if we're going to meet Batman.
That was awful.
Awful.
Right.
Let's check out what this
Justice League ride is all about.
If you want to feel like you've been
teleported into the middle of a fight,
into a war, with the entire
Justice League cast
come to this ride
because that was crazy!
Green Lantern.
That was nuts!
If you've never done a
4D experience before,
you've got to try that.
This place is madness.
I mean, if you want to step back in time
and become a kid again
and relive all your childhood
cartoons, films,
then this is the place to go!
Or bring your kids here.
This place is incredible.
So I've just arrived here at island Al Hudayriyat
It is a leisure island,
so I'm told, full of activities.
As you can see we're on a beautiful beach,
there's some food trucks up ahead.
Which I'm very much looking
forward to checking out.
But I'm told there is plenty of things
to do here
so I'm going to find someone to
hopefully point me in the right direction.
Excuse me my friend,
are you alright if I ask you some
questions about the island?
Yeah sure.
It's a good place to change your mood.
Like walk beside the beach
and have a cup of coffee
and maybe chat with friends.
So there's obviously loads of activities
to do here on the island.
Yeah.
What are your top picks?
Most people come for
cycling, jogging, working out.
And there are also grounds for football
and watersports.
You can find them on the beach.
Well thank you.
I know you said cycling so I might take a bike
and have a little play around.
You should definitely try.
Okay, cool.
Thank you, man.
Appreciate it.
Look at this.
How are you bro?
I'm good. Can I join?
Hi.
What's your name?
Voltaire.
Cam.
Nice to meet you bro.
What a spot you've got here man!
Have you played in a skate park before?
I have, like ten years ago I used to do a little bit.
But, I've lost it all so I need you to teach me.
Yeah sure no problem.
Being outdoors, trying various sports and activities is a big part of my life back home.
So this island is fast becoming one of my favourite places in Abu Dhabi.
It's on the beach, the sun is setting, people are playing volleyball, having drinks and dinner.
To me this balance of lifestyle and sport, is spot on.
Now I'm going to
kick flip down eight stairs.
Stairs?!
No, no. I'm only joking
Oh my god!
It's been so long since I've done that.
Did you have fun?
So much fun man!
It's all about fun if you're skating here bro.
Yeah. No, you're,
you're a very good coach.
Thank you so much!
and you're very technical as well.
I really like sharing the experience,
the knowledge that I have.
What a beautiful job to be able to teach kids
and pass on your knowledge and share that passion.
And also be in such a beautiful place as well.
It's so chill.
The vibe here is nice
with the beach, sunset.
It's why some of the customers are coming here to skate.
They go in the beach first, skate,
after dark,
eat some dinner,
then go home and enjoy their life.
You must wake up every day
and just love what you do.
Give me a baby ramp.
Well not a baby ramp but you know
Okay Voltaire.
One, two, three.
What are you doing here Abu Dhabi?
I'm going off local recommendations,
talking to people.
You know, I didn't come here with any agenda
and I'm just going with the flow.
Cool! That's sick!
I never tried travelling alone, actually.
I mean, solo travelling is great.
It's really great?
Yeah.
You can do exactly what you want.
Follow your soul, your passion.
You get a real authentic
take on the place.
I'll think about that though. I will.
I want to visit Europe as well.
When you do, give me a shout
and I can show you around London.
Oh sick, that's nice!
Of course man.
Abu Dhabi has adventure for everyone.
And not only that, it's always the best, the biggest, and the fastest.
Chatting with Voltaire made me realise how fortunate I am to be on this challenge.
Not only because - like my housemate Olu said - I could have ended up in the North Pole,
but because it made me realise how lucky I am to wander and travel.
I genuinely do hope he comes to visit London one day.
So Basith, we're here in the desert.
Yeah. Where are we off to?
Tell me.
The place name
is called Al Khatim.
Al Khatim. Yeah.
And what are we doing there?
Dune bashing.
Dune bashing?
Okay. I feel like you're starting already
Basith, have you ever rolled the car?
I can see you've got a roll cage here.
Not yet. Not yet.
Are you trying to?
Oh, my God.
This is definitely one
way to get to camels.
Basith, so this is where you call
home? It is absolutely stunning.
It's beautiful.
Does this view ever get old for you?
It's always changing because of the wind.
It's almost similar to the sea waves.
So every day you wake up,
it looks different?
Yeah, of course. It's absolutely stunning.
I can't say
I've ever been anywhere like this before.
Okay.
Etihad, be gentle.
Wow.
We're a lot higher than I thought
I would be.
Oh, my God,
the views from up here are insane.
I like what Basith said about the dunes changing everyday with the wind,
and it made me think about how the views never look the same.
Every morning the Bedouins would wake up and see something completely different.
How they found their way around in this place as it was constantly changing is still a mystery to me.
When I'm up here,
it's crazy to think
that this is the main mode of transport
or this was the main mode of transport
for thousands of years for the people
here in the UAE
and just how much of a beautiful
but tough grind it must have been.
And to navigate your way
around these dunes that are forever changing.
I don't know how the people did it.
It's a lot more gentle than I'd anticipated.
I thought it'd be a lot rougher,
but it's a smooth ride.
I could stay up here for hours.
I'm in a very reflective state of mind
whilst being out here in the desert.
It's so peaceful and calm.
And it's made me think about the journey
I've been on since
first arriving here in Abu Dhabi.
All of the experiences, friendships,
the food have been out of this world.
And I came here
with only one goal in mind,
which was to create my own travel guide.
But I've achieved so much more than that.
I've seen the city from a bird's eye
view while skydiving.
I've seen the beautiful architecture
of the Louvre,
the Grand Mosque.
I've tasted some of the most exquisite
cuisine I've ever had in my life.
And I've learned so much
about the people here
and the love and admiration
they have for their country and their city.
And the land, the animals, the community
it's beautiful.
It's made me reflect on
that taking the beaten
path isn't always a good idea.
Sometimes it's good to go off-piste
and experience things
you never thought you would.
Although it's sad
that this journey has come to an end.
I really feel like I've left
part of myself here, but I feel like I'm
also taking something away with me
and I cannot wait to share my travel guide
and my recommendations
with my friends and family.
