Together: Treble Winners (2024) s01e02 Episode Script

Episode 2

1
-[pacing footsteps]
-[Pep] They kick, you kick more.
They run, you run more.
We have to take responsibility!
You have to feel it!
Otherwise, for nothing!
-[traffic rumbles]
-[siren wails]
-[bird singing]
-[players shouting in distance]
[Silva] I can't see what's happening.
Where's my good team?
We go out. No.
[imitating English accent]
Jumper. Sweater.
[Pep] Guys, welcome back to everyone.
We're going to talk a little bit
the way we have to make
a buildup against United.
[poignant music playing]
[Winter] To understand the rivalry between
Manchester United and Manchester City,
you have to be a historian.
[commentator] It's a dream day
for Manchester City.
The T-shirt says it all.
[Winter] You have to be a psychologist.
You have to be
probably a therapist as well
because it is absolutely ferocious.
You had that amazing period
of United dominance,
and then City,
who were a coming force since 2008,
have now taken over,
and City fans
have absolutely loved the fact
that while they've been winning trophies,
United have been trying
to pick themselves up
after the incredible era
they had under Alex Ferguson.
[music intensifies]
[Pep] In front of the opponents
we're going to face,
always expect the best quality.
There's no doubt about that.
[Haaland] It's a derby. It means a lot,
so you have to be ready for this game.
If the striker is here, you go there!
The stadium will be full,
and they will support us, behind us,
and of course
they know we're going to do our best.
I'm looking forward, anyway.
Out of shot, you'll see be able
to see the City
When you've got a team
like Manchester United,
with all their history and all their pride
and a new coach in Erik ten Hag,
it on so many levels,
it was going to be the derby of derbies.
[commentator] It is a special day.
There is nothing quite like
a Manchester derby.
[man] Come on, boys.
Come on, boys. Come on!
-[Carson] Be ruthless. Come on.
-Right, come here, guys. Close. Vale.
[players murmur]
[murmurs quieten to silence]
[crowd cheering, whistling]
[chanting] City! City! City! City!
[chanting fades to silence]
[Pep] Look at each other, guys.
Look at each other.
Look each other, guys.
Look your eyes.
Look each other.
[rhythmic tapping]
[Pep] Let's go?
Yeah? Yes or no?
[players] Yeah. Come on. Come on!
-[players shouting]
-[dynamic music playing]
[commentator 1] The players in the tunnel.
The atmosphere building.
I felt like we was fully focused
in that game,
and, from the second the whistle went,
we looked right at it,
and we put 'em under pressure
very early on.
[commentator 2] Quite a setting.
Quite a rivalry.
And a fiery couple of hours lies ahead.
[commentator 1] City are clicking
through the gears here.
The cross comes in from Bernardo.
Foden! 1-0!
Absolutely brilliant start!
Phil Foden. First goal against United,
and boy, is he enjoying it.
[fans singing]
[commentator 1] City's corner comes in.
Haaland off the line. Did it cross?
-[pundit] Goal.
-[commentator 1] Yes, it did. 2-0, City!
And Haaland's first chance in the game
inevitably goes into the net.
The goal machine is clicking again.
On it goes to De Bruyne.
City have men over here.
-De Bruyne. Haaland! 3-0.
-[cheering]
City is just playing at this level.
It was amazing.
[commentator 1] And so far,
United have not had a single attempt.
I think the game itself
should motivate you.
Everyone wants to win a derby.
[commentator 1] Haaland now,
up against Lindelof.
Plays it in. 4-0!
-[fans cheering]
-[commentator 1] 4-0!
Absolutely brilliant from City.
[Pep] 4-0. I cannot say it's bad,
but it's not perfect.
Against team Manchester United,
you have to drive more.
Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go!
[Pep exhales deeply]
You were brilliant, but I push you all
to be more perfect, guys.
I push you to be more perfect.
[dynamic music continues]
[commentator 1] De Bruyne skips forward,
onto Grealish.
Dalot in front of him.
Gomez on his overlap,
goes inside to De Bruyne.
Inside. Haaland! 5-1.
Hat trick, Erling Haaland.
[City fans singing]
Turns, keeps on going,
Haaland, on to Foden.
Foden! 6-1!
[Caldeira] I mean, Haaland,
three goals and two assists.
Foden, the local boy, the local supporter,
to do that in a derby
First hat trick against Man United,
at home as well,
I don't think
it gets much better than that, so
It definitely sticks out for one
of my best memories in a City shirt.
[interviewer] Who is gonna
take the match ball home?
I think Erling's won enough, an't he?
So I was like, "Erl, come on, mate.
Give me a match ball for once."
You know, "You're used to this."
You get it at nearly every game. [laughs]
-We'll get one each, no?
-I think we have to.
One ball for the first half,
one for the second.
[laughs] We, uh We got one ball each. Uh
Also for him,
what a crazy experience for him. Uh
As a As a Mancunian,
it must've been a crazy feeling for him,
uh but also for me, really special.
We smashed them at home, uh
and it was it was so nice.
I want to take a picture
all together, guys.
We have to celebrate that.
Guys, can you take my picture
on my phone, please?
-Guys, all together here.
-[players cheering]
City! City! City!
City! City! City!
City! City! City!
Bravo, guys!
[reporter] An incredible afternoon
at the Etihad.
The highest-scoring
Manchester derby of all time.
Phil Foden and Erling Haaland
both got hat tricks.
They're back to within a point
of Arsenal at the top of the table.
They're scary. They're scary to face.
[woman] Hi.
Hey, John!
[Silva mutters]
[Silva and Ines speak Spanish]
[sprightly music playing]
[Silva] This is John.
He was named after John Stones,
my big friend John Stones.
I think it suits him.
He's a beautiful boy. Intelligent.
[dog pants]
[indistinct chatter]
-Hello.
-[Ines] Oh my God. I can't believe it!
[producer] Why the name Charles,
and not maybe Kyle?
[laughs] Maybe Kyle.
Yeah, that would've been a good one,
to be fair.
No, Charles because, uh
he came from from Wales,
and Charles, yeah,
King Charles, so Charles, yeah.
-[woman] This is his paperwork for you.
-[Ines] Oh! He's your brother!
I was nervous because I didn't know
how my other dog John would react
'cause he's a bit jealous always.
[they chat in Spanish]
-[Rodri speaks Spanish]
-[Silva] Let's bring him inside.
[excited chatter]
-Hi!
-He looks so nervous.
[woman] This is your new best friend.
Yeah?
The first few days, I thought,
"What have I done?" They hate each other.
-[sprightly music continues]
-[dogs pant and yap]
The other, John would bite him
'cause of food.
The other one would be scared
and sleep under chairs
and under the couch.
And then for a few days I was thinking,
"I shouldn't have done this,"
and now they just love each other.
It's perfect.
So, yeah, it was tough the first days,
but now it's really good.
Let me say thank you.
Thank you for everything.
No problem.
-[Ines] He's gonna be so loved, really.
-[Silva] Don't get jealous, huh?
[commentator 1] The games
coming thick and fast.
Haaland's there again! Álvarez!
[commentator 2] Well, City,
impressive yet again.
[Pep] Southampton is
an important fixture for us.
[commentator 3] Cancelo. And still!
[commentator 4] And City will move
to the top of the Premier League table.
Another quite brilliant performance.
[man] Back pass.
[coach] If you don't do one,
you do five push-ups for me, okay?
[producer] This season, we seem
to have seen a really playful side of you,
if you don't mind me saying,
on the training pitch in particular.
No, I'm just enjoying it, to be honest.
[coach] You fly today.
[cheering and laughter]
[indistinct shouting]
The main thing is
that just, whenever you come in,
I enjoy it straightaway.
It's not just the team, it's the staff.
Every time when you may be a bit sad,
when you come back in the building,
straightaway you are happy
because, you know,
it's the football banter, the
the jokes,
the staff is so good with each other.
[players yelling]
[Gedra] You get a positive feeling
from this group.
You need to have this collective mindset,
on and off the pitch.
[in Spanish] Those moments of chatting,
of having fun and jokes.
Then when we have to work,
we work as well,
but that helps us
to have a good time here every day
and that's why it's great
to live in the world of City.
-[player] Oh, you're not handing Hey.
-Olé!
Even though I'm I'm probably
one of the quietest players
that we have on the squad, um
I think, from time to time,
it's it's nice to
to live these kind of moments.
Champions again, guys.
I'm enjoying being the captain,
I'm enjoying to be a Man City player,
you know, to be with this
with this group of lads.
[laughing] It was you? It was you?
-It wasn't me.
-Why you lyin', bro?
-It was John. [laughs]
-Aye! It was him, innit?
[producer] What's all the wrestling about?
[laughs]
I I D'you know what?
I don't even know what it was.
I think the one with Gündo was
we was just walkin' out one day,
and he looked tired,
and I was like, "You all right, Gündo?"
Morning, pal.
He's like, "A bit tired."
I went, "You need to wrestle.
Let's have a wrestle."
[laughter]
[laughter]
To be fair to him,
he was a bit stronger than I expected.
I thought, "Oh,
he's gonna be tapping out in a minute,"
but he had a little bit, to be fair.
[laughter, shouting]
[Gündoğan] Scott keeps asking me
before every training session now
if I want another wrestle, you know?
But it was a bit wet
and windy the last few weeks,
so I suggested that we will do it
when the weather is a bit better.
-I did well! You didn't expect it?
-Yeah, you're strong.
-Good warm-up, that.
-Yeah. Oh, I'm warm now!
There's some really tough times
that come within a season,
and from the outside, people think
well, because you have talent,
you'll achieve it,
but history shows
that there's so many clubs out there
where they have good players,
but they don't have that harmony
and the unity to go out
and be successful together.
But as far as Man City goes,
the players, the staff,
everybody's pulling in the same direction,
and they actually like each other,
which I promise you goes a long, long way.
[mellow music playing]
[metallic jingling]
The ice cream machine is here!
[commentator] Mahrez against Grabara.
And Grabara saves it!
City down to ten, Sergio Gomez sent off,
but Manchester City
have another clean sheet.
They stay unbeaten.
[music ends]
[players shouting in distance]
[Haaland] Nice ball!
I've gotta bring it in.
-Make sure you put it on Ben more than me.
-[Ben laughs]
-'Cause he loves the attention.
-Behave.
[Foden] Ben, talk us through
what you're doing today.
-Don't put me on the spot, Phil.
-Come on, talk us through it.
[producer] You're doing my job for me.
He's got an inflamed fat pad in his heel.
A bit sore and a bit angry,
but it's a lot better than what it was.
What time's your first commercial?
I think around one.
[Ben] Ronnie in, um nursery?
-[Foden] Yeah.
-I was half expecting him to come in.
-[Foden] Did you?
-Yeah. [laughs]
I think he might be coming in later
for a photo anyways.
-Is he?
-Yeah.
So who Is he signing or who is?
-[laughter]
-Sign here. Pen to paper.
It's him signing, no?
He's gonna be better than you!
I know, he will be.
Hopefully. That's the aim.
[reporter] Breaking news this hour,
and good news for Manchester City
as they prepare to go
to Anfield on Sunday,
live on Sky Sports,
because Phil Foden has signed
a contract extension
with the Premier League champions.
[Blackburn] He is a boyhood City fan,
and I think there's nothing fans like more
than seeing one of their own players
come through the academy to become a star.
I think he was awarded
not only because of his talent,
but also for his patience.
City fans will enjoy him
for a lot more years to come,
and you feel there's a lot more gears
he can go through.
He's got, uh He's got that much talent.
[indistinct chatter]
[Foden] Come on, Ronnie. Come on.
Come and get in now.
I know you've been dying to.
-Come round here to me.
-[woman] Come on, Ronnie.
[Foden] Come on, we're getting a photo.
Come on.
This way.
True.
[camera shutters clicking]
-[photographer] Got it.
-[laughter]
Are you seeing him waving?
[woman] Have you got a camera?
It's terrible.
[Foden] Hiya, mate. Do you want this?
[Rebecca] gonna get that
all down his T-shirt.
[Haaland] Ronnie.
[laughter and chatter]
Ronnie, let me see your watch. Come on.
[Foden] Go and show him.
Show Erl your watch.
Get up! No!
[woman] Close one.
[Foden] Look at that for a save.
Whose is that?
Sorry Ben, I had to use your napkin, lad.
[players shouting]
-Honestly, you deserve it.
-Thank you.
-I'm proud of you.
-Cheers.
Vale.
[player] Harder, Cole. Whiz it into him.
Any trip to Anfield
for any team is gonna be tough.
[Gedra] Whether Liverpool is at their best
or not,
it's just bigger than
what the table can show you.
-[music playing]
-[players shouting]
[Pep] Yes, now! Bravo, Kevin!
That is the ball.
That is the ball, guys.
You know they are high.
Let's put the ball to the runners.
[indistinct shouting]
[Maresca] We play many times.
This opponent,
we face more in the last years,
the rival to compete for all the titles,
and we just talk, talk, talk about us,
what we have to do.
[Pep] Guys, the last two games we played
against them were a shame. You know that.
Who remembers them?
It's already forgotten.
This game, tomorrow, will be forgotten.
Because winning is fine.
Winning games is fine,
but that's not the point.
The point is wanting to win the game.
This is the point.
The point is never give up.
This is the point.
And do it together. This is the point.
We don't win,
tomorrow it will be forgotten.
The plan? You know what is the plan.
But what happen out there,
you have to solve it.
Don't wait in the halftime.
Don't wait tomorrow.
When I see the game,
what you should do.
If you have a problem, solve it.
Because these stages deserve that.
The best of you.
Win, win, win, yeah. Wanting to win.
Wanting to win,
and I know from the first minute
when you're wanting to win.
[crowd cheering]
[commentator 1] It is a fixture which has
grown into one of the great rivalries
in English football.
This is, has been, and will remain
one of the great challenges for the Blues.
[muffled crowd noise
and music from stadium]
[crowd singing grows louder]
[commentator 2] You write off Liverpool
at your peril,
and no one knows that better
than Pep Guardiola.
[commentator 1] If City can emerge here
from a packed and raucous Anfield,
this will be
a quite phenomenal statement of intent.
[commentator 2] There's De Bruyne,
Haaland just pulling away.
There he is! It's that combination.
[commentator 1] Oh, hang on.
The offside flag stays down.
Salah's through on goal here.
Mo Salah has put it wide!
You can't believe it.
It was a brilliant save.
Ederson's got his fingertips to it.
City might be in here!
Good save by Alisson.
Foden! And it's in! City have scored!
[fans cheering]
[interviewer] How do you feel
about the goal taken off of you?
[scoffs softly]
Uh
[Gary Neville] Now Pep's going mad.
[crowd booing]
[commentator 2] For City,
jubilation turning to big frustration.
-[crowd yelling]
-[whistle blows]
[commentator 1] It's gonna get ruled out.
It's gonna be 0-0.
Very disappointed, frustrating.
[commentator 1] Free kick
taken by De Bruyne.
It's deep, and Alisson just claims it.
And looks up
to try and get Liverpool forward.
A long, long goal kick,
and Salah's got away!
Salah's through on goal!
-And scores!
-[crowd cheering]
And Liverpool are in front,
and can you believe
the way in which it's come about?
[pundit] You talk about different ways
to win a game or to create opportunities.
Route-one football.
[commentator 1] Liverpool have ended
City's unbeaten start to the season.
[Pep] This is the way
I like my team to play.
You were brilliant.
They shout, you shout more.
They kick, you kick more.
They run, you run more.
We did everything,
in this stadium with this team.
You behaved like you behaved.
It's learning for the future.
When we train in games,
when we train that,
we have to take responsibility!
You have to feel it!
Otherwise, for nothing!
It's football.
How I can complain
about your performance, guys?
In this stadium everybody behaved.
In Community Shield, you play like this?
[thud]
'Ey, two days off, guys. Rest and peace.
And we see each other on Wednesday. Dale.
[Gary Neville] If you're Arsenal today,
if you're the teams in the league,
you recognize
that this is an important moment.
I think that we think
that this is probably one
of the only teams that could beat City.
They've done it.
We've seen a pretty special day today.
[electronic string chord plays]
[producer] The Yashin award.
What's it like to be considered
with all of the great goalkeepers
in the world?
-You're one of them.
-[chuckles]
So the Ballon d'Or is a bit of Hollywood
in the football season, isn't it?
The players go there,
there is a red carpet, they dress well.
Then you have those sought-after awards.
In Ederson,
it's very clear that Manchester City
have one of the best goalkeepers
in his generation.
[Blackburn] Ederson would probably
back himself to win the main award,
wouldn't he, as a footballer?
I think he likes to think of himself
as an outfield player
as well as a goalkeeper.
[in Portuguese] It is
an individual achievement,
but if it were not a collective work,
it would not be possible.
So enjoy tonight and have fun.
We are leaving in five minutes.
-[producer] You need me to help you?
-Yeah!
[producer] Ha-ha-ha! Love it!
Right, hang on.
[in Portuguese] That's a tough job for me.
[laughs]
[producer] Windsor.
That's what they call it, I think.
You're not used to wearing a tie?
-[quietly] No.
-[producer] No.
[Ederson] Yesterday, it's easy.
I keep calm,
focus on the game, concentrate.
It's confidence.
But today, it's not too much. [laughs]
[producer] Let's go.
[indistinct chatter]
[in Portuguese] Hey, handsome!
[upbeat music playing]
[muffled chatter and shouting]
[music fades]
[commentator 1] It's De Bruyne! Yes!
[cheering]
[commentator 2] Oh!
[commentator 1] Manchester City
defying belief.
[Neville] It's a mesmerizing finish
to this game, to this season.
-[fans cheering and singing]
-[Neville] Honestly.
[fans singing]
[applause]
[Didier Drogba] Ladies and gentlemen,
for Manchester City, the club of the year,
Mr. Ferran Soriano, general director,
Txiki Begiristain, technical director,
Ederson, the goalkeeper,
and the playmaker, Kevin De Bruyne.
[applause]
[De Bruyne] Good evening, everybody.
I think I've been there for eight years.
I've come to a family
who wants to play in a philosophy
of making people entertained
[De Bruyne yells]
and it's been exciting.
[Drogba] How important
is the Pep project in the club?
[Begiristain] He's just brilliant.
He's in constant evolution.
There is always something new.
[Soriano] From the ownership,
the chairman, the board,
our talented football director,
our amazing players, men and women,
and everybody that works at the club,
we have enjoyed the ride so far,
but we also know that the next game
is always the more challenging one.
[words echo, fade out]
-[birds singing]
-[players shouting]
[producer] Extra luggage today?
What's it called? What's it called?
"Work clever, not hard"?
[producer chuckles]
[indistinct shouting]
-Eighteen.
-Nineteen.
-Twenty.
-You said eighteen!
[cheering]
No, no. He don't do this. He goes
[Birmingham accent] "You're o-right?
You're o-right?"
-[Mancunian accent] "Y'ah-right?"
-"Y'ah-right?"
-You were here or away?
-Huh?
-Here or away?
-No. Here.
Here?
-[indistinct] in Manchester.
-I was gonna go Marbella.
You have to invite Jack to Marbella.
-He did.
-I did.
[indistinct]
[Haaland inhales]
-Zen. Zen.
-[they laugh]
[producer] Talk to me about
the bonsai tree.
[laughs]
[producer] Why did it appear?
Um
[meditative music playing]
[Stones] Erling wanted it.
He thought it'd be nice
for the physio room.
The bonsai loves humidity,
so I gotta bring it in the office
to get some humidity, innit?
[Stones] We used to give it
a steam room sometimes.
Erling's suggestion.
I'm kind of having
a bit of responsibility for the bonsai,
to wet it well,
give it the water it needs, feed it.
Bonsai plant food. [laughs]
Get the right light and everything.
Everyone kinda bought into it as well,
and it was in there, bit decorative.
Everyone took care of it.
And it became a thing where
if you came in and you'd not done it,
you'd be a bit angry with yourself.
You gotta water the bonsai.
Look at that.
The bonsai tree,
that's exactly where we get energy from.
We just drag the energy
out from the bonsai,
and brings it into the body.
It's a tree that brings us good luck,
so we joke a lot with that one.
-Zen. Zen.
-[they laugh]
[interviewer] You often say it's important
to see how your team reacts
after a defeat.
What have you seen
in training this week, and
I just focus about how good they are,
our opponent.
I was really impressed, the way
they played, so the past is the past.
It's already forgotten,
and of course we take the lesson,
on and off the pitch.
Liverpool is history.
You focus always in the past,
you'll lose the focus in the future,
in the present, the future,
and this is the first step to drop points.
[electronic music playing]
[shouting and cheering]
[Dias] Come on, boys. Come on, boys.
Back to winning ways. Come on!
[commentator] Ederson looking to release
that ball into Erling Haaland.
He's got it too. Erling Haaland!
[fans cheering]
It's Bernardo Silva
who goes down in the penalty area.
-Haaland!
-[fans cheering]
Normal service is resumed
for Manchester City.
Bernardo Silva keeps going.
Back out it goes to De Bruyne!
[fans cheering]
[music ends]
[interviewer] What was going
through your head when you scored?
You seemed to have so much time
at the top of the box.
[De Bruyne] I get the ball from Bernardo
and look through the options,
and I think, you know,
I was in quite some space,
so I tried the shot,
and yeah, it went in perfectly.
[interviewer] And can you tell us how
you got your black eye? It looks painful.
I think the day before, I had a, like
uh, a ball, and it, like, slit my eye,
and a couple of minutes later, I was like
couldn't really open my eye anymore.
I was like, "What's going on?"
and I look in the mirror after training,
it was like a full, full black eye.
So I thought it would be funny,
and I think I discussed it
with somebody at home,
and yeah, then I scored,
so I did it, and it was just funny.
[producer] It was described as
"Kevin De Bruyne's emo phase."
'Cause it looked like you had eyeliner on
at the time.
The bruise was that strange, but
I was going through a little phase,
you know. Don't judge me.
And in the final, I broke my nose
and my cheekbone.
-It didn't even look
-Nothing.
Nothing, and now it looks like this.
[Pep] First,
I wanna tell who I didn't tell
congratulation for qualification
for the last 16.
Second one is I wanna tell you that
that we have to fight
to finish first. Okay?
We can finish first,
and the second leg here in Etihad Stadium,
we are incredible strong, guys.
It's much, much better. Okay?
Play like you are.
I saw you in the warm-up.
I saw you there and strong there.
You are focused, and that's good.
I saw you because I see immediately
when you are ready or not ready.
I know you are ready.
[producer] Morning.
Who cares about the pictures?
Me. Me.
[De Bruyne] I know,
but you're a businessman.
[interviewer] You've played three games
against Borussia Dortmund
with Edin Terzić at the helm
in the last one and a half years,
and they have given you
quite a run for your money
in all of the three games.
[Pep] We have a lot of respect of them,
and we know
that we have to play in our best
to to beat them.
[table tennis balls pinging]
[Mahrez] Corner.
-Oh!
-Come on! Come on!
-You watch it! You watched it.
-[laughter]
-You watched that.
-No, I didn't.
-[producer] That defied gravity!
-[Mahrez] I didn't see sh
Nathan is good, and Rodri.
That's the true word just behind them.
Come on! Come on!
Come on!
