I'm just jealous of you guys.
Delicious.
Okay, there you go.
Okay, zip it up for me, baby.
Joy: My husband and I, we're Southern baptists.
We were raising our children in church.
And we both had solid careers.
Our children were healthy.
Have a good day.
All right, baby? Bye, girls! We had a good life.
It was a busy time in my life.
I was tired of juggling all the responsibilities.
I needed a break.
I just wanted to get away.
JAMIE: She told me that her and some of her friends were planning a little girls' night out, and I actually encouraged it.
[ SCREAMS .]
JAMIE: She needed some time to herself, and I was glad she was actually going.
Joy: Three of my friends and I decided to go away for a trip to a plantation.
Perfect.
We walked around the grounds taking pictures during the day.
It was like stepping back in time where we were staying.
They said, during the tour, that there were numerous spirits at the plantation.
The main spirit was murdered on the back porch.
Aah! [ GRUNTS .]
Aah! Great.
Here, let me see.
Joy: But we really weren't interested in that.
We kind of joked about it.
We kept going back and forth taking pictures Just having fun.
[ SIGHS .]

Bye! All right, all right.
Bye.
Be safe! I know.
You guys, too.
All right.
Bye! Bye! We had a good time.
We really enjoyed it.
And we didn't realize anything bad had happened until I got home.
Aah! And that's when it all really started.
JAMIE: When Joy got back home, she started looking through the photos.
See that? Oh.
It looks good.
I like that.
You did a good job.
I know.
And then, see right But then we realized she had something kind of weird on the photos.
Joy: There was the weirdest thing, the oddest thing.
It was a face.
And then, on closer inspection, I saw another face.
It was the same face in a different area.
It shocked me.
I felt a little twinge of fear that I had possibly had an encounter with something evil and wasn't aware of it.
JAMIE: These pictures were actually just the very beginning of a real nightmare.
Almost immediately after her trip to this plantation, things started happening.
Joy: It was Thanksgiving day.
And we put the kids to bed, and Jamie and I stayed up.
So cute! Yeah.
What is that? A little fish.
Yeah, a fish.
[ LAUGHS .]
I think it fits you.
[ LAUGHING .]
Yeah.
No.
Let me see.
Come here.
Pumpkin, come here.
GIRL: Aah! Joy: We heard my 2-year-old screaming Came from her bedroom.
Hey, hey.
Everything's okay, all right? When I went in there, she said there was a mean man in her room.
I thought she had heard us talking about the pictures, and she was just feeding off of that.
No one's in your room.
Everything's okay.
It's just us.
Good night.
The night terrors went on for about a month Solid.
Aah! Aah! [ SIGHS .]
JAMIE: I wasn't overly concerned about it.
I'm thinking, "Well, this is just a 2-year-old.
" She's just having bad dreams.
" You're gonna sleep good tonight.
We got Mr.
bunny rabbit right here, huh? Look at that.
Your favorite.
I thought that she would eventually just get over it.
Okay, good night.
Joy: I couldn't decide if it was real or not.
My 2-year-old kept insisting that there was a mean man in her room.
And then I experienced something myself.
My husband, Jamie, works away from home.
He's only home on the weekends, so I'm alone with my daughters during the week.
I laid down in the bed one night, and I was just exhausted.
Before I drifted off to sleep, I heard my bedroom door slowly open, as if a child was tentatively seeing if she could sneak in my bed.
I opened both eyes and focused.
The door was completely open Wide open.
[ FLOORBOARDS CREAK .]
I couldn't see anything.
I was terrified.
[ GASPING .]
And then I saw the face from the pictures of the plantation.
[ GASPING .]
Aah! Joy: When I realized that the face that I was seeing in my house was the face from the pictures, I knew I had brought something back from the plantation.
[ GASPING .]
I saw a face floating.
[ GASPING .]
My mind was racing with ideas of what this could be.
It couldn't be real.
There's no way possible this could happen.
I just laid there in the bed and watched this face go by me.
[ GASPING .]
I felt guilt that I had brought something home that was scaring my children and terrorizing me, as well.
I think the pictures somehow awakened that evil spirit.
When my husband finally came home from work, the household was very tense.
Everybody was tense.
I did become concerned because I was gone so much and I saw things happening I just wasn't comfortable with.
It was really, really starting to get a grip on my family.
Joy: The situation had escalated to the point that my 2-year-old was wearing sunglasses at night to sleep so she couldn't see anything.
That was her mode of survival.
The next incident happened two weeks later with my husband in the bed with me.
[ GASPS .]
This paralyzing pressure came over me.
[ GROANING, GASPING .]
I could not move my feet, arms, legs, anything.
[ GASPING .]
This face that I had seen in my doorway was hovering over me.
But I was able to move one arm and reach over and get my husband awake.
JAMIE: I looked over at her and I realized that she is being held down.
Get up, baby.
[ GASPING .]
Get up.
Get up.
I tried to move her.
It felt like I was lifting a large man.
[ GASPING, GROANING .]
I didn't know what to do at that point but pray.
[ GASPING, SCREAMING .]
Save our family, dear lord, please.
[ COUGHING .]
[ BREATHING HEAVILY .]
Oh, my god.
Baby.
Baby.
Oh, honey.
It's gonna be okay, baby.
But once he said a prayer and the thing left, I cried in his arms that night, and I said, "Something is in our house.
" We just didn't know what to expect.
We didn't know what was gonna happen next.
So do you think you can help us? Yes.
Yes.
We had tried every religion, just about, for help.
And then I got to thinking, you know, in the movies, they always ask that the catholic priest come in.
So we sought one out that came from New Orleans, and he came out and blessed the house.
He sprinkled holy water and prayed over it.
But he acted a little bit scared.
He told me the house was clean.
And he quickly left.
Joy: Hope you guys are hungry.
Brawk, brawk, brawk.
[ LAUGHS .]
Joy: I thought things were better and calm when he left, but they weren't.
In the beginning of the evening, we were having our dinner.
Everything was fine Going normal.
[ LAUGHS .]
And then, all of a sudden, like a switch had been turned on Good right now? Honey, green beans for you.
Come on.
[ LAUGHS .]
Hey, are you okay? Honey? Sweetie, are you all right? Hey, look at me.
What's the matter? Joy: Her face was changed.
Her eyes looked different.
I could tell it was not my child.
[ GRUNTING .]
Joy: My husband realized immediately that this was no temper tantrum.
[ GRUNTS .]
stop it! He carried her in on his shoulders, and she was drooling, foaming at the mouth.
You could not calm her down.
You could not reason with her.
Calm down, baby.
Calm down.
JAMIE: As a father, it made me feel helpless to see what was happening and not be able to do anything about it.
It seemed like everything I tried wasn't working.
[ SCREAMING .]
It really blew my mind that this could happen.
It's gonna be okay.
[ GRUNTING STOPS .]
[ BREATHING HEAVILY .]
All right.
All right.
Okay.
All right, baby.
She gradually started to calm down.
I could question her about it.
It's okay.
Are you okay? It's okay.
JAMIE: What happened, honey? I don't know.
Joy: She did not remember anything.
You don't remember that? That's okay.
That's okay.
Get some rest.
Everything's okay.
We're here.
All right.
All right? Joy: We were just making her more agitated, and we were scared she was gonna hurt herself, so we gave her a break.
Try to get some sleep, okay? Okay.
We love you.
Good night.
What do you think's going on? I don't know, baby.
I don't know.
But we're gonna find out.
I've just never seen our daughter like that.
We'll talk to the doctor tomorrow, see if we can't get some help.
It's not your fault.
[ SNIFFLES .]
We were in a desperate situation.
I didn't feel like any of us were safe.
Mom, dad.
Aah! Joy: What was a supposed to be a girls' night out of fun turned into something Aah! bad in my home.
[ SCREAMING .]
I had brought evil home with me from the plantation.
Mom, dad.
Aah! Oh, my god! Who did this to you?! What is this? I don't know.
She raised her arm and she said to us, "What is this on my arm? What does it mean?" No! I didn't do anything! JAMIE: Why won't this stop?! The thing carved on her arm It was demonic.
It was the satanic cross with a trident on top of it.
What did you do? What did you do? I didn't do anything! I swear! I questioned her repeatedly how it got on her arm, and she said that it was a stinging sensation, and then it just appeared.
[ CRYING .]
JAMIE: It's okay.
We're gonna get you to the E.
R.
it's okay.
I started praying because I realized this was something I could not battle myself.
[ SOBBING .]
oh, god.
Please, god! Please! Please! Please! I ended up getting pushed down into the ground.
[ GASPING .]
I felt the heaviness on my chest.
[ GROANING .]
Come on.
Fight it, baby! Fight it! I can't! Get up! You can do it, baby! Come on! And my face was pinned to the ground for several minutes.
[ CRYING .]
oh, my god.
JAMIE: Felt like we were losing control of everything.
I felt, in my mind, that I could handle it physically.
And I know now that you can't.
I felt like it was killing me slowly because I kept falling into every trap it laid.
[ BOTH CRYING .]
It's okay.
I started realizing that god was the only thing that was gonna get us through this.
After that, we had got stronger in our Christian faith, but I still didn't want to live with it.
We decided to move.
Are you sure you want to do this? JAMIE: As we were packing up and moving out of the house, you could tell something was angry.
[ GLASS SHATTERS .]
aah! Joy: The light bulbs exploded as we were moving the last bit of furniture out.
I was concerned that the evil entity might try to follow us.
But, at this point, we'd had spiritual control over it.
Good does overcome evil.
JAMIE: That place there's something about that place that's definitely Evil.
It opened a door that should have been left closed.
We went from a perfectly happy family to almost completely torn apart, and with god's grace, we're back together all happy Great family again.
Joy: It's not hard to tell people about my experience.
I can talk with anyone about it, whether they believe me or not.
They need to know this can really happen to an all-American family.
My name is Jules V.
Ness, and I can tell you that evil does not die.
Aah! We have got to get out of here.
Aah! It is not safe for us.
Sometimes it lays dormant and just waits Aah! till you're weak for a moment, and then it comes back.
It was the summer of 1980.
I was young, newly married, very much in love with my husband.
I would have moved anywhere that he wanted to go.
I had a 6-month-old baby.
And my husband's family had a home located in Lennox that his mother had just inherited from her mother.
The house had been in the family for generations, and she wanted to know if we were interested in buying it.
So, here it is.
Wow.
It was a big l-shaped home An old staircase, two bedrooms upstairs, big downstairs, over 100 years old, very old-fashioned, but it was beautiful.
I mean, I know it needs a lot of work, but I'm excited about it.
I think it's great.
Yeah.
There's a lot of house.
FINCHER: I remember hearing bits and pieces of the stories from the house as a young child.
My mom told me they did not know anything about the house.
They just knew that it was in the family and they wanted to keep it there.
NESS: His mother had told us that she was having trouble keeping renters there.
It was a huge opportunity for me and my husband, so we grabbed at the chance.
Huh? I felt the house was very charming That, with a little work, it would be a beautiful place we could spend our lives in.
But even when we moved in, it felt like things weren't quite right.
The first thing that I thought was odd was, we had the outside painted by an older couple that lived in Lennox.
It was very hot outside, and I felt sorry for them working out in the sun.
Do you guys want to come in for something cold to drink? It must be 100 degrees out here.
No, thanks, ma'am.
We're fine.
MAN: No, thanks.
Are you sure? It's really hot out here.
We're not going in that house.
NESS: They did not tell me why they wouldn't come in.
But she made it very clear she would not come into that house.
[ WOMAN SCREAMS .]
Once we purchased the place, we felt it would be a forever home for us especially since it had been in his family for so many generations.
But things were happening, and we were starting to have mixed emotions about what we had done.
It was early summer, and it was a very hot summer when we moved in.
My dad worked construction, so he was away from the home a lot.
So my mom spent a lot of time there by herself.
[ BABY FUSSING .]
NESS: I was unpacking.
My son was sleeping in his playpen.
All of a sudden, an ice-cold wind came racing down the upstairs.
And it was so cold, it chilled me.
It was not like a normal cold breeze.
It was something different.
It felt like it went through me.
But there was no explanation.
The cold air definitely had come from nowhere.
It was very strange, but I needed to finish unpacking.
I had this huge German bowl.
It was very heavy.
I only used it occasionally, so I just wanted to store it somewhere in the back of the cupboard, out of sight.
I got up on the chair and pushed it all the way to the back of the shelf.
Aah! I had shoved it all the way to the back of the cupboard.
There was no way that bowl could have fallen out of that shelf on its own.
That scared me.
It was a like a warning of what to come.
We had been up late, it was Friday, and we had gone to bed about midnight.
[ FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING .]
I heard heavy footsteps moving very slow and very loud.
Honey, hey, wake up.
Wake up.
[ FOOTSTEPS CONTINUE .]
And then we could hear it come around the bend and come towards the bedroom.
Be careful.
[ CRASH .]
And all of a sudden, we heard a huge crash downstairs in the kitchen.
My husband dashed down the stairs, full-speed, thinking he was gonna catch somebody in our kitchen.
Oh, my god.
And he was stopped dead in his tracks in the doorway.
All the chairs were laying on their backs all around the table.
I couldn't believe what I was looking at.
My husband checked the front door and the porch door.
Both deadbolts were still in place, so nobody could have come in.
The feeling that I had was whatever was in that house wanted us out.
And it was getting more serious.
It meant it.
A short time before we moved into the house, I had to start putting a brace on my son, on his feet at night.
My brother was born with one leg that was shorter than the other.
Good night.
NESS: I got ready for bed and crawled into bed and fell asleep myself.
[ WOMAN SCREAMS .]
NESS: In 1980, you did not talk about ghosts.
There was no Internet.
And it was just something you did not share with anyone Unless you wanted them to think you were crazy.
[ BABY CRYING .]
I woke suddenly, hearing my son not just crying Screaming, almost.
Aah! My son was gone.
But he was still screaming.
I could hear him, but I couldn't see him.
I happened to look down and his hand flailed out from under the crib.
So I got down on the floor, and he was almost to the wall underneath the crib.
Shh, shh, shh.
It's fine.
FINCHER: It would have been pretty impossible for him to get out of his crib with the braces on his legs that he had.
NESS: I had such a jolt in my stomach.
I was starting to believe that the house was haunted.
I felt very trapped Trapped and scared.
This particular night, my husband was sleeping.
[ FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING .]
I heard the sound of somebody coming up the stairs once again.
I did not wake him because you can't do that all night, every night and get up and go to work at 6:00 A.
M.
I could hear the steps coming down the hall.
[ DOOR CREAKING .]
[ INDISTINCT WHISPERING .]
And it was a male's voice right by my ear.
I felt something crawling onto the bed.
[ SCREAMING .]
It frightened me so bad that I literally punched into my husband and crawled up over the top of him to get away.
FINCHER: My mom told me it really scared her, but, at the same time, nobody ever really talked about what happened in the house.
She thought people would probably think they were nuts.
NESS: We'd been in the house probably about three and a half weeks when a neighbor invited us over for desserts.
Our neighbors were a lot older, and they had lived by the home for many years.
I knew I had to find out the history of this house.
Actually [ LAUGHS .]
we we think our house might be haunted.
And that's when she proceeded to tell us that she had seen many renters come and go, and she knew why.
[ WOMAN SCREAMS .]
NESS: I no longer feel that when you're dead, you're dead.
Aah! Some us go on and some of us stay depending on what happened in our lives.
That's what I believe.
The neighbor invited us over for desserts.
She asked me if we liked the home.
And I told her, "I think the house is haunted.
" She said to my husband, "Your great grandpa killed your great grandma in that house.
" He was speechless.
She proceeded to tell us that he had been uptown at the pub, came home about 1:00 in the morning, he took the poker from the kitchen, where the stove was and he went up to the upstairs bedroom and killed his wife with it.
[ BREATHING HEAVILY .]
After he was done, he went out to the garage and hung himself.
After hearing the history of the house, we went to his mother's, and she admitted that it was true.
She said it was something that had happened two, three generations before him, and she didn't feel that he needed to know about it.
[ MAN SCREAMS .]
[ GASPS .]
It was something she was ashamed of that happened.
I wanted to leave right then.
I did not want to stay another day, but we had nowhere to go, and, financially, we had no other choice.
We had to sell the house to get another house.
So we had to stay until we could arrange that.
[ BABY CRYING .]
My husband was at work, and I was home alone with the baby.
Hi.
Hello.
And he woke up, so I went upstairs to get him to bring him downstairs.
I walked down the hallway until I got to the landing.
I hesitated there to grab the banister.
[ BABY CRYING .]
I was frantic holding on to my son.
I was afraid I'd lose grasp on him and he would go rolling down the stairs.
I was more worried for my son than myself.
I knew that somebody had pushed me.
And it didn't feel like a man.
It felt like a woman.
It was the final straw.
I was holding my baby, I could have dropped him, he could have been hurt going down the stairs.
I was worried if we stayed, it could be something far worse than getting pushed down the stairs.
We were in the house for 38 days.
38 days seemed like 38 years.
What I saw in that house was real.
I wouldn't even walk through that house again.
FINCHER: When I think about the stories that I've heard about it, it just creeps me out.
My mom is such an honest person that I just have no doubt in my mind that she experienced this.
NESS: The way it made me look at death, it makes me curious why people would choose to linger.
Why not just go to the light, if there's a light, you know? Which I believe there is.
And it very much affected me.
It changed my life.

Oh, my god.
Baby.
Baby.
