A Remarkable Place to Die (2024) s01e03 Episode Script

Out of the Blue

1
Some things have recently
come to light in regards
to my sister's death.
[screaming]
There were no traces
of drugs in her system.
But there were traces.
I was persuaded to leave
them out of the report.
Persuaded by who?
Luke.
Ihaka Cooper. Nice to meet you.
Likewise.
I was engaged to him for a while.
I broke it off.
He married my best friend
about a year later.
It's no problem.
I'm skating on a frozen lake
and everything is perfect.
But I am so scared of
what's under the ice.
[thud]
He most certainly has a concussion.
I'm good to go.
So lie down.
Why didn't you tell me about Lynne?
You can't hide an addiction like that.
What?
Mom, I am just trying to
find out what happened to her.
She died in an accident.
Mom, I am trying to help, but
you have to be honest with me.
Just go.
I'll find them.
I promise.
[somber music]

[snoring]
[quirky music]

What the
[thud]
[ominous music]

[upbeat music]

Katie Palmer.
You called the police?
Yeah.
Lucky I had cell coverage.
Jack's dead.
I don't know what the hell happened,
but they said I was
gonna be taken down.
- So
- Yeah.
Detective Mallory.
We just need to get a statement off you
before you go back down.
You can talk to Sergeant Rata here.
Yeah.
Well, I don't know what happened.
I was asleep.
Yeah, we still need a
full statement from you.
I'll be back in a minute.
Detective, eh?
Pretty cool.
Yeah.
Not a pretty sight.
You must have got a bit of a shock.
Make that a fucking big shock.
I'm sorry about your friend.
Oh, he's not a friend, really.
We just met on the mountain.
Right.
And you didn't know the other guy?
Never seen him before.
Fun times.
You can get closer soon.
We're still photographing
blood patterns at the moment.
Okay.
Camo pants and a hunting jacket.
Clothes would suggest a hunter, yeah.
And the blood patterns show
us he landed on top of him
from a considerable height.
Rather cut short his day.
Yeah, and Jack's.
Apparently, the one
underneath is called Jack.
Oh, well.
So Jack had a big night
before our hunter dropped in.
Joints scattered, a
bottle of bourbon smashed.
Okay.
Got a team flying in.
We'll set up a grid and
search around the scene,
although it might not be very useful
if you fell out of the sky.
[scoffs]
[radio chatter]
He's supposed to be taking it easy.
What are you doing, Jarrod?
You've got a concussion.
So?
Simon's got a cracked rib.
Yeah, I wasn't gonna let the team down.
No way.
But two murders back to back, eh?
Well, this one might
just be a freak accident.
You reckon he fell from the sky?
How?
Well, this area is
popular with hunters.
Some of them are pretty
loose with safety.
Yeah.
He could have just
come out of a chopper,
shooting from the air, door
wide open, foot on the skid.
Mm.
Bit of a buzz, eh?
Recipe for disaster, more like.
Yeah.
But if it did happen, there
has to be a rifle somewhere.
Yeah.
And why wouldn't they have
landed to try to find him?
Do you want to set up the grid
search, Hoana, half K radius
from here?
No worries.
Well, what can I do?
You can stay put.
You're not even meant to be here.
Nah, I'm good.
Thick head.
Say that again.
We'll pardon that, Jarrod.
Oof.
Apparently, they had had
a big night on the booze.
Cody fell asleep with
his headphones on,
didn't hear a thing until
his mate got flattened.
Ooh, nasty.
Yeah.
Any follow up on that
baby from the other day?
No.
Why?
I saw the evidence
bag on the boss's desk.
Oh, she just wanted to
check a note in the report.
The arrest brief that you
put in on the Connery Templeton
homicides you made
no mention of this
piece of evidence collected at
the scene of Connery's death.
Uh, it wasn't at the scene, exactly.
No?
Where was it, exactly?
It was outside, um, a wee way
away from the mine entrance.
It turned out to be irrelevant,
but I can add it to the brief
if you feel like it's important.
I do.
I also note that the hard copy
file on your sister's accident
is missing.
Yeah.
I, um I have that.
I wanted to read it.
It's it's not
affecting my case work.
Does this have any relevance
to your sister's death
or the death of your father?
Why would it?
It's surprising that the prints on it
belonged to Alan Souter.
It's very odd, especially considering
how long he's been in jail.
It's probably just an
old score someone dropped.
Do you believe in coincidences, Anais?
I do. Yeah.
They happen.
I don't trust them.
Be very careful, Detective.
It's not worth blowing
an excellent career
on a misguided suspicion.
Okay, Boss.
If you can stick around for a
bit, that'd be really helpful.
No worries.
What about my tent and stuff?
We'll get your stuff back to you
when the scene's been cleared.
Well, thanks.
Cute and efficient, eh?
All right, Mr. Palmer, we'll
Bup, bup, bup.
Cody.
And you are?
Very busy.
We'll get you down the hill.
Our boss will set you up in town
until you get your gears back.
Or maybe until we need to speak
again, over a drink maybe.
Uh, if we need to talk more,
we can do it at the station.
Thanks for your help, Cody.
Worth a shot, eh?
Okay.
Cute and efficient, my man.
Far out, Hoana.
But you are normally such a night owl.
- I know.
- I know.
But, well, when Maya said
she was making you do
the 5:00 AM class, I
figured you'd probably
need a recovery coffee.
I do have a machine, you know.
Yeah, this is quicker and easier.
And, um, Luke has a
proposition for you.
Mm.
A date for the Arts
Festival dinner tonight.
You two trying to coax me
out of my shell or something?
- Oh, absolutely.
- Right.
I have an old business
associate in town.
He's a great guy, a lot of fun.
Yeah, I don't think so, Luke.
I would be the worst date.
You know I'm nominated as
chair of the committee.
Yeah, so it would be another
dead set vote in the room.
Now, come on. You'll love Harry.
Yeah.
And you do need just a little coaxing.
Ha.
Have you heard from Anais?
Uh, no.
No, no.
I've taken your husband's advice,
and I'm just giving us both
some time to let things settle.
Good for you.
Yeah.
[upbeat music]

Our man who fell out
of the sky is Snapes.
He's a local man.
And Potions Master of Hogwarts, eh?
[chuckles]
Sorry.
Tough crowd. Tough crowd.
Knock to the head doesn't seem to have
made a difference, Renner.
Snapes sounds familiar.
Yeah.
That is what he used to look like.
Doug Snapes, Snapper
to his mates, he's 42.
Form?
Yeah, going back to his
teens, just minor stuff.
Then a few more serious assaults.
Um, two of the assaults in Wanaka
four years ago were committed
with his best mate back then.
Who's his best mate?
A younger guy currently in jail
for drug offenses and manslaughter.
[ominous music]

I'm sorry, Anais.
The best mate I'm talking about was
Alan Souter.
Yeah.
Who's Alan Sout
Shut up, Renner.
Just
Anais, my office.
What's going on?
Who's Alan Souter?
He's the man that
killed Mallory's father.
Maybe we should both start
believing in coincidences.
I'm taking you off this.
I'll call in a team from Christchurch
to work with Simon.
Come on, Boss, I can handle it.
Alan Souter is in jail anyway.
He can't be connected to this.
Still too close.
Look, I know HQ is waiting to see how
a Queenstown homicide
unit pans out before they
fully commit to it.
Right?
So if you call for extra
resource from Christchurch,
everything falls apart.
Trust me, I will be fine.
All right.
Even if this was an accident,
failure to render assistance
is a crime.
So we'll start with the
helicopter charters.
All right.
Well, there's five commercial
outfits here and dozens
more in operating distance.
Plus, there's privately owned machines.
- I'll give you guys a hand, hey?
- Okay.
Thanks, Boss.
We'll also need Snapes's
records and any notes
on his earlier charges.
You might help us get
a handle on associates,
find next of kin, check
recent movements, and so on.
What about me?
You, Jarrod, are on light duties.
Keep the computer happy.
What?
No, Detective.
Anais?
[chuckles] okay, you can come with us.
Awesome.
Where?
Have you attended a full autopsy yet?
No.
Jack Laidlaw.
[gags]
I'm all right, man.
Do you want to grab a seat, Constable?
Um, I'll be fine.
Probably 'cause I got a concussion.
You okay If we continue?
Aw, yeah, for sure.
Yeah.
Um, I might actually take a,
um, seat for a minute or two.
Actually, Doc, do you
mind if I borrow this?
Of course.
Awesome.
I really appreciate you letting
me be in your space and that.
[gags]
Gotta learn to handle it sometime.
So, um, I guess this one's
pretty much open and shut, huh?
Uh-uh.
We still give him the
attention he needs.
So massive crush injuries,
almost every rib broken.
Sternum was driven close to the spine,
so death would have been instant.
I'll run bloods, but given
the photos from the scene,
I imagine we'll find evidence
of both marijuana and alcohol.
I will update you when
I have the results.
Both of us.
Of course.
Yes, sure.
You agree with SOCO's
estimate of time of death?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, given the degree of
rigor and core temperature,
allowing for the cold up there,
yeah, I would say around dawn.
Well, that fits our witness statement.
Yeah.
When will you be able
to get to our other guy?
Snapes, the man who fell from the sky.
Uh, hoping to get to
him this afternoon.
I've started cataloging
the personal belongings here.
Mm-hmm.
The jacket's new but torn.
Yes.
We noticed the pocket hanging
loose and a missing button.
Right.
The envelope was in his
inside jacket pocket.
Mm-hmm.
We'll run some prints on that.
How much was in it?
$10,000.
Okay.
Thanks, Anjali.
You have fun.
Doc.
Detective.
[suspenseful music]

Hey, I just sent you a photo.
Can you keep an eye out
for a matching button?
There's nothing in George's
scene report, but check anyway.
Will do.
Anything from grid search?
Not yet.
It's pretty rough ground.
We're doing full 360s, spiraling out,
so we could be a while.
Okay, well, keep at it.
What now?
Getting an address
from Snapes's license.
Feeling better?
Uh, yeah. Good as.
Good as.
Yeah.
Concussion.
Funny thing there, though.
Yeah.
[intense music]

Ah, the grand residence
of Douglas Snapes.
Ooh.
The credit card in the left stands on.
Only used with just cause.
Man is dead.
Oof.
Love the ambience.
Yeah.
Place could do with
a bloody good clean.
Mm.
A scented candle, at least, eh?
Right.
What are we looking for, Jarrod?
Ooh, um, uh, evidence.
Clues like, um like, for instance,
if he left a note saying
that he was gonna jump out
of a chopper and kill
himself because he
was so depressed about
living in a dump like this.
Then, uh, boom-shakalaka, case solved.
And well done, us, but I
won't be holding my breath.
TV dinners, no TV.
Wasn't exactly living
the high life, was he?
Not till he fell out of the sky.
Hey, Simon, were there any cigarettes
in his personal belongings?
No.
Let's lift some prints off
the glasses by the ashtray.
Two glasses, two dinners, cigarettes
I think he had a visitor.
[suspenseful music]

Yo.
He was a member of Snapshots.
Nice one, Jarrod.
The shooting range?
Well, cool.
We won't be here long.
I'll do the range.
Hey, check this out.
Some kind of diary.
[music intensifies]

[gunshot]
Doug and his brother
Len used to be members.
[gunshot]
Good shots.
I haven't seen them
for a while, though.
Snapper, is he all right?
[gunshot]
Why do you ask?
Well, you know, cops
come sniffing around,
tend to assume the worst.
Well, I wouldn't count on
him renewing his membership.
[gunshot]
He's dead, I'm afraid.
Dead?
[gunshot]
What happened?
That is what we're
trying to figure out.
We're also trying to find his brother.
Any ideas?
Len.
[gunshot]
Well, he moved south
a while ago, I think.
Invercargill, maybe.
And anyone else that he used
to bring here or hang out with?
Snapper was a wild man.
Him and his brother, Len, mad fuckers.
[gunshot]
And did Doug have his own gun?
Sure did, Zastava M85.
How'd you go?
Hey, that reminds me
Snapper was hanging out with
a kid here a while back,
bit older than that
one, teaching him stuff.
Do you remember his name?
It was Ben.
Ben.
Ben Souter.
Brother of that guy
got done for murder.
Look, you're probably going
to say, no, I'm on duty.
But I couldn't offer you
a free shot, could I?
[rapid gunfire]
That's fucking cooked.
[intense music]

Is Sharon here?
No.
Ben Souter, Alan Souter's brother.
You okay?
In the dead file
where's the hard copy?
Why do you want the hard copy?
Call me old fashioned.
I just prefer a hard copy
when I'm working on a case.
Makes it more real. [drawer slams]
I'd have thought the last thing
you'd want to make more real
would be your dad's death.
Anais, just calm down.
[slap]
Oh.
Oh.
Sorry, Simon.
No.
No, look uh, my bad.
Stupid.
I shouldn't have said that.
Hey, the um the file's
in the boss's desk.
She pulled it once she found out you
took the one on your sister.
How do you know about that?
Maybe I'm not as
dumb as you think I am.
Look, she sees you
flipping out like this,
she really will pull you off the case.
[sighs]
So if you're determined
to review your dad's file,
let's do it on the system
using my access code.
Okay?
Okay.
Okay.
Sorry.
No. It's fine.
Okay? We're good.
We're good.
I might just take a minute.
[sighs]
[intense music]

[sighs]
[sighs]
[phone buzzing]
This is Veronica.
Please leave a message.
[phone beeps]
[somber music]

Wish me luck, Darling.
[doorbell rings]
Oh.
Veronica.
Harry.
Harry Grayson.
Well, it's a pleasure.
All mine.
The others are in the car.
I demanded some time to
say hello and give you
the opportunity to run for
your life or change your mind
or whatever.
Well, maybe I can decide that
over the course of the evening.
Well, that sounds like a great idea.
Mm.
Shall we?
Interesting little book.
No names, just dates, payments.
2 grand a month.
It's a kind of ledger.
Mm.
There's some pages missing, too.
Yeah.
Hey, I got a read on the
prints on that glass.
It's his brother, Len.
Ah.
So his brother's got a record.
No, no.
It was just an elimination print.
He was a witness to an armed robbery.
He took the guy down, though.
Must be a bit of a nutter.
Ex-military.
Mm.
Hey, look, here we go.
Ben Souter, just this
one link to his interview
in your dad's case.
I told you, I don't know
anything about any meth lab.
You might as well fess up,
Ben, because we will find out.
There's nothing to find out.
Alan doesn't tell me anything.
He's just a kid.
What is he, 15?
16, which makes him about 20 now.
You can't bloody talk to me.
You should have my mom in
here if you want to do this.
And four years after this,
he's mates with his brother's
old partner in crime.
Look, I know my rights.
The boss and I were having
a chat about coincidences.
I told her I believe in them.
I lied.
I don't.
So let's go talk to him.
You know, I'm going with you.
Okay?
So then if the boss asks, it
was me who made the connection.
Why would you do that?
To cover your ass.
I mean, you're gonna stay
on this no matter what.
Right?
And I'd hate to see you go down.
Come on then, or do I
have to slap you again?
Yeah, even me up.
[laughter]
[suspenseful music]

Okay.
Thanks, Boss.
Yeah, I'll tell her.
No, just following up
on a possible lead.
Yeah, okay.
All right, bye.
Well, Ben Souter still
lives at home but he's out.
Yeah, they're doing all right.
It's expensive around here.
Yeah.
And that was Hoana.
Nothing from the grid search yet.
We're losing light and
it's freezing up there,
so they're gonna wrap
it up for the day.
Anything from private choppers?
No.
I mean, either this dude
didn't fall out of one,
or somebody's lying about
not being in the air.
Well, Ben's mom said he's
gone into town for a drink
and some music, so
So what?
No. Now?
- Yeah.
- Seriously?
Yeah.
It's better than sitting on our hands
waiting for him to show up.
Or we could be enjoying
a beer or a wine somewhere,
or I don't know, dinner maybe.
No? Okay.
Yep, let's go.
Ah.
Parking's gonna be crap.
Yeah.
I told you we'd have
a walk on our hands.
You did.
You know how many bars and
clubs there are in Queenstown?
Oh, it has been a long time
since I went to a club, Simon.
Enlighten me.
Last count, dozens.
Oh.
What?
Hello.
Oh.
Well, you're in emergency and that.
You probably get all
the crazy guys like me.
Constable Renner!
Oh, shit.
Oh, shit.
Sorry.
- Um, did I did I get you?
- No.
Water did, though. Ooh.
Um, hi Anais, Simon.
Detective.
Yeah, sorry.
Shelby, this is
I saw them at the hospital.
Hi, I'm Shelby.
You were one of his nurses, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Just finished two weeks
of night shift rotation.
We're having dinner.
Yeah, so we see.
Cool.
So good timing then, eh, your accident.
Oh, not that good.
I won't let him drink wine.
Not so soon after a concussion.
I'm glad you're looking after him.
- Someone has to.
- Yeah.
Wouldn't want him getting
nauseous or anything,
now, would we?
Well, you guys enjoy your evening.
Thanks.
You too.
Oh, no, no, no, no.
Oh, no, no.
- We're we're still, uh
- On the beat.
On the job.
Yeah.
We're heading into town, actually.
So I mean, where do you reckon the best
music is these days around here,
like, if you happen to be 20?
Um, Barney's?
Yeah, or The Caxton.
And you might want to check
the lakefront on the way too.
They'll preload there
before they hit the clubs.
Okay, great.
Enjoy your pizza.
[chuckles]
[upbeat music]

You sure about the wine?
'Cause, like, I've got a tough head.
Yes, I am sure, Jarrod.
[chatter]
And I was like, excuse me.
Excuse me.
You don't own this beach, actually.
And he's like, really angry.
And then he's like, growling.
That's him.
Ben.
Ben Souter?
Need a chat.
What?
Police.
- We'd like a word.
- Why?
I haven't done anything.
Now.
Piss off!
Fucking prick!
[intense music]

Come here!
Get off of me.
Settle down.
All right.
You're under arrest.
Call him in.
Yep.
We need a car.
[chatter]
Yeah, great.
Brilliant.
You didn't need to arrest him, Simon.
He shoved me.
That's assault police.
It's not assault police
if you forget it happened.
We're trying to get
information out of him
about the Snapes brothers.
Charging him is not going
to help get his cooperation,
- is it?
- Okay.
Fine.
I'll stick him in an interview room.
I'll be back up.
[car engine starts]
[classical music, chatter]
Hi, Mom.
Anais, hi.
I just need to chat to my daughter.
- I'll catch up, all right?
- Of course.
Hi, guys.
We're off to the Arts Festival dinner.
Oh, great.
Right.
Well, we'll just go see
if everyone's arrived yet.
I've been trying to
call you to apologize.
You haven't answered.
I know.
I've made some decisions.
I'm trying to move on
with my life, Anais.
I really think you need to, as well.
So I'm giving you the space
and the time to do that.
But when you're ready, I'll
be more than happy to resume
normal relations.
Okay?
So have a lovely evening and
I'll see you soon, I hope.
Okay.
[somber music]

Doug Snapes.
What about him?
Do you know him?
Maybe.
He was teaching you to shoot.
Shoot better.
I was already good.
You ever go hunting with him?
I don't have to answer any of this.
I didn't do anything.
You assaulted a police officer.
You were drinking in a public place.
You want me to charge
you now, lock you up?
Is that it?
Are we done?
Did you ever go hunting with him, Ben?
A couple of times.
Him and Len.
Me and Doug were planning a
trip, but I couldn't afford it.
Been out of a job for a bit.
You know where his brother is?
No.
No bloody idea.
Doug Snapes was on a hunting
trip this morning in a chopper.
Guess he went anyway, then.
Without you.
So where were you at dawn today?
In bed.
Where were you?
Do you have any idea
who would have flown him?
No.
Okay.
Can I arrest him now?
What's all this about, anyway?
Doug Snapes is dead, Ben.
Sorry.
[ominous music]

He talked to this foreign bloke.
Snapper thought he might do
him a deal, but he said no.
You remember his name?
No.
It was like, it was
Russian or some shit.
It was an "itch" type name.
We met him at a pub.
What pub?
[intense music]

Booking's with Linda in the office.
We're not after a booking.
We're after a conversation.
I don't know anybody named Snapes.
What about Ben Souter?
Nope.
That's odd.
Because my partner here uploaded
the CCTV footage last night.
Nice blow up for you.
Hmm.
This is the guys you're talking about?
Yeah.
They bought you a drink.
Doesn't mean he knows their name.
Snapes thought you might offer
him a discount on a flight.
Why would he think that
if he didn't know you?
I don't give discounts.
I told him that, so no deal.
I left.
End of the story.
Did you fly yesterday morning?
No, I was busy.
[speaking russian]
[speaking russian]
Is this your only helicopter?
For now, yes.
Do you mind if we take a look at it?
Sure.
[speaking russian]
Simon, we're gonna need a warrant.
[speaking russian]
A warrant?
To forensically examine his chopper
and go through his flight logs. Yeah.
What grounds?
He lied to us about not
knowing one of the victims.
We have footage of them together.
Yeah, it's flimsy.
No, it'll fly.
No pun intended on that one.
Look, it's the weekend, boss.
There's no magistrate. It's just a JP.
Okay?
They'll grant a warrant.
Okay.
I'll see if I can get it happening.
Now, more prints turned up from
that envelope with the 10k.
Just Snapes, but there
are some smudges.
Gloves.
Someone was being very careful.
Yeah.
We'll run some background
checks on Ivanovich, too.
He's Russian.
We'll make some inquiries over there.
[knocking]
Development.
[whistle]
Hoana's found the gun.
Trajectory to the blood patterns
suggested a flight direction.
Now, if the gun was
tossed after Snapes was,
it'd have to be that way.
So I extended the grid out there.
Brilliant.
And?
It was about 600 meters away.
Landed in some scrub, so
she's in pretty good nick.
Simon's running the serial number
and organizing the prints.
Okay.
So Snapes wasn't shooting off the skid
or dangling from a keel.
He either fell or he was thrown out.
Torn pocket, missing
button could mean a struggle.
And what's the $10,000 all about?
Great question.
Simon.
I got a response to the
serial number on the Zastava.
It's not Snapes's gun.
But it's an M85, like we were told.
Yeah, it's not his.
It's registered to Alan Souter.
[ominous music]

Prints on it belong to Alan Souter.
Snapes was hanging out
with a kid here a while back.
Ben.
Ben Souter brother of that
guy got done for murder.
Doug Snapes is dead, Ben.
A few more serious assaults
with his best mate back then.
Alan Souter.
The guy who killed your father.
[exhales sharply]
[breathes shakily]
[somber music]

[phone ringing]
Hi.
Hey.
Hi.
Um, Ihaka
Anais, are you okay?
Yes.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, I will be.
Um ooh, sorry.
Are you free to, um, come to the lot?
I'm sorry.
We just had a rock
climbing fatality come in.
Oh.
Oh, okay.
Sorry. That's okay.
But hey, of course.
Of course I can.
I will be down by 6:00.
Is that okay?
Are you sure you're
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm okay. I'm okay.
6:00 is good.
See you then. Bye.
[phone beeps]
[exhales sharply]
[car engine starts]
[somber music]

How am I supposed to do
my job without a computer?
She's right.
You are screwing my business.
Read the warrant.
Any complaints, call our boss.
You'll get them back.
Maybe you should have cooperated, eh?
[radio chatter]
Why only the logs and files?
What happened to the
search of the chopper?
Warrant officer flexing her muscles.
She said the evidence
from the flight logs
might be enough to
authorize a wider search,
but she'll think about it then.
No, everything.
All of it.
I've got to go.
Where's your boss?
Mr. Ivanovich, clearly
we don't have a warrant
to search your chopper.
But would you consider
cooperating voluntarily?
Hmm.
You speak Russian,
eh, so you understand.
[speaking russian]
[sighs]
[quirky music]

[copy machine whirring]
So stoked Ivanovich didn't
make this easy on us by giving
us his computer's access code.
Yeah?
Why would he do that?
In the spirit of cooperation, Jarrod.
As if.
Anais prefers working
with hard copies anyway.
[ominous music]

Uh, I have to go out for a minute.
Keep at it.
I want to know how often
this guy scratches his ass.
And which cheek, eh?
Oh.
[laughter]
Oh, dear.
Sorry.
Excuse me.
Anais.
Hi.
- Everything all right?
- Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
No, I'm just here to see Luke.
Right.
Are you leaving?
No.
I'm going to powder my nose.
Be right back.
Sorry to interrupt the party again.
You're not.
Why don't you join us?
I'm here for work.
Luke, I need a word.
Goodness.
You didn't bring your handcuffs?
[chuckles]
[ominous music]

So how can I help?
You and Maja are regular
customers of FI-Air.
Your name's in the flight logs.
They're a helicopter
charter company owned by
Fedor. Yes, of course.
Yes, we are.
So what do you use that for?
Flying.
I mean, flying us on
occasion and business trips
to Christchurch, the odd
weekend up at the sounds,
taking visiting friends
out sight seeing.
Why?
Hunting?
No, I don't like hunting.
Remember?
Your dad's trophies
used to freak me out.
But I do think Fedor
does take out hunters.
And how would you describe him?
A great pilot.
Professional.
I think he's a bit direct sometimes.
I think it's just a
language thing, though.
Why?
Is he in some kind of trouble?
Enjoy your lunch.
[ominous music]

Constable, how you going?
Meat lovers or Hawaiian?
Uh, one of each.
We're working late tonight.
Bummer.
Detective Mallory, as well?
No.
- She's out in the field.
- Out in the field.
Yeah. Yeah.
Well, that'd be nice, eh?
Out in the field, blanket,
pizza, bottle of wine.
I mean, that'd be the go, right?
[laughter]
No, no.
Detective Mallory is more no-frills.
Crispy crust but no spice.
Okay?
No spice.
Cool.
Yeah, yeah, I'm down
on that kind of stuff.
- Yeah, good.
- Yeah.
Whatever, idiot.
I never told you
'cause you never asked.
Right.
So your brother gave you the
gun when he went to jail.
He said I could have it until he gets
parole, which he will get.
Not for a good long while.
Doug Snapes's prints were on that gun.
So are yours, matched to
your shoplifting, age 17.
Why'd you lend it to him?
He knows the make.
That's how we got to
be mates, same guns.
And?
The scope mount on
his rifle got mounted,
so I lent him mine.
Your brother's.
It's registered to him.
The rego isn't up, not
for a couple of months.
So the gun's legal.
Did your brother ever mention
a man named Luke Staunton?
Who?
No, I've never heard of him.
You have a good day, Ben.
[door opens]
How'd you go? Anything useful?
Nope.
I thought so, but dead end.
How'd you go with Snapes's next of kin?
We keep trying at Len's last known.
It's in Invercargill.
Yeah, they've been trying
to find him, too, but no luck.
Well, maybe that's
'cause he's still here.
Put out a WTI.
What?
I found a pattern in the manifests.
Different solo passenger,
regular as clockwork,
every two months.
Ah.
Look at this.
Ah, interesting passengers
Smith, Jones, Brown, another Smith.
Yeah, and look where
they're all heading
Millstone.
There's nothing much
in Millstone except
The regional correctional
facility and Alan Souter.
[ominous music]

[bones cracking]
[groans]
There you go.
Thank you.
Yes.
So
So now, quite possibly, I have
to go to Millstone to
interview my father's killer.
Jesus.
No wonder you bloody needed to talk.
No.
I needed to talk even before
I found out about that.
I think I had kind of
a panic attack and I
I wanted to call someone.
But I didn't know who to
call, so I called you.
Well, I'm glad you did.
But why?
Why the panic attack?
Everything just keeps
folding in on itself.
It's like I'm in a maze, and
every time I turn a corner
the same people are there.
But I'm the only one that's lost.
They know exactly where they are.
And I'm starting to think
one of them built the fucking
maze in the first place.
And it's just
Who are they?
These people, who are they?
I don't know.
What, do you
you think you know?
I don't have any proof,
so I shouldn't even
be talking about it, really.
But I had to talk to someone
because I don't talk to anyone.
I'm glad you can talk to me then.
And I am glad that you came back.
I'm a detective.
I'm supposed to be good at puzzles.
Today I raced off to talk to Luke.
His name was just one
on a booking list.
It didn't show up any more
than some of the others,
but but it was him.
And I just felt like, I don't know,
I had to look him in
the eye when I asked
him questions or something.
Good.
That's good.
Yeah, it's good instinct, Anais.
You should listen to it.
I do in my job.
Yeah, but you deal in
physical evidence and facts.
Yeah, but instinct is
what leads me to them.
It's good.
Well done.
[glasses clink]
[ominous music]

[serene music]

[phone buzzing]
Mallory.
Hey.
Brian Makepeace here
from regional corrections
regarding your inquiry
about visits to Alan Souter.
Yes.
Well, he did have visits on
the dates that you gave us.
Yeah, every time.
So did you still want to
arrange that interview?
Uh, yes.
Yes, I do.
I will be out this
morning if that's okay.
I'll call with an ETA.
Oh, well, good.
He's not going anywhere.
No.
Right.
Um, okay.
Thanks.
[suspenseful music]

[sighs]
[phone buzzing]
Simon.
You're not gonna to believe this.
When can we get into the main wreck?
Just waiting for CAA
to give us clearance.
We're ready to go.
When you do, can you swab
the seats for potential DNA?
If we can play Snapes in that machine,
we're a step closer to
figuring out his death.
On my list, Detective.
Thank you.
And the button, too, from
our other murder victim.
I'll send you a picture, Georgia.
So you're treating
this as a murder then.
We certainly don't
think it was an accident.
So you think this whole
thing goes back to Alan Souter.
Well, let's join the dots for a second.
Okay.
A dead hiker killed when Doug Snapes
is thrown out of a helicopter.
By Fedor Ivanovich.
Yeah.
Now, Doug Snapes is loaned a firearm
by Alan Souter's brother Ben.
Mm-hmm.
Ivanovich has regularly
been flying Snapes
to see Alan Souter in jail.
Yeah.
And when we find that
out, he's killed, too.
I think someone is
tying off loose ends.
And I think it's the
same person who's paying
for the sound of silence.
Well, maybe Doug's brother
Len Snapes knows who it is.
Well, there is only
one way to find out.
I'll put out a WTO.
Thanks.
[doorbell rings]
- Veronica.
- Hey.
Lovely as always.
Thanks.
And I'm, uh, eight minutes early.
Sorry.
My tour of apartments with best views
of the lake, as discussed yesterday.
Yes, well, luckily I'm 10 minutes early
- so we can get going.
- Great.
Okay.
Well, I've hired a convertible
so we can enjoy the day.
And if you have time, perhaps
we can do lunch again after.
That sounds lovely.
I'll just grab my bag.
Okay.
All set.
Great.
After you.
Thanks.
We think we need to find out
where Ivanovich was headed.
Check to see if he
logged the flight, yeah?
Yeah.
Check at his office, too.
We have his computers,
but maybe he reverted
to good old hard copy.
On it.
And Boss um, I need
authorization for a helicopter
flight of my own.
To?
Millstone for an interview.
Now, Anais, it's getting ridiculous.
Boss, Ivanovich took
regular trips to the RCF.
They coincide with dates
of visits to Alan Souter.
No, Anais, I am not
having you interview
I can interview him.
It's a legitimate part of the inquiry.
I'll go with her.
She can listen in while I talk to him.
I can handle it.
Be quiet, Anais, while I'm
still standing here listening.
Because when I stop
listening, nobody goes.
Anais.
What's this all about, Simon?
You still covering my ass or what?
This was the only way
it was gonna happen.
I have to interview Souter.
Me.
It's not just about this case.
I know that.
Okay?
But sometimes you have to
let people help you, Anais.
Like I said, it was the only way.
So are we doing this or not?
Yeah.
[helicopter blades whirring]
[intense music]

Be a pretty cool job,
eh, flying choppers.
Yeah, I don't like them.
They seem even less likely
to stay up in the air
than planes do.
Not afraid of flying, are you?
If God wanted us to
fly, we'd have feathers.
There's nothing here.
You sure you didn't
take the booking, Linda?
No.
It came through Fedor's fine.
He didn't say who or where to.
Right.
And you pump your own avgas?
Look, I just don't feel
like answering these questions
right now, okay?
Well, I'm sorry.
It's just that we're
trying to get to the bottom
of this accident.
So the gas?
Yes.
We pump our own avgas.
Thank you.
Where's it stored?
In drums around the side.
It's not used so far, and it's
not likely to be now either,
is it?
Your boss logged the
flight to Wanaka, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Just tell them that's all we got.
I'll check out the drums.
You take the workspace.
Okay?
[sighs]
Video logs.
So these are the most relevant
ones from the last six months
three visits on the
dates that you gave me.
Same person each time, his uncle.
That's our guy, Snapes, a.k.a.
Smith, a.k.a.
Jones, a.k.a.
Brown.
None of them uncles.
How's Souter going with
personal comforts and support?
He's doing pretty well for himself.
That is a lot of perks.
There is an observation window.
But the observer has to
be visible at all times
because of our regulations.
Here you go.
[ominous music]

Okay.
Thanks.
But I think I'll do the observing.
I feel a bit queasy after the flight.
I get airsick.
Do you want me to come in?
Uh, no, no.
- I'm fine.
- Okay.
I'll just wait outside.
Just in case, eh?
[door slams]
[suspenseful music]

[exhales] Mr. Souter, I'm a detective
with Queenstown Police.
I have some questions
Alan.
I have some questions.
I know.
You were a detective
on my case for a minute
before that other
prick shunted you off.
I have some questions about visits you
received on a regular basis.
Personal involvement, wasn't it?
[mimics gunshot]
Now you're in charge, eh?
Detective Mallory.
[ominous music]

[door slams]
Hey, can you give us a minute, Brian?
Yeah, no problem.
Buzz the gate.
They'll let you through.
Hey, you did good.
I let him get to me.
No.
Well, okay, maybe a little bit.
You nearly got him.
You will be in deep shit if
Sharon finds out you did that.
We better not tell her then, eh?
So um, if I said you owe me
one, would it spoil the moment?
- Yeah, definitely.
- Fine, okay.
Yeah.
We should get to the
chopper and head back.
Sharon's paying our Top Gun
out there to sit on the ground
and wait for us.
Hey, Simon, I owe you one.
[suspenseful music]

What about this?
Possibility.
Give it a call.
All right.
Just how much bang do we
get for Command's buck?
Well, it's not so
much about bang, Boss,
as it is about pulling
things into focus.
So help me with your focus.
Where exactly are we
at with this thing?
What'd Souter have to say for himself?
I asked him about his
relationship with Snapes.
[mimics gunshot]
Now you're in charge, eh?
Detective Mallory.
You know exactly who I am.
So I would be really fucking
careful if I were you.
Shall we try again?
You received regular
visits from Douglas Snapes.
Doug?
Yeah, every couple of months.
He's a good mate.
And it's really hard to
find good mates nowadays.
He provides you with all
of your comfort packages,
doesn't he?
Used to be cigarettes
before they got banned.
What's the currency now, chocolates?
Kitchen appliances?
Fancy shampoo?
I happen to know your cell is fitted
out with more personal
gear than any other cage
in this zoo.
Mm.
I do okay.
Yeah, so do your mom and baby brother.
It's a nice house, all paid
for, even though your mom
hasn't had a regular job for years
and your brother's
currently unemployed.
I'd better have a word
with him, lazy little bugger.
So where does it all come
from, all this largeness?
I told you, Doug's a good mate.
He's
Oh, don't give me that.
Doug hasn't got a pot to shit in.
He spends what he's been given,
and he's been given plenty.
Who by?
You got a lively
imagination, Detective.
Tell me about Luke Staunton.
Who?
You know who I'm talking about.
Oh, is he that fancy restaurant guy?
Do not fucking bullshit me, Souter.
Everything is about to change for you.
You're about to lose your fucking
privileges because your
good mate Doug is dead.
Someone chucked him
out of a helicopter.
And do you know why he's dead, Alan?
He's dead because someone
is tying up loose ends.
Loose ends left over from
your fuck up four years ago.
Snapes was involved in
that Meth lab, wasn't he?
And that makes him a loose end.
His body was meant to lie on the side
of that mountain for a good long time
before it was discovered, if ever.
And now that came unstuck.
And guess what.
The pilot who kept
bringing him to see you,
he's dead too because killing Snapes
made him another loose end.
So who does that leave, Alan?
It leaves you.
You are the last person
left who knows exactly what
was going on four years back.
You know who was
bankrolling all of this.
So why don't you tell
me who really pays
for your silence and all
these little comforts
you and your family receive, and I
can take them out of play.
Then maybe you won't
get tied up like all
those other loose ends.
You help me, maybe you'll stay alive.
Fuck you.
So it was inconclusive.
He didn't confirm or deny anything,
but you could see it in his eyes.
You could see that, could you, Anais?
I mean, well, it was you
could see it in his whole
body language quite clearly.
You could see that.
And you know, obviously
he's lying about Snapes
being his sponsor.
But somebody is looking
after him and his family.
Yeah.
And another big payout is
probably waiting for him,
too, when he gets out.
Some bank account somewhere.
You think the person who gave
$10,000 to Snapes is the same
person bankrolling Souter?
Possibly, yes.
Souter gets paid to
keep his mouth shut.
But Snapes had to be
taken out of the picture
completely for some reason.
So the money, the free hunting trip,
that's bait to get him into that
chopper so he could be killed.
Someone was prepared to shove
10k out the door with him?
Maybe 10k is nothing
in the scheme of things.
Yeah.
Well, what things are those?
I'm not prepared to
say at the minute, Boss.
It's still very much speculation.
Well, when you are
prepared to say, yeah,
I'll be right here waiting to hear it.
- Okay.
- Yeah, okay.
Sounds good.
[siren wailing]
[turn signal clicking]
[emergency brake engaging]
You realize you were speeding, Madam?
[laughs] No, I recognized the Jeep.
We got some info from
the chopper dude's place.
Oh, yeah.
Sorry about all comedy
central over here.
Got something we might want
to follow up on with Linda.
[gasps] She was listening to
us on her last visit, and then
she made a phone call.
Well, she reckons the
spare drums of avgas
haven't been touched, but
they could have been easily.
So I've tagged them and got a uniform
watching them till we're
ready to pick them up.
Okay, although there's another way
we could go with that.
Hey, what about eagle
eye me, the number.
Ivanovich jots things
down on his noticeboard
and Jarrod found a phone number.
Yeah, we've been calling.
Finally finally got a reply.
And?
A Wanaka number.
It's the customer he
was supposed to pick up.
Of course, he never showed.
Anyone we know?
No, a Meredith Frampton.
He was flying her back to
spend some time down here.
Yeah, with your friend.
Well, she was the one
that organized the flight.
The one from the gym
Maja.
Hey, Anais.
Hey.
Don't suppose they do a matcha latte.
Uh, no.
I got you a coffee, though.
Oh.
The pies are awesome.
Oh, I'm not really hungry.
That's okay.
Sorry.
I was all the way at Five
Mile when you called.
- Oh.
- But it sounded urgent.
So what did you want to talk about?
Shall we um
look, we've been out of
step since I got back.
I'm sorry that's the way
it's worked out, Maja.
Okay.
Yeah, me too.
I guess it was always
gonna be awkward
you, me, Luke.
Yeah, I guess so.
And just so you know,
I didn't expect it
or, like, actively pursue it.
When I got back from Europe, you
I buggered off.
Yeah.
[chuckles] And he still
talks about you sometimes,
so I get jealous, too.
I'm not jealous, Maja.
I'm concerned for you.
I'm sorry?
Look.
It was either meet here and
chat or go to the station
and make it an official interview.
I don't understand.
I ended things with Luke
because he consistently
refused to be honest with me.
I had no idea what was
going on in his life
apart from the superficial
things, the palatable things.
Is that how it is with you?
No, it's not.
I hope that's true.
I hope you're not involved
in anything he's got going.
You booked a flight
for Meredith Frampton
to come down from Wanaka.
So what are you suggesting,
that we had something
to do with the accident?
I'm sorry, Anais, that's insane.
We always use Fedor.
Whose idea was Meredith's trip?
Hers?
Yours?
Luke's?
Look, Luke loves me.
He used to love you.
I'm sorry if that's made you
feel uncertain about him.
Maybe you should ask
Luke some of the questions
I've been asking you,
for your own sake, Maja.
Coffee's on me.
[ominous music]

[jeep approaching]
They let you park there?
Yeah, for free.
Wow.
Cool ride.
Suits you.
Thank you.
Yeah, they haven't got me a car yet,
but I like the Jeep anyway.
Are you stalking me?
Well, I'm sitting outside
enjoying the sunshine.
They said I wasn't needed anymore,
gave me all my gear back.
So thank you and good night.
But yes, I am persistent.
So come on.
Come and have a drink with me.
[chuckles] I, uh
I'm busy with a murder inquiry.
Thanks, but no thanks.
Ah, that is disappointing.
I'm crying real tears here.
Okay, bye.
It's entered as evidence.
You can't have it.
Oh, what gives you the right
to keep the bloody thing?
- The law.
- The law?
Is this still about that gun?
I want it back.
It's not fair.
Life's not fair, Ben, or death.
Ah, screw you and
leave my brother alone, okay?
Get off his back.
All right.
Out now.
Okay, yeah.
If you can send me the
images, the in situ, and the
clean shot, that'd be great.
Yeah, thanks.
- Hey.
- Hey.
Three useful findings the chopper
crashed because of engine
failure, contaminated fuel.
Coffee?
No, thanks.
What was it contaminated with?
They're still doing an analysis.
Either bad luck or
someone's messed with it, eh?
Yeah, quite possible.
Probable, even.
Plus, they checked the lower
ball joint bolt assembly
on the passenger door.
It looks like that
door has been removed
and replaced several times.
You said three useful things.
Did we find Len Snapes?
No.
But Georgia found something
useful at the wreckage.
Check this out.
Oh, what's that it's pointing to?
The missing button.
Bit burnt, but it matches.
Mm-hmm.
Doug Snapes was in their
chopper two days ago.
We just need to find
out who put him there.
You don't reckon this
was just an argument
between Ivanovich and
No, no no, no.
Ivanovich shoved him out for sure.
This was not a fight.
This was an execution.
Maybe it's time you shared all
your thoughts with the boss.
Yeah.
Maybe it is.
She got a call in here to head out.
Okay.
Well, I might just shake a
tree, see what falls out.
But at first, there's something
I want you all to do tonight.
[knock on door]
[angry chatter]
That's all right. It's all right.
- I've got it.
- I'm not upset.
I'm bloody angry. I don't want
Oh, shit.
I need to talk to Luke.
I've already talked to him.
I think you've done
enough damage for one day.
I want you to leave, Anais, now.
I have questions that
need to be answered, Luke.
I know all about your questions.
Maja's already asked me your questions.
And we had a screaming
argument thanks to your totally
paranoid unfounded notions.
Boss.
Now, this is exactly
the kind of harassment
I'm talking about.
This is why I called you.
Mr. Staunton's right. You should leave.
No, no, no, Boss.
I was gonna talk to
you about this, okay?
Snapes was definitely
in that helicopter.
We have the evidence.
We know how it all went down.
We're checking the fuel
drums in the morning.
Hey, what was the 10 grand, Luke,
a bonus for all those years of service
keeping Alan Souter happy in jail?
A free hunting trip with a
nice little goodbye sweetener
to make him feel secure
enough to get in the chopper?
Anais.
You see what I'm talking about?
How was it all set up?
The door was already off.
And then what, one good punch
[groans]
Just stun him, toss him out?
Fuck you doing, bro? Stop!
No! No!
No! No! No!
Oh, god!
[screams]
Then, if he is found,
it's just an accident
no one's owning up to.
Mallory.
Anais, enough.
Why would he have somebody do that?
Oh, I don't know.
Maybe Snapes got greedy,
demanded more money,
or threatened to expose you.
Expose me about what?
Ivanovich needed to
be silenced, too, hey,
once we discovered all
those regular flights.
Anais, that is enough.
No, no.
It's okay, Inspector.
I finally get it.
I can finally see what it is
your mother's been so upset
about since you got back.
She's been telling us about
your obsessiveness, your
fixation on Lynn's accident.
And now this.
And this is what,
another bloody conspiracy
theory, a whole new obsession
with your dad's death, too?
Because Anais, I know
what this is really about.
You weren't there for Lynn.
I was.
But the past is the past.
You ended our relationship,
and I'm happy now.
And I wish you could be, too.
And maybe you can be if
you just let all this go
and accept that, in
spite of everything,
I've remained a good
friend to your mother
and done everything I can to help her.
So why would I want to have
anything to do with the man who
killed her husband?
That's the question, isn't
it, at the middle of the maze.
[ominous music]

Jesus.
She's delusional.
And all of this, as
I said, is harassment.
Now, she needs to back off before I
lodge a formal complaint with
someone higher up than you.
I'll make sure she does.
I am not letting this go.
Simon, is it all in place?
We're here.
Okay.
I'll be there when it goes down.
If it goes down.
Do not go to the station and
do not go anywhere but home.
And do not try and contact Mr.
Staunton or his wife again.
Boss
We will talk in the morning.
Now do as I say, Mallory.
[ominous music]

[sighs] Shit!
[sighs]
[somber music]

All clear?
All good.
All but these bloody ants.
Heads up.
[suspenseful music]

There she is. We're set.
Stand by.

Wait for my go.
Go. Go.
Go. Go.
Police!
Don't move!
Do not move.
Stay where you are.
Hey!
Hey, mate, stop!
[groaning]
I said stop!
Hey, get back!
[groans]
Move!
What the hell?
He's supposed to be in the morgue.
[suspenseful music]

Mm.
Oh, god.
[sighs]
[phone alerting]
Shit.
Shit.
Damn it.
[sighs]
What happened?
Oh, you should have seen it.
He came at me.
But it was Sarge that dicked him.
Snapes' brother.
And what, he's a twin?
Only difference is a little birthmark.
And he's refusing to say anything apart
from "guilty as charged."
We'll see about that.
You, with me.
Oh, shit.
You have already admitted guilt.
So why don't you just tell us.
Why did you target Ivanovich?
Okay, one comment.
That prick killed my brother.
Yeah, but this wasn't just
revenge for Doug, was it?
Who told you he killed your brother?
It was the same person
who told you we were gonna
find the evidence, wasn't it?
Who told you about the drums?
- I want a lawyer.
- Who was it?
Anais.
It was Luke Staunton, wasn't it?
Just say it.
- Say it!
Detective.
[intense music]

Anais, what's going on?
No fucking comment.
Look, the boss is on a rampage.
I've just had a few strips torn off me.
I'm sorry.
Mallory.
Sit.
[sighs]
I've written Luke
Staunton a formal apology
Apology?
And given him my
assurances that all this
harassment is going to stop.
[sighs]
I've also given Detective
Delaney a bollocking
and flagged his file.
Why?
He willfully disobeyed me by allowing
you to interview Alan Souter,
which brings me to you.
Everything in your
record, Anais, tells me
you're a good detective.
So I'm forced to question
why it's who suddenly
seems to have lost the plot.
Len Snapes didn't do
this off his own bat.
Someone tipped him off.
It's solved, Mallory.
It's a daisy chain.
Jack Laidlaw was collateral damage when
Ivanovich killed Doug Snapes.
Then Ivanovich was
killed by Len Snapes.
Yes.
But someone had to have
fed him the information,
both about Ivanovich and about
us checking the fuel drums.
And Luke Staunton is the only
person who knew about that.
I thought he was going to deal
with the drums on his own,
but clearly he hand
pulled it off to Len.
You don't know that.
Think about it, Boss.
Why was Len in town?
Why is he scared now, refusing to say
anything except "no comment"?
He has said enough.
He's admitted guilt. Listen, you
have an outstanding
question to deal with.
The same one you've been
asking for some time.
Who's pulling the strings?
Who's behind all of this?
You're still convinced
it's Luke Staunton, yes?
I am.
Yes.
But you still don't have any evidence.
There is maybe one
thing that I'm working on.
Otherwise, it's all circumstantial,
connected to other things.
The things I've explicitly told
you to leave alone but you've
continued to look into.
It's very hard to ignore instinct.
Yes, but instinct is not evidence.
You make a move without hard evidence,
it'll all come crashing down.
I'm formally instructing you to desist.
You're not to ruffle any of
Mr. Staunton's feathers again.
Do you understand?
Yes, Boss.
Yes.
Informally, I think you
should trust those instincts.
But tread bloody carefully, Anais.
And keep me fully informed.
Clear?
- Clear?
- Yes.
Yes, clear.
Yes.
All right.
As far as the others are concerned,
you just got a bollocking, too.
That's all, Detective.
Okay.
[somber music]

[knock on door]
Come in.
Hey.
Hi.
Have you got a minute?
Uh-huh.
Uh-huh.
If it's about Mr. Ivanovich,
I'm still waiting on blood.
Oh, no, no, no, it's not about that.
We've pretty much wrapped that up.
Okay.
Um, I don't know why I'm doing this.
I just sort of feel like I
should or I don't know.
Um, I had sex with someone.
I don't, um, don't regret it.
It was fine.
But I just felt like I
should be honest about it.
Um, there are so many lies.
There are so many hidden
things around me all the time.
And I just didn't want there to
be anything hidden between us.
I don't know why.
It's not like we're in a
relationship or anything.
No.
But I like you, Anais.
Yeah.
I like you, too.
And, you know, maybe
that that could be if,
um, it could just be the sex.
'Cause I'm just not really up for
the emotional complications.
I just can't really do them right now.
Okay.
Okay.
I will, um
I'll bear that in mind.
Okay.
I'm gonna go now.
Okay.
[door closes]
[somber music]

[doorbell rings]
Hi, Mom.
Anais.
Have you been sleeping in?
Uh, yes, something like that.
Are you all right?
Yes.
I just haven't been getting much sleep.
Oh, sweetheart.
I'm sorry.
[sobs]
Ah, normal relations.
Of course.
Um I love you, Mom,
and I need your help.
Okay?
I have to make sense of
this, and my every instinct
is telling me that you can help me.
Mom.
Don't do this.
[somber music]

[exhales sharply]
