What the heck? He's not diving at all.
It can't be that he's scared, right?
He's not used to it yet.
Not the flat platform, or the feel of the concrete.
Or even having an audience.
But look at those muscles.
What a jump!
That's so high.
Zero points for the entry though!
That splash is no good at all.
It's low.
And the water is shallow and tastes
like chemicals.
I guess there are always people better than you.
What?
I've never seen such dynamic diving before.
I'll give you that, but
But what?
-You won't win with that.
-What?
This isn't the ocean. It's a pool.
I can't decide which one is more amazing.
Did you see that? That was a standard dive.
What a boring jump.
Anybody could do that.
Why's everything so small here?
Winning here wouldn't even bring me
any satisfaction.
Yoichi's diving is perfect.
Okitsu isn't at that level yet,
but he has a dynamic quality
Yoichi lacks.
I wonder what I have.
Too slow!
Why did you stop at one?
Um, I
Speak up.
I thought I was too slow.
Too slow? What was?
When I see the five-meter platform there,
I won't make it unless I've finished
my second flip.
-Try it again for me.
-Okay.
Did you see the platform this time?
Yes, that's why I spun around quickly.
Just like a flying bird spreading its wings
Over the blue ocean
Searching for a dream I've yet to have
Fly about through trial and error
The sun rises and falls again
I want to change that mundane reality
The smell of boundless summer
Even in my hands
I'm sad without you here
And the sun is lonely too
Being in the middle of you
Having learned the sad lie
A map of the future appearing in the sky
A future that changes without you
I tried to forget you by hiding behind my laughter
A view that cannot be seen from here
A view that can only be seen from here
Open up the canvas of my heart
And paint with the true colors only you can see
I have a proposal for all of you.
There will be a large training camp
in Beijing this August.
It's a two-week training camp that gathers
talented teenage divers from all over Asia.
Only three boys and three girls are accepted.
There will be qualifiers held in Tatsumi
to choose those members.
The Japan Swimming Federation is planning to
train Olympic athletes from among the six.
When are these qualifiers?
July 29th.
-July?
-Yes.
There's only three and a half months.
But if there's any hope of getting you
no-names qualified for the Olympics,
while it may be a little rough, it's our best chance.
Although, you're really going to have to step it up.
What's that mean?
-Sakai.
-Yes?
I want you doing a three-and-a-half
front somersault at the qualifiers.
Three-and-a-half?! There's no way I could
But there's only 18 months until the Tokyo Olympics.
While you've made great strides
in the last month,
there are still many more out there
better than you.
In a competition where kids from all over Japan
are competing tooth and nail,
how else are we supposed to showcase
Tomoki Sakai's diving?
Well
Three-and-a-half.
If you can do a three-and-a-half, something
only a handful of middle-schoolers have done before,
then the judges will take notice.
I promise that you will see it reflected
in your scores.
This is a nightmare.
Sakai.
Sakai!
-Yes!
-You'll do it, won't you?
You can do it.
That's what your body is telling me.
Building all that muscle
has given your rotations more speed.
It's the result of your independent training.
It's also given you more time
to adjust your entry.
So, I know you can do it.
-I'll do it.
-Good.
-Get ready to work hard for it.
-Okay.
-Did you hear that, Okitsu?
-Huh?
You should be prepared too.
If you don't want to lose to a kid
in middle school.
That goes for the rest of you too.
You haven't forgotten?
If one of you isn't chosen
to become an Olympic athlete,
then MDC will be shut down.
So this is for MDC, huh?
In other words, you want to send us
to the Olympics for MDC's sake.
Or is it for your dead grandfather?
Or is it to protect your own job?
Yes, it's for MDC's sake,
but it's also for my grandfather
and my own self-interest as well.
But so what?
What do you mean?
Fujitani, you said it earlier.
-You wanted to go to the Olympics.
-Of course.
For whose sake?
My own.
That's right. All you need to worry about
are your own feelings, not mine.
If you're the ones going to the Olympics,
then the praise and glory you earn there
are all your own.
Don't forget that.
Yoichi!
Somebody call an ambulance!
Hurry!
How do you feel?
Your mother thinks you should be ready
to get back to practice soon.
-But
-But what?
I feel pretty much better,
but my legs start shaking
when I look at a platform.
-I don't think I'm ready yet.
-Okay.
But there won't be much point to practice
until you show up.
Everyone is still pretty traumatized by your accident.
They're scared to dive.
If you quit diving here,
nobody else will be able to overcome that.
So
So please, Yoichi. Come to practice.
For MDC's sake.
There is a wind blowing.
It is giving MDC a second chance.
I want to ride this wind.
I will ride it.
If you've got the will,
then continue to climb to the top.
From up there, you will get a view only you can see.
Too slow. You're tucking way too late.
You have to grab your shins
as soon as you enter your rotation.
Okay!
Your read is slightly off.
Throw your arms out about half a second sooner.
Look up about three more centimeters
during your approach.
Okay!
Listen, there's no point in doing this
just to say you've tried.
If you're going to do this,
you need to succeed.
-I'm counting on you.
-Okay.
-You seem pretty enthusiastic, Tomo.
-Yeah.
It's really hard, but it's also fun!
Must be nice to have your own personal coach.
What? It's not like that.
She's all of our coach.
Let's all do our best.
Sacchin, where's Ryo and Reiji?
-They just left.
-No way.
They're probably waiting outside.
Oh, right.
Huh? Ryo! Reiji!
It's time to go off on your own, kid.
Hey, Chikuwa.
What do you think is going on
with Ryo and Reiji?
Are you two still in the lobby?
Let's go home together.
Did I say something wrong?
Hey!
Thanks.
INCOMING CALL FROM MIU
Hello? What's wrong?
-I could ask you the same, Tomo.
-What do you mean?
You sound a little down. Did something happen?
Yeah, a few things.
Oh, I see.
Okay, I'll cheer you up then!
What?
The weather is supposed to be great tomorrow.
Yeah?
I've got a big surprise for you!
It'll just be a little longer.
It's not that I like cooking or anything,
but after ten years of being divorced,
it's something you just get good at.
Time to put in the cod.
Did you know the character for cod is made by writing
the character for fish and snow?
I had no idea!
All right, it's almost ready to eat!
Hey, are you even listening?!
God, you talk a lot.
I told you, I've been divorced ten years.
Obviously I'm going to start talking to myself.
Now I grate some daikon radish
over it to make it snow.
And there you have it,
snow stew!
This is a special treat, just so you know.
It's to commemorate
the start of us living together.
But it's so great that Tsugaru has such a nice
local specialty like this snow stew.
You Tokyo people just decided to name it that.
It's just a regular stew for us.
Man, why can't you be nicer?
You know, you should talk to the others more
during practice.
I didn't come here to talk.
I mean, that's true,
but you don't know anything about diving yet.
You could learn something from them.
Like what? What they're doing is child's play.
Then why did you come to Tokyo?
None of your business.
It's fine. You can tell me anything.
You don't have to hold back.
Then
Oh, that's a little unexpected.
What is it?
This ain't the season for stew.
Sorry.
Come on. Eat up.
God, this is boring.
Ta-da!
What do you think? I made it with my mom.
It looks amazing!
Thanks. It's from the top ten favorite side dish
survey I gave you before.
There's rolled egg, fried chicken, sausage,
spaghetti, hamburger,
fried rice, fried noodles, rice ball,
cream croquette, French fries.
Isn't that a lot of carbs?
-It's not bad if it's just once in a while!
-I guess not.
Mom told me while we were making it.
She said that you were a nice boy.
That she could tell from looking
at your top ten.
-Okay then.
-I was right!
-I knew it.
-Knew what?
My mom and I had a bet on
what you'd pick first.
Mom said rice ball,
but I knew you'd go for the hamburger.
That so?
Hey, Miu.
Huh? What is it?
Do you ever feel like you're being fenced in?
Fenced in?
I'm not sure if I can describe it,
but it feels like you're being penned
inside a really small space.
Whenever I think about having to live
inside there for the rest of my life,
I get really anxious.
-But
-But?
But then I had a thought.
I might be able to break free with diving.
My coach told me
that if I strive for the top,
I'll reach a view only I can see.
And that I had what it took.
That's why I want to escape my pen.
I want to leap out of this small
and confined world I'm in now.
That's the thought I had.
Sorry.
I know it's probably boring to hear.
It's okay.
I think it's great that you view diving like that.
-Really?
-Yeah!
I'm sure you'll be able to overcome
the things that keep most of us back.
I think that watching you do that
makes us feel like we've overcome something
ourselves too.
Thanks.
Let's eat.
Yeah!
Coming through!
There will be nothing keeping me back.
I will break out of my tiny pen
with this three-and-a-half somersault!
You can make it around
with those eyes of yours.
Ah, dang it!
All right, hurry up and get out.
Man, Yoichi is so great.
He's nothing special.
