DOORBELL RINGS
Hey, Dad.
Just wanted a hug.
ENGINE REVS
You know it's not too late?
PHONE CHIMES
Everything all right?
NOTIFICATION WHOOSHES
It will be.
Are you sure you wanna do this?
PHONE RINGS
PHONE RINGS,
MUFFLED SHOU
RADIO: 'And you're still listening
to Just A Gardener.
'Well, it's been one of the wettest
Aprils since records began'
Thank you, mate.
HE CLEARS THROA
Hello. Long time, no see.
Mm-hm.
HE EXHALES
Sorry about that.
Bus was late.
It's all right. You're here now.
You want me to..?
Please. OK.
Right.
Yeah, I needed it.
I've just started studying a course.
Long-distance learning.
Psychology.
Mm-hm.
Quite the frenzy in the press.
And social media.
Every Tom, Dick and Harriet
tramping all over the place,
playing at being amateur sleuths.
Murder-suicide. He pushed her in,
or maybe she pushed him in.
Right now,
it's a missing persons enquiry.
Nothing to indicate
a crime has been committed.
Papers are saying
that the force at Brindleton
aren't quite up to the case.
Mm-hm.
London's here.
And five
..four three two.
Let's see how unwelcome
they make us feel this time.
And one.
DCI Ellis and DS Harper.
Mm.
DCI Cotton, and this is DI Dent.
Archie. So glad you're here.
Good to meet you both.
So, you've got victim recovery dogs
and divers
searching a three-mile area
from here to Ashervale? Correct.
We're using side-scan sonar,
underwater cameras
and ground-penetrating radar.
It's not enough. Make it five miles.
Go as far as Durston.
Above-average rainfall
for the time of year,
and the river is running
faster than ever, yeah?
Er, some walkers
reported them missing?
Yeah, they came across the camper
and thought it was a bit odd
that it was left the way it was.
And any sightings of the couple?
Several reports
of Oz and Rachel out walking.
A couple of them remembered
Rachel's distinctive yellow jacket,
and one saw them near the river.
There's a danger spot
where people go.
We checked it out
and found drops of blood.
None of it makes sense.
Tell me about the phone
you also found.
Right, yeah.
Well, erm,
we found Oz Hoffman's phone
the day after
they were reported missing.
And then yesterday,
Rachel Hoffman's was located here.
But you must have searched here
as they were reported missing.
We didn't find the phone
to begin with,
so we moved the search elsewhere.
Er Actually, it was me.
I moved the search elsewhere.
And then a local kid,
Rory Summerfield,
came back after we'd gone,
and he found it.
That's why we're back now,
double-checking
in case we missed anything else.
And Rachel's phone had blood on it?
Yes.
Clearly, someone had tried
to unlock it but got blocked.
And Tech are on to it now.
We also found a strip of ripped
material on a branch over there.
We've sent it to Forensics.
Why come here?
Pretty modest for a honeymoon. Mm.
Maybe they wanted it that way.
Still, all a bit strange, though.
There's a good boy. Come on.
DOG WHINES
Cooper! Not so fast!
DOG BARKS
Not so fast, Cooper!
Cooper!
BARKING INTENSIFIES
DOG WHINES
What? Is this some kind of test?
You tell me.
You're the psychologist these days.
Right, well
Nothing's out of place.
Nothing disturbed.
No sign of intrusion.
They left the camper door open,
so they clearly weren't planning
on leaving or must've felt safe.
Ah. Three wine glasses.
They were expecting someone.
Who never came.
OFFICER: Ma'am!
DI DENT: Is it a body?
Part of one.
What's the tattoo?
Hand severed at the wrist.
Not a clean cut, by the look of it.
Tattoo's of a two-headed dog, maybe?
Hand looks male.
Could be Oz Hoffman. No.
PHONE RINGS
The wedding photos
What've we got?
No tattoos on his right hand.
And Oz Hoffman's father is Maori.
He has a ta moko,
the traditional tattoo markings,
shoulder to wrists.
The hand belongs to someone else.
So we're now looking for
three missing persons,
one of whom has a missing hand.
What the hell happened here?
Get this area cordoned off.
Get CSI down here.
We need everybody
to back up the way they came.
They've found a body
at Radley Basin.
Four miles downriver,
beyond your search parameter.
It wasn't found by a police diver.
No.
It was a member of the public.
This is getting out of control.
You should be up there
doing something.
I know it's her.
It's obvious it's her.
OFFICER: We need confirmation
In the water
..it's Rachel. I know it is!
CAMERA CLICKS
She's wearing the yellow waterproof!
MUFFLED: Can you describe
how you found the body?
I didn't. Cooper did.
We were walking along the river,
and he must have seen something
in the water.
He ran over and started barking.
There was no way I could
get to the body, so I rang you guys.
And do you live locally?
No.
Norfolk. I saw the news
and followed the story on socials.
Rachel and Oz seemed so lovely.
They had their whole lives
in front of them.
I mean, you have to do something,
don't you?
Do you? With all due respect,
and grateful though we are for your
discovery, it's police business.
Of course, but you did also
put out an appeal asking the public
for information, didn't you?
Look, all I'm trying to do here
is help.
You said your dog
discovered the body
so he wasn't on a lead.
Sorry, I didn't see the signs.
Path is here.
The body there, behind that bush.
I was chucking a ball for him.
No ball now.
SHE SCOFFS
Must have floated away.
We'll need a statement.
Of course.
Right, yeah.
If you could follow me,
we'll take your name and address
We'll get the divers
to continue looking downstream.
Try Oxbow Riffle
between here and Ashervale first.
Shallow, rocky and a horseshoe bend
in the river.
I'm surprised one body made it
past there. I doubt two would.
Will do.
DOG BARKS
Check her out. Get her prints
and DNA for elimination.
CAR HORNS HONKING
OK. Oh, God.
How the hell did word get out?
MAN: Just tell us, is that Rachel?
People will wanna know.
Welcome to my world.
DRONE WHIRRS
DCI COTTON SIGHS
Now what?!
Oi! Summerfield.
Kully, someone,
can you get Rory out of here?
Rory,
you know you shouldn't be here.
Summerfield,
the kid that found the phone. Yes.
Obsessed with the case.
Citizen journalism, they call it.
You got here fast.
Just following socials.
It's a body, right? Rachel Hoffman?
I gather you found a phone?
Yeah, and?
Is it one of them or not?
Not for me to say.
HORN HONKING
DISTORTED AUDIO
OFFICER 1: Stop!
Stop! You can't go any further.
You have to stop, please, sir.
OFFICER 2:
Sir, you can't park there!
I need you to stop right here.
OK, OK. Who's in charge here?
Sir
Get off me.
I don't I don't need any of this!
Move back.
I just want to know
what's happening.
DCI COTTON: Mr Rees-Mortimer,
I'm sorry, you can't go any further.
Is it true?
AUDIO SHARPENS
Have you found Rach?
Hey! Stop that!
You get these vultures
away from here.
I want to see my daughter!
Mr Rees-Mortimer.
I'm sorry to confirm
the body of a woman has been found.
Look, I understand
how distressing this is for you
..but first and foremost,
we need to secure the scene.
I'm so sorry
we couldn't let you hold her
..but you will be able to later.
Will I be able
to get her belongings?
If they're not required
as part of the investigation.
About your son-in-law
He's no son-in-law of mine.
He killed Rachel.
You know that, right?
And that bastard's still out there.
Can I ask Mr Rees-Mortimer
..why why would Oz Hoffman
kill your daughter
three days into their marriage?
Because it wasn't right.
He knew it. She knew it.
And I definitely knew it.
Like I said on the news,
Oz is trouble.
He's a waste-of-space chancer.
How did Rachel and Oz meet?
He was over here on work,
and they started dating.
They split last summer,
and he went back to Australia.
I thought I'd seen the back
of him but he came back for her.
Presumably because he was in love?
He conned her.
He wasn't good enough for her.
Rachel was a star.
She lit up any room! You ask any
And you check him out cos I'm
telling you, there's dirt on him.
He was just after her money -
my money, my bloody money!
And what brought Rachel and Oz here?
Memories.
We came here every summer
when Rachel was in her teens.
Before her mum passed
..it was our happy place
..our golden time.
Yeah, and she loved it here.
Like a second home to her.
I suppose she knew people here?
Yeah, a few of the local youths.
We'll need a list of names.
I've got to go with my daughter.
Boss? Hmm?
Rachel's father has a point.
Oz has got form.
He left Australia
under something of a cloud,
some kind of financial impropriety -
fraud.
Look, it's too complicated for me,
but
Marriages may not be made in heaven,
but
even the bad ones
tend to make it past three days. OK.
But Oz is still a suspect, right?
In on it with the one-handed man?
Possibly.
So, what brought Rachel back?
Right, why start a new life
with your new husband
right back where you were
as a teenager
when you could go
anywhere in the world?
Maybe it's the place
she felt happiest.
Maybe she wanted to reconnect
with her past.
So, where to next?
The Swelt where it all began.
What's wrong with all these people?
I mean,
what's missing from their lives
that possible death fills a hole?
Says the murder detective.
Yeah, but it's our job, isn't it?
I mean, we get paid to do it.
OK, that is two pulled pork.
There you go, mate.
Ta, mate.
Two more coming up.
There you go, my love.
Enjoy.
Smells good.
Very smoky.
Very opportunistic.
We've got anything you want
Every cloud, I guess.
..ladies and gents.
Yes?
You're very enterprising.
Well, people still need to eat,
even in the middle of a tragedy.
You're local?
Yeah, born and bred.
Maybe you knew Rachel
from when she visited in her teens.
I did, yeah.
How's the search going?
Progressing.
So, had you seen her recently?
No. No, not for ages.
Can I get you guys anything?
Don't let me stop you.
So, er, this is
the offending stretch of water.
Mm.
With picnic tables.
A beauty spot and a death trap.
Double whammy.
Mm-hm.
So, no-one who's ever fallen in
has survived.
Yeah, The Swelt has 100% death rate.
That's why they call it The Swelt.
From the Old English - "to die".
Or more accurately,
"to cause to die".
I, er I just looked it up.
This is where they found Oz's phone.
Yeah, phone was dead.
Mm-hm. But maybe he'd taken it out
and placed it there.
Tech accessed it.
The last two photos were selfies
taken at 16:42 three days ago.
No hint that anything was wrong.
And then there's the blood.
PHONE RINGS
Hello?
Boss?
You're not gonna believe this.
Found Oz Hoffman's body.
It's badly beaten
and with a shotgun wound.
And you'll never guess where.
Oxbow Riffle.
DCI COTTON: OK, so, assuming this
case doesn't get any more bizarre,
unless Rachel Hoffman
killed her husband,
there's a killer still out there,
which is the assumption
Joe Public are making
and getting more hysterical
by the second.
Archie?
So
Erm, shotgun blast to the chest.
Not clear yet
whether bruising to the face
is from a beating
or being thrown round underwater.
Oh, yeah, and both hands intact.
And the severed hand?
Path are examining,
and we're checking
with local tattooists,
you know, to see if anyone
recognises the image.
What is it, anyway?
Some sort of dog or fox?
It's actually a twin-headed jackal,
possibly representing
the god of change and time.
He could see into the past with one
face and the future with the other.
We do have some new information.
Separate to the fabric
we found earlier near the camper,
divers checked the river
near where the body was found
and came across this.
A white wedding garter
with Rachel Hoffman's DNA on it.
Sorry, who?
Who wears a wedding garter
three days into their wedding?
She wasn't wearing it.
It was found caught on a branch
50 metres down river.
Right.
Printer fob.
Oh! Erm
So, erm, we have a list
of firearm certificates
for everyone in the area
with a shotgun.
Most farmers have one,
so it's quite a list.
And we're checking CCTV
for vehicles coming into
and out of the area
since the Hoffmans disappeared.
Also check details
for cars coming into the village
from the days before
Rachel and Oz went missing.
Before?
Suspect doesn't have to be local.
If outsiders are involved,
logically, they were here
before the disappearance.
Recent events
don't always unlock the answers.
Sometimes,
you need to dig a little deeper.
Rachel Hoffman used to be in the
local band here - The Cold Turkeys.
They were together
for quite a while.
Toured the country. They were close.
That's an article from
the local newspaper 15 years ago.
Gerry Rees-Mortimer and his family
used to visit every summer
when Rachel was a teen.
Look, the point is,
she had lots of friends here.
You didn't know?
Before my time.
And what with all the chaos,
we just hadn't got round
to looking into her past.
Let's start now.
There's a list of names
of the band members
also on the list
Rachel's father gave us,
including the local chef guy.
Yeah.
That's Alex Scanlan, local DJ.
Yeah, the band leader.
And Abbie Summerfield.
Summerfield.
Like Rory Summerfield,
phone and drone kid.
Abbie's his big sister.
More like a mother, really.
Both spent time in care
but came good.
She hooked up with
former young offender Kane Harrison,
and they run a thriving motocross
business on the edge of town.
Get me everything you can
on all of them.
The band, what they got up to,
schools, teachers, fans -
send me anything and everything
you get.
Will do. Absolutely.
Good.
Let's get to it.
Boss.
Lydia Green,
the woman who found Rachel's body,
there is no sign of her in Norfolk.
Right.
Nice to meet you, I'm DS Harper.
There's a file here
Sorry we weren't up to speed
on the band.
No need to apologise.
You know,
one blip doesn't define your career.
DCI COTTON SIGHS
Doesn't it?
It's quite a blip.
I've known worse. Had worse.
Chalk it up, call it experience,
and
..keep on keeping on.
Do you want me to face the press
or you?
Oh, I wouldn't deny you
that pleasure.
Why, thank you (!)
Talk to me about phone coverage.
Oh, it's fine here
but a bit patchy out and about.
Is that a problem?
Probably not.
I just need to stay in contact
with the outside world, that's all.
In case someone
wants to get in contact.
You can always
give them our number here.
Thank you.
And I'll need to speak
to your pathologist.
I'll get Archie to take you.
By the way, it's Val.
Val Cotton.
It's been a nightmare.
Normally, we just have to deal
with traffic jams,
low-level crime
and stolen farm machinery.
Nothing like this.
How long have you been here?
Two years.
Transferred from Warrington.
I wanted to be a footballer,
but then everyone does, really
I don't know,
that's what I'm saying.
I can't remember why I came here.
It's just through here.
Nice one.
BEEP
Thanks.
Cheers.
PHONE RINGS
Dent.
Harper!
Sorry.
Hi, heard you were coming.
Sorry for the mess. A bit busy.
Sure. We'd, er,
love to know about the severed hand.
And the gunshot wound
that killed Oz Hoffman.
Starting with the hand,
the size, shape and hair on the
fingers indicates a male right hand.
Tattoo is fresh, done on the days
before the hand was removed.
And the wound?
Hard to be sure,
but from the decomp,
I'd say three days max.
That combined with examination
of the wound margins
indicates teeth.
Teeth? Erm, so,
the the hand was bitten off?
Er, no. The serrated teeth
of an animal trap.
Severed and lacerated ligaments
indicate some struggle,
as if the hand were ripped off
completely by the victim
trying to escape.
SORAYA GRUNTS
Hello.
Baba's awake. Just started kicking.
Enjoy.
As for the gunshot wound,
confirmed shotgun
point-blank to the chest. Right.
At the water's edge?
I reckon.
Some water in the lungs, so he was
still alive when he went in.
Ooh! Hello, there's another one.
That was CSI.
There were previously unidentified
prints in the camper van
that didn't belong
to either honeymooner.
Previously?
Not any more.
They match prints taken
from the woman who found Rachel.
Lydia Green? What are her prints
doing in the camper van?
OFFICER: Protocol that there's
no phones allowed in this area.
Just take a seat.
Thanks for coming in.
No problem.
Although, I'm not sure
why I'm here, if I'm honest.
DS HARPER: Well, you're here
for a couple of reasons.
One, there is no record
of you living in Norfolk.
Sorry.
Sorry. I gave the officer
my details as they are now.
But everything on record's probably
under my married name, Ford.
I only switched back recently
when my divorce came through.
We'll check.
You didn't know the Hoffmans,
I take it?
Course not.
Never heard of them
before they went missing.
And when did you come over
from Norfolk? Yesterday.
Why?
Did you visit their camper van?
Why are you asking?
Oh, I might have gone by, yeah.
But I'm not the only one,
have you seen it out there?
Well, yours are the only prints
and DNA all over the van.
I don't believe you found
Rachel's body by accident.
I told you what happened.
My dog, Cooper, found her.
Hmm.
SCOFFS
I don't know what you expect me
to say.
Truth would be good for a start.
CHAIR SCRAPES
Cooper is a spaniel.
Spaniels have a good sense of smell.
THAT'S how your dog
found Rachel's body.
He knew Rachel's scent.
You went to the camper van and stole
something to pick up the trail.
Say a white wedding garter.
You knew the police had
had dogs out.
Social media tells you they're
focusing on a three-mile radius,
So YOU start searching outside that.
Only you don't want to get caught
with something of Rachel's on you,
so you throw it in the river,
hoping to get rid of it.
You need to work WITH us, Lydia.
OK.
OK.
I'm trying to become
a true crime podcaster.
So, when I heard
about the camper van,
I thought it would make sense
to go up there last night.
It's a taped-off crime scene
with officers guarding it.
Which part of that
do you not understand?
There was no-one there.
They'd all gone.
Look, I was just trying to help.
Yeah, help yourself go viral
on "the gram", hmm?
So?
It takes time and effort, you know.
Two people are dead, Lydia.
They are dead, and you're trying
to get famous through them?
Don't judge!
It's not like you lot are exactly
showering yourselves in glory.
You wanna know who did it?
We're not interested in speculation.
The father. Gerry Rees-Mortimer.
He's a bloody fat-cat capitalist
of the highest order.
I doubt that would stand up in court
as proof of murder.
You need to go back home
to Norfolk today.
Or we will charge you with
perverting the course of justice
by tampering with evidence!
Your choice.
I, er, left Lydia Green
to be processed, slowly. Good.
And I'll go over her socials,
track under her married name.
Rachel Hoffman's financials.
She was closing her bank account.
Well, maybe she planned
to get a new one
or a joint one with her husband.
Fresh start.
Er Well, as soon
as she finished honeymooning
in teen nostalgia land, right?
Right.
Oh, I got a text, by the way,
off the owner
of the cottage we're renting.
Check-in's any time we like.
Let's get over there.
Right, I'll, erm,
I'll get some supplies.
Any requests?
No
BUSY TONE
VOICEMAIL: 'You have reached'
GRACE: 'Grace.'
'Please leave your message
after the tone.'
BEEP
Grace. Hi. Me.
I'm away on work for a bit.
The signal isn't great,
but I'll do my best.
Here if you need.
PHONE RINGS
'How was day one?'
Welcoming. Makes a change.
CHUCKLES
We must be slipping.
That said, two bodies
is quite an escalation.
Media coverage just went through
the roof.
I'll know to avoid it, then.
'The local force weren't coping
when it was a missing persons.
'You're gonna have to see them
through this.'
They'll cope.
'Any insights so far?'
DOOR OPENS, CLOSES
Working on it.
'What was that?
Everything all right?'
Harper with shopping.
Best go.
'OK. Keep me in the loop.' Mm.
Well, you clearly don't think we're
gonna solve this case any time soon.
Yeah, I erred on the side
of getting everything.
Maybe leave the unpacking.
We're going to The Boar And Brisket.
In the days since her wedding,
Rachel Hoffman contacted
all her former band members.
Alex Scanlan, Abbie Summerfield
and our chef friend, Leo Braxton.
Let's start with Mr Smoky.
Who said he hadn't seen her in ages.
Maybe he hadn't.
But she rang him twice -
once the day she arrived,
once the following afternoon.
And he rang her back.
Come on, Harper.
Yeah, coming.
According to the bio
on this place's website,
hotshot chef Leo Braxton
left the area in his early 20s,
went to London
and worked his way up to head chef
at a swanky West End restaurant.
And yet he came back.
Hm.
Let's find out why.
Let's see how Dent's getting on
with cars in and out of the area.
Get him to check that one.
PHONE BEEPS
It's Gerry Rees-Mortimer's.
Archie it's Chet.
Dent's checking the cars.
Said he'll get back to us.
Ooh.
WHISTLES
"Orange wine".
What is orange wine
when it's at home, eh?
Talking of being at home.
Hey. Can I get you a table?
We're fine, thanks.
Need to ask a few questions.
Sure. Yeah. Fire away.
Old friends, I see?
Yeah. Erm, we have rooms here,
and Gerry's staying.
We've known each other a long time.
So, I was just commiserating
with him about Rachel.
You said you didn't see her.
That's right.
But she rang you twice.
Yeah.
She She wanted to organise
a reunion of sorts.
Wanted us to meet Oz.
I-I didn't go.
Because?
Because I'm busy, for one.
And all this stuff, it was
it was a long time ago, you know.
Just let the past be the past
and all that.
The Cold Turkeys.
You performed at local venues and
festivals around the country. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, that's right.
But, erm you know
it was no big deal.
You know, being in a band,
it's just one of those things you do
when you're young, innit?
Yeah, so, er,
this is your rock and roll now?
That's right.
Hm.
Look, to be honest,
I find all that band stuff a
little bit cringeworthy now, anyway.
You know,
I was just a crappy bassist.
It was, erm
It was Alex and Rachel,
they were the real talent.
Yeah, he wrote all the songs, and
she sang them.
You did ring her back, though.
Yeah. Yeah, but just to apologise,
you know,
for not being able to make it.
But it just went straight
to voicemail.
PHONE CHIMES
Oh, sorry.
Er, look, I should really
be getting on, excuse me.
Boss?
Boss?
Dent sent this,
with a message to check the date
that Gerry's car arrived.
Four days ago.
Yeah, he was here
before his daughter went missing.
Mr Rees-Mortimer?
We'd like a word.
We found Oz.
GERRY: Yeah, I heard.
Shot in the chest.
Point-blank range.
You have a shotgun licence.
Now, you can't really think that I
killed my daughter and her husband?
Well, given that you came
to the village
the day before
Rachel and Oz disappeared
and that you're very open
about not liking your son-in-law.
If I killed him, would I really
slag him off in public?
You might if you wanted people
to think he killed your daughter.
It's not exactly your, er,
typical father-of-the-bride
behaviour, is it?
To follow the happy couple
on their honeymoon.
So, why come?
To be around in the hope
that Rachel saw sense.
And did they know you were here?
Did you see her? Make her see sense?
No.
But I might have done
if I'd had the chance.
Those summers you spent here
We'd rent a place for a month,
and Rachel would either
stay on longer
or she'd come back
and stay with friends. Boy friends?
Come on. Teenagers, bands.
Three summers between the age
of 15 and 18.
Time alone, parent-free.
Yeah, sure.
But when Jane passed,
the band and the summers ended
and she never went back.
She went to uni,
she went on to London.
Life moves on.
Rachel was closing
her bank accounts
..to start a new life in Australia.
What, you're asking me?
I had no idea of their plans
beyond them coming back here.
It doesn't really matter much now,
does it?
Do you believe him?
I believe he cared for his daughter,
but he's a man who likes
to get his own way.
Yeah, you don't get to be
as successful as he is
without a ruthless streak.
So, what are we thinking?
Like father, like daughter?
Well, find out what Rachel did
when she worked for him.
And check the bookings history
here
how he got so tight
with Leo Braxton.
Maybe he's stayed here before.
So, where to next?
We need to speak to the other band
members, see what they have to say.
Alex Scanlan's place,
Saddle Park Lane? Let's do it.
Oh, great (!)
Lydia hit the 10,000 mark.
She's thanking her followers.
Gloves.
Yeah.
Hello?
Mr Scanlan?
It's the police.
Boss, in here.
Call Cotton.
And Forensics.
We've got a motive for Alex Scanlon.
Yeah, got it.
So, erm, the, er, break-in
at Scanlan's cottage,
there's nothing much so far.
One thing we have learnt -
the fingerprints
that were all over the place,
floor-to-ceiling,
every nook and cranny
DS HARPER:
In other words, his prints.
..match the ones that are found in
the blood on Rachel Hoffman's phone.
So Alex Scanlan was in the woods
with Rachel's phone.
Which means he might be our amputee.
And makes him our prime suspect.
Or another victim.
On the day of the wedding,
he caught a train to London.
Check his bank details,
see if we can piece together
what he did there.
Well, hang on.
If If he's another victim,
then that means
there's a fourth person involved?
Correct.
Tell me more about Abbie, Rory
and Kane.
Abbie and Rory's parents
were addicts
who ran their own marijuana farm on
what is now the motocross circuit.
Got busted, and both are dead now.
That's why the kids were taken
into care.
Kane was a young offender.
Tell me about him.
Another tough start.
Sexually abused by his father,
turned to drugs,
but he cleaned up his act
when he met Abbie.
Hm, Kane's fine as long
as no-one makes a move on Abbie,
then he gets possessive.
There've been a few scuffles.
Send me everything you have.
On it.
Forensics confirm that the material
strip found near the camper
is often used in motocross gear.
OK.
I can do that, you know.
Oh? I look forward to seeing that.
I was a Formby Beach
Under-11s Junior Champion.
Well, second, actually.
Or seventh. But I got robbed. Mm-hm.
The wind was off the scale that day.
Worse for you than everyone else.
Yeah, it came out of nowhere,
like a tornado.
We're looking for ripped gear.
Already on it.
Who wants to go first?
Er, thanks, but we
We've just had breakfast.
Erm, we're actually
we're here working.
If it's about the drones,
we've told Rory a thousand times.
It's not.
I've checked your posts.
Could do with you on my team.
Rachel and Oz both confirmed dead,
yeah?
Did you know the victims?
Well, you know I did,
otherwise you wouldn't be here.
Me and Rach were mates
back in the day.
We were in a band. We had a laugh,
but I don't think we would have
changed the course of music history.
Or maybe we would.
Had you seen her recently?
Er, yeah, the night before she went
missing, a bunch of us got together.
The Cold Turkeys.
Well, actually, it was just me
and Alex. Leo didn't wanna go.
Rach wanted us to meet Oz,
so we went to the camper.
And what was Oz like?
Yeah. Nice enough.
I know a keeper when I see one.
I'm not sure he wanted to spend
his honeymoon with us, but
And do you see much
of the other band members?
Leo? Do me a favour.
I can't be doing
with all that posh nosh bollocks.
He likes his motocross.
But it doesn't mean I eat
his overpriced food.
I still see Alex, though.
He's still strumming away.
He's all right,
but we've just got a lot
of other things to think about.
Rory clearly hasn't.
There's only one thing on his mind.
Well
there are worse things he could be
obsessing over on that phone.
According to the Land Registry
you own this place. Is that right?
Yeah, we inherited it
off Mum and Dad.
Why, you got a problem with that?
No. No.
Rachel's father said Rachel was
special, would light up any room.
Gerry?
Course he did, the posh, old goat.
Listen, Rachel knew
exactly how to work a room
and be the centre of attention.
No, Rach was monied stunning,
talented, funny.
She had the boys all over her,
which is actually my idea of hell,
present company excepted.
Any boy in particular?
Er, Alex, mainly.
Him and Rach were an item
for three years, I think.
SPRAY CAN RATTLES
Did, er, you go to the camper van?
Me? No.
Not my scene.
Right, the thing is,
we found a strip of material
on a tree near the van.
No?
Any idea how you got that rip
in your jacket?
Uh, that's probably me.
I wear that as well.
It's a bit big for you, isn't it?
Well, not with all
my clothes underneath it, no.
And I knew I was sitting out,
so I layered up.
Must have snagged it.
But the tree
was some way from the camper van.
Why would you snag it there?
Mm, nature called.
HE MOUTHS
Don't get settled.
No, I'm I'm-I'm not.
The school they went to,
Alex won all the music prizes
and was taught by this man.
Name's Foster Lang,
music teacher and band manager.
Presumably he's retired by now?
Retired from teaching early,
don't know why.
He's also the man we saw
in reception yesterday,
the one looking lost and confused.
He has a cottage out on the moors.
Right,
so if Alex Scanlan is our amputee
and he hasn't gone to hospital
And he hasn't gone home.
But he might have gone
to see his old mentor.
Who could be protecting him
or keeping him captive. Mm.
PHONE CHIMES
Oh, great.
We're not the only ones onto Foster.
'You know Gerry, yeah?
'You know Rees-Mortimer'
'Go away!'
'How much did he pay ya?'
'Go away!'
Lydia Green is clearly still here.
'Tell me what he paid you to do.'
'What you talking about?'
That woman.
Yeah, that woman.
There's our man.
Mr Lang?
You're probably aware of everything
that's been happening
around here recently?
A former pupil of yours is missing.
Alex Scanlan.
Alex?
Mm-hm.
We wondered if you'd seen him?
Is he OK?
That's what
we're trying to find out.
Who are you?
What're you doing here?
Call for back-up.
Yeah.
Something happened in there.
He was very drunk.
Alex was drunk?
It weren't my fault.
What happened, Mr Lang?
Alex came on to me.
Do you want to stay here and
I'll go in?
I'll go.
Boss?
Don't go in.
Don't go in, don't
RECORD PLAYER PLAYS

MUSIC STOPS
FLOORBOARD CREAKS
God.
No. Mr Lang, you have to stay here.
There's no-one in there,
but there has been. Right.
And they've bled. A lot.
Blood's dry now.
Dent's on his way. OK.
Mr Lang
It wasn't my fault.
What wasn't your fault, Mr Lang?
Alex was bleeding.
Do you know why?
He must have been in pain.
He must have been scared.
He was screaming. Blood everywhere.
He was here, then he went.
Where?
Is it home or or hospital?
Hospital.
Mr Lang,
if I need to go to hospital,
point me in the direction.
If you go past The Claw
..there's an old graveyard.
Thank you.
Right.
Take him in,
and get all available officers
searching the surrounding area.
And get Forensics
onto the animal trap. Got it.
I'll check the map, find The Claw.
No need. I know where it is.
Right.
Whoa.
Boss?
Mm-hm?
Sorry.
I spoke to Alex Scanlan's tattooist.
He remembers discussing
the double-headed jackal
with the two of them.
Uh, Alex meant it as a symbol
of his bisexuality.
He told the tattooist
that after years of uncertainty,
he was finally coming out.
Do you think that's what
Foster was talking about? Maybe.
You said he discussed it
with the two of them.
Yeah, the tattooist said
Alex wasn't on his own.
Said he had a younger friend
with him. OK.
Hello again, Mr Lang.
I'd like to talk about Alex,
if that's OK?
I'd like to tell you
what I think happened.
Alex was injured in the woods
by the river.
We think his hand was severed
by an animal trap.
He didn't have his phone,
so he went to the home
of the nearest person he knew
..you.
I heard him call.
He kept looking behind,
he was scared.
You let him into the house.
He was bleeding a lot.
He was crying in pain.
I tried to find something
to stop the blood, he collapsed.
He left.
I told him to go. I said
I understand.
Alex recently came out as bisexual.
You mentioned Alex.
You said something about him
making a move on you.
It was at school.
It was nothing, really.
Another teacher saw.
The school mishandled it, and I
resigned in protest
at the way they treated him.
That must have had
a devastating effect on Alex.
It drove him into his shell.
He was sensitive.
He had none of Leo's confidence,
fire and musical talents.
Leo was just the bassist.
And the songwriter.
He wrote songs, too?
Yeah, yeah.
They'd hang out at The Swelt.
Wild. Abbie was the wildest.
Her parents
..she didn't have their support.
Stoned. Drunk, day and night.
And that poor kid,
no more than a baby.
Rory.
I never saw him in clothes,
always naked.
Running around hungry
..his sister trying
to look after him.
It must have been so hard on her.
Who?
Hey.
Foster Lang has problems
with memory, not truth.
Now, Rory Summerfield hasn't posted
since we found Alex Scanlan's body.
So? Well, he must know about it
cos news leaked out,
and it's all over
Lydia Green's account.
Previously, he commented
or liked every post of hers.
Now he's gone quiet.
Or maybe he thinks we've caught
our killer. Case closed.
Which it isn't.
There is no way
we are going to do that!
Is that clear?!
OFFICERS: Yes, Boss.
Sorry. We're just discussing
our media strategy.
The press know about
Alex Scanlan's body
courtesy of our citizen journalists.
They've announced Alex
is the killer,
and they want formal confirmation.
And your team is keen to give it.
The ones that are convinced
it's him.
The logic being?
Well
we think Alex was jealous
of Oz Hoffman
because he stole his girl.
So he takes his revenge,
gets injured in the process,
and bleeds out.
Which, in fairness, could be right.
Exactly.
And we know he met Oz
the other night,
maybe that backfired.
The thing is
Alex and Rachel were first loves,
weren't they?
I mean, they went out together
for three years.
Fifteen years ago.
Yeah, but mobile phone records show
that Rachel and Alex Scanlan
had been ringing each other loads.
Maybe they were fighting?
Or catching up on old times?
Well, there's also
the ripped up photos in his house.
We don't know who ripped them
or who's behind the break-in.
People tend not to break
into their own houses.
I know we're under pressure
to get a result,
no-one knows that more than me.
But we can't confirm
what we don't know for sure.
Testing theories is fine,
useful even
but we don't go public
until we're sure.
Keep working the case.
And not everyone thinks
Alex Scanlan is responsible.
Lydia Green is now
pointing the finger at Foster Lang.
Please tell me where we're at
with that woman.
We contacted every hotel and B&B
in the area -
she's not booked in anywhere.
But we also checked CCTV
from the station car park.
That's her registration.
Nice one, Dent. That's good work.
KNOCK ON DOOR
Alex Scanlan was coming out as bi.
That an issue around here?
We're not the most progressive part
of the country,
but we're not dinosaurs either.
The team are just a bit stretched.
They're bound to be.
Dent's a good copper,
he just doesn't know what's hit him.
Which is why he needs
a strong leader.
Sadly,
we both know this has scapegoat
or demotion written all over it.
You don't know that.
Maybe not.
How are you doing with the signal?
Have you spoken to your?
Daughter. No.
But that's not the signal.
Let's just say I
I wasn't always there for her.
Complicated things, families.
Talking of which, I've emailed you
everything on Abbie,
Rory and their parents' drugs bust.
And Kane.
PHONE CHIMES
So, car is registered
to a Lydia Maddox.
Maddox? Parked up in a field
on the edge of town.
And you will never guess what.
Mm-hm?
She's got history
with Gerry Rees-Mortimer.
Fill me in on the way.
Mm-hm.
Anything in the files
you were looking at?
The Summerfields' bust.
A massive party.
Someone grassed on them -
an anonymous tip-off.
Parents got arrested and
and after that?
Their lives,
the lives of everyone in the band,
were never the same again.
DOG BARKING
This way! This way.
Come on, there's a good boy.
This way.
Good boy, good boy. OK.
Thought we told you to leave.
I just solved your crime for you.
I found Rachel.
Then I led you to old man Foster.
You saw my post, right?
Wrong!
You accused a vulnerable man
of committing a crime
he almost certainly didn't commit.
Oh, come on. He's in on it.
He knew Rachel and her dad
from years ago.
He told me that.
He's an old man with dementia
who used to teach her friends.
He's got nothing to do with
the deaths or Gerry Rees-Mortimer.
Really?
Let's see what the press think.
Don't get holier than thou with me,
I'm skint.
I'm living out of this wreck
for Christ sake.
I'm just trying to get by.
I haven't committed any crime.
Depends on who you talk to,
Ms Maddox.
Gerry Rees-Mortimer's lawyers
seem to think you have.
So he may not know who you are,
but a gagging order
was taken out against you
for another social media account
you ran,
under the name Lydia Maddox,
dedicated to bringing
Gerry Rees-Mortimer down.
You're not trying to be
a podcaster at all.
You're trying to get revenge
on the man who bought your company.
BOUGHT my company?
Who swallowed my company,
bankrupted me and spat me out!
What were you hoping to prove,
Lydia?
That he's corrupt.
That he had something to do
with Rachel's death.
And don't believe
that grieving father act.
He's a fraud.
Why would he kill his daughter?
Because she saw the light.
That's why she stopped working
for him.
Because she hated his corporate
ethos and knew it sucked.
And you know this how?
I spoke to other employees.
Rumour is she had dirt on him.
CAR ENGINE STARTS
What are we looking for?
Not sure yet.
Dent said that these were all
of Rachel's belongings.
Her father seemed very keen
to get them back. Right.
Forensics just confirmed
that the animal trap found
at Foster Lang's house is not
the one used to sever the hand.
OK.
Anything in the ripped photographs?
There is a second set
of unidentified prints.
We've sent fragments off
for analysis.
Traces of an organosulfur compound
no-one recognises.
Well, let me know
if they come back with anything.
Boss?
Mm-hm?
Travel itinerary. One way.
Details of a new
Australian bank account.
Like we thought -
starting a new life.
Uh, Rachel wasn't just coming back
for a trip down memory lane.
She was coming back to say goodbye.
And this was her insurance
in case her father
tried to stop her.
No wonder he wants
her belongings back.
What is it?
A draft press release
detailing Gerry Rees-Mortimer's
unethical business practices.
Check out the headings.
Uh, Misleading Shareholders,
Misappropriation of Assets,
Harassment and Blackmail.
Like father, like daughter.
She was prepared
to take him down if needs be.
Which gives him a whole new motive.
Mm-hm.
A couple of things.
You were right about Gerry
staying here a lot. Mm-hm?
Dent checked the bookings,
and last summer, Gerry
was pretty much here all the time.
More to the point
Leo Braxton's finances
have come back.
They've had a recent boost.
Leo Braxton isn't here, is he?
No.
He said he was gonna go and let off
some steam at the motocross.
And I'm quite tired too,
so if you don't mind.
You didn't come here
to stop Rachel starting a new life
on the other side of the world.
You needed to stop her
publicly ruining your reputation.
She prepared a press release
as insurance
in case you tried
to stop her leaving.
Did you come all this way
to negotiate?
Or was she just another deal to you?
A deal you couldn't afford to lose.
I'd like you to leave.
The day before Rachel and Oz
went missing,
you paid £50,000
into Leo Braxton's account.
Yeah, this place is struggling.
I'm an investor.
I invest in business!
£50,000 is a lot of money.
I'm a generous man.
Me and Leo go back a long way.
I've got more time for him
than the others.
He's made something of himself,
unlike Alex, who wasted his time
becoming some two-bit DJ.
Mr Rees-Mortimer,
what did Leo Braxton have to do
in return for his money?
What he does best.
Look after this place.
Now, if you want to continue
this conversation,
I suggest we go through solicitors.
Then it would be transactional.
Everything you do is transactional.
Works for me.
Parental love should never be that.
And why did you come here
so much last summer?
Well, I didn't.
I've no idea
what you're talking about.
We need to check
those booking dates,
see if they coincide with when
Oz returned to Australia.
Yeah, will do.
Boss?
Why are you so interested
in Rory Summerfield's socials?
No, it's not just his socials
I'm interested in.
It's one of his followers.
It's something Gerry said.
A two-bit DJ.
Right.
I don't think Rory
was ever looking for Rachel and Oz.
I think he was looking for Alex.
What? I didn't know
they knew each other.
No. Rory was at most
of Alex's DJ gigs by the looks.
And I think he was
the "younger friend" in London.
HE SNIFFLES
Uh, Dent, you'll need to send
all of this over in an email.
Every single shotgun licence.
Thanks.
Abbie Summerfield
has a shotgun licence.
Kane Harrison hasn't.
Or rather can't
because he has a criminal record.
The party,
the one the Summerfields had
What about it?
According to the files,
not everyone was there.
Has he got much longer?
No. His time's more than up.
He's giving him a bit extra.
He was pretty cut up
when I mentioned Alex's death.
Guess we all are, you know.
Especially Rory, I imagine.
Rory?
Him and Alex were clearly close.
Helping him with his DJ-ing,
quite the team.
Oh, that. Yeah.
I guess Rory's starting
to spread his wings.
Drink, drugs,
girlfriends, boyfriends
Well, he's just exploring, isn't he?
All just phases.
Must have reminded you
of your mum and dad
all that partying.
Not really.
Alex recently came out
as bisexual
..I'm sure that wasn't a problem
for either of you? No.
Consenting adults and all that.
They can do what they want.
Couldn't agree more.
It must have been tough
when your parents were sent down
and you went into care.
Rory was, what, four?
And he was taken away from you.
All you wanna do is protect them,
keep them safe.
And you got your brother back.
Must have been quite a battle.
Well, it's family, innit?
It's what you do.
What's your point?
My point is,
it's the hardest thing -
how to protect your kids.
Or in Abbie's case, Rory.
Yeah, well,
you'll have to excuse us,
but we need to go
and get him off now.
And we need to speak to Rory.
Rory!
Police need a word!
Your time's up, Leo!
What the hell's he doing?
Rory, no!
Nice, Chet.
You're going nowhere, mate. Come on.
Get off!
Whoa, wait!
Rory, what the hell are you doing?!
What do you think?!
Trying to get away from you two!
Because you killed Alex!
I know you did! You killed him!
That's a serious accusation, Rory.
It's true, and they know it.
He's confused. It's fine.
It's not, though, is it?
Is it?!
You killed Alex, didn't you?!
No. Rory, of course we didn't.
This is all my fault.
I'm the reason he's dead,
they're all dead.
Do we have to do this right now?
Yes, Mr Harrison,
we have to do this right now.
None of this is your fault.
You've done nothing wrong.
I knew Alex.
I liked him.
We know. And there's nothing
to be ashamed of.
No, love, there isn't. It's fine.
We were just looking out for you!
Like you've always done.
Kane did it.
Kane went out to go confront Alex.
I saw him go.
I know he did.
He left and took the gun.
You've got it wrong, mate.
It wasn't like that, right.
Kane, we, thought that
you were involved with Alex,
and Kane was uncomfortable
with that.
Rory, there is an age gap
between you and Alex!
All right?
And you know this is hard for him.
It's hard for him, generally.
Because of the abuse you suffered.
So you went and confronted Alex.
It was your gear that got snagged.
Yeah, well, nothing happened.
Abbie stopped me.
Alex, he explained
that you were just friends
and that he wanted to support you in
a way that he hadn't been supported.
And Alex didn't want you
to have to go through anything
that he'd been through.
I messed up.
I'm so sorry, Rory.
But I swear to you, mate,
I didn't kill anyone.
And you believed Alex?
Yeah.
Yeah, I believed him cos he was
telling the truth about everything.
There's no way he was lying.
About everything?
Leo?
The 50,000,
what did you have to do for it?
Nothing, it was a gift.
An investment.
Can I go now?
Did Gerry Rees-Mortimer come
and stay with you last summer? No.
No, course not.
Dent, it's Harper
Alex, he wanted to come clean
about the past.
He had this, like, memory box
of pictures.
He wanted to reminisce.
The whole thing was like
a confession, basically.
That he was the anonymous tip-off.
The person who wasn't at the party,
the one who reported your parents
to the police.
He'd lived for years feeling guilt
about the impact that had.
How everything ended.
Rachel's return was his chance
to come clean.
Sorry, um, I don't understand.
Why would Alex grass your parents?
Because he was jealous.
Rachel had ended things with Alex
and had started seeing Leo.
And Alex couldn't cope if he wasn't
with Rachel, so that was it.
Gerry didn't want Rachel to have
anything else to do with us,
so he just brought
the whole thing crashing down.
Because the bust affected
not just you and your parents,
it broke up the band.
And Rachel and Leo.
So Leo wasn't at the camper
the other night
when they all met up.
He blew them out,
so he didn't hear Alex's confession.
His list of calls from Rachel,
there was one the next day.
Forty-six minutes. She told him.
Uh, there's something else.
Dent got it wrong.
So, it wasn't Gerry Rees-Mortimer
staying at The Boar and Brisket
all last summer.
It was a different Rees-Mortimer.
Rachel?
On a break from Oz. She came back.
To do what?
Rekindle her relationship with Leo?
Could be.
PHONE RINGS
Soraya?
Got it.
The sulphur compound
on the ripped pictures -
dithiapentane.
Truffle oil to you and me.
Leo.
HARPER: Leo?
Come.
ELLIS: Don't!
Why not?
Just come away from the edge, Leo.
This is all his fault all of it.
Rachel told you
about Alex's confession.
Yeah.
Yeah.
She thought I should know.
That I was never good enough
for Rachel
..but she is the one thing
that I ever wanted.
And I got her.
I won her love.
Only Alex Alex ended it.
The night of the raid,
he called the police.
I thought it was my fault.
It was something I'd done or
or hadn't done.
Only last summer, she came back.
She just walked in one day
like nothing had changed.
Another summer together.
Another summer that ended.
Rachel and Oz had split up.
You know, they they didn't think
they could they could hack it
at opposite ends of the world.
So we gave us a go.
I wasn't her forever person.
She went back to him.
Heartbreak again.
And again and again
All because of Alex.
He took my life away from me.
So you wanted to take revenge?
I don't know what I wanted.
I just knew I had to confront him.
So you went to his cottage
'He ran away.
'He was going to go and see
Rachel and Oz anyway
'for their last night here.'
I followed him.
You rang Rachel on the way.
PHONE RINGING
She didn't pick up.
So you tracked him down.
Did you mean to hurt him?
No.
'There was a trap on the ground.
'Alex went to go grab it.
It was self-defence.'
ALEX SCREAMS IN PAIN
'The trap just went off.'
Rachel and Oz,
they heard the screams.
PHONE RINGING,
SHE YELPS
HE CHUCKLES
DISTANT SCREAMING
They came running.
'Oz and I fought'
And Alex, he
grabbed Rachel's phone
and his hand
..and he ran away.
'I didn't mean
for any of this to happen.
'I didn't.'
It just got so crazy.
Oz coming at me.
Rachel screaming at me.
Leo, please! Leo!
I lost it.
GUNSHO
Rachel tried to save Oz.
I tried to stop her, but I couldn't.
The love of my life
..dived in there
to save the love of hers.
HE SOBS
Here you go.
Nice one.
Mate, I'm sorry, I got it wrong
about the bookings
at The Boar And Brisket.
Archie, it's not a problem.
Mistakes happen.
I came to thank you.
No need.
Well, far be it from me
to tell anyone what to do,
but I took gardening leave once.
It wasn't
all it was cracked up to be.
Dent and the team,
they just need a steer.
Keep on keeping on?
Mm-hm.
So
I think the time has finally come.
But maybe I could snag a lift
to the station?
And you could just drop me?
Or yeah, I can
I can just walk.
For a drink.
For you.
Maybe I'll just have a tea.
What, a tea?!
Mm.
I'll see what, uh,
real ales they've got.
PHONE CHIMES
Just leave it.
Probably just Leighton telling us
how marvellous we are again.
You reckon?
I do.
I am actually dying of thirst.
PHONE CHIMES

Is everything all right?
Yeah. It is now.
Good. For a moment there,
I thought we were in trouble.
Ah. Thanks.
We are celebrating.
And, um,
what are we celebrating exactly?
Time will tell.
Careful.
That was strong.
Cheers, Chet.
Cheers, Ellis.
Mm. Whoa.

HE CLEARS THROA
Hello. Long time, no see.
Mm-hm.
HE EXHALES
Sorry about that.
Bus was late.
It's all right. You're here now.
You want me to..?
Please. OK.
Right.
Yeah, I needed it.
I've just started studying a course.
Long-distance learning.
Psychology.
Mm-hm.
Quite the frenzy in the press.
And social media.
Every Tom, Dick and Harriet
tramping all over the place,
playing at being amateur sleuths.
Murder-suicide. He pushed her in,
or maybe she pushed him in.
Right now,
it's a missing persons enquiry.
Nothing to indicate
a crime has been committed.
Papers are saying
that the force at Brindleton
aren't quite up to the case.
Mm-hm.
London's here.
And five
..four three two.
Let's see how unwelcome
they make us feel this time.
And one.
DCI Ellis and DS Harper.
Mm.
DCI Cotton, and this is DI Dent.
Archie. So glad you're here.
Good to meet you both.
So, you've got victim recovery dogs
and divers
searching a three-mile area
from here to Ashervale? Correct.
We're using side-scan sonar,
underwater cameras
and ground-penetrating radar.
It's not enough. Make it five miles.
Go as far as Durston.
Above-average rainfall
for the time of year,
and the river is running
faster than ever, yeah?
Er, some walkers
reported them missing?
Yeah, they came across the camper
and thought it was a bit odd
that it was left the way it was.
And any sightings of the couple?
Several reports
of Oz and Rachel out walking.
A couple of them remembered
Rachel's distinctive yellow jacket,
and one saw them near the river.
There's a danger spot
where people go.
We checked it out
and found drops of blood.
None of it makes sense.
Tell me about the phone
you also found.
Right, yeah.
Well, erm,
we found Oz Hoffman's phone
the day after
they were reported missing.
And then yesterday,
Rachel Hoffman's was located here.
But you must have searched here
as they were reported missing.
We didn't find the phone
to begin with,
so we moved the search elsewhere.
Er Actually, it was me.
I moved the search elsewhere.
And then a local kid,
Rory Summerfield,
came back after we'd gone,
and he found it.
That's why we're back now,
double-checking
in case we missed anything else.
And Rachel's phone had blood on it?
Yes.
Clearly, someone had tried
to unlock it but got blocked.
And Tech are on to it now.
We also found a strip of ripped
material on a branch over there.
We've sent it to Forensics.
Why come here?
Pretty modest for a honeymoon. Mm.
Maybe they wanted it that way.
Still, all a bit strange, though.
There's a good boy. Come on.

What? Is this some kind of test?
You tell me.
You're the psychologist these days.
Right, well
Nothing's out of place.
Nothing disturbed.
No sign of intrusion.
They left the camper door open,
so they clearly weren't planning
on leaving or must've felt safe.
Ah. Three wine glasses.
They were expecting someone.
Who never came.
OFFICER: Ma'am!
DI DENT: Is it a body?
Part of one.
What's the tattoo?
Hand severed at the wrist.
Not a clean cut, by the look of it.
Tattoo's of a two-headed dog, maybe?
Hand looks male.
Could be Oz Hoffman. No.
PHONE RINGS
The wedding photos
What've we got?
No tattoos on his right hand.
And Oz Hoffman's father is Maori.
He has a ta moko,
the traditional tattoo markings,
shoulder to wrists.
The hand belongs to someone else.
So we're now looking for
three missing persons,
one of whom has a missing hand.
What the hell happened here?
Get this area cordoned off.
Get CSI down here.
We need everybody
to back up the way they came.
They've found a body
at Radley Basin.
Four miles downriver,
beyond your search parameter.
It wasn't found by a police diver.
No.
It was a member of the public.
This is getting out of control.
You should be up there
doing something.
I know it's her.
It's obvious it's her.
OFFICER: We need confirmation
In the water
..it's Rachel. I know it is!
CAMERA CLICKS
She's wearing the yellow waterproof!
MUFFLED: Can you describe
how you found the body?
I didn't. Cooper did.
We were walking along the river,
and he must have seen something
in the water.
He ran over and started barking.
There was no way I could
get to the body, so I rang you guys.
And do you live locally?
No.
Norfolk. I saw the news
and followed the story on socials.
Rachel and Oz seemed so lovely.
They had their whole lives
in front of them.
I mean, you have to do something,
don't you?
Do you? With all due respect,
and grateful though we are for your
discovery, it's police business.
Of course, but you did also
put out an appeal asking the public
for information, didn't you?
Look, all I'm trying to do here
is help.
You said your dog
discovered the body
so he wasn't on a lead.
Sorry, I didn't see the signs.
Path is here.
The body there, behind that bush.
I was chucking a ball for him.
No ball now.
SHE SCOFFS
Must have floated away.
We'll need a statement.
Of course.
Right, yeah.
If you could follow me,
we'll take your name and address
We'll get the divers
to continue looking downstream.
Try Oxbow Riffle
between here and Ashervale first.
Shallow, rocky and a horseshoe bend
in the river.
I'm surprised one body made it
past there. I doubt two would.
Will do.

Citizen journalism, they call it.
You got here fast.
Just following socials.
It's a body, right? Rachel Hoffman?
I gather you found a phone?
Yeah, and?
Is it one of them or not?
Not for me to say.

You have to stop, please, sir.
OFFICER 2:
Sir, you can't park there!
I need you to stop right here.
OK, OK. Who's in charge here?
Sir
Get off me.
I don't I don't need any of this!
Move back.
I just want to know
what's happening.
DCI COTTON: Mr Rees-Mortimer,
I'm sorry, you can't go any further.
Is it true?
AUDIO SHARPENS
Have you found Rach?
Hey! Stop that!
You get these vultures
away from here.
I want to see my daughter!
Mr Rees-Mortimer.
I'm sorry to confirm
the body of a woman has been found.
Look, I understand
how distressing this is for you
..but first and foremost,
we need to secure the scene.
I'm so sorry
we couldn't let you hold her
..but you will be able to later.
Will I be able
to get her belongings?
If they're not required
as part of the investigation.
About your son-in-law
He's no son-in-law of mine.
He killed Rachel.
You know that, right?
And that bastard's still out there.
Can I ask Mr Rees-Mortimer
..why why would Oz Hoffman
kill your daughter
three days into their marriage?
Because it wasn't right.
He knew it. She knew it.
And I definitely knew it.
Like I said on the news,
Oz is trouble.
He's a waste-of-space chancer.
How did Rachel and Oz meet?
He was over here on work,
and they started dating.
They split last summer,
and he went back to Australia.
I thought I'd seen the back
of him but he came back for her.
Presumably because he was in love?
He conned her.
He wasn't good enough for her.
Rachel was a star.
She lit up any room! You ask any
And you check him out cos I'm
telling you, there's dirt on him.
He was just after her money -
my money, my bloody money!
And what brought Rachel and Oz here?
Memories.
We came here every summer
when Rachel was in her teens.
Before her mum passed
..it was our happy place
..our golden time.
Yeah, and she loved it here.
Like a second home to her.
I suppose she knew people here?
Yeah, a few of the local youths.
We'll need a list of names.
I've got to go with my daughter.
Boss? Hmm?
Rachel's father has a point.
Oz has got form.
He left Australia
under something of a cloud,
some kind of financial impropriety -
fraud.
Look, it's too complicated for me,
but
Marriages may not be made in heaven,
but
even the bad ones
tend to make it past three days. OK.
But Oz is still a suspect, right?
In on it with the one-handed man?
Possibly.
So, what brought Rachel back?
Right, why start a new life
with your new husband
right back where you were
as a teenager
when you could go
anywhere in the world?
Maybe it's the place
she felt happiest.
Maybe she wanted to reconnect
with her past.
So, where to next?
The Swelt where it all began.
What's wrong with all these people?
I mean,
what's missing from their lives
that possible death fills a hole?
Says the murder detective.
Yeah, but it's our job, isn't it?
I mean, we get paid to do it.
OK, that is two pulled pork.
There you go, mate.
Ta, mate.
Two more coming up.
There you go, my love.
Enjoy.
Smells good.
Very smoky.
Very opportunistic.
We've got anything you want
Every cloud, I guess.
..ladies and gents.
Yes?
You're very enterprising.
Well, people still need to eat,
even in the middle of a tragedy.
You're local?
Yeah, born and bred.
Maybe you knew Rachel
from when she visited in her teens.
I did, yeah.
How's the search going?
Progressing.
So, had you seen her recently?
No. No, not for ages.
Can I get you guys anything?
Don't let me stop you.
So, er, this is
the offending stretch of water.
Mm.
With picnic tables.
A beauty spot and a death trap.
Double whammy.
Mm-hm.
So, no-one who's ever fallen in
has survived.
Yeah, The Swelt has 100% death rate.
That's why they call it The Swelt.
From the Old English - "to die".
Or more accurately,
"to cause to die".
I, er I just looked it up.
This is where they found Oz's phone.
Yeah, phone was dead.
Mm-hm. But maybe he'd taken it out
and placed it there.
Tech accessed it.
The last two photos were selfies
taken at 16:42 three days ago.
No hint that anything was wrong.
And then there's the blood.
PHONE RINGS
Hello?
Boss?
You're not gonna believe this.
Found Oz Hoffman's body.
It's badly beaten
and with a shotgun wound.
And you'll never guess where.
Oxbow Riffle.
DCI COTTON: OK, so, assuming this
case doesn't get any more bizarre,
unless Rachel Hoffman
killed her husband,
there's a killer still out there,
which is the assumption
Joe Public are making
and getting more hysterical
by the second.
Archie?
So
Erm, shotgun blast to the chest.
Not clear yet
whether bruising to the face
is from a beating
or being thrown round underwater.
Oh, yeah, and both hands intact.
And the severed hand?
Path are examining,
and we're checking
with local tattooists,
you know, to see if anyone
recognises the image.
What is it, anyway?
Some sort of dog or fox?
It's actually a twin-headed jackal,
possibly representing
the god of change and time.
He could see into the past with one
face and the future with the other.
We do have some new information.
Separate to the fabric
we found earlier near the camper,
divers checked the river
near where the body was found
and came across this.
A white wedding garter
with Rachel Hoffman's DNA on it.
Sorry, who?
Who wears a wedding garter
three days into their wedding?
She wasn't wearing it.
It was found caught on a branch
50 metres down river.
Right.
Printer fob.
Oh! Erm
So, erm, we have a list
of firearm certificates
for everyone in the area
with a shotgun.
Most farmers have one,
so it's quite a list.
And we're checking CCTV
for vehicles coming into
and out of the area
since the Hoffmans disappeared.
Also check details
for cars coming into the village
from the days before
Rachel and Oz went missing.
Before?
Suspect doesn't have to be local.
If outsiders are involved,
logically, they were here
before the disappearance.
Recent events
don't always unlock the answers.
Sometimes,
you need to dig a little deeper.
Rachel Hoffman used to be in the
local band here - The Cold Turkeys.
They were together
for quite a while.
Toured the country. They were close.
That's an article from
the local newspaper 15 years ago.
Gerry Rees-Mortimer and his family
used to visit every summer
when Rachel was a teen.
Look, the point is,
she had lots of friends here.
You didn't know?
Before my time.
And what with all the chaos,
we just hadn't got round
to looking into her past.
Let's start now.
There's a list of names
of the band members
also on the list
Rachel's father gave us,
including the local chef guy.
Yeah.
That's Alex Scanlan, local DJ.
Yeah, the band leader.
And Abbie Summerfield.
Summerfield.
Like Rory Summerfield,
phone and drone kid.
Abbie's his big sister.
More like a mother, really.
Both spent time in care
but came good.
She hooked up with
former young offender Kane Harrison,
and they run a thriving motocross
business on the edge of town.
Get me everything you can
on all of them.
The band, what they got up to,
schools, teachers, fans -
send me anything and everything
you get.
Will do. Absolutely.
Good.
Let's get to it.
Boss.
Lydia Green,
the woman who found Rachel's body,
there is no sign of her in Norfolk.
Right.
Nice to meet you, I'm DS Harper.
There's a file here
Sorry we weren't up to speed
on the band.
No need to apologise.
You know,
one blip doesn't define your career.
DCI COTTON SIGHS
Doesn't it?
It's quite a blip.
I've known worse. Had worse.
Chalk it up, call it experience,
and
..keep on keeping on.
Do you want me to face the press
or you?
Oh, I wouldn't deny you
that pleasure.
Why, thank you (!)
Talk to me about phone coverage.
Oh, it's fine here
but a bit patchy out and about.
Is that a problem?
Probably not.
I just need to stay in contact
with the outside world, that's all.
In case someone
wants to get in contact.
You can always
give them our number here.
Thank you.
And I'll need to speak
to your pathologist.
I'll get Archie to take you.
By the way, it's Val.
Val Cotton.
It's been a nightmare.
Normally, we just have to deal
with traffic jams,
low-level crime
and stolen farm machinery.
Nothing like this.
How long have you been here?
Two years.
Transferred from Warrington.
I wanted to be a footballer,
but then everyone does, really
I don't know,
that's what I'm saying.
I can't remember why I came here.
It's just through here.
Nice one.
BEEP
Thanks.
Cheers.
PHONE RINGS
Dent.
Harper!
Sorry.
Hi, heard you were coming.
Sorry for the mess. A bit busy.
Sure. We'd, er,
love to know about the severed hand.
And the gunshot wound
that killed Oz Hoffman.
Starting with the hand,
the size, shape and hair on the
fingers indicates a male right hand.
Tattoo is fresh, done on the days
before the hand was removed.
And the wound?
Hard to be sure,
but from the decomp,
I'd say three days max.
That combined with examination
of the wound margins
indicates teeth.
Teeth? Erm, so,
the the hand was bitten off?
Er, no. The serrated teeth
of an animal trap.
Severed and lacerated ligaments
indicate some struggle,
as if the hand were ripped off
completely by the victim
trying to escape.
SORAYA GRUNTS
Hello.
Baba's awake. Just started kicking.
Enjoy.
As for the gunshot wound,
confirmed shotgun
point-blank to the chest. Right.
At the water's edge?
I reckon.
Some water in the lungs, so he was
still alive when he went in.
Ooh! Hello, there's another one.
That was CSI.
There were previously unidentified
prints in the camper van
that didn't belong
to either honeymooner.
Previously?
Not any more.
They match prints taken
from the woman who found Rachel.
Lydia Green? What are her prints
doing in the camper van?
OFFICER: Protocol that there's
no phones allowed in this area.
Just take a seat.
Thanks for coming in.
No problem.
Although, I'm not sure
why I'm here, if I'm honest.
DS HARPER: Well, you're here
for a couple of reasons.
One, there is no record
of you living in Norfolk.
Sorry.
Sorry. I gave the officer
my details as they are now.
But everything on record's probably
under my married name, Ford.
I only switched back recently
when my divorce came through.
We'll check.
You didn't know the Hoffmans,
I take it?
Course not.
Never heard of them
before they went missing.
And when did you come over
from Norfolk? Yesterday.
Why?
Did you visit their camper van?
Why are you asking?
Oh, I might have gone by, yeah.
But I'm not the only one,
have you seen it out there?
Well, yours are the only prints
and DNA all over the van.
I don't believe you found
Rachel's body by accident.
I told you what happened.
My dog, Cooper, found her.
Hmm.
SCOFFS
I don't know what you expect me
to say.
Truth would be good for a start.
CHAIR SCRAPES
Cooper is a spaniel.
Spaniels have a good sense of smell.
THAT'S how your dog
found Rachel's body.
He knew Rachel's scent.
You went to the camper van and stole
something to pick up the trail.
Say a white wedding garter.
You knew the police had
had dogs out.
Social media tells you they're
focusing on a three-mile radius,
So YOU start searching outside that.
Only you don't want to get caught
with something of Rachel's on you,
so you throw it in the river,
hoping to get rid of it.
You need to work WITH us, Lydia.
OK.
OK.
I'm trying to become
a true crime podcaster.
So, when I heard
about the camper van,
I thought it would make sense
to go up there last night.
It's a taped-off crime scene
with officers guarding it.
Which part of that
do you not understand?
There was no-one there.
They'd all gone.
Look, I was just trying to help.
Yeah, help yourself go viral
on "the gram", hmm?
So?
It takes time and effort, you know.
Two people are dead, Lydia.
They are dead, and you're trying
to get famous through them?
Don't judge!
It's not like you lot are exactly
showering yourselves in glory.
You wanna know who did it?
We're not interested in speculation.
The father. Gerry Rees-Mortimer.
He's a bloody fat-cat capitalist
of the highest order.
I doubt that would stand up in court
as proof of murder.
You need to go back home
to Norfolk today.
Or we will charge you with
perverting the course of justice
by tampering with evidence!
Your choice.
I, er, left Lydia Green
to be processed, slowly. Good.
And I'll go over her socials,
track under her married name.
Rachel Hoffman's financials.
She was closing her bank account.
Well, maybe she planned
to get a new one
or a joint one with her husband.
Fresh start.
Er Well, as soon
as she finished honeymooning
in teen nostalgia land, right?
Right.
Oh, I got a text, by the way,
off the owner
of the cottage we're renting.
Check-in's any time we like.
Let's get over there.
Right, I'll, erm,
I'll get some supplies.
Any requests?
No
BUSY TONE
VOICEMAIL: 'You have reached'
GRACE: 'Grace.'
'Please leave your message
after the tone.'
BEEP
Grace. Hi. Me.
I'm away on work for a bit.
The signal isn't great,
but I'll do my best.
Here if you need.
PHONE RINGS
'How was day one?'
Welcoming. Makes a change.
CHUCKLES
We must be slipping.
That said, two bodies
is quite an escalation.
Media coverage just went through
the roof.
I'll know to avoid it, then.
'The local force weren't coping
when it was a missing persons.
'You're gonna have to see them
through this.'
They'll cope.
'Any insights so far?'
DOOR OPENS, CLOSES
Working on it.
'What was that?
Everything all right?'
Harper with shopping.
Best go.
'OK. Keep me in the loop.' Mm.
Well, you clearly don't think we're
gonna solve this case any time soon.
Yeah, I erred on the side
of getting everything.
Maybe leave the unpacking.
We're going to The Boar And Brisket.
In the days since her wedding,
Rachel Hoffman contacted
all her former band members.
Alex Scanlan, Abbie Summerfield
and our chef friend, Leo Braxton.
Let's start with Mr Smoky.
Who said he hadn't seen her in ages.
Maybe he hadn't.
But she rang him twice -
once the day she arrived,
once the following afternoon.
And he rang her back.
Come on, Harper.
Yeah, coming.
According to the bio
on this place's website,
hotshot chef Leo Braxton
left the area in his early 20s,
went to London
and worked his way up to head chef
at a swanky West End restaurant.
And yet he came back.
Hm.
Let's find out why.
Let's see how Dent's getting on
with cars in and out of the area.
Get him to check that one.
PHONE BEEPS
It's Gerry Rees-Mortimer's.
Archie it's Chet.
Dent's checking the cars.
Said he'll get back to us.
Ooh.
WHISTLES
"Orange wine".
What is orange wine
when it's at home, eh?
Talking of being at home.
Hey. Can I get you a table?
We're fine, thanks.
Need to ask a few questions.
Sure. Yeah. Fire away.
Old friends, I see?
Yeah. Erm, we have rooms here,
and Gerry's staying.
We've known each other a long time.
So, I was just commiserating
with him about Rachel.
You said you didn't see her.
That's right.
But she rang you twice.
Yeah.
She She wanted to organise
a reunion of sorts.
Wanted us to meet Oz.
I-I didn't go.
Because?
Because I'm busy, for one.
And all this stuff, it was
it was a long time ago, you know.
Just let the past be the past
and all that.
The Cold Turkeys.
You performed at local venues and
festivals around the country. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, that's right.
But, erm you know
it was no big deal.
You know, being in a band,
it's just one of those things you do
when you're young, innit?
Yeah, so, er,
this is your rock and roll now?
That's right.
Hm.
Look, to be honest,
I find all that band stuff a
little bit cringeworthy now, anyway.
You know,
I was just a crappy bassist.
It was, erm
It was Alex and Rachel,
they were the real talent.
Yeah, he wrote all the songs, and
she sang them.
You did ring her back, though.
Yeah. Yeah, but just to apologise,
you know,
for not being able to make it.
But it just went straight
to voicemail.
PHONE CHIMES
Oh, sorry.
Er, look, I should really
be getting on, excuse me.
Boss?
Boss?
Dent sent this,
with a message to check the date
that Gerry's car arrived.
Four days ago.
Yeah, he was here
before his daughter went missing.
Mr Rees-Mortimer?
We'd like a word.
We found Oz.
GERRY: Yeah, I heard.
Shot in the chest.
Point-blank range.
You have a shotgun licence.
Now, you can't really think that I
killed my daughter and her husband?
Well, given that you came
to the village
the day before
Rachel and Oz disappeared
and that you're very open
about not liking your son-in-law.
If I killed him, would I really
slag him off in public?
You might if you wanted people
to think he killed your daughter.
It's not exactly your, er,
typical father-of-the-bride
behaviour, is it?
To follow the happy couple
on their honeymoon.
So, why come?
To be around in the hope
that Rachel saw sense.
And did they know you were here?
Did you see her? Make her see sense?
No.
But I might have done
if I'd had the chance.
Those summers you spent here
We'd rent a place for a month,
and Rachel would either
stay on longer
or she'd come back
and stay with friends. Boy friends?
Come on. Teenagers, bands.
Three summers between the age
of 15 and 18.
Time alone, parent-free.
Yeah, sure.
But when Jane passed,
the band and the summers ended
and she never went back.
She went to uni,
she went on to London.
Life moves on.
Rachel was closing
her bank accounts
..to start a new life in Australia.
What, you're asking me?
I had no idea of their plans
beyond them coming back here.
It doesn't really matter much now,
does it?
Do you believe him?
I believe he cared for his daughter,
but he's a man who likes
to get his own way.
Yeah, you don't get to be
as successful as he is
without a ruthless streak.
So, what are we thinking?
Like father, like daughter?
Well, find out what Rachel did
when she worked for him.
And check the bookings history
here
how he got so tight
with Leo Braxton.
Maybe he's stayed here before.
So, where to next?
We need to speak to the other band
members, see what they have to say.
Alex Scanlan's place,
Saddle Park Lane? Let's do it.
Oh, great (!)
Lydia hit the 10,000 mark.
She's thanking her followers.
Gloves.
Yeah.
Hello?
Mr Scanlan?
It's the police.
Boss, in here.
Call Cotton.
And Forensics.
We've got a motive for Alex Scanlon.
Yeah, got it.
So, erm, the, er, break-in
at Scanlan's cottage,
there's nothing much so far.
One thing we have learnt -
the fingerprints
that were all over the place,
floor-to-ceiling,
every nook and cranny
DS HARPER:
In other words, his prints.
..match the ones that are found in
the blood on Rachel Hoffman's phone.
So Alex Scanlan was in the woods
with Rachel's phone.
Which means he might be our amputee.
And makes him our prime suspect.
Or another victim.
On the day of the wedding,
he caught a train to London.
Check his bank details,
see if we can piece together
what he did there.
Well, hang on.
If If he's another victim,
then that means
there's a fourth person involved?
Correct.
Tell me more about Abbie, Rory
and Kane.
Abbie and Rory's parents
were addicts
who ran their own marijuana farm on
what is now the motocross circuit.
Got busted, and both are dead now.
That's why the kids were taken
into care.
Kane was a young offender.
Tell me about him.
Another tough start.
Sexually abused by his father,
turned to drugs,
but he cleaned up his act
when he met Abbie.
Hm, Kane's fine as long
as no-one makes a move on Abbie,
then he gets possessive.
There've been a few scuffles.
Send me everything you have.
On it.
Forensics confirm that the material
strip found near the camper
is often used in motocross gear.
OK.
I can do that, you know.
Oh? I look forward to seeing that.
I was a Formby Beach
Under-11s Junior Champion.
Well, second, actually.
Or seventh. But I got robbed. Mm-hm.
The wind was off the scale that day.
Worse for you than everyone else.
Yeah, it came out of nowhere,
like a tornado.
We're looking for ripped gear.
Already on it.
Who wants to go first?
Er, thanks, but we
We've just had breakfast.
Erm, we're actually
we're here working.
If it's about the drones,
we've told Rory a thousand times.
It's not.
I've checked your posts.
Could do with you on my team.
Rachel and Oz both confirmed dead,
yeah?
Did you know the victims?
Well, you know I did,
otherwise you wouldn't be here.
Me and Rach were mates
back in the day.
We were in a band. We had a laugh,
but I don't think we would have
changed the course of music history.
Or maybe we would.
Had you seen her recently?
Er, yeah, the night before she went
missing, a bunch of us got together.
The Cold Turkeys.
Well, actually, it was just me
and Alex. Leo didn't wanna go.
Rach wanted us to meet Oz,
so we went to the camper.
And what was Oz like?
Yeah. Nice enough.
I know a keeper when I see one.
I'm not sure he wanted to spend
his honeymoon with us, but
And do you see much
of the other band members?
Leo? Do me a favour.
I can't be doing
with all that posh nosh bollocks.
He likes his motocross.
But it doesn't mean I eat
his overpriced food.
I still see Alex, though.
He's still strumming away.
He's all right,
but we've just got a lot
of other things to think about.
Rory clearly hasn't.
There's only one thing on his mind.
Well
there are worse things he could be
obsessing over on that phone.
According to the Land Registry
you own this place. Is that right?
Yeah, we inherited it
off Mum and Dad.
Why, you got a problem with that?
No. No.
Rachel's father said Rachel was
special, would light up any room.
Gerry?
Course he did, the posh, old goat.
Listen, Rachel knew
exactly how to work a room
and be the centre of attention.
No, Rach was monied stunning,
talented, funny.
She had the boys all over her,
which is actually my idea of hell,
present company excepted.
Any boy in particular?
Er, Alex, mainly.
Him and Rach were an item
for three years, I think.
SPRAY CAN RATTLES
Did, er, you go to the camper van?
Me? No.
Not my scene.
Right, the thing is,
we found a strip of material
on a tree near the van.
No?
Any idea how you got that rip
in your jacket?
Uh, that's probably me.
I wear that as well.
It's a bit big for you, isn't it?
Well, not with all
my clothes underneath it, no.
And I knew I was sitting out,
so I layered up.
Must have snagged it.
But the tree
was some way from the camper van.
Why would you snag it there?
Mm, nature called.
HE MOUTHS
Don't get settled.
No, I'm I'm-I'm not.
The school they went to,
Alex won all the music prizes
and was taught by this man.
Name's Foster Lang,
music teacher and band manager.
Presumably he's retired by now?
Retired from teaching early,
don't know why.
He's also the man we saw
in reception yesterday,
the one looking lost and confused.
He has a cottage out on the moors.
Right,
so if Alex Scanlan is our amputee
and he hasn't gone to hospital
And he hasn't gone home.
But he might have gone
to see his old mentor.
Who could be protecting him
or keeping him captive. Mm.
PHONE CHIMES
Oh, great.
We're not the only ones onto Foster.
'You know Gerry, yeah?
'You know Rees-Mortimer'
'Go away!'
'How much did he pay ya?'
'Go away!'
Lydia Green is clearly still here.
'Tell me what he paid you to do.'
'What you talking about?'
That woman.
Yeah, that woman.
There's our man.
Mr Lang?
You're probably aware of everything
that's been happening
around here recently?
A former pupil of yours is missing.
Alex Scanlan.
Alex?
Mm-hm.
We wondered if you'd seen him?
Is he OK?
That's what
we're trying to find out.
Who are you?
What're you doing here?
Call for back-up.
Yeah.
Something happened in there.
He was very drunk.
Alex was drunk?
It weren't my fault.
What happened, Mr Lang?
Alex came on to me.
Do you want to stay here and
I'll go in?
I'll go.
Boss?
Don't go in.
Don't go in, don't
RECORD PLAYER PLAYS
DARK CLASSICAL MUSIC
MUSIC STOPS
FLOORBOARD CREAKS
God.
No. Mr Lang, you have to stay here.
There's no-one in there,
but there has been. Right.
And they've bled. A lot.
Blood's dry now.
Dent's on his way. OK.
Mr Lang
It wasn't my fault.
What wasn't your fault, Mr Lang?
Alex was bleeding.
Do you know why?
He must have been in pain.
He must have been scared.
He was screaming. Blood everywhere.
He was here, then he went.
Where?
Is it home or or hospital?
Hospital.
Mr Lang,
if I need to go to hospital,
point me in the direction.
If you go past The Claw
..there's an old graveyard.
Thank you.
Right.
Take him in,
and get all available officers
searching the surrounding area.
And get Forensics
onto the animal trap. Got it.
I'll check the map, find The Claw.
No need. I know where it is.
Right.
Whoa.
Boss?
Mm-hm?
Sorry.
I spoke to Alex Scanlan's tattooist.
He remembers discussing
the double-headed jackal
with the two of them.
Uh, Alex meant it as a symbol
of his bisexuality.
He told the tattooist
that after years of uncertainty,
he was finally coming out.
Do you think that's what
Foster was talking about? Maybe.
You said he discussed it
with the two of them.
Yeah, the tattooist said
Alex wasn't on his own.
Said he had a younger friend
with him. OK.
Hello again, Mr Lang.
I'd like to talk about Alex,
if that's OK?
I'd like to tell you
what I think happened.
Alex was injured in the woods
by the river.
We think his hand was severed
by an animal trap.
He didn't have his phone,
so he went to the home
of the nearest person he knew
..you.
I heard him call.
He kept looking behind,
he was scared.
You let him into the house.
He was bleeding a lot.
He was crying in pain.
I tried to find something
to stop the blood, he collapsed.
He left.
I told him to go. I said
I understand.
Alex recently came out as bisexual.
You mentioned Alex.
You said something about him
making a move on you.
It was at school.
It was nothing, really.
Another teacher saw.
The school mishandled it, and I
resigned in protest
at the way they treated him.
That must have had
a devastating effect on Alex.
It drove him into his shell.
He was sensitive.
He had none of Leo's confidence,
fire and musical talents.
Leo was just the bassist.
And the songwriter.
He wrote songs, too?
Yeah, yeah.
They'd hang out at The Swelt.
Wild. Abbie was the wildest.
Her parents
..she didn't have their support.
Stoned. Drunk, day and night.
And that poor kid,
no more than a baby.
Rory.
I never saw him in clothes,
always naked.
Running around hungry
..his sister trying
to look after him.
It must have been so hard on her.
Who?
Hey.
Foster Lang has problems
with memory, not truth.
Now, Rory Summerfield hasn't posted
since we found Alex Scanlan's body.
So? Well, he must know about it
cos news leaked out,
and it's all over
Lydia Green's account.
Previously, he commented
or liked every post of hers.
Now he's gone quiet.
Or maybe he thinks we've caught
our killer. Case closed.
Which it isn't.
There is no way
we are going to do that!
Is that clear?!
OFFICERS: Yes, Boss.
Sorry. We're just discussing
our media strategy.
The press know about
Alex Scanlan's body
courtesy of our citizen journalists.
They've announced Alex
is the killer,
and they want formal confirmation.
And your team is keen to give it.
The ones that are convinced
it's him.
The logic being?
Well
we think Alex was jealous
of Oz Hoffman
because he stole his girl.
So he takes his revenge,
gets injured in the process,
and bleeds out.
Which, in fairness, could be right.
Exactly.
And we know he met Oz
the other night,
maybe that backfired.
The thing is
Alex and Rachel were first loves,
weren't they?
I mean, they went out together
for three years.
Fifteen years ago.
Yeah, but mobile phone records show
that Rachel and Alex Scanlan
had been ringing each other loads.
Maybe they were fighting?
Or catching up on old times?
Well, there's also
the ripped up photos in his house.
We don't know who ripped them
or who's behind the break-in.
People tend not to break
into their own houses.
I know we're under pressure
to get a result,
no-one knows that more than me.
But we can't confirm
what we don't know for sure.
Testing theories is fine,
useful even
but we don't go public
until we're sure.
Keep working the case.
And not everyone thinks
Alex Scanlan is responsible.
Lydia Green is now
pointing the finger at Foster Lang.
Please tell me where we're at
with that woman.
We contacted every hotel and B&B
in the area -
she's not booked in anywhere.
But we also checked CCTV
from the station car park.
That's her registration.
Nice one, Dent. That's good work.
KNOCK ON DOOR
Alex Scanlan was coming out as bi.
That an issue around here?
We're not the most progressive part
of the country,
but we're not dinosaurs either.
The team are just a bit stretched.
They're bound to be.
Dent's a good copper,
he just doesn't know what's hit him.
Which is why he needs
a strong leader.
Sadly,
we both know this has scapegoat
or demotion written all over it.
You don't know that.
Maybe not.
How are you doing with the signal?
Have you spoken to your?
Daughter. No.
But that's not the signal.
Let's just say I
I wasn't always there for her.
Complicated things, families.
Talking of which, I've emailed you
everything on Abbie,
Rory and their parents' drugs bust.
And Kane.
PHONE CHIMES
So, car is registered
to a Lydia Maddox.
Maddox? Parked up in a field
on the edge of town.
And you will never guess what.
Mm-hm?
She's got history
with Gerry Rees-Mortimer.
Fill me in on the way.
Mm-hm.
Anything in the files
you were looking at?
The Summerfields' bust.
A massive party.
Someone grassed on them -
an anonymous tip-off.
Parents got arrested and
and after that?
Their lives,
the lives of everyone in the band,
were never the same again.
DOG BARKING
This way! This way.
Come on, there's a good boy.
This way.
Good boy, good boy. OK.
Thought we told you to leave.
I just solved your crime for you.
I found Rachel.
Then I led you to old man Foster.
You saw my post, right?
Wrong!
You accused a vulnerable man
of committing a crime
he almost certainly didn't commit.
Oh, come on. He's in on it.
He knew Rachel and her dad
from years ago.
He told me that.
He's an old man with dementia
who used to teach her friends.
He's got nothing to do with
the deaths or Gerry Rees-Mortimer.
Really?
Let's see what the press think.
Don't get holier than thou with me,
I'm skint.
I'm living out of this wreck
for Christ sake.
I'm just trying to get by.
I haven't committed any crime.
Depends on who you talk to,
Ms Maddox.
Gerry Rees-Mortimer's lawyers
seem to think you have.
So he may not know who you are,
but a gagging order
was taken out against you
for another social media account
you ran,
under the name Lydia Maddox,
dedicated to bringing
Gerry Rees-Mortimer down.
You're not trying to be
a podcaster at all.
You're trying to get revenge
on the man who bought your company.
BOUGHT my company?
Who swallowed my company,
bankrupted me and spat me out!
What were you hoping to prove,
Lydia?
That he's corrupt.
That he had something to do
with Rachel's death.
And don't believe
that grieving father act.
He's a fraud.
Why would he kill his daughter?
Because she saw the light.
That's why she stopped working
for him.
Because she hated his corporate
ethos and knew it sucked.
And you know this how?
I spoke to other employees.
Rumour is she had dirt on him.
CAR ENGINE STARTS
What are we looking for?
Not sure yet.
Dent said that these were all
of Rachel's belongings.
Her father seemed very keen
to get them back. Right.
Forensics just confirmed
that the animal trap found
at Foster Lang's house is not
the one used to sever the hand.
OK.
Anything in the ripped photographs?
There is a second set
of unidentified prints.
We've sent fragments off
for analysis.
Traces of an organosulfur compound
no-one recognises.
Well, let me know
if they come back with anything.
Boss?
Mm-hm?
Travel itinerary. One way.
Details of a new
Australian bank account.
Like we thought -
starting a new life.
Uh, Rachel wasn't just coming back
for a trip down memory lane.
She was coming back to say goodbye.
And this was her insurance
in case her father
tried to stop her.
No wonder he wants
her belongings back.
What is it?
A draft press release
detailing Gerry Rees-Mortimer's
unethical business practices.
Check out the headings.
Uh, Misleading Shareholders,
Misappropriation of Assets,
Harassment and Blackmail.
Like father, like daughter.
She was prepared
to take him down if needs be.
Which gives him a whole new motive.
Mm-hm.
A couple of things.
You were right about Gerry
staying here a lot. Mm-hm?
Dent checked the bookings,
and last summer, Gerry
was pretty much here all the time.
More to the point
Leo Braxton's finances
have come back.
They've had a recent boost.
Leo Braxton isn't here, is he?
No.
He said he was gonna go and let off
some steam at the motocross.
And I'm quite tired too,
so if you don't mind.
You didn't come here
to stop Rachel starting a new life
on the other side of the world.
You needed to stop her
publicly ruining your reputation.
She prepared a press release
as insurance
in case you tried
to stop her leaving.
Did you come all this way
to negotiate?
Or was she just another deal to you?
A deal you couldn't afford to lose.
I'd like you to leave.
The day before Rachel and Oz
went missing,
you paid £50,000
into Leo Braxton's account.
Yeah, this place is struggling.
I'm an investor.
I invest in business!
£50,000 is a lot of money.
I'm a generous man.
Me and Leo go back a long way.
I've got more time for him
than the others.
He's made something of himself,
unlike Alex, who wasted his time
becoming some two-bit DJ.
Mr Rees-Mortimer,
what did Leo Braxton have to do
in return for his money?
What he does best.
Look after this place.
Now, if you want to continue
this conversation,
I suggest we go through solicitors.
Then it would be transactional.
Everything you do is transactional.
Works for me.
Parental love should never be that.
And why did you come here
so much last summer?
Well, I didn't.
I've no idea
what you're talking about.
We need to check
those booking dates,
see if they coincide with when
Oz returned to Australia.
Yeah, will do.
Boss?
Why are you so interested
in Rory Summerfield's socials?
No, it's not just his socials
I'm interested in.
It's one of his followers.
It's something Gerry said.
A two-bit DJ.
Right.
I don't think Rory
was ever looking for Rachel and Oz.
I think he was looking for Alex.
What? I didn't know
they knew each other.
No. Rory was at most
of Alex's DJ gigs by the looks.
And I think he was
the "younger friend" in London.
HE SNIFFLES
Uh, Dent, you'll need to send
all of this over in an email.
Every single shotgun licence.
Thanks.
Abbie Summerfield
has a shotgun licence.
Kane Harrison hasn't.
Or rather can't
because he has a criminal record.
The party,
the one the Summerfields had
What about it?
According to the files,
not everyone was there.
Has he got much longer?
No. His time's more than up.
He's giving him a bit extra.
He was pretty cut up
when I mentioned Alex's death.
Guess we all are, you know.
Especially Rory, I imagine.
Rory?
Him and Alex were clearly close.
Helping him with his DJ-ing,
quite the team.
Oh, that. Yeah.
I guess Rory's starting
to spread his wings.
Drink, drugs,
girlfriends, boyfriends
Well, he's just exploring, isn't he?
All just phases.
Must have reminded you
of your mum and dad
all that partying.
Not really.
Alex recently came out
as bisexual
..I'm sure that wasn't a problem
for either of you? No.
Consenting adults and all that.
They can do what they want.
Couldn't agree more.
It must have been tough
when your parents were sent down
and you went into care.
Rory was, what, four?
And he was taken away from you.
All you wanna do is protect them,
keep them safe.
And you got your brother back.
Must have been quite a battle.
Well, it's family, innit?
It's what you do.
What's your point?
My point is,
it's the hardest thing -
how to protect your kids.
Or in Abbie's case, Rory.
Yeah, well,
you'll have to excuse us,
but we need to go
and get him off now.
And we need to speak to Rory.
Rory!
Police need a word!
Your time's up, Leo!
What the hell's he doing?
Rory, no!
Nice, Chet.
You're going nowhere, mate. Come on.
Get off!
Whoa, wait!
Rory, what the hell are you doing?!
What do you think?!
Trying to get away from you two!
Because you killed Alex!
I know you did! You killed him!
That's a serious accusation, Rory.
It's true, and they know it.
He's confused. It's fine.
It's not, though, is it?
Is it?!
You killed Alex, didn't you?!
No. Rory, of course we didn't.
This is all my fault.
I'm the reason he's dead,
they're all dead.
Do we have to do this right now?
Yes, Mr Harrison,
we have to do this right now.
None of this is your fault.
You've done nothing wrong.
I knew Alex.
I liked him.
We know. And there's nothing
to be ashamed of.
No, love, there isn't. It's fine.
We were just looking out for you!
Like you've always done.
Kane did it.
Kane went out to go confront Alex.
I saw him go.
I know he did.
He left and took the gun.
You've got it wrong, mate.
It wasn't like that, right.
Kane, we, thought that
you were involved with Alex,
and Kane was uncomfortable
with that.
Rory, there is an age gap
between you and Alex!
All right?
And you know this is hard for him.
It's hard for him, generally.
Because of the abuse you suffered.
So you went and confronted Alex.
It was your gear that got snagged.
Yeah, well, nothing happened.
Abbie stopped me.
Alex, he explained
that you were just friends
and that he wanted to support you in
a way that he hadn't been supported.
And Alex didn't want you
to have to go through anything
that he'd been through.
I messed up.
I'm so sorry, Rory.
But I swear to you, mate,
I didn't kill anyone.
And you believed Alex?
Yeah.
Yeah, I believed him cos he was
telling the truth about everything.
There's no way he was lying.
About everything?
Leo?
The 50,000,
what did you have to do for it?
Nothing, it was a gift.
An investment.
Can I go now?
Did Gerry Rees-Mortimer come
and stay with you last summer? No.
No, course not.
Dent, it's Harper
Alex, he wanted to come clean
about the past.
He had this, like, memory box
of pictures.
He wanted to reminisce.
The whole thing was like
a confession, basically.
That he was the anonymous tip-off.
The person who wasn't at the party,
the one who reported your parents
to the police.
He'd lived for years feeling guilt
about the impact that had.
How everything ended.
Rachel's return was his chance
to come clean.
Sorry, um, I don't understand.
Why would Alex grass your parents?
Because he was jealous.
Rachel had ended things with Alex
and had started seeing Leo.
And Alex couldn't cope if he wasn't
with Rachel, so that was it.
Gerry didn't want Rachel to have
anything else to do with us,
so he just brought
the whole thing crashing down.
Because the bust affected
not just you and your parents,
it broke up the band.
And Rachel and Leo.
So Leo wasn't at the camper
the other night
when they all met up.
He blew them out,
so he didn't hear Alex's confession.
His list of calls from Rachel,
there was one the next day.
Forty-six minutes. She told him.
Uh, there's something else.
Dent got it wrong.
So, it wasn't Gerry Rees-Mortimer
staying at The Boar and Brisket
all last summer.
It was a different Rees-Mortimer.
Rachel?
On a break from Oz. She came back.
To do what?
Rekindle her relationship with Leo?
Could be.
PHONE RINGS
Soraya?
Got it.
The sulphur compound
on the ripped pictures -
dithiapentane.
Truffle oil to you and me.
Leo.
HARPER: Leo?
Come.
ELLIS: Don't!
Why not?
Just come away from the edge, Leo.
This is all his fault all of it.
Rachel told you
about Alex's confession.
Yeah.
Yeah.
She thought I should know.
That I was never good enough
for Rachel
..but she is the one thing
that I ever wanted.
And I got her.
I won her love.
Only Alex Alex ended it.
The night of the raid,
he called the police.
I thought it was my fault.
It was something I'd done or
or hadn't done.
Only last summer, she came back.
She just walked in one day
like nothing had changed.
Another summer together.
Another summer that ended.
Rachel and Oz had split up.
You know, they they didn't think
they could they could hack it
at opposite ends of the world.
So we gave us a go.
I wasn't her forever person.
She went back to him.
Heartbreak again.
And again and again
All because of Alex.
He took my life away from me.
So you wanted to take revenge?
I don't know what I wanted.
I just knew I had to confront him.
So you went to his cottage
'He ran away.
'He was going to go and see
Rachel and Oz anyway
'for their last night here.'
I followed him.
You rang Rachel on the way.
PHONE RINGING
She didn't pick up.
So you tracked him down.
Did you mean to hurt him?
No.
'There was a trap on the ground.
'Alex went to go grab it.
It was self-defence.'
ALEX SCREAMS IN PAIN
'The trap just went off.'
Rachel and Oz,
they heard the screams.
PHONE RINGING,
SHE YELPS
HE CHUCKLES
DISTANT SCREAMING
They came running.
'Oz and I fought'
And Alex, he
grabbed Rachel's phone
and his hand
..and he ran away.
'I didn't mean
for any of this to happen.
'I didn't.'
It just got so crazy.
Oz coming at me.
Rachel screaming at me.
Leo, please! Leo!
I lost it.
GUNSHO
Rachel tried to save Oz.
I tried to stop her, but I couldn't.
The love of my life
..dived in there
to save the love of hers.
HE SOBS
Here you go.
Nice one.
Mate, I'm sorry, I got it wrong
about the bookings
at The Boar And Brisket.
Archie, it's not a problem.
Mistakes happen.
I came to thank you.
No need.
Well, far be it from me
to tell anyone what to do,
but I took gardening leave once.
It wasn't
all it was cracked up to be.
Dent and the team,
they just need a steer.
