Ludwig (2024) s01e03 Episode Script

Episode 3

1
James didn't just vanish.
He left breadcrumbs,
coded messages, a puzzle.
I didn't want to see DI Neville
transferred any more than you did
but, after all that Sinclair
business, there was no other option.
I'm looking for Matt Neville.
He lives here.
He did. Moved out a month ago.
The first page has been torn out.
"Sinclair". And look at the bottom.
"Zieg R".
Roger Sinclair, disturbed
a burglar who then killed him
in a panic of self-preservation.
Something has changed.
There's even an arrest!
And look who signed off this one.
DCI Taylor.
Ah!
Sh.
Can you hear that?
Woo!
The acoustics in here are
Do we have any opera
singers amongst us that
maybe want to try hitting the
Right, come on. This way.
The actual date of construction
is unknown, of course -
it's not called the
Dark Ages for no reason.
Speaking of which,
why is this curtain closed?
OK, you're going to
love this next bit.
Nobody knows if it's
an architectural fluke
or God's own design, but
every afternoon the sun hits
the stained-glass windows
hidden behind those curtains,
and this entire place
is treated to a light-show
that would put a disco to shame.
THEY MUTTER
Argh!
ZIPPING
Do you know who she was?
Yes, sir.
Meghan Rowlands. 21.
American, post-grad.
Also the morning tour guide.
Really?
Yeah. Then where's her group?
Presumably she had a group.
Where are they?
Did they just leave
without their tour guide?
Oh, oh, ChiefI actually think
that is exactly what they did.
They run two walking tours a day.
A full circle of Cambridge,
always starting in the square
and ending here.
This is basically the last stop.
They're given some spiel about
the history of the place,
then basically left to wander
and leave of their own accord.
Well, then she must have had
to come back for some reason,
forgotten something -
her bag maybe?
She had it on her when she died.
Look, I mean, it obviously didn't
happen whilst they were still here,
otherwise someone would have seen.
Perhaps.
Perhaps not.
Sir?
Well, whatever they witnessed,
they were the last people to see
her alive and we have no idea
who they are or how to find them.
Oh, actually, Chief, they had
to fill in their email addresses
when they bought the tickets, so
Ha-ha! God bless
mail list marketing.
All I'm saying maybe we should,
you know, keep an open mind here.
What's happening now?
You fill him in. I'll
I'll go do some more digging.
Fill me in on what?
I thought it would be a good idea
to employ a member of Gen Z
to do a deep dive on
this Roger Sinclair chap.
And now
I rather wish that I hadn't.
Sinclair was a conspiracy theorist -
and a pretty batty one at that.
Course, you can imagine
how Henry's taken this.
He's now got his father
single-handedly
fighting the Illuminati.
I highly doubt he believes that.
Really? It makes
his father the hero.
Isn't that what every boy wants?
How was your day?
Someone murdered a
tour guide in a church.
Yes, no, sorry. I meant,
"How was your day in terms
of our investigation?"
Right, yes, sorry.
Well, I've actually been looking
over the original crime scene report
again, and everything
about it seems
No, John, you've read
that over and over again.
What you were supposed to be do
today is get closer to DI Carter.
I really wish you'd stop
phrasing it like that.
It sounds like I'm supposed to go
camping with him or something.
Look, I I tried, OK?
I did exactly what you said.
I found my moment
and attempted some
..non-work related casual
conversation with him.
No phone.
Given her age and occupation,
that's a bit
That's a bit strange. Holly,
do you think you could get a?
Already found her. She's got
an active phone contract.
Ooh, we should grab
food whilst we can.
Oh. Yes, together.
Good idea. Let's do that.
Let'sgrab food.
Do you followfootball at all?
And apparently he does.
Liverpool FC.
He's a season ticket holder.
What?
John, this Russell character
magically appeared at the exact
same time as James vanished.
He's taking personal calls
from Chief Constable Ziegler,
the one person that we do
know is involved in all this,
then he lies to you about it,
and despite all that we
know nothing about him.
I'm sorry, but supporting
Liverpool does not quite cut it.
You'll be asking him what
his favourite colour is next.
It's probably red.
No, John, it doesn't matter.
It doesn't help us.
Look, what we need is personal
information - who he is,
where did he come from?
What's his connection to Ziegler?
I mean, you spend
eight hours a day with him.
You need to tease out
some kind of backstory.
I mean, you're the one that's
supposed to be a genius round here.
Two points above actually,
but I find that never helps
when it comes tochatting.
Couldn't you do a high dive on him?
Oh, I tried that. It turns out
he's got an even less of
an online presence than
..well, you.
I have been looking into
their supposed burglar,
this guy they arrested, Rhys Bowen.
He lives with his mother
up on Heywood Rise.
Actually she's started
a crowd-funder for his appeal.
See?
£10?
That's not going to be
anywhere near enough.
Now, ah, listen -
and don't say, "No," OK?
I'm not committing to that. I don't
know what you're going to say.
Well, does it matter? I've told
you not to, so you can't now.
I really don't think that's
legally enforceable.
I'm going to go
and visit her tomorrow.
It's fine, it's fine.
I've planned it all. I'm going to
say that I am a local journalist
covering her story, and she might
arrange for me to meet her son.
What? In prison?!
Well, no. I thought they might
let him out on a day release
and I could see him
in a local Costa.
Yes, in prison.
It's no more dangerous
than what you're doing.
Yes, but it doesn't
matter what happens to me.
Of course it does.
Not as much.
That's very sweet, John. Thank you.
I'm still going, though.
What if I said more reasons
why you shouldn't go?
I'd probably tell you that
I'm not discussing it any further.
That does sound like
something you'd say.
Pity, because I had
some really good ones.
Guv.
Ah. Thanks.
Oh, there's sugar in it!
Ah Yeah, there is.
Which, as you know, is
exactly how I like it.
Cheers!
Good news, Guv.
Every single one of the
tour group replied overnight.
We have names,
addresses, everything.
Oh, I was hoping
one of them wouldn't,
cos that would've meant that
they were probably the killer.
Right, well, in that
case, bad news, Guv.
We've identified all the suspects.
Mr and Mrs Tate live locally.
The tour was an anniversary
surprise, apparently.
And they say romance is dead.
Ah, Myles North and Yuna Chen,
they're roommates and students.
They live near the college.
And these three ladies here
are actually mother, daughter
and grand-daughter.
They're over from France.
Erm, sir?
Morning. I'm going to be quick.
We're cribbing officers
from every department.
I need three from you,
the best you've got -
we're putting together
an emergency taskforce.
For what, ma'am?
To find the missing son
of a millionaire.
Oh, a kidnapping?
I wouldn't have thought
so, Sergeant Finch.
The individual in question
is Jordan Halshaw.
Oh
Sorry to disappoint!
Oh. No, no, no, I wasn't
I'd never I wouldn't
Oh, she's just always
wanted to do a kidnapping.
Investigate one, I mean.
Ah, sorry, who exactly
is Jordan Halshaw?
DCI Taylor, would you like
to fill in our new DI
on the Halshaws of Cambridge?
Oh, of course, yes. Well, erm
They're, ah
Well, erm Perhaps Constable Evans
would like the honour?
Oh, sure. Thanks.
Well, he's Cameron Halshaw's son.
Cameron Halshaw Developments? You've
probably seen the signs everywhere.
Bit of a Halshaw junior
is a walking liability.
He's in and out of rehab,
smashing up sports-cars
and often picked up with bags of
cash he has no explanation for
nor any particular concern
about being found with.
And his father has
influential friends.
Three officers.
No complaining.
Is this the church
murder from yesterday?
Talk me through it.
Who, me?
Well, I'm led to believe that
you've been performing miracles
recently, DCI Taylor.
I'm certainly keen to witness it.
Well, OK, then. Er
Well, the
The young lady in question was
found here, inside this alcove.
The curtain had been
closed to hide the body
and we've already confirmed that
the murder must have occurred
whilst there were other people
still on or around the premises,
these people here,
there are seven of them.
which creates a fairly
traditional spatial puzzle.
Actually, in this case,
it's a perceptual puzzle,
which is a sub-category of spatial.
It requires us to imagine the
visual point-of-view of the killer,
or indeed the victim,
put ourselves inside the alcove
and ask what you can
see from that space,
which in turn, obviously,
would tell us who could see them
and where they'd need to
be positioned to do so.
In this instance, the positions are
limited,
mostly thanks to
medieval architecture's reliance
on columns, pillars,
arches and grilles.
Blind spot
..blind spot, blind spot,
blind spot
The puzzle is impossible.
Solving it would require there to
be fewer variables than suspects,
which, as I've just demonstrated,
is clearly not the case.
Any one of them could have done it.
I think we're going to need to
find a motive with this one. Oh!
You haven't been
looking into motives?
Well, they're very
secondary, aren't they?
If you can demonstrate
who did it and how,
then the why doesn't really matter.
Though, we obviously
intend to explore them.
Obviously.
Erm I really think we should
head down to the control room now.
OK, I'll catch you up.
DCI Carter, could we?
Um, yes, yes, of course, sir.
The why matters, Taylor.
Find it.
Which paper did you
say you were from?
The Cambridge Herald.
Oh, I don't think
I've heard of that one.
Oh, well, it's mostly online.
Is that Rhys?
Yes.
I always thought he looked
like an angel in that one.
I'm sorry.
It's all just so, er
Do you have children?
Yes. Then, you know how I feel.
He was with me that whole evening.
You make sure you write that
because I told the police,
but they wouldn't believe.
You alibied him?
They didn't believe me.
Which detective did you speak to?
I don't know.
There were lots of different ones.
They kept coming for days,
trying to get me to change my story,
but I wouldn't,
because he was here,
that whole night.
We watched the soaps.
On what grounds did they arrest him?
They said there were
fingerprints, DNA,
and that a witness
had seen him leaving.
He pled guilty.
So, he confessed, but you
You said he was here all night.
He was! It makes no sense.
Will you mention the Crowdfunder?
Yes.
Mrs Bowen, sorry to ask.
Had Rhys been in
trouble with the police?
Was he in any kind of trouble?
Burglary?
Mm
But he'd never hurt anybody.
Never.
They've made a mistake.
Would you like to take a photo?
Erm, perhaps with this?
Mm
SHUTTER CLICKS
Mrs Bowen,
do you think there is any way
that I could speak to your son?
You could come back tomorrow.
He calls every Wednesday.
He's, er
He's quite striking, isn't he,
Chief Constable Ziegler?
I mean, sure, I guess. Yes.
Very tall.
Well, what do you think?
Yeah, he's quite tall, yes.
We should probably
What are you doing?
I said, "Don't rub it in!"
I wasn't rubbing it,
I was wiping it!
Well, don't wipe it either,
you have to dab it, like this
Mr and Mrs Tate, DI Carter.
Oh, yeah, I've got one
of those, as well
And this is DCI Taylor. Thanks for
coming in. That's quite all right.
Yeah, although, so far, nobody's
actually told us what this is about.
It's rather serious, I'm afraid.
We're investigating a murder.
Ah! There it is! Yeah.
See?
Oh That's going
to need dry cleaning.
Egg?
You have to hold it, Guv.
I am holding it.
No, hold the button in.
Hold it in, yes.
Sorry, I
I have a different one at home.
I can't believe it.
How could anybody want
to hurt that poor girl?
She was lovely, wasn't she?
American.
She had us laughing all morning.
Even him.
OK, then, erm That's everyone,
so, I mean, let me start
by saying that, no, your ears are
not deceiving you, I am an American.
Er Please don't hold it against
me, I assure you, I'm not armed.
FORCED LAUGHTER
So, just out of interest, do
Do we have any locals here?
Yes.
You You're from Cambridge?
Yes.
What brings you on our tour today?
Oh, it's It's our anniversary.
Happy anniversary. That's
That's lovely Not
last minute, I hope.
And how about you young ladies?
Erm I have Manon,
I've got Tanya and I I
I've got Katya
Excuse my granddaughter.
Oh! Where are you from? Paris.
Ah, and it's Myles and Yuna, right?
Where are you guys from?
The Isle Of Man.
The Isle Of Man, OK.
Quite the cultural melting
pot we've got this morning.
That is just the way I like it.
Well, then, shall we allez?
So, you say you were
together for the whole tour.
Did anything seem off, at all?
Anyone acting strangely?
No, everyone seemed
to enjoy themselves.
The couple from the Isle Of Man
didn't pay attention,
just kept chatting and
giggling to each other,
and one of the French
ones was never off her phone.
They've got the attention
span of a goldfish these days.
Too much internet.
I hate the internet!
Hate it!
CLEARS THROA
So, what made you choose the tour
for your anniversary, then?
HE EXHALES
I know what you're
thinking, Detective.
30 years of marriage
and what do I get her?
A £20 walking tour of Cambridge.
Each.
£20 each so, overall,
you spent 40 on the gift.
Is that still quite low?
Well, we had agreed not
to get each other anything.
My husband was made
redundant late last year,
and he's only just
started working again.
We've had a lean few months,
that's all.
I always promised I'd get you
a diamond ring for our 30th.
Well, save up for our 40th then.
Don't be so stupid.
I loved my £20 walking tour.
At least, I did.
I was going to buy a tea towel.
Sir?
Sorry.
They They do a few
photo-stops on the way round,
then whack the pictures
up on a website,
where you can then get them
stuck on a variety of merchandise,
includingtea towels.
No photos from yesterday.
It looks like they only upload
them over the weekends.
Bit basic, aren't they?
Looks like they were done on a
phone, which I guess confirms that
she would have had one on her. Has
Holly got any further with that yet?
They're red-taping her,
but she reckons she'll have
a call log by the end of tomorrow.
They did say, there is
no sign of usage since, though.
It appears the phones
been switched off.
Sir, the French women are here.
Come on then, Guv.
Well, I really hope you're
not my Secret Santa this year.
What? No, it's It's the case.
That's not a bad idea
for Mum, though.
The plan is 22 cities
in three months.
Right
That's quite an expensive holiday.
Oh, er, we're not rich women,
Detective, um
My father passed away recently,
left us some money.
I'm sorry for your loss.
Don't be, we were separated -
and separated for good reason.
And as my beautiful daughter
here is divorced
and my even more
beautiful granddaughter
recently had her own heart
broken for the first time,
I decided we needed some
adventure in our lives,
sans-hommes.
"Without men".
Yes, I know.
So it's an Eat, Pray, Love thing?
Yes, Detective! Exactement!
I can't stop thinking about her.
She She was my age,
her whole life ahead of her
OK.
Say, "Cheese!"
Cheese!
Lovely, one for the grandkids.
She washappy,
bubbly,
seemed to love her job.
All right, ladies, we'll have
some with the bridge behind.
OK, let me see those pearly whites.
In three, two, one
Eee! Lovely!
The whole day was just, erm
Nice, you know?
Right, do you remember the last time
you all actually
saw Meghan Rowlands?
The last stop, the church,
yeah, she was at the altar,
whilst we were looking around.
The altar, with the
stained-glass window?
Yes, we went to look at the
features and then, as we left,
she was gone,
the curtain was closed.
You You're sure about that?
The curtain being closed?
I know what a closed curtain
looks like, Inspector.
Wait, does that mean she?
She'd already been killed
..whilst we were still there?
I
Look, I
I understand this sort of thing
always comes as a shock.
She was my best friend!
Really?
What?
After one tour?
Is that normal?
No. Um
Sorry, am I to understand that you
knew Ms Rowlands prior to the trip?
Of course we knew her!
We shared halls, last year.
But, according to
You You told her and
And the group that you were
visitors from the Isle Of Man?
Look, we'd often take her tour.
Any time she was short on numbers,
she'd text us to stand in.
I am so sorry for your loss.
If we'd known that you
actually, er, knew her,
We'd, erm We'd
Can you tell me about
the last time you saw her?
The church.
Now, erm, nobody really knows,
whether it was deliberately
designed this way or not, and it
It very much depends
on the cloud coverage,
but under the right conditions,
from midday
IE, a couple of minutes.
..the sun hits that glass
and this whole
chamber becomes filled
with every colour of the spectrum.
It's quite something.
And that's it,
I hope you all had a good time,
maybe learned something,
made a few memories.
Please feel free to wander
and peruse at your leisure
andthank you. Merci!
Meghan was stood under
the magic window.
I remember one of the
French women, the younger one,
she was going over to talk to her.
Bumped into that anniversary bloke.
Didn't even apologise.
Why did you even wander around?
If you were always
taking this tour, you
You must have seen
everything that there is to see.
I like to play the organ.
Well, it's them. It has to be.
They're the only ones with
a connection to the victim
and, from their own accounts,
the only ones that were in there.
Oh, I'm sorry. Did you want one?
Not if I have to ask, no.
Connections don't matter.
The motive can't predate the tour.
Do you know what?
I always share mine with you.
DC Evans, do you mind?
Guv, what do you mean,
"The motive can't predate the tour"?
Well, it wasn't planned
in advance, was it?
People who plan murders in advance
don't commit them in front
of six potential witnesses
and then write their email
address down for good measure.
No. Whatever the motive was,
it formed during the tour itself.
What could possibly happen during
a two-hour walking tour
that could turn someone who wasn't
a killer at the start
into one by the end?
Chief Constable Ziegler
was at the station today.
He and DI Carter talked privately.
What about?
I don't know. I couldn't
think of a way of asking.
How about, "What were you and Chief
Constable Ziegler talking about?"
Oh
Would that have worked?
Did you tell him?
Ah, no sweetheart. He's only just
The burglar, he's innocent.
He was with his mum
the entire night.
That's what she told me, and the
police but they didn't believe her -
or claimed not to.
Next thing she knows,
he's signing a confession.
So he pleaded guilty?
Well, they always do. Have you
never seen Making A Murderer?
No.
I did see Crimewatch once.
Never again.
Oh, John, it was awful.
She thinks I'm a journalist
working for a newspaper
I've completely made up, thinks
it's going to be in the press,
thinks someone's actually
going to help her now.
But you are helping her.
It's the same as Dad was.
I mean, it's obvious
what's happened, isn't it?
This Sinclair guy, this blogger,
he was about to break a story,
a BIG one, but they got
to him first. Who did?
I don't know, the government,
the royal family, the Freemasons.
They killed Sinclair,
they framed Bowen
and, when Dad wouldn't drop it,
they started coming after him.
That all seems a bit
..big.
Of course it's big.
It has to be big, doesn't it?
Dad wouldn't just
abandon us if it wasn't.
Of course he wouldn't.
"Freemasons"?!
I know. He doesn't
actually believe that.
He's just looking for a bit
of hope from the man of the house.
That's you, by the way.
Oh, I see.
What should I have said?
Rule of thumb, whatever
you think they want to hear.
You mean, lie?
Yeah, God, if it makes them
happy, yes, lie your pants off!
Like I did today.
I am helping her, aren't I, John?
I mean, ultimately.
I mean, I know we're trying
to find James, but
..maybe, by doing that
..we actually get an
innocent man out of prison?
I thought he was a burglar.
I mean, yes, you
You are helping.
And I say that with my pants
still very firmly on.
That's reassuring
on multiple levels.
Can I help you?
This is mine.
No, it isn't. I've had it
since I was a little kid.
Dad gave me it.
Yes, our dad gave it to us.
Me and James, we shared it.
I was obsessed with this thing,
particularly after Dad left.
Never put it down.
Until your dad took it
away from me and hid it.
Why'd he do that?
As a kindness.
He knew that our dad
was never coming back.
Same as I know that yours is.
How?
Because I'm in the unenviable
position of knowing the difference
between a father
that loves his family
and a father that didn't.
Uncle John, how come
you never got married?
I left it too late.
Morning! Morning.
Why are you pretending to yawn?
Good question.
Oh, morning, Guvs. Did you
hear they found Jordan Halshaw?
The missing millionaire's kid?
Yeah. Fished him out the Cam this
morning. Looks like he drowned.
Apparently, he'd been camping out
in one of his dad's
old developments,
the empty office block they're
renovating on Mallard's Way.
They found a sleeping bag, takeaway
wrappers, drug paraphernalia.
I can't say I'm surprised.
Yes, but do you know
who notified the family?
Chief Constable Ziegler.
In person.
Have you ever heard of that before?
Well, whatever the Chief Constable
chooses to do is his business.
Ours is this.
I don't suppose you had one of your
"eureka" moments overnight, did you?
No, I didn't. Did you?
I don't tend to have them with
quite the same frequency as you do,
but I do think the missing phone
has to be important somehow.
Maybe that was the motive.
The acquisition of her phone?
Why? Was it a particularly nice one?
Sorry?
Ah, Holly, excellent timing.
This phone of Ms Rowlands,
was it nice?
Was it what? I don't know
what you're talking about.
Call-logs and text messages
from the last month, here.
Can I see those, please?
Oh, thank goodness for that.
A coincidence.
We needed one of those.
I mean, ideally we'd have three
to be statistically significant,
but one's a start.
There, see?
The last call, just before midday.
00 33 1.
So that would mean
That around the same
time she was murdered,
someone used her phone to
make a call to Paris, France.
I don't understand.
Well, that is a Parisian
phone number, is it not?
Yes. And?
Well, we've traced it, obviously.
Does the name "Paul Tremblay"
mean anything to you?
He's my, um, boyfriend.
Ex-boyfriend. Why?
We've been texting again since Rome.
I didn't want to tell you,
either of you,
because this whole thing, this whole
trip, it was meant to be the
"Sans hommes"?
Yes, thank you.
It's not like everything's
forgiven or forgotten.
We're working through it.
On that day alone,
we had already fallen out
and made up twice by the time
we got to the church.
And then the signal,
it was bad in there.
Eventually his last
text came through and
.."I still love you."
And then my battery died.
And he had just told me he loved me.
He saw that I had read it,
and he got no response.
So she let me use her phone.
I offered to pay and she said, "No."
She was very kind.
Oh, wait, so where's the phone now?
What do you mean?
I gave her it back.
Well, this is very disappointing.
Excusez-moi?
No, he's right, Katya. It is.
You should have told me.
You think I would be angry?
Disapprove?
All I ever want is for you,
for any of us, to be happy.
Does, ah
Does that include me?
What?
Theman in Athens, in the shirt.
Huh? The one who
bought me the coffee.
We have been talking
..rather a lot.
Maman! What? I'm 70,
I'm not dead.
So I was the only one,
this whole trip,
eating, praying and loving alone?
D'accord.
Detective Inspector, are you
free for dinner at all tonight?
Erm
Pfffff
Why did you tell her
you were married?
Oh, what was I supposed to say -
that it would be inappropriate of me
to date somebody
involved with the?
Actually, that's exactly
what I should've said.
Because you're not married, are you?
No, of course I'm not.
You know I'm not.
What are you What are you doing?
I'm not married!
Never have been married and I
never will be married, all right?!
Sorry.
Can we just drop it?
Focus on what matters?
Like the fact that we had one lead
and now we have none.
It IS the phone.
It has to be. As random
as everything seems,
the killer must have
taken it for a reason.
Wasn't she using it to
take photos during the tour?
Doors opening.
Oh Doors closing.
Guv? We need to go
back to the church.
Hello!
They're all of the same places.
Well, they would be, wouldn't it?
It's the same tour, chief,
day after day.
Look, are you going to let me in on
what you're thinking here, or?
I'm thinking, "What if one of the
photos she took the other day
"is the reason she was killed?"
Well, something must have
happened on that tour that
..sealed her fate, and the
missing phone's all we've got left.
Well, yeah, but we
don't even have that
and, if your theory is correct,
then the killer would've almost
certainly gotten rid of it by now.
All right, then, what if we used
basic critical thinking to work out
the most likely scenario of
what that photo might have been,
without actually seeing
the photo itself?
Well, yeah, that would be quite
something, chief, wouldn't it?
And how exactly would we do that?
We could take the tour.
I'll lead the way.
You get the photos from their
website and go on your phone
The next one is King's College.
Erm
Ah, King's College
is that way, chief.
Wait, I thought you went
to university here?
Yes, just
..checking it hadn'tmoved.
What, since 1441?
Yes.
This is it,
the last stop before
the crime scene.
Now, that's a statistically
significant number of coincidences.
What, uh? What is?
Three.
Which basically means that
they're not. Not what?
Coincidences.
Do you think we could get
everyone back to the church?
And perhaps
Chief Constable Ziegler, too?
What? Thethe
Chief Constable? Why?
Unfortunately, we need him.
Plus, he seemed keen to
see me perform miracles.
Seems as good a place as any.
Sorry.
DOOR OPENS
Make this good.
Ah
Therethere was a very tough
question at the heart of this case.
What could possibly occur during
a two-hour walking tour
to turn someone who wasn't a killer
at the start of it
into one by the end?
But it turns out it was
never a question, at all.
It wasit was a riddle.
And like all good riddles,
the answer is a trick one.
Because, actually,
nothing could do that.
They were already a killer.
We had two pages of the
puzzle book stuck together.
We weren't investigating one murder.
We were investigating two.
Two? Yes, Ms Chen.
Your friend's and a gentleman
by the name of Jordan Halshaw.
That's the one they found
in the river this morning.
Yes, it is, Mrs Tate.
I believe, at that point,
the speculation was drowning.
But I-I assume that
that they've done a
..a how-did-they-die test
Postmortem?
..postmortem, since then.
We have.
Sorry, DCI Taylor, are you
telling me you know who did it?
I do, yes.
In fact, I should be able to get
you a confession in a minute.
Hang on.
When you're investigating two cases,
but you only think
you're investigating one,
nothing is going to make any sense.
Instead, it becomes a
lateral thinking puzzle.
You have to recognise that
something is missing,
and look for what that
is in the variables
which, in this case, took
the form of coincidences.
A statistically significant
number of coincidences.
Exactly, three.
Enough to demonstrate that
there's a high likelihood
that they're not
coincidences at all.
In this instance, the first
coincidence was the location
of the final photo stop on
the tour, Mallard's Way.
Site of the very development
that the ill-fated Mr Halshaw
had been camping out in.
A development that would be
perfectly framed in the background
of any photograph you
might take in that spot.
Which, of course, Ms Rowlands did -
coincidence number two -
on the one and only key piece
of evidence that was missing
from her crime scene, her phone.
A development which was also
accompanied by a small sign,
the inscription upon which gives
us our third coincidence.
Protected by Cambridge
Complete Security.
Your connection to both events is
a coincidence too far, Mr Tate.
So, was it an accident?
Did he surprise you during
your rounds, or?
Uh, I-I
I'm sorry, but I don'tdon't have
a clue what you're talking about.
I see that stain is still there.
Am I to take it the uniform
still hasn't been dry-cleaned?
Am I also right in assuming
that you were wearing it
on the day in question?
I think what DCI Taylor is trying
to tell you is that,
if you had any form of physical
contact with Mr Halshaw -
a confrontation,
perhaps, a struggle -
then even something as small
as a single flake of skin on
that uniform would prove it.
Do we need to send
it for testing, or?
There were empty cans.
Blankets, needles.
I-I assumed some junkie had
broken in and was squatting there.
Then he came back.
Physically attacked me.
I mean, he-he was so out of it,
I I don't even think
he understood what he was doing.
I didn't mean to hurt him.
I got an arm around him.
I tried to hold him. I
I just wanted him to stop.
But instead
Then it was self-defence.
It was self-defence.
It wasn't your fault.
You didn't need
You should have called the
police, explained it all.
Theythey would have
And the money?
Jordan Halshaw took £8,000
from his father's safe
on the day he disappeared.
It was in a bag.
And now?
Hidden, at home.
What?
Adrian
Why?
Look, I'm sorry, but what
exactly does any of this
have to do with Meghan?
Ah, yes, goodgood question,
Mr North.
You see, we were acting under
the assumption that the motive
for her murder must have
somehow formed during the tour.
But we never thought
to ask which tour.
These, of course, they take place
twice a day, seven days a week,
and they always use
the same photo stops.
You can't have been certain
whether your deed
had been captured on camera
..but you also
couldn't take the risk.
You had to get that phone.
So you used your own
anniversary as cover.
It wasn't like that.
I-I
I had different plans for our
anniversary, bigger ones,
better ones, but
but I had to try and protect us.
I spent that whole trip,
watching her
..waiting for her to put
that bag down and turn away,
just once, just for one moment.
But she never did.
Not till right at the very end.
Let me help.
Oh, thank you.
Oh
Thank you.
Can I have it, please?
Give me the code. What? No.
Give me it back.
Don't!
I never wanted to hurt her.
I never wanted to hurt anybody,
butbut, with everything
we went through last year,
and for that money to just
fall in my lap like that, I
I was going to get that
diamond ring, finally.
The one I'd always promised you.
Remember?
She was 21 years old.
Constable.
Constable.
Oh, do No, no, no, I've got this.
One of you, please.
Please stand up, sir.
CLEARS THROA
Adrian Tate, I'm arresting you
on suspicion of murder.
You do not have to say anything,
but anything you do say may
be held against you in court.
C'est la vie.
CRUNCH
Oh, Jesus!
Well, now that's over with,
wewe should probably, er
I was engaged.
She died.
I'mI'm so sorry.
Her name was Mandy.
Mandy Ziegler.
As in?
He helped to fast-track
the transfer.
I couldn't stay there.
But that's all I've ever
asked of him.
He would have been my father-in-law,
but now the only thing we have in
common is a shared grief, and
..I don't want anyone ever
suggesting I used that
..to further my career
or to take advantage.
And, believe me,
if they knew, they would.
I understand.
Thanks, Guv.
Oh, that's better.
Oh
Do you not think I could phase in
the idea of James wearing glasses,
and perhaps stopping
taking sugar?
He's dead.
He can't be.
He He is.
Erm
Erm, he was found
..hanging in his cell this morning.
Wait
..you mean the burglar.
Yes, of course, I mean the burglar.
Who else did you think I meant?
What's going on? What happened?
The man they arrested
for the Sinclair murder
hashas killed himself.
Maybe he didn't.
What if I caused this?
What if he's dead because of me?
I don't see how you could.
I was supposed to talk to him
today. What if they knew that?
"They"?
Yes, "they" - them!
Lucy, erm, perhaps we should
They must have followed me,
tailed me to her house.
Lucy, no, thatthat
doesn't make any
They could be watching us now.
Oh, my God, can you see anyone?
All right, stop! Just stop.
Please.
Look, nobody was tailing you
and nobody is watching you, OK?
If they wanted to follow anyone,
itit would be James, wouldn't it?
Or who they think is James.
Whywhy would they follow his
wife? It doesn't make any sense.
Lucy, the
The man was facing life in prison
for a crime he didn't commit.
What happened is tragic,
but it hardly needs a grand
conspiracy to explain it.
Something is being covered up here.
We know that.
But shadowy figures
orchestrating a suicide
inside a guarded prison cell?
No, it's too much.
It'sit's too
"Big"?
Do you really believe that?
I really do.
You're not just saying what
you think I want to hear?
I think I've already proved
I'm rubbish at that.
Oh, that poor woman.
I know.
SHE SOBS
Do you want me toget
you a coffee?
You make awful coffee.
Do me a favour, John.
Don't solve any murders today.
I'll try really hard not to.
Did you see it?
No.
But I heard it.
MAN SCREAMS,
THUD
It was obviously an accident.
I've never seen
another man die before.
Is there a single person
that works on this site
who is ever where
they're supposed to be?
Listen, is this going
to take much longer?
I'm afraid that's
the least of your problems.
One of them is a murderer.
What if I can't solve the cypher?
The cypher is a puzzle.
Solving puzzles is
literally what you do.
Hello?
What do you think
you're playing at?!
Who is this?
