And I I can't control it.
And I can't control myself.
You always had the answers.
Knew what to do.
What should I do? Tell me, and and I'll do it.
I miss you so much, Billy.
I'm I'm trying to be like you, but I'm failing.
And and I'm I'm flailing.
And I'm cursed.
- [door opens.]
- EVITA: Hi.
Sorry.
I didn't mean to interrupt or anything.
I was just looking for you, and I thought you You know, I'm just gonna stop, before I sound like I was stalking you, which I wasn't.
So It's all right.
How much did you hear? Do you really think you're cursed? I know it sounds stupid.
Not to me.
In fact, there's someone I know who might be able to help.
What are you doing after school? [streetcar bell clangs.]
EVITA: There he is! Our last straggler.
We'd almost given up hope.
Welcome, true believers and skeptics alike, to the Damballah Voodoo Tour.
This is Congo Square, one of the birthplaces of New Orleans voodoo.
On Sundays, in the 18th and 19th centuries, this was the only place the enslaved were allowed to congregate.
So they came here to play music and dance and practice sacred voodoo rituals, that protect, guide and cleanse.
Some even remove curses.
Now during its heyday, New Orleans was the dueling capital of the world.
The last duel ever to be held in the city of New Orleans was right here by, famously, the brothers Wilson, in 1793.
It's unknown the exact reason why they drew weapons against each other, but we do know it happened in the middle of a hurricane.
But it's said that when one fired, and the other didn't, sacrificing his life for his brother [snaps fingers.]
the hurricane ended in an instant.
[church bells ringing.]
The history of St.
Theresa's Church, over yonder, is the history of New Orleans.
It's been destroyed and rebuilt, destroyed and rebuilt.
So you see, there are some places, just like there are some people, that will always stand back up.
And that church is the very church that the most famous of all voodoo priestesses worshiped at.
Now most people are surprised when they learn that Marie Leveau was Catholic.
But, you see, voodoo isn't necessarily its own religion.
That's a common misconception.
Voodoo is, at its core, a diverse collection of religious and cultural traditions that can either stand alone or be added to your faith.
Just as it was for Ms.
Laveau.
You may be wondering why there are so many markings on her tomb.
It's said that, even from beyond the veil, she grants wishes.
Now, can I get a volunteer? You there.
Step on up.
Come on, don't be shy.
First, an "X" is made on the wall of the tomb.
Now, turn around three times.
Take a deep breath.
Make your wish.
And clap your hands once, and only once.
All right, right in here, guys.
Okay.
So this is your, um, family business? [sighs.]
It pays that tuition of ours.
It's cool.
Do you believe in it? As much as I believe in the stories we hear in chapel, I suppose.
But the good news is, you don't actually have to believe in it for it to work.
Come on.
There's someone I want you to meet.
Come on.
Auntie? This is the boy I was telling you about.
Tyrone, this is my auntie.
These damn little pirate birds are stealin' my frozen watermelons.
- [Evita laughs.]
- Ma'am? Ah.
Heh-heh-heh.
Gotcha.
Aww.
Gotcha.
Bam.
Gotcha.
Don't touch.
Some of those are as old as the city.
Come here, boy, and lemme look at you.
Mm.
I don't know about this one, Evita.
Why not? He doesn't think he deserves help.
What? This [speaking French.]
: Notre Père, qui es aux cieux, Que ton nom soit sanctifié [continuing in French.]
Que ton règne vienne.
Hm.
The joker.
Both the hopes and the fears position.
Which one is it? Hopes or fears? Some would say they're the same.
What does that mean? You need a bath.
Did I just? It's like a cleansing bath, all right? It's a Voudon tradition.
Cleanse away any evil spirits.
Okay, a bath.
Isn't there something else we could do? AUNTIE: I could hit you over the head, give you a concussion.
Both open up the mind past the conscious, so you can walk in the Land of the Loa.
Clears the spiritual sinuses, so to speak.
I prefer the bath.
Milk, lavender, anise, white yarrow.
What, are we gonna forage into the woods or something? Hm.
There's a place you can go to get all these things.
And where is that? ADINA: It doesn't matter how many leaves you turn over if the other side is oily.
It's about optics, and this commercial is a great opportunity [Tyrone whispers indistinctly.]
Right.
But you need real people, who really work at the company and are sympathetic, like, uh, single moms or veterans or nature lovers or What's the name of that scientist? Come on.
So now what? Now you get naked.
[laughs.]
Uh, totally naked.
Is this it? EVITA: You gotta relax.
Close your eyes.
They're not closed, are they? Okay, now [inhales.]
deep breaths.
Let your thoughts blow through your mind, like fallen leaves on the wind.
[echoes.]
: Ma? [echoes.]
: Dad? [bus rumbles away.]
[ball bouncing.]
Hey, do you have any idea what's going on? Where is everybody? - Tyrone, is that you? - Hey.
Hey.
Hey, do you have any idea what's going on? So what? You think you can ball now? Better than you, and I'm half your size.
[laughs.]
Let's see what you got.
- What are we spellin'? - Loser.
A word to the wise.
You come at the king, you best not miss.
[whistles.]
All right, maybe you got some skills.
DUANE: Yo, Billy.
- What up, man? - Found him.
- Who? - That asshole that stiffed us.
- Come on, man.
Language.
- Sorry.
We found his car and we're gonna take back our radio.
You comin'? Nah, man.
I'm gonna stay with my brother.
This is for you.
What the hell is going on? Tyrone? Tyrone, can you hear me? TANDY: What is this? What are you doing? Give me my freedom No! - Please don't give 'em a reason - [gunshot.]
To spill blood on my sneakers So I just put my hand up - Then they put me in handcuffs -[thumping.]
- [siren wailing.]
- They just scared - [gunshots.]
- 'cause they don't understand us They try to beat us down when we try to stand up Oh no, not again.
I didn't even do nothin' - No! No, don't! - America - It won't work! - The beautiful America, the murderer - [siren wailing.]
- [thumping.]
America, the funeral Oh! America God bless 'Cause they say they for freedom - [siren wailing.]
- [gasping.]
But I don't believe 'em No! You can't keep doing the same thing, the end will always be the same.
Tyrone, listen to me.
You have to try something else.
America, the beautiful America, the murderer America, the beautiful Oh! America God bless America America, the beautiful America, the murderer America, it's beautiful Oh! America God bless America Hey.

Tandy.

: Daddy! No! Daddy! Daddy, let's go! Daddy! Stop! Stop! Tandy, you can't just see what's right in front of your face? Tandy, why aren't you helping me? Tandy! Stop! Please.
Please, stop running.
You have to try something else.
Hello? [child crying.]
Hey.
Don't cry.
It's gonna be okay.
Hey, it's gonna be okay, all right? Just stay right there.

Someone claims they found this on a dead drug addict? Not someone.
Me.
Took it off the stiff myself.
During a Vice raid.
Seems your case was just a mugging gone wrong.
Vic's lawyers corroborated the story.
None of that fits the evidence.
So what? The case is closed.
I'm sorry, did you say the case is closed? Check with your L if you don't believe me.
And, O'Reilly That beer, the one you owe me, make sure it's none of that hipster Brooklyn shit, all right? [scoffs.]
[phone ringing.]

Do you, um you you you know what's goin' on? MISS AINSLEY: Tandy.
Focus.
Let's try again.
First positions.
Wait.

Prepare.
Pirouette.
Fifth and close.
[piano playing.]
Hey! Watch out.
The water! Watch out for the water! [crackling.]
TYRONE: Who is that? What is this? Hey.
Hey! Hey! Stop! You can't, that's What, are you just gonna stand there? Tandy! Tandy! Tandy! Stop! [splash.]
Tandy.
Where do you think you're goin'? [grunting.]
What do you think is on the other side? TANDY [screaming.]
: Daddy! No! Daddy! Daddy, let's go! Daddy! Stop! Stop! Tandy, you can't just see what's right in front of your face? Tandy, why aren't you helping me? Tandy! Stop! Please.
Please, stop running.
You have to try something else.
Hello? [child crying.]
Hey.
Don't cry.
It's gonna be okay.
Hey, it's gonna be okay, all right? Just stay right there.
CHORUS: Irene, good night - Good night, Irene - [thudding.]
Good night, Irene - I'll see you in my dreams - [thudding.]
Last Saturday night I got married Me and my wife settled down - Me and my wife are parted - [bodies thudding.]
I'm gonna take another stroll downtown Amen.
[gasping.]
- Are you okay? You okay? - [panting.]
[knocking on window.]
O'Reilly, right? That's right.
Connors.
Vice.
Got a present for you.
You can buy me a beer later.
What's this? Thought the NYPD only hired the best and brightest.
This is How did you get this? Found on a junkie DOA earlier today.
Detective O'Reilly.
Hi, Detective.
It's Tandy Bowen.
My mom gave me your card.
If you're serious about what you said I'm willing to stay and face this.
You know I should should thank you, for today.
You feel better? You look better.

Did you get your wish? The answers you were looking for? Uh honestly, no.
No, but I think I know how I can.
What exactly did you see? I I don't I don't think I should say.
I don't think it was my journey.
Oh, I made a wish too.
At the tomb.
You did? Couple days ago.
