I'm Zach Anner and getting my own travel show was a dream come true for me.
I have cerebral palsy, the sexiest of the palsies, but that's never stopped me.
So, now I'm exploring the country and I'm taking you along for the ride.
This trip, I'm rollin' into New York, New York.
As I countdown the top five things I've always wanted to do in the Big Apple, I'll be touring Manhattan from 2,000 feet above, stepping back in time to satisfy my sweettooth, and because I'm single, I'm going to try speed dating.
The last and final date.
It's all leading up to a life-long dream of doing stand-up at world famous Carolines Comedy Club.
And, I'm terrified.

Rollin' with Zach Season 1 -- Episode 03 "New York" So, I had a great night's sleep here at the Andaz.
And, now I'm ready to go experience New York City.
The experience that I have with New York is when I was 8 years old, I tried to run away to New York City to meet Cindy Crawford.
That's all I know.
So, to get the lay of the land 5 on my Big Apple countdown is a helicopter tour where you can see all of Manhattan in just 20 minutes.
I've never been in a helicopter before.
Are you scared? I'm a little nervous.
and see Manhattan from high above.
Are you guys all set? Can you call me "Iceman" and I'll call you "Maverick"? Okay, "Ice", you got it.
Whoa! We have lift-off! When I saw all the advantages of seeing New York City from a helicopter Pilot: You can obviously see all of the city from this vantage point too graphically gives you an understanding of how the city is made.
It's truly an island.

Zach: It's nice to see something from that perspective before you go down into it because it doesn't seem so intimidating.
There's Central Park.
Pilot: 60, city blocks long, six-zero city blocks, that's three miles.
The tall building in the center of midtown, there, that's the Empire State Building.
Zach: Oh, wow.
The architecture in New York is like nowhere else on earth.
It's just gorgeous.
Pilot: Looks like a giant Lego set.
Zach: That's Lady Liberty.
Most recognizeable symbol of the American dream.
Imagine how tired she must get holding that torch up all the time.
This is a really, really breathtaking experience.
I absolutely recommend this and Manhattan Helicopter to anybody who comes to New York.
"Maverick", you did a great job.
Pilot: Oh, we haven't landed yet.
Zach: Oh.
That was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
I can't wait to see the rest of New York.
4 on my New York countdown is a class at Carolines School of Comedy.
The class is part of Carolines Comedy Club a thing that's been here that's launched such performers as Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen and Billy Crystal.
Later on this trip I'm getting the chance to fulfill a lifelong dream of doing stand-up at Carolines as part of their 'New Tallent Night'.
My teacher is Linda Smith.
I hope taking a class will help me get ready for the big night, because, I'm really scared.
It seems like a lot of funny people come out of New York City.
Linda: That's true.
Zach: Is there a reason? It might be the theater influence that's here.
It also might be the fact that it's a city, like none other.
It makes people slightly miserable, but it also makes them think funny.
(chuckling) When you get on stage, you should, you know, you got to be brutally honest about who you are, what you look like.
So, now, you know Zach, you could go on stage and of course you, I mean, look, let's face it.
You're going to have to address the fact that you're in a wheelchair.
What?? Yeah, I know, shocking! Oh, my God.
Oh, no I just noticed.
We're all going to do 2 minutes at the microphone, tonight.
Okay? Oh, you want me to perform 2 minutes of material I've never said out loud before.
Okay.
Sure.
Yep.
Hello, I'm 16 and I'm pregnant and my boyfriend's just not that excited.
And, I am like, yeah he's 16, I mean, maybe he would be excited if you were to give birth to an xbox.
Some of them are really funny and that's intimidating.
Give it up for Zach.
When I was born, 26 years ago, they didn't have the sonagram technology that they have now, and you can imagine my mother's surprise when I was born, 2 months premature, and the anguish she went through giving birth to a tiny baby and an equally tiny motorized wheelchair.
She'll never forgive me.
The tiny wheelchair at birth, really great.
But, your setup was too long.
I mean, in the perfect world there would be no set ups, just punch lines.
But, we can't have that.
How can we? See what I'm saying? - Yeah.
Okay, it was really a good night, you guys.

Comedy should be the things that are otherwise impossible to express.
You have to bring them out and say, look, it's funny if you look at it this way, which is what I have been trying to do my whole life.

Every neighborhood in New York offers something unique.
But, for interesting food I've heard Brooklynn is the place to checkput.
So, I'm going to the Brooklynn "Farmacy" on a quest for great sweet treats.
That's right, as you might have noticed I'm a sugar freak.

Wow! Were soda fountains like this popular in Brooklynn, in the old days? Soda fountains have been popular in America since the early 1900's.
They started out in pharmacies mostly because, when they first had the machines, the only people they were licensed to was the pharmacist.
Pharmacists created the first soda fountain drinks as a way to cure headaches and other ailments.
They would mix the fizz and flavoring with the drugs as a way to help the medicine go down.
What is it that you do as a soda jerk? What it refers to is the motion of pulling seltzer.
See, you're jerking seltzer.
Could I do it? - Yeah.
I promise I won't break your soda fountain.
(laughs) So, what we're going to make is we're going to make a root beer float.
Amazing.
The first thing we're going to start with right, is root beer.
Seltzer, let it ride.

And, so, what you're gonna want to do is when I give you the scoop you're gonna hang it on the side.

I was expecting delicious desserts, but I wasn't expecting the heart they put into this place.

Doing stand-up in front of a live audience is my biggest dream and my biggest fear.
Now, it's time to face it as I head to #1 on my countdown Carolines Comedy Club in Manhattan.
Located on Broadway, in Times Square, Carolines features some of the country's most popular comedians.
I'm performing as part of their 'New Talent Night'.
No pressure.
It's real cool to be in a room where so many famous comedians have stayed back here and have felt the same butterflies that I'm feeling now.
U-uh, I'm nervous.
We definitely have all the best people in New York that are working their way up through the system, right now.
Hopefully, will be next year's stars.
Uh, we're going to start it out with this first man You should not be able to name your kid Marco and then lose him.
When I get real excited, my, um, my muscles go into spasm, so, they just shake.
Hey, Zach - Hey.
You're up, it's time.
What?! Oh, yeah.
This is it, buddy.
Yeah, you'll be fine.

Oh, why did I do this on TV.
Coming up It's finally time for one of the biggest moments of my life.
But, this might be a tougher crowd than I thought.
Uh, uh New York has been amazing and now it's finally time to take the stage in Carolines Comedy Club.
My date, Ella, is in the audience so I really hope I don't choke.
This next man I'm about to bring to the stage is making his debut as a stand-up comic, so why don't you guys give him a little bit of extra love.
Please welcome to the stage, Zach Anner.
(applause) You know, a lot of people come up to me and they say Zach, I feel really bad for you coz you're in a wheelchair.
They shouldn't.
I don't think that people understand how comfortable sitting is.
(laughs) Have you tried it? I mean, it's much easier than standing.
You guys know what I'm talking about, right.
The other day I got to ride in a helicopter over New York City.
The pilot didn't really, uh, do too much to quell my fears, either.
He said, everybody needs a life preserver, except you! What? I'm a cripple, not a merman! (laughs) Educate yourself.
I went speed dating yesterday, You know what it is? I'll just do it here.
Uh, what's your name? Jen.
- Jen.
Okay, Jen, where are you from? Long Island.
Long Island, oh, we just dated.
And, that's just the first two minutes (snapping sound from wheelchair) Uh, oh.
Yep, my wheelchair just broke.
Uh, that's new.
I really don't have any new, more material, but apparently I'm going to be here a while.
(laughing continues) Thanks a lot.
You guys have been great.

I think that went pretty well.
I mean, I broke my chair, but other than that I think we're doing pretty good.
People knew I was nervous, but I still kind of won 'em over, you know.
So, it just felt good.
It felt like people were accepting me for me.

I couldn't find a store with flowers, so I went to the Lego store.
Awesome! I'm just a lucky dude.
I'm a lucky dude to be able to go up on that stage and perform where so many seasoned performers have performed.
And, get even some laughs and I did pretty well.
I wanted to do it because it's New York.
Wow! I love New York.
It's really been an incredible experience.
It's weird that a place has such a palpable energy and spirit to it.
I get it, you know.
I came to New York a scared little boy and I left New York a man.
I'm not sure what that means, but I think it makes sense in this sceneario.
