Second Hand Style-Up (2023) s01e03 Episode Script
Episode 3
1
Follow me, ladies.
I'm speechless.
I don't really know what to say.
Are you nervous? Yeah, I'm nervous.
Surprise! Hello. Hi.
Oh, it's all my clothes.
With all of us
watching what we spend,
it's hard to prioritise
a new wardrobe or outfit.
But less dough doesn't
mean less drip.
This is Second Hand Style-Up.
We put a shout out to find people
struggling with their style
and fashion budget.
One person who got in touch
was Alex from Manchester.
Alex admits that she's had to watch
her spending
over the past few months
and is stuck in a style rut.
Hey, Alex!
I'm Jorgie. You actually think
you're here for a casting here today?
Yeah. Yeah, but you're not. No.
You've actually made it
onto the show, Second Hand Style-Up.
Oh, my God! Yeah. That's amazing!
Your mum, Anne, she's in on it
as well.
OK, so she lied?
Yeah, she's a liar.
So you're going to get
all your stuff and we're going to go
to the style studio now. OK!
Yeah. All right.
Amazing.
I'm speechless.
I don't really know what to say.
You in? I'm in.
OK, let's go!
Alex, so tell us a bit
about yourself.
I've got a 19-year-old.
She's my foster daughter,
but she's also my niece,
and so she lives with me.
Alex, on a personal level,
how have you been feeling?
Um, I'm afraid I've not felt my best
the last couple of years.
I think a lot of people are
probably the same.
With, like, Covid,
I'm not in the office as much.
I found out that I was in early
menopause last year, so I'm 41.
And I get hot flushes in the
menopause,
so you can't wear
anything too heavy
or, like, I wouldn't wear
a coat today
because it wasI'd be too hot.
How does this affect your confidence
when it comes to fashion?
I don't think I
know what to do any more.
So I always wear leggings and a
baggy T-shirt, like I'm doing today,
and then I've got, like,
probably two baggy dresses
that I wear for work.
Before I, like, I loved fashion
and I loved going shopping
with my mum.
So we would go
shopping all the time.
But I also had, like,
more money then,
so it was a bit easier to buy stuff.
What kind of clothes would
you love to start wearing?
Something where you can see
a bit more of my body, maybe,
so, like, dresses,
little ankle boots,
stuff that's, like, really well made
and doesn't show
every lump and bump.
Do you have any idea what's
going to happen today?
Not a clue.
Are you nervous?
Yeah, I'm nervous, yeah.
Nervous. Excited nervous?
Excited nervous, yeah.
That's a good nerve. Yeah, yeah.
OK, good, good.
I'm hoping that she gets
some nice new clothes
because she is just
so amazing herself
and she just helps
so many other people.
It would be nice for it
to be her turn, really.
Surprise! Hello.
Hi. You must be Anne, Alex's mum.
Yes.
I am. She called you a liar before,
no offence. I did.
You did very well at lying.
Well done.
This is Emma, our stylist.
Hi. Hello, hello. Nice to meet you.
Was it a surprise today?
A little bit, yeah.
We've got a bit of bigger surprise
for you today.
Can you see this very blue
wardrobe here?
Yeah, I like the colour.
Me too.
Do you want to see what's inside?
Yes, please.
Oh!
It's all my clothes.
All the clothes in here
I'm actually going to
be selling for you.
OK? And with that money,
I'm going to be buying you a whole
new
pre-loved wardrobe Amazing.
..of new clothing.
So what's this, then?
This little number?
So I like a cardigan dress.
It's quite comfy, isn't it?
And then you don't have to decide
what goes with it.
It's just its own thing
and it's a statement piece.
But it is really heavy and really
thick,
so it's a bit too hot for me.
Now this is gorgeous.
I love this dress,
but it does crease a bit.
But it is beautiful.
It is a really beautiful dress.
Wow. I love this one.
But, oh, this skirt!
This looks like an art piece.
How would you style this one?
I'd probably be casual in that one.
And maybe just, like,
tuck a black T-shirt in. Yeah?
Yeah. Nice, OK.
I see them little Cinderella
heels there.
Are you a heel girl?
I do like a heel.
Did you wear them much?
I mean, they look prettydo they
fit? They're the wrong size for me.
Oh, I'm like that. If it doesn't
fit, I'm just gonna put my toes in.
If they don't have my size,
then I'll just buy
Just stuff them in.
..the nearest, yeah.
And just deal with it. Yeah.
Clip, clop. Clip, clop.
Emma is selling the clothes
on Vinted.
In real life, it's impossible
to predict how quickly items sell.
So for the purpose of content,
we've sped up the process
and used the estimated value
to buy Alex's new pre-loved wardrobe.
Follow me, ladies. Oh.
So, Alex, with the value
of your own wardrobe,
I actually exchanged it.
And with the money I bought yourself
a whole new pre-loved wardrobe.
What do you think?
Amazing!
You can tell, it's a flowy Yes.
..loose, maybe, like, a bit of a
Stevie Nicks kind of vibe.
So would this be something
that she would pick?
Yeah, you'd definitely look at
the coat and the pink top
to start with anyway, and probably
just keep going. We both love red.
Do you actually exchange clothes?
Mum will get quite a lot of
my clothes.
The blazer that she's wearing is
inherited from me. Yeah, this is
hers.
Oh, we love a bit of that!
So really, you'll be
getting this after,
so you better like it
as well, really!
I didn't realise there was such
a variety, I suppose.
It all seems
to be very good quality.
I would be very happy to buy
pre-loved clothes myself.
Save me lot of money.
Take it off the rail. Yeah.
What do you think?
It's not something I would
have tried before.
It is really cute, isn't it?
Anne, what do you think?
Yeah, no, definitely. I think
you should definitely try it.
I feel like you're very wise as well,
Anne, with the fashion.
Do you want to come
stand here with me?
It was very hard not to keep
this for myself, actually.
I love the buttons on it.
It's very high fashion, in a way.
And I can just already tell,
it's going to look gorgeous on you.
I love this two-set.
The good thing with
a co-ord, as such,
is that you can always wear one
or the other, or together. Yeah.
And this, cos it's a nice,
flowy skirt
it's comfortable, it's breathable.
What about the shoes? What are we?
The shoes, of course!
These are obviously just,
slip them in, very easy
and they're heels.
It's a good heel.
Is that a good heel?
We like to say it's a good heel,
don't we? Good heel.
I also heard you like a bit
of handbag.
Love a handbag.
I've selected these rather
Very cute. ..cool, vintage
'60s again, isn't it? '60s!
A trunk. Yes.
A bit of, like, a novelty
item in a way.
It's lovely, isn't it?
Yeah. Did you have something
like this?
Yeah, definitely.
I thought you would have.
Did you keep any of them?
Yeah, did you not keep it?
No, she didn't keep anything!
No? Nothing.
Oh!
I am obsessed with pre-loved.
I mean, look at the selection.
We've got so many cool pieces
from another loving home,
and now are going to be
into your loving home.
So should we put these on, then?
Yes! Yeah?
Yes! Yeah? Yes!
Anne, are you ready?
Yeah, we're ready!
Let's go!
Alex, I think it's time to see you
in your favourite outfit.
OK, let's do it. Let's do it. Yeah.
CHEERING
Oh, what do you think?
You look amazing.
Thank you.
You look so girlie and feminine.
Do you love it? Yeah, I do.
How do you feel? I feel
I feel really good.
Like, I wouldn't have worn
this colour,
but it's a really nice colour,
actually.
It looks really lovely on you.
It goes with the brown.
It really brings out your eyes.
I know that was a flirty
chat up line,
but it really brings out your eyes.
Thanks!
I think she looks absolutely
beautiful.
Anne, what's it like seeing your
daughter in this new outfit, then?
It's lovely. It's really nice
to see her looking so pretty.
Thank you.
I wanted her to have something
really special.
And I think today was that.
That's the most
important thing for me, really,
that she had a lovely day
and I was here to see it.
Don't you feel like you want to
do a 360 spin? Yeah.
Woo!
When I saw the rail of
clothes that Emma had chosen,
I was a bit surprised
because it was things I'd maybe
not considered before,
but I think that's why I wanted
to do this,
cos I wanted to try things
I haven't tried before.
Do you think this has, like,
made you think more that, like,
on a budget as well, you can actually
buy some quality, lovely outfits?
Yeah, definitely.
I think all of the outfits
that were selected
were really good quality.
So I was really impressed.
I can't believe you did this to me!
Really?
Normally not great at secrets.
No, I'm not.
I know, I know, but I managed
to keep this one.
You did a good job. I did.
I'm kind of proud of you.
Glad to hear it!
One final thing before you ladies go.
We have got another surprise for you.
We actually have a voucher
for both of you to use
at your favourite restaurant.
Thank you so much.
That's lovely, thank you.
And a round of applause for Alex.
Woo! Yay!
And a hip, hip for Anne.
Hip, hip, hooray!
We're going to go for drinks and
dinner and have some
mother-daughter time because
we don't get to do it that often,
do we? It's a little treat.
Be a big treat. Yeah.
I'm looking forward to it.
Me too. Lovely.
I'm a fan. We're all a fan.
I mean, I'm a big fan of you.
Didn't want to admit it,
but I'm a fan. Oh.
It's got weird.
I'm blushing.
You did amazing.
Like, so well. I'm looking forward
to the next Second Hand Style-Up.
Oh, yeah, me too.
Follow me, ladies.
