1 [horse whinnies.]

[Jim.]
It was late fall, and I was coming down from trapping in the mountains when I spotted it: the hideout of the legendary miner Respero.
Now, Old Respero found treasure beyond his wildest dreams.
But he was too greedy to spend it.
So he hid it and made a map.
After he died, legend said Respero's ghost would haunt anyone who dared to steal his map.
But I wasn't afraid.
[growling.]
I should have been.
[grunts.]
-Hyah! -[horse whinnies.]
I didn't know if my horse could make the jump, but if we didn't, we'd be dead.
[grunts.]
[Abigail.]
Oh, my gosh.
Did you make it? [chuckles.]
Skin of my teeth.
-[groaning.]
-Lucky.
We're going on a camping trip, not a cruise.
I wanted to make sure I had everything I needed.
I've never been camping before.
Well, we're about to change that.
Let's hit the trail.
-Whoo-hoo! -Yay! Wow, I didn't know your dad was a fur trapper or that he mapped the Rivas River.
Or saved 20 people from a mine collapse.
I knew he'd been out west before and had some adventures before I was born.
I'll say.
Your dad's a genuine explorer.
[horse neighs.]
Dad, how come you never told me any of these stories before? I didn't want to tell you.
I wanted to show you.
[Lucky.]
Whoa.
I hope we see some skeletons or make daring escapes, just like you did.
[chuckles.]
Oh, I think sleeping out under the stars for the first time is adventure enough.
Not for me.
-[Jim grunts.]
-[horses whinnying.]
[Lucky gasps.]
Pru, help me tie the horses.
Sure thing, Mr.
Prescott.
Uh, why are they doing that? To keep the horses on the path and out of the ravine.
[horse whinnies.]
Be careful, Spirit! [gasps.]
We have to unhitch them.
[Jim.]
Over here, Pru.
Uh, what can I do? Just stay back.
[grunts.]
[Pru.]
Hold on.
Hold on! [Jim.]
Get it, Abigail! Steady, Sorrel.
[grunts.]
[Lucky.]
Dad! Boomerang! [groaning.]
-[grunts.]
-[horses whinnying.]
On the count of three, let go.
One, two, three! Huh! -Ha! -[grunts.]
-[crashing.]
-[girls gasp.]
Ugh.
Dad, are you all right? I'm fine.
Is everyone okay? I'm sorry, boy.
Shouldn't have tried to put a rope on you.
[sighs.]
Is camping always like this? No, it's mostly toasting marshmallows and singing campfire songs.
Things hardly ever fall off cliffs.
Well, sun's getting low, so we better get to camp.
We're still going? But how can we camp without any equipment? Well, tomorrow, I'll ride down into the ravine and retrieve the gear.
But tonight, we'll rough it.
It'll be fun.
And Abigail and I always keep some food and supplies in our saddle packs.
You do? I don't even have a saddle.
Don't worry, Lucky.
I brought enough marshmallows for everyone.
[chuffs.]
Think we could start a campfire with this? [whinnies.]
Even you know more about camping than me.
And you're a horse.
[whinnies.]
[sighs.]
Oh, it's fine, boy.
I'm just feeling a little left out.
Don't they know I can be as daring and adventurous as anybody? [Jim.]
Lucky, stay close.
Guess not.
[whinnies.]
Wood for the fire.
How can we make a fire, Mr.
Prescott? The matches were in the cart.
Because we've got flint.
What's flint? It's a material found in all kinds of rocks: quartz, limestone, chalk.
And if you crack them together, you've got yourself the makings of a fire.
Wow.
All right, let's get this fire going.
-Whoo! -Whoo-hoo! [laughing.]
[blowing.]
Whoops.
[blows.]
[sniffing.]
[chuffs.]
[whinnies.]
[grunts.]
[blows.]
[animal growls.]
What was that? Sounded like a bobcat or a bear.
Or Respero's ghost.
Pru, stop.
You know, Pru just might be right.
The land we're sitting on belonged to Old Respero.
His treasure must be hidden somewhere close by.
Didn't you ever find it? No, the map was too cryptic.
Lucky's mom and I tried dozens of times, but we could never get past the first clue.
You went treasure hunting with Mom? Oh, I sure did.
And I bet it would make Respero's ghost pretty mad if we went hunting for it again now.
Oh, I'd love to get my hands on that treasure.
I bet it's gold.
Or kittens.
But probably gold.
Too bad we don't have the map.
-Who says we don't? -[gasps.]
Oh, wow.
That's no treasure map.
It's just pictures and a poem.
I can't even read it.
It's written in an old miner's code.
That's right.
How do you know miner's code? Oh, my dad taught me, so if we ever round up any horses who are branded with it, we can find their owners.
So what's it say? Let's see.
"The treasure's start is here to see.
But from my ghost, ye'll ne'er be free.
" What does that mean? All I heard was "ghost.
" [gasps.]
It's a puzzle.
I'll say.
Puzzled your mom and me for years.
I'm not sure it can be solved.
Well, I'm gonna try.
You found the map, but maybe I'll be the one who finds the treasure.
And I'll be the one who spends it.
New saddle! [snoring.]
Can you tell what this means? [whinnies.]
-[laughs.]
-[Jim.]
Lucky! Come here.
Check this out.
[whispering.]
Wow.
That's a lot of stars.
Do you recognize that constellation? It's a rectangle? Try looking at it in a different way.
See? It's Equuleus.
That's Mom's horse.
She named him after a constellation? Yep.
Equuleus wasn't the biggest or strongest horse around.
-But he was clever.
-[horse chuffs.]
And whenever trouble came to find him, he would hide.
Didn't that make him a coward? No, it made him smart.
He knew that sometimes he was too little to outrun or fight danger, so he would do whatever he needed to stay safe.
[bear growls.]
[roars.]
Your mom always liked that story.
She said it reminded her to pick her battles wisely.
-[neighs.]
-Whoa! Easy, boy.
This is for Sorrel, not you.
I don't think that horse of yours likes me very much.
[chuffs.]
He just doesn't like rope.
[snorts.]
Or you.
Sorry.
Okay, girls, I'm off to get the supplies from the ravine.
-Do you need help? -No, it'll take a few hours.
And I don't want you to lose a day of fun out here.
Good, 'cause we've got loads to do.
We're gonna go exploring and pick wildflowers and catch butterflies and see if we can see shapes in the clouds and-- Sounds great.
But don't go too far, okay? And, Lucky, stick with Pru and Abigail while I'm gone.
[clicks tongue.]
[Lucky groans.]
Okay, the first thing I want to explore is where Respero hid his fortune.
"The treasure's start is here to see, but from my ghost, ye'll ne'er be free.
" It's a terrible thought.
It's a terrible clue.
I don't see any start.
Since no one's figured this out before, if we're going to, we have to look at it in a different way.
Like through a telescope so we're far, far away from the ghost? [gasps.]
Wait a minute.
It's like a constellation.
You connect the stars, and you see a dog? Or a wolf? [gasps.]
That's Wolf Ridge.
I buried my pet hamster there so he'd have a nice view.
It's just over the next pass.
"The treasure's start.
" I can't believe it.
We solved the puzzle! What are we waiting for? Let's go get that gold.
Last one to Wolf's Ridge is a miner's smelly boot.
[laughing.]
[Lucky.]
Hyah! [horses neighing.]
That treasure's got to be around here somewhere.
Let's spread out and look for it.
Let's not spread out too far.
[gasps.]
[gasps.]
Over here! Pru, what's it say? "Heed its hiss; beware its rattle.
Every step will be a battle.
" [gasps.]
It's the ghost rattling its chains.
A ghost doesn't hiss, though.
The only thing I know that hisses and rattles is a snake.
[neighing.]
But I don't see any snakes around here.
[gasps.]
There's a snake on the map! Oh, my gosh.
Snake's Hill! -Where's that? -I made it up.
But if it did exist, it would be perfect right now.
Actually, you might be onto something.
[both.]
Really? Yeah, the last clue looked like a wolf.
So what here looks like a snake? [gasps.]
There! That arroyo's the exact same shape as the snake on the map.
I'm gonna buy a real turquoise bridle and brand-new riding boots and a talking parrot and Why are you just standing there, Abigail? That arroyo is really far away.
It'll take all day to get there.
Won't your dad be worried if he gets back to camp and we're not there? Nah, we told him we were going exploring.
-Right, Spirit? -[neighs.]
Besides, he'll forget all about it when he sees the treasure.
It's okay, Abigail.
He knows we can handle ourselves in the wild.
Well, I do have a couple questions for your talking parrot.
So okay.
Let's go.
Hyah! [frog ribbits.]
[neighs.]
What are you waiting for, Chica Linda? Let's go.
-[horse chuffs.]
-[gasps.]
Look! Letters in miner's code.
R, M, E, S, K, G [sighs.]
They don't spell anything.
Welp, the first step to being a fearless explorer is being fearless.
-So -[neighs.]
[rattling.]
-[gasps.]
-[neighs.]
[Abigail.]
Lucky! What was that, a rockslide? That rock didn't slide.
It was thrown.
[chuffs.]
"Every step will be a battle.
" [gasps.]
This path is booby-trapped! There's got to be a way through.
Those letters must mean something, but there's nothing else written on the map except Respero's name.
[gasps.]
That's it.
-We start with "R" -[Lucky.]
What are you doing? -[Pru.]
then "E.
" -[Abigail.]
Careful, Pru! Now "S.
" We have to follow the letters to spell his name.
[whinnying.]
[grunting.]
This is like hopscotch [rumbling.]
-[gasps.]
-[rock shatters.]
Ooh.
if hopscotch was super dangerous.
[Pru.]
"P, E" "R, O"! [Lucky.]
We did it! [Abigail.]
All right! [rumbling.]
[gasping.]
[screaming.]
[horses neighing.]
[girls panting.]
Bet your dad's never done that.
[Jim whistling.]
Hey, I'm back! Get that fire started, 'cause I could eat a horse.
-[horses chuff.]
-Girls? Girls? Wow.
Whoa.
It's beautiful.
Are you kidding me? Camp is less than a mile away.
We just rode in a big circle.
We're practically back where we started.
At least we won't have to carry the treasure that far.
Gold is heavy.
If we can find it.
Which way now? [gasps.]
Gah! -Are you okay? -Yes, but the map's not.
The ink's running.
[Pru.]
No, it's not.
That's invisible ink.
[Abigail.]
Ugh, it's the snake's tongue.
[Lucky.]
It points to the left, so There's a path.
The treasure must be behind the waterfall.
Come on.
-[grunting.]
-[horses neighing.]
Wait here, Spirit.
We're just going to see what's back there.
[snorting, neighing.]
What's wrong with Spirit? Ah, he's just mad he can't come with us.
It's okay, fella.
We'll be right back.
[neighing.]
-There it is! -[gasps.]
[Abigail.]
The treasure! [grunting.]
It's locked.
[Lucky gasps.]
There are skulls on the map, too.
They've got to be related.
Yeah, but how? I don't like any of this.
All these skulls are scary.
This one looks angry.
This one looks angrier.
And this one looks well, this one just looks hungry.
Hang on.
That's the clue.
The skull's teeth are the combination.
If it has top teeth, the lever goes up.
Bottom teeth, it goes down.
Nice work, Abigail.
I can't take all the credit.
The skulls really helped.
[inhales deeply.]
This is it.
Gold, gold, gold.
-[gasps.]
-Whoa.
[Abigail.]
Quartz crystals.
Well, they won't buy me a new saddle, but they sure are beautiful.
Oh, I can't wait to show my dad.
[low growl.]
It's the ghost! That's not a ghost.
It's a bear! [screaming.]
-[bear roars.]
-[girls scream.]
[neighing.]
[panting.]
What should we do? Nobody panic.
Bears don't like people.
He won't want to come anywhere near us unless this is his cave.
[bear roars.]
Which it is.
I miss the ghost.
[grunts.]
[gasps.]
The quartz has flint in it! Do it again.
[scraping.]
[bear growls.]
Yes! -[bear roars.]
-No! Run! [bear snarls, growls.]
[gasps.]
[grunting.]
It won't budge.
-[grunts, gasps.]
-[horse whinnies.]
[rapid hoofbeats.]
[neighing.]
Spirit! I can see Spirit.
-Spirit! -[neighing.]
Spirit [neighing.]
[neighs, snorts.]
[whinnies softly.]
[Pru.]
All right.
We have to fight him.
Fight a bear? He'll eat us alive! We have to do something.
I still have marshmallows.
Maybe we can befriend him.
Oh, yeah, that'll work.
I'm sure he'd much rather eat a marshmallow than a bunch of tasty girls.
[bear bellowing.]
[gasps.]
We have to hide.
[grunts.]
[bear snarling.]
[gasping.]
Lucky! Girls! Hello! [Spirit neighing.]
Spirit? [neighing excitedly.]
Lucky! Hyah! Hyah! Come on! Hyah! Hyah! Come on, Sorrel, faster! Hyah! [horse neighing.]
Girls! [Abigail.]
Mr.
Prescott! -[Lucky.]
Dad, we're in the cave! -[Pru.]
Hurry! Help! Is anyone hurt? [bear roars.]
[Lucky.]
Not yet.
[low growling.]
-[bear roars.]
-[screaming.]
[whinnying.]
[Jim.]
Hold on, girls! I'll get you out of there.
[neighing.]
[grunting.]
[Lucky.]
Dad, help! [Jim grunting.]
[horse snorting.]
Together.
[grunting.]
[creaking.]
[screaming.]
Again! -[bear growls.]
-Abigail, go! [grunts.]
Pru! [grunting.]
[low growl.]
Lucky.
Girls.
Thank goodness you're all safe.
But what were you thinking? We were just following the map.
We didn't know it'd lead us to a bear.
Oh, if I had known that, I would've burned that thing years ago.
Oh, I'm just glad you're okay.
[horse chuffs.]
We both are.
[Abigail.]
And then we saw the treasure chest.
And then the crystals were all, "Sparkle.
" And the bear was all, "Roar.
" And we were all, "Ahh!" But then Lucky made us hide, which saved us until you got there.
The end.
I guess you truly are fearless explorers all of you.
Yes, I was very brave, especially with all the skulls and all.
-[animal roaring.]
-[whimpers.]
Respero's ghost! [whinnies.]
Chica Linda? Oh, you poor horse.
How did this happen to you? It's okay.
I've gotten marshmallows stuck everywhere.
-[whinnies.]
-Come on.
-We'll figure something out.
-[giggles.]
Oh, I still can't believe you actually found the treasure.
I always hoped you would take to this life.
And you have.
-[Lucky sighs.]
-Hmm.
I guess it runs in the family.
[horse chuffs.]
[music playing.]

This is like hopscotch [rumbling.]
-[gasps.]
-[rock shatters.]
Ooh.
if hopscotch was super dangerous.
[Pru.]
"P, E" "R, O"! [Lucky.]
We did it! [Abigail.]
All right! [rumbling.]
[gasping.]
[screaming.]
[horses neighing.]
[girls panting.]
Bet your dad's never done that.
[Jim whistling.]
Hey, I'm back! Get that fire started, 'cause I could eat a horse.
-[horses chuff.]
-Girls? Girls? Wow.
Whoa.
It's beautiful.
Are you kidding me? Camp is less than a mile away.
We just rode in a big circle.
We're practically back where we started.
At least we won't have to carry the treasure that far.
Gold is heavy.
If we can find it.
Which way now? [gasps.]
Gah! -Are you okay? -Yes, but the map's not.
The ink's running.
[Pru.]
No, it's not.
That's invisible ink.
[Abigail.]
Ugh, it's the snake's tongue.
[Lucky.]
It points to the left, so There's a path.
The treasure must be behind the waterfall.
Come on.
-[grunting.]
-[horses neighing.]
Wait here, Spirit.
We're just going to see what's back there.
[snorting, neighing.]
What's wrong with Spirit? Ah, he's just mad he can't come with us.
It's okay, fella.
We'll be right back.
[neighing.]
-There it is! -[gasps.]
[Abigail.]
The treasure! [grunting.]
It's locked.
[Lucky gasps.]
There are skulls on the map, too.
They've got to be related.
Yeah, but how? I don't like any of this.
All these skulls are scary.
This one looks angry.
This one looks angrier.
And this one looks well, this one just looks hungry.
Hang on.
That's the clue.
The skull's teeth are the combination.
If it has top teeth, the lever goes up.
Bottom teeth, it goes down.
Nice work, Abigail.
I can't take all the credit.
The skulls really helped.
[inhales deeply.]
This is it.
Gold, gold, gold.
-[gasps.]
-Whoa.
[Abigail.]
Quartz crystals.
Well, they won't buy me a new saddle, but they sure are beautiful.
Oh, I can't wait to show my dad.
[low growl.]
It's the ghost! That's not a ghost.
It's a bear! [screaming.]
-[bear roars.]
-[girls scream.]
[neighing.]
[panting.]
What should we do? Nobody panic.
Bears don't like people.
He won't want to come anywhere near us unless this is his cave.
[bear roars.]
Which it is.
I miss the ghost.
[grunts.]
[gasps.]
The quartz has flint in it! Do it again.
[scraping.]
[bear growls.]
Yes! -[bear roars.]
-No! Run! [bear snarls, growls.]
[gasps.]
[grunting.]
It won't budge.
-[grunts, gasps.]
-[horse whinnies.]
[rapid hoofbeats.]
[neighing.]
Spirit! I can see Spirit.
-Spirit! -[neighing.]
Spirit [neighing.]
[neighs, snorts.]
[whinnies softly.]
[Pru.]
All right.
We have to fight him.
Fight a bear? He'll eat us alive! We have to do something.
I still have marshmallows.
Maybe we can befriend him.
Oh, yeah, that'll work.
I'm sure he'd much rather eat a marshmallow than a bunch of tasty girls.
[bear bellowing.]
[gasps.]
We have to hide.
[grunts.]
[bear snarling.]
[gasping.]
Lucky! Girls! Hello! [Spirit neighing.]
Spirit? [neighing excitedly.]
Lucky! Hyah! Hyah! Come on! Hyah! Hyah! Come on, Sorrel, faster! Hyah! [horse neighing.]
Girls! [Abigail.]
Mr.
Prescott! -[Lucky.]
Dad, we're in the cave! -[Pru.]
Hurry! Help! Is anyone hurt? [bear roars.]
[Lucky.]
Not yet.
[low growling.]
-[bear roars.]
-[screaming.]
[whinnying.]
[Jim.]
Hold on, girls! I'll get you out of there.
[neighing.]
[grunting.]
[Lucky.]
Dad, help! [Jim grunting.]
[horse snorting.]
Together.
[grunting.]
[creaking.]
[screaming.]
Again! -[bear growls.]
-Abigail, go! [grunts.]
Pru! [grunting.]
[low growl.]
Lucky.
Girls.
Thank goodness you're all safe.
But what were you thinking? We were just following the map.
We didn't know it'd lead us to a bear.
Oh, if I had known that, I would've burned that thing years ago.
Oh, I'm just glad you're okay.
[horse chuffs.]
We both are.
[Abigail.]
And then we saw the treasure chest.
And then the crystals were all, "Sparkle.
" And the bear was all, "Roar.
" And we were all, "Ahh!" But then Lucky made us hide, which saved us until you got there.
The end.
I guess you truly are fearless explorers all of you.
Yes, I was very brave, especially with all the skulls and all.
-[animal roaring.]
-[whimpers.]
Respero's ghost! [whinnies.]
Chica Linda? Oh, you poor horse.
How did this happen to you? It's okay.
I've gotten marshmallows stuck everywhere.
-[whinnies.]
-Come on.
-We'll figure something out.
-[giggles.]
Oh, I still can't believe you actually found the treasure.
I always hoped you would take to this life.
And you have.
-[Lucky sighs.]
-Hmm.
I guess it runs in the family.
