Previously on The Republic of Sarah
A sizable deposit of coltan
has been discovered
right here in Greylock.
This morning, Governor Taggert
signed eminent domain paperwork,
which gives Greylock's public space
to the state of New Hampshire.
They're gonna wipe Greylock off the map.
I know how we can stop the drilling.
What if we didn't belong
to New Hampshire?
This town was never legally claimed
by either of its national neighbors.
(CHUCKLES): Who's in
charge if the mayor quits?
TYLER: Ms. Cooper. She saved us.
She should be the leader.
Lydon can dig two mines.
Grover, one of the mines
is going on your land.
Grover built that house himself.
It was his wedding gift to Patience.
This is an international boundary now.
Your border must remain closed.
Here we go ♪

Changing ♪
But now into what? ♪
Tumbling with the seasons ♪

AJ: Well, it's official.
We're completely cut off.
Greylock PD just checked all the roads
that lead out of town.
New Hampshire border
is closed to the south.
Canadian border is closed to the north.
Governor Taggert was not bluffing.
We're completely cut off.
Wait, how can she do that, legally?
Aren't there rules for how countries
have to treat each other?
There are two basic steps to
becoming fully independent.
One: say you're a country.
Two: get other countries to agree.
Greylock is obviously all over step one,
but the U.S. is dragging
its feet on step two,
and since they haven't
officially recognized us yet,
we get no treaties, no diplomacy,
and no protection from Gail.
CORINNE: Okay, so, how
do we get recognized?
I'm gonna call the State
Department and find out.
But it takes time, which is something
we don't have at the moment.
So, for now, I'm gonna to focus
on forcing Governor Taggert
to open our border,
or nobody's getting out of Greylock.
Nobody's coming in, either.
My dad was just on the
phone with our dairy guy,
and he says he won't
deliver to Greylock.
He's worried his drivers
will get trapped here.
But they can't close the
borders from our side.
No, but they can stop
anyone who comes in
from getting back out again.
The governor would let her own
citizens get stranded here?
If it means getting her
hands on our coltan.
She's made it very clear
she's always gonna choose
profit over people.
If Greylock really is cut off
from the rest of the world, then
people who live here can't
get to work out there,
people who live there
can't get to work out here.
I mean, we can't get food.
No medical supplies.
Wait. Josh has diabetes.
I have to be able to get insulin.
I'll fix this.
I'm gonna call every leader in the area.
I'm hoping I can get them on our side
so they can put pressure on the
governor to do the right thing.
Sounds like a lot of calls
to make. I'll-I'll help.

DANNY: Hey, Piper, I hope

just closed Greylock's borders.

and keep Greylock from going under.

So, how's it going with the phone calls?
Not great.
Everyone's falling in line
behind the governor so far.
Why? Don't they need us for
their economies to function?

with coltan money.
Everybody I've talked to said
she's promised them upgrades
once Greylock folds, and
she can take our rock.
New schools, new buses,
infrastructure
What, they're just gonna sit
there and watch us get trampled?
As long as it puts
cash in their pockets.

I'm gonna change the conversation.
Money talks, but morality shouts.
Saving Greylock is
the right thing to do.
I have to make these
local leaders see that.
And I will. I got us into this mess,
I'm going to get us out of it.

I mean, we can't stay
locked in Greylock forever.
Half the people here
work in other towns.
We get all of our food from
them, all of our medicine.
Believe me, I understand
how important the border is.

(INDISTINCT CHATTER)

happening all over.
People are freaking out over
the borders being closed.
Well, I hope you got an

because we ain't gonna
last very long like this.
Mayor Stone, I understand that

Greylock disappear to get it?

and she can't get him
to the doctor right now.

with protest signs.
It won't happen again.

is on its way to Greylock right now
to reinforce our border.

My troops will be looking
over every inch of that land.
If anyone so much as sets
foot across the border,
they'll be charged with illegal
entry into the United States
and sent to federal prison.

morning got me thinking.

every inch of that land."

The governor has us surrounded,
we're completely landlocked,
but we aren't waterlocked.
Look, I have a plan.
The Woonsock flows along
our southern border.
It starts here,
passes under us here,
moves through two miles
of New Hampshire to our east,
and then finally arrives in
- Maine.

So, I called a friend from
college this morning.
She and her family
are gonna put together
a supply drop for the town.
Just the essentials
eggs, milk, bread.
And I'm supposed to
bring them home in this?
Mm-hmm. You're gonna
cross the border tonight,
grab the supplies and come
back. Gail will never know.
- (GROANS) Sarah, why me?
- Because I trust you.
- And I know you know boats.
- Fishing with my dad as a kid
is a little different from
riverboat smuggling in the dark.
Okay, I know. Look. I know it's crazy.
It's completely crazy, I know.
But, AJ if you pull this off,
it will give me a chance
to get the borders open.
And in the meantime,
restocking Greylock's shelves
will rob the governor of her
best weapon against us: fear.

I have good news and bad news.

to a roomful of people
that they won't be getting
the food that I promised them
because the boat that
had our cargo on it sank.

(DOOR CLOSES)
MAYA: The video from our protest
has only been up an hour,
but we already have a ton of likes.

He posted it to his own page
five minutes after I got home.
Your dad's so cool.
My dad's still the guy who
does surprise inspections
in my bedroom like we're
in the freaking Army.
I don't know, at least he supports you.
My dad's losing his mind
about this protest.
It's almost like he has
this list in his head
of all these things I'm supposed to be,
and he freaks out as soon as I
get near anything that isn't on it.

Look, I'm sure, deep down,

she's granting political asylum
to anyone who wants to leave Greylock.
Traffic out of town's
backed up for half a mile.

borders open for good now?

they're gonna shut down again.

A lot of people are
talking about our protest
and how unfair the governor is being.
That's why the governor opened
the border temporarily.
It was your protest.
She must've been getting pressure
from people who saw it.
And that was just a bunch
of teenagers with signs.
Think about what we could
do with a whole town.
Okay, you realize there's an entire
army outside our border, right?

within our border, too.
Just needs a general.

He's smart and he's
funny and he's caring.
And just in case you thought
any of that was because of you,
it's not.
He's all those things in spite of you.

SARAH: I need your help.
For the past few days, I've been
trying to reopen our borders.
Nothing has worked.
Talking with some of my
former students today,
I realized why.
All of my solutions to fix
the problem started with "I"
instead of "we."
That changes right now.
I might not be able to get
the border open, but we can.
"We" is stronger than "I."
"We" is braver than "I."
"We " is invincible.
Governor Taggert wants our coltan.
And she believes that because
we live on the wrong side
of an invisible line,
it's okay to destroy us to get it.
But we are going to show
the world that she's wrong.
This afternoon we'll gather at
the southern tip of Jefferson Road
and, together, step over the
border into New Hampshire.
- (CROWD SHOUTING, CLAMORING)
- This will not be easy
and there may be serious consequences
for what we're about to do.
But if Greylock is going to survive,
we need to remind the
world that lines on a map
are not what define us.
Compassion defines us.

- Kindness, friendship, fidelity.
Love is what defines us.
And so let us come together
in peaceful protest
and appeal to the better
angels of our neighbors.
(OFFICERS SHOUT)

Once people realized the true
cost of the fancy new upgrades
the governor was promising them,
they stopped supporting the idea.
And there's been a crowd of
people outside of her office
all day demanding that
she open the borders.
- God.
- (CHUCKLES)
Is Josh okay?
He's feeling much better.
Yeah, Adam's with him now.
I love that little munchkin.
Listen, about before, um
No, I the reason
that I didn't tell you
about Danny being engaged
it's because I, um, I didn't want
to tell you how I found out.
How'd you find out?
A couple of days ago, I
went, uh, to his hotel room,
and when he answered the door,
Piper was there.
Why would you go to his hotel?
I don't know. It doesn't
matter. It's-it's over.
He's clearly moved on and so have I.
Look, the point is, is that I'm sorry.
Me, too.
GUARD: Cooper. You're free to go.
- Seriously?
- All charges have been dropped.
And the borders have been reopened.
- (LAUGHS)
- Oh, my God.
It worked.
REPORTER: Outraged New Hampshirites
began protesting the way
Greylock was being treated,
with some calling for Governor
Taggert's resignation.
This, combined with her
already sagging poll numbers,
- ultimately leaves her with
- ASSISTANT: Hey, Ms. Cooper!
I'm so sorry, Governor,
but I couldn't stop her.
Nobody can, apparently.
Thank you.
(LAUGHS SOFTLY)
You here to gloat?
I'm here to make you an offer.

No more fighting between
New Hampshire and Greylock.
